Best lunch in town!! Crab cakes are off the charts, as is the clam linguini! Came back next day had a repeat!!! Go early or you will be turned away or on a list!

Fresh local ingredients that are hard to beat. The salad with crab and marionberry crumble were the standouts.

Staff was awesome and the food just as awesome. Very very fresh and tasted nothing but quality! A little gem on the island for sure! Loved the salt and pepper shaker mills

Yum!! Great atmosphere, super friendly service, gorgeous food and an affordable bottle of champagne mean I'll definitely be back next time I get to visit Orcas.

Fantastic brunch here for our first time to Orcas Island! We came on the Friday morning of 4th of July weekend around 10 am. When we first arrived the dining room was about half full but when we left it was hard to spot an empty table. All of the baked goods in the counter look great, the kitchen is open air, they have a nice patio outside but they weren't seating anyone out there when we first arrived, and they had a limited menu but with good selections. Three of us ordered the poached eggs on potato nest while I was the only one that ordered the crispy polenta cakes with a poached egg, greens and a spicy red sauce. Order this!! I wanted to lick my plate clean and that wasn't because I was left hungry. The eggs all around were cooked perfectly, the polenta and potato nests were actually crispy but not burnt. The greens were nicely cooked and added another element to the dish but the real winner was that super delicious spicy sauce. Oh wow! Staff was friendly and checked in when needed but were also quite busy. The food coming out of the kitchen was a little slow and the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Cafe vitta coffee is another win!

Meh. Feh. Shrug. Whatever. After many days of hasty breakfasts of just toast and coffee, I was craving an old-fashioned feast of eggs, bacon, and hash browns, or a waffle with fresh berries, or some French toast. Rose's is NOT the place to go for this. Rose's scant menu had little variety. Want eggs? You get your choice of poached, poached, or poached. No omelets, no scrambles, no over-mediums. You'll have poached eggs and like it, serf. Want cheese? Gruyere or nothin'. Want bacon? Suck it; your ration is two shavings of prosciutto, and that's the only meat choice there is. Want potatoes? One dish on the menu comes with potatoes; the rest include only toast or a baguette. (And most of the toast-or-baguette dishes are strictly continental breakfasts that do not include eggs, just cheese or butter.) You can't order a side of potatoes or bacon. You can't make substitutions. In Rose-ia, breakfast order YOU. For $14, I got a salad plate with the closest thing on the menu that I could find to a hearty breakfast: a hash brown nest with two poached eggs, and two sheets of prosciutto, each about the size and thickness of a personal check. Drip coffee is $2, and for that, you schlep your own refills from a pump carafe on the counter. No one refilled my water glass, ever. No one asked, after my meal finally arrived 20 minutes after ordering, whether I needed anything or if everything was all right. I see a lot of apologists here claiming that smug, indifferent, high-priced scantiness is to be expected because quality blah blah local ingredients blah blah. I call bullshit. Why? Because when I'm not on the island, I live near two of the best breakfast places in the Northwest. The Maltby Cafe, for example, kicks Rose's stuck-up little ass with their variety and generosity, and they also use local ingredients, seasonal fruits and vegetables, their own breads and pastries, and scratch-made house recipes. What's the difference? The difference is that a place like Rose's is all about Rose, or whoever the owner is. It's about the food philosophies that Rose wants to impose on her diners. A place like the Maltby Cafe is about their diners, and what makes them happy. I'm a diner, not a restaurateur, so thanks, but I prefer the latter.

We've been going to Rose's regularly for at least 15 years. It remains the best food on Orcas, but it is worth remembering that the demand for meals fluctuates wildly from month to month. Come to Orcas in the winter and feel the care that goes into this food. Come to Orcas in the summer and you may find a frazzled staff. Based on many visits, here's what we know: The staff is expert and knowledgeable. They can get stretched so ask questions but try to help them get you served. The food is prepared from scratch from local ingredients. That costs more so prices might be higher than you'd expect. But these guys do it to produce better food and the quality is first rate. Learn about Island Time. That can be hard with small children but slow down enough to enjoy Orcas and it's quirks. The food and the people at Rose's are really remarkable but you may miss both if you aren't prepared to take your time. You are not in the Big City when you are in Eastsound........

The food here is fresh and had quality ingredients. Prices for some items seemed very steep. I had a BLAT sandwich. A Bacon Lettuce and Avocado Sandwich. It had some avocado smeared on the inside and two pieces of bacon. The sandwich came with a teaspoon of potato salad. That was $12. The patio is pet friendly and the service was nice and attentive. The value was not there for the price.

I have been here a couple of times and both were consistently good. The food is yummy and the service is very good. I find the prices to be a bit high for what you get, compared to other similar establishments nearby. We went for lunch and it felt like we were paying dinner prices for small lunch portions. Other than that, it is a really nice place with great food.

Cute little place for delicious breakfast and good coffee. We had the poached eggs and truly enjoyed the dish. Excellent flavors and a really cute atmosphere, perfect for a pre hike brunch!

The best thing I have ever eaten on vacation at the San Juan Islands was at a place called Rose's Restaurant on Orcas Island. It was burrata, olive oil over sliced heirloom tomatoes and basil with a sprinkling of crunchy salt. Everyone I was with was absolutely bowled over by this! This is a seasonal item.

  • Joanna S.

I accidentally ordered the wrong thing (because the menu had very similarly named items) and the waitress was unwilling to fix the mistake or do anything to help me make the experience right, except to point out it was my fault. Her attitude was all like "too bad so sad." Not only that but the food was terrible. Rubbery, dry eggs. And the wait for our bad food took an hour.

This place certainly caters to an older crowd. I personally found the food on the bland and boring side. While excellent quality and well executed, nothing popped or really gave me a reason to finish my plate.

Absolutely loved this place! Everything we ordered was perfectly prepared, with the freshest ingredients. We will definitely be back!! Friendly staff, excellent food.

Lovely place. Lovely staff. Passable food. At best. Both our dishes were heavily-salted (I love salt, so when I complain, you know it's excessive). The waitress offered to comp our meal -which was very nice, but unnecessary. A local told us it's the best bakery in town. Having eaten at the other well-known bakery several times over the years, I don't agree.

