I must say that even if I liked rum, I probably wouldn't return. The service was rather slow, the food was mediocre, and the atmosphere was oddly a bit too kitschy and overdone- and I like overdone in a lot of senses. I've only heard negative things about service, particularly for large parties when you'd think extra care would be taken. The portions on the food were small, which was fine by me considering it wasn't all that enticing regardless but it seems it's kind of a love/hate relationship with this place for many. For me, I stand between- just not really caring to return.

Tacoma cabana is an awesome bar. I love how it has such a welcoming feeling. The bartender/owner John was very personable and made the best drinks. He makes his own combinations so it's nice to change it up. I would recommend this bar to all my friends and I'll definitely be back.

Favorite Tiki bar ever. Jason is an excellent and personable bartender. Fun atmosphere and more rums than I could ever hope to try. Be warned it gets busy immediately upon opening and stays pretty busy throughout. Definitely a good first stop of the night.

Still a month later & this dude continues to add to his comments. Also, I did not receive a private message, neither did my spouse. Your supposed drop cam narrative must be very high tech as you can hear "inappropriate comments" left by our party. For the record, the party I was with was mature, polite and sober. There was one individual who did not tip- can't say I blame him. Despite the poor service, my spouse and I tipped, as did everyone but the one couple. We knew our bad experience wasn't all the waitress' fault. The more interaction I have with this person Robyn (Jason A.) the more I'm realizing WHY this restaurant was so terrible. How can a business prosper with such horrible management? Someone who harasses Yelp reviewers even a month after the event. A good team of managers sees potential for improvement, sucks it up and gets over it. While I work in a customer service role, I don't always believe that the customer is right. But I believe that you are in control of your response and your reaction to criticism or advice. You have - hands down- the WORST demonstration of management that I have ever seen. (I might even say it's now to the point of cyber-bullying) (what?!) so please. Do yourself a favor, stop making yourself look petty, defensive and desperate and go improve your seedy little restaurant.

After having a horrible experience at "The Library" due to a rude self righteous bartender, we came here. It was almost closing time but the bartender/ owner welcomed us with open arms. They had over 200 different rums. I didn't think I was a big rum or ginger beer but the bartender made the most wonderful concoction with Bundaberg Ginger beer and some Chairmans Reserve Spiced Rum. He even let us sample a few different rums. It was awesome - He even gave me the bottle of ginger beer to drink. It was great just by itself. We sat and talked to the locals. It was a little quiet because it was closing time. They had a Hawaiian/Tiki vibe it was very relaxing and welcoming environment. I heard the food was pretty good too. I would def hit this place 1st next time to chill and have a few good drinks.

I LOVE TIKI BARS! This is the best tiki bar I've been to in the state of Washington. Damn shame I had to drive 30 miles to get to a tiki place that had strong drinks. We were the first to walk in when they opened on Saturday at 5pm (kind of late....but I get it. The decor was like I stepped right into Tahiti and they had white tablecloths (fannnncy). I have this obsession for drinks that are set on fire and guess what....they had one. I wish I remembered the name but it was huge, strong and delicious. All the things I love in a drink. The waiter was real nice and gave me a heads up that there is a party room you can rent in the back for birthdays. I love this place and can't wait to go back.

And yet again Jason and the tiki crew have gone above and beyond. The facility is great (with some recent upgrades), the drinks are amazing, and the atmosphere is relaxing. This exactly what a bar should be like. You stop in, forget your stress, and leave happy. Love drama?... Don't come here.

This place is awesome!!! Great food, handcrafted drinks... Very unique... And everything is from scratch! I had the kona coffee steak and the swizzle of the damned and loved it all! Nice job Tacoma Cabana for having the coolest bar in town ;) Jason and Robyn are truly such innovative and creative bar owners!

By far the destination location for craft cocktails in the Pacific Northwest. They boast a great menu of fresh made food alongside those cocktails - with enough flavors to please any palette. I highly recommend the Pu Pu Platter (rumaki, yum!) to start, then finish with the Kona Coffee rubbed steak. The highlight of your experience is without a doubt the handmade craft cocktails from owner/bartender Jason Alexander. He masterfully combines rums, juices, and more to create a host of drinks and custom creations. Sit at the bar and get a front row show Jason making cocktails - it's an added treat! The atmosphere is great - very tropical/tiki - complete with reruns of Gilligan's Island on the TV! Background music is very nice, and the restaurant isn't too loud. I hear they will be opening the other half of their building to the public soon which will have a steampunk vibe and feature high end bourbons and whiskey... Very stoaked for this!

This place is great. We came downtown to actually go to Matador but it was so packed I was like 'hell no!' Tacoma is Tacoma so you cannot and should not ever be in a crowded area with young straight hoodlums. They might be from god-knows-where some podunk town and start fighting with you or trying to sleep with you. Screw that. So looked across the street and saw this neat-o looking place. There were a few underage hoodlums outside the door but the door man was keeping them out. Anyways- entered this Polynesian looking bar and were seated right away. The service was quick, which was nice because the girls I was with warned me that the last time they came it was the exact opposite. Food: we tried a few apps. I liked the meatballs. In fact that's the only think I remember eating. Oh there was chicken skewers too which were average. Drinks: Well, let's just say that the drinks here are AMAZING. I am not kidding. Here is a warning: you have to like booze to come here and drink. They were so good. I had two of the zombie makers and they were out of this world good. My friends had a few others and they loved them too. Will be back? Only if find myself in Tacoma. If you find yourself in Tacoma, you might want to try it out. If you live in Tacoma, you might want to move.

My husband and I came in to have a special date the night before he went to Afghanistan. We had a blast. Great atmosphere. Amazing Drinks. Yummy food (Must try the pupu platter) Friendly Service. Can't wait to go again when he returns! This will be our new spot when we go downtown.

This place is a hidden jem. The bartender took special care with the making of our drink...the volcano bowl, which is a two plus person drink. It was beautiful and entertainment in it's self. It tasted delicious and was plentiful when it comes to alcohol content. There was quite a large menu of specialized beverages, which I liked. Most places stay within the box of beverages but they made their own. I will be back again and plan on taking advantage of thier floor rental for parties. I would recommend anyone to try this place out.

Been here twice- and both times the drinks were strong (like strong, STRONG) and the food was great! I have never had an issue with service either. They have the whole tropical theme going on, which is kind of cool but also slightly cheesy, but it is ok- I can handle it. Also be prepared to struggle with parking. After all, it is located in one of the busiest sections of downtown Pac Ave, bar/nightlife wise. I will say their black bean burger is fan-freaking-tastic! Even meat eaters won't be disappointed! I look forward to exploring more of their menu.

