Awesome place. Took me 15 years to finally make it in. Clean, happy restaurant and staff. Opened up the patio for me because it was too nice to sit inside. Food was excellent. Accommodated my picky, custom order without wincing. Local beer on a tap. Bellingham-must-have. Jill was great!

Food was so-so, sangria was horrible, and we got the major attitude when we went to pay our bill. There's a reason I haven't tried this place since my last bad experience here 10 years ago. If you want a good burrito go to Casa Que Pasa. It's half the price and ten times the service. And don't bother coming with a group because it comes with a side of extra attitude. Sorry we spent $200 on your mediocre food. Don't worry, we won't make that mistake again. There are better places to go with service that matches the bill. I'd give this zero stars if I could.

Our local friend took us here. Without reservations we would have had a 45 minute wait for an inside table but one of the servers said we could risk sitting outside as the sky clouded over. So we got the only outdoor seating under a heating unit, which heated us up just fine. Food was outstanding--I had the vegetarian special: stuffed pepper with perfectly cooked vegetables, primarily marinated mushrooms, with a nice bulgur pilaf and plentiful green salad. The others had salmon with a savory blueberry sauce, excellent black beans and choice of cheesy grits or rice. Flan for dessert--excellente!

Oh yum. The mashed potatoes rellenos are to die for. Portions are perfect and come with rice, beans and salad. Lots of veg options on the menu. Love the ambiance- bright funky wall colors and you can't help but feel cheerful. Reminds me of my favorite place Santa Fe for Southwestern fare- The Shed. Great beer/ciders on tap. Service is friendly (but a bit slow- took a while to be noticed/take our order- but it was a Friday evening). *Chips and salsa are extra if not paying with cash.

Great, authentic Southwestern food. The staff were friendly and helpful, but also gave you lots of space. Lots to choose from on the menu and everything we had was really tasty. We'll be back.

Highly recommend this restaurant. The food is fresh, flavorful, abundant and great. I want to try everything! Spicy means spicy here... Thank god. Service is equally as wonderful. I can't wait to diner here again!

After reading the review of Katy H My buddy and she raved about the pepper sisters and I have to tell you I was glad that I followed her review because this place is the bomb. At first I thought when I was looking at the menu that this was a healthy version of Mexican food and then after I got what I ordered the burrito I can tell you that it was upscale healthy and I will order that again what a great find

I'm a lifetime Bellinghammer. I first ate at Pepper Sisters over 20 years ago. I remember my experience as non-overwhelming, and found no reason to revisit the restaurant since then, given the plethora of interesting eateries in our wonderful town. A group of my wife's friends had planned a meet-up at the Sisters last night, and I thought sure, why not give them another chance? They've been around for so long, I may have just hit them on an off night, lo those many decades ago? Let me just say, I am baffled as to how they have kept the doors open this long , based on last night's experience. I split the pork burrito with my wife. It was just as meh as the dish that I had eaten in the 90's . . . bland, uninspired, and covered in a runny green sauce that had the flavor of cilantro water. If Dennys suddenly decided to add Southwest to their menu, it would surely be more inspiring than what I was presented with. Add in a side of flavorless beans (two kinds, each as boring as the other), and a green salad that could have been re-created if you gave me five seconds and a pair of tongs at the Old Country Buffet, and you've got a pretty good idea of my plate. Our 'Sangria' (quotes intended) rivaled our food for boredom and sheer lack of creativity. If you took a bottle of two-buck-Chuck, added ice, and tossed in a handful of carelessly sliced fruit, I'd roll my eyes, and reluctantly pony up five bucks for that beverage. But 26 dollars? For this totally malevolent mishmash of mixology? Truly,TRULY, one of the most disappointing and overpriced libations that I have ever experienced. Would that my dining dollars had only consisted of lousy, uninspired food and the Chuck-gria, I would most likely not be taking the time to write this review. But amazingly, things went downhill from there. We had seven people at our table. In this age of plastic payment options, wouldn't it just make sense that I might not be the sugar daddy of the table, or that some of the guests might NOT be paying with cash, and that separate checks might be a reasonable assumption for a waitperson to make? Nope, not at the Sisters. After tacking on an 18% gratuity, that, trust me, FAR exceeded the amount that I had slated for the level of service and quality of food that I received, our waitperson, now turned cashier, became verbally abusive when we asked if our party could split the check. We were berated for not having advised while ordering that we did not want to pay in a single lump sum. She proceeded to chide each guest individually for our inconsiderate nature, in not havig specified separate checks, and to tell us that she just didn't have time for 'this' (I assume by 'this', she meant customer service). The kicker? As one of the members of our group was in the women's bathroom, the cook exited the bathroom stall and made direct eye contact with her, before heading back to the kitchen, conspicuously skipping that bothersome hand-washing step. uly the cherry on the sundae of our Pepper Sisters visit. While the wait/cashier made it abundantly clear that it would not bother her if this was our group's last visit, she need not worry about my patronage in the future. I will draw my final breath upon this planet before I would ever visit Pepper Sisters again.

My favorite dish here is the blue corn rellenos, very cheesy and lots of flavor. Sangria is an excellent match with this meal. Some of the other dishes seem kind of bland, not enough cheese, but that is just me. Homemade desserts are almost always excellent.

Had to try yet another B'ham eatery. Limited hours of operation, but worth sliding on in. As is typical of most local joints, singles such as myself are often given "special seating" (any obscure seating area most normal human beings would decline) and as such this Bellingham tradition was continued. However, my seating at the "Catbird" table allowed me clear viewing of patrons and the kitchen (funny, are singles always seated with a view of the dish room?). The menu selection was acceptable and I found the descriptors accurately portrayed my meal (Blue Plate thingies). Excellent salad, enchiladas pleasant (though a little under sauced) beans were good. All in all, one of the better dining experiences I have had here in the 'Hamster. One note though, hard walled former retail locations translate into very, very noisy restaurants. Go, eat, enjoy. Is good!

