I've been to many Indian restaurants but this one is the best. Really good menu and whenever we drank a little water they would fill it up. The waiter is nice and this has a good family atmosphere.I prefer this for Indian food.

Buffet Indian food at lunchtime. Not enough spread and frankly a dinghy dirty restaurant. Food is oily and doesn't taste fresh. No item in the buffet will want you to go back for more.

Great location, interesting vibe, spicy was how I liked it which is "SPICY. ". Great naan bread

Average food and bad service. It was Saturday lunch time and I was the only customer. Ordered veg thali. The food was average quality. The owner was also serving and was slow and apathetic. He did not even bring dessert in the end that comes with thali. I was so disgusted with the treatment there that I did not even ask for it. I would avoid it.

Eat at Maharaja at your own risk! Let me first say I LOVE Indian food and I can be quite forgiving, I gave this place three attempts! I tried the buffet once and it was one of the most terrible buffets I have ever had (any kind of food, not just Indian). The other two times I tried to get Chicken tikka marsala which is one of my favorite dishes on the planet and until Maharja I had never had a bad version of it. The color was off, the taste was off and both times I couldn't finish it was so bad. I really really REALLY wanted to like this place as I live a couple blocks away and was excited to have a local Indian place to eat at on a weekly basis. However I can't say anything nice about this place, I am hoping someone will buy them out or they will bring in someone to clean up their menu and they really need a lesson in cleanliness! This place is a prime candidate for Kitchen Nightmares!

We were walking in Yesler Square and came upon their lunch buffet sign on the corner. I have to say, the buffet was really good! The Chicken Curry, rice, naan, and other foods were just what I expected! Not a huge selection, but very good for the price! $7.00 for the lunch buffet is extremely reasonable. Thank you!

Service was horrible. Never been treated with such disrespect. Forgot to give groupon to owner at the end of the meal. Ended up paying the full cost with credit. Tried to see if we can get it fixed, but the owner became hostile and aggressive and told us to leave the restaurant.

Ordered from Eat24, where they are listed as Madhu, not Maharaja. I've had delivery from Madhu several times, although it's been a couple years, but both the food and the service were great every time. How this place is getting away with masquerading as Madhu on Eat24, GrubHub, etc., is a mystery, and the only reason I ordered the food to begin with was because I was misled to believe I was ordering from a place I've ordered from in the past and enjoyed. The two dishes I received today were absolutely not worth the $20 minimum required for delivery. Butter chicken was watery and flavorless, and the meat was gristly; it was literally the worst butter chicken I've ever had. I didn't even want it after the first couple of bites, and that's a first for me with butter chicken. The bindhi had no heat even though I'd asked for it "hot," but otherwise it was ok, I guess. I've definitely had a lot better, but unlike the butter chicken at least it was edible. The driver ignored the detailed directions I provided for delivery, which is super annoying. Pro tip: when a customer takes the extra time to give directions to their residence, just follow them. They were provided for a reason.

Well, I'm not sick. Upon entering, the owner waived me over to a table with dirty plates and no silverware. I put my coat down and went to the buffet. Small and half empty, the buffet had a weak selection. Several serving spoons and tongs had fallen into the dishes, so patrons were certainly sticking their fingers in the food. I looked around and the place was packed. If folks were getting sick, they were still coming back! I hunkered down and scanned the buffet for a safe dish. Fortunately, they had chicken tikka masala, so I was set. Back at the table, there was no change. The owner was pouring water for folks and the dirty plates and spilled food were still on the table. I grabbed my coat and went to a clean table. The chicken tasted odd. Undercooked or perhaps old. The tikka masala sauce was tasty, at least. This place has way too many drawbacks for me to do my customary second visit before writing them off for good. I definitely do not recommend.

Notes on Maharaja: * Good for lunch buffet * Mondays and Friday's their buffet is only $6 (cash) or $7 (card) normally $8.95 * Buffet is decent - several options * Naan I didn't care for. Pretty bland and some was a bit dried out * Chicken dishes were good - very flavorful but FOUND BONES in the chunks...almost cut my mouth! * Beef curry dish was great and just the right amount of spice * Several vegetarian dishes (pinto beans, garbanzo dish...all plain) I did not care for outside of the potatoes * Staff is prompt to get you seated and keep your water filled. * Good, quick meal * Smaller than many Indian buffets, but good deal if you go during one of their special days

Super cheap lunch buffet, I think it was $8 a person and good for someone who is on a quick lunch break. It was a bank holiday the day that I went in, so maybe that was why it was empty?! Small selection of food but everything put out was really delicious and I will definitely go back.

After reading the horrible reviews of Maharaja we were skeptical, but we decided to give it a try. We ate there twice - both times we were the only ones in the restaurant. The first time my fiancé and I ordered from the menu. He had chicken vindaloo ordered medium - it was good, the spice level was mild for a traditionally spicy dish. I had the chicken tikka masala ordered hot - it was incredibly mild (think tomato soup). The food was not as we ordered it, service was okay, and overall the food wasn't bad. The second time we went in for the lunch buffet. They have a special Mondays and Fridays - $6 + tax if you pay cash. We went in and the three men sitting behind the counter didn't acknowledge we were there. We got our plates of food, and discovered that everything had been sitting there for hours, and the sauces had been watered down. The food was terrible. We got through one plate and decided to call it quits. I walked to the counter to pay - the total was $13.20 and I gave him a $20. He demanded 20 cents, and I told him I didn't have it. He then slapped 6 dollars on the counter with 1 quarter and 3 nickels. I told him that it wasn't enough change. He stared at me for a moment and one by one slapped 13 pennies on the counter. I was so shocked and upset that I took the incorrect change and left. How do you not have cash for change if you have a cash only lunch special? Please, I beseech you, do not waste your time or money here. It is horrifying.

