Authenticity is key at Sushi Kuine. Owner/Chef is always warm and friendly, but don't ask him to customize your order. He sticks to the books, which means no spoons for miso, and all nigiri will come with wasabi already inside. Everything is always fresh and tender and not outrageously priced. I would go here over Blue C or anywhere else nearby for that matter.

Wonderful place, quiet, great sushi, amazing flavor will definitely be back, they also have take out. This is very traditional Japanese sushi.

Being new to the area, the wife and I were searching for a suitable replacement for quality sushi. We are so glad we found this place! It's cozy, clean, fresh fish, and super affordable - just remember to bring cash or hit the ATM at one of the nearby banks.

I have visited many sushi places around Puget Sound area and this is the only place I will go for Sushi. I have been going for years. The best quality sushi for a reasonable price. Always fresh and delicious. This IS the place to go to get sushi.

Hope you like wasabi. It's not listed as an ingredient on many of the rolls, but comes on them anyway. Maybe it's more "authentic", but I didn't appreciate the surprise. I also thought the California rolls had too much dressing. On the plus side, it is super cheap.

I haven't been to this place in a while, but I just got a hankering for some sushi so it made me think of this place. Christmas Eve of 2012 was the last time we were here and we were happy to share it with Kazu! The sushi was quick, delicious and fresh, prepared right in front of you. We took our order to go so we could enjoy the festivities. Cash only and huge portion sizes! I think I may go tomorrow. :)

Great sushi + reasonable price = Excellent Value. The quality of food you get for the price you pay is unbelievable. All the praise goes to the chef/owner! This place is a traditional Japanese family restaurant, and the owner really deliver wonder dining experience. A real Japanese sushi chef who knows his stuff. The food and the dining experience is so good that I have to give my first 5 star reviews. I'll definitely be back frequently!

Love this place! I'd recommend it to anyone. The place is just the right size. The owner is personable. Like others said, it's CASH only. Lots of banks around. Sushi places nearby are not as good as this one.

My favorite Sushi spot! My husband and I love to eat here and learn about sushi from Kazu. When it's not busy he will teach you Japanese and other fun facts about Japanese culture. The fish is excellent and the price cannot be beat. The people who wrote bad reviews are probably high maintenance, fast paced people. Sushi Kuine is a one man show, so bring your patience and relax :)

A friend wanted to try Kuine due to its good yelp reviews so we met up there for lunch and it turned out to be a very bad experience. -Selection is rather limited and not very kid friendly -Presentation was sloppy/unattractive -Sushi looked and tasted NOT fresh -Service attitude is incredibly rude "customer is always wrong by default" - if you ever get a piece of bad sushi, they would rather insult you and tell you that you don't know how fresh fish taste like or you just don't know how to appreciate the taste of their "fresh fish". The place is very small with just a few tables. I arrived early just a bit before noon when there was no customers. I smiled and waved at the owner only to be greeted with a stone cold face. We asked for tamago, ikura, and edamame but they told us they had none of those. Since there was no eggs for the kids, we ordered imitation crab sushi but the imitation crab sticks turned out to be so cold, hard and dried-up that the kids were reluctant to eat them. I pointed at the sashimi lunch plate and ordered it but the server somehow got it wrong gave me the nigiri lunch plate instead (which was on a different page on their menu). I bit into my first piece of nigiri sushi and it tasted very strongly of a strange bad moldy taste (like a bad moldy tomato). I tried another piece of sushi on my combo plate and it tasted fine so I just Informed the server that there was 1 particular piece I had was bad and wanted it replaced. Instead of doing the right thing and simply replaced one piece of bad sushi, the chef/owner and his wife (?) started an adamant argument and insisted there can be nothing wrong with their sushi and it could only be something wrong with my taste. It was an incredibly rude and insulting way to treat a customer. They never offer any apologies but consistently showed that they hold a very strong assumption that their local customers are utterly ignorant about sushi and totally unable to tell the difference between fresh fish and fish that's turned bad. I was trying to have a pleasant lunch with my friend and family but they just kept coming back to argue and made it a very unpleasant experience and it was totally unnecessary. They were very presumptuous in talking to me and my husband ( who speaks fluent Japanese) like this was our very first time ordering and eating sushi while we have been eating sushi regularly our whole lives, in the U.S., and other countries including Japan. We really wanted to like this place. Too bad everything turned out to be so below bar. With plenty of other sushi restaurants of better food quality and service attitude, needless to say, we will not be eating at Kuine again.

I stopped in here for dinner; it is a very small place. It was filed with a group of about 10 young people, obviously having a great time. Fortunately, there was a place at the bar. The service here is good; i was quickly provided a glass of warm green tea. Throughout, the service was good. So was the miso. This is a sushi place. There are a couple of donburi offerings, but this is a place to get sushi or sashimi; I ordered sashimi. My big complaint here is the fish was still a bit frozen when it was served. I do not think i have ever been served fish that was still partially frozen ever before, certainly not when i was in Japan. Nor anywhere on the west coast, where i have had sushi or sashimi. The next time I am in the area, i think i will look for somewhere else for sushi. Too bad, because this could be a very unique place.

