Delicious breakfast bagels! We got there right at 7am when the place opened, and the bagels were fresh out of the oven. They have a ton of options, including make-your-own sandwiches, lox, tons of different cream cheese, etc. The space itself is huge, plenty of tables. The drip coffee is nothing special, but the espresso was surprisingly good. I got an americano and it was way better than the starbucks down the street. If I went to Western, I imagine I'd come here for lunch at least a few times a week. The service was a little slow (it took 15 minutes to get our 3 bagels and coffees - not super painful, but we were in a hurry and expected it to only take 5-10 mins)

It was really funny.. I was walking by the place one day heading off to an appointment. This young guy was just hitting the sidewalk from the parking area and heading in. I asked him if it was any good. He said that he worked there but never liked bagels much before.. but that theirs were great. Based on that, I went back a few days later to find that besides the bagels.. they do a nice breakfast. I have (so far) been getting the Breakfast Special.. with is Eggs as you want them, a buttered Bagel and coffee. Absolutely a GREAT bagel, warm and covered in butter with perfectly cooked eggs.. and for the price a nice portion. I have to get back there more to eat through more of the offerings.. and take some bagels home. PS good coffee too. Service is Fast.. you order at the back corner near the menu boards.. walk up to the register to pay CASH (there is an ATM machine for us Debit centric folks). Sit down anywhere and they find you with the food.. hot and perfect. Lots of seating, very friendly staff and patrons, simple decor .. the focus is on the quality of the food.. not fancy digs.

Review update: the Bagelry replied to my original post about how much I didn't like them, and I appreciate the information and attention to customers. I still think it is uncool to require customers without cash to pay a high-surcharge ATM fee, but they donate the fees they collect to local charities, so that is good. Also, they toast bagels now. The Bagelry is A-OK.

I love it ! My friends took me here about 6ish months ago and I love it. The staff is friendly and they are busy all the time. And they have a great system for there business!!! Which is amazing! Food is priced Perfectly! I just love there bagels there AMAZING!!!

Great bagels, but come on, what's with always getting jipped on the lox cream cheese, this is always an issue!!!! Never mixed thoroughly and end up paying for a run that's half lox and half plain, not worth it!!!!

I've never had a New York bagel (one day!), but I feel like The Bagelry is the closest you can get to one in the Pacific Northwest. Just any bagel with cream cheese will only cost ya $2.30, which is very reasonable. Their bagel sandwiches are all within the realm of $5-$7, which is also reasonable. Their lox sandwich is one of the best I've ever had. They're cash only and the ATM fee teeters between $3 and $4, which is a lot-- the price of the bagel you're getting. They've been cash only for years and are probably going to keep things that way since they make so much money off their ATM fee, which goes to charity. However, I want to ask the owners- HAVE YOU HEARD OF SQUARE? Avoid those credit card surcharges and say thanks to your customers. No? Okay, I figured as much. ^this is a conversation I have with myself every time I go here. Hours are weird, but typical of a bagel place- they close at 4pm, 3pm on Sundays. Get in there early- this probably isn't a place you'll make it to on hangover time. A 12-pk of Bagelry bagels is how I let my family members know I love them. It's the nicest little gesture. This is one of the best places you'll grab lunch in Bellingham, which says a lot about Bellingham (wamp wamp).

I've loved The Bagelry for 1/2 of my life! Ever since attending WWU! Any time I'm driving through Bellingham, I make a point of stopping by for a bialy. Never had a bialy before? Well give one a try! It's a bagel that is simply baked, not boiled before being baked. The Bagelry makes the best bialys in the state!

Update! I was contacted by the business owner who clued me in that they DO have a toaster. I have been in since they got it even and after years of toastless bagels just thought I knew better than to even ask. I'll be in soon and toast it up plus update my review again if there's another star hidden in the golden nooks and crannies.

This place was an easy stop for breakfast while running errands downtown. Although it seemed like everyone who worked there was new (didn't know what was in certain drinks when I asked, wasn't sure what the different meals came with) they were still nice and as helpful as they could be with limited knowledge of the place. I got the quinoa scramble (eggs, quinoa, onion, red pepper, mushroom) it also came with a bagel of my choice on the side. I got everything bagel with jalapeño cream cheese. My boyfriend got the plain bagel with plain cream cheese (a little boring I know ;) the scramble was pretty good with lots of quinoa and red pepper. I would have liked some more veggies or flavor because quinoa sometimes doesn't have a huge flavor range. However the everything bagel with jalapeño was really yummy- you could tell the cream cheese was fresh and the jalapeños were cut and mixed in (a lot of places use canned jalapeños which is not as tasty). My boyfriend also said his cream cheese was delicious and very fresh tasting. I also ordered their "house tea" a red raspberry tea- although I couldn't get a straight answer about what was in it, it seemed like green tea to me and it was very refreshing on a hot summer day. So overall I was impressed with the quality of cream cheese but needed a little more oomph in my scramble (although for 6.19$- it was impressive for the price point) and would have liked the employees to be a little more knowledgeable about the product. My boyfriend also noted there wasn't any meat options for breakfast bagel sandwiches which he was disappointed with.

