Again. Great service. Top notch food. Always worth the wait. Love it. I have had a lot of sushi and this is the best Tri cities has to offer. Mushroom boom. Monkey brain. Samurai roll Crunch roll

Decent little sushi place in an unexpected location. Always tough to find a good quality sushi place further inland, suppose being on the river helps, but Sushi Ya delivers a quality product with great service. Always enjoyable here, and the decor definitely sticks out. I always explain to people this place is the sushi place with all the chefs faces on movie posters. Helps distinguish it as something a bit more unique. Nice little gem in the Tri-Cities area, worth a visit!

My friends and I came here on a Wednesday evening and it was quite busy. We had to wait 45 minutes to be seated and another 60 minutes or so before we actually got our food... Even after business slowed down a little. It's a good thing I wasn't especially hungry. After we got our food, we were completely ignored until it was time to pay and leave; annoying since one of my friends had wanted to order a second plate. The sushi itself was tasty. People keep calling it the best in the Tri-Cities, but I don't know about that... I'm not a sushi expert. I definitely didn't enjoy it *more* than the other places I've tried here, but I didn't like it less either. This would be three stars if it weren't for the wait. If there's not a line out the door and you're willing to risk slow service, this is a perfectly fine place to go.

I haven't tried all the sushi restaurants in Tri-Cities but I've been to enough sushi restaurants around the US to know quality fish. And this place kicks ass! I was seriously blown away by the freshness and flavor of the saba (mackerel) on top of their seasoned rice. The salmon was tender, buttery and sweet like good salmon should be. The creamy scallops were just as delectable with little bits of roe in it. Their rolls were pretty big and tasty. No, it's not super spicy even though it may say spicy but the reality is if you make the food too spicy and a customer complains, it gets sent back to the kitchen and the restaurant wastes the food. So I understand it's quite difficult to please everyone. Personally, we loved the Samurai roll and will pass on the Kamakazi roll next time. Sushi or sashimi is a must. As for service, I thought our waitress was fine. Nothing great but she was attentive enough where I didn't even have to wave anyone down. Oh, and do expect a little bit of a wait on the weekends.

Decent sushi ( I am used to phenomenal sushi on the west side of the mountains so my standards were pretty high) and nice enough people and service. I wouldn't go terribly out of my way to come back and will keep searching for great sushi but it wasn't too bad.

Least impressive sushi restaurant in all of Tri Cities. I almost wanted to vomit the tuna. Smelled ok but the taste was not there. Every roll we purchased was disappointing. This place is hit and miss and you can't afford to spend almost $50 for two people and leave unsatisfied and feeling gross. Ill never go back. I felt raped after my last visit, wanted my money back. Not fresh and I am abhorred to see that they were also serving monkey brains. Shame on them! The restaurant is small, and Im glad for that. Do yourself a favor and go to Osaka or Sakura. Hate this place.

For my money, this is the best sushi in town, with a wide selection of offerings and creative presentations. The sushi never tastes overly "fishy" and always seems fresh. The chefs are authentic and can be entertaining if you engage them in conversation. I was curious about the soft shell tempura crab, so I tried it. It was pretty good! I had just never eaten a full shelled crab in tempura style, so i appreciated something little off the wall I had never tried before. Bring a few friends, get a boat and a Sapporo! The salad that comes with the meal is a tad gross, i just push it to the side.

I'm always leery of sushi made by non Asian workers. Please don't get me wrong a true Itamae interns for 10 years before he can make sushi. Tonight my rolls were made by a nice enough fellow and they were acceptable but made with way too much rice. The second issue I had was my two rolls were served separately. This allows the restaurant to dictate how you decide to eat. A total ball drop if you ask me. Make both rolls deliver them let the guest decide how much of each they should eat. The waitress were decent but again nobody checked to see if I was happy. They left my salad bowl and menu on the table through meal and after the sushi maker delivered my second roll nobody bussed the first empty plate. The second waitress filled my water once. My waitress brought my bill without asking if I wanted dessert or anything else. The experience all seemed sort of phoned in. Based on some of the Yelp reviews I read I was hoping to like this place and in reality it was decent but I've had much better. My search remains for a great sushi joint in the tri cities area.

This joint is legit! There are actually Asian people working here. They have authentic sushi rolls, like salmon roe! I got the tempura udon! Good stuff!!

So here we are and we haven't received our food yet but at this point I don't care how fantastic their sushi is still only 2 stars. My husband and I just moved here from Nevada where at every sushi place you can do all you can it for no more then 19.95. So everyone eats at least 3-4 rolls for that price. Well while I was ordering my 2nd roll she says "this is for 2 people right?" I said " no for me" she said "oh wow that's a lot". I explain" where from Nevada where it's all you can eat everywhere so it's normal to have 2-4 rolls in a sitting." She very loudly says... " oh wow your a big girl and have a big stomach for that" and laughs. I am not overweight, my stomach is flat and I'm in pretty good shape. I immediately felt embarrassed. Apparently for them it's good business to call their customers fat. And here I thought you would want people to order more. Silly me. So for that 1 star for being seated quickly and for getting drinks and taking order quickly. But that's about it.

Delicious, beautiful and not too pricey!! Fun atmosphere and attentive staff. A new family favorite for sure!

I recommend the tuna and avocado roll with some tobiko on top. The tobiko is $2.00 extra, but with a little bit of wasabe and soy sauce it really ties the dish together perfectly.

We were in town for the 4th of July weekend and craved sushi. We were a little skeptical about having sushi in a desert area but were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. Rolls were huge and filling and tasty. Our waitress, a mature Asian lady (didn't catch her name) was super sweet and funny. They were really busy so was service and food times were understandably a little slow.