This place is outstanding! Very small hole-in-the-wall type of place. Don't expect to go with a large group, only about 6 at the bar, and maybe about 6 more at the other 2 small tables. And Cash Only. If you like to watch a master prepare Nigiri, this is the place. If you are looking for a huge selection or California rolls, or deep fried rolls, go somewhere else. Kazu (the chef) strives to bring his customers the best, hand picked quality of fish. If it's not on the menu, or in the display case, then it wasn't up to his high standards of quality. Service is wonderful, fast and always courteous. Kazu is very attentive and wants to make sure you have everything you need to enjoy his sushi. If you are unsure on the proper way to eat sushi or want to know what a certain item is, just ask. He is willing to educate you so you have an enjoyable experience. And in my experience, I have even been given items for free, just because I asked what it was and he wanted to see if I liked it. There isn't any alcohol, but who wants to taint the delicate flavors that swirl around your mouth with every piece of sushi you have. The green tea and ginger provided to every person are palate cleansers so you can have a fresh palate for the next piece of sushi you bite into. Who would want to disrupt that perfect balance!? I can't say enough good things about Sushi Kuine. All I know is that I won't be going into Seattle to have a $90 plus bill for 2 people with sushi that isn't as good as this place. And I can easily walk out of here for $40 for 2 and be full. I will be going back very soon. Oh and try the Special Salmon, It's AMAZING!

If AUTHENTIC sushi, and ONLY sushi is what you're after .. this is the place. Sushi Kuine is a small, traditional Japanese restaurant in old downtown Kent. It's not for group dining whatsoever, seeing that it only fits maybe 20-25 people max, and there is only one chef. That being said, this place is all about quality, not quantity. Although the sushi IS very reasonably priced and very fresh. The rolls are big and the sashimi is cut thick. Mos def a mom and pop spot. Make sure you bring cash! Cash only!

  • Ali F.

I always love this place every time I go in whether it be to just pick up to go, eat in, or a party platter. Food is fresh and delish! If you are in the area def go here! Mom and Pop shop! Made in front of you! CASH ONLY!

Just moved to the area from California and decided it was time to try some damned sushi in this town! I yelped for the closest sushi spot and found this place...I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the prices. Never in my life have I been to a sushi place with such low prices for rolls and pieces. At first I thought, "Okay, this is probably going to be some bad quality sushi." Boy, was I wrong! I Ordered a gang of sushi and was extremely satisfied! My stomach was full, and the prices kept my wallet full too. Five Boun stars due to great tasting sushi at incredible prices.

Authentic sushi in old downtown Kent. Don't order off printed menu - order off fresh sheet. All prepared by chef Kuine. Why 4 stars? Rice in roll oh-so-slightly not-sticky. You like sushi - no reason to fly to Tokyo - go to Kuine in Kent. I'm addicted.

WELL WORTH GETTING CASH FROM THE ATM!! Amazing Sushi Chef, Kazu. He served hot tea, (which he made himself, and served himself!), Miso soup, and I simply said to him which fish I really liked, and he made up quite a few Nigiri for me. Absolutely some of the freshest fish I have ever had! the other customer's were just as in awe as we were! I never would have known such a quaint little "Mom and Pop" place existed in Kent, WA! Arrigato! Kazu-san! **I laughed out loud at the review that stated the chef had told them "Tonight is Take Out only" We didn't have that problem! :)

  • Irene M.

We arrived with our son in tow and were told "Sorry we're closed, we're out of rice." :/ You're a sushi restaurant and you're out of rice? And you say this with customers in your store, hours before closing, the open sign up AND as you're making sushi right in front of us? Don't bother coming here if you have kids, no matter how well behaved. A couple of other reviews on here give the same warning. And I doubt we'll come back even without our son, if this is how rude and dishonest they are.

  • Yvonne C.

I really wanted to like this place, but it was really just "ok". The restaurant has so much potential...I really like the space for how quaint / small it is. The sushi bar seats 6 and there are 3-4 tables. Kazu (the sushi chef) runs the show. The menu is very simple with nigiri, maki rolls, and a few more "americanized" rolls. Another plus. The rice is perfect, too. Now to the bad - The fish is served way too cold. My first bite into my Red Snapper and my teeth hurt from how cold the fish was - While the fish is pretty good quality, the cuts were very thin and very small. This may be partly due to the price. He charges $2.99 for two pieces of nigiri. I would much prefer he charge $4-$5 and give a bigger cut - The nigiri had waaayyyy too much wasabi. I'm a fan of wasabi but it needs to be balanced and not overpowering. On a side note, the saba was amazing. Definitely try it if you go there. It was a nice thick, oily cut. Yum!

One man show, consistent quality, cash only, small sitting area, and if it isn't on the menu he doesn't have it. His prices are fantastic. My wife and I are regulars and have now learned "the rules." He's not talkative but it's not personal (my theory is that he doesn't really like adults-- he is super nice to kids), don't ask for stuff that's not on the menu, he doesn't have beer or wine, his hours are strict, and it's cash only (there's a cash machine directly across the street). Also, he doesn't have the variety a bigger place would have and is missing some of my favorites (space limitations I'm guessing). Let me be clear that I like him, his food, and his restaurant but if you are person who likes to be kissed up to, or if you like restaurants to bend to your will, you are not going to like this place. I agree with the other reviews that his sushi is often too cold, and he does use too much wasabi. Still good though! Just not great.

