We are vegetarians and I used to miss the South Indian Idly, Dosa. But not anymore they are decent enough. Best part is that you get south and North Indian and also chat. So everybody can have whatever they want And the quantity is quite filling. We have so far had Idly/Dosa/Vada/Chola Batura and Thali and they wee really good. I find the staff really hospitable and they have always made us happy here. Comparing all other places we have had this deserved 5 stars for their effort. Seriously. I would love them to serve other chaat right at the table, will try the chaat next time.

You know, I feel funny giving this place a high rating. You see, I noticed that there are a fair amount of low reviews and they all come from people named Arun, Priya, and Ameet. So, I just imagine what people think when "Michael" posts an excited 4-star review. Riiiight, a good review from a clueless American. This is definitely going to be reliable! So, I'll tell you up front that my daughters hated the food here but I think it was more because the default spice is higher than their 3 and 1 year old taste buds could handle. However, my wife and I loved the stuff -- especially the channa batura. Out in Berkeley, there's this place called Vik's Chaat ( yelp.com/biz/viks-chaat-… ) that sells basically the same dish and people rave about it like it deserves a Michelin star. I'm telling you, the batura here is even better as it's thinner, lighter, and more lovely. If you've never had one, order it and blame me if you don't like it. So really, forget all those bitter native Indians (dots, not feathers) and trust this American (well, not real American -- son of recent Asian immigrants American) when I say that this place is delicious.

The ambiance was hardly relaxing or sophisticated. However, the place was full of happy families enjoying a Sunday lunch (when we went there), which is its own kind of draw. I'm not well-informed about the nuances of Indian cuisine, but it was all good, not too terribly hot for my palate, and absolutely the BEST selection I've ever seen - at any Indian buffet. It was a bonus in my book that it was vegetarian fare. They don't scrimp on the desserts, either, if that's what you're into. Minus - I felt pretty guilty using so many small styrofoam cups to hold the liquidy offerings. Plus - wait long enough and the manager will bring around fresh, hot potato dosas for everyone in your party. Again, a little bit busy as to atmosphere, but varied, tasty, and incredibly generous buffet options.

Weekend buffet was a little more than we wanted to spend for lunch, but it is totally worth it. Probably the best southern Indian buffet I have been to. But I haven't been to many as most are more Northern Indian style. Lots of dishes to try, all vegetarian. This may be a negative for meat eaters but a big plus for us. The food was very good with some dishes that were new to even us (we are veteran eaters of Indian food). Included in the buffet are several varieties of dessert, chai, mango lassis, and one dosa per person! Dosas aren't the best we've ever had, but they were fine. Because of the price and amount of food, this can only be an occasional treat. I wouldn't mind coming back and trying items off the regular menu.

Overall we feel food is somewhat authentic South Indian. Medium spice by default compare to other Indian restaurant (called Anjappar - a fire cracker spiced). I could have given 4 star to Udupi, but they need to improve on quality of serving and presentation. I think they have South Indian Buffet, we will try out in near future until then bye.

This was my first time here and because there's an Indian grocery store next door, a lot of people come here. For the food, the taste is not bad at all by Indian standards. The food quantity is sumptuous. Although they serve a buffet, we decided to order a la carte. The host is very cheerful although the overall ambience is not very fancy.

  • Sowmya S.

Very nice and cordial owners and staff. They even got us heated water when I told we don't want cold water coz my throat is not doing very well! Good quantities and reasonable/inexpensive prices. Now, about the Sunday buffet. If you are a vegetarian, it's going to be heaven for you! I love desserts so I had all of my favorites in the buffet. It's rare to find so many (gulab jamun AND Rasmalai AND halwa AND payasam AND more) desserts in one buffet. Although, I don't come here often since I need my protein!

  • Sahana M.

My sister and I decided to stop in for some chaat one night. We ordered two samosa chaats; they were delicious! Unfortunately, we had been waiting 25 minutes before receiving one order and then had to wait another 10 minutes before receiving the second. The restaurant didn't seem terribly busy, so maybe service is IST? Will probably come back here again, but with a book.

This is a hidden jewel in bellevue. We we supposed to go to another restaurant but ended up going to this place due to a long wait. The food here was hot amazing and very authentic. The service did not disappoint. Rates were reasonable too. The ambience was average but the food made up for the lack of there of. i Recommend the following- 1. Manchurian Idli 2. Chole Bhature. 3. Masala Dosa 4. Onion Uttapam Worth the time and money!

Worst indian food I have ever had in US. They are serving ready to eat curries bought from local Indian store. Pathetic ! Table clothes were smelling bad, it had patches of food remains all over. Dont waste your time and money here.

Went to get some tea at this place .. Tea was more costlier than any other restaurant in the area , got some mixed veg pakoda to go , after opening the box was surprised that there were not even 7 pokodas in the box which cost me $7.will not go again..

I went to this restaurant on the weekend as I am a vegeterian. I had high expectations. When they seated me to a table, the table was still dirty, they didn't do good job after the previous customer left. Food was not tasty as well. Jalebi were good. A bit overpriced compared to other Indian Buffet as well. I will definitely not give them another try.

Gives bad name to Udupi. The owner is not from Udupi, the chef is not from Udupi, dishes are not local to Udupi, doesn't taste like Udupi, perhaps nobody here even knows where Udupi is PERIOD

    (1)
  • Bam B.

Had the buffet. It's nice this place only has vegetarian food. Yet the buffet there wasn't much for $9.99. I didn't find any of buffet food like able. I might try ordering something but will skip the buffet.

  • Nikitha K.

Extremely dirty! Poor service and bad food. How is this place even in business?? I am from South India and even the worst food from any restaurant back home tastes better than this. Husband absolutely hates the place too and lost his patience with the servers. Avoid this place like the plague unless you want to catch it.

  • Nick P.

Their south indian food is good but other stuff is really lacking. Overall I feel it is a bit expensive for the type of food and service they are providing. The ambiance is very run down, though they have seemed to renovated a bit. I have tried their buffets, they are good but are a little bit on the expensive side. Could do better with bringing down the price even if it is at the expense of few choices.

  • Vyjayanthi R.

