Food was very good. They offered me the gluten-free pasta that they had available. The pesto was very light and fresh not to Oily. This is great for comfort food, not much of atmosphere. My experience was good overall except for the massive group of children running around our table yelling and screaming, I couldn't believe the owner would let something like this happen. I'm all for kids behaving well and particularly sitting at their own table.

I'd not eaten here for years, and my memories of my last meal are not favorable. But we wanted some basic, Italianate comfort food, delivered. I think that the best of our order was Joe's white clam sauce linguini. A generous portion. Good balance of flavors and elements. Second place was my side of sausage, which was really a generous sausage in a heaping pile of appealing red sauce. Third was my small antipasto. This is where they start to show their limitations. It was pre--sliced deli meats and pre-shredded mozzarella, with some uninspiring olives, all on a bed of iceberg lettuce that wasn't fresh. Oh, and the sort of grape tomatoes you can get year 'round. During the only month or so when you can get them fresh. The cheese-covered garlic bread, well, again. The assembly of commodity foodstuffs. Having said all that, there is a straightforward honesty to their food, and if that's what you want, this is a good place to get it.

Huge portions, cheap menu, great service, and happy tummies!! What else could you ask for?!? I ordered the linguini with broccoli and pesto sauce, and I couldn't be happier! It was delicious! My family also raved about the ziti Alfredo, baked ravioli and chicken Parmesan! Oh, and the garlic bread they serve with your entree is mouth watering! Soooo good! After a very pricey couple of traveling days, we sure did appreciate a budget friendly menu that catered to every taste bud in our family!

I'm sad to see so many negative reviews for Papa Franks. This is a go to restaurant for my husband and I. I like that it is unpretentious. I have never had a bad meal, and the prices are reasonable. I've had the lasagna many times and the eggplant parm. I really like the sauce here. The first time I came here I had just gone to Juniors the night before, and Papas food was much tastier! Can't wait to try the pizza.

Discovered Papa Frank's via a Yelp search for the best pizza near Colchester VT. Th3 Yelp recommendations were spot-on. Pizza was very good, especially the crust. We has a sausage pizza and a salad. Service was prompt and friendly. It is a neighborhood place with a pleasant ambiance. Prices are very reasonable. Highest recommendation.

Takeaway: Pizza is bomb, but get it to go. This is my go-to place for pizza. I will ALWAYS choose Papa Franks pizza over anything else. It's exactly how I want it to taste. I've also had their tiramisu, which is good. Unfortunately, I can't attest to anything else on the menu because I always want the pizza! That being said, Papa Franks is really more of a takeout place, in my opinion. I wouldn't recommend it as somewhere to sit down and eat. The tables and walls are always dirty when I eat there and that just kills my whole appetite. The service also leaves something to be desired, but isn't all that bad considering it's no high-end restaurant.

Homestyle Italian at a great price. Friendly staff. Often get the spaghetti, but pizza is good as well.

I walked into Papa Frank's Italian Restaurant for dinner knowing not to expect anything close to what I have eaten in Rome or any other upscale eatery.....and yet I can't help but only give this establishment two stars. Let's just get straight to the biggest negative, the food itself. The biggest gripe about the food comes from the amount the line cooks actually care about the dishes, which from what I could tell is very little. A good example of this came from our two orders of carbonara. We ordered two examples of this dish, both with peas for an extra 50 cents. The meals arrived and my dish had so few peas I could count them on both hands.....while the other persons had a main dish that appeared to be peas with carbonara on the side. ALSO, the carbonara is totally not carbonara. It is alfredo sauce (which tasted like it was from a jar) with bits of bacon tossed in. Sorry Papa Frank's, I understand the price point of the menu but it's really tough to defend you when entire items on the menu are misrepresented. A variety of entrees were ordered including examples of beef lasagna, chicken parmigiana, and fettuccine alfredo. But to be honest with you, it was hard to differentiate any of these dishes as they arrived. It is really hard to recommend changes to make things better as I know they are hitting right at their main demographics. The menu features mains no more expensive than $10, so it is easy to see why Papa Frank's is very popular with families and colleges in the area. To all my fellow Yelpers who disagree, I understand your point but in my opinion cheap food should not automatically grant extra stars onto the average of a restaurant. Taking everything into consideration....I can't help but think the best move would be looking elsewhere for an Italian or family dining experience, even if it means throwing in a few extra dollars.