Best sushi within 30 miles North, South, East or West of Kent, and probably further. Fresh sashimi, fresh miso, prompt and quick service, and a Master sushi chef who knows what he is doing. The chef serves a very affordable and high variety lunch and dinner platter. The cuts of fish are fresh and thick, albeit sometimes a little cold. The ambiance is very muted, quiet and Japanese, nice for an individual lunch, or for a quiet place to bring someone to chat with. I really have no complaints. For a more detailed and accurate review that really captures the nuances of this place well, look at M.S.'s review. I do, however, disagree on his overall rating, as every piece of sushi I've ever been served there was brilliant.

This is my favorite sushi restaurant. The miso here is the best I've had. The vegetarian plate is very good and very reasonably priced.

In town for a few days for work. Glad I drove out of my way for this place. Only one other customer in the place when I made it in near closing. I let the owner make the choices for me. Had a great tuna nigiri with a touch of fresh mint on top. It was awesome. Great spot, ill be back before I leave town. Cash only!

Such a great night! We walked in, with 20 minutes to close, and ended up staying and chatting with the amazing chef, who taught us a thing or two about being professional sushi eaters. :) Try the special Salmon nigiri. No wasabi or soy sauce. So worth it!

Sushi Kuine is some of the best sushi I've ever had. I actually just got back from there and had to write this review. Apparently rainy Wednesday nights are the time to go because the place was empty. I thought for a second as I drove up to it it might be closed, which would have made me sad since I tried going on Monday...when they actually are closed. I ordered the dinner plate which comes with 9 pieces of sushi of the chefs choice and 4 California rolls. Since he chose what I got to eat I really had no idea what I had. I could pick out a few of them but I didn't really care...it was all awesome. He really is a skilled sushi chef. Watching him make it right in front of you is really cool. It also comes with some miso soup (which was also delicious) and he was constantly coming around the counter to refill my tea from his teapot. This place just screams authentic and I loved it. I gave him an extra tip just in case nobody else came in that night.

A weekly lunch time favorite of mine. Beautiful FRESH SUSHI every time. The owners are like family when you walk in they make you comfortable and serve tea. The Wahhabi is the best I've ever had, so creamy and powerful! Thanks for many great laughs had over sushi:)

This place was recommended to us by a friend who lives in the area. Its now our go-to sushi spot - there is no where else for us. Kazu greets you with a smile every time, right before he builds you some beautiful sushi! He's all about quality and will educate you on how to tell good sushi from bad, how you should eat it for maximum enjoyment...he's the real deal and he's in downtown Kent. This place is the ultimate hole-in-the-wall, diamond-in-the-rough, absolute GEM of a sushi place. The quality is amazing and the prices are incredibly reasonable, being only a hair more than you'll pay at the "conveyor belt" sushi places.

AMAZING that is all I have to say! Real Sushi not cooked with real Wasabi not powdered! Kazu called my husband Mr. Wasabi & everytime your wasabi makes you cry he smiles and says u ok!

BEST SUSHI EVER. This little gem will be my judgment for sushi for the rest of my life. It just so happens that this is the first place I tried sushi about 10 years ago and I've recommended this place to friends and family since. The rice is perfect. There's something about it, the way he cooks it and seasons it, perfect. The vegetables he puts in the rolls are always market fresh and super crunchy. The fish is spot on as well. Melt in your mouth Tuna, ah, I'm in love. It's very small and quant and I like that. It hasn't changed since the first time I went, and honestly, I don't think the prices have either. We tipped him very well and he said "too much" and tried to give us money back. Of course, we declined. You seriously can't beat this little gem. I bow to Kazu and his magical sushi making skills. I have yet to find better.

Kazu, the owner, and his rice, is the reason nowhere else that serves sushi will ever get 5 stars. EVER.... only him. This man and his sushi and rice, is a legend, or atleast should be. Hands down, the absolute best sushi i've ever had in my life, and I was raised on this stuff! Such a kind man... I've known him for over 10 years :) Perfect for super small groups, or a laid back date.... small little restaurant and its a one man show. So, bring patience. He does a fantastic job everytime. My grandmother still lives in Kent and goes to see Kazu quite often, to this day. Oh and bring cash--- no debit or credit accepted.

I think my experience here suffered from inflated expectations. I figured sushi on the west coast would be far superior to what I can get at home (St Louis). Also, this place has one of the highest ratings in Seattle here on Yelp. So I finally found the place (somewhat outside of the city center), but it was closed (Monday). So I came back the next day. The couple running the place were super friendly, and I loved the little spot. Tiny little place, had loads of charm. It was exactly what I'd picture a place in Tokyo looking like. Never been to Tokyo, so I'll just have to imagine. I ordered some rolls and watched him skillfully make them. My mouth was watering; I had anticipated this moment for nearly a month since planning my itinerary for Seattle restaurants. In the end, the rolls were good, and they were fresh, but I guess I was expecting some kind of sushi revelation. That it was not. It was good, competent sushi, and nothing more. It was cheap, too. If I lived here, you can bet I'd come in somewhat regularly and maybe I'd find some things on the menu that would knock my socks off. But as it stands, I had one shot at this place. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing, maybe I prefer more Americanized sushi (but I'd be ashamed if that were true), I don't know. The California roll was ok, the rainbow roll was my favorite because I could actually taste the freshness of the fish. The two others, don't remember what they were, were actually kind of boring and didn't do much for me. In the end I was somewhat underwhelmed. I'd love to go back and give it another chance, but seeing as how I live 1500 miles away, it'll be a while. Too bad.

