Hands down the best pork chop I've ever had; restaurant or home cooked. It was moist, not dry. It was so well smoked, I actually passed the plate around the table, just so everyone could smell it. The spicy brown gravy was just enough to make it interesting. Where the table service lacked frequency, it made up for it in sincerity. They also make a fantastic, classic gin martini. I'll be back, and so should you.

We went to Stacks for some beer and pool. Atmosphere was great so we stayed for a burger and a bison meat loaf sandwich. Both were really yummy.

Historic building to have a fun dinner in! The history and decor is a great reason to come for a bite. Love the downstairs bar area with pool tables if you want to grab a drink and play a game of pool. The upstairs is a nice sit down place with pretty good food! They also make their own beer which is always fresh and delicious. Walk around seeing the history after dinner!

I would give it no stars if I could; we came across an ad in a Spokane tourist magazine and thought it looked like fun. They made it sound like a mall with restaurants. So we go Saturday afternoon (about 1:00). First we cannot even find the main entrance or parking. We finally found a few shops and parked on the street (metered). We went into one of the shops and found out from the shopkeeper that the Steam Plant doesn't open until 3:00. Really? What kind of mall doesn't open until 3:00? But then she said there weren't that many shops; they're still working on gettin in tenants. So it was a bust. From the reviews, it sounds as if it's more of a restaurant and a brewery. That was not what the ad advertised. Very misleading and very disappointed. Looked like it would've been fun.

This is one of Spokane's jewels. I love the building, the history, and the brewery. Take time to walk around and enjoy living history. I will bring out of town business associates here because of its uniqueness. The limited menu offers some nice choices; however, it is not really defined. It is not a steak house, not a place for pasta, and not a seafood restaurant.. I was a bit disappointed on this trip. Our steaks were fine (not great), but the service was slow. The restaurant was fairly full and it appeared fully staffed. However, our waiter disappeared for quite a while several times. This was especially bad since we were really enjoying the beers at this microbrewery. They did surprise us with a wonderful ice cream desert to celebrate my dad's birthday. I will return, I hope for better service. This should be a 5 star place.

We were so excited to come here, because my travelling partner had visited a few months earlier, and said it was awesome. This time - not so much. We seated ourself in a spot that was very visible, and someone dropped off waters and said our server would be right over. Our server stood at the bar beside us and looked at us a bunch of times, but didn't come over. Honestly, just looked at us with the dopiest look on his face like, "I know i'm supposed to do something when someone sits in my section, but can't remember what?!!!" 20 minutes later, the manager noticed our empty water glasses, and came over. Didn't apologize, just offered to get our water refilled. I asked for menus and he said our server would be right over. Sigh. A few minutes later he appeared. Thank god. Kind of. We had to ASK if we could please order beers because he was just standing there staring at us, and then again had to ASK if we could please order food. I'm not sure if this poor guy understands his job title. Anyways - useless service aside, the food was only OK - we ordered 3 different appetizers as it was 1/2 price appetizer night - the ribs were pure fat, the lentil hummus was bland, but the cheese bread was awesome! Kinda hard to screw up cheese bread though. The beer sampler was awesome though. 11 beers (5oz each) of each of their brews, and they were great. $20. The Jalapeno Ale was surprisingly delicious (could never drink an entire pint of it, but the 5oz size was just perfect) and the Huckleberry Harvest Ale was also really good! I wish we had just stopped in here for beer and eaten somewhere else - i felt sad for my travelling partner who kept saying he couldn't believe how shitty this visit was compared to his last one. Also, it was cool to walk around the building afterwards and look at all the old steam plant pipes and tunnels and etc....I'd recommend just going for a beer and looking around - don't waste your time eating here.

If you go to Spokane you should check this place out. It's like a free museum with a bar inside. 1/2 priced appetizers and pints on Sunday. Very cool spot.

This place is just unbelievably cool. Such an interesting building that you can freely walk around. Like a free museum. Food and drinks were great. Staff was exceedingly friendly.

Impressive atmosphere serving lackluster food and disappointing beer. The beer needs more carbonation. The beer is poured into glasses and fills the glass as fast as water does. I'm sure they feel more productive by serving beer so quickly, but they are serving the equivalent of flat soda to customers.

This food is amazing!! When I think of Spokane I think of chain restaurants. Steam plant is good quality food cooked perfectly. From the appetizers to the entrees I was highly impressed. Great service also! Highly recommended.

Although the place serves amazing food, on this occasion, my waiter failed to send my order to be made. I subsequently waited 55 minutes until I asked the waiter the status of my food only to be told that it hasn't been made. The place was not busy so it is not an excuse for the lack of service. It was a Friday night and all the booths were empty except for a couple in a corner. (Empty on a Friday night?) They did not offer to comp me for my drink. Although after further complaint I got a free dessert and a free drink, it is still quite unacceptable that they would treat me this way. The service from the waiter is quite lacking. If your waiter is Virginia, please ask for another. She should not work here. #virginiasucks. If I could give this place 0 stars, I would.

Excellent service, beer and food. Get the taster tray-loved the huckleberry, jalapeño and double stout. The calamari was piping hot and fresh, while my burger was juicy and had a nice toasted bun. Such a cool old building with a fresh twist. Will definitely be going here to celebrate my graduation!

  • Allison P.

Came in just for the beer and I must say the beer here is amazing! After looking at the beer menu we couldn't decided so got a taster tray! Loved the huckleberry, jalapeño, stout and seasonal pumpkin!! They also have a great drink menu! So you can bring non beer drinkers here! Servers were really friendly and helpful! Great character in this place! We didn't get food so can say how that was but from what I saw and smelled I am gonna go out on a limb and say it's good! This is a most stop for us next time we are in Spokane!

I wish I could give it a good review I heard your food is excellent but I wasn't able to try it because the service was so poor. My husband and I seated. Never were greeted or water brought to us. A few minutes later Four man were seated behind us. Instantly the server was there with water and took their drink order came back took their dinner order still never acknowledging us. Walked right past us and took the next booth order I think we were invisible. I've heard they have excellent food but I will never be back to try it service is very poor. Save me about $75 plus tip

The parking is interesting. I wish it had a bigger private lot. The building itself is fabulous. Totally unique and interesting. I was in awe when I walked in. I've never seen anything like it. The staff was pretty friendly. It took a while for the waiter to come take our order and the service was slow but the food was pretty good. It also took a while to finally get our check but it had begun to get busier as evening progressed so I wasn't too upset. The atmosphere and my partner made it easy to be patient.