As a jersey girl who is a little snobby in terms of Italian food, this place is comparable to places back home. The food servings are big and entrees come with garlic bread. I like their eggplant parm and pasta dishes. They offer gluten free options as well. Food delivery is amazing.

Dingy, cramped restaurants with about a decade's worth of dust and grime caked on the ceiling fan. Everything is drowned in cheese and grease. Gross.

  • Ashley M.

Generous portions, I'll give them that. Sauce a little on the sweet side for me (I could taste sugar). Service, while pleasant, was slow and inattentive. Half way through the meal we ordered an extra order of their garlic bread (very good, by the way!) our waitress forgot it so we had it at the end of the meal. I had the veal parm (a bit tough and stringy) and my boyfriend had the mushroom linguini with a side of meatballs. He described it as "adequate", but it was the right quantity for the right price. He needed to carb up before the Vermont Marathon.

Heard nothing but great things about the food here. I was not impressed with the Alfredo which I've never disliked, anywhere and also bummed that they didn't peel the skin off the eggplant which was sliced nice and thin though, that was good to see. The cannolis were awesome, they were out of tiramisu.

Let's get it out in the open right away -- this is not gourmet or upscale dining. It's a hole in the wall. My wife and I hit this place back 20 years ago when she was at UVM. Nice to find that it was still there and pretty much unchanged since then. Our family got a selection of pasta meals. All were very reasonable or large portions. Prices are just about as cheap as you can get for these amounts. Food was good. Nothing fancy, but not necessary with kids. Service was very friendly and reasonable despite a full house. It was a quaint hole in the wall that serves up an inexpensive meal for the family.

Went in on Friday night a little after 5. It was busy. We ordered a pepperoni calzone antipasto salad and chili. The order took 35 minutes. It was busy as I said but thats slow for what we ordered. My fiance has been going here for close to a decade and she said the food is how she remembered it and what she wanted. However the iceberg lettuce wasnt doing it for me. It wasnt bad but not exactly good either. The calzone was full of ricotta and pepperoni but was not cooked in the middle on top. The ends were cooked nicely and the bottom was cooked too. Chili was good and full of beef. All in all my fiance got she remembered and wanted and for the most part it did taste good. Prices are fair and the staff is friendly. Cooks did seem somewhat confused but that could be because it was busy.

I love how people dog this place on here comparing it to food they've had in Italy or NYC. Burlington is neither of those places and unless you're paying $30 for a plate of a few bites you aren't going to find something comparable to those places. What you will find at Papa Franks is a warm family atmosphere with huge portions for the price and stuff on the menu your kids will actually eat. The four stars I'm giving Papa Franks is for the overall experience. Sure the food isn't the best I've had but it isn't the worst. I'll continue to come here the few times a year I do. And so will all the others that pack the place on a regular basis.

Ick. Chick parm crust was mush. Tasted freezer burned. The chicken was as tough as nails as if it was microwaved. The crust was raw. Ravioli was raw and middle and one big hunk of pasta glued together. The food was terrible. Tried to quietly talk to manager/owner about the food issues and his answer is we make chicken all the time. The manager said he would take off the indelible items off bill. Bill came and only one item removed. Went back to talk to manager and he was no where to be found and made some poor young man handle the situation . Terrible food and treatment. Please save yourself and go elsewhere. Kitchen nightmare.

Amazing food! Gluten free pesto was amazing as was the stuffed shells. Best tomato sauce I have ever had! Service was very friendly and quick!

I went here knowing not to expect much, but I still ended up pretty disappointed, mainly by the service. The place itself is really cramped and you have practically walk over other people who are eating to walk to the table or bathroom, but not a huge deal. The service was pretty bad, our waitress acted like we were more of an inconvenience than anything. We ordered a couple plates of spagetti and a basket of cheese bread sticks. The "basket of cheese bread sticks" is half a sub roll with cheese melted on it, not even cut up. At least it was cheap! The food took a really long time, for only being spagetti and it not being busy. We had another person join us a little late, so their food took longer as expected but this is where the bad service really began to shine. With empty glasses and before the food came for the late arriver AND before the rest of the table was done eating, she brought us the checks! We were planning on getting more to drink and, you know hoping to actually get the food we ordered before being presented the check! I was also a little put-off that there was no free-refills on soda, but that was more of an added on annoyance with the horrible service. The food itself was ok, but not worth the bad service.

