I really want to give it 0 stars. I ate there today order two fish tacos looked fresh enough half way through the first one the taste was odd so I looked at the inside of the fish and it was so gross I almost threw up. It was the weirdest cheapest piece of fish I've ever seen. I took it back up to the counter to the cashier and told and showed her how bad it was. She offered something else but I truly lost my appetite. She brought back to the kitchen and the owner I'm assuming came out glared at me said something to her and a few minutes later she came to our table and handed me $2.50 I didn't get the money returned for the other one because I ate half. He should have apologized screw the money back. I am so grateful that I don't have food poisoning I still feel disgusted by the whole thing. Never will go back and I had been there at least 5 times before.

I have to say their location on QA (although only a couple tables) is much better all around. Here the food is still yummy (recommend #1) w/ a perfect amount of cilantro:) the service is a little sideways, it just reminds me of a bad hairday, to big & not enough product.

Best tacos in Ballard, hands down.

What a disappointment. I really wanted to like this place since it is right up the block from my office. I've tried the tacos (both chicken and carne asada) and a burrito, and all were flavorless and unexciting. I'm giving two stars because hey, the food didn't make me sick. So that's a plus. Wouldn't hurry back...

  • Michael H.

Two stars because it was just bad, not disgusting. My enchiladas combo (one chicken, one cheese, rice, and pinto beans) was uninspired, boring, and dry. Didn't bother finishing it. But maybe that's because I ate too many of the chips-from-a-bag beforehand. And I don't know what other reviews mean about "affordable" when what I paid should have bought something a lot better. And it would have at Gordito's or Taco del Mar. But the girl at the counter was super nice!

Been to Malena's a lot and it is average. The food, for the most part is mediocre. I will give Malena a high-five for her salsa and chili relleno burrito. The carne asada is also pretty good. Otherwise not much to write about. There are plenty of other tastier taco options.

  • Christina B.

I wanted to like Malena's, I really did! Who doesn't like cheap Mexican food close to their 'hood? Well, this is definitely not a bargain... hell,Taco del Mar could get you way better food for the same price if not cheaper. The chips were disgusting, obviously store bought. The salsa is ok... but that was about the only thing that tasted somewhat decent. My husband and I both were way underwhelmed by the burritos we got - the chicken was lacking of any sort of flavor as were the bland veggies. The rice was old and gross, and the guacamole tasted like mayo. Ew. Let me repeat: EW. Adios, Malena.... doubt you'll be around for too long.

After having HORRIBLE service at Balmar, my friends and I ran here to finally get some food. It was exactly what I expected which is why it gets a 3/5. The chips were from a bag, the salsa tasted homemade, but also acidic so might have been a little ripe. The enchiladas were great, one chicken, one beef, I didn't understand all of the lettuce, tomatoes and Parmesan cheese on top, but they made a good salad I suppose. It was all filling and was priced right, so I couldn't complain. One of my friends however had the vegetarian burrito which is usually filled with rice, beans, and vegetables yet this one had almost a salad wrapped into a tortilla(no rice or beans) and few vegi's. I would go back, but I wouldn't suggest the vegetarian burrito unless you want a burrito look but really need a salad.

Love Malena's - Don't change a thing! It is perfect for what they are - a local awesome hole in the wall kind of place. If you have expectations for anything else you will be disappointed. Adobada Burrito is my staple. Delicious marinated pork, guacamole in the burrito and easily big enough to share with the free chips and salsa. The chips are not store bought as I've seen them being made in the back and the house salsa is great as well. Everyone has always been super nice at both QA and the Ballard location.

We used to come here a couple of years ago, before the fire. Back then their food really hit the spot: fresh, quick, cheap Mexican standards. There was a pork burrito smothered in green chile sauce that was out of this world. Well, it's not on the menu anymore. The rice tastes boxed. The beans are unlike any other beans I've had, and not in a good way. My tamales were warmed up in a microwave. I'm just not getting it anymore. This used to be one of our favorite places for a quick, cheap take out. No mas. On the upside, it's still cheap. It can't be all bad, can it?

  • Lara M.

Love these tacos! What can I say, eating here reminds me of eating in Mazatlan. The service is quick and the food is fresh and hot. The Carne Asada tacos are wonderful. Nice warm corn tortillas, fresh tomatoes and onions plus the best guacamole make these my number one food craving.

Never even got to try the food, so I'm giving it a neutral 3 star review. We walked in @ 8:30 last night, and saw 2 "employee looking" gents standing outside- I thought they were being lazy because it was slow. I opened the door and walked in, and they hollered out "hey, don't go in there, it's on fire!" As soon as it was heard, the thick fog of plastic-scented smoke hit my nose. We walked back to our car, drove through the lot, and then saw the flames bursting out of the back kitchen. Seriously scared the crap out of us. As we sped off, the fire trucks arrived. Tacos are not worth risking your life, let me tell you.

Ive been wanting to try malenas for awhile, but I have other taquerias closer to me that I am fond of. Well today I was picking up some photos at ballard camera, and was hungry so I decided to try it out. The menu is small-ish. I felt like for the amount of food I got it was a bit pricey compared to other mexican places around seattle (guaymas, tequila etc). I paid $10 for a carne asada burrito and a small diet coke. The burrito was alright, pretty tasty, but I expected it to have rice and beans in it!! It was just carne asada, guacamole, green peppers, onions and tomato. no cheese or anything. Seemed pretty healthy and it was filling! The salsa was good also. I was satisfied but I probably will continue to go to tequila...for their selection of booze, large menus with more authentic style mexican...burritos about twice the size of malenas..and chips made in house (the chips at malenas are store- bought...eww). In other words, it was good, but not awesome. When I want a burrito I want it to be muy delicioso!!!