This is my very favorite sushi place! It's always very fresh and has great service. Definitely the best sushi in the Tri Cities!

I'm a very big foodie person and a critic.I Eat out quite a bit.Sushi at this place were EXTREMELY fresh and presented beautifully.I would not think that small unnoticed restaurant like this can possibly serve this kind of quality food.Would definitely go back for more.

    (4)
  • Christine B.

For sushi i'd have to say this is the best you're going to get here in the Tri-cities. The service is hit or miss. Do not go here if you're in a hurry and be prepared to wait 20 or so minutes for your drink and have your food come out at random times.

    (3)
  • Chris B.

Been here a couple times and it seems very hit or miss. Sometimes the sushi smells fresh and it's good, other times I walk in and can tell right away that it's a "don't eat the sushi" kind of day. Staff is always friendly though and the place is nice. I've had better but would go back.

  • Isa C.

My favorite sushi place! I can always trust that all the rolls are very fresh and amazing... The service is not always the best from certain servers and it sucks having dinner when u know the server hates her job, thankfully they're not the cooks the samurai is my favorite

  • Sarah F.

Wow! I reluctantly tried this place but gave in due to my husband insisting I give it a shot. He had eaten here for lunch and was surprised how good it was. I got the shrimp and mixed vegetable tempura. It came out so beautifully presented! It was really fresh and the oil was crisp not greasy at all. Then we got the chicken teriyaki. Very good!! I'm impressed and can't wait to come back. Only bummer I saw was that the screens that separate tables were super dirty. I'm a snob for cleanliness especially in a sushi place. If I were them I would spend a weekend to disinfect and clean the dining room. It matters!

  • Brittany N.

Four stars for the food, but like people have said, the service is pretty terrible. We ordered over the phone for take-out, and when we got there to pick up our food, we found out whoever had taken our order never sent it to the kitchen. It was already a 40 minute lead time for take-out, and then we had to sit there for another 20 while they made our order. That aside, we'll probably go again, just maybe not on a weekend night during peak hours. Our food (though ridiculously delayed) was very good. I especially liked the Kamikaze Roll, which has spicy tuna - my favorite.

Friendly staff. Great food! Always be sure to check the specials board for something new!!!

  • Kirby R.

I have been here before and LOVED it but the past couple of times I have had the worst service imaginable, we ordered two dishes of sushi and teriyaki chicken to go but an hour later we still didn't have our food let alone our bill. Other people had been seated after us, eaten and left with ten times more food than we had gotten! And our chicken was cold and our sushi disgustingly warm when we stepped outside to open our boxes. It's safe to say I've given this place too many chances and will not be eating here again. :(

Coming from a similarly sized small city, I know what a quest it can be for good ethnic food. Even when places like this don't completely measure up to the calibre found in bigger cities, I have a soft spot for them - I really do want them to succeed. With this in mind, my review is purely intended to help this place improve, rather than blast it to bits. The start of the evening was the worst. We waited 10 minutes at the door before even getting acknowledged. This is unacceptable in my books. We should have been able to put our name down and receive an approximate wait time within 30 seconds of stepping in. This really set off a poor mood, and seemed to be the theme of the evening. The staff were pleasant enough, popping by several times to check 'if everything was going ok'. However, they were horrendously inefficient, to the point where I was wondering whether all three of them were in training. I wish they would do less checking if things were okay, and actually do some more work. I observed wait staff making multiple trips back and forth because they just weren't able to multitask - bringing one table the bill, then going back to get the water for the table right next door, then going back again to get menus. One of the waitresses spent most of her time walking around asking everyone how their food was, and yet ignored the multiple tables (including ours) with empty dishes that she could have easily cleared. Another one of the waitresses didn't seem to know where any of the tables were, and tried to take orders from the people seated next to us (even though they were clearly already half way through their meal!) before realizing it was us that needed to order. They had NO system of keeping track of who was waiting at the front (a simple pad of paper and pen to write names down would have done the trick), and they seemed perpetually confused whether there were 3 groups of 2, or 2 groups of 3, etc...I amusingly watched the waitresses drop everything multiple times to cluster around the service desk and lament in bewilderment at the 'chaos' of having 3 groups of people waiting to be seated. It was ridiculous. I have to say that as the food started coming, the overall experience did improve. Being seated at the sushi bar, the sushi chef directly handed us our food (thank god), bypassing the disastrous serving situation. The food itself was decent in quality, actually. We had the tempura (decently battered, vegetables slightly undercooked), the albacore tataki (delicious), the salmon skin roll (pretty good) and the daniel roll (mushy tuna). This place was still packed, despite this horrific service, so I suspect people either don't know better, are too polite to say anything, or just take what they can get, given the limited selection. Bottom line is, a smaller town might not be able to sustain a restaurant serving 5 star sushi, but there is absolutely no excuse for shitty service. Train your people properly.

In my search for the best sushi.... Sushi Ya. Strip Mall Sushi...... I underestimated this place. clean and modern restaurant. Friendly waitstaff, trained chefs. I had the Ahi Roll and Miso soup. nice and pretty fresh. the fish was a bit limp but had good flavor. Definitely in my top group.

Was the first place we tried when we moved here and now we are coming back. So far it's been the best, but we still haven't gone to Sushi Mori. Still good, fresh fish and its quaint. First time the waitress had a hard time understanding us, but this time it's been better...