As far as South Indian food goes, Udupi is not excellent. That said, whenever I do have a dosa craving, their Paper Masala Dosa tastes pretty damn awesome! The rest of their food is reasonable as well although slightly heavy on oil/butter sometimes. Prices are good considering the generous portions ($10 -$12 per entree), from which you will most likely have left overs. One thing that really draws me to Udupi is the fact that the staff are always cheerful and efficient, even during rush hours. All in all, glad to have a place like Udupi nearby to satisfy the South Indian in me.

  • Chaitanya Y.

Been there for a weekend noon Buffet. Being a vegetarian, I loved the place. Food was very tasty and liked the selection of menu they offered for buffet. It was priced at $12.99. They have huge crowd for weekends and hence I would suggest more servers to be employed to meet the huge weekend demand. Must visit for weekend buffet.

  • Adwinnie B.

Great restaurant. Food is delicious, place is clean. The only problem would be staff. Not all of them are very good at English, and it was a little hard to make them understand me. I ordered a drink that never came. Besides, totally worth for the food.

    (4)
  • Dilip R.

Overpriced, not a great ambience. Looked very industrious. Ordinary service. Had to ask for water multiple times. Average fare. Spiceroute next door has much better decor, better food and lower price. Ordered Sambar Vada and the Vada tasted bitter. Thayir Vada was overcompensated with too much sugar in the yogurt. The only things they have going are it is vegetarian only, and many South Indians prefer that, and it's open late on the weekends. So ppl craving late night Indian food can grab a bite here.

  • Amit S.

i wished I could give negative stars to this place. This may just be the worst restaurant in the world. Horrid customer service, dirty beyond disgust and terrible, terrible food. Oily and tasteless. What an embarrassment. Yuck.

    (1)
  • Aprameya R.

Udipi is not epic. The best I can say is that it is good on occasion. The service can be temperamental depending on who your server is. The dosas and the vadas are definitely much better than the North indian items (the paneers and other such things). Infact, of the number of times I've been here in the last few years, all I've eaten is a Rava dosa. They do a competent job on those. Overall, the food is going to lie somewhere between mediocre and good.

    (3)
  • Anjana A.

Decent South Indian vegetarian food but nothing spectacular. Ambiance is very basic - just a room with tables and chairs. The lunch buffet is decent - mostly South Indian vegetarian items and they bring dosa to your table. The dinner is more of the same in a la carte format. The dosa is good, with a crisp crepe and a mildly spiced potato curry filling. The sambhar and chutney is average. They also serve chaat but I haven't tried it yet. For an average dosa this place is ok but a little on the pricey side. The only advantage is that Udipi is open until midnight on weekends so you can get a dosa at 11:30 pm. For better tasting dosa I prefer to go to Aahaar in Snoqualmie Ridge but it's a bit of a drive. Dakshin in Kirkland is preferable to this place for dosa and much more reasonable but they have hardly any seating space. Overall they get 3 stars for price vs. food. Service is average. Wish they had a better ambiance.

  • Singaravelan V.

The food here is pretty authentic south indian cuisine. I tried the Mysore special thaali which came with hot Medhu vada, and the thaali had plenty of dishes like Sambhar, Rasam, vegetables, curries, papad, Roti and Rice. There was also a chai included with the meal at the end. The food tasted very homemade and was not too spicy/oily like restaurant food. I also got to try the Chole Bhatura which was pretty huge serving size but it tasted good but the Vada pav from the chaat menu was a let down as it tasted more like a veggie burger. The place was intially not so crowded but as we were finishing up it got crowded and service was little bad as they took quite sometime to get our check. I was told not to expect great service from this place anyways.

  • Taylor Kush J.

Udupi, where have you been all my life. With perfect dosa just like mama use to make and nice simple ambiance makes me one happy Appu. It takes me back to waking up to the bombastic shouts of 'meen meen' rolling through the yawning streets. All this uncle needs is some chai and rusk with my morning paper and I'd be home. Make sure to follow your dinner up with the Mysore coffee (filter coffee), while not in the traditional metal cups, it still shines in a gritty flavorful way. Good service and nice people. - Taylor Ji

I've been here twice now and absolutely love all of the vegetarian options at the lunch buffet. It's in a bit of an odd location and feels like it could have been a strip mall church in another life. Wait, do they even have strip mall churches on this side of the state? The first time I went, they brought a plate of fresh naan as well as some kind of wrapped crispy pasty to our table. The former was good. The latter was great. The second time I went, we only got naan though. And they brought it after I was almost done with my meal. Bummer. I'd highly recommend the chana masala and any entree with paneer cheese. And put the tamarind chutney on everything. EVERYTHING!!

  • Amol B.

This is a good option for vegetarians with decent South Indian food. I visit this restaurant fairly often because their lunch option is reasonably light and healthy. Here are my notes hoping they will help. 1. Onion Rava Masala Dosa is very good. 2. Fresh Chikoo Share is excellent - I order mine with less sugar. 3. They will substitute Naan with Chapati on request. As I want to avoid all purpose flour and prefer whole wheat - home style Chapati is a great option. 4. When placing the order, it's great if Mamata or Prashant take your order.

We were looking for some solid South Indian vegetarian food, and overall we were not disappointed. The service was very gracious, and accommodating. We were there for the buffet, and the staff checked in often to make sure we were enjoying our food, and all set with water. Pros: Most of the dishes we were craving were very good to perfect: idly, masala dosai, vadai, sambar, chole (chick pea dish), coconut chutney. The flavors were very authentic. My husband's mother is a great cook of this food, and we were very pleased. Cons: some of the other vegetable dishes lacked flavor, but this was a small percentage of what we tried. We also felt like the experience would be greatly enhanced if they used stainless steel plates and cups rather than the more unwieldy white plates and Styrofoam cups. But this is a small thing. Overall, it was very good value, and we will return.

We go there regularly for the lunch buffet and love the selection of Vegan South Indian dishes. Usually Indian restaurants over kill with creamy buttery dishes but here the food is tasty but not heavy. I also love the idlis and dosas that come with the buffet.

  • Harini R.

The South Indian is surely not authentic! Surely not from udupi .. Have not tried the North Indian here. But guessing it should be good as its run by North Indians and is always crowded..