Our recent trip to Orcas Island yielded a lot of wonderful culinary delights and experiences that I will cherish for many years. Our experience at Rose's Bakery and Cafe was definitely not one of them. It was the second-to-last day of our vacation on Orcas Island, and I had originally committed to making dinner for everyone. Like I am sure many of you have experienced though, it was the end of my vacation and I just did not feel like cooking that night. So, we made a last minute decision to try Rose's because of the good reviews my fellow Yelp'ers have written. Food: Under-seasoned, and a complete lack of flavor are the themes for this meal. For starters, they had a mussels special that they were advertising as an appetizer, and I think I have a pretty good idea why. The mussels arrived at the table with incredible promise as it was a monstrous bowl of mussels, piled-high and cooked in a white sauce. Gosh, they looked amazing -- that was, until you ate them and realized that not only were they bland; but some of them tasted a bit older than the others. My guess? They were cycling-out some shellfish that was rapidly approaching expiration. That may be untrue, but some of them had a distinctly 'fishier' flavor. You know, the flavor of seafood when it is about to expire. Anyway, our party of 6 ate about a third of them. When the waitress came, we expressed our dislike for them, and figured they would do the right thing when the bill came (I'll continue this later). For our lunch, one of our group members had the pizza with assorted meats, where I had the ham and cheese on a baguette with some fancy butter scraped across the top. This was, literally, the worst ham and cheese sandwich I have ever had. It, literally, tasted like nothing -- zero flavor! The ham was bland, the cheese (which I believe was gruyere and should have imparted a beautiful nutty undertone) was bland, the butter was bland. I could have made a better sandwich with Oscar Mayer products and week-old bread. If this sandwich were $6, I would not be as dissatisfied, but it was over double that (more to come). Food: 2 / 5 (one person in our party thought the food was alright) Service: Though the service was kind, it was pompous. From asking if they had Pepsi (where the waitress snobbishly referenced us to the wall of 'fancy' beverages behind our table), to the haughty response to my wife asking what was in the 'slaw' that accompanied our sandwiches (which I believe was celery root) -- all the way to our mussels not being half-priced or at-cost-priced. I understand that I ordered them; but the 'right' thing to do is to at least identify that an entire table of people disliked your food, and should not be penalized for your inability to cook fresh food. Service: 1/5 (ignorant, haughty service with no desire to make a situation 'right') Atmosphere: This is an extremely charming, little restaurant that has a delightful little shop attached. I would frequent a place modeled like this, as I found it very cozy. However, the uptight attitude, coupled with seemingly inflated self-importance that Rose's boasts is a major turn-off. Atmosphere: 2 / 5 Price: Possibly the worst value for food I have ever experienced in my entire life. Between the under-seasoned and under-flavored mussels, the bland ham and cheese, and the sub-standard service coupled with brilliant arrogance, I would rather spend my money at McDonald's -- and I haven't eaten there since 2007. Price: 1 / 5 (a $14 sandwich? Really? And THAT is what I got...) Final Thoughts: In a touristy area, there are always 'those places' that use the natural foot-traffic of an area to try and serve food that doesn't even remotely live-up to the inflated cost of its products and services. As shocking as this may seem, given the high average-stars Rose's has achieved, they are definitely one of them. This was one of the worst dining experiences I have had in a very long time. This is why it gets 1-star overall -- for its uniquely awful service, and tourist-trap prices on uninspired food.

We had grav lox and croque Monsieur The salmon on the grav lox was smoked to perfection, heirloom tomatoes, and fresh baked rye bread...simply delicious!! The croque Monsieur was delicious with melted cheese, ham and the added egg. Would highly recommend this place for breakfast.

Good atmosphere and serving staff. Food was good but not at the level of the decor or the price. Kitchen staff is slow moving and unfriendly. Overall an OK but not nearly as good of a place as the rest of the reviews display.

How can you not love this great place, they do so many things so well. Service is wonderful, the food is frequently local and REALLY good. Breakfast rocks too, so don't miss out on that if you haven't tried it. I would eat here everyday if I could afford to :)

We came to Roses over a year ago and had a lovely experience, delicious food, and beyond fantastic service. This memory is what prompted us to return. However, something was distinctly different and unfortunately our good memory faded into a dream as the reality of the place in its current rendition sank in. Atmosphere: The ambiance is lovely and the space is well appointed. The attached delicatessen is, without a doubt, the best part of the experience; wines, bread, cheese, charcuterie, cookware and imported foods. Service: Incredibly aloof. From the time we were seated to our interaction with the waitstaff I was concerned by the thousand yard stare theme that seemed to be endemic with the waitstaff. Our pigtailed server seemed kind of glossed over and when we presented her with menu questions there was a definite heir of patronization from her we found incredibly insulting. My suggestion to the owner, address that situation immediately because I know first hand how that plays out. BAD! Aside from the semi-snide service and glossy eyes food did come promptly from the kitchen. Food: Our pizza was the best part of the meal...However, strange that the pizza should be the entree premiere in this kind of place. I must warn everyone to do yourselves a favor and don't order the ham and gruyere sandwich unless you like butter....like a solid inch of butter. Instead that sandwich should be called the "mouth coater" because your mouth is literally schelacked in butter while you consume the thing. Seriously, it is a laughable and obscene sandwich that costs about $16. Yikes!! So, don't get the butter sandwich or like two of our party you will be sad while you watch your guests eat pizza. We also tried the halibut which was cooked well, was very fresh and came with not enough slaw and two daintily appointed olives. Our espressos were bitter from improper execution. To summarize, Roses is not what we remembered it. The service has gotten, unfortunately, very lackadaisical and snotty and the cuisine that was once so well imagined and divinely ordained has become hastily slapshod as if the mission is now, hang on and just get the job done. I hope the owners dream is not dead and the great Roses we remember from yesteryear might reappear. My advice is to go to the deli and order some well selected cheese and charcuterie....select a nice bottle and take it to go.

If it were entirely up to me, I would give the food 5 stars, hands down. My baked eggs were one of the best breakfast items I've ever eaten. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because my husband had the breakfast sandwich and thought it was just OK. The server was nice enough, but not overly attentive. Good ambiance. I would definitely go again...my husband probably would not.