I live down the street from Malena's and had dinners there quite a few times. Their food quality is uneven - the entrees I've had range from really good to downright awful. Their chicken and pork tacos were DELICIOUS. They put the same meat in their enchiladas, so you can't go wrong with those, either. The beef machaca burrito was uninspired. I don't know what was wrong with the seasoning, it just didn't taste that great. I've also had the veggie burrito, which was pretty awful unless you like to eat a tasteless salad wrapped in flour tortilla. I think mine had rice, beans, a lot of chopped iceberg lettuce and raw bell peppers (possibly some onions too, can't remember). The rice and beans came lukewarm, but it got cold fast because of the amount of lettuce and bell peppers (probably two-thirds of it was raw unseasoned veggies). Needless to say, I now stick with the pork and chicken. The rice and beans were okay, not great but not bad. The chips were so-so (I've had better chips from Trader Joe's), but the salsa was excellent. For some reason you have to pay extra if you want chips and salsa with your to-go order, so I usually eat-in.

Oh Ballard Malena's, you broke my heart when you shut down because of the fire. I hate the Queen Anne location, so I waited patiently for your return. I love love LOVE the rolled chicken tacos, they simply send me to taco heaven. The rice and beans can either be tasty or nasty depending on the time of day you go it seems, but that's just part of Malena's charm. Until my next #5....

    (4)
  • Rick P.

Definitely not horrible, but just not memorable either. Just kinda mediocre in my opinion. Maybe some of the meat menu items would be better, but the veggie burrito did not do anything for me. With so many other options around, I doubt I'll be back here

still on the hunt to find my favorite mexican place, but this takes the cake for guacamole! it is fantastic!

The fish tacos here are the best. They are really nice and the food is ready quick.

Pretty much as described by other reviews. Really enjoyed my food. Rice and beans were simple but good.

  • Dan L.

I started going to the Malena's on Queen Anne years ago. It was always good. The Ballard shop has never even come close. It was acceptable when it opened, but has gone down-hill since then. The last 3 times I have been there, I have ordered different things and each time thrown my plate in the garbage and left. I will never go back. The fish was way past its prime and new shrimp tacos were not fit for human consumption (grey, stringy, and malodorous).

    (1)
  • Eugene C.

Other reviews have stated that the tacos are greasy--really greasy. I like the taste of fat as much as the next guy, but I don't like it gushing out of my taco. Specifically, I had a carnitas taco. I have had better in Seattle, which is not saying much.

    (2)
  • Rea F.

Oh man are the tacos amazing here! The prices are pretty good. Give it a try!

What is more traditional and authentic than a literal hole in the wall complete dive of a joint for a mexican restaurant. I have only been to the Ballard location, but dont really need to go another one as I have fallen in love with their food. All food is made fresh daily from scratch. These ladies aren't messing around when it comes tortillas either, all made on location, they are absolutely incredible. The food is very reasonably priced too. Not only do you get great authetic mexican style food, but the prices are much better than crappy Azteca! So if you haven't had the chance I really recommend stopping by Malenas, you wont be disappointed.

  • Raymond W.

3 1/2 Stars Malena's isn't pretty. Malena's will never "wow". But that's okay, because Malena's is like the old pair of shoes that you wear in the rain to get where you're going- sturdy and dependable. And for a quick lunch or dinner that's filling, good, and under $10, sometimes that's all that's needed.

    (4)
  • Daniel W.

This is a great little place to eat with very reasonable prices. Absolutely no ambiance whatsoever but it is clean and comfortable. The carne asada tacos I had were flavorful with just a hint of char on the steak. I liked that they came with a delicious guacamole already on them and it isn't an extra charge like most places. I also like that you get chips and salsa with your meal and the salsa is yummy. The chips however are a mystery.

  • Carrie H.

When Malena's opened, we were pretty pumped - good food (for the most part) that was cheap as all hell. That was, until, the day I got the chicken tacos. A few hours later, they came back up with a vengence. I remember that "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" was playing on TV, and the puke just kept coming. NEVER eat here, unless you like dry heaving at 3 in the morning. **Updated 5/4/2008* This place caught on fire yesterday. Looks like they finally learned to cook the chicken more. Maybe a bit too much more.

    (1)
  • J R R.

Horrible! That is the only way to describe my chili releno. It was submerged in a bland watery sauce, and smothered by a large quanity of blanched celery. My rice was completely overcooked and the beans were disgusting. Lesson learned ... I ain't never going back! JR

Well... Malena's... what can I say? It's hard, you know, having spent so much time in southern California and then comparing our Mexican cuisine, just doesn't cut it. With such proximity to my home, I was really hoping to love Malena's. We both tried the fish tacos and rice + beans combination. The tacos were fine I suppose, pre-breaded, ultra-mass commercial-tasting white fish with some veggies on top. Definitely far from spectacular. The rice and beans were straight sad, sloppy, overly chewy, and just not worth the investment. The straight-from-the-bag chips were not tasty, which was quite a shame considering that the salsa tasted fresh and homemade, actually, the best part of the meal, by far. Darn my curiosity, I had to try the guacamole, the ancient test.... FAIL! It tasted like the guac spread you probably wouldn't buy at the grocery store, unless, of course, you're into that sort of thing (not that there's anything wrong with that... get it?). Terrible guac. Pass on that. I probably will not return to Malena's, given that there are just better tacos to be had within a few blocks. Not terrible, just not my style. Thanks for listening.