Ambience: As soon as I walked in, I thought it was an overall nice place to eat dinner. I thought it was clean, had a comfortable noise level, and was immediately acknowledged by the staff (which I loved most). But that's just the atmosphere of the place, how I really judge a place is by its food and service. Food: To me, the food was just alright. It's not something I would crave or go out of my way for, despite the bomb reviews this place has been getting. I had a side of tempura, some of which still had powder in it. I appreciate food being brought out in a timely manner, but I'd rather wait the few minutes to get food that's thoroughly cooked. Service: Besides being acknowledged upon entering, I thought the service was worse than the food. My brothers and I have this thing where we base the tip on how many times the waiter/waitresses refill our cups with water without having to chase them down. Let's just say I had to ask for water and still didn't get my glass filled before walking out the door. Overall, I give this place a 2 out of 5 stars. The food was alright, which would have given it a 3, but the service just begged me to give it a 2.

Really great sushi especially for the Tri Cities. This is a great place to go if you have the time. The fish is consistently fresh and sushi is better than a lot of sushi I have had in Seattle. I've eaten here probably an average of 50 times over the last 6-7 years and only once or twice I've had fish that was off. I do request they cut the sushi in smaller bites (10 instead of 8) because some of the rolls are f-ing huge. I would love to give Sushi Ya five stars but there are two reasons that make it a solid 4 star place: 1. Service is consistently slow. I'm not sure what all the servers are responsible for, but this restaurant is very small and still it can be quite a while before the servers come back to fill water or bring your check, even when it's slow. It's a bit puzzling. No matter, I always just come prepared for a long dinner and don't stress about it, so I recommend you do the same. The servers are always very nice and courteous so it's certainly not a dealbreaker. You just can't come here during peak hours or when you're in a hurry and expect to get out quick. I have no complaints with this because id rather wait for carefully crafted roll than a sloppy quickie. 2. The menu. Never. Changes. Occasionally there are special rolls but those also change very rarely. I get it, the Tri cities does not like change. Most people around here want to go back to a restaurant and always order the same things. Not this girl. I've been coming here an average of once a month since 2007 and even through a change in management the menu changed only imperceptibly. New rolls alone would easily bump this up to five stars in my opinion. There are so many slight variations they could do with the ingredients they already use! Maybe I'll submit some suggestions. In summary, GO HERE!! My usual rotations include crunch dragon, sweetheart, samurai, Daniel, and the sashimi plates.

My husband and I have heard great things about this place and decided to try it together tonight. I knew I wanted a rainbow roll and he wanted their Crunchy Dragon roll. We wanted to pick a third roll to share, but couldn't decide, so we asked our waitress for help. She recommended the Samurai roll. It did not disappoint! I liked it more than my usual go-to roll, which was still delicious. Overall, we had a great experience and ate some awesome sushi. We'll definitely be back!

I was visiting the area and came here just before closing on a Wednesday night. I ordered 12 Nigiri rolls to start. When the plate arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent presentation. On top of that, they were nice enough to give me a bonus roll! For my second order, I ordered more nigiri rolls but told the chef to surprise me with the types of fish. In addition to the amount I ordered, this time I was given two more bonus pieces! An awesome gesture that made an already great meal even better. The sushi is excellent, tastes very fresh, and has tons of flavor. I have a big appetite, and I have to commend any Sushi restaurant that can leave me completely full for under $30. It doesn't happen often. I eat a lot of Sushi while traveling, and Sushi Ya is one of my all time favorites. Kennewick definitely has a gem on their hands.

    (5)
  • Elizabeth V.

Staff is very personable. The menu has a nice variety of sushi and other selections. We eat at SushiYa once a week and have rarely had a poor experience. It's one of our favorite places to take out of town guests. The "monkey brains" appetizer is delicious and fun.

Very good local sushi restaurant with an interesting menu, good service and decent prices. I enjoy the various sushi rolls while my oldest daughter likes the sushi pizza! Everything seems clean, fresh and well prepared.

I've eaten at a lot of different sushi bars all over portland/vancouver and also tri-cities. I've done sushi for about 5 years myself working at various restaurants and this is honestly the best one I've eaten at as well as worked at. Everything they do is top notch and done with "love". Only place to eat sushi

    (5)
  • Brian A.

Definitely the best sushi in the Tri-Cities. I have tasted almost everything on their menu but usually come back to their nigiri sushi which is always fresh and delicious. I also highly recommend their appetizers (octopus salad!) and their desserts (not just their sesame balls). Unfortunately, the word is out and the restaurant is often packed. The last time I went for lunch it was completely full and I ended up going to Sushi Mori.

    (5)
  • Jim B.

Lived up to the reviews posted. Interesting warm sushi rolls that may be straying over the line to becoming a casserole. A more classical roll used as the foundation with a complimentary topping. Service and cleanliness great only reason not five star the limited beverage selection.

  • Zhe F.

We've been here many times for our sushi fix, can definitely say it's the best sushi place in the Tri-cities. It's also quite consistent, every time we try their various roles they're all very tasty, especially the special roles. It's not San Francisco sushi, but this is the Tri-cities we're talking about. Definitely recommended for locals!

