The staff at Backwoods are very accommodating and charming. The food was so good!! I highly recommend the skillets as well. Would give it 6 stars if I could

I stopped in here for lunch, had the mountain man burger. It was just okay. Not as big as I was expecting, especially for the price. However, the veggies were fresh. The fries tasted like the frozen crinkle cut variety. The servers were very friendly. After I ordered I noticed that the rest of the crowd was having breakfast dishes. Looks like that's the safe bet here.

as noted in other reviews, the service was needlessly slow. They need to staff more responsibly in order to meet the rush. This is an avoidable issue. Food was ok, but just that. Nothing I couldn't make at home.

I love good good with FRESH ingredients that are made to order. With special eating requirements, it can be hard to find restaurants that will accommodate what I need (dairy/gluten/soy/sugar free) but they made me breakfast EXACTLY how I needed it - scrambled eggs with no butter and red potatoes& onions with no butter as well as fresh hand made pico. She also gave me half of her personal avocado because they didn't have any at the restaurant. Talk about MAKING MY DAY. I plan to ALWAYS come back here, especially for breakfast. love Good customer service!

The food was very good. The wait was long. I guess everyone wants to eat at the Backwoods.

Biscuits and gravy were amazing. Busy place but no line. Even on a Sunday morning!! I recommend checking this place out!

  • Lani W.

Great biscuits, gravy. Loved the lumberjack skillet. The Mexi-scramble was wonderful. Service excellent. Very helpful in suggestions on what to order.

Holy yes!! Breakfast done right! They took such good care of me. As i can be a needy customer ha. But they are incredible. Dora is an amazing women. Coming from Portland this place was such a great find. Yakima is lucky to have This place. Please stop here if you're driving through or if you wake up and want someone else to worry about the cooking. Great time!

The service here is pretty terrible. I don't like to lay blame because it was clearly understaffed, but if the location is that busy during a Friday morning you'd think they might hire some more people. I had the oatmeal and my friends had eggs and bacon and biscuits. Everything was fine, but the fact that we waited 15 minutes to have our order taken and 20 minutes to get coffee made the experience less plesant. That being said, any morning experience is less pleasant when I haven't had coffee yet :P

  • Kari R.

I needed something hardy to get me going on this rainy morning so I stopped in. I got the biscuits and gravy with hashbrowns and eggs. It was all very tasty and the biscuits fluffy (nothing worse than heavy biscuits). Staff was also very friendly.

The exterior isn't much to look at (it's in a strip mall) but the food is tasty! Everything we ordered was cooked perfectly and the staff was friendly and attentive. A good little spot to grab some breakfast/brunch.

  • piper r.

Dora and the rest of the wonderful staff at Backwoods always makes our weekend brunch a great one. Consistently good and fresh food! I recommend the Farmer Omelette! This is always my top choice when posed the question of where we should get breakfast/brunch.

This is a simple place with good food and a friendly staff. Prices are good as well. If it was for the quality of the food alone, maybe this would be a 3-star review. But the whole package fits together well: the friendliness, authenticity, simplicity. We keep going back there when we visit Yakima coming from Seattle. Nice to have the relaxed atmosphere in contrast with the urban places we're used to.

Ordered the Chorizo and it was burnt. I spoke with the host only to hear "it's made like that". They kept trying to explain to me why it looked burned even though I explained it was the taste that was my issue. My server finally apologized and took the Chorizo off my check. There was also a large amount of wait time and no seating area to wait.

Place is a hidden gem.. Have only had breakfast which I would assume is their specialty.. The French toast with crumbled cereal on it is delicious. Sausage links are the real deal.

Delicious food and great service. It is an extra treat when I you find local businesses like this. We will return when we are in town again.

The sign on the entry table at Backwoods Cafe reads "nothing fancy, just good food." And what good food it is! I ordered the mexi-plate, a delicious vegetarian dish that reminded me of the migas at the beloved Tamale House in Austin, TX. At our waitress's recommendation, I got the red potatoes and refried beans on the side (and a yummy buttermilk biscuit for good measure!) The red potatoes stood out especially: thinly sliced and crisped with a sprinkling of salt. My husband was equally enthusiastic about the potatoes and loved his dish, the Backwoods french toast. This house specialty sounded strange on the menu (traditional French toast covered in corn flakes), but the effect was scrumptious! Everyone who worked there was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and helpful. We were offered lots of coffee and water refills, and our waitress was helpful in pointing out vegetarian items on the menu that weren't explicitly marked vegetarian (many are). We didn't see any vegan items, though, so that would be my only caveat for fellow veggie travelers. We didn't ask, though, so it would be worth calling ahead to see if they could make the oatmeal or another dish vegan. Everything is made to order, so I suspect they would be happy to find a way! All in all, this is a fantastic breakfast spot, and we'll be sure to return the next time we're road-tripping through Washington! It was so good, in fact, that we were happy that the meager selection of stale donuts at our hotel required a breakfast stop.

