First time trying this place. Got there around 11:30 and were seated 10-15 min later. The wait staff is nice and efficient. We ordered coffee, The Desperado omelette and I got the chicken fried steak and eggs. Portions are huge! My husband enjoyed his omelette. I had to add salt to the gravy, the home fries and eggs. No biggie, better to have something under seasoned than overly salty. I could not finish my meal, so I ended up taking the steak, biscuit (which is delicious by the way) and potatoes home. Everything in the menu looks good and freshly made. Tip: The waitress told us all the items in their menu are available any time so if you want breakfast for dinner or a turkey dinner for breakfast it can be done :)

Help I'm trapped in a barn full of babies! Seated quickly - then it took about 10 min before we had coffee or water and 20 min before our order was in... Took about 15 min from last bite to the check. The convo while waiting for the check went like this: Him: thoughts? Her: edible Him: returning? Her: not if there's an ihop open. Don't get the corned beef hash unless you love straight out of the can - it'd be ok if it wasn't 10 bucks. The stacked hash browns were a'ight and had more bacon than my boyfriends bacon omelette which we decided should have had a description for bacos vs bacon. Not bad - it's akin to any other regular ihop ive been to but overpriced. And the baby screeching required me to down more coffee than I wanted...

Really good comfort food, great prices and friendly service. Awesome Chicken Fried Steak. If I lived here I would eat there at least once a week...I'd be as fat as a cow but would love every bite. Mark from San Diego

Always friendly and attentive wait staff when you first walk in! The portion sizes are huge so you could always share with someone and still get exactly what you need! Breakfast is always delightful lunch is always delicious and the dinner menu is very generous! pretty much anything you get here on the menu will serve your appetite Wow! Customer service is great, price is right, and there's always parking but this place is always busy! A local favorite for sure!

Good home food cooking. Did not really try to judge this place because it was too go and just grab typical breakfast food.

  • Alicia W.

Delicious country fried steak and pancakes! One of my new favorite places to grab breakfast. Service can be a bit slow sometimes but the food makes up for it.

I have never had a bad meal here. We started coming here for a year now and everything is always wonderful. The food is delicious and huge portions. The waitresses are very friendly and we even had a chance to meet Kevin (an owner) who is super nice and very concerned for customers experiences. He never fails to come and talk to us when we are there. I recommend this place to everyone. You have to try the homemade bread and biscuits plus the cinnamon rolls are terrific.

So my husband and I went here for dinner and it was amazing!!! I had the Rueben and he had the patty melt...we are regulars at the Ram brewery and restaurant and all I can say is the Homestead's Rueben topped the Rams hands down!!!! It was incredible and soooo filling. It was delicious. And the prices are so fair!!! And the portions OMG!!! Totally worth going to. I also recommend their cinnamon rolls :) delicious

Great breakfast joint. The server was VERY friendly and the food was as advertised. Good ol' fashioned home style cooking!

Ok so we got to Tacoma last November. We have read some reviews and tried some places that have become regular haunts over the past year. I want to say that I am kicking myself for not having been here until now . I have sat and complained about not having a Cracker Barrel here in the area and now let me say this place more than fills that void in my diet. We just came from NC and let me say this place can keep up with the best family good home cooking place in the south. I am an absolute fan!!! Finally gonna get my home cooking without having to do it myself . The chicken fried steak was extremely good and breaded just right - not too thick , and not too thin. The made potatoes were real actual potatoes that appeared to be hand mashed. The country gravy was rich without being overly so . The roll was delicious and had a wonderful texture with s hint of sourdough . The chicken soup was very good although I did add some pepper s little lime might have been nice but overall it was very good and not overly salted like some places do. The husband had the Wagonwheel sandwich and is sitting here saying he needs a nap and is not thinking about anything for dinner . The prices are very reasonable . The food I saw delivered to other tables looked delicious and smelled delicious . The service was friendly and fast our servers name was Kim today ask for her section she is fantastic. I highly recommend this place and you will not see me at Denny's again . I feel like a total idiot for not trying this place sooner . ENJOY !!!

Good food decent service. If you order the biscuits and gravy ask for the gravy on the side. Mine came amd was like a bowl of gravy with a biscuit buried under it all def 3 times the amount of gravy I needed lol was tasty just too much.

I really appreciate the homey feel inside of Homestead, even though there are usually at least 10 other tables with people at them whenever I go. I also appreciate a business that has a bakery onsite where they make their own cinnamon rolls. If you want to see an impressive feat, bring someone who can eat a lot, and have them order the Wagon Wheel. I won't say more, but trust me, it's worth the price of admission.

This is my absolute favorite breakfast spot! Nobody else can complete with the homestead. =)

  • Yasmin M.

The best breakfast joint in town. My mom and I have been coming here for at least 20 years. They did hit a rough patch and food wasn't that great, but the last few times I've been it's amazing! They have THE BEST gravy and biscuits in Tacoma. Hands down! I recently tried a burger there. WOW! YUM!! The waitresses are super sweet, and the food is worth the wait!