You can easily tell if a restaurant existed because it is passionate about their culinary or just there to make some money by visiting the restaurant. From my experience Udupi is here to make money. Let me explain: 1) It would be nice if an Indian restaurant can serve authentic Indian food. Some years ago there were no authentic Indian restaurants in Bellevue/Seattle area. Almost all of them cater for lunch time crowd with buffets. Now we have some authentic Indian (definition of 'authentic' may differ from person to person. But atleast my friends agree with this) restaurants like chaat n roll, Chaat house, Aahar in Snoqualmie. Try those and try this and you can see the difference. 2) This restaurant is primarily a south Indian restaurant. Tiffins are authentic south indian foods (eg: Idly, dosa, pongal etc). You have to eat them with different kinds of chutneys (coconut, ginger, karapodi etc) to get the authentic flavor. This is where Udupi fails. All you can get is a bland coconut chutney made from frozen coconut. If you want to taste authentic chutneys try Aahar in Snoqualme or restuarants in bay area like Saravana Bhavan or Tirupati Bhimas. 3) They don't care about quality of food. Last time I went to buffet here, they served me Dosa. It's part of the buffet. In their opinion they are giving Dosa for free. In my opinion it's part of the buffet. The Dosa is completely burnt. So, I've asked for another one (it's my favorite south Indian dish). They said sorry but refused to give new one. This shows that they are here to make pennies and not about quality. They were able to save an extra Dosa but lost few of their customers (our family). So, not sure if they got profited or lost by their behavior. Being said that. Their Kara Dosa is awesome and that's the only thing I miss by not going there.

They served us a cockroach as a side with rava masala dosa. I am now trying to find ways to make sure some food authority inspects their restaurant. Disgusting. Our first reaction was to jump out of our seats and call the manager. I should have taken a picture as proof. Manager did not let me take the picture. I still managed to get a picture. I will follow up.

Authentic South Indian vegetarian cuisine. My father-in-law is from Karnataka, India. After visiting several other Indian restaurants, and telling them that they don't have a clue how to cook, he decided that this is the only one for him, and we have to go every time he visits. The food is tasty, and the price is fair compared to other Indian restaurants. Even mom likes it. Note that the building and restaurant are a bit run down, but that is part of the charm. I recommend the lunch buffet as you can try all of their items, including fresh Dosa, and decide which are to your liking. I believe the lunch buffet was $12?

Food was good as always. Rasam vada was amazing. Couple of things for udipi guys to consider. Waiters should put on clean clothes , lady who served us had batter on her (Yeek). The table we seated on smelled bad and realized the floor below wasn't cleaned properly. Noticed dust in water. Recommend considering interior decoration improvements.

As a vegetarian, I really appreciate a place where I can order anything off of the menu with confidence. Bonus points to a restaurant where all of those veggie items are tasty, too! I've only ever been to Udupi's lunch buffet. From the pongal to the dal, tableside dosas to the chayote squash curry... I haven't been disappointed by any of the items on the menu. The ambiance here is mixed: there's often a line to get a table, and a line to pay. The lines are in the same place and tend to mingle, resulting in a pile of confusion by the front door. Once you're moved to your table and headed to the buffet, everything is in the clear! The items range from the typical biryani, channa, and paneer dishes to the aforementioned chayote and pongal. Good selection of pickle and chutney. There's always a nice array of desserts, too: halwa, rasmalai, gulab jamun, and kheer. These are very sweet and make for a special afternoon indulgence. The place usually is busy, and full of families or groups of friends. This means it's a good restaurant to bring children, but not necessarily best for a date. The room is long and has no decorations save for some flickering star lights on the far wall.

Super yummy Indian food with many Vegan food Items. The best part is that the Vegan dishes are labeled at lunch time. The coconut chutney was out of this world so good. So grateful for a second Vegan Restaurant in Bellevue.

This place has delicious food!!! Okay... not too much ambience. So what! I came here to eat delicious Indian food... and that's what I got! I went for the lunch buffet at about 1 PM. I was seated right away by a very nice woman who definitely didn't have a problem smiling. I never had to ask for my water to be refilled once, they were great with that. In addition, the server asked me if I wanted naan or roti with my meal. She brought all of it out, including a smaller dosa that I didn't even order which was absolutely delectable! Dessert was definitely a treat, they even had a big thermal carafe of full of chai! The food did not sit heavy in my gut like other Indian restaurants I've been too. I wasn't tasting it hours later either if you know what I mean. All in all... I am definitely going back for more. If you like Indian food and have not tried this place, you are definitely missing out in my opinion! Enjoy!!!!!

Shopping for Indian food articles in Bellevue always ends up with a dinner there. This time we decided to go to Udupi instead of Anjappar (very disappointed last time with the tortoise speed and indifference in service). A very good decision surely - we started with paneer pakoras (soft, not over fried, and delicious), channa bhatura (just like home, not intensely spiced up like most of the places) and a Jaipur paneer dosa (had to be amazing cos hubby didn't share with me at all :P). Though the place is very simple but who cares about ambiance when you get to gorge on your native land's dishes made in such an authentic homely manner. The service was good too and the manager was very attentive and friendly. So from next time onward, Bellevue shopping will end up here always :)

The best south Indian food I would have had. I went there for a saturday lunch buffet & was surprised to see the options. They have lot of variety of food to offer in buffet. Loved idli, dosa & medu vada. They were so delicious & fresh. Having unlimted Mango lassi & Masala tea on buffet was delighting & they were tasted good. This place is value for money, will definitely be going there again very soon.

Udupi is my son's favorite restaurant and had been for a couple of years now. He's currently five at the time of this review and he loves the buffet and dosa masala. I love this restaurant because I follow a vegan diet and this is the only Indian restaurant that I know of the takes the time to label all of the dishes on the menu and buffet as being vegan or not. I'm not South Indian but I have grown quite find of South Indian food mostly because Udupi has made it very accessible to me and they are very accommodating of my dietary restrictions. My family is also gluten free and they are easily able to meet that need as well. Aside from being accommodating and accessible, the food is delicious and there is often something new to try on the buffet line which is rather large and 100% vegetarian. The owners and managers are very nice and have made us feel like family practically since the first time we walked through the doors. I have a South Indian friend who was very surprised to find that the pongal on the buffet at Udupi was vegan. He was under the impression it could only be made well with ghee but he tried it and he was impressed with the taste. Personally, I enjoy the sambar, dosa masala, veg biryani and never pass up the beet poriyal when they have it.

