Upgrading a review I wrote a while back fron 4 stars to 5. The food has never been disappointing and Sheila, the owner, makes dining not only a pleasure but memorable. We love taking family and friends out to this restaurant. Highly recommended!

If only I could give a negative rating. Behavior/ utter lack of respect for the customer/ absence of business sense: To put it simply, we were ripped off. We had checked in at yelp and planned to use a yelp coupon which we showed to the owner before ordering. Having acknowledged that coupon, she asked us to present it at the time of billing. Later, to our bewilderment, she refused to accept that coupon on the account that she couldn't spot the coupon code on the screen, subtly implying that coupon must be a counterfeit. She began to argue at the top of her lungs and cribbed about how yelp only gives them 7$ and keeps a 3$ cut in a 10$ discount coupon. Unable to stoop to her level, we felt demeaned and disrespected. As if it was not disconcerting enough when you withdrew from your statement, you assumed the right to insult us? Also stated that Yelp and the restaurant do not have an understanding yet on how this works. Really? Is that our fault? Didn't think of mentioning it when it was shown to you beforehand? Caution: Do not bother using the yelp coupon as she will refuse to accept it at the end. Food: 1. Lacks any distinct taste, run of mill. 2. Shameful portions. Have been to almost all Indian restaurants in Seattle, nowhere were the quantities this scarce. Extremely low value for money. 3. No point ordering Potato/paneer naan as they will be as good as the plain naan. They seem to think that by skimping on quantities/ fillings they are somehow maximizing profits but they are only losing repeat business.

Have been going here for years! Very friendly and the food is spectacular. You can never go wrong with the classic tikka masala, 4 stars on the spicy scale. Don't forget to get the garlic naan! Atmosphere: it is a small restaurant, but it is not stuffily small, just gives it an intimate cozy feel. It is clean and dimly lit. You walk in and feel cozy. The staff is very welcoming and kind, family owned local business. Food: high quality. The tikka masala sauce is creamy and well flavored. Delicious on a cool evening! I love dipping the garlic naan in the tikka sauce (:if you're really into spicy food a 4 is perfect! Not too spicy but has a bit of kick. 5 stars is max.

Having tried most if not all of Indian restaurants in Seattle, I believe I've found my favorite. Although I've only had the vegetarian items, everything is tasty. The Pakoras are consistently well cooked, light and crunchy. My typical litmus for northern Indian is Paneer Tikka Masala, and their's may be the best I've had - creamy, perfect spicing, you can't stop eating it. The Chana Masala was quite good as well. Mushroom Bhaji was saucy and perfect in texture. Management does a good job getting food out, though sometimes a little slow giving you the bill. The people who own this restaurant have been doing this for many years, are friendly, and care about their customers and the neighborhood.

Love this place!!!! Food and service is always amazing! I love their mango lassi, different side sauces and lamb tikka masala! Doesn't look like a lot, but totally worth checking it out!

Great service but food was okay! It was only $9.99 for the buffet which was a great price! But I guess you get for what you paid for. I felt like the chicken tikka masala was a bit bland. I really liked the chicken they had though, my fave of the buffet food. :3 they also had plain nan and this really sweet dessert ball. It was too sweet but it was kind of addicting. xD

I had the lunch buffet. The butter chicken was very flavorful! And the other (normal) dishes were pretty good.

This place is, hands-down, my favorite Indian restaurant in Seattle. And I'm picky. The paneer tikka masala is unbelievably rich and creamy, their naan is awesome, and the service is always really good.

Really good goat curry, the naan here is my favorite out of all the Indian places on Broadway. I like their butter chicken, but it could be juicier. The vegetarian samosas were great! Really hit the spot after a long week at work. They'll make your mango lassi to go if you want something to sip on while you walk around the hill. :)

I went here for the first time this weekend looking for a go to Indian restaurant and I found it!! The lady who took my order was very nice and sweet. I ordered the Chicken tikka masala and a naan to go and it was delicious! It took about 5 minutes so it wasn't a long wait at all. I was a little worried that on my 30 minute walk home my food would be a little chilly but that was not the case at all. I work in a small restaurant myself so I am very skeptical when I try a new place but I was very pleased with my experience here and I will be back more!

One of the best Indian restaurants on Capitol Hill! As a regular customer for years I've never been let down by the service or the food. The korma and masala are excellent and the naan a decent portion. Two entrees and naan is more than enough of a serving for two people. They will gladly bring up the heat, the menu states 5 stars for spiciness, but they will bring it up to 6 for those that love it hot. Lunch buffet is a great deal for those looking to save and have a hardy meal!

Probably the worst Indian food I've ever had. We ordered online & decided to pick it up so it would be faster. Wrong. I chose the Chicken Tikka Masala since it was my first time dining here. Keep it simple. That dish has tasted the same everywhere I've had it. Not here. The overwhelming cinnamon ruined it. And how can chicken be both dry & chewy at the same time? At least the rice was plentiful. I took three bites & ordered from somewhere else. $13 wasted. Luckily my roommate will eat anything. The extra star is for the friendly service.

Just plain, not good. I love Indian cuisine and I want to love my neighborhood spots, but Indian food this bland, this flavorless is simply unforgivable at any price point. I've ordered from here a few times and thought perhaps the bland taste was due to a disbelief that I DO, indeed want the spiciest. I tried dining in. HUGE MISTAKE. The chicken tikka (waitress was certain to specify tikka vs. tikka masala), was bland at 6 stars (their so-called spiciest). It was also served luke warm and rather than having come from the tandoor, was covered in some kind of ketchup tasting sauce. I just couldn't get beyond a bite for courtesy. AVOID THIS PLACE.

Expensive for the small quantity of meat you get with their dishes. Food is good, just very overpriced.

This place gets 3 stars as it's been the most reliable delivery Indian restaurant on the hill. The quality is nothing to write home about, and it's not particularly cheap (indian food nor delivery ever is). But when I don't want to cook, I don't want thai or pizza, this place is my go-to. The other alternative is mirch masala, and I didn't like any of their sauces--many were overly acidic and didn't seem balanced right. That said, on the scale of Indian restaurants in general, this one falls a bit short of Annapurna. This place does actually get naan right too and has relatively tasty samosas. That said, I've never eaten here, nor know anyone who has.

Ordered a delivery last night after moving in to our new place. The delivery took 70 mins (the website said 45-60). We live 6 minutes away from the restaurant lol but after moving boxes I didn't feel like walking or driving to restaurant. Had to checked in twice and they even called to confirm my phone number after ordering online to let me know that it'll be there in 30 mins. Hahaha nope! Ordered the lamb biriyani, chicken karahi and pakoras. I'm from Toronto so I'm pretty diverse when it comes to Indian food. Verdict: hit and miss. Good food not sure if it's a good Indian food we had yesterday. Definitely no authentic. Lamb Biriyani (Medium): the lamb was tasty Mmmmm and the spice level was just right. The rice used was not very good quality compare to other biriyani I had. The grains were quite small and broken up. But the spices sauce was very well distributed throughout the rice and meat. I did not like the addition of almond in there or the green peppers, carrots and cauliflower. Pretty weird to have those mixed in biriyani. Must say it was a first. Almonds I have had in other biriyani but usually only Afghan or Middle eastern not Indian biriyani. Chicken Karahi: ordered this instead of butter chicken because it not only tasted similar but usually spicer and I love the addition of ginger and mint. It even said so on the description but imagine my surprise when I didn't taste any ginger or mint. But tasted like butter chicken but again with the weird cauliflower and random vegs in there. Almost wonder if they just add it to make it more filling. Argh not needed tho it kind of ruined the dish for me. Pakoras: I have yet to have a bad pakora but these were delicious. Probably one of the best I've had. Even after 70 mins they were still crunchy, thank goodness! Gulab Jamun: can't go wrong. I have to have it after each every meal. Delish deep fried milk dough soak in ginger syrup. What not to love?! Oh one last thing. They add carrots to their yogurt sauce lol. I have only ever had cucumber maybe mint in the yogurt but okay..... Random.