Update on Tacoma Cabana: Tacoma has some great emerging mixologist bars. As of April 2015, two bars sit at the top: Hilltop Kitchen and Tacoma Cabana. The Cabana is the unparalleled master of rum and Tiki drinks in Tacoma and likely Washington State having over 200 unique rum bottles....some of which are very rare. Unless you have been here before, you will experience drinks which you have likely never heard of or experienced before.

Happy hour during the week is hands down a 5 star place to eat/drink at, however Friday and Saturday nights are a hot mess. I've been here several times and have seen the good, the bad and the ugly but they pretty much balance each other out. The day staff during the week are super friendly and helpful when choosing drinks and food. They give honest opinions and make you feel like a valued customer. The environment is clean, open, and tiki friendly. The drinks are crafted to perfection and cute.....especially the mai tais in a pineapple. Food is freshly made and desserts are amazing! The weekend staff are horrible. It's hard to get seating and the bar isn't big enough to accommodate those just wanting to get in and out. I really wanted to love this place and give it a higher rating so I came a few times to see if they were just having an off night. Nope. It's so busy; you have to wait to be seated, wait to get a menu, wait to get your drinks and wait to get the bill.....totaling an hour and a half for something that should have been less than a half hour for 2 drinks. They don't have enough bartenders or servers to meet the needs of the customers. And you can definitely tell they aren't working for tips on the weekend. I feel like the place changes completely between the week and weekend. I think consistency is key. The manager should look into that.

Great place for fun drinks and food. We tried several different drinks, the piña colada was bright and fresh, the jet pilot is on fire (literally and figuratively), and there's a drink served in a pineapple! The food is also good, tried a burger, the breakfast, and both appetizer platters. Plenty of food for 4 adults, all delicious. The service was wonderful: attentive, cheerful, knowledgeable, and engaging without being annoying. The décor was fun without being too kitschy, no leis or Hawaiian shirts. Will definitely be going back.

This bar is my new favorite place. It has very cheesy, yet classy "island style" decor, which is flipping awesome! Plus, their Mai Tais are dope and the bar tenders are very knowledgable. I'll be in Tahiti in September, so it sorta take me there...sorta.

The good...drinks if you can get them. Food decent. Pork sliders the best out of the selection of food. The bad...super slow and just poor service. The place had a big party going on so we were very patient. First round of drinks took a while but it was ok since we knew to be patient. The second round of drinks took over 30 minutes and not all the drinks came. One of the drinks never arrived and when we advised the waitress she said it was being made. Another 15 minutes goes by when I gave her the eye nod. I saw her go to the bartender and clearly they forgot it. It also didn't help that they misplaced the first order which caused additional delay. No attempt to correct the situation by the waitress or even a sympathetic apology. By the other reviews on yelp the owner keeps saying they are busy on Friday and Saturday. I understand that but at some point that excuse won't hold. Giving 2 stars just because the product seems to be good. 0 stars for apathetic service. Not sure if I will return.

This was hands down the worst customer service experience I have ever had. The only reason I'm giving it two stars is because I'm sure the drinks and the bartenders would have been amazing if we would have had the opportunity to be seated. This was 100% a failure of the front of house staff in not knowing how to properly manage a reservation/seating arrangement or how to treat and communicate with their customers. My boyfriend attempted to make a reservation for a group of 6 on Saturday night. I love the tiki scene and have been wanting to hit up this bar for a very long time. We made the journey from Seattle and when we finally arrived at Tacoma Cabana we were all so excited! We checked in with the hostess and he asked if we had a reservation. My boyfriend told him that he called in earlier to make one and was told that reservations weren't necessary. So we are put on a waiting list for a 10-15min wait. He takes our name and phone # and tells us that he will call when our table is ready. No problem! We go next door to kill some time. 20min go by...30min go by. We decide to jump to another spot and check in with them on the way. We completely understand that sometimes it takes a bit longer than expected and we are willing to wait. When we swing by to check in, they say (2 different hosts now) it will be another 15-20min. Ok, I tell him we'll come back and check in with him in 20min. He tells me that's not necessary, that he'll call. We're at the next spot and another 30min goes by. We decide to hit another spot while we wait for the call. I ask a local if they know anything about Tacoma Cabana and if the wait is usually this bad. Their immediate response is "Did you slip them any money at the front? That usually works." What?! No. I did not. Should I have? A total of roughly 2-2 1/2 hrs has now gone by. We're at another bar across the street patiently waiting for that phone call and slowly sipping on one drink (wishing we had some awesome tiki drinks!) when I make my final attempt to see what's going on. We're tired and frustrated, but willing to give it one more shot. I walked across the street and opened the door to no hostess. A woman quickly comes up to the front to greet me. I tell her we've been on the list for 2-2 1/2 hrs now and she quickly responds "oh, for the group of 6?" Yes! That's us. I'm excited thinking we're finally going to get in. She says "oh, yeah, we're closed". Yup. Closed. After being told 15min, then 20min, with absolutely no communication along the way (we never once received a phone call from them) and waiting for over 2 hrs, they are now closed. She said "well we open at 5pm, maybe you should come earlier next time" and "we usually only make reservations for 10 people or more". Worst night ever. All it would have taken is one phone call or some realistic expectation on seating time and we wouldn't have waiting around Tacoma for over 2 hours for no reason. We could have been spending our time elsewhere, not wasting time until we thought we could get into a place we never were going to get into. Completely disappointed...really wish this would have lived up to the expectations I had for it.

I've gotta admit, I was not expecting to enjoy this place as much as I did. I ended up here with a large party of about 8-10 people while celebrating a birthday. From the outside it looks like a tacky little plastic tropical dive bar but the inside is expansive and totally decked out in tiki gear. Our whole table ordered mojitos which our waitress said the bartender could make for us even if it wasn't on the menu. The overall quality of the mojitos was pretty lame but the next round of drinks we ordered off the menu were all fantastic! I ordered the Mac Nut Chi Chi which is a creamy blended concoction similar to a pina colada but with the flavor of macadamia nuts and it was incredible. I also ordered the pupu platter which came with two chicken skewers w/ peanut sauce, two pineapple pieces wrapped in bacon, two bbq meatballs, and two mini sliders with Hawaiian pork on sweet buns. All the food was good and I definitely had trouble eating it all. If you are looking for flaming drinks and fancy tropical works of art this is place to go!

Went here with my best friend and had some of the tastiest food and drinks in Tacoma. We ordered the poo poo platter for food to share and it was a perfect portion size for us. The drink I ordered was a perfect combo of coconut pinapple and nutmeg. The server a younger gentleman was extremely friendly and courteous to make sure we were happy. I do hair and recommend this place to clients on the daily! I really love the theme they have. I will deff be back.