Best mexican in seattle...coming from arizona, I gave some pretty high standards..this place rocks! They only take cash, but theres a bank of america next door. The staff is super friendly, service it's fast, and I always leave full..a must stop hole in the wall place in ballard!

  • Sandra S.

I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about even trying Malena's. The few times I had driven by, there were few, if none as far as happy diners populating the place. There is nothing that deflects me faster than an empty dining room during prime eating hours... I have been known to pull up to a place, get out, and bolt as soon as spying the emptiness inside! However, my love of Mexican food overcame my initial apprehension and I was pleasantly surprised. The food is by no means rave-worthy, but it's very decent if you are looking for a step up from Taco Bell and an alternative to the gloppy bean/congealed cheese on everything mess that serves as typical "Mexican" fare (which I do love sometimes, sadly, I grew up on Azteca. I have a birthday picture with sombrero from birthday #8-25). The tamales are home made, and although not overwhelmingly flavorful, they are enjoyable in their own mis-shapen right. The chicken tacos have fried corn tortillas as the shell which gives it a satisfying and substantial crunch. Chicken was a little dry, but squeeze some lime on it or douse it in salsa. I like the simple whole beans and rice, they leave me delightfully satisfied but without the feeling as if I've just ingested a stick of lard. They sometimes need a good dousing of salsa if you're looking for some kick. The ambiance? Sometimes good for people-watching, and I did watch the wife of the owner resist her husband's urgings to get off of the phone which she was animatedly talking... but I might suggest just getting your food to go. It's pretty barren in there. And two more things, try the horchata and avoid the burritos...

sure this place is a dive... but you know what... it's good. You get alot for the price... and it's cheap! :) I try to hit the QA or Ballard location when I venture to the Seattle. The staff is friendly and the food is tasty. Malena's is a lifesaver! :)

This is a hard one for me. Overall I am happy with Malena's. the food is fairly fresh and authentic, the service is fast, and it is consistent. There are no shortage of problems though. I have repeatedly had problems with orders. I live in Ballard and this is one of my favorite stop and pick up diner on the way home joints. Every time I get the food home there is something missing or mixed up. I TRY to check my order but without digging to the bottom of my tostada it is hard to tell if they are hiding beef under the beans! My other big complaint is that the food is cold. Items like cheese enchiladas are rarely fully cooked or even melted and everything is totally cold in the 5 minutes it take for me to get them in my mouth. The food is tasty though and a steal for the price. I especially enjoy the previously mentioned tostadas which are huge! I will keep going back to Malena's and I will do so with a smile. But I know what to expect now and I try not set my sights too high here. I just have to keep reminding myself to keep it simple and have the microwave ready when I get home!

I will disclose up front- I am from San Francisco and I am spoiled to the best Latin food from the Mission district in the City! SO my search continues for GREAT Latin/Mexican food in the greater Seattle area. That being said, Malena's is OK...... the rice was dry, beans lacked any pizzazz. The salsa, um, was ok, but they skimped on the container. The soft tacos- were the perfect size, beef was dry and not super flavorful, the rest of the taco toppings were good, guac. was tasteful. Yup, it's cash only-ugg, NO beer...that's a mistake. Beer and Mexican food yum! The hunt continues for me, as Seattle is my new home and that ROCKS!!!!!

    (3)
  • Kim N.

i ordered and the food came out with the quickness. which was perfect considering i was catching a flight back to San Francisco, and needed something fast. what wasn't perfect though was my fajitas i ordered. oily much? nothing tastes better then a pool of grease under your steak, bell peppers, and onions... NOT. and the tortillas were not crackin' at all. actually, i take that back. they were totally crackin' (not in a good way), only cause they were STALE. yuck. on a better note, the great worker gave me a bowl of guacamole with out charge. wished i left Seattle on a better food note, rather then leaving with an upset stomach from all that grease.

We go to Malenas alot. It's one of those places that you go to because you don't want to go to Taco Time but you also don't want to drive all the way to Wallingford to go to Chilli Pepper (which is AMAZING by the way.. try the chile rellenos!!!!). Malenas is affordable and pretty delicious. Chips from a bag which is a let down. I like the home-made ones. Salsa tastes home made but could be canned, which I only suspect because of the bagged chips. I usually go with something like the carne asada burrito which is HUGE and a side of sour cream. Other dishes come with rice and beans wich are just OK. The service last time I went wasn't so great. The lady served us fine and then proceeded to talk (loudly) on her cell phone the whole time we were there and I actually saw her ringing up new customers while on her phone. Cell phones are a HUGE pet peeve of mine. Driving, working, etc, cell phone should be put away. So 3 stars. I go here all the time and will contine to do so.

  • Tina H.

their chips suck. i mean, i thought mexican restaurants are supposed to have those nice thin, triangular, slightly greasy, nice & salty tortilla chips, not the thick round ones you get at like, say, the movie theater that comes with cheese from a pump. but whatever. their guacamole made up for it. i have a hard time finding good guacamole in seattle. i also like how the building is sort of dumpy.

  • Leslee T.

Perfect place for that much needed hangover meal! The tacos are amazing. Everything is so fresh, and tastes so good. My husband had this burrito with different kinds of meat... it was HUGE and he ate it all. It is cash only, but cheap. The service was great! It was our first time going there and the woman was more than happy to talk through the menu with us and let us know her favorites!

I popped into Malena's one day when I was craving Mexican. I had never noticed it and saw it and thought to myself, "Hey, this looks like a little undiscovered-off-the-beaten-path-in-Ballard place." I was a little shocked when I spent almost ten dollars for a side of guac and carne asada tacos. My thought then once I paid was, well maybe these tacos are to die for. They were not. They didn't taste BAD by any means but for the price, they should have been a lot better or included another taco. I was not impressed with the obvious store bought cheese (I swear I have the same Kraft Monterrey jack in my fridge). I thought it was nice to give a big basket of chips but they were store bought as well. The guac was ok but bland. Definitely will not be returning. For the type of place and atmosphere provided it needs to be cheaper.