  • Melinda S.

I ate the sashimi dinner plate here today and was very disappointed. Every piece of sashimi was frozen. I don't mean previously frozen, I mean still frozen, like raw fish sorbet. Disgusting. I spoke to the sushi chef (owner) about it and he said it would be dangerous to eat sashimi that was not frozen. How stupid does he think I am? I have eaten sushi and sashimi since the 1960s without getting sick. It's supposed to be fresh, not frozen. It just isn't worth the expense; go elsewhere. Oh, also, they only accept cash.

  • Grace L.

I really enjoy this little place -- I love the days that I work hours that give me a lunchtime break so I can enjoy the delicious sushi and great service at this little restaurant. I was introduced to it by some co-workers, and we like to make a group trip down for spicy tuna rolls and other lunch favorites (I particularly enjoy the sashimi lunch plate). The space is REALLY small, but if you have a decent-sized group they'll set you up just outside in the breezeway (which isn't so bad unless it's cold outside). The only thing you must remember is that they ONLY take cash, so be prepared for that--being the convenience-focused person that I am, I'd probably take a half star off for that if I could, but otherwise this is one of my favorite places and I hate to give them a lower rating for something I can deal with if I just plan ahead.

  • Andy J.

If anyone ever wants authentic budget minded sushi, Sushi Kuine is the place. When introduced, I had my doubts. I'll reiterate what other reviewers have said that have lived in Japan or visited sushi restaurants there. I myself have had the honor and opportunity to eat authentic sushi in Japan and not to beat a dead horse but the quality is just as solid. When asked, Chef Kazuyuki makes a conscious effort to ensure that the customer gets the best bang for the buck. Hearing that from the chef himself especially with how authentic the sushi is made is truly a sight to behold. No compromises. That's the standard at Sushi Kuine. Any sushi you eat will be large thick pieces, supremely high quality, and the rice will be compacted perfectly. There is one negative but not one that pertains to myself and the wife. If you have children or have a large party then Sushi Kuine may not be the place foryou considering they only have about 12 seats available including the sushi bar. If you are going for the first time or read my review and are heading back, ask for the 'Special Salmon' or 'Vegetarian Sushi'. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

If you want authentic sushi, go here! I'm absolutely in love with sashimi, and sushi Kuine has delicious sashimi! The salmon and yellowtail melts in your mouth. My friend and I went around 1pm, prime time! No wait, and the sushi chef was so attentive and very nice. I will definitely be back here! No more driving all the way to Seattle for good sushi.

I love having a sushi restaurant in our great city of Kent. Owners are great and food is authentic and fantastic! Only one time, Saki (salmon) was not as fresh (oils) as usual.

  • Michelle F.

This place was great! After reading all of the positive reviews on here, I just had to check it out, and it did not disappoint. The owner was so kind and accommodating. We had the California Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, and the Kent Roll. All three were delicious, and probably the freshest sushi I've had. He made each roll fresh to order, and was pretty speedy. The prices were very reasonable. I am definitely going back there again soon, and would recommend it to anyone who likes good sushi!

honesty is the best policy: 2 stars for restaurant plus 1 more for weird deco. if you like plain sushi rolls, go for it. if you like any combo of salmon, cucumber, crab stick, cream cheese, and masago, this is the place. not like any other place, it's not even authentic. i've been to japan and in japan, they don't serve rolls (unless it's the basic roll). so if they have california rolls, honey, that ain't authentic (sumimasen). what i did enjoy about this place, located in a small cutesy building and the decor is off but in a weird nostalgic way... and for the price, i can't complain.

I've been to a lot of sushi places in Kent and this is my favorite so far. It's a small little place tucked away by Joanns. The service is always quick and consistent. The food is made fairly quick considering it's all made to order. Great value for the price! Came in when I was just getting over a bad flu and it felt very cozy and welcoming. I'll definitely be back frequently!

  • Gabriella W.

This is me and the BF's favorite place. We like it most when there's nobody in there, it feels so intimate!! The owner is the chef, cashier, and waiter all at one. So, the place is small... It looks somehow very Japanese-y and when I'm in there, I don't feel like I am in Kent. My favorite is the sashimi platter. It comes with rice and miso. That's what I always order when I come here. The fish is fresh, and served in an artsy way. The miso is perfect! I usually order skinny rolls to the side. Even though their unagi is not the best, but it's worth the price! I would give 5 stars for the ambience but 4 for the food

  • Scott D.

This is a small quaint little place that is more traditional Japanese than most. Most places that I have been to aren't even Japanese owned, so this was refreshing. He does offer some American style maki rolls but why wouldn't he, they are very popular and what most Americans prefer them over nigri or sashimi. The thing that surprised me is that sushi is ALL you will find here besides maybe some miso and edamame. That is great for me but unfortunately the sushi choices were pretty limited. Some of my favorites were not available... Ikura (salmon roe), Toro (fatty tuna), Ama-ebi (sweet shrimp). The fish was extremely cold and borderline frozen, so I am not sure what to think about it. I liked the fact that it was kept very cold but I would never want it frozen. The price was very good and I like how he doesn't dress up every order of sushi. He will make up an order and just throw it on my plate. All that dressing up and extra dishes adds to extra cost. When it comes to sushi I would prefer freshness, selection, and cost. I will give Kazu another go as it is the closest thing to a real sushi bar I have found in Kent.