South Indian Vegetarian Food So I was craving Dosa's -- these crisp, paper thin crepes stuffed with potatoes and served with chutneys. I really have a hard time finding them in Seattle, so Udipi popped up on Yelp, so I decided to give it a go. I walked in to a crowded restaurant, filled with Indian people - a great sign. We were seated at a table and told that we could go to the buffet - so we did. The plates were a little scattered and there was a pile of paper cups (instead of bowls) that you could use to get raita, chutneys, and sambar. There was a lot to choose from AND the server walked around with paper masala dosa's. I decided to forgo to the buffet and opted for the Rava Masala Dosa - one of my favorites and satisfied my craving. They also have carrot halwa, gulab jamun, ras malai, and other sweets. At the end, we were stuffed (and needed a nap!). Why 3 stars - I really wanted to give it four, but it needs a facelift and needs to be spruced up a bit. While the menu is the most comprehensive for south indian vegetarian, it really is an old school indian restaurant. People aren't going here for ambiance or service - they are going because of the food.

Mediocre food, but better of the worst places that serve south indian food in bellevue/seattle/redmond. If distance is not an issue, try Aahaar in snoqualmie for way better quality food

Udupi is a great place for me and my husband, since we are vegetarians, and love it for the variety of customization available here. Pros: Authentic south- Indian taste, $$ wise, and comfortable Cons: Inconsistent service ( sometimes they serve you great, sometimes you just wait for more than an hour before your order arrives , not so great ambience, not a place for formal dining. Overall, a nice meal hangout if you could be patient.

I love this place for the authentic vegetarian south indian food. Dosa,Idli, sambhar is just so delicious. Also have tried the lunch buffet over the weekend a couple of times and its all worth it.The number of items they offer and the price is just too good a combination.

Yet another stupid, terrible Indian restaurant. Ordered the thaali, realized it was a bad decision after having a spoon of each item. Food was absolutely garbage - same ol pre-made gravies, brittle 'rotis', oily/ heavy creamed appetizers items. The presentation was hideous- almost each cup in the thali had food sticking to the sides of the it - almost as if it was dipped in a big food container to scoop it out. Wanted to use the restroom and lady directed me towards the one outside (mall's restroom). No one came to check, no water refills. Overall disgusted by the entire experience. Never going back again. Fucking shit of a restaurant.

  • Simon B.

Authentic, wholesome and delicious. Lunch buffet ($9) has a great selection. "Must try" is the sambar with Dosa (included in buffet price). Dosa is like a French crepe, stuff it with the yellow potato dish, and pour a thin line of Sambar over it, and roll it like a burrito and ...mmm mmm . The yellow lentils and rice with mint chutney are addictive! If you're a vegetarian, or want to be one, this is a great place to get ideas of what you can make at home to liven up your veggie style. Almost all ingredients are available in well stocked Indian stores.

Iam sorry but this a really average place for Indian food. The service is friendly n polite but it lacked order. Went to try the buffet n a la carte on a Sunday afternoon. Buffet had a wide range of items but nothing stood apart. The good thing is that they serve fresh dosa at your table with the buffet service. I tried the veg utthapam n it was bland, thick n almost inedible. I had to leave more than half of it at the table. I will not gone back again. I think mayuri is still a better bet for south indian style food.

    (2)

Good south Indian food. The menu covers the typical south Indian fare that's seen in most parts of India. The decor is basic. The service is nothing to write home but the food is good!

  • Brent K.

Ok South Indian food, bad customer service, not clean feeling AND the hostess asked me for a tip. I got one plate of food and they said they were cleaning up. I didn't need to eat more but it sucks to be told you can't. Been to India...I get it...but Bellevue is not India.

    (1)
  • Alik W.

First off, there's really no place to get a dosa in the Seattle area other than these guys. Yes, Mayuri claims they'll try, but a place doing that much North Indian can't really do Southern right also. So, this review is limited to dosa and other specialties from that chunk of the menu because that's what I came here for. Dosa, idli, and vada are all excellently done. Perfectly evenly griddled/fried, crispy for things that should be, and pretty good sambar to go with. Some of their chutneys are a bit lackluster, but the tomato version is one of the best I've had. There is not much masala in a masala dosa, but it's so filling you won't *need* much. My wife always goes for channa bhatura; this is the first time I've met restaurant channas as good as my mother's recipe (or mine). Our daughter liked the bhatura and dosa to nibble on. The wait staff were very good with kids, and there were a lot of families here on a weekend dinner. Sweets at the chaat corner next door are... not that great. But I haven't found anywhere in Seattle or the suburbs that does proper Indian sweets. Punjab Sweets is the closest, and their stuff is sold in Apna Bazaar right next door. So, reasons why it's four stars and not five: - Chai is plain old bland chai, not masala chai. Put some elaichi in it! - Dosa masala needs a bit more kick to it; fairly bland. - Sambar needs some more veggies. (Flavor is good, though.) Even so, we will come back.

Worst service ever. We waited for more than 20 mins for dosa. Buffet items were not refilled properly. On top of that, none of the items taste good.

Dosas are pretty good here but not great. If we are in the mood for a dosa this is our go-to but its not that great (or bad).

Food was very good! My bf is from South India, it felt like his mom was cooking for us! Extremely tasty, no room for desert this time! We will be back as often as possible!

This is one place in the state which serves food which tastes like home cooked vegetarian food. We are regular visitors to this restaurant since last couple of months. They use less oil as compared to other restaurants and their dishes are made from fresh ingredients. Their coconut chutney is the best I have had in all the nine years I have lived here. We have tried their dosas, uttapam's and chole bhaturas apart from the idlis and chaat and none of the dishes have been disappointing so far. Do try out their special buffet on the weekends as they have a large number of food options which are awesome. Their coffee and tea also tastes amazing.

Food is good but worst service. They don't know how to serve food or even water. They just bring food plates and throw on your table as if they are serving free food and watch out when they serve water in the glass the will drop water on your dosa, chutney, sambar and even on your mobile. The worst of all is people who service there are with dough spills everywhere on their dress and smell different foods and not sure if their food is hygiene.

