Went back to Taco Lobo for the first time in several months, and was disappointed. Ordered some chorizo tacos, and the chorizo was...well...not chorizo! It was basically ground pork, with zero seasoning/spice. Not sure if it was an off day, but it was definitely not as good as the times I went there over the past almost two years. The guacamole is still horrendous (but the other sauces are great).

I eat here regularly and mostly get the most excellent chili rellenos with fresh, moist corn tortillas! My fav drink is the fruity Tamarindo. Try it - you'll like it. The prices are good and the staff are friendly. Salsa bar is also a very cool and tasty feature of this unique place.

PLEASE NOTE: NOT VEGAN FRIENDLY. Not even vegetarian. The rice is made with chicken broth and the beans have lard. Taco Lobo is okay. I really like the flautas, the tamales are pretty good. Had a torta recently and it was not as good as in the past -- the filling (I got carnitas) was skimpy and the dry bread overpowered it. I used to like the guacamole sauce -- it was a ranch dressing kind of consistency -- but on this most recent visit it was clearly watered down and runny. Overall I'd say the most of the food is salty, bland, and overpriced.

Great little place with killer authentic food. My wife and I split a burrito with beans and rice because we weren't crazy hungry. The salsa's were great however I could have gone for one that was a little more mild as they all had some kick. If we are back in the area I wouldn't hesitate to go back. The atmosphere was casual and I liked the outdoor seating option but with my little boy decided to stay inside. Highly recommend.

I tried today for the first time....amazing, my new fav! Very homemade, even the tortillas ! Very friendly , great service! Thank you!

How I heard of this place: This establishment has been in Bellingham for about as long as I can remember. It wasn't until a good friend of mine moved to Bellingham to work at the Attorney General's office that I had the opportunity to sample its fare. Type of cuisine: "Made-from-scratch sauces, tamales and tortillas (watch them being rolled out in the kitchen), surrounded by lively art and big picture window views that look out into the heart of downtown makes the Taco Lobo a great place for a quick lunch or dinner. The spicy chicken in the pollo asado is a winner with diners, as is the tasty salsa bar, full of homemade salsa combinations. The food is always fresh, the atmosphere always fun. Come down and enjoy an authentic taste of Mexico! Taco Lobo is now proud to serve Kangen Water! We are proud to be the first restaurant in Bellingham to have our own machine installed and available to our clientele. Come in and enjoy our Salsa bar! A variety of fresh ingredients, flavors and spices free with any lunch or dinner purchase. Thirsty? Taco Lobo has expanded our bar to include a variety of mixed drinks, beer and signature cocktails. Be sure and check out our menu for what's new! Don't forget to grab a basket of hot, crunchy tortilla chips while you wait for your order to arrive. Made fresh daily, you can pair them with one of our salsas, a dollop of fresh guacamole, or enjoy them just as they are! Complimentary when you order any lunch or dinner item." Ambiance: "Taco Lobo opened its doors on April 13, 1999 in historic downtown Bellingham. Luis Santos, owner, transformed the former clothing and tanning salons into a vibrant, fun, colorful atmosphere, brimming with authentic art, lively music and festive decor. "It's more like mama's cooking", says Santos, who reveals that the Chicken Taco is among his favorite dishes. The tortillas are made on the premises, and Santos and the entire Lobo staff prepare all of the salsas for the Salsa Bar daily. Luis Santos is formerly from Jalisco, Mexico and has lived on and off in Bellingham since 1990. A commercial fishing accident forced him out of the fishing industry, but he turned the negative situation into a positive one, investing money into his first restaurant. While Luis was nervous for the first few weeks, both he and the staff settled right into the local community. Come in and see for yourself why Taco Lobo was voted best Mexican restaurant 5 years in a row!" What I ordered: Our long-time, good friend was meeting my husband and I for lunch and offered us a handful of suggestions of his all-time favorites at Taco Lobo. He was in the mood for the Burrito al Pastor ($6.95), a burrito of pork with pineapple served a la carte. My husband selected the number four: Enchilada ($8.95) with chicken, cheese, sour cream, lettuce and tomato, served alongside rice, beans and tortilla chips. Knowing that we would be sharing the chips & salsa, I opted for two tacos a la carte ($2.50 each): the Pollo Verde (chicken in green sauce) and Pollo Asado (grilled chicken). We also enjoyed two large glasses of Horchata, a rice drink with cinnamon ($1.75 each). What I loved: Pollo Verde! Why I loved it: A colorful space bright with vibrant paint and joyful energy, serving simple, yet delicious food quickly and with homemade flavor. Cost: Low to average ($5.95 - $9.95 per lunch item)

Taco Lobo is a cozy authentic Mexican restaurant situated in the heart of downtown Bellingham, WA. After being out of state for 5 yrs, I decided to visit my favorite Mexican restaurant in Bellingham. My daughter and I went here on 11/5/2014. It is one of my top yummers restaurants. I always order chile relleno here. Although, all their dishes are delicious. Their chile relleno is prepared as a soup and served with spanish rice and beans and it's by far the most unique and best chile relleno I've ever tasted. They offer tortilla chips and a salsa bar with a wide variety of salsas including salsa verde, pico de gallo, gaucamole, and more. Portions are appropriate and filling. You order at the counter and they bring your order out to you. The service is very pleasant. The only complaint I would have about this place is that the bathrooms are directly across from the ordering counter. Too close for comfort. But all in all, this place is a great place to enjoy authentic Mexican food in Bellingham.

Very clean restaurant, friendly staff that answered questions we had about the menu. The salsa bar is amazing! Fresh salsa made daily and in different flavors and heat. You order at the counter but they bring the food to your table. Good variety of meats to chose from for your entree. The chips are made fresh right here too and are very yummy! The burritos are huge and the nachos are plentiful. Everything tastes very authentic.