As good as it gets....in the city and surrounding area of Kent. We had the special last night....terrific....but the night got even better when the owner made us surf clam and then salmon with sea salt sushi. Sushi Kuine is small....personal....and the antithesis of the big conveyor belt shop across town. We have been eating authentic Japanese food for six decades. This is our local favorite. We were the only one's there when we arrived, but three more couples came in while we were eating. A good time was had by all. As in most sushi establishments....eat at the bar if you can. The owner is really nice, skilled and has been at this location for 12 years. Oh, and he is old school....cash only...no credit or debit cards. It's one of the ways he tries to keep his prices down.

Sushi Kuine is BY FAR my favorite place to have sushi in the South King County area. My husband and I have tried almost all of the places around and none even compare! We've asked the owner what his secret is, and his response was "freshness." This is very true since his sushi is noticeably the freshest around. We also enjoy the larger portions, better prices, and exceptional service. Something worth noting is that Sushi Kuine is a small restaurant and not prepared for large groups.

This place rocks. We have been here approximately 5 or 6 times in the last 7 months, and I have recommended this place to everyone I know who loves sushi. It also has quite the reputation with Kent locals (of which I am formerly one of). I don't know what he does - but his fish is absolutely the freshest ever. We order salmon ngiri every time, and it comes out melting like butter. The spicy tuna is actually pretty dang spicy! Everything is delicious, and the servings are ample and affordable. You do need to remember to bring cash, although there is an ATM across the street at the bank. They have limited seating and hours, but if you can plan ahead for any weeknight, the place is pretty subdued and you can get in to eat immediately. I highly highly recommend this restaurant.

This place has got to be one of the best kept secrets in Kent. Sushi Kuine is run by a lovely man who takes his sushi to a new level and truly knows the art of making a good roll. Master doesn't even begin to describe how seriously he takes his selection. His ingredients are so fresh and he is so popular that if you don't arrive in time to grab one of the 13 seat in this tiny shop you will most likely be out of luck. The unique creations and wide variety on his menu leaves you with the opportunity to try a little of everything. I might add bring cash as he does not accept cards or checks, but it is well worth the trip to experience this hidden gem. I am reluctant to brag to highly due to the fact that I may not be able to find room in my favorite little sushi spot.

Still going here all the time! I took my co-workers here and they thought it was really good sushi. Only downside was one of them forgot to bring cash..

This is a fantastic little spot just a few blocks from the Kent Station. Been open for 9 years now. THE freshest seafood around! Kazu is a sushi master from Japan. It is hard to go out to other places for sushi now. You can get his Lunch special for just 8.95 which includes 6 piece assortment of fish, 4 piece cali roll and miso soup and tea.

Good place for authentic sushi. The price points for this place are pretty on par with others, if not slightly cheaper. Minus a star for no booze... I could have really used an ice cold Asahi with my awesome sushi.

I was born in Japan and love this little "Mom and Pop" restaurant, it reminds me of home. It is a sushi place --- if it's sushi you want, (real) sushi you get. Even though they make California Rolls --- you realize - it's not from Japan . . . as the name implies it's from (Southern) California. It's an inside-out maki-zushi. The restaurant is small and the decor is the turn of the 20th century modern Japan. It's not for the novice; you need to be a little knowledgeable --- but they do have special sushi plates for those who have difficulty in ordering sushi and willing to try whatever comes. I also like their fresh water eel dish (Unagi Don) . . . perhaps the most expensive item on the menu . . . about $15. The (two huge plump) fresh water eel (Unagi) is barbequed over a hot hibachi grill and painted with a sweet sugar and soy-sauce combination, sprinkled with white sesame seeds. The eels are laid over a bed of white steamed rice in a black lacquer container, supposedly a donburi (Don). The (pure, boneless) filleted meat falls apart as you pick it up with your chopstick and literally melts in your mouth. Not a hint of fish flavor or odor. . . the flavor is unique and to die for, it's rich in fat and perhaps not the greatest choice for your cardiac care . . . once you get over the idea that the eel looks too much like a rattle snake --- enjoy.

After camping out for the last four days, we were craving some sushi. We happened to find this place and decided to give it a try. We were the only people in but were immediately served hot green tea. We ordered four rolls for the two of us and it ended up costing $21. For that price you'd expect them to be tiny or really old fish but these were HUGE rolls and super fresh. If we ever go back to Kent we're stopping by here again.

The best sushi in Washington State. Authentic and fresh. Contrary to the one 2 star review, Kazu loves kids. I take my two boys in for lunch every Saturday after their karate class and he treats them like his own. Sometimes he is so busy that customers will be turned away. He is just being honest and wouldn't want you waiting for a long time like other restaurants that would tell you 15 minutes then you have to wait for an hour.....especially if you have kids!!! Again, best sushi, VERY reasonable prices!!!!!!