  • J L.

Food was good. Quite. I think they deserve more than 3 stars but likely not the 4 I'm giving them. Beer was passable, but not great. (For great try No-Li about 2 miles away). Service was very pro with knowledgeable and attentive staff. The atmosphere of the historic - registry building (a former steam plant) is fun. Ask for a pub menu in the regular dining room and you'll have additional op tons like fish & chips or buffalo burgers. My companions enjoyed their pasta dishes and my burger was very tasty (the sweet - potato fries were great). Slightly pricier on some dishes than it should be (I'm anti-$12 burgers), but appropriately priced on others. If it weren't for the interesting building and the great service I'd give it a pass, but I'd recommend it to those who haven't been, but not if they were beer - snobs like me.

Loved it. The food, the service and the decor. It has an actual steam stack that you can visit with lots of visually appealing and interesting things to look at. I had the rib eye. It was amazing. The appetizers were great and so was the desserts. It was so fantastic. A must do while in Spokane.

  • Billy S.

Great food and awesome atmosphere! I love all the history in the building and you can walk around and look at some of the old machinery and such. Also I have to say, their meatloaf with home made huckleberry ketchup is delicious. I would not normally get meatloaf from a restaurant, especially with so many unique options but I recommend it! Also try the duck. Some of the best I have had! Friendly fast service. Check them out!

Great food and drinks! However they really need to work on seating. I read a review on here when I reserved a Valentine's dinner on OpenTable.com and probably should've taken it more seriously. The review stated they made reservations for a romantic dinner online only to be seated next to a very loud table of teenagers. To my surprise, the same thing happened to us! The first time I went to Stacks we had a 5 star experience. This being the reason I chose them for Valentine's Day. I recommend not making reservations and simply stopping in because I think they only use one room for reservations that has a big table in the middle for parties of 10 or more. They should do their best to consider others reservations and not seat a couple next to a huge table of cussing drinking 21 year olds. Also their waiter was sweating profusely and it was disgusting!

  • J M.

Terrible. The only good thing was the building was neat from a historic standpoint. Just go to the bar, have one overpriced drink to see the place, then leave. My wife and I with one appetizer and one drink and dinner was $70. Then I came home and ate dinner again. Portions are a joke, quality is terrible and service may have well been a Wendy's. First really bad review I think I've written.

  • Andy W.

The brewed beer here is possibly the worst Spokane offers. The lines are way to long and most the beers taste like popcorn. If you enjoy brewery beer I would avoid this place and their popcorn bombs.

PRICEY FOOD=GOOD SERVICE= OK All & all...it wasnt bad food, or bad service...it just wasnt great. The prices are too high for the quality of food. The building is great!

Unique setting for a restaurant/brewery deep in the bowels of a nearly century-old Spokane landmark. Great beer, fantastic atmosphere, and pretty good food, too. Searching for local breweries while visiting the city, Steam Plant looked like an interesting, and convenient, choice (most of the others are located outside of the central downtown area). I'm really glad we made our way here-- this has to be one of the coolest settings for a brewpub that I've ever seen, and the cold Jalapeno Ale they served me was amazing! It looks as though the family and group dining area is on the main floor, but we followed the signs to the pub in the basement. There are big pipes, tanks, gages, electrical boxes, and other equipment from the building's former life as an actual steam plant throughout both the restaurant and pub. The attention to detail that went into preserving some of the original character of the place while at the same time transforming what used to be a hot, filthy, industrial space into a fine dining establishment is astounding. Steam Plant reminds me a lot of some of the McMenamin's properties, though without as much artistic flair. On the evening I was here, their beer menu had several delicious-looking options-- but I had to go with the Jalapeno Ale. That one was so good, I never did wind up trying any of the others! Pepper beers aren't terribly common, and jalapenos happen to be my favorite vegetable (or fruit, if you want to be technical about it). Most of the pepper beers I've tried thus far either don't have enough 'kick' or else result in some painful after effects (heartburn), and often don't have a great flavor, either. The Steam Plant Jalapeno Ale, on the other hand, is perfection in a pounder: a crisp, light bodied effervescent ale that actually tastes like fresh jalapeno, with just the right amount of spicy kick (and no heartburn afterwards), served ice cold with a slice of lime. YUM!! As for the food, this place is definitely more 'fine dining' than 'brewpub': most entrees are in the $18-$28 range. Not that the menu is gourmet or anything (steaks, seafood, etc.), just a little on the spendy side. I ordered a basic hamburger, one of the few options available for under $10, and was quite happy with it. Can't wait to come back for more of the Jalapeno beer, and maybe even try some of their others next time as well :)

I went out to the Steam Plant one of my friends. Upon arrival to the restaurant, their was a mob of teenagers in hoodies with their faces covered. We waited for them to leave and that's when we headed into the restaurant. I heard on the news that someone was brutally beaten just a week prior and so we were extra cautions. We were greeted okay and got seated right away. The overall service was great and the atmosphere is pretty comfortable. The noise level was average and our waitress was friendly. The food was OK, but it did not match the price. Coming there I expected something different, but the menu was dull. Although the food was good, it wasn't distinct from other restaurants. My friend ordered Fish and Chips while I ordered Smoked Salmon Pasta. Our total was $46 + tip. If you're coming to Steam Plant, come for the view and/or order something you already know.

We came here for dessert drinks, and Steam Plant did not disappoint. I had the chocolate martini - a girly-girly drink, for sure - but absolutely delicious nonetheless. He had the double stack stout, which was absolutely divine. I kept stealing some of his because it really was liquid chocolate gold. This beer is the gateway beer for those who love chocolate and don't like beer. We didn't have any food, but these drinks were absolutely delectable and very reasonably priced. WIN!

I walked over to this place from my hotel. I was disappointed that it wasn't open yet (so check the hours before you come) but I came back later and I was glad I did. The building itself is worth a stop. The beer was good, the staff was friendly. Parking though seemed strange (though I walked).