Receive several recommendations to try this as a great place to pick up lunch on the way out to whale watch. Unfortunately well the store opens with the bakery and deli products, we found it interesting that they will sell you bread, cheese and meat yet not actually make you a sandwich! They said we'd have to come back in a couple of hours in order it from the actual restaurant. And its called a bakery yet there were only a few loaves of bread behind the counter and no pastries to be seen up front. Seriously disappointed, and left without buying anything for our honeymoon trip.

I cannot say that I would recommend this restaurant to friends and family. I was here with a family member who has a food allergy, and the waitress' response to her when she asked if there was dairy on a menu item was, "I guess I can go check". She came back, stopped for two seconds and said, "nope," and walked away. She did not check on us during the meal to ask how we were, or ask us how the food was. We were not asked if we wanted a drink refill until after the check arrived. Although the food was good, I would not define it as awesome, and I would not return again just to eat it. I would not put myself through the poor, rude, sub-standard service just for a fairly good meal. I think that if the managment hired happier staff the experience would be more enjoyable. This is unfortunate because in a small town there are not too many choices for eating out. They also sell speciality food and wine in the adjoining shop. The staff in there are exceptionally rude. Again, would not return due to the treatment, and I wonder how this establishment stays in business.

Delicious sandwiches! All the food here is good, but I particularly like the halibut sandwich. It's sooooo flavorful and fresh. It's lovely to sit outside during the summer... there can be quite a wait for one of these tables, especially when it's warm out. The prices are a little high, but the quality of food makes up for this. They also tend to run out of certain items on the menu, so get there early!

My mom and I just enjoyed 4 days on beautiful Orcas Island and ate at Roses twice. Such a special place. For lunch I had a made-to-order seafood cioppino, although I don't know if that's the correct description. It was so fresh and delicious, and my mom had a freshly grilled hallibut sandwich that was also excellent. We loved it so much that we came back for breakfast and we were so glad we did. I had the ranchero eggs with house-made corn cakes. They call them tortillas but being from texas I can tell you they are not tortillas. But they are super tasty with the chile and eggs. Special. My mom had the eggs on potato cake and it was also outstanding. And I haven't even mentioned the rhubarb muffin. Out of this world. And their house-made breads!! Must try and I can't wait to return someday.

Best nosh on Orcas, hands down. Had a halibut sandwich at Rose's Bakery & Cafe and that was one simple, sensational sandwich. Everything on that sandwich was perfect from the toasted sourdough bread, to the moist pan fried halibut, the vine ripened tomatoes, the red onion and the flavorful remoulade. The kids grilled cheese was a professional, foodie version that any parent would drool over, yet simultaneously it proves enjoyable to to the little people too. (Um, pray for left-overs.) A really great sandwich shop, food fired pizzas, simple, delicious and probably the most consistent, sophisticated and relaxed dining option (breakfast or lunch) on Orcas.

My tummy is doing flip flops as it recalls the fantastic food we experienced here. I had been here before so recalled it was good, but it pleasantly exceeded the expectations I had based on memory. We came here for an early lunch, just as breakfast closed out and right before the lunch menu was even printed. As the server explained, everything is fresh and they decide on the menu day-of, which is an indication of the quality of this place. After having given the option of breakfast and perusing the menu, we decided to wait to see what the lunch menu offered. The server highly recommended the seafood Provençal soup, so we picked that and a clam linguini dish. They were both amazing!! My preference leaned more towards the linguini which was perfectly seasoned and prepared. It was delicious and I would order it fifty more times if I lived there. This focus, however, should not shadow how yummy the soup was. Finally, the service definitely gets 5 stars on its own. As any of you who read my reviews knows, food is always my focus on these reviews and service sometimes gets a mention (usually if unsatisfactory). Here, our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and knew when and how often to interact. 5 stars all around!!

My family and I had lunch at Rose's on our way back to the mainland. We had some ice latte's because it was hot. Skip the latte's, they were bitter and not up to par, 2/5. My sons had the cheese pizza, they were happy, I tried a bit and it was tasty. I ordered a ham a Gruyere sandwich on a croissant. It came out on a baguette but I didn't mention it because I was both starving, and that would have put my meal behind the group. Also, the waitress did not seem to like us much, she was kind of cold and distant, but she served us competently. The baguette was good, but a bit chewy (arguably like a baguette should be), but a croissant would have been better for the sandwich. The food at Rose's is very high quality and very tasty. I also had a mushroom soup and my wife had a creamy tomato soup that I sampled. Both soups were very good. The price is a bit high, $14 for just the sandwich. We spent close to $85 for a lunch for two adults and two children, which is a bit much, but the food was good, and it is Orcas Island. Espresso drinks are a pass, but everything else was really good. Value was not great, but I still would give it four stars considering the location.

We had a lunch at Roses in split shifts and were pleased with the food. I had a seafood chowder, My daughter had mussels, my other daughter had a double portion of kids pasta and my husband had the bratwurst sandwich AND pizza. The food was delicious and fresh, the chowder was more like a soup and not calorie laden. Mussels, bratwurst and pizza were all tasty. I would eat here again. Warning-it is a little pricey.

Rose's Bakery has the best pizza on the island. The wine selection is also fantastic and if you're looking for a wide variety of gourmet cheeses and olives this is the place. They make fresh pies that can be taken home and baked plus lots of fresh baked breads daily. If you need a gift for someone there are great options such as cookware, utensils, and ingredients. The setting for breakfast and lunch in the cafe' is outstanding.

My review is for the bakery side only - As that is all we tried. So glad we stumbled on this place. Whole family loved it and it we were not staying on Friday Harbor a ferry ride away we would have been back every day. We tried the following and would highly recommend them. -Doughnut Muffins (Wish we would have bought more) -Molassas Ginger Cookie (AWESOME!!!!) -Nectarine pie

We split the thin crust pizza with marinara, pancetta and rosemary and a bottle of French red wine. Pizza was amazing - cheesy, greasy and authentic thin crust. Bottle was $25 and very drinkable. A little heavier than table red, and paired nicely with the pizza. Service was friendly and ambiance was casual. Connects to a fun cheese/meats/wine shop. Check it out and have a relaxing meal. Also on the menu was a small variety of sandwiches, soups and specials (pasta, pot pie, etc). They seem to have a daily menu and a couple items were crossed out when we got there around 2pm.

