If you're a dancer or a whiskey drinker or both, The Little Red Hen is basically heaven. I recommend any night with a live band (which is five nights a week, friends).

Great live Honky Tonk music in Seattle!! Love swing dancing at the hen. But be warned karake night is HORRIBLE. Every other night is great.

Decent dive bar. Good feel when ur into that hole-in-the-wall style or country music. Sunday's suck tho. The dance instructor is a straight "C U Next Tuesday" type of girl. Any other day from Sunday, get rdy to have a good time. CHEERS!!!

Went here on a Wednesday from a friend's recommendation and had a blast! I love this little country bar. Wednesday happy hour is 1$ beers and they also have karaoke. Great mix of people too! As an avid line dancer I was slightly disappointed there wasn't much of any line dancing happening :/

I love dive bars, so I feel at home here. The people and staff are super friendly. I've come here a couple times over the years on Saturdays and on a Tuesday for the FREE dance lessons. I've yet to experience the karaoke here however. The live music is great, acoustics aren't terrible, dance floor is nice, booths are perfectly sized and the crowd makes you feel relaxed. I was asked to dance and there are some amazing & polite gentlemen that can surely dance! This place is perfect for a crowd and yes, it is good yet tasteful country music that they play. I haven't been to many places like it and I enjoy myself here.

I love this place. I used to come here every week for their free line dancing lessons and always had a blast! Sometimes I would stay for Karaoke and I remember this one guy getting up there to sing on a weekly basis. He sounded like Dead Martin! I also love that the staff is very kind and gets to know you. I used to order there Cobb Salad a lot, because it was so good! Give this place a shot!

Gone n' dunnit! I found Mecca. I'm really not sure how I managed to live in Seattle my entire life and never go to The Little Red Hen until last night. I am forever changed. First of all - it turns out line dancing is my calling. It's what's been missing in my life. Second of all, the nicest bartender ladies in the world. Third of all, friendliest wackadoo bar crowd in Seattle. And finally, an entire night of drinkin' and dancin' and I only spent $20. Now, if that ain't somethin', I don't know what.

Haha. Not my scene but pretty fun. I'm from LA and TLRH was my first experience at a country bar... all that said I actually had a lot of fun. The only reason my rating is so low is that I had a pretty crappy experience with the staff. The guy at the door was not nice at all. I arrived at 7:55 and although they start charging a cover at 8 I had to pay anyway followed by being told about a milllion times by every person on the staff not to bring my drink out to the dance floor... (which at this time I didn't even have a drink) The bartender was alright but not too welcoming either. I think it could have been a lot more fun, but I wish I would have had a better experience with the people there.

I keep wanting to buy booze from these guys but they always act like it is this insane hassle. Go to the Smoke Shop in Ballard :D

The friendly people, live music, and dancing are my favorite things about this great place. The partner dance lessons on Sundays and Tuesdays are great for learning the basics. Bring your own partner or just show up and find a partner. Everyone is friendly and the dance instructor makes it fun and easy to learn. Spend the rest of the evening dancing to great live music. I like the fact that people are not shy to ask each other to dance. If you don't like random people approaching you all night, this might not be the place for you. I've been coming here regularly for the last 2 months, and I'm learning the different personalities of the place. Sundays and Tuesdays seem to bring out the dancers. Everybody I dance with is experienced or eager to learn. Fridays and Saturdays bring the younger bar crowd who want to hang out with their friends and listen to the great music. I had a great time taking the line dance lesson on a Monday night, but the karaoke, DJ, and lack of a crowd wasn't my kind of fun. The food I've had here has been great and the portions generous. Once the crowd starts to show up, you will want to go to the bar to order your food and drinks. The staff won't be coming to you to take your order. I love this place on the live music nights, and I will be a regular here for a long time.

I love everything about this place; except they charge $2.00 for a cup of coffee during prime drinking time. That should be free. Who at a bar, charges for a cup of joe? Asides from that there is NO where else to find a slice of country in the city like this. Put on your dancing shoes and saddle up because when you go here, don't think you're sitting alone. Someone is gong to ask you to dance. A little piece of country in the city, good music, good dancing, good times.

If I could rate is a negative 5 star - I would. DO NOT EVER GO HERE! The owner of this place is INCREDIBLY rude beyond belief. I have never met someone who was more hostile, rude, and inconsiderate as the people who own and work here. There's this dispute between the LIttle Red Hen and the newly build Shelter Lounge (which is AWESOME by the way)...and they feel like the Shelter Lounge is taking business away from them, and they are projecting their anger towards anyone and everyone. I made the grave mistake of parking in their lot (which wasn't nearly marked) and they put a BOOT on my car (like a bike chain wire and a BUCKET). When I went into the establishment to tell them that it was an honest mistake to park there (I thought it was the Shelter Lounge's parking, since it's right adjacent to the building), they cussed me out and demanded I pay $50 "cash" or I couldn't get out. I said hey, I understand let me buy a drink so I can be your "patron", they refused service and said "I am not getting out that easily". I seriously felt threatened at this point. Because of this indecent interaction, I ended up having to call the cops. Before the cops arrived, the owner moved his car to completely block me into the parking lot (WHO DOES THAT?) and almost ran over me. WOW. When the cops came (2 hours later) they finally made one of the workers remove the chain (which by the way, what they did was COMPLETELY ILLEGAL). I honestly cannot believe that this establishment is still operating...Please do yourself a favor and do not come here. Like ever.

This is supposed to be the Country bar in Seattle. The girl behind me asked the bouncer where his cowboy outfit was, as he looked like he was working behind a cubicle more than anything else. She wasn't being a smart ass, but trying to strike up friendly conversation with the bouncer in a jokingly way. He denied her access into the bar without telling her why. After talking to her about, the, we figured it was because she acted silly and intentionally ask a stupid question. It was meant to make the guy smile. He was a total prick about it. Judging by the other poor reviews, it seems like the whole place has a stick up their a$$. No thanks. I can go into burbs for a real shitkicking bar instead of this poser place.

Classic Seattle dive with live music. I hope this place never goes away, but it's quickly being surrounded by new development. Come for the cheap drinks, stay for the karaoke and country swing.

Let me start with the fact I love this place. The food, service and entertainment is usually amazing! Tonight, the food is what fell short. Our waitress was a major trooper and sweetheart. The kitchen was a travesty tonight. I ordered fried chicken with a baked potato. I got chicken tenders with French fries and a very under done potato (not the first time my baked potato here came out under done over the last three visits here). I also ordered a Caesar salad for my dinner salad and got a chicken Caesar salad (dressing on the side). The nachos our friends got didn't have cheese and the drinks started coming out wrong. Bless our poor server. She was so awesome and forgiving.

Just stopped by for a couple drinks with a friend. . Amazing place. . Staff and customers were very welcoming. . Drinks were very affordable and so was the food very large portions for a bar. I love all the space and seating. .

This review is just for the karaoke portion. Service was fine they all were nice but the karaoke was sub par. The dj was sooooo slow you could have fit another singer in between his back room breaks. Also, 45 min dance off. I waited 2 and a half hours for one song. The last hour there were only a few people in the bar. Just don't say its karaoke night when it's really dance and let the dj rap night. Worst karaoke dj in Seattle.

Love this bar! So glad they finally made the dance floor bigger and Maryanne does a great job sun-tues teaching dances catering to everyone. Would have given it more stars but they recently changed the menu and you get a lot less quality food for higher prices. Sad day. Probably won't eat here again especially when there aren't tater tots anymore and fries are $5 for a side order.

This place is a total dive bar but if that is what I'm in the mood for then I'm okay with that and it can be fun. The music here is always slightly too loud, the place is a total dump and my biggest complaint is the bartender. My girlfriends and I go here every Monday for our own personal "ladies night" and the bartender is this short, round, brunette who is so rude!!! If you pay for your drink and don't open a tab she rolls her eyes at you and gives you some snark about how you better not come back for a second. She refuses to crack a smile or strike up a conversation. How

Great place for live music, heavy drinks, dancing and karaoke. The crowed is different every night too, other then the regulars. The staff is also very friendly, but don't piss them off. :) And if you're looking for dance lessons, their dance instructor is great! Wednesdays are much different. College crowed. The DJ is a nice guy but if you don't tip, he won't play your song. We showed up around 10 and put in out song. Watched the same group of girls and guys sing 3 or 4 times before we finally got our song. Pay him and you'll have a better chance of getting your song in. He will pick and choose. Doesn't matter when you put your song in.