I was running an errand in Ballard last night so I stopped at Malena's and picked up some tacos and burritos for my hungry family. The woman behind the counter (I hope it wasn't Malena herself) acted like she could have cared less that I was there--even though the place was empty. Since I was starving I asked for some chips and salsa while I waited. The chips were stale and the salsa was about as uninspired as my reception. After a long drive home in a car filled with the aroma of shredded beef, pork and chicken I was more than ready to eat. Surprise. The food was good. Not great, but good. My beef Asada tacos were juicy and had a nice guacamole filling--in a leatherette shell. The shredded pork tacos were also moist and yummy--also in leatherette shells. My son and his girlfriend consumed their chicken burritos with much gusto then went back to ignoring us...so I think they liked the food. I have to assume that some of the staleness of the taco shells was induced by the long trip home...over water? I would have given Malena's three stars if I had received even one smile while I was there.

Picked up chicken and shredded beef soft tacos on a whim for me and the bf. I had the chicken ones -- the chicken was nicely seasoned and all the toppings seemed fresh. The beef ones were not as good -- the meat was bland and a little dry. The salsa could use a little more kick, and although I didn't dine-in I saw the chips and they definitely looked like Tostitos Rounds -- not cool! I'd go back again because the prices are reasonable and there are a few other things on the menu that I'd wanna give a try.

Malena's is great! I love the chicken tostada. Their Bean & Cheese burrito is delicious. We always get an order of the rolled chicken tacos which are just like taquitos. They used to come with a heap of guacamole but they don't put as much on them as they used to. Overall, great quick Mexican food. Everything has always tasted very fresh. The one downside is in the past few months they stopped taking credit card and are cash only.

My husband and I have a standing Saturday lunch date at Malena's. We love the food -- fresh, hot, delicious! And we adore the service and atmosphere. We're treated as old friends. Our favorites: Carne asada plate and fish tacos!

    (4)
  • Karen A.

Malena's is totally back in my good graces! I've always loved their tacos, and the pork and the shredded beef are some of the best in north Seattle. But for a while they went to serving, heavy, tasteless store-bought tortilla chips and that just ruined the experience for me. After I asked, twice, for them to considered returning to homemade chips, I stopped eating there. But this week I stopped by and delicious, light, warm homemade chips are back! And the pork in the soft tacos was tastier and crispier than ever. So, once again, this is one of my top choices for a quick inexpensive lunch in Ballard.

"I was always curious of this little place until today. I was always a bit shy about going here because I never saw many people inside. I quickly looked over the menu (i was hungry!) and chose the chicken burrito for $6.50. They gave free chips and salsa which was a plus. The burrito showed up shortly after and was a generous size. I would have liked to have real silverware but the plastic fork and knife did the trick. The burrito was tasty, lots of chicken and green bell peppers made for a nice twist. I left full and satisfied and would definately come back."

  • Jon G.

Looked like a promising unpretentious taco joint but a big let down. Suffers from the lack of all spice that is too common in Seattle Mexican places (and I'm from the East so my standards aren't too high). The burrito tasted like canned, unflavored ingredients stuffed in a bland tortilla

    (2)
  • Steven B.

typical, awful seattle mexican food... what kinda place has pico de gallo without jalapenos in it?! store bought, disgusting guacamole.. i heard mexicans in the kitchen but, apparently they sold their soul to the bland, white devil.

This place has average food, but TERRIBLE SERVICE. The people behind the counter are rude and don't greet you. Plus, they let their kids run around the place. It's unprofessional, and they act like they don't need your business. I've been in there two or three times, and it's always the same. DO NOT go here. Average food and cold people.

  • MissMaryAnn D.

The food was fresh and good - except for the crisp taco shells - a bit stale. As far as I'm concerned, a taco is served in a corn tortilla unless specified otherwise. That is the default. Crisp shell tacos are wrong - those are Betty Crocker Tacos.... This Nordic Mexican food is so annoying. The beans were flavorful, although no refried option. The rice was also seasoned nicely and not too wet as many Mexican places seem to do. The meat was tasty, but a bit dry. We ate our tacos and enchiladas off our paper plates and left, not too impressed but full. Horchata was fine - I had it with no ice, so perhaps that is why it seemed too sweet to me. Also, it needed more canela, which I will give them props for using instead of cinnamom. We ordered Burrittos to go for dinner later. Honestly - this place is okay, but it is no where near what a San Franciscan would expect from a Burritto. First of all, it ain't even wrapped - it's on a plate, the only burritos allowed on a plate are mojado. Second, it had only meat in it.... not rice, no beans, WHY WHY WHY????? The only reason why Mexican food spolied San Franciscans might be happy about this place is because the ingredients are prepared properly and it is miles and miles ahead of the Taco Del Mars, Taco Times and all the horrible Taco Bellesque type of swill that dares to call itself Mexican food around here. I'd go again if I were in the neighborhood and needed somethng quick and to go, but it isn't gonna get this homesick for real mexican food girl outta the house on it's own. DISCLAIMER: I have a Mexican Grandmother who fed me really well"

I really wanted to like Malena's. It is nearby, affordable and I pretty much enjoy all Mexican food. I ordered the chicken enchiladas and only could take a few bites. The chicken was just not right. I have never met a chicken enchilada I didnt like!

I really like the Burritos, not sure about the Tacos. You can call orders in too, which is a plus.