The samosas were ok but both saag dishes we got were terrible. They had the consistency of green slime and were basically tasteless. So disappointing.

Don't let the express in the title fool ya.. This place is delicious!! Personal favorites are the Lamb or Chicken Coconut Curry, Chicken or Lamb Korma, Tikka Masalas are wonderful.. The lamb just melts in your mouth soooo tender, large portions, and THE Cheapest Dinner (Indian Cuisine) prices by FAR In all of Seattle.. They also deliver, very speedy!! All around Awesome Food... Never disappoints!

Man these folks were NOT fucking around with 4 1/2 stars. It hurt so good. My shrimp were a bit over cooked in the shrimp tikka masala, but the naan was lovely, the staff is kind and I'll be back.

I love the food here. Also, they have my favorite Achar ever which tastes amazing mixed into the savory dishes. The baingan bharta at IE is also my favorite version of this dish. To be fair, I've only had Indian food in Seattle and Vancouver. I have no idea what it is like elsewhere.

I'm sorry, why do people enjoy this place so much? I'm sorry but I should have read the reviews before coming to this place. Ehh. So not worth the price of this place. My friend was being so picky about finding somewhere to eat, we just settled for this place. But we should've never. Although they were nice, the food was not that great, and I would NEVER pay this much for this quality of Indian food. Okay, I ordered the lamb tikka masala (11.95) and my friend ordered the chicken tikka masala (10.99 I think). My friend also orders the Indian chai (only comes with 1 refill) and garlic naan. First, my friend said the chai was overpriced because elsewhere, she could get free refills for cheaper, and better quality chai. Second, the naan was not that great. For $2.50 for Naan, it was a good price, but I've always had cheaper and better tasting. The garlic naan just tasted like the powder they placed on it. The naan just okay, but it tasted better than anything else. The lamb masala... stank. Not only were the portions SMALL, the curry was dry and I could count on my hands how many chunks of lamb I got. I was disappointed. The lamb stank, and I'm not sure if it's supposed to smell like that. I've never had lamb that smelled like it. But it was not worth $12 for such little plating. I can find better lamb masala for at least 4 dollars less -_-. The chicken masala was leftover chicken vindaloo because it was red. I've never seen red chicken in the chicken masala... is this normal? Or am I trippin? I'm not sure, but I've never had it with chicken vindaloo. Not that it was bad, but it was different. I don't think it was worth it for the price and quantity. Lastly,, the rice was horrible. It did NOT look fresh, nor did it come with chives or whatever green stuff they normally do. The rice looked very plain, and scrambled... just not fresh, at all. Very disappointing as it did not look fresh. I will never come back ever. Find GREAT Indian/Pakistani food on the Ave or in Renton!

We've lived in the neighborhood for a few months and finally stopped in this unassuming looking little place this week. We had 2 dishes: a Mahi Mahi from the Tandoor that was OK, but not memorable, and a lamb dish that was wonderful. The owner (or owner's wife, as she described herself) served us and was absolutely delightful, and she recommended the particular preparation for the lamb (Bhuna Lamb Ghost.) I normally get Vindaloo, as I like things spicy, but we heeded her recommendation on this occasion and are glad we did. We also had a simple, fresh starter salad and some garlic naan, and they were both excellent. Finally, all washed down with a simple, very well priced, Washington Riesling. The owner explained that they are somewhat known for, and very proud of, their goat curry and we're looking forward to trying that on our next visit.

I used to eat A LOT of Indian food. As in everyday, all day for over 3 years. Morning, noon and night. From the Punjab to Kerala - you name it, I've probably had it. What I've learned about Indian cuisine in the U.S. (UK and Canada) is that while many Indian restaurants feel accountable in taking pride for what they create, I'd say 30% do not. IE is sadly, one of the places that seems stuck in the 'make it and hope no one complains' (or knows better) category. Chicken Korma was bland, and seemed like it was made from yellow curry powder out of a spice jar. The naan was pretty flavorless; everything else was just, blah. The Shrimp Aloo Gobi was the most bearable, but too salty. I know some folks like this place, I'm not among them.

India Express offers phenomenal - and traditional - Indian cuisine on Seattle's Capitol Hill. I visited with my partner and our good friends last weekend and it was a very enjoyable dinner. I ordered lamb curry (spiciness five on a "six scale"). The lamb was tender and generous; the curry was adequately spicy without sacrificing nuance; the Basmati rice was deliciously moist. Our rice was served family-style and our server gave us refills. The naan was exceptional - a bit on the crispy side - and the garlic basil naan was particularly satisfying. You could definitely tell that they were lovingly baked in a charcoal oven. My good friend ordered butter chicken, which was rich, tender, and flavorful. The tomato-based sauce was very, very delicate. My girlfriend was equally satisfied with her dish. My friend and I ordered three Taj Mahal lagers to accompany dinner. My only complaint: all three had expired the "best by" date by at least a year. My 12oz. bottle had expired in 2012 and was noticeably musty. Far from fresh. The staff needs to pay more attention to their beer stock and/or their distributor. Our service was impeccable. Our server paid close attention to my partner's gluten sensitivity; she was a joy to chat with; and she explained each dish in concise detail. Our dinner arrived promptly and our server checked on us frequently, kept our glasses full, and kept the naan coming. Overall, I highly recommend India Express. It is an exemplary, sit-down, traditional Indian experience with great service and wonderful food. I can't wait to go back and try more dishes.

I always forget to review India Express, because I never go there in person. I have never been! But I get delivery from IE at least once a month, if not more. The delivery guys comment on my frequent garden changes, and home remodels, and when there's a different car in my driveway than normal. They're great guys. Luckily, the food here is also tasty. They tape up their chai in a togo cup that somehow stays together through the drive. I've gotten tandoori meats (chicken, salmon), biryanis of various flavors, soup, butter chicken (a favorite of my 8 year old daughter's), the okra dish, and on and on. I love their food! It's even better when it shows up at your door, about 40 minutes after you hit the interwebz and paid via credit card...

Pathetic Indian food. You know it when the order comes out in 2 min. Bad bad bad... Don't waste your time.

  • Daniel B.

I have been there twice, I had tandoori chicken the first time and the second was tikka masala with some naan. The tandoori was good but nothing spectacular, the portion of chicken was very good though. As for the Tikka Masala, the taste was very good but the portioning was terrible. I got 6 little cubes of chicken, just enough for one meal. Usually they are shared, for 12 bucks they better be for 2 people! The naan was very good and rice also were both for 2-3 meals.

I was scolded for not knowing the minimum order for delivery was $25. And I mean SCOLDED! I passed by them earlier today and saw a piece of paper taped to the door and on it written in marker is "We deliver", that's all. Later I called them to order Chicken Tikka Masala (I have had it in that restaurant many times and was always satisfied). When the lady who answered the phone told me I didn't meet the minimum order of $25 (which I think is a really high min) I apologized and said I would come in to pick it up. Not satisfied with this she starts to SCOLD me... She informs me that they run an Indian Restaurant, not a pizza place. Confused, I ask if she is telling me that I cannot pick up the order after all. She starts in on me again and says "of course you can come in and pick up even a $5 order and everyone knows that because we have been here twenty years". I inform her that I have not lived here twenty years but she just can't stop yelling at me so I hang up. If you are going to open up a business in this country I suggest learning the local culture. I didn't intend to mortally offend her by not knowing that there was a minimum order. After I hung up I felt lousy because I felt like I had just been scolded for being poor. I just can't afford a $25 splurge right now. It pains me to give this place only one star because I have always enjoyed eating in the restaurant but now I don't feel comfortable going back in. I feel unwelcome and I am worried that she might recognize my voice or name.

I actually really like this place. The goat curry and the lamb curry never disappoints. It is easily my favorite Indian food in Seattle. I don't know why it isn't busier. I also tried the mango ice cream. It has pistachios in it and I hate them. It's not listed on the menus that it comes with them. The main server is always nice and enjoys a good conversation. The lamb is well done but is still very good and flavorful.