Took forever to wait for a seat I recommend going in, I seen 3 different groups of ppl come in and get seated right away when they told me I had to wait for a phone call. All I wanted was a seat for 4 ppl, saw 3 tables open up with four seating and automatically gave it to those 3 separate groups that came right in 30 mins after our group did when I was waiting. Finally got our seats almost 1 hour later and took the waitress another 25 mins, I waved at them and asked for help for drinks and food got looked at like I am crazy. The male waitress was very polite and helpful made sure sure we got good seats. We left after being there for 2 hours waiting to get served. I however would try it again at a different time. The place was clean and friendly environment just not going there on a weekend.

The finest drinks in all of Tacoma are made by a man in a Cthuhlu Fez whilst Gilligan Island plays silently in a neverending loop on the tv. My favorite thing to do is go in to Tacoma Cabana during the week on a Wednesday or Thursday when it's a little bit quieter, pull up to the bar and let Bartender Jason make me anything he feels like. Sometimes I'll be like, "Work kicked my ass today, Jason. Make the pain go away." or "I have a meeting at 8am tomorrow, let's just take it nice and easy tonight, sir." For the fastest service all week long sit at the bar, but this place is on island time, so just show up ready to chill and take your time and you'll be happy you did.

No stars. We had reservations for a group. We start off and the server tells us we can only sit at one table- even tho there are two in the way back, and our reservations were for 15.. The table comfortably seated 10. So we're all squished in. Takes about 10 minutes to get someone to come to our table. She only delivered drink menus. We keep thinking she'll deliver food menus soon. After 30 minutes of no water. No menus, no chips or any compensation, she tells us that the kitchen is accommodating a large party upstairs and the kitchen is small so we can't order food just yet. We all remained pleasant but then an hour goes by and we still can't order. And we've all drank the ONE small pitcher of water. The drinks we ordered were bad- bad. We finally ask if we can just bring in outside food. They say no- and they don't try to fix it by bringing chips or ANYTHING. Finally one of our party members left for the Matador and brought back 3 containers of to go nachos- we were all hangry by now. Finally, after 3 and a half hours, we asked for checks and left. Horrible. I will never. EVER recommend a place like this. No apologies, no compensation, it was hard enough getting water. For reservations of 15 you could at least have warned us that the kitchen was overwhelmed at the start. We would have gone elsewhere. We ended up trekking to Indochine- so much better. (Service and food)

I LOVE tiki and by no means am I a tiki elitist, but I'm at a total loss on the Tacoma Cabana, which is a bummer given I really wanted to love it, but to me the Tacoma Cabana is truly an "Emperor's New Clothes" situation in that people who want to like the hipster tiki bar may enjoy it simply on those merits. I greatly appreciate a tiki bar that doesn't just mix a bunch of sugary syrups with rum and call it a cocktail and accordingly I have no issue with it taking a while to get drinks made (all hail Hale Pele in Portland, OR), however none of our cocktails even met the mark of "good". What they lack in quality they attempt to make up for in quantity--the tiki drink menu is very extensive. I attempted to ask the server a few questions to narrow down my selection which lead to them leaving for a few minutes to find someone to answer my questions. A couple friends with no tiki experience joined us and made the mistake of asking our server was tiki was--once again our server left to go find someone to answer their question. I get that the server was new, but if you pride yourself on custom crafted tiki drinks it seems like your staff should be able to answer a question like what tiki is before being set loose to serve patrons. The atmosphere is ok--kind of random tiki hodge-podge. Not terrible, it just feels more like a bunch of random tiki paraphernalia than a thought-out design, especially in the back room. It wasn't terrible, but I see no reason to return.

A great place to drink with friends and experience new types of drinks. On several different occasions me and my friends have gone here as a suggestion from a friend who is a long time customer. And boy am I happy that we did indeed attend this bar several times. The customer service is impeccable and the owner is quite friendly, he is always one to make you feel welcome. From the moment you walk in the door he feel a sense of homeliness and at peace. The strange Decor gives it its spontaneous yet well put together atmosphere. It is definitely one that you cannot stop looking around or you're having great conversation with friends over good appetizers and amazing drinks. The strange and eclectic drinks give it it's amazing pizzazz and you will not be able to stop once you start.

Oh Robyn! You are quite hilarious! You lost your composure and now call bullying. Lie to to the Yelp community if you would like. You had a bad day and made a mistake. It's ok. No discount was demanded by me or my mother. Your tale of he said she said is quite humorous! You have not an ounce of professionalism in your body and it seems as though you need to gain control of YOUR restaurant and maybe make sure guests are attended to and seated in a manner you see fit. But thank you for the comical rebuttal and the false claims you are attempting to voice. Cheers and good luck with that attitude!! And of course your employees will corroborate your story! You are terrifying! And might I note that alcohol was not in fact involved :)

I would define this as an artisan rum bar with tiki decorating. Do not expect a run-of-the-mill tiki bar. There are many specialty rums on the shelves and Jason (the owner) and staff have some absolutely fantastic mixed rum drinks. Some good ones are the zombie and lapu lapu. The Mai Tai is more of a caribbean style than Hawaiian. We had a great experience doing happy hour here. The pupu platter chicken sticks were the best food of the night- soft and tender, evenly cooked served with the right amount of spice in the accoutrement sauce. The rest of the pupu platter offers a variety mix. We also liked the guacamole/chips and the flaming creme Brule for dessert. We will return. The only downside is the seating arrangement- I probably wouldn't go here with a big group. It is a great place to meet after work.

I think I might have found my new favorite place to grab food/drinks. The burger was delicious, you can tell they know what they're doing. I got the side salad with blue cheese dressing, it was definitely hand made and not store bought dressing, so good! And the drinks, were amazing. The bartender knows his way around the bar. I definitely would recommend this place to anyone who likes good food.

I have to say I really enjoyed Tacoma Cabana! The food is good and the atmosphere is fun! In addition to serving food the place is also a rum bar. So obviously Steve and I had to try some of their drinks which were fantastic! As far as food goes that too was awesome! Steve got a PuPu Platter which contained various appetizers from the menu. Pretty much everything I tried from his platter tasted great! And he had so much of it just for an appetizer! It really was a meal in of itself if you plan to eat it by yourself. While he enjoyed it he mentioned that most of the appetizers that made up the platter were meat and since we are quasi-vegan he felt it was just a bit much. I ate something lighter and had a vegetarian "hamburger" with a fresh salad. The hamburger rocked and the salad was fresh, very splendid! We didn't stop there on eating either! We got the boatload of guacamole and chips appetizer which was great! They definitely had some of the most vibrant and fresh guacamole I have had since I moved out here! As I said before, the atmosphere is a lot of fun! The restaurant is decked out Hawaiian Style to some extent but there is a kitschiness that goes beyond on that. There are all kinds of Tiki faced decorations and the bartenders(nice touch with the inked arms by the way) are decked out in floral shirts and wearing fez hats. The place has candles as you go towards the backroom and has takes on a atmospheric yet cheerful ambiance. My brother loves this kind of thing so whenever he comes out to visit then I will definitely need to take him here! He kind decorates his house like this!

