I'm happy with everything at Duke's except the prices. Alternating views of whitecaps on the Sound and the Masters on an unobtrusive HD flat screen in the corner. The place was packed, though we managed to get a table inside right away. Summer is definitely a better time to dine here, at the outside tables. Try not to sit by the door, which kept letting in an arctic blast and slamming shut every 5 minutes as people left. Chowders: excellent, service, same. 5 of us shared a chop seafood salad which was outstanding. The burger also tops. Anthony was our friendly server and kept checking up on us. I recommend it as a happy hour & light food place (soups, salads, burgers). It's pricey for what you get.

I guess this is supposed to be a fancier chowder/seafood restaurant because food is definately pricier here. Fish and Chips is about $16, they have good bloody marys that come with alot of garnish (olives, pickled green beans AND prawns!), lots of great cocktails and plenty of seating both inside and outside including their balcony that provides a great view. I definately recommend the happy hour since it's much cheaper. Amazing chowder and fish and chips never disappoint me. Great place for a casual date!

Any of the 6 Duke's locations provides fantastic food and very friendly staff. They also have a special Duke's blend of Woodford Reserve that is to die for. I will say that my favorite location is Alki because the interior is very classy and there's a nice view of the beach. I usually get the Mahi Mahi tacos but every other dish I have tried has been spot on. If you want quality without any uptightness, this is it.

What can you say. When its its they have their windows open out to the sunset of alki. The chowder is really good. Although I would say its still a toss up for me between this place and ivars. But the chowder(s) they have there is really good. I also had the burger there. It was good. I was a bit sad when I asked them to box it up and they accidently threw it away. But they made up for it by giving us a complementary desert (BUTTERFINGER Ice Cream). It was damn good stuff. Been there a couple of times for beers and dinner and the service has always been pretty consistently good.

This restaurant was recommended to us by a co-worker so we never heard of it before we were invited. I was a very nice place right off the main drag that runs along the water in Alki Beach. Very beach feel. I wish I wore my flip-flops. The service was good although they apparently let most of the wait staff go and then got crushed. Still Stephanie did a good job keeping up. The food was good and very fresh. We had the crab appetizer, Basil and Prosciutto Wrapped Prawns and the Fish and Chips. All very good, hot and fresh. Also, as another reviewer mentioned the Cucumber Mojito was excellent. I had two of them.

Great food! The bread is awesome, the seafood is fantastic, and their mixed green salad.... so good with their house vinaigrette dressing! The service is a little poor so I didn't give it the full 5 stars but other than that, have a wonderful dinner on Alki!

Had a hankering for chowder the other night, and felt like cruising over to west seattle to give it a try. Not a seafood person at all, for some reason I do love clam chowder, and had heard that this is among the best in town. Well, I guess it was ok. Maybe a little too "seasoned" for my liking, kind of lost the clammy and chowdery taste under all the seasonings. We also got the seafood melange, which was good, not great. So it's a rather touristy place which charges rather touristy prices. Meal was $50 for two which seemed about $10-15 too much for what we got. I guess the main comparison is to Ivar's, and not being fan I'd give it to Duke's. Both are basically overpriced and perhaps a bit "overworked" if that makes sense. Simple is best.

I will agree the place is on the petite side. Parking is like a gameshow adventure but again it is a given down by the beach. On the plus side: ~ Happy Hour, I like specific brews like Manny's and Mac&Jacks, prices are pretty good. Very nice flat screen HD t.v. The bar area is itty bitty. I was up on the deck one time and they said I could not have Happy Hour prices-WTF?? ~ Mixed drinks do the job, maybe eat some bread to soak it up before driving. Try anything served in a beer glass size and it will blow you away, the mixed drinks are very good. ~ Steamers...wow, beer broth with hunks of roasted garlic, it is a clam lovers dish but it is a soup too. ~Clam chowder, good but be careful it is very expensive for a small cup, like $7. ~ Food, very good, price is not something I usually think about if it is good food, they must know they are charging a bit too much but they have to pay the rent for being at the beach I guess. They have large fancy fish dishes, sandwishes, burger, fish and chips, a little of everything. A wide variety of food but nothing really is unique. Fish and chips are up to $16.99 now. The Spinach Salad in the dinner size is very good and you can add chicken on top. This is not a place to order pasta, just pass. ~ The Beach, I am into views, this is the center of attention on Alki ~ Price... hmmmm, I suppose slightly high for Seattle waterfront dining. It is odd the decor and the atmosphere tries to come off casual and fun but the prices are more like an upscale place. I do know they give away a lot of coupons in mailers and if you join their "email club". My best advice is to unfortunately go with a coupon. Or go at Happy Hour. ~Age, If you are not a bar person this is a nice dinner place, the average age seemed to be 55, but I do see a table with couples and kids at it occasionally. ~Maybe they should update/remodel soon. Looks too ordinary for the cost.

Duke's gave Alki what Salty's didn't: Good food at a fair price. Duke's is good for young or older patrons. The food is basic fare done well.

Yum yum yum chowder. something extra about it. the roof deck is super cute and gets awesome sun. The salads were huge. I had a half portion of the blackened salmon cobb and the salmon was soooo big. i would definitely hang out here if i lived in Seattle

    (4)
  • Jesse R.

I'm not a huge seafood fan so I generally order something "other than" but it's good every single time, and the happy hour later at night is laid back. They send me a coupon for a free meal on my birthday.

We tried almost every chowder. The original is the best. You also need to top it off with a Jack and Dr Pepper.

First time to Duke's and it did not disappoint. The Award Winning Chowder is excellent. Hearty and creamy; a little on the salty side for me. It was good nonetheless. The seating in this location is a tight fit, but it adds to the atmosphere one could argue. The Mac & Jack Fish & Chips aren't bad. All in all it's a good seafood place if that's what you're in the mood for.

  • Erin W.

Eh, great chowder, but the rest of the food is pretty mediocre and overpriced. Service can be spotty. If I'm really craving chowder I'll stop in and take in the view, but otherwise I'm over Duke's.

i try not to give 1's but this place deserves it. i brought my family here from new york expecting a good lunch, because i came here before by myself and had some excellent chowder in a bread bowl. however, i don't know if my server was racist or what because we were asian, but we didn't get served. a table for 6, no service? we saw our server mingling with all the guests around us, which happened to be white, and we never got water service or anything. we had to flag down a busser to pour us water and take our order. because of this experience the server got a 1 cent tip from me, an insult. because of that experience, i will never go back to that dukes or any other of it's locations and the friends and family that i told won't be going there either.

If you are looking for a comfortable, cozy, and delicious dining experience, this is the place to go. It is awesome on those wet, chilly fall evenings. Duke's on Alki not only offers great seafood but a really nice atmosphere. The waitstaff are friendly and their signature drink the Strawberry Lemon Drop is to DIE for! If you go to their website, you can sign up for their email list and get a buy one get one free coupon! They can be a bit pricey so this is the way to go!

Overpriced, no parking, and average food. There are much better places on Alki.

The clam chowder was amazing at Duke's. I wish I ordered a bowl instead of just a cup. I tried the fish and chips and it was pretty good, but the halibut and chips was definitely better IMHO. I didn't get a chance to sit at the terrace on the 2nd floor but it seemed like a great place to hang out and have drinks in the sun during the summer.

  • Lil W.

Honestly, just very mediocre - sometimes bad - food. There is no reason to ever go here. Ever. It's overpriced, bad decor, corporate-fake service. Even the award winning chowder tastes like it is thickened with something, tastes like it is out of a can. Don't do it.

Seattle has thee best Happy Hour deals in the whole northwest! Come on, Sonoma County, lets get hopping! Not only does this place have amazing views of the Sound, but the menu and the cocktails were so good. Our bartender was Paige, and she was super nice and helpful. The cucumber mojito was out of this world! The weather was great, the bar was full but not overly packed. Such a great deal! Can't wait to come back up north for a visit and eat and drink here again.

Happened to be walking by visiting Seattle and stopped here for lunch. Not very busy during the week which was nice because they have a finite number of tables by the window. The day I was there was rainy and overcast, but I can imagine the view on a clear day would be awesome! The staff was super friendly and everything came out really quick. After reading reviews I was torn between fish and chips and clam chowder, luckily theres something on the menu that has a bit of both, perfect! So order than and get the best of both worlds. Also the beer on happy hour was decent. Definitely worth a trip over there.

Not so much. Alki Beach is a place where I grew up for 13 years, right on Beach Drive, and I have fond memories of the area...my father tells me of stories of Alki from the 1950's, and it's always fun to look and see how much has changed... All those new condo's? They were all old houses. One by one, beginning in the 1980's, developers started offering 1M for each home, and one by one, my friend's parent's started taking those offers and moved to the eastside. That little statue of liberty? My dad's elementary school, in 1952, placed a now forgotten time capsule in there. Anyway, on a lunch date with my mom, we drove past all the restaurants, deciding on Duke's. Because we weren't that hungry, we simply ordered: 2 coffees 2 clam chowders $30.00 The view was excellent, the service was excellent, but I was a bit surprised when the bill was $30.00. I know it's not fast food, but really? The clam chowder wasn't even warm, I was honestly suprised at how bad it tasted. I've had canned chowder from Ivar's that is better. Coffee was good. Sorry, but it's just not worth it to me. Because I was in a rush, we decided to just pay and leave. Pass.

not good food. Watch the kitchen, and the servers handeling the bread...still hungry? look at the floor, and feel under your table....??? Find dukes to be pricey and the food very boring...i cant get over the lack of sanitary practices.....

Terrific happy hour! I got the $6 Bloody Mary, which comes garnished with two shrimp(!), a spear of pickled asparagus, and an olive. It's like a mini meal. The drink itself was delicious--plenty of horseradish and Tabasco. I'm also a big fan of their calamari. They're not those greasy, rubbery rings you see everywhere else. They were fat sticks of tender, moist, delicious squid! And the aioli style dipping sauces were both amazing. The steamed clams were good as well. The one thing we didn't like was the sauteed shrimp in garlic wine sauce, which had way too much thyme in it.

  • Chee R.

Food is always great here, but the service is so so. The waitress was so rude, we had to relocate our table and she was so rude and abrupt about it, and when she said "i have new table for you" i didn't say anything and she muttered "OR NOT" so.so .

    (2)
  • Will L.

Mmmm... start off with steamed clams, and dip your sourdough bread in the sauce. Follow it with a bowl of chowder, and the stuffed salmon. Wash it down with a Mac n' Jacks. Mix that up with my favorite view in Seattle: looking out over the Sound at the Olympics. Top it off with S'Mores at your table on a chilly evening in late summer on the upstairs deck, and you got yourself a perfect Seattle dining experience. I always get great service, and I never pay too much.

My favorite happy hour in West Seattle! I love bringing friends here. They are always impressed by the view and the can't go wrong happy hour menu. I would even go so far as to say the "grapefruit nirvana" is my favorite cocktail anywhere. I usually sit at the bar so I can't say much about service but the bartenders keep the drinks coming!

  • Brian B.

Been here once and the food was pretty good. I had a crab chowder and half sandwich. The sandwich was great but the chowder was just okay, perhaps due to excessive expectations. My friend's fish tacos were amazing though. I will definitely go back once I have tried a few more places.

We stopped by at Dukes this evening because we heard their happy hour was a good one. I have to say we were disappointed in the value of servings you get for the price. For a basic example: I ordered a simple caesar salad for $6 and got this small (8") plate of crudely chopped romaine with a couple of croutons and a half sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. They call that good, I call that skimping to make a buck. The well drinks and wine are no real value either, just a buck off. My date got the steamers and that was somewhat better but, still, the size was reduced beyond the price/value point. Dukes Happy Hour is expensive for what you get I don't know why they bother having one. It's better to go full fare and get a full plate of their food for a couple of bucks more. Their food can be pretty good - not reliably - but good just the same. Their fish and chips are ok, little greasy but filling. There are plenty of places to go for Happy Hour in Seattle and elsewhere with a real Happy Hour value. Duke's is not one of them. They could take a lesson from the Firehouse in Ballard and HG Bistro in Puyallup of all places. Not likely they will, but one could hope. I like Duke's for dinner but I won't go back for happy hour.

Went up to visit my girlfriend in Seattle a few weeks ago. Had mostly rain, but was fortunate enough to get two sunny days. On our first sunny day we went down to Alki Beach and hung out on the sand for a while. We decided on eating lunch at Duke's. I got their BBQ bacon burger, fries, a cup of their clam chowder and a micro brew ale. We decided to sit in the outside patio in order to enjoy the sun. The food was great and service was good. Their clam chowder was deserving of it being in their official name. Food was decently priced and I will definitely come back next time im in Seattle.

A great place to have dinner after enjoying the great city lights views from a walk along Alki Beach. Don't forget to check out the lighthouse and statue of liberty on your walk. The service is very good with good sized portions. The fish and chips, and chowder are very flavorful. My gf enjoyed the Dungeness crab melt. The view of Alki beach is amazing from the windows.

Our server was very nice but completely overworked. We sat upstairs outside and he has 12 tables. They are all packed in so it is hard to get around up there. He did the best he could with what he was given. On 3 occasions we had a food runner come up to our table and try to drop off other tables food off to us. Are their tables not numbered? Food-we got fish tacos and a burger. The tacos we tolerable. Very small amount of fish but edible. The burger was terrible. McDonalds is better. It tasted like it came straight from the freezer and was cooked on a flattop with 2 month old grease. I love a good burger but I couldnt even eat 1/2 of it. Fries were good though and the drinks were good. I will go back...for the view and drinks.

4 stars for the location on a beautiful day. Its so nice and relaxing to eat while watching the boats come and go! The food is good too. Very standard (you know what you're going to get), generous portions and filling.

First off - I'm a regular. I have happy hour here ATLEAST weekly in the summers. IF NOT MORE. My girlfriends and I LOVE Scott the bartender. He makes THE BEST snake bites, so you should probably order one the next time you're in. They also make a bloody mary that's a MEAL, so on my more alcoholic days, I'll just have one of those for lunch. They come with two chilled shrimp, lime, greenbean, oilive, and they are the perfect thickness and spice. The servers are extremely friendly and fun. We've gotten to know most of them from coming in so often, which makes for a great experience. In the summers score a seat upstairs at the bar. The open windows make for a refreshing breeze and a gorgeous view. If you're looking to have dinner, grab a seat out on the balcony patio. Order their Mahi Mahi fish tacos, and split it with a friend. They are HUGE. I always sub out the tortilla chips for sweet potato fries, as they don't charge you for it, and their fries rock my world. If you're just sticking with the $4.99 happy hour menu from 3-6 or after 9, I suggest the tuna wasabi quesadilla. It's my staple. On a summer day, I'll usually have the steamed clams with the yummy sour dough bread. This happy hour meal is perfect with a glass of wine in the afternoon. Anyway, you'll probably see me there throughout this coming summer!