I love Indian food and this place is good, positives: the meat dishes, samossas and rice are delicious, good portions and good price. Negatives, the restroom is kind of nasty, the service slow, the soups are not great. However I like the place and I will go often for sure.

    (3)
  • Karl D.

Absolutely yes. Om nom nom. I _love_ this place. Whenever I'm in Seattle I eat here frequently. It's run by a friendly family who take obvious pride in the food and delight in serving it. They really know how to work with lamb; the korma is a favourite of mine (and, this being the Northwest, the shrimp are fresh and delicious as a korma, as well). The biryani is delightful, whichever variety you get. Tough choice between the onion pakora and the vegetable pakora; both will disappear immediately they arrive at the table. Garlic naan! They make awesome garlic naan. The menu is large and varied with plenty of good options for vegetarians and carnivores, from chili pepper addicts to those whose eyes begin to water if they come within 50 feet of a single grain of hot spice. Most dishes can be ordered with spice-heat level according to personal taste, and if you make it clear you really want it really hot, they _will_ comply.

While visiting Seattle, my hubby and I were seeking out some late night delivery and this was one of the only places open. Although the woman who answered the phone was very friendly, she made it very difficult to place my order. Firstly, their website says that there is a $25 minimum order for free delivery. When I called though, they said it was a $30 minimum. I didn't want to overeat or over order so I asked if I could just simply round up to $30 including the tip (which would've been an awesome tip for the delivery guy) but she said that was not an option. Therefore I had to order way more food than I needed. The chicken korma and tikki masala were okay but not great. Also they ended up missing an order of naan which we couldn't do anything about because they closed right after they delivered to us. Overall, not really a great delivery option.

Oh boy. Where to begin... I wanted so badly to give this spot at least 3 stars. Heck, I would love to give it 5 stars. My boyfriend and I were looking for a pretty healthy, yet filling lunch today. We drove down Broadway and decided that Indian would be yummy. Now I haven't been to more than 10 Indian restaurants in my life, so I'm no pro. BUT - if I know anything about yummy, fresh food, this was NOT it. As we enter we realize we're the only people in the entire restaurant. Just as we consider ducking out, a woman comes to offer us a booth. We sit, she explains the very complicated lunch menu and we order away. The deal was great! Enough food for two for only $8! Maybe this should have been seen as yet another warning sign. Our hungry bellies ache and it causes us only to think about what we're going to eat. I focus on the noises in the restaurant and hear a microwave. I think to myself, "WAIT... WHAT????" In less than 10 minutes our entire order of hot food is ready. And by entire order I mean 4 dishes, to servings of rice, dessert, salad, and drinks. It seems impossible that this food could possibly have been made just for us. We dive in and the first thing I notice is the Basmati rice. It tastes and smells just like a dirty kitchen rag. I am so hungry I tell myself I'm just paranoid but eventually I can't eat anymore. The chicken in the dish appears to be from a can and although lots of the food is tasty, there's no crunch or fresh flavor to anything. It all tastes reheated and mushy. Instead of eating a healthy veggie meal I ate a bazillion pieces of garlic naan bread. My plan backfires. To make matters worse, the woman who served us and took our orders comes back and in a concerned voice she says, "is... everything... ok?" It appeared that she was asking to make sure we weren't getting sick, and not to make sure we were having a great time. Long story short, I can't imaging returning any time soon.

I must admit I am biased reviewing this place because the owners send their daughter to my work for tutoring. However, having never tried Indian food (and I'm sometimes reluctant to try new foods) I went in with skepticism but willing to give it a shot. The owners took amazing care of my friends and I in helping us pick out the best options to eat and drink. Every single dish they brought was AMAZING! I don't know why I didn't try Indian food before. However, I will always go back to this place the next time I'm craving it.

I often cook Indian at home, but when my boyfriend or I are feeling like some comfort food we love to order in from India Express. The food is perfect comfort food in my opinion and the service is great. And yes, the garlic naan is awesome! 1 suggestion to India Express: Please watch your salting, at least for me personally (and my boyfriend, if I'm allowed to speak for him), the saag paneer and some other dishes have come out a little too salty. An easy fix and a personal preference, so I'm still giving them 5 stars! And to some of you whinny yelpers, please review a restaurant based on its taste, service, ambiance, and not on what you think Indian food should or should not be: When you go to a family run business called India Express on Broadway and you are served yummy, comfort Indian food, please do not then get onto yelp and write a 2 star review because the food was not "authentic." First of all, do /you/ know how to cook authentic Indian food? Second of all, do you know that the dish you are ordering even is authentic Indian food? Chicken Tikka Masala is the national dish of Britain. Not only because it is delicious, but because it was created there. Chicken Tikka Masala was created by mixing canned tomato soup and cream and some Indian spices. This is what you can expect to get when you eat at an American Indian restaurant because this is what the dish is, comfort Indian food. If you want something more authentic, order something more authentic. But before you assign 2 stars to a family run restaurant for their "non-authentic recipe" please check your facts. You got exactly what you ordered, and most people reviewing this restaurant and ordering the same thing think it's delicious.

Pros: As their name states they are speedy, the spicy level was perfect, the staff was friendly, and the restaurant interior is comfortable and nice Cons: the prices are too high, the food is just okay, their curry is way too runny

I may be a little biased about India Express, so fair warning. I absolutely love them! The people that work here are so incredibly friendly. When I was in college I ordered from them all the time (usually delivery because it was a bit of a walk but the restaurant is just as good). Every time they would deliver I would have great conversations with the guy about school and other things. (He happened to be in business school the same time as me). I loved the friendly touch. Because of this they would waive minimum cost for delivery fees and things of that nature. Their food was incredible. The naan was always just right and the chicken tikki masala never disappointed. Honestly, I love this place. If I could afford to only ever eat here, I probably would!

  • Z A.

Seriously cannot get enough of this place, putting a hole in my wallet! Food here is straight from the source,...they get it right every time with every dish! My usuals are chicken bhunna, chicken byrani, and chicken tikka masala, obv w/ naan! I usually just order take out but even then staff is very friendly and helpful in recommending new dishes. Wish this place was better known, such a gem!

  • Rachel S.

RE: Maxiom's review If you aren't going to tip the delivery person, you shouldn't order delivery. If you are a student without much money, go pick it up yourself. Don't penalize the business owner for looking out for her staff, who most likely live on tips.

  • Mairead R.

I've got a soft spot for this family run restaurant but their food disappoints almost every time. They've got the chai, the mango lassi, and the appetizers down. But the entrees are hit or miss. The tikki masala sometimes comes perfectly done but other times tastes like ketchup. Lamb vindaloo has been good, though spiciness varies considerably regardless of stars. Same for saag paneer. Really nice people in my experience. And delivery for Cap Hill area is a bonus. But I just don't think they get enough volume to keep quality food coming to the consumer.

Good phone service, easy to order. Helpful with ordering Lamb Tikka Marsala instead of the dry tikka counterpart. 1-6 (6 is extra hot) Delivery (SHOOT i forgot to order rice, and I dunno if it comes with it.) 730p Ordered 8:15p Arrived Yay came with rice! Super bomb, and lunch for tomorrow! :)

India Express is great. The food is always delicious, the staff is always friendly and prompt. We even took our friends, a second generation Indian family here, and they found it very authentic. Sure, architecturally the place looks like a early 1990's restaurant in a strip mall. But if you are willing to put away your snarky, irony seeking

This is one of my favorite Indian food restaurants. The owners and staff are friendly and the food is delicious. My favorites are the Bhuna Lamb Ghost or Chicken Tikka Masala. I also like the garlic basil naan, but for some reason they are reluctant to give me sauce with it. As with many small family restaurants, the "freshness" depends on the time of day you go. Still delicious any time. Also great for take out or delivery.

