Came here yesterday around maybe 5:30 or 6pm? So I want to say happy hour was till occurring although I don't think we ordered anything off the happy hour. Anyway with it only being Tuesday midday we had no problem being seated without reservations. We tried a bunch of appetizers which were all great. The pricing for the menu is slightly above average, but nothing too crazy. I enjoyed the crab and avocado small dish (18.50) and loved it!! the flat bread with pork belly (9.00) was also delicious. Service was great. Staff was friendly. Ordered a bottle of wine and they seem to come by frequently enough to also refill our waters.

Just had the most incredible meal in recent memory - seared halibut with shrimp & asparagus spaetzle. It was perfect. I hope to return before the menu changes.

If you're struggling to get back to your roots, try Roots Restaurant & Bar. If you can find the secret door behind it you'll find an elegant yet hip interior with plenty of table seating, window booths, and bar seating. They also have a nice looking patio, although the weather was a little too hot for me to enjoy it, it looks like a nice place to be in the evening or during cooler temps. The kitchen is exhibition style, so you know nobody is dropping your hamburger patty and yelling "five second rule." The food, let me tell you about the food here... I would give the food 10 stars out of 5, I mean, it's really fu**ing delicious! My rad bartender, Paul, recommended for me a pastrami sandwich which came with house-made and smoked pastrami, grilled onions instead of sauerkraut, and house-made mustard on rye and it was nothing short of perfection. Somebody should name their child after that sandwich, or write a book about it. And yes, I'm saying this about a pastrami sandwich. Props to the kitchen! The service here is also exceptional, at least at the bar it was which is the only place I've sat whilst eating/imbibing here. My bartender was Paul, and he really took care of me and everyone else that sat in his area. He knows how to pour drinks and will make you feel right at home. Everyone here is smiling and really seem to enjoy their work, and it shows in the delivery of the service here from the second you walk in, to the sad moment you have to leave. I would highly recommend this place to anyone in the area looking to have a pleasant lunch, dinner, business meeting, date, or just hang out at the bar and have some conversations with strangers. Roots, well done!!!!

I have given more stars for worse. The food was good, not great but good, the service was nice... But the restaurant was filthy. If there is one thing that you should be doing before you close and or open it's clean. You *could* have the best food (which you don't) or the best service (which you don't) with sticky tables and crumbs everywhere and it wouldn't make or brake the experience ... But ... Since you have neither I would urge your crew to deep clean. Needless to say we won't be back.

I had the fresh halibut fish and chips. $16 got me 3 small pieces of fish, fries and about 1/4 cup of cole slaw. The fish was mealy and mushy. That's a sign its not fresh. The batter was overpowered with a beer taste. I ate 1 of the 3 pieces. The fries were good. I took 1 taste of the"homemade" Cole slaw.. Yuck. Way overpriced for bad food. The fly in our water didn't help either.

This restaurant has a beautiful interior, a great happy hour with tasty drinks and menu items and also a great regular menu for brunch and lunch! I have been here several times and aleays impressed by the great service, food and drinks. The bar can get crowded for happy hour and the parking lot can be a bit of a challenge given it shares the lot with a ton of other businesses. Even for happy hour, it can be a bit expensive, especially given the area, however I would keep going back for the service and tasty bits!

This is absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in camas! My husband and I often get the pork chop, which is served differently each time we've gotten it, but amazing every time. Last time we had it, it was served with peaches, cream corn and crispy potatoes all seasoned to perfection. The meat is so beautifully seared and juicy. Because we love food so much (true foodies) we always share so we can enjoy every course including desert with out exploding. The wait staff is always very kind and answer any questions we have. If you think the food here is uneventful, you know nothing about food. I would much rather spend my money here than at any of the lame chain restaurants in the area

Enjoyed an excellent meal with friends at this fine dining establishment in Camas, WA. Our party of five was seated relatively early on a Tuesday night, and service was attentive, helpful and friendly. Our knowledgeable server expertly steered us through the menu and assured me that most of their dishes could be made gluten free. (I think the Portland area must be the GF capital of the USA. It's so easy for me to have safe meals here!) The blackberry mojito is a great way to start off your culinary adventure at Roots, but be sure to save room for a glass - or bottle - of the great wines available. To start off my meal, I opted for the heirloom tomato salad special - yellow, orange and red tomatoes bursting with flavor combined expertly with mozzarella, onion, basil, olive oil and aged balsamic vinegar. So simple, and yet it was my favorite dish of the evening. I can also heartily recommend the Dungeness crab and avocado salad, which offered unexpected goodness in the play of radish and vermouth vinaigrette against the crab and avocado. The rest of our party enjoyed the ribeye steak, the pork chop, and one of the evening's specials, the halibut. Dessert is not to be missed, and Roots' creme brûlée is one of the best I've eaten outside France. Bottom line - a charming and fun restaurant that excels in using seasonal ingredients at their peak of flavor. Bon appétit!

I went for happy hour with a couple friends today. I had the clams ($8, delicious, good portion).. and the habanero infused tequila cocktail-$9.. I also tried my friend's order of scallops.. everything was delicious.. definitely worth the price when you're looking for nicer quality fare!!

Great Happy Hour. The restaurant tends to be a little loud as they have concrete floors and high ceilings that take away some of the intimacy of fine dining but for SW Washington this is one of the best in the area. No need to drive to Portland, OR when in Clark County.

Meh. The menu didn't offer anything that looked drool-worthy, so I settled on the soup of the day and a Caesar salad (with anchovies, of course). Both items were a bit bland and nothing special. I would have ordered something that sounded a bit more appetizing, but the menu didn't look all that amazing. It's an OK place to eat, and apparently the nicest restaurant in Camas, but it has nothing over the establishments in the Bay Area.