Stricty about this most recent visit a few days ago. 4 stars Not sure if she knows me by this review or remembers me from way back when I worked across the road but considering the amount of time and the total change of my hair and style. I am shocked she actually recalled the memory of me and was nice to know I was remembered. Family member was in town and he wanted dennys. informed him of this place as a local fav alternative. also told him of my previous complaints on the drive but was forgotten and not considered. Got my fav country friend steak and its just as good as i remember even the leftovers i took home were good. Family member had the fajita skillet breakfast. Shuda warned the poor guy that he wasnt in boston anymore and what we call spicy and spicy italian are two totally different levels of kick :P But he didnt complain too much. Service was wonderful. Only issue was what i think was a new server who didnt have technique yet. so it was annoying telling her every 5 mins our drinks had well over 60% and didnt need a refill yet haha but the effort was there as she learned from the gal whos always in charge. I may go here very rarely now but ill be sure to send my breakfast crowds here when they ask for it in particular. Better than any dennys

4.5 stars. The food: Classic breakfast dishes were amazing! Great breakfast and lunch! Hand made everything! I personally had the crispy chicken salad, it was filling and of good quality. The crispy chicken pieces had the perfect size and perfect crispness! The Service: was excellent! Came here with a party 8, they were happy to do separate checks. Food was brought out at the same time, and timely! Water was constantly refilled. All in all: this place has excellent food and service! I would definitely recommend coming here, this competes with some of my favorite breakfast spots over in Seattle!

  • Devonmarie H.

The wait to be seated was about 10 minutes. It took about 20 minutes to have our order taken. The Monte Cristo was eggy, under cooked, and bland. The hash browns were bland and tasted frozen. My cousin ordered the logger skillet which was equally bland and the gravy was under seasoned. Over all disappointing and not worth the wait considering all the great reviews.

Our new favorite place for breakfast when we're in Yakima! Clean place, no kitchen noise, excellent food and service. Our server (and owner), took the time to make sure we understood how the menu was laid out. Had a hard time deciding what to have because everything looked so good. Servings were generous and cooked just as we requested. Sausage gravy was very rich and creamy, and the bacon was probably the best flavored and tender textured we've had. The personal service was greatly appreciated. Highly recommend this place!

Hidden gem indeed! I'm sure the locals are in-the-know but we were fortunate enough to find it through YELP. Made to order and fresh ingredients made this a delicious breakfast break for us on our road trip. Hubby had eggs benny and I the Farmers omelet. Both had buttery hollandaise toppers and plenty of it. We will be sure to stop here on our way back.

I would give this place 10++ stars if I could. The best dang food (especially the Chorizo!!!) anywhere! Dora knows you by name after the first visit and the service is outstanding. A couple of years ago, my wife and I decided to stop in and eat breakfast there before heading back to Seattle. We were just blown away how good it was. We tipped her (Dora) a few extra $$$ since it was so good. The next trip to Yakima (several MONTHS later) we couldn't wait to stop in and eat there again. When we walked in, Dora came over and asked us if we were the one's who had left her TOO MUCH TIP? (She SAVED that tip for MONTHS until she saw us again). She remembered us and thought we overpaid! We explained that it was well worth the extra $$ to tip for the excellent service and food and to just keep it with our blessing. We couldn't believe she was so grateful and honest that she just couldn't pocket it. Wow. I haven't seen that honest of a person on 30+ years. She has earned our business for life! **Note - There is a sign on each table that says "every meal is home-made when you order so please be patient". Slow down and enjoy your meal with friendly honest hard-working people. It is worth it! God bless you and your family Dora. I feel sorry for those of you that eat a fast-food breakfast. You don't know how good REAL food tastes.

The corn flake encrusted French toast was scrumptious. And the logger omelette and logger scramble were delicious. If we lived here we would be regulars!

We were driving through Yakima today and we were looking for a good place to stop for food. Saw this place had a decent rating so we decided to give it a try, it's a little off the highway but not too far. The menu a typical cafe with a mix of breakfast food and lunches. The food was excellent and the service was great. The two waitress were friendly and on top of things my drink was never empty.

  • Ross F.