Their horrible food quality and lack of proper sanitation and food safety practices is a total disrespect to the neighborhood and its residents. They run a business with no regard to the health and well being of its customers, and have no pride in their business or sense of moral responsibility when it comes to protecting the public from food born illnesses. To top it all off, they do it all with rude behavior and an unfriendly demeanor to the few customers they should be thankful they have. Why are you even here? Please leave so a business that contributes positively to the neighborhood can replace you! I urge anyone who thinks of eating here to do their homework and look at their public record on health and safety violations. It drives me crazy when I see tourists eating there with their families, all I can think is "those poor people have no idea" I say tourists because everyone I know from the neighborhood refuses to eat there. Apologies for my rambling, negative review, I walk by this place multiple times a day and ate there when I first moved and I didnt know any better. I got sick which prompted me to look up their health inspection records. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Completely inedible. Upon picking through my vegetable biriyani I found a solid chunk of spice paste, 3 pieces of what can only be described as bark, and 7 whole peppercorns. The vegetables are obviously the bagged frozen kind, complete with wrinkly Lima beans and crinkle cut carrots. I tasted the rice, which was supposed to be mild, and it was so spicy I can't even believe it. Should have listened to other Yelpers, would have saved me $12.

They have a very inexpensive all-you-can-eat lunchtime buffet. Usually, they have one or two chicken curries, a tandoori chicken, and two or three vegetable curries. There is also naan, rice, salad (not-so-good), tamarind sauce and mint sauce. It's perfectly good (though not gourmet or anything), and at the price, is one of Pioneer Square's bargains. One down-side: The owner / manager types are a little controlling and not all that pleasant.

  • Pattrick L.

Went for the lunch buffet. Was OK, but not the best I've had. Earns a third star for its value - just $7.70 for the lunch buffet if you pay cash this week. The naan was decent, and two of the three chicken dishes were good (the chicken curry did not meet expectations). Might return someday when I'm craving Indian lunch buffet. Might even be better next time.

The worst food I have ever had. When you order Tikka Masala and it taste like vinegar you know something is wrong. Then you tell your server and he keeps telling you that you ordered it mild and apparently that was the problem. So I take it that by ordering a spicier version it should mask the fact that the food tasted like S$&T. Should have known the place was bad when we walked in and saw no customers. Let this serve as warning. DON'T EVER EAT THERE.

I have been a big fan of the Indian food I get here for a while now. Personal favorites for me include: Entrees: Paneer Tikka Masala Saag Paneer Dal Makhani Chana Masala Breads: Garlic Naan Paneer Nann Desert: Gulab Jamun and many more. Definitely worth going again and again!

We had dinner here Christmas evening as it was one of the few places open and were pleasantly surprised at how good the food was, the shrimp Briani (sp?) was excellent along with the Naan, which was some of the best we've had any where. The service was attentive, pleasant and helpful. The chef came out and visited. We were the only non Indians which speaks well to me of the authenticity of the food. Will go back again.

I ordered twice from this place. 1st time the delivery guy wanted me to come all the way to the street corner to pick up the food. I found it strange and just gave the benefit of doubt to driver since I couldn't see a parking spot close to my apartment entrance. Grubhub Receipt for Order #453435689 Today I ordered from there again, and when the driver called I requested him to come upstairs to the apt to hand over the food and that I will buzz him in. I had injured my toe and had difficulty walking. The delivery guy flatly refused. And after limping to the front door I noticed he was parked right at our garage entrance and even refused to get down from his car. I was bummed and questioned him why he was acting so strange when all other delivery guys implicitly deliver it to my apt door and he wouldn't even after me particularly requesting him to. He flatly asked me "Do you want the food or not?". I had already paid for it with through credit (with a standard tip) and so took it ( I regret not creating a scene then and there, asking him to pay my money back immediately...but i was just taken aback at the treatment meted out). To top it off he verbally abused me in filthiest possible cuss words in both english and hindi and zoomed off. Receipt for Order #274788898 This is the worst experience I have had from a delivery service and I would urge everyone i know never to eat/order here again! oh and the food wasn't any better either!! if only i could give negative stars !!!!

Just stopped in for drinks (salty lassi and mango juice) after a long hot day. Waiter was very annoyed that we only wanted drinks, and had no interest in serving us - even though there was only one other customer in the whole place. Took a very long time for something so simple. The buffet sounds good, but their indifferent service and poor attitude make us reluctant to try it...

Very underwhelming. Both food and service, unfortunately. We came after a Sounders game as we were starving and everywhere else in the area was packed. Lo and behold Maharaja only had about 5 couples inside the large space. This was promising! (or was it empty for a reason???? - hint, foreshadowing) Anyway, we were seated pretty quickly and got our waters from the server. Not one word was said when pouring our waters. I wasn't too discouraged, until I started to see the other people waiting around patiently for their meals. You started to get the sense that people were getting more and more impatient. I was worried at this point. I brought up my trusty Yelp app, and saw what we got ourselves into. Ugh. After ordering our meals and about a half-hour in, my wife was cold so asked the waiter if he could get her some hot tea. He acknowledged, but never brought it out. Add on another 15 minutes and our lamb tikka masala and vegetable korma arrived with basmati rice and garlic naan. Starting with the good, our vegetable korma was actually very tasty. Portions were a little smaller than we expected but overall it was plenty of food for us. Now, the lamb tikka masala was not impressive. It had the spicy part going, unfortunately didn't have the sweet contrast that I come to expect in a tikka masala. Garlic naan was decent. All in all, we probably won't be coming back. I'm not giving them 1 star due to the fact that they tried really hard. That essentially means they get an "A" for effort.

Why did I do this? Sketchy at best, and the worst was the service. The lady paying in front of me was using a card, and he saw I had a $20 bill, he said "$9.85" and I handed him the $20. He gave me back $10, and I patiently waited for the $0.15. We had a stare off, and finally I said "Where is the rest of the change?", and he said "$10". I said "you said $9.85, and that leaves $10.15 change. Where is the rest?", to which he gave me an evil eye, and pulled out $0.15 as if it was a giant effort, and as I held my hand out dropped it in front of my hand so I had to pick it up. Please keep in mind there was no negative interaction prior to this, in fact no interaction at all, so there was no reason for the douchey behavior. I plan on never returning, and you shouldn't either.

The restaurant has way too few starts for it's actually quality. The mango lassi was very yummy!! The serve was gracious and took care to serve our party of eight quickly. The portions are very reasonable for the price and the food was good!