We used to live in Camas and this was one of our favorite dinner spots. So when we came back to Portland area for a vacation we put it on the top of our list. We had a very disengaged waitress who kept looking around the room (for better people?) when she rattled off the specials. My wedge salad had a side of soup (so much dressing) and the lettuce was brown at the tips. Needless to say I didn't eat a bite, the waitress and busboy were not even concerned when they asked if I was "Done with my salad." Then came the overpriced entree of Rib Eye steak. Half of the slab of meat was pure fat. Again, no mention of the meal barely being touched. You hate to waste calories and money on vacation but that's exactly what happened at Roots on Sunday night. Sadly we will never return to our Roots.....

It was about 2005 when my wife said she wanted to check out Roots. I was hesitant, thinking the food would be vegetarian, tubers, roots, and total health food; but went along anyway. Roots has been our favorite local establishment since. We have never had a bad meal. We do tend to eat early, and have never had to wait. Whenever we take guests from out of town, they are pleasantly impressed with the quality and combination of locally obtained food the restaurant offers.

This must be the best restaurant in Vancouver, and it's stuck in a shopping center way out east. The decor is handsome and the service impeccable. We had wine, three small plates, and dessert for $64 plus tax and tip. All the food was outstanding: crab and avocado salad, flat bread, and onion tart. We chose tres leches for dessert. What a fine place to eat!

Delish food! Flatbread was amazing and fantastic duck with Brussel sprouts! Great atmosphere and food!

To start the roasted tomato soup was perfect! My bloody mary was good but the pickled green bean was a little tough. My entree was the steak and eggs. My steak was really good and cooked just the way I asked. My eggs were a little runny for my taste but that didn't stop me from clearing my plate. Our server was very astute. She was very sweet and welcoming. I ended my meal with the Lagavulin 16yr single malt scotch. It had a light burn with heavy wooded flavor and a slight star anise after taste. I got mine neat but I recommend getting it with an ice cube or two.

We are doing the happy hour buffet. Well that means we tried 5 dishes. Dirty rice, walla walla buttermilk onion rings, calamari, Daily mac and cheese, and house made pickles. All were great but the pickle plate blew me away. Pickeled egg 2 different beets, asparagus, turnip, gerkin pickle, bread and butter pickle, and their version of the cinnamon spiced apple. Chef Jeremy Penrod you out did yourself tonight.

We've dined here before, but only three stars were deserved for our experience on a recent special occasion. Food was excellent. Service exceptionally slow, but staff friendly nonetheless. When I called for reservations, I informed them that it was our 44th anniversary. Upon arrival, and being seated, it took nearly 10 minutes for our friendly waitress to arrive. My wife quietly said "maybe they don't care that it's our anniversary." I decided to kick start things again by asking our waitress if anyone had told her that this was a special night. Nope. Ok, I thought that now they had an opportunity to recover and make it an extra special affair. Not happening. We had enjoyed a bottle of wine and requested a second. It never came, and upon finishing our entree, the waitress asked if we still wanted a second bottle. We told her no and politely asked for our check. Be prepared for slow service if you go, and realize that during busy times it's so loud that you can't carry on a conversation --unless you Shout. I think we will "root" around for another place to celebrate the next special occasion. We deserve it! Cheers!

Roots is a good option in Camas for a nice dinner date. The atmosphere is very conducive to romance! Most things on their menu sounded great. When I was there with some friends, I ordered the duck confit, pate, and kale and pumpkin salad. The duck was crispy and tender and was accompanied by some delicious roasted vegetables. This is a good dish to share with someone else since it's pretty fatty. The kale salad was the perfect complement to the duck since the tartness of the dressing cut the fattiness of the duck. With dinner I also ordered an oregon strawberry cocktail. It was good but a little too sweet, even for me. I would get something different next time.

Just finished a meal at Roots by recommendation of one of my friends. I believe he had good intentions, but I have to tell you my experience was awful. I think you can contribute most of my bad experience to the waiter who seemed like he could care less about our meal. He had a negative attitude from the start but what took the cake was his reaction when we reminded him about a forgotten item we ordered. The food was good but not remarkable and definitely did not live up to the price. What sucks is that I really wanted to like this place. The decor wad awesome and there was much more on the menu I wanted to explore. But I can't justify paying for bad service.

  • David G.

I've only come here for happy hour drinks and food, but the burger and beverages I've had hit the spot. I recommend this establishment to my friends who are trying to miss the rush back to PDX. If anything, they should advertise their happy hour more, probably would receive more customers for the corporate types around the West Camas, East Vancouver area.

I have mixed reviews for this place. First, the restaurant had an unpleasant smell. Chemical or some type of cleaning product. This was off putting. Our server was attentive, wait times for the meal were a bit long considering the restaurant was fairly empty. We ordered the scallop dish, which was very good. Scallops were cooked properly, with a nice sear. Wedge salad was okay, nothing special. I had the risotto, which was a bit under seasoned and, frankly, it was overcooked and a bit mushy. The worst part was the onion strings on top, which were tough and a bit like trying to chew hair. They added nothing to the dish. We had one cocktail, which had a piece of plastic floating at the bottom. Our waiter immediately comped the drink. Nice customer service there. My companion had the pecan pie for dessert and said the flavor was good but it was tough. Overall, they should be making spectacular food for these prices. It's not. I wish I could say I'd go back, but probably not. I have very high expectations and nothing I ate I couldn't make myself at home. I was surprised they had so little seafood options because I would have loved to order anything but salmon. No luck.