  • Josh W.

Service was fine. Salsas were fine. The tacos were terrible. Couldnt be less authentic. Thick small flour like tortillas, meat was soggy and soft, and it was covered in cabbage. Not what I was expecting. Oh yeah and their guacamole was literally bright green liquid. Never seen anything like it. Idk how it could be called gaucamole.

I am visiting Bellingham for the week and was very disappointed with the quality of the food here. My boyfriend and I both ordered fish tacos and by the time we received our food the tacos, rice, and beans were all cold. Nothing had flavor, everything was bland. And the spicy sauce is not actually spicy at all. Do not recommend this place.

Way over priced but really yummy carne asada burrito. Their salsa bar is fantastic! Don't understand why beans n rice come on the side of a burrito, though...

I absolutely love this place. Everything is made fresh even the tortillas which are made from scratch. The service is awesome and the food tastes great. Love it!

One of my Bellingham fav's for Mexican. Great for lunch or dinner, I typically always order the same thing - because I don't like change?? or because I love their carnita's? Staff are friendly and this popular place is very popular with locals and visitors.

So glad to find this place on Yelp! Coming from Cali i might be a little tough on Mexi food with all the Competition. The 411: This place had everything one would need to fulfill that Mexi food experience. Healthy bonus: They have Vegetarian Burritos which are quite tasty! I'm used to getting Rice & Cheese Burrito & calling it a day. This place has plenty of things to go w/ the Veggie Burrito: Potatoes, Carrots, rice & I believe white beans. We ordered 2 Veggie Burritto's w/ cilantro to set it off. Drinks: Even though they don't have a full bar, they had plenty Cerveza's to choose from. Also Horchata & other juice drinks. I got a Negro Modelo, Orale! My wife got the Horchata, was good but looked like it came from a machine & not homemade. Salsa Fresca: Yes, Salsa was fresh & plentiful. Every good Mexi spot needs a Salsa Bar like this especially if you like to make your own Wet Burrito, like I do! Atmosphere: Casual & clean. Will we be back again when visiting the area. Si amigo!

This place was terrible. The service was poor and the food was too expensive for how cheap it was. The person working was rude to me and they forgot to bring me my chips. If you like cheap plastic cheese and 10 cent tortillas prices for 5$ then this is the place for you. It's better than Taco Bell but not by much.

I drive all the way from Oak Harbor just to get my Taco Lobo fix! It's super cozy, friendly and their salsa bar has so many options. We order the chile relleno every time because it's simply the best out there. One time, they were out but made an exception and whipped up the dish for us! Such great service(:

  • Lisa S.

Best Mexican in Skagit or Whatcom County. Can't beat homemade everything. My go-to are the chicken quesadillas. Tender, flavorful chicken in green sauce inside a homemade, deep fried pocket of masa. Can't beat their salsa and guacamole bar. Fast, friendly service. I do,however, wish they had a fresh juice margarita.

Oh my gosh, I LOVE Taco Lobo! It's the first restaurant I went to when I moved to Bellingham in 2002 and I still go there all the time. Love that salsa bar!

Coming from a Mexican background and Mexican family (cooking) I know what a sope is supposed to taste like, and no, it doesn't include raw dough. Asked an employee if that's how it's supposed to me be and he looked clueless then had the audacity to ask me if I even knew what sopes are supposed to taste like. Heard the kitchen complaining in the back, I usually don't complain but this was awful customer service. Too bad we tipped before we even got our meal, it wasn't pleasant.

Ok Mexican. I enjoy the salsa bar, provides more variety. One basket of chips per order seems pretty stingy especially when you have 4+ people. My husband likes the carnitas, however I find them a bit too greasy and a little gamey tasty, which makes me question the quality of the meat. The refried beans are definitely made with lard, which makes them tasty. The rice is also average. I do enjoy the home made tortillas, a little dense but good corn flavor. I also wish they trimmed the meat a little better, whether it's chicken or pork there tends to be skin, fat, and cartilage left in, which I hate biting into. All in all ok.

We went here because it was well-reviewed, locally owned, downtown, and affordable...and they had burritos. Unfortunately, we did not enjoy the food! My brother lives in Tennessee and was talking about how much better the mexican food is out there, (Tennessee?!) and I was wondering myself what the B'ham yelp people were eating when they gave the good reviews! We had the carnitas burrito and an asada one, and both were very bland from beans to meat. We had to try all the salsas to give some flavor to the food and instead of putting a little salsa to liven up a tasty burrito, here we were dipping every bite in salsa. The employees were quite friendly, but we came here for the food, not to make friends. I'll try this place again because there are convincing positive yelp reviews for it, but I'm definitely not getting a burrito, and I'll probably try some other places downtown before coming back here.

Great Mexican Food with consistent quality, really enjoy both the made in house salsa bar and tortillas. Good Place to have a group of 10 and they have free Wi-Fi that actually works. Today I saw a man who I think is the owner and told how much I enjoy the food and restaurant overall he told they have been in business for thirteen years. I have enjoyed this place during many of my visits to Bellingham. As and added bonus the location is bike friendly (see photo)

Salsa bar is the best around. Fresh and delicious! The Chile Rellano is the most unique and tasty I've ever eaten. I love the service. I love the food. And I love the downtown location!

  • Dylan W.

This place used to be pretty good. It's fallen pretty far. I had a burrito and they did not put any rice or beans in it, just chicken lettuce and a bunch of sour cream. Their salsa bar seems great, but they are all watered down and I would say mediocre at the very best. My advice: go somewhere else. Personally I'm never going back

  • Dee B.

As far as Mexican goes in the Ham, Taco Lobo is pretty good. The salsa bar is awesome, but the guacamole is a bit weird. It's runny...? There are absolutely no vegan options and the beans have pork lard in them, so it's not really vegetarian friendly either. It can also be a bit dirty in there, but if you like meat and aren't picky, the food is pretty swell! Oh and the giant margaritas are delish.