It was my first time going to a country bar/ dance bar and I had an AMAZING time. Live music, lots of people dancing and cheap drinks. What more could I ask for. I definitely recommend this place for any country lover or people that just love to dance.

Fun little country/dive bar in Greenlake. Had never been here and not a huge dancer, but went for a friend's birthday party and had a good time. I will admit to bowing out of the dancing fairly quickly (no idea what I'm doing, two left feet, etc). Beers seem cheap, pull tabs, plenty of places to sit. What's not to like?

Moving to Seattle from Atlanta in next 45 days and gave four stars for the simple fact that there is a country bar in the city. Looking forward to checking it out.

Great music, good vibes, and awesome dancing. The Little Red Hen doesn't disappoint. The bartender was friendly and it never felt like you had to wait long to get your order. Went on a Thursday and the dance floor was packed. I'm no two-stepper, but had a good time learning a little. Just as much fun watching the regulars bust a move!

This $#!&ing bar. Austin is absolutely the $hit. He defines service with a smile and is professional and knowledgeable. Aside from that staffing note, this bar has multiple personality disorder. Family friendly restaurant by day, divey little country bar by night, karaoke and college kids on Wed, live bands most of the weekend. Crowd varies widely, so plan ahead!

If you're looking for a good time and good country music this is definitely the place to be. Good drinks, cool people and overall a great experience. If you're not looking looking for a country bar (ninette c.) then I suggest you walk to another nearby bar.

Love this place, great little country bar in the heart of green lake (funny combination but it works!) I love country so this was a great find for me a few years ago, you can wear your boots and line dance to your hearts delight! They have live music most nights and free lessons before 8PM... Lots of fun folks but my one qualm would be the music when the band is not playing, there is tons of great current country that they do not play (Eric Church, Jake Owen, Dierks Bentley to name a few)... it would really get rocking with some different tunes but it is a blast either way! Decor is country and the bartenders are usually nice even though it is super slammed... Usually get beers and hit the dance floor sans drink(s)... $5 cover most live music nights, decent street parking near by, right above GLake B & Grill... Have NOT tried their food!

So went back to the LRH again Sunday and Monday..Sunday the guy at the door took 5 dollars instead of the posted 3 for our cover ...was gonna question it but he offered me no change from the 10 I gave him..figured it musta changed.. The davenos...thought they were great musicians but the drummer was drunk I thought, they took several breaks and very long ones..when they came back...in between him motoring his mouth between songs and propping himself up,the song selections were random all over the place and not entertaining at least to us...very unprofessional behavior thru the whole evening... Monday I came back by myself...love to sing karaoke but seemed the DJ was more interested in honing his mix skills as he played long sets of current dance music which did invite semi dance/head bobbers to the floor..and interspersing some karaoke in between..if they are going to advertise as a karaoke night please let's do karaoke...I own my own DJ/karaoke company and just wanted to hear and sing karaoke... I've been here before mostly on nights when there are country groups and it is a great place for that... The bartender is very efficient and nice...would go back especially if she's there...she's sweet... The bouncer not so...think he pocketed the other 4 bucks...

Excellent service with a sometimes eclectic menu, I stopped in after a massage/facial in the area and I was not disappointed with my late lunch. My side salad was massive and my homemade onion rings were plentiful. I chose a hamburger steak with grilled mushrooms and onions with creamy mash and gravy. There was a LOT of food. Had I known the onion rings were so many, I would have skipped it. I ended up bringing half of my main dish home for dinner later. Country music and stiff drinks with a healthy dollop of people-watching as the place began to fill up. I had fun and would return easily with friends to split some apps and drink.

The bouncers made aggressice comments. They where borderline sexist....and I don't day that lightly. When I asked for their manager they said there wasnt one site. Liars.

This review is based solely on the divey karaoke bar it becomes after hours. I guess I had no idea how close to the UW campus this place was. I cannot stand establishments packed with frat boys and sorority girls. That's just what this place is. I've never gotten in any altercations or anything, I've just never had any fun. It's really small, cramped, and it smells weird. Not my kind of place. It's one of those places you take your friends that just turned 21 for their bar run. Not my style. It's a little too carefree for my like. On multiple occasions I've been over-charged for my drink. The little "DAILY SPECIALS" board clearly says "$4 wells", but I end up getting charged $7 for a pineapple vodka.

This review is only for the breakfast food, not the dancing or karaoke or anything like that, which I want to go back for in the future. So we were in the area early on a Saturday morning waiting for Greggs Bike shop to open and decided to look up local breakfast we could walk to... well there was the Little Red Hen so we were like OK! He got the chicken fried steak and I got the logo moco. It was just ok... not anything great, kind of a gut bomb really. The server was soooo nice, loved the gal. And she was honest not to get the corn beef hash because it comes from a can... ewwww. I did like the ambience, as it was very Urban Cowboy like :) Great service, not so great food. Like I said, I will return for dancing and music etc.

Nothing to do on Turkey Day? Not feeling like staying in on Xmas? Then The Little Red Hen is for you! Not many businesses are open during the holidays, but this music bar usually has something going on when every place else is closed. On Xmas Day, we made it down here to check out some two-steppin' & country from Knut Bell and The Blue Collars. Man, this band rocked the house, and couples invaded the dance floor with abandon. The bar is cool. There are booths along a wall. There are a few bars if you want to just saddle up and imbibe the scenery from a tall stool. There is a room in the back if it's too crowded in the front for you. If you want to watch the game, they have several TVs through out. The servers and barkeeps were cool and fast. If you want to do the usual hipster thing and buy a round of canned PBRs, that's certainly an option. All in all, this establishment epitomizes coolness. See ya there during the next holiday! (and don't forget to polish them boots!)

Fun place to go for dancing and good live music. Place to kick back and have a nice time. Definitely not fancy but not trying to be either. Great events the last Tuesday of every month which is when I try to go. Dance class starts at 8pm, music at 9pm. So much fun.

Best Sunday breakfast in Roosevelt/Greenlake. 11 different kinds of Eggs benedict! It's dark and dank inside the bar, but they serve their drinks strong and their breakfasts huge. Erwin is a great cook back there!

This is no fancy pants gourmet spot, but it's not trying to be... and it's a good place to chill out with a beer and some standard bar eats near Green Lake. I hear it can get much louder and crazier when there's a live show going on, but I've (thankfully- because it's not my kind of thing) never been there at such a time. The first time I came here, I was craving a burger. Sadly I was craving a veggie burger, and they don't have those. I was craving a burger badly enough, however, that I decided to have the beef one. It wasn't fabulous or bad. It was good enough, and pretty much what I expected to find at a neighborhood cowboy-ish bar. The second time I came here was for a beer with a friend after finding a happy hour meal elsewhere. Most of the other customers were much older than me, but they were all having a good time and plenty of them seem very chatty and up for an amusing conversation. Good times!

Here is the deal: The Little Red Hen is old, it smells, its a country bar, there are slightly creepy elderly gentlemen hanging out but it is a grand hillbilly time. I must commend The Little Red Hen on their food. You can even get Chinese food there if you so please. I had the tuna melt (scrumptious) and my fellow had the fish and chips (delightful). The tarter sauce that came with it was homemade, fresh, and tasty. You could have put a straw in it and I would have happily drank it. I must mention the tater tots. They have tater tots! Yes. The best thing about The Little Red Hen is the country western dance lessons. Get off your high horse about dancing especially to honkey tonk but it is so fun and departure from my normal activities. The woman that teaches is quite through and is not afraid of pointing out people that do well and not so well all in a humorous way. Even if you can't get the steps down as long as you are moving she is satisfied as well as the crowd because if you are stagnant the wave of swinging couples will get you back on track. Speaking of which there are the cutest old couples in western get-up dancing like they did back in their hayday. So sweet. Go kick your heels up and get some damn tarter sauce.