I'm a regular here for lunch. Great variety of moderately spicy Indian food, arguably the tastiest samosas in the city and from time to time they'll offer gulab jamun for dessert, which is amazing. The decor could be better. Some booths need repairs and tablecloths could be fresher. But it's not that bad. Oh and get here at noon, by 12:30 lunch crowd empties the buffet:)

I have come here several times for Indian food, but only sat down once. You can order from eat24.com , which is super convenient since I live only a couple blocks away. It's always super empty inside which blows my mind because I have been getting food here since about 07 and it's never been bad. The staff is nice to me all the time. Their meal deals are an amazing value. $20 for two people, or two days worth of food for one person. But I have to let you know, the first & only time I have ever had a "surprise" in my food was here. My first bite of my take out meal one time had a staple in it! I don't know how a staple ended up in my rice.... but I'm not the type of person to really hold that against them.

Hi Chariya! Went to this restaurant after an event in Seattle. I've never had Indian food so I thought trying the buffet would be a good way to try some things. I liked the Tikka Chicken Marsala (I think that's what it's called), Samosa, and naan! I am looking forward to trying out some other Indian restaurants!

After two drinks at Bathtub Gin, we returned home to comfy couch and an iPad just waiting to be used to order Indian food. When you order from Maharaja using eat24, you get a free veggie entree when you spend forty bucks so we ended up getting four entrees and tons of naan for about 42 dollars. The food itself was good - not the best of most exciting Indian food I've had, but definitely good and completely worth the money. The more impressive thing is the fact that after we loaded up two huge plates of food, we had only consumed about 1/5 of the total amount. The containers seem small but it is deceiving. We'll be eating yummy leftovers for two or three days which is ok by me! Not the best, but I can't figure out the hate - maybe some major changes have been made in the last six months - either way, I say it's a great spot for delivery, if nothing else.

If it gives you any idea, We ate two plates full of food and a small dish of sweet Kheer. They have a good variety of dishes, all of them were decent and different from each other. My friends said the naan was crispy and the fish curry was spicy. The only downside was the tandoori chicken. My friends said it was so dry and inedible probably from sitting there too long. Overall, it was okay. It was an average buffet with an average price and service.

There is something not good about this place. It tastes like the meat is sour. I had the chicken tikka and it tasted like vinegar. Now, mind you that I gave the Maha in W. Seattle a high rating. I love their chicken tikka, lentil soup and rice. But in the DT restaurant it was all wrong. The guy that took our order wouldn't make me a vodka tonic either. Boo. BOO! 2 Stars because the veg samosas were good.

My husband and I had a pretty crummy experience at Maharaja. We had purchased two groupons for the restaurant, and since my husband works close, we went on two lunch dates. The first was fine. The second, not so much. First of all, it took nearly twenty minutes for them to come for our order, and only after flagging the waiter down twice. Then he told us the voucher wasn't good for lunch, even though we had used it for lunch on our first visit, and there was nothing specifying that the value of the voucher couldn't be applied toward lunch. When we told our waiter that (who I think also happened to be the owner), he gave us so much attitude but begrudgingly agreed. Since I couldn't remember which voucher of the two I had already used, I printed them both out and gave him one, which he tried to enter into the system. He came back to our table irate, telling me that the voucher was already used and threw it back at me, so I explained and gave him the second voucher. He then asked for the first voucher so that he could make a show out of ripping it up in front of me. Needless to say, we will NOT be going back.

This place was pretty quiet when we walked in around 4/5pm. We ordered coconut chicken, lamb curry, chicken tikki masala and garlic naan. Loved all the food esp the coconut chicken. The only downfall with this place is that there was lack of service but I definitely would come back.

Thought I'd try something new for lunch, wish I'd stuck to my usuals... Ordered Buttered Chicken from the lunch menu and a garlic naan. $19 - Yikes! Remember, this is the Lunch Menu... Well, I hoped it would be an expensive but amazing lunch. It wasn't. The Butter Chicken sauce was thin and watery, not rich and creamy like others I've had (perhaps they forgot the butter?) and the chicken seemed watery and slimy... there were pieces of the chicken that I couldn't chew due to fat and gristle. This is one of my biggest pet peeves. Garlic Naan, actually not too bad, however, it apparently cost $5, and was not as big as say, Cedar's, which by the way, is cheaper and the best butter chicken I've ever had. However, that's in the Udist, and I am not. Overall, skip it! Eat somewhere you know is good.

Good for a quick sit down lunch place during lunch hour. The prices are fair and good selection of vegetarian options. I had the falafel while there, you get about 3 balls which are decent sized. Good food, but not the most exciting Indian food I've had. But good if you need a fix during lunch hour.

Ordered a Tikka Masala for an coworker and myself plus some other items to be delivered. They took 45 min which is fine if they were far and when they called to tell me the delivery is here, I had to search for the delivery guy. He sat in his car the whole time it took me to come up and ask who he is, then rolled down his window, had me sign papers and pass the tiny paper bag to me. Food: Lack luster at best. The Masala was essentially orange soup with a few pieces of shapeless chicken floating about. The rice was hard and boring. The naan was small and tasteless (they couldve burned it at least for some flavor). And the portions werent very good. I have much bigger, prettier, and tastier food from Laadla for the exact same price. I wouldnt recommend it when there are such better options out there. I only ordered it because I've never tried it before. Mistake learned. Oh, they also neglected to put any utensils or napkins in the bag which made it a tad bit difficult to eat in an office setting. Hope saving that 50 cents was worth it.

We went there for our Christmas dinner. We ordered "Non-Veg Dinner for Two" option which gives you the following: Naan, Rice, Chicken Curry, Tandoori Chicken, One Vegetarian Entree, Pakora for one, Samosa for one, Raita, Gulab Jamun for one and Rice Pudding for one. We ordered "Malai Kofta" as our Vegetarian Entree. Pros: Great quantity. No crowds Cons: Mediocre service. They forgot the Raita. Had to remind them to get it. They brought the dessert but no spoons (had to remind them to get that). I asked for a couple of boxes to take the remaining food back, they got one. I asked for one more box and then they got it (but did not get a bag to carry the two boxes).

