15 years of experience waiting tables in places like Aspen and DC; I judge a restaurant on two things: food and service. This place gets 5 stars for food, but only one for service. My wife and I went into Leslie's on a Thursday night at 7:30. Restaurant had 20 or so other patrons. It took 10 minutes after being seated to get water, and a drink order. By that time we were ready to order our food, and we placed food order with the server. After that we were never checked on until our food arrived. A mixed green salad for her and the chèvre and hazelnut ravioli for myself. They came out of the kitchen at separate times. We had to ask for bread with our meals. Nobody ever checked back to see if everything was prepared OK. The table next to us asked for bread and were told they could not have any because they only ordered appetizers. Come on, bread costs 50 cents. Two other tables seated after us appeared to be getting the same poor service. I had to get up and refill our own water glasses. Was presented the check, then had to wait 10 minutes for anyone to come take my credit card. By that point we had enough, I left cash and a tip that reflected the poor service, and got out of there before they could ruin anything else. The kitchen prepared both meals perfectly, kudos to them. However this place needs some serious training for their waitstaff. Did I mention that my waitress was named Leslie? I sure hope it was not actually the namesake of the place, because that would be even more embarrassing for them.

Highly recommended by a friend who's father had been a regular, we had our first honeymoon dinner here. Nothing else seemed to be open on a Sunday evening anyway... But oh my: Beautiful garden outside, charming decor inside (including a lovely patio) and a delightfully friendly waitstaff headed by Leslie, the owner who turned out to be as warm and wonderful as the food! They cook with as many local ingredients as possible and it was easily tasted in our salads made with veggies from up the road. It seemed their menu may not be fixed, which would make sense for local (therefore seasonal) ingredients, so you may find completely different offerings, but if our experience was any indication, you won't be disappointed! - My new husband, Derek, tried the (house made) Thai curry vegetables with jasmine rice. They accommodated his heat preference and matched it perfectly. - I opted for 2 irresistable-sounding appetizers as my meal: crab cakes with chipotle sauce and wild mushrooms in phyllo. I'm not a crab cake expert but they were pretty damn awesome: wonderful flavor with that melt-in-your-mouth texture that makes you wish there were more than 2, but with a heartiness that makes you thankful there were only 2! The mushrooms were something spectacular... If you're a fungi-phile like me I can only describe it as a little piece of mushroomy heaven wrapped up in a delicate blanket of buttery awesome, then drizzled with nirvana (which turns out to be a balsamic reduction). 8 days later and my mouth still waters at the memory! - Needless to say we both cleaned our plates. As musicians, our only -- and I mean ONLY -- complaint was the music, which seemed to be smooth jazz and Muzak's evil offspring. It was soft enough that I could ignore it, but alas, poor Derek was aural agony :-( Certainly most people would find it a pleasant din if they noticed it at all. However, based on everything important (cleanliness, service, food) this place is top quality and gets my highest recommendation.

Wow - I cannot believe the other reviews! I double checked to make sure I was reviewing the same place! Went there on a recent Thursday while visiting our daughter at school. Ordered cheese plate, onion soup and crab cake for app's - all were brought out at separate times, but tasted okay. Tiny cheese plate for $14 - we are in Southern VT, right? Dinner continued with meals being brought out separately, with large gaps of time between each. There was one other table in the restaurant! DD had the filet which was good, but it should be at $30+, DH had steak and cheese - sliced sirloin with a boursin sauce - just ok, and I had the braised pork in a mustard sauce - I had to send it back - awful! It was sliced, dry, tough pork. Potato sides unedible - rock hard. When I explained to the waitress it was more like roast pork she responded, "I saw him braise it." Huh? When the check was brought out, waitress informed us she had to talk the chef out of coming out to our table - was he going to confront us?! Never again!!

If food were art, Leslie's would be La Louvre. From the salad to desert, we were honored with the honest flavors and tastes of delicacies, as if we were sauntering past Renoir and Picasso. What a treat, 5 stars, I wish there were 10 available.

So glad we stopped! Wonderful menu. Surprising wine list. Great staff! Vermont farm fresh network, too! Tops!!!

We were just looking for a place to get dinner and a drink on a Sunday night, and even though it was closing time, Leslie's kept the kitchen open late for us and didn't make us feel rushed at all. The food was fantastic with a charming atmosphere. Our waitress Kim even called 2 nearby hotels for pricing and availability!

A great find. Staff was wonderful, very accommodating. There was a large party coming in, but they were happy to take us without a reservation on a Friday night (we did get there early...). The food selection is not huge, but what they offer is great. We had the vegetarian special and the crab cakes, they were both great. The chef came out and talked to us, Leslie stopped by to check in, the wait staff was attentive and fun. Without a doubt, we will be back. But with the kids so I can have some profiteroles. If you are in the area, it is worth a stop.

My dad and I came here a few nights ago, and I had one of the best meals I've had in a long time. The mushroom soup was amazing: full rich mushroom flavor (without being too earthy), strikingly fresh herbs, and perfect consistency. The owners have their own herb garden, and it has really paid off. The pork tenderloin saltimbocca was mindbogglingly good--lovely mild melted cheese and again the fresh herbs (in this particular dish a lot of sage, I believe). Also had a really pleasant chat with Leslie, John (the chef) and Linda the server. Great gem right outside Bellows Falls!