Been here a few times thought I'd give my opinion. First thing that comes to mind is the cash only business. Somebody welcome them to the 21st century please. Oh yeah I know they have an ATM, "keeps prices low", well the fee more than makes up for that. As far as the food I was pretty disappointed based on the reviews. I've had better bagels and lox from a large chain. Mediocrity all around.

I've been going to the Bagelry since I moved to Bellingham in the late 90's. It was then - and still is - pretty much the best bagel you can get in the tri-county region (if not beyond). Just walking into the place you can smell the yummy goodness of whatever they are baking that day. My favorite is the sourdough and the garlic. They don't toast their bagels, which used to bug me but now I understand why: a good bagel just doesn't need to be toasted. If you really want a warm bagel, ask for whatever's fresh out of the oven. Their cream cheese is also to-die-for, and the coffee's good too. What bugs me about the Bagelry is that they still, after all these years, are a cash-only business. While I admire their dedication to this concept, the fact is it's 2014 and the overwhelming majority of people use debit cards for most transactions. Yes, it would cost the Bagelry a small fee to process these transactions; but I do wonder how much more business they would generate if they accepted cards. (Yes, yes, I know there's a cash machine on the premises but it also charges a pretty hefty fee.) Speaking of money, their prices are pretty high. I just don't think it needs to cost that much to get a bagel with a scrambled egg and coffee. We often go elsewhere for breakfast because we can get more food for less money. But the fact is, if you want a really good bagel, there is only one place to go and that's why the Bagelry is still king in Bellingham. UPDATE! I'm pleased to report that the Bagelry is now offering TOASTED bagels, and this is worth a full star upgrade from me. Well done, Bagelry people, well done! The toasted bagel fans of the world thank you!

This is my favorite bagel ever! I moved from Bellingham over 6 years ago and this is one of the places I seriously miss! When in bham I always get and recommend the everything bagel and the salt bagel. The jalapeño cream cheese is THE BEST!! but I just tried the chocolate chip cream cheese today on a plain bagel and it was delicious too!! Love this place. Love the bagels.

Born and raised in Brooklyn with a Bagel Boy right across the street from my house. I am very picky with my bagels. I've literally taken a bite out of a bagel and spit it out. Living in Bellingham for a few months. So I came here because I've heard good things. And they weren't horrible I was able to eat it all. So they were decent which is a very high compliment from me. The bagels are smaller then I'm used to but they were good. If I'm craving a bagel again while I'm here I would come back.

I first tried their pumpernickel bagel when stopping at the co-op and grabbing lunch. I tore the bagel into bite-sized pieces and then dipped them into a house-made hummus. The latter was forgettable but the former filled my heart with joy. Good pumpernickel is a wonderful culinary treat, but excellent pumpernickel is a blessing from the heavens above. Pumpernickel in Seattle is nothing to write home about, but what The Bagelry has is something divine. We made tracks to The Bagelry so I could buy a baker's dozen. Two visual affronts come to mind when recalling my purchase. First, two mounds of flavored cream cheese in the refrigerated display case next to the bagels. I get that cream cheese is mostly fat, but those heaping mounds really drove the point home. But at least the mounds were smoothed into a pleasing ovoid shape? Second, a mannequin perched above the dining area wearing merch from The Bagelry. That mannequin looked like Dina Martina's best friend Doreen, and I don't necessarily believe that is a compliment. The bagels freeze beautifully. As I typed this review I enjoyed a toasted bagel with a wonderful crunch on the crust and a chewy center. I am already thinking about winter and making pumpernickel bagel chips for a hearty mushroom-barley soup. That is if I still have bagels left in the freezer before winter. Otherwise, yes, I will drive from Seattle to Bellingham just to buy pumpernickel bagels.

I live nearby and have been here a few times. Their bagels are good and the prices are reasonable. My favorite is going in early in the morning and getting a toasted sourdough bagel with cream cheese and a drip coffee. A 5 covers it and it is a great way to wake up in the morning. I also enjoy their lox sandwich which I have gotten once. The art on the wall adds a nice touch and I like the wide open and relatively inviting atmosphere. However, as most people have stated, cash only. Which I get. They say to keep prices low and keep the place local, but man it makes things a little challenging and it was incredibly embarrassing the first time I was there and didn't know and had to step out of line after I ordered to use their ATM. I have not met the owner or seen them, so I can't make a judgement on how good or bad they are. Overall, I have enjoyed my experiences here, but honestly its easier for me to go to woods coffee a block and a half away because they accept card and I don't always have cash. Plus the bagels they have are local too (from Lynden), and honestly... I like them better. But I haven't tried every bagel at The Bagelry.

Ive been coming here for 4 years when i first moved to Bellingham. The bagels are fine, but most of the staff have big attitudes. If you can look past their holier-than-thou interactions, then it's a decent place for fresh bagels and coffee.

We stopped in for breakfast. The bagels were great. However, the eggs and omelets were not so great (at all) and the hot chocolate was chocolate milk heated from a jug. Disappointing. If you stick to the though bagels you should be more than satisfied. They do those very well.

