A southern girl living in the northwest still gotta have some good ol' fried chicken and mashed potatoes between all this Northwest hiking, quinoa, healthy eating, glass-bottle lifestyle. KFC just ain't like it was when I was a kid. Ezell's is alright...but the touch isn't quite there. Heaven sent does the fried chicken RIGHT! Gotta get the spicy batter. Original is really really plain....like really.... Spicy: Crispy dark batter, with the right amount of black pepper and flavor. The legs and thighs are really juicy. Mmm Mmm Mmm! The mashed potatoes are pretty good, but waaaaay too much gravy (more like gravy with mashed potatoes). I wish there were biscuits....I ought to try their corn bread, because you can't have southern food without cornbread and butter! Definitely going back.

Wow I can't believe it . I walked in and there he was the Man himself Ezell helping out and mingling with everyone . What a guy the food was great and cooked just right . I tell every one I know go to Heaven Sent from now on not that other place . This is THE REAL DEAL Ezells brand here .

YUM! Fried chicken, you are my best friend. I'm not going to get into the Ezell's/Heaven Sent debate; they're both good and this particular Heaven Sent location is just closer to where I live. I'm no chicken snob, I'll take the clucker however it comes. The fried chicken is crispy and juicy and I love it with the soft golden bread it comes with. They have plenty of sides but my focus is the chicken. They also have fried chicken liver, which I am not a fan of at all, but some other people do, so props to Heaven Sent for catering to different tastes.

Best fried chicken ever, and make sure to try their corn bread!

Best chicken in the city. They're back to being just right when it comes to the spice level. I still feel their sides need work, but I could just be picky.

When you walk in, you better know what you want to order. The person taking your order is expecting you to order without too much pausing and considering, especially if a line is growing behind you. Luckily, I had done my research. I ordered the family meal (half spicy) and tried mashed potatoes, potato salad, spicy fried okra and collard greens. Here's the rundown on my family's reactions to the food. The rolls were yeasty and soft - they were a win. The spicy chicken was not as juicy or tasty as the regular chicken (surprisingly), so next time, we wouldn't bother ordering the spicy. The collard greens were sour and tough. The mashed potatoes were hard and flavorless (goes for the gravy, too). The potato salad was pretty good, but you better like relish in there, because there is a lot to be found. The fried okra was a win at our table. We also ordered some chicken tenders for the kids, and they ask you which sauce you'd like. It's phrased in such a way that I thought the sauce was included. I was disappointed to see a charge for sauce, especially given it is pre-packaged and not homemade. Not sure we'll be back... we felt even a trip to Popeyes in Renton would be a better fried chicken meal.

Fried chicken aficionados in Seattle are probably already familiar with Ezell Stephens and the eponymous restaurant that rocked fried chicken. Legal issues were ultimately settled out of court. Ezell lost his naming rights but kept his recipes. Try both and I think you'll agree with me that Heaven Sent wins. And Heaven Sent, you make this Texan happy! You have properly spicy fried chicken and okra, actual mashed potatoes with real gravy, and collard greens. If you don't want spicy chicken, there's an original version and if you prefer chicken strips, they have those too. Other sides include cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans, loose corn, and French fries. They also have specialty sides which will cost you more - macaroni and cheese, collard greens, fried okra, plus fried gizzards or livers, and chicken salad. Don't forget those rolls (mmm!) and recently noticed that they sell cornbread muffins too. If you crave something sweet, they have a bevy of country treats like peach cobbler, bread pudding, sweet potato and apple pie slices, plus 7-Up cake. You can get your Faygo on if you want to truly sate that sweet tooth. Some people complain that they check I.D. with credit cards. It doesn't bother me that they do. During busy times, it can get congested inside with folks waiting for their takeaway orders. I like the fact that they poke holes in the tops of their containers so the chicken doesn't get soggy on the way home. Downside is that your car will smell of fried chicken for a couple days. Parking here is limited to four spaces. I've parked next door at SBUX if I'm grabbing stuff to go. The dining area is also limited to two tables (four chairs total) or four counter seats that face out onto Lake City Way. I've seen people take their food outside to the SBUX patio seating and eat there. They also seem to buy a coffee drink also so they are patronizing both establishments though.

Was curious if there was a difference. Heard the chicken was amazing so I went there to eat some. Very good. Then was told there was a mini feud between partnership. Thats why chciken tasted as good as ezell's. No difference just different name of establishment.

  • Jason R.

I have to say that I was not impressed by the chicken here, which is dissapointing after reading all these good reviews. I enjoyed the crispiness, but the chicken was dry. I would like to belive that I just got some chicken that was under the warmer too long, hopefully this is not what it tastes like fresh. Either way, not impressed and not sure if I'll return. The potato sald had excellent flavor, although I do prefer the taters to be big chuncks instead of diced up, but that was not a deal breaker.

  • Shelley S.

Good meat. Good fried coating. Sides were okay. Roll not very fresh. Slaw was good enough. The chickens the star. Get just chicken and add your own sides from home, might be better. But definitely good meal if you don't have time for that.

This is the first place I went after I moved back to Seattle last year, no joke. After having lived in the South for four years, I wasn't able to find fried chicken that can hold a candle to this place. Even Gus's in Memphis wasn't as good. Talking about the spicy, not the regular. If you go, get the spicy!!! This is better than Ezell's, though it's the same recipe, Ezell's has fallen off a bit.

    (5)
  • Nneka I.

Yumm. Similar but better than Ezells. The spicy strips are actually spicy. They have more of a variety of sides as well. The large came with a lot of strips. Will come back next time I have a craving.

Damn good chicken! As you know, this is the location that Ezell Stephens opened after he lost the rights to the Ezell's chain. It's his recipe, and of course it's on par with the Ezell's locations. Pretty much - if you love Ezell's chicken, you'll love Heaven Sent chicken. The sides are just as good too. If I'm in the area, I'll stop by. It's some of the best fried chicken you'll ever have. Not only do I think that, Miss Oprah Winfrey herself does too!