This place is located on AUTO ROW on S Tacoma Way. Looks like an old farmhouse. I have seen their ads forever so decided one day to take the plunge. Typical diner appearance. Tables were sticky with syrup. Ordered the chicken and waffles, french toast and omelette. Food took awhile so we assumed it would be freshly cooked. Chicken and waffles arrived and appeared appeitixing. One bite and OMG- Chicekn was dry and partially frozen on the inside. The waffle was obviously previously frozen as well. BIG DISSAPOINTMENT. Will not return

This place is good. When asked for coffee, they bring you a pot of it to pour yourself so you don't have to keep asking for waiting. The food is yummy, especially the biscuits and their gravy is not bad either :) I'm a big gravy fan and I would say it's 3.5 /5. I'm not sure if it's house made so that's what I'm giving it. The chicken fried steak is big and delicious but not too big. My wife and I like to share and it fills us up! The staff there are all nice so far, haven't run into anyone that wasn't. One specifically is pretty cool, that we want to be her friend lol.

My favorite breakfast place now in Tacoma. Every time we go there, it's amazing. And no one I've brought here has been disappointed. Blessings upon this place.

I'd say the eggs Benedict was on point and flavored full and I love the chicken fried steak alongside with biscuits and gravy.

  • Jolene D.

They take forever to serve you but it's great food and great atmosphere. Country style ... Rural feel in Tacoma. Recommend the biscuits and gravy, corned beef and eggs if that's your thing. Its basically Shari's with careful effort to make sure the food is quality tasting. They got my order wrong but it's forgivable... Only restaurant like this in the area. Nice wooden booths for privacy. Too many items on their menu. Took them 45 minutes to bring out our food at least... And then gave us our check 10 minutes into eating... Never asked if we wanted more coffee and barely gave us gravy.

Breakfast is one of my favorite meals of the day. I would eat breakfast for every meal if I could convince my wife. We love going to little dinners and greasy spoon breakfast places. The plus about this place is that it is really good food. I am a man that appreciates a simple breakfast. So I get the eggs, sausage, potatoes, biscuit, and a black coffee. I get the same thing every time. Its amazing. We have a handful of places we like to eat. I think this is my favorite place to eat often for the really good simple food, but I think sunbreak in auburn beats it by a hair because of the banana bread. I still think this place is a bit better then silverspoon though. I love silver spoon just a little too big of servings. Either way its a good $25 breakfast for 2 people.

  • Ryan J.

Service was great. Very speedy, and curteous. The food was alright. We had the wagon wheel, biscuits and gravy, and the mess. The wagon wheel was interesting, and tasted good. The biscuits and gravy are subpar on flavor. The mess was a bit greasy. Probably not worth the above average price for the food, but the service is for sure. The looks of the place where interesting. Old school barn refabed into a country style diner. All and all this is a good place and that shows through how busy it is.

  • Kaihyia F.

Ate at the Homestead this morning. Server was very abrupt and took over 45 mins to get our food. Once we got it, it was cold and the eggs were under cooked. Spoke to the manager and they took 5 bucks off my 50 dollar bill. I basically paid 45 dollars for food poisoning and diarrhea. Thanks homestead. If I could give you a negative star I would. Horrible customer service.

  • JoDee F.

Super surprised. I ordered the french dip and my daughter ordered a bacon cheese burger. Soooo good. Roast beef is homemade not the processed crap. Jo Jo's were perfect. Friendly service. Definitely will be back.

Went here for brunch with my family. It gets pretty crowded on Saturday mornings so prepare to wait at least 20-30 minutes for a table. They do have a lot of seats in the waiting area which I liked because I hate having to stand up for 20 minutes while waiting for a table to clear. Waitress was very friendly, attentive. Give her 5 stars for her service. The food is average. I had the biscuits and gravy. They weren't anything to write home about. I've had a lot better at other establishments. My two year old had the "pigs in a blanket" and she enjoyed her meal. She had fun coloring Winnie the Pooh while waiting for her food. I like restaurants that give the children something to do while they wait for the food. The husband ordered the Ranger burger with JoJos and he said his meal was about average. We will come back one day and order off the dinner menu. Interested in trying the chicken fried steak. For a home style, country meal this place is pretty good. With a very country feel..

  • Maria B.

I came here recently with my family for the first time in 23 years. It was even better than I remembered it as a kid. The portions were pretty big, and the quality didn't skimp either. I found the prices to be reasonable as well. Oh, and if you're going for that cinnamon roll, I suggest you split it! My mom and I killed one between us. Hey, we were about to spend an afternoon walking around Northwest Trek, so it was good fuel! The atmosphere borders somewhere between country kitsch and...well, no, it's all country kitsch. Think of it like a Cracker Barrel, but less corporate, and without front area full of country tchotchkes. (Not that I have a problem with Cracker Barrel.)

Best food, large portions, and always worth the drive! I bring all my out of town guests here!

Finally checked this place out after driving by countless times. I had the SOS with a side of bacon. It was delicious but I wish it came with more gravy. Mmmmmm!