Not many places around for 'real' bagels. If you've only ever had bagels from a store in a plastic bag, you need to get down here! Nice crispy exterior, soft and chewy inside. I had a toasted sesame with cream cheese. Brought me back to my younger days back east. Took home a dozen, of everything, and poppy seed, and a few cinnamon raisin.

Love the bagels, love the house made cream cheese, staff are friendly and helpful, it's good filling and affordable. The one thing that I don't like, and I've been eating here for years is they really don't give you enough cream cheese on your bagel, but if you ask for extra they give you a container of it (which is then much more cream cheese than you needed) and charge you for it! All in all it's a good place to go though. Coffee is pretty blah.

I heard this place had great bagels and they don't toast them. So, I thought they must be great because any great bagel shop knows that toasting them defeats the purpose of freshness. However, to have no ham, sausage or bacon during breakfast is nuts!! I ordered a bagel with eggs and asked for ham, cheese and egg on that bagel. She looked at me and said "we dont do that for breakfast". They had a whole deli counter. That was only for lunch, she said!! They took the ham out of Belling!!

On occasion I really crave a yummy bagel sandwich and find myself going here, and I severely regret it every time. The bagels are fine, the sandwiches are fine. They aren't extraordinary, but they are good- a bagel is a bagel. The problem is that the customer service is just awful. It's so so so bad, to an absolutely ridiculous degree. Several times I have been here when it was not at all busy and found myself waiting in excess of twenty to thirty minutes for a bagel- that is after waiting five to ten minutes for any one of the 6 or 7 people standing around behind the counter to decide to help me. They are sometimes straight up rude, and they just do not care. I have not ever spent less than thirty minutes in here even just getting a bagel and cream cheese to go on a slow day. And during this time all I can think to myself is first, why did I come back here? And second, if I had gone to the grocery store, bought some bagels and some sandwich fixings, driven home and made myself this bagel, I probably could have saved myself some time, and made a better sandwich without having to look at all these scowling faces trying to avoid helping me. It is kind of nice however, that the service is so consistent in its awfulness, because I finally have stopped going. Had there been one or two good, or even ok experiences, I maybe would have kept putting up with it. Nope!

Decent coffee, and a chill place to hang out or study. It's popular too; there were a ton of people in line on a Saturday morning. They have a great selection of bagels (they might as well be named for it...) and other baked goods as well as breakfasty items. Price: pretty reasonable, but, consider yourself warned...it's cash only. In terms of tastiness levels: nothing blowing my mind in terms of the bagels and spreads, but it was fine, and a bagel was enough to hold me over til lunchtime. They're a little scatterbrained in terms of service, so it's not the fastest. But they're friendly and it's a nice spot to gather with some buds.

Most of the the negative reviews complain about service but give 3 stars because the bagels are good. But being treated like an idiot is more disappointing than having a mediocre bagel. And the subtle rudeness employed in this place is pretty epic; you'll leave wondering if you are being overly sensitive or if (could this really be the case in a friendly town?) everyone in there was actually, in fact, rude. And having decide the latter you'll feel like a dick yourself for taking such a negative slant on interactions that could probably be interpreted two ways. So this is a crazy making bagel shop. Luckily there are yelp reviews, which I didn't read before going in, and they quickly confirm that this place is rude, and it appears it stems from the core (an egotistical and pretension owner, sounds like). And then there is my wife, who grew up here, and says, "oh yeah, I forgot to warn you that they aren't very nice there." It happens that I've worked at a place like this--poor/confusing restaurant layout, a hard working and sharp staff with high quality food, an in-group of patrons who appreciate the snob attitude as they believe they are in on it--and I've seen from the other side how easy it is to slide into the habitual passive aggression and underhanded rudeness when your shitty restaurant layout and pretentious policies continually cause patrons confusion. And since I know how much real contempt employees of such establishments have for their patrons (some odd displacement of the hatred they have for their super-hip dead end jobs) I can't bear to give this place more than one star. And it's 2013; the average homeless person has a square reader and can take a debit payment.

I should have checked the reviews and saw that the place was cash only before I came, but that isn't why I'm rating this place so low. (Though in the time I was there, six different people didn't have cards. Suck it up and pay the damn fee, it's 2013). First, the good: my latte was delicious. Now the reason I'm rating them a two: 1) ordered a toasted bagel with lox and a toasted everything bagel with cream cheese. It took 15 minutes for that to come out. 2) My toasted bagels were allowed near the toaster for a few seconds but needed more time because it was basically a slightly warmed up bagel. 3) People who say you don't toast a bagel, correction: if the bagel is well made and can stand on its own, you don't toast it. These taste like ones I can get at the supermarket and hence need some toasting for any kind of flavor. 4) Lox were nothing special. Overall, I try not to hold a bagel to Montreal standards but this place was just not that great on any level.

Good bagels but slow and non-dependable service. One time they forgot our order and we waited 20 minutes for 2 bagels and today the cashier was wearing a pink cheetah print bra visible in her uniform. Pretty gross.