Based on the mostly excellent reviews we decided to give Rose's a try for lunch. I ordered the lamb stew, which at $22 was pretty expensive. For the money it was a rip off, about a half dozen small pieces of low quality lamb and the rest of the dish was potatoes, carrots and turnips. No spices seemed to have been added to the dish. My girlfriend ordered a pasta dish, I've forgotten exactly what it was, lasagna I think - it was okay but too much salt was used. Service was very poor, the servers never once asked us if the food was okay. They did ask us a couple of times if we would like to order something else. Overall Rose's is overpriced and not recommended.

  • Tiffany M.

Based on these reviews we ordered the halibut sandwich. When the waitress set our plates down, we both looked at each other and could not believe how small of a piece of halibut they put on the sandwich. The halibut was so small that it barely fit in the middle of the bread. Not only that, but the helping of cole slaw must have been all of two tablespoons. But it came with a hefty price tag of $15. I recommend that you note that others who also commented on the price and the size of the portions before you decide if you want to eat here or go someplace else.

This was our second visit to Rose's Cafe. Yes, like the other reviewers have indicated, the food is delicious if not a bit overpriced. Yes, the service is decent if not overly friendly. These are not criticisms, and only repeat what most of the other reviewers have already said about this restaurant. But at least one reviewer touched on something that we encountered, which one of my fellow diners call "petty greediness". We were a party of four adults, one well behaved child and one sleeping infant. We had just finished our dessert and were not quite done with our coffee. We had spent about $100, and had been seated at our table for just over an hour. Instead of asking if our coffee cups could be refilled, a hostess came over and tersely asked us to leave so that they could accommodate a large party. If not for the shock of her rudeness, one of us would have, should have responded rudely in kind. Opportunity missed, all we have is this forum to say that petty greediness is not what one would or should expect from a restaurant of this caliber. But that was our experience, so don't be surprised if this is what you encounter: a well prepared (not inexpensive) meal, served up in a businesslike manner, with an ungracious hostess asking you to leave immediately after you've paid your bill. There are other dining options in Eastsound. We're back to Orcas again in September with four others. We will not be coming here again.

I spend a good deal of time on Orcas and, while I LOVE the food at Roses, I have to say that I am quite put off by he ill-mannered tourists who come in demanding everything from 10,000 year old aged cheese and better wine than you could possibly get at a fine bistro in NYC or Paris. My favorite: When I am in the grocery part of the store, the most heinous people come in, yelling: "OH THANK THE LORD! I FINALLY FOUND CASTELVETRANO OLIVES ON THIS GOD FORSAKEN ISLAND!" Bottom line: the food is very good--just put your headphones on and ignore the annoying Whole Foods tourists!!!

This restaurant and combo bakery/deli/kitchen supply shop is very nice inside and looks to have a nice selection of local shellfish on the menu. A slice of pie will cost you $6 and a slice of cake, $7. I only tried the pie and found it to be not worth the steep price. Wanted to try breakfast, but they are closed on Sundays and don't serve brunch (or breakfast later) on weekdays, so we missed out on that.

This place came highly recommended, but was a bit disappointing. My halibut sandwich was pretty good. The "prosciutto" pizza was greasy and not so great. It seemed to be just good ole bacon. It was fair.

I've been to Rose's for brunch, lunch and dinner. It's tops on my list for casual but tasty dining on Orcas. The quality of the food is excellent. It can be spendy for a simple meal, though. The portion size for the price is a little on the small side. When the plate arrives, I admit I'm a little worried about not being full. But by the end of the meal, I'm usually perfectly satisfied. I think it is the care and quality that goes into the food that makes the difference. But if you're in the mood for a Claim Jumper type of meal, you might want to go elsewhere. I've had the most enjoyment from their soups, meat entrees (rabbit was quite tasty), salad (vibrantly fresh), and pizza (super thin crust, tasty ingredients). Their baked egg dish and the two sandwiches I've tried thus far have been kind of ho-hum - good, not amazing. Great french bread. Even though this is a bakery, I haven't tried much of their baked goods. They _look_ good. I'll have to update once I've tried some more stuff. Oh, and they serve Caffe Vita coffee and espresso. Yummmm. Service can sometimes be a little slow, and could use a little more personal warmth and checking up on things like refilling water and such. But overall they get the job done. Ambience is cozy, clean and relaxed. I like that you can see into the kitchen, with the cooks efficiently preparing meals, and the gentle flames in the wood-fire oven for their yummy thin crust pizzas. Attached to the restaurant is an upscale deli/bakery store. It has a supply of super-fancy cheeses and meats, fresh-baked pastries, and kitchen tools (if you're looking for a marinade injector, or a salt cellar, look no further).

I have always wondered what the big fuss was all about over locally grown produce and what not. Never understood and could tell the difference until I went here and ate off their menu. All the ingredients are grown locally on the island. Most of the meats are from one of the farms on the island. Each dish I tried was flavorful and fragrant. The texture of their chicken pot pie was amazing. Just the right amount of crispiness of the crust. There was ample portions of locally grown and harvested carrots, peas, and onions. The free range chicken was unbelievably tender and moist. I can go on and on... I highly recommend this restaurant if you are ever in the Orcas Island area. It is a little pricey, but it makes for a nice dinner date place and definitely will change your mind about going all organic or locally grown.

I spent a month on Orcas Island and I visited Rose's three times too many. The food is good but incredibly overpriced. A chicken sandwich with prosciutto, lettuce, tomato for $16. Nothing else on the plate but some olives. The biggest problem is the attitude of the staff. They are rude and unhelpful to a degree that is astonishing. It's really a shame since the concept is great, the adjoining shop has a nice selection of meats, cheese, bread and wine that is not found elsewhere on Orcas.

Came for breakfast and the pastries were good. Tried the eggs and they were good. The star was definitely the baked good, though. If you want the bird's nest, you have to order it pretty early as they can only make a certain number at a time (due to the potatoes taking a long time to cook). It is a nice place to have a meal on Orca's Island.

The kind of food you want to eat everyday. The best choice for lunch on the island by far! I've loved everything I've had here and I've been here 15-20 times. Never had anything but spectacular. They use quality ingredients and you can taste it in every bite. Love the soups, the fresh baked breads, the attention to detail. My favorite sandwich is the halibut....mmmm! I wish I had a Rose's close to my home but for now I'll have to settle for visiting when I come to stay at my mom's house on the island.