I wish I had look up somewhere to eat on yelp before I ate here. When will I learn that I have a small computer in my pocket at all times! I should listen to my inner geek more often. I'm from Iowa and we have better Indian restaurants then this place. I can't believe I'm about to say this, but this place needs to learn about spices and seasoning. This was as bland as my grandmothers fruit cake. I put salt on indian food for the first time and hopefully the last! Normally when you walk into an Indian restaurant an aroma of delightfulness hits you in the face. Unfortunately, I smelled the Starbucks three doors down more then I could smell the chicken Masala sitting in front of me. If you want good Indian in Seattle there has to be a better place. I'm bound and determined to find it.

NEVER EVER EAT FROM THE SCUMBAG RESTAURANT KNOW AS THE MAHARAJA. THEY SERVE NASTY FOOD, THEIR SERVICE SUCKS AND THEY RIPPED ME OFF! The above is the shortened version of my review for those with A.D.D. The restaurant is no longer called 'The Flavor of India". Rather than go with the more accurate name "The Flavor of Diarrhea" they went with "Maharaja". I decided to take go out on a romantic night out to dinner. We got the Dinner for Two meat eater edition. In retrospect I'd rather shit my pants eating 6 McDoubles than go back to this sorry excuse for a restaurant. Here's why: 1. For an empty restaurant the server had a serious attitude. He couldn't be bothered to take an order and the food took forever to get to the table. 2. Their dinner for two advertises a lot of options. When you order you find out you're limited to a few shitty dishes. 3. How shitty are these dishes? Here's a picture of how sloppy they put their dishes together. yelp.com/biz_photos/We5L… 4. Here's another photo of the meal, the servings are small and it tastes as good as it looks. yelp.com/biz_photos/We5L… 5. The server was an asshole and would disappear from the restaurant! This typically isn't a big deal but when I ran out of soda and water trying to wash the nasty salty aftertaste from their food I was left to ponder to take my empty glass to the restroom for more water or run next door to Taco Del Mar for a soda. So after enduring the shitty service and even shittier food how could things get worse? Instead of serving dessert the waiter unceremoniously threw the bill on the table and walked off. We considered asking for the dessert but that would be like asking to go to a swimming pool in Guantanamo Bay after getting water boarded. Small dishes, shitty service , even shittier food and then they didn't even serve the full meal. I'm trying to stay positive of late so I can say that the the décor was fairly impressive and I didn't get AIDS from eating their meal.

The food was terrible and the service was horrible, the food was definitely a very poor example of the delicious food that is served in India or other Indian restaurants around the world. A message to the owner - to ensure eruption and credibility of Indian cuisine you must do one of two things 1) Shut your restaurant and find a new line of business or 2) Get a professional chef that takes pride in his cooking and importantly knows how to cook and the hire trained staff who understands English the language spoken in America which will help provide courteous service to define Indian food and culter.

I'm a long time resident of pioneer square. I'm a grateful and respectful regular at most businesses in my neighborhood. I'm even a barista in above mentioned pioneer square. To say that most of the week I don't leave my hood would be accurate. Can you tell I loved Sesame Street as a kid? Childhood influences aside, tonight I had the worst delivery experience at maharaja. It's not often you get swore at by the delivery guy. Due to injury I ordered delivery from eat24hr.com . I'm a fan of spending my money in my hood so I picked maharaja. They are literally around the courner from my apartment. The delivery guy walks it over. The food was ok. When I asked for spicy it was mockingly prepared. To say sub par is grading generously. Average attempt at Indian cuisine aside (there mothers would have been ashamed) the real issue was that they forgot the roti. I contact eat24hr.com through the chat feature of the app. (I dig technology and was pampering my temporary shut-in status). They contact the restaurant and I'm quickly contacted by phone. The guy is curt when I explain that I didn't get the roti. He's walks back with a package of what I assume is delicious roti. When I open it all I see is an order of naan. I do round two of chats and phone call, except this time the delivery guy refuses to believe that he screwed up again. When I started listing all the negative online reviews I would be giving him I got "f**k you, man" . I returned the sentiment in a much heartier and much amplified manner. Never even thinking of walking in there again.

My take-out food hit the spot. They don't burst flavor, but they were darn tasty. I had the Chicken Saag which came with rice and the Onion Kulcha Naan thingy. Spacious interior and cool night spot, I think. Off these other reviews, it sounds like spotty quality/YMMV food.

A bit better than last time (just a tiny bit better)- but the food's still ordinary and the service is still slow. So many better options around Seattle- but this one will do for a quick meal before a Sounders game when nothing else comes to mind.

Came for lunch buffet. Food wasn't out of the world, but it was still solid GOOD. They have a lot of vegetarian items on their buffet, so I'm very happy about that. Their Kadi Pakora was especially delicious. I wish they would use Paneer in their Sag instead of potato. Their kheer (rice pudding) tasted fresh and light. More milky than creamy, slightly runny. I like them runny, so it worked out. for $8.99 You'll have a solid lunch, then you'll go back to work.

After waiting in line forever for lunch, the buffet was disgusting, no lamb, and and no pakora. Stick to Madhu, you'll thank me later.

RATS Namely, one BIG-ASS wharf-rat that ran across the middle of the dining room floor in the middle of the lunch buffet. I had been a fan of the place when it was the Taste of India, and the change of ownership didn't really represent a colossal change in apparent quality, so it was a weekly source of a more vegetable-oriented lunch.... ...until my friend the rat did his dash across the parquet...and even then, it's Pioneer Square, after all: the vendors have a constant fight on their hands. I work in the area, and I try not to be all squeamish about some of the things I've seen on the Square and up in the ID, so I was prepared to maybe cut 'em a little slack. No, the downfall came as I sat wondering what to tell the guy at the counter about the rodent...and I looked up and saw a pair of prodigious roaches meandering their way up the wall. So I approach the guy at the counter, explain my two 'sightings,' and he just shrugs. I lit him up a little, and left. Reported it to the Health Dept.: apparently, not the first complaint, as the HD has been counseling the owners on how to plug the holes in the walls and how to set traps. Forewarned is forearmed: your choice.