Would go 3.5 if I could. Food is good every time we've gone there but it's a bit overpriced for what you get and the service has been hit or miss.

Went here last night by accident really.... got a prime booth in the bar area, was so nice, private and romantic!! We started with some almonds (YUMMY) and a couple drinks, I got the lemon drop, which was very good. We got the fish and chips, and the chicken dinner, both were very good! Fish was nice and flakey and not greasy...I would have guessed it was halibut, but it was cod. The chicken dinner was so good, chicken cooked so tender, garlic bacon mashed potato's were yummy...as was the broccoli (not sure if the broccoli was wrapped in bacon or if the bacon was with the potatoes as everything was served stacked on top of each other. The chicken was from a local farm, and had I been in Portland, I would have inquired on the chickens name...and asked if they had a picture :) I would (will) definitely go back!

Love this place! Always excellent drinks and food. Happy hour is the best. I live close by so the atmosphere is set up in such a way that you instantly begin to relax. Happy hour is on the pricey side but you're paying for quality. Don't let it's location deter you from coming in here! They have a lovely patio that is amazing on a sunny day!

Great hamburger. And wonderful crab appetizer. Great for a date. Nice patio outside in the sun. A bit on the spendy side if you order the crab of course.

Our favorite restaurant across the Columbia River! We stop every time we're in the neighborhood. We've never been disappointed. If you get a chance sit at the Chef's Counter. You get to see the food go by. Like most fine restaurants, the description on the menu doesn't do the food justice. Watching it go by, you'll see exactly what they mean. We love the Duck Confit, regardless of what it's served with. The desserts are great, they Pastry Chef is amazing. Salads, soups, small plates and entrees are not to be missed. Don't miss this place.

It's not often that I'll be disappointed in a service enough to torch it, but my experience at Roots was the worst I've encountered in a very long time. The service was a disparagingly lengthy and rude. It shouldn't be such a big ordeal and take 15 minutes of flagging people down, only for them to tell us that they can't take our drink orders, before the bartender finally gets to us. The drinks took about as much time to arrive as it did to attempt ordering. So by now, it's been 30 minutes and we are sipping drinks that are warm when they should not be. Not a huge deal, but enough to almost just pay and leave. However, seeing as we had drove over from Vancouver, we decided to stay for dinner. Where it only continued its downward spiral. The fries were just a glob of stringy things that tasted as if they had been microwaved. The burgers had so much salt and seasoning in them that I couldn't even finish mine and we both ended up with a lovely aftereffect of getting sick from them a few hours later. Definitely not returning for the overpriced sickness.

We live in Camas, WA and since my wife never been at Root's we decided to go there for dinner. It is Friday evening and it was crowded. We ordered drinks which did not come together. We ordered fries which we did not get it at all. The burger and scallop dish were good but the service ruined everything.

This place was just OK. Underwhelming. I had oysters, some dish I can't remember and some wine. It's pleasant overall if you want to go on a date or catch up with friends, but I wouldn't frequent it.

I was looking for a place near Vancouver where I could lose myself in a fabulous meal. I tried Roots because of how they described themselves. From the moment I was shown to the chefs counter by the hostess who stood looking at the ceiling holding the menu while I stood looking around too until I realized I was supposed to choose my stool and pull it out for myself, until I left not receiving even an eyebrow twitch of recognition by the chef or any of the cooks, I had only the meal between to judge, and that was the beet salad with grilled onions and blue cheese - all good fresh ingredients, although the grilled onion was a little under done, but the flavors were good together. The oil on the plate however was so heavy I didn't have an appetite for an entrée. The venue is very large, and I think would do well if it focuses on consistency and service. Downgrade the snob factor, make it true American dining, and treat the customers kindly. If it focuses on fun fresh food, and friendly service, that place could sing.

  • Ellen K.

The food and drinks were good but the services was the worst I have ever experienced. Our waitress was rude and in a horrible mood. I. Would not recommend sitting in the bar for just drinks again you'll be treated like you don't belong there.

Met a friend for happy hour. I had the Duck Confit and then the Halibut for dinner. The Confit and the Halibut were both amazing. I was a little dissapointed in the small piece of halibut for $27, but it tasted great. The bar was very busy and service was a little slow.

We enjoyed the bar happy hour menu. Spinach salad and the burger was great. Onion rings were a bit over salted.

Undeniably the best pacific northwest cuisine around! Friendly faces and fantastic service, dessert to die for and an unforgettable ambiance. My husband and ate dinner there Friday night for the first time and we felt welcomed and not rushed. Thank you for a wonderful evening!!! We WILL be back!!

Came here for a wine-paired dinner event from Five Star Cellars in Walla Walla. For $85 per person + tax + gratuity we had a totally awesome meal. For sure. The service was good, but it was a group of ~25-30 people. The winemaker spoke about the wine and Brad Roots spoke about the food. We started with Maine lobster salpicon, a cold dish of avocado, cucumber, tomato, lobster and paprika coulis. This was good, but I would have chosen local Dungeness crab over the lobster. It was paired well with the semillon. The next course was my favorite - russet potato gnocchi with porcini mushroom cream sauce topped with matchstick pears. This was paired with a rose of sangiovese. The gnocchi were perfect in texture. The pairing of pears with the porcini mushroom cream was truly inspired. Next came beef tenderloin topped with a deep fried oyster and melted Camembert. This was paired with Cabernet Sauvignon. Wow. This pairing was really delicious. The steak was a little overcooked but still very flavorful nonetheless. Feeling full? Too bad, because now we had the grilled lamb chop with a caponata of sundried tomatoes, raisins, and mint hollandaise with a glass of merlot. Perfectly cooked and just plain yummy. Finally, a strawberry semifreddo with cabernet gastrique and Stumptown coffee. The perfect end to a really great meal. Actually, I think a winemaker dinner like this is one of the best way to sample this restaurant. It isn't cheap, but this is one of the best meals I've had in the last year. Roots has winemaker dinners at least monthly and they have an email list you can join for information.