OH little red hen! Went here on a Saturday night, decided it was the bar where old men hit on young girls. Huge range of ages from gray hairs to 20-somethings. I dislike country music, but they had a live band singing original songs (for the most part, there was some johnny cash in there for good measure), so that made it tolerable. The liquor made it enjoyable! Drinks were strong--my long island was not great but full of booze as it should be, so who can complain?! No drinks on the dance floor though so plan wisely if you wanna dance! I was skeptical at first, but after a few drinks, this place was very fun!

Ok look, this place is *country!* It must be the most country spot in Seattle. I came with a group after our other Greenlake spot didn't work out. My boyfriend told me it was country. I wasn't excited, but what was I supposed to do? Get in the car and leave? They charged us $3 cover, which surprised me because this did not seem like a cover kind of spot to me. As soon as we walked in, I was blasted by country music and TONS of people (it was a Thursday night.) t was a scene straight out of "Sweet Home Alabama." A man old enough to be my grandfather grabbed my arm and asked me if I wanted to dance. I pulled my arm away and looked horrified while my girlfriends laughed. They only have one bar and bartender, but she dealt with the crowd very well. They did have $4 tequila shots which I gratefully accepted. They have live music which is great...if you like country music. If you are a country boy or girl living in Seattle and missing home, this is for you. If you, like me, like heels, dresses, "Sweet Home Alabama" as a romantic comedy only and/or are a city boy/girl, you should probably skip this one. Maybe its good as far as country bars go. I've never been to any other ones, so I won't give it one star. It just wasn't my thing.

Before coming here, I asked my boyfriend for a description. He explained that this was as close to a Texan bar as you can get in Seattle. He said that it was the loveliest kind of place, where on any given night, there is usually either karaoke or dance lessons, frequently followed by a great band. He also said that it was the kind of place where you go to drink Shiner Bock, and the second you put your date down from dancing, a non-creepy fifty-year-old man in cowboy boots will offer to dance with your date. I believed him for the most part, excepting the last. I just had a hard time believing that such a place existed (though I certainly hoped it did.) I was wrong (in the best kind of way.) He was EXACTLY right! We drank Shiner Bock. We danced. And even though it was the busiest of nights, and we were sitting in the smallest corner FAR away from the dance floor, the second we sat down, a non-creepy fifty year old man wearing cowboy boots asked me if I needed another beer, and if I would like to dance. It was charming. The band was fantastic, and it was an experience I will never forget. This bar is great. I love it, and I will be a loyal patron for as long as I am in Seattle.

If you're a completely wired hipster used to a crowd where the women wear stilettos and burrito tight near-gownless-evening-straps, then this place is probably not for you. The people here are from all sorts of places & are not pretentious. I hear that this is a place for swilling down bud lights and grabbing the mike for some serious Karaoke on certain nights. Don't know. I like women on achingly-high stilettos and short skirts. I come here for one thing: the burgers and the homemade fries. It's greasy spoons for me all the way. Love their blue cheese burgers, the piece of cow in it, the sauces and those fries. There's a great selection of burgers here, so plan ahead. I prefer to eat this type of burger without the use of my hands. Just prop up the burger, and drop my face straight in. Dr. Oz would love this because people like him would profit from my aeortic catheter later on.

Lookin' for a rootin' tootin' good time?! This place definitely will give that to you. I came here for a girlfriends birthday (which just so happened to fall on a Wednesday) and I was expecting the place to be dead...boy was I wrong. Very cool atmosphere, and the decor stays true to the country "honky tonk" bar theme they have here. The security guys were friendly when we first walked in, and very inviting. I love, love, LOVE the fact that there is such a wide variety of people here and that everyone has a great time, plus, I didn't think there would be so many people!! Clearly it is the place to be! Karaoke, drinks, country music, good times...they even have square dancing lessons! Lets just say that my first time, was an amazing time. My friend had a great birthday, and my boyfriend and I have found a new place for us to take friends, and for us to go and learn how to square dance! So grab your boots, hat, and put on your daisy dukes- or wranglers whichever you prefer and get on down to the Little Red Hen!

I didn't think dancing to country music could have been as fun as it was; but this is the place to be on a Saturday night! The live music and the swing dancing was well-worth the $5 cover. It would have been five stars if not for the rude bartender and the basic drink menu. Then again, I guess I might just be asking too much~ Definitely go with someone who knows how to dance, you will have a great time!

I was having a great time at this place. Until the singer for the band cried out "white power!" The night was Saturday 5/21/11. I completely ruined our night. I will make sure that NO ONE I know ever comes here, ever. This is 2011. And that was offensive. They can say whatever they want because it is a free country, but I wont pay money to support it and I will make sure my friends don't either. If you just kept your mouth shut you wouldn't be losing business.

The Little Red Hen is the only place I've found that has Great "live Music" every night except Monday and Wednesday, when they do Karaoke....Most of the Bands play "Classic Country" like Buck Owens....hardly ever play the current Radio plays...thank goodness! ......which I do not consider "Country anymore".....Give me "George Jones" or Marty Stewart" or the like........so You can bet You will hear "Honky Tonk Music" when you go there to dance! People are Friendly ....the food is good.......but if you like a......... "Huge race track dance floor".........it might not the place for You!....... Check out the Calender: littleredhen.com/pages/c… ...... The "Older Cowboys" do seem to have a good time there.... as most of the "Young Cowboys "Don't Dance".......so check out the Dance Lessons You Guys:...........! littleredhen.com/new-pgs… I Love it! Ten beers later I was on the dance floor! Do you think they were looking at me because of my mad "two-step" skills or the New York Yankee cap in a field of cowboy hats? Not sure, but who cares. I went to this place on a whim. . . maybe a drunken whim. . . and had a great time. The beer was cheap, the crowd was fun and crazy and flash backs of Urban Cowboy ran through my head for days afterward. If you haven't been then you need to try it. If you don't dance or can't dance (as I learned is my handicap) then you can sit at the bar and "people watch." You won't be disappointed.

has potential to be fun if the "servers" weren't such pretentious assholes WOW! WOW!! WOW!!! WOW, WOW!!!!! i go out often and rarely have i ever been treated so poorly!! this being the second most infurriating time. someone needs to put these hateful servers in check. i live and work on the strip in las vegas, at the venetian, at a top rated restaurant; rarely do i get angry enough to complain, but these servers were T.E.R.R.I.B.L.E!!!! if you plan on coming here, despite my poor reviews, rellish in the fact that you won't have to tip since the service is SO shitty!! and that is me being nice!!! very few things piss me off more than bad service, but bad service with a bad attitude REALLY gets my blood boiling!! maybe they should name it the angry red hen? rarely is it acceptable for your server to yell at you and treat you like shit... you ARE workiing for tips afterall..... very disgruntled service industry expert, my advice: "TRY", not even try harder, just TRY!!!! and it doesn't hurt to smile... p.s. where's the half star??! i feel this place barely deserves that!! TERR-I-BLE!!!!

I could never understand why a bar will still charge ladies cover when there is a total of 12 people (staff included) in the entire joint. I mean, really, $5 cover or bar business? Get with it, man! My girlfriends and I never went in...on to the next...

Swing your partner round and round Little Red Hen has got it down. Old men come to dance with chicks Half their age to get their fix. Do si do with your little s*** kickers Eatin chicken fried steak and....pot stickers??? Yes, they serve them. You should experience the Little Red Hen at least once in your life.