It is a tragedy that I live way too close to this place. Seriously. Fried Chicken is something I used to eat often as a kid, so at times it's part of my comfort food group. Thankfully I don't eat it as often any more, but damn, Heaven Sent hits the spot when the mood strikes. I usually opt for the large 2-Piece combo (comes with 2 sides and a roll), with cole slaw and baked beans as my sides. Every single part of that meal is delicious and amazing--and yes, that includes the roll. Obviously the chicken (I get it spicy, duh) is the star of the show, but they do not half-ass their sides at Heaven Sent here! The sides are equally as delicious and are why I will always order a large combo. I've also stolen a few bites of the BF's mac & cheese which was also divine.

  • Majd J.

I went to this place expecting good quality food, but I got very cheap version of fried chicken! I ordered spicy chicken but it was not spicy, I didn't like their bread! Also the floor was very dirty

    (2)
  • C. R.

Extreeemmeeelllyyyy expensive "to go" chicken joint. Wow! The combo meal option(s) make absolutely no sense, lol, and really isnt a value anyway. Yes the fried okra is good, but is it THAT good?! U wait FOREVER for your food, even though the racks of chicken under heat lamps is always full, chicken ready to go. Staff seem confused and uninterested. I can think of better food/experience for 40 dollars for 2 people.

  • John T.

So sad, I really wanted to have an Ezell's in the north end. I had been coming here for years but stopped when the quality went downhill. Tried it again today and it was worse! Dry chicken that somehow was ready right when I ordered it. The staff was also quite rude as other posts have stated. The lady that works the counter and has for years is incredibly rude. She really seems upset to have any customers, and regularly forgets things in to-go orders. You'll see people looking through their bags as they leave with her staring them down ready for a conflict. Today, A guy thought she forgot his okra and she really let him have it. If you're in the mood for some dry old chicken, and bunch of attitude, then this is your place.

Jeez. Fried chicken... you are my best friend and my worst enemy. Yum. I hate to love greasy food. Oh who am I kidding I LOVE FRIED CHICKEN and Heaven sent is finger lickin good (no trademark) haha. Lets get down to the details! _______________________________ Chicken: YUM YUM YUM. Get the Cajun style no questions asked. The cajun is so good. I mean the original is good dont get me wrong but the cajun kicks things up a notch. Crispy, a little oily, and moist. It doesn't get much better. Note: To anyone that is weary of spicy: Its not spicy, but it is delicious. =P Soda Bread: Whoa. This bread is soft, a little crispy, and sweet. I realy like this bread too and its the perfect compliment to the oily chicken. yum yum yum. NOW the big question right?! What to get with your 5 piece meal. Okra: I love the okra, but its oily yo. Really oily. You might want to give it a pat down with a napkin before you dunk it in honey mustard. Mashed potatoes: Pretty standard but mashed potatoes with fried chicken with clutch. Cole slaw: I know everyone has their choice of sides... but come on. If you're already ordering fried chicken (AND OKRA) you might as well go all out! ________________________________ Anyway. To wrap things up: Cajun chicken, soda bread and a side of okra +/- mashed potatoes. Happy eating friends =]

I ordered a chicken breast, these are usually triangular. What I got was a strip about and inch and a half wide and 4 inches long. They had cut a breast in half along the ribs, and sold me half of it. This, to me is deceptive. I won't be back.

    (1)
  • Jeff L.

Good stuff! Healthy portions. Good prices. Really dig the sides. Love the beans, collard greens, potatoes, potato salad.

    (4)
  • Ryan K.

This place has very good fried chicken but I think it's not quite as good as the stuff I've gotten from Ezels. Don't take this the wrong way the chicken here is still very good and better than pretty much every other place in the area but just isn't quite the same as the original place even though they are semi-related. Needless to say I'll be back.

    (3)
  • Sebastian J.

I came here with my friend Chelsea J., who says this is her favorite restaurant in the whole wide world. I had a leg and thigh, spicy -- flavorful and right amount of crunch! Chelsea had the leg and thigh, breast and wing, the mac and cheese, mashed potatoes with gravy, and the cole slaw, and the potato wedges, and a few other things I don't remember. She said she loved all of it. So this place has to be good!

    (5)
  • Simon B.

Yes best fried chicken in town, hands down. Better than ezelles, way better. I have never liked fried chicken breast, I always thought of it as a healthier option, leading it being dry and not tasty. WRONG! when it comes to heaven sent their spicy breast is THE BEST! They also have amazing spicy chicken strips meal, comes with a side and drink

    (5)
  • Carmen J.

Very good spicy fried chicken! It is that original Ezells chicken that I had loved from before but has not been nearly as good anymore. Now I know where to go!

    (4)
  • John E.

For those who think there is a debate between Ezell's and Heaven Sent, there isn't. Ezell Stephens used to own Ezells. There were problems so he went his own way to keep bringing the chicken people have come to know and love to the Pacific Northwest. That's when he started opening up the Heaven Sent chain. Its the same recipes. You want the real thing? Go to Heaven Sent!

We has just moved into this neighborhood, and needed a place to get decent take-out, preferably with quantities of meat. Yelp talked us into this place on a Sunday evening, and we were glad of it. $25 got us eight pieces of excellently fried chicken (not greasy, and with a nice crisp coat), four really good rolls, and two large sides: some coleslaw my husband raved about (after a roll and a big piece of chicken eaten too quickly, I had no room for anything else), and some baked beans we're still waiting to sample. I want to go back and try the fried okra, the mac 'n' cheese, and the corn bread, but that'll be another day soon. Business is booming, so be prepared to wait for your order. But it's worth it.

    (4)
  • Jeff B.

Best fried chicken in town. This is the original Ezell's chicken. They are way better than the joke of what is still called Ezell's chicken. The staff is always very friendly. The chicken is always cooked perfectly. I recommend going spicy. It is the perfect spice and makes the chicken even more delicious!

  • Ken H.

I placed our order at the counter and was told there would be a 10 minute wait because they would be cooking fresh chicken. That was great because fresh cooked chicken is awesome! As they started putting the order together I was told they ran out of chicken. Because it was too close to closing time they said they weren't going to cook any more and they were sorry. While it pains me to admit their food is awesome, it doesn't pain me in the least to say they don't care about the customer, or in keeping their word. My family quite literally went hungry this night.