If this is your first time coming in to Tacoma Cabana you must order the PuPu Platter. It's under $10 and provides you with 4 different items. All of which are fulfilling and delicious! The sliders were heavenly and the chicken was juicy and accompanied a sauce that bursted with flavor. If you're in the mood to get tipsy this place will get you there in no time with only 1 drink. I had the pain killer and then decided to be naughty and get the Jamaican rum punch as well!! The pain killer was absolutely delicious and the rum punch was probably the strongest drink I've ever had though still was quite delicious. I must warn you, it definitely has a kick to it! I've also been fortunate enough to try their burgers which are superb. I had the chicken Moai burger which was succulent and the bun was soft and fresh! Man o man! I love this place!!

Had a great time! This place is super cute. I loved the ambience. The music, decor, food and drinks were all fantastic. My friends and I ordered a smorgasbord of appetizers and everything tasted delicious. I had the piña colada to drink and it too was delicious. The guac was very fresh and had big chunks of avocado in it, which I love. I will definitely be coming back, I think this is my new favorite tacoma hangout.

An authentic Tiki Bar with a "real" Mai Tai that isn't masked with sugared down grenadine and canned pineapple juice! Jason, the owner, is the master mixologist that can create any tiki inspired drink you might crave! Tacoma is lucky to have this hidden gem...a must try!!!!

So my birthday was coming up and well at the age that I am, it's always a hit or miss on what to do, where to go and what I am trying to attain, which is of course a "GOOD TIME!" I heard about a Rum Bar downtown? Can't go wrong with Rum right? well, you could, in excess but I was willing to try, ahaha! Tacoma Cabana, aka the new Rum Bar in downtown Tacoma. Looking over the website I decided to contact them which was via email and inquire about the menu as it's not listed on the website. As I waited on a response, I asked around if anyone I knew had been and those that have been all gave me a thumbs up! Ding! New message from Robyn at Tacoma Cabana- attachment that included the menu, glancing over I decided to go ahead and meet up here and Robyn asked how many would be in my group and offered up a table reserved for all! I did mention I was an Elite Yelper, hey if it works, it works! Robyn is a smart lady and business owner because she provided excellent service from the moment I contacted her! She kept in contact until the night of the party and stayed in constant communication as I was running a little late! The venue is an old establishment I have been too and they did a good job trying to revamp it and make it their own. Our seating was in the rear, which was nice and private. They provided excellent service with our food and drinks, very attentive. The food was pretty good and I loved the variety of drinks they offered! I will definately be back! Looking back, I even got a thank you email from Robyn, but was a little blurry eyed to respond and still need to as she thanked me and my friends for our patronage and hoped we had a great time!!! I hope you get to read this review and know that you did an Awesome Job!! TY!!!!!

Not going to lie, I love this place! The drinks are always excellent. You may have to wait a bit to get your drink because they are handmade drinks, but it is worth it. They have happy hour drinks for $6, but really I'm sure that any drink on the menu would be good. Appetizers are tasty, we had the guacamole, which was so good and you could tell it was made fresh. For dinner I had the Hale Tiki Chicken which was yummy. The place fills up very fast, so it is best to get here early (they open around 5) otherwise you can expect to wait. The atmosphere is nice as well. Sometimes the back room is rented out for private parties, so there is only the front space, so getting here early would be good. Overall, I definitely recommend a stop by here sometime.

The ONLY thing that holds me back from a five star review is the lack of seating and the waitresses. Other than that this place is so much fun! The atmosphere is so unique and you can tell that a lot of time and attention goes in to each drink. There are definitely no cheap mixers used here! Some people may be thrown off by the price of the cocktails, but you really only need two or three to be feeling good and only the top quality ingredients are used. We went here to salvage a failing bachelorette party, and as a final nightcap. This was on a Thursday, and they kept the bar open for us and made sure each girl had exactly the type of drink they'd like. Jason's customer service is truly above and beyond the call of duty!!!

I can't count the number of times I've been to Tacoma Cabana. It is one of only a couple places I'll buy cocktails in Tacoma. The food, drinks, and atmosphere are perfect and the owners bend over backwards to make sure that everybody enjoys their time at Tacoma Cabana. The quick and dirty is that Tacoma Cabana is one of the best tiki bars on the entire West Coast. They have one of the largest rum collections in Washington and what makes TC special is that not only can you get historically correct tiki drinks, but Jason (the bartender) is driving tiki forward by making his own original tiki cocktails. I've been to a lot of bars and I can tell you that very few are doing what Tacoma Cabana does. I've had nothing but pristine service from the entire Tacoma Cabana staff on every single visit. The speed of service is great. The drinks are complex and take time. The food is fresh, cooked properly, and garnished well. That takes time. The Pupu Platter is all meat and is tasty. I love it. You can't go wrong with any of the drinks and if you're not sure, the staff are happy to suggest one. I love them all. Yes. Every single one. Few things in this world are as satisfying as sitting at the bar on a rainy Tacoma night in January, sipping a Painkiller and eating a Pupu Platter. When the aromas hit you and the rum takes hold, you'll forget you're in the 253.

I had a great experience. The ambience was fabulous. I felt like I was at an island bar in Hawaii or maybe Puerto Rico. I ordered the 1944 Mai Tai, my friend ordered a Zombie. We were both happy. I ordered the Po po platter and my friend ordered the chicken skewers. What good fun. I really recommend this bar if you want a good drink and appetizers. looking forward to going back.

The best drinks I've ever had!! The food looked amazing but we only had drinks. It was out first time and I loved everything about this place! The bartender was great and very helpful! I will be back! You must go!

These drinks will knock you out they are so strong!! I let the bartender recommend one for me because the drink list is so extensive I couldn't decide. It was one of the many Mai Tais that they offer. It was very yummy and very very strong. I had to take tiny sips on it. I can not imagine what the alcohol content of the other drinks they make must be, such as The Zombie (limit of 2 per person)! This bar had a really cool and original atmosphere with all the tiki island stuff. It did remind me a little bit of the tiki bar in the Disneyland Hotel in LA. We were lucky enough to get here early on Friday night and get a seat at the bar with a front row view to watch bartender make all the drinks, which was very entertaining. Definitely come here for drinks and cool/different place to hang out. You might forget where you are at for a little bit.