  • Jae S.

Taco Lobo isn't AMAZING, but it isn't awful either. Stopped in to feed my two boys and myself with a burrito each. Pretty standard fare. I have traveled quite a bit throughout regions that have good Mexican food but this place doesn't make it on my list of "now that's authentic" food. This is an alright quick bite to eat place but nothing memorable food wise. The owner seems like a genuine good guy and the service overall was nice.

So very, very gooood! Traveling & found the place from my fellow Yelpers, thank you! Had the chicken enchilada w/ rice & beans & I'm not even a meat eater...if anyone's finicky about their chicken; have no fear, eat here & enjoy =)

Ventured to this side of Bellingham (which is beyond my usual Costco, Walmart, Trader Joe's) because of the high reviews I found in Yelp. So my friend and I arrived 1055am, had to wait.. The restaurant (had a cheesy Mexican appeal with its yellow walls & tiles) apparently opens at 11am SHARP on a Saturday. It was a fast-food sort of thing, wherein the customer goes up to the cashier, order, and then they give you chips and a number. I ordered a Margarita, their cheese and chicken quesadilla while my friend ordered a chicken tamale. I requested no rice and just asked to load up on the sour cream to the only person who I think speaks English inside this joint (I tried asking others where the toilets where, & all looked at me as if I was speaking Mandarin). The salsa bar was interesting... salsa was freshly made, but the guacamole & other hot sauces were DEFINITELY watered down. Plus, my friend and I love spicy food (their highest rating of 5 chiles apparently wasn't spicy for either of us). The quesadilla was unconventional (compared to Taco Bell I guess -lol). It more looked like a taco with a thick outer crust. Also, to my annoyance, the sour cream I requested to load up was minimal!! Suddenly felt like I was back in Canada. Overall, the best part of the meal for me was the huge-ass Margarita that only cost 6.50 usd! Bottomline is, I don't think I'd come back to this place again. The food was just mediocre and a disappointment considering the high ratings here.

  • Yell P.

Great place to eat. Fast service, consistent food, family friendly environment. I usually get a torta and some tacos. I think the best meat is the carnitas. The bread on the torta could be a little better but that's the only knock.

  • Brie D.

I admit, I haven't branched out to eat anything but their delicious nachos or delectable quesadilla but this is one of my favorite restaurants in Bellingham. They have an amazing salsa bar. Try the guacamole, it's out of this world. The staff is so friendly and kind.

Nom nom nom nom. So we were driving back home from Blaine and needed lunch. Popped into a rest stop so I could get on my phone to see what Yelp had to say. Decided on Taco Lobo because of reviews and Mexican just sounded good. Were not disappointed. Super friendly staff, cool space and good eats. Kids had fun trying the salsas from the salsa bar, and the pork I got (#1) was scrumptious. Will definitely return if ever in area.

this place obviously has alot of fake reviews, just eat there once then read these reviews its ridiculous.

    (1)
  • Rodney L.

This place has a great taco salad, and their soups are so good. It is pretty tough to find vegetarian option,s as it seems like they put something meat-related into just about every dish (including the beans, the rice etc.) The burritos are also pretty large and pretty tasty. I recommend the pork ones!

  • E B.

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Bellingham, the carne asada tacos keep me coming back. Great lunch specials, too! There is a self serve salsa bar, which is a fun addition. Great place for a quick lunch!

Visited Taco Lobo last week as a result of the good reviews here. Didn't expect anything elaborate -- just flavorful Mexican food in a low-key restaurant. What I experienced? First the service: Ordered and paid for the special, discovered it was sold out. Ordered Carne en Chile instead. Received a refund, which I gave them as a tip. Received a huge platter of meat with 3 small tortillas. Learned it was $1.50 for 3 more ($.50 per tortilla? really?). Paid for that. Waited 10 minutes for the tortillas. Waited 15 minutes for my margarita. Guys behind the counter seemed disorganized, and moved very slowly. Next the food: The dominant flavor of my meal, and my wife's, was salt. It was difficult to taste anything else at all. The salsa bar had several different choices -- and I tried 4 different ones -- but each tasted pretty much identical, and were watery. The guacamole was watery and tasted like it was made from a package rather than having avocados in it. I love good Mexican food, and always make a point to sample some when I visit the US. Taco Lobo was disappointing - salty food with little other flavor, mediocre service, and high prices for what you get.

Why does this place get such great reviews? The moment I walked in I could tell I wasn't going to like this place. I'm usually greeted whenever I walk into a restaurant - but here I wasn't. Ok, maybe they are busy...no. I went up to the counter to order...still no greeting. The guy just stared at me waiting to order. Me and my boyfriend finally order and go take our seats. The food arrives and I couldn't be more disappointed. This is not authentic Mexican food - not even an attempt was made. The sauce and tortillas were dry, they put very little chicken in my enchiladas and I could tell the that rice and beans had been sitting out for a while - especially the beans because they were getting hardened on top which is what happens when they've been sitting out and re-heated. I tried eating it but it was disgusting. My boyfriend ordered the nachos and he was disappointed as well. They hardly put any toppings on and the chips were stale. We winded up getting a refund and leaving. I was also disappointed during the entire time we were there not one employee had asked us how we were or if we needed anything and the place wasn't even busy.

if the event was mexican food in bellingham then taco lobo wins the gold medal and the crowd goes wild and Bob Costas does the post game interview with salsa all over his tie. its always nice when you walk into a mexican restaurant and there are other mexican people eating food there. or at least people that look like they are mexican. when i walked into taco lobo there was alot of people that looked mexican and they were eating the food. and they looked happy. then i ordered the food and i ate it. and i was super happy.

  • Adam D.