Years ago this was a kitschy dive bar for old Green Lake locals. But now it's a little oasis for young hipsters and recently graduated frat dudes. (I have nothing against frat dudes, since I am a frat dude myself.) The place has a great energy to it. Relaxed. Nice customers. Responsive bartenders. Cheep prices -- relative to other Seattle venues. Awesome fun karaoke on Wednesday where people actually dance to the songs. The place is sorta dirty. The bathrooms are a little nasty. The drinks and beer come in plastic cups. But that just reminds me of the frat days. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

We sometimes go to the Little Red Hen on Wednesdays for Karaoke. I haven't been other times so can't speak to the environment other nights, but on Wednesday it is consistently PACKED mostly with young attractive and rowdy UW students. It is a fun karaoke time if you're in the mood for *that* experience. Don't expect service with a smile. Do expect stiff drinks and entertainment.

The Red Hen was fun for the first hour or so, until a "cowboy" claiming to work at the bar (though clearly only a customer at the time) asked myself and my date to get off of the dance floor. Apparently we weren't dancing up to par (we were dancing in place rather than in a giant circle around the dance floor)... My opinion is if I pay $5 cover and am also paying for overly expensive beer, I should be able to swing dance as poorly or as well as I'd like. Especially when the "cowboy" was also a paying customer, at least for the time being. Unfortunately the Red Hen ended up being a less than fun bar for myself and I will not be going back. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else either .. unless you're a great swing dancer or don't mind having your fun time ruined by Red Hen employees.

SAVE A HORSE, RIDE A COWBOY. That's basically the motto here. Countrified debauchery at its' finest. If there was ever a place to get honky, this is it. This is the place. The people are super friendly, the Monday night line-dancing classes (free) are fun (I just watched last night, but I'm determined to try it once), and the karaoke is ...well, karaoke. But country karaoke--so it's pretty dramatic. Good entertainment, even if you don't like country, country bars, country people, or country food (like me). I have enjoyed this place immensely every time we've gone. It's authentically cheesy and a ton of boot-wearin' fun. Do it! You know you're curious.

You already will feel like you are stepping back in time as soon as you see the sign outside of the Little Red Hen. It appears to be the original sign and that is pretty old because my mom went there when she was in her 20s. I love that contradiction - of the old country dive bar right there at Greenlake nestled on the same street as high end running gear stores and new condos. So yes, the Little Red Hen is a country bar dive bar, but really a lot of fun and kitsch and gets all types of people. You have college kids, bachelorette parties, middle agers, and senior citizens. Some are urbans, some suburbans and others look like true cowboys. They have live bands on Friday and Saturday night with a $5 cover. They have a full bar and beers on tap so you can get a Mannys or a Pabst which keeps the diverse crowd happy. It is country so the band is playing country songs, but you always get the cross over songs like ones from The Eagles, CCR, and Linda Ronstadt. When I was there on Saturday, Latigo Lace was playing and they were great. Unfortunately the dance floor is very small and that means usually packed. You have mostly people doing partner dancing such as the two-step and swing dancing. You can free dance too - the couple dancers just navigate around you. But the couple dancing is very fun and they do offer free country dance lessons on Sundays and Tuesdays. They serve food there, but I have never eaten there. The menu is mostly burgers and other typical bar food. Even if you are not a fan of country music this is a fun place and worth checking out.

The little red hen was a little bar about a 5 minute walk from where I lived in Greenlake. I had been invited by a friend to check out the Wednesday night Karaoke, so I thought it might be fun. It was filled with a mixture of cowboys, hipsters, and some normal looking people. I never did get on stage to sing, but for the more brave, it's definitely the thing to do. I just enjoyed listening and watching. Rainiers and I think PBRs were $3, so not too bad, but I would definitely recommend pre-consuming a few of your favorite cervezas before going in. I was really bored on a Saturday night and decided to try it out with a buddy. What a mistake. Completely different crowd! Everyone was cowboy-ed out. I didn't even know there were that many cowboys left, especially in Seattle. I learned my lesson and kept to Wednesdays.

I was so happy to find a little honky tonk bar in Seattle, but it didn't quite live up to my expectations. The female bartender was less than friendly and the dude was only slightly better. Neither one of them looked like they worked at a western bar and neither one of them seemed all together thrilled to be there. I ordered a caesar salad while I waited for the band to start and I believe I waited 45 minutes for my soggy caesar...with eggs on it?? I've never had to tell someone to hold the eggs on a caesar, but oh well. They charged me 2 bucks for a soda water - another pet peeve of mine...it's really not worth 2 bucks. The only redeeming factors were: - good band with people dancing - dude bartender gave me a bar book that people draw in and I spent my time waiting for my salad by drawing pictures - there was one cute guy who is apparently a regular - cute neighborhood

Yeehaw! Country music, whiskey sours, old men dancing like they're 20 again and young girls dressed in cowboy boots and sun-dresses... cool : ) I stopped by here to visit a friend and had a pretty good time. Their prices weren't over the top terrible but not super cheap either, I had my dive bar fall back drink (whiskey sour) and was happy with the ratio. I didn't dance but my model gorgeous friend was asked a few times in the hour or so we were there. It just had a good overall vibe, I'll say this though it was SUPER freaking packed! Almost uncomfortably so and even though I like the random mini bar tables scattered around intermixxed with boothes and free standing high and low tables it seemed pretty cluttered. Kind of like the dance floor is only there sometimes (which I'm sure is the case) and tehy still have no idea what to do with the extra tables. I had a good time and I'll be back : )

We had breakfast at the Hen, right after the Iron Girl 5K. I had the Denver Scrambler and I must say it was one of the best breakfasts I've had in a long time! Service was very slow, but it was explained to us that the kitchen is tiny, so the orders came out 2 at a time. It was worth the wait however - great country potatoes, wheat toast, and the scrambler was filled with fresh veggies & diced ham and loaded with cheddar! Really delicious. My granddaughter had an order of cinnamon apple french toast - we all had a bite or two of hers, it was so good. Apples were cooked fresh. Have not had an opportunity to sample their nite life, but I am now a big fan of their food! We'll be back for sure!

I may have found my new favorite Seattle bar! This place is sweet & like a breath of fresh air if you used to bars full of hipsters. The crowd is super eclectic & non pretentious. Most people are swilling down bud light & the honky tonk is playing loud! Last night I went for a friend's bday and we had a blast. There was a live band which consisted of a bunch of charismatic fellas, the dance floor was packed & the cowboy hats were out in force. It's so nice to know a spot like this exists in Seattle, I can't wait to go back for line dancing & karaoke. Just the people watching alone on a weekend is awesome. Yeehaw! Have yourself a macrobrew & a damn good time! :)

I love coming here on Monday nights. It's busy but not packed, everyone seems super cool, there always seems to be twice as many women as there are guys, and the bartenders pour healthy stiff drinks. My only problem is that the sound system for the karaoke stage has a very high pitch (sometimes painful).

In reading some of these reviews, it might sound like a very different experience for different people, that's because it is. If you go there during the day, there's a different crowd, if you go there any night of the week there is a different vibe started going there because there was a band I liked and then found out I could get dance lessons there too. Personally I'll skip the line dancing, and karaoke college frat infested nights, but Thursday and Sundays might be the nights you could find me there. Each night has it's own following. There are 50 year old (and much older) men asking young women to dance, get over yourselves, the vast majority of them want to do just that. In fact a number of people who have been going there for decades find it rude to turn down an earnest dance request. It's hard for some people to believe but people do go there to dance. People take everyone for the most part at face value. It's another little time capsule of old Seattle. I knew someone whose grandparents met at that bar. Personally I've made some good friends from people I met there, and have even taken trips with some of them. It's a bit like an English pub but everyone is welcome. It's a touchstone for people that have been supporting it for decades, lets hope it doesn't disappear now that the Greenlake hole is being built up again. If you can deal with country music, check it out, you might be surprised. Don't forget to check out the murals.

Never had a bad time here and last night kept the winning streak going... A friend wanted to check it out, since he loves dive bars and hadn't heard about this one. Which amazed me.. I let him know that it was mostly a country bar, which usually isn't his scene, but he wanted go anyways. Ok... Been here mostly on country nights... This time though, when we walked in, it was actually karaoke night AND they were having a pajama party. OH BOY... Luckily only about half of the crowd was in pajamas so we weren't so out of place.. The good thing... I got him to sing karaoke ... Not like he doesn't sing all the time with his band at shows, but I got him to... "Hurt by Johnny Cash".... Love this place and love the crowd that comes.. Great people watching bar.... Usually there is always a mixture of people anywhere from early 20 somethings to older regulars to bikers ... Bartenders are always on top of things, even when the crowd is overwhelming...