We've been coming here since just after they opened and I realize I've never written a review. This is our almost-weekly Go-To place. The food is always exceptional, the service is great and the ambiance perfectly fits date night. Personal favorites: rib eye (yum!), short ribs, romain with anchovies and spinach salad. Just don't sit on the left side of the chef's bar - that's our spot.

    (5)
  • Jeff M.

Food and service have been consistently good. I do agree with other reviews that the main dining area is uncomfortable and not very interesting. I enjoy sitting in the bar where there are comfortable booths and better atmosphere. Happy hour is fine. Love the salads, fish and chips, and anything duck.

I never know where to go to lunch in Vancouver, and my son suggested Roots, which I had never heard of. We went for lunch yesterday and we were pleasantly pleased. I had a burger, my son had the pastrami, and my husband had the sandwich of the day. We all thought it was good, but could have had a little more flavor. The best dish was the onion tart with gruyere cheese and pine nuts. Also very good was the wine. We got white Torii Mor Pinot Gris, which was yummy and served very cold. Overall a very good experience.

Service at dinner was gracious & fine. We ordered small plates, that were hit-and-miss. The mussles were good, but the broth was about 80% oil, & not a tasty sauce that one could sop up with their bread. This was a REAL disapointment. The flatbread had some sort of sweet-tasting concoction on it that I just found repulsive. YUK is all I could say. The good news? Onion soup was simply delicious. Duck confit was very tasty, but lacked seasoning - sigh - . The big hit of the night was dessert. Portions were fine for two and the chocolate mousse cake was amazing. The apple tart was perfectly spiced, however the apples were just a bit too crispy for my taste. Still, these were by FAR the high point. I think the pastry chef needs to have more input into what the line cooks are putting out. For what they charge, I think it's more to pay for the lavish decor, rather than the food quality. Portions could grow for what you get. Also, the menu could probably use an overhaul & the cooks get a refresher on seasoning. Close, but no banana.

Just to get it out there....Roots serves the best pan seared halibut I've ever had. Never under/over-cooked, batting 1000 with no disappointments. A limited beer menu, but there always seems something very worthy on the list. He wine menu is more varied. I typically go with the burger and a martini. It's hits he spot. The prices are slightly high but not oppressive, and the quality is great, and the vibe is easy.

  • Chris D.

The food was good, the service was polite, the atmosphere was upscale...the price was steep. So here's my dilema: what do you say about a place that provides good, fresh, regional cuisine with well executed presentation in a classy, comfortable atmosphere; but which I left feel unsatisfied and, well, let down? It was good, but not that good. It seemed like they were trying just a little too hard and taking themselves just a little too seriously...and charging for it. A good restaurant always has some basics / classics on the menu -- not here. Some of my dinner companions are more conservative eaters and they struggled to find "something normal". I personally am looking for something new and different when I go out to eat, but they have a point, and it took away from the overall enjoyment of the meal knowing they were very happy with their meal. Given all that and the price you pay for it, I didn't leave happy...or really unhappy...I had hoped it would be more of an experience, and that in the end was what was disappointing.

I come to this area of Washington quite often, and this restaurant is always on my must visit list. The food is consistently very good, and the waitstaff is always prompt, efficient and professional. Their wine selection appears to favor Northwest wineries, which is always a plus in my book. I would highly recommend this dinner house to anyone, 5 stars in my opinion.

Warrants a second visit, for sure. Took some friends for a nice posh nosh up the Friday before Christmas. Not as packed as I thought it might be. Service was friendly and efficient enough but not exactly refined, warm or wise. That's an observation, not a complaint. The complaint, and the only one I have, is that the servers, on this night anyway, were far too quick to clear our table. This is a lack of training in the finer arts...such as the art of how not to remove someone's unfinished cocktail from right under their nose without asking first. Some of us, especially us older girls with both time and money, like to linger over a good meal...so mind your manners please young man or prepare to be verbally assualted by some of my more colorful colloquialisms. The food was top notch...all of it. Exquisite Kumomoto oysters danced like tiny gems in a champagne mignonette. Wash that down with a bone dry Crater Lake martini and it almost feels as if we never lost the empire. Yep, that good. Main courses too were faultless...yes...you heard me say it...faultless. Pork chop and sides cooked just so. Risotto with squash and mushroom, creamy and flavorful. The potato gnocchi with porcini cream seduced me. I am ashamed...I burned the photos. Sorry we had no room for dessert. Maybe next time. Good job Roots. I'll be back.

Over priced, over rated, and under wheeling. OK, but not a place to visit regularly.

  • Kim H.

The service was poor and the food was hit or miss. We had the scallops as an appetizer and they were delicious. The pork chop was incredibly salty and overcooked. I waited a long time to send it back before I was able to get our server's attention and then he grabbed the plate and ran off. I asked him to come back so I could order something else (went with the scallops for a second time) and he seemed angry and frantic. The Clear Creek Pear Brandy sidecar was a nice treat and earned an extra star for this restaurant.