They have a toaster now, so people can stop complaining about not being able to toast their bagel. I never minded the no-toasting, the bagels were fresh so with cream cheese they were tasty. Similar to other bagel shops, it's over priced, but the bagels and sandwiches are yummy. Cash only, hopefully they change that soon. They recently did a renovation, which doesn't really make sense to me. People have to order their bagel first, the person writes down what they're getting and gives them a receipt, which you bring to the cashier. That's how it's always been, but they renovated the space so now you have to go to the back of the bagel shop to order, and then come back to the front to pay... people new to the place get confused and everyone is just walking into each other. Poor planning on their part. They need to put in a blinking neon sign in the back that says "Order back here!" and then a sign above the cashier that says "Don't order here, go to the back!"

I should of went with the farmers omlette. I opted for the special of the week, "Italian" and it was not very good. It was filled with cream cheese and roasted peppers. It was too rich and the bagel did not come with cream cheese. I should of read what I was ordering first. I figured an Italian would have sausage in it. Bad start to my day but I like to support local as I went to school here and am here on business. It's also cash so I had to spend an extra $1.90 at the ATM. Who does not accept cards these days? I will return but stick to what I know. Bellingham is a great city but these types of Italian Omelets should be outlawed haha!

The staff is always incredibly friendly. They're never too busy, and today the Turkey and Havarti(recommended by the gentleman behind the counter) on a Pumpkin bagel was very tastey. Great place for breakfast or lunch, I will definitely be returning. Its just a shame this place doesn't stay open later.

The bagels are good, but the line for them is very confusing. You're given a ticket, wait in line, and then step out of line to wait for your bagel; plus there are so many counters that I wasn't sure where to go at first. I'll go again because they price fairly and I look forward to trying their bagel sandwiches.

I wasn't really expecting a great bagel in Bellingham, and I wasn't disappointed. Both too chewy and too bready, the bagels are...meh. I ordered the breakfast special - a bagel, two eggs, and a small coffee. It's listed at $4.90. I added cheese. My total came to just over $7. That's right. Seven dollars. For the breakfast special. Call me crazy, but I expect a special to be one of the most affordably priced menu items. And then it took 15 minutes to come out of the kitchen. The name should probably be changed to the breakfast slow and expensive.

I haven't been here in years, but in my college days I would stop every so often. They have a great variety of nummy spreads and the bagels are decent, but I've had better many other places. Like others, I never really understood the"no toasting" house rule. Very strange business practice to not accommodate the reasonable request of so many customers. I hear they have one now....that only took, what, a couple decades? Maybe in another decade or so they will decide to take credit cards.

Having a family member with an egg allergy can make breakfast out a challenge. Their eggless scramble is really very yummy and a decent serving at a fair price. We both had that and a mocha (mine was soy his was regular) and left full and happy! I wish I'd noticed that they are a cash/local check only establishment prior to going, as they don't have any signage, but luckily I had the checkbook with me. There is also an ATM inside, but I don't know what the fee is.

I don't think I'll ever understand why the Bagelry is so incredibly popular. It's not bad, but they're really just selling overpriced bagels that they refuse to toast. The food's fine, but really overall not that fantastic, especially considering the price. I ate here many times through college, and a few times after college, most recently less than one year ago. Still not that great!

The food is fine -- some of it is even quite good. I enjoy the breakfast omelets, and the biali with Italian spread is pretty tasty. The sandwiches aren't bad. My husband is in love with their pasta salad. I could take it or leave it. The bagels are pretty lackluster. The prices are kinda high for what you get, especially if you want to add cheese to a sandwich. A dollar fifty-ish for cheese on a five-dollar or six-dollar sandwich is pretty ridiculous. They also refuse to toast the bagels. And they're a cash-only place. They do have a cash machine inside, but you'll get charged the usual fees for using it. A place their size being cash-only is an outdated pain in the a**. That's not to mention the fact that almost every time we've ever gone there, the servers have been either pretty rude or pretty inept. I know others have had some bad experiences too, in that regard. On the whole, I don't think going here is worth it. There are better places to go for the money, and I don't want to reward this place with my business.

I just moved back after being in Seattle for the last three years and I was completely dissapointed by the Bagelry. I LOVED the Bagelry when I was in college at Western and I used to go there multiple times a week. I always knew that they weren't cheap, but I just went last week and because I am dairy free I wanted to get a bagel and humus. This costs ~$4.65. I was astonished! Then the girl working suggested that I get it with the veggies because it is only $0.95 more. Then I asked her how much a bagel and cream cheese cost, and it was ~$3.10. In the future, I think I will get just a bagel with butter on it OR a cup of soup. Their soups are always so incredible and for ~$3.50 it is reasonably prices. I hate giving it a bad review, but it seems as if the pricing needs to be restructured... and it if cannot be restructured with the current business model, maybe the business model needs to be revamped. Sorry, Bagelry. Unfortunately, I am leaving our relationship unsatisfied and you no have one less customer.

Bellingham is my adopted 2nd home. Whenever I'm in town I have to get my Bagelry fix. In fact, this last trip I ate there each morning. The bagels are really fresh and taste like actual bagels rather than just bread. All the people that work there are nice and the service is fast. It's cash only folks. The breakfast special is an amazing deal. I will miss this charming bagel spot until I return. Their coffee is pretty good too.

