Their only competitive advantage is that they deliver. Period. My husband and I are currently waiting for our delivery person to show up at our house. After placing our order with the rude lady that answered the phone we have now been waiting an hour and twenty minutes for our food. When we called to check the status of our order five minutes ago the same rude lady had us on hold for about five minutes (no lie). When she got back on the line to check the status of our order she quickly told us it was on its way and hung up. From now on we will be ordering our food from somewhere else and picking it up.

Positives - I really like their sesame beef and it's in the neighborhood. Their hot tea is nice. Negatives - it's next to a creepy looking "lingerie" store. There's nothing exceptional about anything else. In fact, I've passed it for years without noticing it.

One star for delivery.....rare for Tacoma. If you plan on having some sub-par Chinese delivered, make sure you know the distance between your house and the restaurant. They have twice tried to tell us that we are not in their delivery range, but we are within it by 2-3 miles! As for the food, nothing noteworthy about it. Cheap, greasy, pre-frozen food. Enough said.

Well. It's really close to our house. That's the best thing about North China Garden. And the people are very nice. The lunch combos are really cheap. When will there be really good Chinese in Tacoma?

We liked this place and will definitely go back! It's been a long time since I ate Chinese, and this totally hit the spot. I went after a long day at work--started with the vegetarian eggrolls (average) and the deep fried wontons. I didn't even want the wontons, but they were fresh, hot, and doughy. I got the Hunan spicy bean curd. It contained deep fried tofu and fresh veggies (broccoli, carrots, mushrooms, pea pods), mini-corn, and water chestnuts in a brown sauce. Delicious! It looked and tasted exactly like I wanted it to. My partner got Shrimp with Snow Peas which she said was "perfectly seasoned" and "the shrimp were tender and not overcooked." Both portions were generously sized. It was 8:30pm on a Wednesday night, and we were the only ones there. The décor was nothing special, but the service was friendly and quick. Yep, it was Americanized Chinese. Yep, next to a sexy store (dessert? ;-) ). Yep, T-town needs good Chinese. But writing this review is inspiring me to go to the fridge and grab the leftovers, even though I ate dinner less than two hours ago! My partner is raving as she eats the rest of her shrimp..."this food is good!"

North China Garden is a great place for Chinese delivery. I have not eaten there in person but they friendly and deliver quickly to your home. The biggest reasons why I like them is that 1.) They participate with on line ordering/delivery apps and you can schedule your delivery (which is awesome) 2.) They will substitute/remove/add/go light or heavy on anything you want to the order. I am sensitive to MSG and they will make sure to remove it from things that they can (appetizers like egg rolls they can't) and I really appreciate that. The Family Style Dinner combinations say they feed 2 but they really could feed 3-4 people, as they are very generous. My favorites are the Sweet and Sour Chicken, the Beef and Snow Peas, and their Fried Rice is so worth the extra couple of bucks charge in the Family Style Combo. When it is chilly outside, and you have a hankering for some great simple Chinese food made your way, this is a great option and you don't have to get out of your comfy clothes to go out.

The food at this restaurant is not bad, it is definitely American Chinese, I love that they deliver, but they are rude. The last time we ordered from them, there was an issue and they were very rude on the telephone and did not correct the problem. That was eighteen months ago and it was a mistake to try again. They forgot part of my order and then argued with me about it, then told me they were busy and I would have to wait over an hour for it. Don't waste your time or money.

Yes, this is Americanized Chinese cuisine, but it is by far my favorite in town, is always cooked to order and absolutely delicious

This place was very tasty! Will go back very soon. The lunch specials are great! Two people can have a great meal for around 15 bucks!

For once, the Mrs and I disagree on Mongolian Beef. On our never ending quest for the best Mongolian Beef in the Southend, we recently gave North China Garden a chance for the title. She thinks they have won, I still think Indochine is the best. One thing we both agree on is that the appetizers here are some of the best around. We decided to go with the Gourmet Family Dinner A for two with double Mongolian Beef as our entrees. I told you we are serious in our quest. The Family Dinner came with soup, pot stickers, egg rolls, and barbecued pork. The soup was your pretty standard won ton soup, but it was a cold and nasty day outside, so it really hit the spot. The pot stickers and egg rolls were not your garden variety frozen crap. They looked and tasted like homemade. My biggest no no for egg rolls is when they are super greasy and these weren't. The pot stickers were huge plump pillows stuffed with meat. Super tasty. The bbq pork was super tender and well flavored. Now to the main show, the Mongolian Beef. The portions are ridiculous, but with a lot of filler. As I have expressed before, another pet peeve of mine is when there is an equal to, or a more than equal to, ratio of onions to beef. In North China Garden's version, they definitely fall towards the onion side. It is a shame, too, because their beef had an excellent flavor, a little sweet and a little spicy. My wife was a little put off by the texture, but I think they just use a cheaper cut of beef. It wasn't mystery meat, for sure.

