    Have eaten here many times over the past eight years and am sorry to say the service level and food quality have drastically declined. Generally, the atmosphere is now a little tacky and almost borderline dirty. Food is OK to a point but quality and taste are a notch below good diner food. Also, beware the salad bar - frequently the selections are old and need to be replaced. The wait staff is usually inexperienced because I think they have a high turnover. Unless you get someone who has been there a while you may have a long wait between drinks and appetizers and main courses. We kept hoping that our negative experiences were just an anomaly and went back a few more times thinking, "It will be better this time" but it never was. Twice we wound up sitting in the dining room next to tables of guys who weren't eating but were sure drinking a lot of beer. Let us say that it did not enhance the dining experience. The straw that broke the camel's back was a 45-minute wait for our meal. We asked about the delay several times and finally the owner/manager(?) came out to our table and told us our order was delayed because there was a shift change and a different staff was in the kitchen(!) This didn't make any sense and there was no apology. When we finally got our food it was absolutely cold. We wanted to have our waitress take it back to the kitchen so it could be reheated but she had disappeared and only showed up 20 minutes later to give us our check. Frequently there is a delay to pay at the cashier's desk because they don't have anyone permanently assigned to that task - you'll have to wait for a hostess or waitress to show up and cash you out. Is there anything really good about the place? Yes - the views of Lake Memphramagog from the deck. Unfortunately that does not make up for the inadequate service and mediocre food.

    Disappointed! In a town where so many retailers are selling locally grown/made items, would it kill this restaurant to purchase fresh veggies from a local farm? The sweet potato fries were frozen, the salad bar left a lot to be desired and the spinach ravioli was made with frozen ravioli and frozen spinach?!? Really? Tasteless. I don't understand what the other reviewers were eating when they left positive reviews. Eat at the Brown Dog instead!!

    I'll always have a place in my heart for the East Side, which, in my youth, was a smaller, slightly ramshackle restaurant with a nautical theme called The Landing. First off: "The Deck." I place high value on outdoor seating and the East Side has an awesome deck overlooking Lake Memphremagog. Drive your boat over, park in one of their many slips and enjoy a few cocktails at sunset--you won't regret it! My uncle, who shows up here about 3-4 times per week in the summer, refers to the East Side as simply "The Deck." As in: "We're going to The Deck," which means a casual meal and cocktails on the water. Or just cocktails on the water. So, now that we've established this place has great outdoor seating, on to the food. Which, yeah, isn't so hot. The salad bar is okay, but the one vegetarian entree--a pasta ravioli with vegetables--is leathery and oily, which is how I like a saddle, not my dinner. I always gather from the meativorians in my party that the seafood and meat dishes are also so-so. There aren't a terribly lot of options for dining in Newport, so the East Side would have to be really bad not to be a contender, but my recommendation is to spend some time drinking on the deck before you get to the food. That's what we always do!

    This place was recommended to us by a local and we were not disappointed. I had the steamers and the portion was huge! My partner had the seafood bisque and enjoyed every bite. I moved on to the Cajun mahi mahi and it was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The surf and turf was reportedly delicious, the fried shrimp being the most perfect. The table service was lovely, even if the front of the house service was lackluster and totally disorganized. The only thing I noticed that could use improvement was the portion sizes of the entrees were wildly different.

    This place was good ten yrs ago. Recently it has fell off bigtime. Tons of flies, the place is not as clean as it once was and food is marginal. now it mostly attracts people from quebec. Waitresses are really nice here though...

    My wife and three children have been to the East Side many times the past six years and we've introduced many friends to it. I've even brought business associates to the East Side. It's a standby for us. We are from Chittenden County but have a house on the Lake that the East Side sits on. We've been to the East Side by both boat and car. It is just a little bit more interesting to go by boat. The service and selection are good. I wouldn't say it's the best food I've ever eaten but it is consistently pretty good and it's the best option for mid-price range in Newport area. And, the views can't be beat. They also added a new deck over the water in early August 2009. It's a nice addition but on some nights you are better off inside to avoid the biting insects. The menu selection varies from burgers to seafood. There's pretty much something for everyone.