I went on a Saturday night. It was a really cool little bar. Well not really little. Anyways I had the blackout and then the rum bowl. The rum bowl is amazing. I also had the sausage on Hawaiian rolls. We also got the guac and chips which is amazing!!! Best guac I had in a while. I do think that the drinks are slightly over priced.

How have I not been a regular here? Kickass well-balanced tiki drinks from a practitioner of the modern tiki arts. Amazing rum selection. Comfortable space with the right vibe. Pretty epic burger- well-seasoned and juicy enough to run down your arm. The bar and table service were exceptional. We had a great time and will be back time and again. Try the Hurricane - one of the best I've ever had, and I'm such a hurricane fan NOAA tracks me on weather radar.

Wow. Horrible service. Few thing ruin a night out with my lovely wife like bad service. Along the front of the front of the bar the signs say exotic drinks. When I got to the bar I asked what type of exotic drinks they have. A blond female bartender said they are all exotic what do I want to drink. Then it went downhill from there. A bar surrounded by bars should be warm and inviting. This bar was not. We won't be back. My advice walk across the street to any one of the 10 bars.

I can't get enough of this place! I absolutely love the ambiance. The drinks are worth every penny...The owners most definitely paid attention to details. The food is 5 stars no doubt about it. It's a great date spot, or a good spot for a group of girlfriends to hang out! You will not be disappointed.

The wait is long (for anything) but completely worth it. Anytime a restaurant hands you a thick menu just for cocktails, you know you've come to the right place. The mastery of cocktail making here is phenomenal; very pricey though. The food is pretty good too.

  • D C.

The food is not over-done or pretentious. I had a burger and to my taste it was the best burger I've since I can remember; it was not overly sauced or overly seasoned. Wife got some sampler platter - every item was good. The atmosphere is a bit off to me. It does come with the territory for some of these cramped downtown places that are trying to revamp an awkward space, so I understand that some. Besides, an aggressive tiki theme doesn't really call out to me anyway, but it was fine. Place seems a bit small so I could see it getting crowded on happy hour. They had a great little band of three guys playing Hawaiian themed music - very pleasant. Don't know what nights that happens or if it is consistent, but we loved it. Drinks were ok. A little on the spendy side at around $10.00+ each. I think they are overly garnished with umbrellas, flowers, and plastic stir sticks but some people dig that. Personally I'd rather the extra $2.00 I paid for those toys to go toward into my drink instead. We both ordered different drinks that both kind of tasted generically "tropical" to us. They weren't *bad* I just didn't feel that the $20 we spent for two drinks netted us any special beverage experience. Many of them seem to have upwards 4-5 ingredients/alcohols that are all tropical and fruity and I think end up blending to kind of a generic flavor. I would like to try some more adventurous drinks there before ruling out the beverages completely. They have a veritable compendium of sweet drinks. Regardless, even if I didn't return for the drinks I would return for the food. I just had a burger at another place downtown the other night and all I could think of was the one I had here a few weeks before.

Yep, okay, their drinks are really as good as advertised. We visited for some appetizers and drinks, and although the drink proportions were smaller than expected, they delivered on taste, quality, and strength. Atmosphere was good. The waiting staff could have been more attentive, but I am still planning on going back. Rum is back!

Awesome drinks. They are extremely strong, but still taste great. I tried the Fiji Blackout and Captain's Frog, both were wonderful. The food is good, kind of small portions and a little pricey, but tastes really good and is fresh. The ambiance of the bar is wonderful, cool decorations everywhere! Definitely coming back soon!

I like a hip ambience as much as the next 30 some-odd year old gal, but not teeming with hipsters and douche bags (Matador). Especially when I want to stack up several insufferable internet 'dates' in a row in an environment where I feel comfortable and at least enjoy the food and drinks, if nothing else. While you may not leave the house thinking 'where is the nearest Tiki bar?', this place is aesthetically amazing and everything on the menu, including the award-winning drinks, is produced with heart and soul by a couple of entrepreneurs who care about product and environment. From-scratch food with locally sourced ingredients is excellent, craft cocktails concocted with passion and aplomb by Jason Alexander (King 5, Best Cocktails, Western Washington, 2013-14, Weekly Volcano People's Choice Best Bartender/Tacoma) 2014 Iron TikiTender). You may have been on vacation more recently than I have (Hawaii, 2005, good times). Whether you have or not, this place is a sweet respite from PNW life set among the best, coolest part of old Tacoma in a historic building that's been lovingly restored. Go. You won't regret it.

Pupu platter is excellent if you're looking for a variety of food at a decent price. Their drink menu is vast and they carry 215 types of rum! My drink of choice is the Painkiller which is really good. I haven't had any other drinks or food, really, because it's been hard to break away from what I know since I enjoy it so much. It's a bit of an escape from the "real world" - very tiki-ish! I've never come here on a weekend so I'm not sure how busy it gets. I also have only sat at the bar after a workout. It has a few tables in the front and more in the back. There is seating at the bar and along the side wall extending past the bar. They also have a private room which I've peeked into which looks pretty cool for private parties. I would definitely bring friends/family here. PAINKILLER!

What a fun place. We popped in for a drink after dinner at Matador. The thing I really loved about their drink menu was they had everything from strong and powerful to fruity and delicious! Get a drink in a pineapple...I think I will, thanks! There is also a dinning area, a bar area, and a music venue area so lots of different nooks to fit your mood. In the bar area there was a great entertainer playing surf guitar, and in the back room there was reggae. Fun for a group outing or date night. Cant wait to go back!

Saturday night after a movie we stopped by. Atmosphere is very confortable, we moved to the back area and were able to have a conversation without background noise and music. I ordered the beef hamburger was not overjoyed with it until I realized that I had my friends garden burger and she had my hamburger. We decide to swap out the remainder of each others burgers rather than make a stink. Drinks are expensive but I'm told they are very good. Stout draft was superior.