    (1)
  • Emma P.

I called in to order and they told me it would take ten minutes. We got there in about ten to fifteen minutes. When we got there we said we had an order for pickup. They acted like they had the order but made us repeat it. We ended up waiting twenty minutes for the order watching several other identical orders be served ahead of us. What's the point of ordering ahead? Also, since when do you only get one hot sauce with a large order? That's ridiculous. I asked for one more hot sauce and the employee looked at me like I was crazy and said it was extra. Employees were careless and rude. The menu said our meal included a drink and the employee said that wasn't true. What's the point of spending money to be treated like $hit? We will not be going to this branch ever again. We will not be recommending this branch to anyone, ever. So disappointing. Our family and friends will hear this story so they can be spared a horrible experience.

One of the best (and pretty much only) fried chicken/ soul food places in town. I am so thankful for them as a WA transplant from the metro Detroit area. The restaurant is clean and the food is delicious and fresh. Keep up the good work. My only complaint is that they were short staffed during a dinner time rush. It was not the employees fault there was a long wait, but it could have been prevented with better timing and scheduling.

Once a while, I am craving for friend chicken. And, I will come here! This used to be Ezell's. I guess the husband and wife split. Then, Heaven Sent Fried chicken was born! Last time I had the chicken here, it was still Ezell's. I came here twice after the new ownership. I didn't think it was bad at all! I am a fan of their spicy dark meat fried chicken. It's very addicted. I brought party size to a couple parties and it's gone in seconds! If you are in the area, you don't have to drive somewhere else. Give this place a try.

  • Joe M.

Saw this place and decided to stop. I ordered spicy chicken strips mashed potatoes and gravy and a soda. Regular mashed potatoes and gravy were spicier then my spicy chicken strips. honey mustard sauce was from Hidden Valley Ranch. The roll I'm guessing came from a store. but the chicken tasted like chicken, with no added flavor what so ever. it was cool, but I would not eat here again.

    (2)
  • Amberly P.

Just not my cup of tea... Tasted very generic to me. The mashed potatoes and gravy needed a lot of salt to taste good. The chicken wasn't BAD, but just had zero flavor. My hubby asked for half spicy and half regular and they gave us all regular. My husband will probably be back because fried chicken is fried chicken to him but as far as me... Nahh not if I have a choice.

    (2)
  • Carissa C.

Decided to give this place a second chance and was still very disappointed. When it comes to good food, I'm willing to pay the price but for the chicken here, I would rather go to Popeyes. I also waited forever for my order and then discovered they forgot the two sides that came along with the meal. The only thing that I really enjoyed was the potato salad and the rolls.

    (2)
  • Lora I.

Best fried chicken in the area. Nom nom nom.

    (4)
  • Ali D.

Cheap fried chicken that's done right! I wouldn't say Ezell's is the best fried chicken I've had in the world but it sure is tasty and significantly better than many other fast food options you would find. Definitely worth a trip for a simple, no fuss fried chicken dinner!

    (4)
  • Eric W.

Good chicken. Their menu is super confusing though. The employees don't seem to be enjoying themselves and the actual restaurant is quite dirty. A little mopping would go a long way. But their chicken is pretty good. A bit overpriced as well

    (2)
  • Yah Babo D.

I can't come here often...i will die of a well deserved heart attack. It's not because there is grease on the chicken it's cause it would be the only thing I would eat day in and day out. I love getting fried chicken here...the 3 letter place...blah...come here if you want fried chicken. I love it so much that if I am just driving by and not even hungry I will still stop and pick some up for when I am hungry Downfall and reason why I can't give 5 stars...if you want to mix and match of if they run out of something and you want to order a larger meal but they don't have the right mix...they won't sell you it...that's just dumb....make the sale.

  • D.J. Y.

Damn good fried chicken, legal battles all aside this is the real deal. -1 star part is the counter service, wife called in order for a graduation party, but put it in my name, I gave the counter lady my wife's name, she made a weird face, and I suggested our last name, still no verbal or facial recognition of our order. Thank the fried chicken God's the cook was listening, he pointed to our order which he was putting the finishing touches on. I like the fact they cut holes into the top of the foil on large orders to release the steam to keep the chicken for going all soggy. Sadly with the steam release in the car, also began the drooling on the long drive to the park... Not really thrilled with the potion sides of the sides, nor with the flavors, but I don't come here for the sides! Spicy is good, not earth shockingly hot, but it depends on the cook that day, sometimes it is a bit too much for my spice-wimp better half. Keep on cook'n chef, damn fine chicken....

  • Ben G.

Pretty much the best fried chicken in the city, sometimes Mr. Ezell comes himself :) The okra is also really good!

    (5)
  • Andrea Marie B.

I have given this establishment a few different tries and I'm not feeling it. Nothing special or out of the ordinary. Not my cup of tea but maybe yours.

  • Chelsea J.

Last time I was here the guy behind the counter hit on me so I got a self esteem boost and good chicken. Can't ask for more than that! My review below still stands. Damn good chicken.

  • Dante M.

Some delicious fried chicken. I tend to go to the "Heaven Sent" franchises rather than the "Ezell's" as Ezell runs the former. Gotta support the man and his chicken! The only thing bad about Heaven Sent is that there aren't more locations. The spicy batch of chicken is always very tasty and juicy and their sides as well. I've also tried their strips as well and are a great alternative to the bone-in. Open up some more locations, Ezell!!!

    (4)
  • Amber A.

I do enjoy there spicy strips. Although I was kinda mad Cuz I went in, ordered the meal. You get a regular side with it, (menu price 2.25$) I asked to get mac and cheese, and she said it would be an EXTRA 3$... (list price is 3$) so go does that make sense? My calculations says at max it should be a 0.75c difference, I could get my meal, with a regular side, and get mac and cheese for 3$, and have more food.... either they are bobbing people. Or the girl needs more training

    (3)
  • Chris O.