    Food is ok. Reasonable prices. Front desk is mis-managed. Reservations mean nothing to them. You arrive 5 minutes early and your name still goes on the waiting list. 30 minutes later you get a table. What is the point of a reservation?

    Ate there twice last week. Not a lot of options in Newport Vermont. This place is really pretty decent. Not as clean as I like to see a place and therefore only 3 stars. They have a great dinning deck and it overlooks a huge lake whose name I could never spell. They also have a good deal of indoor seating. Priced pretty well and decent grub. Had a great bloody Mary and was then inspired to order Horseradish encrusted Cod. Kind of bland .... but for sure eatable. Actually the rice was more flavorful. Next day had the Pot Roast for lunch. Was really good. Clean the place up a bit, and for their target customer base, it would be a 4 star place all day long.

    Been here twice, both times food was better than expected and drinks were well made. Both times service was fair to average but on a nice day on the deck it didnt really matter. Soups were good, fish tacos were good, clam strips were clam strips, etc.

    Three of stayed in Newport for a night during our road trip and were recommended East Side by the front desk. To start we got some beers and a cocktail. My Jolly Sailor cocktail was yummy and boozy. We all shared the seafood platter and the sweet pea ravioli entrees, which come with a plate from the salad bar buffet. It was pretty late at night already, but there was a pretty decent selection of items from the salad bar including mushroom bruschetta and all sorts of veggies. They also give a complimentary basket of crackers and cheese basket which was really yummy. The Fisherman's Platter was full of scallops, shrimp, and fish. The pasta was not what I expected (not quite sure what I expected actually) but it was basically goat cheese ravioli mixed with veggies including sweet peas (not just the peas, but whole pods). We opted for the broiled, rather than deep fried seafood platter. The scallops were small, but cooked well. The shrimp was a bit overcooked. It was good and with the extra plate of food from the buffet and the cracket basket, we were F U L L by the end of it. Comfy booths and good service to round it off. I haven't tried any other places in Newport, but this seems like a more than decent place to eat if you're in the area.

    I went here about a week ago for a friend's rehearsal dinner for her wedding. We had about 15 to 20 people in our party. We had reservations for 7pm. When we got there, it was extremely hot inside and we had to wait an additional 20 minutes for our table, what is the point in a reservation??? When we finally got to our table, the waitress gave us 3 menus...keep in mind we had 15-20 people in our group!!! We asked for more menus, and the waitress said "I'm trying to find some." About 25 minutes later, she comes back with menus. We finally order, and about 1.5 hours later we got out food. I had the flat bread margarita, it wasn't that great, it was black/burnt on the edges. The waitress wasn't good about refilling our water glasses. The salad bar looked nice, but I didn't have it. After spending over 2 hours there, it was finally time to go and I couldn't wait to get out of there!!! However, the waitress doesn't take your check, you have to wait in a massive line at the front of the restaurant to check out! annoying, especially after sitting around waiting for food for almost 2 hours!!! The only good thing I can say, is that the restaurant itself is beautiful and it has great VT mountain views.

    The East Side is probably the best restaurant in all of way-upstate VT. Every time my family visits my grandparents, a trip to the Eastside is a tradition that will not be neglected! I've practically grown up in this place and have had everything from a casual meal to Thanksgiving dinner here. Their food can't be beat for the area; a large selection of salads, soups, regular entrees, seafood and other fare let diners choose whatever they desire. The Thanksgiving I ate here probably had some of the best cooked Turkey I've ever had; perfect and with too many sides to choose from! Families come for miles around, rehearsal/anniversary/retirement parties are held here, and the friendly wait staff has I'm sure seen it all. The East Side itself is nicely decorated, nothing too spectacular, but they do have a nice shop attached where one can buy Maple Syrup products, local crafts, art and more. A large deck area is also available for seating in the summer months, where one can look out on the lake and dine in the sunset. If you need someplace nice to eat in Newport, be sure to look this place up