Minus a couple stars since they messed up on our orders/service. We came here on Feb 13th and had to wait about 10 mins to be seated. Didn't mind the wait so much since you get to see their Japanese collections (tea cups, dolls, fans etc) that you can buy. We ordered: Fried Calamari, Soft Shell Crab, Vegas roll, Yummy roll, Godzilla roll, Super Tempura Roll and the Spider roll. We also ordered the G Sake. Our bill was $100.00 (with tip). Food: I LOVED the fried calamari! It was AMAZING. I also loved that they give you a side of sweet chili paste (like in Thai restaurants) The soft shell crab was also great. The sauce was very nice with it. I don't remember which sushi was which since we didn't have the menu and they didn't tell us, but all but one was good. One (vegas roll maybe) wasn't that good because it had an odd taste almost like bbq. The G sake was alright for me. I don't really think it fits the description it had. It said it has a nice taste of plum, peach and melon. But..I honestly didn't taste any of that and it wasn't too sweet. It was pretty bland honestly. Not really worth the $17 Service: Refilling our drinks wise was alright. The reason they lost 2 stars was because they actually forgot our fried calamari and soft shell crab. They gave us our sushis and didn't even realize we had appetizers. We had waiting for a good 10-15 minutes too. So that annoyed me that we didn't get it and we had to wait another 10 min for our appetizer. It was also annoying that due to the circular plate (that they use for the sushi) size, we barely had room for our two appetizer on the table. They had to awkwardly push every to the side and put them on the edge. And they almost fell too! Overall, 3 stars mostly because of how amazing the soft shell and the calamari was. Also a couple of the sushis were HUGE. They were a lot bigger than the average size sushi. There is a minus and a plus part for that. The plus is you get more. The minus is you have to tear it apart and eat it bite by bite and as far as I know, that is a very very disrespectful way to eat sushi. Another minus is you don't get to enjoy the favor as a whole but only as pieces. Imagine instead of tasting rice, seaweed, fish, a bit of avocado, and crab salads. You only taste crab salad and avocado. Its just a bit disappointing and it feels disrespectful.

This is as good as it gets in Tri Cities when it comes to sushi. Service is good, food is good and usually does not take long at all. Been here several times and walked out full and happy.

Delicious!!! Good service, great food, good prices! Highly recommend eating here. Had the sashimi plate and would order it again. Next time, I'll try a fancy roll of sushi.

Hands down my favorite sushi in the Tri cities. The tiger roll, super tempura roll, Alaska roll, crunch roll, and sweetheart roll are all awesome. My kids love the Japanese sodas they sell and I love the strawberry mochi. When sushi is on my mind I always choose sushi ya!

    (5)
  • David L.

The sushi is good. I'm just not thrilled about the service. I am not saying they are rude. Just slow. If you have time, you will find this place makes some good different rolls.

  • Nick P.

Probably some of the best sushi in the Tri Cities. Reasonable prices for good portions. Great presentation and the service was pretty good as well. We went with three kids and they loved it. The place isn't very big and doesn't seat a ton of people so there is usually a wait especially if you go with more than 4 people. This is definitely our go to sushi place!

My family hang. The only place to go for sushi in my opinion. The staff is wonderful, the rolls are very well crafted and they always have something new to try. love them!

Quite possibly the Best Sushi i had since moving to the West Coast, i wish i would have tried the Saki but i think i probably wouldnt have done a great job at work that night! For starters, the service was outstanding and very attentive, The location is not too appealing to the eyes, i think if they had a better location, more people would actually go there instead of Mizu located at Columbia Center Mall. Food was Fantastic, i ordered for starters the Gyoza potsickers, then followed by a Samurai Roll, and finished the meal with the Lychee and Ginger pairing of ice cream which was the highlight of the meal...thank me later :) Price is very reasonable, a true gem in the Tri Cities, cant believe it took me so long to give them a shot

  • Jenny B.

Great meal. It was a little crowded (small space + Friday evening) so we had to wait a few minutes. We ended up getting tempura and a few different rolls. I was not terribly impressed by the service (table had to be wiped down, rolls took about twenty minutes, drinks weren't refilled) but the food made up for it. Rolls are new and interesting combinations and for the price a great value! Definitely will go back. And there are quite a few vegetarian options.

Love love love sushi ya! Always good food and fast service. You never leave that place without all of them smiling and saying thank you.

  • David H.

Some of the staff was friendly and others not so much. Almost every sushi roll had some kind of sauce all over it (that's totally an American thing). Not that it's bad, but we like the more traditional Japanese sushi which is simple and doesn't have tons of sauce. It took forever every time we ordered sushi rolls (roughly 20 minutes each time). Most places I've ever been to take far less time. Not sure what the hold up was???

    (2)
  • Lisa A.

Traveled from Clarkston...excited for sushi...great food and service. We would go back if in area again. FYI wish tobiko was distributed over roll instead of in a spot in middle of the roll.

  • Melanie L.

The sushi is probably the best and freshest here. It's not amazing, but we will take what we can get. The service is so lacking. It seems like they are chronically understaffed. There are usually one to two waitresses on a Friday or Saturday night. Usually when we walk in, we wait at the front entrance for a few minutes before anyone even realizes we're there. Once we sit, it's usually another 10 minutes or so before getting waters or ordering. We got sake last night and the actual sake bottle materialized quickly. The cups, however, took another 15 minutes and we had to remind the waitress again for them. My husband and I were contemplating either guzzling directly from the bottle or using the sake bottle cap as our cup. Yikes. The food, after ordering, took about a half an hour to come. And we felt terrible for two families with small kids next to us who hadn't even ordered and were obviously ready and waiting (menus closed, staring around).

This is our favorite sushi restaurant in the area. We have enjoyed everything we ordered every time we visit. We have come on a date here and we sat in a quiet corner, family friendly too. great food, and we have always had great service.

  • Dorene S.