The chicken strips with honey mustard are the best ever! The fries are very good. The rolls are good. The mashed potatoes are ok. But for me it's just chicken strips and fries and I'm a very happy guy. Don't bother calling ahead for takeout; unlike most restaurants it won't save you any time as they'll lose or forget your order, seemingly on purpose. Just show up, place your order, and wait for 10 minutes.

    (5)
  • Tiffany W.

Loved it. The rolls are amazing.

  • Lisa L.

Me and my gf ate at kfc this week and we got the big crunchy boneless bowl. KFC has gone 100% downhill since I was a child, the chicken was soggy, it wasn't crunchy, and there was zero flavor. My gf literally from the divethrue all the way home kept saying "azells is the best your going to be dissapointed!" Well....she was right! I am so blown away by there chicken I will never go anywhere alse. Crunchy, packed full of flavor and even the mashed potatoes (real potatoes) and gravy blew my frighten mind! So tasty! They have dark meat, corn cobs or regular corn (yes NOT from a can). If I could give thos place 10* I would. IT MUST BE HEAVEN SENT

    (5)
  • Kimberly P.

Okay, yes it is the same as Ezell's BUT it is really his. Seems funny the poor guy can't even keep the name of his own creation. I like Ezells, but the service at Heaven Sent is much better. Either place is not cheap, but we had a major mistake on our order at Ezells and Heaven Sent has always checked our order. Whenever possible I choose Heaven Sent over Ezells. Customer service is such a big part of a dining experience.

    (5)
  • Colin Y.

No point in calling your order in ahead of time for takeout. Called it in and they didn't start making until I came in and paid.

  • Brian Y.

Best fried chicken I've had since I left Texas.

    (5)
  • Jesse L.

Unbelievable fried chicken and chicken strips. Quality Mac and cheese also. This is the chicken that Oprah broke her diet for and called it the best in seattle. Mr and my friend still refer to it as Ezells, and the fried chicken is still that good.

    (5)
  • Erica C.

UH-MAZING!!!. It's too bad what happened with the whole company, but it's all good. Will forever be a returning customer. The chicken is just too good! Words can't even describe it, ha. (crispy, perfectly cooked, seasoned well...) Their sides are really Delicious as well! I love the baked beans a lot... Collard greens are yummy too. It can get a little pricey, but its for sure worth it. Staff is always friendly and nice. And if you don't know what to get, they always can refer something yummy. Go go go!

  • Kiaira R.

I ordered a Large catering order for my baby shower, 5 pounds of half and half chicken strips that came with 10 rolls plus I ordered 12 extra rolls. The chicken and rolls were fresh and delicious! I am very pleased with the service and the cost was cheaper than I expected. The only thing that could of been better is the box the food came in... lots of little paper containers. It would of been nice to have it in a foil pan since it was a large catering order. I'll definitely be back!

    (5)
  • Tiffany N.

This is some good fried chicken! I was born and raised in the south and I can tell you that this is as good as anything you'll find in the south, and that's really saying something. The crinkle fries were good, rolls, and the peach cobbler, all delicious. I will definitely be back!

    (4)
  • Jennifer P.

Prior to today, I would have given this place five stars. However, today, I went to go get a pound of spicy strips before a road trip I was taking and they were not open when they said on their hours posted. I was extremely disappointed with the venue at this point. At least be open when you say you're going to be open, so that I don't have to play the guessing game of "am I going to be able to get my chicken or not?"

    (3)
  • Jeff H.

The best fried chicken in Seattle FROM THE DUDE WHO ACTUALLY MADE IT ORIGINALLY! The fact that he got the Ezell's name stripped from him is an absolute crime. I have met the owner and he is very well mannered and wants to know everything you think about his place. This is the real deal straight from the guy who created it. Support Heaven Sent and their delicious chicken.

  • Samantha G.

Sort review: Tastes like Ezell's. "Longer" review: I had lunch with a friend here since we both were craving fried chicken and were curious about this place. The chicken does taste exactly like Ezell's except their spicy chicken is actually spicier than Ezell's but still mild. What I like about the place is that there are a few spots to dine in (counter style). I also like how they serve mac & cheese and collard greens as sides here, which are alright. Personally, I don't think it's something I would go out of my way for. If I happen to be in the area and craving fried chicken, I'll swing by Heaven Sent.

  • Bailey W.

I love good fried chicken, and this place fits the bill. Service was friendly and fast, chicken was fresh-no heat lamp dried out chicken for me! I am taking one star off because the mashed potatoes and gravy were on the bland side and they seem to have raised the prices Considerably! Just a good reason to make it a once in a while food I suppose.

  • Lauren T.

Very good! New to the city and was in the mood for southern food, which can be hard to find in Seattle. The original recipe was great and I'll try the spicy next time. Mac and cheese was also good for fast food. Collards were a little spicy for my taste, but still good. The prices are a little high and there's an unexplained wait time (the only reason I didn't give 5 stars).

    (4)
  • Jonathan C.

Best spicy chicken strips period. 10 bucks gets you a pound of glory. Highly recommend this place if you are in the mood for fried chicken.

I usually buy fried chicken at Albertsons. Eight pieces of dark meat for $6.95, or $4.95 on Mondays. I decided to try Heaven Sent for a change. Eight pieces of dark is not one of their options. They said it would be a special order and would cost over $21.00. I admit that it's probably better that Albertsons, but at three times the cost, I'll probably never find out.

  • Dov W.

In the past, I've enjoyed their food! (Amazing rolls, by the way!) But, when I had their fried chicken and fried okra a couple months ago, I was VERY disappointed. First off, because I love okra so much, I ordered a large, and it was quite a small portion. But, the worse part was that it was dripping in oil. And, the chicken was very oily, too. I ended up feeling very sick to my stomach from all the oil.

  • Amy T.

Let's get this straight, this place has decent fried chicken, but it's not Heaven sent by any means. I felt a little taken advantage of. A group of us stopped at the Starbucks beside this joint and although we already had breakfast, I couldn't resist the temptation of a good fried chicken. I mean, the mascot man had a t-shirt that said "God is good ALL THE TIME". The chicken must be amazing right? Again, it wasn't anything out of this world. Did I mention false advertising? The batter could have had more flavor and the chicken could have been juicier. I enjoyed the fresh baked roll more than the chicken itself. Honestly, if any of you visit Vancouver BC, I'd recommend trying Church's Fried Chicken. It's a hell of a lot better. #30DaysOfYelp 15/30

Really bummed on how the management has made this place so much worse since losing it to ezell's. Good chicken, bad service, high prices, not worth it.