A co-worker brought back tacos from this place at lunchtime and spent the next half hour fending the rest of us off. "Can I have a bite, huh, pretty please?" We turned into a drooling mob of 4 year olds. Not pretty. After that, I regularly got the carne asada tacos or shredded beef tacos. Frankly, after eating a burrito once, all I wanted to do was nap the rest of the day away, it's so big and filling. My employers didn't really appreciate that.

Yet another really good place for tacos (so rare up here!). I stumbled across this place sometime in the afternoon after I went swimming with some friends and we descended upon it like a pack of wild hyenas, well .. but more polite. Either way, just after one big burrito I was full, and almost groaning because I ate the whole thing. Bring a big appetite or expect to be taking some home!

Really good Mexican food at totally reasonable prices. Malena's is definitely best enjoyed as takeout, because the restaurant itself has no atmosphere whatsoever, and I really hate eating with plastic utensils. Otherwise, awesome.

I lived in SF for 10 years so that qualifies me as a native, at least in Mexican food, and this joint would be able to survive somewhere in the Bay. That says alot considering how many taquieras there are in SF alone. I like hardshell tacos, something that most people don't do well at all, and Malena's makes a great, crisp chicken taco. There beef is just so-so but I'm not a huge beef taco fan so...

  • Amber P.

My birth right as a San Diegan is to be hypercritical/borderline obnoxious about the quality of taco shop food. I'm happy to report that I can't criticize much at all here!! Rule of thumb is that I will like the place of they call their "taquitos" rolled tacos and these guys do and they were delicious. I think they were even rolled and fried to order. At least they tasted that way. I also got shredded beef hard tacos and those were perfecto too. Only complaint is their salsa could be spicier.

This is, by far, the best taco shop in Seattle. The beef tacos (#2 on the menu, ordered crispy) are truly amazing- the best $8 you'll ever spend. The plates have just a little more care put into them than the average taco shop in the price range- the pinto beans are freshly sprinkled with cheese, the tacos are fried until crisp and then have fresh lettuce, tomato, and cheese stuffed into them, and a generous scoop of guacamole comes with your food. The staff is also so friendly and they bring your food to the table- a great mix of indoor taco stand (ie Capitol Hill's Rancho Bravo) and small 'family' restaurant. Downsides- this place is always freezing (who cares? But bring a sweater), and I once saw the guy working wash windows, take orders, and then serve food all without changing his gloves- but you don't come to a place like this for their food safety practices. The food is excellent and that's what matters.

Get. The. Guacamole. On a burrito. With the chips. In a bowl all by itself. Rub it on your skin. I won't judge. It's the holy green grail. Creamy dreamy fresh garlicky goodness. With el camion right up the street, one might drive by malena's without a second thought. DO NOT make that mistake! The price point, flavors, free chips (if you sit down & eat), and guacamole (have I mentioned that yet?) make it a mexican must have. The service is speedy, the spices authentic, and the combo plates are the perfect size for a big lunch or filling dinner. It's a clean place with a relaxed, no-frills atmosphere (most of the clientele are local construction workers, after all). Skip the taco truck--malena's puts all competition to shame.

So, I live and work a stone's throw from Malena's. And I get HANGRY for cheese and onion enchiladas as often as the average hypoglycemic vegetarian. Their enchiladas are amazing, in that way food always is when you're about to bite somebody from low blood sugar. It isn't particularly healthy, 'local,' or any of that business. It is a sit down restaurant with taco shop prices. Given that Pecado Bueno and even Taco Del Mar are taco shops with healthy, probably locally made drinking straws, you can find better. But sometimes, you just want a Mexican coke from a tiny family restaurant where people know your name. I vote for the Malena's world at least once a week. Make no sudden movements until I've actually eaten my food.

The food is ok, but their hours are erratic. They close when they want irrespective of their posted hours. The hours say they are open until 9:00, but don't depend on this.

Malenas has some of the best carne Asada tacos in the Seattle area on the cheap. Each Malenas has a different salsa, the Ballard one is smooth with the perfect amount of kick. They now accept cards and the service is great. (There was a woman who was rude but I think she got fired for sucking at her job) Keep it up.

No complaints with Malen'a Taco's. A nice little taco shop in Ballard that is locally owned. Malena's has competitive prices, large portions and a small dining room. They provide a basket of chips if you dine in, but the serving size with this is exceptionally small (but they are free). The chicken is full of flavor and the staff shows great team work and a hard work ethic. The inside is also very clean though dated. Recommend this as a great local business.

I moved to Seattle from Arizona 2 years ago, and have been on the hunt for a delicious, reasonably priced taco shop like the ones back home ever since. If you're looking for some cool place with low lighting and atmospheric music to take a date, head over to Matador. But if you want tasty, fast, and cheap Mexican food - this is the spot. The burritos are big and awesome. Everything tastes fresh and authentic.

Nice staff. Fresh food. Cash only. I'm still searching for good old fashioned oily as all get out deep fried tacos. Their effort is alright. I like the rolled tacos better. The quantity of the sides you get on a combo plate is a bit light. It is fairly pricey for what you're getting, but the food quality is fresh and delicious. Parking is better on Monday thru Thursday after 6pm.

I used to like this place, until I watched my food being made and handled by a young woman without any gloves on while she kept scratching her face and playing on her cell phone. I can't get over this so I will not be back. My advice, sit in a seat which faces the kitchen to witness yourself.