Dukes is a nice place to go when you are with just a couple friends. It is not good for large groups. It is small, and can get really crowded. The food is good. I hear the chowder is excellent, but I can not have any because of an allergy.

    (4)
  • Denise V.

It's ok. Not horrible, not super awesome. Just OK. I'd like it more if it was a tad cheaper. I'm not a fan of the chowder - too much dill for me. Couldn't even finish a small cup of it. But nice location and love the bread.

We went to Duke's on Alki for my husband's birthday dinner. It was a Monday, so we didn't think we needed reservations. We put our name on the waiting list and watched as multiple other parties (who also didn't have reservations) get seated before us. When I inquired with the hostess, she said she had forgotten about us because she hadn't actually written our name down on the list. There were 2 hostesses and, clearly, they weren't communicating effectively! When we were finally seated we sat right by the window behind the front desk. That would have been wonderful, except that I was blinded by the setting sun. And, when I say blinded, I mean painfully blinded! Duke's has no blinds on these windows and I literally had to keep my menu and hold it in front of my eyes for nearly 45 minutes until the sun finally went behind the Olympics. Alki Café has blinds that reduce the glare while still allowing customers to enjoy the view. It would be easy and relatively inexpensive for Duke's to add these blinds for their customers comfort, but when I complained to the waitress she mentioned that she and other wait staff have been requesting blinds for years to no avail. So, it's not as if the owner/manager doesn't know about this issue. We enjoyed the food and the service was fine, but the fiasco at the front desk and the pain of the blinding sun angered me to the point that it will be a long time until I return to Duke's.

So one helpful aspect to this place getting high rating is that I live down the street and it is an easy walk. Even though I eat here often I do not find the menu boring. Because I'm an aquatarian it is one of the places where I actually have many options. For meat lovers I do, however, recommend the steak salad. The meat is typically cooked perfectly and the salad is fantastic. They do also have a great happy hour 3-6 and 10-close that includes most of the appetizers. Only bad thing, no HH on deck and deck is the bar so no kids. Amazing views, fanastic mixed drinks (Grapefruit Nirvana is my new favorite) and a great variety of food. I do find they sometimes are not prepared for the rush crowds, especially at the beginning of summer but still enjoy myself and remember what it was like to be a waitress and thank my lucky stars I'm the patron now. If you do not have option to sit on the deck the upstairs bar also has a great view and is often cooler in temperature than the outside seating.

    (4)
  • Steve P.

Overpriced mediocre food and bartenders that fail at making mixed drinks. The saddest part of all this is the mediocrity even extends to the chowder. If you feel like people watching, this might be the place for you, otherwise avoid.

  • Tasha M.

I'm not a fan of the happy hour in the bar area only rule; it makes me... not so happy. The bar space is tiny and usually packed, but if you can find a spot to squeeze in somewhere, I suppose it's not that bad. The drinks are good and the food is tasty, but plan on spending double if you don't snag a bar stool. Love the cucumber mojito, hate the happy hour set-up.

This W Seattle location is seated right across from Alki beach. Went here with friends for a late dinner, and were seated on the upper outdoor deck. If you like people watching, THIS is the place to be. Plenty of street traffic, fellow diners, and beach goers to keep your curiosity occupied. You might need your shades during dinner, but the view of the sun setting on the glittering Sound is totally worth it. Two of my friends ordered variations of Duke's famous chowder, and my other friend and I both ordered the special, a grilled salmon sandwich. The whole wheat bread was a welcome healthy touch, and the lemon aioli added some zing, but overall I don't think it was worth the $16.99 I paid for it, (even with the amazing sweet potato fries). The food is a little pricey for dinner post day-at-the-beach, but their chowder is the best... so make it a summer treat to yourself, but only if you're going to eat outside and soak up the view.

Hopefully times have changed, but a couple of years ago my girlfriend got a to go order from there (Cesars salad + Clam chowder). The salad was average at best. The big issue was the waitress who was slow and very rude, who made it quite apparent she would rather do anything else besides help us. She ened the transaction with snotty remarks about how we didn't tip on a take out order. I have never witnessed such a lack of professionalism before. From that incident on, I refuse to give this place my business.

  • Paige F.

Epic Fail today! Ordered blackened salmon salad, and a vodka tonic with extra lime. What I received after waiting for a really long time... a flat vodka tonic with extra lemon. No biggie...just reorder the drink. Then the food comes. In no way did I order the half salad, but that is what I received. My husband ordered the same salad and he received the full order. Okay? My salad was pretty mediocre. The salmon was good and that is about it. The bacon on it tasted like it had been sitting in the fridge for 2 days...ummmm gross! How does one mess up bacon? THEN to top it off. The server...sensing that we might be a Little annoyed says " hey we are giving away free cookies today, would you guys like some"? Us..."sure" might as well get a free cookie out of the deal....and I'm not even kidding....it came with a damn hair in it!!! All I can do really is laugh because I could not believe what was happening. Dukes.....you are dead to me.....sorry.

Feels a bit "chain-y," but convenient and reliably tasty. perfect spot for non-dates. i took a friend who had recently moved here from alaska, and he really loved the fish tacos. i always spring for the chowder that has bourbon and crab in it. service is never terrible, but never amazing either. great view, and good outdoor option in warmer months.

Except for the boomin' cars with the boomin' systems cruising by, this is a great place to sit outside and people/scenery watch. Big salads, lots of food for the money and a nice staff. Directly across from Alki beach with 2 outdoor eating areas - the epitome of summer in Seattle.

Great place to hang out on a sunny Seattle day. They have a great roof top seating area as well as outside seating downstairs. I really like their food, it's always fresh and tasty. My favorite are the crab stuffed prawns and the steamers. The regular menu is a bit pricey, but remember you're also paying for the great view. if you're looking for something a little less pricey, they've got a great HH menu from 3-6 and 9-close everyday with items like steamers, coconut prawns, fish tacos and burgers, but only in the bar, no outdoor seating.

  • Sovannary S.

Absolutely love this place. I come here with my girls all the time to chow down on the cheap food and sip the yummy pomikazes! The best days to go here are sunny days, the view is AMAZING from their outside patio. The only thing is, I wish there were more seats out there, it is VERY popluar when the suns out!

service was good in here, and i liked the ambience. the fresh sourdough bread that we got on the table was warm and delicious. i opted for a n'awlins prawn sandwich on molasses bread that came with sweet potato fries. the fries were good. the sandwich was okay, but i think it could have been more flavourful. my boyfriend had the tacos and enjoyed them. the views were great! what let this place down the most is the price - it really did seem pretty overpriced for what was on offer. if it offered a bit more value for money, then i would for sure give it a 4 star rating.

3 1/2 Stars Pros: *Cucumber Mojito *relatively quick service *outdoor seating with a great view of Alki *good-sized portions *two happy hours, seven days a week *"new lower prices" (?) Cons: *Our host initially looked at us like we didn't quite belong there. The rest of the group had just gotten back from a motorcycle trip up to Snoqualmie and were therefore a little "mussed." Or maybe it was my bright pink leopard print tattoo half-sleeve, but regardless - we're no bums. *Happy hour only in the little tiny bar area (as in, even if you are at the table on the other side of the divider you will NOT be able to partake in happy hour. If you're with a group larger than 5 people, you won't *fit* in the bar area. Our server suggested we speak to the manager about it, but we just wanted to have a decent sit-down meal). *Inconsistent/overseasoned chowder (one person in the group got too much parsley, another too much basil [they offer multiple types of chowder]). I will give them another try, as the food did look delicious (unfortunately I had just eaten lunch with the Yelpers before I met up with the group that went to Duke's), but next time maybe I *will* speak to the manager about the HH restrictions.

We showed up at 12:45 and were seated immediately. It was busy but not jam packed. The staff was pleasent. I got a coke and 4 piece fish and chips. The bill was $20.02, a little pricey if you ask me. The quality was fine but I left hungry, you'd think they could throw a few more fries on the plate for that price.

    (3)
  • Jake R.

The food and the scenery was great, our server however was not. We didn't actually get to sit outside, too many people in our group, but it looked really nice through the window and the weather was beautiful outside. It was disappointing that we couldn't get Happy Hour prices at our table since it wasn't in the ridiculously small bar area. We pleaded with our server to give us a break but he insisted that it was beyond his control and there was nothing he could do. He even got a bit snippy and wanted us to talk to the manager but we were hungry, thirsty and not in the mood to get into it. Though it did give us something to talk about, sort of an ice breaker since most of us were meeting each other for the first time. I had the dangerously "Killer" prawns and the Dungeness crab & Bourbon chowder. The prawns were good but the sauce was a bit heavy and had a tad too much garlic for my tastes. The chowder was amazing, I only wish the $6.99 tea cup size I received was larger. Overall the place was not bad, not great but not a total loss. I would like to go back with a smaller group, maybe just two people this time. ;) Then we could sit outside and enjoy the view or possibly sit at the bar and take advantage of the HH menu!

We heard this was a good place on Alki beach to have a quick meal. From the get go our server was not interested and took forever to even come to our table. It was only moderately crowded, a lot of the crowd was watching the University of Washington try to upset BYU in collegiate football on their beautiful flat screen televisions. By the time we got our food we went through two drinks each and two baskets of bread. The food was good enough, I'm not a foodie snoodie. I had the bleu cheeseburger which was a typical burger, nothing special. At the end of the meal our server said that she was being sent home and should she send another one over or can we settle up on the check. HUH? That was strange, but based on her service, maybe management noticed it too.

Duke's is one of our West Seattle favorites! The staff is always extremely nice, the service always good. If you have a chance to partake in one of their wine or beer pairing dinners, its a must! They are so extremely accommodating to us every time we go in. We attended one of their special events that had a set menu and my husband didn't like a few of the items, and without hesitation they prepared a separate menu just for him, it was amazing. They also have a fairly killer happy hour. I think every other restaurant should take a course in customer service from Dukes. They never disappoint!

Great salmon chowder and macadamean halibut was to die for. Glad i went!!! this was the chowder house off alki beach. was a great way to end a lovely sunset.

A happy hour mojito, caesar salad, and a yellowfin tuna/wasabi quesadilla at Dukes leaves me a happy girl! Not what I would expect from a chowder house, but totally hits the spot every time :)

Where else can you sit across the beach at an outdoor restaurant on a sunny day in Seattle? This place (if you sit on the deck) reminds me of being on vacation. And that's definitely a good thing.

Happy hour is great, if you somehow manage to squeeze into the tiny, tiny bar and find yourself a seat. Smallest bar I've ever seen. A micro-bar, really. So although disappointed that we couldn't partake in hh my gf and I were happy with where we ended up by the window, watching the sunset on a fantastically sunny Seattle day. We split the Killer prawns and the steamed clams and each had a bowl of chowder. The praws and clams came out with more bread than anything else - long after we had bested the killer prawns, we were still eating the saucy "bread steak" that had come out with them. I'm not a bread hater, but I do wish we had had more prawns for the price we paid. That's really my only complaint about Duke's - the price point seems off a bit. We had some fun with our server who reminded me of a pirate, actually, but a very conscientious and polite pirate. Will probably return for happy hour, but probably not again for full on dinner.

Great dijon salmon with crab stuffed shrimp. Delicious red wine. Great beach sunset view on the 2nd floor deck. Reasonable ability to find street parking.

We brought friends here who were visiting from the midwest, not really knowing what to expect. We chose it based on location and view, and the fact that they take reservations. It was crowded, so the reservations were a big help! We were seated on the upstairs terrace right away. The location and view alone are worth a visit. It was sunset, and the weather was perfect. If you go, definitely try to sit upstairs on the terrace! Service was very friendly and knowledgeable, if perhaps a little slow. The manager was very visible, and spoke to us at length near the end of our meal. Very warm and welcoming. I had the chowder fleet, with a taste of all 5 chowders. This is a smart choice....they are all different and really delicious. It made for a great starter. We also had fried clam strips and calamari strips, both of which were quite good. The portions were a bit small, so it was tough to share among the four of us. The mixed grill was great. Grilled shrimp and scallops on a skewer, with a crab cake, potatoes, and sugar snap peas. It was fantastic....cooked perfectly, with a great sauce. The crab cake was outstanding. The thai halibut was also good...a large portion, with delicious rice and a great sauce. The fish and chips (cod) were good, although nothing special. For dessert we had a wonderful marionberry pie, some great ice creams, and a root beer float. All were really delicious. I didn't find the prices to be high so I'm not sure why that gets so many comments. For four guys, with several drinks (2 each), appetizers, entrees and desserts it was $200. That's pretty damn reasonable for Seattle! As the sun went down, they lit their tall gas heaters which helped fight off the chill, and made for a really beautiful setting. I will definitely come back!

What is this place. It's like Salty's on Alki, sans the entire geriatric population of Seattle, and, you know... decent food. I got some lobster chowder, which was some oversalted, congealed nonsense. I also got a $14 burger, which I may have gladly asked the chef to spit on to moisten. Yet another restaurant in Seattle charging exorbitant money for food that isn't just mediocre, it's actually literally garbage. The burger: I actually went online to educate myself about avocados, because I was unaware there was a variety that has leprosy. This is the variety I was served on my burger. Crunchy, necrotic, ethylene room ripened avocado. Guys. It's September. They're literally in season RIGHT NOW. You have to make a legitimate effort to actually get avocados in that bad of shape. The bacon on the burger. Nice. You did bacon good. But that's because bacon is already good, you just have to put it on something. The patty: What the actual... NHL special, burnt from edge to core, and a nice hockey puck consistency. The fries: Good job. Really. They were fried potatoes. I don't think I've ever had a shitty fry. Chowder. You're called a chowder house. I don't even have words. A dumptruck of butter and salt can only pick up around 90% of the slack you dropped on this one. You have to do at least 10% of a good job in order for fat and salt to make up for the fumble you call chowder. Jeeze guys. I get that you get to be in business because of the large amount of foot traffic on Alki beach. But maybe, perhaps, make an effort.

I took a doctor friend of mine here because Fred hutch gave us a discount. It is a bit on the pricy end even with the small discount but the clam chowder was so gooood! I hope she enjoyed herself, I could not justify going to daniel's for lunch so we kinda went here instead. Restaurants close to the hutch are a bit outside of my price range but it's ok, since it's not all the time! My Personal Rating Key One star: the food was bad and I had a negative experience. Two star: I had a more negative experience and would not come here again but the food was good so I may. Three store: everything is good except one thing. Example-the food is good, the price is more reasonable but the atmosphere is lacking class. These are sometimes my go to more than four stars because I usually care about price more than I do about atmosphere. Four stars: Everything is great, food, experience but the price may be on the upper end. I would not recommend this first to Obama unless he didn't like my five stars. Five stars: I would recommend this to Obama. The price may be on he upper end.