  • P S.

Stopped in today for the first time and was pretty ecstatic that Ezell happened to just walk in while I was there and was super nice and gave me a fist bump lol. Now the chicken is identical to the original spot by garfield. Its just simply the best fast food fried chicken around. Everything was moist, tasty and awesome. The buns are so soft and yummy and the gizzards are awesome. I always get everything spicy but the original is great too. My kid gets the chicken strips and i have tried them and they are good too. The staff was super nice and professional, something the original Ezells lacked, I always had trouble with the staff there for one reason or another. The place is nice and clean and there is plenty of parking. Im super happy they have added a few items to the menu such as mac and cheese. I always wondered how the heck you have a chicken joint but dont have mac and cheese as a side at the original spot. They do charge 20 cents for a hot sauce which kinda sucked cuz I didnt know till I had already purchased my meal and didnt have any change and didnt want to run my card. But the girl was really nice and said well we will just get you next time and gave me o e for free anyhow. I wont forget to order hot sauce next time tho. I think it would be cool if they gave you one hot sauce per meal if you ask for it and charge you for a second or third if you need them. Cuz you got to have some hot sauce on some fried chicken man! In the end, I will be back again and again. And who knows, maybe Ezell will walk in when your there :-)

Spicy fried chicken is perfect level of spice, and with sides like mac and cheese, potato salad, mashed potatoes with gravy what's not to like? It would be nice if they had more seating - but now I'm just looking for something critical to say.

The is the ORIGINAL Ezell's Fried Chicken. It's the best I ever had outside of the South (Atlanta native). I personally like the spicy chicken wings, the yeast roll and the collard greens but any of their side dishes are fantastic. Look, he has a picture of him and Oprah in the restaurant. Need I say more?!? Helpful hint, park along side of Starbuck's in the Walgreen's parking lot, the spots directly in front fill up fast and are really hard to pull out of.

Two stars for the good chicken. That's it! The service is bad. Staff that is clearly lacking a solid leader. It's obvious they don't care and no one is holding them to it. Completely in their own social world and all on the bosses dime. No sense of urgency and no customer interaction like they used too. What happened? Clearly a change in management has happened and it was a bad one. I haven't been in in a while but they have "remodeled" since. Let me tell you, that fact that they don't care is everywhere in the details. I mean really, if you're going to replace the old (I think better) menu sign with a cheap generic one take 20 minutes and take down the old mount hanging right over the counter. The paint is cheap and spotty, the place looks cluttered and dirty. I don't know what happened to Ezels or what they morphed into. But you're set for failure and I bet you don't even know why. Good food doesn't cut it guys. It's about the experience and yours sucks. Get it together and hire a consultant before it's too late. Not even the big O can save you then.

The fried chicken speaks for itself. But what you really want here is the soul food sides that he makes and sells separately. Ezell Stephens also owns Willys BBQ in Columbia City, which serves BBQ and soul food. This might be one of the best mac and cheeses in the city. I always get an 8 piece chicken only half and half (spicy and mild), Large collared greens, and large mac and cheese. He is now making his desserts as ice cream (peach cobbler, bread pudding, sweet potato pie, vanilla).

Best chicken I have ever had. And their sweet potato pie, oh my. The potato salad, beans and okra are also amazing. Don't forget at least two rolls they'll melt in your mouth.

Service is tolerably bad. Chicken is pretty tasty, sometimes. At times it's overcooked. I used to eat here more, but the last time I went in, I saw the prices and just said, "No way--it's not that good." I walked out, followed by another person that said the same thing. Oh, the sides are not horrible, mostly.

On those days you don't want to settle for KFC, grocery store fried chicken, or just wings and don't want to drive into downtown or West Seattle for pricey fried chicken - you visit Heaven Sent in Seattle's Lake City neighborhood (near Walgreens, next door to Starbucks near the Shoreline/Seattle border). Pleasant and fast service, even during lunch or dinner rush. Usually only get the 2 or 3 piece snack packs (regular, spicy or 1/2 and 1/2), just chicken and a tasty roll (no sides or desserts). Just make sure you enunciate and speak clearly so your order doesn't get messed up and check your takeout bags for accuracy before you leave. Simple no nonsense fried chicken goodness.

the chicken is that this place is halfway decent however their hospitality sucks. this has got to be the most ghetto fried establishment outside the ghetto that I have ever encountered in my life. Its real simple, HOSPITALITY IS KING. Here is a sidenote, the location in woodinville understands hospitality.

  • Jay H.

It's still Ezell's just with a new name. He still owns this location so you'll see him in here from time to time; big smile and an over abundance of energy lead before him. Personally I don't really find anything amazing about the chicken here but it's another choice to have for lunch in the area. I always get the large spicy chicken strips and then douse them in BBQ sauce. The chicken is decent and the breading is pretty light with a little bit of spice to it. Their BBQ sauce is pretty standard "fast food" style BBQ sauce (more sweet than spicy) and, while not winning any BBQ contests, compliments my chicken strips nicely. If you get strips or a meal they include 1-2 biscuits (more like muffins). They're decent. I've had them when they're soft and buttery and I've had them when they've been burnt and crispy. It's an accessory to your meal not really a center piece. For the most part my orders are usually correct but they have forgotten an item or two on a few occasions or they've forgotten to provide the extra BBQ sauce I've paid for. Only tossing in two free sauces with a pound of chicken strips seems super cheap to me. Have you ever tried using two small sauces for a pound of meat?! I'm no magician! I can't do tricks! For me this is a good spot for lunch every once in a while. Come here with reasonable expectations and you should be just fine and enjoy your chicken. I'm a fan.