Papa Franks is one of my absolute go to places to visit every time im home in VT. It's the epitome of good, cheap, home style italian food. The service is fast, the food is great and it's an awesome place to go with your whole family. Not to mention my little brother works here and he makes the best cheesy garlic bread ever!

  • Daniel B.

Papa Frank's is nothing special. There's generally a wait for a table (I'm not sure why). The service is mediocre. The food is boring. The pasta is bland. The decor is lacking. Winooski is growing, and there are some great restaurants moving in. Unless you're in the mood for boring, run-of-the-mill, Italian food in a bland setting, try out something else.

Papa Frank's last night was a major let down. The service was awful and the food left a lot to be desired. We had been driving for a bit and we wanted a nice warm sit down dinner. So we had not been to Papa Franks in some time. The last time we came it was alright. But last night ended up being a nightmare of a dinner in so many ways that we may never return. As we walked in I had asked for a table in the warmest part of the restaurant! Guess what they gave us? The table right next to the door. It was drafty as well. Our waiter came over and took our drink & food orders. Great right? Well that's what I thought. Our food took forever to come out! Plus the waiter never even came back over after we got our food to see how things came out. So this also meant no drink refills...HUGE problem for me. Lets be honest here folks its the only thing the wait staff is in full control over. Finally we finished our dinner and he came over. Didn't ask if we wanted dessert or refills or anything. So we just asked for our check. While he took 20 minutes to get our check the owner/manager (Guessing here) came over to offer dessert after the fact. At this point we had enough and just wanted to leave. So we did. The food here is pretty tasteless as well. I got the chicken parm and it tasted like the sauce was from a can or jar. The sauce was just watered down and was pretty bad. The girlfriend had stuffed shells and I had no interest in really tasting it. She said it was "Ehh" when I asked her. So it was a let down. The price for our check came out to be around $20 and some change. While checking out I had to go to the front to and one of the kids asked how dinner was and I said "Slow" and I get a reply with "It happens"....I was speechless to say the least. I'd also like to point out that I do not have that many 1 star ratings. If I could I would have just given them 0. NOTHING went right for them and I don't understand why. They have plenty of staff, it was not busy and we got basic dishes with no changes. So really there was no reason for the lack of service and the tasteless food. We came in hungry! And we left disappointed and still hungry!

You can't get more down home style than this. Be prepared for a LOCAL experience and enjoy. Try to get a seat in the back if you're claustrophobic, because the line forms at the door and its such a ridiculously tight place where people are coming and going and eating and waitresses are waitressing and babies crying.. It's so cheap I can't stand it. Ordering breakfast in Burlington will cost a family more than dinner and drinks here. The food is nothing special and the serving plates, cups, silverware napkins are the most basic possible. It smells great and fills you up fine and it's a fun place to go if you know what to expect.

This may be an Italian restaurant that serves Italian dishes but they don't serve Italian food. Absolutely gross. Our food was a sloppy mess. Everything was drowned in pasta sauce. We ordered a side of meatballs - they gave us one meatball cut in half, with a few random pieces of chicken in there as well(?). The eggplant parm was cold in the middle. The garlic bread was a sub roll that looked like it had been sat on. With the Winooski restaurant scene blowing up with amazing food right around the corner from Papa Franks, I wouldn't be surprised to see this restaurant go out of business. I wouldn't be disappointed either. Regardless, I won't eat there again.