This place makes perfectly balanced tiki drinks! The drink menu is educated, impressive, and delicious. Went for a party of 10 and we all loved the food. Great pupu platter! Can't edit to come back and try the "Surfers breakfast" If your unsure, order the Trader Vic's Mai Tai

I guess my party and I went on an "off" night for them, as I see they have so many positive reviews. We went on a weekend night and had to wait a few minutes. They then gave our table away to someone else. Quickly they found us another table though. I love the theme inside, decorations are very neat. I wanted dessert, and they were out of them. Both kinds that they offer. Disappointing. Our server felt really bad and quickly suggested that she could make us up a fruit/nut/chocolate platter (not on the menu) When it came out, it was very cute and fancy looking. It was also expensive. I appreciate the effort and piecing together what they had. We got our appetizers, fruit/nut/chocolate platter and still our drinks haven't arrived. Waited over 30 minutes, finished our food & Just as we were about to tell our server never mind, our drinks showed up. In our group of 4, the 3 drinks that were ordered, nobody in my party cared for. I get that they are very intricate and from my understanding at least 12 ingredients go into each drink. They are very strong. I guess we just don't have a pallet for their fine mixed drinks. The server was so nice, as she noticed we didn't care for them. She apologized and wanted to re-make them, but by that time, we were just ready to go home. She ended up giving them to us at 1/2 price. Which was great because they were already approx $12 per drink. So my rating of 2 stars due to the long wait, our table being given away, our 30 minute drink wait, sold of the desserts...but our waitress was so very nice and the interior was neat.

We had my boyfriend's 30th birthday party here last weekend. I was so impressed with Robyn and everyone at Tacoma Cabana during the whole process. They were flexible with all of our requests and when changes to our original plan came up. Also, easy to get ahold of and quick to respond to any of our questions. Night of, everyone had a great time and my boyfriend loved it. We were in their party room that was next door and upstairs. It had a pool table and plenty of room and tables for everyone. With a walk up bar, guests were able to order drinks and food and staff would run everything up to us. We had the PuPu platter which was delicious- our favorites were the meatballs and bacon wrapped pineapple. They let me bring a cake in from outside as well. I think that they are turning the party rooms into a second bar sometime in the future and I would definitely recommend both places to everyone. We have had a fantastic time every time that we have been there.

Finally made it to the cabana and was so happy with the service and drinks! Our bartender (owner) was very helpful and so knowledgable! I can't remember everything I learned, but left with a new appreciation of rum and looking forward to going back and trying something new. We had a Hemmingway daiquiri and a rum old fashioned and both were delicious!

Soooooooo delicious! The staff is fantastic and helpful picking out an exotic drink. We had the pupu platter and it was TO DIE for! Also feels like you teleport into a little tropical paradise as soon as you walk through the door. I would give 10 if it was available! My new favorite spot I can't wait to share!! Check it out if you're in town or looking for a new spot with friends. It would also be a cute spot for a date. Not too loud, and just a laid back, relaxed atmospheten

What a delicious beverage menu! We've had drinks here many times before, so I thought it was time to write a review. This evening, we enjoyed the Rum Runner, along with the house made guacamole and chips. Let me say the Rum Runner was absolutely delicious! It was some kind of amazing concoction of liqueurs (banana and blackberry, I believe), and a 151 Rum...... The drinks are only the beginning. The chips and house made guacamole..... I have no words. I would prefer the guac came in a bowl with a spoon. It's the real deal. Chunks of avocado with just the right seasoning. It's the best in town. And where else can you watch 'Gilligan's Island', while listening to classic Tiki music? And don't forget that the owner is a former Marine, and has served our country, honorably. AND, he's the one in the fez hat, making your drink, like a pro. He took a huge gamble to make this bar, and I count it as a huge success. So go there. And drink there. You won't be disappointed!

Ok, now, looking back, I do want to give 4 or 4.5 stars, but I know I am just picky so fine. 5 stars it is. This place is cutely decorated with nice dark lighting and fun island themes, though some unfortunately obnoxious epileptic disco lights in the back room where we were. There was also a 30 minute wait (that the waitress kindly told us about) for every order, so we doubled up on our drink order. Worth noting, there is also 20% added gratuity for groups over SIX, which seems a bit excessive to me but hey. We always tip at least 20 anyway. Another one of the girls was pretty put out over it, but she was kind of a fussy princess anyway and nobody felt sorry for her. Ahem. We got the $8 pupu platter, which comes with two of everything and is delicious. Very nice little snack, with sliders (my favorite part), some moist and delicious chicken skewers, sweet and delicious meatballs, and I think one other thing. Came with "peanut sauce" which just isn't. It's crushed peanuts in some sort of rum pineapple sauce. The peanuts almost seem an after thought and are too big to actually cling to anything, so mostly it's just a rum pineapple juice. Still good. We also got chips and guac, both of which were very decent. We got a 2 person drink called uhm.. Paralysis? Came in a pineapple. Delicious. $15 seems a bit steep but it was pretty strong and, hey. Tiny umbrellas. We also got a pineappley coconut thing called Painkiller which was way stronger and equally delicious, at a more reasonable $9. My friend KK (haha, I can't spell your name) got a piña colada which, while okay, was pretty bland and coulda used both more piña and more coconuty goodness. And maybe some lime. Anyway, we bought two drinks for friends, plus our two drinks and the platter and chips, and with gratuity it ended up being $60. Which is pricey but we did all have fun, and the drinks were strong and the food good. All in all, I would absolutely return--- but hopefully next time they're not so painfully understaffed.

This place will get you drunk. They have strong ass rum drinks with names like Zombie, Painkiller and Blackout that will get your ass drunk. They even had drinks where they core out a pineapple. Those were pricey but really good and strong as hell. Did I mention that this place will get you drunk? As for food, I ordered the loco moco which is a Hawaiian favorite. The gravy and eggs were prepared nicely, but the ground beef was overcooked. I had to order extra gravy because the meat was too dry, but it was seasoned pretty well. Next time, I might ask them to cook the meat less and try it that way. Overall a good place to hangout, but keep in mind this place runs on Island time. It takes a while to get anything here. Don't go here if you're in a rush.

Great atmosphere, fantastic drinks and food! While making my Mai Tai the bartender pulled out an eye dropper and added half a dozen drops of something mysterious. I asked what it was and he said they don't like to talk about it. Woke up the next morning on a Parks bench wearing a grass skirt. Highly recommended!

Well, This place was voted as the #1 place for Cocktails in Western Washington. And for good reasoning! The lighting and ambiance of this place is perfect. Definitely feels like I went on vacation. The owners Robyn and Jason are extremely warm and make you feel at home as well. And the drinks.... I have been spoiled by such awesome drinks for so long from Jason that it literally feels like I'm drinking sewage anywhere else I go. Seriously. Not even over-exaggerating.

Me and my husband stopped into tacoma cabana last night. Wow the drinks were good. Very large selection of rum. The owner/bartender makes an excellent drink. Not to mention STRong. Not over powering strong -- just a very good, nicely made drink. We had a couple Mai Thais and a couple piña coladas & some chips and salsa. Sat under the tiki bar..watched gilligans island...drank some awesome drinks & had a wonderful time. Can't wait to try the food !! Service was great. Great ambiance and a fun place to go. Thanks for bringing some sunshine, flavor and culture to Tacoma !!