Very busy place on the weekends. Get there early for a good selection of bread and pastries. Loved the blueberry scone, baguette was good, but not France-good, but I'm a big fan of good baguettes. I wish. Had more time in Eastsound and tried out their cafe and sausage. The pies looked great too!

We stopped in on a sunny Saturday in July, at around 1. We were 2 couples in our 30's and 2 toddlers under 2. They only had 1 high chair available, since it was apparently baby's weekend, and the others were being used. They were also busy and the patio was full so we ate inside. Those 2 things are the only thing keeping our experience from 5 stars. The food was delicious, new and wonderful. My husband had a lamb meatloaf sandwich that he guarded like a man in prison when I asked for a bite of the meat for the toddler. He eventually was shamed into sharing, but when a man wants to keep food out of the mouth of his own child you know it's pretty good stuff. I got the salami sandwich, w and it was so good, The chewy fresh bread with the salty cured meat and the cheese was just the best. I also ordered a cup of the asparagus soup, and I was unimpressed. Kind of watery not creamy at all and sort of bland, but that might have be in comparison to how good the sandwich was. Though I wouldn't waste tummy space or money on it again. Our friends got a beet salad that looked really fresh and light and they split a sandwich. The guys ordered draft beer, manny' I think and the girls had iced tea, brewed there, unsweetened, just how I like. We looked at the attached bakery and goodies shop while our food was made, My husband was impressed by the wine selection and prices. We bought a big donut shaped loaf of bread big enough to feed 8 for our brie and bread by the camp fire later that night, Ht bread was so good. Chewy tasty crust fluffy eggy yummy center. We also got a little chocolate cupcake for our little one, since mommy and daddy were so greedy with the sandwiches and noone likes the soup. She loved it! There was chocolate ganache under her fingernails for a day! Great restaurant and great shop!

Purchased a relatively small $7 granola. Looked delicious. Brought it home and smelled and tasted burnt. Although i hope this was a fluke, I recommend smelling the granola before diving in for the purchase.

We went to Rose's for lunch on our first day on Orcas Island, and it was a wonderful way to start off the vacation. We arrived around 1:30 on Monday afternoon and waited about 15 minutes to be seated (there were 4 of us). We got a table outside on the front patio, which was great because we got to enjoy the nice, cool breeze with our meal. Unfortunately, since we got there on the late side, they were out of a few sandwiches on the menu that sounded really good. However, I ended up being quite happy with what I ate. I ordered a bowl of the tomato and feta soup ($7.50) and the marinated red and gold beet salad with goat cheese ($13). For the prices, the servings were a bit small, but the soup and salad together made a perfect filling meal that didn't feel too heavy at all. I tried a bit of the marinara, pancetta, provolone, and rosemary pizza ($15) that someone else in my party ordered, and it was very tasty, although quite salty due to the pancetta. Overall, dining at Rose's was a great experience, and the staff was very friendly. Also, make sure to check out the bakery, which has fresh bread, local cheese, and cute kitchenware; we left with a loaf of rye bread to enjoy during our stay here.

Spent on a week on Orcas and stayed in Eastsound and ate at a lot of place while we were there. The last place we ate at was Rose's and had a late breakfast on our last day. My wife and I wished we both found this place earlier in the week so we could eat there more often. We had no problems there. Place was practically empty (I'm not sure that would be the case all the time, but we came at an odd time) and were promptly seated and the waitress took our order. Food came fairly quickly and I had the egg sandwich, my wife the baked eggs with Gruyere cheese and my son had a waffle. We were thoroughly impress with the quality of the food and the presentation. We all gobbled down our brunch with gusto and will come back next time we head up to the island. Looking forward to trying their lunch menu!

Ok then. We were hoping to land a 5 star restaurant during our Seattle visit. Had to travel Orcas Island for this one. Kind woman @ book store off Main st in East sound recommended Rose's and boy do we owe her. Glad we actually bought a book there. :0) We had two of the specials: halibut, mussel chowder, clam red sauce pasta and pacetta pizza. Chowder: Light saffron cream sauce with leeks, halibut, mussels and chef threw in some local (Lopez Island) clams. Broth was perfect for dunking bread w/ butter. Pasta: Tangy marinara with ample wine, capers...and either caper or lemon juice that had not been cooked all the way off. Pasta was cooked al dente...just right. Pizza: Micro thin crispy crust in 600+ degree kiln stone oven. Long strips of thin sliced pancetta, provolone, rosemary and red sauce. Haven't had it that good since Bianco's in Phoenix which is on par with mom and pop places in southern Italy. We sat at the bar. All happy, friendly employees and quite a rush of customers. I read several reviews about poor service and small portions but both were NOT the case today, 11/13/10 Roses. Had a couple of Manny's ale drafts which were very good too. Large wine selection but felt like beer at lunch. Que bella queste ristorante!

Hail Rose's, full of yum. My heart is with thee. Blessed art thou among restaurants, and blessed is the fruit of thy kitchen, an m-effing CORNED BEEF TONGUE SANDWICH (!) and a slice of unbelievable apricot pie. Holy Rose's, purveyor of blasphemously delicious food, feed us hungry sinners, now and whenever the crap I come back to Orcas Island. Amen.

I was but a mere cabin boy on my way to Canada to seek fame and fortune when a great nor'easter wind blew my ship off its course, cracking us mightily against a dastardly set of rocks just off of a strange island. Fighting my way to shore, I lost consciousness when something hit me square across my brow. When I awoke, I found myself beached on the strange island, alive but shaken. In spite of my gratitude to God for my deliverance from the certain death that had struck my comrades, the island itself looked hostile and foreboding. I struggled further up the beach, still weary and sore from the wayward object that had struck me unconscious, and found myself in a quaint town (which I was later to learn was called "Eastsound" by its inhabitants). It was at this stage that hunger began it's mournful call in my entrails, and I wasn't long in the town before I stumbled upon an establishment that was filled with friendly and efficient men and women of various hair designs and piercings. In answer to my request for a pint of grog and some hearty stew, I was directed instead to a menu that had all sorts of strange (at least to my knowledge) food offerings ("pizza with squash" for one). Nevertheless -- driven almost mad with hunger -- I discovered these foods to be invariably delicious in taste and healthful to the soul and body. Were my lost comrades to have survived and tried such fare! The staff were indeed accommodating and the food wonderful and hearty for a man who had come so near to his end. The warm welcome and the very toothsome lasses who I later learned abounded in this fine town soon convinced this cabin boy that his future lay not in Canada but in Eastsound on the Isle of Orcas. Upon this writing, I have settled down with a faithful and pious wife, three strapping boys, a business selling kites and lattes, and my own Japanese hot soaking tub. It would not be an exaggeration for me to credit this remarkable turnaround in fate and fortune to the staff at Rose's, whose first meal and welcoming service sustained this wet sailor at his most desperate moment.