Reviewed on fourth visit. People so happy they dance and dance and dance - stranger with stranger, young with old, graceful with me. Free dance lessons provided Sundays at 8:00 for the fumble-feeted. As country as my sweet home (Alabama). Rednecks, white socks and Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer - ya'll come! Order at the bar manned by friendly efficient keeps. Great place to be a regular. Looking forward to fifth trip. (Guess I'm a regular.)

I prefer The Hen's karaoke Wednesdays where everyone from the old-timers to the just-turned-21-ers sing well but don't really care who's listening. The drinks are reasonable in price and strength, and the dance floor seems uncommonly full while people are singing. Yay for The Hen---the best bar in the neighborhood!

Just a note about the karaoke here: I stopped by one time on a Wednesday for some dancing, forgetting it was a karaoke night. I think it was about 11 o'clock. I walked in, saw how extremely packed it was, and turned around and walked back out. It seemed to be taken over by drunk college kids! I haven't gone back on a Wednesday since. I went on a Monday night and the crowd was a lot smaller. It was a small rotation, so if I had stayed later than 10, I probably would have gotten to sing a lot. The sound system was great and the selection was huge! They needed two big binders to put all the songs in. It happened that the host that Monday was hosting for the last time, so I'm not sure it will be the same next time I go there on a Monday... I also decided to check out their jam on Sunday! It was awesome. A few guys on stage with guitars and an upright bass, singing old country and rock songs. If you wanted to sing a song or play something, you were invited to join in! I sang a song with them and it was super exciting. Of course you have to know all the words to your song, but they were very forgiving if you screwed up - very low pressure! A super supportive crowd. I love this bar!

My mom and I are big line dancers. I just moved here and my mom was visiting and wanted to check out a place to go dancing. I looked on yelp and found the Little Red Hen. We went on a Saturday night with some of my friends. If you're looking for a fun, down-to-earth neighborhood joint to kick it with some country music and a diverse crowd for people watching, this is it. It felt like the majority of folks including the younger college students were regulars. If you're looking to line dance, be sure to go on their line dance nights. My mom and I thought we might be able to line dance on the dance floor while the crowd two-stepped around us but we were mistaken. The dance floor is tiny. And crowded with enthusiastic people partner dancing at varying skill levels. There is no room for mixing and sharing dance types. We're spoiled by the huge dance floor at the Brandin' Iron in San Bernardino, CA where this is possible. The waitress was sweet and very capable, especially considering that the place got packed and she was the only one serving everyone! Other than going on the wrong night for line dancing and the teeny-weeny dance floor, this is a fun place to go and dance and hang out with friends.

I went here on a second date and had a total blast! I'm not the biggest country fan but figured it would be a fun interesting time and it was. We got there a little early around 7:30 when it was quiet and had some appetizers which were both good, the onion rings and the cheese sticks. The live band started playing around 9ish and it got really loud, most everyone danced the two step. I was asked to dance a few times and had a blast. The waitress rarely came to our table though and my date had to get our drinks from the bar. The crowd was pretty mixed and had young and old and I think that's what made it more fun. I would definitely go again.

I have been talking about making out to The Little Red Hen for a while now....I finally made it out there last night. The food was good, the drinks were good, the bartenders were very friendly and the people I met were not fake. Seems a lot of places these days have a bunch of fake people trying to be something they are not. The atmosphere was great and I will definintely be back. I need to pull my boots off the shelf and dust them off cause I've got somewhere to wear them!

This place is the absolute worst!!! I've been there 3 times and every time the old waitress treats me like dirt I'm convinced it's because I'm black, I went up to buy a beer and she purposely kept ignoring me, I was with a group of guys and was the only black guy in the group, I stood there definitely but not leering or "mean mugging" her at all after about 15-20 min a guy in my group walked up and ordered a beer for me. This happened the other two times I went there, on the last time I went there a interracial couple went in there and left in disgust when they could not get service, don't believe me I would LOVE to see a hidden camera news team do an expose on a black man going into that bar, they DO NOT try and hide it at least the old woman bartender doesn't. If your a black male stay away from this place your not welcome here.

Little Red Hen in GreenLake is a great place to go if you want to dance and or learn to dance. Sun and Tues nights couples country dances, two step, cowboy cha cha, ten step, etc.. the classes are FREE~ Great dance instructor MaryAnn. Friendly bartenders. Tons of regulars mostly over 40 but on Fri and Sat very mixed crowd and mostly college aged. Pool table in back. Small dance floor, very good food!

I like going here because it's close to my house and I can stumble home. The atmosphere is really great, with a mix of people ranging from college students to 70 year-old couples who are there to dance. I'm not a huge country music fan, but I really like the live country music. Most of the bands are extremely talented and play a good mix of covers (that even I recognize) along with some of their own tunes. Sundays through Tuesdays feature free dance lessons at 8pm. I was able to find a nice partner to dance with each time I went so don't worry about flying solo, dudes. Wednesdays are Karaoke and can be the most packed night all week. On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving '09 there were about 100 people waiting in line to get in. Pretty ridiculous considering this is essentially a dive bar. People, at that point, just go to Earl's. The downsides: 1) The place can get wayyy too packed and sometimes you literally have no place to stand, not to mention find a place to sit. Get there early on nights like Wednesdays and Fridays. 2) Drinks are not as cheap as you would expect them to be from a divey looking place like this. 3) There is cover on the busier nights ($5)

Ever walk into a place to meet new friends and think "wow where am I?!" that is how I felt entering The Little Red Hen. I am not a fan of country music but this is a great place to enjoy the crazy atmosphere. There is dancing and decent food and is it ever loud. If you are looking to meet a wide range of interesting people, this is likely a good start. And speaking of starts this is the place to take intro country dance lessons... how else am I going to learn these things for free? So go, have a beer, and experience the fact that this Little Red Hen will share her food freely.

I'm a fan and I don't even like country music! Came here last night (Wednesday, Karaoke) with a new friend and some of her friends for drinks and dancing. I was a bit worried when she mentioned it was a "Country Music" bar, but really I only heard a couple country music songs all night, and we closed this place down! I'm not a dancer, I've never claimed to be and I can't remember the last time I danced, it's been years. Anyways, I danced my ass off last night and had more fun than I have in a long time. I guess with the right dance partner it just works out! ;) The drinks were a bit on the weak side, at least mine were but my friend said that hers were pretty strong and they must have been as I had to drive her car home after she only had 3 drinks! Overall it was a fun place with good music and a great vibe. I don't frequent Green Lake too often but if you do then give this place a try, even if you're not a country music fan.

I'd give 5 stars if their A/C worked. HINT HINT HINT Been coming here for years. You'll see cowboys, senior citizens, chicks with pink hair, rockabilly dudes and everything in between. The live music is great. The dance floor is tiny...come to think of it the place as a whole is not very big at all so if you have personal space issues this may not be the best place for you. This is a safe, fun and inclusive crowd. The mixed drinks are good and strong. I always have a great time here. Come on down...

I've been hanging out here a lot recently. Theres always really nice people here, and one of the few places around where it only gets better as the night goes on. Weeknights I mean. Karaoke was a blast, lots of great singers & a few ones you needed to drink to listen to. They even fixed the handle on the bathroom door, so now I don't have to pee in front of everybody. All my friends dig the energy of this place aswell. A lot of other counrty bars I've been to, just don't have happy people in them.

Don't like this place at all bartenders are rude and self include tip when paying with cash. And only will help customers who pay in cash and will keep all remaining change. Paid $10 for a $3 beer and the bartender refused to give me back any change. Unacceptable.

What a fun atmosphere!!!! We showed up during a benefit for the Nashville flood victims. Music was great, service was great and the drinks were very reasonably priced! I got a kick out of this place because it's an unexpected find in the Greenlake neighborhood. Prime people watching experience, nothing more fun than seeing everyone get all dressed up to dance and have a blast! Can't wait to go back and make an ass out of myself karaoke style! Woohoo!