Sorely disappointed in the food. The pasta salad my boyfriend got , just fell apart so was tough to eat. They did not charge and he ordered the Korean ribs, they were good. My black and blue steak was alright but nothing special, overall we weren't impressed. The atmosphere and building are really neat though .

The Steam Plant is a unique drinking and dining experience. First off it is located in a huge refurbished Steam Plant that now houses several large dining areas and several areas in which the consumer can enjoy a few cold ones, watch sports, and enjoy the ambiance. Drinks: They craft their own beer, all of which tastes great! That in itself is a huge positive, but for those that don't want beer do not worry. They also carry a delicious menu of cocktails that can easily soothe ones taste buds and enlighten their spirits. Food: They have a wide variety of food on their menu that lifts them above a traditional Gastropub into more of a fancier restaurant. They tread that fine line but also have great bar food for those that are not looking at stuffing their belles with food and would rather have more beer. Cons: Parking appears to be the only issue: tight in some places, open in others. Just don't park in the main entrance area where it is really narrow.

Our party of 20 enjoyed great food and cocktails! I ordered the steelhead sprinkled with bay shrimp and scallops. The fume blanc reduction sauce was perfect and didn't mask the flavor of the seafood. Came with potatoes and zucchini. The starter salads were great too! Came with sliced egg!! I was super impressed by how quickly and efficiently we were served. The kitchen and waitstaff were definitely prepared for us. Kudos!

I've had my share of bad dining experiences, but none have compelled me to actually write an online review about it. I consider myself to be somewhat of a food snob and I certainly am a beer enthusiast. If you enjoy eating at Applebee's and the sort, then you may not appreciate my opinion. I ordered the Red Snapper dinner entree and was horrified at the brownish lime-avodcado salsa that topped it. The avocados were brown. Brown avocados. If the kitchen staff and my server thought this was acceptable to serve then I can assume that what I don't see is only that much more horrifying. The fish itself was tasteless and could have been Tilapia for all I know, it was so over breaded and soggy. The bean-rice mash resembled canned dog food. The only edible part of the meal were the vegetables. The beer was god-awful. I'm surprised they aren't hiring a new brew-master. We started with a pitcher of their limited edition Pale Ale, and it tasted like brown carbonated water. No flavor. After that I asked to sample their IPA, equally boring. At this point I switched to water. My husband and I both felt so gross after dinner that we both went to the bathroom and "pulled the trigger", flushing $100 down the drain. I will never step foot in that restaurant again.

beer = awesome. had some pumpkin seasonal and some huckleberry and both were delicious! service = fantastic. our waitress was very friendly and had a good pace. food = meh. I wasn't too impressed with the buffalo burger or the sweet potato fries. Chocolate cake tasted like it was taken from some frozen pie. But the nachos were really good! verdict : go for drinks and bar food, skip the dining.

I typically like the Steamplant, but this particular evening ruined that for me. Mind you, I realize that it was a bad idea to show up unannounced with a party of 18 on a Thursday night, but hey, your restaurant is large and we really like your beer! I suppose I should start from the beginning: When my friends and I arrived, we were greeting by your wonderful hostess! She was really nice and made a few jokes with us. That was short lived, however. The vibe completely changed as we got downstairs; there we were greeted with annoyed glares and obviously negative whispers. As we sat down at a table, the waitress took a really long time to greet us. We were fine with that. Slower service is totally expected with a bigger party. (I suppose this would be a good time to note that I was a server throughout college, and I am very familiar with the industry and its practices. One more note: in my opinion, I would have been happy to serve a party like ours! We were a group of young professionals with nice manners and a willingness to run up a bar tab - but I digress). As the evening went on, the attitudes got worse. I really did not want to spend money there anymore, but leaving really wasn't an option. The waitress (a 30-something year-old blond-ish lady) showed that she was not happy with us, and it was really obvious that the rest of the staff was talking about our party. You see, they didn't realize that one of the people in our party was sitting at the bar and overheard quite a few negative remarks. For example, the waitress put a drink in front of the wrong person and explained to another staff member that she knew she had done it, but didn't care to correct the error. Moreover, she explained, "I didn't want to put it in front of him." What? The guy she was referring to is so nice! Like seriously, I have absolutely no idea what that was about. The bartender was also really rude. Whenever we would approach the bar, he would NEVER greet us until we waived him down. I hate waiving down servers. I find it rude, but he literally would not serve us unless we asked him to. Again, I have no idea what that was about. Furthermore, even the bar back was rude. If we asked him for something, he would act as though he didn't want to help us. I assume I know what happened: they were all upset that we were there because they wanted to get off early, and I imagine that we were the "talk of the town" in the back halls. Or, rather, the talk of the town on the main floor - in front of other customers! The bottom line is that we were treated like crap. We were served good food and delicious beer. The staff, however, needs a good pep talk. So here it is: keep in mind that people often go to restaurants to celebrate special events. In this case it was my dear friend's birthday. She is such a nice girl. I feel that if they knew her, they would feel horrible that they ruined an evening intended to celebrate her birth. Hey, I'm a realist! I know that serving the public is tough. However, do like servers have been doing for ages: talk about the people in the back halls, put on a smile, do your job, earn your tip, and go spend that tip on booze after your shift ends.

Oh yum! A great place in a historical landmark, the Steam Plant has a great selection of custom beers and makes a great venue for private events. Steaks are top-notch and seasoned appropriately.

This just might be the coolest space I have ever been in. Kudos to the Steam Plant for not ripping everything out of this old historic building to make more room for tables for the bottom line. Everyone appreciates how you have worked around all the machinery and leaving the interior as intact as you have. Visiting your restaurant was like exploring the bowels of an old ship, it was awesome! I encourage ever visitor to this place to poke their noses into ever little nook, cranny, and room to fully appreciate this place. Loved you craft beers too. Never before have I liked so many brews that 1 brewery had. Usually I like 2, 3, maybe 4 brews that any given brewery has, but with you it was almost a clean sweep, the exception being that nasty jalapeno beer that you make. Other than that, the entire experience was top notch and I will most definitely be paying you a visit EVERY time I go through Spokane.