I have eaten here a few times over the last few months, while it isn't great it isn't the worst I have had. Here in Tacoma we have a real lack of good international foods. The service is good and the hot tea is very good. The first time I was there I had a green bean dish with a dark savory sauce topped with sesame seeds and that was tasty but the last time I had sesame chicken and it was not very good and it gave me really bad indigestion. I would like to eat there again but just avoid anything fried. In a land of few choices it will have to do to itch my Chinese craving.

Good Chinese food in the Tacoma North End area, plus they deliver. We usually get the Almond Fried Chicken, Fried Rice w/ Barbecue Pork and Sesame Chicken.

  • Laurie H.

I have to say they have the best American Chinese food! I love the orange chicken. They will make it as spicy as you want. The prices are really reasonable and they make it to order. Check it out!

They deliver hot Chinese food to your door, that in itself is a beautiful, beautiful thing. We have had some dishes that were definitely misses but overall, we are very happy with what we order and happy to be in the delivery zone.

For American Chinese food North China Garden is good and they deliver. We know what we like here and generally stick to it- moo shu chicken (ask for extra pancakes) and general Sao's chicken are both good.

Have a Chinese food craving? Look elsewhere! I have been eating at the North China Garden for over three years now having said that.. I USED to get good service and good food needless to say it has gone down hill. Today was the last straw, I have always had delivery service and in the past the service on the phone has been friendly and pleasant but today when I told her I wanted delivery the person on the other end actually sighed then asked me to hold. 5 minutes later she came back on the phone and told me that instead of it being an hour on delivery it would be over an hour since I lived further than 3 miles. When I said that was fine she sighed again. If they don't want to deliver that far (I'm not even sure I have ever lived past their 3 mile range but felt they would know) then they should just say so and quit advertising it! I have always been happy to pay the extra 3 dollars since they deliver which most restaurants in Tacoma don't. Talk about a gold mine business if someone were to open a decent Chinese restaurant and deliver! Now on to the food, the food has become sub-par, greasy and not fully cooked (the scallops were raw) and cheap on portions which is a disappointment considering it used to be pretty good. I wouldn't bother with this Chinese restaurant anymore or at least not until they show some major marked improvement in both service and food quality.

I just had my first (and last) North China Garden experience. Cheese wontons tasted like they had pickle? in them and also really sweet. orange beef was decent flavor-wise at least. The horrifying part came when we opened the lid on the honey walnut shrimp. The shrimp looked like they were coated in frosting or mayonnaise. I ate one or two, but now I wish I hadn't. Seriously grossed out and thinking about purging (a half-hearted joke as I throw up a little in my mouth). I should have trusted the reviews already on here. Yelp - I will never stray from your advice again!

It's funny reviewers that are originally from Tacoma actually think they have a pallet to talk and review food. The food generally offered in Tacoma is terrible this restaurant is not one of them. If you like an authentic szechuan cuisine experience you need to try this restaurant. Also very friendly on the wallet. Hand made dumplings and hand rolled spring rolls. Real orange chicken and spicy Szechuan chicken you cant beat it.

Totally Americanized Chinese. Boring menu. Too much salt. It's nice they deliver, but...not worth it.

I have ordered from there for years, and had always enjoyed it. But, lately this past year or so, the quality was hit or miss for me... But now after my last order, I will never again!! We received an order of bbq pork chow mien ( my favorite ) and when I opened the to go box, the smell alone Alerted me that something was not right! It smelt rancid and was obviously beyond rotten. Because of that, I did not want to even take a chance with the rest of my order. I returned with the order and they of course made it difficult but eventually I received my money back. No more chances on that place.

This is your typical Americanized Chinese food at the better end of the spectrum. I've never eaten in or had delivery but the app here is rather convenient to order online while I'm on the train- no confusion, no talking. My food is ready at the time it's supposed to be ready and it's hot and tasty and consistently the same quality. The staff is friendly.I'm not comparing it to CA or NY or Seattle restaurants. I'm comparing it to what else is around and so far it's the best I can find in north tacoma for Chinese takeout. I'm a satisfied customer. I'm fond of the pork fried rice and the fried dumplings.

  • Karlo M.

So I tried the BBQ pork and it was a huge disappointment. I'm from Southern California where BBQ pork is a hot commodity, but apart from the pork being cold, it was extremely dry. I'm not Chinese but I know good BBQ pork, and this was no where close to being good. If you want mediocre BBQ in the Tacoma region this is the place for you.