My mother wanted to take me out for my b-day so we picked Homestead. We were seated right away. Kim was our waitress she was professional and friendly. Our food was very good my Mother had the pot roast I had the chicken fried steak. Mom said the next time she has the whole family out it will be here. That would be anywhere from 15 to 25 of us. If we all showed up that would be a good test on the Homestead. My Mom said the price was very reasonable. I would recommend the Homestead Restaurant to a friend or anyone looking for a great home cooked meal. I hope you get Kim when you go there !

  • Ruben L.

I've only had the option of taking the meal to go, so I cannot speak on behalf of the waiting staff. However, the hostess who took my order was very courteous and professional. Not to mention his delicious the food is: everything is made fresh, the meals are extremely filling, and the pies are to die for. I would recommend this place over IHOP, or Denny's any day.

    (4)
  • Heather R.

The food here is great, huge portions and relatively fast. Prices on the other hand do it seem to match the clientele. This is lakewood- if you've ever watched Cops you've probably heard of it- and you want to charge 9 dollars for 6 mozzarella sticks! What are you putting in those things? I mean seriously I can buy string cheese for 10 cents a piece, add 5 cents for breading and what you're charging me $1.35 for the labor of frying each stick??

  • Allie S.

My boyfriend and his mom swore this place was awesome. And they were right! I had the hankering for pancakes and sausage. The pancakes were big and perfect. And the sausage was real! :) the ambience is homey and comfy. I really liked it there. I suggest it for any meal of the day!

    (5)
  • Alicia P.

Went there Sunday morning for breakfast. Overall a good place to eat and waitress was nice and alert. Only issue was ham in omelette was over cooked and sausage gravy has very little flavor. But the rest of food was delicious.

  • Patricia G.

Ate breakfast there this morning and I have to say the portions are huge. Husband had the chicken fried steak and I had the biscuits and gravy. The food was great as well as the service. We will be returning soon!

  • Edward R.

Breakfast food fantastic, cinnamon rolls to die for. Service and speed was excellent for a large group. Other reviews question the lunch and dinner food but breakfast was great. On the edge of a rough part of town so breakfast may be best bet.

  • Brad B.

First time we came here it was amazing service is great. Been here at least 7 times. The goal is to try something different every time we come here, so Chipotle chicken burger is top of my list for lunch. Breakfast menu wow chicken fried steak smothered in gravy awesome. Portions are large I can eat but I always leave with carry out. Need to try if you like dessert homemade pies

    (5)
  • Heather H.

The stew was horrible and the croutons on the salad was just weird flavored. The kids had breakfast and everything on their plates tasted great. The apple pie was good. If you go there, I would recommend breakfast and pie and avoid the dinner menu. The kitchen was quite slow and it took a while to get food.

Came for my birthday breakfast. First time here, but definitely not the last! The cinnamon roll French toast was so delicious and SUPER HUGE! Great portions, I couldn't even finish my breakfast. Great prices and we even splurged a little. And our waitress was amazing, attentive and sent me home with a giant chocolate chip cookie!

  • Janet M.

Tried this restaurant based on the numerous positive reviews. Unfortunately our experience was anything but positive. We ordered hot turkey sandwiches. A pleasant waitress delivered them within 15 minutes. Thick slabs of white meat and stringy clumps of dark meat were set on top of thick slices of chewy bread next to a mound of bland mashed potatoes of questionable texture. Everything was doused in a puddle of poorly seasoned gravy. We expressed our dissatisfaction to our waitress. She apologized profusely but did not offer to bring us another meal or send the manager. This meal was so unappetizing that we will not be returning. Ever.

Breakfast was delicious and my service given was very good as well. Nice hometown dining and appears like a down home family place. Do yourself a favor and order their biscuits instead of toast. Out of this world! I'll definitely be back.

While still on a hunt for turkey dinner, and even though we had turkey dinner at Gobble in Woodinville the night before, still with a hankering for the big bird, stopped here when driving by assuming by the name that they would offer a turkey dinner... and that they did. It was a HUGE dinner, both white and dark meat piled high, with a ton of mashed potatoes and stuffing, plus cranberry sauce, and all of this smothered in turkey gravy. Bring your appetite because dinner includes a slice of pie! Wait staff is very attentive, ambiance is country living and has stood the test of time. I bet breakfast is good here. Give it a try, it's been around a long time and it's obvious why. Oh, and if you think you are up to it. they have ginormous cinnamon rolls... and they make french toast out these things!

  • Lars W.

After getting skipped over by multiple groups that came in after we did, we were seated after 25 minutes (15 minutes longer than we were told.). Histess had a very bad attitude towards me when i asked her about it. Our table smelled strongly of bleach, likely from sanitation solution with way too much bleach. After we ordered, I noticed rat droppings and we left before we even got our food. Forget that place and their fans menu board, I'm out. Never going back there again. Employees had a bad attitude and rodent droppings are not attractive. I guess I will never know what the food tasted like, those cinnamon rolls looked so good, oh well.