If you like great food, wonderful service, both at a fair price, then come to Backwoods Cafe! This is an awesome spot! I felt really annoying ordering, "Chorizo scramble with no cheese but I want to add peppers, also can i get my eggs over medium?" But Dora was super mega nice and didn't mind a bit. The menu says the scrambles come with scrambled eggs but they will cook them anyway you'd like. Also try their fresh salsa, it is DA BOMB! Do your wallet and taste buds a favor and check this place out! You won't regret it.

Went to eat on a monday morning with my sister and my 2 rowdy boys. We were given a choice to sit so i chose to sit near the bathroom like always. We were seated right away. Waitress was very nice and acknowledged my boys. Our food came out promptly. Waitress made sure coffee cups were full and water glasses were full also. Food was superb. My son spilled his water and waitress came right away to clean it up. I really appreciated that. French toast was my fave! Will be back there soon this time I will get a babysitter so I can slowly savor the french toast!

  • Andrew J.

After being seated, there was a long wait for a waitress/waiter. After ordering there was another very long wait for some very okay food. Recommended if you have a lot of spare time, aren't fully hungry yet, and want some decent food.

    (2)
  • Andrew C.

Had the eggs Benedict but was more of a butter sauce than a hollandaise. Wife had the French toast which was also very heavy even for a French toast. Food would be much better without all the fat and butter and oil used. Potatoes were decent and service was excellent. Disappointed with the food.

Fantastic breakfast. Everything fresh and cooked right from the loggers omelette to the fried jalapeño And, the service was top notch. This is THE place for breakfast. They made these out-of-towners feel very welcome.

  • Homar M.

Very nice food and service, the breakfast is amazing. All dishes are some how hispanic inspired, just my impression. Taste very good. The waiting line is sometimes long on weekends, but it is worth the wait. The location is quite odd, lot of improvised decoration.

Have refused to go back after our last expeirence. We used to go here quite often. Food was hit and miss and the wait was always very long, but it was close and local which we like supporting even if a little more pricey. However on our last visit (husband and I) I had a "Seize the Deal" coupon that I had paid for and was there to use. When I presented it to my waitress who was also the owner she went ballistic!! Scolding me for wanting to use it, and saying she wouldnt make any money off of me if she ALLOWED me to use it. This went on for far too long. Honestly so unprofessional to raise her voice and cause a scene, I was actually in disbelief as to the way she was acting. I bit my tounge , folded the coupon back up and couldnt wait to get out of there. I had Purchased a seize the deal coupon and off of our $35 bill (2 lunches and drinks) the discount would have only been $5. The 1 glass of soda I ordered was $3 so how was she loosing money?!? I used to reccomend her place and had quite a few lunch dates/meetings there however I refuse to pay to be degraded and treated in the manor she displayed. Disgusting!

The wait staff seemed a little off their game, but the food was decent, fast & the place is clean.

  • Michael Z.

Okay, restaurants sometimes get really, really, super busy. That happens, it's how they deal with it that counts. There were two of us, in town for a conference. We were told there would be a wait, which was cool, and then we were told that, due to a large party in the back room, there would be an additional 15 minute wait once we were seated. The warning was super classy, and allowed us to make an informed decision. We stayed. Once we were seated, the wait was a littlle shorter than promised. I had a small substitution on my order. The wait staffer asked a couple of clarifying questions, to make sure she got it right. When our food arrived, it was exactly right, prompt, and hot. After that, our coffee and water glasses were never neglected, and we were regularly checked on by at least four different staffers. Overall, this was a real class act. Next time I'm in town, this will be my on my agenda. Nice job!

Interesting concept on French toast. I ordered special French toast and noticed cornflakes over the bread. So I tasted and it was not that bad. Not really terrible. And orange juice was wonderful, really fresh. Would come back to order something different.

I have given this place two chances now, because I really wanted to like it, but I now know that I will never be back. During my first visit they were extremely busy. It took a very long time to get our food, but it was busy and they have a sign on their tables explaining it takes them a long time to prepare food as they prepare everything fresh, yeah right! When my mom got her country fried streak, it was leathery, overlooked, and hard as a rock. It was my mom's birthday so we encouraged her to complain, which is uncharacteristic for her, because we didn't want her to have a gross meal for her b-day. So, when my mom politely complained to the waitress (who we later discovered was the owner) the woman got really mad. I mean very very angry! She yelled and made a scene. It was ridiculous! Normally, this would have been enough to make me not come back, but the owner later came back and passionately apologized, which impressed me. Also they were busy, so I figured that played into the food quality and service. Fair enough, so today I gave them another shot. Never again! First of all, the food took a long time to get out (despite there only being four other tables) and I can tell you, it was not homemade as they claim. The hash browns were of frozen Denny's variety and my biscuits and gravy were cold! And the gravy was definitely instant. The food in itself I would give maybe three stars to, because it was average, but I noticed something on my way out which sealed the deal for me permanently on the backwoods cafe. I saw a sign by the door (pictured below) which says they refuse service to anyone "especially bob brown" who, for those of you who aren't local yocals, is another local business owner. Also, let me add in here I have no relations to the brown family nor do I work for him, but I thought calling him out was so rude and unprofessional of them. The owner here is pretty petty and small considering she calls people out on the signage in her restaurant and becomes enraged when customers reasonably complain about her low quality food. So much for a hometown feel. No thanks backwoods cafe, never again.