The chicken is good, but sometimes they stick you with small pieces, even when there are plenty of large pieces fresh and ready on the rack. That brings me to my number one complaint, customer service. It is very unprofessional, and they have a really terrible system that often confuses people's orders. I have seen them mess up a lot of orders whenever there is 5 or more parties waiting for their orders. Another complaint is that they increased the size of the sides with their individual dinner meals. It went from a regular portion for one person to a size that would only fullfill the hungriest people. Lucky for them I've noticed most of their customers are obese. The increase in size also means they charge more now. My last complaint is that they do a terrible job of managing their inventory. Every time I go in there on a Sunday they will be out of one or more sides. I go in there around 5pm too, it's not like I'm in there late at the end of the day. Sounds like they didn't do the math to figure out that when you increase the portions you need to produce more food. Pretty sad really. If you can deal with pitfalls then the chicken is pretty good.

The service was friendly and speedy, which was a relief after reading some of the reviews here. The food was VERY tasty. I live in the U District, and this place is worth the trip. The place wasn't especially clean or esthetically pleasing, but we will be back nevertheless.

If you like spicy Louisiana-style fried chicken, this place is awesome. It's one of the gems of Seattle. The spicy fried chicken is fantastic, the potatoes and gravy are noticeably freshly made and very good, as are the rolls.

I love HSFC. Or, what used to be Ezelles. To be honest I prefer this branch over the branch in Woodinville, although the one in woodinville is a bit more accessible. But there is a difference in the chicken, I think, probably due to the different owners. I always get the chicken strips spicy with a side of ranch sauce. I wasn't a big fan of the chicken breast still on the bone, came in a bit dry. But the strips are always moist so they have become my go-to choice.

Very friendly staff! Always smiling! Food is amazing! Way better than KFC or Popeyes. The large sides are pretty good in size as well!

the spicy fried chicken was perfect amount of spice, little bit of kick that lingered on the tongue without overpowering. best fried chicken I've had in seattle. the wings actually had MEAT on them. they looked more like drumsticks. the baked beans were phenomenally sweet and delicious, the mashed potatoes just the right amount of lumpy with awesome gravy, and the mac and cheese was to die for. I got an extra cornbread as I'm not typically big on rolls, but that was a mistake. the rolls are a tasty sweetbread, the cornbread was actually a bit dry. only disappointing part of the meal, actually. washed it down with a grape faygo, because PURPLE DRANK! and where else in town can you get faygo? will be back soon, gotta try the fried okra. heard great things about it. may end up with takeout next time, seating was a bit limited.

It wasn't until I was ordering that I realised this was no longer "Ezell's" but "Heaven Sent Fried Chicken". I only tried the spicy chicken and it was flavoured just-so... if that was spicy, I can imagine the regular non-spicy being a bit bland. The thighs were juicy, but surprisingly the wings were dry. Overall, the chicken is good but not amazing. The restaurant itself has no comfortable seating, just a couple small tables and a counter so I only recommend getting their chicken to-go.

For those unaware, this is the REAL Ezell's Fried Chicken. There's a long story you can find in the comments of this post, but suffice to say, go here instead of the one in the Central District if you want to support the man himself. Really there's not much to say about this place. It's the best fried chicken I've had (and I've eaten at premier places in the Midwest and South), the sides have improved dramatically (used to be pretty bad), and the pricing is still reasonable. Large spicy strips with BBQ sauce. Can't miss.

Sometimes you want some good old fashioned southern fried chicken and you want it now! Luckily, I don't live that far from Heaven Sent which is in the same spot as Ezell's. I was actually confused the other day because I drove over and thought, "wait a minute....where's Ezell's? But, ok, this is a fried chicken place..." I went ahead and ordered the 4 piece dinner and added on some pecan pie (why not?) and extra corn bread. I could hardly drive home fast enough to eat it. Got home and the fries were still pretty crispy (what was left from the drive over) and the chicken was very tasty. The skin was crispy and the meat inside was still fairly juicy. The seasoning was a little different than I remember, but it still tasted all right. I think next time, I need to order the spicy one instead of regular. The family and I shared the chicken and sides and it was plenty of food for 2 adults and 2 small children, but actually they don't count because they only ate the fries and corn bread. So, the service was about the same as I remember when it was Ezell's but I didn't go there a whole lot. Still for "fast food" fried chicken, this beats the colonel's any day of the week. The only thing that was disappointing to me was the pecan pie, but I am a little picky about that one. Still, it's an overall good value for what you get.

Ugh. Never again. This used to be Ezell's. Ezell's wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible either. Heaven Sent (with the same owner) is TERRIBLE. The batter was extremely thick, which wouldn't have been all that bad, if it TASTED like something. It was the definition of bland. The chicken wasn't any better either; it was extremely dry and tough. I was sorely disappointed. I honestly wished that I had gone to QFC and gotten a few wings instead. Worst. fried. chicken. EVER. How anyone could make fried chicken a bad experience is beyond me. Fried chicken = happiness. Not this time.

To be honest, I am teetering between 3 and 4 stars but I will be hopeful and go with 4. After trying both original and spicy, I'd have to say that the spicy is more tasty. Original is kind of bland to me but might be fine if you add some hot sauce. As far as the sides go, their mac and cheese is really tasty but I feel it is overpriced for the large. It costs a bit over $7 and the large isn't very large. I'd still get it anyway because it's there and probably the best side they have. The okra was okay but I ate them when they were kind of cold. I'd like to try it with spicy breading. The mashed potatoes were meh. I don't like that they added gravy on top rather than on the side. Wasn't a fan of the baked beans. Potato salad was good (just good). The gizzards are pretty tasty and I would get them again. I tried them with the original breading. I got the liver with spicy breading. I liked the spiciness but I don't think I am a huge fan of liver. The rolls are mediocre. I'd rather have the corn bread which is also good (just good). Their ice cream flavours are interesting. Sweet potato and peach cobbler. Both were delicious. The service was a-ok. They helped me make some decisions by giving me their input on what they liked. It can get pretty busy here. They've ran out of a certain item twice out of the three times I've been here. Not even close to closing time. Make sure you have an i.d. with your credit card because they always check which is weird to me for this kind of joint.