My girlfriend was told this was a place she had to try so we went and was quite disappointed. I ordered the vindaloo and it was extremely bland and the chicken tasted funny after a couple of chews. The lady that was serving us was very nice though. She came over when she noticed I didn't really like it and took it back to have a new one made after I said the vindaloo I have had in the past elsewhere was much more flavorful. Although her effort was nice, I really didn't want another vindaloo. She came back with a new one made and it tasted so fishy. It was worse than the first batch. My friend ordered the butter chicken which the sauce was decent but again the chicken tasted funny. Their vegetable samosa was pretty good. Normally I only like to leave reviews that praise a place but the price here was pretty high for such low quality of food so if I can help others save $15 on a meal that is not yummy than a low star review I shall leave. Service was very pleasant but unfortunately I shall never return here again.

Free delivery for $20+. I ordered Fish tikka masala (creamy tomato base curry) and vegetable korma (creamy nut base curry). Friendly phone service and quick delivery (about 30 mins - friday evening around 9) It'd be unfair to expect spectacular food from take out; but extremely fishy overdone white fish and twice cooked old veggies? I deserve a little better don't you think? I love fish and this is perhaps the 2nd time i've ordered fish at an indian place. There will not be a 3rd. If you're getting indian, stick with chicken, lamb, and vegetable dishes.

I love this place! It was the first Indian restaurant I hit up when I moved to Seattle, and four years later it still tops my list for good food at a good price and great service. Their lunch specials are a super good deal, and the staff are very attentive. Love love love India Express.

I know how to cook delicious Indian food and I still eat here. Whether I decide to dine in or carry out or have it delivered, they have maintained their quality. As a lover of spicy food, they can make your food hot! I am glad to find a place where my 5 star dish is more spicy than my boyfriends 3 star dish. Most Indian places, we can't even tell the difference. The ambiance of the restaurant is okay, but who cares as long as I have great food in front of me :)

When: 4 times (latest about 2 weeks ago) Food: My wife and I eat Indian maybe once a month or so and are pretty rudimentary in our ordering. I like chicken tikka masala and she likes butter chicken or saag paneer. We have only had delivery ($20 min.) and usually get garlic naan to push the total to $20. This place satisfies our cravings to the point where we don't really need to try anything else (although I am sure we will!) Service: The guy always remembers us on the phone even if it's been a few months between orders which is kind of cool and is personable. Would recommend!

I've dined in a few times and gotten take out numerous times. Food always better than serviceable. They work with dietary restrictions and spice, correctly, to request. The interior is currently being spruced up a bit with some new construction and paint.

It's not the greatest Indian food I've ever had, but more importantly, they deliver on Capitol Hill and that makes them A-OK in my book. I've only eaten in the restaurant once, and the food took so long to come out that I now only use this place for delivery, and even then it takes about 45 minutes. So that whole "Express" thing in their name... not so much! But the people there are friendly, and very efficient on the phone. All the usual suspects are good here: chicken tikka masala, tandoori chicken, saag paneer. It's the perfect thing to order when it's drizzly out and I don't feel like taking the walk to Broadway to find something for dinner.

Admittedly I have not been subjected to a very wide variety of ethnic foods. My family's from the mid-west, Ireland and Denmark, we basically eat casserole and soup. I digress, my roommate insisted this was the best Indian she's ever had, so we made the trek from Shoreline to the hill to meet her best friend for lunch. I was hesitant at first, but my new years resolution for 2009 was to try new things, so try I did. Her bestfriend ordered a little of everything, and I just tried a little of everything. The flavors were amazing and rich, the sauces pureed for a consistent flavor instead of bites with chunks of tomato or onion. Our waiter was friendly and efficient, and overall for what we paid we got a TON of food. It was so good, in fact, that I'm craving India Express right now!

The service is incredibly slow here - it took us about 90 minutes to get three different dinner dishes and appetizers. And by appetizers, I mean samosas that were still frozen in the middle. After we mentioned they were still frozen, our server brought us a new batch. Thoroughly unimpressed, particularly since there are lots of options for indian food on the hill.

This is good standby indian food. It isn't flashy, isn't the best you will ever have - but is really solid and tasty. The service is always friendly and when we have had it delivered it arrives piping hot. Love the Chicken Coconut Curry, but everything I've had is very good.

I love Indian food and eat it everywhere - about 3-4x per week. Chicken Tikka Masala was mediocre at best. Not great flavor. Not great chicken. Service was good.

Do places like this really still exist and prosper? You know, the kind that serve good food and still get away with "Express" in the name? I have passed this place so many times thinking sadly to myself, "Too bad they only serve dishes to go." WHAT was I thinking? (Or rather, "why" wasn't I thinking?) The food is inexpensive, the paneer is abundant in my paneer dishes, and the service is friendly! I was happy and spent next to nothing on my many entrees and naans. My recommendation is that you visit India Express expressly to enjoy your dinner--over the course of three hours. Like I did.

Normally, I would probably give India Express 4 stars but I recently had an absolutely horrid experience with Jewel of India...which got me thinking - of all the Indian restaurants in Seattle, this really is actually the best I have had - thus the 5 star rating. All of their dishes are super flavourful. You can order 3 separate dishes and they actually taste different from one another, as they well should! I have eaten quite a bit of Indian food in Seattle and often it is hard to distinguish one dish from another... India express has some very good, authentic, highly seasoned food. I would only advise one stay away from anything with "vegetable" in the title, as I believe they simply throw in a bag of frozen mixed vegetables for the vegetarians. As India naturally has more vegetarian dishes than meat, there is absolutely no reason to order something with the term "vegetable" in the title - it doesn't matter what you order if you stick with bona fide Indian dishes, you will not be disappointed!!! ***plus they deliver!

I stopped here for dinner after some drinking at a nearby bar. It hit the spot. Their samosas are really good (I have an affinity for filled pastry-like things from just about every ethnic cuisine.) Not fancy, and I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but it is a good cheap place to eat if you're in the area.

I was really, really, really surprised by their buffet. It was amazingly delicious. They have tandoori chicken as well as a wide variety of vegetarian options. The service was okay. I asked the waiter whether we could get some naan bread with our buffet (as I saw all the other people had some) and he got all exasperated and said, "Naan bread comes when naan bread is ready." What a wise proverb.

This restaurant is very basic both in terms of decor and the quality of the food that I had. I ordered Chicken Tikka Massala with a Naan bread. The Naan was fine, but the chicken was tasteless and had a texture that led me to believe that it was chicken scraps that had been formed into solid chunks rather than "real" chicken. I won't visit again.

I really liked this restaurant for the good food and the friendly service. Ordered the Mango Chicken and the Fried Calimari appetizer (which came with a super tasty sweet tangy tamarind sauce dipping sauce and another kind of sauce). All were good and for a decent price of $16. Came back in August for the Chicken curry for $10. Out of this world tasty! I wish they could make the servings larger. This would be my favorite Indian food place on the Hill for now.

I go here all the time...living on Capitol Hill and all... The girl who works the floor is there every day and is incredibly friendly, efficient, and accommodating. The Indian food here is always consistently amazing. Full of flavor, very authentic. The chai is creamy and spicy. Amazing lunch specials...I always get the Saag Paneer, samosas, popodum, masala. Awesome, reliable, reasonably priced, tasty.

Well, first of, normally I would stray away from any place that has "express" in the name, but I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with IE.. Very friendly staff, great services, excellent prices and of course delicious food. Everything we ordered tasted great and was just spicy enough. The staff was very quick to refill the water and were great to everyone in the dining room The bottom line is if you love good Indian food, you MUST check this place out

I was a little worried by the facade, but it's what's inside that counts. And here's what's inside: cheerful service, a great chicken saag, and decent prices. They also deliver (for a charge), and they deliver accurately and on time. I've had most of the menu at this point, and it's all pretty good. It's not the best Indian food in the city, and it might not even be the best on Capitol Hill, but it's fast, friendly and reliable.