Random find thanks to Yelp! It was really good and hearty. I ordered a Mexican scrambler. I forget what my company ordered but I remember her loving it. Service was good, fast. It appeared that were multiple levels and so there's plenty of space. They don't have very many drink options. It might only be coffee but that's not a deal breaker. If you're in the area it wouldn't hurt to check it out!

  • Luiz R.

If you feel like having breakfast at Dennys or Sharis, DONT!! THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO! Great Food. Omelettes, hashbrown, pancakes, biscuits&gravy bacon or sausage the list goes on. Get anything on the menu. You can't go wrong!

  • Trish H.

Great food.Excellent service. Waitress was very sweet. Food was hot. Red potatoes were great. Meximix was good also. Chorizo with sausage pretty good. Great way to start the day.

Awesome breakfast and comfort food, the staff treat you like family, we love the skillet breakfasts and omelettes, Very, very good.

  • P G D.

Warning to singles or couples: you will not be seated on a weekend unless room in the front dining area - while the back (and upstairs) area remain empty - except, in my case, for one party of three. During the 15 minutes I waited (8:10 am to 8:25 am) three separate couples were denied seating - they left without waiting: In the end I left without eating. (No employee checked in with me during my wait...). A very strange and unwelcoming business model. I cannot comment on the food.

Awesome. Hit it on our way back from Tri Cities. Best Chicken Fried Steak I have ever had!!!

  • Aj T.

Outstanding service. Very nice and welcoming. The food was very good also have the grilled turkey sandwich and the spinach salad. Both very good but you have to try the homemade potato chips. This is a local dive but worth driving a couple miles off highway 82 to get to it

  • Northern L.

If you don't mind waiting forty minutes to be seated, 30 minutes to get your meal, and a very small portion of red potatoes with your breakfast, I'd recommend the place. I heard it was a good place to eat and decided to give it a go. What a disappointment. Come on management, hire more cooks and let's speed things up a bit!

This place was so good we ate here twice in 3 days. We would have eaten here a third time had we known the place we did go to on our 2nd morning was meh. The cafe is located in an unassuming strip. The decor is diverse--country kitsch with a heavy hand of wolves, and a random Dora the Explorer pinned to the wall. Just enough where it's amusing. Service was attentive. The food does take longer but they truly make it when you order it, but it's worth it. Both times we ate here, I ordered the same thing...their French toast as a complete breakfast (= plus the eggs and meat). The toast is coated in cereal flakes before cooking. It is both crispy and soft, while being sweet and warm. The sausage option was either link or patty. I picked link each time and they were large links. The hub opted for a tasty Mexican breakfast each go round. White corn tortillas accompanied the dish and the scrambles were tasty and spicy with chorizo or bell peppers, onions, cheese...just a lot of tasty and fun to put together for a filling meal. They have a lot of options for omelets, scrambles, pancakes/french toast, etc. It's fun to read through the descriptions but it's not fun choosing! We'll be sure to come back to Yakima and when we do, we will be having all our breakfasts here. :)

We're breakfast people and this was by far the best breakfast we've ever had. And the service was outstanding as well! Wish we had one closer!

Mediocre bland food and overpriced bad coffee. The food was as bad as Denny's, but the kitschy decor earns the place one star.

Food was awesome! The staff was incredibly friendly. I ordered the Ranchero Omelette with fried jalapeño. Very happy with this place. Next time we are in Yakima will eat here!

  • Sara S.

Stopped here with my sons for breakfast on the way home from Seattle. It's in a strip mall and easy to miss. The food was good, and the atmosphere very homey and friendly. They were pretty busy and we had to wait a bit at our table but we didn't mind. We occupied our selves counting stuffed Easter Bunnies. They had decorated for Easter, and my sons counted 50+ toy Easter bunny's lining every wall and crevice. They loved it! Makes us want to go back and see what they do for the other holidays.