    In a not-always vegan-friendly area, I was more than pleasantly surprised to find a vegan dish on their menu. It was a lovely Vermont made ravioli. There is also a vegan dumpling appetizer which I didn't try. The ravioli, however, was not cooked properly--it was kind of hard/leathery. It still tasted good, but I was surprised at the quality. The fries I ordered on the side were very good. Additionally, the salad bar was very tasty and very fresh! In short, I was happy to be able to eat out with my family and feel included, so while the meal was sort of 3/4 stars, the view and the experience was more of a 4/5.

    Dear Eastside, What happened to the Eastside that I grew up loving, longing to visit every summer, usually 5 or 6 times. in my absence you've lost the dark cool ambiance that we all loved so dearly. My staple club sandwich reduced to a pitiful pile of processed chicken and bread - both soggy and painfully crunchy at the same time. The waitresses once friendly, young and eager replaced by grouchy old witches. A simple, obviously unheard of, request to swap the fries for a salade was returned with a stern 'the club sandwich comes with potatoe chips, not fries' and ultimately resulted in a 7.50$ side salade. My wife's "popcorn" chicken salade was filled with a lesser version of processed chicken McNuggets. I'm hurt and disappointed that you've slipped so far Eastside just pathetic. thankfully the beer was cold, otherwise...one star. Sincerly, George.

    I'm in the Newport area a few times a year visiting family and I always need a place to grab a bite to eat before heading home. I used to just make a hit-and-run stop at McDonalds in Derby, but eating mystery meat on a bun is a pretty joyless affair, so I've started making the East Side my restaurant-away-from-home. The service and food quality has always been solid (I've enjoyed everything I've eaten here), and the prices are reasonable. Summer is the best time of year to visit for a meal, with seating on the outside deck. The view of the boat dock and Lake Memphramagog is gorgeous. (This would be a great spot for dinner and/or drinks at sunset.) But even in winter, there are huge windows with a view of the lake. There's plenty of seating in the bar and dining room (I've never had more than a 5 minute wait). There is a large gift/sweets shop attached to the restaurant, with homemade pastries, chocolates, Vermontiana and such, but I've never spent much time in there. The parking lot here is huge, so you shouldn't have trouble finding a spot--though finding the restaurant itself might be a little tricky for out-of-towners: You have to drive under a railroad overpass with very narrow lanes, then turn left

    Another 5 stars for this restaurant. This is my 2nd visit in less than a year and I am from Texas. Next time I am in the area I WILL come again. This visit weather cooperated for us to sit on the deck to enjoy the view along with the food and company. I had the seafood scampi and it was wonderful. Of course the big fresh salad bar comes with all entrees and that alone could be a meal. I wish we had this restaurant where we live. The mixed appetizer that one at our table ordered was also superb- wings potato skins empanadas stuffed with tasty meat egg rolls The only criticism was a steak was ordered medium rare by one in our party of 8 and came at well done but he said it was tasty none the less.

    Crossed the border to revisit this restaurant with family (which used to be "The Landing"). We showed up on Monday, nearing the end of the lunch rush - so the number of people in the restaurant was going down as we arrived. However, it seems the wait was going up. We all ordered the same thing - pretty simple: "Vermonster" burgers, and caesar salads. We were asked if we'd like the salads to come out first (we said yes), and were explicitly told they'd be right out. We waited over a half an hour - the waiter told us they would be just a few moments at the 25 minute mark. When the salads came out, the burgers came out about 30 seconds after - we hadn't even gotten plates for salad (we were sharing). Was not impressed by the food. Salad was soggy. Two of the burgers (party of 4) weren't thoroughly cooked (too pink). I'm sure it was safe, but we took probiotics after, and that kind of made it gross.