The food was average, but just average. It didn't live up to expectations, even though nothing was particularly wrong. Average food but it was pricier then a bunch of other Mexican places. Decent place but not a top pick.

  • Tim W.

Been here twice, went the second time because after reading all these rave reviews, I knew that I had to have either gotten them on a bad day, or ordered a less-than-stellar item. Unfortunately, the Pollo Asado and the Asada Burrito I had on my two trips were both fine, but pretty "meh". Definitely not the best in Bellingham, and much more expensive (and not as tasty) compared to our local taco trucks.

    (3)
  • Mary B.

Do NOT come here if you are a vegetarian. Due to being an "authentic" Mexican restaurant - beans/tortillas are cooked in lard and the rice has chicken stock in it. I don't think there is a vegetarian friendly item on the list. Needless to say, this was a bad choice for dinner. On a nicer note - the wait staff were INCREDIBLY friendly and helpful. It just wasn't the right setting. The party I was with thought the food was only "okay"... their opinion, not mine.

Wonderful food, wonderful service! Love the salsa bar. Fresh ingredients. Can call ahead if you're ordering it for take out. If I ask for a substitution they never charge me. I ask for no beans, so they give me extra rice. Husband doesn't like sour cream, so they give me extra. I never get charged! Would highly recommend.

You know it was good food when you find yourself staring at the plate wishing it wasn't over already. I love, love, the chicken enchiladas here. I don't know how they do it. Also I love mixing the salsa, a green and red swirl, the super hot and the guacamole salsa in one dish. An chilled bottle of Negro Modelo with all this, and I'm eating one of my favorite meals. My only complaint is that I usually eat it too fast, then it's gone, then I have to wait until I get hungry again to eat more. It's a vicious cycle.

Sadly it took me over 6 years in Bellingham to finally get to Taco Lobo. While I still love El Gitano and El Rinconcito (my other fav bham mexican joints) there is something different about the food here. Well first of all you order at the counter rather than from a server, but also, they offer a salsa bar as many others have mentioned, and they have some items that offer more than the routine tex mex plates. While not adventurous at all, my favorite dish is the chicken quesadillas - no ordinary quesadillas. They are a folded thicker masa-type tortilla filled with cheese, marinated chicken, lettuce, tomato, and sour cream. Its just amazing - I'm making myself hungry right now! So I'm sad to say it took me so long to go there after passing the storefront all through college. The only downside is that with the counter ordering and seat yourself simplicity, the food still comes with a pretty high pricetag. I'm not saying it isn't worth it, but just something to consider.

Great Mexican food. Nice fresh salsa bar and good portions. One bad thing is street parking and can only use coins to pay. I never have coins.

A visit to Taco Lobo is in order if I'm in Bellingham. It's best to come with a group - have someone snag a table and someone else dispatched to the salsa bar while you wait in line - Taco Lobo fills up quickly, especially around lunchtime! The menu is both extensive and typical of Mexican food locations. I've dallied around the menu and most recently enjoyed the carnitas tacos ($2.50/each with 2 filling me up amply). The carnitas were fresh, if a little covered in juices, breaking down my tortillas pretty quickly. Topped with a helping of cabbage, onion, and cilantro, they were delicious on their own and made phenomenal with some of the salsa verde. If you order a platter with other menu items (burritos, enchiladas) your food is served with a side of beans and rice - a more-than-ample lunch that a co-worker made it a mission to finish ("I ate soooo much foooood," was his later lament). Better Mexican food, especially considering the location (Washington State is not exactly synonymous with delicious Mexican, though Bellingham does make a better showing than most other places), cannot be found.

I am a veteran taco lobo fan and diner, mostly for lunch. Having had many good meals there I need to comment on my lunch today. Today chicken mole was the special. Their chicken is great, and I love mole sauce -- when made properly. It arrived at the table, looked good, and smelled like nice mole also. But as I tasted it, it was really bland. With mole there should be a slight, sweet afterburn of peppers and spice which was not evident. I had to go to the salsa bar and amend the dish -- which with mole is not what you would ordinarily do. I hope that Taco Lobo isn't trying to "dumb down" Mexican dishes in order to appeal to super-sensitive gringos that want bland food, while depending on their (awesome) salsa bar to help those of us who want to taste something.

Dear Taco Lobo, I came in for dinner with some friends a while back... l waited to write my review because I was so pissed off Im sure I would of used words for grownups, and called you names. I have eaten your dinners a number of times, and the food has always been decent, no complaints there, some of it is downright good. Its what I call mock mexican....not authentic by any stretch, but still tasty The annoying part has been your, at best, mediocre service... thing is I have pretty low expectations of you to begin with.... since I order at a counter and you simply have to match me to a number on a table...yet you still manage to have screwed that up more than once. As often as not your tables need a good clean, and your staff isnt too helpful, its obvious you are busy there, but you might want to stop overworking them so much that they have bad attitudes. The general vibe I always get from your staff, is stressed out, rushed, understaffed, annoyed, and fed up. On this occasion I came in with about 10 friends and our food took over 60 min to get (the first one), and close to an hour and a half later you had delivered only about a third of it. It took FOREVER, your people were clueless, we kept asking.... it sucked, your people sucked, and the food we EVENTUALLY got sucked (actually the food only kinda sucked, but sitting here writing this, its getting me remembering how pissed I was and what a crap evening you provided for us... so its hard not to toss that "it sucked" tag on the food too) No-one ever gave us even a halfway acceptable reason why it took stupid long, your staff had attitude, because we were not the only ones in the place pissed off and waiting WAY too long for food....so after a while your workers were fed up with your customers getting annoyed about not getting what they had paid for even relatively promptly, and they were being dicks about it, that made for an even more pleasant evening as you might imagine. Sooooo bottom line, I haven't gone back, and I have gone out of my way to veto any suggestion from friends that ever want to go there, unlike most places even if they are average Ill keep my mouth shut and go anyway, its about the social aspect, not the food or service so much.... In your case I"l toss a hissy fit if I have to, your never ever getting another of my dollars..and I go out of my way to make sure as many of my friends dont put money in your pocket either ( YES, it was that big a CRAP of an evening!) Instead of a pleasant social evening we ended up a bunch of cranky, hungry, fed up people... I doubt this review will have any effect on your business, since many of your reviews are glowing, they obviously haven't had the crappy experience I have, but buyer beware, if it starts going south on you, its going to be a bumpy ride! ONE STAR IS WAY TOO MANY