The first time I visited, I thought the food was incredible. The fish was fresh in my Hwe Dub Bap (fish, sauce, rice, vegetables...all mixed in one bowl), service was great and all in all a good experience. During my second visit, I had the Hwe Dub Bap again, and the fish wasn't as fresh as I had remembered. Still, not bad and I would visit again the next time I'm in Kennewick. Coworkers had the Caterpillar and Dynamite roll - the presentation was pretty nice. KPI (Key Performance Indicator) ratings (1-5, 5 - best): Quality: 3 Delivery/Service: 4 Cost: 4

I am not a sushi connoisseur, but I do enjoy it. I went in based on good Yelp reviews and this place did not disappoint. I was by myself on a work break, and was seated immediately. I ordered the Kamikaze Roll. The chef handed it to me personally. It was very good. They also gave me extra wasabi as I use a lot. I can't think of any aspect of my experience that could have been better. When you think of Tri-Cities, you don't think sushi, but this place is as good as anything I've had in Seattle, NYC or otherwise.

    (5)
  • Elizabeth W.

This place has a nice selection of sushi, but I don't think they are the best tasting in town. Their miso soup was not very good. The staff was not friendly either. I would probably go back, but I feel that Sushi Mori has much better tasting sushi.

    (4)
  • Mama F.

Maybe I'm spoiled. This place was okay. The service was good. The rolls were okay. I'm used to eating fresh caught or never frozen. I've lived on Maui so it's tough to beat that. A 3 for trying. I may return if I'm in the area and craving sushi.

As for sushi in the Tri Cities, this is probably the best. The chefs are awesome! Last night I pulled in for take out, and was visibly impressed with the results, as well as 210% satisfied after eating four different rolls in one sitting! Yeah, I kind of eat a lot of food. So here's how last night worked, I walked in and was greeted right away, there was no wait for me to place my order! I talked with the Chef at the first station, (wish I got his name) and asked chef what he would recommend. I told him I wanted four different rolls, and to mix it up, surprise me with what he likes the best. Now I wish I had not said that because as reviews go, I'd rather let ya'll know what I had! Let me tell you if you ever like to be surprised, and delighted at the same time, put your life in the hands of a well qualified chef. I am truly glad that I did. One of the rolls was spicy and fried. I think it was panco bread crumbs, which kept warm until after I got home. The other three were prepared cold. One spicy, had jalapeños that kicked up the flavor about ten degrees, the other two mild, and complemented the other two spicy rolls. Out of the two mild rolls, one was made with crab, the other I believe salmon. All I can say is it was GREAT! Please go check this place out. I would say good bang for your buck, however, that's all relative. Some people like to invest in the stock market, where I would much rather invest in food and wine! I find live much more fun this way! Cheers!

I'm adding another star since I just love this place more and more. Always had great nigiris, sashimi ... I come here once a week and never had a single pb with the food ! We are lucky to have this place in the TC ! The other options play in a much lower league ...

Best sushi in town. Attentive staff, great food, not at a bad price either. I get a great meal for just ~$11 usually. Even when they were packed, the waitress made sure we were taken care of. Nice atmosphere too!

I will never try any other sushi place in the tri cities ever again and will always be faithful to the sushi ya. The sushi chefs are very friendly and helpful and I have never had a bad meal.

My GF and I ate here Friday 1/10/14 it had been a couple months since we ate here. Wow it was awesome ! We had the Samurai and the Ninja I am so impressed with the quality! Best sushi in tri cities!

This is my new favorite go-to sushi joint for the Tri-Cities. The dining area is well laid out and has a good ambiance. There is an actual sushi bar with about 5-7 stools to sit at. The staff were attentive and very friendly. Then there's the sushi. A friend and I tried three different rolls, and they were very yummy with fresh-tasting ingredients. Their presentation was well done, and they were brought to our table very fast. They also have Asian beers and a small, but full bar. Oh, FYI, they don't take Discover cards. :)

I feel like I entered a different restaurant than all the other Yelpers. With all the 5- star reviews this restaurant had, I was sure it would be at least "pretty ok". However, from the moment we walked in for dinner, I felt like we were severely inconveniencing the server. We were seated right away, but with no greeting, just a wave of the hand and no smile, no hello. She plopped the menus down, and if we weren't so tired from traveling all day, I probably would have walked out at that point. We ordered appetizers, a hot meal for the kids, and rolls for my husband and I. She didn't ask us if we wanted anything to drink, and walked away before we could think to ask for any. She didn't come to check on us at all until the food was ready. It's possible she was having an off day, but seriously? The sushi was just okay, I can't imagine what all these other Yelpers are raving about, it was okay, not "amazing", but adequate. Timing wise, she served the appetizers at the same time as the sushi rolls. The hot meal, which my poor kids were waiting for, came 10 minutes after everything else (and she didn't say "oh they're still working on your teriyaki", so I'm sitting there wondering if maybe she didn't get the order right). Every interaction with this woman was uncomfortable. So, if you're from out of town, and wondering if you should stop here for dinner, my suggestion is, if you have any standards for sushi and service, probably don't do it. I almost would have rather eaten at one of the many chain restaurants on the same street (and I have a strict no-chain restaurant policy, when its my choice). There are a lot of things I will endure without comment, but apathetic and rude service is just unacceptable at a full service restaurant of any kind. Also, if you have kids, its a 40-seat restaurant with no music playing, and no kids menu. I would not recommend it for families at all.

This sushi is the best in tri-cities. The service sucks sometimes, but we always come back because the food is great!

This sushi was amazing. I had a veggie roll and I was so sad when it was over. Dinner for two was around $25, each of us having a roll and sharing edamame for an appetizer. It arrived very quickly and the service was for the most part really good. It is a very small place...only about 12 or so tables in a small strip mall, but it is worth the visit. A couple caveats: It took a while to get our order taken. One server seated us and then did not take our order, and about 10 minutes later another server asked if we had been helped yet. It was kind of weird but it didn't really matter. Also, the sushi comes served on ENORMOUS boat/plate things. I have never had sushi presented like this...and it was extremely strange. I mean the boat/plates were pretty sweet, but they were huge and sort of awkward. Would definitely be back if I were ever in the Tri-Cities again!