I'm indian and I live in Capitol Hill and I can completely vouch for this place being one of my all time fav. indian restaurants in the city. The owners I believe are not really indian but from nepal but neverthless the food is on the mark. The Good: Taste : All their dishes have a ton of flavor in them. I have visited many other indian restaurants in the capitol hill area and on Broadway but they all disappoint me in this category. The dishes at India Express have just the right amount of spices to tingle your taste buds. I also admire their boldness in using spices in their dishes, most indian restaurants shy away from being strong in flavour out of fear of estranging the stereotypical 'American-Intolerant-To-Spiciness', but they don't do that. They have a good scale of 1 to 6 for the level of spiciness to suit everyone and the flavour is present at each scale. I love this place because I dig spicy food and always order level 6 meals. Yes, they are hot but taste great with naan (please stop calling it naan-bread will you). I secretly with they had a level 7 :) Prices: The food is priced adequately but somehow I get a feeling that they give more quantity when taking out compared to when dining in. It could just be my perception though. No Buffet : This is probably my only grip about this place. A lack of lunch-time buffet. I would be visiting this place more often if they had one :)

Holy moly were the prices good. For 8 dollars, I got a platter with the following items: -one piece tandoori chicken (chicken thigh) -spinach saag -chicken curry -a spicy green bean and potato side (my favorite) -rice -a fresh salad (not bag mix) -veggie fritters -kheer Yeah, I was stuffed. The food tastes quite good. I really loved the green bean stuff and the rice. The veggie fritters were the best I have ever had. My only complaint is that they used all dark meat chicken. My boyfriend didn't mind it though. The waitress was quite sweet. We didn't wait long for the food and it was all fresh.

Good food, good (and nice) service, super cheap lunch specials! Dinner is not nearly as cheap, but does not break the bank! The place could use a bit of help with the decor, but that doesn't really matter when the food tastes so good! Enjoy!

Ever since my awkward experience at Mirch Masala, I was looking for a different Indian place that would be a good takeout choice. I think I've found it!! First of all, let me say that the staff here are very nice. Getting takeout from here was pleasant, and if you think about it, how many restaurants can you really say that about? They were great on the phone, and greeted me once I came in the door, and were awesome with small talk while they put the finishing touches on my order. A+ for that. I ordered Chicken Tikka Masala and some veggie samosas. Both were terrific. I made the chicken 4 stars (out of 6? Really? Six feels so arbitrary...), and it was terrific - a nice burn, but it complimented the dish instead of overpowering it. Very tasty.

The lunch buffet is tiny small, unappealing, and carelessly prepared. I've enjoyed several tasty dinners here so I'm not going to pan the place outright, but caveat emptor on the buffet.

When you pass by, you may not know that you just walked by a Seattle Gem! However, you have to try this place! The service is great! What can I say, they know me by name! The Chicken Tiki Masala is delicious! The spicier, the better. However, watch out, the 6 stars is pretty HOT! I have tried multiple Indian restaurants in Seattle, and this place has the best flavor for the cheapest price. If you are hesitant, i would suggest you try their made-to-order lunch specials. Super Cheap! And Super tasty! $6 entree and $1 naan bread. Now who can beat that?

My favorite Indian place on Capitol Hill. Friendly staff, delicious food, reasonable prices. They do a nice job of giving you spicy when you want spicy, and they're quick to refill water glasses. I'd recommend the lamb tikka masala and the vegetable korma, but everything I've had there has been good. The masala tea is worth trying too. Sadly, the lunch buffet is no longer daily (weekends only), but the lunch specials are good. Great food, great people.

Ive tried every Indian restaurant on the hill and most in the U District and still have yet to find one that matches the the taste and service that you will find at India Express. Months ago I would walk by every day on my way to work and then again on my way home not even noticing that the place was there. Then one fabulous afternoon in between shifts i was looking for some dinner someone told me to "try the little Indian place at the end of the block". I had the Chicken Korma, some plain nan and continued to go back at least twice a week. I sadly have not been able to stop in as much as I would like to as of late and miss the food DESPERATELY! If your looking for top-notch taste and happy people India Express is the place to stop!

The last time I had a meal there, I had a vegetable korma that was made from frozen vegetables that were not completely cooked. The takeout dinner was inedible. Affordable, if you want some low quality east indian fare, but I will probably not return. I have lost my taste for this sinkhole ever since.

I've never had bad Indian food before. Ugh. On my last night in Seattle, I asked a local for a recommendation. He picked India Express. No idea why, given the other restaurants on Broadway. But -- I took the local's word for it. I had the sampler appetizer platter and lamb vindaloo. Everything was dry and nothing was balanced. The chicken tikka was dry. The lamb was dry. The samosa and other appetizer was dry. Each item was overpowered by one ingredient or another. I described spicy mint chutney and the attentive, if cold, waitress had no idea what I was talking about. I asked for any spice sauce and she brought me achar then charged me for it. I'll eat anything, and this stuff was inedible. I've never had something so vinegary. The vindaloo was fairly spicy but extremely bland. Extra charge for naan bread? Really? Bad food, average service.

I had the daily lunch special with butter chicken and garlic naan. The naan and the sauce were just fine, but the chicken was gristly. I kept having to spit back out the little bits of gristle, until I gave up on eating the chicken and just ate the naan in the sauce. I agree with the other reviewer about service being slow, but at least it was friendly...

I wouldn't call myself an Indian Food expert, but I thought their food was really great! I ordered a shrimp yellow curry with a naan. When my boyfriend and I were trying to decide where to go eat, we spontaneously walked in to this place. What a terrible name for such a great food.... sorry! "India Express" sounds like an Indian version of Panda express... Is that just me who thinks that!?!?

I've been several times and never experienced anything resembling the horror stories here--maybe I'm just lucky. The food is tasty. They will actually make it spicy. Service was very good. There has been a recent makeover inside, but no ownership change.

Update: I original gave India Express 3 stars instead of 2 because they were the only Indian place that delivered on Broadway. However, now that Mirch Masala delivers, I can't see any reason to ever eat at India Express again. ================= They deliver. I'm tempted to give them 5 stars for that alone. There is better Indian in the neighborhood, and much, much better Indian food other places in Seattle (absolutely nothing beats Taste of India on Roosevelt), but this is the only one that delivers on Capitol Hill. The ambiance is not so great. The food is decent. When hung over and not wanting to leave the house, their food is fantastic. The service is always good, the prices are very reasonable, and the food predictable. Did I mention that they deliver? They always say "about 45 minutes," but I don't think it's ever taken more than 30.

Affordable. Close to my house. Yummy. Super nice staff. They do take out. I mean, really, it does not get any better. I have been going here for a while. I always stuff myself. I love the Shahi Paneer and the Tikka Masala anything. Also the Coconut Chicken is good. Good naan, too. The mirrors in the dining area kind of freak me out, but whatevs.

I ordered butter chicken and chicken tikka masala last night for delivery, along with a spinach soup to cover the $20 minimum. The soup was spicy and hot but had a slightly weird taste to it (probably expected.) I was a little hesitant to order the masala since it's very difficult to eat it from anywhere other than Anna Purna Cafe as the comparison is almost always unfavorable, but I was surprised by the quality. Three stars was indeed spicy, and despite the slightly dry chicken, I enjoyed both dishes. I would order out from them again.

I've got several life's rules. Don't trust anyone who doesn't like cheese. Be wary of people in slippers. Don't patronize any establishment that purposefully misspells their name (kwik kopy? not confidence inspiring) and don't eat anywhere with "express," or anything even vaguely hinting at slop-it-together-you'll-be-expressing-your-ass-to-the-bathroom-later-ness in their name. Curry In A Hurry comes to mind. Yes such a place existed once. Yes, the outcome was everything you imagine it to be. And so, accordingly, I went to India Express. I now know their secret Indian recipe for butter chicken. Chicken, Campbell's cream of tomato soup, cream, cayenne pepper and curry powder. Just like great-grandma used to make.... during the depression when all she had were those ingredients and she cooked it all with a stick inside the Campbell's cream of tomato soup can. Except she used free range chickens and by that I mean pigeons. And it was still better and more authentic. Back then she only charged 5 cents for a bowl of her famous orange squab and side of rice. A bargain for the destitute. $10... not so much.