Terrible drinks. I'm not a picking person but the service and drinks here are so awful that I will never step in here again. I mean ever. I assume by the quiet Saturday night here that they will be out of business by the end of the year anyways; but again, seriously disgusting $13 drinks that no one should have ever thought anyone would ever be interested in. Worst place I've been to in years. Sorry Cabana, I usually see the upside of everything but there is nothing here for me to appreciate.

As someone who does work for the Trader Vic's in Portland (which is the nicest, most awesome Trader Vic's I've seen by a wide margin), I've become a huge tiki bar fan. Tacoma Cabana places a premium on the drinks and these would make The Trader proud. Lovingly hand-crafted, freshly squeezed juices and made with the attention to detail he demanded. I only had time for one drink and went for a high end Mai Tai. The recipe was a slight variation on the original Trader Vic's recipe and was quite possibly the best Mai Tai I've ever had (I need to spend more time there to confirm). I didn't try the food, but it looked fine. Honestly, it would need to be downright terrible for me to think any less of the place. The decor is also nice. Not as over the top as many classic tiki bars, but good enough to provide the escapism that is part of the reason people love this kind of place. The music was tiki bar appropriate, which is important. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the name. Makes no difference to me, but it doesn't really conjure up the image of a tropical oasis and I wonder if that will make it less of a draw to people who aren't sure what it is.

They know their tiki drinks and make great ones. I didn't try the food or check out the restaurant but the bar is awesome in drink quality, service and decor. Jason is a great bartender and an even better host. Don't know when I'll make it back to the northwest but when I do the Cabana will be my first stop.

Came here with some friends for a ladies' night out. They have a limited food menu, but everything on it sounds good. I ordered the pupu platter because I couldn't really make up my mind and it was pretty good. The drink menu was impressive, a LOT of their drinks sounded great. I had two of them, and they were both pretty delicious. I think they're slightly overpriced, but I also understand that it takes a lot more to make these drinks than many others. My only other complaint (which ties in to my last sentence) would be that the daiquiri I had was teeny-tiny for the cost, but again it tasted great. I'd suggest this spot for delicious drinks and conversation before a night out on the town.

They're specialty rum drinks are out of this world! The Drunken Helmsmen gets me every time. This bar is certainly a must. From the tiki hut ambiance and the friendly staff to the A+ food and drinks, it's truly a Tacoma treasure.

I absolutely LOVE this place!!! Amazing drinks & atmosphere. AMAZING!!!!!!!! This is one of the best places in tacoma. I haven't tried the food yet but if it's as good as the drinks I surely will not be disappointed!

I am completely flabbergasted by the amount of good reviews this place has. I have been here twice and both times I have been completely disappointed. I gave it another chance, hoping my first experience was just a fluke. The ambiance is ok, service was good--however that's the only nice things I can say regarding this establishment. The food (I ordered fried rice) was extremely salty and tasted like it was from a box. The spam was smaller than a size of a pea and the only saving grace was the fried egg on top- but who could mess that up? The drinks were ok, nothing great just ok. The bartender who wore a weird hat lacked personality and friendliness. I will definitely never return and tell everyone about this horrible place! Tacoma Cabana is a disgrace to the Hawaiian culture they try to imitate.

My first time driven to write a review on Yelp, and the reason being is that the Loco Moco is a disgrace to the Hawaiian culture, very bland, horrible gravy and no macaroni salad? What? We were helped at the bar and ate there as well. Horrible service at the bar and asked the waitress who brought out our food if the owner was there after I tasted the Loco and she points to the bartender and says, "he is the owner". I'm sorry to say, I don't believe it will be around to long but you never know. Good downtown location but there are better options. Forgot to mention, the owner/bartender Jason tells me last night he has never even been to the islands? What?

Just OK - I have been here twice and it's indeed a cute little spot and their drinks and selection are good. It's a bit on the pricey side. But the main thing that brought it down for me rating-wise was the slow service. Both times I went there it took about 20 minutes to get a drink and it wasn't all that busy in there - by comparison we went across the street to the Office and had drinks in like 5 minutes and they were packed. The first time I was there when we were ready to leave we waited and waited for our waitress to come by and finally had to get up and just grab someone else so we could pay. It was frustrating.

Went out the other night. Never been bar hopping in Tacoma before. Started at the tacoma cabana and had a very good mai thai. After I finished my drink I left to try another bar. Several "hops" later I regretted leaving the tacoma cabana. I made my way back and finished the night off on a high note. The food is great. Quesadillas were amazing and so were the chips and salsa, very fresh. The service was amazing, very friendly and made sure I was having a good time. I live in Arlington so the drive is long but I will make the trip again just for this place. Best bar in Tacoma.

Very mellow atmosphere, great place to meet up for some drinks. I would definitely recommend! Beware the Zombie! After ordering food there, I have to say: the food is just as fantastic as the drinks! I ordered the appetizer sampler plate, and it was just flat-out delicious. Seriously. My only regret is that I can't visit more often!

I went here on a date couple weeks ago. It was our first time and are constantly seeking out places that don't suck in Tacoma (it's getting kind of hard now). We started off with a drink served in a pineapple..polynesian paralysis..18$ was a bit much but it was good. We got a pina colada and a painkiller and ended the night with the curry fried rice and the ribs. The flavor was there, the portions were lackluster, especially for the price. The only big complaint I had was the sever was completely clueless about the menu..and the fact it claimed it was a tiki bar. Bottom line, the ambiance is nice and I'll def be back for drinks, not food.

The drinks are worth the rate. Anyone that complains about this place I'm OK with, that means that it will leave me with less time to wait for my next cocktail. Beautifully prepared, fresh ingredients and clean alcohol (little to no hangovers - seriously). The bartenders clearly know what they are doing and (more importantly) legitimately care about what they are doing. Try not to be bogged down by their zealous and over-detailed menu; just ask the bartender what's fresh or interesting that day/evening and he'll shoot you a few fail-safe options. They know the ingredients (in both kitchen and bar) verbatim and you are guaranteed a happy and pleasant buzz regardless of prior mood.