I visited for the first time with a few friends. The decor was great, we sat in the bar for happy hour and it was relaxing and comfortable. We tried multiple items off the bar menu and all were great. I suggest picking something outside of your normal habit. My favorites were things I wouldn't expect to like and be prepared, the menu changes often. Although the food was amazing, the service was lacking. We were helped by atleast four different people, not one waiter/waitress as you would expect. On two separate occasions the wait staff had to come back to the table to verify our order and in the end we had to flag them down everytime we needed help.

Rude staff. Got food poisoning and manager tells me that no one else complained so it wasn't their fault. No apologies. Will not throw money at them.

Went for lunch on Saturday. The cauliflower soup with crab was excellent. The kale and pumpkin salad was good but I think the vinaigrette dressing could be improved. My dining companion had the salmon plate and said it was great. I enjoyed the warm toffee cake. Our server was polite and efficient. The timing of the arrival our food was leisurely. I was impressed by the variety of NW wines on the wine list but unfortunately my schedule didn't allow for having a glass with lunch. I look forward to returning when I can enjoy the wine with the meal. I will definitely return and enjoy their lunch offerings on the weekend, and will have to plan a dinner excursion.

A favorite for happy hour- lemondrops, clams, onion tart, calamari- but the chocolate mousse dessert is outstanding. Patio is nice, also.

Very attractive setup and decor! Food is wonderful and happy hour is not bad! The burger with Blue Cheese is so tasty and never disappoints. Duck Confit is also great! My only complaint is that both times I have been, something has failed to come out, but somehow finds its way on to the bill. Of course, the waitress took those items off both times, but leads me to wonder why it happens so frequently.

  • Kenn D.

Just "OK". Food is good, but overpriced for the value. Service has been extremely slow both times I have been there. Couple of local friends experience the same thing but for some reason I just recently tried again. Took "forever" to get the first meeting from the waiter, he tried to be friendly, but it appeared fake. Again, food was good, but not for the $30-$50 price. Cosmetically the restaurant is nice, great for a date night; just a shame the service is poor and price to high.

Always really good food. If it's just two of us, I enjoy sitting at the bar in the back so we can watch the staff create their master pieces... very entertaining. Items I crave: the fresh crab and avocado salad, the duck con fit and the seasonal pumpkin fritters (heaven!) Happy hour menu is a great deal on super tasty food, with a few well priced cocktails. When it's nice out the sunny patio is a favorite happy hour location!

(After sharing this review I also spoke with a friend who told me after seeing fries served in the bar he tried to order them in the dining area but was told that wasn't possible. It's a strip mall in Camas, not a skyrise in NY!!) I had to add some detail to my original review. A few folks got their panties in a bunch so let me add a few things. On a Thursday night at about 8 pm there weren't a lot of people dining, seems to be standard for most Vancouver restaurants at that time. I ordered the Prickly Pear Margarita only to learn they were out of the Prickly I guess, so I only had the Pear Margarita. Nothing to write home about. The Walla Walla onion tart was pretty tasty and I really enjoyed the Halibut, served with potatoes done perfectly, and green beans which could have used some help. Overall it was very, very good. HOWEVER, 10:30 came around after our dinner and another round of drinks, we heard one of the staff from the kitchen say "Go the fuck home!" Since I'm pretty sure we were the only ones left, two other groups left 15 minutes before us, I could only assume they were talking to us. I thought perhaps we heard wrong but after a few minutes, someone came to our table and stood with a stupid look on his face. I had to ask if he wanted us to leave and he told us he'd appreciate it. Really? 10:30? Wow. Sure they listed their hours open until 9pm but since other people were there until 10:15ish, I didn't see the big deal with finishing the drinks they served us. Never, ever, ever, have I had someone from a restaurant ask me to leave so they could go home. I was pissed that I had already tipped my server, not that it was her fault. But it ruined my experience. Based on principal I will make sure Roots does not get another penny from me. There are too many other places to eat in the area that want my business and see the value of their customers. Especially ones who write on YELP! And if you don't like my opinion I don't really care so stop sending me messages about how you didn't like my comments. Yelp! is CONSUMER OPINIONS. Relax, if you like it eat there. Just make sure it's before 9pm.

One of the best restaurants in the Portland area. Excellent relaxed and friendly service, wonderful food, fairly extensive wine list. Love the attention to regional dishes. We were a party of 6 with a newborn and no reservations, arriving 5:30 Sunday evening. We were seated almost immediately, and the fun began. All of us enjoyed the ambiance, the time, and wow, the FOOD. really terrific. Spendy, but worth it. I'll be back.

Roots runs a pretty decent happy hour. The happy hour cocktails are a bit better than the food. But you can't go wrong with their burger. I have found more success with the lunch menu than the dinner menu. I would definitely recommend this place for a cocktail!

Simply the best restaurant in Clark County! With the unfortunate closure of Galleotti's Restaurant in Battle Ground, Roots now reigns unchallenged as the finest Clark County has to offer. It's not cheap - my wife and I spent $125 for dinner recently, including a decent bottle of wine and tip - but for a "special occasion" restaurant north of the Columbia River, this is the one. My steak was the best I've had this side of Montana or Texas and my wife's pasta was truly outstanding; the cheese plate and the walnut and goat cheese salad were all delicious, too. They make a point of using local ingredients whenever possible, so the restaurant checks all the boxes for Locavores. Their wine list is excellent, the service friendly and unobtrusive. We were so impressed that the next day we called back to make reservations for our New Year's Eve dinner with our family. Highly recommended for a truly special meal.