Papa Frank's is a decent Italian restaurant. It's cozy and warm - with standard pasta dishes and pizza. They serve beer and wine (no hard liquor). When we are craving comfort food and don't want to cook - we go here. However, it's not the best Italian food out there and does not hold up if you are expecting this place to taste like a five-star Italian restaurant. I do enjoy their pizza but the pasta is quite bland. I ordered a penne with tomato and garlic and it literally was a bland tomato sauce with no spices with mushy garlic gloves. I guess I expected a little more oomph. Also - their sandwiches are really messy and don't hold together well. Although the waiters are nice, every time we have come here we never seem to get water even though we ask several times! No idea why...it's not malicious just seems like the waiters get flaky.

As stated by other reviewers, this is not the place to go for a fancy schmancy gourmet meal. But if you want something cheap, quick, consistent, and comforting, Papa Frank's is it. I went out here with the boyfriend and his dad the other night and the three of us got linguini with broccoli alfredo, tortellini with meat sauce, and lasagna. Hot and tasty with a big enough portion for leftovers. The garlic bread was simple but tasty and they happily brought us a second helping.

As an Italian-American who was raised in the New York City area and went to college In Burlington, I can firmly attest to the shortcomings of Vermont Italian food in general. I had high hopes for Papa Frank's, a small Italian family restaurant that a few friends swore by. I was once again disappointed. The calzone: My date and I ordered a pepperoni calzone, simple enough. The result was an overly salted, doughy nightmare with very little cheese to speak of. The marinara sauce was watery and reminded me more of ketchup than of pizza sauce. Spaghetti and meatballs: The main dish for my date and I was an order of spaghetti and meatballs. It seemed like a safe order, hard to screw up provided the ingredients didn't come from the local Price Chopper. This was probably the most disappointing dish of all. The sauce was, again, poor and the meatballs tough and dry. It gave the impression that the meatballs originated from a can, were heated up in the microwave and tossed into the pasta. The pasta was also stiff and not thoroughly cooked. For those considering ordering spaghetti and meatballs at Papa Frank's, I would strongly recommend Chef Boyardee before spending your money here. Garlic bread: mediocre, not bad but certainly not worth the rest of the food. If you are truly looking for decent Italian food in the Chittenden County area I would suggest going to Three Tomatoes or Trattoria Delia.

Papa Frank's is a classic neighborhood Italian restaurant tucked into a corner in Winooski. My roommate recommended it to me after he went on a date here. When I asked him how it was, he replied that it was cheap and good (in that order, with heavy emphasis on the cheap). It made for a good laugh, but it also got me curious to see how good (and cheap) this place really is. After running over a snow-covered median in the middle of Winooski on a snowy winter night, we finally arrived in one piece. The decor and atmosphere makes it seem like this restaurant comes straight out of an 80's movie. In fact, this place opened in 1984 and perhaps it never left that year. You have your typical checkered table cloths and photos of Italian baseball greats lining the walls. But, it felt homey and cozy to some extent. Having read some of the reviews for this place, I just had to try their pizza. The prices are extraordinarily cheap for the quantity of food that you get. I chose to get a sausage and mushroom Sicilian style pizza for $14.95. I usually can finish a whole pizza by myself, but the waitress assumed that I would have a lot leftover to take home. I was a bit puzzled by how large the pizza would actually be. When it actually came out, it was a huge 14" by 20" rectangular pizza. I was surprised by the dough, which came out fluffy on the inside and slightly crispy on the outer edges. The sausage was sliced lengthwise and overall the pizza was great, especially for its price. My only criticism was that there should have been more topping on the pizza. I ended up finishing two slices and took the rest home. It fed me for the next couple of days. I have to return to try some of their NY style pizza. As for their pasta dishes, the pasta pesto with chicken was decent. The pesto was great, but the chicken was a little bit dried despite being fried (or maybe it was baked with bread crumbs). Dessert is also very cheap so we ended up getting a piece of tiramisu and a cannoli. The tiramisu was subpar and I've had much better ones before. But, the cannoli was great with one end dipped in sprinkles and the other dipped with chocolate chips. Not the classiest presentation, but it was fun. The shell was nice and crunchy and flakey and the filling was thick and creamy with the right consistency. If you're on a tight budget, but looking for a filling meal, Papa Frank's is a great place to try. I just realized they have 10% off coupons on their website for an even better deal!