I love the egg foo yung! The Mongolian beef is full of flavor and the fried rice dishes are delicious. I also love the delivery service and the food is always piping hot! It is so convenient to have dinner delivered when you don't feel like cooking. My husband and I love ordering in for our quiet nights!

I'm a complete foodie. I love (Americanized) Chinese food. I have two items I always order on my first visit to a Chinese restaurant; Hot & Sour Soup, and Chicken & Broccoli. Both dishes were great. It was the best Hot & Sour Soup I've had since I moved from New Jersey 25 years ago. So full of flavor and vegetables that I inhaled it. The Chicken & Broccoli was great as well, full of fresh veggies and flavor. Great job! The bathrooms are clean and the staff is friendly. But the decor needs a serious makeover from Restaurant Impossible. The waiting chairs are in shoddy shape and some of the decor makes no sense. Also, when walking to the bathrooms you pass an open storage area that should really be closed off. I've eaten here twice so far but I only get take-out. I'm an Uber driver so I'm always in the neighborhood. I love that I can order and pay through the Yelp app and just pick up my food!

This place has greatly improved since the last time I was here. A couple years ago my dad got sick and turned off. I checked yelp for recent reviews and decided to give them another try. I was very impressed tonight and so was my party including my dad!

I'm sad, this is our first, and likely last time eating here. As one always does, we had high hopes... My wife and I ordered sweet & sour chicken, and almond chicken... The food came above room temperature but not hot. The almond chicken was a fried chicken breast sort of cut into strips, but mostly a whole chicken breast on shredded lettuce with CASHEWS! sprinkled on it... ( I ordered almond chicken!) Then it had what tasted like turkey gravy on the side. The sweet & sour chicken was the EXACT same if you add chopped pineapple and onions, the sweet & sour sauce was the only recognizable thing about either dish. To me,its clear we were server up pre-made foods seemingly intended for other dishes. Total price over 20.00... Let's say the one star is for the speedy delivery of the pre-made room temperature strange food... I hope my dogs enjoy it at least... I'm making a sandwich.

I'm not sure what's up with these poor reviews. We love this place! We ordered for delivery one time, and it took a long time and one of the entrees had leaked all over the place. We called them about it, and they took care of it on our next order. Now we order for take out and go pick it up. The food is delicious. Best General Tsao chicken I've ever had, and the Mongolian Beef is solid. This is our go to Chinese place in Tacoma now.

Never tasted the food. First I called to place order from 2.3 miles away and she says there's a $5 delivery charge and $30 minimum for a total for at least $35... Really? Then I order a rediculous amount of food because I can't find anything else open. She says 40 minutes... I find other food with a few minutes, and I call back in under 10 minutes to cancel the order and she YELLS at me and says the driver already left and scolds me, saying that's not how people act, that's wrong to cancel order... I've been ordering take out a long time and this has been the worst phone conversation I've had with a restaurant. No customer service at all. Not worth it. Go somewhere else.

I ordered from here for delivery due to all the great reviews on yelp. Their food is beyond words of praise. Super fantastic is not enough to say what I want to say, and the portions are HUGE!! I had to put some in the freezer cuz I couldn't eat enough fast enough. I don't want a single morsel to go to waste. Their egg rolls are like pastry and I wish I had more. I had to wait awhile for my food to come and they told me that when I ordered. It was more than worth the wait.

North China Garden is now our go-to take-out/delivery Chinese fave. I first started eating here when I worked nearby, and the girls and I would come over for a quick lunch. Now, several years later, we own a home nearby, and mostly do to-go. We have ordered maybe 3 times in the last month. That is a lot for us, but we enjoy the food quality and quantity, along with nothing but EXCELLENT customer service. We usually phone in our order, but I have used the online app they provide as well, and we have always received exactly what we ordered. This is mostly Western-style Chinese. And, I mean, American Pacifc North Western. Which I love, which I grew up on around here, great memories of going with now long passed friends and relatives, especially Gramma. So you know what "type" of Chinese we are discussing here. My Favorites: Sliced BBQ Pork appetizer. Yummy, warm, big roast pork flavor. This is not the stuff in plastic tubes at the store. They actually make it there. Always have to get this. BBQ Pork Fried Rice: Perfect. Lots of chunks of the good stuff, bits of the above BBQ pork, with the right seasoning and texture. Hot and Sour Soup: We always get a quart, and my hubs and I just stand there in our kitchen and gobble it like little pigs before we even open the rest of the food. It's the perfect hot/sour spicy combo (not too spicy), but you cannot put it down till it's gone. Sweet and Sour Pork: Yes, there is a piggie theme happening here. Please don't judge me. If you are still reading, then I will tell you the SS Pork is made with tender pieces of white meat pork, no chewy or fat pieces, with a nice tempura type batter, served along with sliced carrots, onion, green peppers, and fresh pineapple. You get a lot of the pork nuggets, and the red SS sauce from my childhood on the side. Yep. Okay, enough enough. We also like Buddha's Veggies and the stir fried Almond Chicken with Veggies. The only downer for me is I am still seeking that chickeny-cabbagey-celeryy-kinda lemony tasting chow mein like they used to do at the Flower Drum down by the Airport back in the day-day. Someday, I will find my Madeleine. Um, to the dude who canceled his order after calling it in TEN MINUTES before, you are completely wrong duder. Seriously, no one does that. But you did. You broke one of Wil Wheaton's cardinal rules. DBAD

