The food was good, we ordered a burger and the truffle mac and cheese which was great! The service was good. I was there for a friend's birthday so we ordered a round of shots which I felt were over priced.

3.5 stars. The rating is just for the downstairs space in terms of brunch and dinner. Head there for brunch and just the service itself is a treat. Jonathan is a sweetheart and really makes you feel at home. The food is a good mix of American with some interesting options. I had a phenomenal Polenta for the Father's Day brunch, which they honestly need to bring back. Otherwise have their golden beet & sweet potato hash and it was solid. Their bloody mary is good as well! For dinner, def give the grilled cheese & tomato bisque combo a try. I still dream about it. Going here for the butterfly lounge is another story though. That I will never endorse. It's hot and sweaty, charges cover, and its bouncers are just downright rude. That said, the crowd ain't that great either. So just go for food and drinks and you should be set!

The bounce staff is INCREDIBLY rude. They attempted to take my (very real) ID, condescendingly referred to me as "sweetheart" when telling me I couldn't get in, and then yelled at me when I asked them to explain what was wrong. The final straw was when they charged my friends to get inside, but wouldn't refund them when I was asked to leave. I will never be coming back, and neither will my friends.

One of the worst bar experiences I've ever had in a city. The bouncers are nasty and ignorant of decency and service to happy customers who want to spend money in their bar. The bartenders look at you with indifference as you order an over priced well drink that's $12. Average drinks at best. I will never visit this bar and recommend that you don't as well.

It would be very easy to like Grim's: mason jars, cacti on the tables, the distressed furniture, and gastropub-inspired menu (the arugula salad is fine). We went for the Thursday 8PM Bar Trivia, but the entire bar was EMPTY. Either way, we ordered drinks and food and proceeded to answer the first round. Forty minutes later, the quiz master finally calls it and tells us that the trivia is a bust as we were the only team playing. Realistically, he could have called it earlier as opposed to spending time on Facebook. To top it off? We ordered well drinks, but got charged premium cocktail prices.

It takes a special occasion to get me here... I kind of think this place is like hell on earth with the huge line out front, young people running into me, hot/sauna like dance floor with people making out, uncomfortable seats, and having to pay cover. I came here at least twice for birthday parties but besides this I wouldn't want to touch this place with a ten foot pole. If you are really young and like a pick-up scene then this is your place.

Tucked away not far off of Broadway, Grim's has got great drinks great food and awesome looking upper rooms (butterfly & forest themed). Stop by if you're in the Capitol Hill neighborhood!

Absolutely love the little mason jars they serve their drinks in. I also really like the Butterfly Lounge which is on the 2nd floor. It's a cool chill spot and I believe you can reserve it for private parties. The top floor has dancing which I'm all about, but it gets pretty hot up in there. With all that said, I hate it when they make us stand in line outside when it's clearly not packed in the inside. I know that other places do that too to make it look like it's a happening spot, but I dont like it hence the 4 stars out of 5.

  • Lauren P.

This place was pretty solid, I'd say. The line is the reason why I gave it only 4 stars. The decor is really modern/rustic, which I really liked. The bartender that was walking around selling the shot specials was really nice and wasn't pushy. I tried the neopolitan shot... It was weird, but it got me goin.' The crowd here is really nice too, and the music is okay. The bathrooms are kind of dirty, but I mean, it's a bar.

I am absolutely disgusted and dissatisfied with me and my friends evening at Grims. The bounce staff is disrespectful. Me and my friends came for the evening and our friend from out of town was accused of having a fake ID after the rest of us had paid cover. None of us were given a refund and we were then treated with disrespect by the door staff. Never coming back here. I wish I could give no stars.

Super rude. Disrespectful. The bouncer was being a DIVA. I would give no stars if possible.

Grim's is THE place to go when you have a large group of friends and no reservation!Twelve of us dropped by here around 8.30pm on a Saturday evening and man, were we glad to see the community style tables seating exactly twelve. The menu, which has the appearance of being small, has a number of excellent comfort food options, including several vegetarian ones. You really can't go wrong with any of the appetizers (we tried all the vegetarian ones), although I particularly recommend the garlic cheese bread and roasted cauliflower crostini. For the main course, the grilled cheese sandwich is to die for! Prices are pretty reasonable ($6-$8 for appetizers and $12 for the entree), especially when you have a large group! They're also really nice about splitting the bill amongst several people.

Terrible experience. Waited in line to get into the bar when the female bouncer didn't like my friend and claimed she was "too drunk". My friend was sober and acting fine. This bar seems too judgmental, sexist, and racist. Would never come and and would never recommend. Capitol Hill is too fun to go to a bar like this -- don't waste your time

    (1)
  • Jacqueline D.

0 stars if I could. Terrible security and disrespectful. Bouncer took a friends ID, called it fake and it "made her night"... even though it was real. Very rude. X'd other friends hands because they "were drunk" when they were perfectly fine.... Just a terrible experience overall. Do not go, ruined our night.

My friends and I went to Grim's to celebrate a birthday and were extremely pleased! We got there around 8 o'clock and ordered dinner and a few rounds of drinks. I got the pulled pork BBQ sandwich and even though they were out of pork so it had chicken in it, it was delicious! Other popular dishes at our table were the blue cheese burger and the mac and cheese! While our server was super sweet and took great care of us, we spent at least 15 minutes waiting for our check because the bar got super busy while we were eating. After dinner, we headed up stairs to do a little dancing. As others have already said, the dance floor is tiny!! And there's a big fan that (while I understand it's purpose) was super annoying to accidentally walk into. The female bartender was nice and made our drinks perfectly but when we went to the male bartender, my vodka tonic was horrible :( So bad that I couldn't even finish drinking it! Regardless, my friends and I will definitely be making another visit to Grim's soon.

Never ever ever again! The night starts with us waiting in line for at least 45 minutes. Sure make us wait out in the cold it when it doesn't even look that crowded inside. A line outside your bar will make it appear as if it's poppin lol. Anyway we go up to the top floor. A couple of my friends don't have cash, so I pay their cover. Not knowing how much it'd be, I paid $30 ($20 + $10 bill). I don't notice until about 10 minutes later that the girl gave me $5 back, when I should've gotten $10...a meager difference but I decided to go back to her and tell her she'd given me the wrong change. However of course in this kind of setting the customer isn't always right, and she rolled her eyes at me, answering with "I don't know" every time I tried to explain the situation. I swear she didn't know any other sentence. I went and talked to the manager but he wasn't any help either. Looking back on it the $5 doesn't even bother me. What bothers me now is how badly the staff handled the situation and how they treated me like I was stupid and trying to scam them out of $10. Seriously, what's the point of lying about $10?!

Honestly if I could give no stars, I would. My two girl friends and I came to Seattle from Cali (woohoo!) to celebrate her 22nd birthday. We decided to come to Capitol Hill to bar hop. I would definitely say visit UNICORN since that bar actually respects its customers. However, JAKE at Grim's definitely made us never want to go to bars again in Seattle. He was beyond rude and cocky. I told him it was our friend's birthday and asked if there were any specialty drinks we could pay for. He stated that he's heard that one before in regards to it being someone's birthday and that we could pay or leave. We were literally shocked. We never asked for a free drink and we said we would pay yet he kept insisting that he's heard that one before. We felt beyond disrespected. My friend said she would show him her id because he was just SO rude. He said he didn't need to see it and that we could leave the bar. But he was fucking rude and threatened us saying he could kick us out. Being disrespected like that especially at a bar that SHOULD pride itself in customer service was a first. We will literally NEVER come to this bar again and do not recommend others. They obviously only care about the revenue, which could increase if they understood how to treat customers properly. He stated that "it depends on his mood" what the specials are. WHO SAYS THAT. We are not familiar with Seattle but being treated like that is definitely not okay for anyone. P.S. Thank you Jake (the manager?) for literally making my friend's birthday experience one of the worst ones. We owe you. So here's this review especially dedicated to you!

We went for a large group birthday. We were told that we needed to pay so much money in bar tabs and food in order to use the room. Our group of over twenty people had well over two drinks each and some people had more plus food yet the math didn't add up somehow. The management handled the situation very poorly. The entire bar had no central air/ac so it was hot throughout the entire place.

Community tables with not-so-comfortable seats, but bordering the restaurant are really cozy chairs to relax in. The server was very inviting and on his game! Never made our Indecisiveness seem like an annoyance. We got a few drinks and made sure to upgrade to Tito's vodka.... good pours! Loved the mason jars too. Chose the artichoke spinach dip with baguette as our filler...happy with that choice. Came fresh out of their oven topped with delicious melted cheese. Looking forward to coming back for their grilled cheese sandwiches!!

  • Robert Q.

went here on a happy hour, the meatball was really something. The roasted beef with the melted havarti was really great. Even just one smell of it, it would make you reall crave for more of it. But there is one thing that I don't like in this place. Their hamm sammich, didn't like the taste of it. Maybe there's a food that even the people around you loves but you didn't like. Will come back again. I had a great time.

Love the concept of drinks in mason jars. Went in on a very quiet day, right off the main road. If you get the chance, stop by and check it out

This is specific to Sunday brunch - Grim's remains one of my go-tos for evenings. Sat down at one of the few 1x1 tables along the side wall - as many reviewers have commented, the across-the-width-of-the-restaurant "picnic" tables are great for groups. Service was attentive (the restaurant was nearly empty). They have a nice list of omelets, buckwheat pancakes and French toast. The omelet and fried potatoes were good although mine was slightly undercooked (my date's was perfect). My only complaint besides the evening-loud music was that when my date ordered a screwdriver, the excellent, huge rustic glass of orange juice received so little vodka that I couldn't even smell it after she asked me to check because she couldn't taste it. She had to order another shot. Tsk, tsk! Staff says that they will soon add trivia games at 1pm on Sunday. Overall, okay, but I can wish for better.

Bouncers didn't accept a real because they didn't recognize out-of-state identification. Bouncers were also incredibly rude. First visit to Seattle and it is very apparent there are much better bars.

  • Sarah M.

Horrible bar, bouncer turned down our 23 year old friend with a New York ID that was real. Line took too long and the bouncer was incredibly rude. To top it off all of our other friends got in and paid the cover fee to get to a crowded and dirty dance floor, and they refused to give our money back following our friend's rejection. Won't be coming back, and those of us who got in were wildly unimpressed.

Good drinks and you can usually find a place to sit even on Fridays and Saturdays. Dance floor upstairs is also fun, costs $5.

  • Luke W.

Wow this place went downhill fast. Have been going here for Sunday bunch for a long time. Apparently they recently changed owners. They did change those weird swivel chairs which was a plus. But that's the only plus. Sunday brunch now is obliterated by a very loud obnoxious trivia MC. Multiple orders were wrong. It took us forever to get our check. Won't be coming back Sunday mornings any more....it's too bad.

Usually a "first stop" place for my friends and I who are starting the night off chill. You have to get here relatively early or else you'll be stuck in a long line outside the door. No cover which is great. It's pretty crowded inside with limited seating. Small bar, so waiting for that is kind of a pain. Service is great even on busy Friday/Saturday nights, food is pretty good (love the artichoke and spinach dip with crostinis), and the drinks are alright. The butterfly room looks awesome, but it's usually closed off for private parties the times I've walked by it. There's another bar upstairs at the dance floor where you have to pay a $5 cover to get up there, and it's a freakin steamroom! With heat rising, sweaty bodies dancing, and little (basically no) ventilation, it's a little hard to breathe. The music varies, so I get a little confused when I'm shaking my booty to a rap song and then it suddenly switches to an 80s rock and roll hit. I always tend to come back here since it's in the heart of Cap Hill, but I'm sure there are better bars/restaurants on Cap Hill that I have yet to experience.

I really like the concept of Grims. Drinks in a mason jar, the industrial style tables and stools. They have a great DJ that plays an awesome mix of dance music. I have had fun dancing here on several occasions..upstairs in the butterfly room. It is a good mix group of ages and people. I dont feel out of place here when I go with my younger friends. Although some of the folks dancing here could film for a soft porn movie....get a room people. Last time we were there one person got kicked out for giving the bouncer a hard time I guess. She was getting some air and the bouncer told her to get out of the way..she asked of what? And the bouncer said I dont need lip from you. This is a case of power trip, remember buddy you are merely a bouncer not a member of the swat team. I find it ironic how you cant talk back, if that is what you call it, to the bouncer but they will let people act like fools dancing with each so dirty it makes the people around them uncomfortable. But like I said it was a matter of someone exercising power and feeling good about it. Also I don't drink hard alcohol and stick to the beer. This place has a few occasions severed warm bottled beer. GROSS. I don't pay 5 bucks for warm beer. The bartenders and bar backs need to figure it out and keep the beer cold. I am sure I will be back since the DJ is really good but not because of the people who work there.

Haven't been here for food (yet) but this is one of my favorite places to go dancing in Seattle! Saturday nights up in the Woods fosho. Pros: Mason jars. Music (on Saturdays not Fridays). Only $5 cover to dance and price doesn't go up. Bouncer calls people out for cutting. Cons: Lines on lines on lines. Dirty bathrooms.

  • Alanna M.

If you're looking for some comfort food like a grilled ham & cheese or some meatballs this is the place for it. We had a big group so we sat at the table with the round chairs that don't move. It's almost like I'm either sitting in prison or in a grade school cafeteria again. They sell Hamm's beer in a can so definitely a laid back, chill environment. There's 3 levels. The second is the Butterfly Lounge which I haven't spent much time in. When the sun goes down, the third floor opens up for some dancing. Love the natural smell of "the Woods". Great music, but it can get packed, stuffy and hot! Be prepared to sweat because there are no windows for air circulation. Don't forget long lines for the bathroom too. $5 cover.

  • Melissa F.

Hey, how about a quick pop off into Grim's for a drink at 3pm? Sure! Wait, there's no one here but us. Oh well! Drinks are surprisingly well-made given the laid-back and a teeny bit bitchy attitude by the bartenders. I guess I have no complaints if your drinks are good. (I ain't payin' you to talk??) Atmosphere was decent and my guess is the place can get pretty well packed. One thing I can't get over is the seating. Booths (pews?) along the wall are fine. All of the seating in the middle is like cafeteria-style, but with these weird round swivel things that you sit on. Not only are the little wooden rounds too small to be comfortable for my tush, the arms are sort of bent so that it's impossible to stay in one spot without constantly pushing down and keeping your weight on one leg. It's like trying to get comfortable while your weight is unbalanced. I guess it's a good thing for those yummy drinks!... Until you have too many and fall off, I suppose. I keep hearing about grilled cheese. I guess I'll find a night when my butt is up for an uncomfortable ride (ha ha) and come back in for cheesy goodness and more surly but delicious drinks.

The decor caught my eye as we walked past last Saturday night -- long wood tables, industrial exposed beams and metal work, cocktails in Mason jars -- just the right amount of hipster to feel appealing without reading over-the-top. We saddled up to the bar for a round of cocktails. Imagine the horror of discovering a Grim's Old Fashioned is bright cherry red -- as if there were cherry syrup lining the glass. And no, the taste did not make up for the look. Truly the worst Old Fashioned I've ever had. To be fair, we had just come from Bravehorse which has pretty decent cocktails and knows how to pour whiskey. That may have slightly colored reactions. All in all, I could only choke down half the drink over a span of 1.5 hours ... Not the way you want to spend a Saturday night.

So, I used to recommend this place to friends if they asked for a good place to go out and dance. Yeah, there's usually a line, yeah it's usually crowded and you have to fight to get a drink. But. It was always worth it... well it used to be. There's a security guard b**** who should lose her job; me and my boyfriend used to go here all the time, and recommend/take out of townwers here for a fun night out. But this prejudice b~ just lost them that service. Congrats lady.

I like Grim's a lot. They really have it all going for them. It's fun as a bar at night and the Woods is a fun place for dancing! They also serve some tasty food! I went recently for brunch and was pleasantly surprised! The Bloody Mary was excellent! I ordered the Eggs Benedict with roasted potatoes and it was very good. The Benedict was served on a biscuit which is a bit different than I'm used to. I went for dinner last night. The menu was pretty big but everything seemed heavy aside from the salads. Lots of meat, cheese, and bread dishes. Heidi P. and I shared the pork belly ($10 for a big portion and it was excellent!), the mushroom croquette ($8- we both agreed this was good but a bit under seasoned), and the bread pudding. I ordered the Painted Hills burger on a Macrina bun with cheddar cheese for $12 which included a small side salad. Heidi got the tuna casserole. My burger was very good. I think the food in general is a good value for the quality and price. We were impressed by the reasonable prices. Of the items we ordered I would order the pork belly and the burger again. I am a big fan or Grim's and will enjoy going whenever someone suggests it! I look forward to trying the fancy grilled cheeses at some point, too.

Myself and three others came in tonight to have dinner and drinks and after sitting down for about 10 minutes without a server addressing us we left. A group of four younger hipsters came in and sat down and got service immediately. Upon feeing sighted, we left and on our way out told the doorman. He was unaffected by the horrible service. If you're over 30, you should keep walking by to another establishment down the street where the service was phenomenal.

I came here once were I sat at the butterfly lounge and had food and drinks on their happy hour menu. The food was nothing memorable. The butterfly lounge itself is beautiful. I enjoyed the vibe that it gives and would go back to Grim's just for the butterfly lounge. On the other hand, I came here to "dance" one night. They had a long line. The dance floor was on the third floor. I felt the floor trembling as I stands in the middle of the dance floor. I'm sure the architecture was designed to hold the weight but it is quite packed on weekends and i'm not sure if the trembling floor was intended. There was nothing special about the dance floor. They play hip hop/top 40 on Saturday nights. The worse part is how rude the bouncers are. They made people feel unwelcome. I felt uncomfortable with myself by just standing in line waiting to get back into the third floor after having to go to the 1st floor to use the bathroom because the bathroom on the third floor had a dozen people waiting. The bouncer was rude and asked me to wait in line while allowing other people who had the same paid wristband to go first.I stood in line for a good 15-20 minutes before I was allowed back in again. I was furious. Never going back here again. The only reason I stood there in line to go back up stairs is because my friend was up there and I told her I would not leave her that night.

Ok, so I came here on a Sunday evening/late afternoon, as per my normal treks to Capitol Hill. I prefer emptyish bars... Most of the time. So we get to Grim's and the first impression is good. Comfy arm chairs, big wide open space, aesthetically pleasing, and they have a cool butterfly room bar with bench seats upstairs (wasn't open). Our waitress/bartender was nice and attentive. I'm not going to go back though, because of one major flaw that no bar should have: expensive, watered down drinks. I don't mind an expensive drink if I just got paid AND the drink is delicious/worth it. A six dollar watery gin and tonic does not a happy Stephanie make. Also, I hate mason jars as drinking glasses. Stop it!

Came here for a bachelorette party and danced upstairs. The space is pretty neat. Not mind-numbing loud. There are strong air blowers placed throughout the floor, so it's nice to hang out by one of those and take a break. I don't know how to describe the music. Just loved whatever the DJ was mixing up. $5 cover isn't bad either.