I miss Papa Frank's. When I lived in Burlington this was a great place to go for "American-style" Italian food. It's nothing fancy, just a great little hole in the wall pizza joint with comfort food. I know it's hard to compare Papa Frank's when you've had Italian food in the bigger East Coast cities. My advice to you, don't. Just enjoy the restaurant for what it is, you will like it.

This place is epic. Probably the best value in the Burlington area if not Vermont in general. The fact that they offer coupons and discounts to make their already dirt cheap dishes even cheaper is just awesome. Great portions, great service, great pizza, great beer deals. This place isn't going to win any culinary competitions but it is the best their is for what it is and I love it every time. A Winooski staple. Love it!!

On that Saturday in July, wife and I had a mission: Eat as much good food as we could to prepare for a 6 hour mountain bike race the next day. Mid day found us at the downtown Farmers' Market, which we ate our way through like a couple of locusts. Dinner could only be Papa Frank's. As always, the food was great. Is it like eating Italian in the North End (of Boston, not Burlington)? No. Papa Frank's always satisfies though (the chix and broc pesto over penne was terrific that night); you look around your and all the diners (and they get every demographic) are happy; the staff is happy; the food makes me happy, and the bill for two with tip is about 40 bucks. And we both rode really well in the race, due in no small part to PFs.

If there were a way to give this place 0 stars...I would. For those of you who have left the area and are writing with fond memories of this place...you should see what has happened to it now. My boyfriend and I ordered take out from Papa Frank's last night. He had the Veal Parm sub and I had the Eggplant Parmigiana. The veal was at best freezer burned, if not dangerously old. You should be able to cut through veal with a fork, but we had to get out a steak knife to get through this. After one bite he decided he would rather not risk food poisoning and threw it out. My eggplant parmigiana was a mushy, tasteless mess. The sauce tasted mostly of ketchup and tomato paste with no herbs or seasoning. The pasta was at least cooked properly, but was inedible drenched in that sauce. The 'garlic bread' was nothing more than a hot dog roll with some oil and parsley on it and toasted. That was tasteless as well. My boyfriend is not from this area and I had told him that Papa Frank's used to be a fun college hang out and the food was good, basic Italian fare. I was completely embarrassed. This was not the Papa Frank's that I remember from years ago. What happened? A change in ownership? Or has this place simply been there too long? Either way, avoid this place at all cost. If you are craving Italian food go to Olive Garden. Their food may come out of a can, but at least it's edible.

I can remember going to Papa Franks as a kid and sucking down some cokes and a few slices. Its the place I took wife on our first date 12 years ago. Papa Franks does plain, simple, tasty Italian, and has done it forever. Its not going to blow your socks off, but for portion size and price I don't think you can beat it anywhere in Chittenden county. Go to meal: calzone with mushroom and sausage, and a microbrew...

This is our choice for a quick, inexpensive dinner date or casual family dining. You can feed a family of six, get two carafes of wine, and walk out of here spending under $100. Food is between okay and good, but that's great since we are not expecting to be wow'd in the first place.

Papa Frank's is a good mom and pop Italian joint tucked away from the circle when you enter Winooski. My review may be bias since I literally live up the street. I burn probably like 10 calories walking to and from this place. Its a nice restaurant that does get packed on Fri nights and weekend nights, but the food is really good and cheap. The garlic bread is tasty. I usually order the special of the day. When I crave Italian, I just go down to my Papa Franks. I've had the pizza here before and its really good too. This is probably going to be on your list of places to take someone on a date. facts.randomhistory.com/… "60. Italian food is one of the most popular restaurants for a first date." Well there you go.