The biscuits and gravy is good. Love that the biscuits are fresh and fluffy homemade. The service was good.

  • Aaron B.

This is the place you'll come when you first get in town and you'll be convinced it's better than going to Denny's. Then after trying some of the real brunch places on the area, the very memory of the place gets worse and worse. Fake atmosphere, tiring wait staff, and the food doesn't taste that great.

    (2)
  • Austin W.

The place was good some things are probably better then others i had the cinnamon roll french toast and I thought it would have been like the cookie Jar in Fairbanks Alaska. In the cookie jar what i like is something similar to the cinnamon roll french toast. It was still pretty good though

  • Joann S.

My husband and I went here for an early dinner, first time. No wait, good service, very good food, large portions, very good prices. Beats a lot of places. The atmosphere is neat, rustic country feel, loots of rough hewn wood, Building exterior is a red barn. We both had the meatloaf, which was great. Already looking forward to going back.

  • John R.

I love this diner. The food is prepared freshly just like at your Mom's house. The potions are huge and so tasty! This is my favorite casual diner in Tacoma

  • Alexis W.

It appears there are a ton of new staff and the restaurant is under new management. We used to love coming here, but for the first time ever, there was a wait to be seated, then we waited another 30-40 to get our food, and there was a mistake in the kitchen, as food that I did not order or want appeared in my meal. Our waitress was nice and took a few dollars off our tab, I just miss the way this place used to be, referring back to about a year ago. :/ kinda bummed!

Fun place to visit with kids for BREAKFAST. I've only ever eaten Breakfast here-- both times before 9 AM. 5-stars primarily because of the friendly staff and because there was NO GREASE with any of our meals. Wait staff is great with our two young kids. After hearing that I wanted a cinnamon roll at my visit today, the server recommended the "wagon wheel" which is the cinnamon roll sliced across and served with eggs, cheese, bacon, ham, and hash-browns served like a large sandwich (not on the regular menu- it was on the reader board at the entrance). I have to say, the wagon wheel is "well balanced"!! It was fantastic-- yes it's a lot of calories, but it was NOT DRIPPING IN GEASE as I had expected and it had the perfect ratio of salty-sweet taste. The food was delivered quickly, and neatly. The woman who was the "busser" and clean-up person chatted-up my wife and had a very pleasant, thought-provoking conversation-- how often do you get that at a restaurant? Our server knew the menu perfectly. The restrooms are NOT modern, but we found them very clean. After reading other low-rated reviews, I'm guessing that the staff get tired toward the end of the day and/or end of their shifts. None of the staff looks "young" to me which appears to mean that the staff have worked there a long time, but they also may get fatigued toward the end of the day.... We will return for breakfast in the future.

I was hit hard with a chicken 'n waffles craving. I've seen this place show adverts that they have said dish. Luckily it was a day off from work, so I decided to stop in. Much to my surprise I saw they offered mimosas- sign me up please! Service was quick and my chicken plate showed a healthy portion of fried chicken. The waffle wasn't too shabby either. Butter and warm syrup for my waffle. Tobasco for my chicken. The skin was a perfect crispness, the meat was juicy and not bone dry. I like my chicken with a bit more crunch on the outside but the flavour made up for all of that. One thing I wished they had: A better pie selection. Maybe the boring old: Cherry, apple and pecan. I would have loved to order a slice of pie, but wasn't feeling the crème pies they offered. I might visit again when my husband is with me. This is the style of cooking he was raised on.

We just love this place. They give huge portions, great service and a a vibe in there that is mellow and quiet.

Not nearly what it used to be. The soup smelt like a can, and the food was bland... Server was very friendly though! Unfortunately we won't be returning

This restaurant is like the fresh eggs they use. You are first hesitant to crack in and check it out. But after that, there are absolutely no regrets. Nice service, good food, and warm family environment!

  • Kaci H.

(Redbarn) as we call it. Love it here! We only eat the breakfast and it is always delicious. Its very quaint and cozy with a country theme. Omelettes and pancakes are very yummy, their biscuits and sausage gravey are the best!

  • Joshua O.

Went there at about 10 am. Service was good, friendly, checked on us regularly. Food was amazing, but the eggs Benedict my fiance got had too much hollandaise sauce on it so it was a soggy delicious mess. Other than that a pretty authentic American breakfast joint!

    (3)
  • Nikki M.

Service was good, place has an old southern feel to it. Which I appreciated but the breakfast was completely satisfying. The omelet that I ordered was stuffed well but I could get over the greasy slimy has browns! I prefer my hash to be crispy and well seasoned but this taste like frozen potatoes that had been thawed and then thrown on the skillet for 3 minutes. Gross! 2/5

  • Jennifer J.

My husband and our two kids had breakfast here. We had a amazing waitress which I wish I would have got her name but did not. Food was good. Steak had little flavor but was Cooked perfectly as ordered. All other food was good. Not a fan of the coffee.

  • Cindy H.