Never never ever coming here again.Came here Saturday evening with 3 of my girls, we decided to have a girls night out, we hardly get to go out because of our schedules and was looking forward to a great night. The customer service there was amazing and food was delicious, the grilled cheese sandwiches are very popular however a bouncer there who's name was Gareth took himself way too serious he let us know there was a private party that started at 10:00pm so I understood, when the time came we went to the third floor I decided I wanted to get a drink when I realized I never tabbed out and was missing my card.I went back downstairs and my gf was my witness the bouncer Gareth literally screamed at me and said "OH MY GOD ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS? ,...YOU HAVEN'T GOTTEN YOUR FUCKING CARD"? Never in the time I've lived here in Seattle since I've moved here have I been spoken to or had that kind of service, honestly he was extremely rude to my girlfriends and many people in general that night.I honestly thought it was a great place but because of this experience I'm never bringing my business here again and I'm telling all my friends not to go there.Staff are not professional and sure as hell I don't deserve to be disrespected like that. I still need to call and speak with the manager of the restaurant and tell him/her my experience.

Went here for a late lunch one weekday because we heard they had a good happy hour selection. But when getting there around 4 there was no happy hour offers. Ordered the bruschetta grilled cheese with a cup of tomato bisque. The tomato bisque was the best part. Creamy but had a slight kick of heat. Also ordered cocktails, they came very strong and not as tasty as they look. Service was okay but not attentive enough. Music and ambience was great, although very dark unless you're by the window.

Grim's has one of the best brunch menus on Capitol Hill, and you don't have to offer up your first born to pay for it. ($4 mimosa?! Um, yes please!) My husband and I try and stop by here for brunch whenever we can. My favorite dishes are the Capitol Hill Scramble and the Breaded Egg. Not only is good range of items on the menu, but it is frequently updated, and I have yet to have a bad dish come out of the kitchen. The only thing that kept this from being a five star review is the speed of service. The brunch server is super nice, but I feel like they should have another person on shift helping him out.

As others have said, go for the pork belly! This is my favorite pork belly. Sweet and savory, wouldn't mind a bigger portion, but it's actually a pretty (un)healthy size. I've been here a bunch specifically for that; I should probably try some other things on the menu. I really like the communal tables and atmosphere. I've been here during the block party and the 2012 election night and it was mondo crowded but I still had a great time. Other nights it's just another restaurant in a cool location with friendly people.

Best thing about this place? The decor. I was diggin' it as I walked in. The ceiling lights were kind of cool and it had a very chill ambiance about it. Dope. When I got there, there was a table by the window. It was sure cozy and a little "breezy" because the AC was close by. But let me tell you about them seats. You really sink into them and it is one of the most uncomfortable feelings when you're trying to move around and you sink back into the seat and the same position you were in before. I think I was hunched over most of the night leaving me feeling fairly awkward. Ow my back. I'm 26. Ow. We ordered some cheesebread, which was good. Big pieces. Cool. Drinks wise, there was... beer. And other special cocktail beverages. But I decided I didn't want to get trashed, but wanted whiskey so I settled for a whiskey sour. It kind of tasted like a cup full of limeaid. Where was the whiskey? And the other drink my friend had tasted like it didn't have any alcohol either. After we finished that, we wanted beer. Manny's will do. But alas, they were out of Mannys. O_O Why? On a Saturday? So then I settled for a Stella and just kind of drank through the pain of the experience. I had great company, just the whole setting was off. Would I come back on a different night? Maybe. But i'll have to really be in the mood.

Got a $11 double gin and tonic that I had to stop drinking because it was only flat tonic with no gin. They clearly watered down their booze because I watched the bartender pour a "generous" amount of gin. Also upstairs felt more like a frat party than a club. The floor felt like we were going to fall through at any moment. Not worth the line or the prices. I won't be going back.

I like me some Grim's. Food wise, everything I have tried here has been pretty damn good. Granted, im a cheese fiend so anything gooey & delicious smacked between yummy toasted bread is bound to make me happy. Of the 3 options the tomato, basil, & prosciutto with gruyere was my favorite. For other noshings - the artichoke crostini was tasty, the french dip sandwich solid, & the cheese plate delectable. Drinks can start adding up -- but they are tasty and decent sized. I very much enjoyed the Blood and Sand and their Moscow Mule is quite yummy. Not the best prices on the block but you wont be breaking the bank either. Service has always been great when i've been here. Drinks come fast, the waiters/waitresses sharp and on the ball. Decor is fun but nothing I haven't seen elsewhere. High ceilings, steel accents, amber lighting, communal tables, etc etc. Moody in a good but not so unique way. Amazing grilled cheese + tables to accommodate large rowdy groups + good drinks + a waitress smart enough to keep separate tabs = a good time and a pretty awesome place to nosh, booze, and catch up with friends.

Popped my Grim's cherry on Friday evening during the tail-end of happy hour. The experience was ...delightful. I'm not a fan of the location; it's not really my scene. But I did really enjoy the way the place was decorated, the ambiance and feel was comfortable and welcoming: community tables surrounded by smaller, two-person tables and a cozy patio in front. The waitstaff was great - attentive but not over-bearing. My French 75 wasn't bad--not the best I've had, but one I would recommend to friends. Something about it brought me back to my childhood; I couldn't tell if it was the "rock candy" simple syrup they used, the lemon, or what. Overall, I'd suggest you give Grim's a shot. It has a lot of potential - they just need to tone down the over-done hipster, 80s-vintage vibe and bring it a little more down to earth.

How FUN! For the Halloween weekend, my friends and I stopped by this place to get a little dancing in. We walked upstairs and found it....empty. But it was perfect that way! We got to dance to some pretty good music without having to worry about getting trampled on! The drinks were really good and came in adorable mason jars! The bartender was so nice, too! He made us tasty Dirty Shirleys and Stoli Apples! Also, the cute barn-like atmosphere was fun!

The Butterfly Lounge is a cozy, stylish way to sip on some drinks on a Friday night. The room is other-wordly-a mix of the old and modern. We were able to order drinks and find a table and bench to sit quickly with still enough people in the bar to bring a good summer night vibe. I ordered the specialty cocktail, the French '75 which consists of gin, champagne, lemon juice & rock candy syrup ($7.50) because I can't pass up a champagne cocktail. I would have liked the drink if it was sweeter. It was very strong and definitely got me buzzed up. We payed $3 ($3 before 11pm/$5 after) to go up to the 3rd floor. We found a dj playing house music, a spacious floor, bar, and long windows to people watch like the guy twirling an umbrella watching his reflection in the Value Village window. The green lights gave a futuristic feel. The wooden beams, high ceilings and tall windows gave the dancefloor an openess. The Butterfly Lounge and the 3rd floor dancefloor were definitely cool for Friday night hangout.

I would not have known about this place if it wasn't for my fellow yelper, Inna B!! I was wandering around aimlessly knowing I needed food, but since I am not as familiar of the offerings on Capitol Hill and really couldn't decide on what I wanted to eat I sent her a text and she gave me three options. This being the first. I looked it up on my iPhone and the first review that showed mentioned something about grilled cheese sandwiches... SOLD, I was on my way!!! Nothing really points you to this place except a fold up sign that sits on the sidewalk, but once you walk in, that didn't matter much!! The place has a great style to it, with large floor to ceiling windows that let's in lots of light. In the front is a restaurant style sitting area and in the back is the bar. Their food is AMAZING. I think this would have to be the 1 of the 3 top grilled cheese sandwiches (don't ask me to rate amongst the 3 though, they all have their own uniqueness) and will become a regular place when I have a craving for them. Service was definitely friendly and who could beat the price!!! For a grilled cheese sandwich and a side salad, I got out of there for $7. Since this place is on a side street in Capitol Hill, I would have never stumbled upon it. Thank you Inna B for directing me here!!!

Cam and I went in here for the UYE on Sunday along with Marc M and Eugene and we had a great time! The prices were pretty good, and their new brunch menu had some really cool options with a little bit of something for everyone. We all split the deviled eggs with bacon which were awesome! Cam said mine are better but I might take a few of their ideas and incorporate them into my recipe... I had the provision omelet, which had bacon and cheese (I can't remember what kind!) and tomatoes and sprouts on top. It was pretty tasty, and for me it was the perfect size. All three of the boys ordered two dishes because the portion sizes are a bit small. We also ordered a carafe of mimosas. The service was great, and when we were done eating and closing out our bill, we continued to sit and chat for probably another hour and a half. The server was chill and just let us go for it. If it weren't Capitol Hill, I'd be back sooner! But I will make a trip down here for this one again. :D

I feel like I need this to go in 2 parts, but I'll start with the 2 star to make my point?.... #1. Just because you are a phenomenal bar tender does not mean that you will be a great waiter. #2. Again, just because you are a phenomenal bar, does not mean that you will be a great restauruant. We frequent Grim's in the night for their lovely cocktails, very thoughtful atmosphere, and let's face it, super hip new dance scene. Suffice it to say, I was very excited about the addition of a new BRUNCH spot on the hill, as I just can't go to Oddfellows EVERY weekend. Unfortunately the service was lacking, which started the whole experience down the drain. When our order was finally taken and the food came out, half of it was cold, and the other half was clearly microwaved. I'm sorry, but sausage, under no pretense should be placed anywhere near a microwave. The result was a dry, over cooked, angry molecule meat pile. Sad face. The crowning glorly, however, was the bloody mary. Like I said, these people know their booze. I would have had 3 if it weren't for the poor experience elsewhere... I guess I'll stick to the night life.

This review is just for brunch. The food would easily get 5 stars, at least the Eggs Benedict would. Lovely homemade Hollandaise sauce, eggs poached to perfection... mmmmm. Other items on the menu looked equally enticing. I didn't mind the unusual seating arrangement, but the stools did not look comfortable so I relaxed in one of the chairs by the window. Service could have been a little more attentive (and it wasn't very busy).

Love this place! The environment is so laid back and relaxing; the drinks come in little mason jars which are just so cute. I also heard there is a dance floor on the 2nd floor. There's not much of a wait staff; so just go up to the bar when you need something. We tried to order food, but couldn't get anybody's attention. (Thus, the minus star.) I wanted to try the pear cider, but they were out so I opted for the apple. SCRUMPTIOUS! I don't like alcohol very much, so this was perfect.

Recently I attended a little private event at Grims. What to focus on first in this mess. The walls are neat. The butterflies are neat. The mood upstairs is neat. The drinks are neat What the drinks are served in is stupid and not neat. The insane attempt at cool is obvious and unfocused. The seats. Lets talk about the seats. The seat I could see on paper seeming like a cool idea. They swivel out and are attached to the table. They don't lock in place they just keep swinging and swinging and swinging. Now introduce drunk people to the swiveling seats. I saw 2 people fall out of them and one was a waiter. I looked up from my tilted swivel seat to see Edison light bulbs, you know like a speak easy. I laughed. I laughed outloud. This place is silly. They should sell American appearal cowboy-steampunk hats made by Kathy Gifford and the theme would be complete. This place is not neat but it sure is trying to be.

My dinner here had its up and downs. So the up = most delicious bloody mary I've ever tasted. Was seriously good. I ordered the grilled cheese no. 1 with a tomato soup. The tomato soup was terrible. It was watered down and flavorless. I was tempted to dip my grilled cheese in my bloody mary. The grilled cheese was just okay. It tasted identical to the type I make at home. I assumed for the price they would have reinvented the grilled cheese or at least incorporated a creative spin on it. No surprises here. It was very standard. If I am in Seattle again, I doubt I'd give them another go. I enjoyed my meals at 22 and Coastal Kitchen much more.

Grim's: Weak Drinks for White People: Trust Fund Edition. Seriously, you can practically smell the market research wafting off the "distressed" walls and the communal tables. As a (very) white person who has yuppie dreams, this did not particularly bother me. As a (very) white person who does not have the attendant finances, though, the value did bother me. I am terribly fond of both swivelly stools and mason jars, but GOOD LORD YOU ARE A BAR SERVE ME A DRINK THAT HAS DISCERNIBLE BOOZE IN IT. My g&ts were essentially lime water. Not cool, Grim's. Not cool.

This review is geared more towards the upstairs butterfly lounge as we didn't spend much time in the main Grim's section downstairs. I had been wanting to check Grim's out for awhile now but kept missing various Yelp events here for various reasons. Finally, I came here with my sister to help celebrate the birthday of an awesome Yelper and found Grim's to be nice but nothing I would go out of my way to return to. The highlight of our visit was the food - I ordered the albacore melt and it was very rich but delicious and the side salad was pretty good too. It was a lot of food for one person so my sister and I split it and that helped the cost to be more reasonable. We also each had one drink - Summer Storm for me and Moscow Mule for her. They were interesting, but not that memorable. The butterfly lounge is a dark, intimate space with long benches and small round ottomans for sitting. It's charming, yet slightly awkward at the same time as it would be difficult to have multiple groups at each table and yet it's not really well set up to accommodate a large party either. We kept shifting tables and people around as our group increased in size. Also note that it doesn't open til 7pm and they don't accept reservations unless you book the entire lounge for a private event. The butterflies in jars are neat moreso than sad, and the ceiling tiles are very cool. Unfortunately the dim lighting + slightly loud music + slightly awkward layout made it difficult for me to hear conversations. Although the kitchen is downstairs, you place your order (food & drink) upstairs and the bartender was very nice and did a good job keeping track of everything. Then, staff from downstairs brings your food up the stairs, delivers it to the bartender, who then delivers it to you - seems a bit inefficient to me, but that's ok. All in all, Grim's is probably a 3.5 but since I don't see myself coming back unless a friend hosts a party here, I decided to round down.

Incredible decor. Went for brunch, thoroughly appreciated the $4 mimosas. Service a little slow, but when the kitchen messed up the order for the vegetarian in the group (giving her a bacon omelet) the restaurant was happy to not only replace quickly it but comp'ed her meal. We were happy to linger over drinks (including fabulous coffee). Next time we'll be ordering the carafe of mimosas ($14). I'm a fan.

Food review: we swung in during lunch/brunch. The prosciutto grilled cheese and tomato soup were great, way better than I expected a restaurant-turned-nightclub to have and I would go again.

This place is pretty cool, especially if you have a group that want's a bunch of different venues. The first floor is your standard Capitol Hill Bar. The second floor (the Butterfly Lounge) is smaller and more of a lounge style. The third floor is the dance floor and another bar there. Here are my issues though. 1. A three story bar has two unisex bathrooms for everyone. So be ready to hold it or just grab a drink and get in line and repeat. 2. The floor on the third floor (dance floor) constantly felt like it was about to give way. I didn't care but some of my group was weirded out by it. Overall I would go back but wouldn't wait in line to get in if there was one (one randomly kept forming then going away)

This place is actually one of the cooler bars out in CapHill. Why? 1) They serve you mixed drinks in honey jars or something, although I'm pretty sure we're getting skimped on the content with these things. 2) They have a cool yet extremely sauna-like dance floor upstairs. 3) Long tables are kinda communal so you get to talk to strangers. If that's your kinda thing. I've added this to one of the usual bar hop locations when I'm in the area.

i never visited the grey gallery but i don't think i would miss it with Grim's here, the place has a look that inspires you to enjoy the crafted drinks. the style is rustic and basic metal walls, recycled wood boards, filament light bulbs and a classy wall paper, also featuring community style benches with chairs that move around to save space. i only had two drinks which were the same, leather saddle,(rye and orange bitters) you can never go wrong with that combination, the music was great selection tom york style. come here fro some intoxicants and enjoy the place and company! ipb

Came here for brunch on a Sunday. There was good traffic in and out but the place was definitely not crowded. Friendly server who gave recommendations for drinks and menu items. We had some Bloody Mary's..highly recommend them! They are made really well! We all ordered different food including steak and eggs, French Dip, egg fritatta and Eggs Benedict. Portions weren't generous but really, it's just enough to make you full and not food coma. Everything was made well, warm and fresh. Highly recommend this place for brunch. If you don't live in Capitol Hill/Broadway area, good luck with parking. Even at 10am we couldn't find street parking and had to pay at a lot. If you're patient and want to circle 20 times you might be able to score a spot but give extra time to find parking. Good place. Good food. Good service. Prices range from $7-$12 for brunch items. Bloody Mary was as cheap as they get $7 for a generous pour complete with pickled veggie toppings!

I've only been here for brunch, which is quite good. I like that they serve eggs and potatoes and let you skip the toast. The music is usually very good. I'm probably not hip enough to go there on a Saturday night, but brunch doesn't seem to be only for hipsters.

Nutella Banana Panino with raspberry reduction. It is as good as it sounds. Our waiter was patient with my group, and even laughed at our stupid jokes. It has dim lights and fun seating. And your drinks come in Mason jars.

I went her with a Groupon, and I was not disappointed. It took three friends and several drinks to spend my 50 dollars and I quite happy at the end of it. They do nice cocktails, and their Tuna Melt sandwich was good and filling. The dark lighting leaves a bit to be desired, and the only light around was the street lights outside and the candles on the table. It was a bit too dark for me, but if that's your kinda thing, more power to you. I didn't go to the Butterfly Lounge, but maybe next time!

So like, I bought this book titled "Opening a Douchey New Bar -- Exploiting The Trends: The ins and outs of overtaking, gentrifying and homogenizing a neighborhood." I thought it would help us since our bar is opening soon. Really? Cool. So like one of the main points here is like, we have to like pick a theme right? 'Cause that's what'll give us personality. And it's that that sells. Not like quality or whatever. So we like need to pick something "new" that like people are going want to be a part of though they might not know what it is. Like a fashion... something visual you know, but also like something "cool" that they might have heard of once. It doesn't have to be that thing, like, authentic... just you know, like sort of maybe look like it. The books says that it could be something old that we're *re-introducting* as "new" to people that don't know any better....like drinks in mason jars. Speaking of...how about a SPEAKEASY? Speakeasies are like totally hot right now! Yeah, that really does fit on all counts, but like, ain't that done to death man... there've been a few of those opening in town. What if we serve like overpriced, you know, like southern, like, "trailer park food"... like be a dive but not a dive you know? Yeah, that's cool, but again, people might be, like, sick of that. Wait, I've got it. Have you heard about this thing called, like, "Steampunk". It's like the Renaisance Fair, but with, like, more leather and old timey vests and airman goggles and brass baubles and those, like, clock gears and shit. Clock gea...? Nevermind... sort of like Victorian, but you know, like, sluttier. You know like old Sherlock Holmes or mad scientist meets Mad Max with some makeup thrown in, like a little goth. I saw it some magazine or something, and there was, like, a convention in town recently. Seems pretty hot right now. Yeah, but the bar we've got going here isn't quite like that you know... it's more trendy, upscale but with, you know, the hiphop DJ thing people really like. Like, talk about done to death. Yeah, you're right, but this is, like, why we have to make it SEEM different.....hey, we do have some old wood stuff we're using... and like, some metal and some dead butterflies or some shit.... fuck it, let's call it Steampunk... I think you're totally onto something... we'll make it a little creepy seeming, like dark... you ever seen Silent Hill? Let's still keep the hiphop, house, DJ booth whatever though. Like the video game?... yeah that's a little Victorian-gothy huh? Ok. And, I know it's a bar, but, like, let's not focus on the drinks you know... none of that old timey shit; I want to make money hand over fist, not pay people to stand around squeezing juice and shit... fuck that; they're here for the Steampunk right? There here because we told them they need to be....experience this new trend we're telling them it is right? Like, the cutting edge or something. So, like, fuck it, plain bar drinks, but cocktail bar prices... They'll pay it. Because it'll be the only Steampunk bar in Seattle! Because it'll be the only Steampunk bar in Seattle! You think we should research this Steampunk thing; we don't wanna get called out? Ha! How many "Speakeasies" have opened in this city in past few years? Fuck no man, I saw some pictures in a magazine, I totally know what it's all about; we totally got this.