I love the pepper sisters! It's the only Mexican food in town that isn't that overly cheesy greasy texmex type stuff. It tastes fresh and complex with a ton of menu options! The waitstaff isn't sickening sweet but I'd rather have someone genuine than someone fake and talking to me in a high voice waiting on me. The price is good for what you get, about the same as a crappy Mexican restaurant like jalapeños. All in all the atmosphere is great, the food is fresh and tasty!!!

My first impression wasn't good. We walked into the restuarant and were the only ones waiting for a table. There was an employee, maybe someone in charge?, standing at the hostess area working on papers who completely ignored us. I stood right in front of her and she didn't acknowledge my presence. This isn't ever acceptable and I considered leaving. Another person eventually came and took our name. We went to the bar to wait for a table, ordered a drink, and were shortly seated. Our waitress was very nice but at no point during our meal did anyone ever check back with us. Anything we wanted, including another round of drinks, we had to ask for from a passing waitress. The meal was good with wonderful layers of flavor and just the right amount of kick. This foodie gives the food a 4.5 but sadly, the overall service a 1.5

I wish I could remember the servers name but she was an older hippie-ish woman and she was jamming to a Led Zeppelin song. This was on Friday night, the 10th of April. This server was great; fun, goofy, helpful! We waited 1/2 hour to be seated which was expected and we'll worth the wait. The food was delicious! Wish there was a place like this down in Seattle

Good ambience but that's about it for this spot. I ordered the burrito feugo and its wasn't even spicy. No bueno I would never recommend this place.

OMG YUM! I don't often give 5 stars, but when I do... Pros? -Fresh ingredients -Every bite is to die for... and actually spicy if you like -Big enough portions you can enjoy the same the next day! -Gluten free options galore -Extremely yummy white sangria pitchers Cons? -Can definitely get busy and only open for dinner

This is a great place if you like super bland food! I tried going there 16 years ago and it was really bland. I tried again last week, and it was still really bland. At least they're consistent? Their menu sounds great but they do not deliver the flavor those combinations are capable of.

On a road trip from LA to Vancouver - Pepper Sisters was highly recommended. Stopped in about 7pm and was not disappointed. Sat in the little waiting area at the back of the restaurant - but since it was just me, decided to just order dinner there. Had a great view of the action. Very busy and lots of happy diners. I agree with another review - the food could be spiced up a bit - but overall this was a great stop on my way north.

Unfortunately I really enjoyed the food here but after an recent experience I've decided to take my business elsewhere. I usually like to get takeout here and never had any issues until recently. I called in my take out order, I really like the black bean burrito with extra cheese and a protein added usually chicken and my bf orders the same thing with chorizo, I then wanted to exchange the posole for rice that's when the lady taking my order very clearly *scoffed* and said "do you have anymore changes???" in a completely rude manner... I honestly sat there for a second and thought is this lady scolding me for adding things to make my bill higher??? I can't say I've wanted to go back after that especially with Chipotle opening soon where the burritos are all about personalizing it the way you like. Sad because I like supporting local businesses but it's not worth the drive out from Ferndale only to receive attitude for placing a modified order...

I have lived in Bellingham for eight years and don't know why I have never eaten here because the experience was wonderful! The food is fresh and organic, The atmosphere is hip and retro, and my waitress, Shyrelle, was awesome.

The best time to go is summer, sangria in the sunshine on the back deck. The food here is good, Southwestern style, a little over priced though.

Good food but this place isn't worth the wait. We waited for over an hour with our kids. The staff felt bad, a little... and threw in a bowl of chips and salsa. Nice try but that was a bad, bad experience. If you have children don't go to Pepper Sisters. They have a childrens menu but it's a joke. They don't cater to kids at all. The service was so bad the food hardly mattered because it was so late we just wanted to leave.

Have heard people talk about this place so I decided to give it a try and see what the hype was about. Not impressed sadly even though I wanted to like it. My favorite part was the sopapilla with honey butter so I'm basing my 3 stars on that. The rest was rather blah - I had the quesadilla which was slathered in green and red sauce - so much so that you couldn't even tell what else you were tasting. Came with refried beans which were good and hominy - which was funky and not in a good way. When you have to ask the server what the $&@: it is you are eating, you know you are in trouble LOL. Heartburn, which I don't get easily, ensued the moment I left the place. Found it interesting that they give you chips and salsa free if you pay your bill in cash. Ok but...most Mexican or similar themes restaurants give that to you free anyway regardless of how you pay, so...not sure I will return here anytime soon.

Our sopapillas were literally tossed onto our table with the butter cup upside down, and were served resting on a commercial brown paper towel that are used in public bathrooms. I'll start with that. Still interested in trying this place after reading that? Maybe this will help make your decision: I had no interest in finishing my food, it was that bland and flavorless. They didn't even put salt on anything, much less have the "spicy red pepper pesto sauce" my dish was supposed to have. The rice? Black beans? Main meal? The only thing they did was cook it; that's it. All I ate was the poor excuse for a side salad which probably came from a bag, and I even had to season that. Their "famous" sopapillas are only good if they're slathered in that honey butter; there's no individual taste. I don't know how this place has been in business for so long. Maybe it was good at one time, but I don't go out to pay 30 dollars for a half a cup of salad and butter. The beef tasted like mutton; no seasoning there and I honestly questioned if the meat was even safe to eat as my husband started to feel sick afterwards, not to mention the ridiculous service we recieved. The waiters couldn't have cared less if we were there or even enjoyed our food, as I made several comments on how mediocre it was and they didn't inqure as to why/what they could have done better. They didn't explain their specials and made us feel as if we were a burden to come into their restaurant. Nobody who worked there cared and it was obvious. I don't know if the owner even cares anymore, but if she does, and she reads these reviews, you need to take a step back and either shut down if you're burnt out, or if you really still care, make some serious changes. It was absurd. PLEASE SPEND YOUR MONEY ELSEWHERE!

Their portions are a little large, but overall it wasn't an absurd amount of food. The quesadilla is my favorite entree. One of my favorite places in town to eat.

The best South Western food in Bellingham! You don't always find a healthy place where the food is so good but that is the case for Pepper Sisters. I do love this place and have had great meals every time I have been here which is about 20 times. The dishes are always so full of flavor spicy but not hot and even the salad has a kick to it with the house made dressing. You can not go wrong on there menu and the nightly specials are always good. On a sunny evening on weekends be prepared to wait a short while for a table.