This place is fantastic! I really don't understand the bad reviews at all, but I guess some people only come to this site to complain. I'm from out of town, this is by far the coolest place I've visited since I got here. I live in Southern California where the restaurant scene is top notch. I'm a foodie and a beer snob so please know my 5 stars are not given lightly. Try the beer sampler, there wasn't a single beer I didn't like. The price definitely justifies ELEVEN 5 oz pours. The food prices are very reasonable and the food is great. Even if you don't want to eat here come check out how they renovated the old steam plant.

For all you Brew lovers, history buffs & authentic culture explorers. This is it for Spokane, Washington! Unbelievable history, fascinating rooms & a view from the bottom of the West Stack was breath taking...and I haven't even told you about the exceptional service we received. Ask for the 'Beyond Bartender' Jeff as he treated my brother & I to a unforgettable night at the Steam Plant Grill here in Spokane, WA. My brothers first visit ever to Spokane & it was a must for me to take him here. And was he ever impressed as I was too. Working for a Hotel here in Spokane where our mission statement is, iCare iCan. I know excellent, exceptionable service when I see it. You need to stop here & you will kick yourself if you don't. Steam Plant Grill, history in the viewing, great service in the staff. p.s. Sweet potato fries, amazing accompanied with a Whitman Wheat Brew

Wish I could give it a 3 1/2 stars. We had great service there last night, our waitress was knowledgable and very nice. My husband liked his food, our appetizer was great, and my dinner was okay. It has a great interior and something I was into. I would go back for happy hour or drinks and snacks. I feel like the veggie medley and sauces weren't a "made fresh" type of restaurant and more like frozen and pre-packaged items.

the interior is awesome as its a renovation of the old steam plant with all the piping, boilers, etc. The food could use improvement. Quesadilla was hammered, salmon pasta tasted like bait and it all seems rather pricey for the lack of deliciousness. If you want fish you should go to Rock City Grille at the mall

  • Jingwen Y.

Interior looks neat since they have that industrial look and a bar downstairs. Service and food was not that impressive. We order steaks and ribs and I have to say, they were a bit over cooked and dry. The recommended dish from our waitress was pretty good so make sure you follow their recommendation. Great place to order some beer and just chill. I'm not sure I would come back for their steaks.

All told, I was pretty happy with my visit to the Steam Plant. The building is really cool, and the place has a nice vibe. The food was good, and well prepared. The true star of the show was the beer. I started with the Stout, which was excellent. Great body, and the right amount of creaminess. After that, I went with the Brown Ale. The bartender mentioned that he had both the 2012 and the 2013 versions available, and let me have a taste of each. While the newer one was good, the year-old had a smoothness and complexity that couldn't be beat. After a couple of those, it was time to call it a night. Good thing I had a short walk back to my hotel. My only complaint is with the wait staff. It was a slow evening, so the staff wasn't very busy. As a result, they were hanging around at the bar (where I was sitting) and talking. While it wasn't terrible, it just didn't give the most professional impression.

Beautiful vibe. It's a really good place to take customers because it's so unique, but it's a little mid-level if you want authentic Spokane.

One word Appetizers! I have been here many times for there happy hour of 1/2 off beer and appetizers from 5pm - 6pm and I have never been disappointed. The coal miners bread is seriously delicious and so is the steal-head. Decent made in house beer selection, try the Stout and you wont be disappointed. No for the bad, I have only been here once for dinner and I wasn't impressed. The food was a little over priced and my crunchy coconut halibut was soggy. Also the building (Steam Plant) is absolutely astonishing. Yes for appetizers and beer from 5-6, no on dinner for me.

This place is awesome inside, very neat atmosphere. The food was not cheap brewpub food as I had hoped but our server was very accommodating and not only let us in sit in a private room but also let us close the doors so the toddler could run around. We tried all of the beers as well, the amber was good as were a few others and the jalapeno beer was... unique!

Have to recommend the cheese bread appetizer & the butternut squash ravioli, they're amazing! Every time I've been to this restaurant have had impeccable service, and the food & beer always top-notch... Can't wait to come back!

I can't say no to a Saturday happy hour! Our group of three went at 3 PM and took advantage of the deals: Cheaper beers and half price apps. The Steam Plant Stout mixed with Huckleberry beer is ahhh-mazing, and our great thanks to our wonderful waitress for suggesting it to us--and bringing a sample. The strawberry seasonal was also good. I'd like to go back a try all the brews, really. We tried 4 different apps and all were good. The chicken satay skewers were yummy, but the Thai peanut sauce really made the meal. The Steak kabobs were cooked well, and that sauce was also excellent. The clams/mussels/bacon dish was tasty, though two pieces of bread was not nearly enough to soak up the juice (which is one of the best parts). And the bread was the best, in my opinion. What's not to like about bread, garlic, and cream cheese though??? We also tried 2 desserts: The apple ala-mode was delish what with its cre'me brulee crust and caramel sauce? and the chocolate was OK. Overall, our service was superb--very prompt, friendly, informative. Time of day was ideal in that it wasn't crowded or noisy. Happy hour prices were good--though regular prices were a bit steep for our budget. Though I did see some affordable soups, side salads, and a $7 burger on the menu. And the location is super-cute (where can I buy a loft like this?) and historic. We took the self-guided tour and weren't disappointed. One of the 5 best places in the Inland Northwest--easily.

Very short handed.. We finally left after being seated and then totally ignored for 15 minutes.....and it was early and not too busy! I've heard this from friends, too.

This place is worth coming to just to check out the building and have a beer. So creative. Food is delicious, too.

I went here with a group of friends for happy hour. I ordered cheesy garlic bread and it was delicious! I had a huckleberry ale with it and it was also good. During happy hour appetizers are half price and they have beer, wine and drink specials. Parking is free if you get it validated. Unique interior. The waitress was friendly and quickly moved some tables together for our group. She was very informative about the specials. I hope we go here again!

I had the Cajun Shrimp, served atop Red Beans & Rice. Now, I've got to say, the favors were good; however there were no discernible "Red Beans". The beans were cooked into the rice, early this morning and disintegrated into the rice, making it simply Cajun Shrimp, served atop mush. One would believe that a chef is running this kitchen, which makes me wonder about quality control. Ya just don't serve things that you wouldn't otherwise eat, just sayin'.