This place was located in the Capital Hill neighborhood. The storefront was a little difficult to find from the street if you're driving, so it's easier to park and walk to it. Once you walk in, the decor is very "industrial saloon", I guess? The more technical term, "steampunk". The tables were like long hearty wooden cafeteria tables with swing out stools connected to it. Very cool. The wait staff was very attentive and friendly. Great recommendations. Food was rustic and plated beautifully for just being french dip/salad, and a gourmet Grilled Cheese Paninis. I regret not ordering a cocktail beause I love the detail of the drink being served in mason jars. The food was reasonably priced at $8-10. Service was quick and effecient. My experience at Grim's was very enjoyable and plan to reserve the "Butterfly Room" upstairs for a private party in the future.

Great spot, drinks servered in glass mason jars, love it. The food was key and on point, the line outside around 9pm spoke of its true value to the area. Will come again early next time!

Great place but not good enough to make me a rabid fan. Drinks are okay, plenty of seating. Although the lighting is a bit odd and the drinks can be pricy for the quality you get. This is a good pick if you're going on any kind of pub crawl in Cap Hill as it never gets too busy.

This review is about the Butterfly Lounge. Location: 5 stars. Staff: 5 stars. Space: 4 stars. Drink prices: 3 stars. Air circulation: 0 stars. I have been to Grim's Butterfly Lounge for two private parties at two different times of the year, and both times - once in the winter and once in the summer - it must have been 110 degrees in there. They have like three puny fans mounted by the ceiling (when I say "puny," I mean about 4" in diameter) that do virtually nothing unless you stand in one of the two spots they happen to be barely hitting. Such a shame because nearly everything else about the place is perfect, and I would totally consider hosting a party here myself if they'd get the air circulation situation sorted. Also a SMALL glass of chardonnay ran me $7.50, which is okay at a sit down dinner but at a bar seems a bit much. Get the air moving up there, Grim's!

Three of the four people in our party had grilled cheeses and the other had a french dip - we all enjoyed our food. That was, of course, once the server actually came over and asked us what we wanted. Lord almighty it took her a long time to get over to us. Then, when she did come over to us, she had about as much personality as pill bottle. She never smiled. Then again, she didn't seem put off by us either - she was emotionless. Maybe she was a robot, I don't know, I'm just sayin'. The grilled cheese, though... DELICIOUS.

Three floors. Three personalities. Three stars. 1st floor: big room, industrial theme, communal tables good for mingling, very hipster friendly. 2nd floor: unique "butterfly lounge" as in bottles with butterflies in them all over the walls, tiny lounge area, room for maybe 15, however, easily there were 40 people crammed in here, not sure how lounge-vibe you can be with that many people and the music blaring. 3rd floor: after paying a nominal $3 cover to get to the 3rd floor, you enter bizarro land, as in completely different atmosphere than the first and second floor. Here is a raging club-like atmosphere with even louder music, a sea of people, and a dance floor that seems like at any moment it will cave in. Good place for a group of people with different nightlife tastes. I can't say anything about the food as I have only been here late night.

Friends and I went here drunk, had a friendly bartender (shout out to Troy!) make us drinks for 4.50 (!!!) and not make fun of/seem annoyed by our intoxicated state, always a plus! The area is nice and open, with lots of opportunity for socializing with other patrons...which WILL happen when everyone's havin' a good time at 1am! I'll for sure be returning!

One of those places you think is cool the first time you go and then you start to realize how annoying it is. The decor is kinda cool and the bartenders are pretty fast. They have a fake line outside that can take up to 30 minutes even when the bar is empty. Last time I went the bouncer told me that Washington passed a law requiring horizontal drivers licenses to serve alcohol. He let me in anyway, but that just isn't true. The line for the bathroom is usually enormous. It's actually sometimes faster to go outside and go to the bathroom in Purr than to wait on the bathroom line. The only time I've been all the way upstairs to The Woods the DJ was lame and the dance floor was dead. It's just a normal, plain, boring bar that acts like it's a fancy place.

The new bar has really a nice inside, beautiful finish and art. The second floor still smells fresh paint which is a little overwhelming. For the drinks, I try to order something on the menu and they don't have it... they just opened and don't have all the liquor to make the drink they propose ? Prices surprisingly don't include tax... it is rare to see a bar like this. Especially if you order at the bar directly. Plus, I don't like the bars when they take your change to be tip for granted... I don't feel like giving more when they do that; even if it's a quarter, you should give it back.

Stopped in on a Sunday at 7pm. Comfortable, noise level was average. Drinks were well made, creative, and stiff! Even better was the price. Did not partake in eating, but the food looked good. Bartenders were friendly and attentive. I had the Leather Saddle. I recommend stopping in!

What a great bar/restaurant! The downstairs has a vibe that is kind of like a mixture of Oddfellows and Smith. It has large, family style tables with big windows that look out onto 11th street. It is very relaxed and a chill vibe. Go upstairs and it is a cozy, dark area with large cushy chairs and wall seating with lots of pillows. Very cozy and jars with preserved, dead butterflies line the wall. (that sounds a bit morbid but it is actually very cool.) There was 12 of us and we kind of commandeered about a third of the upstairs area, so it is not a huge area but big enough to fit a good sized group. A couple of people in the group ordered sandwiches which they all said were very good. Both the drink menu and food menu have good selection of items to choose from and all the food I saw looked very good. I think my favorite thing about this bar is the you can choose what kind of mood you are in...the more chill, loud and open downstairs or cozy and dark upstairs. Very convenient when you aren't quite sure where to spend your evening. *if you go be sure to dress in layers. The upstairs is about 15 degrees warmer than downstairs and most of us got really hot.

Love me some Grim's I am hooked on their Black & Stormy's and Nutella/Banana Panini's they are dabomb.com !!!! It can get a little loud but overall its a sweet lil spot to get you eat, drink and chillaxin on.. Can't wait to hit it up next Sunday for the bar crawl, a worthy addition. oh and definitely gonna check out the Butterfly Lounge last few times I went, there was a private party.

This review is for the Butterfly lounge upstairs. Came here on a Friday night with a group of friends and it wasn't really my scene. Pounding trance beats blaring in a crowded sweat box isn't really what I expected from the chill atmosphere downstairs. I prefer a more eclectic mix of music (ie. with hip hop, new school, old school, etc) so it may just be my taste. Drinks came in a jar which was kinda cool, expect for the fact that the jars are tiny and the drinks had minimal alcohol in them. If you like trance and are just looking for somewhere to go wild, you might enjoy it here. Guys doing pull ups shirtless waiting in line for the bathroom may also do it for you, but not for me.... By the way, is it just me or is the floor in the Butterfly lounge about to collapse?

Though I will probably never be the Duchess *ahem Corey S.* , I definitely frequent Grim's...frequently. Why you ask? Mmmaybe it's the yummy leek/havarti grilled sammich. Or maybe it's the delicious Moscow Mule (a vodka cocktail, in case you didn't guess). It could be the fabulous crostinis (truly my fave) but the truth is... It's the folks. We've hung out here too long, spent too much money, and drank too much booze just shooting the shit with the fabulous staff. So there you have it. Go get yourself a mule already.

Atmosphere is great - dim lighting, rusty steel walls, and centerboards! I'm really looking forward to see what this place becomes. The upper level is incredible with the butterfies! Music was a nice backdrop to the space without dominating. Drinks are beyond competent; the drink specials were tasty, and Houston knows enough to do great things if you'd rather follow his lead. Food is tasty and reasonable - I had a very nice Frech Dip, followed by a tiny assortment of creme brule, apple & bread pudding.

One star for the food. The grilled cheese sandwich was tasty, but the salad greens were wilted and had bits of rotten vegetable goo stuck to them, and all of the soups were tepid when they arrived. Cold French onion soup is gross. Zero stars for our rude and inept server, who brought us the wrong order; got annoyed when we gently pointed this out; and re-served it to the adjacent table after curtly snipping at my friend, "Did you touch that sandwich? It was meant for that lady over there" (it was the same sandwich, she just screwed up the rest of the order and wanted to save face with the other table). She then ignored us for the remainder of the evening, except to reach over us for the tacky jar of cutlery sitting on our table. Don't plan on being able to hear your dining companions. The persistent thump of techno prevents audible dinner conversation. Wanna drink out of a mason jar in a darkish space with better food, ambiance, and service? Go to Kingfish.

I like the atmosphere - not too dark, not too bright. The service is good. I had the sausage and leek frittata which was just right since I didn't want a heavy breakfast - very tasty. My friend had the biscuits and grave which I tasted - very good. I'll definitely come back.

the lighting in the main room is nice. very high ceilings too. the upstairs area is nice also. butterflies all around. very cozy and warm when i was there and it was especially nice considering how cold it was outside. they have rainier on tap and that's good in my book. they serve all their drinks in jars it seems. an interesting twist. didn't get a chance to try the food. not sure if they have it all the time, but the night i went they had a bed sheet be the screen for a DLP projector showing interesting images. as with many joints in the neighborhood, parking is tough around there.

Ignoring the funky interior and unusual service, Grim's is simply a master of grilled breads. Their truffled leek grilled cheese tastes divine and the bread is perfectly toasted. The tomato soup, though too thick to drink, made a perfect dipping sauce. The Bangkok PB sandwich is weird but if you like Thai food you'll feel almost at home with this strange, wonderful sandwich which mixes peanuts, mint, cucumbers and marmalade. The grilled nutella and banana dessert was also wonderful and plated nicely, though nothing that couldn't be made at home. The service wasn't bad, but it felt strangely aloof. The interior is funky, though my dining companion found it comfy, I just found it strange. Later in the evening (10pm) the place started to get really loud, with more drinkers than diners. Their drinks are decent, favoring non-alcoholic flavors such as ginger, fruit, elder flower, etc. An interesting place to stop by for some distinct food.

If you go to Grim's make sure that you are going for a beverage experience ONLY. The food is depressingly underwhelming, and the service is lax and just rude. I ordered the burger and the waitress didn't even ask me how I wanted it cooked, apparently they just give it to you well done. It was so dry and under seasoned, I just wanted to cry, because I loves me my burgers. They don't call me BurgerMouth 'fo nothin! If you can't do a burger right, just don't do it. On the bright side, the decor is great. The Butterfly Lounge is the dimly lit second floor area, which gets an A+ for having dead butterflies on the wall, and The Woods is the third floor dancing area (where they play surprisingly good music). The drinks are simple, well executed, and made with high quality ingredients. And of course, the drinks are served in Mason Jars, which is always neat.

I went to Grims for a friends birthday in their beautiful Butterfly Lounge. This is a gorgeous venue for a small get together. The menu items change constantly is what I'm told, but while I was there I really REALLY enjoyed their macaroni and cheese. I also liked their ciabatta toasts with various spreads. I'm told they make their drinks well too. A fun place to hang out on the Hill with friends.

The Butterfly Lounge is gorgeous upstairs. Even if you're chilling downstairs, venture up and you'll be wow'd. It gets pretty warm up there, especially because it can hold so many people. Their drinks were good, the downstairs seemed pretty chill, and yeah - all in all it was a rousing good time. I shall return!

Decided to check their happy hour out with my boyfriend one night to see what the hype was about. While "steampunk" may be an overstatement the decor really was fantastic. The menu had a variety of fantastic looking items but I decided to go with one of the grilled cheese, the prosciutto one in particular (which was fantastic, but not filling!) My boyfriend got the french dip which was amazing! Prices are pretty average, but I don't think I would go if it wasn't happy hour. The upstairs lounge really was amazing with the butterflies, and comfy with lots of pillows. It really is like 15 degrees warmer up there though, which they were trying to remedy, with a small fan. Their take on the "Moscow Mule" cocktail was quite good and liberally poured. While this isn't a place I will be going to a lot (due to portions and prices), definitely a fun and different atmosphere with pretty delicious food.

I adore the interior here, very cute & spacious. I can see how this would be a great place to go for groups as it has communal tables set up with pull out swivel stools. The yummy bites we sampled was truffled leek cheese sandwich, tomato soup, and the honey (I think) walnut crostini. All were quite delish, unfortch, I didn't get to try any drinks but next time, I will. We got a peek at the Butterfly Lounge and it def looks cool! Service was good as well.

I love this bar! I've been here for brunch, dinner, and drinks - I'm always impressed by the food, beverages and level of service. I would highly recommend checking out the butterfly room!

I would have 4- or 5-starred this place but for a few things. First, the good: The drinks. Our group ordered some mixed drinks and the bartenders did a good job. Prices were what you'd expect. The atmosphere. Probably the main attraction, here. Wood everywhere, cool little touches like the card-catalog/post-box bar, the swivel out seats. The bad: 80s music was playing the entire time we were there. Not only annoying but anachronistic to the whole vibe the place was going for. Nothing says "vintage" like goddamn "Tainted Love"... The windows. The place has these great, huge, street-facing windows that could be cool if they looked out on to something nice, but as it is, they allow the orange light of a very efficient streetlight to flood in while competing with the soul sapping white fluorescent lights from a grocery store. Put some curtains on those windows at night or something. No crowd at all on a Tuesday night, which you can put in either the good or bad column, depending on your perspective. Didn't get any food, so can't say how the kitchen is.

This place was recommended to us by our waiter we had for dinner last Saturday night. We we're a group of 6 girls from Vancouver in our early 30's looking for a place to dance the night away....and this was definitely the right place!!!!! The music was insanely good, playing hits form the 90's....which totally brought us back to the good old days!! To be totally honest i wasn't concerned about how mucho drinks cost....it was all about how long can we stay on the dance floor. Well mission accomplished ...we lasted all night! If had to give you any lows it was that it got pretty packed in there and by the end of the night it was a slight challenge getting to the one and only bar to get, what is always a good idea "one more drink" ....this place looks like a pub from the out side but is 3 stories high...not sure what was on the second floor to be honest...but the top floor is we're it's at!! So in conclusion ....I will definitely be back here!!!!

I really wish there was a half star! This should be a 3.5 star review. We grabbed a few drinks with some new friends in the upstairs portion of the bar tonight. The bar is very visually stunning, the butterflies and stamped tin ceiling panels are a really nice touch. It's a bit loud and hot upstairs, but cozy and fun for a group. A few of us suggested moving downstairs to cooler quieter surroundings, but our group protested and felt quite satisfied in the warm cocoon of the upper level. The drink menu is alright. There are a handful of cocktails most fairly standard (a dark and stormy, a vodka drink with grapefruit and a handful of other things, a moscow mule, something with bourbon) mine was fairly well made (the citrusy vodka drink), but my husband's was a bit sweet and unbalanced (the something bourbon drink). The good thing is these drinks clock in at about $8-9, which is much cheaper than the going rate for a decent cocktail on the hill these days. So if you are going for the ambiance and friendship, this is your place, if you want to enjoy a really well made cocktail, you should spend the extra few bucks at Tavern Law.

lately, ive seen an increased manifestation of steampunk culture from the skits of portlandia to the streets of seattle. what's steampunk, you ask? think victorian aesthetic meets the city of lost children. with that said, i'm not exactly sure why grim's claims to be steampunk-inspired. i'd label the decor more reclaimed industrial, with pb elemental's signature touches of urban in-fill. the drink menu is adequate, featuring standards like the moscow mule, as well as some intermediate-level cocktails such a peruvian sour and my go-to cocktail, the blood and sand. everything's served in a mason jar, and while very 1858, gets in the way of a the perfect sip. this does however beg the question, "what's the chosen vessel of steampunks?"

I went here a week or so ago with a friend for a snack and a drink. I like how the space has been redone especially the upstairs it is beautiful with butterflies adorning the walls. My friend and I both had a drink and we ordered a sandwich. The food was really reasonable and delicious ( I think the sandwich was 7.50). I want to come back and sit upstairs with all the butterflies. This spot is totally worth checking out.

Cool urban space. Nice long community tables. Odd/awkward service. French dip, nothing to write home about. Tomato soup, downright foul. Tasted sour and almost as if they'd dumped a can of tomatoes and blended them into ragout with no seasoning or salt.

I've been to Grim's on several occasions now, during the week and on the weekends and feel like I have a decent sense of the space and patrons. The space is very warm and welcoming. I love meeting strangers, whether they want to meet me is debatable but Grim's open tables make it easy to meet new folks and eaves drop on your seat neighbor's work drama, love it! The butterfly lounge is interestingly cool and I not so secretly wish it could be transformed into a dark room for a sexy private party.... The drinks and service are always top notch, definitely a great addition to the hill and much better utilized in the space formerly known as Grey.

I dont really understand what the term Steam-Punk is but this place has a really nice ambience to it. Butterfly lounge is cool. Its dark and no to bright. A really nice place to go to with friends at night. I like how they give you drinks in jars and make it NOT ghetto. The drinks are good and i had a good pear cider here as well and and Food is pretty good. Above Average, and still tasty but nothing special. Good with drinks though!

if only there was something like this in SF.. affordable drinks in a very hipster fashion... This place has everything from a chill lounge area with cool tables to a dance floor (hip hop) I've never actually been to the other floor so cant speak much to it but all in all this is a great stop to make in Seattle.

The bread with the 3 kinds of infused butter (I think it was herb, leek, bacon) is a must try. Delicious. Steak was fantastic, perfectly medium rare, drinks were excellent. Service a bit slow but not horribly. The one big miss was the oatmeal creme brulee. We thought it'd be creme brulee atop a warm oatmeal cookie or something but it really was creme brulee atop unsweetened oatmeal. It was actually kind of gross. Not sure who tried that and thought it was a good idea to put it on the menu.

I love Grim's! My favorite place in Capitol Hill!! The ambiance is marvelous. You have 3 floors of unique fun atmosphere. The 1st floor with reclaimed materials, a very soft and inviting space. The 2nd floor butterfly room, filled with amazing brightly colored butterflies. (They're real and preserved in glass display jars). The 3rd floor is the woods, an outdoorsy feel, where you have the dance/club scene. I love the interior design of this place. Each floor has great music playing. ...and even when they're really busy, you can still get drinks or food without waiting forever. All the bartenders that I've met are super friendly and know their stuff. You could get really crafty with your drinks here and the bartenders would know what your talking about and make it taste great. It's a great place to hang out!

Love the Mac and cheese and grilled cheese sandwiches here. Plus a great place to hangout with your friends and great crowd. The vibe here is very welcoming and chill. The tableware is fun (jam jars used for drinks) and unique especially how the place is decorated. Tips: Only problem is parking sucks if you don't live around there.