This is my favorite fried chicken place in Seattle. I normally get a breast and thigh with spicy crust. The crust is spicy enough to have a tiny tingle, but not much else. Otherwise, it's just simply a very crunchy, juicy, and flavorful fried chicken experience. My wife gets the breaded chicken strips and they are plump, full of juices, and crispy on the outside. Not much else you can ask for really. The baked beans are really tasty, like they have been simmering in a tangy BBQ sauce all day. The mashed potatoes are alright, but not great - I think they lack flavor and have WAY too much pepper in them. The bread roll that comes with most meals is fluffy and buttery, and if I remember correctly, the cornbread was also a home run although not as good as Dixie's. This is where I go to get great fried chicken to stave off hangovers.

  • Ayona D.

There is nothing spectacular about this chicken other than I didn't cook it. Let's start with the staff. There are 2 employees that have a tid bit of customer service, the rest SUCK. One speaks so fast that she is rushing you through your decision wether it's on the phone or in person with NO ONE else in line. They could care less about your business and it shows. About the food. The chicken is on most occasion super freakin greasy. That can be said for the okra too. The potato salad might as well be straight mayo and the roll is plain ass bread. Now about that pricing and portions. The chicken pieces are large enough but everything else is just freakin ridiculous. The small sides are maybe a half a serving for one person and that is being generous. I guess they don't really want every one enjoying that mayosalad. All this while the prices clearly state that you could be getting a better deal anywhere else in town. Back to the damn staff. They forget to place vital portions of your order in your bag, you call and inform them, they promise to correct it, and then they forget and question that they ever made the mistake in the first place. True story. Twice. Yea I was an idiot for going back. This place is clearly just running off of the fame of being mentioned on the Oprah show or whatever. Sh*tty meals, sh*tty service.

Hands down the best fried chicken I've ever had. I ordered the original white 2 piece dinner. The skin was crispy and great consistency. The meat wasn't too dry which is impressive for white meat. For sides I got baked beans and mashed potatoes and gravy. Both were good. The roll was great. I had the bread pudding and it was ok, definitely not great. It looked like they thawed it from the freezer and it was kinda watery in places. I'll be back and next time I'll try the spicy chicken! But no bread pudding next time.

I give it 5 stars to let people know how good the chicken is. There is no better chicken in the region. Just like the other reviewers, I concur that the service here is hit or miss. You never know if you're going to have good or rude service. It's the same at the Ezell's location.

    (5)
  • Neda G.

Chicken was absolutely delicious, but the service sucked. The woman who rang us up was rude and snapped at me. Over all I would probably go back, but if I got the same service then that would be it for me. Not to mention it is kind of expensive!

  • Terry B.

This had been our favorite fried chicken spot in all of north Seattle. We went there the first weekend that they were open and just loved it. But today all of that changed. Ignored at the counter--the woman who was running the front end seemed more intent on getting a big order out than acknowledging that anyone else was in the restaurant. We waited to place our order, watched her get it ready and then waited for 10 more minutes because she forgot to tell the cook that we'd ordered fries. I asked her to put the chicken back because by the time we would eat it there would be a soggy mess. She did, and then started repacking the order with the same chicken. Her excuse--she didn't have any more chicken! We requested a refund and left. Ezell--your chicken might be heaven sent, but your staff certainly isn't.

  • Lee L.

I ordered just two legs. You have dozens just sitting under the heat lamp, but I only want two. So why the hell was it necessary to stand around, walk back and forth and wait for the mash potatoes to mix before you grab two damn legs and stick them in a bag! Since she's just standing there, I'm guessing brain dead. I got back in line with my receipt, she asked me again, "how can I help you" Less than 5 minutes ago she helped me, but here short term memory must be shot. I showed her my receipt, and read it out to her because she still asked me, "what did you order" before she realized that she was the closet to the chicken but still managed to tell the other guy in the other room for him the bag the two legs. WTF!

    (2)
  • Karen G.

I love this chicken. It's so much better than Ezells because it is made fresh. I believe Ezells has the same recipe, but they fry in such large batches, that the chicken can be an hour or more old.

  • Ariana W.

I said this before and someone tried to be funny and take it down. But I will say it again. There is nothing worse than having a HUGE craving for some good fried chicken and you go somewhere and they ruin it for you. Like I have the craving right now. I went in to get the spicy strips meal. All of the strips were fried already sitting in baskets and as soon as I put my order in they dropped the already made fried strips into the grease. WHAT? Why would you re-fry my already fried strips. Food like this-especially fried chicken strips should be made to order. Oh and FYI-they did the same thing to the fries too. Who does that? Heaven Sent, that's who. Good Luck guys, don't say I did not warn you.

The as of a year or so ago, Seattle's "Ezell's" chain is under new ownership and new management thru forced sale (divorce/bankruptcy), and "Heaven Sent" is the newly-named chain actually run by Ezell Williams. I don't have opinions on the people or conflict, but you can tell by the food that this is the legendary "Ezell's Famous Chicken" of days past, serving up great fried chicken, gizzards, biscuits, and other comfort food. There is no better fried chicken in Seattle. The meat is fresh, the breading is crispy and spiced just right (don't order plain), and the biscuits are perfect. Faygo sodas are a nice touch, and hard to find anywhere else in these parts. The gizzards are a special order and take 10min, but worth the wait. A little more seating would be nice, and I could do without all the JeezusGodIsGreat woo-woo weirdness, but if you're going to clog your arteries with fried chicken, don't settle for anything less than Ezell's Heaven Sent Chicken.

Nothing to it, absolutely bland chicken. I had the original years ago and wasn't impressed then either, couldn't figure all the hoopla. I'm home and I still have a thigh left and it'll feed the fishes, can't think of a thing to do with it to give it any taste. Potato salad was inedible. Grandson called and they said 'next time it's free,' next time, ain't gonna be no next time. Wish there was a Church's Fried Chicken around, THAT'S good chicken. (Had to give it one star to get it posted, doesn't deserve even that.