We were told 30min for pickup. We got there a few minutes early and watched a portion of our order sit on the counter and get cold. After 45min - and watching one delivery guy leave and come back and another one leave (15min of seeing the cheese wontons sitting on the counter) we asked how much longer. They said a few minutes then we said we've seen the wontons sitting there. Their response was not we'll get you fresh ones but we can take it off your order. We decided just to get a refund and then they disappeared for 5min before getting us our refund and that was only after we cornered a waitress to get it for us. I have no issues waiting 45min to pickup an order if you tell me that's how long it'll be but I also don't enjoy watching my food sit out and get cold. They could have good food but service wasn't worth waiting on to find out.

Lost a loyal customer today. This place was our go-to for convenient Chinese take out. There's nothing special about the food, actually it's mediocre at most. It is convenient and fast and really the only Chinese take out in the area. However, had the worst interaction while calling to make an order. Whoever picked up the phone at 745pm tonight was rude and just didn't give a damn about customer service. Had a question about the difference between 2 items on the menu and received a rude response. Her contempt and disregard for any customer service was very apparent in her response. If this is how they handle people face to face, I am concerned how things are handled when there is no one looking while they prepare your food. NCG you've lost my patronage.

North China Garden is a good place to stop for a quick meal. The food is alright; not terrible but not amazing. The cusotmer service I've recieved has been pretty average as well (both inside and for delivery). It is located conveniently on 6th Ave so ordering to-go is simple. I'm sure I will visit again due to the convenience and location.

Some people seem to have a bad time with these guys, but my experience great. Ordered take out. They said it would take 40 min, it took an hour. No biggie. Just dont order delivery chinese food 10 minutes before you want to eat. Total was $45.00 including the tip, for mongolian beef, sweet and sour chicken, general t's, chicken chow, and some rice. Fed five of us with plenty of left overs to be had. Food was awesome, and warm. They do not include napkins, chopsticks, or forks. Be prepaired. Customer service was good, and the delivery driver was cool too. Try it out.

I work on 12th and I honestly don't expect "real" Chinese unless I am in china town . This place has by far the best lunch specials in town about $7.50 w/tax and you get meal, egg roll, and choice of soup , as well as choice of white or fried rice . I have had the almond chicken as well as the moo goo gai pan ... Both were delicious very fresh tasting chicken, and both breading and gravy on almond chicken was perfect. The moo goo gai pan was my fav vegetables were good and flavor was amazing sauce . My co worker had sweet and sour chicken and she thought was good as well ...

Have ordered from this place 3 times each experience cascaded from decent to terrible in service and quality in sequential order the first time the chicken dish I ordered was pretty good, I thought "gee finally found a good Chinese delivery for tacoma!" The second time however they brought me the wrong dish completely and it was soggy and kinda gross curry dish the third was just theft and brought my wife's integrity into question... she ordered some vegetable and brown rice dishes the lady said we were .02 miles outside the delivery radius so we would have to buy additional food so my wife ordered some wings for an additional 7 dollars and some spicy mustard sauce and sweet and sour sauce (50cents) each to make the cost... The lady said her total was 35 dollars but when the delivery guy showed up it was 39 dollars so my wife said ok and paid him 43 (tip included) when he left she pulled out the items and realized the wings were not there nor the sweet and sour sauce at this point she's annoyed but not upset she realizes her order was slightly complicated. She calls them back up explaining what she is missing and is promptly told that they put the wings in there. My wife explains that she is looking at the order and that it's not there well ye lady on the phone says her boss put it in there my wife says why would I order something I don't really want so I can have it delivered and then lie about it not showing up (if you recall in this long winded post she only ordered the wings to hit the delivery cost ammount) basically they called us liars and said they wouldn't bring out an order of wings or the sauce that they neglected to pack into the order... I apologize for the long winded nature of this post and the numerous grammatical errors (I'm on my phone ) but this place has just hit our new shit list bottom line if you order from these bandits they will provide shitty customer service call you a liar when they fuck up your order and steal your money when they fail to deliver the full order but charge you for it