I've never really been a big fan of Papa Franks but it's been a go-to if nothing else is available, open or within price range that night. Last night was one of those nights. The pizza, in the past, was never really anything special. It's a pie with marinara, cheese and some meats strewn on it. OK. The pasta is also passable. My wife had the lasagna last night and it tasted fine but I've had better at Bove's and McKee's. I just went with the small chef's salad which really had nothing exciting about it: some wet lettuce, chopped ham, 2 pieces of chicken, a few mushed olives and a whole load of grated mozzarella. My biggest disappointment with Papa Frank's is his decor and sloppy service. I actually spent some time looking around the place last night to look for something that made the bland food seem OK if it's served in a comfortable, interesting place. Frank seemed to not care about this feature. There was a slight griminess with the dining area: under-vacuumed, dusty light fixtures, wet spots on the tables. I even searched for something quirky or fun about the decor, all I found was: a pointless awning over my head (indoors), a shelf on the distant wall with forgotten items that I assume meant to pass as "antiques", dust-covered fans hanging in the entranceway connected by a low-hanging power cord. My favorite was staring at a crooked framed photo of King Kong taken from the classic film of the same name (?? huh??). It's like someone took a bunch of leftover stuff from a fraternity house or retirement home and threw it into the interior without any thought of "theme". The service isn't anything great, last night was a good example of an over-loaded waitress who just didn't know what to do with us. I understand, it happens, but I don't ever recall getting great service at this restaurant. C'mon Papa, I know you could do better here.

We yelped this while we stood outside. This was a last resort as it was dinner time and other places we were familiar with were booked. Was hoping we had found a good/great hole in the wall. Well, we left befuddled at the positive reviews this place has over food quality. Garlic bread lacked garlic and was coated in tasteless cheese. Cheap sub roll bread. My lasagna was tasteless mush. The ricotta was pasty mush and the noodles were hard dry tasteless. Few bites and I sat back. My body deserves better. My daughters pesto chicken had dry tasteless pesto in crappy oil. The chicken was freezer burn dry and was cooked some time ago. Likely from a frozen precooked package. My sons chicken parmagin was made from cheap frozen cutlets. Cheap prices but shouldn't be this bad. If you have any sense of good food I'd walk by this place. Yelp rating here is a disappointment.

Don't listen to the haters. OK if you're looking for fancy Italian food, or even food you would want to find in the North End of Boston or Little Italy, you're not going to find it here. Even though it's in the Burlington area, it's still Vermont. But, what Papa F does, he does well. That's big portions of Italian comfort food. Comparing Papa F to Trattoria or Three Tomatoes is apples and oranges -- they're fundamentally different. I would recommend any of the usual suspects...pizza, pasta and meatballs, lasagna, manicotti, etc. etc. Also garlic bread (with or without cheese) is a must. If you want to push culinary boundaries, Vermont and Papa F is probably not your scene. If you just want decent portions of good food, definitely give it a visit.

Papa Frank's is home to hearty, good-tasting, and relatively inexpensive Italian cuisine-- why isn't there a place like this in Burlington proper? Well, okay, I guess there's Bove's, but...anyway, this is a great casual place to go for dinner with friends, family, or friends and family. I love their ravioli. And thank god there's SOME place around here where you can get a halfway decent cannoli!

GREAT family Italian. Small place, parking an issue, but good food. I had the Chicken parmigiana and broccoli. The pizza is awesome as well.

Growing up this was the favorite restaurant of my family. I have had supposedly the best pizza in NYC but nothing compares to the combination of NY style with their sauce and cheese. It's one of the best. Their portions are huge and the prices are still affordable. Good luck trying to get a table on Friday or Saturday night but it's worth the wait standing in the middle of the restaurant huddled together to keep out the cold of the door. Every time I travel home to see my parents even if it's for a day, our one restaurant destination is Papa Franks.

Was there yesterday. Damn fine, fine, fine pizza. Extra delicious in fact. Just the right amount of sauce, cheese and the crust was just right. We also had cream of chicken soup and chili. The chili was really good, not meat sauce with beans, like some places. Not too spicy and just good all around. Cream of chicken soup = microwaved = middle of the bowl was cold from not being stirred and soup was clumpy. Sent to be reheated and it was fine. I can't really complain as it was 9pm and they close at 10, no biggie. Floor, as has been mentioned, is at some kind of freakish banana angle. It was like a scene from Gulliver's Travels in the corner. Really, really weird. Now, we'll get down to the deal breaker. We were starving and to be truthful, we went looking for Three Brothers pizza, as it was recommended. I found it at 8:50pm but the chairs were on the tables so they were obviously closing so I didn't bother going in. I found this place on my GPS as the closest place. It is without a doubt, one of the DIRTIEST places I have ever eaten in. We were starving so we went in with dimmers in our eyes but as we gained strength from eating, our eyesight gradually improved. The aprons of the people working in there were caked with wet/dry flour, sauce and all kinds of mystery liquids. I'm thankful we didn't have pasta or anything that just needed warming up. Pizza ovens kill pretty much all bacteria. Anyways, if you find yourself starving in front of this place and everything else is closed, go ahead and try it. You won't die as I'm living proof of that but if you can go somewhere else, do it. It IS really cheap as well so I'm certain that some people will forgive the dirt for affordable eats. That pizza was damn fine though so I'll give them three reluctant stars.

