For some reason I expected this place to be more of a takeout joint but it is a full service restaurant. The service was a little slow I think they might have forgotten about me. The prices were reasonable. I thought the salsa was pretty tasty. Lots of onion and not too much cilantro. The standard salsa they bring with the chips is lightly spicy. I asked for hotter salsa and they brought me some blistering hot stuff - it was actually too hot to eat on chips alone but perfect for enhancing my rice and beans. I ordered machitos and one taco. I love good tacos and wanted to compare to others I've had in Yakima. The taco was good but cost about $1 more than most taco stands and wasn't necessarily any better; so if you're in the mood for tacos I'd probably head elsewhere. Also the taco was missing the standard radish slices and I really missed them. The machitos were quite good and were served with some of the best rice and beans I've ever had. The rice was perfectly cooked and had some flavor and the beans weren't overly heavy which is often the problem with rice and beans at lesser establishments. Portions were plenty large - I took most of my meal home with me, but remember I ordered an extra taco. Even so you won't leave hungry, I'm sure of that. Overall I would definitely give this place a try. I will be going back for sure.

This is a really tasty Mexican food small-ish restaurant in Yakima with very decent prices. Their salsa is good. My wife and I would usually share Fajitas - either shrimp, pollo, or veggies. Delish!

Very good food. Several vegetarian options. I ordered the Orroz con Vegetables. It came with tortillas and an order of chips and salsa. I got my order to go. It was promptly made and packaged up. The package leaked somewhat but was contained by the plastic bag. It tasted super good and the portion was enough for 2. The noise level in the restaurant was pretty high but not offensive. I would eat here again gladly.

Fish tacos and pork carnitas... I keep going back for those two items! Warm chips and salsa are good, I ask for frijoles and a milder sauce and they didn't charge extra. During lunch they are quick to get you in and out, which I truly appreciate...

We go to the drive through here every now and then and it's fantastic. The food is always so delicious. I recommend for sure the Tres Amigos (three enchiladas) and the Arroz con Pollo here is to DIE FOR!!! One of those is enough to easily feed 2 people, just order an extra side of rice and beans (because they're really good) I'm from Texas where I was surrounded by authentic Mexican food and this is perfect!

Not bad, not bad. I wouldn't be sad to eat there again. Not necessarily the most authentic Mexican restaurant in the world, but they haven't Americanized the menu so much as to remove ALL flavor. Lots of vegetarian options (thanks!) and super delicious salsas. Very kind wait staff which I appreciated deeply.

I spend a lot of time in Southern California, where you can walk into any taqueria and 9 out of 10 times it will be excellent. This joint would not be out of place there. It's a converted Tastee-Freez and has reused the layout, so it's kind of weird inside but you don't go into a taqueria for the atmosphere. You go for the al pastor. If it's good, you come back. In any agricultural town with a high Mexican population, there should be at least one authentic taqueria but you have to know where to look. I came upon this place on a recommendation from a local who said she knew where the real places were. And right she was. How wonderful to find this place in the culinary wasteland that is Yakima. El Porton de Pepe, if I'm ever in Yakima again, I'll be back.

Yakima has many delicious Mexican food choices and this is one of them. The tortillas are good, the enchilada sauce is good, the horchata is good, the service is fast and the people are friendly. What more could you ask for?

Not to echo Chris and Scott...but have eaten there several times over the past few months and have to agree with them (and give a recent review)...El Porton has been a consistently excellent taqueria, friendly, efficient, and just plain good (sorry, great) food! Also, they have a Vegetarian menu and some good healthy choices...for example the Spinach and Black Bean Enchiladas that I had today. Has wine, beer, and bar service. Great for families, harder for groups over 6 (it's just not big enough). Added 4/10/10...the Shrimp Enchiladas were great as well!

I have to say, the negative review by Bri B. makes me wonder if he/she meant to be reviewing a different place. My experience at El Porton was completely opposite ... and 100% positive. We stopped off there on a lark while visiting a relative in Yakima, and of course our expectations weren't very high. Not only did El Porton exceed those expectations, but it was every bit as good and friendly as any Mexican restaurant we've eaten at in the ten years we've lived in LA. The food was terrific (especially the vegetarian fajitas, but also the steak burrito and taco salads), the service couldn't have been better (they asked to refill my iced tea three times in a ten-minute span!), and the prices were great. We were there at a busy time of day, and the service was still timely (not too slow, and not too fast). I'd highly recommend it to anyone, and we'll be stopping there again next time we're in Yakima.

The previous reviewers were spot on about the excellent fajitas. I had the steak and chicken combo and it was delicious and huge. The tortillas taste homemade and the salsa is nice and peppery but not too hot. The service was outstanding. I love it when The server offers a refill before my cup is empty. Perfection all around. We will be back!

The portions here are great and worth your money. I love the seasoning they used on the chicken & steak fajitas. Chips and salsa were fresh

The food was outstanding. I had the beef taco and the shredded beef enchilada. The salsa was very fresh and outstanding flavor. Chips were fresh. My only issue was the portions were too large and it made me feel like I was being wasteful. Outstanding flavor. Very clean inside. Will go back.

We visited on valentines, and although they were busy, the service was attentive and the food was great. Gigantic portions. We had the fajitas asadas and a combo plate with shredded beef tacos and enchiladas. The salsa was so fresh and delicious. The food was very flavorful and hit the spot. We're from Texas, and we haven't been able to find such good food this far north. All together, with two drinks and our entrees it was only 35 dollars! What a great deal.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