Very good breakfast place. I had the lodger omelette with added spinach and tomatoes, no gravy. The meat and veggies were fresh and tasty.

Great food. They customized the meal for my husband who is a new vegetarian. The service was awesome! I'd definitely recommend coming here.

Backwoods backdrop - blue ceiling sky, wolves, mountains, bears...Dora the Explorer? Picnic tables inside complete the outdoor setting. The tasty Mexican Chorizo Omelet and pancakes for breakfast reflect the local food culture. On Fridays, cowboys comfort themselves with the best clam chowder in town.

  • Ronda S.

Delightful breakfast place! Very attentive staff. Very, very fresh ingredients. Only real cracked eggs for omelets with all fresh vegetables. Made to order. Bread special ordered multi grain cut thick slice. Open breakfast and lunch only. Really quite large as there are two rooms and an upstairs.

  • Jim H.

If you want a breakfast made from real food and to meet some friendly folks, this is the place! If you just want fast junk food, keep looking.

    (5)
  • Vicki H.

Best breakfast I have had in a long time. The only problem I had was leaving with too full of a belly!!! Try anything with the Chorizo in it. They do have a sign at your table saying it could take some time to get your food when busy basically because everything is homemade. But it is definitely worth the wait if you have to wait.

  • Al S.

I did expect more given the good reviews. French toast was good, as others have noted. Biscuits and gravy medicore: a package gravy mix with out of the bag bisciuts. You get better biscuits at Carl's Jr. Eggs, hash browns, bacon...hard to screw up. Breakfast was OK, but I'd avoid the B&G. Staff was friendly and service acceptable. I like the funky decorations. The staff needs howling wolf shirts.

  • Ed V.

Was visiting Yakima and looking for a fast food alternative for breakfast. Very friendly welcoming traditional diner. Good basic breakfast with several items featuring Mexican offerings. Service was very friendly and customer focused. Lots of check backs if everything okay or more coffee. It was not busy but you get the feeling that attention would not be different if it was busy. It is set back from the street so it was easy to pass by. Well worth the search and stop!

What can I say... I use Yelp often and the positive reviews for Backwoods Country Fare Cafe were spot on! Dora and Juan have such a great place! The service is right on par with the high Yelp comments that I expected and the Backwoods Crunchy French Toasts rocks! :) Thanks for the great service, atmosphere and food!

My husband and I took my folks here while stopping in Yakima to do some wine tasting to fuel up before hitting the wineries, based on the glowing reviews. We were not disappointed but also did not agree with the 5 star review. Service was really slow, albeit friendly, but they did tell us it would be a bit of a wait before they would take our order and we were in no rush so not a big deal at all (all said and done from the time we put our name on the wait list till the time we paid our bill it was a little over 2 hours). They had a ton of girls walking around to refill coffee and water (not taking orders) so our drinks were always full. The food was ok, nothing special. I had the chorizo scramble, it was a little bland, and only contained chorizo and eggs with a little cheese, no onions, peppers, any other items. The baby red potatoes were tasty. I also ordered the home-cooked biscuit that was an added cost (instead of toast) and it was not very good, mushy and tasted like it had been warmed in a microwave. My dad really enjoyed his lumberjack scramble. Everyone else's food was fine, but forgettable. Average price point for breakfast, it was under $10 a plate. Coffee was hot but not strong. All in all it was fine, but nothing that would keep me coming back, besides the really friendly and nice servers.

This place is a hidden gem in a small strip mall, with a very diverse decorating scheme, very clean. Dora, the owner, and Luz our server were just wonderful. Both of them were very pleasant and willing to please. One member of our party wanted a tuna sandwich, which was not on the menu. Dora was more than happy to accommodate her request, and asked her exactly how she wanted it prepared. My friend said it was the best tuna sand she'd ever had, and all our meals were great too. Everything is cooked to order and very fresh. We went back the following morning for breakfast which we also enjoyed. Thank you for two enjoyable meals, Dora!

Once again, Yelp to the rescue! My mom lives in Yakima. My sister and I went to visit and wanted to take her out for a nice breakfast. None of us knew of any places, except Appleby's. Luckily, I had my smart phone. We all ordered the same thing; backwoods french toast (rolled in corn flakes) and the sausage patty. Both were delicious! The service was excellent. They were busy and the only table was in the back corner. They were attentive, without being too much so. Our coffee cups never went below half full. Friendly servers (I think the owner was our main server). Fun experience - will definitely visit again the next time I'm in town.

We were in yakima for a wedding and happened upon this place for breakfast. Hands down one of the best breakfasts we've ever had. Mexi scramble and ranchero skillet with enchilada sauce. Wow!!