We went there this past Saturday to go dancing. Yes, the dance floor is upstairs. The DJs they had were pretty decent. Played old school hip hop and R&B. The crowd was hipster/youngins and a good mix of everyone else. It got super crowded since the dance area is pretty small. You might have to wait in line though and there was cover. I don't think I have had to pay cover since.....I don't know when.

Bartenders and door people are not friendly (with the exception of one, slightly older door guy who's very personable. He's probably from, like, the midwest). The dance floor upstairs is going to collapse at some point. It moves nonstop under your feet.

this is a review of the bar atmosphere on a saturday night. wow... so how do you have the audacity to have the long lines with an empty bar like hollywood, but then suck inside? LOL anyways, my friends had friends inside, so we waited in line in the cold. once we got inside, it was empty. got to the bar, and the drink selection was pretty decent, but then looking around, it looked like i was at a slumber party where everyone just rolled out of bed and didnt realize they were in public. apparently there is a club like place upstairs for a fee, but judging by the looks of people heading up and down the stairs, it didnt seem worth it. we ended up leaving and going next door where there was no line and way more comfortable seating.

I had heard great things about Grim's. A first floor with reasonable, Oddfellows-ish bar ambiance. A second floor laden with dead-butterfly flavor. And a top floor with dancing all night long, supposedly among the better spots for a single person in Capitol Hill. Boy were they wrong. I walked upstairs with a group of ten friends, (eventually) ordered a pair of Gin & Tonics, and began to dance. About a half an hour later, someone bumped into me from behind, hard. I stepped backwards into where I had been dancing, and my shoulder contacted the person who had just bumped me over. I looked over to see who exactly I had been bumping into, and a shorter guy with dark hair looked back at me. He backpedaled towards me, and faced off with me. He said "What the fuck!?" I responded, "Excuse me, I think we bumped into one another. I'm sorry, can I speak to you for a minute about what just happened?" He grabbed me by the shoulders, attempted to throw me towards the stairs, told me I needed to leave, said, "Fuck you", and walked away from me. A minute later, he walked back up to me with two bouncers. They grabbed me by the shoulders and elbows and began to escort me towards the stairs. Two of my friends walked with me and asked the bouncers what was taking place. They responded that one of their bartenders (read: the dickish guy who had knocked me off-balance in the first place) reported that I was "causing a scene on the dance floor" and I needed to be removed from the premises. My friends and I attempted to speak with the bouncers, but they were adamant that they couldn't negotiate with people causing problems on the dance floor in front of their customers. They escorted me outside as I did not resist, but politely informed them that I would like my voice to be heard about this situation. Once I was outside of their bar, I was given a brief (read: fifteen seconds) chance to explain what had taken place. The bouncer said he would speak to said bartender (apparently named Matt; he needs to be FIRED) about the appropriate way to handle a disagreement with a customer. I said I would appreciate that and asked for an email address or phone number by which I could follow up. I was denied this opportunity. As my friends filtered out, informing the bar employees that they had lost thousands of dollars of business on a monthly (if not weekly) basis, I began to anticipate the fact that, in this day and age, a business can not treat a customer like crap and get away with it. While I enjoyed certain aspects of the ambiance, I would appreciate your support in boycotting this business until MATT IS FIRED. Thank you...

I must say that I'm shocked this establishment has any good reviews. Our experience was horrible to say the least. The service was horrendous, we ordered our drinks and waited a good ten minutes for them. Not fault to the bartender because I watched my beer sit in the service window while the waitress was on her personal cell phone texting! I couldn't believe it. The place wasn't even busy to excuse the bad service. We paid our server cash and started to order from the bar, but to my surprise the bartender was drunk. I could smell the jager on his breathe. WTF where am I??? Needless to say I will never go there again. It to bad that there website doesn't have an option to contact a manager, this probably happens more than they know. With that being said I did ask to talk to a manager and the intoxicated bartender said there wasn't one on yet. IT WAS A SATURDAY how is that possible? either way I'm done! Pro's the food was excellent!

This venue offers it all! Great place for dinner, dancing on the weekends or just lounging with friends over drinks. The food menu offers a gourmet comfort food selection from a leek grilled cheese sandwich to a scrumptious meat loaf with mashed potatoes. Great customer service adds to the experience especially that nice Kevin guy that works there. I recommend checking it out during the week first if you've never been when there is less of a crowd.

This place has the rudest staff I have ever encountered. I have been here 3 times and have had a similar situation each time. I will never go back again and I will be advising everyone I know to not frequent this place. The bar itself is nice, but what does that matter if the customer service is just shameful. There are plenty of other places that surround this bar that will pour you a better drink and treat you with some respect

I like this place quite a bit. The different kinds of grilled cheese thing is cool. The place is comfortable inside. (Unless you sit on these ridiculous bar stools that aren't actually at the bar. They're off at some side table near the bar.) Anyway, I'll be back! Oh, and nobody get the oatmeal creme brulee. It's kinda gross.

Okay so here are the two acceptable things about Grim's: the seating/ambiance is nice, and the drinks come in mason jars, which is a slightly cooler way to drink things I guess. Everything else: somewhere between meh and bad, veering towards bad. The wait was forever, which is fine if you're waiting on really good food. But you're not. The meat was way overdone and flavorless. The pork belly was 40% fat. The crostini seemed like a school snack. Go here for drinks, it's probably fine. Don't order food.

I usually don't succumb to melodramatic chatspeak but OMFG. Food orgasm by the truffled leek and havarti grilled cheese. So insanely good, it earned Grim's another star. The more I come here, the more I like it. And the drinks remain just on the right side of stiff.

I seriously felt more sexy walking in the doors than I did before. First off the decorum is rockin and obviously well thought out, even down to the encyclopedia covers for the menu. My wig was really blown off when I saw the room of butterflies and I was taken to a happy land of booze and whimsical memories. I had the french dip and it was a solid choice, super solid. Coffee is served in a french press and there is enough for 4 of your best, caffeine addicted, friends. The only bad thing, and yes there was only one was the seating at the bar. I'm a belly up and chat with my alcohol dealer, cuz they are rad, and those stools looked like they would hurt my heiny. Go here! A lot! Go here!

After the demise of Grey's Gallery, I was curious to see Grim's, which has been open a little over 3 weeks. The room, which had been divided into two spaces, is now one large space, with large communal tables instead of lounge seating. There is some heavy wood decor reminiscent of the back bar at Bastille, and the room is very dark. The good news is that Grim's is still a great place for drinks at a reasonable price, with many cocktails around $7, including a very decent Old Fashioned. They have a few beers on draft and bottles, and their drinks are all served in Mason jars. Definitely different, but as long as the volume is the same, who cares? There is a small menu of apps and sandwiches, but I didn't have a chance to try it this time around. Even after 3 weeks, Grim's felt like a place that has been around, and it will definitely become aregular stop of my Capitol Hill bar crawls!

So I saw that this place has been getting a little buzz, and decided to grab some friends and see what it's all about. Walking in I was impressed with the atmosphere. The walls were awesome reclaimed wood and steel, and the long communal cast iron and wood beer-hall style tables were pretty damn cool. The attached swinging stools made sitting still not very easy however, and I was wondering how I was going to stay on them after a few pints. Well no worries there, because not only are they short pouring on their mixed drinks, the fancy mason jars they serve their beer in aren't full pints. Sure, they're *metric* pints, but I really, really, REALLY should not have to explain to a supposed "beerhall style" bar the difference between metric and imperial pints. Nor should I be charged for a full pint when I'm getting shorted by half a cup of beer. Maybe if there were more than four taps with some choices beyond Lager, Lager, IPA, IPA I might be willing to pay full price for less beer. I barely glanced at the rest of the menu, mostly just noting a kind of uninspired salad/sandwich selection and some very basic mixed drinks. My friend opted for a basic whiskey coke, which was weak and probably poured from a jigger. Now that I'm done trashing the place, I feel it's still worth checking out. The atmosphere is amazing, and I think that it has a lot of potential, but I can't help but feel that the management is being too careful with the concept. I don't see much "steampunk" but I don't see much else. It's a rustic, and down-to-earth little bar that could be oh so wonderful, but so far the menu and drinks are uninspired. I'll see if it's still around in 6 months.

Came here for some late night drinks with friends. I loved the patio...perfect spot for people watching on a warm night! Once it got too chilly, we migrated to the Butterfly Room. A nice intimate space and the ideal date night atmosphere. The drinks were delicious and strong. I am sad to give this place 3 stars, but the service was the worst I've experienced in quite a while. It was a Saturday night, so I expected some lag in attentiveness, but the low level of attention we received was surprising. I'd like to give them another try for brunch sometime...hoping it was just a bad night!

I came here with friends after dinner during the week and I thought the decorations and mood of the place was great. I loved the water in the mini mason jars! In addition to beer I got the oatmeal creme brule, which was good, but because the oatmeal on the bottom was cold, it sort of threw off the desert. I would certainly come back for a relaxed few drinks!

If there's one place you should come to for grilled cheese sandwiches, it is here. I ordered the truffled leek and Havarti grilled cheese sandwich (THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD) and since that day, I've been looking for truffle grilled cheese recipes. Add a side of tomato soup and a local beer and that's what I call "hitting the spot".

The experience at Grim's has been getting better, slowly but surely. The first time my friends and I went here, we almost had to beg for our bill because they were so understaffed that they couldn't get anything done in any amount of time someone would consider "reasonable." Their drink selection is not bad, and I remember that they had a pretty decent selection of scotch and whiskey. One thing worth mentioning (and I'm not sure whether to consider this a pro or con at this point) as that Grim's is a three level complex - each being its own world. The first floor is the standard bar, where friends can actually have a conversation. The second floor is a private room, I think? I gathered that when the bouncer who seemed to be overdosed on adrenaline and tight shirts tried to stop me from getting in the door, even though I was actually headed to the third floor. Ass. The third floor might as well be somewhere in Pioneer Square, as it turns into this nutz dance floor that is packed wall to wall. It wasn't a horrible experience, but not necessarily something I was looking for. All in all, Grim's is a place that has something for almost every crowd. Worth checking out.

This is definitely one of the current hot spots in Seattle. Downstairs: long rows of shared tables. Good opportunities for socializing. Upstairs: LOVE the music; they play old-school jams ('80s/'90s, mostly hip hop, lots of loud singing along). I happen to remember all the white people screaming the theme song to "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" and thinking, hmm I don't know whether to love or hate this, and these people. So yeah, lots of dancing and another bar. Cool. OVERALL PROS: -Huge windows both up- and downstairs, for street/people-watching -Chances for socializing -Music OVERALL NEGS: -It's Capitol Hill, yes it's mostly hipsters. -Line out the door, so be ready to wait if you arrive after 10pm -We sat by the stairs and counted as we noticed a trend... how many guys here are wearing a plaid shirt? Well, turns out 3 out of 4 men! Almost every single guy. It turned into a game - if a guy wasn't wearing the "Dress Code", whooooo! --a "Whoo girl"

We waited for 40 minutes after placing our brunch order and asked the waiter what was happening to our order. He asked if there was anywhere else we had to be and why we couldn't wait. Clearly the restaurant was crowded and orders were going to take a while, but a little courtesy and apology for the delay would've gone a long way. We walked out after an hour of waiting. The waiter got our drinks though. I used to love their brunch, now I'll have to think twice before going back.

Probably my favorite bar on the Hill. I have been in there a couple times when the bar was closing and the bartender let me stay late while he cleaned up the place before asking us nicely to leave. Plus they serve Ginger Beer which is my favorite! Grims is probably the most unique bare on the Hill because of it's Butterfly room on the second level and up one more level is a giant dance floor with really good DJ music. Muchhhh better than Moe Bar's DJ set up because there is more space, enough people, and you don't feel like you're going to die of heat stroke, breaking to get air every 10 minutes.

My favorite bar on Capitol Hill. I love the look and feel, kind of steam punk and slightly gothic, Kasey and Colton are amazing bartenders. I highly recommend happy hour upstairs in their butterfly lounge and the French dip is to die for.

I am too old to do anymore bar hopping so when I do get invited for a chance to visit the Capital Hill bar scene, I don't mind giving it a go once in awhile. Grim's is more of a restaurant / bar than a nightclub for dancing even though music is played throughout the establishment. When our group reserved The Butterfly Lounge upstairs for a party it wasn't very large to accommodate all the people and seating was tight. I liked the fact that we had our own privacy as a group even though it wasn't an exclusive room just to ourselves as other people can just walk in or out if they choose. It was good though that we had our own bartender to fill all the drink needs instead of going downstairs to the main lower level. What made it even better was the bartender gave me a discount on my drink I ordered since it wasn't available when I first got there and he remembered me! I didn't have a chance to try any of their food, but from what I saw what others were eating it looked pretty decent. The staff was quick in bringing people their food once it was ordered and they were very busy filing all the orders. Good place to have a drink and to have a good time socializing.

I go here often when I'm in town. The vibe is pretty chill, a little loud. Love, love the moscow mules here. I know they're kinda into the whole mason jar thing, but I had no idea that they serve shots in itty bitty mason jars as well. Super cute! I haven't' gone upstairs yet so can't say much about that. Love the cafeteria style seatings. Overall, very hip and urban.

I had the best pork belly I've ever experienced in my life at Grim's. Seriously. Every bite melted in my mouth. My date, who is not a fan of pork, fought me over the last forkful. They also have some very interesting (but delicious) sandwiches, like peanut butter cucumber. The seating, as mentioned in other reviews, is uncomfortable especially if you have a bony butt. But that's all I can complain about. Go for the pork belly. Oh lord, the pork belly....

Fuck this piece of shit bar and this piece of shit bouncer who let people not even in line in. We were in line for 40 minutes (and near the front) and still unable to get in. Don't go to Grims they don't care about you. I asked the bartender what was up with him (after we decided enough was enough) and this is literally what he said, "Do you know the bouncer? Oh, well welcome to Saturday night." I'm guessing this guy is a true representation of Grims. I will never be back and I suggest you don't go either.

Saturday Night--yes a busy busy time but for bars but the service I experienced at Grim's last weekend was unacceptable. I came in after a poetry reading next door at Vermillion at sat down to find my friends already enjoying drinks via a cocktail server. They recommended I wait for her to come around again...which she didn't. Then, I decided to go up to the bar. After trying to get the attention of one of the three people behind the bar, I finally managed to ask for a cocktail menu. This proved impossible. One person vaguely looked and then literally just ignored me. The other two pretended to not notice. So I wandered back to the front of the restaurant and found one myself tucked away on a shelf. Classy. I ordered a specialty cocktail from the menu consisting of gin, lemon juice, and Crème de Violette which tasted medicinal at best. It arrived with NO garnish, which made it look like a glass of grey dishwater. None of my friends would try it and I honestly struggled to drink it. Normally I love Crème de Violette drinks but it needs to be balanced! My final complaint is that I paid with a $10 bill for what turned out to be about $8.50 cocktail after tax. I went to the bathroom and returned to two quarters strewn across the table. My friends said the server came by and picked up the 10, brought $1.50 change and left...only to come back a minute later and snatch up the dollar bill. I had planned to give him the whole $1.50 as tip but god that just seemed a bit tacky. I'm not Seattle based by having travelled extensively and reviewed bars in NYC, LA, and San Francisco, this experience was a real shame. This place is earning my first one-star review for literally no redeeming qualities.

Fantastic happy hour grilled cheese and Moscow mules. Dinner and a couple drinks, $10. Friendly staff, good food, good prices. Check it out!

I have only been here a few times, but its always good. I like personal getting there early for happy hour, before ti crowded. I love the crunches that you can get to eat. I recommend the hummus, and grille onions. Lots of great drinks and beer on tap. I love that everything in served in mason jars. If you get a chance try an sneak a peak in the butterfly room upstairs. Its so cool! I would love to rent it out sometimes for a private event.

I've been here a few times and the crowd has seemed oddly corporate - like you are drinking at a bar near the convention center. The menu is great for lunch, but the service is a little confused and less than knowledgeable. The main downstairs room is well designed and attractive. The upstairs seems like a good concept with mixed results - the butterflies are great, but then there are the weird looking hotel lobby chairs that take me back to the convention center reference. Seems like a good place for a happy hour snack, once they iron out some of the service & food prep kinks.

Very comfortable laid back environment. Great place to come and the upstairs butterfly room is amazing!

Grim's is a very unique place that defies being tagged with a single definition. It is more than just a great bar for socializing, more than just a restaurant with a menu full of delicious dishes, and more than just a nightclub where you can dance the night away. Grim's/The Butterfly Lounge/The Woods is a combination of all of these things and they do all of it very well. The staff here is very helpful, always accommodating, and does it all in a friendly manner that makes you want to keep coming back for more. If you are here for food, I would highly recommend starting your tour of their menu with a selection of their amazing grilled cheese sandwiches or going straight for their famous french dip. Grim's also offers a weekend brunch menu that offers really good variations on all the classic breakfast plates along with some unique creations of their own. The atmosphere on the main floor is wide open and welcoming with a rustic and highly stylized decor and communal table style seating which is intended to keep the social vibe in place. Located on the second floor, The Butterfly Lounge is a more dark and intimate setting with small tables surrounded by benches along the walls and small and plush stools that can be moved around to fit the size of your group. The Woods has its own Yelp page so check that out to see my review on there for more detail, but essentially, this is a dance floor with a DJ booth and a bar and is perfectly simple for what it is trying to be.

Grim's is always a fun spot to run to when I am on my weekend capital hill bar hop. Always the tastiest drinks and the laid back lower room and chilled out butterfly room. On some days they will have their dance floor cracking up stairs. This however will cost you 10 bucks. The food is pretty good and well priced. The main thing that i get there is the Moscow mule. This is the place where they make the best ones! Overall good experience. But do not expect to get in right away on late night. LINES ARE LONG

Recently in the news it was revealed a man was attacked by three other customers in Grim's, breaking his jaw and requiring serious surgery after Grim's bouncers hauled him outside and let him continue to be attacked on the sidewalk, without making an effort to stop it or call police. Grim's management also allegedly let their video surveillance footage get erased. Obviously dumb drunk fights on the hill are not their fault, but bouncers who don't assist and management who erases video footage is their responsibility and makes me feel this is not a safe place to go any longer. I don't know if the CHS story is 100% accurate, but Grim's hasn't publicly responded so unless they do so we have to accept it at face value.

Prices are decent, but my expectations end up higher than what is delivered. We had the pork belly that people have raved about. The portion size is fantastic for the price, but it was really bland. The Grilled Cheese No. 3 was about the same. I didn't taste much truffle flavor, and leeks and havarti on their own are pretty plain. Haven't tried going upstairs, but at this point I'm more inclined to go to Tavern Law instead.