Stopped in for a beer. Had a hell of a time finding the entrance. Sat at the bar. Bartender was pleasant. I had the huckleberry, he had the Scottish. Both were fine. It was happy hour, 2.75 pints. That's fair. Building is neat. Decor is okay. All of the TVs were messed up. Poor reception I guess. I feel sorry for the waitstaff that have to go up and down those stairs all shift, wouldnt a dumbwaiter be more effective? We would come again.

If I had to sum up my review, I'd say "Lame-O food, great environment". Menu for "normal diners" may be an entirely different experience, but for groups spending gobs of money to create a nice party, it was disappointing. I've attended two group parties at the Steam plant, and both times it was tough keeping our drinks full - our entire group of 25 christmas Partiers were either drinking too fast our the server was too slow. The appetizers were to be flowing freely, and each tray was flowing 1 at a time every 20-30 minutes - starving people - we were literally sharing onion rings so no one would go hungry. Made us joke about feeling like the Donner Party - we ordered plenty, just couldn't to us, we guess. The food items to choose from were so-so Lame-O.... nothing interesting or different, same old stuff you'd see at a bar. We expected more interesting higher end fair for such a cool environment/location. Disappointed. One of these events - our group of 25 ended up wrapping up early and heading to another restaurant where we enjoyed a full dinner impromtu - just couldn't keep torchering ourselves trying to get fed there. If you do decide to go - God Speed, I wish you well in trying to get fed in a timely fashion.

I got to say I have been here 2 times as a guest since I worked there, and the reason I went back is because I have first hand sent that there food is fresh, I love their appetizers, and they have some amazing pastas, and their steak it to die for, I also like their beer and if they had better parking when they were a little busy I would stop by more, I can say don't judge this place by the outside, it's got history, and what they have done to the inside make this place a nice place to eat or even take a girl out on a nice date

Some of the best beer we could find in Spokane. The barley wine was fantastic. Great happy hour special. Cool atmosphere. We will be making it a must-stop on future trips to the area.

We came in from out of town a couple of times in the last year and stopped at the Steam Plant. I would echo some of the other reviews. The beers are very good, but the food is pricey for what you get. The reason we were really put off was that the service was incredibly slow and the place was practically empty both times. Each time it took almost twenty minutes for the waiter to show up to take our drink order at 545 on a week day and 530 on a Saturday when the place was empty! That is inexcusable. Then it took quite a while before we were able to order. The food came promptly and was well done. But then the waiter disappeared again and we had to get another waiter to bring our bill! This happened both times. I can't imagine what the place is like if they are busy. We won't be coming back here on our next trip..

Probably one of the best places to go out with a group in Spokane. The food is pretty good (although pricey), and the beers are delicious. I suggest either sitting downstairs in the pub area, or at least asking for the pub menu if you sit upstairs. I'm not sure why, but there is a whole extra section to the pub menu that includes sandwiches and some other items that I think are the best options on the menu (or not on the menu if you sit upstairs). My favorite is the buffalo chicken wrap with gorgonzola cheese. I've always been impressed with the friendliness of the staff, whether going out of their way to make sure we've got everything we need, or dropping off an occasional pitcher of beer with a "whoops, I accidentally poured this extra pitcher, guess you guys can have it..." I also find the beer delicious. I'm not a big fruit in the beer kind of guy, and to be honest I didn't even know that huckleberry was a real fruit until very recently, but their huckleberry beer is unbelievable delicious. I wish I lived close enough to get some on a regular basis.

Dinner Saturday night was fabulous (March 24, 2012) We were there with friends from Coeur d'Alene. My friend Steve is a fan of good beer. He was impressed! I had the Snapper which was very good. I told my wife it was better than anything I have ever had at Anthony's. D & D Brantley

If you are ever in Spokane on business or visiting a friend, you have to stop here for a drink or four. Their meals are nothing to shout about and overpriced, but the fantastic layout and ambiance of the place cannot be stressed enough. Two enormous smoke stacks are attached to the restaurant/former steam plant. They were used as the main source of electricity in Spokane until 1986. Steam and coal were burned to create massive amounts of energy. Now it's a restaurant/bar! One that I would give anything to be allowed to explore after closing time with all of it's catwalks and mysterious corridors. it's a vital part of Spokane's history and one of the most recognizable sights in downtown Spokane (what with the smokestacks and all). Go there and have some beer made at their in-house brewery or some bar food.

My first Yelp review - easy way to start. Business trip took me to Spokane. Steam. Plant recommended by hotel. Completely impressed after a real disappointment a few blocks away the previous night. Smoked steelhead appetizer - perfectly smoked. With flavored cream cheese, onions and capers - could eat this everday. Coworker had Thai chicken satay appetizer - cooked correctly and sauce awesome. Halibut main course for me and steelhead on the other side of the table. Only knock at all - brochinni was a little undercooked. Beers were fantastic. Chocolate tort dessert better than most and service fantastic. Highly recommended!!

I loved this place. Its a converted power plant that I immensely enjoyed exploring after my meal. There seem to be at least two levels of seating with the bar downstairs. I recommend sitting at the bar as it has a bowels of the ship/power plant feel. The Steam Plant has an excellent selection of microbrew from CdA and the fish and chips are great.

This place is HUGE and beautiful but it is also dead and boring. From where I sat at the bar, I could see a total of 10 people...including two servers and a bartender. A server kept running up and down the stairs talking about how busy she was upstairs (but I never saw ANY tables upstairs when I walked by). I was told by the hostess that it is normally dead in January and on weekdays so maybe it is more active in the summer? The beer selection is nice and cheap (4.75 per pint) and they have an interesting selection of local beers but I don't plan on buying any food after reading the other reviews. The bartender was not that great IMO. Considering the bar was dead, he could have struck some sort of conversation or AT LEAST asked if I would like another beer when my glass was empty. I never do this, but I didn't tip just because he took my drink order once and never said anything else to me as if I didn't exist. Sorry dude- but filling up a glass and then ignoring your customer doesn't warrant a 20% increase in costs. (there were 3 other people at the bar - they all got the same treatment. Pretty bad since he didn't have much to do and all his time was spent hanging out with the other employees) How would I improve this place? Fire the bartender and replace him with someone that can make drinks AND interact with customers on dead nights (and it sounds like a LOT of nights are dead at Steamplant). I would also only allow seating on one floor on slower evenings. There is just too much space to have everyone separated - the place felt like a ghost town and I didn't want to stick around (I noticed everyone else split after their first drink too...) 5 stars for ambiance... Negative 4 stars for hospitality.