  • Tiffany S.

I was greeted and sat immediately when I walked in. I ordered the south skillet and fell in love. I am not a huge breakfast meat person but I decided to keep the sausage in my skillet today. Holy smokes!!! If all breakfast sausage was made this way I would be a changed woman. I ordered a roasted jalapeno and a side of salsa, was probably the choice I've made all week. This is probably my first and last time in Yakima but I will always remember how happy you made my belly

Dope little cafe in Yakima I never heard about before. Some tacky wall art but the food is good!! Glad there is something other than Mel's Diner around. I will return. You have to try the snow slide, it's so tasty.

They had me at "Honey". This is old school good. The service. The food. We love this place. The best non-espresso coffee in town. The chorizo scramble is so good.

Awesome place, yelp steered me right again. I got the eggs benedict, my brother got a skillet of some sort. Both had ample amounts of everything, everything seemed to be made from scratch. We got plenty of coffee refills, and the food came out fresh and hot. Definitely stop by this place if you're looking for an old fashioned home-cooked breakfast or lunch.

We ordered breakfast to go. Our order was perfect and they even sent us with every sauce, jam, spice, etc. we could have asked for. Not *just* a strawberry jam but one strawberry, one blackberry, one marmalade -- a selection so we could choose once we were seated with our meals in front of us. It was very thoughtful and considerate. The staff was very friendly and our order was brought out to us promptly. The food was delicious and exactly what I was expecting. I will definitely come back.

After finding the "free" breakfast at our hotel severely lacking, we set out to find breakfast in Yakima. Without Yelp, this might have been quite a challenge, but thankfully, as usual, the reviews were right on. After being misdirected by our GPS, we found this little gem in an unassuming strip mall after driving by it twice! That was the only disappointment of the day, though, because the food really was just as good as the reviews say it is. We arrived at 8:30 and there were only a couple of other customers seated. The staff assured me that it was NEVER like that. Things picked up and the place was rocking before we left. Hubby had the Ranchero Scramble (perfect cubed red potatoes, onion & sweet peppers, topped with scrambled eggs, with a bit of wonderful enchilada sauce). Dora brought us a side of fabulous homemade salsa to top it off, too AND it came with a deep fried jalepeno on the side. I must admit, I am a salsa snob, and Dora's is absolutely outstanding, kind of similar to mine, even. I had something I'd never seen or heard of before---french toast coated with cornflake crumbs--nice and crunchy on the outside and oh-so-satisfying to the sweet tooth. I also had a side of crisp bacon and it was perfect! Usually when I order crisp bacon, I'm not so lucky! Before we left, I chatted about food and cooking with our lovely host, Dora, and asked her about the place we intended to go for lunch. She agreed with the Yelp reviews that Los Hernanadez had great tamales, although when asked who makes the best tamales, she said, my momma! Alas, our intended lunch spot was closed for the holiday weekend, so I guess we'll have to make another trip to Yakima---and definitely another trip to the Backwoods Country Fair Cafe!!!

Do not quite understand the YELP ratings for this place. It is okay, but nothing special. Basically like a non-chain Dennys or Ihop. Meh! I have had much better, elsewhere, but you won't be food poisoned (unlike some of the chains in this genre) and it is edible.

The service here was exceptional - my coffee never had a chance to get cold and I felt more pampered here than at most expensive places in Seattle. The food was delicious, prompt and reasonably priced. Don't be fooled by the location on the strip-mall; this place has an awesome breakfast proposition. Will return again when back in Yak!

Pretty solid breakfast place, if you don't mind the wait. It took a very long time to get our food (40 minutes). They even have signs at every table warning you that your food is going to take a while to cook and they are doing their best. If kitchen turn-around is such a known problem, wouldn't you do something to remedy it other than excuse it away with a sign placed on the table?! On the positive, this place is very mom-and-pops in decor, has friendly servers and, as a result, you can tell they have a loyal following of locals on the weekends. The eggs are cooked properly to your order, the food arrives hot (when it finally does arrive) and everything tastes fresh enough but some things are a little over seasoned, like the country gravy (soooo much garlic!). Overall, it was good comfort food but nothing that out-shined other breakfast spots I've visited. I'd go again if in Yakima, but wouldn't make a trip for it.