Ok locals, get ready to cover your eyes because this east coast NY'er is about to tell you something about what a REAL bagel should taste like. #1 - we like to have the option of toasting our bagels - no toasting?! You serious?? #2: The chewiness - eh...a bit lacking. #3: Veggie cream cheese - you should call it, "Broccoli cream cheese!" I went here because someone had brought me the most delicious bagel one time, and I mistakenly thought it was from the Bagelry. I had come on and read the reviews and was so torn between my desire not to patronize a company with a rude owner, and my desire to taste that deliciousness again. My craving won out, so to the Bagelry went I. I knew from reading the reviews that it was cash-only, so I brought $10. When I went to order, I placed an order for all the flavor of bagels I wanted (they didn't have the one I went for, only now it was too late for me to go somewhere else), and then I went to order cream cheese. I calculated how much I had left to spend after the bagel order, and decided on the size I could afford. The air-headed girl taking my order tried to upsell me, telling me how much more I would get in the bigger container. And I said "well that may be true, but I have to pay cash, so I'll go with the smaller one." With vacant eyes and a condescending voice, she says "You have to pay cash either way." So with all the patience I could muster, I slowly reply "But I only have so much cash on me..." duh. I mean, how many people really carry around cash anymore anyway? Doesn't take much common sense to deduce why I truly *have* to stick to a budget in a cash-only place. Anyway, the bagels were fine, just ho-hum. Nothing to get excited about. The cream cheese was good, and I thought a good price. And for the record, the smaller container I bought was more than enough anyway. Later that day, I inquired of the person who'd brought me the other delicious bagel, and he said he got it at Grace Cafe. I'm telling you, go there! Their jalapeno bagels are to-die for! I highly recommend them. Yum. Mouth watering now. Gotta go!

Ok, so much has improved since last fall! Maybe the new kids are broken in, or the crappy ones have left, or maybe the owner read some reviews and runs a tighter ship now. It's not what I remember teething on as a child, but hey... what is? The bagels are better and fresher lately, they're a little less skimpy with the cream cheese, and the register folks are much more efficient and friendly. The one downside is, if you order anything other than a bagel with an schmear, expect to wait. And wait. And wait some more. Even for a cheese sandwich (I like the muenster one!). Ohhh well. Can't argue with the prices or the taste. I will ALWAYS hate that damn mural, though.

Those are some seriously good bagels and cream cheese. The bagel shop trend has all but died in Vancouver, where I'm from, so this place is a destination when we visit Bellingham. We buy this crack by the bagful and gobble it down before it goes stale. The Bagelry's bonus is equally good coffee. And friendly service, a rare and precious gift. "Ehhh, no bagel, no bagel, no bagel!" Sorry, I was moved.

Pros: -The bagels are fine. Honestly, that's it. I don't understand the excitement about them. -The location is fine. I like downtown Bellingham. Cons: -The service... meh. The few times I've been there, the servers - while always kind - get freaked out by a line. I want to say, "Folks, don't panic. We're all fine," but they do anyway. -I'd heard rumors the owner was a jerk, and then I got to experience it! The tale: Two pals and I strolled into the Bagelry for a treat. Two of us tried to order a drink, but the employee (a newbie, I believe) wasn't sure how to make them. The folks training him were in panic "don't pay attention to anything but slicing this bagel" mode and didn't/couldn't take the time to teach him. "No biggie," I thought, "I'll get my food and grab the drink somewhere else." So, friends and I get a table outside, and then two of us head four doors down to get a drink where they know how to steam milk. We tip, grab our drinks, and head back to where our friend was bagel-sitting for us. After about ten minutes of eating, sipping, and recounting the previous night's adventures, a middle-aged dude walks and out says (in the tone of a sassy 19-year-old), "Could you not do that?" We look at each other confused. "Move the chair to this table? Sorry...." we venture. "No, bring other drinks here. We serve great coffee." he responded. Grumpy Gills like whoa. "Oh, sorry! We actually tried to order them here, but the guy didn't know how to make a latte," my friend answered with her special-ed teacher patience. "Come on, we know how to make drinks." Seriously! He said that! He didn't respect that the customer is always right! And then he continued with his jackassery for a moment and went back inside, only to chew out another customer for walking in with a Starbucks Frappuccino. (Bagelry, do you even make those? Why The Face?) In sum, the food is fine until it's topped with a schmear of d'bag. I've heard nothing but negative things about the owner from all who have worked with/for him, and I have no problem boycotting them just to cut his profits a teensy weensy bit. Their food is live withoutable, as is their negativity.

It's. a. bagel. Haggen, Grace Cafe (great place and people), and so many other places sell them. But all of those other places will happily take my credit card. If I want to buy my office a bunch of bagels and cream cheese from the Bagelry, I'm expected to bring in $80 in cash. Please don't tell me to use that rip-off cash machine. When you join the 21st century and accept my credit card, I'll gladly go...until then, i'll happily get my round puffy bread elsewhere. What is it with local Bellingham businesses and their "greater than thou" mentality?

This the best place to grab bagels by far. I'm in love with their regular blueberry bagel with strawberry cream cheese. For lunch, i used to get the chicken bagel sandwiches. It can get busy but I don't mind waiting in line. Their service is pretty quick. Now that I live down south, I always try to buy a couple of bags whenever I visit the Ham!