I attended Udupi for the first time yesterday evening. i loved the food. the service was good overall but a couple of caveats. i thought it was odd that even after everyone got their food boxed up - we had to ask for the check (like 10-15 minutes later) - i would think that would have been brought automatically. the staff was very friendly, i greatly enjoyed their hospitality. one major issue - i ordered a dish that was labeled as vegan. the sauce, while amazingly delicious - seemed too creamy. i asked about it and turns out the dish did contain cream - it was just labelled wrong on their menu (which they claim to be changing soon). personally, this wasn't a big deal to me at all but in the bigger picture - i think it's a very big deal to represent dishes properly and if someone orders a dish that's supposedly vegan - that is not - that the staff knows about, the person ordering the dish should be made aware of the same beforehand.

I go to this place for the dosas once a week. I like the food mostly. The price is a bit on the high side, as with any Indian restaurant. Pros: -Delicious dosas -Tasty bisibelibath -being open until 1 am on Fri / Sat Cons: -Slow service -long walk to the restroom

Never go on Friday/Saturday late nights. Water and plates are not clean and is food is not fresh. May be the waiters were tired but service was very slow. We had to wait for everything. From getting a table to pay the check.

I've gone here twice in the last two weeks. I'm new to south Indian food, and love it! Being a white guy from Minnesota, my heat tolerance isn't super high, but I tried their Special Rava Masala Dosa, and it was great! Also tried the udupi special spring Dosa, much cooler, and wonderful! The service is good, and the price is very good. Huge portions too!

Just came back from Udipi cafe and wanted to share my impressions. Being a food aficionado i visit quite a few places wherever i go. As i am in Bellevue for a couple of weeks i have been having dinner in restaurants around. Checked on Yelp that Udupi is having good reviews decided to make a stop. Since i had only a salad in the afternoon at office deli, i decided that i will have a south Indian thali. I was presented with two platters. One platter having one (Chapati or pulka whatever you want to call),a small bowl of rice(Basmati rice for a so called south indian thali) and about 4 quarter pieces of papad(Roasted to dark brown colour and i guess roasted at least a day before as they were chewy). The other platter is consisting of 9 small bowls. 2 bowls of rasam,2 bowls of sambar, one bowl of cabbage porial, one bowl of moong dal,one bowl of curds, one bowl of unknown curry and a bowl with two pieces of Jilebi(Are waah! Jilebi..Yumm) Now the Rasam: I dont need to give the recipe here as many of you know what rasam is and how much people like it as a soup with either rice or vada or anything, its a simple item with lot of flavour and tickles your taste buds. The Udipi is rasam was cooked a jiffy, i can clearly taste it that it was quickened, cooked in may be a minute or two by simple adding few spices to boing water and served instantly. The sambar was okay in taste but was stale, it was not fresh at all. Only thing was the Bread(roti or pula) i could eat with cabbage and ear a little rice with curds. So i kept the Jilebi's to the last as my son does by keeping his best items so that i can atleast have a satisfaction. I take a bite ,chew and spit it out aloud! The Jilebi is Stale and is stinking!@#!. I could never imagine the ending to my dinner.... All this for a bill of 14+dollars including tax. All i just want to say to Udipi cafe a big thank you, you really made me appreciate my wife's cooking :-) I suggest people to stay away from this place.....

I am in a hurry ,so checked in here and I got my order around 15 mins, the food is very delicious,I had Sambar IDLI and Dosa ...they were super good...I recommend this one if you are looking for some good light breakfast kind of food anytime in the day.

We love this place!! The spinach dosa is my favorite. It is gigantic, crispy around the edges, and filled with a delicious blend of yummy. The spinach adds a depth and spice to the masala dosa (which is also very good). The service is always friendly. We are usually the only non-Indians in the place. :)

I wish I had an option to give 0 stars. My husband and I used to love this place but never knew it is so unhygienic. They served us a cockroach below the rava masala dosa that we ordered. This place looks very filthy and dirty, I wonder how the kitchen would be. Tried to take a picture as a proof but the manager did not let us do it and snatched my plate instead. Very very unhygienic, I am never ever going to this place again.

I love the food - authentic, vegetarian South Indian food. I went there with my dear friend this afternoon and the place was closed. The owner gladly served us piping hot idlis and a yummy crisp masala dosala in the adjoining cafe even though these items are not on the cafe menu. The food, especially the South Indian items are really good. I recommend the dosas and the uthappam. The batter is pleasantly sour as it should be. Not bland like idlis, which are meant to have the bland batter. The buffet is good too, though I usually stick to the South Indian items. That said, the buffet usually has a spread and I appreciate they usually have at least one traditional Indian veggie outside the 'saag paneer' variety. The chilli bhajis are awesome, if you like super spicy food. As good as the food is, I also appreciate the friendly staff. They are just good people and try very hard to make their guests feel welcome and feel appreciated. If there's one thing I wish they would improve, it is their tea and coffee. I miss the cardamom-flavored tea that Udipi in Crossroads served free with their weekend buffet.

The place is calm lovely, with a quiet, simple and clean atmosphere. You feel like you are apart from the world a bit here... I want to rate it higher, as they appear to be trying hard to do this as a pure mission of peace and goodwill. I liked these people very much. I hope they take these comments in spirit of love. But this place for me, a fairly hungry big eater, is starvation rations. The yellow dal dish was tasty but watery and I could not get much actual dal on the plate let alone protein in my body. That's serious, as it's the main healthy source of protein there. Bread and potatoes do not contain fiber or much nutrition beyond empty calories. Legumes are key to vegetarian diet protein sources if you want good health. They need to provide for more robust customers, and I won't be visiting much without spinach (saag, please). Vegetarians need iron and other minerals in greens, spinach is good for that. The two soups, one spicy lentil, one plain were good-tasting, but exceedingly thin and watery, like a dozen lentils per cup. This meal certainly won't last me all afternoon for sure. I will be back to try again in a month or two.

This place has an amazing buffet spread. The quality of food and the service is commendable. We went to this place on a Sunday after a marathon and not the best to do after burning so many calories, but truly awesome call to go there. I usually judge a South Indian place after tasting their Sambar and Chutney it was spot on !! Must try place

Especially love the dosas and uttapam - so nice to be able get tasty south indian items like these. The lunch buffet is also good; has a nice selection of dishes that are often different than the typical dishes at most Indian restaurants in the area. I also really appreciate that this restaurant is all vegetarian. My husband and I eat here regularly and we have always had good service here; the staff is very polite.