Such great sushi for an amazing price. Really fast service. The two owners were really nice The restaurant is very small and could possibly get busy very fast but because the restaurant is in Kent and not in a great location I don't think it ever gets too busy. Cash only Lunch special is fantastic deal. I would recommend that definitely

Arrived at 630 to the open sign in window as well as "People Love Us on Yelp" sticker. No one inside, plenty of free parking. Walked in and owner pops up and says, "We're closed." You're closed on Sundays? We leave hungry and call from another sushi restaurant. "Are you open right now?" "Yes, open now" "We were just there and you said you're closed today!" "Oh that was you? We're closing in 30 minutes." WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?! Is it the color of my skin? Is it because we have a kid? Is it because you pick and choose your customers as you please? Can the NAACP or klan come here? Biker gang or crips? What is the criteria to get served here??

Weak food. Weak service. I think Safeway has fresher sushi. I felt sick after eating here and wouldn't return again.

Wasabi! This place uses the good stuff. Made my nose burn in that good way. Don't expect any crazy fancy BS rolls. This is just simple real good sushi. Nigiri $2.99 an order and good fish is what will keep me coming back. No alcohol no teriyaki just sushi.

Came here on a Sunday at 5:00, was greeted with a smile as I sat myself down. I usually eat sushi at Maneki or Tsukishinbo but I wasn't gonna be in that area so I came here as my mom told me about this place. The price for nigiri is great, at $2.99 per order it's priced the same as sushiland and cheaper than trapper's. Though the choice in fish is relatively limited, I understand Kazu's difficulty in obtaining more special species as this is Kent - gonna be hard to find chutoro cuts and uni pieces that aren't frozen and boxed wal-mart style. Everytime I go to a new sushi place I order Saba. It's my way of testing the person behind the knife, as mackerel isn't a popular fish and it's easy to make nasty (i.e. too briny). For example, if you get saba at sushiland, genki, trapper's, whatever, you'll essentially be eating a sea salt bomb with a deep, dank, fishy fallout that can rival a long day at the gym in leather pants. Kuine's saba is cool, not too much brine as to overpower the mackerel's fattiness, not that fishy at all either. Granted it's not as tasty as my go-to spots, but for the area this is awesome. Fish and rice portions are good. I ate full for $19.56 after tax eating nothing but nigiri orders. To put that into perspective I am a 6', 21 y.o. male who runs once a week. If you want some ordering advice, the tuna is lean. If you are one to hunt for chutoro or otoro, ask to see the tuna strip first because, again, this is Kent and fatty pieces of tuna are rarer than an honest politician, though the former is actually possible to find. Come here instead of Trapper's, open your stomach's eyes, be happy. Cash only.

I got burned by their random business hours too. I think their food must be really good. The boss was in there but he locked the door before his lunch hours are up and was taking a nap in there. It's like he doesn't give a shit. While i was there, there was another guy also was looking at the closed and locked door and looking at his watch appeared puzzled.

Finally had the chance to eat at this sushi cafe. Small and intimate setting. The sushi chef has a clean, simple and fresh style. I will be back for sure. Far from the americanized sushi craze going around and I was OK with that. I actually enjoyed it more.

We came in for dinner tonight and both got the $13.95 dinner special a California roll and 9 pieces of nigiri with miso soup and green tea. The sushi was delicious and fresh. Everything else on the menu was really affordable. The guy that owns the restaurant (I think) was the same guy preparing our food and helping us. He was friendly and seemed pretty nice.

This place is a hidden GEM located in downtown Kent. This is the only sushi place we'll go to now ever since we found it on a Yelp. It's a small little restaurant, it's clean, but the decor is a bit dated. Kazu, the restaurant owner and "sushi chef" runs the restaurant by himself. He takes the orders, makes the sushi and is also the cashier. Nonetheless, our orders are always made efficiently. I've been to many sushi establishments from Sushi Land to Umi Sake House and Sushi Kuine offers the simplest form of sushi there is. The rice mixture is perfect (not too sour & not too bland either) and the fish is always fresh. I love that Kazu doesn't add any frou frou "sushi" into his menu. The sushi he offers are straight forward. My favorites to order are the Salmon & Tuna Nigiri, the Gowe roll, Kent roll, Cali roll, and Spicy tuna roll. If you don't like wasabi make sure to let him know, sometimes he adds them to certain rolls. The prices are great as well, very cheap. We usually end up ordering 2 orders of Nigiri (1 order includes 2 pieces) and 4-5 rolls and we usually pay between $35-$40 plus tip. Don't forget to bring cash, but if you do forget, no biggie because there are several banks right next to the restaurant. My husband and I love going here and we hope Kazu keeps his business running for more years to come!

Even though I don't live around here anymore, I would still try to come back everytime i flew to Washington State. The owner has this sushi bar for over ten years, and he is super nice!! Knowing me and my group of friends will be leaving, he gave each of us a special salmon nigiri for free. so I don't get how there are reviews talking about bad service, he might be in a bad mood, missing his wife or his grandkids. This is where you go if you want authentic sushi. They don't have any fancy american rolls, but simple nigiri or maki. You know this is a place that is operated by Japanese. I always get their lunch plate, which is pretty fulling and you can try everything.

Yup, this place is as good as all the reviews say it is! This small hole in the wall sushi joint serves delicious, fresh fish alongside yummy miso and green tea refills galore. Service is excellent! When we walked in, we were told it was going to be a bit of a wait, as was each group that came in after us. I appreciate the heads up and don't mind waiting on this one man show! Cash only, as many others have noted. Very reasonable prices. Get the combo (nigiri and half a california role). A true hidden gem in Kent.