    The restaurant has been a family tradition for many many years, for my Lemieux Family. They have renovated and it's simply beautiful. I love how they decorate during the holidays. The atmosphere is wonderful, with the view of the lake. The food is also wonderful with a huge variety! HB

    Coming off the highway with no cell phone signal meant not being able to access Yelp and finding a restaurant. We did what anyone should do in that situation - we stopped and asked a local. We were directed to the Eastside Restaurant and pub. The parking lot was full and the water nearby was frozen and covered with snow mobiles and trucks. Talk about entertainment! On entering the building - I was drawn to the Made In Vermont Store to the right... the building had the typical smell of cleaning products which made my stomach squirm but I figured - so do all the Pubs in Ireland! So we were seated in the pub and almost every table was also occupied. The television sets had been set to show text and the volume was mostly nice music and the sounds of conversations in both english and Quebecois french. I ordered the fried chicken, a side of vegetables for my son, and my husband ordered the poutine and a burger. The food came relatively quickly and looked very freshly prepared. It was delicious! The vegetables were not overcooked as I had expected from pub-fare but instead, just perfect amount of crispness remaining. We all engorged ourselves but due to the antics of my son - opted not to stay for dessert. I must say, the serving staff were very welcoming. She obviously had a child at home to be able to understand the needs of a toddler. We didn't even notice the time going by as our experience was that enjoyable.

    Last summer we had horrible service/food and when asked how our meal was we let them kindly know it was sub par. In turn we were given a comp meal for four and we decided to use it this weekend. While I can say our server was awesome the food just didn't make the cut. The server looked stressed and overworked - I truly felt sorry for her. The deck was filled with spiderwebs and trash - a quick sweep of a broom would have done the trick. My mojito tasted only of liquor and like no other mojito I've ever tasted. Our calamari must have been frozen, microwaved and/or under a heat lamp for some time. Disgusting. My burger was alright but definitely not done as I had ordered it (medium but was more on the very well done side). The other folks in my party said their entrees were cold and rubbery (they had raviolis). While the sever was great - the food and the dirty atmosphere has made it so we will not return.

    Had lunch there yesterday and was quite pleased. We were seated promptly and pleasantly. Our orders arrived promptly and nice and hot. I had one of the days specials, pork medallions for $10.95. They were fabulous. Tender and juicy and flavorful. One star taken off because the waitress was just too rushed. Maybe it a was her or they were short on personnel. It was a Tuesday. I got the flour less chocolate cake for desert. It tasted good but needs attention to presentation. Speckles and canned whip cream were unsightly and unnecessary. And for a cup cake size portion overpriced at $5.95.

    I love this place. It is a must every time I visit my in-laws in Newport. We had our wedding rehearsal dinner here and I've been hooked ever since. The Prime Rib is the best in Newport and the salad bar is a good value for the money. This place also has a country store in the front that sells the best pies in the city. Try the chocolate cream and the lemon meringue (YUM!). Perfect dessert after a big prime rib dinner. I highly recommend this place. Great views of the lake, great food, good service.

    Was @ Jay Peak in Far North VT; East Side was a 30min drive; Made reservations several hours in advance for 8 people. We had a bit of a wait as the restaurant was pretty packed; however management made up for it offering up multiple complimentary appetizers. I would recommend the bacon wrapped scallops and the mushroom caps; For main course I split the Prime Rib and King Crab Legs. The only downfall was the Prime Rib; which had a spongey texture (for lack of a better word). The crab legs were as expected; and pretty good. The check was uber cheap in comparison to NYC prices.