First Impression: *Similar in area (but more sparse) to Evergreen Way in Everett Wa. *The cafe is in an old beat down strip mall. Not even a mall, just a strip building. *Mexican influenced food with indoor decor of a northern Minnesotan cafe (wolves, loons, canoes, pine trees, etc.). *Not very good seating arrangements and the best table in the house was taken up by the dish boy who was on break and just reading a newspaper. *Menu is really, really hard to read. The food: Best breakfast I have had in a while, and I eat out for breakfast at least once per week in the Seattle area. I had the Ranchero omelette. Super flavorful, eggs perfect, vegetables crunchy, delicious. The enchilada sauce they put on it is really great and has a lot of pepper flavor. None was greasy including the hashbrowns. Price point is right on, 10 bucks. Service: A little slow Yakima is full of overly priced crappy food! Backwoods is a saving grace.

As others have mentioned hotel breakfasts are usually lacking, as was the case at ours and so we went in search of a better option. Using Yelp as our guide we were directed to the Backwoods Cafe based on the reviews and location. Although a bit apprehensive seeing that it was located in a strip mall, we made our way in and we're directed to our choice of tables by one of the wait staff. Looking over the menu, the prices were reasonable and although the layout could have been better we finally decided on coffee, the Backwoods Cafe Special (2 eggs, 1 hotcake and 2 bacon or sausage) and the Chorizo Scramble, w/ red potatoes and corn tortillas. As we waited for our meal our coffee was refilled and topped off without wait which was nice. They also have real half and half not the fake stuff, which is a minor thing, but important for us. It did take some time for our breakfast to arrive, even though there was only one order that we could see ahead of us. They do let you know on their menu that every egg is cracked to order, so we expected it might take a little longer than usual. When our food arrived it was exactly as we ordered with no problems and very good. Light pancake, crisp bacon and scrambled eggs for me and my boyfriend said the chorizo was the best he's had. The only complaint was that the tortillas seemed to be store bought, we were hoping for homemade. Overall a great spot for breakfast! Very friendly attentive service, good food and good prices. My only suggestion would be to go when you have time, don't go expecting it to be a quick meal.

Best Yakima breakfast place hands down. Loved the Chorizo scramble and the Backwoods french toast...their sausage was pretty great also, but to top it off my cranberry juice was served in a chilled glass!! We will be back for sure!

Husband and I stopped here for some breakfast today and both of us were pleased with our meals & service. Coffee was promptly topped off and the service was actually pretty fast considering there were many tables full. I ordered the Ranchero's Omlette and it was delicious. I really liked the fact that the veggies were still crisp in the omlette. My husband ordered the fried chicken skillet and it was quite tasty. I only wish that this place was a little bit closer...but at least I know it's only an hour away if we truly get a craving. :)

Loved it. The kids lived it. Beautifully presented and reasonably priced. Great service. Portions were big enough to satisfy and the food was great. Ingredients were high quality and the experience was completely satisfying. Cannot wait to come back into town and visit again!

It is a nice place and the server is very friendly, but behind a nice server is a trapt. We were sitting down there for 15 minutes , finally the server came to us saying that they couldn't take our order up to 15 minutes or so because they just getting large order of group of people. My husband say alright, and we were patiently waiting after 15 minutes waiting they took our order and we still to wait another 30 minutes. And now we already wait for an hour and still haven't got our food. If you guys in a hurry don't come here unless you don't mind to wait for a long time. The food was good though.

Sandwiches were good. Kids chicken looks like frozen store bought. Kids hated it. Grilled Robert was better than Reuben. Robert is same as Reuben except it has turkey instead of corned beef. Turkey was more flavorful than the corned beef in my opinion. Others here have over rated this place. At best it was 3 and a half stars.

My husband and I are from the west side of the mountains, he is now living in Yak going to school (I am still on the west side). So, when we were looking for really great breakfast, I did not get my hopes up...but holy cow! This is THE BEST BREAKFAST I HAVE EVER HAD! That is no overstatement. The service is great, the food is beyond fantastic, fresh, and homemade without all the grease you get at your normal greasy spoon restaurant. We will go here again and again!

I came across this place using Yelp. It was as good as the reviews. I am a Texan and love my breakfast, Dora did not disappoint. You have to get the extra roasted pepper, it was a great breakfast, worth the drive from Seattle. It is a little off the main road, but not hard to find.

was it yakima for a short time and found this restaurant. The service was slow but the food was just perfect. will go to this restaurant again when I am in yakima. I especially liked their backwoods french toast which had the crushed corn flakes on them. And my eggs were done perfectly

A great place for breakfast. Lot's of options. Hubby had cornflake crusted french toast and loved it. I had chorizo skillet and added jalapenos and corn chips with scrambled eggs on top. Next time I think I will ask them to scramble the eggs right into the whole dish. Very good and service was great! Nice people and everything was homemade. Nothing from the food service truck. We'll definitlely be back!