okay if your trying to kill yourself- this would be a great method of doing so- sit your fat ass down at Papa Franks located in the wedgie ass crack of Winoski- slop down some straight LARD EVERYTHING IS LARD and IT ALL TASTE THE SAME! its bullshit. everything is super duper gross

As a broke college student this was my best value. Good food for a good price. Its a short drive from the UVM campus, but its very good. I loved their salad, lots of garlic bread, stuffed shells.

If you care more about getting cheap food then your health, have I found a place for you! Buttery-garlic bread, mountains of pasta with sauce, loaded with cheese, and full-calorie desserts. If you don't fit in to your bathing suit this summer, it is your own damn fault.

Not our first choice, but Columbus Day weekend on a Saturday night in Burlington and we could not get in anywhere else. Fun, small, homey, simple Italian food. My companions were impressed more than I was with the food, so I am giving this 4 stars. I enjoyed the friendly family feel, the cheery waitress and the buzzing atmosphere. I think the pizza is probably good as we saw a lot of people ordering it, but we opted for dinners - Chicken Parmesan and tortellini chicken Alfredo. Good!

This is my go to restaurant when I want a good Italian meal for cheap. The garlic bread is really tasty (especially if you add cheese) and you can get a plate of baked ziti that can easily last for 2 meals for under $10. The decor isn't great and it's a hole in the wall, but it doesn't really matter. The food is good and it's super cheap.

  • Kathe W.

Papa Frank's serves Italian comfort food that is inexpensive and tasty. Nothing fancy or extraordinary, but a good find in the Burlington area if you are on a budget. I ordered the small vegetable lasagna and my husband had the "special of the day" chicken rosemary ravioli. Everything tasted fresh. We went in the mid-afternoon on Saturday and nobody else was in the restaurant so if you're trying to avoid lines go at "off" times.

Great, cheap place to grab a tasty lunch or dinner in a very homey atmosphere. Finding this place has made me think of Winooski as more than just my regular stop on the way to Montreal.

  • Matt B.

Cheap, usually quick, filling Italian food. Nothing fancy, decidedly not gourmet. Crowded and dim with people seated near the door yelling at you to shut it when you are waiting in the foyer in the winter? Oh yes. Beautiful Sicilian pizza, generous antipasta salad, and yeah, the garlic bread is basically hot dog buns but a total white-bread guilty pleasure when covered with melted cheese. And did I mention cheap?

This is the very FIRST place we ate at when we rolled into Burlington last summer. It's classic, very inexpensive, homey, and hearty. It's perfect for families, college students and anyone else who enjoys neighborhood Italian American food. Great value. A MUST.

I admit it, the fifth star is for nostalgia, because this is such a favorite with my extended family (now scattered as far as Chicago and Washington DC.) But this Winooski institution is friendly, fast, comfortable and tasty.

Oh man. This is my first visit to Papa Frank's and let me tell you that I am very impressed. The feel of the place is really inviting and makes you feel like your part of a family. They have beer and wine so definitely get one. I got one of their pizzas and boy was it good. It was juicy and crispy, definitely great. Don't even check this place out, just go there.

So I met this girl from Vermont while I was studying in London. We dined, we traveled. We partook of the finest cuisine in Naples, Capri, Rome... But when I looked in her eyes, I saw... silent, profound disappointment. No, of all the meals in all the cities we visited, none could stand up to her ideal. The most "wicked best Italian Food on the Planet," she would call it. If you're reading this, that means that you too have heard of the legend. Yes, Papa Frank's of Winooski is the place of which she spoke. She took me there, one rainy Halloween. Would my life be changed forever? Would I learn that everything I had known, that everything I had seen, had been a lie? ... Uh, no. I wouldn't. Katie. And the floor of this restaurant is definitely sloping a dubious 45 degrees to the right, in case nobody had noticed. Give me my 3 seasons back, you crackhead!