As someone who devoted 7 years of my life to the East Coast (learning where all the good Jewish bakeries were and more importantly where the best bagels, bialies and challah are), I cannot even begin to impart on you how hard it is to find a good bagel let alone a good bialy on the West Coast (hell, even finding a bialy in the first place is impossible) Well, low and behold, a trip to Bellingham, a jaunt for breakfast goodness and I stumbled on the treasure trove of oniony, poppy-seeded doughy goodness....otherwise known as a bialy. I subsequently bought what remaining ones they had and savoured every last bite. And they were just as good and fresh as the ones back in New York. I would definately go back for sure.

Honestly, my favorite item from The Bagelry is their spreads. I go in there just for the spreads alone. The bagels are nothing to write home about. Sorry, I've had better. Service is consistently good which I find very important. Prices are ok, slightly overpriced... profits are definitely not used to pay their employees or on cleaning supplies because it's pretty dirty in there. The Bagelry is busy during the lunch rush but they are always well-staffed that the line moves at a steady pace. They have a convenient ATM for those losers who can't pay cash for a bagel and spread. You know, I would give four stars except there is just no wow factor and the star of the show, the bagel, isn't truly as fantastic as some people say (they all probably grew up in this town).

Bagels are a food group, right? You'd think so from the people at the Bagelry. There is nothing... absolutely nothing like getting a dozen bagels in a bag, and eating one on the way home. So good. Their sandwiches are excellent. All varieties available, including those you make up yourselves. From breakfast to late afternoon, they are there for you. The line for ordering and order delivery is confusing only the first time. They have bits of halva, and other desserts if you are so inclined. If I had lived closer, I would have walked there every day. Fortunately, I lived in Fairhaven so it took a bit of a drive to get there. Of course, one could forgo the dessert and go next door to Mallard's Ice Cream shop. Now talk about delicious -- and inventive. But that's another review! They even take special orders such as whole wheat sesame by the dozen if you order a day ahead. Make it a regular stop when you're in town.

Forget the "nothing compares to a NY bagel" nonsense... I've grown up on NJ bagels, and had NY bagels during my later years on the east coast. Yes they were always excellent, but that shouldn't take away from experiencing the west coasts bagels. These were what they are and should be, a bread product boiled, baked, covered with toppings and slathered in cream cheese. Now tell me who has the right to judge the beauty of that? Besides the small size of the bagel, (which I'm definitely not used to coming from the east coast) it served its purpose, and satisfied my craving. The only downside about this place is that it is cash only, however they have an ATM inside the store if you happen to forget.

The Bagelry is one of my favorite lunch spots in Bellingham. I would always grab a tuna salad on garlic. It comes with a pickle and baby bag of chips, and it's was always enough for me to spread out for two meals unless I was absolutely starving. It's always pretty crowded but it adds to the fun atmosphere, and the staff is always really quick. The food is definitely worthy of five stars, but I grabbed an iced mocha and it was actually the worst coffee drink I have ever gotten anywhere. Also, I always forget that they don't accept cards and have had to grab food somewhere else if I was in a hurry.

OK, short and sweet: Had bagels in NY and NJ, these are as good or better. Certainly the best I've had within 1500 miles. Re: Less than stellar reviews folks gave. 1. Yep, the sandwiches are not the cheapest for the size, not really overpriced either though. I find the meats and such to be good quality. Given the massive crowds getting sandwiches, charging less would cause the line to go out the door more often, people getting cold and wet. 2. Toasting... While it could be a "real bagels should not be toasted" thing, I suspect that the problem is that when it gets busy there is no way to speed up the toasting process. Thus, same as above, line going out the door = bad. As it is, even with a long line, it moves pretty quick. My only real complaint is that they don't have whitefish salad. Or whitefish for that matter. For the uninitiated: Whitefish salad is kind of like tuna salad, made without celery and with a rather pickled flavor. All over the place on the east coast. A manufacture in Federal Way WA used to make it (Samolux?) and it was sold on the east coast. Can't find it on this coast at all.

My friend was very pleased that they had bialy and bought what they had left to go as he hadn't had good Bialy since living on the east coast! We would go back!

Incredible bagels, fairly priced, i HIGHLY reccomend getting the wheat bagel with cream cheese - super cheap and basically the best wheat bagel you will ever taste in your life. Awesome staff, they are usually super nice, I usually don't get the sandwiches as they get pricy and don't fill up my stomach but if you aren't starving - they are delicious. My only sticks is that they close way too early and make sure to have cash. Sometimes the quality goes poor when you grab something right before closing but its a bakery, oh well. Bellingham rocks it great for lunch with Avenue and the Bagelry, you really can't go wrong.

Bagels --- seemingly so simple, yet so easy to mess up. The Bagelry has it down, each round gem comes to you shiny, with the perfect balance of toastiness and chew. Mmm. Favorites are pumpernickel and Everything, which avoids the too-salty pitfall of many everything-style-bagels. If I didn't live close to 2,000 miles away, I'd be here way too often. But since I do, a couple $5 breakfast specials (heartily buttered bagel, scrambled eggs, good dark coffee) a year will have to do the trick.

