Unfortunately I can't comment on the food but I can on the restaurant as a whole. We made reservation as we drove into Woodstock VT for a summer weekend getaway. They took our name, number and our desired dining time and said they looked forward to seeing us. When we arrived 15 min early to a half empty restaurant we joked about even needing reservation. A min later we where told they couldn't find our reservation. They asked us to sit in a dirty bar inhabited by an obviously drunk local while they tried to accommodate us. Amazed and a confused we looked at each other and walked next door to a bustling new restaurant and where seated immediately. Night saved!!!

Excellent Caribbean food and we know because we are Cuban and Puerto Rican. The empanadas were so good and reminiscent of home-cooked meals. The fried yucca was fresh and soft. To make our evening even more special, chef David Diaz made us a special mofongo that was just like home's. The wait staff, Shannon and Robin were extremely pleasant and accommodating even though we showed up at exactly closing time. They did not rush us and established a nice conversation with us while we enjoyed a great meal. Don't miss this place if you are skiing locally

My new favorite restaurant. Slightly different in a delightful way. Each of the dishes that we have ordered have been so well prepared and delicious. I highly recommend the following Small plates: Island Seafood Ceviche, chicken wings, plantain crisps with fresh guac, and the plantain cups with pulled pork (which is filling and can be shared). Large plates are also excellent. The skirt steak, pork shank, salmon and scallops are unbelievable. All the Large plates are GLUTEN FREE. GF item are all labeled in the menu. As a celiac, this place is a god-send.

Trust the reviews about the terrible service. Stopped in because the reviews about the authentic Latino food was enticing. The food was good. My fiancé ordered a draft beer that was placed in front of him with an inch of foam. Bartender was an amateur and said it was a new keg. Second beer pour was even worse. When asked how our food was, she didn't even wait for a response. Bummer. We wouldn't go back and we just live down the road.

Delicious food! My wife had the pork shank and I went with the scallops. We were both extremely happy with both dishes. Definitely recommend this place!

My husband and I were traveling from the Boston area with friends that enjoy eating out as much as we do. Melaza was fabulous surprise find. The food was fantastic. The empanadas were the best that I've had in the states. The chef (David Diaz) was even willing to make a classic Puerto Rican dish for us that was not on the menu. Great food and great service. I wish that we lived close by.

3 letters: OMG. This is the real deal! Thank God for Chef David's wife, she's the reason we can experience this Puerto Rican Prodigy in VT! My Husband and I have been coming to Woodstock for the past 3 years as our winter/NYE getaway and we love it! This is the first (but certainly not the last!) time we ate at Melaza. We had been exceptionally wary of a "Caribbean bistro" on the main drag of Woodstock, VT. However, on our 3rd visit to Woodstock, this restaurant came highly recommended by fellow B&B guests (a fellow Colombian, so even more reliable) and we were with our Puerto Rican friends, so we said what the heck- when in Rome.... (Or from now on, every time we're in Woodstock!) So we came here with 4 Puerto Rican friends (2 of which were currently residing in PR), my husband and I are also no strangers to Latin food being from Latin America and Miami... And we were NOT disappointed at all. The food was the real deal. I had the arroz con pollo (I was skeptical- at best) and it was amazing! It was more like a pollo guisado (stewed chicken) but hey, I won't complain, it's one of my favorites things and it was done well. My friend got the scallops which were in a coconut/ mango sauce. Scallops can be tricky since it's all about the texture... She said they were perfect (and she's pretty picky). To start we had the tostones stuffed with shrimp (another one of my favorite things ever) and they definitely hit the spot! The staff and Chef David were so friendly and super warm and welcoming (we even had an impromptu photo shoot with the chef since it's not every day he has a group of Puerto Rican customers raving about his food!). Don't wait 3 years and miss out on 2 opportunities to eat there like we did, learn from our mistakes and enjoy good Latin food in VT.