I think the name is misleading, which doesn't help the restaurant. The "express" in India Express is referring to trains, not to how quick the food is. I know several folks who never bothered to try India Express because of this assumption. And once they tried it, they were always pleasantly surprised. This has been one of my favorite Indian places since I moved to Seattle 10 years ago. They are the only place that has Aloo Mutter Paneer (and a great vegetarian selection in general), the naan is always cooked to perfection and very tasty, and their samosas are great - not too greasy and very flavorful. I believe they are under new ownership as of a few years ago. The food quality remained much the same, as far as I can tell. And the decor got WAY better. It feels much more welcoming and cozy and the service is always efficient and friendly.

I'm not a food expert, but I liked what I had here. There is a large selection, which is good and bad, since there are a lot of great choices, but bad because picking just one thing is difficult. The chicken coconut curry tasted really good, and I liked the Mango Lassi as well. The service was only okay, but I can't really say anything bad about it. If you don't know much about food, the stuff here tastes pretty good.

Moved to Seattle from Brooklyn in January '10. Have been searching for good Indian food since day one. Since day one, I've been underwhelmed at every turn. Maybe I'm trying the wrong places, but I'm running out of choices! Here's another example of sort-of-okay, but kinda bland and thrown together Indian food. It's really too bad because the restaurant is actually pretty charming and the service was great. My chana masala was spicy (as ordered) but otherwise completely BLAND. The onion pakoras were better than most other places I've been so far, i.e. seemed freshly cooked. If there's such a thing as instant basmati rice, this place uses it. Just totally boring food. Not gross, but not satisfying.

Okay, so I admit walking into this place I did not think I was going to be impressed. But I was pleasently surprised as the food was very good. I usually shy away from indian lamb dishes as they are chewey meat, but we had the Bhuna Lamb Ghost and it was one of the best lamb dishes I have ever had! So tender! I highly recommend it! The Naan is great too!

This place is just down the street from my apartment, which is surprising that it took me this long to try it out (I've lived here for a few months now). I'm wary of anything that has the word "express" in it, but figured since I need something fast and not a burger, I'd give it a shot. I ordered a lamb briyani since I was hungry, and the calamari and the paneer pakora (deep fried cheese in batter) just for fun. On a scale of 1-6 of spiciness, I asked for a 6 since I looooove spicy food. The lam biryani was really good, though I might tone the spiciness to a 5 the next time (make no mistake, they weren't kidding around with the 6). I'm a fan of the biryani, though I wish there were more meat pieces in the rice than what they gave me. The calamari and paneer pakora, though, I wasn't a fan off, so I might just stay clear of the appetizers. Second time I went there, I asked for the chicken biryani and a 4 on the spicy level. I liked the 4, but would get a 5 if I go there again. And once more, I'm a bit dissapointed by the lack of meat, but hey, the rice was good :) Would come here again since it's just damn freakin' near.

Their website still says you have to spend $20 to get them to deliver, but I just placed an order for delivery and I had to order an extra starter because they raised it to $25. Good to know before you call! I've only had delivery from this place, so I can't speak for the dining experience there, but the food is decent. It isn't the best Indian food I've ever had, but it isn't the worst either. It is definitely the best Indian delivery I've ever had. It is pretty hard to find paneer tikka masala in the area, but they make a pretty good version. Calling to place an order can sometimes take a while, but the staff is always friendly and competent.

Under new ownership as of a couple years ago. It shows, the quality of the food has diminished. Good for a quick bite or delivery, but if you're out on the town looking for good Indian, I'd try pretty much anywhere else. Revising my rating to one star, sadly... The quality here has serious declined.. I used to love this place, but it seems like the new owners have kind of driven it into the ground. Truly a loss. Chutney's is your only decent alternative, or Arrayapaya or whatever it's called.

After taking a bite in to my Butter Chicken I thought, "Okay, this is not bad, it's pretty good." However after continuing I wasn't as impressed with the chicken. I felt like I got all of the extra chicken parts that were left over. The naan didn't impress me, although I have to say that we did get plenty of naan for one order. It was pretty chewy and I prefer my naan to have some crispness or a slight crunch to it. Mango Lassi was ok. Not fantastic but just ok. I don't imagine that I will return here. Nice place, but Mirch Masala is just down the street.

Add half a star here, as it should read 3 1/2 stars. I recently tried this restaurant (take-out) after reading positive yelp reviews and wasn't disappointed. I ordered Chicken Vindaloo, Vegie Samosas and Garlic Naan. The Chicken Vindaloo, while not the most flavorful ever (lack of spices), was tasty. The Samosas, especially paired with the chutneys, were delicious, and the naan was ok, a little bit too rubbery for me. All in all, I think this place is a good bargain. Might I find 'more bang for my buck?' Maybe-we'll see. India Express is a value, though, with the aforementioned food costing $15.

I love India Express. When Banjara went out of business, my roommate and I searched desperately for a comparable chicken makhni (butter chicken). Yeah, we tried ToI, and weren't that impressed. But if anyone has any /other/ suggestions, we're still open to them because although India Express' butter chicken is awesome and the closest we've found to Banjara's, it's not Banjara's, which is extremely depressing. But anyway. I went to school with the owner's brother, so I may be a little biased, but I really do like this restaurant. In addition to the awesome butter chicken, the garlic naan is ace, and I even love the rice - it's so fragrant. They also give you free refills on soda, even though it comes in cans. What other place does that?! The service is always prompt and friendly. I think they're definitely a good choice for Indian food.

This place saved my ass. I work for an office, and I had to do a quick lunch. I ordered in and, of course, had to bargain as to what time it was going to be ready (I swear, we bargained. It was the weirdest thing. But, they eventually agreed to the time I requested). Delivery is iffy with this place. Fine, I'll do pickup. Anyway, everyone - all 20 of us - was really hungry and I was late for work that day. So, I trundled up the hill to this place, and I got a spot out front. My ginormous order was ready and waiting. The staff was helpful and quintessentially curious: they packaged the food up and labeled it neatly; they carried it out and put it in my car; they rang me up quick so I was in and out. They were very concerned as to whether or not I was having a good day. I was having a decidedly better day. I told them so. I got the food back, and it was a hit. Our Indian "expert" said it beat out Cedars and Taste of India. I agree. Good job, India Express!

This may have been the worst indian food I've ever had. We ordered the veggie korma, palak paneer and a chicken dish.the spinach tasted metalic and right out of a freezer package.the korma was...tasteless and the veggies were actually those little carrots and peas you find in a freezer section of a grocery store. Yuck. I didn't try the chicken. Another low was that the bathroom smelled so strongly of urine that it wafted through the entire place. Two highlights: the naan was very fresh and the waiter was kind- he noticed we didn't eat much of the food, enquired politely, and camped the palak when we said that it wasn't the best. All in all...pretty awful. Stick to annapurna.

I'm no expert when it comes to Indian food. All I know is that their lunch specials are relatively cheap ($8 for an entree and naan) and the food is really delicious. I recommend getting the chicken tiki masala!

Some of the best chicken tikka masala I've had (Please note - I am not an Indian fare conniouseur by ANY means - so when I say best what I mean is - I've eaten at two different restaraunts and this was the best of the two). I don't think I'll find a better naan though, seriously. The service can be slow as stated by Jessica but it's a great people watching place especially if you get a window seat!

When I lived in the CD, India Express was on our speed dial. It was one of the only delivery places (of any persuasion) that would come to our Garfield Neighborhood, so that made it a favorite. But the food is really really good. I admit that I hesitate to review this place because I am not a connoisseur of Indian food. I can't compare it to anything else because for most of my life, I wouldn't touch it. But, after moving to the CD and having to choose between Pizza Time and India Express when I was too lazy to cook or go out (which was a fair amount of time), I came to love it. Try the Tikka Masala, plain naan, and mango chutney. I always order my meals "medium spicy" and its pretty spicy.

I love their food! Their food is not heavy. You don't have "Oh gosh, I'm stuffed" feeling after you finished their dishes. I highly recommend their "momo." Chicken steamed potstickers. YUMYUMYUMx10. I like their Tandoori chicken. It taste like Tandoori but looks like chicken stir fry, kind of. Chicken Masala is also yum. Their Naan is light and just right. Don't forget to have chai, or mango lassi. Nice service. Family oriented hard working family restaurant. I heard they are opening another one. I can't wait for that!