Tasty, Authentic Mexican food at a family-owned and run restaurant. Fast and friendly service! The salsa bar is amazing -- freshly made and spicy. Cheerful and colourful decor with lots of neon, and lively Mexican music playing. Clean and spacious. Definitely a good place to go when you are craving Mexican food.

Great authentic mexican. Traveling in the area and yelp led us to this south of the boarder gem. Wife had carnitas very moist without the loads of grease normally found. I ordered the tamales both chicken and pork. The pork had excellent flavor the chicken was a bit bland. However the tomatillo salsa spices them up nicely. Salsa on the bar was fresh and tasty.

I live in central California where it's easy to come by good Mexican food. So when my family in Bellingham said they had a good Mexican joint to take me to, I was skeptical , to say the least. Good Mexican food in Washington always seemed like something unobtainable, like figuring out algebra. Imagine my surprise when I walked into this funky little place. It smelled like some of those great restaurants back in Fresno! I didn't want to get too excited so I ordered a chicken enchilada and held my breath until it arrived. While waiting, we feasted on great chips and an assortment of salsas from the salsa bar. My suggestion: mix the green and hot red salsas together. Muy bueno! My one enchilada arrived and was enough to feed at least three people. The all white chicken was cooked perfectly, the green sauce was tasty and had a bit of a zing to it..just the way I like it. The tortillas are homemade. Enough said. So yes, it is possible to find great Mexican food in Washington. Check out Taco Lobo, munch on some chips and salsa and have a beer out on the patio while you wait for your food. You will not be disappointed. Muy muy bueno!!

Tasty, tasty salsa bar!!! The Tomatillo salsa is my new favorite!! Found by accident last weekend while buzzing home thru Bellingham. Great location - looks small form outside but opens up to large family-oriented dining room w/ 2 dining rooms. STAFF: Truly friendly staff that went out of their way to answer questions for us. You order at the bar & someone brings you your order. WHAT ABOUT THE PRICE?!?! I thought it was quite reasonable pricing for the large amount of food. (My carnitas Burrito was STUFFED w/ lip-smacking meat!) My meal as "entree" & fountain drink was $12+. Brought left-overs home in environment friendly container ;-) My advice -- Check 'em out & see what you think!

Having lived my first 43 years in Texas, (and having Mexican ancestry) I feel particularly qualified to review a Mexican food eatery located in the Pacific Northwest:) We've mostly visited on Wednesdays for the Chicken Mole special and I've NEVER been disappointed. I always split the dish with whoever I "drag" to Taco Lobo and they become instant fans. (both of the dish, and the restaurant) Yesterday was no exception, although I must say, for some reason (perhaps because it was early in the day?) the chicken was so tender, it made me want to hurl my fork to the winds. Of course, being Hispanic, we take the corn tortilla and use our grateful fingers to tear off a piece and scoop up the juicy chicken and sauce with it, so I kept the fork to use with the "almost-like-mama's" rice which is served as a side dish. (along with beans, which are really good here, but aren't my favorite plate mate). The chips and array of serve-yourself salsa is a great addition while you are waiting for the server to bring your order-at-the-counter dishes. It's Thursday now, and I'm already counting down the days until next Wednesday and looking through my list of friends to see who I can introduce to my favorite Mexican Restaurant this side of the border (well, the Canadian border at least:)

Looooove this place!! This is just about as authentic as Mexican gets here in the Northwest!! The staff is super friendly. All the different salsas in the salsa bar are absolutely delicious. I love the home made corn tortillas. Their Pollo Asado is the best in bellingham. And you have to try one of their tortas.. I recommend Al Pastor. :)

Man...Taco Lobo has some great Mexican food! While visiting Bellingham, my husband and I wanted some Mexican food and referred to the handy Yelp application on the iPhone. Yelp did not disappoint and lead us to this place. We ordered our food at the counter and were given a basket of chips (you get a basket of chips if your order is over $5). The salsas they had available were quite tasty...I loved the pico de gallo. For my entree I ordered the three taco plate combination (2 beef & 1 chicken) and my husband ordered the Chicken Asado plate. Both dishes come with rice and beans. We loved our dishes but the chicken stood out to both of us. The chicken pieces in my taco and his Asado were juicy and well seasoned. And, the rice and beans were really good too. The staff here is friendly and efficient. We didn't wait very long for our food after we ordered. The prices here are also reasonable. I wish they would open location in Seattle. They would totally make a killing!

Growing up in San Diego, I have become accustomed to decent Mexican food. Upon arrival in Bellingham, I exited I-5 heading towards WWU. The first Mexican food place I saw was Taco Time, and I decided to try some PNW burritos. Big mistake. Needless to say, I have not been back in almost 2 years. This less than pleasurable experience led to a search for delicious, decently priced Mexican food in Bellingham. I won't lie, it was months of rigorous, exhausting work. I endured countless hardships; the rain and wind outside Super Marios, a food baby the size of Texas after a certain burrito at Casa Que Pasa, sweating out gallons of water due to excessive hot sauce consumption. Taco Lobo stands above the rest. It has an awesome atmosphere, nice employees who can barely speak English (a requirement for good Mexican food), fresh chips, the most delicious guacamole hot sauce I've ever tasted, handmade tortillas, and countless items on their menu that have never failed to satisfy my somewhat picky taste buds. I would highly recommend trying this place out.