I tired to give this place another chance but i was so disappointed again. I came in for breakfast and ordered eggs Benedict. The presentation was appealing but the taste of the food was mediocre. It wasn't exactly a wow factor to my taste buds. My plate came with a side of fruits and let me tell you out of all the worst experiences this is by far the worst. I would never expect the side of fruits to be worst the the entree itself because this is just simply fruits in a bowl. My strawberries were molded and dried up. How the hell and how dare the server serve me molded food. That is disgusting and unappetizing. I tried to get the servers attention but no one was around. So with my lost appetite, I just sat there and not touch my eggs Benedict. After almost ten minutes I waved the server over and told her my fruits are molded. She goes to the back and brings out the same bowl of fruits and instead of the strawberries, they are replaced with more grapes. Really!!?? Are you kidding me. You couldn't even give me a new bowl of fruit. I know it's the same because there was strawberry juice residue on my grapes from before. This is basically like a slap in the face. I was offered nothing in return except my same bowl of fruit with grapes in exchange. Wow. Don't count me ever returning here.

The restaurant has a very nice atmosphere are server was very nice. The prices were not your typical price range for the area of town. Regular French toast was 7.49 for two pieces of toast. It did not include sides, one would expect in a traditional meal. The sides were pricy when you consider adding them to the main course, for French toast and 1 side of burnt home fries. expect to pay a good 16$ Not including 3,50 for meat. Not to bad but it could be better. The French toast good and according to my brother the burger was "solid" I'm assuming that's a good thing. Overall the food is decent but has the potential of being overpriced.

I came here to eat with my mom for breakfast and i ordered the french toast and my mom ordered a platter. The service was great:) Food wasn't bad :) Coffee was yummy and i love their jam.

Huge portions and this place was able to accomadate our party of 9 in the banquet room. I liked the fluffy biscuits and waitress was attentitive.

  • Derek O.

Fathers Day Ruined. I don't know if I should say more. The chicken fried steak was cooked in rancid oil. The gravy was just bad. The eggs were ordered over-medium and arrived well done. The hash browns may have been from the day before. My wife's omelet was dry and overcooked. In places it was actually hard. Bottom line is....spend your money elsewhere. As I look at the questions below...all I can think is good for nothing.

  • Cassandra L.

We ate here for breakfast the food was amazing! The homemade biscuits were just incredible. The only reason why I didnt give this place 5 stars is because the service was slow. We watched other tables come and go before we got our food which was weird but not horrible since we wernt in a rush. I would definitely go back just because of how amazing the food was.

  • Sean W.

Food was pretty good ordered the Swedish pancakes with raspberry butter and a side of sausage links which tasted better than there awful water down coffee beverage. Service was average also for a restaurant of this type. Would come here again and try more entrees

  • David L.

Food was excellent and the service was good. I didn't have to wait for anything, but cultural differences will prevent me from returning to this restaurant. When Im taking my son and his grandparents out to eat and i would prefer my grandparents ordering their food first yet when the waitress disregards my request and insists on asking my son what he would like first i consider that taking away a teachable moment and disrespecting ones elders, leaving me tasked with another teachable moment of cutting into a tip which would have made her night and a negative review.

You'll notice right away when you walk through the frontdoor that The Homestead Restaurant harkens back to days long gone. Instead of a sleek or trendy chain theme or a post post industrial chic fashion setting, or let's pretend for a minute it's the 50's with reds and chrome and a black and white checkered floor, this place is like I remember as a kid. Wood, more wood, real wood, and more wood. I love it! It's like walking into an old country kitchen with a cast iron wood stove and all the old fashioned accoutrements of the day complete with a crank by hand meat grinder just like my grandma had. Their food is the same so don't count your calories. The thing here is comfort and comfort food. My brother and I essentially broke his wife (my sister in law) away from the care center (she's been in cancer recovery for way too long) to do something special for the holidays. We enjoyed it so much we came back a week later just before New Years. The Prime Rib is awesome, so is the Meatloaf, that's what I had. All of us enjoyed, the service was excellent (and so was the food) and the chef loves Johnny Cash. Time travel at its best!

I've always had good luck here. I always order the Monte cristo omlette. It's so yummy! If you have never had jam on your omlette I highly suggest it:-) good service, good coffee too!

Great for brunch dates! I have taken a couple of girls to this place and they always really like it. However you are in the red zone of getting friend zoned since its not really a romantic feel. However I love it and its a great brunch area and who doesn't love brunch! PROS: Food is great. I've had about everything this place has to offer and although the portions aren't the largest but the food is really good Also I love the servers that work here. Very friendly and always has a smile on their face. I feel very welcome which is a requirement for me in place like these. CONS: I heard the place has recently gone through a change of management and the food was really bad before that. Its a little too quiet for a breakfast place and it just feels a little sad not seeing customers. They also have a bakery that i never see a person working there and don't know what it does there.

Decent food, service wasn't anything special. Had the Belgian waffle, that was good. Won't be getting the scrambled eggs again (tasted waxy). Will be back to try something different like the Mac and cheese omelette or "the mess"

Honestly shocked at how good this place is. It's a throwback in time, huge portions and free desert with dinner. Amazing. We be back every time we go to Tacoma!