Checked out the local scene on yelp as we were passing thru... decided based on that to come here. Great decision. .. we started with pei mussels, oh my!!! Plantains, unbelievable. & then garlic shrimp, oh boy! Life doesn't get any better than this...oh wait. Then we had desert. Chocolate torte.... incredible. The staff was super. .. can't wait to come back. Petah & Jeannie

Overpriced and average food topped off by terrible service this was easily the worst meal I had on a visit to Vermont. We arrived at 8pm and the waiter couldn't have been more eager to get us back out the door. We were asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu before we had finished our main course and the cheque arrived straight away. Most of the food appeared to have been precooked and heated - the chicken and coconut shrimp shrivelled within moments of being brought out of the kitchen. The yuca fries were excellent though. The mojitos were made using syrup too.

Shout out to Shannon for her warm welcome and enjoyable dinner conversation! Having arrived without a reservation, Shannon was quick to accommodate us in the bar area. We ordered drinks and were served salad and bread, and an infused oil dip soon after. Shannon's recommendations, vegetarian Spanish paella and pan-seared scallops were beautifully presented and spot on. We finished our meal off with the Caribbean chocolate volcano. More like mousse than traditional lava, however, worth every calorie.

The chef here really knows what he is doing. I judged this by how PERFECTLY the fish dishes were cooked. I had prawns with garlic for a starter, and salmon for the main. Cooking fish to perfection is never easy, but the chef could not have done a better job. It was absolutely delicious. Five stars to the chef for sure. I highly recommend.

Food was good but service was not. Took half an hour to get our order taken and then another half hour before our bottle of wine was brought out so we didn't even get our drinks much less out food for nearly an hour. Then our waiter poured water into my girlfriends half-filled wine glass. He apologized but didn't do anything to fix the mistake besides bring us a fresh empty wine glass. So not only did we get our food/wine very late, but then we had the wine we did get wasted. Understand it was busy but not an excuse for that kind of service. Too bad too because we actually really enjoyed the food itself. May come back again another time and update if the service is better.

This is a really great place. I had the pork shank and it was wonderful. I agree with the reviewers. The fried plantains were great too. The salad had a pomegranate dressing that I really liked. I had a lot of great meals in Woodstock, VT, but this was the best!

Service was great. The young man knew his stuff. Very attentive. I had the pork shank, full of flavor, practically fell off the bone. Of course you can't have Caribbean without fried plantain. My wife had the crab cakes, 95% crab, flaked apart, delicious. Tres leche was a great way to top it off.

When we lived here we came for dinner once a month. Now when we come to visit we try to squeeze in a dinner before we leave. This time it was as tasty as usual. I had a guavatini that was very sweet but good. We had the coconut shrimp -awesome; and the paella, fried rice balls with cheese in a flavorful tomato sauce. Also had the Jamaican jerk mahi mahi that was spicy and went nicely with the fried and tender plantains. My boyfriend, as usual, got the pork shank that is tender flavorful and falls off the bone. For dessert I had the chocolate volcano which came with Carmel sauce, whipped cream and a fresh strawberry. Friendly local vermont staff. As good as usual!

We came here for a dinner to end our weekend trip. We came in at 7:45 (they close at 8:30) We were greeted at the door by a rather snooty bar tender. The bar area was empty, and from the street you could see multiple open tables. The guy rolls his eyes and asks in a very condescending tone, "do you have a reservation? Let me see if we can find something." As if the place was booming and we were idiots for walking in. Obviously there were seats and we were promptly seated. The waitress was much more friendly, and seemed to be new. We tried the Yucca fries as an appetizer. They were fine but forgettable. I had the skirt stake with chimichurri salsa. The salsa was great and the steak was cooked properly. My date had the mahi mahi and thought it was 'ok'. They topped the fish with a micro green salad that was overly dressed with cloyingly sweet dressing. All in all the place was ok, but I think that they have room for improvement in service.