I eat here way too much. India express is close to my house, speedy (especially for take-out) and provide serviceable Indian cuisine. They also don't hassle me for delivering to my place, despite the fact I live 2 blocks away, when I'm too lazy to walk there or have lost the capability of walking due to injury (thanks kickball!). The food here is nothing special, if anything I find it very variable. The naan bread is often nice and moist, sometimes if I'm lucky there's even small pools of grease (nummy!) but at other times, it's burned through and thin. The chicken tikka masala used to be top notch, but recently has turned into a bit of a runny mess, but it's still quite tasty! The people that run this place are always super nice and I like them, I just wish they were more consistent -- although maybe not, that would probably just mean I'd eat here more! Also a few people have said that they'll make you're food really hot for you. I've never been particularly burned by them...despite my trying.

Good for quick, cheap, and delivery. Guy on the phone was super nice. Get the appetizer trio, you won't be disappointed.

Chicken Korma was great. I went for a 5 start but next time I am going to go up to 6 cause 5 was too comfortable of a spicy for me. The naan doesn't hold up as well with take out. But I have had it in the restaurant and it is great. my girlfriend only gets the vege Saag Alu. Pretty decent prices for some good sized portions.

Holy fuck! The pain! Er. I mean... Finally! A place that believes me when I say things like, "Make it as spicy as you can figure out how to. No, really. Hot. Super, duper hot." When I say this, I like to make corresponding hand gestures, sort of a "raise the roof," only at chest height, with an underhand grip. You get the idea. This is an important step; the last banh mi place I went seemed to interpret my request for "extra peppers, lots of them" as "give the whitest guy in town NO PEPPERS AT ALL on his $2 sandwich." It was devastating. But, where was I? Right. Pain. This place makes your food hot. Really, really, hot. I'm not too sure about this star system people are talking about below; all I know is that if you ask for heat with the appropriate sincerity they will work some sort of arcane magic in the kitchen and churn out a dish that will consume your flesh. Possibly in the good way. For reference, I sometimes garnish my food with slices of habanero pepper, and yet India Express can make things right on the knife's edge of too spicy for me to even eat, at all. The side of the edge that leads directly into my pie hole, that is. I feel like I need to place more emphasis on this somehow, but perhaps you're with me by now. Oh, and the naan sucks, and like some other Seattle Indian restaurants, they'll do this annoying thing that I've never seen anywhere else and bring it out fully 15 minutes before the rest of your food. But, really, whatever. A chicken tikka masala that can melt glass is worth an easy four stars in my book.

{review of take-out/delivery only} We order India Express regularly. Since the birth of our first child, we have come to appreciate the restaurants that deliver in Capitol Hill. We are indeed creatures of habit. We almost always make the same order: - Chicken Tikka Masala - mmm... perfect combination of creamy and spicy - Chicken Jalfreze - onions, hot peppers and chicken. TANGY. - Saag Paneer - they don't skimp on the Paneer - Aloo Gobi - CardaYUMmy - Naan - can't go wrong For delivery Indian, I give them FIVE STARS. The food is IMHO very good. We bring up ordering India Express like a secret sin - "Oooooh, should we get India Express tonight?"... :) They are also very, very polite on the phone and also at the door. Minus one star because they can be quite slow and they are a bit pricey.

There are two reasons I come back to this place, hence the two stars: 1. The convenience of being 2 blocks away from my house 2. Friendly staff That being said, when I order something HOT, don't sugar coat it for me and expect me not to surprised and say "That's not hot" I then have to order Extra Hot just to get some kind of heat. There is a delicate balance of something being spicy and edible. The food isn't bad, but I honestly know why it's called Express. If I want quick, easy Indian food, I'll go here.

I should have known that with a name like India EXPRESS, I should not have ordered from them. Delivery was fast, but the Tandoori chicken had no Tandoori taste at all. I was very disappointed because I really had a major craving for Tandoori Chicken and all I got was old chicken dyed red. The naan bread was also terrible. We also ordered Lamb Korma that was the only thing that kept me from really saying some bad things in this review. I will not be ordering from here again.

Ah, the luxurious decadence of ordering in. Why go outside, where it's cold and possibly snowy, when you can simply pay lackeys to bring food to you? Getting dressed is highly overrated, anyway. Your choices are limited only by whichever takeout menus you can scrounge from around your apartment, and so it was that we recently tried this Indian restaurant's takeout. With a minimum order of $20, delivery is free, so there's really no incentive to actually go there. Entrees range from $9-12, with most around $10, so order a couple of main dishes and some naan and you're all set. And on a Saturday evening, our food only took twenty minutes to arrive (much shorter than the 45 minutes they estimated), and they even got everything right. High-five! Naan is, of course, the whole reason for eating Indian food, and we tried the plain and garlic, both of which were fine, if a little thicker and doughier than ideal. The garlic naan could have used more garlic --- the flavor was subtle enough that I wasn't initially sure which kind was which, but then, I like to see actual chunks of garlic sticking out of the bread. The mango lassi was good, though very sweet and a little on the thick, milkshakey side. The veggie samosas were yummy (if a bit mushy in texture inside), especially the crazy seasoned salt they rolled them in, although the dipping sauces that accompanied them (a yogurt sauce and a green cilantro-y sauce) were unremarkable. My chicken tikka masala was tasty, and the lamb saag was even better. They offer a spice-o-meter that goes from 1 to 6, and we requested a 3-4 on both dishes, which came out spicy but not eye-wateringly hot. The rice was fluffy and well-made, too. Actually, I lied --- there is one reason to go into the actual restaurant, and that is the lunchtime buffet, which is usually an amazing bargain. I believe this place's lunch buffet is $6.50, and though I haven't tried it myself, the cheap price and promise of all-you-can-eat might be enough to lure me out of the house someday. Until then, I'm keeping the takeout menu by the phone, just to be on the safe side.

not sure how i have missed putting in my 5 stars for india express until now. there is nothing quite like their dal, their okra masala, and my favorite standby, the alu matar paneer. i like them spicy, and they do a good job of balancing the spice with the flavor so it does not overpower the dish. i always try to go during lunch so i can get the veggie thali, a tray of about 6 different vegetarian options. i like to have a little of everything. my man is addicted to the shrimp korma. the waiter, shashaun (sp?) is amazingly friendly and even went so far to give us some dried chilis for the road because i like them so darn much. the other reviewer is right on in that the facade is a bit, uh, without curb appeal. and if it's really cold out, plan on leaving your coat on. but that doesn't detract any stars for me...the food and service are what i came for.

Everything has always been great here, the mango lassies, the naan, the entrees, as well as the service, etc. Occasionally it takes awhile but when it comes it satisfies in ways you had forgot since the last time you ate Indian food.

India Express is a mixed bag. It has some occasional missteps including their tandoori shrimp. But where it shines, it shines bright. The mango chicken is phenomenal, as is the saag paneer. They have always been willing and able to make substitutions and the service is very friendly.

I've never eaten AT India Express. If I'm going to get dressed and leave the house to get something to eat, especially if it's going to be Indian food, there are a million places better than India Express. Their delivery, though, is hard to beat. When I am too lazy to leave the house but can't bear the thought of ordering pizza, India Express is my go-to restaurant. They're usually fast, I've never had them mess up an order, and their prices are decent. As far as quality goes... Meh. They're ai'ight. They've gotten better since they changed owners. The tikka masala is usually good. The vindaloo not so much. The garlic naan is good, but not great-- sometimes too chewy. And the make-up of the rice isn't very consistant. I'd order from them for delivery any day, but if you're looking to go out to eat, go somewhere else. There's much better food to be had.

Things I don't enjoy finding in my saag aloo: (1) broken glass, (2) russet potatoes with the skin still on. Unfortunately, I found both last night.

Inida Express is a solid everyday neighborhood restaurant. Food is solid and the place is clean. I love all the Everest\Climbing photos and autographs. The Okara Masala was great. Hot is HOT. :-) The family who runs this place are very nice and they keep the place very clean including the restrooms.