Sooo.... Super huge freshly baked biscuit with bacon jam. Super fun waiter who's family has owned this restaurant for 30 years. Huge plate of swedish pancakes with strawberries & whipped cream with a side of fresh hashbrowns (NOT the dehydrated kind you get from chain restaurants). Amazing strawberry lemonade with real strawberries! Fresh baked chocolate cream pie - to die for!!!! If I was a local, I'd be soo fat!! This place is the bomb-diggity!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE this place!

Homey and faux-rustic place with some decent breakfast grub. Went here while visiting Tacoma with a few friends on their recommendation. The restaurant is a big barn, so you know what you're getting into ambiance-wise as soon as you spot it! Prices were reasonable and food was good, but service was a bit wacky; we had a few different waitresses who were confused about whose section we were in. All were very friendly and polite, in spite of their evident disorganization. We tried the onion rings, eggs benedict, house hamburger with jjs, the turkey lunch, and the veggie omelette, with some hot chocolate, coffee, and a mimosa to go with our respective meals. I had the eggs benedict, which was solidly decent. I liked that it came with a side of homefries AND a small fruit salad, nice touch. Everyone seemed to like their meals and there weren't any complaints about the dishes. We had to ask for extra plates and silverware, and the food didn't come out very quickly (strange considering that we were one of the only tables in the restaurant). We also had a long wait for the check. It's worth noting that the Homestead only serves water on request, so get that order in as soon as you sit down! It's not the sort of restaurant I would have chosen to go to myself, but it was a decent and cheap brunch place. I would be wary of going here during peak hours, as we had service hiccups and long waits between ordering, food, and check at a time when the Homestead was nearly empty. This place would be great to take a large group, especially if you have small children. Rustic and classic American greasy-spoon food with a similar feel.

The biscuits and gravy were incredibly bland the service wasn't bad it just wasn't good and the price was way high for the quality of food. It looked like the place was full of regulars who have come to accept the mediocre service and tasteless food

This restaurant serves home cooking food. The waitress claimed it was all homemade meals, but clearly my meal was NOT homemade. The pre-packaged food was okay, but I can heat up TV dinners at home. I doubt I will return.

Went to the Homestead for breakfast for the third time over the course of a few months. I have never been here for anything other than breakfast, however I am still finding that service is good in the morning. I've always been seated promptly and had drinks brought quickly after they were requested. The wait staff is always friendly and accommodating. I have never had a problem with slow or poor service, having the wrong order or the meal being unsatisfactory, even when it is busy. I am not a diehard fan of this place, but I'll probably continue to go back on occasion because I've always been happy with the friendly service and good breakfast.

We thought breakfast was great at this western style place. The food arrived hot (I get SO tired of lukewarm food), my hashbrowns were nice and brown, the country ham had grill marks on it, and hubby's pancakes were so good that he stopped by the kitchen on our way out to compliment the cook!

Okay, listen: This is a greasy spoon. It's a place where the 50s styled waitresses, who have 8 or 10 tables in their section, call you Honey or Dear. The menu was written before butter's banishment. You're not in Paris or Rome. You're in Tacoma's South End. Don't Order the FISH !! If, on the other hand, you need a little deep fried lubing every now and again, The Homestead's for you. So, go and enjoy what no human should enjoy too often. Enjoy butter and grease and empty coffee cups and the lost art of banter with your waitress, who really just wants you to feel at home. Enjoy what America used to hold close to its arteries, before we actually believed we Deserved full cups.

First time visitor. The girlfriend and I ordered the chicken and waffles, and the new frontier sandwich. The chicken and waffles taste like they do in Texas, and the sandwich was a whole breakfast's worth of flavors crammed into each bite. I learned later that there was a chipotle mayo sauce could have been added to the sandwich. It was decent, but it needed an extra kick. The coffee was excellent, and we drank the whole carafe left on our table during our breakfast. The service was friendly and prompt. Our waitress made us feel very welcome, and checked up on us often enough that we never had to wait long to ask for something. I'll be going back.

Went in on Sunday about 11:00 am. We were in a party of 7 people. Took a long time for the waitress to ask us if we would like coffee or ?. We finally got to order our food and we got it sporadically. Two people's meals came first, then one more, then 15 minutes later two more, etc. My meal and three others were stone cold. Since mine was biscuts & gravy I just didn't eat. One guest ordered A-1 for his steak and never got it even after asking twice more! Another of our party had a burger dip and never got the au jus. Just terrible kitchen and wait staff. Absolutely no organization. It was my first time there and I am a Tacoma native but will never go back. Way too much competition in town for me to settle with this treatment.