This place is a Bellingham classic, established, and year after year, consistent. This is The Pepper SIster second location, and it is a good one. Really good. On the southern edge of downtown, parking is easy to come by (lots of options). The brick façade, softwood floors, and super high ceilings make for a classic big city feel. The specials really are special and usually interesting and different, taking advantage of seasonal and local products. But the menu is stacked with consistent, familiar, and excellent Southwest dishes. I call them Southwest as opposed to Mexican, though the emphasis is certainly from Mexican cuisine. Enchiladas, burritos, and other "south of the border" favorites are there on the menu, but all are presented in a manner I have never associated with typical American Mexican Restaurant. To start, the chips and salsa are more in line a typical place. But the salsa, technically Pico de Gallo is fantastic. I have been known to buy some in a to-go container. On this visit I ordered and enjoyed Pinky Blue, two blue corn tortillas layered with chicken, grilled onions, chipotle salsa, and jack cheese. The tasty entrée is accompanied by rice and pinto beans, though I substituted the posole for the rice. I am a big fan of the posole, since when do American Mexican Restaurants serve hominy? The beans were good, too. Not just a regular scoop of refried beans, slightly spicy pintos were good. Others enjoyed local caught sockeye salmon (tasty and gone in minutes) and a quesadilla with an arugula salad that was a great vegetarian option. The sopaipilla and honey butter were fantastic finish to a great meal. Oh, and didn't get to mention the blue vinyl booth seats, wagon-wheel chairs (in the lounge) and cool art. Oh well, too much to mention, you'e just got to see and taste the food for yourself!

Even though Pepper Sisters has been serving Bellingham its Southwest American cuisine for over 22 years, my last visit proved that this place does not get the attention that it deserves. While it wasn't dead in the room by any means, I don't often hear the kind of buzz around Pepper Sisters like I do of other longtime Bellingham establishments. In fact, my roommate who has lived in town for five years recently asked me if it was a new restaurant. Before seeing the menu, I knew to expect good things. The specials board near the entrance greeted me with a dish that I would have ordered, had I not been there to review my meal (I only review food available every day). Listen to this: Southwest mac & cheese with grilled asparagus, corn, roasted red peppers and green chilies, with a savory breaded topping, served with a tossed green salad, black beans and pan seared, roasted broccoli with a lemon butter sauce. Fortunately, the standard menu is also filled with items that sounded equally delicious, like the Roasted Potato and Garlic Enchilada or what I ordered, the Red Chili Pesto Vegetable Burrito. In addition to the Georgetown IPA, the meal started off with two sopaipillas, which are basically fluffy fried pastries acting as transportation devices for the addicting honey butter that comes with them. I recommend ordering more than one (only $1 each), or you'll have regrets at the end of the meal. My main dish arrived soon after, looking mighty appetizing. Filled with sauteed mushrooms, grilled onions, potatoes, green chilis and cheddar cheese, the burrito had a lot of spice (we were warned that the peppers that day were "atomic"), but I could still get the flavor from the other ingredients. The burrito was baked perfectly, crunchy on the outside, cheesy veggies and spicy red pepper pesto on the inside. The side salad offered a nice refuge from the heat, but I finished it too quickly. Our waitress checked up on me after noticing I was sweating, and brought a side of sour cream to ease the pain. The service throughout the entire meal was attentive, friendly and quick. Our waitress was unusually playful and full of laughter, but at no point did it feel forced or overbearing. She offered desserts at the end of the meal, jokingly trying to convince us that it'd be a good idea, but I declined; there was no way I was going to force more food into my gut. As summer is getting closer and eating outdoors becomes more appealing, I should note the large outdoor patio in the back. The patio, combined with the spicy food, laid back atmosphere and colorful art, Pepper Sisters seems like an ideal summer dinner spot with friends or loved ones. I should also mention that they don't do separate checks, and they give you a free order of chips and salsa when you pay in cash. I spent $11.75 on my entree, $4 for the beer and $1 for the extra sopaipilla. Disclaimer: This review appeared in the May 2011 issue of What's Up Magazine.

This review is fuelled by guilt. I recommended this restaurant to my dad and his friend from Bellingham after looking on Yelp for an alternative to our favourite Mexican places in the city, Casa Que Pasa and Tadeo's. I am an Elite Yelper and usually find the reviews on Yelp to be accurate...but they were off when describing the food and ambience of Pepper Sisters. We should have gone to Casa Que Pasa. My dad's buddy knew about Pepper Sisters and agreed that we should break away from our regular places to try this highly touted "Southwestern" restaurant on the outskirts of town. We were immediately sceptical upon entering: it was bright, sterile, and cavernous. Our excessively cheery server guided us to a table at the window and handed us our vegetarian-biased menus. Do not eat here if you possess a passion for carne asada and carnitas. The dishes here are dominated by veggies and poultry. This isn't a bad thing in and of itself, but the menu is definitely not balanced. Desperate for flavor and protein, my dad ordered the Pork Burrito and our friend ordered the Pork and Posole Stew. I tried to be open-minded and ordered the veggie Blue Corn Rellenos. I figured they couldn't mess this up since a standard chile relleno is vegetarian, but the Pepper Sisters version was packed with goat cheese. A little goat cheese mixed with the jack cheese would have added a pleasant zing to the filling, but there was so much chèvre that it just ruined the dish. My dad said that the density of his pork combined with the mandatory whole wheat tortilla it was served in resulted in a dry and disturbingly bland burrito. Our friend said the stew was so-so, but that he could have easily made it at home. Adding insult to injury, our bill was almost double what it would have been at most other Mexican restaurants in the city. And I'm sorry, but a few pieces of deep-fried dough ("sopaipillas") don't warrant these inflated prices. If you are vegetarian or are dining with vegetarians, I would actually recommend Pepper Sisters, despite my negative review. They have a huge number of options for those who are unable or are unwilling to consume pork and red meat (aka the backbone of both Mexican and Southwest cuisine). I won't be back here though. PS - The owner, Susan Albert, has never lived nor cooked in the Southwest.

