Pretty typical of most Spokane Mexican restaurants. The food is below average, greasy tasteless and slow to appear from the kitchen. Fill the plate with canned refried beans and rice cooked with tomatoes and viola, instant taste of mexico - NOT. On top of the poor food the bathrooms were dirty and the wait staff was slow and unpleasant. They kept disappearing out back for smoke breaks, very unprofessional.

the food is way better than a lot of the other mexican food in spokane. the people are a lot nicer too. i live on the other side of town and find el sombrero worth the drive.

Worst Mexican food I've ever had!! The salsa is basically tomato paste with some onions in it. The margaritas were all mix and NO tequila. To top it off, this was on Cinco de Mayo and they were not serving blended margs whasoever - on the rocks only and in plastic budweiser cups (super classy). I ordered their special tequila lime shrimp burrito which issupposed to be the best thing on the menu and it was awful. I like mushrooms, but this burrito basically had nothing but mushrooms in it and maybe 3 pieces of shrimp (not whole ones). If you're looking foe good Mexican food and good margaritas stay far away from this place!

I don't know why Yelp filtered all the reviews with real feed back from people who have been here more than once. As someone who understands statistics their filter is flawed.

I read the reviews but decided to try this place anyway. We pulled in and there was not one car in the parking lot. Guess we should have taken that as a sign, but then again it was 9pm on a Saturday and Spokane was dead. The salsa looked like others said- ketchup. It wasn't ketchup per-say, but it tasted similar and had a similar consistency. We ordered pico de gallo, and that was pretty good. The service was slow and we were the only ones in the restaurant.... The meal was just kinda piled up on the plate and not very visually pleasing. We ordered arroz con pollo and it tasted pretty good. Nothing special. Could have ordered the same dish at an Azteca for the same price. However, there was limited amount of shredded chicken piled on top of the plate. Would have given them 3 stars, but the food took a while. We also used a groupon so I guess it's not too bad for a $15 chicken entree, pico de gallo, and a margarita since we only paid $10 for the groupon. In conclusion, there is slow service for average food. The staff is nice enough. The restaurant is also off the main streets of town and it took us a little while to find it at night.

You can't drink enough Coronas with lime or salted Margaritas to make any food offered here palatable. This is the worst place in Spokane for Mexican food. I would recommend a fast food taco bar before eating here.

Hamburger in a chile relleno. Uh, no. The rest of the meal was o.k., a little too much melted cheese on the other entree but truth be told, it was almost totally average. Maybe it was an off night; service was good, my drink was strong and when I laughed out loud at the burger relleno it was removed from the bill. I will try again because I live so close. Maybe some pork tacos would be ok.

awful! We went because we had the entertainment book coupon! The sauces were yucky --literally. I could hardly eat the arroz con pollo which was supposed to be a specialty. We tried something new and were extremely dissapointed.

Had their tacos with retried beans and rice. I think they're trying to get the food and waiting on tables up to an exceptible standard but they have a bit more work to do on both. The draft beer is good.

I will start out by saying 1 star is VERY generous. THE GOOD: chips were pretty good, and the selection of hot pepper sauces is fun. That is about it for the good. THE BAD: I am a very particular eater when it comes to cooking. For me, deciding between beef burrito and fajitas is tough if you are not sure about the cook. I asked if they have a good seasoned cook. YES was the answer, so fajitas it is. I order them extra extra extra (xxx) WELL, murdered, and some black on them is good, and tell the cook, if they think they are done, they probably aren't, on the veggies. They forgot about that, and veggies were warmed raw. Less cooked by far than most places regular. (Not what I asked for, and for me, I hate raw "warmed" veggies.) Dinner come with rice and beans, and I asked to turn the beans into rice. I got rice only, about a 1/4 cup. My wife ordered the chicken chimi. She said "it is ALL BEANS," and it was until 1/2 way through, then, it turned into all chicken. She wasn't impressed. The UGLY: Salsa is like tomato paste, with chunks of garlic (yuck). I have never seen salsa like this, AND you get a little silver dollar sized thing, about 3/4 full. (Smallest amount I have ever seen). The server said she normally doesn't do this, So cutting her some slack, but terrible service. NO water, or silverware, but she corrected that. More UGLY: couple behind us, took awhile to get served, and I seen their food sit in the window for at least 10 minutes. Another couple got all you can eat tacos. 30 minutes to get them, they kept looking at the kitchen. Then a 4 topper Sat for 20 minutes, and they just up and left.some softball gals came in and set down, and waited on themselves for drinks, chips, and salsa. We wanted out of here because of a table with loud and louder laughing and bad experience. Had a buy one, get one free coupon. Told her twice, I had it, 1st time when we came, and after flagging her down to tell her we wanted our ticket. Ticket came at full price, and I showed her again. She said she would take care of it, and gave her my credit card. Then she came back, and said credit card machine was broken. Waited 15 minutes for that, and she came back with my receipt, credit card charged full amount, and 11$ cash to offset the 11.25 free meal. I took the additional 1$ from sales tax off the tip. Sorry server. WRAPUP: as a previous restaurant owner I kinda know what I am talking about. THIS IS A MANAGEMENT nightmare.