I love the charm of this place. The servers are super friendly and it just feels like there have been some good times had here. One of the friends we came here with ate here since he was a wee lad, and said not much has changed (in a good way.) If aint broke don't fix it. But yes, one thing we might agree upon as being 'broke' is that they only accept check or cash. I was going to buy six Bialy's, but instead only bought one because of the cash factor. The bialy's are delicious, the difference between it and a rego bagel is there's no hole, But there is almost a hole, it's just poppy seeds and onion and so forth baked (like the thickness of a sheet of paper) where the hole of the bagel usually is. Also, Bialy's have less sugar and salt, and are not boiled. I love them. I had their vegan soup, it was north African something or other, not my cup of tea...or soup.

Love this place. Ken the owner hires students from WWU and WCC and treats them well. (I actually hired one of them away from him years ago - Denise was that amazing) He is fiercely local/loyal - so don't bring in your starbucks or bring in a giant ego - you won't be appreciated in our city of subdued excitement. Cash or local checks only - credit cards cost too much to process (and raise prices). The food is quite good - you can tell by all the locals coming in and enjoying. Come early in the day if you want a warm bagel - they don't toast them at the Bagelry (it's somewhat of a religious issue). A warm buttered Sesame Seed bagel is nirvana - love them! My dream breakfast is a farmer's omelette (they'll warn you because it'll take awhile to get to you but it's amazing) with the above sesame or a bialy (slight extra charge for the bialy). Combine it with a great cup of coffee and you won't be sorry you stopped in. Family friendly, student friendly, music on weekends (outside). If you come early enough, you don't have to feed the cities meter...

I'm going to venture to say that if I hadn't opted to slather my whole wheat bagel in peanut butter that I would have been able to discern the quality of the bagel better, but all in all, great breakfast! Agreed, a good bagel doesn't need to be crisp & toasted, just baked to prefection. We got our schmears and a NYT and thoroughly enjoyed being among the locals for what appears to be a town fave. Good coffee to chase it and all is well. I'd try again anytime, which will be soon, since I have a crush on sweet & charming Bellingham now. IF you are lucky, you'll see the old truck outside with four gorgeous dogs in the back, loyally awaiting their owner.

Their bagels are excellent. They also offer good quality deli meats and cheese. I bought some to put in the fridge at work to make sandwhiches for the week. The only reason they don't get 5 stars is becuase they don't take plastic. Cash only. That's also the only reason they don't get much business from me, I very rarely carry cash. Despite the odd hippie smells permeating this place (but hey this is Bellingham), The Bagelry is a deliciously satisfying lunch option in the area. I was sold the second I saw the Boar's Head truck pull up to this place. If there is one thing I'm always on the lookout for, Its Brooklyn's finest cured meats. They serve 13 varieties of bagels and an assortment of homemade flavored cream cheeses. The highlight of course is the bagel sandwiches. I've tried both the Pastrami on an onion bagel, and Turkey on a whole wheat bagel. Both were perfectly toasted and topped generously with high quality meat, veggies, and cheeses. For the price (about 7 bucks with cheese) they are a bit small, but hey we all need to eat smaller meals anyways so I wasn't disappointed.

Nom nom nom... I do love me some bagels! I used to get lox, plain bagel and cream cheese with red onions and tomatoes all the time growing up at Noah's in seattle. So when I got up to bham and found their local bagel hangout i was in there in a heartbeat. I ordered exactly what I stated above and I got lox cream cheese on a bagel with a few cherry tomatoes on the side and a couple of slices of onion. I went back to the counter and told them they made a mstake, They apologized and remade it but grumbled bout the price diference so i paid the diference. Other than that the bagels were AWESOME!!! they were good, yummy and tasty,,, chewey and a touch crispy. The extras (ie lox, cream cheese, onions and tomatoes) were always a little less than amazing but descent. People were generally helpful but got a bit confused at times with my orders. The seats were uncomfortable but bareable for a while. its worth it when you get a true bagel craving.

Much like Matt M. I grew up eating bagels from this establishment. I use to buy them by the bag full and eat them through the week. As a starving college student it made for a cheap and delicious meal. Last time I was here it looked like they doubled the size of the store and had two lines, one for just bagels and one for dinning in the store. That seemed to have spend the line up which is a welcome change from the past where you could sometimes wait 15 minutes to get your order taken. A great crowd also frequents this place with a mixture of high school and college student, downtown workers and out of work alcoholics that seem to gravitate towards Railroad Ave. It makes for great people watching opportunities.