I've eaten here several times in the past year. It is one of the best restaurants in Portland metro which is weird given the suburban shopping strip where it's located. Happy hour is one of the best around, but I've noticed a couple of things: -the one-time best $3 onion rings you can find are now a greasy soppy mess. -the fish'n'chips suck, perhaps in deference to genuine English street food, but that sucks too and they've never fixed it I think both are a function of lousy use of their fryer. Everything else is wonderful. This is a fine dining restaurant, so if you stay away from the more populist menu items required of a suburban location and the whiners whose idea of fining dining is Applebee's, you will get what you expect at a pretty good price point: seasonal fresh to table ever-changing menu with sophisticated flavors and french inflections. The lamb is fantastic, never had a bad piece of fish (except the darn fish'n'chips) , the pork belly and diver scallops is a dream (which is balanced and not overly rich), the calamari's aioli is something I salivate for just thinking about it and the onion tart converts the skeptical. Just lose the fish and chips...

Although I've never been here for dinner in the main restaurant, a few of my friends and I stopped in for Happy Hour one night on the bar side and were impressed. Great drinks and superb food. Try the Calamari; they are cooked well and have a bombtastic sauce to accompany. I would definitely come back here with friends again, or even a date. Lots of dark booths and a romantic atmosphere.

The food and drinks were really good but on the happy hour menu they listed mussels at $11.50....they are on the regular menu at $11.50...What's happy about that? Thought happy hour was supposed to be cheaper then the regular menu.

Total gem in Camas! Roots is one good thing that Camas has going for itself. Hoping this will start a trend of good eateries in this area that badly needs quality establishments. The by the bottle wine selections are great - I love that they have solid Napa selections. Food is exceptional and so, so fresh... over 2 days amongst 4 of us we tried about 50% of the menu... ALL very good. Burgers, Calamari, Ahi, you name it - farm to table it's so very fresh. Spinach salad is SOOO good, warm chunks of bacon, shredded hard boiled egg on top and large leaf spinach. I could eat that all day. Marionberry pie dessert was amazing. If... IF it is a warm sunny day, no place better to sit outside on their great patio. Meesh was our server... she was so great and such a pro... I would have thought she was with Roots for years... I asked her how long she had worked there because she knew so much about the restaurant, the owners, and all the menu items, drinks and wines... didn't have to ask one question to anyone. She had only been there 3 days! We are from the Bay Area and the majority of great restaurants don't have happy hours, because they don't need to... Roots doesn't need to,but I guess it is a Camas/Vancouver thing. I think the serious patrons would be back again and again. I've visited the area now 3 times and have eaten here all 3 trips. We loved it so much went back the next night... same solid service, dinner and wine. Bonus we tried their other restaurant up in Vancouver on Sunday for brunch, called Lapellah...http://www.lapellah.com/ - do not miss this hot spot... you wouldn't think an ultra cool restaurant would be found in this strip mall... don't miss this... great food and amazing decor - you won't be disappointed.

Underwhelmed. It was Ok, but if your going to spend this kind of money you should just go to PDX. Service was excellent. I had pork that was so salty that it was inedible. My wife's Halibut was so tough it bounced as if inflated for the big game. It was like I'd imagine eating memory foam would be like. Fried oyster salad was very good. Leek soup was alright.

We will continue with our search to find a great restaurant in the eastern part of Clark County. Roots does not fit the bill. The service was good, if a bit aggressive about clearing away dishes. The atmosphere was fine, neither great nor bad. We ordered the mussels for an appetizer. They were acceptable, but not something I feel I would order again as the broth was a bit greasy (as mentioned in another review). I had the romaine heart salad and my husband ordered the potato soup. While my husband enjoyed the soup, the portion was small for the $10 price tag. My salad was passable, but also small for $8. I've had better at Shari's. For our entrees, I ordered the 12oz rib-eye and hubby had the halibut. I sent my rib-eye back. I've only ever sent back one other steak in my life. I ordered it medium rare, but it came out charred and well done. For a rib-eye, it was very thin, about half an inch thick. At 29.50, I expected more. My second steak was better prepared, but still very thin and it lacked flavor. Our server was very nice about my complaint regarding the steak and had the replacement out very quickly. The halibut had a nice flavorful crust, but the rest of it was bland. For $115, I wish we'd gone to Meriwether's.

Was bought a gift card to go here so I took my wife and invited along my best friend and his wife. Waitress knew my friend from school and ignored my wife and I all night. Totally understand but still a little rude. Ordered Prawns for $8 and was served 2, and I repeat, 2 Jumbo, overcooked, Shrimp. I told the waitress that I didn't like this, she asked why. "It's over cooked." I said. "Do you not like Gouda Grits?" She asked. I said I do but this was gross. She stormed away from the table with the dish. Entree of lamb shank was not very flavorful as well. Although the Mushroom Lasagna was very well made. Desserts aren't to bad. Way over charged for Service and Food. Charged us for the Prawns that I sent back. Need I say more?

I love the atmosphere! But will say a few friends and I met here for Happy Hour one day and were getting told by the waitress that she wouldnt serve us because we were too loud. Now lets just get this straight, I'm loud without alcohol, and when you do add it, well lets just say I can get louder. Over and beyound this little occasion, I still do like the place. The food is great and their Happy Hour is excellent!

We really like Roots. It's a 4.5 star visit. It has taken me a few months to post a review but our meal there was memorable. I chose to have a couple small plates, the fried calamari with a spicy dipping sauce and the crab salad. Both were so good. DH chose to have a soup and entree. I cannot remember what the soup was, but he did enjoy it. The entree was a pork sandwich and fresh vegetables. The pork was delicious, moist and flavorful. My only, not necessarily a complaint... maybe annoyance, is the delivery of food to the table. The waitress delivered both of my small plates at the same time as my husbands soup came out... and then delivered his entree a few minutes later. It wasn't a huge issue, but just odd timing. One of the small plates delivered when his soup came out and then the other small plate when his entree came would have been nice. Yeah, it's nitpicking on my part. We'll be back.