The picadillo tacos were delicious, well spiced and they were made at the time I ordered, so I know they were fresh. Guac was good and I liked the fact that you got the chips and salsa with the meal. I felt it was a bit expensive, but not too bad. The salsa was kind of bland with the chips, but somehow was amazing on the tacos. No complaints here, I would go there again, but maybe next time with a coupon. :)

This place is pretty good. me and my girlfriend were walking around Ballard and stumbled upon this place. I ordered the Carne Asada Burrito and it was really good. It reminded me of one I would get from a food truck. The meat was marinated nicely and was very flavorful. I would not mind stopping in again.

Malena's is a solid taqueria. It's not super fancy. It is inexpensive. It's pretty quick. And the food tastes good. I've really got no complaints. Also, the plates are a really good deal. I got the Pollo Asado plate and it was SO MUCH food, and the chicken was really tasty. I honestly think two people could split one of those.

  • Ted W.

Its not perfect, but the food tastes good, the salsa is great and the chips are free is you eat there. I love the rolled tacos (But tell them not to put Parmesan cheese on them, still not sure why they do that). Beans have good flavor and again the salsa is tasty.

  • Stephanie K.

This place was delicious! I had the asada tacos and they were delightfully fresh tasting. My only complaint was that there was waaaaaaay too much guac up in my tacos. I'm not a huge guac fan so it made me gag a little. I scraped most of it off and it was much better! The service was fast. It is a very casual place where you pay cash, and you eat your basket of tacos. All in all, I will be back, and I will say "No GUAC" next time!

  • Dale H.

Just out walking around at night and I run into this gem. It was empty, but that never bothers me much...I had pork tacos on housemade tortillas. I felt like I was back in Mexico! The salsas had so much flavor, but I didn't put salsa on two tacos because the meat was so delicious on its own! I live close enough to PDX, but I usually stick with food carts. Now I have a great Mexican joint to go to. Ill be bringing people here next time!

I love Malena's! I was always a little bummed they didn't take cards but they just started accepting them! I always get a chile relleno and I'm never disappointed. Their tortillas are always really good. I always go to Malena's when I'm craving Mexican because it's pretty cheap and right in the neighborhood! There's not really any parking except a parking lot you have to pay in, but I think the food is definitely worth it!!! The dishes are big, so you're definitely getting your money's worth.

Awful!!! Wow I spent $11.00 and could've bought a better TV dinner. The cheese enchiladas were over salty, tortillas were barely warmed up. I used to really like this place but I think they changed owners. I'll never be back.

Great local taco shop. Think taco truck that you can sit inside and eat at. I ordered a bunch of food one Saturday. I assumed it was the owner cooking and his daughters working the front. Very nice and polite service. Some of the order was for me to eat there, and a togo order for my wife who was busy at home. They had no issues delaying to togo so hers stayed warm longer. Shredded pork tacos were great. Shredded carnitas type pork and LOTS of it. Also tried the tamales, pretty good for tamales. I've been spoiled by co-workers "Grandma" made tamales, but I'd definitely eat them again. Only bummer is cash only, just have to hit the ATM first.

This small local taqueria in Ballard is where the workers grab lunch. Not fancy but clean, good solid Mexican food & just what you expect. Fish tacos delicious; friends rave about carnitas. Cook & server always helpful and pleasant.

  • Ashley H.

I wasn't impressed. I've eaten here twice and both times my food was cold when served. The restaurant was nowhere near busy so I see no excuse for that to happen twice. I will say that the staff is friendly and the prices are all cheap. Not worth the trip in my opinion.

  • Tyler L.

cash or check only...ok. It's been years since I've had to write a check for tacos. food sub par. Americanized guac if that's what you could call it. not my favorite, I'd prefer a 2.00 side of guac be fresh avocados. I've eaten here three times, can't say I'm impressed for the price point. although being vegetarian I'm limited with their menu...veggie tacos are literally lettuce, tomatoes and beans? was hoping for some grilled "veggies" maybe?! it's walking distance and on the way home from the library and it humors my little guy for a simple bean and cheese burrito so we won't x it off our occasional visit list.

Tacos are great but nothing compared to others I've been to. The tacos taste good but lack the authentic Mexican taste. Another disappointment is that they only take cash; which I never carry around. This will be a great alternative if I wasn't able to make a pit stop to my 2 faves.

  • Barry R.

A hidden gem. This is as authentic Mexican as you can get in Seattle (there is one other place in Edmonds). I have lived all over the country, and the only place in the US that serves high quality Mexican is in San Diego. This shop is up there!! The tacos are just superb and the salsa's are homemade and delicious. I highly recommend. Atmosphere is lacking a bit, but its cute and worth going.

  • Stephanie M.

Malena's looks like an authentic Mexican restaurant from the outside, but it's really more like an indoor taco stand. I ordered the shrimp tacos combo plate and my boyfriend ordered the carne asada tacos combo plate, both which were under $7. Prices are very cheap here! The "entrees" are MUCH better quality than the sides (rice, beans, chips) so almost better to just avoid the combo plates alltogether. Lastly, they only accept cash and check. Weird.

    (3)
  • Alex H.

best thing to get here imo is the shrimp taco. they batter and fry the large shrimp and make a pretty big taco with delicious slaw. I tried the carne asada two times and both times it was very dry. quesadillas are nothing special.

  • Rebecca K.

SO GOOD!!!!!! The rolled tacos with guacamole were simply delicious! Then I took a bite of a shrimp taco and it was like a flavor explosion... far more tasty than I initially thought it would be for a small little joint, but now I know why every time I drive by there is ALWAYS someone in there eating. Also tried a bite of a chimichanga and it is a definite MUST ORDER for next time! The prices are so affordable and the food is cooked up quick with some really good salsa and chips to satiate your hunger while you wait. Heads up, cash or check only but hey, let's help the little guy and not let them get raked over by big banks! I will be back asap and will probably end up a lifer.