  • Katie K.

I used to work here. You can take that for what it's worth. Often you hear employees of restaurants saying things like "gross, I would never eat there now that I've seen what goes on in the kitchen!" or "the only reason we're still open and the owner isn't in prison is because he pays off the health inspectors," but I will not say these things about Papa Frank's. In fact, you will never hear me say a bad thing about it. They make everything from scratch. EVERYTHING. Newsflash: a lot of restaurants serve frozen food that they heat up in the microwave and their soup comes from big, bucket-sized cans. Not here. And I have worked at places that do this, it's true. Out of respect (and a fear that they might hire hitmen as well as use preprepared food) I will not disclose the names of those establishments. Pizza- really good. Really, really good. Matt P had to be a smartass and make fun of my love for PF, but I love it. While I worked there, I ate all I could, the whole shift. And you'd think I'd weigh 300 lbs now, but the line at the door and constant table turn-over kept me at a run. It's been here since, like, the 80s (I dont know what year, but I think it says on the sign) and, like, everyone in the greater burlingon area has been here. It's a favorite of families, seniors, and especially college students. Vermont-made beer is always on tap and the daily special is $4.50. That's for a whole meal. Delivery is available through 865-TOGO... or whatever that service is called

In my opinion, this is arguably the best valued meal in Chittenden County. Besides the fact that the food is very tasty, it is extremely affordable. The waitstaff is very friendly and knowledgeable and I've never had a bad meal there. The only downside is that the dining room can be a little cramped at times, but I like that vibe. It makes me feel like I'm in a corner restaurant in Little Italy. There's a reason there is always a line out the door to P. Franks: The food is damn good.

Papa Frank's gets five stars because of its price. The food is otherwise unremarkable, but where else can you get a decent Italian meal, and good family staff for under 6 dollars? This is a great place for an unpretentious first date. Drippy candles and all, you'll love it.

Their pizza is the best in town. Delicious pasta, salads, and garlic bread too. When you walk in, it smells like the most wonderful place you have ever been, Very inexpensive, and you get a ton of food.

What a deal! Papa Frank's gets five stars for value. They serve basic pasta and sauce with garlic bread kind of Italian food. The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff always seems happy. Beware the pizza (I don't remember why, I just remember being disappointed) and having to wait for your table outside when it's really cold. Update: [29 May 07] Funny story, I was at Papa Franks late on Saturday night (the night before the marathon) and the waitress told me that at one point there had been 80 people waiting for tables. Apparently two groups of more than twenty people each had decided that the night before the marathon was a good time to drop in on a small Italian restaurant that doesn't take reservations. I guess it worked out for them since they were gone by 9:00 but, I would hate to have been in that line.

Inexpensive, consistent Italian food that will fill you up with a happy face. Good luck at getting a seat, or a parking place (if you want to park for free) The specials and the pizza are going to put you in a good mood, remind you of grandmas house.

Best value in the Burlington area!!! Great food with large portions. Garlic bread is consistant and excellent. My only complaint is the salads are a bit weak. I've taken many friends to dinner and created many fans.

Inexpensive Italian food that's actually quite good. Again, it's nothing fancy or special but you can't beat the price for a meal. Large groups are not a problem. If you go, be sure and order up some garlic bread... YUM! They do offer cold beer...not sure about the wine part though.

  • Sarah P.

for the price, it's really great food. the garlic bread is amazing. ordered the eggplant dish which was incredible and so well priced for the large portion size. really nice service too and great about accommodating large parties. a nice cozy mom and pop place with solid food.

Decent family-style Italian food. Nothing fancy or special. But it's good food (reminds me of something I imagine an Italian grandmother would make). And you can't beat the prices - absolutely worth it. Best things on the menu include the garlic bread (this is the way it should be - a bit cripsy on the edges, and soft and gooey and buttery inside); the roasted head of garlic (for only a buck). And dare I say it - I think the meatballs are better than Boves.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