Generous pours of a wide variety of wines and all cocktails are fantastic! Seasonal menus feature mostly local ingredients and flavors are mouthwatering! I love any way they prepare halibut and salmon! The starter spinach salad is a mainstay as well. Sunday brunch is tasty too!

Roots is a bit on the classy side and has a great atmosphere. Other reviewers have said that the staff was rude or slow. I found them to be quite polite however. The food wasn't good and was very overpriced. I had a burger because I am both cheap and unrefined. I ordered it with blue cheese and coleslaw and both had very overpowering flavors. It was hard to eat for me and i typically love rich flavors like that. There were 8 of us and only the 3 that ordered the rib-eye special really enjoyed their entrée. The highlight for everyone however was desert. Everyone loved what they ordered. I had the pumpkin cheesecake and it was incredible, easily the best cheesecake I have had. I would consider going back just for that. But it would be ONLY that. Other than desert I wouldn't consider ever returning. No stars for apps and entrées but 2 just for desert.

I don't know what it is about the invisible line that divides the social culture between Oregon and Washington more than the attendants of a Middle School Dance, but I'm pretty sure the time has come to put in on the table and figure it out. Is it Camas? I know he smells kinda funny sometime... but he's much better now. Or is it PDX? Yes, she's flighty, but we all have those moments. Yet time and time again Portlanders scoff at the idea of finding a worthwhile excursion north and Vancouverites always look in disbelieve while saying "You're going all the way to Portland? Don't we have something like that out on 164th? There must be a happy medium somewhere, there's got to be. Ahha! There's Roots! No, not the brewery, or the Canadian apparel line, but a cool and northwesty yet safely suburban restaurant and bar tucked on the outskirts of Vancouver. It's a slow experience, a friendly one, but slow. Thank heavens for a well stocked bar and wine list, a brightly lit atmosphere, and room to chat with a date or with a large group. The seasonal menu offers fish and poultry dishes that locals have come to expect at restaurants like this. While there are few vegetarian options, they are more than willing to design a custom meal to suit your dietary needs. All you have to do is mention it. No worries. Unlike many other restaurants of this nature however, portions are more generous and one can only share a desert at best. Prices are moderate overall. Aside from general restaurant and bar, there's a gorgeous private dining room available for parties up to 30. Also, the powder room has the coolest jet black to white mirror/sink combo I've seen in a while. It's appropriate for well behaved children and adults alike, the atmosphere allows for business casual to formal attire. One would be fine in jeans and a blazer or totally suited up. There really are few excuses to not try this place out for yourself. Surprise, sometime there are great spaces in the weirdest places. Which means it's time for a Portland/Vancouver truce. Or a duel.

Food choices were unique to the area. Food was good, not outstanding, service was sporadic. Just get the feeling they're trying to be a little fancier then they are. I'd go back if a friend suggests it.

Went for my husband's birthday. Service was poor. Food was so-so for the price. Waiter never checked back with us and when we asked for him, he was pretty abrupt with us. Indicated to the hostess that we had concerns, they basically were smirking as we left and gave us no information about where we could express our concerns. This place is recommend by many but this was our second visit and we're not impressed.

Root's is an anomaly. You see, it sits in a small shopping complex. It neighbors a UPS Store, Starbucks and sits across from a QFC and Blockbuster. The atmosphere does not throw out, "Fashionable and classy dining". Even when you get inside, it looks more like an Ikea showroom than a typical fine dining establishment. Then you get to the staff, which thankfully is well aligned and acquainted with the needs of fine dining. They know their food, drinks and have a friendly demeanor without being condescending (no French food here). The bar staff is good, so it makes the wait more tolerable. The food takes a while to be delivered, but that's not remarkably unusual. Going to Root's and having a good time means having proper expectations. Good food, and hopefully a good wait for the good food, to be entertained by good conversation on uncomfortable but functional furniture.

Came for Sunday Brunch. Very pleased! Great food and service. Nice atmosphere. Pretty upscale for Vancouver (Camas actually, but not far from 164th). You can spend a little or a lot, its good eiither way. Definitely a repeater for me.

The best restaurant in Vancouver, bar none. Better than most in Portland. When I first saw this restaurant in the little mall way out from downtown, I figured it would be gone in a few months. Wrong. Roots has impeccable service, food that is artistic, and flavor combinations that make you think, "why haven't I ever thought of this?". Brad Root is a culinary and business genius. This is a impress your boss kind of place, date place for that really special date, or just hang out with people who know where to be.

the food was fine, good even, and i would love to become a regular at this restaurant, but for one glaring issue. the service. the rude servers and their inattentiveness are inexcusable, especially at this price range. the servers behave as though service isn't the most important thing they do. i was very disappointed, as i really want to like this place given the convenient location. i generally prefer to support local businesses, but unfortunately, the rude service is too much to put up with.

Went there for happy hour on a Thursday and it was good. The prices are a little high for a strip mall restaurant in East Vancouver (some call it Camas) but the service was good and food was good. Ordered the Hamburger which was bun heavy but the Tomato soup made up for it (excellent). All in all I would go back.