I'm with Shashank - AVOID AVOID AVOID. And note - there's isn't pricing - anywhere. So, you are wondering - hmm - how much will this cost? Thinking it's lunch, I figured $7-9 - especially since it's vegetarian, so there isn't the cost of meat. Most Indian buffets run about that - and are loaded with many types of dishes. We were served only water, no offer of chai, lassi, anything - felt odd. So - here we go: First of all - Label the buffet - I'm a seasoned Indian cuisine eater - and well, I couldn't even guess what half the items were. There was one thing labeled - butter paneer - (I thought it was mutter...? At least that's what I have been eating for years) the rest of the entrees - step right up and guess what you are eating! Second - Spicing. Buffets are meant to be eaten by different people - so, when you have items so spicy (even the Riata was spicy - wth?) that we went through three glasses of water to get down the little bit we could eat - well, there is something wrong. Have the heat-adding spices on the side, or toned down - and I like some heat in my Indian, I could barely eat it. I mentioned to the waiter that it was so spicy - and he kind of laughed it off - silly white girl that I am, you know - and I heard numerous other (non-white) patrons mentioning how spicy it was, too. Then he told me to eat the sweets, as they were not spicy. Yeah, I want a boatload of sugar for lunch... that will be healthy. He then asked if I wanted more dosa - and before I could answer, said he would bring more and walked off - and yeah, the dosas he promised never came out. I did try the rice pudding - one bite - it was soupy, bland and almost underdone rice (how they managed that, I do not know - you cook that stuff for a long time). I gave up, as did my mother and my guy. Then it comes to paying - I had to stand at the register for about three minutes, where numerous workers walked by, ignoring me. Finally, I get to be rung up - and he says, "$39.57." I'm flabberghasted. Are you kidding me? $39.57 for three people at a LUNCH buffet? Where we maybe at a 1/4 cup of rice, tried to eat some curry, and where I was still hungry, because I couldn't eat the flaming heat and didn't want to fill up on sugar? I'm not one for giving one star reviews - I ususally can find something good at a place, not this one.

This is my go-to place when I have dosa / vada cravings. My favorite is the Special Rava Masala Dosa, made crispy. And the Vada sambhar is a favorite for times when I am not too hungry but still crave south Indian food! I tried the lunch buffet once and it's great value for money! Service is very friendly and polite, not just one or two of them, but the entire staff is courteous towards all customers. Even though I am hard core non-vegetarian, I find myself far too often at this place. And will keep doing so!

So basically this place is terrible!!!!!!! Don't even think about taking a chance with your health here I'm serious! Me and friends came here looking for some good chaat and chai which was a total disaster since the chai tasted like water with milk basically no flavor and I kept trying to add sugar to make it better. Next was the chaat which took 30mins to prepare really & cost $6.85 a bit overpriced dont you say?!! So after all that waiting we ended up with a handi of cholay (garbanzo beans) filled with oil I mean filled with oil where the yogurt was suppose with 1 smashed samosa underneath all that grease and to top it off they decided to add decorations to make it all better wow really way to cover the rest of garbage. And finally my other friend got kulfi which she was another BIG dissapointment so he gets it out of the freezer its in a cup and its all melted and weird foamish with like some type of fungus things on the lid omg we returned it asap and he apoogized so yeah thats my experience! Hope you take my advice and stay away from this scary, terrible, autrocious place that clearly doesn't care about you as a person!!! :)

Udupi is a surprising place to be found in a dingy, run-down strip mall that looks like the former location of a strip club. My husband and I decided to warm up here while escaping the snow in Seattle. We wanted dosas and I was obsessed with trying them after looking at all the photos of dosas on the web site. Since it was lunch time, we got convinced to try the lunch buffet for $11.99/person. I can't say for sure what specific food items were in the buffet since I am no South Indian food expert, but I didn't really like anything I ate. The food was luke warm at best and the breads extremely heavy. The desserts were too sweet as well. However, the unlimited dosas that were delivered to our table fresh from the kitchen were EXCELLENT. Thin, crispy, and slightly chewy.... the perfect consistency! I couldn't get enough. I wish I had opted out of the buffet option and had just gone for the dosas. There is always next time, though. So, 1 star for the dosas, 1 star for the unlimited delicious chai, and 1 star for the attentive and friendly service. I'll likely return for dinner sometime so that I can stuff my face with a ginormous dosa.

Good Southern Indian food is less prevalent than the Northern. We went on a Sunday for the lunch buffet when it opened at 11:30am. By the time we left around 12:30, the place was packed. This place is vegetarian and I generally like to have a few proteins. I didn't miss proteins at all! The veggies were so fresh! I especially loved the baby eggplants and the green beans with fresh mint. The dosas were made fresh and served by a waiter during the buffet hours. The dessert selection was great! While I'm not a huge fan of most Indian desserts, it was nice to have choices to sample. The food was comparable to what I had when I visited India. I will be back!

Udupi Cafe serves up the best South Indian food I've had outside of Bangalore and Chennai. I've always preferred Southern to Northern Indian food but never found a restaurant in the U.S. outside Sunnyvale-Milpidas in the SF Bay Area that served remotely authentic dishes. The dosas, methu vada, uttapam, sambar, etc. are all excellent but it is the main dishes where the chef (and he is a true chef) shines. Saag, bindhi, dahl, paneer, kofta, bhartha, channa, and avial were all as good as I can find in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu or Kerala. Leave behind the heavy creams of Northern Indian fare and discover the lighter, fresher, coconut- and yoghurt-based savory of Southern Indian cuisine. With the exception of Kerala, Southern India is predominantly veg so vegetarians and vegans will find plenty to satisfy and nourish them here. Serving portions are extremely generous and left-overs reheat beautifully. Sounds like Arun had a bad experience but don't let this stop you from having an authentic culinary experience from half way around the world.