This is a very nice restaurant. It was clean, the staff was friendly, and the food is absolutely delicious, but they only get 4 stars because of the service. We went on a Friday night, and the place got fairly busy, but not overcrowded. The kitchen was pretty quick and the food was incredibly delcious, but it felt like they were short staffed. The waitress seemed to be in a rush when we ordered, and we felt forgotten after we got our food. The hostess was going around to fill our waters which was nice, but my soda never got refilled and I think they overcharged me for it. We waited probably 10 minutes to get our check and still had to ask for it. I would go again for the food - delicious fresh salsa (I wish they brought chips and salsa for free, but it was worth the $3.50). I got the pork and bean burrito, which came with rice and hominy stew. I couldn't finish it all, but wanted to. They brought out fresh warm sopapilla with a cinnamon butter for free that was a nice sweet end to the meal. In short, you should go here, but you will need to be on top of the waitstaff to get anything you want beyond your drink and entree.

My husband and I love this place. We love Spicy food, we love fresh ingredients and this place is consistently great food with exceptional food. The ambiance is perfect for a date or to take the whole family. However, after reading several of the reviews I think there are a few major points that need to be said about this place. 1. This is not a Mexican restaurant, nor does it try to be one. Pepper Sisters classifies themselves as a "American Southwest" style restaurant. That being noted, many of the items on the menu resemble something you may get at a Tex-Mex place. However, you can't say this place is Mexican food. 2. Their menu resembles the demand of Bellingham folks. What I mean is that most people in Bellingham LOVE vegetables. So what is the primary ingredients in the menu? Vegetables! Need meat, the Adovada is AMAZING. they always have great specials and really rather healthy. We can't call this place a vegetarian's restaurant because they actually know how to cook meat. However, when my vegetarian parents are in town this is ALWAYS the place we take them to. Try this place -- ask the servers for a recommendation.

I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant. For one, they have gluten-free options (although their chips are deep fried with other food that contains gluten-- there is the potential for cross-contamination with the them). My friend and I arrived fairly early, maybe around 4:45, and we were the first customers there. I would recommend coming here early, because it does have a tendency to get busy. By about 5:30 nearly every table was full. Their food is very flavorful, and I enjoyed that so much! Also, as other people have suggested, try out the specials. I did notice that my plate had an overabundance of shredded cabbage, but it was fresh, so I didn't mind too much. The service was great, and they were very helpful and especially patient when I asked about the ingredients in the food. The atmosphere is very relaxed, casual, and the music is very fun and chill. It is not a cheap restaurant--they serve real food here, but it is well-worth the cost if you want to tickle your tastebuds:)

This quite possibly could be the worst food I have ever eaten in my life. I don't know why everyone in Bellingham raves about this place. I ordered some form of chicken enchiladas and not only did it not have ANY taste, the tortillas were stale and hard. Disgusting. Never will I set foot there again.

Lovely place. Came after a recommendation from my yoga instructor and really enjoyed the evening. Ordered the half moon enchiladas with chicken and thought it was a really fulfilling dish without being overly heavy. No regrets type of food :) The only minor sticking point was the tortillas were a little hard. I am unsure if that is how blue corn tortillas typically are, or if there was some other issue. Overall I loved this place, and highly recommend it! Lovely food, lovely service, and I wish they did brunch!!

My first visit last night was very impressive...the special for the evening was a six-ounce filet of Sockeye salmon served with black beans and rice. The food was plated very nicely and the salmon was cooked to perfection, and not ruined with excess seasoning or sauce. All other parts of the meal were equally satisfying. a green salad with a rich and slightly oily dressing, wonderful pico de gallo with home made chips...and...the biggest surprise...a white Sangria made with Zinfandel and fresh raspberries...amazing, refreshing and totally tasty. We would have had dessert except that late in the meal the server brought us a basket of right-out-of-the-oven Sopapillas with a little bit of honey butter...that was dessert enough. Just one other point to make...some of the reviews here complain that this restaurant is not like what they "know" a Southwest or New Mexico restaurant is "supposed" to be. Wrong...what a restaurant is "supposed" to be is a place with tasty and fresh food, served in a pleasant atmosphere in a gracious fashion...and Pepper Sisters fills the bill all the way. I am looking forward to another visit the next time I'm in town. P,S, We had no reservation but were seated right away on Friday at six PM...but I can see that sometimes people will have to wait for a table.

If you go in thinking Vegetarian/southwest you should be fine. I have been there several times for one entree, it is a grilled eggplant dish. Now I have been there for over a span of several years and their eggplant dish is the same as always delicious. The place is still packed with happy customers.

Lots of vegetarian options, though their concept of "spicy" is a bit questionable. I had the Pinky Blue, which was delicious, but not spicy at all as far as I'm concerned. Wimpier pallets may think otherwise. I drank something called an apple ginger fizz, very tasty. Nice atmosphere. Got crowded fast on a Wednsday night, but they have a chill little lounge area to wait in.

  • Brandon B.

Let me take you through the Pepper Sisters experience. First, don't make reservations. Just show up. While you wait for your table, take a seat in the back and enjoy a beer or sangria while enjoying some chips and salsa (bring cash!) and if you are feeling saucy, scoot over to the ladies down the seat from you. They noticed your drink order and want to know more. The beer selection isn't varied, but usually there is a good option. But sangria is always a good fall back. Second, once you arrive to your table, look at the menu, and realize that every item sounds pretty amazing; make sure that your entree has posole. Don't know what that is? Well, go to wikipedia or google or what have you. I just know that it is good (okay, I know what posole is, but what fun is a review without a little exploration afterward?) Your entree choice doesn't include the side dish posole? Well hell...just order it as a replacement or as an extra. Third, and this is the big one - sopaipilla. Oh, and fourth. Honey Butter! These are the reason you came (not to knock the rest of the food choices). You will rarely find efficient service here, so if you are in a hurry, or have no patience, or just like to critique the world, then expect low scores in this area. I have experienced a waitress dropping the F bomb on a couple of occasions while taking my order, so fun times really. But the food more than makes up for it. Just make sure you arrived relaxed and with an open mind. And an appetite.