This is our 4th time at Sushi Ya. We've never been disappointed. My husband had the Ninja - very spicy with tuna, avocado and jalapeños. I had the Dynamite with crab, shrimp and scallops - a wonderful blend of hot and cold. Both were delicious!

The vegetable roll was top notch! I wasn't as impressed with the fish, though. Also, 8 bucks for a California roll?! (interobang, pa-CHOW) Pricier than I have seen sushi before, but it's decent enough.

This establishment serves great, fresh sushi. It is by far the best place in the area to get a good boat of rolls. I eat there often and the service is always friendly and the food always fresh. The waitstaff are very personable and friendly. They are prompt with the water and drinks, as well as refills which is always a plus in any eatery. This place's popularity has grown beyond what it's current location can provide. I would like to see this place expand and invest in their interior design and ergonomics. It's not quite comfortable for large parties but would be a great place to have large parties or dinner groups. I recommend this place to any sushi lover!

I keep running into these 5 star Japanese restaurants. Luck I guess. This place I found on yelp and then was recommended by a client. So I guess it was fate ! What a great choice, chef Min and chef Kim take excellent care of you. The fish is ultra fresh and delicious. The service is five star as well. A very pleasant place to have some great comfort food and relax.

This really is the best sushi in town! First of all, they kindly greet you as soon as you walk in. The atmosphere is always clean and relaxed. The sushi... it speaks for itself. Everything I've tried, I've enjoyed. If you LOVE sushi, this is the place to get it. My favorite!

  • Heather W.

Mind blowingly expensive. $6 for 6 pieces of vegetable tempura. One spear of deep fried asparagus for $1. One onion ring for $1. That level of markup is unreal, I can't imagine how they can sustain themselves after screwing customers over like that. If they used all organic ingredients and shopped at grocery stores (no restaurant supply), I calculated approximate MINIMUM markup at 1200%. And this isn't some high-end waterfront restaurant...this is a strip mall joint. $7 for approximately 1.5 cups of vegetable yakisoba. Sushi prices? Tamago (two pieces) for $3 Inarisushi (two pieces) for $3 Avocado roll (4-6 pieces) for $6. Tempura roll (6 pieces) $12. TWELVE DOLLARS for six pieces of non-fish sushi!! Whaat?! The food is great, but nowhere near worth the price. Tragic, because we would be extremely regular customers otherwise. The food is good, and the staff is kind and friendly and outgoing but I'm not going back unless I have someone else's disposable income to spend.

My husband and I went to Sushi Ya again last night and will continue to give them a good rating. The place is neat and clean. The service is good, everyone including the sushi chefs say goodbye when you leave. We split a 10 piece sushi plate (red snapper, salmon, shrimp, tuna, and...[can't remember]) with crunch roll and a spider roll. Food was served quickly, fresh and delicious. They have a decent Asian beer selection and 3 different saki options. Sure...there are places in the big cities that are better than this, but it's still decent and it's the best sushi place we have.

Pricey but good overall. We got the medium size sushi platter and it was good. the fish size was generous which was really nice . The California roll was okay. We also got the octopus salad which was small but nice and crunchy and tasted good. My husband got the teriyaki chicken special which was quite good. i kinda wish I had ordered it too. we will definitely be back for their large portions of sushi.

Who knows if the sushi is good... Sign said "Please wait to be seated" and we stood there for 20mins and were ignored by everyone who worked there!! It was so ridiculous we left!! At least acknowledge the people waiting to eat your damn food they might be willing to wait!! Huge thumbs down!!!!! Horrible service!! Won't even attempt to go there no matter how high their rating is! They lost my business at the door!!

I like sushi a lot! Thankfully that there was a place in the Tri-cities that was above decent. The service was very accommodating. I went alone so I sat at the bar. Once I was ready I sat my menu down and the chef behind the bar was very observant to see that I was ready to order. I had the small shashimi combo and gave me the option to have all tuna! Score!! I asked for a Tobiko and instead of charging me for a plate of Nigiri Tobiko.... He gave me a small side in which to dip my California roll in! Ha Double Score!! I love their style of Sunomono, good miso, and above average cold sake for cheap! I made out of there for around $40 with a 15%+ tip!!! If you like sushi or if you have never tried sushi.... this place is worth the stop! Not too expensive and not too shabby if I may say!! Good selection of rolls as well but I'm picky as to what is in my rolls. None really caught my attention except the New Mexico Roll..... I saw a picture of it on Yelp. Jalapeno on top!! To be anticipated in the High-desert!

Yummy~!!!!! Just moved here from the east coast. After trying alot of different Asian restaurants.. I thought.... well, its not an area with lots of asians so.... decided to not have too much expectations when going to an asian restaurant... and i had some sushi cravings so i Thought I would give Sushi Ya a try. It seemed like a decent place based on other yelpers... Went inside sat at the Sushi bar since I came alone. Ordered the delux sushi and some wine...... Yummy~ it was very fresh well prepared sushi. Only. Thing is... The Delux had ALOT of sushi, so next time I go, I will probably just order sushi by the pieces instead because I ate only half of it. : ( Regardless at the end of the day, my bill was very frugal ..... never paid so little at a sushi joint.... and i had a lot of food and wine... Great sushi.... Great price.... Wonderful service and atmosphere...... Yes~ I was one happy sushi eating customer. So happy I found this place. Yay~

Our food was absolutely amazing. We had the jalapeño poppers, chicken teriyaki, and a couple rolls. The prices were good, especially considering the quality of food. My only complaint was my server - she wasn't very focused on us and would walk off without giving me a chance to order more food, not to mention ask for wasabi and ginger.