A really comfortable space. Parking in back is helpful. Service was good and food tasty. A little spendy but for good food on an island that's no surprise. Worth a visit if you feel like "better" quality food in a tourist town. (for Orcas this is a five star establishment, for the PNW region I'd give it a 4 star, if we add in NYC /Miami/SF, I'd go with a solid 3.

I travel to Orcas every year and I routinely end up at this deli because it has some good options for breads, cheeses, and salami-- picnic fare, if you will. Well, I won't be back. I've had enough, frankly. The impolite and slow staff make it miserable. This last visit, I asked for a recommendation for a type of salami to purchase. After all, there are rows and rows of them. "What do you recommend?" I asked. The man stated in a deadpan way, "Everything." He wasn't being funny or helpful. In fact, it appeared he had better things to do than take a moment out of his day to help out a couple of people who had cash in hand. We then settled on a random choice and purchased a baguette to go along with it. I was feeling so awful when I left there and then I discovered my baguette was totally burnt. Unacceptable. I chose not to write a review last year when the cashier stood talking to a customer for 10 minutes as I waited with an unruly toddler. This year, apparently, nothing has changed.

A bit pricey but well worth every dollar! Lunch was fantastic from soup to sandwich to dessert to espresso. Waitress was brief and efficient but when asked abt how she came to be here we ended up in a fun conversation.

This cafe's heart is in the right place, but knowing that won't make the service faster, or the portions bigger, or the prices reasonable. We went here for breakfast (it opened at 10 AM on Saturday) and found ourselves staring down an incredibly limited menu. It's just, we were so hungry! Hunger made us stay. I swears. I ordered the granola with milk and seasonal fruit (+$2, $8 total). Fun fact: "Seasonal fruit" refers to a quarter of a chopped apple. Not a lot to it, and yet, it was easily 20 minutes to a half-hour until this made it to my table. If you're looking for a heartier breakfast, I'd definitely recommend Doe Bay.

What a great place to come for breakfast or lunch on beautiful Orcas Island! Friendly service (all women crew), delicious dishes priced just right that include sandwiches and plates (including perfectly cooked fresh king salmon), coffee drinks (espresso, cappuccino, regular coffee) that are made spot-on, and to crown it all, excellent breads and other baked goods and one of the best blueberry pies to please my dessert-loving heart. Add to that a fine list of wine and beer - we drank a bottle of crisp and full-bodied Chablis at a great price (the wines are also available in the adjoining store part of the restaurant) - and a great atmosphere made up by happy patrons and you know you found the right place.

Best food on Orcas Island. Skip the waterfront view and grab a delicious meal here... the pizzas are amazing. Also, they have this gourmet wine/cheese/charcutterie shop attached that is the perfect place to grab a picnic for the top of Mt. Constitution.

After a long bike ride around Orcas, my husband and I decided to dine at Rose's for some lunch. What a treat! I had the potato and leeks pizza and he had the fresh salmon salad which was like a nicoise. The potato and leeks was a fantastic combo! We both really enjoyed our meals and would recommend this place for a nice lunch or dinner.

Just had the second of two good lunches at Rose's Bakery and Cafe The quality of food is excellent all ingredients seem fresh for the most part home made. Unfortunately, today we were left with a bit of a sour taste. Not from the food but from the ridiculous policy of charging extra for a little bit of mustard on my salami and cheese sandwich! $2!!! Can you believe this??? I am serious!! I was a bit surprised when I first received my sandwich that they did not bring any mustard. Come on, a salami and cheese sandwich with no mustard! I was amazed and brought this to the attention of our server. She had to go "consult" with the manager!! She came back with a message from the manager that seemed more like a lecture than an apology as warranted. Apparently they have a footnote on the menu that states there are extra charges for ANY substitutions! Since when is mustard (a condiment) on a sandwich a substitution??!! It is not like the place is inexpensive. Simple lunch for 3 set us back over $70!! In 2 days we spent about $200 and they want $2 for mustard! Amazing!! Almost but did not completely spoil our lunch.

Had a salami sandwich, salad and a cup of coffee. Their baguettes are fantastic (we picked up two for the remainder of our camping trip based on this sandwich) and the food was top notch. Also, a decent wine selection awaits.

y-UM! Loved everything about this place. The first time we came we were looking for picnic goods - this perfectly fit the bill: fresh baked bread, meats, good cheese. We enjoyed our picnic and came back twice afterwards for breakfast. Good quality, good taste, fresh. We will be back.

ONLY for the Bakery - I don't care for the restaurant, but many are big fans. My one restaurant experience was horrid, but I won't knock it with a bad review as it probably deserves a second chance. The bakery is great. Friendly, knowledgable staff, nice wine selection, best cheese selection on the island, yummy hummus and terrific bread. Nice small selection of specialty cooking items. A great stop on the island.

Rose's is the perfect spot for a great lunch. I had the organic chicken and crimini mushroom soup and a PLAT (pancetta, lettuce, avocado, and tomato) sandwich. The soup was delicious, hearty and full of fresh flavor. It came with a nice hunk of fresh baguette. The PLAT was exquisite, with super-ripe and juicy heirloom tomato slices that are some of the best I've ever had. The fresh-baked bread was dressed with some red-pepper aioli, which added just a touch of spice. This sandwich is what every greasy diner BLT aspires to be. It was served with a bit of side salad that included carrots, wax beans, radishes, cabbage and a wonderful herb dressing. For desert, I had the carrot cake, which was moist and topped with a very smooth cream-cheese frosting.