I don't get how these guys stay in business. We get in after a tiring hike, order appetizers, and then later order the main dish and my appetizer comes after the main dish have arrived. I told the waiter that since the appetizer came in late, after I started having the main dish, that I did not want the appetizer anymore. Then two minutes later another person brings out the appetizer and tries to leave it on the table. I send it back again. Then my friend finds a piece of plastic packaging in her food. She took it out and ate the rest since she was really hungry and didn't want to wait. We called the guy who seemed to be the manager and he disappeared to the kitchen with a confused look. We never heard back, didn't care to, and just went about finishing off the rest of the food. After all this, I would expect them to remove at least the item with the plastic off the bill or not charge us anything at all for the shabby service and food. Well, we were charged for the whole thing and it just reinforced my decision to not return again. I know the place looks like they are on a shoestring budget, but this is just shabby, unprofessional, poor service / food.

I like the food in uduppi and have food from there often .then why am I giving them only 2 stars ? the reason is their to go food . their to go is always in aluminum foil . I wish they would change this . I know this is to keep the food warm . But here in Seattle its almost impossible to keep the food warm more than 30 mins ..at the max! . I think its not so safe and am always alarmed to eat to go food from there .. I keep thinking that is any aluminum piece going inside my food ?? I thought may be I was only person thinking so , but recently I came across lots of people who told me the same thing and thts the reason why they don't eat their to go food .. I wish they would change this as I know that more people will happily buy to go food from there ...Please give the to go food in boxes rather than aluminum foil . its a humble request or at least keep this as an option and am sure you will be surprised with the results thank you

I've been here a number of times since the place has opened, but I wanted to write a review after my last experience. I've never been for their lunch buffet. I always come for dinner, and have found the food to be consistently awesome, so my review only covers their dinner. The following are the dishes I had had which are consistently good and often better than anything else I've had in the area. Masala Dosa Southern Indian Thali Channa Batura My latest outing included the first two, both of which I have had before and have been consistently good, but this night, it was on. For those who has never had a Thali, it's basically a tray with a number of (about 10) different items. Everything, and I repeat, everything on the Thali was amazing. Next time I am in the mood for an Indian food feast I will be heading here.

This is a nasty restaurant where it will take like 45 minutes for these guys to even bring you your food. After that found a fly in my dosa which was nasty. I walked out of that place. These guys are shameless and unhygienic. I'm surprised they are still in business and are being closed by the health inspectors. I hate this place to the core and i dont think its worth even giving this place a try.

I am from Bangalore and I know first hand how tasty South Indian food can be when cooked well with fresh ingredients. This place is abysmal to say the least. Soggy dosas (looked like they had all purpose flour in the masala dosa we ordered in addition to some bland mashed potatoes ), badly fried vadas (brown on top and raw inside), thick and heavy pooris which looked like deep fried store bought chapathis - all made us question the manager if they really knew what they were serving. He just thrust the check and made a swift move. Not going back again for sure. I wonder if there is law somewhere to get back your hard earned money from people like these who serve food worth five dollars and make you part with fifty dollars.

We used to like the food here. But, we had a bad experience last night. We were waiting for about 20-25 minutes after being seated not for anyone to take the order, but to just start us off with water, which is bizarre. They don't pay attention to their customers.

Very authentic south Indian flavors. Eat at their weekend buffet. There were many different chutneys. The coconut chutney was made of fresh coconut and was delicious. The dosas were crisp and tasty. The curries were authentic an each tasted nothing like the other. The rice dishes were just perfect. Don't miss the bisibelebath and the pongal.

Went there with a group of 6 people and ordered 6 dishes that we shared. Tamarind rice, bise bele bath and gobi manchurian were really bad. The malabar adai, and 2 dosas were good. We also ordered 2 chaats and both were disappointing. Service was nice and friendly but weirdly they didnt have butter knives.

I'm witholding one star for one reason only... I want to go back, love it as much as the first time and write an update giving it the final star. We went for dinner and had great service and really, really good South Indian food. It's all veg, so don't look for meat here. I ordered the Thali, which was WAY more than I could eat. It came with a Vada and two curries first. Followed by several curries, rasam, and sambar with yogurt, rice, papad, and chappathi and payasa for dessert. I am not South Indian but my partner is. I have been working hard to learn the food and develop the proper tastes. Whether or not that has happened, I'm not certain, but I can say I loved every last bite. I tried to eat it all, but I just couldn't. It was beyond delicious. Keep in mind, this is South Indian food, which is quite different from North Indian. It's healthier, lighter and ever so good. Do try the thali. It's a great introduction to South Indian food if you haven't had it before. My partner had the Dosa, which was seriously so huge I couldn't believe my eyes. He, too, ate every bite :0 The service was good, friendly, efficient, and down to earth. It's the kind of place you feel you can go every day, know the staff, and just have a relaxed, home-cooked meal. We really enjoyed it and will be going back very, very often. When we do, I will update with the final star, which I am certain they will have no trouble earning. p.s. Looking forward to the Chaat Corner opening. It appeared to be under construction. Hurry Udupi. We need some great Chaat in Redmond.

Since my intial review, I have had lunch multiple times at Udupi cafe. The offer the most authentic south-indian items in the Seattle area. Almost always, they have home-style south-indian curries (both dry & gravy style), with unlimited dosas, chai & dessert. I am a huge fan of their south-indian curries, rasam & chai. Many of the items offered on the lunch buffet are vegan. Recently, they started offering south-indian style breakfast (including dosa, idli, vada, pongal, upma, coffee, tea, etc) between 8-11am everyday. AFAIK, this is the only place that offers Indian breakfast in the Seattle area. We did get a chance to try their breakfast once (pongal was awesome!). A few notes... - This is a vegetarian & vegan only restaurant. - Most of the items on their breakfast/lunch menu are very different than what you find in a typical Indian restaurant (they consist mostly of south-indian items) - The decor/interior is not classy

My husband and I went there last sunday for dinner with a very minimal expectation of normal hygienic south indian food. Firstly the serving time was more than usual. Secondly the quality of food was bad. Rasam was just salty water. Sambhar vada was ok. To our disappointment the oil used in the food was bad. We realized it within few bites and left the entire food as is and left after paying the bill. Both my husband and I felt little sick that night. I am not going back to this place again.