  • Deborah G.

Can't get enough. The owner is a kind man who was trained in Japan as a sushi chef. It may look like a hole in the wall, but don't underestimate this little sushi shop. Cash only, no alcohol but that is ok. His ingredients are fresh and seasonal, which means he doesn't always have everything in stock . We always ask him to surprise us after we eat a few nigiri. he will make a few wonderfully balanced pieces for you. You won't find any Americanized sushi here! Thank goodness!

This place is just amazing! Just remember bring cash. We had the sashimi lunch, the kent and Seattle rolls and the sweet squash roll. Everything was excellent! The first thing to strike me was you could taste the nori - very fresh. Often times I never taste it though I love the flavor. The sashimi was excellent - well cut and tasting good. We missed that most of the sashimi was accompanied by an herb or vegetable with which it should be eaten - for example a small piece of cucumber with the squid. We won't make that mistake again! What really stole the show though was how nice the owner/chef was to our children. He carried our 6 month old daughter around the restaurant while we ate and made my son a paper airplane and musubi with our leftover rice. The is place is awesome! I would easily drive from Seattle for it. It's a small place though so I think a group would not be a good idea.

I generally hesitate to mark a place down when there is confusion about opening times, but this one was a real frustrating head scratcher. Read the great reviews, stopped by earlier in the day to check out the place. Said, "open at 430pm" Hey, it's Valentines day on a Saturday, we will come down shortly after opening and enjoy it. Came by after their stated opening time, but no lights on, nothing. Checked by later and it was still closed. Weird. Sorry we had to take 2 trips by there when they couldn't bother to put up an "on vacation" sign--or SOMEthing.for potential diners. I guess their, ":cash only" stipulation may be an indicator that the owner flies by his own rules.

Wow. I am in shock right now. 4 of us (my brother, sister, husband, and myself) came to grab some sushi after a workout at Fenwick Park and we were so excited to grab some sushi. We got to the restaurant at 6:40pm-there was a couple that was finishing up their dinner and the owner/cook was chatting away with them. After seeing that it was cash only (which is odd and super shady for a restaurant like this) my brother and sister left us there to grab cash from an ATM. The owner/chef came up to my husband and I said that he's closing. We're like wait what? We thought you closed at 8pm and he said he's going home because he's sick. Ummmm...you were just serving another party and were chatting away with them. Are you kidding me?!? Who the heck does cash only at a sushi restaurant?!?

Amazing sushi. A hidden gem of a place in Kent, Wa. We ordered the lunch special and two rolls. All under $20! Served with green tea and excellent customer service. Would highly recommend!

This is not "Americanized" Sushi so you won't get the the usual heavy loaded stuff. We go here when we want really good sushi and sashimi. The Itami (sushi chef) makes everything himself ; so it does take some time, but he is a nice friendly man and the sushi is great. We love take out platters as well, just give the 3 hrs notice and you'll be happy. I was told it was so he could buy fresh extra fish.. Lol. Cash only, otherwise this is a 5 star place.

I have eaten many kinds of sushi from many types of sushi restaurants. I can't say that I'm overly impressed here. I like a good variety of options. Sometimes I like sashimi, sometimes I want a fried roll, sometimes I want some extra special. I am more than willing to pay for great sushi. I was disappointed that they had no fried or tempura rolls at all. I had already ordered my drink so I didn't want to just leave. I got the sashimi plate and my yellowtail was room temperature, which doesn't make me happy when eating raw fish. In other news, parking was a nightmare, and not having cash on me was a problem. I had to run across the road and get some from the ATM. I won't be going back here.

Great traditional sushi. Came back from a recent vacation to Japan and can vouch that his sushi is authentic. Has Wasabi on each piece, which is the way all sushi is in Japan. Cash only, so he prepared. Can we all please offer this man a square card reader for smartphones so he can accept credit and debit? Otherwise, the menu is small and limited, but everything is very high quality. Kazu is a real king of sushi! Check it out.

I was driving my dad to the airport and we decided to eat here since it was one of the few places that was open by 11am on a Saturday. We walked in at 11am and the owner immediately shooed us away saying he had too many party trays he needed to make and therefore wasn't open to 12pm. My dad was very upset with the attitude.

So, so, so, so good!!!! Kazu is very friendly, warm, welcoming, and a master itamae! The food was amazing, and at a very good price. My wife and I ate five specials and the total was only $25. If you love sushi you must check this place out! Like others have said, don't forget that it's a cash only restaurant.

If you're looking for a place that's serves sushi in its traditional manner, you're looking at the perfect spot. I've been coming to Sushi Kuine for a few months now and am totally hooked. This is a small business that focuses on their customers. Please note that this place is a Cash Only place. Which is completely fine. I personally hate the use of credit and debit cards anyway since it forces people to pay more since businesses will have a higher operating cost. Kazu and Toko are amazing folk and treat their customers with respect.

I am from California home to some of the greatest Japanese restaurants in the States yet I have to say that Sushi Kuine could stand on equal footing with any of them. I have truly found my Sushi Heaven here in Kent.