Hey I dont know who they people are in the bad review area but we love this place. I used to come here and get quart of soup to go after work. I think it's prob different owners and half the size inside too. But they were always good. Egg foo Young is three huge fluffy pancakes ( your source of protien pick) and almond gravy. They make thier own gravy oh soo good. Today for lunch Mongolian beef for both of us and also Delisch. That sweet but spicey beef we crave over the styrofoam noodles ha ha. This is our to go to joint since we live just north from here!

OKAY guys, I'll come back... YES they have some on and off customer service. I can tell everyone working is TRYING. Before I felt like the people working hated their job so I felt it! It was super uncomfortable to eat around hence why I resorted to delivery. I am happy to dine there once again, thanks Alicia! (-don't worry so much!) Also, it's your everyday Chinese-american food. Nothing bad about that! I recommend ginger beef and Orange chicken and the veggie rolls. My better half enjoys the hot and sour soup and the Mongolian beef. Only con I can think of is the ABSOLUTELY TINY RICE portions you give out. One rice scoop is NOT enough for an entree plate guys, come on!

Fair food, but not worth a return visit. We ordered 4 meals family style for 12.75 per person. We each choose an entree (Mongolian beef, curry chicken, cashew chicken and sweet & sour pork). Then the family style adds soup, 1 egg roll, 1 piece of BBQ pork & one pot sticker per person. Food was on the greasy, salty side...but edible. Smaller portions than our typical place. We had to request a refill of tea (even with the lid open) & they don't refill rice (even when 1/2 the main dishes remain). At the end of the meal the server brought our bill & fortune cookies and then asked if we wanted to try their ice cream. Three of us said yes, each selecting a diff flavor (chocolate, strawberry something & a honey walnut). She then took the bill back, so I thought "Oh okay it will cost a few bucks." Actually it was $4.50 for a small cup serving. The honey walnut was indelible (thankfully she didn't charge me for it). If you do decide to eat here, I don't recommend the family style option. Just buy the cashew for 9.50, the add ons are NOT worth the additional $3.25. My advice go elsewhere. Food is fair at best & prices high for the quality. I found the servers fine (wish she would have clarified the cost of the ice cream). I don't hold the no additional rice against her, we could have asked (but it felt like the owners are cheap).

Pretty good and consistent and can you say DELIVERY? Try the Sesame shrimp, lemon chicken, and veggie fried rice. We've been ordering from these guys for years. I've never actually set foot in the restaurant, so I can't say what that's like, don't care. They had me at delivery. Sometimes you need other options besides pizza.

Reasonably priced good Chinese food. Egg flower soup has great flavor. Ordered the Orange chicken which was very fresh and hot, Hunan bean curd, which was excellent and the Kung pao shrimp. All were good! The customer service was great and the food doesn't disappoint if you're looking for some basic Chinese food. I will return when passing thru Tacoma.

Tried the General Tsao's, Mongolian Beef, and House Fried Rice. All tasted very good, portions were great and prices were pretty darned reasonable. Only thing I didn't like was the food was cold by the time it got to the table, so it kind of ruined the experience. Parking is not the easiest

I thought it was very tasty. The honey walnut shrimp is a dish I find hard to get right and this place got it right. Not bad on price, the. Place is a little frumpy but I can forgive that since our server was attentive. There were 8 of us dining also.

Price - Seemed high for Chinese takeout style food. Entrees about $8-10, sides are additional. The "family meal" is about $13 and includes some small sides. Portions - More than you could reasonably eat in one sitting, which I guess most people expect from a this kind of restaurant, and they don't make a fuss about to-go boxes after a meal. Service - Nothing good or bad to say here in my limited experience. Food - None of the pork dishes we had did we consider very good. Just tastes like unseasoned pork which wouldn't be terrible if the sweet/sour sauce could be a little heavier to pick up that slack. Beef was really great. Very tender, sauce was good, if a bit salty. Sides are fairly underwhelming. Rice in the fried rice was overcooked (mushy). The rice was very heavy on the meat though which was nice, most places you end up fighting over the 2 tiny meat scraps in the rice. All the dishes seemed a little on the greasy side, which most of us would expect for Chinese takeout, but this was more than usual and a bit off-putting. Soups were just fine. Summary - If I had friends that wanted to meet there I'd join them, but I don't know that I'll be seeking this place out again on my own. I'm not saying it's a terrible place, it's just this isn't *my* style of Chinese takeout. I never expect Chinese takeout to be a mind-blowing culinary experience, but even so this kind of missed the mark for me. Next time I'm craving a guilty takeout-style dinner pleasure I'll hit up one of my go-to's.