Homestead hasn't changed much over the years - their strength is still their breakfast menu ... the lunch and dinner is pretty standard "diner" fare. I do have to say their Liver & Onion dinner is about the best in the area. So, during the breakfast hours, the restaurant can be packed, and their dinner hours you could be the only one in the restaurant (which has little to do with their menu items or service, there's not much traffic in this part of town after 6 or 7 PM). The friendly, efficient and prompt service is pretty consistent (my wife & I have come here once a week since the early 1990's). The food is home-style; hearty, yet in healthy portions (in other words they don't waste food). Their prices are pretty standard for the area. The ambience is casual with a flare to country & western (even the background music tend to be the 1950, 60 & 70's country & western music; Hank William, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, etc). Given the decor & the layout of the restaurant, it can be considered dark inside. Overall, Homestead is a restaurant for the locals ... reliable, consistent and affordable meals.

I've been here several times, both for "dinner" and for breakfast. I've even had a business meeting here. Everytime I come, the food had been consistently good, and the wait staff has been great. I'm a big fan of the french toast, but it's a big plate so just stick with that. I also get scrambled eggs though, and they are always perfect. The atmosphere is just like an old time house. The booths are made of wood and there is lots of privacy. The decor is all antiques, so it's pretty cool to look around at them. The music they play is like old country, but not annoying crap, more like Hank Williams. All in all, it's a pretty yummy place. Go look at the bakery when you first walk in. Yum!!

  • Peter H.

Big fan of this place, even though it epitomizes the American portion (WAY too big!). They have a few new items that haven't made it on the menu, so don't be afraid to ask. The chef is a young guy who is adventurous in a good way! I will say that in the past service has been spoty. But that has been much better of recent, even though the # of customers has grown.

  • Grindy S.

High marks for its bakery on premises and ample portions. This is one of the few Tacoma area coffee shops not part of the Poodle Dog axis or a chain like Denny's or Shari's. One of my favorite dining spots, but watch the calories.

This place is absolutely horrible. When you walk in, immediately you think of a time where hospitality, big portions, and decent prices are part of the deal. WRONG. We were seated by some zoned out hostess. There were 3 other tables filled in the whole place. We sat for OVER 15 minutes before someone came. So we ordered our drinks and food, for fear of waiting another 15 minutes. The food came out curiously quick, about as quick as pouring a glass of water. I ordered the hand breaded chicken fried steak with homemade gravy, breakfast potatoes, and eggs. Everything on that plate besides the eggs was precook end product. The steak was a Banquet brand chicken fried steak, (I asked her and that's what she told me), the biscuit crumbled into powder when I picked it up. This place should be ashamed of itself, and our bill was over $30. People say the cost of living around here is higher, I say that it's because people around here are willing to pay a price for crap, so they must be willing to give gold for everything else. Avoid at ALL costs.

Went there recently with whole family , service was alright, just alright, it wasnt the waitress fault , i think she was the ONLY one there to service the WHOLE place. but the food was HORRIBLE!, green beans were awful , my turkey dinner had wayyy to much pepper!! and bones in the turkey, the chicken and biscuits my husband had looked like dog food, way to much pepper again and a slight film on top as if it sat there for a long time, also horrible... the breakfast dishes a few of my family had were cold. and the chicken fried steak my son had was once again way to peppery, its as if they use the same gravy on all dishes. i want to like this place so bad , but cant i have to say the worst meal we had in a long time . this family says STAY AWAY!!

I went there one day when I was getting my oil changed and I loved it. I love how they set a thing of coffee on your table so you don't have to flag them down for another. My waitress was awesome and I was diggin the eggs benedict. 5 stars would have been given if they made their own hashbrowns:/

Sumi Martinez, the original owner is back and the food is much better now. Love the personal service too. Our family will be back often. Large portions. Clean. Get seated quickly. I like the breakfast myself. Chicken fried steak is huge. Make sure you are hungry to eat this. If you are on a diet, forget it here. If you are a vegetarian, you are in luck.

If I could select zero stars I would have. We went in to have breakfast. We were seated promptly and the waitress came and gave us menues. Then we waited. And we waited. And we waited. After about 15 minutes we got up and walked out. Worst service of any restaurant we've ever been in anywhere in the world.

My girlfriend and I was in the neighborhood saw the sign for the 4.95 breakfast went in only to find out the special only happened Mon thru Fri. Kinda bumed but oh well. Service was friendly but very slow. It took us 20 minutes from the time we got in to the time we got our food. The ice tea my girlfriend ordered tasted very sour and old. Food was good we ate pancakes and omelate. walked out with just 20 bucks less. That was a 4.95 meal not a 20 dollar meal.

Friendly service, but dinner left a lot to be desired. Fish was not fresh, vegetables looked like they came from a can and were way over-cooked. Very reasonable prices, but food quality reflects a lot of shortcuts in the kitchen.

Interior has that country homestead look (probably has something to do with the name). The food is okay, the service has always been weak at best. Think of Denny's and Shari's with a farmhouse flair. Stay away form the bakery it look ok but looks can be deceiving.

Okay food not awesome but not bad. Crispy hash browns little greasy, lots of ham in the scrambled eggs. The eggs were kind of wet. Great sourdough for toast and biscuits!! Service was good for us but we did go later in the day. Overall not bad. Corn pancake was pretty good new flavor experience.