    We were originally going to dine at the Willoughvale Inn for new years eve, but after an odd message from the hostess about the chef was "no longer with us"... which we thought meant the worst (turns out it wasn't true - and they cancelled everyone's dinner - but that's another review!) ... We made reservations at East... 7pm reservations, and we got seated about 7:30.... It was a cattle call at the front reception area, and yes it was New Years Eve, so they get a pass... They were trying as much as they can. It took a while to get the waiter, but when he came - he was friendly and attentive - we got a couple martini's - extra dry and dirty, and they were maybe a 2.5 of 5. Served cold, but way too much vermouth and not enough olive juice. A good martini, made to the guests request is a challenge for most bartenders, and it really shows a lot about the bartender's skill. This guy didn't have it, but the locally brewed beer was great, and the wine glasses were served robust and full. Moving onto the apps - we ordered the bake oysters - and we loved them - I'd give them a 8.5 of 10, and the only reason not higher is we only got 4. But fresh and robust, not an easy feat for a small town near the northern border. I ordered a ribeye steak, 20 oz, and it was cooked perfectly to my medium rare request. Ana got a Port Loin wrapped in bacon with brie and sweet berry sauce Juicy and thick, charred perfectly- it was great - altho her sweet potato was served up straight baked, kinda funny looking - but again - nothin fancy - but cooked well.. All in all, it was a very interesting place, combination summer vacation resort marina, old style family restaurant and tacky gift shop. Would we go back? Most likely not. Wasn't bad to take in the local flavor here - but it was a last minute back up to our failed plans.

    Last summer we decided to go to the East Side. There were 5 of us. We had heard so much about the East Side Lobster Roll so 3 of us ordered it. When the Lobster Rolls were served it was a roll filled with slimy fishy smelling disgusting mush that smelled so bad you could not take the fishy smell enough to take a bite. We asked the server if the lobster was frozen and she said she would find out. The only answer we got when she returned was that the lobster salad was made that day. Maybe it was but the lobster that was used had been frozen more than once and should have been thrown out and not used! Visions of Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares were vivid about some of the restaurants refrigerators being in better condition than the one in the East Side were running through our heads. If you go...stay away from the Lobster Roll.

    I was very pleased with my lunch here. I had the chicken fajita sandwich and it was truly awesome! The coleslaw was great also. Some of my buddies were less thrilled about their lunches but I enjoyed mine. Deinately worth trying this place out. Especially since there really isn't much to choose from in Newport lol

    Awesome Easter buffet!!! Amazing, really, great for vegetarians and meat eaters. First time visitors to the area and found this gem, great value, beautiful views of the lake and attentive service. Tons of food choices and everything was so tasty and hot!

    The East Side can not be beat. It is the largest full service restaurant in the Northeast Kingdom as well as on the shore on Lake Memphremagog, a huge international lake. The outside deck is huge and the place to be on a hot summers night, which overlooks Newport's harbor as well as north into Quebec. Call ahead seating only, reservations are for party's of 7 or more. We called ahead and for the deck and had no problem. Previous times, we did not call ahead and had to leave as the wait was over 1 hour. So many hungry people come here from both the US as and Quebec as it is such a popular place. The menu is huge with everything from steak & chops, stuffed chicken breasts, fried fish and seafood, roast turkey dinners, soups, prime rib, burgers, sandwiches, and a huge salad bar which comes with every dinner entree. The building is huge and has many additions/ function rooms, and it was so crowded and I actually had to ask where the salad bar was. Two full bars here, with one inside and one out on the lakeside deck. The service here is young and a bit green. Small things like not mentioning the salad bar, when ordering, drink refills few and far between. Nothing bad or horrible. They have a small gift shop at the entryway and sell pies, crafts, and even maple syrup. A wonderful place to eat and enjoy, just plan head.

    Good atmosphere and the salad bar was average. The Chicken Parmesan was good but the Alfredo sauce had a unpleasant taste. It could have used more garlic. Service was good. There are probably better things on the extensive menu and I would give it another try. .

    Judging from the selection of restaurants in Newport, there's either Brown Cow (breakfast only) or East Side (L & D). Since it was high noon, we picked the lunch variant. ES can cater to many. Want to watch a game with the barhop? Check. Need a group area for a rehearsal dinner with a waterfront view? Done. In the mood for a soup & salad bar (the rare self-serve variety)? Sure. Traditional guy who's just stopping for a burger for the kiddos? Got it. And when you're done, you can swing thru their gift shop and grab all the maple goodness you ever wanted (and who doesn't?) Go straight to the specials. Many are homemade and use local, seasonal ingredients. The harvest ravioli was one great pick with pumpkin and other fall vegetables in a light creme sauce. Yes, homemade pasta too. On a cold, blustery day, it was perfect. Make sure to ask the waiter/waitress for recommendations, but the specials are generally legit.