This is the kind of place that makes me feel awkward to be ME... I don't usually like country music, I don't like Bud Light, I don't like dancing nor do I really know how to dance to country music, I don't like cowboy hats, I don't like most college kids or most old wannabe hicks or most real hicks... crap... what was I even doing here... But wait, I DO love KARAOKE!!!!!!!! So somehow I found myself roped into a honkytonk night at the ol' Hen... whatever... I mean, let's just be honest, this is not really an "Emily" kind of place but if I can get on stage and make people listen to me sing & watch my dramatic interpretive dance skillz, then I'll give it a shot. I don't think I'll be going back anytime soon, for myriad reasons, but it was entertaining in an ironic kind of way. And hey, everyone has their niche and that's part of the beauty of life. I bet a lot of people have a similar attitude about places I treasure and take seriously (ie the Crescent) so really, we can't judge one way or another, now can we?

Get down to the Little Red Hen knowing enough not to wear a belly shirt over your muffin top with the words "Get Down Tonight" across your bosom, and trust me, you'll leave feeling smokin' hot. This is a weirdly unpretentious honky-tonk that features waitresses gritting their teeth till their next ciggy break, cowboys and cowboy lites, and the cheapest beer outside happy hour. Kind of brought me back to Arkansas, including one memorable number by the band - and I'm not making this up - called "Titties and Beer." I believe the chorus contained the brilliant lyrics, "Thank god I'm not queer." Would that you were, band singer. You not have worn plaid with your stripes. Also, while I've gotten hit on in other bars, this is the first one where I've been proposed to on the dance floor. That must have been some dance. ;)

If dancing (or drinking) to live country music is your thing, the LRH is the real deal. It's a little cramped, definitely dated, and can get terribly busy, but the oodles of character more than makes up for all that. But be warned this is not your typical "hipster" Seattle bar. Be prepared to see older, uncool people mixing with you on the dance floor. (Which I think is kinda cool personally.)

I was told to check this place out for a little piece of back home and all. So I went on karoke night and it was pretty good. That Gump guy was funny and there were lots of stuff for good songs and all. So not bad. Nothing like the stuff back home but ya this place is dang good for Seattle!

Free Line Dancing Lesson Live country music Mean bartender Never line danced before and I felt totally comfortable doing it here. This bar is so out of place in Seattle it is not even funny---hard to believe it is still around. I would recommend you go here. It isn't scary, it is fun. The folks who dance as couples can really cut a rug--seriously impressive. Besides, you know what they say if you don't like country music....

This place has sort of become a birthday tradition for me. OK, so it's not the classiest place in the city, but I'm not the classiest girl, either. Recently they got new management and spruced up the bathrooms a little. Thank God they didn't paint over the sweet western mural. Anyway, they have fun live music most nights and karaoke on Wednesdays (the first time I went on a Wednesday my first thought was, "Oh wow, YOUNG people come here too?"). All in all, you have to try this place at least once. Make sure you bring a big group of friends who don't mind angering the regulars by dancing solo in the middle of the dance floor. Or you can always play wallflower and be asked to dance by the 6 or 7 men that I see EVERY time I'm there.

5 stars for the survival (and thrival no less) of a funky little country joint in the middle of yuppie-central Greenlake! Minus one star for the surly dude at the door (guess it's his job, though, so - okay). I'm not really a country music fan, although back when I was a tot my family hit our fair share of horse events and had a big truck. But I LOVE dancing. All kinds, I don't discriminate, and I don't claim to do any of it exceedingly well. And that includes country dancing - thank goodness my dad made me take basic ballroom in high school and that I took swing in college. I was unprepared for the onslaught of cowboys requesting dances of me and my girlfriend, but we just went with the flow and took them up on their offers. Hey, it's cardio, right? I thought they were all really polite, escorting us back to our seats after the dance, and none were drunk. One of them looked like Chuck Norris, too, then again, I had had some shots. I don't know any other place within the city limits where you can hear live country music, including this darling lady on the drums. They also played my favorite old country song by Mel McDaniels, so I was (as they say) 'happier'n a pig in' you know what! PS - there's no ATM and they only take cash at the door. Might wanna bring hand sanitizer, too.

DON'T COME HERE!! My friend was trying to close out her tab after last call and the bouncer got in her face about leaving. She told him she would leave in a minute, but he felt the need to push her so hard she feel on the ground. He then proceeded to grab her by her legs and DRAG her out. she was covered in cuts and bruises. After that happened I tried to go in and talk to the bouncer/bartender and hash out what happened. I was very polite and non-aggressive, I just wanted to know how this all escalated and see if they would apologize to my friend. Both the bouncer and the female bartender were extremely rude to me. They refused to apologize and basically said she 'deserved' this because she was drunk. Honestly this is appalling. She had had 3 drinks and wasn't being disorderly. And even if she was, there is absolutely no situation that calls for dragging a women out by her legs. I have never witnessed such a dehumanizing situation at a bar Because it was last call there was still a crowd of people around that witnessed this. Several people came forward to help us. Someone called the police, but nothing was really done. It blows my mind that some people think this behavior is okay. It's 2012, lets try to be a little more progressive. Needless to say i will never be going back to The Little Red Hen ever again. I refuse to support a business that would demoralize a person like that.

A country honky-tonk that's the real deal so wear your Stetson and boots. Read about their Wednesday karaoke night and gave it a try. The place was crowded with fun college types, but the place felt so comfortable it didn't matter I could probably be one of these people's Dad. Can you beat $2 beer and no cover? I didn't have enough courage to sing this time (they had lots of non-country songs too) but I plan on coming back. Very lively and fun.

Allright babeez-- let's get something straight right off the bat: there are places you go when you want to be impressive & be impressed. Then- there are places you go when you just want to let your hair down, get kinda silly, and whoop it up with your friends at night!! *** The Hen is Choice #2 ! ! *** Yes, it's a dive bar. Yes, they have cheap beer. Yes, there are guys there breathing down your neck, etc. [And God knows I will never understand this whole Utili-skirt thing]. BUT! We have a yee-ha whole heckuva lot of fun there every single time we go-- so give it a try. If you are just out for some fun you probably will too!

Every up and coming neighborhood needs a dive bar to keep it real and The Little Red Hen is Greenlake's reality check. Local country and bluegrass bands rotate through this cozy bar on a weekly, or even, monthly basis. Free country western dance lessons are Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays. Even if you don't dance, hang out and watch the folks who have the courage to try. A true local's refuge, their motto could be, "Service with a Sneer". Don't try to carry on a conversation with the surly bartender on Tuesdays, just take your drink and get the hell away. Breakfast and lunch are served till 2:00pm but you'll have to review the food 'cause I've never tried it.

Pleased to meet you Little Red Hen. I like anything different and the little Red Hen isn't your typical place. Big Country right there in Greenlake. You can do-si-do and swing your pardner, just good old fashioned country times that took me back to some bars in Georgia. I'll be back. After paying a $5 cover which many seemed to think was unusual, but I figured reasonable as the band was just what you wanted eight of us stalked the bar until some one managed a round of 8 bottles of beer. Unknown to me, the first of the beers was a "try this, it might not be good," but down in came to me and to drinking I went. After a few sips I mentioned that my beer had to have been watered down, something just isn't right. At this point I did what any reasonable person would do, a test. I took another Coors light, spilled some on the bar, and took my own and did the same, and AH HA, no bubbles in mine. The sad story ends when I tell the bartender who says yeah, I didn't charge you guys for it, I thought it was a bad one. Are you kidding me? A bad one? I just drank half a bad one. Switching to Bud seemed like the most reasonable thing to do. Silly little hen.