The sopapillas are addictive, the atmosphere bright and happy, and their food is decent. Mexican is a misnomer, this is more southwestern food. Sadly I hate hominy and they serve it as a side. I usually get extra black beans instead of the hominy. It's good but don't expect Mexican food.

  • Bob B.

One of Bellingham's Gems. Classifying this as Mexican food is a little restrictive. It is Mexican food with flair, flavor and creativity in a casual cool atmosphere that is uniquely Bellingham! I am a regular customer and love everything on the menu, but order from the specials board as often as not. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Ideal for cozy dates and small family outings, Pepper Sisters has never let me down...not once. I only wish they had their own website with the menu and daily specials to to make ordering out easier. Do that for me Pepper Sisters and I will give you my 5th star !!

Simply AWESOME mexican cuisine! Pepper Sisters' atmosphere is amazing as well. The interior is decorated in an art-deco style pueblo motif with lots of bright colors and local art. The service is great as is the sangria!

It's really on or off with this place. Sometimes the food is awesome and other times it is below par. But, it's still a great, cozy place to hang out with good friends. You can get wonderful drinks and there is a little living room area to sit down and chill out in. I love the desert motif with the pueblo and all the interesting color schemes. It makes me feel like I've left bellingham and that's a good thing in a small town!

I had read great reviews about the food here, bu with hit and miss service so I thought I'd decide for myself. It was about 7:30pm , on a Wednesday and although busy they cleared a table for our group of 4. However, while we were waiting another group of 4 came in and a different waitress came along and seated them at our table not realizing we had been waiting. Our waitress came over and explained it to the waitress who had seated them, but she shrugged and said oh well. We ended up having to wait ten more minutes for a table. It wasn't a huge deal, but a free order of Chips & salsa would have been a nice gesture for the mistake (you have to pay $3.50 extra for chips if you don't pay in cash). The food was delicious. The special that night was a vegetarian sweet potato tostada ($13.75). It was AMAZING and came with a side of beans and rice. My friend ordered a vegetarian baked burrito ($11.75) and it was superb as well! They also bring you these lightly fried, chewy flat breads with honey butter (free). Again, delicious! All in all, I highly recommend this place. I will definitely be returning, but I'm only giving 4 stars because I think it's cheap to not provide free chips and salsa, and the service could be a little better.

Get the chicken pesto quesadillas with corn tortillas. You won't be disappointed! I'm in town for 4 days, will eat here (at least) twice! It's that good.

I'm a big believer in checking reviews before I go anywhere. Trying new places to eat is a hobby, but not without stopping by Yelp for some reviews beforehand. Pepper Sisters had a lot of mixed reviews, but we decided to try it out. My fiance' and I have lived in Bellingham for over 2 years and pass by PS every other day so we were surprised we haven't eaten here yet. There's little parking available, so we parked on the street below. On a Saturday night after 7pm the place was full but not too busy. You can tell it's a pretty laid back environment when walking in. The decor is bright and colorful. There is one wall that is dimly lit with smaller tables and the other side is brightly lit with booths. Once we were seated with our menus and water, we weren't bothered again for a good 7 minutes or so...which I'd usually complain about but was fine because we had a hard time getting familiar with the menu. We're big Mexican food lovers, so their tex-mex style offerings were a little different. We started off with some chips and salsa which we really enjoyed and if you pay your meal with cash, you get chips and salsa free (usually priced at $3.25). We ended up ordering blue moon and garlic potato enchiladas and although they provide you with a lot of food that was pretty filling, we thought it was ok. We attempted to try something different than our usual safe bet (quesadillas) so maybe that's where we went wrong? The one thing we really enjoyed was the sopaipilla that came with our meal, a fried bread that's served with honey butter...so good! Aside from the fried pastry bread, I did appreciate that my water was filled up consistently which was nice since I didnt order any other beverage. Overall, the service was average, pretty laid back place and although we have no real complaints, we weren't blown away by either the food or service. We're glad we tried a new place, but we probably won't head back anytime soon unless they offer those sopaipillas as a to go item (they are yummy)!

It's in my top 5 Best restaurants in Bellingham. Consistently delicious, the waitresses always make me giggle and the sangria is perfect. I love the Pinky Blue but their fresh fish of the evening never fails. They are not afraid of a little heat which I love and I especially love that the staff will warn you if something has been kicked up a notch. Whenever I have out of town guests, it's one of the first places I take them.

This place just upsets me for some reason. It's not that it's bad food. It's because I'm forced to go here every time I'm in Bellingham by my girlfriend and her parents. They love it, but I'm not sure if her parents love it or just pretend to because their only daughter loves it. And, I'm not sure if my girlfriend loves it for the reasons you SHOULD love a restaurant (food, ambiance, service, etc) or if she just loves it because they used to take her here when she was a kid and it reminds her of not having to eat at home and being able to travel to the exotic Bellingham from Ferndale. It's a vicious cycle and I need to figure out a way to break it, for everyone's sake. It's not Mexican. I don't really know what it is. I usually get a burrito of some sort, and it's not like it's terrible, but it's just nothing to write home about. Most of the burrito ends up falling apart, all over my plate, mixing in with everything else that I've eaten half of and left because I see no point in finishing.

In a word: unbelievable. Pepper Sisters has the worst service in Bellingham for a restaurant of its type (locally-owned, sit-down table-service). I have observed that the wait-staff often does not acknowledge the customer waiting for a table. Another reviewer mentioned "hit or miss" with PS. I agree, but out of the three times I went there this year, I left twice after waiting for over ten minutes for a table with absolutely no acknowledgment. The other time our party was seated and we had some OK food. Charging for the chips and salsa was de classe, though. So in a word, unbelievable. Unbelievable that they are still in business after all these years.