I've been waiting a long time to write a proper review for Grim's, because in my bar-going experience this place truly stands out as one of the greats; even amongst the other strong contenders in Capitol Hill. My second weekend ever living in the city, I came to Grim's for dinner early on a rainy winter evening because we had heard how good their grilled cheese sandwiches were. They did not disappoint! We had finished our sandwiches and a couple of drinks, when we noticed they were just opening an upstairs area. All of us were in "explore" mode so we decided to scope out the upstairs, otherwise known as The Butterfly Lounge. Little did I know I would be hosting my birthday party there just eight months later. The walls in this lounge are lined with butterflies set in backlit mason jars perched on inset alcoves, the walls and floor are black, and the ceiling is a golden tin stamped with an intriguing pattern. It's laid out long and narrow, with reclaimed pillows and tables lining the walls. At the other end of the benches is the bar, where Caleb makes the BEST drinks. Seriously. Best. Bartender. EVER. He has lined the walls of his bar (he is the only bartender that works the lounge, it's only open Thursday - Saturday nights) with all kinds of crazy bitters. He makes great drinks like a Blood & Sand or a Moscow Mule, but he is the kind of bartender who loves a challenge. Tell him what you like in a drink (a type of booze, a flavor profile, a fruit, etc), and he will make you something that is one-of-a-kind and truly exceptional. I brag about his skills to all of my friends until they finally come with me to visit the lounge, and every single one has sang his praises back to me. I get kinda smug about it, because I know he rocks! My birthday party (about 60 guests) went off without a hitch, and I can't imagine a better guy to have behind the bar. One of my most memorable birthdays, no doubt. We had the lounge reserved from 7-10, and we got to play music from my iPod the whole time. The food was incredible, I had the short ribs but tried everything from the chicken to the mac and cheese (benefit of being the birthday boy). Bonus if you rent out the lounge: you and your guests get to go upstairs to The Woods (dance club) for a lump sum of $150! Normally $5/person. The Woods on my birthday was a great time! Timing was a key factor here, we rented The Butterfly Lounge from 7-10 and The Woods opened at 10, so for a while it was just my friends up on the dance floor... felt like a VIP! All in all, this place is fantastic and you can truly spend an entire evening under one roof and have three entirely separate but equally awesome experiences. Every time I come to any one of the three venues hosted under the "Grim's" name, it's always great. Strongly recommend!

Went to Grim's for a birthday on a Friday night and waited in line for about 10 minutes. At 11, the place wasn't incredibly packed. I didn't stay too much downstairs but the space looked promising with the assortment of tables, smaller chairs, and standing counters. The upstairs also has a bar and dancefloor. The music played throughout the night was a nice mix of stuff, if not a bit dated. The DJ wasn't the greatest and would suddenly change songs. The crowd was interesting. Not sure how I feel about Grims but I'm willing to come back a couple times to give it a chance. It was cute that the drinks are served in mason jars. Prices are pretty standard but were light on the alcohol.

Grim's is the perfect all-in-one place: good eats, strong drinks, dancing til dawn (or at least last call). Eats: The grilled cheeses (3 options!) are no joke. I've all had 3 and I must say that they're really the perfect solution to help curb that drunkenness. #3 will forever be my go-to. I recently tried the Pork Belly with apricots and damn, so tasty. Super tender pork with a crispy outside and the apricot is so weird, but good! The arugula salad was a great combination to keep my meal fresh and not too overwhelmingly heavy. I've had brunch here once...I just remember that the portions were smaller than normal, but super cheap. Must've been that strong bloody mary that I had... Drinks: My go-to drink is always tequila-based...so the mexican mule and me get along great! I've heard that the Dark and Stormy is a popular one. Dancing: The Woods (3rd floor) can be extremely sweaty, but I love their 90's nights. Always playing a great mix of music, $5 cover, and bar upstairs. I've seen a couple fights up here, but I'm okay with that from a safe distance :). The main floor can get a bit crowded as the night goes on, but they do take dinner reservations for large parties (or not so large parties). I love the swivel-seats and comfy lounge chairs--makes for a easily socializing time. :) Bartenders and servers are super helpful and fun too! Definitely a place to visit if you haven't already!

Grim's had an extremely long line for a late saturday night, but it was good once we got inside. The girls inside were a little ratchet but there were a lot of hotties. Its probably not a place for everybody, but if you're single and like to dance it's a good place to party. I may return again tonight.

Happy New Year everyone! 3.5 stars I have mixed feelings about arguably the current hottest bar in the hottest neighborhood in Seattle so let's do the good ole' pros and cons list: Pros: -Cool decor on 1st floor-love the keyhole wall and the rustic feel-very "in" right now +1 -Butterfly lounge- that gets a separate mention on decor in and of itself. Plus I loved how it was small, dark, homey. If it wasn't as crowded, it would make a cute date spot. +5 because the butterflies in the jars are just THAT cool -Mason jars hold your drinks. Way to cash in on a hot new trend. +1 -It's hot and popular right now so if you want to seem cool, come here +1 -Bartenders were cool +5 Cons: -It's hot and popular right now so if you want to wait in a long line, come here -2 -Once you get in, you have to wait in yet ANOTHER line. There's technically two bathrooms, but one was closed for some reason everyone had to wait in line for ONE bathroom. Mixed gender which I am def not a fan of. The line to the bathroom takes up a good bit of the bar so what does that tell you? -10 +13 -12 Total: 1 Wow Grim's you just eeked through to a positive score didn't you? I guess that means I'll bump this review to a 4.

We stopped here on our way to Poquitos- made fantastic travel time to Seattle from Woodinville. We had heard that the old fashioned's were amaze-balls and wanted to grab a HH drink before dinner. We were parched from a long day of wine tasting and the service was amaze-balls. We all got water and a cocktail- all delish and the prices were amaze-balls. Such pretty little drinks, and they tasted good. I again, only had water, but it was delish. service was fantastic. We were enjoying the beautiful space when a bunch of already drunk (at 6 pm) birthday party gals also came in. There looked to be trouble but alas it was cool like a cucumber. We asked to see the butterfly lounge and he happily showed us upstairs, it was beautiful and if I didn't live in Maple Valley then that is where I want my next Birthday party. I don't know if I'm hip enough for a place like that but certainly I appreciated the effort put into the space. Katy H's review details the space perfectly. I don't go out much these days but it's nice to know that bars/clubs/ etc are stepping up their spaces from dingy to interesting. Of note: we had dinner reservations at Poquitos and after dinner we walked by and the place was a zoo. I would encourage everyone to stop by for HH and enjoy the outside area and the calm beautiful space that they have created. Cheers!!

Really good food. I loved the different kinds of grilled cheese. And the prices were completely reasonable. Service was good. We went on a Saturday night so they were pretty packed. Our waitress was curt but efficient. The decor was amazing. Hipster, but funky too. The only thing about the decor that I did not like were the chairs at the big tables. Very uncomfortable.

My chicken masala breast was raw - bright pink inside that is unnnnnacceptable. Wasn't what I thought it would be, pretty underwhelming and the flavour was lacking. Never got a refill of water. Not planning to return nor would I recommend this place unless it was for alcohol.

Worst bouncer in the world! So. I'm too drunk too get in but I'm not too drunk to leave a review? I'm not sure if this is racism or what but I gave him the benefit of the doubt and waited in line, COMPLETELY sober because I understand that bars have a responsibility, but when he STILL wouldn't let me in after waiting in line COMPLETELY sober, my alcohol warmth was gone and I had to leave a review. Good luck if you use reason, because once the bouncer judges you, it's definitive. Congrats on hiring people based on weight, I'm sure this guy could protect you from anyone who can't run 3 yards to outreach his racism. /sarcasm

I was drawn to Grim's because they open pretty early and I was in the mood for a beverage. Pretty cool industrial feel inside, and I hear the upstairs is equally pleasant. I was the only person at the bar and received my drink quickly. It was rather small and average tasting, and the price was on point with Capitol Hill. I'll have to visit when the place is more lively, but with so many other options in the area, nothing about Grim's really stood out.

Grilled Cheese Sandwich WIN! The meat plate was pretty good. I enjoyed the prosciutto and grape slices the best, and the greens that came with the sandwiches were exactly the kind of leafy greens I craved to fulfill my leafy green needs. The waitress was great and even kept track of our orders as individuals so it would be easy to split the bill at the end.... but all that *really* mattered were those grilled cheese sandwiches. Since we had a big group, one of the Yelpers had the amazing idea of ordering two of each option (there are three) and asking them to cut each sandwich into four pieces. So perfect! I'm not sure which sandwich was which, but they were all incredibly flavorful and fabulous. They were NOT standard run-of-the-mill grilled cheese sandwiches. Their use of good/interesting ingredients (Gruyere cheese, basil, prosciutto, truffled leek, etc) really made the sandwiches special. Thank you to the people of Grim's! The only downside? They were out of the beef tartare that I was hoping to try. Hope they have it next time!

This place used to be THE place on Fri/Sat nights. Now it's an overcrowded, overrated mess. The bartenders are totally amateur and need serious attitude adjustments. I've witnessed them treating customer poorly and it ruins the atmosphere. There isn't much to this place except for the space (PS- Von Trapps has plenty of space, so does Barca-both of those places have quality staff). There are a lot of places in Capitol Hill...really, no need to sell yourself short and come here to get treated like crap while spending money...

Came here on a late Tuesday night for a date. It was pretty quiet but the staff was friendly and attentive. The mason jars are a cool rustic idea to serve drinks in. Per other reviews we only made it to the first floor. We may need to go back and explore the other two levels. But had a good experience for the time I was there.

Line: Way too long. Food: OK. Best thing I had was the pork belly (the boys loved this). The cured meats plate - eh. Cheese bread - came out really late, didn't eat. Service: Terrible. *NOTE: They stop serving at midnight. I got in just before (before 11:30pm) after waiting in a super long line, and couldn't find a waitress for about 15 minutes... not a one in sight. A friend finally found a waitress and we ordered food. Food took over 45 minutes to come out. And at that point, I didn't get all of my items. The waitress or "cook" forgot to put in the order for the cheese bread (makes no sense why it was ordered separate from all other items). Close to 1am, still no cheese bread. When I asked the waitress, NO APOLOGY. I talk to the cook, NO APOLOGY. All avoidance of any wrongdoing. This is the cardinal sin of restaurant service, imo. I get mistakes are made, we're human. I've worked in a restaurant before, I get it. But not admitting you forgot to do something? NOT acceptable and extremely infuriating. Will not be back any time soon.

This review is for the food & drinks downstairs, not for late night or the upstairs lounge area. Came here last Saturday around 7, the grilled cheese sandwiches are amazing! The tomato soup is the perfect side dish on a cold day, so comforting. Great price for the portion too! Love the atmosphere, great bar, friendly servers, would love to come back for late night drinks when there is a DJ upstairs.

We were in a rush for dinner and didn't know where to go. After wandering a couple blocks, I saw Grim's and headed over. The space is open with long tables and swivel chairs connected in pairs. It's neat. The vibe was super chill, relaxed. We were immediately given iced water (so appreciated cuz it was one of those warm evenings in Seattle) and menus. Shortly after our server came by and we asked her if it was possible to be out of here in 30mins (as we had a SIFF to catch). She said they could do it. We both ordered their "blue" burger, medium. The hub asked for some truffle oil on his (the oil was listed on another menu item). After several minutes, our burgers came out. They looked delicious and came w/ a side salad instead of the usual fries. I was kind of missing the fries especially after seeing the burger did not have any greens in it. I put my salad in there, channeling a Man v Food moment (speed challenge, rar!). While we were shoveling, our waitress came by with the check, we slipped our card in, and she swept by to grab it. It was all very seamless and I appreciated her continued diligence that we were in a hurry. The burger bun was very interesting..it was more bread than bun, and was toasted. It held up the heavy beef patty and the generous sprinkle of bleu cheese and caramelized onions. The chipotle mayo was a little lost in the bleu cheese but it also wasn't crazily over-applied, which I prefer since I generally ask for no mayo. The hub said he could tell his has truffle oil (70c surcharge). The balsamic on the salad was tasty and went well with/in our burgers. Of course I felt awful for being so rush-y, but the experience was good enough where I definitely want to linger next time..try a drink, or their mac and cheese, and maybe head upstairs if I'm cool enough.

Saw some pretty good Yelp reviews so we tried it out this past Sunday around 2pm for a late brunch. We went with another couple and our two daughters who are 10 and 12. It looks like a bar, but they do take minors. Long communal tables with attached slide out stools. Cool vibe, loud music, fun place to hang out. The food was really good but the only downside was that it took forever to get our food. There was a large table ahead of us and I think they only had one or two guys cooking. But the waiter comped us a couple of beers because of the wait. I had the French Dip and it was very salty but VERY good. Eggs Benedict was great, Walnut Waffle my daughter got was fantastic. Altogether a very enjoyable experience. The house bloody mary is spicy and good. Would not be good for younger children.

We booked a private party in the Butterfly Lounge upstairs. We had a private bar, lots of delicious food, and an intimate setting for our family and friends to meet and mingle for our pre-wedding happy hour. The room is a little bit dark and slightly cramped but it didn't inhibit our party from having a great time. We chose Grim's on a friends recommendation and were very pleased. My guests were complimenting me for days! The drinks were delicious and well poured. the selection of croustinis were delicious and were constantly refilled by the waitstaff. And the atmosphere was beautiful. I absolutely recommend Grim's for small and large parties.

I was at Grim's for a friend's birthday bash in on a weekend night. The place itself was lively. The seating there were communal tables so you could talk to the party seated next to yours if you wanted (looks like a place where you just grab your own table sort of place). Although the food was good (I had pork belly, which was small size enough...since I wasn't that hungery. The meat tasted nice and tender), the place was popular and more people seemed to be ok with waiting in longer and longer line further into the night, I found the service very subpar. There were about 8-10 people in my party. The waiter didn't remember the food that everyoone ordered. They apparently "ran out" of my first choices of food at 8pm...it wasn't even late into the night yet (hey, the food was on the menu and the menu wasn't that extensive either). I was the person who arrived the latest in my group and ended up ordering my food and drink separately from the whole big group (since everyone already ordered). Yet, my food came out earlier than some other people's food. Worse, one person in my party ordered a hamburger. The waiter actually got it wrong and ordered a chicken for her instead. When everyone's food was out except the hamburger, the waiter just asked my friend to eat a roasted chicken dish that the waiter apparently got it mixed up instead....umm...hello?!?!..at the end, though, my friend never got the hamburger she ordered... Overall, it's a lively place and fun place to meet up...way too chaotic and too crowded on the weekend though. And with such subpar service, I think I could find a similar place with much better service on Capitol Hill elsewhere.

No, not, Je Ne Sais Quoi: French 75! Ambience: 5 Food: 5 Value: 3 A friend of mine threw her birthday party at this place. She reserved the private 'butterfly room' upstairs for the event. It was freaking awesome! The butterfly room is a low metal stamped tiled ceiling, intimate place with shadowy-lit jars of butterfly adorning the walls. You have you own bar at the end of a hall-ish path. It's just beautiful. The drinks were good. Nice crafted specialty drinks, along the lines of speak-easys, do not disappoint. The kick has got to be the French 75: the combination was said to have such a kick that it felt like being shelled with the powerful French 75mm howitzer artillery piece, called "Soixante Quinze" in French. Tre Bien Their food was pretty tasty too. Truffle cheese melt... yum...

Breakfast was very underwhelming. Eggs Benedict was very bland, the hollandaise ('in-house') had no flavor, the English muffins were stale, grits were unimpressive, and the biscuits and gravy was certainly nothing to write home about. On a positive note, the coffee was fine. Recommend avoiding this for breakfast.

The French Dip and even the little salad that came with was devine. Didn't try anything else and was famished so hence 4 instead of 5 stars. I could do with another one right now. My friend who is overweight and more schooled in the French Dip experience also thought it was pretty darn good. Give it a try (we drank water and kept our drinking to Barca next door).

I've been to Grim's 2 times this month. Both on thursdays for their new Timewarp Night (80s/ 90s/ goth) that happens on the 3rd floor in The Woods (the name for the upper room). I got there a bit early and hung out w/ friends on the 1st floor. I like the decore and tall celings. Their benches w/ swing out seats are a bit scary. If you had a few too many, i could see someone falling off their seat, lol. Their mason jar glasses are a bit cute, a bit kitschy. My ONE beef with their staff is I always get stuck with this one bartender. I wish i got his name. He's a bit short, dark spikey hair, tan. He pours horribly! I think I remember asking for booze in my drink, not just juice. He bartended the1st night of Grims, then was on the main floor the 2nd week and i got crappy drinks from him both times! grr. However, the cuter bartender on the upper floor knew what he was doing! The middle floor is pretty cool. Darkly light, mirrored ceilings, butterflys in jars. It would be nice for a private party, if you're looking for a small space. One warning: Their stairs are a bit scary too. There is a hand rail onthe wall in the 1st set, but not on the 2nd. It's hard to have a goth night and wear big heels or boots with so many stairs invovled. I'm curious to see if any more themed nights come around

Visited Grim's with a gilt city deal (I think... may have been amazon or bloomspot) on a Tuesday evening with a friend. The deal was $40 worth of food for $20. The menu is pretty limited here for food, with lots of options for drinks. Think comfort food that is done a little on the fancy side. Grilled cheeses of many varieties haha. Drinks first... hard cider and moscow mule. This restaurant is neat... feels old school. It screams hipster though. Lots of long tables for large parties, with small, low, round tables for smaller groups. I found the small tables super awkward, but I am six feet tall... too low for me. On to food: I went with the spicy albacore tuna melt with a salad at the server's recommendation, while my friend went with the grilled cheese #1: Tomato, Basil, Prosciutto and Gruyere Cheese plus tomato soup for an added charge. For apps we decided on the prosciutto crostini and artichoke dip. Food arrived fairly quickly. Apps were okay but mostly went uneaten... so not really impressive. Liked my tuna melt but it was not really spicy as advertised. Grilled cheese was well received. Drinks were good, but serving sizes on them are pretty small. Since I had the deal, my total was only about $5 for the tip. $25 (deal price and tip) is great for all of the above, but I wouldn't be happy if I had paid full price.

I think the layout of the place is great having three floors with bar, lounge area, and dance club up top, so you can start off in more a quiet area to drink and talk before deciding to go to the dance section. I was not in love with the music choice at the dancing section, but that could have been just the particular night I was there (Friday night).

There is a line to get in here. Not sure why. The bouncers are cool. I would opt to stay downstairs in the lounge and avoid the 5 dollar cover to go upstairs. It's hot up there with only 1 fan and 2 windows open. Feels like a steam room. It's to crowded. The bartenders are over worked. The sound system and DJs are good. Drink prices are normal about 5 dollars. I would go elsewhere though.

Well I need to be honest, my experience here was the equivalent of being spanked with a barbed tuna fish on the bare stomach by a distraught fisherman. Well...the Brazilian wax i had just got done on my upper half 2 hours earlier might have had something to do with that. Anyways, Theodore and I had to stand in line with a bunch of half naked women and their macho man randy savage boyfriends (all of which must have had an IQ less than 50) for over a hour just to get in. Then once I got to the entrance the bloated bouncer boy shunned Theodore and turned us away. I had to walk poor Theodore all the way back to our mansion on aloha street. When I returned, I got back in line and waited for another hour or so, they let me in and I went straight to the bar line.. WHAT IS THIS PLACE? DISNEYLAND? There is no reason why I should have to wait in line for a half hour for a poop ass flavored gin and tonic!! After which I stood in a sweaty horde of Barbie dolls grinding their buttocks up against their neanderthal cave boys too a poorly written song about happiness. I sucked down my drink and ran full speed out the door to vermillion.....I need to take a shower....have a great day.