Bland food...really just lacked flavor or spice. The rice was mushy...like it was minute-rice. Though the Bhartha wasn't so pureed (weird when you spell it like that!) that I couldn't tell that I was eating eggplant. There were actual small pieces of eggplant, which I like in my Bhartha. But, skip it.

Two words. UNDERCOOKED CHICKEN. We're talkin' pink. I cut places in PSquare a lot of slack, but I'd rather not be poisoned, thanks. I normally give every place a second chance (I was going to stop in again to try some of the vegetarian options) but after reading the other guys review about the "big ass rat" running across the dining area, I think I'll skip it.

Came here with the gal pals after our "underwear in the square" run. One of the gal we were with never had Indian food before so we decided to give this place a go. We asked the waiter if we may look at the buffet items first before deciding. He was very nice to show us what they were serving. This place isn't all that bad, but I've experienced better. The naan was great and everything else were just ok. For only $8.00, I guess I really can't complain too much. I don't think I would try this place again.

YUMMY! I have never tried India food and was a bit skeptical. My friend goes here a lot and said I would like it. Well let me tell the service was just as GREAT as the food. We had the Paneer Pakora, Garlic Naan, Lamb Curry, & the Chicken Vindaloo. YOU must try this place it is SUPER DELICIOUS!

I come here for the lunch buffet, and I always end up full and happy. It's great to have an Indian option in Pioneer Square. Much improved over the old Flavor of India that used to be in the same location.

Had a reunion lunch with an old friend today. This was our favorite place when we both worked downtown, so a good place to meet once again -- and even better than I remembered it 6 months ago. Saag Paneer was excellent, and the Chicken Curry was outstanding. Tandoori chicken, always a favorite, had some nice pieces rather than just all drumsticks or backs as I have encountered in other places. And another great thing about this restaurant -- it's CLEAN. The buffet is an economical and great way to taste a number of delicious indian foods, and the services as always was warm and friendly.

I always try to find at least something two star worthy in even the least yelpable establishments. But Flavor of India/Maharaja has succeeded in earning bottom honors from me. My first (and last) experience there was very similar to Dorje T's. I went on a Friday afternoon for the lunch buffet with some coworkers. We arrived around 12:30 and were invited to partake of the buffet, which appeared to be our only option. We actually considered walking out and finding another restaurant because the place was dead in the middle of what should have been a prime lunch rush, but we decided that we were seated and it had already taken us half an hour to settle on what we were going to eat in the first place so we'd stick around. Shortly thereafter, we were all wishing we hadn't. Despite the absence of customers the buffet was inexplicably picked over, almost as if it was left over from the previous day. There was no naan ("Some is coming shortly" we were assured, but it didn't appear until we were paying the bill), there was only a handful of scrawny, dry tandoori chicken bits (more did arrive after we had dished up), and all the hot and cold dishes alike were roughly the same lukewarm temperature. Pretty much everything was bland, and none of us could finish our plates, let alone go back for seconds. As we walked back to the office we were experiencing minor tummy rumblings, and within an hour we were all popping Tums like they were Tic Tacs. It's not uncommon for someone to get a touch of the Delhi Belly after an Indian meal, but an entire party of six? In a city that has numerous excellent Indian options, I would suspect this place is headed for another change in management very shortly.

Today my co-workers and I hit this Indian restaurant for lunch. I've been there once before. It's a decent size resturant located in the Pioneer Square neighborhood of Seattle. The restaurant was clean During lunch time they have a buffet or you can order off the menu. I know what you're thinking, Indian lunch buffet....eeww. But not so. The lunch buffet was actually pretty good. Some of the selections available were tandorri chicken, chicken curry, naan, rice, channa masala, just to name a few. I enjoyed the food because the spices didn't overwhelm, like in some other Indian resturants I've been to. The salad they serve was simple, nothing gourmet about it. My co-workers and I thought this place was fairly decent. The buffet was $7.75, so it was a pretty good deal for what we got. The service there was good and people I spoke with were nice. At some point I'll have to try and order off the menu, and see how that food stacks up.

I actually thought this place was A-OK++. Maybe like 3.5 stars. I'd give the buffet about 2.5-3 stars, but I'm not a buffet person (and didn't personally partake--my two coworkers did, and said it was kind of meh), but the paneer tikka masala I ordered off the menu was more like 4-4.5 stars. It was packed with spices and flavor--very, very, very tasty. The service, yeah, wasn't so great. A bit slow, and the guy didn't speak English very well (I asked how much of the buffet was vegetarian, and he responded that it's the same price regardless of your vegetarian status... So I just got up and looked at it instead. The answer was somewhat less than half--and the less appetizing half, at that). I opted to order off the menu, which was more expensive (more like $10 for an entree--no rice included--and $3-4 for naan instead of maybe $8 for the buffet) but definitely a better food choice. My entree was, as I mentioned, delicious, and the Kashmiri naan was packed with coconut, and very very tasty. The chai tea was pretty good, too. I filled up pretty quickly and took about half of the entree home, plus some naan. I'll probably go back, but I will note that it was a bit expensive for lunch (I wish they had a lunch menu instead of a buffet!), and it was even a bit expensive for dinner given that the entree price didn't include rice, and the decor and service were pretty solidly meh.

Maharaja, as it's now called, wasn't offensive by any means, but it pales in comparison to most other Indian places I've been to in Seattle. PROS: 1. chicken curry was decent 2. service was good CONS: 1. very small portion size - usually I have enough for leftovers at most Indian places, but the portions were barely big enough 2. spiciness - I asked for 3 stars which was supposed to be the spiciest rating, but what I got was barely spicy at all - maybe since I'm a blonde haired caucasian they toned it down but I like stuff hot, damn it! 3. cost - NOT worth it - should have gotten either way more or way better food for what we paid

    (2)
  • Ryan S.