I think I went to pepper sisters with an expectation of being utterly amazed. My friends kept warning me: "That is a HEALTHY kind of restaurant" which made me want to go there more. The food took FOREVER, it was pricey and not very authentic (which isn't exactly a criticism), it was just very different from what I expected. We were a little put-off by all the "rules" everywhere, I get annoyed when there are stupid, little notes posted all over the place telling you about additional charges, substitutions, etc... I think I would have liked pepper sisters better if 1.) I came with different friends, 2.) I was about 50 years old. I think it just isn't designed to appeal to 20 somethings. I will check back in 25 years :)

Food was great - loved the atmosphere. My husband had the hottest burrito of his life - he's still talking about it. P.S can I get a vat of the honey butter?! Yum!!

Amazing food ONLY if you like what you see. There are quite a few items on the menu but they all have very similar contents so if you don't like certain things the menu will be limited. I say this knowing that you WILL find at least one thing on the menu that you will LOVE with all of your heart and get every time you go. The bready-delishiousness that they bring with the honey butter is mind blowing and the deserts ARE a must have, so save room but beware once they are out of it they are out of it. I only give this a 4 star rating because if you come in without a reservation or have a party of less than 5 you might wait as long as 45 mins to get in but if you're not starving, it is def worth it. Also, if you are of drinking age you should try the Sangria.. It's heaven.

First of all, let me start by saying that I'm shocked that Pepper Sisters does not get better reviews on Yelp than it has. I've lived in Seattle for 10 years, but venture to B'ham to visit the folks at least once a month. I make my parents go either here or to Dos Padres every single time. Pepper Sisters, as mentioned in my Yelp profile, is my favorite restaurant of all time. Secondly, l'd like to mention that my 5 star rating is for the food - not the service. I'll elaborate later. As far as menu items go, I usually stick to the tried and true. If you like it hot, and I do mean hot, anything with the red chili sauce is right up your alley. The Burrito Fuego is a stewed pork burrito filled with hominy and cheddar, and it's AWESOME. And, as the most expensive item on the menu at $13, it's waaaaay worth it. Other favorite include the half moon enchilada (half green, half red) which is not your typical rolled up enchilada but more like layered tortillas.. The Pinky Blue is the bomb - chicken, jack cheese, SC, olives, chili sauce.. The sides are always either pinto beans (not refried!), brown rice, posole (hominy) and a cabbage salad with a dollop of some sort of thick ranch-like dressing. Yum. I can't say enough about the food here. Surprisingly inexpensive, fresh, healthy, tasty, and served hot... Complimentary sopapillas with honey butter at the end of the meal are just the icing on the cake. Yeah, so you have to pay for the chips and pico de gallo... Kinda lame, but really, the portions are so big that chips and salsa are highly unnecessary anyway. If you still want them, pay cash and chips are free... Onto the service: Generally average. Usually rushed but courteous. However, on my visit to PS just last night, it downright sucked. Our waitress, whom I've seen there many times over the years, was not friendly AT ALL. She did not know what the specials were or how they were served. When my dad asked her about them, she simple whipped out a card and read verbatem to us exactly what the special board said. Gee, thanks... That was helpful (not)... Her answer to just about every question was "I don't know" and her demeanor, annoyed glare, and nonverbal communication translated that into "I don't care". When asked about a certain dessert item, she sighed and said, "Do you really want me to describe it?" She seemed thoroughly annoyed when I asked her for more salsa, and even more so when I asked for another beer. I tried to get her attention several times as she walked by, even saying, "Pardon me"...and could tell she was purposely ignoring me as she looked at me through the corner of her eye. Lousy, lousy service. Lousy. And, let it be known that I'm not a picky little diva either. If you are willing to put up with a few dissatisfied employees with bad attitudes, I would highly recommend Pepper Sisters for a twist on the same ol' same ol'.. I would describe it as Mexican, Tex Mex or Southwestern... It's just Pepper Sisters. It's different. P.S... Don't expect an extensive beer or wine list. Yesterday they had a pale ale or an IPA, either house red or white, or Sangria. Cheers!

From what I hear this is a New Mexican restaurant. Both my husband and I grew up in NM, we've lived in Bellingham for 5 years and were always wary to actually go here. We finally decided to give it a try. We got some chips and "salsa" which was nothing more than tomatoes, onions and cilantro. Both of us went for the blue moon enchilada. Rolled blue corn tortillas filled with chicken, jack cheese and chevre with red or green chile. Not something that would be on the menu in NM but it sounded hopeful. We ordered it with green. The chile was very mild and didn't have any flavor to it. The sopapillas were small, greasy and chewy. A restaurant like this does well in Bellingham but would not survive in New Mexico. Being native New Mexicans we probably won't be back. We are green chile fanatics and will just stick to returning to NM every fall and jarring our own. Fiamma burger has good hatch green chile though!

Meh. I made reservations for 8 people earlier that day, but for some reason that means nothing to them because we still waited 15 minutes for our table. Then the service was just terrible, we were ignored. But I'm sure our waitress didn't care because they add a 10% tip to all groups over a certain number (can't remember). The food was bland, even though they tried to spice it up it just lacked flavor. I ate less then half of my plate, and I wasn't the only one even though we were all hungry. I strongly feel that part of the reason we were treated so poorly is because we were all college students. That alone is enough for me to not go back.

Daily specials on the chalkboard are imaginative. Hard to make up my mind but I chose the artichoke and ricotta stuffed filo pastry. Yummy! All entrees are served with a heavenly pastry called a sopasilla (?) It's a cloud-like puff of bread served with honey butter. It's got to be their signature.

I just came from the Pepper Sisters celebrating my friends Birthday. Let me say first that I love the Pepper Sisters and usually get a great meal and great service... But tonight was a different story. We sat down at 5 pm and we didn't get our dinner until 6 and that was after we had to ask. Our server was disinterested in us and didn't come back to check on us. Another waitress came and asked if we wanted desert, but said Oh I see you already have your check... to which I said well maybe we would have if we had been asked. When your paying $40.00 in these times it doesn't leave a good taste in your mouth to feel snubbed.