    (4)
  • Mark S.

Cash or check only. The food wasn't good, Taco Bell has better food. Small portions for the price of the tacos. All of the food had no flavor. I'd say for the money Taco Bell would be a better choice.

i'm giving it two stars because the first two times i came went from delicious i'll come again to dry , i might come back if i'm feeling nice, the third time, well, I won't be coming back. Ordered pollo a la creama. AZTECA is better! I thought this place was good. I mean service is great but my food was burnt. The chicken was little hard pieces and there was no CREAM. That's what crema means! Creamy! It was dry and thrown with lots of peppers to add taste that it lacked definetly. I recieved one burnt soggy tortilla that wouldn't pull apart because it was put in the foil too fast before it had cooled down. Guacamole and salsa is okay, but I regret tipping them after withdrawling cash and having to pay 3$ bucks ATM FEE since they are too cheap to take credit cards, it's 2013 people!

I really wanted to love this place. We came in when it was close to closing for the night and they didn't seemed miffed about our orders (which was nice!) - they have great, friendly service! - but the food was terrible. I had a shrimp burrito and they fried the shrimp and it was tasteless and inedible. We had been to Malena's a few times before and to date have never had decent food there. I suppose it's time to give up.

  • Tony G.

Pretty damn good tacos if you ask me. I love the homemade shells and the chicken was pretty flavorful. The rice and beans were also pretty good. Also you get a free basket of chips and delicious salsa. All this delicious food for a pretty decent price. I will have to take my girlfriend here to try to impress her. Zipzap Zubidy Bop!

I went to Malena's on a Sunday to grab a bite for lunch. I'd been to the one on Queen Anne and remembered that the food was good. I'd have to say this Ballard location is OK. The staff is nice, and the place is very clean. I'm not sure what was missing, but the chicken tostada was a little on the bland side. It wasn't bad--it just wasn't amazingly good. There are so many options within this area of Ballard--I'd definitely choose something else the next time I'm looking to grab a quick bite.

Ordered the carne asada with guacamole burrito, and was surprised to find it was a tortilla filled with small diced beef, onion, green bell pepper and cilantro. No rice, no beans, no cheese. There may have been some guac smeared in there. Maybe this is authentic and I don't know enough to appreciate it, but I like some rice and beans in my burrito. I can't complain about the generosity because it was a lot of meat, but I did not enjoy it and couldn't finish it. My mouth tasted like burp all afternoon.

Whoa!! It seems that nobody here likes Malena's? Well, I run a business on Market street and we are pretty strapped for quick food that is cheap and good. So, enter Malena's.... I have been there a million times and take everyone who comes in there. All of my bands go there for food and everyone loves it! The hard tacos are $2.25 and I am hard pressed to find someone who can eat 2 of them.. If you sit, you get free chips and salsa.. So for under $5 you have a full meal which is pretty good. Some of the better tacos I have had in town.. I was legitimately sad when it burned down.. I was... :( When I drove past and it was open again.. I felt like a young boy on Christmas morning.. Maybe its worth trying again and getting some cheap chicken hard tacos...

Everything else I've had at Malena's has been great - the fish tacos are not. Do not order! The carne asada is delicious and my friend loves the chicken tacos, but stay away from the fish!

    (4)
  • Mark M.

This food is very authentic. The carne asada burrito is filled with carne asada not rice and beans which other restaurants use as filler so that they don't have to use as much meat. The beans and rice ordered separately are my kids" favorite. I have been there multiple times and have not had a bad meal yet. This is authentic Mexican food and this authentic Mexican-American will be back for more.

Ordered a chicken burrito. Something you can't screw up. I got a flavorless pile of shredded chicken, with onions and bell peppers...no rice or beans in a burrito? Terrible, flavorless, and overpriced. I'll stick to the taco vans that have AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD FOR A REALLY GOOD PRICE!

    (1)
  • James S.

This is the kind of place that explains why people from San Francisco, LA, Denver, etc say Seattle has terrible Mexican food, and why mediocre taco trucks are considered "good Mexican food" here. If Malenas were to open in any of the above cities, it wouldn't last a week. The burrito looked and tasted like a bad experiment made with generic safeway ingredients by someone who knows very little about Mexican food. The tortilla was flavorless and cardboard-like, the burrito was filled with undercooked bell peppers and bland meat. The taco was a notch better, althought that isn't saying much - it was still totally bland and flavorless. I

  • Alex S.

Everything is amazing! The sauces are just the right consistency and amount, not overbearing. The tacos are filled with meat and again, the right amount of ingredients so they look good and can be eaten without falling apart. Only thing the place is missing is beer and margaritas!

Cash and Check only. There, I just saved you the embarrassment. Fresh, tasty and somewhat affordable. This is one of my favorite authentic mexican restaurants. The chicken taco leaves something to be desired (why is there grated parmesan cheese on here?), and the carne asada is a little dry. Not my favorites. The pork tacos, on the other hand, are simply incredible. Probably some of the best carnitas I've ever had. I can't tell you enough, just how tasty the pork tacos are. The carnitas are perfectly seasoned, perfectly cooked (with a slightly crisp layer) and perfectly matched with fresh guacamole, chopped onions, cilantro, tomatoes and lettuce. The only thing they could use to make them better, is a bit of fresh, squeezed lime. The rice and beans aren't my favorite (the beans are very soupy), but it is authentic. Hit or miss, in my opinion. That money would be better spent towards another taco. The salsa is another stand-out. It's very fresh-tasting and sweet. While the chips aren't homemade (what a shame, but understandable), I have to imagine that the salsa is. If not, I'd like to know where they buy it. Either way, the combination of their salsa and guacamole on a single chip is quite tasty. I recommend getting a few pork tacos for lunch. The chicken quesadilla isn't too bad, either. Service is quick and painless. This is a great place to go for your lunch break. The only real downside (besides lack of credit card options) is the parking. The lot behind the store only has room for three spots; even then, they are extremely cramped and inconvenient. Prepare for street parking. In sum, Malenas Taco Shop is awesome, and you should totally go and grab a few pork tacos, right now.