I just found my new favorite sushi place in town. Finally stopped in after hearing about the place for the last year and I'm really sorry I waited this long. It is far and above the best sushi place in town. The atmosphere is very nice and the food was absolutely incredible. I tried the jalapeno popper which turned out to be one of the best things I've ever eaten. Fried and filled with fish and cream cheese, and covered in some sauce, I'm dying to go back and get it again. The prices are just a bit more than the other places, but that extra price is well worth it in the taste. Can't recommend this place enough, and you have to try the jalapeno popper.

Another winner in the tri-cities for business travel. The service was good. The staff friendly, and attentive. Even though I went early (430 pm) and I was the only one in the restaurant they didn't crowd me like other places I've been. I had the small sushi combo. 1 roll, i chose the crunch roll which was shrimp tempura avocado with the tempura crunch on the outside, and 6 pieces of nigiri. I could have chosen the type but I opted for chefs choice. It was the standard spread of shrimp, couple types of tuna, salmon and mackerel. The sushi was fresh and had proper flavor. Roll was ample and the shrimp wasn't over cooked. The iced tea wasn't bitter. However, I'm used to sushi with wasabi placed between the fish and the rice. They do no such thing. Not saying its right or wrong, that's just how it is. Just had to add it from the blob on the side.

Went for lunch. It was not busy, and the service was great. No grumpy waitresses here today. Got edamame and some various rolls. All came out promptly, presented well, and was really good, especially considering the area. The menu was big so we will definitely want to go back and try out some of the other stuff.

I really like the sushi here - fresh tasting and lots to choose from. The presentation is nice too, and if you order a lot, it will arrive on a wooden boat :) The restaurant itself is on the small side so it can get really busy. We went last night (Friday) and it was packed until close. There are only two sushi chefs so be aware - this means that you will wait a while if it is busy. This seems to bother some other reviewers but I think that is what comes when sushi is made when you order, not prepackaged. The sushi chefs are super nice so try to sit at the bar. They like to chat and offer you little plates of seaweed or mochi. Overall, great sushi. Service on the slow side but worth the wait for the food.

The fish served was nice... not excellent. The pieces cut were small and very thin; something I am not used to in my travels throughout the US. Service was a little slow, and the place was not crowded; even the water took a long time to come. Servers were friendly and apologized for the wait. Very friendly place but quality and portion size compared to price, are not top notch as I have seen through my many travels. HOPEFULLY, they will see this post and upgrade their portions and service... not to be mean, but helpful.

Great sushi! The dynamite roll is highly recommended--I usually don't like anything "warm" in sushi, but the cooked mushrooms, scallops, and onions on top of the dynamite roll are insanely amazing. I could eat at Sushi Ya daily!

Not living up to all of the reviews previously received by other yelpers. I guess for the Tri Cities, it is pretty good, but when you are this close to the coast, I would expect better.

I'm sitting here the day after a horrible sushi meal across the country wishing instead I'd eaten at Sushi Ya. They just seem to get it right almost all the time. When I've gotten take out I haven't been that impressed, you don't get the extra sauce that makes some of the rolls amazing since it's used for plate decoration. Worth the wait to sit and eat though!

Love this place! The fish has always been fresh, the waitstaff and chefs friendly, prices very reasonable and the clientele diverse. Food 5 stars - people watching 4. Oh yeah, I would have never think...Franks Roll was delicious!

  • Bobbi R.

Simply AMAZING! We started with some much needed Sake and fried calamari...then we enjoyed the spicy Frank roll, Firecracker roll and the very different Hawaiian roll. The Hawaiian roll had a slightly sweet sauce that was a nice balance with the spicy rolls we ordered. Everything was beautifully presented and fresh! Our server Rosa, was attentive and charming. We will return as we are new to the area and somewhat Sushi snobs. We heard this was the best in town and it was delish! The 2 Sushi chefs were very personable. We went early evening as I had read other reviews about how busy it gets. There are only 10 tables so plan accordingly.

This place is amazing!!! I just moved here from So Cal and the first thing I looked for was good sushi! Everywhere in So Cal has good sushi.. NOT IN THE TRI CITIES!! I have been to a few places and this place would have been the last place I would ever try. I looked here on yelp and read the reviews so I thought what the heck, i'll try it... Fresh!! Cheap!!! Best sushi here in town!!!! I enjoy straight raw fish so it must be cold and fresh or I could never eat it.. This is the place to get just that!!! Best of all is that they are not stingy on the amount of fish they give you! GO!!!!

This is so COOOLLLLL!!! A real sushi place in the Tri-Cities. Both times I went there I had super service even though it was crowded. I loved the food. I got one special and another time a salad. I hope they flourish in an area where diversity is needed but not always welcomed.

Coming from Seattle sushi is great and I waited two years before trying any sushi here. I have been to almost all the sushi places in this area And sushi ya is my favorite. They have classic rolls and tons of wonderful concoctions! I strongly suggest the dynamite roll, Malibu, Daniel, and las Vegas. The only problem is the size of the restaurant. Its location won't allow for expansion and when that place gets busy you can be there for a couple hours. I would love to see them in a new location.

This was our first time at this restaurant. We went during the week at about lunch time. Not too crowded and service was very good. Nice clean place with friendly staff. Good presentation and very nice, fresh tasting sushi that was made when ordered. A member of our party had the teriyaki chicken and was pleased with her order. We will definitely go back to this restaurant and we will recommend to our friends.