I normally don't write reviews. But seeing the lack luster reviews of one of my favorite restaurants I had to write to clarify and or defend what I see. So allow me to quickly say: 1. Pepper Sisters is listed as a Mexican restaurant. It's not. If you want hot plate Mexican, go to one of the other places listed for your refried beans. You won't get them here. This is southwestern or more Baja style food and some of the best I've ever had. 2. I noticed that many of the reviewers were from out of town. Pepper Sisters is a consistently good local's place. The service may be a little slower than you're used to in Seattle or bigger towns, but that's because when we're here, we chill out a little. So have a beer and relax, it's the Bellingham way. This is slow food. If you want fast food, go to Taco Bell. Of course, I'll make no apologies for bad service, but let someone know. 3. One of the marks, to me, of a great place, is really good, creative food, served consistently well. That's one thing that Pepper Sisters does very well. As one reviewer said, the menu never changes. This is (mostly) true. I've lived here over 7 years and it has hardly changed. But what they do,they do so well, who cares? What changes are the specials on the board. Last time I ate at Pepper Sisters my wife had a dish with a Mole' sauce that was out of this world. 4. Someone characterized the sopapillas as small, greasy and cold. Usually they're nuclear hot right out of the oven and to die for. They're our favorite part of the meal. Ask for hot ones, I'm sure they'd oblige. 5. If you get cold sops (above) or something's not to your liking, let them know. They've always been willing to make it right. As a locals place, I'd say that's why there's almost always a wait to get in any night of the week. And why they've been around for at least 8+ years. 6. We regularly take out of towners to this place. It's loved by all. We've never had an experience like the ones written about. So I too, was really surprised by the low reviews. In this day and age you don't stay in business serving crap food, the competition's just too tough. Not saying the reviewers experiences weren't valid, but perhaps they had an off night or your expectations were different than what they're there to deliver. I am not friends with the owners. I have nothing to gain by this review except that if you read this, go and have a great meal, they'll be around for a long time to come.

Awesome food, laid back friendly service, great local feel and fair prices all add up to making Pepper Sisters one of my favorite local places to eat. They have a great menu but I almost always order off the specials chalk board posted on the wall as you walk in. I love smelling the yummy grub cooking the minute I arrive. My taste buds are watering just thinking about it. Be sure to eat out on the deck in the summer time and always have dessert!

Pepper Sisters .... love the food but be ready for a wait. Do yourself a favor and have some sangria in the lounge. You won't be sorry.

Hands down my favorite restaurant. Very filling vegan options. The staff is friendly, courteous, and fast. They go above and beyond to make a great dining experience, even when very busy. Best time to go is right at 5pm or right before closing! Sangria on the deck is one of the quintessential Bellingham experiences.

Hubby and I went up to Bellingham after work on Friday, to see a friend play at a local winery. We got there with time to spare and decided to try one of the local restaurants. Pepper Sisters was recommended to us by the owner of the winery, so we gave it a try. My first impression was mixed. The decor was bright and eclectic and the wait staff had college town written all over them, so that was all good. However, there was a very strange smell in the air that I couldn't quite put my finger on that made me a bit uneasy. We were greeted promptly and asked to wait a bit while they cleared us a table. As I sat down at said table, I was welcomed by a wet bench that had been wiped down but not dried. That to me is tacky. The food that night? Mine was ok, I guess. I had the black bean burrito with chorizo. The burrito itself was tasty enough, but the side items I barely even touched (strange textured green salad, mushy hominy and some kind of brown rice). Hubby, Jason, ordered their special that night. It was a barley veggie burger with mushrooms. He's into the veggie burgers more than I am, but usually I find them to be edible. This one actually was hard to swallow. I just plain didn't like it. We sat there and tried to come up with a description of their food, because Tex-Mex just didn't cut it. The word we came up with was Mexi-Cali because of the vegetarian tendencies. I should also mention that the service was weird. The waitress we had was all up in our bubble and overly perky...annoying. After we ate, another waitress, I'll call her miss personality (she seemed like she was LOVING life), came to offer us a box and bring us the bill, and yet another one, without even acknowledging us, took the bill with card and brought it back to us. Yeah, just weird... The thing that really decided my vote on this place was how I felt afterwards. I was nursing the tums for hours! It did not fill me up in a good way. At first I thought it must have been the beans, but Jason was left feeling less than great after his meal too. Will I be giving them another shot in the future? No, it's just not worth it to me.

The food served here is not authentic south western except for the sopapillas. They are wonderful. You will have to ask the staff to bring you honey. Service isl slow and non caring. Room is very noisy.

great food, creative menu, plenty of vegetarian offerings. wasn't crazy about the tomatillo salsa, and find it odd that salsa & chips only costs you only if you don't have cash (when will Bellingham enter the 21st century?), yet they bring them to you automatically, as if they're free...but I digress. The sangria was tasty, the service was good, and the atmosphere was relaxing, colorful and perfect for a Saturday night. Definitely high up on my list of B'ham eateries.

I read the review for this place on Yelp before I first went in. I came in expecting interesting food and some sort of facist server squad. I've never seen any sight of bad service in the serveral time's I've been by. The only thing I could see people complaining about would be the time it takes for the meal, but I'm not that kind of complainer. This place rekindled my love of seasoned hominy, and their red chili sauce is AMAZING.

I love the pepper sisters. Not too many restaurants in bellingham make me excited actually, since I have also lived in Portland which may have some of the most exciting, dynamic, delicious restaurants in the world for one city. But the Pepper Sisters is a Bellingham classic. I love the vibrant, colorful decor. I love the music playing (many times it's Lucinda Williams). The servers are fun. In the summer, you can sit out on the deck and watch the sunset (now blocked by the apartment across the way, but still :) The food is good....big portions. I think the best bet is always the salmon entree....they cook salmon perfectly! It's delicious. All my friends order the cilantro pesto chicken quesadilla and swear by it. I prefer the salad upgrade to the cabbage-filled 'normal' salad that comes with most dishes. The complimentary sopaipillas with honeybutter are absolutely delicious, especially when they are piping hot, but they do make me so full (but it's worth it!) I always feel satisfied after eating here, if a bit too full! Plus, if you pay with cash, you get free chips and salsa!

I enjoy the food here. I'm kinda surprised it's listed under "Mexican" I'd say more veggie southwest, but whatever. It's good and it has always been good. The menu NEVER CHANGES. EVER. I've always had decent service (for Bellingham) The patio is quite nice in the summer.