My mom and I came here for happy hour and their happy hour menu was great!! We ordered the mussels, clam strip, calamari, and the clam chowder! The sauce for the mussels was impeccable, garlicky tomato cream sauce. My mom and I also ordered the Orange margarita and the Moscow mule which was absolutely delicious! Not too sweet, that's how we like it! The sour dough was to die for. I didn't really like the calamari steaks, they were big pieces but they weren't crispy like usual calamari! Other then that, would definitely come back for happy hour!

Huge fan of the food here. The chowder is the best I've ever had. Only the famous original one though. They make 5 different kinds and you can get samples of each one (not a fan at all of their other 4 chowders and advise to sticking to their famous original). All their chowders can be served in a freshly made sourdough bread bowl and the bread is good! You even get some before your meal comes no matter what you get. The sweet potato fries... Out of this world!! All their food is great quality an fresh. They have out door sidewalk seating and even a roof top deck seating. Which is great because you are a few feet from the beach and it's a beautiful unobstructed view. Inside on the first floor is a bit small and cramped for my style (unlike their south lake union location that has a wonderful inside) - but the wait staff is great and patient so it makes up for that.

I had a horrible "un tossed salad" which consisted of three dried out scallops and shrimps over something that tasted like an old bag chop salad from Safeway with olive oil and misc herb ends. Also had a bowl of the standard chowder and struggled to taste or find anything that remotely resembled clams. The complimentary sourdough was the only saving grace.

Overdue Review: August 2011 - J & I were visiting friends JS and OM (who is a SF transplant). After salsa on Alki beach (organized by friends of JS & OM) and running on the beach (J), we were quite hungry and decided to check out Duke's. Ordered the following: Basket of Fries $4 Blue Moon beer $5 1.5 Fish and Chips combo $16.30 Food was ok albeit salty. Beer good. Atmosphere jovial. Not a destination place, but the proximity to the beach and the prompt, friendly service are two positives.

Decent food but overpriced for a restaurant that is not upscale seafood. I'd recommend just going for happy hour. My favorite happy hour item has got to be the halibut quesadilla. The burgers are not bad either - also on happy hour and reasonably priced. Location of course is a perfection, right on the Alki beach strip. Can't say it's the best place on the strip but like I said, great stop on the beach for happy hour!

My first time visiting here was also my first visit to Alki beach since moving here last fall! It was the Monday after Valentines Day and the weather was perfect. I stopped in for happy hour, and I could not have been more pleased. I had some yummy chowder, some tasty mussels, and a few delicious blood orange margaritas. Yum! The best part was the sunset right outside the door. A lady at the bar kept running outside and I asked her what she was doing. She was taking pictures of the sunset and how the colors kept changing. It was beautiful so I followed her a few times, such a beautiful day! That alone makes this place awesome, but the great food and drinks don't hurt!

Service: terrific, always helpful and upbeat Food: some real gems here Atmosphere: Fun vibe, boardwalk type scene Cleanliness: very good Noise: loud but pleasant After our first meal we were ready to give it five stars. Cold beers, excellent Arnold Palmer, fantastic crab with shrimp gnocchi, perfect fish 'n chips and chowder. Our second meal was similarly memorable. Wonderful polenta with scallops. Portion size of the gnocchi a bit less even though it was dinner vs. lunch on our first visit. On the third occasion we discovered why other reviewers don't seem to give more than an average 3.5 stars. Our blueberry salmon dish came out much overcooked. Flavor profile seemed bizarre and not very pleasing. Substituted for gnocchi which went from 6 to 4 to 3 shrimp. Mentioned it to the manager who insisted it's supposed to come with just three prawns. She didn't seem to know if they were fresh water shrimp. According to Wikipedia, prawn can be shrimp that are so big there are 15 or fewer to the pound. The ones served here don't seem to make it size wise. My caesar blue cheese salad came sans sauce and my lobster chowder, although delicious, was only served lukewarm at best. I wish I could wholeheartedly recommend Duke's because of their commitment to sustainable and wild seafood and grassfed meat. In any case, I can totally recommend it for a fun vibe, a cold Mac & Jack's and awesome fish 'n chips. Finding parking maybe challenging but there does seem to be good turnover. Oh, and there's apparently no difference in portion size and price between lunch and dinner.

My dad and I hungrily walked the strip of food/drink options twice along Alki (in search of non-fried seafood) before settling on Duke's. Good choice us! We both had the chowders (there are options!) - my dad sampled two and I had the North by Northwest. They were so good!! Not too watery, not too chunky (that's how I categorize my chowders). Then we split the Thai Ginger Halibut (dinner special of the day) and again were super happy about the choice. The cream (or as I thought of it, what-is-this-peanut-sauce-goodness) was light but tasty and completed the fish, and the fish wasn't over or underdone. The WA white wine that I had with my meal certainly didn't disappoint either. We were very pleased with our meal and I will definitely be coming back again. Atmosphere and all that other stuff: The waitress wasn't superb (we couldn't be friends), and took her time getting us bread and other things (except the check - that flew over in a matter of seconds) and since it *could* be a sports place if it wanted to be (there are 3 huge TV's), it was a little loud. But since we were too busy eating their delicious food, it wasn't a big deal.

My husband and I were looking for a place to have our wedding rehearsal dinner in West Seattle, but we were having a hard time finding a restaurant with a private space to accommodate our party of approximately 30 people. We settled on Duke's on Alki because it was just down the road from our venue and would be easy for our friends and family to go between the two places. We had the rehearsal dinner in the upstairs dining area (which they call "semi-private" because it shares the floor with the outdoor patio). Everything, from the time we started planning with Greg Green (their General Manager), to the dinner itself, went smoothly. Greg was easy to communicate with from the start, responded to emails promptly, listened to our plans and helped us create a great menu for our wedding party. The servers at the rehearsal dinner (wish I could remember their names!) were friendly, prompt, and did a great job of navigating their way around the various tiny children running around the tables during dinner. As a bride, the night before the wedding can be a stressful time, but this dinner turned out to be one less thing I had to worry about. Next time you're looking to book a large party, contact Greg Green at Duke's. He will take great care of you.

Get the crab cake. It makes my heart stop beating when I think about how delicious crabcake was at this place I ordered a bunch of other stuff and it was all really good but I am 2000 miles away from that crabcake. I will dream about this crabcake until I'm probably dead.

Sit at the upstairs bar looking out at the beach. I usually order the mixed grill which is small in portion but big in flavor. Excellent clam chowder and bloody marys too. Join the birthday club which is good for deals here and at the Lake Union location.

I don't know quite how to write a review for Duke's so I've been hesitant to do so over the years. I've been eating here for 15 years- my husband and I had our second date ever here- ten years ago. We celebrate nearly every special occasion here, especially when it has to do with being a couple. And we drive from Everett to do so. The service is always awesome and when they don't get it quite right they fix it. I wrote a love letter to Duke about our server once and to thank us for our comments, they sent us two free appetizers. All of the food is good. All of the seafood is wild caught and sustainable. All of their products are high quality and their servers have been trained to provide excellent customer service. The views are amazing, the ambiance is nice (unless you get a table by the kitchen- ugh) and Duke's really wants you to enjoy everything about dining there. My only complaint is when they don't have scallops on the menu. The scallops polenta is truly an amazing dish and my heart cries when they take it off the menu. Good old Duke's. So reliable. So tasty. So friendly.

Cute place... waited forever for our waitress... then again for our drinks. Berry lemon drop was delicious once it arrived. Went to the restroom and someone had thrown up in the sink. Brother burger was wrong...ignored by waitress for check. But... clam chowder bowl was best ever... thats why they get one star.

I love Duke's! Had a lovely time with dinner here, and the e-mail coupons I get from being on Duke's list keep me coming back for more. We came here for my birthday and got half-off a bottle of wine. We really like the food here! By far the best deal is the three-course dinner where you get a bowl of chowder, a starter salad, and an entree all for $24! It's what we get every time and we never regret it. Fun place that was fun for a big group for my birthday on the beach!

I showed up. Stood there for awhile as both waiters passed me by. I was like "oh wow." They both looked at me confused as if wondering "what could this lady possibly want?!" I don't know what about me screams not a paying customer; maybe it's because I'm Asian or maybe it's because I'm a girl or perhaps it's the ponytail but they obviously did not want the business so I went to Christo's next door and was treated like a valued customer. Try Christo's awesome seafood risotto. It is to die for!

Meh! We stopped for lunch on a weekday, 3 adults and a child. I was so hopeful looking at the menu. It took a while to get our drinks; I should have taken that as a sign. We ordered and some lovely sourdough bread arrived. We waited. Food arrived at two tables seated after us. We waited. Our food finally arrived and it frankly wasn't worth the wait. The chowder was cold, the salad greens were drenched in dressing and quite wilted, the chicken was a very poor quality. I left hungry...

These guys are little on the pricier side, but their food is pretty good. They also have outdoor seating, which is amazing during a nice summer evening. The view of the sunset over the Olympics is absolutely breathtaking. The service was also pretty good. I'd give them 4 stars, but their old fashioned was terrible. It had way, WAY too much ice. By the time it got to our table it was basically water--possibly with a splash of bourbon? If you like bourbon, you're better off ordering whiskey neat (since they would probably over-ice if you order on the rocks).

It gets 3 stars for the best calamari ever and a great view. It doesn't get more stars because otherwise it was not fantastic. I was really disappointed with the New England clam chowder which does not taste anything like New England clam chowder (I grew up in New England) and what the heck is with putting bacon in clam chowder! Nowhere in Maine, Boston, VT, CT, NY did I ever encounter clam chowder with bacon in it. The entire taste of the chowder is overpowered with bacon. I guess that's a Seattle thing to include bacon because so far I've had it everywhere! The service was not really that great either. Go during happy hour. Definitely get the calamari. I'll go back for that.

Visiting from CT. Went on a Wednesday night and wanted some local seafood. Sat in the bar and the service was prompt. Bartender was very nice and answered all our questions. Happy halibut quesadilla was amazing. My first time eating halibut and it was a winner. Being from new England the chowdah was a slam dunk. I had the alaskan weathervane scallop special with polenta. Very good. The food was flavorful and fresh and perfect portions. Also the cucumber mojiti was refreshing and yum. Sad we won't have time to go back this trip!

This is the only place that actually is consistent in cooking my burgers to order. I like them medium rare and have eaten at 520 Grill in Bellevue, Ruth's Chris steakhouse, and Red Robin. And, each time I have eaten at those places in the last decade - burgers are always overcooked. I am not exaggerating. However, I have visited Dukes in Kent and Alki and each time it comes out medium rare! These chefs know what they are doing. Though, the clam strips were full of sand and grit, ( I had to swallow them whole) I always will return for the burgers. Always and forever.

Honestly, this is the kind of place you take guests from out of town, or if you're having trouble finding something else. It's not that it's bad at all, but there are so many other choices that are better - and much less expensive. I feel like they charge the prices they do simply based on the Duke name. If you've got friends or family visiting from out of town, they probably want to eat somewhere with a water view. Most places with a spectacular water view don't have the best food, so you're paying extra for the view. If you're in Southcenter, go to Joey's -- the view there is a lot better! :P

This is where I bring guests from out-of-town. I have always had really good food here and attentive service. I love the selection of chowders with sourdough bread. Also, their fish and chips are pretty good, and I usually find fish and chips too greasy. The downside of this place can be the other customers. I have been here some evenings and been surrounded by complete douche bags, drunk and obnoxious. The last time I was there a guy was parked in front revving his engine loudly to the delight of squealing drunk women. If that's your thing then, by all means.

Okay so I come here pretty fyrequently. Im new to wa so i enjoy eating out. Had good experiences at dukes except for today. I make a reservation online showed up on time my seat was not avaliable hostess offered to seat me in the sun said I could move when a specific table came free as they were leaving. . when I moved the Mgr came over and yelled at me said I can't do that. The waitress had an attitude towards me as well. . It all made me nervous. Waitress had a hacking flemmy caugh I had to ask her to take my order I had to ask for silverware, water them my salmon was totally under cooked one sided grilled the other was raw! Seriously this was so disappointing. Maybe because I was my myself I was deemed not profitable enough yet I ordered a $25 dinner and had to choke it down. Okay duke sorry but won't be back!

So impressed! I had heard from multiple people that this place was awesome so last week my fiancé and I tried it out and we were very impressed! Hostess was friendly, helpful, made conversation (didn't catch her name but pretty girl with long black hair) and our server was Alex. He was very helpful, answered questions and the view from the patio deck is amazing. Went back for the 2nd time in less than a week today and sat on patio and had server Morgan. She was very helpful, checked on us a few times without being overbearing, and all in all great customer service. Manager on duty (Rick) was very involved & made it very clear he cared about our needs being met while making conversation with me, all while making sure our experience was enjoyable . All in all, very impressed. I would give over 5 starts if I could! Clean, polite staff, prompt service, and great happy hour! Will definitely recommend and return!

Tired a triple dinghy of the chowder for ~$10. Would definitely recommend this if you're open to trying a few different chowders. Maybe ~4oz for each boat? The Champ - 5/5. The award wining clam chowder and I can definitely see why! Very creamy, with lots of herbs and lots of clams. Would recommend that everybody coming here give this one a try. Lobster Mobster - 3/5. Quite tasty, not quite as creamy as the champ, but is still very flavorful. Would say that this is A-OK and didn't disappoint at all. North by Northwest - 2/5. Eh. This was actually a surprise for me. I wasn't sure what to expect (never had Cioppino style), but it didn't disappoint by any means - just didn't hit the spot for a creamy chowder that I was looking for.

Great food and service on a busy sunny Sunday (we did make reservations ahead of time). Beautiful view and the waitress was great. It was busy but they kept our table well serviced. Halibut and prawns were delicious, as was the housemade coleslaw. And decent prices on wine - 6 or 9 oz pour option is a great touch.

My ex-husband and I *always* ate here when we lived in Seattle (Alki Beach)! They have such a great menu selection, friendly service, and awesome ambience. Especially love dining al fresco during the warmer summer months (right on the water). Anything w/seafood is sure to please!

Overall good experience. Very friendly staff and the view is great! I went there on a sunday after noon with a friend and we wanted to sit outside, but there was a 30 min wait. so we went upstairs to sit at the bar and even tho it wasn't outside we still had a great view of ALKI from the bar upstairs. -Great views -Friendly Staff -Beers ~5$ -Side dishes ~5$ -On a nice day expect to wait about 10-20+ min for an outside table, but you can still get a great view form the upstairs bar -YES I will be coming back We both got a beer and had some appetizers. Prices were $5 for everything. I got the fried clams and my friend got the calamari. Both foods were great! However the Fried Clams were defiantly the best thing we had this day. WAAY better than the calamari. The calamari did come with a side of coleslaw, but this coleslaw was not worth it. GET THE FRIED CLAMS. I will be going back to this place, i enjoyed the view and the food was good and fairly priced.