Notes on Roses: Organic and locally grown foods. Mediterranean/European vibe. Beautiful! Sandwiches, soups, and salads. Baked goods. Small portions. Moderately to expensively priced. Service was busy, distracted and not personable with our table. Okay. Could be better on different trip?

THEE best joint to eat at, on Orcas Island. Modern spin on the European and Northwest classic dishes. Very upscale with obvious thought taken into consideration by using the best ingredients possible. Even though the menu is fairly short, I could hardly make a decision because everything sounded so good. Sounded good? Well it tasted Fantastically Amazing. We got the Orcas Is. Pizza with clams, Marjoram Spice, Fresh Parmesan, and IN HOUSE made sausage. Holy mackerel. Talk about delicious. Nice thin crust, traditional italian style... but don't be fooled. BIG flavor. Best pizza I have ever had... Italian included. For a nice lunch or a slow and sexy dinner, this is the stop on Orcas. Great food all around. Classy sandwiches, salads, and soups top of the menu. For dessert? All freshly made and very delicious. We had the cinnamon ice cream chocolate cake ice cream sandwich... mouth full? Yes, literally! If you're not feeling dessert - pick up a wine, or a roll, or a pastry and be on you're way. This restaurant/deli/bakery has all the essentials to elegant cooking and a great european ambiance that will keep you distracted from the tourist attractions you were first wanting to see. not just good eats... great eats.

I've never had a bad experience here. Everything is agrarian and delicious! I will always recommend the freshly prepared soups and salad selection. The breads go with out saying .... Simply the best! I am also very pleased with their wine selection. If you ever find your self in Eastsound, WA you have to check out this place, you won't be disappointed I promise!

On a recent trip to Orcas we stopped at Rose's Bakery for some picnic supplies on our way to Mt Constitution. We got two rolls (garlic-walnut-asiago), meat, cheese, chocolate, and a bakery treat (oatmeal with raspberry filling). If I had known how good the food was going to be, particularly the bread, I would have have bought extra to take home with us. We live very close to several great bakeries that specialize in bread making, but based on my admittedly limited interaction at Rose's, I think this small island bakery could give our big city bakeries a real run for their money. I definitely recommend a stop if you are visiting Orcas Island. We found the customer service to be very good. Also, they have a great selection of gourmet cooking supplies in their retail section.

Rose's is delicious! After reading the reviews, I knew I had to stop here during our brief stay on Orcas's island. I was excited for the pizza, but what really impressed me was the pasta special of the day. Turned out to be one of the best meals I have ever eaten. Simply Amazing. The pizza was good, but the pasta blew me away. I was in complete bliss during this meal.

If you like pretentious waitstaff - this place is for you! The food was ok; but honestly there are so many other restaurants in the area with better service, you'd be better off going elsewhere.

Been here a couple of times and the food is solidly good. Nothing amazing, but it's fresh and tasty. Service is friendly. Pizza was the best thing going, in my opinion. I thought $6 for a tiny cup of cauliflower soup was a bit steep, but whatever. Overall I had pleasant meals.

This place was well remembered from our last visit two years ago and was planned as our first stop once off the ferry In eastbound - imagine our surprise when we sat down after a 15 minute wait for a table to be told they didn't carry any carbonated soda - hadnt remembered that detail ! Oh we'll we ordered ice tea - then soups and sandwiches however we both have somewhat if an aversion to the harder French baguette bread - difficult to eat and a lot of bread - we had just visited the bakery attached to the restaurant and since this was an extension of the bakery - we opted to request the wonderful multigrain bread that was featured on other sandwiches! The waitress looked at us skeptically or should I say like we had grown another head each and stated that these were premade sandwiches and could not be switched! Okay - we thought we are on vacation what the heck - big mistake - let's just say we received a very hard French baguette sandwich - the roasted red pepper provolone and olive tapenade lacked red pepper except for a sliver of it and the ham and guyere cheese. Had such a layer if butter that you could have used it to bake a batch of cookies when you were done with your sandwich - we ate little and left!

Things to know, The menu changes pretty much everyday! Fresh foods so when they run out, they are out... Breakfast or lunch only, no dinner... When my Fiance says "this sandwich is really good" that is something special because her pallet is much harder to please than mine. She had the Halibut fish sandwich, simple FRESH fillet of halibut, a remeloude, apiece of lettuce and heirloom tomatoes and fresh bread...SIMPLE, AMAZING. I had the Provolone, cappiattio and rosemary pizza....To both me and My fiance it was the BEST pizza we have ever had...again, simply well done. I had a draft beer, Manny's Pale Ale, best pale ale I have ever had (its the only beer on draft so it had better be good right!) And we had dessert, it was a fresh nectarine and peach pie, with homemade Ice Cream...Yum This place was a little pricey, but that is okay when they deliver on the food the way Roses did. We then stepped into the Bakery and were amazed with the selections of Bread, Whine, Cheeses, olive oils etc... What a gem this place is on Orcas Island... I recommend it to anyone and I will be back on the island JUST for lunch! And for those that did not like the service...Try having a personality and engaging them because they were delightful, great tips about the island and they were funny. SO maybe its not them its you?!?!?!

By far and away the best place to eat on Orcas. Such fresh and wonderful ingredients and did I mention the freshly baked bread? Oh man. Their homemade soups and bread are my favorite. The woodfired pizzas are always interesting with lovely cheeses and unique toppings like pumpkin and apples, etc. This last weekend we had a lamb stew and creamy mushroom soup, both were unreal. Their butternut squash soup is my favorite of all time. Pastries and baked goods are also to die for. Highly recommend stopping in for lunch and grabbing some dessert and a baguette for later! Oh, and a bottle of vino while you are at it!