Amazing! I have only been there once so this may not be that valid but during that visit, we had 20 people in our party and ever dish was amazing! The service was great and the food was totally unique, flavorful and enjoyable! We live in South Seattle and have even tried to coordinate a visit back. We were going by last week after a visit to BC but ended up there at lunch on Sunday and they are not open for lunch on Sunday's. Bummer!

One of my favorite Bellingham restaurants with a lot of vegetarian choices. The food is fresh and absolutely delicious. The food, service and open atmosphere are all great. Sometimes there's a bit of a wait on Thurs/Fri/Sat, but that's expected for a great place to eat!

Never see pork and posole anywhere and it was so good. Pork tender and tasty. Nice size portion. The food is well prepared and healthy. Only drawback is they could try to dress up the table a bit. Super cafeteria look which is kind of a downer.

What drew me to Pepper Sisters was that my first viewing of it was the back porch from the lane way. We didn't know the entrance was on the other side and thought this looked like a small independent operation. We were walking up the stairs and inside from the back, smelling the delicious food cooking and realizing what a great place we've found by accident! Pepper Sisters has a long history in Bellingham, but it was new to us. Second to the delicious smells, what struck me was the open brick, the colors of the very retro booths, the beautiful wood floors reflecting the light from the back, the open prep area and the friendly, warm greeting. The food is all home made from scratch, Southwest style. Corn tortillas, beans, Sopapilla, Enchiladas. Everything was really good. *For gluten free people like myself, I recommend doing what I did, ordering the chicken, with beans and rice and corn tortilla. Our options seem quite a bit limited.

I love it.... I don't live in Bellingham, nor does my mother - but we've both been to Pepper Sisters on different occasions. That says a lot about this spot! My sister lives in 'The Ham' and has raved about Pepper Sisters on numerous occasions. Knowing that my mother loved it (when they visited a few months back) I had to hop on that same bandwagon and make a trip there as well. Coming from Seattle (and my mother from San Francisco) where there are tons of options, lots of fabulous restaurants with creative foods, great ambiance, etc - we don't often think of Bellingham as a place where you can find anything to really parallel it. Sure there's La Fiama and Mallard's.. but Pepper Sisters really blew me away! The restaurant is unlike any other restaurant in Bellingham. It's in a great location, it's pretty large, it's wonderfully decorated, and the food is incredibly unique. Southwest flavors (up as far north as Canada) are certainly not what I expected when we walked in. Being that my sister is a vegetarian I worried that this place would be a little too green for me and that I wouldn't feel full with my meal. I chose a polenta dish and it was fabulous. Seasoning was great, it was piping hot and it was extremely filling! Service was pretty good (they were busy) and the sopapillas were unbelievable. In fact, they usually give these out for free with each meal and had forgotten. I felt like a jerk asking for them but when I did they immediately apologized, ran to the kitchen and prepared me a little to-go bag with them. They made for the perfect dessert! Every time I pay my sister a visit, I'll ask her to take me here.

Went here on a Sunday night for dinner with my husband and daughter. It was a lovely night and we sat out on the patio. Both the service and the food was good. There was an excellent choice of vegetarian options. I had the Rellnos stuffed with mashed potatoes. They were awesome. What was especially nice for me being GF, is that the breading was corn and not flour!

Very unique and interesting southwestern food. It's also fun, and tastes great. The one caveat with eating here is beware of the spicy options. There's a real lack of consistency in what they call "spicy" - often it's rather mild, though sometimes it's volcanic-ally over-the-top hot. Provided you don't mind that, the dishes are creative, tasty, and often have great flavors you won't find anywhere else north Portland...

Quick Take: * Fantastic sopapillas, average food overall First of all, I will say that I really dislike giving less-than-stellar reviews, and I had hoped to get back here for another try before writing this. However, it's been over a year and I haven't made it back (that tells you something right there) and with some of my favorite restaurants nearbye I realized I just don't think I will be making it back here. So... this review is based on a visit a year ago and I will edit it if I make it back in sometime soon! They have a really nice atmosphere, colorful interior, and pleasant service. The complimentary sopapillas are fantastic with their honey butter, and were my favorite part of the visit. I was there with 2 other people and we all excitedly looked over the menu and made our selections - everything sounded amazing, with lots of items that were seasonal, veggie, and sounded like they would be big on flavor, all the hallmarks of something I should love. When our dishes came we all happily dove in, we tried each others dishes, and then all looked at each other and agreed that everything was just "OK". None of the dishes were big on flavor, and if anything they were all rather heavy on the cumin (and I should probably mention that I am not a big fan of cumin). Not bad, by any means, but it did not live up to our expectations after everything sounded so amazing on the menu. And, "OK" would be fine with me if it weren't for the fact that it's not exactly cheap, and for the same dinner price there are many other places in town I would choose first. I know lots of people who rave about this place, but it just missed the mark for me. Maybe I'm not a TexMex type of girl? Maybe someone in the kitchen mistook the cumin for pepper when I was there? I still think I should give this place another chance, but time will tell whether I ever make it back in.

Pepper sisters- a local favorite. I can only give them three stars though. While I do personally love the pepper sisters- I only order one thing every time I go. This is the case with most of my friends- the menu contains all the same ingredients and I think the one item that fits your palate will make you want to come back here over and over again. With that- the service can be slow- we are talking 45 minutes before you get a table slow- if the restaurant is busy. Also this is TEX MEX not Mexican- so please understand that before going to the restaurant- if you want Mexican go to Mi Mexico. The sopapillas are my favorite part of the meal and are served with wonderful honey butter. I also recommend trying the specials they have never let me down. The atmosphere fun and hip. Oh and if you pay with cash you get free chips :)

Pepper Sisters was amazing when I went - and I keep on meaning to go back! I had their potato burrito, and this before I had Casa's potato burrito, I loved it. I've come to think of Bellingham as potato burrito central, all the restaurants in the area make a damn good one. I won't say Pepper Sisters' was the best, but it was the first I had and it was tasty. Their food was great. I loved the atmosphere there, and I can't wait to return!