My friends and I have gone to the Hen on a fairly regular basis for Wednesday karaoke nights. I know that this place is completely different on wednesday nights, so if you're curious about any other night disregard this review. Pros: Cheap(ish) drinks, free entertainment, a varied crowd (I always enjoy watching the people my parents age wading in a sea of drunken college students), decent karaoke selection Cons: Wednesday night bartenders can be rude (but if I were them, I would be too, they put up with a lot of shit), the bathrooms are tiny, and I have never felt that I was in a meat market more than a wednesday night at the hen. BUT if you can get past these things and you go with fun people, it can be a great time.

I'd avoid frat-karaoke night if you're interested in enjoying one of the best dive bars in the city. Shoot some pool. Drink some beer or sip on some whiskey in a dimly-lit room. Listen to some country ballads. This place is as non-pretentious as it gets and is a healthy antidote to Seattle's overdose of hipster bars.

Let me start by saying that I am not real country-type girl. When my friend announced he was having his 35th birthday party at the Little Red Hen, I wasn't over the moon. But, I do like a theme and am always looking for a chance to bust out pigtails and some cute boots. Arrived about 8p on Thursday, and the place was empty. We got table service from a pleasant waitress for the first couple drinks. But within the hour, the place was hopping. Seriously packed. I had heard that they started charging a cover at 9p, but I never saw a bouncer or anything. The great thing about this place is the wide demographic of folks. And everybody having a great time! There were older folks just there to dance and younger groups of guys out on the piss. Our group never felt out of place, and everyone was friendly and smiley. Of course, that could be because our whole group was wearing fake mustaches. The band that night was great, and the dance floor was always packed. They even dedicated a song a to my friend for his birthday. We're not quite sure how they actually knew it was his birthday--they even had his age right. Perhaps we were louder after all those bourbons than we thought. I didn't eat here, but a few friends did, and the burger and quesadilla looked great. Strong drinks, good service, upbeat atmosphere. I think I might be a cowgirl.

I'd normally not go into a place that looks like a tavern, but it was a surprisingly good place for breakfast. A friend of mine and I were looking for a place to get something to eat on the weekend, and the other places in the neighbourhood had lines. So, we stopped in and had a great breakfast...I can see that it's more of a night stop for a few beers...looks like a dive, but it's how I roll...sometimes. :)

A bunch of us ventured off of capitol hill to get out and about, and back in touch with our Eastern Washington roots. We showed up on a Friday around 8:30pm, and it was eeeempty. A few bud lites later, though, and the place was jam-packed (music started around 9:30pm). Really great mix of older gentlemen in cowboy hats and younger folks. Everyone was extremely nice, including the waitstaff (who knew me by first name after my fifth bud lite).

I admit that I'm not a huge fan of country, at least not contemporary country. But bring in a rockabilly show, and I will dance all night! I love that there is a dance floor where I can find a dance partner to swing with, or sit and have a beer. There's not a lot of seating, but who wants to sit when you can dance? However, the dance floor isn't huge, and it can get really crowded. That's really my only negative, is that the dance floor gets too crowded at times, and no one can really dance.

Growing up in southern Arizona and living in TX for a little while, I figured my countrified self would experience a slow death when I moved to Seattle. It did. None of my new friends really appreciated country music, leave alone country dance, to my huge disappointment. So, as the years passed by, I exchanged my black Justins for my black Mary Janes, put away my Wranglers and donned my Gap jeans, and permanently lost my Texas accent. I heard about the Little Red Hen years ago, but never really knew anyone who wanted to go. Until one of our newer dance troupe members kept mentioning her regular visits to "The Hen" for some two-stepping, cowboy cha-cha-ing, and schottische-ing. After a few months, we decided to hit The Hen to listen to The Rolling Blackouts. Entrance: wow, no cover on a Thursday night. Woo-hoo. Cover charge on Friday & Saturday. Bar: I like to call my gin & tonics. I like to call them Sapphire. But not at the Hen. Tanqueray? You betcha. Total for my strong drink: $5.50. Stephen's Jack Daniel's (what else) on the rocks was $4.50. Our friend ordered a Manny's, cost unknown--but some dude paid for her second beer, so for her it was half price drinking. Menu: The fare resembles what I would expect for a country place. Fri & Sat night features : littleredhen.com/pages/m… Happy hour: M-F 9am-noon, 4-7pm includes $2 domestic beers & well drinks, $3.50 16-oz. microbrews. Music: Rolling Blackouts were fun, playing some of their own stuff as well as a variety of country-western covers. Entertainment: lots of people of different ages, from different backgrounds made for an interesting evening. Until Stephen J. arrived later in the evening, however, I was having a bit of a rough time. Turns out our dance troupe buddy is quite popular, being asked to dance almost every song. Which means I sat by myself long enough to feel very alone, scared the much older, inebriated man in sneakers and matching red shorts and wind jacket would ask me to dance. He didn't, however. I don't think I was young enough.

A real-life country honky tonk in Seattle's Greenlake. In a town filled with irony and ersatz, the Little Red Hen is a bite of a real thing, albeit plunked down quizzically in Seattle, right off of Greenlake. This place has real cowboys, real country folks who wears there pressed Wrangler's, boots and hats. And then they dance! dance! dance! It is so cool to watch people who know how to dance do it, and these guys do. Two-stepping and all sorts of couple dancing, as well as line dancing in the middle of the dance floor. If you are a girl, you'll get asked by some 70 year old guy to dance, and he'll be a gentleman, and show you that he knows better than your 25-year old boyfriend how to dance. Then he'll say thank you and go back to his beer. They have live music very often. Dance lessons at least one night a week. Beer, full bar and food. A great place for a party. But it's for having fun, not making fun of (ya feel me?).

We've made Tuesday night at the Little Red Hen a regular night out. A really nice group of people come out to dance, enjoy the free lesson before the band starts and just have a great time. I don't know anywhere else in Seattle to find such an easy going and fun night out. Love the bartenders - as nice as they come!

Okay, some friends and I wanted to go here for one of the 'free' country dancing lessons that we had heard so much about. The lesson was totally fun, and the dance teacher, (I forget her name,) was great. (A word of warning ladies; go with a male dance partner, or else skeezy cowboys WILL attempt to have sex with you! This happened to my friend, although I was lucky enough to be paired with a helpful and avuncular gentleman.) After the lesson I was thirsty, but we didn't feel like hanging around and drinking alcohol as it was Sunday night. This was a fatal mistake. My friend and I approached the bar and I asked for water. The cranky bartendrix demanded to see our ID's before loudly informing us that there was a two dollar minimum, and we would have to have bottled water. I was expecting this, so I ordered one. The woman then insisted that my friend order something too, so she got one as well. We then walked outside to find the rest of our party, and she actually CHASED us out of the bar, yelling at us to get back inside with our waters, or else the WA state liquor board would shut them down for violations. Let me reiterate at this point that we were drinking BOTTLED WATER!!!! We were planning on returning during the week for more dancing and drinking, but now we won't be back. Ever.

You should know what you're getting into. The Little Red Hen is not cleaned for your enjoyment. You will not sit back and enjoy tapas while sipping microbrews and listening to mild country tunes at a reasonable volume. The questionable-looking fellow in the corner is not a character actor, paid to add a bit of atmosphere to the experience. If you are looking for friendly and attentive service, try Belltown; The staff of the Little Red Hen won't put up with your crap to get a bigger tip. It comes down to what you want in a bar: If you want a place like the other bars in Seattle, there are many to choose from. If you want to go to a place where the drink preference is even divided between Coors and Bud, the mixed drinks are made strong, and the music is country, the Little Red Hen won't let you down.

Several years ago, I dragged a couple of my QA roomies here to meet a guy that was interested in moi, and this So Cal girl was a tad scared to go into a country bar. Hell, I was really scared. Once I saw that said guy was in TIGHT jeans (I mean really who wants to see all the business like that), decked out in cowboy gear, and tried to get my ass to boot scoot or whatever the hell they call it... I grabbed my girls, did a couple shots, and we headed on out the door. Happy Trails Red Hen.

A cozy little honky-tonk in a fine Seattle suburb, this bar radiates nothing but warmth on each and every visit. Smiles and two-stepping galore, this is one of my favorite bars, not for the mixed drinks, which are not their forte, but for the cold bottled beer, the dim lighting and excellent bands playing with perfect acoustics, suitable for both dancing up a sweat AND holding a conversation without having to shout. Don't miss this joint on a Saturday night!