Flavor of India has changed hands and is now Maharaja. It's also improved, but is still not great. I really want to give it 2.5 stars, but it's not quite a 3. The value is decent, buffet for $8 and some of the dishes are decent. It's still not a spicy enough for me, which is typical for Indian in Seattle and the dishes tend to be a little watery, but IMHO I think those who wrote that the place is dirty, etc. are way off base. The restaurant seems clean to me and the food quality is fine. My biggest gripe is what others have said regarding the lack of labeling. I'm vegetarian and choosing which one to get is a bit of a crap shoot. I'd think that the Indian culture would be even more sensitive to this. All in all if you are in Pioneer Square and don't have time, etc to find another Indian restaurant eat here, but definitely don't make it a destination.

I feel bad giving this place such a low score, but the food was awful. At least the buffet food was. Palak Paneer is one of my favorite dishes, and when I bit into it the stems where still crunchy. I had some samosas and those where good (probably because of all the salt), but the dipping sauces needed some love. Everything else just tasted bland and you just felt the texture of the food in your mouth without any flavors.

    (1)
  • Tricia L.

We ordered from Maharaja a few weeks and were impressed with the tenderness of the chicken in our Coconut chicken dish. As we eat Indian about once a week, we thought we we order again today. I ordered the lamb vindaloo (which was good) and the chicken tikka masala. The chicken was tough, and the sauce was bland and seemed to lack the proper amount of herbs/spice. The lamb vindaloo was quite good. We ordered with a spiciness level "Hot." If you really like spicy food, I would recommend adding an extra note to say, "I seriously mean Hot," because it was medium at best. overall, I enjoyed my meal, but wish there was more consistency the tenderness of the chicken.

We went for dinner on a Wednesday night. Their space is too big to be called intimate: we were one of four other groups of 4 there and it seemed like we could still hear our voices echoing. The food is good. Everything tasted very fresh and entirely homemade. We had the daal lamb, garlic naan, aloo gobi, and another veggie dish with chickpeas. Not cheap: about $90 for the four of us (incl. one beer each).

Now called "Maharaja" with yellow banners exclaiming "Under New Management". I had walked by this place scores of times and it just looked suspicious. But my "Curry Cravings" and a recent paycheck goaded me into this place. Had I just taken a stroll along the buffet BEFORE I sat down, I would've walked out. But I didn't. There were a handful of people in there but it was 1:15pm, so I thought I may have missed the lunch crowd. When I got to the buffet, there was a pile of white rice and then 3 almost identical tasting Chicken curry dishes - each sitting in an olympic sized pool of watery, greasy glop. The Tandoori chicken was nasty and tough. And all of it was tasteless and watery. But then I saw a man appear from the kitchen carrying Naan and Samosas! 2 of my favorite things. The Naan was hot, but doughy. The Samosas were COLD on the inside!!! Not warm, COLD as in Refrigerator or freezer cold! The lack of hygiene and food safety was appallingly low here. And I know I'm going to get food poisoning from this one because I can already feel my guts churning and rumbling. Another alarming thing: I heard what was either a crying cat or a child somewhere behind a wall. I don't know if it's even part of the restaurant but it did make for an unnerving lunch. Needless to say, I won't be stepping foot in here again. And neither should you! I've NEVER given out a 1-star rating, but Maharaja doesn't even warrant that. It needs a Health Inspector!

I just had the lunch buffet with a coworker here. Let me prefix this review by saying, "I love Indian food." While Western, I lived in India for 5 years, have traveled extensively throughout India, Pakistan and Nepal, and know and appreciate South Asian cooking. This was indisputably the most wretched Indian food I've had the misfortune of encountering. Let's start with the good, since that won't take long to get out of the way. The one star is because the quality of the chicken in the Tikka Masala was reasonably good, and I have on occasion had inferior, gristly meat at many other Indian restaurants. The bad -- every dish comprising the buffet was watery, Midwestern Scandinavian-bland, and dangerously close to room temperature. This last is a serious risk for a buffet, where food may sit for hours before it is consumed. The salad is never the highlight of an Indian buffet, but this was limp, flavorless iceberg with a few chunks of softening cucumber that had settled to the bottom of the serving dish. I seriously regret not consulting Yelp prior to choosing this place for lunch. I can only hope that the worst is over and that my coworker and I don't suffer from food poisoning due to the improper holding temperature of the food.

25-Apr-2011, lunch delivery service. Naan was soggy, Indian Tea was tasty, but the cups were only half full. I had Lamb Tikka Marsala, which was pretty good, but my coworker had the Butter Chicken and it was full of chicken bones, she could not take a single bite without biting into broken chicken bone pieces. They only gave us one side of rice for both entrees. I think this place is a overpriced and not worth your money. Go to Saffron Grill if you want good Indian Food.

We were walking around late one evening during a weekday to grab dinner in the Pioneer Square area. We got caught by the pleasant aroma from this Indian restaurant. It was empty, and while we initially hesitated we decided to give it a try. The service was fine, and the food was adequate. Nothing spectacular. We ordered the chicken curry and the chicken saag. We had asked for the highest level of heat, but it did not even register as hot. Food worked in a pinch to get us fed.

Needed a place to eat, so stopped here. Pretty quiet but I had good service. The mixed grill was very good,, served with rice. Had the naan bread, which I love. Not bad for the cost.

First, I've been both before and after the name change (from Flavor of India to Maharaja and it seems about the same to me, maybe a bit tastier after the change). Most of my visits being after the change. This is one of my favorite restaurants in Seattle. To be honest, this is probably because it was one of the first Indian restaurants I ate at with any regularity (when I worked in Pioneer Square for a while). It is also probably related to the fact that I live downtown with no car, so I have at least somewhat limited options for interesting places to eat regularly. I really like the vegetable dishes that have the potatoes (I have no idea what it is called), and have had a hard time finding them at other Indian restaurants. Maybe this means those dishes aren't even Indian food, which would explain why most of my friends say it's just an okay restaurant. I've eaten at several other Indian restaurants around downtown, with varying success (Pabla's is good, maybe a tad sweet, but good), and this has become my favorite. I feel embarrassed to even rate this place 5 stars, because most people I've talked to aren't that wild about it. I will say that my parents, who hadn't eaten Indian before, enjoyed the meal a lot here. This, once again, makes me suspicious that this isn't necessarily very authentic Indian food. Maybe more of a hodgepodge of interesting dishes, with some curry here and there. I think the bottom line is, you have to like this style of "Indian" food. If you love other Indian restaurants, this one may be a bit of a crap shoot. If you just want something a little different in Pioneer Square, give it a try.