I had fish and chips and the corn chowder. Both were excellent. The fish was lightly battered with a panko type crust. It was firm and flaky and not greasy at all. I eat fish and chips a lot and I would give this a 9 out of 10. Service was wonderful, everyone was very nice. The manager stopped to ask how we liked everything. I did not care for the coleslaw. It has a Thai peanut flavor to it. However my wife likes Thai food, so she enjoyed it. My wife had the crab melt with lobster chowder. I tried both. I liked the crab melt, but the lobster chowder was too rich for my taste. She liked both. The bill was $30.00 with no drinks, so it was a little spendy but good.

Known for their chowder, which is good considering their name, Duke's also does a pretty good Caesar salad and offers a decent wine list with the surprise of half-off bottle pricing on Monday nights. (Or maybe that was just last night, and just at the Alki location; we were surprised by it, in any event.) They offer five "classic chowders" -- in addition to clam, they have a lobster chowder, a Dungeness crab offering, a northwest seafood chowder done cioppino style, and a Cajun chicken-and-corn chowder. My own preference is the Dungeness crab version, with a nice hearty mix of crab meat, cream, and potatoes, perfect for a chill winter night. Duke's also offers a selection of seafood entrées ranging from fish'n'chips (I think by law that any place which considers itself a seafood restaurant must have fish'n'chips on the menu) to cedar-planked salmon, as well as some non-seafood items like burgers and a couple of steak offerings. Food quality aside, the prices are a bit higher than you'd expect for the casual setting. The touristy angle and the generally nice waterfront locations make this possible, I think; if you're an occasional seafood consumer at best, you'd be better off trying the happy hour here, which in addition to some interesting drink and menu specials offers some of the best people-watching in town.

Seriously, this place named itself "Chowder House" and you would expect it to have impressive chowder at the least! Perhaps it is preference, even at 2nd try the chowder far from "good". It's unnecessary thick and overwhelmingly salty; a weird blend over all. Overall here the food is lackluster and the service is nothing to write home about. Strike two for Duke's Chowder House. =(

My son was visiting from New York he was staying in West Seattle, we went to Dukes it was a beautiful day we wanted to sit outside the waitress said the wait was 30 minutes even though table were open the entire time we had lunch it was extremely disappointing. The chowder was outstanding, the salmon was over cooked which made the lunch terrible.

I went here with my father in law, and a friend, not knowing what to expect. We left here COMPLETELY satisfied, after Maria, our server who was a HOOT, totally gave us the PERFECT recommendations based on what we wanted. Also, they had $3 wines that were surprisingly good! We also thank them for making my 73 year old father in law's birthday a really fun day!!!!! And also, their world class clam chowder, while just a taste of it just went DIRECTLY to your thighs, was actually really good. Who would have thought!! Good choice for a simple, good food, great hang out place.

I'm only giving the extra star because of the large deck and the view. I go to Dukes for one reason only: their (formerly) delicious crab dip. The quality and consistency has gone downhill for years now and finally I must say "no more, I will not be culinarily raped again". The afforementioned crab dip comes in a so-called bread bowl. But upon my last visit I discovered, this bread is no bowl, but a mere platter with a very thin layer of crab concoction on top (it would be impossible to dip anything into it). $14 wasted. Suck it, Duke. *When I typed this review out I kept typing "crap dip" instead of "crab dip". I think that is an accurate typo.

My little family went to Duke's yesterday evening for dinner after enjoying what may be the last of good weather in this area until next summer. Our server was awesome, but the establishment loses a star for our entrees being served late. Fresh sourdough bread was served promptly along with our appetizer (calamari, which I've had better at other places). But, we must have waited at least 30 minutes for our entrees after we had finished our calamari. I understand that it was busy and they're lucky that we weren't starving. Our server (I think his name was Joshua) is awesome for offering a complimentary cup of chowder for my husband as we waited for our food. And, he gave us vouchers for free entrees the next time we decide to have dinner there. They would have gotten all 5 stars if the food wasn't late. I'll definitely go back to see if they can get all 5 stars next time.

This place has terrible service after the sweet young lady with really short hair seats you. My friends and I came in 20mins. before happy hour began but they didn't take our order till about 15mins. after happy hour began on a Wednesday night that wasn't busy at all. When we finally ordered 1-drink it took 15mins. to get to our table, mind you we saw it put on the bar counter 15mins. before it was brought to us. The fish was dry and my potato wedges were cold. Their goat cheese quesadilla was absolutely horrendous and my drinks were all watered down. Staff was sitting around chatting with each other and I saw the bartender drink God-knows-what over other people's drinks that were going out. It was a terrible start to my vacation from Southern California. There was only one person really working and it was the poor hostess. If I could, I would give this place NO STARS because it was THAT BAD.

While the view and area was great I would consider this areas food to be overpriced tourist food with a less than expected quality. The cioppino was good but I've definitely had better and my wife's fish and chips looked like a value basket from a fast food place. Except the price was a lot more. The service by the wait staff was mediocre at best. They forgot requests that we made on several occasions and they came back and would be reminded by something and then tell us they forgot. Forgetting something once ok, twice maybe, but not three times. That's just ridiculous. Overall I would say that when you go to a restaurant with these prices you expect the food to be of a higher quality than it was.

The best BEST crab cake I've ever had anywhere (Maryland and New England included). We split the 8 ounce cherry, marnier salmon which was also delicious. We also got a double dinghy with the crab and the lobster chowder. The crab was nothing special and the lobster was rather sweet which I didn't care for. This was enough food for two (appetizer, entree and double dinghy). Great service and amazing location/view. We will be back for the crab cake!

Holy Seafood! This place is awesome. Super good food and honestly this is probably the best clam chowder I have ever tasted. Service is great and view of the beach is great. We came for the dinner and had the stuffed halibut. Finished it off with some Mac and Jack beer...soooo good. If you are in Seattle definitely try this place. Service was great as well.

I thought this place was pretty good! My friend and I grabbed a spot at the bar on a busy Friday night. Bartender was attentive despite being slammed with drink orders and other bar tops. The chopped salad with scallops and shrimp was to die for. We also shared sweet potato fries and you really can't go wrong with those. Saw a Bill Clinton look alike and loved the dark busy atmosphere inside :)

For Alki, very good food and great service. We arrived about 45 mins before Happy Hour, & ordered a few items ahead of HH prices. I'll just say it is worth it to go during HH - I believe daily 3-6pm. Everything we ordered was very good. I was impressed to see that the HH menu is full of items from the regular menu, not just a few cheap items as many places tend to do. We sat at a booth in the bar area, and the bartender waited on us. He was super attentive, and all the staff members were very friendly and professional. We will definitely be back.

Yay, Yay, and YAY!!! First place I go in Seattle? DUKES! They gave me a wonderful gift for my bday by being in their Club of a choice of four things on the menu. (chowdah, always chowdahhhh!) And, they were really nice to honor it, even tho it had been awhile since my bday. My waitress had an excellent recommend that also saved us money, but got us more tastes of things. I always feel well taken care of at Dukes, and in the summertime - you can't beat the view! Thank you, Duke, and hey thanks for that little video where I can give you feedback, too, I got in my email... :)

Very disappointing experience. Clam chowder had a funky taste. Weirdly over-spiced with something I couldn't identify...maybe a dish soap taste. Almost as if dishes not properly rinsed? Cod fish and chips nothing spectacular. I've had much better at Owl and Thistle in Post Alley and even Ivar's. Bottom line: over-priced, bad experience and not going back. One star is one too many.

From the sourdough bread to the clam chowder and the mussels everything was beyond delicious! The mussels have a nice spice to it. So if you are looking for some spice in your life Mussels at Dukes! I also had the blood orange margarita and also very delicious and strong! I wasn't able to take a picture of my mussels because I devoured them so quickly but my fiancé got the fish and chips and he said they were the best he's had! Service was super friendly and made us feel welcomed! Great place with stellar views!!

***Happy Hour Review Only*** My boyfriend and I went to Duke's for HH the other night. I've always enjoyed the HH at their Tukwila location and with the view on Alki it couldn't get much better, right? From the minute we walked in the service was lacking, especially from the hostess. We finally made our way up the stairs for an outdoor table and we ordered our food. Let me just say that dim lighting does not hide poorly executed food. My Caesar salad was completely overdressed and the tuna in my ahi tuna quesadilla was overcooked -- it had the texture and flavor of chicken breast. The view and the drinks were the only things that didn't disappoint. I've had good food from Duke's before so I wouldn't say no to going back, but I'm in no hurry to do so.

I wasn't really feeling this place. I have been to the Tacoma location a bunch of times when I use to live there. I thought it was really good. And it was super nice and clean inside. I guess since this location is across from the beach it's cool for it to be dirty and kind of run down. I am a vegetarian with a group of fish eaters so I had the veggie burger. It was pretty bland and didn't taste like much. It was also $14.00 UM NO. Our waitress was nice and helped us decide what to order. But after that she never came back and I didn't get a refill on my drink so I drank my husbands drink... I think this place it totally overpriced for what you get and for the condition of the place. Basically you are paying to look at Alki.. which is really pretty. One thing to mention is my husband loved his clam chowder. He said it's the best he has ever had.

One of our picks when we're on the Alki. In a sunny day, it's great if you can get a table on the patio or outside. Also, added benefit is the free wifi - the pass is 'Chowder1'.

After my 7 month journey living in Seattle concludes, I can safely say Duke's Chowder House ranks amongst the best seafood restaurants I've experienced to date. Starting with the sour dough bread delivered piping hot and fresh to the table with butter that melts like magic, you won't be disappointed. On days I know I'm eating at Duke's I run extra miles in advance just so I know I can over indulge on the bread. Seriously, it's the best I've had. On my visits to the restaurants I've tried several entrees: Fish and Chips - are divine. The French fries have the perfect crisp. The fish is flaky and moist when paired with the malt vinegar and tarter sauce. Fish tacos - WOW! I was expecting two small folded tacos the first time I ordered this dish and to my surprise received a taco fit for a king. They are huge, and if you order 1 taco, you probably will do OK. But if you feel like going for the gold, order 2. They come with fresh salsa and chips which make the perfect meal pairing. On my last visit to Duke's we ordered as an appetizer the "dangerously killer prawns" which any jury would have come back quickly and convicted of good taste. The garlic, the peppers and the bread to sop up the juice is out of this world. For an entrée I ordered a mix plate of the crab uncake, prawns and scallops accompanied by new potatoes and asparagus. The plate was great because it allowed balance following the appetizer and the sour dough bread. The potatoes were perfectly cooked with a rosemary herb sauce. The crab uncake was not filled with bread but with succulent crab meat anyone would enjoy. I encourage you to visit the Alki Beach location of Duke's. With a view facing the sound, you not only get to eat wonderful food, you get a gorgeous view as well. The service has always been top notch. On future trips to Seattle, I can assure you Duke's will my seafood sanctuary.

Four of us went there for drinks during the second half of their two-part happy hours. This is not a place for anyone with an appreciation of cocktails. Every single one of their drinks tasted like it had salt mixed in to give a false impression of flavor depth. Their mai-tai like special drink tasted like it was made with Gatorade. Their Old Fashioned was bitter and insipidly sweet. The Bloody Mary came with two good-tasting shrimp but the drink itself was too salty. None of the 8 drinks we had tasted like they even contained alcohol. This place seems to be all hype and the people who rate it highly must all have post decision cognitive dissonance: they bought it now they invent justification for liking it.

We came for my girlfriends birthday lunch and we're very excited! However, we had to wait for 30min, to be served/bread/welcome. People around us were waited upon, and served, but Kaylie (not sure about spelling) and the other waiter nearby flat out forgot about us. Once they finally brought us utensils, one was dirty and had to be returned. I also requested coffee with cream, no sugar - they brought coffee with sugar, no cream. I let them know that I needed cream instead, they apologized, but then never brought cream out. Honestly these things on their own are benign - accidents happen. But to have this many happen in the course of 30 minutes? That's just not acceptable service.

Two separate friends recommended this place, I was in town on business. I'm gluten free so was really excited the chowders were GF and they had a GF menu. Prices were very reasonable and service was prompt and friendly...I will be back.

Some of the best Fish & Chips I have ever had. Very nice welcoming, engaging staff. They will actually try to have a conversation with you! The fish & Chips is the Panko breaded type you really see dominating the Pacific Northwest. This is in comparison to the battered type. They pull it off flawlessly. Big thick pieces of cod and its at a perfect temperature. Sometimes you order this and it burns your mouth hole. it is perfect here. Juicy, crunchy tasty. Fries could be better. Prefer the non coated, seasoned (except with salt) type with the skins off. Cole slaw is a miss for me. Its vinegar based and tastes "Asian" with a lot of sesame oil flavor. Would rather have a more KFC type cole slaw. Clam chowder is OK. Would like a more creamy type of chowder. I highly recommend this place however. Great price point as well

Email response: "I am writing to you in regards to a few visits you've had at our Alki location recently. I appreciate your support of Duke's and I hope you know that we do our very best to accommodate each and every guest with all of their needs and desires. I have been involved with the correspondence since late May when you first emailed in to us. We have made a few mistakes on those visits and we have done our best to rectify the situation and accommodate your requests to this point. After hearing of your latest visit and reading the Yelp post, I have done some investigating and I have to say that your actions border on abusive behavior. To verbally abuse our staff and team and demand a table because we were busy and on a wait is unacceptable and not tolerated, for any guest, in any situation. Our manager did his best to accommodate your requests and was belittled and called out for not moving your position to the top of the list. This kind of behavior is rude and inconsiderate and we just cannot allow it to continue. We seem to have a difficult time making you happy. Maybe we are not the place for you? If we are, we would like to ask that you treat our staff with an amount of respect that you would expect. If you don't feel we can accommodate you, we wish you the best in finding a restaurant/bar that does. Thank you for listening. Regards, John Moscrip COO- Duke's Chowder House" . . . . . Hello John Moscrip, COO of Duke's Chowder House, No doubt your personal response to me is largely due my Yelp review of your Alki establishment. Thank you for your response, but I do feel that your investigation (as you call it) largely calls attention to my borderline abusive word choices in my review in particular towards the manager Rick, since no other actions can be accounted for other than us not eating there. I wholeheartedly believe that Greg attempted to resolve issues, and hence why I have decided I've had enough of this establishment. Gloves are off on Yelp John. Feel free to cry about it, send me responses, ban us from coming to Duke's, but I'm sharing my poor experiences publicly when they are this bad. First off, nobody ever demanded to be put first in any line ever. In the past you've held a full bar with EMPTY restaurant tables inches from the bar where Duke's refused us happy hour service there. It was on my third experience of being turned away that I contacted Greg. Get your investigative facts straight John, Duke's of Alki refused us service, quoted happy hour times and told us to come back earlier next time. Are you going to tell me that's anything other than fucking unacceptable? Our latest visit never had anything to do with being put first on a list. We requested a table and said we would wait for a table. We said we would gladly wait at the bar until a table opened up, Rick seemed to feel that if we were good enough to wait at a bar that we could eat there, this is not what we requested. Neither one of us had an issue with waiting to get what we wanted. Yet, we condescendingly told we were on a waiting list when we weren't. Again, this is the same old story of Duke's on Alki not being adept enough to anticipate and provide decent guest service. We never have this kind of problem at Duke's in Southcenter. The exception is they know how to accommodate guests effortlessly and without the asshole attitude. And I can see the root of the Alki problem lies in its rude management, Rick is a jerk. My actions were appropriate, I left and put my grievances here, as I continue to do so. Hey, thanks for responding personally to my Yelp review after silently "following me since May". I think you are 100% right, Duke's of Alki doesn't cut it to make us happy, hence this review was written to seal the deal and let you know you have failed. Your email further shows that you choose a defensive stance and choose to call me abusive rather than take ownership for Duke's continual poor treatment. But I'm sure you got your facts accurate from Rick. Whatever does he have to gain? We're just two less people he has to deal with ever again.

