When I called to reserve a room at Doyle's Guesthouse a few months ago, the proprietor, over the phone, told me the rate was 90 dollars but quoted a price of 60-odd dollars for one night in the confirmation email she sent. I quickly replied, asking if she'd changed her mind, as 60 was the starting price I'd seen for the guest house on a list of recommended lodging in Montpelier. She apologized for the mistake and said that no, the price was 90. I told her when my plane arrived in Burlington and that I planned to get to Montpelier by noon on the day I reserved, and she said that if I called her when I landed, she could check me in when I arrived instead of at 3, the usual check-in time. Fast forward to the day I arrived in Montpelier. The proprietor did not answer my call, but she returned it and said that they did not want me to check in until 3 but that I could leave my luggage in the room. I arrived at 12, left my luggage in the already-clean and very cute room, and left because her husband told me to "go find somewhere to be" for three hours. But first I had to pay the 93 dollars for my room. BEFORE I got to go in. I had just spent the entire night traveling and was ready for a shower and a nap, but fine. I'd never been to Vermont, or Montpelier, so I explored for three hours. I returned at 3 and asked if I could please check in. The lady seemed like she had forgotten all about me, and the room, and when I went inside I could tell no one had been in it. Why should they have? It was clean already three hours before. Then, the next morning, the lady said, "When you finally leave, put your key here." Really? Finally? She said it in a way that made it sound as though I spent my hours in the room making awful noise and trashing it. I actually spent most of the time sleeping, and the rest of it, reading. The place was clean enough and had A/C, a tiny oven, a sink, and a refrigerator, though the shared bathroom had black hairs on the floor and stuck in gross places. I have brown hair. This place is not worth 90 dollars a night, and I will not stay here the next time I visit Montpelier.