You'll see lots of young college types working the counter and serving, and an older Mexican couple cooking. This must be the formula for great food and fast service. The fresh salsa bar is such a treat with usually 8 salsas to choose from so there is something for every palate. They have limited outdoor seating which is quickly snatched up by dog folks on nice days. I wish I lived closer to Taco Lobo. We stop here every time we are in downtown Bellingham.

Was also impressed by great reviews...went a couple of weeks ago and was disappointed. Food was so so. The fresh sauces were great. If this is authentic Mexican, then I guess maybe I like Tex-Mex way more. I wouldn't go back again.

Really tasty relatively authentic Mexican. Excellent beans and rice, house made tortillas, and slow cooked meats. The great little salsa bar with hand cut pico de gallo is a nice addition. I went here regularly during college, and make a point to stop by on my trips through the 'Ham.

The only food spots I knew of in Bellingham was Red Robins and the Bellis Fair Mall food court. Thanks to my trusty phone and Yelp app, I found Taco Lobo. Bellingham was the meet spot for my Edmontonian friend who flew into Vancouver and then bused over the border to meet me. We had 5 hours to spend and I thought we could do better than mall food so we tried out Taco Lobos. It was decent. The seating is casual, all chair seating, and the food was fresh. She had the tamale with rice and beans, I had the halibut tacos. Both were fair but nothing exceptional. We shared complementary chips, pico de gallo, cooked salsa and a large margarita. Total bill came out to be $24. Reasonable considering the size and strength of the margarita! The food's not that memorable but the drink will have me back if I'm ever in the neighborhood again.

My partner & I are very limited on time due to working different schedules, and like everyone else on the planet, we're limited budgetwise too. So when we decide to spend our 'food credits' at a restaurant, it's a big decision. That being said, Taco Lobo is the place we go to more than anywhere else in B'ham. I've never been to any other restaurant where the sides (beans & rice) are as tasty as the entrees. Everything tastes so fresh and every flavor stands out. You can look into the kitchen and see the refries cooking, and when you order, you can hear them chopping up ingredients right then & there. I'm a tamale junkie, and their masa is wonderful, fluffy and light and savory. The pork filling is a perfect spicy complement. I also love the birrio. Smokey, saucy pork, with just-right tortillas for scooping. My partner (who has travelled extensively in Mexico) says this is the closest to Mexico she has tasted anywhere. Her favorite is the tacos al pastor. Messy but oh-so-good! Free chips & salsa (and such yummy salsa!), friendly service, great prices....and we haven't even tried their margaritas yet! Let me add, we drive all the way from Everson to eat here, it's that good. Dang it! I'm trying to find a new place to spend our 'food credits' tomorrow, and now all I want is Taco Lobo....

Best Mexican in Bellingham I am thankful to the person who first introduced me to Taco Lobo - I am a regular and anyone who knows me will tell you it's my favorite lunch spot in town (great for dinner too). The food is great! I love their Carnitas and their pollo verde, but really it's all good. There's about 4 things that set Lobo apart... 1) Tortillas: their tortillas are hand-made fresh, on the spot and they are great. I always order something that comes with 3 tortillas on the side...awesome! Taste just like the ones I got off the street in Mexico. 2) Salsa Bar: they have a great and big selection of salsas: I love their guacemole and Pico de Gallo 3) Value: You get a lot of food for 6.95-8.95 - every order comes with chips too...I'm always stuffed. 4) Authentic food: their food is not smothered in cheese, but is very authentic. If you're looking for generic Mexican ala Las Margaritas, Azteca, etc. you won't like it here... If you come for lunch, come early (before 11:45) or you'll be in the lunch rush.

While visiting a friend who attends western, I was in the mood for mexican, and yelp listed this as a good one. It was indeed! The refried beans are the best I've ever had, I wanted more! They are super delicious if you dip chips in it, and then in the fresh pico! I got chicken enchiladas, and they are unlike any i've had elsewhere. They taste super fresh and home made, the tortilla is thicker than any I've had before. The salsa bar is fantastic, the green salsa is delicious!

  • Sara L.

Most authentic Mexican food in town, I believe, and all-around tasty! Not as cheap for what you get as a couple other downtown "Mexican" places, but certainly more like Mexico - down to the beers and other beverages. It's always a good sign when the staff is communicating mostly in Spanish, I'd say. Also, there's plenty of room, so you can bring a good-sized group in without a problem unless it's at an especially busy time.

Taco Lobo is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Bellingham. The food may be a little on the greasy side depending on what you order (I always get chicken enchiladas) but is always authentic and amazing. It has a very casual feel, it can get noisy at times, but it's not the kind of place where that should be an issue. The salsa bar is always a good addition, especially when you don't want simply standard salsa. I've been here countless times and will continue to return.

Who knew that you had to travel so close to the northern border to get amazingly authentic and tasty Mexican food? Of particular note is that they serve yummy aguas frescas. The jamaica is perfectly refreshing on a hot summer day.

  • Daniel H.

NOT the most authentic Mexican food in Whatcom County (try El Gitano in Sunset square or better yet - Chihuahua's in Ferndale) but it's the best in the downtown area. The rice and beans here are pretty solid - moreso than any other spot downtown, but the big draw for me is the salsa bar. Not as many fresh cut salsas as Banditos (their saving grace) but the Pica de Gallo here is good and if you mix it with a bit of the red sauce you've got a pretty solid dipping salsa. Not to mention it's all-you-can-stuff-your-face-with ... a good lunchtime option if you want to save half a meal for later - go fill up on the chips and take half your entree home. Another plus for these guys: there are actually Mexicans who are running the show here, rather than some dreadlocked college students making your "mexican" food. It's still not Yakima, but it's better than the other downtown options.