Every so often we order for lunch. I've been impressed and happy with the price of the lunch menu although the soup that came with it was blah.

Decent food, decent prices. In a nice area with variety of restaurants and shops...for a nice walk before or after meal. Had the family dinner with orange chicken and general tsao chicken...was tasty. Friendly staff. Would return.

Pretty good, defiantly american chinese not authentic, but sometimes that's what I want. Both my husband and I like the orange beef and chicken chow mein. The restaurant is a little pricy but good.

Dont order for delivery! The website said 60 to 90 minutes. I called 2 hrs later and she said 5 more minutes. ... 2 and half hours later snd it was cold!

I absolutely enjoy this place. It's not a traditional Chinese restaurant, a bit Americanized, so remember to go in with that mindset! Their proportions are huge and we somehow always have to take a doggie bag with us home. The staff is hit or miss because sometimes we get a certain person that's a bit rude or acts like we are inconveniencing her by being there. But most of the time it's a great environment run by a family. My husband even left his wallet there one night and they kept it for us and not a dollar was missing! So grateful for that!

Terrible. Delivery minimum is $30, so we ordered mongolian beef, orange chicken, and chow mein. Took OVER an hour to get. Everything in the bag was soaked with sauce. There were NO utensils to eat with, no chopsticks, no forks. We were missing an order of rice (but it wasn't missing on the receipt, of course) Food was AWFUL. Mongolian beef had literally 6 or 7 pieces of meat in the whole BOX of food. All vegetables. Liquid watery "sauce" that spilled everywhere. Was more like a broth than anything. Meat was fatty and limp; completely disappointing. Orange chicken was a joke. Gigantic pieces of chicken, but the box was filled with actual orange peels (wtf? why?? These aren't edible!!) and the chicken was horrendous. Not crispy at all, just fatty blobs of soft, chewy, gristly, fat meat caked in flour batter. Disgusting. The chow mein was rubbery and flavorless; bland starch and nothing else. This hardly even qualifies as food. The most palatable thing in our order was the rice, and even the sweet and sour sauce (also leaked all over the bag) was clumping and tasteless. This place is a joke. We seriously went up the street to McDonald's because we were starving after waiting an hour, and even with grumbling stomachs, this "food" wasn't even edible. We're calling to request a refund, or else our pets are going to have one hell of a buffet. Save your money, and go to Panda Express. Even drive through Asian fast food is better than this garbage.

A friend and I went here for lunch, and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. They didn't have curried beef on the lunch menu however they actually made it for me just because I asked for it. The curry was very flavorful with just the right amount of curry and spices blended together. The serving size was just right and presentation lovely. Overall a delightful experience.

Had dinner here last night called in order for pick up and she was very rude on the phone food was good but the pot stickers were absolutely disgusting and the amount of rice you get with a family dinner is a joke

I have no beef with North China Garden. In fact, I love it because it's the only place I've found in Tacoma where I can get good 'ole American Chinese food. Everything else is teriyaki, it seems. (I could be wrong; but I'm a North Ender and my scope is limited). I guess I'm not in Kansas anymore . . .

I can't say how good the food was! We have had some Chinese lately that has been a bit to be desired to say the least!!! Everything we ordered was great! We had almond chicken and general Taos chicken. Great house fried rice! The service was good too! The waitress was sweet and responsive! We will be back.

If you're searching for authentic foodie worthy Chinese cuisine, then you'll probably be disappointed. But if you just want that NY style Americanized Chinese food that's heavy on the salt and rich sauces- this is the best that Tacoma has to offer. The Sesame beef is crispy, savory, and exactly what I want in that dish. They'll give you an option of spiciness (1-5). Sometimes the 5 is perfect, sometimes it's not so spicy. No worries- they've got the chili garlic sauce right on the table. This is one of our favorite family friendly Friday night spots. I hear there are problems with delivery, but I've never ordered Chinese delivery without problems.