Malena's reminds me of my own personal cooking. When my food is good, it is amazing. However, when its bad it is down right disgusting. They have AMAZING fish tacos. However, they can be a little inconsistent with flavor. A few times they have been way too salty and other times they are perfectly seasoned. Sucks to get too salty fish taco when you are really hungry but when the chance of getting a great fish taco is worth the gamble.

Just like everyone is saying - the carne asada tacos rule. My buddies got there at 8:40 and were told (even though they're open until 9) that they had to get it to go - bullroar. But whatever...the wafting aroma of deliciousness for 15 blocks proved worth it, with a great texture to the soft shell action (not soggy?? but how?!). Tasty beef, with guac?? Nice. I will definitely be back, but leery to stray from the homerun of a first choice.

Malena's has re-opened. Great food, great prices. LOVE their salso. The chips are store bought but who cares, the salsa is where the money is at. Pretty standard taqueria fare and what I've had (taco's, burrito) has been great. Good stuff.

Horrible! That is the only way to describe my chili releno. It was submerged in a bland watery sauce, and smothered by a large quanity of blanched celery. My rice was completely overcooked and the beans were disgusting. Lesson learned ... I ain't never going back! JR

  • Kim N.

i ordered and the food came out with the quickness. which was perfect considering i was catching a flight back to San Francisco, and needed something fast. what wasn't perfect though was my fajitas i ordered. oily much? nothing tastes better then a pool of grease under your steak, bell peppers, and onions... NOT. and the tortillas were not crackin' at all. actually, i take that back. they were totally crackin' (not in a good way), only cause they were STALE. yuck. on a better note, the great worker gave me a bowl of guacamole with out charge. wished i left Seattle on a better food note, rather then leaving with an upset stomach from all that grease.

Looked like a promising unpretentious taco joint but a big let down. Suffers from the lack of all spice that is too common in Seattle Mexican places (and I'm from the East so my standards aren't too high). The burrito tasted like canned, unflavored ingredients stuffed in a bland tortilla

typical, awful seattle mexican food... what kinda place has pico de gallo without jalapenos in it?! store bought, disgusting guacamole.. i heard mexicans in the kitchen but, apparently they sold their soul to the bland, white devil.

    (4)
  • Rodney K.

  • Mex S.

Awful!!! Wow I spent $11.00 and could've bought a better TV dinner. The cheese enchiladas were over salty, tortillas were barely warmed up. I used to really like this place but I think they changed owners. I'll never be back.

  • Tim T.

I wasn't impressed. I've eaten here twice and both times my food was cold when served. The restaurant was nowhere near busy so I see no excuse for that to happen twice. I will say that the staff is friendly and the prices are all cheap. Not worth the trip in my opinion.

    (2)
  • Tyler L.

cash or check only...ok.

    (3)

    (1)
  • Brittany B.

i'm giving it two stars because the first two times i came went from delicious i'll come again to dry , i might come back if i'm feeling nice, the third time, well, I won't be coming back.

Great place. Cheap and delicious, I recommend the carne asada dinner plate. Comes with free chips and salsa if you eat in. Their flan dessert is great too!

  • Justin W.

  • Enriquito A.

    (2)
  • Michael H.

Two stars because it was just bad, not disgusting. My enchiladas combo (one chicken, one cheese, rice, and pinto beans) was uninspired, boring, and dry. Didn't bother finishing it. But maybe that's because I ate too many of the chips-from-a-bag beforehand. And I don't know what other reviews mean about "affordable" when what I paid should have bought something a lot better. And it would have at Gordito's or Taco del Mar. But the girl at the counter was super nice!

    (2)
  • Neil R.

Been to Malena's a lot and it is average. The food, for the most part is mediocre. I will give Malena a high-five for her salsa and chili relleno burrito. The carne asada is also pretty good. Otherwise not much to write about. There are plenty of other tastier taco options.

    (3)

    (1)
  • Matt J.

Malena's has re-opened. Great food, great prices. LOVE their salso. The chips are store bought but who cares, the salsa is where the money is at. Pretty standard taqueria fare and what I've had (taco's, burrito) has been great. Good stuff.

Love Malena's - Don't change a thing! It is perfect for what they are - a local awesome hole in the wall kind of place. If you have expectations for anything else you will be disappointed. Adobada Burrito is my staple. Delicious marinated pork, guacamole in the burrito and easily big enough to share with the free chips and salsa. The chips are not store bought as I've seen them being made in the back and the house salsa is great as well. Everyone has always been super nice at both QA and the Ballard location.

Definitely not horrible, but just not memorable either. Just kinda mediocre in my opinion. Maybe some of the meat menu items would be better, but the veggie burrito did not do anything for me. With so many other options around, I doubt I'll be back here

Pretty much as described by other reviews. Really enjoyed my food. Rice and beans were simple but good.

Other reviews have stated that the tacos are greasy--really greasy. I like the taste of fat as much as the next guy, but I don't like it gushing out of my taco. Specifically, I had a carnitas taco. I have had better in Seattle, which is not saying much.

Well... Malena's... what can I say?

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