Interesting. That is the word I would use to describe my thoughts when walking into The Little Red Hen. As a Karaoke connoisseur (and avid Yelper), I looked up The Little Red Hen, read reviews and decided to hit this place up. I went on a Friday and decided that a weekday visit might have to get placed in the works. Friday left something to be desired as the bar was filled with college fratty types, less cowboy types and a very busy/biotchy bartender. Yes my friends...I did read the other reviews and was prepared for what I thought was the worst but maybe there was some optimistic side of me that thought, "eh...the service couldn't be THAT bad!?". Long story short, the bartender (older, raspy woman) made my drink weak, seemed agitated that I decided to order one more for the "road" (that's the journey back to my seat) and proceeded to order a sandwich. I'll have to give this place another try. The one thing keeping this bar in three star status is that of the Karaoke host and roster. We got to sing 4 times in 1 1/2 hrs which is amazing! Oh, and the fact that this place is still standing in Greenlake is just as amazing!!

Oh my goodness I love the Hen. I found the hen after coming back from Colorado when I found myself missing the good people that inhabit the middle of this country. Though certainly not everyone in Colorado is country, there is a pervasive cowboy sorta attitude. Denver was founded by cowboys and miners. Seattle was founded by Scandinavians. It's been a culture shock for me. It also seem to me there is a inexcusable lack of dancing in Seattle. Even when good dance music is present, it seems most people just cooly bob their heads, and those that do dance just drunkenly flail themselves about. Everyone has to start somewhere and making mistakes on the dance floor is how one learns, but I want more from my dance venues than a floor packed with drunken flailers. So missing Colorado, and wanting to dance with people that take dancing seriously enough to get good at it, I searched around and found the hen. And it's a great things that this place has everything I want because there aren't many other options for country dancing in Seattle. They have country dance lessons with a partner (no need to bring one, lots of people just pair up with a stranger when they get there.) on Sundays and Tuesdays at 8 and line dance lessons on Mondays at 8. Maryanne, the instructor, is wonderful, and great fun to watch dance when she sticks around after the lessons. Between Maryanne and a few regulars, ok, lots of regulars, I've learned so much. Still have lots to learn, but I've found them to be friendly and very helpful and extremely patient with me. The bartenders, especially Sunny, and Shorty are great. One of the bartenders there is less than "friendly", but none of them are rude. I can't imagine what people are talking about in their reviews stating the bartenders were rude. This whole place is like cheers. Everyone is really down to earth and easy going. As a female I especially love how friendly other women are to me there. Some earlier reviewer talked about skanks there, which confused me. There are some random, short skirted, college girls that come in who don't dance and don't smile, but they are the exception not the rule, and I've found most of the women are there to dance, not to date. Very little competition between the women, and even the ones that come in with their partner are quite happy to share him with other dancers. And I just love the variety of people that dance with each other. Yes, largely it's older men with younger women, but I also see older women with much younger men, and also dance partners that look like the probably wouldn't know or talk to each other outside the hen. I'm there a LOT and I've only once had a plastic pint glass. The bathroom, at least both of the women's bathrooms, are always clean, though some people don't realize that you need to hold the handle down for a while to get the toilet to flush properly. The only night I can't cope with going to the hen is on Weds. Then it becomes everything I try to avoid in my life: drunken college kids, whipped cream flavored vodka, idiots that don't know how to dance flailing drunkenly, lack of room to move, and it loses it's friendly attitude, and just becomes a meat market. And really my only complaint is that the dance floor isn't big enough, but the layout of the building would make it very difficult to expand the dance floor without renovating the whole joint. My tips for getting the most out of the tiny dance floor are to stay in the center if you are doing swing or doing some other dance that doesn't progress around the outer edge of the floor. This way it doesn't become a traffic jam. And men, you are the lead, which means you are responsible for not bumping into the people dancing around you, and responsible for not flinging your partner into other people during spins. If you are friendly, and don't piss off the regulars or employees this place will treat you right!

I must admit that inside me is an incredibly down-home small-town girl with a racy streak and a sassy twang. Her spiritual home is the Little Red Hen. I love purty much everything about that bar. The live music six nights a week (mostly really good country), the free dance lessons twice a week, the chivalrous cowboys, the cheap booze, the funky wall mural, even the surly bartender. My mother says when she goes to heaven St. Peter will play the steel guitar. In the meantime, she'll be at the Hen.

I was born and raised in the South and was happy to hear I had a little piece of home in Seattle. First time here was on my wife's 21st birthday and man were we disappointed. There was maybe 5 people in the place when we got there, about 10 when the band started up. Beer was relatively cheap, but for a country place I figured there would be more "country" beers on tap. They only had Bud on tap, no Coors Light to my disappointment. Plan on going again and hopefully won't be let down.

This place is just - hands down - so cool! I mean a real country bar in the heart of GreenLake? Awesome. No idea how long it's been around but clearly a long time...maybe when GreenLake was a "rural" area? The crowd is as diverse as can be - you'll definitely find your boots, hats and large belt buckles here, but everything, everyone and every-age else all over the map, too. The people are great, too, friendly, happy to be there, and down-to-earth; no pretentiousness here whatsoever. Maryanne, the dance instructor (free lessons Sun-Tues at 8pm), is fantastic, the bands are always good and there is live music nearly every night (5 nights perhaps, with some karoake on a night or two but I haven't braved that scene yet). The bartenders are friendly, the guy at the door is not always friendly but whatever. My only complaint is that the dance floor is too small, but heck, where else can you boot-scoot in the heart of Seattle?

This place is awesome. For hardcore country fans and the casual fan. Sundays, Tuesday's and Thursday's and weekends are my favorite. Good music most nights. Country Dave, Jerry and The Philbillys, The Souvenirs, Dusty 45's, The Swains are some of my favorites. Nice mix of old and younger folks. Great place to dance and drink and watch the game. Good food too.

Bad service, crap drinks, and country music. If you haven't run away yet, then consider yourself warned. If you're old, or really into country, this might be your scene. I'm from texas, and I'm not a big country fan, but I've been to much better bars in my time.

Country sing along karaoke mashed up with mainstream hip-hop. Sounds like a mess huh? It is, but only sort of, sometimes it actually works. Wednesday is when I think it all goes down. This is definitely one of the most curious bar scenes I've been to. Who can sing along to Achy Breaky Blah and Let me Ride? I can't.

Suffice it to say, my 30 something self and body RARELY whoop it up. BUT, somehow the mood was ripe and a small group of us proceeded to close the Little Red Hen midweek. Go figure. It is a complete dive. There is a separate "kiosk" if you don't want to wait at the bar - CASH ONLY BEER AND JAGER. I avoided that corner. Yes, a country, geeky feel but a warm and welcoming karaoke crowd (not just country). Definitely weird plopped down in that Greenlake scene but I liked how completely random it was. Woulda been nice to see a cab tat 2 a.m. though. Ouch.

I stopped in on a Monday night to check out the free line dancing lessons and escape the heat ... First of all it was so cold it felt so good compared to outside.. It was happy hour and I ordered some hot wings and a draft IPA.. The wings were delicious perfectly sauced and only $5 for I believe 8 with some ranch and celery and carrots... Line dancing was fun I stayed after and even sang a song for Monday night karaoke.. Totally friendly crowd a mixture of all ages .. Both bartenders were dolls especially Mimi... I can't wait to go back I love this place !

Visited Tuesday night for country dancing lesson 8-9 and it was a blast. The instructor was very good. She gave clear instructions, demo-ed, pointed out our bad habits, gave pointers as we danced, and had a great sense of humor. I would totally come back for lessons again. Did I mention it's free? And the people watching was fantastic, too. Experienced dancers looking graceful on the dance floor, country get up like none other. I felt I was in Texas again. But oh, we received no service when we got there early and had to leave to get food then come back. Maybe there's a secret hand shake we don't know about.