My husband and I have eaten here quite a bit in the past and considered it the best Mexican in Bellingham. We had not eaten here in awhile and ate there last night; we were very disappointed. We both felt the food was not up to the usual standards. I usually love their beans...they were cold and not very flavorful. I had the tostada; average at best. He had the pollo asado (spelling may be off) and he was not happy with it. He felt the chicken was tough and overcooked and not warm. He also felt the beans were bland. And usually the chips are great...not so last night. We arrived a bit after 8:30 pm so maybe they were near closing and didn't care. Just doesn't make us want to go back downtown to go there again.

The food is by far some of the best Mexican food I've had in the northwest. They have a really good salsa bar. The food has really great flavors that remind me of back home. I have never had a bad meal at this place. I love how they even make there own tortillas

  • Brett A.

YUM! That really sums it up. If you are looking for delicious Mexican food, the Lobo is where you should be headed. The good: Authentic, made fresh to order, a great salsa bar, and margaritas/beer if you want them! I usually stick to the pollo asado burrito when I go (so good!), but most everything else I've tried has also been great. The not so good: A little spendy (in my opinion), at times pretty busy, closed on Sundays, and sometimes a long wait for food (even when you're the only one in the restaurant)..

Best Mexican food for many many miles, you can keep your taco trucks in the parking lot. The food is authentic, the best carnitas I have ever had. I find it hard to order anything else, but the carne asada is a dang close second. NTM really good homemade corn tortillas, perfect Mexican rice, and refried beans I want to drink they are so rich and amazing.

A colleague and I were driving from a business meeting in Vancouver to Seattle and were getting hungry for dinner. I opened my laptop and courtesy of my Verizon aircard and yelp, began hunting for a decent place to eat. Neither was in the mood for a particular type of food, so we contemplated Middle Eastern, Japanese, Mexican, etc. The reviews for Taco Lobo sounded good, it was convenient from the highway, so we decided to give it a try. WOW! It was not fancy, so don't expect tablecloths and fancy lighting. Judging from the exterior, it is most likely a place we would have passed by were it not for Yelp. Walking in, we were foolishly waiting to be seated until we were told to order from the menu board first then grab a seat. The food was amazing. The homemade tortillos were warm and tasty. The salsa bar had a delicious array of colorful condiments in varying degrees of hot -- all freshly homemade and spectacular. I tried 4 or 5 different sauces. I am a vegetarian and the small Veggie Taco combo platter; my colleague had the steak burrito which he raved about. Total bill with one drink (mine only), came to $27. A bargain for delicious food. If I lived in or near Bellingham, WA, I'd be a regular. Unfortunately I live near Bellingham, MA -- a mere 3,113 miles or 46 hours drive. But next time I have the opportunity, you can be sure I will be stopping at Taco Lobos!

People like to argue about the "authenticity" of Mexican food. I don't really get into those kind of discussions - I've been outside the tourist zones in Mexico and had carnitas, pollo asado, tamales and tacos that are an awful lot like the ones at Taco Lobo. You are not served a platter with something that could be an enchilada, burrito or chimichanga slathered in cheese and tomato sauce, which is pretty standard for Americanized Mexican food. The menu is also devoid of "Tex-Mex" dishes like chimichangas and fajitas, which I actually like. So it's authentic as far as I'm concerned. But that really doesn't address whether it is good or not. Taco Lobo is ranked on Yelp as one of the best restaurants in Bellingham. I could argue with that, but I wouldn't argue that it is the best Mexican food in Bellingham. The tamales come wrapped in a corn husk, like they should, and aren't dug out of freezer like you will find at most other Mexican places. The salsa bar has the kind of variety and flavor you would hope for. The tortillas are freshly pressed and quality and care is taken with every dish on the menu. I personally recommend the tamales, pollo en salsa verde, any of the tacos and the carnitas. I'm not a fan of Chile Relleno but I'm told it is excellent. Taco Lobo is ranked No.1 for Mexican food in Bellingham with good reason. If you're traveling in Mexico, you can find restaurants that specialize in carne asada, carnitas, ceviche or pollo asado that is superior to what you find at Taco Lobo. However, you won't find anything better in Bellingham.

I've lived in Bellingham since 2003, and only this summer discovered the mouth-watering wonder that is Taco Lobo. Despite numerous recommendations, we always ended up at El Gitano (another great choice!). I'm glad we decided to branch out. The food is excellent and the cafeteria-style atmosphere is very different from the Azteca-esque you encounter at most Mexican restaurants. I still love El Gitano and Mi Mexico, but I'm pleased to add another great Mexican option to the list.

Some of the best Mexican food in Bellingham short of going to one of the Taco Wagons. Carne Asada tacos and the Carnitas are super tastie. Service can be hit or miss. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you. I have had my lunch completely forgotten twice when I arrived right before the lunch rush, and I no longer go by myself to try and prevent this.

Now I love Taco Del Mar, but this place puts any competitor to shame. I love the delicious selection of salsas at the salsa bar. I usually get a combination of pork and chicken tacos, and am never left hungry or disatisfied. Whoever decorated the place deserves a trophy and/or ribbon. But I really think I love this place most because of their salsas.

Do you need another 5 star review to convince you to go to Taco Lobo? Get your buns over there and order your self up my favorite meal: pork tamale (best I've EVER had) and a birria torta! mmmmmMM. I'm drooling just writing this.

I love Taco Lobo and have been going there since it opened! Mostly I like that their food isn't oozing with heavy cheese and sauces! The staff are friendly and the salsa bar is amazing. Never had a bad meal there and sometimes the plates are so big I share : )

Some reviewers say "best Mexican food in Bellingham" -- well, we've lived in Texas and really like Tex-Mex and authenic Mexican cuisine, but I'd say that Taco Lobo is the BEST MEXICAN FOOD IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. When our kids visit from Oregon and California, they always want to have lunch (at least once) at Taco Lobo because they can't find anything to match TL's flavors in Portland or San Francisco! Not only is the food outstanding, Taco Lobo is affordable, the staff is attentive and professional, but also the place is cheerful, clean, and the salsa bar is outstanding!