I know....2 stars....can you believe it? In a nutshell, here's why. Really good food, but too expensive (for what you get) combined with horrendous service. Really really horrendous service. Had the food not been pretty darn good, I really would have given this place one star. I have been going to Orcas Island for years and have always felt the restaurant scene was lacking. If I wanted good food, I had to pay way more than I wanted to. If I wanted to keep things on a more reasonable budget, the food I received in return was average at best. So, this time, hoping to find some good food and not have to pay too terribly much (we knew prices before we went), we went here last Friday in a group of 6. We arrived a few minutes before noon which is apparently about 15 minutes before the rest of the lunch crowd arrives. We were seated relatively quickly at a large table inside. I had a stroller and was doing my best to stay out of the way as I quickly put the baby in a high chair and fold the stroller so I could set it somewhere out of the way. In the middle of this process, the tall lady who seated us came by and snottily told me to fold up the stroller and put it outside the front door. Well...first of all, that was rude, and second of all, what did it look like I was doing? I wasn't even in the way for this to have been a problem for her or any of the guests. It was apparent we did not live up to staff standards when all we ordered to drink was water. Anyway, the ordering process occurred relatively quickly. The food took a bit longer than I would have expected to come out...but not to the point that it was annoying. Once the food was served, we never saw a wait-person again. Our water glasses were empty the entire time and no one ever asked how we were doing, or if the food was okay. Had someone come by, I would have asked for some water and a pinch of salt since there was neither salt nor pepper on the table. As we finished our meal, we agreed the food was good. Finally after much time of being finished, someone came and started to clear the table. The tall rude lady from the beginning of the story also came over to help with the clearing process. I asked for a to-go box for 2 pieces of pizza that were still left. After 4 minutes (I counted) she brought me a mangled and woefully small cardboard container and asked me if it would be okay. For fear of waiting any longer, I quickly said yes!! At this point, three of the six of us got up and left to wait outside. The three of us who were left then sat there...and sat there and sat there and sat there for over 10 minutes with a cleared table, waiting for our check. Meanwhile, many people were standing in line waiting for a table. We agreed at this point we weren't going to leave a tip. Finally the bill came and we were unhappy to learn that tip was already included as we had a party of 6. Rather than waste even more time talking with a manager or whatever, we just paid it and got out of there. The menu was limited but offered many creative and good-tasting items. The bakery area looked great and had many customers. I could even get over the prices (for what you get) if the service hadn't been so bad. This was honestly the most thoughtless, inadequate and rude service I have received. None of us will ever go back.

My compliments to the Chef! My sister and I visited the island last Monday and asked the locals where they recommended we have lunch. Hands down, they said, go to Rose's, and I'm so glad we took their advice! We walked in 5 minutes after a power outage, but neither the wait staff nor the customers looked like that bothered them and they carried on like any other day. My sister and I were all ready to settle for the salad and sandwiches we'd ordered when the lights kicked back on. I'm SO glad they did because we switched our orders (to something from the oven/stove) and I had one of the best pizzas of my life for lunch! Haven eaten at Tom Douglas' restaurant, Serious Pie in Seattle, on multiple occasions I can tell you the Chef at Rose's gives Tom a run for his money! The marinara pizza had superb flavor and one of the best executed thin woodfired crusts I've ever tasted. Wonderful experience and a fantastic lunch. We'll be back up on the island again soon, just for lunch at Rose's!

They have it all here at Rose's Bakery & Cafe!! There diversified selection of creamy and hard to find cheeses, succulent cured meats, fresh from the oven baguettes and anything else culinary that one might need for a last minute picnic in Moran State Park is here waiting for you. This store is full of surprises along with a highly knowledgeable and pleasant counter assistants. Orcas Island is lucky to have such a well-developed selection of artisanal foods and top-notch kitchen goods within reach while "roughing it" in this heavenly place on earth.

Based on all the great reviews, my family made a direct path to Rose's after getting off the ferry. We were so underwhelmed, mostly due to the very lame service. The young woman who took our order acted as if we were bothering her. She defintiely had a superior chip on her shoulder. The cinnamon roll we bought was delicious but I will be sure to tell everyone I know to skip this place. Too many other wonderful service providers on the island.

This place has the best lunch options ever! I always beg my boyfriend to go everytime we go up to Orcas. Everything is organic/free range and they have an amazing wine selection. I would recommend any of their spinach salads and their soup of the day is always something delightful. I wish they were open on Sundays...

Delicious simple yet gourmet lunch on Orcas. The penne with lamb inspired us to buy a package of lamb and other meats from local Coffert's farm. The olives were some of the best we've ever tasted. The basic baguette with butter rivaled that in France. The pacific oysters were perfectly buttery. Also loved the cozy and relaxed ambience. Would have loved to eat here again and taste some of the other dishes we were eyeing - lasagne, pizza, salads, sandwiches, and sole. It was all prepared flawlessly.

Rose's has something for every occasion, from a quick little something for breakfast to full entrées. We stopped here at midday for lunch, and Rose's exceeded my expectations in every way. I had a pasta dish (one of the specials) with morels and smoked salmon, and it was one of the best meals I've had in recent memory -- even better than I expected for a moderate $15. Their menu offers quite the selection of salads, appetizers, entrées, and so on. The coffee is pretty good, too: Caffe Vita, if I recall correctly. For fine dining or something lighter, Rose's is an Orcas Island must.

Really, really like Rose's. This is a resturant with indoor and covered outdoor seating, and an attached (fantastic) bakery. Cafe: Open kitchen, airy decor, fresh and fine ingredients, great service. Good salads, ovenfired thin pizza, and entrees under $20. Bakery: wine, cheeses, breads...etc. We always get their chocolate cherry bread from the bakery when it's in season.

This review is about the retail portion of Rose's, not the cafe. We were in a hurry to get out to Orcas last year and didn't bring goodies. As Bill E says, Rose's has everything you need. Great wine and cheese selection (well-chosen rather than huge), and a knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff. The gentleman who helped us recommended a French sparkling wine that I'd never heard of, Bugey Cerdon, that has become one of our favorites.

One of my favorite places. Great food, good selection in a rustic and comfortable atmosphere. One of the best spots in the NW. Deck in the summer (even late spring) is prefect. Stay for coffee and relax.

The best lunch on the island. Outstanding split pea soup (with lots of wonderful ham). Pretty good chicken salad, although I'm not a huge fan of almonds in it. Very nice venue, high ceilings (used to be the firehouse) - lovely outdoor patio if the weather is good. Also has a great gourmet food store attached - great selection of cheese and wine (and a very knowledgeable wine buyer).

Fantastic food in a casual setting. The menu changes based on what's local/seasonal. The pan seared halibut sandwich with heirloom tomatoes and remoulade was terrific. Even just the latte and baguette with jam for breakfast was great. They mostly do breakfast and lunch though do serve dinner, currently, Wed-Fri. Closed Sunday.