We had to drop my husband's car off at the dealer which is practically next door so thought we'd give this a try. It was ok, not wonderful but ok. I had something called a mess which was eggs, potatoes and some other stuff all done together. I asked for vegetarian and got bacon mixed in, perhaps it was vegetarian bacon. Only one waitress for a very busy place which made the service a bit slow. Will try some of the other places before going back here.

I'm giving this place three stars we have been meaning to go here for a while and we went on mothers day YAY. The waitress we had was so awesome my son was being a lil poop almost the whole time so she brought him crayons and a color page so we could enjoy are meal, my husbands club sandwich was awesome and he liked the jo jo's ok, my son had chicken strips and jo jo's which he didn't eat any of tell we got home but they were ok to (not made from scratch) I had there farmers omelette with hash browns and a side of gravy for my biscuit. The Biscuit was amazing so I'm hoping they are made in house, the omelette was also yummy as were the hash browns the only thing I didn't like was the gravy. I'm unsure as to what meat was in it, but I hope they get a new gravy that one tasted a little of cat food @_@ and I mean that I'm really unsure what the meat was in the gravy. all in all I liked the food and the serves was great but someone needs to teach them to make a southern style cream gravy with a meat product people recognize. Willing to eat there again without the gravy!!! ^_^

I've been here before for breakfast and it was good a few years ago. Stopped for dessert and the banana pie was nasty, ice cream was $1.50 for barely one scoop (Not a good looking one either). The chocolate chip cookie was good. Bottom line don't bother.

The homestead was a great place to eat...about 4 years ago maybe but since they went under new ownership or management but the place went down hill fast, they even had nails sticking out around in places and the food was not very good, I suggest going to Carrs in Lakewood which has the home food like homestead used to be.

Dang, can't choose zero stars. We eat here on occasion and service and food have been average. This last time we had an hour for lunch. Since getting the order taken took a little longer than normal we decided to go for a salad. After nearly a half hour we gave up, talked to greeter at the front to tell him our problem. He apologized. The waitress came over and stated the salads were done. We explained we had no time. He gave us a cookie as compensation and sent us on our way.

My boyfriend and his mom swore this place was awesome. And they were right! I had the hankering for pancakes and sausage. The pancakes were big and perfect. And the sausage was real! :) the ambience is homey and comfy. I really liked it there. I suggest it for any meal of the day!

Went there Sunday morning for breakfast. Overall a good place to eat and waitress was nice and alert. Only issue was ham in omelette was over cooked and sausage gravy has very little flavor. But the rest of food was delicious.

Breakfast food fantastic, cinnamon rolls to die for. Service and speed was excellent for a large group. Other reviews question the lunch and dinner food but breakfast was great. On the edge of a rough part of town so breakfast may be best bet.

(Redbarn) as we call it. Love it here! We only eat the breakfast and it is always delicious. Its very quaint and cozy with a country theme. Omelettes and pancakes are very yummy, their biscuits and sausage gravey are the best!

Went there at about 10 am. Service was good, friendly, checked on us regularly. Food was amazing, but the eggs Benedict my fiance got had too much hollandaise sauce on it so it was a soggy delicious mess. Other than that a pretty authentic American breakfast joint!

This is the place you'll come when you first get in town and you'll be convinced it's better than going to Denny's. Then after trying some of the real brunch places on the area, the very memory of the place gets worse and worse. Fake atmosphere, tiring wait staff, and the food doesn't taste that great.

The place was good some things are probably better then others i had the cinnamon roll french toast and I thought it would have been like the cookie Jar in Fairbanks Alaska. In the cookie jar what i like is something similar to the cinnamon roll french toast. It was still pretty good though

Gross! 2/5

My husband and our two kids had breakfast here. We had a amazing waitress which I wish I would have got her name but did not. Food was good. Steak had little flavor but was Cooked perfectly as ordered. All other food was good. Not a fan of the coffee.

Food was pretty good ordered the Swedish pancakes with raspberry butter and a side of sausage links which tasted better than there awful water down coffee beverage. Service was average also for a restaurant of this type. Would come here again and try more entrees

High marks for its bakery on premises and ample portions. This is one of the few Tacoma area coffee shops not part of the Poodle Dog axis or a chain like Denny's or Shari's. One of my favorite dining spots, but watch the calories.

  • Tyler L.

Good food, friendly service, no wait, the chicken fried steak was great and huge.

If I could select zero stars I would have. We went in to have breakfast. We were seated promptly and the waitress came and gave us menues. Then we waited. And we waited. And we waited. After about 15 minutes we got up and walked out. Worst service of any restaurant we've ever been in anywhere in the world.

Friendly service, but dinner left a lot to be desired. Fish was not fresh, vegetables looked like they came from a can and were way over-cooked. Very reasonable prices, but food quality reflects a lot of shortcuts in the kitchen.

The food was decent at best. The dirty sticky table tops & chairs were gross. Clean the place.