I had a 2 piece meal w/roll and 1 side = $4.95 incl tax. The chicken was ok but not spectacular in any way - I would've eaten KFC instead if there was one on Lake City. The roll was the only ok part. The potato salad was absolutely disgusting. I had two bites, and only had the second bite cuz I was thinking "there's no way this really could be that bad, maybe my first bite was just off". Well, the second bite was still just as bad. It was like eating spoonfuls of mayo (barely any potato or anything else in there).

    (2)
  • Angela B.

Horrible, tasteless, dry, hard chicken. Uh really KFC would have been better and I cannot even believe that I said that! The potatoes and gravy were gross, greasy and just nasty. The cole slaw was odd tasting, the baked beans are probably canned, and not even good canned beans. The only saving grace was the bread roll, which is pretty sad. This dinner was a complete waste of $40 bucks save yourself from dining here. I don't care what the other reviews say this place sucks. If the owner reads this please do something about this restaurant it is in need of a serious quality and taste test.

We absolutely love Heaven Sent Chicken! The chicken is so moist and delicious - exactly what fried chicken should be. And the rolls - so good! My husband loves the peach cobbler as well. We feel so lucky to have Heaven Sent only a few miles from home - it is the perfect place to get our fried chicken fix!

The best in the city; used to be Ezell's but the poor guy apparently lost the rights to his own restaurant. Anyways, this is his only store now so I choose to go here over the one in the Capitol Hill area to support the original.

Never been here before but was told it was a Seattle Institution - Walked in asked the lady what was the most popular sides... She said Mashed Potatoes with gravy and coleslaw - I ordered 2 thighs and 2 medium sides of Mashed Potatoes and Coleslaw... I head out to Magnuson Park for a picnic - open my meal and I have 2 thighs and 1 small potato salad (about the size of a shot glass) - HOLY CRAP - I check my receipt and it says 2 thighs - 1 medium mashed potatoes - 1 medium coleslaw... Freaking Moron who works there... I'm not driving back to complain - I will just never go there again - The chicken was just ok - I was hoping it would better... nice crusty outside but no flavor...

I stopped into this place based upon the reviews I read here. It's a tiny place that's easy to miss if you don't know where it is or you're simply driving too fast. I knew what I wanted to try going in the door but still forgot one thing. I think it was because the person at the counter though polite seemed to be rushing me to make decisions when I was the only person in there. I ordered the 8 piece meal spicy. The counter person repeated several times, "You're sure that's what you want? You're sure that's what you want?" I'm not sure why I found this annoying, however. It did seem a bit pricey. $27.14 for 8 pieces of chicken, 4 rolls, mashed potatoes and gravy and coleslaw. The chicken was tasty with a hint of spicy though not strong. It was more of an afterburn but not unpleasant. The wing was much larger than the competitions though the other pieces seemed about the same size. The mashed potatoes and gravy seemed spicier than the chicken. I liked the coleslaw. It had kind of a creamy texture. The rolls were mildly sweet. I wanted to try the peach cobbler but forgot to order it because I felt rushed. After I placed my order and paid for it I changed my mind and asked if I could make the order all dark to which the counter person replied that she couldn't because it was too late to change my order even though I was willing to pay more. I just let it go. I may go back to try the original chicken. Overall, it wasn't a meal I'd go too much out of the way for. I'd appreciate friendlier service.

I've never been the type to eat out at a certain place several times a week and get into a habit of ordering the same thing every time and have exact change for what I'm ordering. Heaven Sent has done this to me. And I've only recently discovered it and have not even tried all of the sides/desserts/menu items. My go-to: The 3 piece dark snack pack. Two thighs, a drumstick and a tasty fluffy sweet roll. I used to just stick with original until one day I decided to try the spicy. I only asked for one piece of spicy and the other two to be original. Instead she just made all three spicy. Which is fine because I fell in love with it. It's so much more flavorful and juicy and really isn't that spicy in the burning sense. The first couple of times I thought the original was kind of bland. Could use more salt. But I ate it anyways because I love fried chicken and the crispy skin. As far as sides, I love the fried okra. You have to wait about 5 minutes but it's totally worth it. Comes out hot and fresh from the fryer. One day I'll try more of the sides and maybe their desserts. Bread pudding or cobbler.

Many people know Heaven Sent as Ezell's chicken... same instution just different name. What's important is that it's the same great fried chicken and fabulous prices! I highly recommend the spicy chicken and for sides the mashed potatoes (without gravy) and the beans are really good. I'm also a fan of the muffin rolls that come on the side. The really nice part is you can literally walk in and get your take out in less than 5 mins and to feed a couple people is really affordable, we're talkin $20-30 depending on what you order. This is a take out only place though, just a small counter to sit at.

Sides SUCKS!!! Chicken is a nice deep coloured fried but not very taste other than salt.

  • Stan W.

One word....GARBAGE. Learn how to season your chicken. It's bland and not a way to earn return customers. Whether it's the chicken or sides...it had NO flavor!! The gravy tastes like flour with mushrooms but, there are no mushrooms. If that makes any sense at all. I would recommend Popeye's in Renton or Church's Chicken in Federal Way that do serve great fried chicken. Sadly, in North Seattle we have nothing to offer when it comes to Soul Food. Best option is to make it yourself rather then wasting money on overpriced nonsense that doesn't deserve your time nor money. The owner needs to decide whether to give up and re-evaluate his business with brand new recipes. Or close up and move on. Doesn't take a genius to understand why this place gets low ratings. Really frustrates me when I see such a poorly ran business.

  • G D.

Although the interior to this place isn't anything to write home about and the crew behind the counter usually looks like they'd rather be elsewhere... the chicken is good enough that any criticisms I have are more or less irrelevant. 1/2 lb. of the original chicken strips with a leg and a roll, it really doesn't get any better. You will not have better fried chicken unless you go to Ezell's.

    (4)
  • Unjeela G.

Their chicken is so crispy and juicy, plus the potato salad and rolls are delicious. I must've only come here on good days, so hopefully i won't come on an "off" day like what some ppl are experiencing. Kinda pricey, though...

  • Toby S.

Disgusting, grey chewy meat under the thick ,bland coating...This chicken is not even remotely similar to what they served when this place first opened.