: Taco Lobo is the shit!! The only authentic mexican food in town besides the taco trucks, and here you can sample from an awesome fresh salsa bar and get delicous margaritas. Try the pork al pastor (pineapple) it's an amazing mix of spicy and sweet. I have never had a bad meal at taco lobo, and even though its probably not the healthiest thing you could be eating, nothing there is smothered with cheese or grease. If you are craving delicious mexican food at a reasonable price, try it out.

My favorite Mexican restaurant in all of Bellingham - this place is run by a family and is entirely authentic. They have great specials and giant margaritas. Their salsa bar is amazing, with 3 different salsas to choose from and lots of cilantro. I always order the bean burrito entre, delivering a five pound burrito with loads of rice and beans. You can eat off of that sucker for a week, if you had to. It's full of flavor and not a grease pit, plus they just expanded the restaurant to include more seating and a margarita bar. Beautifully decorated, as well. Prices vary from about $8-15 per meal.

one of the most authentico Mexican restuarants in Bellingham. only been there a few times but have enjoyed it so far. endless chips and salsa, salsa bar with different salsas and toppings, bowls of lime chunks to garnish with or to flavor your water. affordable eats and nice size portions. Best Mexican food in Whatcom County. Fresh. Everything from scratch. The pollo asado is my favorite. The best salsa in town. It's fast also. Maybe a 5-10 minute on food. Great drink prices also. I love it so much.

The salsa bar is good. The chicken not so much. Or was that chicken ? Grey meat always makes me wonder ! Over cooked. The owners dog was tied up out front and barked its face off the whole time. Unpleasant !

Flavorful Mexican food. We have been here twice. The salsa bar is fresh with quite a few options. The service has been great both times. Food comes out quickly. Chips are crisp and warm. After gorging ourselves in Seattle, I opted for an easy salad with chicken. I know, not the most Mexican option on the menu, but I was blown away with the amount of chicken and I appreciated the item was on the menu. The chicken was moist, tender and flavorful. My previous meal there had been spot on. We will be back.

Taco Lobo, in my opinion has the best fish tacos in Bellingham. The salsa bar lets you decide what salsas you want on your food. The fresh made tortillas are an improvement over those off the shelf tortillas, a bit improvement. Keep in mind that this is the "Counter style" mexican food experience. You order at the counter like fast food, but the bring the food to your table. You get a basket of chips with your order, at lunch this is plenty, but if you are having dinner, maybe some margaritas, you might need to purchase another basket of chips.

Best Mexican in Skagit or Whatcom County. Can't beat homemade everything. My go-to are the chicken quesadillas. Tender, flavorful chicken in green sauce inside a homemade, deep fried pocket of masa. Can't beat their salsa and guacamole bar. Fast, friendly service. I do,however, wish they had a fresh juice margarita.

Highly recommend.

one of the most authentico Mexican restuarants in Bellingham. only been there a few times but have enjoyed it so far. endless chips and salsa, salsa bar with different salsas and toppings, bowls of lime chunks to garnish with or to flavor your water. affordable eats and nice size portions.

Great place to eat. Fast service, consistent food, family friendly environment. I usually get a torta and some tacos. I think the best meat is the carnitas. The bread on the torta could be a little better but that's the only knock.

This place has a great taco salad, and their soups are so good. It is pretty tough to find vegetarian option,s as it seems like they put something meat-related into just about every dish (including the beans, the rice etc.) The burritos are also pretty large and pretty tasty. I recommend the pork ones!

The food was average, but just average. It didn't live up to expectations, even though nothing was particularly wrong. Average food but it was pricier then a bunch of other Mexican places. Decent place but not a top pick.

This place is amazing. Truly authentic, this coming from a guy born and raised in California. The Chilie Relleno is a must. If you like good Mexican food this is the place.

Excellent spicy tacos only $2.50 ea. And free chips if you spend more than 6 bucks. The best bang for your taco bucks around.

Delicious, and pretty inexpensive! Feels like a fast food restaurant but the quality is far above. Would like to see tortilla soup on the menu . . .

Beats any Mexican place I have been able to find in Vancouver, BC. Large portions and reasonably priced. We really enjoyed the Chile Relleno, which was served in a soup.

This place was great! I had the chorizo taco. It was very delicious. The salsas were nice and spicy. The guacomole was very different than what I am use to, but it tasted very good.

I love Taco Lobo and have been going there since it opened! Mostly I like that their food isn't oozing with heavy cheese and sauces! The staff are friendly and the salsa bar is amazing. Never had a bad meal there and sometimes the plates are so big I share : )

LOVE THE LOBO.... and it appears if you are a super hot gay mexican 20 year old you can also have a job here! Thank you lobo....for being here...but open up on sunday... daddy needs burritos on the speacial day too.

This is my favorite local restaurant in Bellingham. I've been told, it's as authentic as you can get (and still be in Bellingham). Their margaritta's and chili relleno's are awesome!

Best Mexican in Bellingham. But seriously, what's the deal with being closed from Dec 25th to Jan 9th. You're killing me!

In my humble opinion, the best Mexican restaurant in Bellingham. I don't eat beef, but anything on the menu with chicken, pork or vegetables is very good. There's even a service assistant there who's hilarious.

  • Mallory P.

Always fresh, always fast! The frestest Mexican food I have ever tasted hands down. Very rriendly staff and you can enjoy chips and salsa (5 different kinds) while you wait for your food. Sarah is the nicest waitperson in the world!

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