Pretty horrible service. Ordered a drink and it took 15min to bring it out and we were seated in the bar area. Asked for bread 3times and never came to the table the entire time we were there and I'm pretty sure you are supposed to get bread regardless. Our server didn't take our order for what almost felt like forever after we were reseated at the bar for Happy Hour at 8:40 because no one took our order until about 9:20. Dukes has good food, but overpriced and slow service on a night that was not busy at all.

I've been twice in the last 2 days for happy hour - one regular and one late night. Both were weekdays so they weren't that busy. So I was a bit annoyed that I had to wait a good amount of time before the hostess returned to her post up front. When she did return however, she was friendly, efficient, and kind. I had the same bartender upstairs both times. He was polite, quick, and patient and made wonderful recommendations for the orange mojito and salmon sliders. I like my drinks that mask the alcohol well; this was perfect! The sliders were not what I expected - in a good way! They came out on amazing molasses bread, perfectly cooked salmon, topped with just the right amount if pesto. I'll be back one more time before I leave town and it'll be my first stop when I return!

Just finished, still seated at the table looking at the beautiful bay view... Great food! Me and my brother had the salmon with berries and goat cheese which was refreshing, and the salmon over pasta which was exactly what I was hoping! Service is great, food took 5 min. To get to the table!!! I'm giving 4* and not 5 because of the process but then again, u r paying for the view as much as for the food! And it's worth it...

Amazing way to Celebrate the 2014 Summer Solstice, sunset dinner at Duke's @ Alki Beach; we were fortunate enough to witness the heralded Major League Rookie server debut of Liam, tremendous young man with Rock Star potential. The Best just keep getting better, congrats to Team Duke, way to build through the Farm system. Dukes on Alki Beach is the place to be. ; )

I may change my review the next time I come back. I want to try going with less people next time. I was here for a birthday dinner and we had probably 20 ppl - not sure why restaurants only have 1 server for large parties but seem to be the industry standard. I got there at 7:30 and our food orders weren't taken until about 8:40. My boyfriends entree was missing and I can't understand why. It really sucked that he had to wait even longer for his dinner. But like I mentioned earlier, we did have a large party so I can't expect the best service. When I walked in, no one greeted me. I stood by the front door awkwardly for about 5 min before I finally decided to walk upstairs to see if my friends were there. Enough about the service, my chowder sample was yummy. My steak was dry (how a medium rare steak come up dry, I'll never know) ... my Cucumber Mojito was was good ... Fish & Chips was decent.

The perfect reception dinner! As parents of the groom, we were responsible for the reception dinner. Reserved the "banquet room" at Dukes for the dinner for 30. When we looked at the space, we thought it would be nice, but it was even better than we thought it would be. The room is not really a room but an open space on the second floor with a fantastic view of Puget Sound. It is a few steps above the outdoor patio so you look out over the people outside. We lucked out and had a fabulous sunset during dinner. Dukes has a banquet menu with several choices. We went with one of the higher priced options but it was really worth it. Food is served buffet style with servers on selected items. There is an appetizer course where we had their great clam chowder, Caesar salad, chicken skewers and butterfly shrimp. This was a meal in itself. After they cleared the dishes it was time for the main course: fingerling potatoes, tortellini, crab stuffed salmon and steak. Yum!!!!! Everything tasted great. We had two dedicated servers, I wished I got their names because they were so good that they deserve to be "named". They were extra friendly, extremely efficient and really made you feel at home. If you are planning a group dinner, be sure to check out Dukes on Alki!

Last night was my second time at this location and for a summer evening on alki this is a nice spot for grabbing HH. My friend and I was approached by three people who asked if we've been helped, how are in the party, etc before we got seated. Kind of unorganized...finally we were seated upstairs next to the warm fire stick things which was awesome for watching the sunset while listening to fun drum beat music from the beach. I remember the hostess telling us there's free music n dancing every Friday on the beach!!! score! Service was great and both my friend and I had a great time.

We did not get the chance to actually eat at Dukes. We were quite disappointed actually. We walked in and asked to sit in the bar since it was happy hour. We sat down, started looking at the menu, a few minutes passed, picked out what we wanted to order, meanwhile, a family walked in to the dining room, got served water and bread, a guy walked in and joined a group in the bar, got served a drink. This whole time no one even acknowledged our presence. We were sitting there for over 10 minutes. And nothing. We decided to leave and the hostess just looked at us and was like "ummm bye?".Ugh disappointing. We'll have to maybe try a different location next time. There's a dukes in Greenlake. Maybe they have better service.

We were brought here by a friend who lives in West Seattle while in town for business. Don't be fooled by the humble decor, they have some seriously good service and great food. We started with the salmon sliders, which may have been the best thing we ate. My wife and I shared the Silky Pan Seared Salmon; first, they divided it onto two separate plates, which was a very nice touch and the salmon was wonderful. The waitress was very helpful in answering questions about the menu and suggested a local soda instead of Coke, which was also very good. We finished the meal with the carrot cake, which was impossible to tell that it was gluten free, and was a sizable portion and a perfect ending to a great meal. Beyond the food, there's a great view of the sound and the beach. This is a great little gem of a place, we can't wait until we're in Seattle again to go back.

On a recent visit, we found this place on Opentable - the atmosphere is pub like but friendly and we had good service. The crab cakes, clam chowder and the salmon sliders were all hits. If I find myself in this part of Seattle again, I would return. Nice view too! We ate there for lunch and liked it - dinner - I cannot comment on.

The smell of salt water and view of Elliott Bay gets me every time. Start with the classic clam chowder and meander your way through the vast menu. Everything is sustainable and created with full flavors. Favorites include salmon sliders, burgers, fish tacos, spinach salad, prawns and their crab "un-cake". All of the wines are thoughtfully chosen and most by the glass, either a 7 ounce or 9 ounce pour. Best Moscow Mule anywhere.

Probably one of the best values in terms of quality of the food for the price. Atmosphere is great, whether you're with the family or on a date. My personal favorites are the Better than Mahi tacos, the Wasabi Quesadillas and the award winning chowder. I've heard that the fish and chips are great too as well as the burgers although I cannot confirm from personal experience. Really one of my favorite restaurants in West Seattle, especially along Alki Beach.

Terrible service - not sure what was with the hostess last Friday night but she was confused and unhelpful... She didn't know how long the wait was 15 minutes... Maybe half an hour? We decided to sit at the bar have a couple drinks and check out the menu while we waited. The bartender was okay maybe just slightly below average with his service... Our experience was going downhill fast and after exploring the menu we decided there was nothing on it worth staying for...

Had a fine meal but the service was terrible! 3 tables occupied 2 servers no recheck had cash out to pay bill on end of table for at least 5 minutes and dishes piled up and pushed away for 10. Waitress came buy after i had gone to get a menu to tally up bill to make sure I left enough as we were walking out she runs up and says let me get your bill, sorry. I said thats enough. I usually leave 18-20% but not today. Disappointed. I don't mind not rushing but ignored is something else.

BEST CLAM CHOWDER EVER! I tried Dukes for the very first times a few years ago and fell in love. No chowder has been able to top Dukes. Not even Pikes Place Chowder in Pikes Marketplace. The chowder at Dukes is thick and every spoonful has the perfect amount of clams and potatoes. Pikes Place chowder is very runny and lacks flavor. I would pay the extra few bucks for Dukes and eat it everyday if I could! The night we left, my entire group ordered the tureen size chowder! Give it a try and you won't be disappointed. You be the judge.

Very disappointed with the lack of service tonight. My husband, daughter and I arrived at 6pm. We requested a table for 3 and were asked if we had a reservation. Of course, we did not. We were told it would be a 15-20m wait, we agreed to wait. As we stood and waited we realized there were 4 empty tables with reserved signs on them. It was now 6:12, obviously past 6pm reservations, other people paying bills and still we stand and look at 4 empty reserved tables. As a business owner, it is poor practice. We have grown accustomed to stellar service in West Seattle and are proud to call it home, this is not an experience that will bring us back. We left and went to the local restaurant next door.

We've been here several times and the food is always good and the service is consistently friendly, hence the 5 stars--we never leave disappointed. Seafood dishes are fresh and tasty! The business is very generous with all the coupons and special offerings. Great location with views of the Sound and the Peninsula!

I think Duke's always has the best location and drink menu but the food is always mediocre. At this location I had the bbq bacon cheeseburger with sweet potato fries and warm blueberry scones with strawberry jam (part of their Mother's Day menu). The sweet potato fries had black pepper on them which I thought was a little gross and mostly weird. The burger was good. I really liked the bread, which tasted like their house bread but in bun form. The ranch that accompanied the burger was DELICIOUS. Tried a couple bites of my friend's crusted halibut and for someone who doesn't like fish and chips I thought it was fabulous. Service was very attentive and the view of the beach from the bottom deck was great. There's also an upstairs deck.

We ate there on a cold and rainy Sunday on June 15th. The staff was friendly and fast. The food was fantastic, especially the chowder and fish and chips. Would recommend a reservation as it is small and busy.

Cucumber mojitos on the upper deck are heavenly. Can't beat the view on a sunny day. Crabcakes and chowder were both really good too. I'll be back!

Went here last weekend with my brother and his wife. The place is pretty nice, it was extremely busy when we arrived and there was no outdoor seating. We decided to take a seat at the bar and it took a long time for the bartender to serve us. Then after about fifteen or twenty minutes we were seated outside. The menu selections all sounded so good, and I had trouble deciding between the chowder and the crab sandwich. At the last minute I got both. I was first served the clam chowder...which was delicious, especially with the bread provided. The crab sandwich came next. It was delicious. Succulent crab, butter, avocado, cheese and spinach melted onto an English muffin. I took some chowder and half of the sandwich home for my boyfriend who liked it as well. Although they were busy and I think perhaps training (not sure?) the service seemed a bit lagging and it seemed very forced-friendly which I didn't appreciate. I like places with speedy and genuine, caring service towards customers. I realize its a busy spot though, so it was forgiven because of how yummy the food was, all in all, I would definitely love to go back! Getting my chowder in a bread bowl next time!

This place is STRUGGLING....customer service was horrible. We came in on a Wednesday night, the place wasn't crowded. Order a drink, it took 30 minutes to get the drink. Another 20 minutes to take our order. We were promised bread at LEAST 4 times, it never came. Food was mediocre. Not impressed. We won't be back.

I came here with my husband a month go and was seated quickly. Our server was Mori and he delivered excellent customer service and also, he was very attentive. The quality of food is absolutely fantastic. I recommend stopping by during happy hour. =)

Okay - I've got to up them one for their professionalism around my comments - especially considering I was a little snarky. My disappointment often manifests in snarkiness. Anyway, I'm going to give them another try and see what happens...tune in later...

Went to Duke's for happy hour before the Mariners home opener. What a great experience! Great food, nice atmosphere, great view of the water. The clam chowder was some of the best I have had. Menu had many options for reasonable prices - we also had the pesto and goat cheese quesadilla, killer prawns, clam strips, and a couple drinks... All for about the same price as two stadium hot dogs and generic beers would have been at the stadium. :) The only thing I will say is our server seemed a little bit irritated that we arrived for happy hour at about 2:50 when it started at 3.... We drove up from Portland for the game so our timing was a little off... And we didn't feel like sitting in the car for 10 more minutes... We were completely fine waiting to order until 3. He warmed up after the initial interaction and was very pleasant as was the rest of the staff. We will definitely be back!

Came for happy hour last week and tried the crab uncake, chowder, and mahi fish tacos. All were very good! Our server was also very nice and helpful. I'll be back to try the rest of the menu sometime.

We had our rehearsal dinner at Duke's. Working with them before hand to get a custom menu together was easy and straightforward - the manager Greg let me know about options and we put a plated dinner together for everyone. The rehearsal dinner was upstairs - we had 32 guests and the upstairs space accommodated everyone very well. The servers were great and patient with my family and friends giving many different drink orders at many different times - and they remembered all the orders and got the drinks to us promptly. The food - salad and chowder to begin with, then salmon, chicken, or steak, then a butterfinger pie - was great. Steaks were a tiny bit dry but pretty standard for a banquet type meal and they don't exactly specialize in steak at a seafood restaurant anyway. The view couldn't have been better and Duke's didn't rush us out at all but instead let us all enjoy meeting each other. I would definitely recommend for those of you looking into rehearsal dinner sites!

I love this place. I was bummed when they changed the Crab Club sandwich a few years back but the food is still totally delicious (Try the crab chowder and crab stuffed prawns! Yum!) and the service is always prompt and friendly. Last night, they saved date night after Salty's blew it (see that review for details) and seated us immediately upon arrival. Everything was great for me. My husband was disappointed that there wasn't a chicken dish on the menu and there was a weird miscommunication at the end which resulted in him not getting his dessert. It would have been nice if they had offered some sort of compensation for that mistake (free dessert next time?) but I know we'll be back again in spite of it.

The food is amazing here! I've had several of their salads as well as other choices and it's always fresh and tasty. Since it's right on the water, the waiting time is always longer than at other locations, but once you're seated, it's worth the wait.

Came during an art festival that was held on alki. Had a late lunch with the fam. We were seated right away. Lil man had the fish and organic fingerling potatoes, hubby for the Caesar salad and chowder combo and I had the blackened salmon Caesar salad. Everything was just subpar. The chowder was pretty good. The salmon wasnt bad, I asked for them to cook it through and it wasn't overly dry. Everything was just mediocre therefore the 3/5 star rating. Would we go back? Eh.. Maybe, maybe not.