UPDATE: Rating has been changed to 3 stars from 1 due to an extremely kind note from the owners and chalking it up to a one time thing. Stay tuned for another update once we have had the opportunity to give it another chance. JB 3/5/13 If you're going here for drinks it's probably awesome. But then again it's a bar that has a bit of food. If you prize good food and good service - avoid It at all costs. My wife and I went in for dinner. We were completely optimistic and excited for a new restaurant in the area. She ordered the Kona burger and I ordered the panini. It took over an hour for her to get her food. Mine only showed up in a box when we requested the bill at the two hour mark. Her burger was nothing special but one bite of my panini sent it hurtling toward the trash bin. It was nothing more than what appeared to be a package of pepper turkey on a hamburger bun. During the two hours we were there we received a few different excuses. "Everything is made from scratch so it takes a bit longer" (Really?? A sandwich and a burger? I would hope so). "The kitchen is backed up". "Another table had the same order so they thought it was a duplicate." (With the limited menu offerings I would think that this happens more often than not). We certainly hope that they get a more expanded menu (with GOOD food), and improve the service as we would really like to see this place flourish. The idea and theme are awesome and could be a diamond in it's rough stages right now. We won't be back until we have enough time to forget this experience.

I read the previous reviews and I was not disappointed. My Bestie and I try to find somewhere new when we go out and were very impressed. Great service. Almost overly attentive. Atmosphere was fun. Drinks awesome and well worth any wait time. The food is wonderful! Get the Pupu Platter!!! Wow! We ordered the special which was jerk pulled pork nachos and they were good a little dry but after the pupu platter ($9) nothing could have compared. If you are going to be on Pac Ave. this is worth the stop =) I discovered a private room they seem to have for parties and I am planning my next b-day there for sure!

Well, I guess it's time for me to write my five star review from my birthday last year. You welcomed our group in, made a lovely space for us in the back that was inviting and beautiful, served up some amazing drinks and even accommodated my food allergies at the end of your long night. We have visited your FAB spot three times and have perfect service and beverages, even when you didn't know it was me. Stellar!

This is my boyfriend & mine's favorite place to escape to! The staff is amazing, the owners (Robyn & Jason) are just the best, most attentive people around! I always feel welcomed there, like I'm at my own special secret island hideaway. Beyond the awesome atmosphere, there is the food & drinks. First the food: I have not been so impressed by a new restaurant in many, many, MANY years! Everything is so fresh & just cooked to perfection. Everything I've tried on their menu was a mouthwatering masterpiece! Now what you really want to know about is their stellar rum selection & exotic mixed drinks: Last count had them at 120 something different rums from all over the world. I personally am a fan of STROH (mainly in the STROH-KILLER). Jason handcrafts each drink, so meticulously, that you know the finished product be the best drink you've ever had! If you are looking for cheap, crappy, generic well drinks- it would be best to go somewhere else. If you are looking for the best drink ever- than this is the place dreams are made of!

Loved this place! We will be making return visits. Trying to describe this place is near impossible. Fun and cute just don't do it justice. The drinks, though, those things are spectacular....The names make you think of warm sunny places....and as soon as you take your first sip, you feel all warm and sunny on the inside. I was told that all their mixers and "special" alcohols are made by hand, in house. While the service is not lightening fast it's not super slow either, but, hey - you're suppose to be on island time. At first glance the drinks look a little on the high side, pricewise....until you taste one. You get what you pay for, and you know there is definatly booze in your drink....you will need a taxi to take you home if you are not careful. Definately a place to check out!

Stopped in last night with a couple of friends for some good drinks from Jason and the wonderful Pupu Platter. Everything was excellent. Service was quick, got a table right away, and of course the drinks!! Will be back again very soon!!

Great place to relax or party. Different rooms for different venues. Not a typical bar, you have a master behind the bar. All mixes are fresh. Basic menu, but items are exceptional. Sip your drinks people, they can pack a strong punch....pun intended.

My wife's friend recommended this place. We decided to check it out on a Thursday evening. Not busy, about 15-20 people in the joint, between the bar and back dining area. We sat at the bar and were promptly greeted by Jason (the owner) and handed menus. Deciding on pupu's and drinks we scanned the drink and dinner menus. Ordering was a challenge as everything sounded good, drinks and food. We settled on the Pupu platter, Avocado boat and the Caprese salad, a Surf Room Mai Ti and a Painkiller rounded out our meal. The drinks were big, fast, and strong so they disappeared way to fast. The Avocado boat sailed in at the same time our drinks were ready, great guacamole and chips to start. Then came the Pupu plater and Caprese salad, both very good with a nod to the sliders and meatballs. Round two of the drinks brought us a Golden Shellback and another Mai Ti that was so good I can't remember the name, wink, wink. On a whim we ordered another plate of meatballs, just as good as the first batch. It's as if you just found your favorite tiki bar right off the beach. The decor is very tropical, thatched roofs, surfboards, fish tank and of course tikis everywhere. Then came the painful exit to the rainy Tacoma night, oh well it give us that much more of a reason to return, and return we will.

I live in California and wish the Tacoma cabana was my local hangout!!! The food was AMAZING!!!! I tried my friends dishes and they were unbelievably delish as well. Now onto the drinks, they will blow your mind. I honestly can't decide which I like better, the food or the drink. Which is why I wish they were here in Cali... I'll just have to wait till I go back to Washington. This will def be a "must do" on my list when I come home!!!

Fun island dining experience. They did a fantastic job creating an island atmosphere and great food for downtown Tacoma diners.

Great place! There's a wide variety of island drinks made with bartender-concocted secret ingredients to choose from, all of which are tasty. Watch out, they're also strong! The food is fantastic and reasonably priced, especially during happy hour. Service is very friendly and top notch. The front section offers some casual seating as well as dining tables and, or course, the bar.

Wandered in here on a quick detour to look around downtown Tacoma on our way back to Portland. Haven't seen Tacoma for years and must say, it has some great things going on. Tacoma Cabana is definitely one of them. This is a serious tiki bar that does it right! We didn't eat but what was served around us looked good. The drinks; holy shit the drinks were strong and delicious! The bartender is a serious artist and made us the best drink/mai tai either of us have ever had. The atmosphere was totally laid back and friendly, service was fast and there were lot's of smiles. Felt like family, we'll be back!

  • Devan L.

Loved the atmosphere and drinks here! The tiki bar was awesome and the Mai tai got me tipsy! The menu is pretty small, but maybe once the place has been open longer they'll add more variety. I think they should add some more authentic hawaiian food, like kalua pork and cabbage. Also, the loco moco gravy was pretty bland. We will be back for sure. Hopefully they won't be out of the fried rice next time!

  • Sonja S.

Robyn and Jason have created what will surely be a hot gathering spot for Tacomans. I work late and appreciate a menu that isn't the same old bar food. We had the jerk chicken. It was simply prepared--moist and delicious. The sauce was just spicey enough and the fruit kabobs were a nice touch. We wanted to chat so we sat in the back. Great vibe--feels like you are outside. If you want more action there is music and laughter in the front of the house. Great service and stellar attention to detail. Can't wait to go back and check out other menu items. Fabulous decor--will be a welcome oasis in the middle of our long grey and rainy winters!

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