    We were a little late due to trying to arrange a way to get our handicapped and elderly friend in the door. Someone had their truck parked in the way, so we had to wait until the truck was moved so we could pull up the ramp to get her in. Next, because we were a little late, the woman greeting us responded, "Oh, we almost gave away your table!" I found that very offensive. The food was TERRIBLE! Three of us ordered the Prime Rib Tips. First of all, the meat was not "tips" but rather "strips" as in stir fry style. Secondly, they asked us, "How would you like them cooked." We requested rare to medium rare, and they came out much too overcooked and very dry. We concluded they must have been reheated left-overs. We extremely disappointed and dissatisfied. The only reason we didn't send the food back was because we were with a dear friend who requested to go there for dinner. We did not want to bring an offense to her. Had she not been there, we would have definitely told them the meal was of sub-quality. Next, the mash potatoes were so thick, you had to cut it with the fork, not scoop it like whipped potatoes. The Lobster ravioli, the fourth meal ordered, was really cheese ravioli with a lobster bisque sauce. The person who ordered it got a tiny piece of lobster (not even a whole claw) with it. In all fairness, he did say it was, "Okay." We do not recommend this restaurant.

    I would give this restaurant 5 stars. But I took one star away because of the service. The seafood buffet is ,A+++ on Sat. nights. Very nice spread of different varieties, although I would love to see fried shrimp. Anyway. On the buffet (which changes) is seafood chowders, mussels, stuffed mushrooms, toast w. seafood sauce, stuffed fish, baked fish, choose your own seafood stir fry for you! pasta, mac and sheese. etc etc. then their is the bountiful salad bar. YUM! Every time we go to the E.S we dont get a good table (even though I reserve for window view on the porch) and our server could do better w. clearing the plates and refilling the beverages. One server that we had did a great job w. the table next to us (her husband and kids) we were neglected LOL..we are not too demanding, but the basics is expected when it comes to service. Other than that DELICIOUS food. we have been there many times before over the years and enjoy the food very much.

    We had lunch on Friday - we were quickly seated and got our drinks soon afterward. There was about a 10 minute pause - the restaurant was pretty busy - before our orders were taken. We started with the buffalo poppers (which we have enjoyed before) and were very disappointed - I could not tell there was chicken in the ones I had and there was very little buffalo flavor. I ordered the cranberry bomb, which was good - the flavors were a nice combination and the baguette crunchy the way it should be- but the coleslaw was nothing to write home about - too vinegary and wet. My husband had the fish tacos which he said were fine. My friend had one of the Eastside's specialties, chicken and biscuits, which she said was much too salty. Overall, the food was okay, but not a good as it has been in our past experiences.

    I ordered the Seafood Ravioli along with the Salad Bar. All and all, not bad. The Ravioli was pretty good, however, I must say I was pleasantly surprised by the Salad Bar. Though not that large, the selection was good and even offered soup! I also appreciated the different kinds of cheeses that they offered. I may skip the entree all together next time and just go for the Salad Bar. My dad had the Chicken Parmesan Bowl and wasn't very happy with it. As a side note, my parents are generally very fond of the Nachos and Calamari appetizer.

    The best part about this place is the location. It's an easy stop on the interstate right next to the border crossing into Canada, has a great back deck with nice views of the river and a well stocked bar, and is easily the best restaurant in the area. That said, it's not all rosy. The food ranges from *meh* to just okay, the wait staff is aloof at best, the restaurant itself looks like it was built in the '70's and never bothered to make improvements, and the typical clientele looks like their hey-day was also likely that same era. Worth a stop for a beer and a quick bite while on the road, but nothing to go out of your way for.