While visiting Spokane we decided om 4/19/2014 to make a visit to Steam Plant for dinner. We arrived early - didn't know that they didn't open until 3 so we made online reservations and waited for an hour because we thought that it might be worth it. The doors opened and we were seated. Looking at the menu our family of five vegetarians selected the vegan ravioli. The waitress, shrugged her shoulders and said oh, sorry about that, we sold it all out last night! What? Made ahead food at a 5 star restaurant? We were disappointed but asked her to share what vegetarian options that they had available for us. She said she would have to check. She then talked to the chef as well as the assistant manager and they suggested a lettuce salad and an appetizer of hummus! I asked her if she was kidding and she kind of laughed and said -sorry about that! We said that we had planned on dinner and so we were going to go elsewhere. We left and went to Clinkerdagger where we were treated fantastically and got a top notch view of the falls too! We will not return to Steam Plant.

The Steam Plant Grill is one of the better places to eat in the wasteland that is Spokane. I think the food is pretty good (not superb, but again, we're in Spokane), and the beer is fantastic. We've gone here on date night for fancy meals, and hit up the bar for regular fare. They now have a pretty good happy hour from 4 to 6 on weekdays, all day Sunday, where pints are $2.50 and apps are 1/2 off. That's a great price from some of their microbrews, which are frequently surprising in flavor and boldness. Last night we went to the Steam Plant to have burgers and beer. True to form, I ordered a burger and beer. My companions ordered various things...one ordered wings, one ordered a quesadilla minus meat and onions (a vegetarian who is allergic to onions), and the last ordered fish and chips. The prices are a bit steep, but you do get a ton of food. I was happy to see they would accommodate our veggie friend's allergy. Unfortunately, the wings arrived and were not cooked all the way through. My friend has a fear of getting food poisoning/salmonella, especially when it comes to chicken (he's had it twice before), so he freaked out a bit. The waitress handled the situation with aplomb. She comped him the wings and gave him a new plate. And she comped him a beer when it was clear he was still pretty shaken up. I was impressed with their willingness to help him out and meet his needs as best as they could. Props for that, Steam Plant.

I really enjoyed the beer sampler and the steelhead salmon entree I had here. The building is very nice and has several levels. The noise level is fairly high so you can get a bit rowdy here. My company had an event , so I didn't see the prices, some previous reviewers think it is pricey here. I would definitely come back again.

It would be a cool atmosphere but when we got there it appeared to be closing and there were no people there--at 7:30 in the evening. The hostess showed us to the pub in the basement and said the full menu would be available. The waiter gave us the menus and we were ready to order when he realized the kitchen had switched to the limited menu. Hugely disappointing. The limited menu's only veg friendly option was an overpriced salad. The pumpkin beer, their seasonal special was delicious!

What a waste of an awesome space! Such a cool location but the food is so bad that I can't stomach going back. My husband and I were invited to dinner at the Steamplant with friends who really like this place. We had been interested in checking it out so I was excited to go. I had the chicken with fontina cheese and artichokes and my husband had the duck. My chicken was dry and tasteless and my husbands duck was less than impressive. I swore we wouldn't go back but we were invited again for a birthday party. We figured we would be less adventurous and try some pub fare. I ordered the buffalo burger and my husband had fish and chips. I'm not really positive how they could mess up a burger but they did. It was so dry I could barely digest it and my husbands fish and chips were giant puffs of soggy breading with the smallest pieces of fish hiding inside. The service however was great. Everyone was very pleasant. If you go here, go for drinks or desert but SKIP the main course.

Great experience all around! The wait staff was excellent and the food was acceptable. Taking into account the food quality vs cost I am going with three stars, it is pricy for what you get. Overall we were pleased just not blown away.

This place used to be great until they re-did their menu a couple of years ago. It's fine for drinks and the building is cool but they think they are much nicer than they really are. They do to-go kegs from the bar but use a special keg that is unique to them so no swapping keg shells unless they are from the Steam Plant. Used to go here a lot. Will not go again.

Gosh, I so much want this place to be great and succeed and I really hate only being able to give it two stars....and actually wished for that two-and-a-half option. First, the venue is fantastic! Great job of re-purposing the old steam plant. Very cool! Five stars. Sat in the bar area on a Wednesday night, there seemed to be no one in the rest of the place. Server was friendly and very efficient. 4 stars. Beer: The IPA was quite good and the Vanilla Bourbon Stout was absolutely fantastic! Wish I wasn't driving so I could have sampled deeper. Now for the sad story: The food was just NOT what it needed to be for a place of this caliber, especially considering how "proudly' they priced things. Blackened Sirloin seemed like it had been taken out of the freezer and thrown on the grill and the Gorgonzola butter served with it simply tasted like salty margarine. Snap beans were like eating old straw. Roasted red skins were very good, crisp and well seasoned on the outside, moist and fluffy inside (Sadly, I fear this was a lucky accident). My co-worker had the pork chops which were over sauced, over seasoned and over cooked, with the same sides. I WILL go back, specifically to spend some time around the beer selection. And when I do go back, I WILL make comments to the management about the food - because if they are smart and want this place to succeed, the will be reading these posts and listening to customers. Hope reigns eternal.