What a charming treat! I haven't spent much time in Vermont, but this place is undoubtedly a true treasure. The restaurant is owned by a very hospitable husband and wife team who go above and beyond to make your experience the best it can be. The interior is charming, and the building itself was constructed in the 1700s (history buffs take note!). Everything on the menu looks amazing, and it changes frequently. The restaurant also comes stocked with several wines and beers, including a lot of local fare. We were brought warm bread with a homemade butter spread to start. For an appetizer I got the crab cakes, served with a sweet chili sauce - seriously delicious and a combination I hadn't tried before. For my entree, I chose the Vermont beef sirloin steak, served with two sauces, assorted veggies, and mashed potatoes. The chef knows his stuff; everything was cooked with skill and tasted wonderful. Everything served here is also very local - you can't go wrong with that. I wish I could try everything on the menu, but I guess that means I'll have to make sure to come back.

Leslie's is a charming and intimate restaurant. Leslie, the chef's wife and pastry chef is also the hostess and was a delight! She is very friendly with everyone and comes around the patrons to chat and get feedback on the food. The food is absolutely amazing! My husband had the cod and it was very good but I clearly got the winning plate in the pork tenderloins! I literally almost wiped my plate clean! For dessert we had the pumpkin flan and maple syrup creme brûlée - both fantastic. Our server was also very attentive and nice. Truly enjoyed our anniversary dinner!!

We had a great meal here. Everything is made from scratch so if you're in a hurry then don't bother, but if you want to sit, savor and enjoy a marvelous ambiance then this is the place. The chef has serious skill... Duck was gently cooked with a great gentle blood orange glaze, and the lamb rack was outstanding, cooked exactly as ordered with a mustard breading. I had read on here that the checkout process with the square reader on the iPad was awkward, but that was not our experience. Yes they use the iPad but they didn't stand over us. It is actually quite convenient and doesn't kill trees. The wait staff was kind and genuinely seemed like they wanted you to have a great meal and a fun time. All-around good restaurant where everything is done "the right way," and we will be back when we're in the area.

What a great spot! Leslie is a great host and amazing pastry chef, and John is a wonderful chef. The food is creative and delicious. Everything is cooked to order, so don't pick Leslie's if the most important thing about your meal is how short it lasts! But if you want great food at a moderate pace without spending too much, this is one of the best places in the area. We had a wonderful halibut special over a lemon pepper risotto, a delicious ragu over cheese tortellini and wonderful short ribs. The desert was also great. Highly recommended.

What a wonderful representation of New England fare! Loved, loved, loved the food. Our party ordered sirloin tips - wonderful, scallops - delicious, chicken in parmesan sauce - to die for, crab cakes - another hit. Our wait-staff was attentive and helpful. Wine was very tasty. Leslie has a primo chef in the kitchen. We ate inside the tavern and felt like we were steeped in New England right from the start. Can't wait to go back! By the way, couldn't finish my chicken but the leftovers the next day were nearly as good as the previous night. Kudo's to Leslie, the staff, the chef! The price? - worth every penny of a reasonably priced dinner. My only disappointment is that I don't live near enough to visit frequently. Where's the picture? - We couldn't wait to dive in. Sorry!

My wife and I had just eloped on New Year's Eve, and after looking at the menu, Leslie's Tavern was our pick for our first dinner as a married couple that same evening. We had a 7:45 reservation. We arrived on time and were seated promptly. There was no acknowledgment of any occasion (which we did not expect, considering they may not have known about our marriage), but we were clearly dressed up for a special occasion and informed our waiter right away that we were celebrating our elopement. That was when things started to go downhill. It was nearly thirty minutes before we even got water. The waiter seemed confused, remarking, "Oh, she didn't give you any water?" Then took off in the other direction, but did not return with anything remotely liquid. We never learned who exactly this "she" was, but eventually, someone came by and filled our glass about halfway. The waiter returned about ten minutes later to take our order. My wife and I both ordered the same thing--filet mignon, which was a $33.00 plate. We ordered ours medium and medium-well, and we also ordered some soup to start, French onion, and a mushroom soup. By that point, our cups were dry, and no food in sight. It was going on close to an hour's wait. Suddenly, around 8:30, a bread basket and some herb butter appeared. We were starving, and thankfully, it was delicious. I am a big butter connoisseur, and this was indeed good. We were grateful for the bread and butter, and we thought there may still be hope. Around 8:45, the soups arrived. Those were delicious, too. The French onion hit the spot with its perfect onion to broth ratio, gruyere, and crouton. My wife's mushroom soup was the most flavorful, though $8 is a bit steep for a minute cup size. Water was hard to come by, and we had to flag people down to get any more. They kept refilling the glasses only halfway, and we were parched! 9:00 PM and the filets finally make their debut. An hour and fifteen minutes should have ensured perfection. But no. My medium filet was an unfortunate well done, and my wife's medium-well, I dare not say. I will say that I had to give her some of mine since it could be chewed through with more facility. What a shame for a good cut of local beef. We lamented its loss. No one came back to see how the filets were, so we couldn't even complain (nor did we want to wait any longer!). There were side dishes, too: mashed potatoes and green beans. The mashed potatoes were nothing spectacular, but were a good enough accompaniment to the mushroom sauce on the filet. The green beans were raw and rubbery. We could not finish them. We finished what we could and requested the check, because frankly, we just wanted to get back to our beautiful room and enjoy our night together. There was no final acknowledgment or anything to make our night special, even after we said we just got married. For New Year's Eve, a marriage celebration, and spending nearly $100, we expected better, but this didn't even meet average. The hostess gave us a lukewarm congratulations upon our exit, but never once made sure our dinner was going well or made extra special the whole evening. One would think they would make sure that such a celebratory event was nothing short of a stellar experience. We will not be returning.