AVOID AVOID AVOID at all cost!! I could barely wait to write this review. Today i.e. on my bday, my friend and I went to Udupi cafe and I have to say, they made it memorable. Truly, indeed. Where do I begin with? Where do I end it? I feel obligated to dramatize this review a little bit, so please bare with me. We entered Udupi cafe expecting to savor some sumptuous dosas given that they pride in wide variety of dosas on their menu and also since the hotel is named after a south Indian cuisine, from where the dosa actually originated. As we entered, we were not greeted by smiling faces but instead were directed by their waiter, who was standing at a distant corner, pointing us to the tables we were to be seated with his hands. My first impression was certainly not good. Nevertheless, he came to the table serving water and asked for the order quite immediately. We ordered Alu bonda (appetizer) and two dosas. They took more than 30 mins to bring alu bonda followed by dosas. Before the order arrived, I had looked the dosas being served at the neighboring table and was really excited. But only when my order came through did I realize that the stuffing inside is SPICY as hell. I pride myself to be able to eat spicy food which is spicy enough to cause ulcers in other people. But this place blows it out of water. To make things worse, one napkin and a glass of water were just not enough to make me come back to a normal state. I had asked for napkin and the waiter wouldn't bring it. He wouldn't come to table or look at our faces. It took more than 10 mins to score a napkin and wipe the damn sweat off my face. That's when I decided to write this review. Dosas come with several dipping sauces (chutneys) and my favorite is the coconut chutney which is like a standard dipping included with dosa in any Udupi restaurant. The coconut chutney served here is a joke. Its watery, looked like a left-over and the quantity they served would fit on a table spoon. I was enraged and asked for more chutney. As expected, he woudn't bring it and had to ask for the second time after 10 mins. This is my experience on a weekday at 7.30 PM when there were only 2 or 3 other tables occupied. What can one expect on a weekend in a rush hour? When I saw the reviews for this place to be so good, I was amazed. But IMO, this is a crappy place with horrible service and average food. I left there with no tip and with a note on the back of the bill reading --"WORST SERVICE" Hopefully, they change their conduct with future customers but I'm never going back again.

My daughter and I were there to try their lunch buffet. What a disappointment!!! I had my high hope for "vegetarian" Indian food. The buffet stations are all lopsided, only three selections of main "curry" type of dish and two kinds of rice and Pacola. Plus all the food was way too spicy - I love spicy stuff, but I could not finish what I put on my plate. The dessert was way too sweet milky stuff with thin noodles. Not edible. AND both of us got violently sick after we got home. The help inspector should visit this place immediately. NOT RECOMMENDED.

  • Archana R.

The lunch buffet is great - the best sign of a good South Indian meal is falling asleep when you're done eating (come on, that's what all the carbs does to you)! They have a three / four course meal which is the kind you would probably find in South Indian weddings - mostly South Indian dishes with a few North Indian dishes. What's great here is their choice of vegetarian dishes, almost 20-30 dishes all vegetarian out of which probably atleast 15 would be vegan. So it's definitely not the place to go to if you're a carnivore who needs his/her share of meat everyday.

Great food. As a long time vegan, and also someone who has spent time in Southern India enjoying the local food, I am impressed. Fresh Dosa at a lunch buffet! Hard to beat.

Worst service ever...apparently they are so busy catering their few restaurant people that they forgot what the people in the chaat corner ordered..we ordered tea and some snacks and after making us wait for some 30min..we were asked to take coffee instead and even that wasn't served after waiting another 15 min...we left the place even though we paid in advance...worst service..surely they don't know how to make people visit them again...sheer waste.

Great Buffet for an AMAZING price. The variety and the taste make this place a winner. Everything was well cooked and tasted very fresh. The staff is customer friendly and responsive. This place has a lot of potential and can thrive if they continue acting like a new restaurant.

Great people really. Very courteous and welcoming. While some of the dishes are great, some others are not. In any case, they offer a great variety of food and the prices are better than most places nearby.

We'd been to this place for dinner. Being the first time,we didn't want to experiment with any exquisite dishes or north Indian dishes. We opted for plain old dosa, thinking it's hard to mess with a classic south Indian dish such as a dosa. Were we wrong!!! The sambar was watered down, lacking in flavor , aroma and taste. the dosas too wasn't great. With a name like Udupi cafe, they should at least make the bare minimum sambar well. Disappointing experience, will not go there again. And also, the prices were not any less.

Interestingly I found udupi cafe by mear chance, I was going to have lunch at "Spice Route" which to my surprise is located smack next door to udupi. After chequing out both buffets I made the quick decision to give udupi a try. I was not dissappointed the food was tastey and there was a good assorment of choices at lunch buffet. I only wish it was more spicey it seems a bit on the bland side. However it was still good and I love the fact that its 100% vegetarian. There is a udupi cafe close to where I live and it is very similar. If they offered brown rice on the buffet and made the food more spicy I would definetly give them fve stars. Other then that I will be returning again and again. If you go I suggest trying the lunch buffet lots of different items to try and you can really fill up.

I really loved the savory chat items they serve. They have opened the chat section recently and from my experience I can tell it is much better than the other chat places in Bellevue/Redmond. One time we really loved their khaman dhokla which we packed for later and I raved about it to everyone but it wasn't as good couple of other times I tried it after that. Their samosa chat and pav bhaji was also decent and definitely better than the other chat place, which had monopoly till now, I have been to.

Overall, not the best way to spend my money, even with splitting the bill. The na'an was surprisingly heavy and a bit doughy. We got a sampler plate, and found the food to be mediocre at best. One dish was heavily salted (which may or may not be normal), the rest were spicy but not very flavorful. It was like the dishes were lacking a certain depth of character. The atmosphere is very open and bright, so you can see what you are eating, but it also affords little feeling of intimacy. The service, however was fantastic. That said, no amount of good service will make me want to eat the luke warm food here again.

Well, the service was nice enough. That is the only thing I can say was good, though. The food was lukewarm, spicy with no depth, fairly flavorless, too salty, too greasy and all around not good. I love Indian food and can easily say this was the worst Indian food I have ever eaten.

I read all the reviews which were five stars and went to this restaurant and I was extremely disappointed. They have an authentic south Indian menu but not the taste. The food is so tasteless that I will never go to this place anymore. The one star I am giving for this cafe is for their dosas. The sambar is flavorless. None of the vegetables, even the dhal is cooked properly. They don't even have that much of a choice. The kootu was filled with two bowls of oil which is very uncommon. The potato in bajji was uncooked and they were tasteless. Not sure how they are still in business. No wonder it is not crowded.