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! I called in for a delivery 1. Because I lived .02 out of the delivery radius I had to pay 5 bucks delivery (not a problem) and $30 minimum for food. 2.They show up my bill was $39 I paid, went to check my food to find that THINGS were missing.. gave them a call in which I was in a nice mood. Whoever the woman was to answer the phone communicated with someone else exactly what I was missing and they insisted that they had packed those items in the bag (wings, extra sauce and rice) I tell them that I don't have it and they repeat that they packed it in the bag. I tell them again that I don't have it and name what I do have and they argue (rudely) that it was sent. At this point they are calling me a liar. I asked if I could have a refund or if they could send the food that I was missing out to me and they told me NO! Out of frustration I put my husband on the phone to see if he could reason with them but they would not budge. Ultimately I paid $39 plus tip for $15 or less worth of food and I wasn't compensated but instead left unsatisfied. I WILL NEVER ORDER FROM HERE AGAIN AND I WILL TELL EVERYONE THAT I KNOW NOT TO WASTE THEIR TIME OR MONEY WITH RUDE PEOPLE WHO HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT TAKES TO STRIVE IN THE INDUSTRY.

Pretty good! I liked the sesame chicken. It was good chunks of quality meat and it was crispy too! You can get it delivered as well, which is awesome especially when no one wants to get up and drive for food :) the kids devoured it in minutes!

We live in the area and decided to give this place a try. The restaurant was fairly empty, but the waitress was very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. We had the family special with General Tsao chicken and Kung Pao shrimp as our entrees. They were very good. We had huge chunks of chicken, but it was delicious. Our food came out in a timely manner, and we are very satisfied with our experience.

Standard American style Chinese food. Not great but not bad, and open late for delivery so just know what you're getting in to and you won't be disappointed. The dumplings had a ton of dough but were still tasty. Barbeque pork was pretty bland and the only thing I ordered that I didn't end up eating. Was a bit annoyed that I didn't get chopsticks with my order, though.

Extremely large portions, that's my biggest enjoyment. Tastes good, very affordable (12$ with delivery), and they absolutely stuffed the box with food, and then gave me rice (More than usual.) Had to share with my roommate.

Our food arrived 2 hours later after we ordered it. Food was cold, soggy, and not worth the wait at all. We spent $40 because of the $30 minimum for delivery, who does that anymore, don't waste your time and money. Never again.

I used the Yelp app to order delivery from here the other night. It was easy and hassle free, I suppose I might use it again. The food arrived quickly, the delivery guy was nice and the food was hot. I got the two entree meal with wonton soup and two spring rolls (good), dumplings (meh) and BBQ pork (fine). Had General Tso's chicken which was good, big pieces of chicken and also had the orange chicken which was good and not over cooked like I've usually had. I can't say if their claim to have the best orange chicken is legit or not because I don't really like it in general. Family said it was good but didn't express any strong feelings. The pork fried rice was good. I did order extra hot mustard and it is a little ketchup cup type thing of hot mustard and not the hot mustard packets if that matters to anyone....

We hadn't been here in a few years because we had found the food & service to be marginal and the decor oppressive. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Everything we had was delicious. Our waitress was helpful, friendly and was doing the work of at least two people and pulling it off rather well. As anyone from Tacoma knows, Chinese food (the well-executed comfort variety) is hard to come by. Everything we had was served hot, looked & tasted fantastic. We had the family dinner for two (12.99 each) which included soup, appetizers, and two entrees. Two of us ate and brought a lot of food home with us for well under $40. Now that they've improved the furniture and added some booths, my only complaint about the dining room is the lighting. If they threw some candles on the tables and dimmed the lights a bit they could become as popular as any of the other 6th Ave restaurants.

They should serve the Sesame Beef in the dark, because as presented it looks like a plate of turds. Once you develop the intestinal fortitude to actually place some in your mouth however it's a flavor explosion. I seem to enjoy this restaurant more when I order to-go, as even by Chinese restaurant standards this dining room is shabby.

The Tacoma News Tribune said they had good dumplings so we gave them a try. The dumplings were OK for me. Too much dough for my wife. They were obviously handmade (a plus) with lots of pork filling. They only offered soy sauce for dipping. I would have liked some black vinegar and maybe some ginger. I had moo shoo pork. The pancakes were not hand made there (my wife makes her own). They were cold as was the sauce. I would have wished they were at least room temperature. One of the staff members brought in some food from another restaurant and ate it at a nearby table. This is just mediocre Americanized Chinese food. We were disappointed as we had driven 40 plus miles to get to it. Oh yeah, hair in the food.

We're updating our review because of multiple poor experiences and we've reached the final straw. An hour and a half after ordering the driver shows up without adequate change, they only carry $20 for change so I guess thats important to tell the customers, right? Well they'll tell you when they're at your door. So he leaves to get change, comes back and the food is disheveled to say the least. Buyer beware! Can't come back after this one.