Their service can be a bit slow. They messed up my food twice in a row- giving me burn-a-hole-in-my-tongue spicy food when I ordered 2 stars. I couldn't finish the food and had a stomach ache all night. But they did a good job on my husband's food. So I guess it's a bit of hit or miss.

I'll break up my review into two parts: delivery and dine-in. Delivery: Best Indian food for delivery in the Capitol Hill area. The food is really good, the guy who answers the phone is also super nice, and my orders are always delivered very quickly. Give the butter chicken and saag paneer a shot, make them extra spicy. The buna lamb gohst is also awesome, but if you get that extra spicy be prepared for the worst. Garlic Basil naan and vegetable samosas finish it off. Don't bother with the pakoras, as when you get them they'll have been sitting in a styrofoam container for a while and they'll be soggy. Dine in: For a place that has awesome delivery, their dine in experience really isn't that great. They have a buffet for lunch, as most indian restaurants seem to have. The selection is OK, but not great. Seems to be an afterthought vs the main reason the restaurant is there. The meats they use during the buffet are also of lower quality, so watch out for bones, and especially bone CHIPS. I don't mind bones in my food, but when they're small bone fragments that came from chicken... well, you get when you're not supposed to feed animals pieces of chicken like that. Their menu selection is also good (same as the delivery), but yet for some reason the food seems "better" (as in higher quality), but yet "not better" (as in taste). So, keep this place on your short list for Indian delivery, but don't bother going in.

The veggie somosas we ordered for starters were brought out quickly and hit the spot. The two entrees from the vegetarian section were tasty, but my girlfriend kept having to pull hard bits of ??? out of her mouth from the rice. There was also a fly floating around in her water glass. The garlic naan we ordered was also reheated - it was floppy and chewy - quite disappointing. The staff were very nice and attentive - but I don't think we'll be going back soon.

i really enjoyed this restaurant! i was loyal to chutney's, but the recent times i've been there during my trips to seattle it hasn't been the same... some friends recommended this place... their tikka masala sauce was made just right.. the right blend of creamy, spicy, and tomato saucy. i really loved their saag aloo. the naan was crispy on the outside, and tender and warm in the inside. great selection of eastern asian beers. they were so kind to fulfill our endless requests, fill our glasses of water, and even gave complimentary dessert to our party of 6 to celebrate the b-day girl's day!

I've been wanting to try India Express for a while--I go by it on the bus, or am walking around on the hill and remember hearing about it from friends, and I finally got a chance to go! I actually went to get takeout, so I didn't have a full-on dining experience this time around. The food was pretty good. We had chicken tikka masala and a lamb curry, with garlic basil naan. The guy working there was very friendly and nice, offering us a table to sit at and some ice water to drink as we waited for our food to be prepared. The chicken tikka masala was probably my favorite. The chicken was very tender and the sauce was awesome. The lamb curry was good too, but I don't know that I would go out of my way to order it again (I just wish I remember what it was called!). The naan was the least impressive part of the meal, but I wonder if getting it to go had something to do with that? It wasn't bad, just seemed a little thinner than other naan I've had in the past, and I take my carb intake very seriously. The rice was aromatic and delicious, cooked with cardamom in it! Yum. I'd go there again--I'd like to try their lunch buffet.

India Express is the nicest restaurant in Seattle. I've been going there regularly for about a year, and the people who work there know me. They come over to talk to me about movies, news, and whatever else. It's not just good service, the food is excellent. They have great vegetarian options, and the naan is good. It's pretty fast, it's fairly priced. Go there.

I don't know how some reviews knock this place. It was easily some of the best Indian I have ever had. The garlic naan was definitely the best. i came here for dinner and had the mixed appetizers (fabulous fried veggie things) and the Chicken Karahi- 2 stars. Perfect! The food came quickly and it was fresh. Fantastic!

There's nothing better for curing a hangover than their chicken korma. AND, it's free delivery (watch out tho, they have a minimum of like $20). It's not as express, as say, the domino's 30 min deal, but especially if you eat in the restaurant it's pretty speedy. The food isn't mind-blowing, but at least very very tasty. Oh, and don't worry, if you order a little higher on the spice scale (1-6) they constantly fill you up with more water. Def recommended.

this was easily the worst Indian food i've had in my entire life...and i'm not comparing this to great Indian food i've had in India, or the UK, or Vancouver for that matter. the tandoori chicken was rubbery. the paneer was chewy. the butter chicken tasted worse than some of the stuff i've had from packages at my local grocer. i'm not sure what my fellow yelpers ate when they gave this place 4-5 stars, but this food was so bad that it prompted me to post my first negative yelp comment since moving to seattle.

this place is awesome for lunch, with their lunch specials, a meal that's normally about $10 was $6, and the garlic naan was only $1! i got the chicken saag and it was amazing, so tender, so moist, so flavorful. it was also a really big portion too, it had the chicken, rice and a small salad, so it filled me up quite nicely. our server was also very mindful of filling up our waters, love it

This is the best place to call when you are depressed, alone, feeling agoraphobic, want to die, don't want to put on clothes to go to store to buy food to put in your mouth but havent eaten in three days etc. The Chicken Tikka Masala ordered very very spicy is good. So is the Malay Kafta, make sure its very very spicy. Unspicy is kind of gross. Their delivery is pretty good, but the last time I called, the dude got mad at me because I lived so close to their location. Ok, so three blocks. I told them that I'd tip well, but then I got nervous that they'd do something to my food, so I put real clothes on and ended up walking to pick up my order. Next time, act like you don't know where their store is when they mention that your address is awfully close to theirs. Or I guess, go and pick it up, but then, whats the point?

I needed a quick Indian fix and they delivered. I thought it was the greatest find in my new neighborhood. I had pakoras, butter chicken and something else... probably masala, naan, and of course, rice. I couldn't eat more than a few bites because their rice smelled like dirty wet rag- I'm not talking about a fresh dirty wet rag, but one that marinated for a while. I am almost annoyingly particular about rice, so I ended up making my own batch of fresh cooked basmti rice which smelled absolutely wonderful. Although their curry was ok, I don't think I'll go back there.

This casual Indian place gets good marks from me. I've been a few times for their lunch buffet & have ordered dinner delivery as well. While the buffet is small (the place is small), it still has good variety. Service isn't particularly friendly, but it's speedy & the restaurant is comfy in a small, casual, neighborhood kind of way. Delivery is always fast (under 30 minutes), friendly & food hot & fresh. Ordering Indian food for dinner is always a treat for me because my husband doesn't love it, so when he's out of town I tend to go a little crazy. Delivery is free in Cap Hill w/ a minimum $20 order, which is easy to do (even for 1 person) - of course w/ lots of leftovers!

I was really hoping this place would be at least acceptable - I love Indian food, and this is the closest place to my apartment. I had a serious craving for Indian food last night, and hadn't tried this place yet, so thought I'd give it a shot. Went in, ordered carry-out, guy was nice, food was ready quick. Got home, the rice & roti both looked (and tasted good), poured some lamb out on top of the rice - not too much, I'd ordered it extra spicy, first time here, never quite know what extra spicy means for different places. Ok, so apparently extra spicy here means completely totally and utterly lacking any spice at all. I almost took it back, but it was raining and I'm lazy and hungry. Instead, I went to the cupboard and dumped a ton of red pepper into my curry. I like spicy, and am disappointed when Indian food isn't hot (it's just not right!) - but I've had more spice in from the stand at the mall. The only reason it gets 2 stars is for the quick service, and the rice 7 bread. If I had to rate it on the curry alone, one star is about 3 too many.

This place was good. No I didn't think it was great, but I gave it 4 stars instead of 3 because its really cheap for the amount of food you get. I dined there alone one early evening, ordered an appetizer (vegetable pakora I think) and an entree (Chicken Korma - my fav). I took half of the entree home and had it the next day for lunch. The food came out quick and like I said it was good. I'm interested in trying some other Indian places in the area to see how they compare. I also hear they have a fabulous lunch buffet. Note: If your afraid to try Indian food, the buffet is always a good choice because you get to sample a few different dishes.