We pull up to Leslie's and both look at each other with a face that says, "Hmmm, is this the right place?" Being city folk that have never been out to dinner in Vermont, we were a bit hesitant walking into Leslie's given that it just looks like any old New England Bed & Breakfast. I was immediately put at ease when we checked in with the hostess...Leslie. Leslie is awesome. Entering the dining room/home, we knew we had made a great call. Think quaint, cozy, country with a great mix of locals and out-of-towners. The food (i.e. the most important thing) was worth the stop: - perfectly warm crisp bread (A) - better than most steakhouses - Harlowe Green Salad (A) - some of the freshest lettuce we've ever had (Leslie sources locally daily) - Crab Cakes (A) somehow blew away anything I've had in MD (strong statement - I understand) - Flat Bread Pizza (B+) Pesto/Mozz was exactly what you'd expect. Nothing special, but good - Scallops w/ Butternut Squash Ravioli (C+) This was the only thing I had that was off - Scallops were slightly undercooked even for seared scallops and the ravioli didn't help - Boston Creme Pie (A+) homemade by Leslie (like almost all her desserts) and truly exceptional. Meghan and the entire staff provided great service with a real family feel to it. Leslie's is quintessential Vermont and should be considered for anyone driving along on 91 - literally right off the exit.

This is one of our favorite restaurants. If we want to host friends, we go to Leslie's. The food is great. The staff so friendly. The atmosphere is appealing. What more can you want?

Leslie's would like to be better and we wish it was. Usually we dine at least twice before writing reviews of any establishment, but because we came away disappointed we're not sure we'll be back. So here's a very short comment on what is an attractively situated restaurant that resembles inside and out a tavern of an earlier era. The food was generally under-seasoned; the entree halibut was flaky and quite bland. The crab cakes were satisfactory, the spinach salad with warm bacon dressing tasted like merely bacon grease, while the loki-loki tuna appetizer was the best dish we ate. There is a small wine list from which we found a pleasant red, and the service for part of the evening was friendly and efficient. Sadly, after our meal the server just disappeared. We clocked 20 minutes without any attention. Getting a bill after that required additional time and getting another server's attention. We weren't satisfied overall with the quality of the food and service and for the money thought it a tad overpriced. Too bad; it's really a pretty place. If we decide to return, we'll definitely update this.

Stopped here for dinner on a Thursday night, just passing through during a snowstorm. The ambiance was great, the restaurant is a typical farmhouse style in a New England town. The service was really good, our waiter was excellent. That being said, the food was not. The warm bread that came out was tasty, and the pesto butter was arguably the best part of the meal despite the butter being cold and unspreadable. We ordered the pepperoni flatbread as an app. We were shocked when it came out just swimming in oil. You could pick up a piece and watch the grease drip off. My husband ordered the beef tips with garlic mashed potatoes. I ordered the braised duck. The meals came out at the same time, however were room temp at best. His beef was so rare it was barely cooked. Even that would have been okay, but the beef smelled and tasted of lighter fluid or white gas. It had an overwhelming smell. Not sure if it was the beef or the sauce, but it was terrible. His garlic mashed potatoes had no garlic, nor were they mashed. It was one boiled potato cut in half, with almost no taste. The green beans were done very well however. The braised duck was tough, and didn't have much meat at all, however the green beans and braised veggies were good. We thought the prices were very high for the quality of the food. Also, they use an iPad to run credit cards. That's fine up til the server brings it to your table so you can punch in the tip amount with them standing over your shoulder. Awkward at best, fortunately the server was really good, the awful food was not his fault.

there were two of us and we have differing opinions: my boyfriend says: the period travel billboard on the side of the building says it all .... what you would expect in the 1940's! good local food ( his hamburger and mashed potato patty were perfect). I, on the other hand who had offered to treat , am not so delighted. 8$ for a tiny cup of greasy , mushroom soup , followed eventually by a plate of pot stickers which was overflowing with overly spicy soy sauce which ruined the potentially good chopped salad and left me a bit perturbed. patience was required for the service .... my boyfriend says his Cabernet was both delicious and generous... we want them to stay in business because it is indeed very charming and the wait staff does try.....but they could use a bit if improvement.