We came here during lunch with my kids and wife. Tough choice between Dukes and Christo's next door but glad that we went here. Although I'm not a big shellfish eater because of allergies but my wife and kids enjoyed it. When we came here, it was packed! I was worried we weren't going to have a seat at all but eventually made room for us. Great view as well for people watching and good food. Seating is a little close to each other so it'll be difficult for those who have strollers. Price is competitive versus other restaurants in the area and they have an upstairs seating as well. Definitely going to this place again when given a chance when visiting this area. Now we came during Winter time and I can't imagine the busyness during summer due to its location.

Much can be said for Duke's... Consistent is probably the best. Yes, there are better seafood places in Seattle. However, I know, when ordering off the special's sheet, I am getting fresh and in season seafood. Their chowder is also consistent... consistently delicious! I easily can have chowder alone for dinner... I can also have it as a side for my fish. Yummy! They keep giving away their recipe but I am far too lazy to actually try to make it. On Mondays, they have outstanding 1/2 price on bottles of wine. Outstanding deal! And their normal happy hour is pretty good too. Nothing beats a great meal on the patio here!

I had the best traditional clam chowder I've ever had, and my husband loved the Manhattan style chowder (and he's a SUPER picky eater). The special of smoked salmon on pumpkin filled ravioli was to die for! The service was excellent, with the waiter providing excellent tips and suggestions. I wish I lived nearby so I could go here all the time!

They have THE.BEST. Crab cakes! Highly recommend sitting in the bar during happy hour if you are on a budget. The steamer appetizer is a must! The chowder was not the highlight of the visit but don't waste your money on the sample. Go with a small cup of the classic or crab. You can't go wrong!

  • Yekta A.

Two things you gotta order here: the famous clam chowder + the calamari appetizer dish! We went in after our bike ride and it was the best food that hit the spot! The calamari is only for 1 person, get the big size chowder and share it. We also ordered their cheeseburger and that was tasty but I loved the chowder + calamri better!

HH Review. With that being said, we got the crab dip with bread, south California jr burger, and a bowl of clam chowder. I really like the crab dip because it comes with garlic bread to dip with, an extra dose of flavor. I can also see chunks of crab meat which is always a good sign. The burger was just okay, but I love the wedge cut fries that came with it. The best is the clam chowder. YUM! It was delicious. That's why I gave it a 4 instead of 3 :) They have HH daily only in the bar and upstairs on the porch in the Summer. They will open it later this month when we asked.

I would have done 3.5 stars if I could have. The food was decent but for what we ordered the prices were high. I had the blackened halibut sandwich and a bowl of chowder, and my hubby had the fish tacos. The best part was definitely the chowder, and if I went back I would just get that. They also brought out warm sourdough bread to start. The real plus to this place is the view. It sits across the street from Alki beach. The day we were there the sun was out and we sat on the upper patio. The one downfall of their outdoor eating space is that there isn't any shade and they only had a couple of umbrellas and around a dozen tables. So we did end up sitting in the sun.

I'd agree with others that the food here is pretty good, not stellar but pretty good. I like the steak salad. I just think that it's severely over priced for what you get. My husband loves their combo dishes, but he agrees that they are not worth the cost...

We stopped in on a warm summer afternoon recently and were seated promptly, despite the crowd. The french doors were open, but it was still uncomfortably warm inside. I would suggest some ceiling fans or some other kind of air circulation for inside seating. Our waitress was very friendly (bordering on forced) and had good knowledge of the menu. She was able to answer questions readily and made helpful suggestions. She did, however, forget to bring us the famous warm sourdough bread until we were halfway through our meal. While the food was good, I thought it was very over priced. The "cup" of chowder was served in a shallow china bowl, but was still only a cup and cost $7.50. For that price, I would expect a true bowl! And... it would have been much better with the sourdough bread that we didn't receive until much later. The entree portions were on the small side of average, but in the end were sufficient for an entree - but were still very overpriced. The flavor was good, but not exceptional. For the same price, go try Elliot's on the Seattle waterfront. Much better food in the same price range.

Great clam chowder on waterfront. However everything else is just so-so with lots of "famous" hype... yes everything is dubbed famous there. Asked for anchovies for my ceaser, rejected by staff... not good. Asked if they make ceaser from scratch and raw egg, wait staff said yes... clearly another error

Oh my! I will never come back to this place again. The food and drinks are overpriced and lack imagination. The regular chowder had too much dill in it to enjoy the other flavors. The service was slow even though it is a very small restaurant. My salmon came to the table overdone. One has many choices for dining in this area, and I would not recommend this one.

Our server Elizabeth was awesome! Really good clam strips - very different, well-spiced and not rubbery - and meaty crab cakes and spinach salad. And of course, amazing clam chowder! Great prices on combo dinners and big portions. Not-great prices on wine by the glass. Amazing views of Alki Beach.

Went for lunch by myself today at Duke's. Ordered the chowder and salad combo. Came with a nice loaf of WARM sourdough bread. It was heavenly! Thank you to the great server and the explanation about the new soda choice. I will be back...yummy

The waiter was a colombian Guy that was very nice! We weren't sure which chowder to choose so he brought samples.... He was incredibly nice! In addition we ordered some goat cheese and pesto quesadillas that so delicious. For our entrees, we had a BBQ cheeseburger and a trio sampler of crab cakes, shrimp and scallops. Everything was amazing!! We thought the crab cakes were the best by far!!! We would definitely go back.... :)

Being a local Northwesterner I was excited to have a meal at Dukes. I have been to all of the seafood houses throughout the Northwest over the years and I was anticipating a good meal. I was not impressed with Dukes...The food was bland and the cocktails were o.k. One of my favorite cocktails of all time is the Bloody-Mary and Dukes BM was way too salty. I feel bad because I wanted Duke's to be my to-go spot when I'm in that area-but not so much. The customer service is good and friendly. I really wanted to like/enjoy Dukes and give it a fair shake but in the end I left wondering why I wasted my time driving around Alki looking for a parking space for fifteen minutes all to eat a meal there that was marginal.

Plus: The location. I love the outdoor seating - it's perfect for a sunny Seattle afternoon with great views of the beach, especially during sunset. Deltas: If you have "chowder" in your name, you better have awesome chowder. I thought the chowder was average at best. I tried the regular chowder, the one with the crab, and the seafood chowder. The cioppino style chowder was too watery and lacking tangyness for a tomato based chowder. The other two were completely forgettable. I might be back for happy hour and appetizers but, not the chowder. Did I mention the great view?

With a reservation, we were seated immediately during peak dinner hours on one of the first sunny weekends up here... unfortunately, we were seated next to a family with at least 3 wandering, touchy-feely children! The adults in this group didn't seem to mind their children trying to escape and just let their children do whatever they wanted (which isn't the restaurant's fault, but it did affect our experience). The tables are rather close together here as well and it was louder than I thought it would be; it definitely was not an escape from all of the people on Alki Beach! On to the food! I *never* would have ordered the stuffed halibut if I hadn't read yelp reviews, and I must say it. was. excellent. I personally don't like the idea of stuffing fish because I always find that it ruins the integrity of the fish, but Duke's did it in such a way that the halibut was still flaky and moist and the stuffing was rather evenly distributed too (and yummy - you can't go wrong with crab!). The sauce on the fish made the dish adding a gentle touch of seasoning to an otherwise under-seasoned fillet. I let my husband taste it and I could tell right away he was disappointed that he ordered mahi mahi tacos and didn't copy my order (after dinner I asked him how his meal was and he said that he remembered he doesn't really like mahi mahi and he probably won't be ordering any fish tacos anywhere for a while). The other couple we were there with split the cioppino and didn't seem to have any complaints. Oh, yes... and the sourdough bread they serve with the meal is wonderful -- warm and flavorful. It wasn't perfectly clear and sunny when we were here, but the view was still gorgeous -- not direct of the Seattle skyline, but a great view over the water and mountains. If you're the type who enjoys crowds and maybe even a few cocktails, I think Duke's is a great spot. It is a little on the pricier side but if you find the right dish I think it's worth it (especially because the "finer dining" Salty's would have dishes much more expensive than at Duke's and I personally was a little disappointed in Salty's dinner anyway...).

  • Dan O.

I ordered their New England style clam chowder for lunch yesterday, as I have on many occasions. As a lover of chowder, I find theirs to be above average, but with a slightly processed texture. That said, my only real area of contention with Duke's are their prices. In my opinion, the quality of food - which is above average, as I stated earlier - does not justify their high price points. Their bowl of chowder runs $12.95, which isn't overly excessive, but the portions are a tad small in my opinion. That bowl may look deep but it ain't. They do give you free bread if that holds any weight with you.

I have been here a few times now and would indeed call it "A-OK". Our server this round was really sweet, and our happy hour experience was a success. Prices were decent for both food and beverage, and the food was good. The choices for food were again, decent, with tons of slider options, chowder, and other apps. I wish there was more healthy options. The atmosphere here is really what you go for. It doesn't get much better than happy hour on Puget Sound on Alki. For other meals I would skip it. For the money, it's pretty darn expensive for what you get.

Manager is extremely rude. The way he treats customers and staff is ridiculous. We had iced teas from tullys in our hands and the hostess said we couldn't have outside drinks, we asked if we could just put them in their cups, she said that was fine and brought us different cups. The manager then came over and yelled at us and said we had to throw them away immediately. We would have had no problem throwing them away in the first place but the hostess said we could switch the container. He had no reason to yell at us or the hostess.

You can't beat this place for good eats and a beautiful view of the water/skyline on a sunny day in Seattle! I highly recommend waiting a little while for a spot on the upstairs patio, otherwise you will be cramped in the downstairs dining room. The chowders are what they're famous for (obviously) and, yes, they are tasty but I really love their blackened salmon dishes. Both the blackened salmon salad and the blackened salmon tacos are DELICIOUS and fresh! If you're there for happy hour or later, I also recommend the Bell Hop for light, refreshing treat in a glass!

  • Marissa G.

If you are a cioppino lover--- this isn't the place for you. World class bloody mary's- hands down. The chowder is also a 10. However, if you are used to good cioppino.. you will get some seafood in minestrone soup broth. Complete with carrots. Skip it.

I don't know, maybe it's the upper deck, but I keep coming back. Firstly, alleged tourist trap or not, I find the food to be pretty good. I couldn't eat here every day, but once it a while it's really nice--the mahi mahi tacos are good, and the chowder is always a crowd pleaser. I took my out-of-town parents here the other night and called ahead for reservations; apparently you cannot reserve a table outside on the deck, but you can request one (understandable), and we were able to get a spot in the sun--props to the hostess. Waitstaff was friendly, the view was lovely, and the food was good. I'm sure if you're a Seattle foodie it would be mediocre, but not being of that persuasion and only eating seafood on occasion, I found the menu to be quite nice (though a touch pricey) and something I'd happily order from a few times per season. Friendly staff, decent food, great view--I'd go again.

I liked this place better than Elliot's. It is a bit more intimate than much of the other places. Prices are ok for seafood. The fish and chips were good. Happy hour is good. Staff was inviting and nice even when it was closing time. I would return.

Memoirs of The Invisible Men So it was a slightly sunny alki day, my friend and I went to Dukes. (I recommended it) We were seated right away, but then something strange happened. We were completely ignored while three parties walked in and were given drinks and taken their orders. We didn't really even have a glass of water. So we have our waitress tell us to wait at her first table visit, a different girl comes and tells us to wait again. Finally the 3rd visit we were brought water....and asked to wait? While all other tables were drinking and being helped. So we left and found another spot who can see all people.

We looked this place up when we got to Seattle because we met the owner in a Costco a couple of years back. We ended up purchasing the frozen chowder there because we thought he was a fun person. Anyway I loved the chowder (which amazed me). I hate chowder normally but this place is SO YUMMY. We got the chowder dingy's and they were so delicious. Every single one of them melted in my mouth. It was a bit pricey but it was so delicious. Even if you're not a chowder person you should try it!

We went twice; Alki Beach and Lake Union. For casual dining check it out. They have very good chowders, very good beers, very good fish, and good servers. Not much else to judge beyond that. Bathrooms are clean, especially in the beach store, where it must be hard to keep it that way. I'm a fan.

The host and server were very friendly. But the food was overpriced and just average. Hubby ordered a small bowl of clam chowder ($7.50!), which was way too salty and barely had any clam in it. We've had much better at several other places in Seattle. He also ordered the Angry Copper River Salmon which was $26. He had really wanted to try Copper River salmon for the first time & was disappointed that he couldn't even taste the flavor of meat. It came in a large bowl of extremely spicy watery soup stuff that had overly-large chunks of squash in it. We eat A LOT of spicy food & he loves heat to his dishes, but said this level of spice was detrimental to the flavor. It wasn't a complex spicy like in Indian or Thai food. It was like someone dumped a bunch of Tabasco sauce in the bowl. I'm pretty sure he was still hungry when he finished, because the "soup" part was pretty much inedible & the veggies just didn't look appetizing. I ordered the Copper River salmon sliders. The bread tasted pretty good, but I had to disassemble it b/c it was too thick to bite into with the salmon on top. The pesto needed a little bit of salt b/c it was bland. It tasted like fresh pesto, which was awesome, but it just didn't have much flavor. The salmon was dry & overcooked. I was impressed with the fact that it didn't taste fishy considering that it was probably frozen then cooked. We didn't complain b/c we wanted to get out in time to watch the sunset. But it was not good food, especially for the price. $65 for dinner and tip. We felt like we'd wasted our money. Read my review on The Salish Lodge's food. THAT'S how you cook salmon. Juicy and muahhhh flavor:)

Celebrating our new home, we came here exhilarated, exhausted and hungry. Can't thank the manager and our waitress enough for a wonderful meal, thoughtful service (I suffer from Celiac Disease and they were so nice) and for being so accommodating when we were 45 minutes late for our reservation. Oh and delicious food too :)

3:30 on a sunny Sunday and no trouble scoring a second floor terrace table with sound view for happy hour. Had to ask for a HH menu, as did the table behind us with a different server. Ours seemed new, not totally familiar with the menu and forgetting a drink, but he was helpful and rought plenty of bread. The chowder delivered.

I'm giving this place 5 stars for the customer service! I was really impressed by the amount of attention I got when I stopped in for a to-go order for a picnic dinner. Everyone was so friendly and helpful (one of the staff even let me use his phone to call my husband as I had left mine in the car). Genuinely great customer service is really rare, but Duke's Alki NAILS it! The food was delicious too. My Halibut sandwich was fantastic. My husbands burger was too. My sons Med- well burger was well done, if not VERY well done ( I saw him wincing when he was swallowing even), which is why I only give 4 stars.