This place had a ton of potential. I wanted to like this place, and gave the service and restaurant the benefit of a doubt to prove their worth for my patronage. I was part of a medium size group, and the restaurant was not busy at 7:00 on a weekend. The hostess sat us in a space that (we were later told) was not normally seated on the weekend. There were multiple tables in the main dining area at the time that would have accommodated our party. Their home-brewed beers are delicious. However, due to the quality of the service and the entrees we received, I will not be going back to this restaurant, and cannot recommend it for others. Here is an abbreviated list of what went wrong with our meal: 1. Service was slow. Our server, Meagan, took drink orders, but took 10 minutes to bring any of them to the table. She took our orders, but we received our food after waiting over 30 minutes. After the meal and dishes were cleared (by the hostess, not the server BTW), we waited 10 minutes to receive our checks, and then another 10 minutes for her to even take our cards to run the transaction. 2. Service was bad. Meagan didn't come to our table to check how our food was, which wasn't good. My sister's tri-tip steak was flavorless (the gravy needed serious seasoning, but they don't keep salt on the table). My other sister ordered a pasta dish, asking for slight modifications (take out some of the vegetables), and received a $16 bowl of dry pasta and drier chicken, with no seasonings. Because Meagan didn't come to check on our table, I first tried waving her down, then actually had to get out of my seat to get her attention. After asking for salt and inquiring about the pasta, Meagan made excuses for the kitchen about how the pasta absorbed all the sauce (another person at the table ordered the same dish as-is and had additional seasoning, etc. that were clearly left out of the modified dish). She came back 5 minutes later with a shaker of salt and a bowl of melted butter for the dry pasta that we had to request. 3. CREDIT CARD SECURITY BREACH. When we gave Meagan our cards to be run, she took them, then placed them on an empty table, turned her back from the cards, and then continued to wait on another table. We were seated right next to a server station, and she could have run the cards immediately, but she left them on a table across the restaurant (this was clearly visible from where we were seated).

Sitting in here right now, and I am not impressed. The place does look great, but that's as far as it goes. Service has been spotty, the food too highfalutin' for a brewpubs (goegonzola and mushrooms clearly cause this chef a tummy-glazing...and both ingredients I detest). Plus they're playing the Grateful goddamn Dead in here, which is like taking a giant dump into my earholes. The extra star is for the cool look (and look cool it does), but everything else is pretty arse. Substandard yet pricey food with decent beers does not a brewpub make. I will not be back. Partly I am just bummed because the idea of it seemed so cool and unique.

Food was tasty and their pumpkin beer was delish. We ordered the nachos, skewers and calamari. One turn off was the coleslaw... It was sour cream blobbed onto the cole... Not very appetizing. Overall I'd come by again for a good beer, decent service and overall good experience.

Very interesting decor (former steam heat plant for city of Spokane). Especially if you are into big iron. Ribs were boiled. I prefer slow smoked. Caesar salad was salty but satisfying. I enjoyed the place more for the pld boilers, heavy machinery, and an old smokestack one can walk inside of.

Wow the steamed shell food app is a must have, the double stack stout is soooo yummy. The service is very good and I love their new manager. Although they don't have a clue how to temp their meat.

One of the more interesting restaurant settings I've experienced. It really is an old steam plant with a lot of the same fixtures from when it was provides energy for the city of Spokane (pre 1986). You can walk around and visit the old steam pipes, coal chutes, etc.. with pictures to illustrate the history. There are tables set throughout all of this and I think you can request a tour...but not sure on that. Food was good. I had the salmon plate with veggies and a craft beer for just under $30 (with tip). No complaints on the meal as it was very tasty. They stock from a local brewery (Coeur d'Alene Brewery) and offer about 10 very different beers (porters, lager, ales, etc...). To find it just look for the two huge smoke stacks in downtown!

Went here tonight with my parents and Grandma. We all had a great time and great drinks. We just went for drinks but it was a great time. The staff was nice and helpful in looking for other items other than beer to drink. I loved this place b/c they have 11 beers on tap! I asked for a sampler and you can get a 11 beer sampler! or a 5 beer sampler of 5oz samples. This place really is a pub that has to be owned or in huge partnership with Coeur D'alene brewing company. The beers I tried were: *Pumpkin Ale, Huckleberry Ale, *Vanilla Bourbon Stout, Scottish Ale, Lakeside British Ale. All good my favorites have and * next to them. I will update this with more review when we eat here.

It's the type of place you'd really like to like more: it's a converted power plant that's been transformed into a restaurant. They've cut out the center part of the pipes and made a downstairs bar with seating upstairs. It's a pretty nice tour where you get to see the parts of the old plant, although surprisingly it's a little hard to appreciate from where the tables are. I agree with the other reviews on this point: the food is fine, but overpriced. The food is really more-or-less Sysco's greatest hits: not that it's bad, but you're paying a premium to sit in a power station. For example, the fish and chips are fine, but you can get the same quality for less than $16.95 elsewhere. The chili bowl is really worth trying though. Service was prompt and friendly. I think it's probably worth doing if you're visiting Spokane for the novelty factor, but I couldn't see this as a regular dining destination.

Most of the yelpers have it right PRO: Great historic location Neat History Great pool tables (probably the best in Spokane) Good beer Service at the bar is good Drinks are decently priced CONS Food is overpriced and average to below average Service in the restaurant is spotty This is a place I would for a nice atmosphere and a good beer but I would never eat there again. The prices rival some of the finer restaurants in Spokane while the quality is that of a chili's or Applebee's with a disgruntled cook. This is probably the biggest shame in Spokane because the concept could really be great if they could just get the food together. 5 stars for beer / pool tables / ambiance 1.5 stars for food so I gave it three stars

Meh.....let's start with the service since that's what was excellent here. I had a dinner with 15 and we had one very preggo server who was awesome. The food...meh. It wasn't terrible but it wasn't great either. The restaruant itself was pretty huge and impressive. Looks like a good place to have a wedding rehearsal dinner; I think the menu has a little something for everyone and is definitely a hit if you have a beer drinking crowd.

It's true--the food is not the most memorable, although not that bad for pub food. I recommend the fish and chips, and my husband couldnt' get enough of the cole slaw. But it's the surroundings (and the beer-oh, the beer) that makes this place. The building is fascinating--an old steam plant that has been wonderfully restored, and they've got a cozy little bar in the basement w/ pool tables and foosball. But it is the beer--and one in particular--that made this worth the trip. The Vanilla Bourbon Stout is absolutely delicious. We had plenty at the grill, then took two growlers to go. I even used some to make some delicious chili later on, and the flavors were perfect. highly recommended if you're looking for a beer in a location with some character.

We were in Spokane for a wedding and Steam Plant was one of the few places I had been before. Took two friends along and everyone was totally impressed. The huckleberry iced tea was just beyond wonderful. I had the shrimp/artichoke pasta and when the beautifully presented bowl arrived, it was all I could do to not just put my face in the bowl. The service was amazing! Iced tea glasses never reached the I've been talking about our meal there for the entire week since we got home. Would love to go back. Wish we lived closer so we could go often! Five stars are not enough!