I only come here for the lunchtime buffet. I enjoy it. Not great cuisine but good home cookin. A friend of mine who is kind of an Indian food foodie won't eat here. I like it as a lunch time alternative to Taco Del Mar and the like.

Wandered around Pioneer Square in search of some food and happened in here for the lunch buffet that doesn't end until 3pm. The buffet was completely unlabeled so you couldn't tell if anything was vegetarian, let alone what it was. The rice was hard and seemed awfully wet. Some of the food tasted like water, I assume it was from the rice. But the naan was good, $8 was a lot for decent naan though. Plenty of room and seemed good for a large group.

I was craving some Indian food, and I happened to be in the area one Saturday, so we chanced upon a visit. There were barely any people there for a nice Saturday out, but that doesn't usually deter me. The food was actually just mediocre for an Indian buffet. The tandoori and the curries seemed to have been drying up for a bit. Could be due to the lack of buffet patrons. I have definitely had better in what few other ones I've been in. It didn't look like anybody was manning the place. The hosts were pretty much in and out. By the time we had to pay, we actually went up to the cashier area, and waited until someone came out to take care of our bill. Two stars for just OK food and barely any service. This won't be the first place I run to the next time I'm in Pioneer Square, but I'll be up for giving them another chance.

This is one of the Worst Indian Restaurant that I have ever been. Everything is Stale and when you tell the helper they don't even care. The Yogurt was days old. Customer service is Worst. I won't even try it for free.

Butter chicken spices weren't quite right and the naan was still doughy in places.

the restaurant has a nice decor, small-medium size buffet for lunch, and ample seating. of course it was a buffet so i didn't leave hungry, but the flavors and spices weren't there. the food was spicy, but wasn't spiced. Know what I mean? I don't know if they tried to makeup for the fact that they used less types of spice by adding more chili flake but it was just OK. I would have expected more to sit in here and spend $8.75 but the togo price (under $6) might have bumped it up. It looks like a family restaurant and his son was hanging out in the booth next to us, so we were entertained by the energetic little guy. I would suggest getting the take-out overall.

Struggling for a number of years now the new location doesn't seem to be working for Flavor of India. They have a lunch time buffet that no matter how hard they work never seems to draw more than a handful of customers. It is fairly limited and not all that exciting. The owners and the staff have their hearts in the right place but apparently not their recipes or marketing. There are much better buffets and dining choices for Indian food in the city particularly on Capitol Hill. However, if you are in Pioneer Square and absolutely have to have Indian food you might as well try it. You won't have to wait for a table (they are all empty) and you will get prompt service. It won't kill you but it also won't be that memorable.

I have been dying for Indian for a few weeks now, and a Coworker and I were to have a lunch date. Another Coworker recommended this place, saying "it's the best I've been to in Seattle". Hmmm.... Well, the food was decent, filling at least. But the experience was a little lacking. I've deffinitely had better at other places, but I've also had worse. It's not so bad if you're just grabbing a quick bite for lunch, but not a place I'd attend a dinner at.

Ordered off the menu at lunch and all our veggie and chicken selections were great. Also deelish naan and a cold and frosty mug to go with the Kingfisher brewskey. Not sure what all the negative fuss is about - go beyond the buffet.

we had our lunch delivered- Our office is only a few blocks away yet it took an hour and a half for them to call me and say they can't find our office in a 5 story building. I ordered paneer pakora ($6.95) which was alright, just a bit cold, mixed pickles ($2.00) and lamb vindaloo($11.95). I didn't know that the curries don't come with rice, every other Indian restaurant I have ever been to rice was always included. I am extremely dissapointed in my lamb dish. First of all there was hardly any lamb in it. It had a lot of sauce (remember i don't have any rice) and a few potatoes. I ordered it 3 star spicy, but i didn't taste any spice at all. With tip I spent $25.00 on lunch and it was horrible. I am never ordering from Maharaja ever again!

  • Hanna D.

my workfriend convinced me to go back, and told me the secret is to order off the menu. I had samosas, lentil soup, raita, and chai--the raita was just plain yogurt, but everything else was good. Went there again today, got the samosas, this time they were obviously reheated--sigh. I ate them anyway. This would never be my first choice, but working in Pioneer Square there aren't millions of choices. The lentil soup was good both times, as was the chai.

We skipped Cafe Poloma to try something different, and ended up at Flavor of India. I'm glad I didn't read the reviews beforehand, because I actually enjoyed my dinner :~) The veggie samosas were very fluffy, the naan tender and dense, and my paneer yummy beyond belief. It probably helped the flavours that I order 5-stars ~ there was nothing to complain about. In fact, I loudly proclaimed at least half a dozen times how much I was enjoying my dinner!

Let me get this out of the way- I've never eaten at the buffet. I wouldn't expect much from food coming out of a gas-warmed table either. If you are in pioneer square during lunch, go to the Mediterranean Mix for the proclaimed "best falafel in Seattle". What i can vouch for is the dinner. I've found that this is the best indian food for the price in Seattle. I always order the Saag and Chicken tikka marsala, and they both have the different layers of flavor that one would expect from an indian place. The server is genuine and a nice dude, too. It is odd being the only table in a completely empty restaurant, so they don't get points for ambiance. Personally, i like to escape the bums, tourist, and frat boys who patronize pioneer square, so i don't mind.