The absolute worse chinese food I've ever had. I took my family in celebration of chinese new year. First off my daughter was so excited to get the seafood in a birds nest (fried noodles), it came in a flour taco salad bowl and puddle of thickened water. Everything lacked in flavor. The shrimp in lobster sauce was slimy and very unappetizing. Food was luke warm. The Hunan Spicy Bean Curd at spice level 3 had no heat at all- ask the four year old. The bathroom was filthy. We spent $50 and went home hungry-it was sooo GROSS!

We decided to try this place because it's close and we were looking for some decent Chinese food. We went in and decided to get the food to-go because it was 6:30pm and the place was deserted. They were thrown off that we went in to order to go and then made us feel uncomfortable as we sat and waited for the food. Once it was ready, about 15 minutes later, the order was wrong. It wasn't a huge problem, just a little mix up with the rice, but she made a HUGE deal about fixing it (see other reviews about the sighing). I don't think they should be more upset about fixing our order than we were that it was wrong with just 3 items. I tried the orange chicken, the standard by which I sample all places before getting more adventurous, and it was too sweet for my taste. The chicken was a little tough. My husband tried the beef and broccoli and it was okay. We also tried the fried rice which was good, but nothing remarkable. They do have good lunch specials and they deliver. Bottom line: We go to Safeway to get our Chinese food.

I could begin by saying that this chinese food is Americanized. Uh, yeah, welcome to Tacoma? The fact that these guys have delivery with no extra charge for orders over 15 dollars is in itself worth 3 stars, and frankly, I dig the food. It's true that most of it is fried, and it's very possible that it is purchased frozen and loaded with salt. Ummm, it's American chinese food... Anyways, the only thing on their menu I don't like is the egg rolls. Disappointing because I love eggrolls, but their general tso is good, their sesame chicken is good, the coral shrimp is good, and to top it off... if you ask for a 5, you're getting a 5. Can't remember the last time I ate at a chinese food place that trusted a white boy to order spicy food. When you don't want pizza and you're drunk off your bum, this is it.

The worst chinese food I have ever had in my life! So disguting. The sweet n sour sauce tasted like some sugary cherry flavored syrup and the noodles were dripping with grease. You would think they couldnt go wrong with the pot stickers but they couldnt even get that right. We couldnt even finish it just threw it out. Started feeling sick right away and woke up feeling even worse! Guessing it was full of MSG. I do not recommend this place to anyone.

So just called and placed and order for delivery. ..I get the same lady who has answered in the past. I let her know that I would like to place and order to go...and hear a DEEP SIGH in the phone..then "what you want?"...really.....was that necessary?? I hate deep sighs in the phone...don't act so put-out by someone ordering what you service and offer. Reason for 2 stars.... - get someone more pleasant to answer your phones and appreciate the business you get. When I told my husband about the DEEP SIGH he asked "I thought you weren't going to order from them any more?" This because of my last experience with the same rude lady on the phone. My response "They are the only ones that deliver." Yes I am merely ordering your food because you deliver. I will now go on for another few months until I have lost the disappointing feelings I have towards the lack of pleasantry when someone answers your phone only to place another order and be reminded of why I said I would never order from NCG again. If another place popped up and delivered I guarantee I would not be ordering from NCG again.

Its certainly not authentic Chinese more American-Chinese but the food is decent and certainly filling with leftovers for your buck. I also order the moo shoo chicken and gyoza for an appetizer. I do absolutely love it. The service is fine but can get a bit slow once more people start coming I'm as they seem to be understaffed but maybe that is just me. Either way I will return sometime in the future again.

Ordered the Spicy Hunan bean curd (tofu) again and this time it was much less greasy. Good work, NCG!

There's better Chinese food and service in Tacoma. We went a couple times, and the meals were greasy, and it seems very understaffed. I also ordered a vegetarian meal and found pieces of meat in it. If you're looking for variety, I recommend East West Cafe in Proctor. If you're on a budget Safeway Express is better as well.

As other yelpers have noted in their reviews - when is Tacoma going to get a decent Chinese place? And may I add to that request - could we please get some dim sum? But I digress... North China Garden is really bad Amercian Chinese food. I love authentic first and foremost - but there is a place in my heart for well done 50's style American Chinese. This is not it. I have never seen so much frozen carrot & pea mix thrown into such a variety of dishes...really. The lack of difference between various dishes almost becomes a game of culinary Hocus Focus. We live close to NCG, so we tried it several times hoping to have a solid go-to Chinese fix. Again, this is not it. Seriously, do not bother. If you're right there and hungry, run across the street to MSM Deli for a sandwich. Your taste buds will thank you.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