This place is awesome! My boyfriend and I had been meaning to go here for months, but finally got here this past weekend (kind of sad considering how close we live). We got there about 5pm and the place was empty. This surprised me, but I know they close between 2:30 and 4:30, so perhaps it wasn't quite dinnertime for some people yet. The menu is small, but has a lot of great choices. I had the avocado roll and the sweet squash roll - both were SUPER good and the ingredients were very fresh and tasty. My boyfriend had the tuna roll, spicy tuna roll, and masago roll. He loves tuna rolls and said that these were some of the best he's ever had. The chef prepared the food incredibly fast - I think we had our items within 5 minutes of ordering! I am guessing that the chef was Kazu, from the comments made by other reviewers. He was the only one there, but managed to take our order, prepare our sushi, keep our tea glasses full, and make sure we were happy. He was friendly and nice. Prices are AWESOME! I can't believe how cheap it was. The total for the two of us was just under $20. Speaking of - this place is CASH ONLY, so keep that in mind. This is definitely going to become 'our' sushi place - we already have plans to go back this coming weekend!

Do you know how sometimes you feel like you are in the twilight zone. Like you are really being punked or something. I left out of the restaurant saying really? My husband and I were celebrating his promotion and I planned a last minute sushi and sake outing. Since this place didn't have sake, we went around the corner for sake and drinks and wanted to come here for dinner. As with the other reviews, it's a cash only spot and it is very small. Needless to say, it was empty and we had the place to ourselves. Upon entry, the chef/owner was eating but stopped when we came in. No hello, greeting, anything. I had to use the restroom and asked where it was, he pointed to the back and resumed his whatever he was doing. I looked at my husband the owner saw my face and pointed to the key and then to the back. Ok, maybe he doesn't speak English. Came back into the restaurant and things had not gotten better. My husband asked for a menu, and the chef/owner pointed and said right there and resumed whatever he was doing. Hmmm ok. We look at the menu and everything is very reasonable. Nigiri 2.99 for two pieces. Large rolls (rainbow, etc.) 7.95. My husband is a people person and likes to engage in small talk, especially with a sushi chef. This guy was not having it and totally ignored my husband's advances. Fine, let's order and bounce. We ordered the rainbow roll and the Gowe St. Roll (salmon, masago, and something else). Rolls are quickly prepared and placed in front of us. We each have soy sauce but my husand likes unagi sauce (eel sauce). The chef looks really funny and says no. Only have eel, no eel sauce. He questions where we have eaten sushi and explains that we are Americanized. Now my husband's feelings are hurt because well he feels he is a semi-expert of sushi. We eat in silence until I notice how spicy the rolls are. I like to put wasabi in my soy sauce but I don't remember doing that. Hmmm ok. My husband's eyes water and I know it's not just me. Apparently, real sushi has wasabi between the rice and the fish. After a much (an obviously) needed lesson on sushi, nigiri and Americanized items, the chef/owner began to open up and was a very nice guy. Say what? When I pay and leave him a tip. He says that my tip is way too much and only leave him a couple of dollars. SAY WHAT? Just like that, I am trying to wake up from this crazy dream. Will I be back, I am so confused on me saying YES!! I AM GOING BACK TO BE IGNORED, TALKED ABOUT, RIDICULED, GREAT SUSHI AND A LOW TIP!

I've travelled the world in search of great sushi and this tiny hole in the wall sushi bar is one of my favorites. The sushi is always fresh, honest and authentic. There are no fancy rolls here but the sushi here always hits the mark. I'm usually the only one in there for lunch and really enjoy the quaint & quiet 1960s ambiance and the attention of your own personal sushi chef! Ask for the special salmon sushi-- served with sea salt and a slice of lemon. Very reasonably priced sushi in a charming old school ambience. A gem in Kent.

When I'm in the mood for California Rolls, this is my go to spot. Always good, always fresh. Best I've had by far. I always get Special A; 8 piece California Roll and 6 piece Cucumber Roll for $6.05. Been this same price for years.

This place is very authentic and cozy. Not your chain or mall type restaurant, but more like a friendly small, clean, and well kept sushi place. The prices are great and the sushi tasted delicious. I noticed all the customers that walked in were regulars. Ill definitely return! Do make sure to have cash handy.

Sushi Kuine has quickly become a favorite lunch spot among my coworkers. Oftentimes we find that we don't want to leave after lunch is done, finding hot tea and conversation with Kazu far more interesting than work. The sushi is fresh, and masterfully prepared... Highly recommended!! Pay Kazu a visit.

This place is unreal. Just like Japan. Authentic sushi is about simplicity. No heavy sauces, no ridiculously confusing rolls. Cash only. Good selection of absolutely fresh, superb sushi. He doesn't always have every item on the menu because he won't feed you stuff thats no longer fresh. You should be concerned about a sushi place that always has everything on the menu. Just like Japan, you won't find teriyaki at a sushi place, or ramen at a tempura place. At a JAPANESE sushi restaurant, you will find just sushi. Embrace the simplicity. It's the appeal of truly superb sushi. And it's in Kent! Who knew?

Always my first choice for Sushi in the area. Amazing, fresh, authentic. Definitely not the big chain, sushi on a treadmill kind of place. However, that's not to say that they don't get the sushi out super fast. They make everything to order in less than 10 minutes. Sushi Kuine has charm and the owners are very friendly.