Summary: Save your time and money and do not eat at this place. I decided to go here for lunch despite reading the reviews because it is just a couple blocks away from where I work. Also I saw a sign that said "New Management", so I thought that perhaps they've upgraded the food. I was wrong. I entered the restaurant at about 11:20am and there were zero customers. I grabbed a seat close to the buffet table, then proceeded to check out the food. Visually it appeared to be severall rectangles full of dullish colored soups. Nothing on the table stood out as yummy looking with the exception of the Tandoori Chicken (BBQ). I ended up putting some of their flavored Basmati rice on my plate with some Curry Chicken and Chicken Tikka Masala. I also grabbed a Tandoori Chicken leg. The curry chicken was awful. Though the actual meat was hot and tender, the "sauce" was more like watery under-seasoned broth. The Chicken Tikka Masala was better, but not by much. I would say it is similar to what you would get in an average Indian frozen dinner. Very Mediocre. The food had zero kick to it, and I don't even like spicy food that much, but with Indian food I expect to have a little bit of heat. The only thing on there table that I thought was tasty was the Tandoori Chicken. It had a nice reddish color to it, and a good smoky flavor. Well done on that front. Overall, the food was on the bottom side of mediocre. I wouldn't say terrible because I was able to eat it. Very dissapointing, and I don't think my stomach is taking too well to it either. For your tastebuds and stomach's sake, please avoid this place. Even if the place is literally next door, you'd be better served by satifying that Indian craving elsewhere. Flavor of India would only spoil it. I would recommend Naan-N-Curry in Renton. (absolutely awesome Tikka Masala!)

Buffet. I ate here recently and was not very impressed. It wasn't really bad, it just didn't taste as fresh as it could be to me. Indian food above all others, should express magic and mystery, its personality blossoming forth through fresh spices and ingredients. Not much magic here. Granted, the all-you-can-eat buffet deal for $7.95 is not bad for a buffet price-wise, but next time I visit I'll be ordering off the menu. If you work near by and need to cure your Indian cravings it's a good deal. If you're looking for great Indian cuisine, try Cedars or Taste of India, both in the University District. UPDATE: I've since eaten here for dinner with my wife who is Gujarati (Indian). Same goes for the dinner as for the buffet. Not horrid, but again, nothing special.

It's not a strong buffet. However, it was a buffet. Also, the food was hot (temperature-wise, not spice-wise), which is more than I can say for some other buffets. (*cough* Flowers *cough*)

This wasn't my first choice to eat at- I was actually going to go to Cafe Paloma but I ran into coworkers on the way out and they wanted to give Flavor of India a chance. 2 stars is just is what it is. I can't contribute anything different re: the lunch buffet, but let me tell you about their bathrooms. They share the same bathroom with the Longhorn BBQ Outpost next door and it is *DISGUSTING*. It smells horrible and there are no paper towels. The plus side is that I didn't get sick from eating here.

this review is from the menu, not the buffet. Buffets can be crap, because they are 6 bucks. However, I dropped 20 bucks and can honestly say it sucked. The Chicken feels like it was cooked then reheated. the naan was all burnt and crusty. Saving grace was that the samosas were nice, and the chutney was decent. Overall a waste of 20 bucks, would not recommend to anyone.

Good but not great and not worth going to the dinner. I really wanted Indian food and was headed to the square so... The restaurant was nearly empty and they were out of mango lassi which was annoying and weird considering only 2 other tables were there. The buffet was average fair for an Indian place. Tandoori, saag, samosas. But nothing really great spice wise and it did make your stomach do a few loops. The service was decent but I agree with everyone here, not the best Indian in the city but good if you don't want to travel and are near it.

we all went there for a new joiners lunch. the buffet was $7 for as much as you can eat. normally the quality of these things can be dubious but i found it solid, totally fine and had an enjoyable time. it was fresh, hot and tasty and for $7 you really can't expect much more. it doesn't pretend to be high end - it says what it does on the tin - good value, good food - you come away happy.

Had the lunch buffet, 3 dishes of soupy watery stuff to put on top your plan rice. Nan left over from dinner the night before. Really the worst indian i have ever tasted it was not even really food just broth on rice.

I feel pretty much the same as everyone else. I had the lunch buffet and it was ok and pretty cheap. The samosas and tandoori chicken were pretty tasty, but the curries and other dishes weren't anything special. If you want cheap Indian in Pioneer Square without a wait then I guess this is your place.

Had the Butter Chicken, Garlic Naan, and Chicken Biryani. The Butter Chicken and Garlic Naan were great. The Chicken Biryani was pretty good. Prices were a bit on the high side, but based on location not out of the ordinary. The service was just OK. With 2 tables in the restaurant there wasn't much attention paid to either table. I'm OK with that, but the other table had issues getting the attention of their waiter a couple times. I'd still go back. But maybe delivery or takeout would be a better choice.

I always hate to give a bad review especially the food was good, however, the service was horrible. I had a groupon and took a friend there last night around 6:30pm, it took a super long time to get menus and water, only after we asked. Since the service was starting out bad I asked the birthday boy if he wanted to go somewhere else but he wanted to stay. Once we ordered, there were long delays in service, but the food was good. When the bill was brought to us the owner/server asked if we wanted the last course. I said yes. But it sounded more like a cost savings for them. I the paid the groupon and credit card. The owner charged my card for the full amount and then tried to say it includes tip, but there was still a tip line. After way too much back and forth, someone else came in. Voided the charge and the bill was settled. Felt like I was being cheated. I would have loved to come for the food. But never because of the experience. It was suppose to be a birthday too!!!!! Now I feel like a crappy gift giver!!!

ugh...guys i am so, so tired of shitty customer service. if you own a business, a crucial element is recognizing that said business revolves around your interactions with customers. this is, in fact, the core of your operation. therefore would it not behoove you to crank out at least decent customer service? i ordered delivery from here recently- now let's review the premise of delivery food, shall we? or at least the purported premise. you order a meal. within a reasonable amount of time, the food is delivered to your place of residence. when it arrives, you are notified and you open the door to receive your food. you eat the food, and it hopefully tastes good. happy happy, joy joy, right? not in this case. first, the food showed up two hours after we ordered. a tad excessive, i think. second, by "showed up" i mean we got a call and went downstairs to discover a car chilling with the engine running down the block- the driver rolled down the window and stuck a brown bag out. erm...quoi? so we can't be bothered to get out of our vehicle and actually "deliver" the food, let alone drive to the front of the building? that's some lazy shit, ya'll. lastly, the food sucked. not like "made me regurgitate and gave me stomach cramps" sucked, but "bored me to no end" sucked.