Grabbed drinks here with friends a few weeks ago and enjoyed it! Large space, industrial style decor, different seating arrangements. Not necessarily a fancy place, but a good spot to stop by for a quick, strong drink or some food. We didn't try any food but the menu looked good. There's also a lounge/dance club upstairs that we didn't visit.

Their cocktails are probably my favourite in Seattle so far. The Mexican Mule and their take on French '75 are great. Yum. I'm usually upstairs in the butterfly room, because I find it a little easier to get to the bartender up there. I like the ambiance up there, though at times it can get extremely crowded. Downstairs is more open and less intimate, but it's a cool space anyway. I'm not a huge fan of the school cafeteria style of the seating, so I tend to stick to the tables at the window if I can. I haven't tried the food yet, but I want to soon! The bouncer is kind of a no-nonsense type of person. There were a lot of stupid people making his job shitty just because they had to wait in line. We're all grown ups, guys. Just shut up and wait. So, it sucks, but on a busy night, you're probably going to have to wait in line if you decide to leave the bar for whatever reason. All in all, this is a cool place, especially on a weeknight! I deduct a star for two reasons: the no re-entry thing. I mean, I'm patient and I can wait, but it really doesn't make all that much sense that you have to wait if you leave. There's no ATM in that place, so if you want to go up to The Woods, and you don't have cash you're stuck. Or, you'll have to send the sweetest, most memorable-looking person out in your group with the hopes that she can slip by the bouncer with a please and thank you. Second reason is because I actually am terrified, likely illogically, that the floor from the club upstairs will cave in and kill me one day. But at least I'd go out with friends with an excellent drink in my hand.

I went to Grim's on New Year's, and it was fun, but there were enough drawbacks to make me want to leave. First, Grim's isn't the best name; it kind of put me off at first when my friends mentioned it, but bars have weird names, so whatever. It had a ridiculously long line, which was somewhat redeeming, making me think that this place was really trendy and must be a lot of fun inside, and also that I better have a great time after waiting in the cold for so long. The bouncer was letting 6 people in at a time, every 15 minutes or so, and really strict about it. It was kinda nice to see him turn away the five skanky girls who sidled up to him, ignoring the huge line, asking to be let in to a party that had ended an hour ago. They served drinks in cute mason jars, and we got some drinks on the first floor, but didn't stay there long since the dance floor was up on the third floor, called the Woods. There was an $10 door fee to go into the Woods. It was really sweaty on the dance floor, and I got creeped on by some gross dudes. There is another bar on the third floor, with cool bartenders. I was very annoyed by the people who thought it was at all rational to bring their to-the-brim full drinks onto the dance floor, which was caving under the weight of all the people, thinking they could either drink it or save it from spilling everywhere. A girl spilled her drink all down my back, and in the middle of the dance floor...wtf why would you bring your full drink into the middle of the dance floor...I will never know. The coat check was a tiny rack that was packed with coats and exposed to everyone, and right next to the bar, meaning some drunk person could spill a drink all over the coat rack. I opted to save my money and hold onto my coat. It was across the street from a Value Village, and honestly I think I had more fun thrift shopping than dancing at Grim's.

Came here with a friend in our search for brunch deliciouso on the weekend. This place looks like Smiths on 15th. What the....? Frankly, I'm kind of getting tired of this whole chic-rustic-hipster restaurant/bar substituting all of their glasses and ramekins with mason jarring items. I'm semi-tired of the quintessential waiter or waitress with the black rimmed glasses decked in plaid with an attitude to rival a high-school mean girl. Who am I kidding? I am living in Cap Hill, the land of all things gay, black-framed, emo and plaid. When I complain about it, I am proud of it. Sometimes, I get into this anti-hipster movement (Blame my hyphy bay area friends for reminding me that I still listen to commercialized bay area hip hop and get stupid) and I swear I will never buy an overpriced PBR when I'm drunk; But when it comes down to it.... I'm back at Cha Cha's drinking my PBR and Johnny, drunkenly singing to some indie-electronic-emo crap. Anyways.. This place is bleeding Seattle. The wooden wall is made from wood from an old barn from the outskirts of Seattle. Their furniture and tables are antique and kinda sorta bad ass. Brunch was good. Our drinks were Cali Mimosas? I don't remember what was in them, but my cali born and raised girl and I ordered two and continued to check out the menu. We split the truffled leek and Havarti cheese grilled sandwich as well as the French Omelette. They were both delicious. Keep in mind this place isn't an American brunch served American style. This means... The portions are on the smaller side. Like you need to eat more, fat assy. Especially since last night, you devoured that king-size burrito from Rancho Bravo after a long evening of drinking and dancing around cap hill with your girlfriends. Just sayin'

I'm in love with this place. My first visit was in the Butterfly room on the second floor for a Birthday party, and what a great concept for private parties. A narrow warm/dimly lit room with mason jars full of beautiful butterflies line the walls with your own private bar. Score! And I'm not sure if it's open to the public yet but my friend and I got a sneak peek at the top floor that was in the works of becoming a woodsy rustic (total northwestern) themed room with another bar and dance floor. Onto the best part - the food!!!! If you need some serious comfort food, this is the place to go. I've tried The French Dip -Rare Roast Beef, Havarti, Homemade Horseradish Aioli with Au jus on a Giuseppe roll and it was so good!! I would also recommend the Blue Cheese Burger - Topped with caramelized onions, chipotle mayo and a side salad. I've been wanting to go back and checkout their THREE different options for Grilled Cheese Sammy's. These aren't just regular cheese sandwiches, they have fancy ingredients like Basil, Proscuitto & Truffle Leeks. Yes please! On top of having fabulous food, the drinks are a must-do as well. I love that they serve water and most cocktails in mini mason jar glasses. The Blood & Sand Intoxicant is very tasty - Scotch, sweet vermouth, cherry brandy & fresh orange juice to warm your belly, they also make a Manhattan to perfection. The fun thing about this place is that it's great for a large or small group. The communal seating in the middle of the restaurant is a great concept, takes you back to the school cafeteria days - sitting at a long table with the round swivel chairs. Or if it's a date night there are plenty of options for intimate seating along the windows.

Enters: *RIP my poor ears* Kelly & Co migrate to the 3rd FL Bass Haven *aw fuck it, i'm leavin' in 20* I don't know how you kids deal with such mind-blasting bass and sound. (although, sitting down, there's an enjoyable amount of eye candy at eye level)

God damn, the Bangkok PB sandwich is awesome. Who knew that spicy peanut butter, orange marmalade, cucumber and mint would be such a winning combination? I like it so much that I actually bought the ingredients so that I could make it at home every day.. but it's not quite the same. For HH, a full sandwich and salad is about $6.50. When it's not HH, it's about $8. The drinks come in mason jars -- mini jars for the shots, they have communal dining tables, and the food and drinks come out amazingly fast with sometimes friendly but often indifferent service. Go to Grim's and eat that Bangkok PB.

For a friends birthday, we had a fairly large group ready to get our grooves on! A couple people we knew had been here before so we decided to check it out again. The line outside took forever and a day (Which was fine assuming that it should be crowded and fun inside!) The bar downstairs was def packed. We waited quite a while to get drinks. Either way, the good thing is that we got our drinks. The dance floor on the third floor was packed as well. The music (for that night) was all techno-ish. It wasn't to my par. But we all either way had a good time. Overall, there a good vibe throughout the night. It was just way too crowded. I wouldn't mind coming back on a less crowded night!

I'm sort of torn on how to rate this place. The first few times I went to Grim's, we somehow ended up with this one waitress who gave off the vibe that my friends and I were an inconvenience to her. She would roll her eyes when someone was indecisive on what drink/meal to order. One time she rudely told us that since most of us were planning to order drinks we might as well just walk over to the bar and get it ourselves. wth? Oh and those chairs...they seem cool but I had close attempts on falling off of them. My last visit was a lot better. I got to hang out in the butterfly room which is a lot more comfortable and intimate than the downstairs. The bartender working up there was friendly and mixed some tasty drinks. I had the red devil and another cocktail similar to that, which was more on the tangy side thanks to the grapefruit juice. The upstairs, called "The Woods", is my favorite floor at Grim's. It's pretty much a dance floor with a bar. The music was alright but I love how everyone was just dancing and doing their own thing, which reminded me of "Sing Sing" nights back when Warroom existed. So in conclusion, I would give the place 3.5 stars.

Grim's got all kinds of stuff going for them! While I've heard great things about their food, it's the people watching that I love here! Grim's is a mix of great looking gay guys, hipsters, college scenesters, Capitol hill crew and asian invasion all rolled into 3 floors. The first floor is the good food, slow drink service, fun wobbly cafeteria seatings. The second floor is the beautiful lounge set up, really dark with good cushioned loungey tables and seating. Picture where you'd like to make out with someone, it'd be on this floor. The 3rd floor, up a terrifying set of stairs, is some kind of butterfly dance hall where the DJ is hidden by wood above the door, the bar is hidden, and there's all kind of pansexual activity goin on under the strobe lights to the untz untz untz of the music. I have to admit it feels kind of out of place for Capitol Hill or even Seattle, but I dig it, mainly for the people watching. TL:DR: Try their food, go up one flight of stairs to make out, go up two flights of stairs to dance.

Home of the fancy grilled cheese sandwich and the dark and stormy style cocktails. What's that you say? It's not a cocktail without bitters? Shut up. :D Every interesting bar has to have a non-obvious upstairs and Grim's is no exception. Go check it out. If you don't go upstairs, you'll be at a hipsteroff at the picnic tables with the rest of them. May the best mustache win.

The tuna casserole was pretty much tasty shells and cheese with chunks of white tuna ... very satisfying, and the portions were quite large. I also had three cocktails. Um, because I had three cocktails, I can't remember their names, but those were great too! The atmosphere is industrial and neat, with large windows, exposed wood, and bits of metal. I loved the bench seats that swing out on iron hinged supports! So cool. The upstairs Butterfly Bar is neat too, but I get the feeling I'm supposed to review it separately as it's somehow separate. Anyhow, go to Grim's, and look at the Butterfly Bar; if you're into insects, you'll love it!

Whether it be a night of drunken debauchery, a quaint little brunch, or noshing on an amazing grilled cheese sandwich... there's nothing "grim" about this great little spot in the heart of the CPH. The first thing you'll notice about it is the decor. The main seating is communal style, think you high school cafeteria except with much trendier seating. The seats are built into the long tables and swivel out when you need a place to rest that bum. Fitting with the decor, drinks (other than martinis) and water are served in mason jars. The vibe is very relaxed, the high ceilings give the place some depth and while it can get packed, I really never feel uncomfortable. The butterfly room upstairs is amazing and a great spot to get a late night drink going. A sexy room with a sexy vibe. The bartenders are all pretty great. Generous pours with a pretty unique signature drinks menu. The food here is just as amazing. You haven't lived until you try the grilled cheese #3, it's a truffled leek grilled cheese sandwich that is pure heaven. The brunch here is pretty damn good as well, the sausages are amazing and the french toast is absolutely divine. The egg's benne could use some work but overall a small complaint and doesn't really factor into my score of this place. Grim's is sexy and great spot for whatever you're down to do. Give it a shot.

I visited Grim's for brunch. Food: average-sized portions, not too large. I tried the crepes with ham, eggs and cheese with a side of fruit. Very good, but not super filling. I also tried the egg strata with mushrooms and Gruyere cheese - came in a nice bowl and piping hot. Better portion size, but would have benefited from a side of toast. Drink: a large assortment of mimosas, bloody marys, juices, coffee and tea. Coffee is by Cafe Vita which is always good. You can also get drinks by the carafe. Cold drinks are served in mason jars. Ambiance: very cool, rustic/industrial look. I've heard the Butterfly Lounge is even cooler! There are some smaller tables with cushy chairs, but then there are also long family-style tables. Customer service: very good. No complaints. Located in the center of Capitol Hill, so parking can always be a challenge. I would definitely go back - maybe for a drink in the evening!

Went to Grims the past couple Thursdays for beer and making an ass out of ourselves dancing. The environment was upbeat, plenty of female influence, they have a smaller but good selection of bottled beer though they did not have red stripe (the only bummer) ill be here again in the near future!

I've been here both for drinks at night and brunch during the day, and both were mediocre to disappointing. At night, the scene gets pretty bro-y. If that's your scene, then it's probably great. For brunch, the portions on my scramble were teeny tiny and the bacon wasn't fully cooked. At least the prices are low, but given the tiny portions, it's still not worth it.

My cousin rented out the ButterFly Lounge for her birthday and so we had that room to drink, and upstairs to party! I wish that they designated our area as a private party right away, since we had a lot of random people wandering into our area, trying to find the upstairs. The lounge area is really unique, with butterflies in jars all over the room, a beautiful tiled ceiling, benches and pillows to sit on, and a great stocked bar with a great bartender. There are a few candles in the area so be careful. My cousin's hair lit on fire. Their drinks are pretty good and fairly priced. They specialty drinks like their French '75 are probably my favorite. reason why they are their specialty drinks! Upstairs as packed and popping, playing music from the 90s on my cousins request and more, super fun to dance up there, but it's not a large space at all, so be wary to pushing around and stuff. The bar upstairs can get pretty packed and in demand kinda hard to get the bartenders attention. Overall. had a good night at Grims. Note: bathrooms are limited. One upstairs, one downstairs, all single bathrooms, and unisex, naymsayin?

Me and my mate came here the other day around lunchtime to have a drink and try a sandwich. I ordered 2 different drinks that had ginger beer (Dark & stormy, and Summer Storm). They were really good. The mason jars were indeed a cute touch. The grilled cheese sandwich with leeks was very tasty and so was the salad that came with it on the plate. The decor was nice, not what I was expecting (I kept seeing "steam punk" in other reviews but it wasn't very overwhelmingly steam punk to me). The service was prompt, friendly, and helpful. It was good food, good drinks, and good service. Next time I'm in town I'll come here. And I'm telling friends in Seattle about it!

I love grabbing lunch here once in a while. The french dip is one of my favorites. This is also one of my stops on a night out. They have a really cool butterfly lounge on the second floor and wicked dance floor on the third . I highly recommend this place.

This is my new favorite restaurant. Grim's atmosphere is warm and cozy, with a utilitarian elegance. The food is delicious and not overly pretentious. I had the Truffled Leek and Havarti sandwich which was delicious and delicate without being overly greasy or petite. The balsamic side salad was fresh and politely dressed. My companion chose the French Dip which was perfectly delightful. The accompanying sauces are flavorful, complimentary and not overpowering, but stars in their own right. Dessert was not to be missed. We chose the Cheesecake Flan and the Chocolate Tart. Both were amazing, but my favorite was the Cheesecake. Each came with surprise touches that added to my palates' delight. John, our waiter was attentive, friendly and more than happy to tell us about the restaurant and show us the upstairs Butterfly Lounge (which was closed). It is a beautiful space. I can't wait to come back!

I love all the steampunk bars on these couple of blocks. The buildings have so much character and history and if you come in an chat up your waiter/bartender you can usually find out a lot. The decor is so awesome, you can actually raise and lower your table on a cranking gear (hmmm I wonder if they actually want you to know this?) Had brunch here on Sunday. The service was very attentive and the food was very good. I came with 3 other people and we all got sandwiches, which were much bigger than I thought they'd be! The drinks came in Mason jars which was kind of fun too. Glad I came in at a quieter time too because I've stopped in for drinks before and even though I had a great time it was insanely busy! The butterfly room upstairs is really sexy. I kind of hope it gets a little LESS busy upstairs because it's sooo the perfect place to sit and relax with a drink :D

This place has great ambiance and great food. I had the French Onion soup and the Truffle Leak Grilled Cheese... TO-DIE-FOR. They serve the water in squat little mason jars and the big boy drinks come in bigger mason jars. For two drinks, 2 entrees and soup with tip we left paying under $30 so the prices aren't bad either.

I was at Grim's for the first time last night and I must say that I was disappointed in a couple ways. First of all, the loud techno music was so obnoxious we could barely stand it. After the 10th song we thought we were going to die. We asked our server to turn it down and he said that he would but that never happened. Also, The drinks were badly made and not too strong. I do want to say that the space is beautiful and the people that work there are really nice. I will try this place again in a couple months to see if they have worked out these issues.

Having recently moved to Seattle from New York, we are on the hunt for great restaurants. Looking around for a brunch spot one morning, we came across Grims and I must say I'm extremely happy we did! The decor is interesting, the service was excellent, and the food was outstanding. We enjoyed the omelets, but what really made the visit was the crepes. They simply melt in your mouth! Can't say enough great things about Grims except to stop reading and go there for brunch!!

Stopped in for a drink one afternoon and was really impressed with how the new owners turned a formerly run down gallery into a super cute tavern. I love the new fixtures, with exposed beams and light bulbs with filaments. The drink I had was excellent and the service was really great. A welcome addition to Capitol Hill. Looking forward to stopping back in to try the food.

Great refuge in the eye of the storm that is cap hill. The staff was friendly, they have Big Al's on tap, and the crostini's were, as others have said, very good. I would also have to agree with the other reviews regarding the decor. My friend did some work to the space when it was being built, and commented that the owner is also an architect, which makes complete sense when you see the level of detail everywhere. Although I love how early-century warehouse/factory is becoming a recurring theme for restaurants and bars now. I want to fabricate a reason to utilize the upstairs; maybe a "we made it through another day, it's a good excuse to celebrate" party... those are always a good time.

I have never written a review on Yelp before but after spending NYE at Yelp last night, I am compelled to write about the food and service. Our waitress (regrettably I did not get her name) was incredible! We had a large group on a crazy night.. She was prompt, friendly, and attentive! Our food (grilled cheese, turkey, and French Dip sandwiches) were all great and the food came out of the kitchen quickly..

Great idea with 3 levels of fun. However, the logistics are a nightmare! If it's a Friday or a Saturday, enjoy a 15-20 minute line between 8pm and midnight. Once you get in, you'll enjoy the pleasure of another 15-20 minutes to get a drink. Now that you have a drink in you and you feel the need to use the restroom, guess what??? You get a 25 minute wait this time! They have two single-stall, unisex bathrooms downstairs with a line that curls to the entrance of the bar. Want to use the bathroom on the 2nd floor? There is none. Want to use the bathroom on the 3rd floor? That'll cost you the cover price (usually $8). The fact is, it's a pretty decent bar with a nice beer selection and a relatively unique idea of serving drinks in mason jars. However, until they figure out logistics for bathrooms, I absolutely will not return. I can't figure out if this is a tactic for turnover and getting people in and out of the bar or just poor planning, but I'm out. I can see butterflies on a toothpick at the museum of natural history and they probably won't pat me down for a flask.

we left a cigar on the table before we left. less than 30 seconds later, it was gone. stolen by the gentlemen at the table next to us. my friend asked politely if he had seen his cigar and he said no, even though my friend saw it bulging from his pocket. now, thats the type of people you get here- douchebags and thieves! despite this bad experience, i love the space and the upstairs area and this alone, makes up for it. i would avoid the whole downstairs area bc its such a headache with rude waitstaff.