New ownership! Inside update is great. Service and food quality has diminished. No longer my favorite Mexican food in town. sad. :(

Five stars...from two people from California? Are you KEEDING me? I happened upon this place while waiting for my friend's film to develop at Walmart (I live downtown and avoid the Northside at all costs usually). From northbound, the sign projects the image of a small Mom & Pop (MOPO from here on out) Mexican dive that may give you some a little dose of minor food-borne illness. In other words: just what we were looking for. Not the case. This seems like a bland Family Restraunt/Sports Bar combo that just happens to serve "Mexican" food. I'm not sure what "authentic" Mexican food even is really....but it is certainly NOT this. I mentioned in a previous review that the food was like what Mexican food in Canada must be like...well...this is what having Mexican food in Whales must be like. We got all you can eat tacos (maybe that was our mistake)...and...you have to painfully go to a shoddy hot-food "bar" and make them yourself. This sucks for two reasons: 1) It's incredibly tedious to make your own tacos, you gotta open and close all sortsa lids and use WHO KNOWS HOW MANY UTENSILS! 2) The quality of ingredients took me back to my elementary school cafeteria in central Florida: govmt cheese ice burg lettuce (most pointless food ever, not even good for an iguana) canned olives soggy and/or dry tortillas It's not that the tacos were "TERRIBLE" they were just...well, the tacos my parents (from Wisconsin) prepare SLAY these ones. About the one star: I was a bit reluctant, but having given Azteca a 2-star, this place just BEGS to get one star. Some good stuff: - waitress was very friendly and nice - they had a wide array of exotic hot sauces (grapefruit habanero?!) that were very, very tasting for this here capsaicin addict BEST MEXICAN FOOD IN SPOKANE IS STILL EASILY AND HANDILY: DE LEONS EDIT: I forgot to mention: THE SALSA IS JUST SPICY KETCHUP WITH CHUNKS OF ONION IN IT...GROSS.

We have been on a search in Spokane /Idaho areas to find good Mexican food since moving from California. Despite reviews we decided to try El Sombreo for chips and salsa and margaritas. The chips were good, the salsa was weird like someone else said, catsup with garlic in a tiny flat tray. I would not call it salsa. The margaritas were very good and on special for Monday. We talked to the friendly owners for a while, I mentioned about writing reviews for yelp, which got a reply of " I don't believe in those reviews, it's other restaurants writing bad things about us. I asked why they don't have any pork items on the menu, I got the reply " it doesn't sell". We ordered a half of the nachos, which would be a whole order elsewhere, it was loaded with lots of cheese, ground beef , guacamole and sour cream and lots of salt. We ate a few bites but it got very heavy very quick. I don't think based on those nachos that I would come back for food. I really wish that this place would have that menu that would be different from all the others. This is not the same Spokane it was ten years ago. Restaurants need to update the menus to offer different items than the others. I want me some succulant pork carnitas.

Burritos & crunchy tacos are great. $1 beers on Friday nights & $5 off the fajitas. Small place with great waitstaff, but the kitchen is slow. Overall not a bad little place!

I used to like this place a lot more when I could order from them when I go to the ale house next door. I will probably not be back after the last few visits where they seemed to discourage my business. There are several options nearby that I can choose from.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