I'm somewhat new to the area from Los Angeles so I'm a bit picky when judging sushi, but considering the area I'll say it's pretty decent. The two problems I have with this restaurant are that the prices are a little higher than other places in town, which isn't too big of a deal, but the big problem is the service, and that will keep me from ever coming back. I've read the other reviews on here and I can't see how anyone could say that the service here is good. I've been twice and both times I had to wait at least 10 minutes to order, and another 10 to get my check after the table was cleared off, and this is when they weren't busy. The waitress both times I went here looked annoyed, was slow, and overall terrible.

We are a huge fan of Sushi Ya! Our favorite item on the menu: the Daniel Roll. We've been going to Sushi Ya for a couple years now, and have always been happy with our food and service. Recently, the husband/wife team sold the place. My understanding is that it's now run by two brothers from Portland, who are like 4th generation Itamae (this is all gossip, so I have no idea how accurate this is). We've always been happy with Sishi Ya, but WOW - the new guys sure know what they are doing! To those reviewers who consider themselves to be sushi snobs and found the place to be so-so: I suggest you try the place out again. We've noticed quite an improvement in the taste and presentation. As for service, we do miss the old guy behind the counter - he was really nice. But the waitstaff continue to do a good job, and the brothers seem to be nice, as well. Oh - and they now have mochis! Strawberry and mango. PS - The info at the top says it's a good place for kids, but actually it's NOT. Leave your kids with the babysitter. Or better yet, take your kids to Sushi Mori, which seems more kid-friendly.

I was visiting Tri-Cities from San Francisco and found this place on Yelp. I am a bit of a sushi snob and found this place to be really good. The place was rather crowded. There is a pretty extensive menu. All the fish was very fresh and the portions are pretty big. The spicy tuna roll was really good. I only ordered 2 rolls, 1 nigiri and miso and it was more than enough food. The negatives are it's hard to find. You can't see the addresses from the street. The strip mall is set back and the other businesses are closed at night. The service was not great. She forgot my salad and never checked back with me to see if I wanted anything more to drink or eat. I was sitting at the bar but the chefs were just focused on making the sushi. A man next to me sat for at least 10 minutes and no one checked in with him or let him order. Overall, a great find.

A real sushi joint in Kennewick?! I had been missing the big city sushi restaurants, and I am sorry but Sushi (sub n jeans) & Sushi Mori were just a lack luster fast food version of what I had grown to love. The soft-shell crab is to die for and their Edimame is my daughter's favorites!

  • Jeff K.

My wife and I have eaten here several times. We prefer to set at the sushi bar and interact with the owners, a very nice husband/wife team. On a recent visit we noticed that we hadn't been charged for one of our rolls and the sushi chef was so appreciative of our honesty that he created a special roll for us, on the house. Everything we have had here has been very, very good.

  • Allan K.

I like Sushi Ya better than Sushi Mori. The atmosphere is better especially with the sushi bar. I don't recall there being a wall of pictures of food offerings as with Mori; making Mori feel like a cheap Chinese restaurant. I haven't had the Teriyaki there but the selection of sushi blows Mori out of the water.

Stopped in last week with my wife and daughter for a Sushi fix. Having just moved back to the area after a long stint on the westside I was not expecting much but figured what the heck. Ordered one of the large combo platters that comes in the "big boat". The sushi was OK and I did not find a lot to gripe about but sadly I've had lots better too... the tuna had been frozen. However, the rolls were outstanding and that would be my recommendation - skip the sushi and sashimi and just load up on a bunch of rolls. You'll find them to be on-par with anything in the better sushi spots (and I've been to a lot of them all over the US). Finished up with some green tea ice cream (sadly no mochi but hey the ice cream was fine). Final bill was around $60. The service we had was prompt, friendly, excellent even, and the waitress we had went out of her way to make sure we were having a good night. There were maybe 4 other tables of diners when we went.

We've always had excellent sushi at Sushi Ya, we tend to go earlier (closer to 4 or 5) but service has never been a problem. My wife and I have been enjoying sushi ya for several years and her being from New England it absolutely compares to the better sushi places there. For fish being frozen we've never had a problem but if it's a fresh water fish (salmon included) it is always flash frozen to be considered sushi grade, otherwise it runs the risk of parasites and can't be served. Honestly though we come for the rolls, the caterpillar roll is fantastic and the crunch dragon (a spicy tuna roll with a nice crunch and a fantastic finishing sauce) and sushi ya roll (a nice roll topped with a baked scallop and a mildy spiced mayonnaise sauce) are good for anyone, even those being introduced to sushi. My wife's favorite is the sashimi roll which uses a cucumber wrapping instead of the traditional seaweed wrapping (though there is still seaweed to keep it together). Even the miso and vento boxes are tasty and good alternatives to those who aren't as big of sushi fans in your party. We've used sushi ya to make converts of both my parents as well as to introduce my sister and niece to good sushi. Overall this is easily the best sushi restaurant in town and one of the better ones we've been to altogether.

This is the new Sushi place in the Tri-Cities, it is bigger than Sushi Mori and has an actual bar to sit at. It is located in the strip mall next to Value Village. The food was good, nothing special but this is a great addition to the limited restaurant scene in Tri-Cities. My wife and I got here at 6pm and the place was pretty full, we were the last of about 4 tables to show up so our food took almost an hour to get to us. The table right before us ordered 6 rolls and a alot of Sashimi for 3 people, took forever to make. The service was pretty slow as well because there was only one waitress for the whole place. If the service improved I would definitely give this place four stars, the fish is fresh for the area and presentation is also nice.