This place does not disappoint. We got lucky when we got in on a busy Friday night, they were able to seat us immediately. I think you could be prepared to wait though at any given moment. No one seemed to wait long though. We were seated in the bar, as you had your choice, and we weren't picky. Our waitress wasn't 5-star service worthy, but everyone else who came by to deliver food, fill up water, etc did a great job. The woman who brought out my sister's cheese plate even took the time to point out what all the different cheeses were and where they came from. Of course this kind of information went straight over our head, but it was still great that she did. Now onto the foods. It was absolutely delicious. The food has a Pacific-Northwest flair and takes into account whatever is seasonal. I think there is a little bit of something for every palate. I had a duck confit salad, the roasted pork loin with homemade sausage, green beans, and polenta. My sister ordered the cheese plate and the wild mushroom and sweet pea risotto. Everything was made up beautifully, but not too perfect to eat. The portions were plentiful; I was shocked to say the least. We finished off with what I have found as the biggest crme brulee I have ever eaten and vanilla ice cream sandwiched between profiteroles drizzled with chocolate sauce and fresh strawberries. Both were amazing. They were so good the older couple who sat next to us insisted on wanting to share! For all that food we ordered, it came to $78 without drinks. They did have some house infused tequilas that were seasonal that I almost wished I could have tried. It's an excellent place, but being a tad out of my budget I won't be frequenting it often.

Service has degraded over time.... When I first visited Roots in 2004, there were competent and friendly wait staff that had experience in higher end restaurants, and were knowledgeable regarding wine service and the amenities that one expects when going to a restaurant of this advertised caliber. Those folks have all moved on to other places, and seem to have been replaced by graduates from IHOP university. Poor service would be a compliment in describing what exists there today. I recently sold my home and received a gift certificate from my realtor, so decided to give them another shot.. Worse than ever... I give up..

A group went to Roots based on positive recommendations from co-workers. I found the food to be tasteless (mussels) or overly salty (halibut with spinach). The short wine list was pleasing, and dessert (key lime pie with pistachios) was tasty, but this was not enough to sell me. When the bill arrived, we were all shocked at the total price, especially given the quality of the food. Very disappointing...

If I could give more than 5 stars, I would in a heart beat. This is quite possibly the most fantastic sit-down restaurant I have ever been to, and from the first dining experience I shared here, I was blown away. The food is definitely 5 star, and the waiters and waitresses are top-notch, all of the way down to their professional attire. Dress semi-classy, or you may feel a tad out of place walking in, and leave the kids at home. This is not a kid-friendly place, but more of a wonderful date spot, or night out with great friends. The atmosphere is very high class-fancy schmancy, but the overall volume of the place can be pretty loud. People definitely don't eat and whisper at this place, so there won't be too many intimate conversations between you and your date. The food is exquisite, to say the least. Everything is dressed gourmet and well thought out. The carmalized onion tartlet may sound strange on the menu... but I crave it almost every day until we head there again. Here's the secret the next time you eat here: don't waste your time searching for an entree, ask for the one thing that isn't on the menu. My husband and I ask for "The Steak Dinner" and dream about it for weeks after. A giant steak is brought to us with mashed red garlic potatoes, veggies, and everything else you could dream of. My first reaction to this dinner was "Where's the steak sauce?" and I was so ashamed when I had that first bite. The meat literally dissolves in your mouth, and there is plenty of juice surrounding the dish to dip into if you really needed. I'm an avid enemy of eating the fat off of steak: but that's almost the best part of the meal. This steak dinner is SO incredible that vegetarians will lick the plate clean. And I NEVER order steak unless I'm here. Anyone that has anything bad to say about this restaurant's food can find their new true love in this dish, and they'll never complain again. The drinks are just as wonderful, the desserts are heavenly (without too many choices available), and the entire night is bliss when you walk out with a full belly and head to a movie, or whatever you may have planned after (just make sure you have enough to pay the bill, you get what you pay for at this one). If it helps, here is a direct link to the dinner menu, including pricing. (The Steak Dinner -not listed- is, I believe, $25) rootsrestaurantandbar.co…

This is a wonderful place on the east side to eat. My family and I had the eggs Benedict with crab. Although they are a little cheap with the hollandaise sauce, which is not oily, the flavors are wonderful. I crab is fresh, the beverages are good. It is not the least expensive, but there is good value in the food. Give it a try, it's some of the best breakfast in SW Washington.

I have some coworkers that really like this place. In the four or so times I've been, I've found the staff friendly, but found waiting for the food really, really slow. I've been for both lunch and dinner and we've never had to wait for a table (just a super long time for the food), so I didnt think it was that busy. The food is consistently nice, although not worth the money, in my opinion. If I was going to spend that much on a meal, I would go somewhere with more atmosphere. This place is decorated well, but it seems empty and soul-less. Its less than inspiring, okay food, and a frustrating wait for a meal. Not recommended.

Visited Roots for happy hour. I'm a huge fan of 'farm to table' restaurants showcasing local, fresh ingredients. That said, I understand that happy hour is not necessarily the best representation of this philosophy. The bartender took 10 minutes to greet us once we sat down. Once the food was delivered, the calamari was soggy and though the mussels were fresh, they were drowned in what appeared to be flavorless drawn butter. The chevre and olives were tasty, but its pretty hard to screw up goat cheese and olives. The bread served with both our mussels and chevre was grilled... and CHARRED. Gordon Ramsey never would have let that leave his kitchen, and neither should the chefs at Roots. It tasted charred and looked burned. Bad, Roots. I expect so much more...from your bread. Oh and the wine? Their Pinot Noir by the glass is *cough* Cloudline, for $9/glass. Come on. I get overcharging for wines by the glass but CLOUDLINE? I'm tired of restaurants wondering why they go out of business when they take shortcuts and ease up on the quality control. The highlight of the evening was the host opening the door for us as we left. This restaurant gets three stars because of the freshness of the mussels, and the 'benefit of the doubt' factor since we were only there for happy hour. Will not be going back to experience dinner, though.