Hot chowder on a rainy night on the beach= Ye$. Ordered a 1/2 fish and chips with some clam chowder (upgraded it to bread bowl)- the clam chowder came steaming in the sourdough breadbowl, deliciously creamy! a bit disappointed with the portion of the fish and chips though- only 2 fillets and a whole lot of chips. for 20 something bucks i would expect more fish. We also ordered the chicken cobb salad and salmon plate with asparagus and potatoes. Both very good. There's also a full bar with a TV, usually on a sports channel if you're into that. I would say, go here if you have a little extra dollars to spend, and you'll enjoy it

Came here with a beautiful lady friend of mine, and was seated immediately out on the patio outside. Service here isn't super fast but it is attentive enough. The servers are really friendly, the ambieance of course is top of the class casual as it is right on alki beach. I got the california bacon cheeseburger and my friend got the organic salad. The quality of food is definitely above average although portions are a bit small. Prices are sky high, but you can't expect much less considering that it is alki beach...total was about 40 bucks. Not a place to frequent but worth the experience !

After arriving to Seattle on a flight from Denver, we went to Duke's Chowder House for a evening meal with family. We started our meal with a Dungeness Crab Dip, which was excellent. Our table had 3 of their chowders, clam, lobster, and crab. They were all very good, but the clam was my favorite. For the main course, I had the crab, scallop, and prawn dinner with potatoes and asparagus. Everything was delicious. Everyone else in our party also enjoyed their dinners. The service was good, but not great. Would definitely return when visiting town.

I have been a loyal customer of this restaurant for years. It's my favorite restaurant on Alki. I've always had a great experience. Why? Because of the options they provide. I've been here for lunch, dinner, and happy hour. I've been seated inside, outside, and upstairs. I've visited with and without reservations. The quality and variety of food on the menu has also met my expectations. Fresh greens. Creamy chowder. Juicy burger. Crispy fries. The complimentary bread and butter also helps. The manager hires energetic and friendly people. Don't bother bringing a baby stroller. Those people have a hard time getting through the narrow aisles and it'll block the walkway. Don't be surprised that you can't get a spot in the bar area for happy hour. It's very popular and seating is limited so go early.

Being that the Amazing Girlfriend and I were her for merely minutes and took a seat quickly at the bar, ordering a vodka soda (for the girlfriend) and a "dukes Manhattan" for myself , I cant judge all that much. Bartender says the cucumber margaritas are the hot item here and The Amazing Girlfriend vouches. Quick service, delicious drinks poured fairly, at decent prices. We'll be back for more than drinks next time.

sour bread is great. not bad. not bad. but very pricey for not bad. i had a crabby mac and cheese dish which was pretty good... but seriously -- it was $20 for a small portion. it did come with a salad though -- warm spinach -- which was quite good as well. i tried a bite of blackened mahi mahi tacos which were decent. spiced appropriately... i liked it. it was bit more expensive than the food was worth, in my opinion, though. the menu suffers from paradox of choice ... but from the variety of orders i saw, everything was done pretty well.

This restaurant is very expensive for what you get. Plan to spend $100.00 with a couple of main courses, maybe a shared appetizer and $15.00 drinks. Go to Chandlers, Elliot's and have a better meal. On Alki, Duke's is high end, you are better off going to Sunfish for fish and chips, chowder, etc. Rip off. We have been there dozens of times and swear we will not do it again.

It's fun to bring out-of-towners to Alki who have never been there before, and observe their awe as they take seemingly dozens of pictures that capture the wondrous scenery. And that's what we did before going to dinner at Duke's last night. We have always been big fans of Duke's, both the Alki and the Green Lake locations. But something was just not right last night and it's hard to put my finger on exactly what it was. We were seated immediately inside downstairs. That was fine because old lady Puget Sound was already beginning to wrap the shoreline in a chilly blanket and Duke's did not have the heat lamps operating on the deck. Besides, the hostess flatly told the party in front of us there was no way they were gonna get seated on the deck. Not that there would be a wait for seating on the deck, just no, you won't get seated on the deck. We noticed that they had nice and pretty new menus. However, none of the dishes had changed from the old menu. Only difference was that there had been hefty price increases. A cup of chowder was now $7. A burger $13. Our waiter was nice enough, but it took forever for him to get us our chowder and the signature hot sourdough bread. It also took fifteen minutes for him to bring my dining companions their glasses of white wine to the table (my iced tea was brought out promptly). Note: there were several empty tables so I know the restaurant was not getting slammed. We all started with either the crab or lobster chowder. It was unanimous - we all preferred the lobster. Our friend from PDX ordered the Dungeness Crab & Prawn Gnocchi. She thought it was good. I tried it and found it decent, but really low-key, too low-key in flavor. JP had the Wild Mixed Greens and liked it. Myself - I probably have burned out on seafood, eating too much of it lately, so I went with a burger. The meat, while of a good quality, was devoid of much flavor. It could have stood more salt. Okay, so that's what it is. The prices are way up and service (at least tonight) was not what it was in the past, and that's why we don't love Duke's like we once did.

Note: My review is biased (in a positive way) by the fact that it was a remarkable beautiful day in Alki. I doubt I would find Duke's as wonderful had it been a cloudy, rainy day. The upstairs deck is awesome! Do not eat inside - walk around the beach & wait for a table. Fortunantly there was no wait for us on a Wednesday evening around 7 on a glorious Seattle day, so maybe you will get lucky too (I imagine that Duke's must get crowded). The menu is appallingly lacking in vegetarian options, just salad & side vegetables. The "Wild Greens" salad I got was solid - lots & lots of creamy blue cheese, sweet pecans, fresh oranges, & a very mild but flavorful dressing. Each bite was coated in cheese, and the ingrediants were fresh. The side vegetables were quite good - buttered asparagus with a tomato garlic brushetta on top. The taco dishes I saw served to other people looked awesome, however the fried fish looked kinda sad & not very good. Come here on a nice sunny day, sit on the upstairs deck, & kick back with a beer. Really doesn't get more awesome than that.

We sat at the bar and had an appetizer. The drinks were pricey and watery (not a great combination), and the crab spread had more tomatoes in it than crab meat. I'd like to go back for dinner sometime just to see if the chowder is really as legit as everyone says, but it's not going to be high-up on my to-do list.

This place really does have excellent chowder, but aside from that I'm not sure what else there is to rave about. Their clams in butter and white wine is tasty but I learned to make it at home because it's kind of pricey to order it. Oh their drinks are delightful. Try the cucumber mojito... the bloody mary is also made right.

I frequent the Lake Union Duke's and this was the first time I went to the Alki Duke's. The food was up to usual Duke's standards and the wait-staff was down to the usual Duke's low standards. From what I saw on a Tuesday night, this place has a younger, less pretentious, crowd than the Lake Union Duke's and feels more like a neighborhood restaurant than a tourist place. I had a $20 three course dinner with lobster pernod, garden salad and a mahi mahi taco. The pernod was very good, the salad was a surprise, I loved it and the taco was very good. Service was slow, the waiter forgot my beer and I had to remind him. When I was finished, even with a very small crowd in the restaurant, I had to wait quite a while for the bill. Just the usual Duke's lack of attention to the customer's needs. Get used to it, "chowder with an attitude."

The only reason I'm giving this two stars even is because of the killer view. It was a beautiful evening so we sat on the patio. Otherwise I would have left. Our server sucked. 20 minutes to come a get our drink order, which he didn't bring out, 20 minutes to take our food order which took forever. Over 30 minutes to get our salads/soup. Salads were wilty (had obviously sat in the window heating up yuck!) and yes, again he didn't bring our food, the another 30 minutes for the entrees which were cold and incorrect, and you guessed it he didn't bring those either! We got the lemons we requested after we were done eating. He was cocky and pretty much thought he was all that, which he surely was not. I've worked in some of the best restaurants in the city, and I will never go back there. There are too many other places to get great fresh Seafood in this town. I thought it would be fun to take the kids there. The chowder is usually good, but it's no bueno when it's cold. Maybe if we were ringing up a big bar bill we would have got the service we deserved for the prices they were charging.

Love this place been here a dozen or more times and it never disappoints. I love the Happy Hour 9-11 bites menu. Cheap, filling and very yummy. Cool bartenders and great views.

Had a great time here with my sister and girlfriend. We sat on the balcony on a GORGEOUS day and it overlooked the Puget Sound. The sun was out and not a cloud in the sky. It was also a good spot for people-watching. Fun times. We showed up not really knowing what to expect, and were seated promptly. There was plenty of seating and the service was rather quick considering how nice of a day it was. We were started with a sourdough loaf, which was very tasty and the sun just melted the butter perfectly. I ordered the blackened fish tacos and boy were they messy! I wasn't sure how to eat them as it was red tortillas filled with cabbage, fish, white sauce, avocado, tomato, and lots of it. They were open faced and going everywhere! Very tasty though. It also came with a side of chips and some salsa (in a neat "chip" cup). We didn't order drinks, all ordered lunch menu items and the bill came out to around $52.00 with tip. This is the reason I am taking a star off, it was more on the pricey side for lunch for 3. BUT, it was good! So it all worked out in the end.

An environmental/ health conscious person's dream.... Amazing, sustainable food. All homemade sauces/dressings. Spectacular everything. Martinis (blueberry or grapefruit- perfect balance of slightly sweet and citrus), crab cakes, chowder, legit calamari steak strips (not gross tentacle kind). Heaven in summer.

My parents go here for date night whenever they go to 5th Avenue Theatre. Of course, I end up ruining date night by joining them, but it's all in good fun. Duke's has some of the best service with wonderful, smiling people. The Stuffed Halibut is to die for and the calamari is delicious, but you really can't go wrong with anything here. It's great!

It seems like I eat at this place everytime I'm in Seattle. They are pricy - perhaps a bit unjustifiably pricy - but, I do enjoy chowder and have always like their chowder sampler. The service is good - not great, but adequate. Food is better than average. Overall, 3 stars.

I give one star because of the fabulous outdoor patio location on the marina at Lake Union, when the sun is shining, which it was this past Sunday afternoon (about 430pm) when I was there. If not for that and if it were possible, I would give them minus stars. I come originally from Seattle and I lived in the Lake Union/Fremont area and had been to this place, as well as its sister venue in West Seattle, so when the party we were meeting said that's where we were going I tried to steer them elsewhere - my past dining experiences there were pretty mediocre, and there are lots of decent places in the vicinity, but then I thought, well maybe they've cleaned up their act, so give them a chance. First off: great seat outdoors, wonderful company I was with. Male server (youngish, 20s to early 30s), comes along with a put upon harassed air, and asks what we will have to drink. It'shappy hour so I ask "How is the house Chardonnay, do people like it?" ...The server frowns, rolls his eyes, and says - verbatim - "Miss, don't ask me, I'm not a white wine drinker" !!! Okay, I say, I'll have that. I was reeling from the rudeness but I did not reply in kind -- only nice thing he called me "miss'' and that was kind of him. As for the food --- lets just say greasy is an understatement. Cheap grease at that. Not butter, good olive oil, just your basic cheap grease with no redeeming flavor or health benefits. And for the final indignity - the same server in question was quickly replaced by a nicer individual, but then as we were leaving the same rude young man came along and snatched the tip off the table for himself! I didn't see it but two of my sisters did. I guess it must have been his last day or something? Go for a drink or the view but the food. Horrible. I know they are known for the chowder, and I did have it in the past - but the horrific service and questionable cost cutting on other ingredients would make me fear to even eat that again.

I called the night before to reserve a window table for lunch at 2PM. When we got there it was a few minutes before 2 PM and a few minutes before anyone came up to greet us. The person who finally came up didn't even look like he worked there. Regardless, I told him I had reservations for a window table. The host couldn't find my reservation so he asked me who I had spoken with. I told him and then he found my reservation. Needless to say the window tables were all taken. However, he informed us that all of them had already been given their checks so it'd just be a few minutes. It was more than a few minutes but we patiently waited. Finally, one of the staff cleared a table and sat us. My aunt ordered the Dungeness crab and whiskey chowder. She liked it a lot. Her friend had a dessert of some kind of pie a la mode that she enjoyed. I had a cup of Dukes clam chowder and the Dungeness crab melt. My chowder was fine. The crab melt was served on a muffin and was also good. It was an ok experience. The food was fine not great. The service was also fine and not great. Why go there? It has a nice view as do all the restaurants down there. The name is well known so you can reasonably expect a good meal and service. And I'm sure there's some other reason but I can't think of one right now lol. Go figure. Will I go back? Mebbe....

We stayed across the street and found Duke's extremely convenient. The waitress was fun and knowledgeable about food choices and beer flavors. Awesome chowder and fries. I had a mini burger which was the perfect size and the kids ordered from the kids menu and had fresh seafood plates.

I really like that they're experimenting with fusion cooking. But the chowders outside of their original, aren't too tasty.

Fresh sourdough and butter was a delight to eat before our dinner arrived. The chicken club burger with chips was fulfilling and fresh. A good deal for $14.30. Beware unless you like a lot of seasoning on your fries it can be salty an hour after you eat since you might drink 4 glasses of water. The 3 for $20 combo is a very good deal for a hungry person. The northwest chowder was tomato based which had clams and fresh salmon and it felt good to have on a cold night. The ceasar salad was crisp and not toO heavy with dressing or cheese. The third part of the combo was the fish&chips. The cod was well coated and fried and the "chip" or fries were wedgy good.

When I think of Duke's, I think of a nice cold beer on a warm summer day. However, as I found out, it's actually a wonderful "date destination". We were seated upstairs, which was nice for many reasons, including a view of Alki Beach!! The server was fast, the food had huge proportions, and they let me add grilled chicken to a fish dish. I ALSO enjoy that you can feel comfortable going here with any of the following: a) your parents b) your boyfriend or date c) your girlfriends d) your dog (i don't have a dog, but I wanted to make this list a quad.) If you wear jeans or a fancy dress, you will fit in. As Cole Porter would say--"lover-ly".

I went the day before Valentine's Day 2011 and while I was alone, I still enjoyed myself thanks to Dawn, my friendly server. She recommended the Mahi Taco's and, while a little skeptical of the mango chutney, I took her recommendation, and also tried the sample sizes of the Dungeness Crab & Bourbon Chowder, Lobster Pernod Chowder and the Clam Chowder. The Chowders: My favorite by far was the Crab/Bourbon (sweet, savory, and left me wanting more!), then the Lobster (warming, satisfying and quite flavorful), lastly the "Award Winning" Clam (IMHO: not a whole lot to write home about). Mahi Tacos: GENIUS! I love, love, LOVE these tacos. The tender, perfectly cooked Mahi set against white cheddar, chutney and a savory aioli made for a marriage of sweet and savory that is a guaranteed crowd pleaser. I highly recommend Duke's for a casual, tasty dining experience. Enjoy! (thanks, Dawn!)