My spouse and I fancy ourselves as big foodies. Yelp steered us to the Backwoods Café and we were thrilled. The food was thoughtful and delicious and the service was very user-friendly. Don't miss this place for breakfast.

Unique and delicious! I can't believe no one has reviewed this place! Where else can you find french toast breaded in cornflakes and also get some of the most delicious chorizo of your life? I like that they include jalapenos as a side and their hollandaise is good and authentic! The decor is fun and kitschy with velvet horse paintings, moose tablecloths and wooden signs. They have a sign at each table asking customers to be patient because every egg is handcracked and everything is made to order. We did wait a bit for our food but we had a large party and it was entirely worth it and one of the restaurant owners (Dolores I think?) waited on us the whole time, was extremely accommodating about adjusting orders and was just very charming in general. One word to the wise - come here with a big appetite!

We found Backwoods on Yelp so I figured we would check it out. The reviews don't lie. This place offered up THE BEST breakfast I've had in I don't know how long. My husband and I opted for the regular two egg breakfast, he getting sausage and I getting bacon. He remarked that the sausage was the best he'd had in a long time and my bacon was perfect. I ordered the baby reds for my potato choice and asked for a side of salsa. Dora remarked that she makes her own daily and WOW it was awesome. I also got a side of roasted jalapenos, which are cooked fresh to order. We also noticed that this place is a hidden jem, as you cannot see it from the road. All of the local old timers were in and out and Dora knew each of their names and they all seemed to have a friendly rapport. I would say I'd be visiting again, and if I am ever in this area (not likely, as I have no interest in ever visiting Yakima again) I will definitely pay Dora a visit. In a city as dire as Yakima, Backwoods is a true treasure.

First off, the name is misspelled here - it's the Backwoods Country Fare Cafe (versus County). It's set back from 1st street on the south side of a small strip mall and it's a great little breakfast restaurant! Much larger inside than it appears, it is decorated country style with a friendly ambiance and staff. Cute kids menus - they are laminated inside the front cover of "Early Reader" hardback books so the kids can order and then read their story book (worked perfectly for our little ones). They have the usual breakfast offerings but have created a variety of unique twists on the entrees. The Backwoods French Toast rolled in crushed cornflakes is wonderful - crisp but not overly sweet. My husband had the Snow Sliders - poached eggs on biscuits covered in a sausage gravy and hollandaise sauce; rich but not a scrap was left on his plate. The usual potato offerings are expanded by also having home cooked small red potatoes as a choice; nice change of pace. Service was spot on - no issues there and was timely for a home cooked meal. Lunch entrees are also available but those will have to be sampled on another trip. We will definitely return!

It went like this. We drove north from San diego for days on end stopping only for spencer, restroom and shots of whisky and even then we only stopped briefly until we had reached the mighty land of Sasquatch and delirium. Perched high off the Columbia river floor we consumed copious amounts of vitamins and minerals in order to fortify our bodies for battle in the gorge. There were thousands of others, all with their eyes on the prize. Dancing late into the night and blasting the nearby cattle with electronic manifestations of sexual taboo and telephonic erotic violence. After days and days and night after bloody nosed night our fickle frames grew weary and frail. Those who chose to stand upright in the night did so with an air and grace unlike any a sasquatch had ever born witness and those who fell victim to the perilous cases of guy on tent (GOT Syndrome) soon became those formally known as those who chose to stand upright in the night. AKA Those who Sat. Stewing together the last of our mortal sustenance, we wept into our spoons and crumbled beneath the majesty of such malevolence and banality in the face of unbridled natural wonder. Over taken by enhanced reality and undone by its folly, we managed to cobble our possessions and trophies back into the space ship where we soon gathered to consecrate this turning point in our journey. A cold breeze blew across the gorge and what was left by those who stood and sat upright was a complete wasteland reeling in the aftermath of a four day departure from the dimension that most of us reluctantly call reality. A farce, a tease at best, this hole bore deep into our bellies and left us with sharp unending pain that crippled our minds, fractured our judgement and dismantled control of more bodily functions than I care to admit. Yet hope was not forgotten nor lost in such tragedy. A light or beckon shown miles into the west upon consideration, a Hunky Jesus of Edible Equip presented itself. Yakimas own BackWoods Cafe was a diamond in the rough of these sparse northern lands. Each of us requesting nourishment of our own decide lead to an experience in oral ecstasy so powerfully righteous that we found a morsel of dignity buried deep in our souls. Enough to replentish our mangled bodies, fresh from the underbelly of humanity.