Grim's--I am so mad! All I have wanted for these past two(?) years is to get a glimpse of your awesome-sounding Butterfly Lounge. Apparently, this is much easier said then done. On my first trip (from Spokane) we went on a Thursday or something. When we asked about sitting in, or at the very minimum just looking at the Butterfly Lounge we were told it was only open on Fridays and Saturdays. After trying to send a message via Facebook, confirming Grim's was going to be open during Thanksgiving weekend, mentioning how we wanted to see the Butterfly Lounge (and hearing absolutely nothing back) we checked their website. I'm pretty sure it doesn't post restricted hours for the Butterfly Lounge there. But I'm too lazy to check now, so just know that's the impression I got. Seeing this Butterfly Lounge was on my to-do list and I was determined to make it happen the next time we drove the 6 hours to Seattle. So we went back to Grim's on a Saturday. When we walked in (around 1 PM) I saw a guy coming down the stairs-yay! So we walked up to finally see this Lounge. And it was closed. Apparently, so were the stairs, because when we came back down, that same guy put a chain across the entrance. I asked him if we could sit in the butterfly lounge and he told us it didn't open until 9PM. Ugh. If the Butterfly Lounge is only open on restricted days and times YOU need to post that in a prominent place! Very frustrating. I think he should have offered to at least SHOW us the room, since we came such a long way, but he just briskly told us to find a seat--down stairs. NOT cool. I doubt I'll go back a third time since the Butterfly Lounge is so elusive :-(

My friend and I went here for the first time today, completely on accident. We actually drove to Cap Hill to go to another restaurant, but they were closed. Grim's was the closest place open for breakfast, so we gave it a shot. We had eggs benedict and their breakfast plate and both were outstanding!! The cook clearly puts extra attention into their cooking. Both of these dishes were standard diner fare, so you wouldn't expect a whole lot from them. Wrong!! The eggs benedict was the best we'd ever had; very buttery!! And simple things like their sausage patties were also better than what we've had elsewhere. Obviously, Grim's uses top quality ingredients for their menu. The décor was also really cool. I'm a sucker for comfy, upholstered furniture, so add that to delicious dishes and I'm won over. The only thing they could do is replace the just a bit too small tables. However, we'll adjust;-) I'd highly recommend Grim's for breakfast. We'll definitely be back!!

Let me start off by saying that this meal I am about to write about was great...fantastic...awesome...memorable...and it hit the spot on all fronts. I had a Bombay & tonic, a french dip, and dessert was bread pudding. Let's begin, shall we... The Bombay & tonic was nice and stiff. I love the glasses they use...reminds me of a mason jar, but i forget the name. They definitely know how to mix a solid drink without overwhelming you with the alcohol. Yay! The french dip was soooooo good. The roast beef was as tender and juicy as can be, the havarti was nice and creamy, the horseradish aioli gave it a nice tangy bite, and the Au jus was PERFECT as it soaked into the bread and made each bite better than the last. It was like a rustic french dip...I loved it. And now for the bread pudding. Hands down, the best bread pudding I have ever had and that's saying a lot because my Aunts from Louisiana make great desserts and Grim's takes bread pudding to a another level. It was creamy and not too sweet; moist, with gelatin-like consistency (instead of being too soft or overdone). It arrived warm and begging to be eaten. My friend and I ate it like it was our last meal...seriously, it was that good. As for the service, it took a little while to get attention after we sat down, but once we got menus everything was smooth. I lowly lit restaurants, so the ambiance was perfect for me. Low lighting, communal tables, and boisterous conversations always make for a great setting to chow down and enjoy the night. This was my second time at Grim's, but the first time I sat down for a meal and it will not be the last. Good ish!

You know what? This place was freaking awesome. But let's be completely honest, I've written many reviews that say places are awesome. Though this place has a really unique feel that will blow your mind. Coming into this place I initially thought "Grims"? Really? Dude that's freaking depressing. Is this some ghost town pub? When I walked in, I was in awe. What an amazing atmosphere. Very chill and very hipster. Not in the weird way hipster, but in a very classy way. Drink were served in jars, it had a unique old look and feel to it, and a very comfy place at that. It made you want to STAY. But unlike a lot of people I like to eat. I know I know, this is a bar. But seriously a guys gotta eat. I had the bananna nutella panini. OMGGGGGGG. All I have to say is you have to TRY THIS. If you are a true nutella lover, they make an awesome panini desert into it. The presentation was awesome, the taste was superb, and the awesomeness just echoed into the tingling sensation of yummy food. Overall my experience here was awesome and was very unexpected when the food came out. Definitely need to try.

This is one of the most intriguing and well-designed places I have found in Seattle. The main floor has a historic feel as though one is shopping for magic wands in Ollivanders. But instead of "the wand chooses the wizard", you get the feeling that you'll hear -the drink chooses the drinker. The Butterfly room is reminiscent of Hong Kong opium hangouts during the 1920s, too bad they don't have large pillows for patrons to lounge while toking off large Moroccan hookas.

I first checked out Grim's during their pre-opening party: a rather disappointing experience involving being ignored at the bar and my leaving without ever having a drink. Although the Butterfly Lounge was kind of cool....And I really am bothered by any reference to "steampunk" and "Grim's" in the same sentence, unless the two words between the latter and the former are "is not". But I digress. Today I returned for lunch, wanting to check out this famously cheap menu I keep hearing about. It's true that pretty much everything on the menu is less than $10, which makes this a decent destination for an inexpensive lunch. I'm not sure about their sourcing, but the bread appears to be from Macrina, so that bit's local! The three of us decided to invent our own grilled cheese sampler, which involved ordering one of each of the three mini grilled cheeses with tomato soup chaser (deceptively, the "three" does not mean you get a taste of each of the three types of grilled cheese, which had been my hope since the three types are listed elsewhere on the menu separately). Best one? The tomato, basil, prosciutto and gruyere: delicate, a bit salty, with each distinct flavor apparent bite to bite. The other two were a bit forgettable: the truffled leek with herbs and havarti tasted fairly plain, and the chipotle spread, pico de gallo and cheddar was more like a grilled cheese enfolding fillings the consistency of spicy nacho topping. (Slightly more refined, but definitely in the same food universe.) The tomato soup chaser was good, neither acidic nor sweet, and the salad fairly standard, with a little dusting of Parmesan over a balsamic vinaigrette. For $7.50, it's a decent assortment on a cool wintry afternoon (but stick to the prosciutto option). Yet I don't think this is anything to rave about: Oddfellows offers a similar yet much more interesting menu, and there are tastier (and much larger) sandwiches to be had down the street at one of the two H-named shops for only a slightly higher price point. (Or there's my own kitchen with a toasted English muffin BLT wisped with chevre and roasted garlic jam or a bowl of jalapeno-spiked chicken chipotle chili with hominy...but that's private.) The drink menu looks good, so perhaps I'll revisit the prosciutto grilled cheese and indulge in a liquid lunch on the side for my next visit. I like a good cocktail (and would love to finally get to try one!), so maybe a window seat in the comfy chairs is in my Grim future....

If you're going to be drinking here you better order double shots for everything or else you'll just taste water and juice. Not really sure what it was but the vibe of this place just wasn't doing it for me. And the drinks weren't either because I'm pretty sure there was a minimal amount of alcohol in them until I finally realized I would need to order doubles for everything. I'll probably give this place another shot sometime, but who knows.. There's always a super long line to get in late night on the weekend.

When you walk in, it can seem a little bit austere, even a bit precious. The floors are polished within an inch of their lives. The walls are polished within an inch of their lives. The service is polished within an inch of its life. It's so well-run, you almost don't want to be there, lest you mess it up a little or something. But then you realize that somebody put this place together exactly the way they wanted it to be, and that makes it quite welcoming. The furniture might seem like they're trying to create an eclectic vibe from pieces that are too far apart to complement each other, but they're really designed to create different spaces within the main dining room. There are communal picnic tables, homey stuffed chairs, and sections with bar stools--all your social seating setting needs are covered. The menu can seem a bit precious at a glance--three different grilled cheese? But then you notice that everything on the menu is under $10. EVERYTHING. Well, with the exception of bottles of wine, and the bottle of Orval. Yeah, $10 for a bottle of beer is more than you might ordinarily spend, but it is Orval, after all, and the supermarket price on it is already $6-$6.50 at least, so marked up to $10 for restaurant service is more than fair. And then it all starts to come together--cool found or repurposed materials for the decor, no menu items in double digits. This is what life was like for creative, resourceful people in their 20s. And evidently, there still are people in their 20s, and that youthful eclecticism is alive and well in the administration of Grim's. Cool spot. Very cool spot.

What happened to the idea of reviewing a business based on the quality of service they provide? Everyone has their undies in a bunch over this place. Yeesh! While I still mourn the loss of Grey Gallery, I was thrilled to see what the folks behind Po Dog and Auto Battery had come up with. This is a fantastic space with some wildly creative decor. Whether you classify it steampunk or not isn't even important, it's cool. End of story. A friend and I enjoyed some of the 'intoxicants' from the drink menu and when we ran out of ideas we asked the bartender to come up with something. Right there on the spot he created a fantastic gin based cocktail that blew us both away. Though we spent most of our time sitting at the bar, we were encouraged to go upstairs and check out the butterfly lounge. Good thing we did! The space is 4x bigger than it was as Grey Gallery and it's sexy as all hell. If you're having a birthday, you're planning a date, or you just want to see something new and unique - this lounge is perfect! There are close to 100 different butterflies on display in little glass jars, it's dimly lit, and there's a separate bar up here too. Super convenient. As I was up there browsing, the bartender went out of his way to talk about the butterflies, explain some of the species and inform me that they have over 35 varieties to look at. It was fascinating. Thankfully it was the end of the night because there wasn't anyone else up there and I could take my sweet time looking at each and every one. Basically this bar has loads to offer. Food, drinks, communal eating/drinking areas, barstools at the bar, private tables and seats. With regards to the theme, whether you want to argue just how steampunk it is or not, its unique. Give it a try, you'll be back.

Pretty great place to go on the weekends, nice crowd, good food and drink, and lively dancefloor upstairs. The only reason it's not getting a 4 or 5 star is because of the bouncer, he's a real dickwad, and the place's strategy of getting people in through the door: the classic "make a fake line and they will come". Well, it works, for now. People are lined up down the block and they hold everyone out there, whether they're in mini skirts in sideways rain or otherwise, then when you finally get in you realize that the place is half empty and there is no reason at all for a line, other than to try to trick passerby into thinking that the place is packed. I suspect that this tactic won't work forever. Were it not for the fake line/a-hole bouncer this place would be a 4 or a 5 star nightlife venue on Cap Hill.

Love this place, great location, and great atmoshpere. I'm always craving their grilled cheese (number two, of course) and their soup. It is amazing. The decor just sets the place off, the little lock boxes all over the wall are awesome and give it a cool unique touch. Their Mexican and Moscow mules are just what I want in a drink, STRONG and tasty. Love the fact that themed floors for this place, too cool. The third level is a dance floor that you have to pay cover for on weekends, depending on who you are, it may or may not be worth your money. Hip place, fun to take friends to especially if they've never been. Gotta love Grims all the way!

All I can say is oh my grilled cheese. They have quite the selection! I've had the grilled cheese with leeks and it gave me boners. The only other thing I've tried food wise is the goat cheese and artichoke crostini - also delightful! They serve their drinks out of jars. That's fun and different and it makes me feel like summer time and sunglasses. I've also heard about 3 stories and actually witnessed it happening to someone once - of people falling after standing up and trying to sit back down on their chairs on the family style tables in the middle of the room. The chairs are attached to the table and if and when you stand up for any reason, EVEN IF ONLY FOR A SECOND, the chair will turn in and go under the table and when you go to sit back down you will likely fall on your ass and look like an ass. But don't worry or feel stupid, because it's likely happened to someone else in the bar who is trying to avoid eye contact with you. We checked into how much it costs to rent out the upstairs room and I remember it being CRAZY expensive for what seemed like a short period of time, like a grand for 3 hours? I was sorta buzzed so I'm not sure if that's true, but I know that my friend and I both were shocked about the pricing. Maybe we're just poor and jealous. Big whoop. I definitely want to come back and taste more things here. And I will.

Disclaimer: ive never been here for food... i hear it's pretty good. 1. Why would you wait in line to come here when there are SO MANY GREAT PLACES on the hill? It's super crowded, and it takes forever to get a drink... and the drinks were nothing special. Also, i don't know if it's just me, but im convinced the majority of the people here are frat boys and belltown girls. 2. THis is what i call Faux-thentic. everything looks rustic, industrial, old, and one of a kind... when really the decor is not authentic in any way. It's as if the designers googled "williamsburg, Brooklyn" or "Hipster Bar" and just followed the directions. In their defense thought - the butterfly room is pretty cool

This is most def a place I would Come to with my gfs. We were here for a birthday and had the butterfly room reserved and the bartender knows How to make great drinks. We went upstairs and danced our butts off and the mix of music was great. It does get really hot though but you should expect that. Good times!

Love the Butterfly Lounge upstairs, good setting and excellent drinks. Had a delicious Blood & Sand here, Vodka Drink #2 is luscious (lime, grapefruit, St. Germaine, Peychaud's). Bartender also makes to order. Drinks served in cute Mason mini-jars. Dim-lit lounge seating, not too loud. Perfect weeknight perch to unwind.

We received our RSVP to Grim's soft opening which was last nite and let me just say ... FANTABULOUS! Nice work, my friends! The decor (Reclaimed wood from a barn? Molding from a place in Chinatown? Super cool "rusted" walls? Hello SteamCon!), butterfly lounge (dark & mysterious, w/ a sweet tin ceiling), drinks (order a Vodka #2), fabulous veteran bartenders, mason jars that drinks were served in (cute, btw), 8 different kinds of bruschetta toppings, & staff were all AWESOME and well worth the wait. The music was a wee loud, but people, let's keep in mind that it was their soft opening, so it's not like there's going to be bumpin' tunes every nite. I believe last nite was an exception. We came back today for lunch and it was excellent. Sandwiches, soups, salads, small plates, and giant carafes of Cafe Vita coffee? Yes please! There are 3 different varieties of grilled cheese sandwiches and let me tell you, I'll be trying all 3 of them. Their chipotle grilled cheese was one of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I've ever had and trust me, I'm a freaking connoisseur in that department. The tomato soup? Perfect. I've proclaimed myself Khampaeng Panyathong's newest fan. I think we've just found our new favourite place on the hill! Bravo, Team Grim, BRAVO! You'll be seeing a lot more of us!

I have been to Grims a few different times. Generally speaking their drinks are ok and the ambiance is not bad. The reason I am giving Grims one star is because of the total epic failure in service. I ordered a meal I didn't like, it wasn't cooked well and after two bites I asked the waiter if I could send this back and maybe swap it out for something else. The waiter, hesitated then said I could order something else but basically I would be paying for whatever I ordered and the item I didn't eat. I decided to pass, where I was then charged for the meal I returned uneaten. This has never happened to me before and I was not only disapointed because the serivce was shitty, my meal was shiity, but then I paid for a meal I didn't eat or even like. I don't know if this was the general policy of the resturant or if the waiter was just a hipster jerk with high waters on. My advice make sure you order something basic that you will enjoy or you'll leave with less money, an empty stomach, and a bitter taste in your mouth.

I think this place might become my new local! I love the atmosphere - the keyhole wall, the reclaimed tables, the wire-and-bulb lighting - and the service is quick and friendly. The space has been used to its full advantage and it looks gorgeous, warm and welcoming - and I adore the steampunk twist! Every drink I've tried - and I've sampled most of the menu - was delicious. As far as the food is concerned, everything we had over multiple visits, both for dinner and brunch, was spot-on. The grilled cheeses, the steak, the omelettes and scrambles are all fantastic. Grim's is kind of a hidden gem for brunch - it's not one of the Hill standbys so you can get a good seat immediately upon walking in and dine in style. The service has always been fantastic, whether Grim's is packed or slow and lazy on a Sunday afternoon. One particular event stands out - the boy and I came for dinner and suddenly found ourselves in a crunch for time. We let our server know, not expecting much since the joint was hoppin' but hopin' for the best, and we got our order in, our food out and our check within forty-five minutes! Now that's quality. The real gem here, though, is the upstairs butterfly room. It's the perfect place to come on a rainy day and lose yourself in the dim elegance of the lounge. It's often booked for private parties, but I look forward to spending more time there with a French 75 or a Dark & Stormy in hand.

I've only been here to the bar and haven't tried any food. This is a good place to hit up when bar hopping around Cap Hill, especially if the Butterfly Lounge is open! This place rocks, but you have to get here before 9:30 or the line is crazy long to get in.

Amazing brunch with really good Bloody Mary's. I met my friend here for on a Sunday afternoon and I have to say that this place was possibly one of the best places that I had brunch while in the area on holiday. I highly recommend the Bloody Mary and also the French Toast which the bread is from a local bakery "Macrina". My friend and i both agreed that we should have a brunch appetizer and the Macrina French Toast seemed fitting. Whateves, we were enjoying the day and caloric intake wasn't the least thing on our minds. Plus with all the walking you do in the city you certainly make up for it. My entree was the Capitol Hill Scramble which is a spin off Lox and Bagels. Slightly different but really good. Now, it does get packed in here so if you are in a large party I would suggest phoning about reservations. Customer service is good, food is really good. Another perk is if you roam around the neighborhood you will find some rad street art. I hunted for the said to be Banksy piece but it has apparently been covered up.

It was very loud on a Friday night even though the bar was set up in a more intimate manner (little loveseats and tiny couches, almost everything served in mason jars), so it was difficult to hear and certainly not a great place for conversation. Upstairs had a little dance area. It definitely seemed happening. We had some college girls next to us taking shots without using their hands, and a guy pouring all of his drinks into a 2003 trophy. Interesting to say the least.

If you are a hipster, you will love checking in here. You drink out of Mason jars and sit at repurposed tables. The chairs swivel a lot which makes them hard to get comfortable on, but with the right company, they are worth the pain in the butt they cause. The brunch menu was diverse enough for a picky eater like myself, but I just didn't like the taste of my food. My friends seemed to like theirs (especially the Eggs Benedict). I got the Meat and Potatoes which came on a plate with olive oil. It just made everything kinda greasy. The portion sizes were kind of small, and I will still hungry after my meal, but didn't order anything else. The coolest thing about this place is the library card catalog and the wall of locks and post office boxes. Kinda funky and cool. The service was mediocre. The took our order, dropped it off, didn't bother to check up on us or anything. When the server brought our food, I had to direct him to which person had which meal. Grim's gets a solid "Eh" from me. Not impressed, but if friends were going here, I wouldn't cancel because of the venue.

I think we found our new favorite bar! We were looking for a bar to have my partner's tenure celebration, and had a hard time finding something that fit. Some places were too hipster, while others were too elitist. One was too specialized, while another didn't have any personality. Grim's was just right! Happy hour menu is great, and the drinks and service were all excellent. We brought a large group (15+), and were able to hang out at one of the long tables with the fun metal swinging chairs. Our beverages and food was kept fresh, and they were super nice the whole time. Decor-wise, we loved the various fixtures and items. It's dark enough to be intimate without worrying about running into someone else. The metal finishes, old wood, and mailboxes under the bar give it just enough steam-punk. In a word? Cool.