Alki Beach is an incredible place to hang out with friends, kick back with some friends over beers, and grubbing at Duke's Chowder House. The service is fast. The food is good. The prices are high. I ordered the Dungeness Crab & Bourbon Chowder. It is was hot and delicious. However, 7 dollars plus tax, for a small, small cup of soup is a bit too much. I could of gotten 5 dollar foot long with room to spare. I recommend coming here if you are interested in trying new things, but not if you are on a tight budget.

The item which first attracted me to Duke's was their absolutely awesome "'Duketail" Manhattan which they make with an exceptionally smooth bourbon. Manhattans are my drink of choice and I've never had a better one anywhere. I've become a regular there sampling broadly from the menu, which to me has been at least very good and sometimes remarkably excellent. Their flank steak salad is a particular favorite and they welcome substitutes for the standard blue cheese upon request. Only minor negative is that their customarily good service can slip a notch evenings early in the week when it is not busy and when one of their supervisory managers is not around.

Nice service and enjoyed the lake. The bread is wonderful. Think it's a little pricey for what you get but there were a few gems in the meal. Get the chowder with the bread.... Wonderful. The fish tacos are huge... Huge and so freaking good. I tried the halibut, good but nothing mind blowing. Get the fish tacos.

I've always loved Duke's on Alki---I like it so much I had my rehearsal dinner there before my wedding 3 years ago. However, it pains me to say that I think Duke's is losing is luster. I dined there Tuesday evening and it had been a while since I'd been to Duke's. I was really surprised at how much the quality has changed; the portions are smaller and the prices are higher. I ordered The Duchess Combo and received about one tablespoon of crab on my "crab" melt sandwich. My 10 year old niece ordered a burger off the kids menu. The cheese on her burger still had the parchment paper (that separates the cheese slices) attached to the cheese!! I was so embarassed that I had suggested we eat there! I didn't complain because I was with my family and didn't want to make a big deal out of it. I'm really sad because Duke's used to be one of my favorite places in West Seattle. I hope they can right whatever has gone wrong and go back to being an awesome place for delicious seafood.

We were here for a rehearsal dinner. The service was impeccable for a group of our size (25+ people). The amount of food was astounding! It just kept coming! The fish and chips were good though I wished I had gotten the salmon or another baked fish dish. The appetizers were great and dessert chocolate cake was super decadent. Not sure on the price but for the service, quantity of food, and the whole upstairs I'm sure it was well worth it!

We've eaten here several times, and have never been disappointed. This is not 5 star dining, but the food has been consistently tasty, the waitstaff courteous and helpful, and the views worth every penny. I had a cajun salmon taco with crab chowder, and my wife had almond crusted halibut. I thought my chowder was good until I bit into the fish taco, which was absolutely great! The halibut was cooked just right, and my wife loved it; the asparagus accompaniment was a sublime touch. The wine list will never make it into Wine Spectator, but it is serviceable for the menu, and there should be a beer on the menu for any taste. So, if you want five star dining, go to Salty's on Alki; if you want deep fried, go to Spuds, but if you want above average food with a fabulous view and good service, you can't beat Duke's.

This is a great place for happy hour. For any other time, I would say that it's a bit over-priced. But during happy hour you can get the best bloody mary EVER for just $5. And the strawberry lemon drop tastes like candy in a martini glass (that's a good thing to me). Not to mention that the appetizers are super cheap too, including the delicious and famous clam chowder, which is not in anyway disappointing or overrated. Also the view on the second floor patio is beautiful...during the summer.

    (4)
  • Connie W.

I gave them a star because the food was OK, to much salt but the fish was not greasy, the chowder was good but not great. Worst dining experience I have ever had! We are seated next to the window inside with the sun setting over the water...This should be good, until the manager climbs over our table while we were eating to hang a menu on the window to shade the sun from another patrons eyes. Moving the menu up and down while conversing with the other table and completely ignoring the fact that she is climbing over our food or that we are even sitting there...I expressed our displeasure, her response was rude. Her efforts may have been better spent making sure the windows and silverware were clean and not so much insulting the customer. Before we left she returned to our table and gave us the GM card and said if you do not like it call him. We tried he is not taking calls. I don"t expect 5star service, but I also don't want to be insulted when dining out. The prices are high for what you get, we were at Salty's the night before and for the same price the food and services was 100 times better.

I avoid this place like the plague. I've been here once and have never had my jaw drop so far to the floor as it did when I received my bill here. I don't mind paying a lot of money for good food and great service. However, here you receive minimal (at best) service and food that's not worth the plate they serve it to you on. The only good thing about this place is that it's on Alki. However, this is a place for tourists who don't know any better. If you want great fish and chips go to Spuds, and there are plenty of other place to get seafood on Alki, trust me people Duke's is not worth your money here.

I swear... SF is on the Pacific Ocean... I want Halibut, Wild King Salmon, and other awesome fish at these prices!!! Seriously tho, the Northwest Seafood Chowder was soooo delicious...a huge bowl of that and lots of bread to soak up the rich broth... I would eat it everyday in the winter if I could. We might have gotten something else but I don't remember, the chowder..well cioppino technically...made the rest hazy.... and how convenient to walk off the food coma on across the street along the breezy beach!

We eat at the restaurants on Alki pretty frequently. Dukes is not a regular spot for us, but we do like to have nice dinners here sometimes. Last week, we experienced the best service at Duke's. The food was good too, but the service was so good it stood out to us. Everyone working was friendly, attentive, and on top of things. The management staff was moving around the restaurant talking to patrons happily. Our every need was anticipated. I wish the atmosphere in restaurants always felt this way. When we left, all we could talk about was how crazy good the service was (which rarely...pretty much never happens after we have gone out to eat). That said, who ever is "in charge" right now has created a really stellar team and we will be eating there more often. Oh, and we highly recommend the lobster chowder and the grapefruit nirvana is always tasty!

I'm sort of torn about which way to go with this review. On the one hand, there's the fact that I had an absolutely wonderful dinner with my boyfriend and his grandparents. The food was delicious, our waitress was prompt and attentive, and we had a fantastic time. My Dungeness Crab & Seafood Pot Pie was soso tasty and the Volcano Cake was to die for. On the other hand, we were seated in a very noisy booth that looked into the kitchen, the prices were rather high, and my boyfriend was up at 2am, puking up his Cioppino which apparently was filled with bad seafood. Honestly, it's a tossup. 2.5 stars.

A trip to Alki with Uhura (her first time!!) on a sunny day a week or so ago brought me here again. This is a favorite stop for Keomarie and I whenever we've hit Alki (esp since that fab cuban place closed). We were sat on the upper balcony, which is beautiful, albeit a bit breezy at times. When Allison R was able to join us with the lovely Lola, the staff opened up the sidewalk level seating just for us. I went with the top sirloin dinner, the killer prawns and an orange mojito. The steak was fabulous, the prawns indeed killer, but the drink...meh. My second was following Uhura's lead with a Basil Bliss...and mmmmmmm, definitely blissful. The wait staff was very friendly, and handled the check split and all else very well. Occasionally waited a little long for things we ordered or requested, but I chalk that up to us being the only outdoor table at sidewalk level. I've never had a bad experience here, and don't intend to. :)

Have you ever been the third wheel on a date? Have you ever sat and watched two people flirt, giggle and run off to the bathroom to wash their hands? Have you ever watched a woman giggle, decide to not order dinner and say "You know how food tastes so much better when I steal it off your plate..." (Henceforth, I vow to NEVER use this phrase in mixed company) Yeah, if this tableau is going to unfold in front of your eyes, you had better be sitting at Duke's drinking a stiff drink and eating some awesome chowder. The food and the view of the mountains majestically framing the sun glint water will save you from thoughts of slitting your wrists. Now for the food: My two Chowder Sampler: The Dungeness Crab in one bowl and the Lobster Pernod in the other - both amazing. The crab is a subtle chowder, and the Lobster is a rich deep chowder. Together, they were a great pairing and after eating both, I was hankering for more. The pistachio pesto salmon was delicious and perched atop a bed of creamy veggie orzo that was very filling. The Long Island Iced Teas meh - not the greatest BUT - the Waitress who saw me suffering in silence, and quickly offered to get me another drink - well, she was AMAZING!

I've only recently started dining at Duke's Chowder House and my experience has been different every time.. 2 out of 3 times, the host/hostess was not at the podium. I stood at the front for quite a while before anyone acknowledge me. The drinks and bread service was slow. Asking for refills on both required a lot of prompting and reminding. The clam chowder was ok, not great, but ok. For an award winning chowder, I guess I expected exceptional and I was a little disappointed. First time at Duke's, I ordered their Wild Copper River Salmon pasta and was sorely disappointed. I would've enjoyed it more if there was actually any flavor to the pasta. Decided to give them another try but this time, I ordered their stuffed salmon. Saving grace right there! The salmon was fresh, the potatoes were delicious, and the dungeness crab stuffing could've used more flavor but overall, it was pretty good. I will continue going back when I have a craving for stuffed salmon!

Great staff and very cool on the inside down at Duke's. I like to sit up on the top patio when its summer for happy hour. I haven't done it for a few years, but that's a must when you're there. The food is really good, don't think I have had a bad thing there ever. Staff is friendly and the only thing I would say I don't really agree with is the price. But that's not bad really in my mind. Just think its a little pricey for the food. Overall very good time there.

My Dad and I stopped in for a little bite to hold us over until dinner. I always love Duke's chowder so we went in. We both ordered the chowder samplers. I got the three and he got two. They brought out the fresh sourdough bread to snack on while the chowders were plated. Our chowders came out and they were great. I had the original which is a white clam that is full of flavor and lots of clam meat. My second was the Pacific Northwest which is a Ciopino full of salmon, halibut, clams, and mussles. That was great lots of flavor and great broth. The last of mine was the clam and corn. It was a nice variant to the original chowder but just wasn't on par with the other two. Overall great views of Seattle and good food.

Good food but high prices. I had the chowder and fish and chips combo. Both were ok, expected more from what everyone says. But I wouldn't have a problem going back, overall a good experience. Staff was mostly helpful, great location and very busy at times.

The award-winning clam chowder is absolutely fantastic, if a bit pricey. The salad with the bleu cheese and grapefruit is amazing too (though I usually get it without the cheese). The first time I went to Duke's, I actually didn't get the chowder but got a prawns-stuffed-with-crabmeat special. Really, really delicious. And it was on a cold dark night when the place was pretty deserted, so the experience was pretty much perfect.

Their food is good, their chowder certainly does taste great. That being said, I think that their prices are rather high for what you get. Overall though, my experiences at Duke's have been great. The service is generally fast yet attentive. I don't think I'd go out of my way to go eat here, but it's definitely worth a shot if you're in the area.

Pretty pricey normally, but if you wanna spend the food never dissapoints. I've aways had sweet, attentive servers here. My fav is the happy hour though. Yummy apps are $4. I get the chowder, crab dip, tuna wasabi quesadillas, salmon lettuce wraps, sometimes the clams..... yes and that is all just for me. OH! Nice drinks too. I like the cucumber martini and the pomakazi

Good place to take a group on Alki Beach to eat out. Good burgers and fish & chips which I thought was appropriate fare for the surrounding area. The sourdough bread appetizers were devoured in sec's, someone commented it was better then the sourdough they had in San Francisco. I thought my crab chowder could have been more tastier but I really enjoyed my blue-cheese burger, there's just something about the salty air that makes you super hungry, and Dukes will fill you right up.

The white chowder at Duke's on Alki is my favorite place so far to have clam chowder. It's nice and thick with lots of chunks and not cheap on the clams either. They will sometimes have a deep fried oysters plate on the seasonal menu...YUM. I've been to the Duk's in Tukwila and the food there is not as good as the food at Alki.

Yum the chowder is so good here! You simply cannot go to Duke's with out having a cup or a bowl! My other favorite on their menu is their Blackened Salmon Lettuce Shoots. Yummy, just thinking about them makes my mouth water. My other favorite part about Duke's specifically the one on Alki, is the the bar tender on the weekends there, his name is Andrew he is such a classy guy, and a great conversationalist I might add!

4 stars for being what it is: a local place for great American grub. Tasty appies, good burgers of all sorts, decent fish & chips, nice pasta even! Best of all- strong drinks and nibbles al fresco facing a lovely sunset. Or for chillier happy hours- the bar faces the water for some of the most scenic Slippery Nipples I've had!

I only had drinks at this place, so I cant really say how awesome or un-awesome it is. BUT the cucumber mojitos were delish! And even though they were super refreshing and super yummy... They were super expensive. Me and a few friends had a few drinks and ended up spending almost $100. It was ridiculous. So aside from the price which made me cringe, it was good. Also sitting outside on a nice day is almost worth it... almost.

One of my favorite spots on Alki their steamers are by far my favorite in town. If you take some of the garlic that in with the steamers and smear it on a piece of buttered sourdough bread you'll be happy happy happy, at least I am. Their chowders are awarding winning and once you've tasted them you can figure out why. Oh and how can I forget their seafood chop chop salad so good and fresh I love it too. They have a nice happy hour as well and if you sign up for their newsletter you receive e-mails for half price meals or buy one get one free it's a pretty good deal.

I've been to this Duke's a couple of times. Really great food! Duke's Award Winning Clam Chowder is the best I've ever had. The main entrees can be pretty pricey, but they're well worth it. But really, the chowder is the reason to go.

Went during happy hour. Ordered appetizers, beers, and burgers/ sandwiches off the happy hour menu. My husband and our friend ordered BBQ bacon burgers, and received burgers with neither bacon nor BBQ sauce on them. Not that big of a deal so we kept quiet on that. The server was pleasant throughout the meal, however when we got the bill the Grilled Chicken Club I ordered was priced at $14 when I orderd it off of the happy hour menu ($6). When I politely brought this to the servers attention she said no that was for the BBQ Chicken sandwich. So, I asked to see the happy hour menu, pointed out that what I ordered was on it. She then quite rudely said, "Okay, I'll fix it for you" and walked away. She brought the bill back and didn't say a word to us, I said thank you and she ignored that. Rude! She went to get change, I thanked her again when she came back and again no acknowledement that I even existed. I shouldn't have tipped her at all! Don't go to the Duke's on Alki!

Watch out for this one. A bonfire on the beach is a better option. Pros: - great views Cons: - inexperienced waitstaff -noise from sportbikes/ bass from tricked out rides kills atmosphere - food sits under heatlamp - Fish and chips was dried out and coleslaw was just gross I'm not a picky guy, but this place didn't do it for me. The Greenlake location may be better, but I would skip Alki.

Ya know, for some reason I don't want to give it a good review, but I can't help it. Duke's has good food.