Hands down some of the best bagels you'll find anywhere. New York included. Their bagels are the best. The scene at the Bagelry is "classic Bellingham". It's an organic, laid back place with people from all walks of life lined up for a bagel. All are welcome. The breakfast special is da bomb. I take mine eggs over medium with a poppy seed bagel. Nice. Like bagels? Go here. They also make Bialys here. Finding Bialys outside of Manhattan is quite rare. These guys make real good ones. Most bagels you get elsewhere these days are huge, fat, puffy flavorless rolls with no soul. The Bagelry bagels are dense, satisfyingly chewy and wonderfully flavorful. They have a large number of spreads to put on, all made in house. Yup they make their own cream cheese. Now let's get this whole "But they don't have a toaster" crap out of the way. Think about it for a second. These guys do nothing but make and sell bagels. They even make bialys, something most people have never even heard of. It's a big shop churning out tons of bagels. No other bagel shop can survive in Bellingham very long because the Bagelry is so awesome. If they WANTED to toast your bagel they'd have a toaster. But they don't. Given all that you should conclude that they don't have a toaster for a reason and that reason is a good one. The reason is simple, their bagels are perfect. By definition doing anything more to them would make them no longer perfect. You can't make something perfect more perfect. They make bagels all day and no matter when you walk in there the bagel is going to be fresh and chewy just like a bagel should be. I'm a firm believer that the customer is not always right and I love it when an establishment has the balls to give the customer what they need rather than what they want. The Bagelry gives you exactly what you need: perfectly warm, tasty, chewy bagels.

Incredibly tasty, fresh bagels, and they make yummy sandwiches from them, or omelettes to go with. Food is cheap and service is quick. Only downsides are that they don't take cards, so bring cash, and they don't toast the bagels for you, so I usually just ask for whatever came out most recently. (Fortunately that's often the Everything bagel, which is my favorite, and usually they're still somewhat warm.) Oh, and if you like pickles, their pickles are way better than the bag of chips - I always ask them to sub an extra pickle and skip the chips.

I was wrong. And folks, there is a reason they don't toast their bagels- it would ruin it! These aren't the kind of crappy store-bought bagels you would want to put in a toaster- as someone said earlier- they are simply perfect and doing anything to them would ruin that. I can't comment on cost because I got my bagel with a coupon good for a free one. The Baglery is hands down, the best place in town to get your bagel fix. The bagels are fresh, the service is great, and the prices are just right. I'm a sucker for some good Lox and cream cheese and the Bagelry doesn't disappoint. Get it with some chips and a soda and it's the prefect meal deal. Located downtown, it's within walking distance to just about everything, so you can grab your lunch and spend the afternoon cruising around town. A standard on my "Best of the B-Hamptons" list, stop by the bagelry for a great casual breakfast or lunch experience. One note, bring cash, as they don't except debit/credit cards.

My personal favorite is the Sesame Bagel with the lowfat Italian cream cheese, w/ tomatoes and sprouts! Living two states away from this bagel heaven is something I lament more than once a week. Alas, "House of Bagels," a shop recently opened in my town, provides a pitiful excuse for a bagel in comparison to a Bagelry bagel. No where else can I whole heartedly enjoy the unique flavor of a perfectly shaped and cooked bagel. The sesame seed, a staple in most bagel-selling locations, is made different by a flavor (I'm not talking about the flavors that come from a compromising secret ingredient) that accentuates the toasted seeds like no other bagel has come near to accomplishing. Toasting a Bagelry bagel would ruin it, and the staff have eliminated this atrocity by expelling toasters from their humble store. Rightly so for another reason as well--Bagelry bagels are always warm and fresh, never reheated or floundering in a suspicious chill. They're too popular to sit around long enough to reach room temperature. The Bagelry is made even better by its thorough consistency. Unlike most bagel places that try out "special edition" bagels with various cheese or tomato concoctions, the Bagelry keeps things simple. Each bagel they make is a staple and all are equally good (which is detrimental to decisions at the cash register). They may have breakfasts and sandwiches, but the inescapable truth of the matter is that a good ole bagel can thrust anyone into a state of euphoria. Their variety of cream cheeses (homemade of course) only add to their grandeur and deliciousness. Everyone knows that man can't live on bread alone--eating a Bagelry bagel is only made better by the atmosphere! The waiters and waitresses are sharp, on their toes, keeping things moving. Logically so because the Bagelry's popularity keeps a steady stream of people parading through the restaurant. The Bagelry has skewed itself towards the green side of the spectrum and while the clientele show this anyone and everyone flocks to get a mouth watering bagel. For those visiting the city or living in it, there is always an abundance of great events to head too on their events-only bulletin board. The people watching is also on the great side too. At the end of my long (and wonderful) vacation in Bellingham, WA, I am forced to depart from my beloved Bagelry. Yet the Bagelry is still often on the forefront of my mind. Even in May, long after my WA visit, I will mourn the lack of the Bagelry in my home town. That alone screams that Bagelry bagels are the best--and of course they are.

I grew up eating bagelry bagels and assumed that this was the way that all bagels tasted (besides the store bought crap, of course). Then I moved to Seattle for college and San Francisco for work and I have yet to find a bagel place that compares. I even tried a few bagel places on my recent trip to NYC and I have to say that I like bagelry bagels better. My favorite bagel that they offer is not technically a bagel but actually a bialy, a close cousin to the bagel that is not boiled. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bi…

A very fun place to go for a midday snack. This bakery has just about every kind of bagel and cream cheese known to man! They also make very good egg sandwiches and have salads and juices to choose from. It's not expensive but not cheap, a great way to experience a traditionally-Bellingham bakery.