We came here for my friends wife's Birthday. This is one of the best places to go as far as Capital Hill is concerned. They have the full bar on the first level and then a dance club on the 2nd level (with a bar of course as well). Both levels are pretty good size areas. You have to get here by 10:30pm or 11:00pm or else you have to deal with a big line. The sad part is the bouncers make you wait when there's plenty of room. I hate when bouncers do that. Then when you get in there's another line to go upstairs to the dance floor. That line didn't move in a half hour so we left. When you do finally go upstairs there's a $5 cover charge.

If you don't mind touching elbows with people, this place is for you! VERY busy and SUPER fun! Bar atmosphere (of course), so eat outside if you can because people watching here is so much fun! Grilled cheese is always a to-go staple. Cannot complain about this place because who doesn't like drinking out of a mason jar? Favorite thing about this restaurant is that the drinks are always strong!

Grim's is basically two places in one. The downstairs and the upstairs. I give the downstairs 4.5 stars. It's laid out pretty well, the decor is cool, and the bartenders are friendly and do a great job. Now for the upstairs. I give the upstairs about a 1.5 or 2. The music is decent. The decor is pretty cool. The floor shaking is a little concerning, but not bad. The problem with the upstairs is the bar. It's like night and day from downstairs. It's incredibly slow and the bartenders are horrid. How hard is it to do your job and pour some drinks? I will answer that, it's not hard. If they don't like it, they should quit. I am dumb founded at how many places in Seattle put up with slow bartenders who act like they are doing you a favor by serving you. And this coming from someone who tips well.

I'm not sure when or how, but Grim's has become "my bar." My friends and I all seem to just gravitate here for one reason or another. For starters, the cocktails are usually mixed well and incredibly strong. I also think they're reasonably priced considering they're typically 90% booze. The Dark and Stormy is my go-to drink but I've probably sampled their entire cocktail specialty menu and on countless occasions have had bartenders whip me up something random (one in particular makes his own unique version of a Long Island.... which has almond liqueur and whisky among other things... potent but tasty). I find the downstairs to be awkward (the cafeteria sitting isn't my style and I don't like the weird swivel chairs) but that's fine, I try and spend as much time as possible in the Butterfly Lounge. The Butterfly Lounge is the second floor of Grim's and is much more intimate. The bench and ottoman seating create an atmosphere more conducive to chatting and relaxing and the wait at the full bar is always short. The third floor is The Woods, which is their version of a dance floor, and is usually where I end up at the end of the night. They play a nice selection of music and there's a third, full bar located on this floor. If I was exclusively looking for a club setting this wouldn't be at the top of my list (I'd look to Belltown or Pioneer Square for that) but it's a nice option when you're only down a flight of stairs. While Grim's does get incredibly busy, service only occasionally suffers. There have been times where I've had to wait a long time for a drink, but isn't that true of most places? My main advice is always try and order drinks directly from the bar (if you order from your server and it's busy you're looking at a 10+ minute wait). If you're in the area, check it out!

Wanna have a beer? Wanna be able to hear the person next to you when you drink it? Go to Grim's. This isn't your atypical gay bar. It's tastefully decorated in a chic, lodge woodwork with interesting architecture and mis-matched furniture. Someone put a lot of thought into the interior design of this place, and it shows. I like to come here on first dates, a beer after work with friends, or to take "first timers" to a Capitol HIll gay bar, given its tame atmosphere.

I've been here on various occasions, mostly in the evening when it's extremely crowded. Grim's has a cool style and atmosphere on the main floor and the butterfly room is a pretty nice loungy area. My friend reserved the butterfly room for her birthday one night; they even had a special drink made for her. Cool place for weeknight evenings, but be prepared for crowds and unisex bathrooms. We recently went to Grim's for a weeknight dinner and it was surprisingly quite good. There were only a few parties, so we got to relax and really take in the decor. Service was very nice and responsive. I was impressed by the food, as my only prior experience were crowded weeknights, they actually have a decent food menu. We had: - grilled cheese and tomato soup: simple but so yummy! - meat and cheese plate: a lot of meat and cheese for the price, but not the best cheese varieties (at least I wasn't a fan) - truffle mac n cheese: again, simple and yummy The prices are reasonable considering the portion size and taste. I didn't have any of their drinks this time, but usually grab a beer on tap. They always have a good option. I also learned that they serve brunch, so I'll have to try it out one of these weekends.

Impossible to get service on a Saturday night. Waiting for almost 30mins at the bar and the bartender never even glanced down the end where I was. I just left. Not memorable at all. :(

My husband and I were on a hunt a few months back for some food one night on capital hill. We were walking past and the smell of their food pulled us in. We've been back a few times now and have enjoyed every visit. Their food has never disappointed us. The service was pretty decent as well. I love the decor and the atmosphere. We recommend this to our friends all the time.

I've been going to Grim's for the past 3 years, but after this last weekend I no longer will. Two of my friends had their phones stolen. They were wearing cross body purses, and both were taken out of their purses while on the dance floor. We also came across another girl who had the exact same thing happen. My friend and I went up to the DJ, because we felt like he should give just a general warning to keep on the look out. 3 phones had been stolen all w/in 10 minutes of each other, and it could have easily been more. The DJ provided the WORST response saying, "he did not want to stop the music" and give a warning to the patrons that they should be wary of theft. I recognize that it is not their responsibillity for them to recover our phones. However, they should have the common decency to warn others and do what they can to protect the people who go there instead of prioritizing the music over safety.

I came here for a friend's birthday and I loved it! The drinks were great and the food was pretty tasty too. I really like the overall atmosphere - cool, fun, chill. We also checked out the upstairs, which is an open dance floor + bar. I've heard good things but was somewhat disappointed when the DJ was playing random / non-upbeat music. However, I won't let this ruin my overall opinion of Grim's... I'll be back!

Waiting in line sucks, especially in the pouring rain. But once you go inside, it's like freaking Narnia. Ok, not so much Narnia, but a Butterfly Lounge. (Really, I have no idea what the heck that means)... I was confused at first, but I finally figured out that the "Woods" people have been referring to is the third floor of Grim's. The Woods, Grims, Butterfly Lounge... yeah, kind of confusing. Why couldn't they make it simple enough? I thought I was trying to find a different venue when it was someone's birthday party. I'm not sure if they always make you pay cover, but I did pay five bucks that night. I came here solely for the dance floor (The Woods). I thought it would be lame, but much to my surprise, I loved the music and the crowd and the overall experience. They mostly played 90s music, and I couldn't complain since I grew up with that stuff. Come here for a good time, and like it says on the sign next to the DJ, "get off your f*cking phone and dance already." Note to self: Try their food sometime.

Atmosphere: nice dimmer lights, beautiful wood tables, and a classy picnic feel. Perfect for a date or a meeting of friends Food: yummy grilled cheeses and tomato soup, spaghetti, garlic cheesy bread, etc. Good portion sizes, nice ingredients, and nice presentation. Service: nice bartending, terrible waitresses (for the most part) who bitch if you ask for a fork or a pen that works and who take a while to refill drinks when its slow. My friends come here a lot and we know if we have a certain server that she'll be focused on flirting with the bartender rather than serving us.

I was pretty excited walking into Grim's. On first inspection, there appeared to be much to like but then after a while you realize this is probably not where you're gonna be spending the rest of the night. I do like the decor of Grim's very much. They've done an amazing job at using recycled building materials like apartment mailboxes by the bar and a wall of door locks by the restrooms. That plus the communal tables were a nice touch. I ordered a Moscow Mule and it was well made although it's not a hard drink to screw up. I appreciated the prompt service though. I think the problem with Grim's is that it's hard to stay long here. The fixed seats by the tables make me feel like I'm at a food court... and you don't hang around a food court. I really like the incandescent lightbulb chandeliers but I think we needed just a smidgen more light. It will be interesting what happens when incandescents begin getting phased out come 2012. All in all though, Grim's isn't a bad place for a drink. It's just not too comfortable a space for you to hang out long so if all you need is a place for a quick drink, then stop on by. Otherwise grab a cocktail and continue on your crawl.

I went to Grim's about a year ago for a happy hour and then inexplicably forgot about it. After a friend suggested it as an inexpensive brunch option, I decided to revisit this wonderful spot. My Midwestern desires for a hearty, yet cheap, brunch seem to be thwarted constantly in Seattle, but I was pleasantly surprised by Grim's. I ordered the Capitol Hill Lox and a cup of coffee. The cheap mimosas were tempting, but I resisted. My order was prompt, and despite it's size, it was very filling and damned tasty. Even with a generous tip, I spent 15 bucks total and left satisfied. Be warned, Grim's, I shall return.

I didn't like this place, to be frank. It seemed really uppity to me, then again I'm a university student and there were a bunch of people in their late twenties and early thirties who looked like they tried really hard with their outfits and were drinking cosmos and wine. Okay, I'm being mean. I'll stop. We came here to check out the butterfly lounge but there was a fairly hefty cover charge so we said screw that and wandered to one of the many other bars in Capitol Hill. Oh, also, if you don't have a horizontal ID they might not let you in. This is completely understandable, however, what's the point of that if the bouncer doesn't even follow the rule? He was an ass about my boyfriend's vertical ID (I know, he really needs to get a horizontal one), but then when I went inside to tell my friends who had already went in that we had to leave, the bouncer was like, 'Just this once.' and let him in. That was sort of nice? But also pretty weird because he was acting all douche-y about it before. Also, it's possible that he allowed it because there were a lot of us and we were basically money walking out of the door. The decor is pretty nice. It just seemed snobby and expensive. Maybe I'd come back here to eat food earlier in the day, but I do not recommend it to bar hop.

I enjoyed it. Three levels = cool. Butterfly room or museum or whatever...kinda awesome. Our timing was rather great as we had a very short wait in line (for our short wait the door guy was kind enough to lend us an umbrella). After we got in the line got long fast..so I'd say come on the earlier side and hang out a bit. In short I had a great time and will likely go back.

I've been to Grim's previously and loved their grilled cheese and drinks. Last time however I ordered the 'cured meat' plate and was surprised when a plate of chopped lunch meat arrived at the table - turkey, roast beef and a wee bit of prosciutto. I was expecting a collection of salami, pastrami and the like. Did they not know what cured meat was? I wondered. Had they run out and figured I'd be drunk enough to not care about the lunch meat platter? VERY disappointing :(

I was so excited to try this place because friends told me it was good. I don't know if I went on an off-night or something, but it was such a bad experience. They only had one server on duty, and there were lots of patrons. The food we ordered took such a long time, and once it came, it was a disappointment. The crostini was ridiculous--it looked like something a five year old put together. My boyfriend had the bleu cheese burger: the patty was over-done; charred to a crisp. The whole thing was horribly dry. I got the Chicken Paillard. It was so horribly mediocre, something I could have just made for myself at home. The chicken breast tasted like it had salt, pepper, oil, and that's it. Lemon vinaigrette was nowhere in sight.

I've been here a couple of times, both good experiences. Lines are long, okay, cool whatever. But my last visit here was ridiculous. It was my sisters birthday and she had reserved a table for all her guests to eat & drink at. Sweet! I came late due to work and had to wait in line EVEN THOUGH there was a spot for me at the table. Multiple people from the party tried to talk to the guy at the door to let me in and he still wouldnt let me though. WTF? i dont see what the big fking deal was since we had a reserved table with some open seats. The people in front of me were having the same issue as well. What i dont understand was why were they making people wait when 1. it was NOT crowded at all, there wernt tons of people around the bar and there wasnt another line going on for The Woods at that point , and 2. When they started letting people in, it wasn't like others were coming out, so why the hell were they holding up the line?!?! Seriously Grims, you guys need to come up with a better system here. Went here for the first time last a few weekends ago and can't stop thinking about the strata that I had... to die for! Also, our server was engaging and genuine, calling our drinks, "happiness in a glass" and making great conversation without intruding. It was a mellow brunch location and we will definitely return for more!

Been here to this establishment a couple of times recently for birthday parties. Upstairs on 2nd Floor is the cool Butterfly Lounge and on 3rd Floor is the Woods (kinda of like a club/loft area full of drinks and dancing.) I enjoyed the seating area, it was pretty unique with the old school swaying round seats and long benches. Would definitely recommend the all of the grilled cheese sandwiches. I was a big fan of the Truffle oil and leeks grilled cheese.

I saw Grimm's on TV and it reminded me of Grim's. This is a pretty neat place. Drinks are good but what's the best is the overall atmosphere, as it's fairly low key and low drama. The first floor is a large open layout where you can have drinks and chat with your friends. It can get pretty crowded and a little too loud that it becomes difficult to hear what other people are saying. Upstairs is a dance floor. You pay a cover to get in but I would save my money and go elsewhere. Based on my experience, it was very much comparable to dancing to bagpipe music... aka not fun. Also, very few people were dancing so that was a traumatic experience. Anyways, I would definitely come back.

My review is based on just coming to Grim's for a social event (and then stayed after when it was reopened to the public). I have not seen their menu but I hear it is quite good. The staff was very friendly, they had their own staff member go around serving hors d'oeuvres and drinks. Their signature drink with lime and vodka was really good. I like that all of the drinks, beer and mixed drinks come in glass jars, very cool! They had this great chipotle grilled cheese sandwiches, bruschetta, and other goodies! The place is dimly lit, has a good amount of long tables for seating and they have a really cool Butterfly Lounge upstairs with a small bar, tables, and seating against the wall. There are really beautiful and exotic butterflies of all colors and varieties in glass jars lining the whole lounge. Check it out!

Grims is a place I went to probably 5-6 times in total. Today's experience was the worst, and here worst means 3 stars. Yup, that means all 4-5 previous times were 4 stars or more, I just wasn't a Yelp member back then to give them that rating. Oh well, though luck ! I've been a big fan of their crostinis (toasted baguette slices with various items on top such as roast beef or smoked salmon) and onion soup, and well, I again ordered the roast beef crostinis and onion soup today, along with a garlic cheese bread and a glass of red. To my disappointment the crostinis arrived with slices of beef that just did not look appetizing, instead of the usual pink in the middle, dark on the outside and tender roast beef I got slices of what I hope was beef that were grey and unattractive. The taste was ok, not the good taste I remembered from past experience (though my tastebuds might have been affected by the visual experience...) and the onion soup was good but lacked enough cheese. The garlic cheese bread was a first try for me and I was not a fan, but granted, I've never been a fan of cheddar and havarti, plus they put this on bread that didn't have a hard crusty, and the snobby european that I am dislike that. The place itself is pretty nice, the center is filled with long tables at which multiple groups typically sit, and the walls are lined up with 2 seats tables for more intimate experiences. There's also a 2nd floor with dancing (and a cover charge) but this isn't my thing and I never set foot there, they frequently have a line at the door though, so it seems to be popular. The experience won't be my last, it wasn't awful, simply not great, I hope this was a one-off for Grim's and will give them another shot in a few weeks probably.

I have ended up here on many nights when I'm just not sure where to go for a cocktail. Grim's is always a sure bet on a great cocktail and fun atmosphere. I love their butterfly room upstairs and I hear they have a third floor now although, I haven't been up to see it. I have been here once for brunch as well. We had great service and the bloody marys were terrific. The menu items were all perfect. I ordered the biscuits and gravy and a side of scrambled eggs. Oh my god! Can I please have one more of each?! This is a fantastic spot for a casual lunch, brunch or a late night cocktail. One of my favorites on the hill. I will be back over and over again.

My first time to Grims was about 4 months ago. I've been going back now & then since, so it pleasantly surprised me. This has taken the place of the old Grey art bar. While I wasn't a huge fan of the subdued Grey, the folks behind Grims did a great job renovating the place and keeping it feeling open and inviting. My understanding is that it's owned by the duo that set up Po-Dog, The Social and several other local establishments. Downstairs is a large, quite open room with large long tables for people to sit on. The bar is against the back. I didn't notice any drink specials, so I stuck to the vodka sodas and dabbled a bit with the Hamm's beer. The later wasn't nearly as refreshing as the name implies. Drinks are normally provided in mason jars. Upstairs is the Butterfly Lounge, a long loungey area which is lined with walls of candles and a bar at the very end. You can reserve it for birthdays, special events, etc. On the very far upstairs is their dance floor called "The Woods" which plays mainly hip hop. Overall the bar can get packed on weekends, so get there early as there normally is a long line. The drinks were pretty meh but their selection of beers was decent.

I need to get in on the food movement here, but I was more concerned about the drinks. I wish I could remember the name of my fantabulous drink, but maybe the drink is to blame for that. However, I do remember the delicious drink and super cool atmosphere. The rugged, industrial feel, definitely was memorable! I will be back. I hope the food is as good as I hear it is! On a mission!

Really more of a 3.5 but tie goes to the runner. Waaay back in January the bartender at Manhattan Drugs suggested we come to Grim's for brunch. This weekend, we did. He had prepped us for an amazing event that was always packed and crazy. So we prepared. Not being of Cap hill stock, we planned and plotted to get to brunch as close to opening as possible (breakfast is, quite possibly, the worst meal to wait in line for) which happened to be 10am. Naturally, we (I) was running late so when we got there at 10:40a I had mentally prepared myself to have to wait, hoping maybe for some coffee in the line like the Dish does. Hooray for us because there was only one table occupied. kind of concerning....? We ordered bloody mary's to start. They were good but a little aggressive on the pepper. Don't get me wrong, I prefer my mary spicy but I don't want to pick peppercorns out of my teeth. on the food side, I ordered an omelet and my friend ordered the french dip. my food was perfectly fine. I really appreciate the not out of control portion and it was tasty. Friend-o says it was the best french dip she's ever had. Though the place started to fill up a little after our arrival, it was less than half full for the entirety of our stay. I bring this up because it still wasn't enough tables to explain the incredibly slow service we had. I get that it was a one man show on the floor - and there's a ton of grace for that but we waiting almost 20 minutes to get our check that never actually came. I finally went up to the bar with our money. boo. In spite of that, I'll come back. It was good, inexpensive, and the right amount of food.

How does this place have a four star average? I've been here three times and the service has been horrid twice (e.g., twice I sat at the bar for over 20 minutes without so much as a nod from the three bartenders gossiping in the corner). Today, I was served the worst Dark & Stormy (and one of the worst drinks, period) I've ever put in my mouth -- and it was featured on their cocktail list. They've taken the few things that were proper at Grey Gallery (drinks, service, etc.) and successfully negated them. I really hope their food is fantastic because that would be the only justification I can see for giving this place more than a star.

This place rocks! I met some girlfriends there for the first time last night and I was in awe as soon as I walked in. The first room is gigantic, shabby chic, and there's a wall with a ton of keyholes on it - I want that! We had our drinks on the 2nd floor, aka the Butterfly Lounge, and it was superb. It's dark, intimately lit, there's jars of butterflies lining the walls on shelves, and you have your own bartender. I didn't catch our bartender's name, but he was very friendly and made me 2 highly delicious Bloody Marys. I will definitely be back! :)