  • Anna N.

Man, that was some good beer! I've tried a lot of fruit beers, but their huckleberry really tasted like huckleberry. And the special porter is amazing! The only food I had was the cheesy bread app and it was also delicious. Since we sat at the bar we also tried their rotating tap which happened to be jalapeno ale. Not my style, but points for originality! The building itself is really cool. I would totally plan a private party there just to sit in the boiler room!

I've only been visiting brewpubs for a little over 2 years, but I've almost been to 70, so take my opinions as you will... The building is very unique and interesting. The restaurant sets in a retired electricity plant with giant steam stacks on the roof. And as I'm sure you can imagine, an old steam electricity plant gives plenty of room for seating. In fact, there are two levels, both are open, spacious, and gorgeously decorated. Outstanding. Lunch featured a Monte Cristo with blueberry dipping sauce, which was perfectly battered and pan fried. The brunch favorite had a light and golden exterior with a warm and gooey interior and no grease to speak of. It was so good, I even came back for dinner. I ordered an macadamia nut crusted halibut. Both meals were a bit pricey, but well worth it in my opinion! Owned and operated by the Coeur D'Alene Brewing Company, the Steam Plant Grill still brews its own beers on the premises. The beer was also outstanding. The entire selection is good, but the best were the Pumpkin Ale (light in color and body) the Scotch Ale (disguised by calling it an amber), Golden Ale, Huckleberry Ale, and Lakeside British Ale (a nut brown). With so many great selections, you have to try a sampler to really decide. And even then, it's still very difficult to choose! After a third visit, here are some thoughs. Pale Ale, Lakeside British Ale, and Pullman Porter all well above average brews, with the Lakeside bordering on excellence. Had a piece of Huckleberry Cheesecake (the dessert of the day) and was absolutely blown away. I haven't had a piece of cheesecake that sweet, rich and creamy while still being fluffy and twangy since I last visited New York. More details for this brewpub and others at: kingsbrewpubtour.com

The conversion from a steam/electricity plant to grill/pub was beautifully executed. I was truly thrilled when we arrived and couldn't wait to get inside. The space is well used, airy with a nice mix of old/new. The owners should be very proud of their work and the awards it's won. The service was excellent and informative on the beer selection (very important!). They have a wide range of Coeur d'Alene Brewing Company beers -I tried the Honeymoon Wheat Ale (a hefewiesen), the huckleberry and the Lakeside- along with the usual suspects like bud, etc. Speaking of beer: when you find your favorite flavor they can send you home with a 'growler' - 1/2 gallon old fashion jug- or keg for that matter. To eat I the fish and chips which was excellent. My fellow drinkers/dinners enjoyed their meals, but rated them in the 'good' range, not amazing or outstanding. All and all we had a great night. The atmosphere and excellent beer gives it ++ stars for the experinece. I'll be back when I'm out east again.

  • Linda B.

The ambiance of this place is wonderful and very unique, but sad to say that the only reason I would return aside from that would be for the beer, garlic cheesy bread, and the fish and chips. We were there to celebrate Graduation and none of us liked our main dishes, and everyone at our table ordered something different! From the salmons, to the Pasta Carbonara, to the Halibut- It was just plain tasteless and disappointing. Not sure what has happened to the original chefs, but we were unhappy to have paid so much money for below-average meals. So sorry to have to leave this review, but just have to be honest! Stick to beer and fish n chips and you'll probably be okay. Service was wonderful though- a definite + on that.

  • Tom S.

It's been about three years since I've been here. The last trip was so bad I have no desire to ever return. The food was cold and boring and the waiter totally screwed me over on a gift card. When I brought the matter to the attention of the manager he said he would look into it but nothing was ever done. I even showed him my bill and receipt as proof. Since then the place has stopped serving lunch. I guess when you lose your customer base you can't maintain extra hours. This place would not be missed by Spokane if it ever closed it's doors

This place is exactly what Spokane needs... rehabing an old classic building and installing a beautiful, open restaurant with stylish loft style offices surround. The food is pretty good too.

  • nate s.

The insides of this place are just enormous in that this was probably an industrial building at one time before they gutted the place and made it into a modern looking loft with tons of tables inside, a bar in the very basement, and some pretty nice indoor views. There's no way that they could ever have a shortage of space. That being said, they somehow failed to acquire on of the 30-50 parking lots around downtown Spokane, and trying to find nearby parking is definitely a hassle. The food is above average but nothing spectacular, mostly American type grub focusing on NW specialties. They do have their own beer brewed for them by the cor d'lene brewing company. They offer a cheap alternative to getting another keg of bud or coors or one of those other fizzy yellow drinks. Great place for groups.

Came in for time since I have lived here. It was a beautiful place but wad not impressed with the food. I ordered a specialty burger only to receive it over cooked and dry. I was not charged for my meal, which was nice. The mixed-drinks were very good. Overall, I would not recommend this place, you're better off going to Twigs or Raw within the same area.

This place is all about the location. It is built inside of a restored steam plane with two giant smokestacks. They did an excellent job of keeping much of the original feel of the plant while working in the restaurant. It is also about two short blocks from the Davenport Hotel so it is an easy walk. As for the food, acceptable but somewhat overpriced. The beer is actually quite good. Try a few of their brews. Anyone visiting Spokane should plan on one dinner here, especially if you are staying at the Davenport Hotel.

Nothing to get too excited over. The place itself is sweet, but the food is usual burger and nice salad...I think you can get pizzas here too...maybe I'm wrong...anyway, its nothing to get excited over.

The best thing about this restaurant is not the food. The historic building in which its located, however, is spectacular and has been beautifully restored. I only wish the dining experience could have lived up to its surroundings. On my first visit here a girlfriend and I were seated downstairs on the first level where it's very dark. I actually fell into the booth at which we were seated because I couldn't see that there was a step up into it. After placing our order, I felt something crawling on my arm, looked down and saw a good-sized flying beetle (if there is such a thing). I was startled and nearly jumped out of the booth. The second time I ate here was with my father. I do recall a young staff notice us walk in and act as if we weren't standing at the front desk for a good 10 minutes waiting to be seated. We nearly left. It's sad that I can't comment on the food, but I honestly can't remember it.
