We (8 diners) had dinner on a Friday night-6 adults & 2 kids. Two of us had the halibut special-served over spaghetti squash with cherry tomatoes & 4 shrimp-the halibut portions were somewhat small & a bit dry, but tasty. I had the grilled hearts of romaine with local cheese sauce & may have been the best Caesar I've had. Another of us had the herb crusted rainbow trout which he said was outstanding. One had the frenched pork chop which was outstanding. The cheddar gnocchi was deemed good but not outstanding. On the other hand (and thus a 4 & not a 5 rating) the natural chicken breast was under done & badly cooked. The arugula salad was very good as was the soup of the day (squash) was excellent. The ambience & service was excellent but a bit slow I believe due to the kitchen. Our server, Dawn, was very accommodating & the wine list was small but varied & with selections which matched well with the entrees. Almost a 5 but for the one poorly cooked entree.

The is one of two restaurants associated with The Grafton Inn. I had the opportunity to have breakfast here twice and dinner here once. Breakfast: I think breakfast is mediocre at best. The home fries, especially, are terrible. Most specifically, they're not really home fries. They're, like, french fries that were cut into squares to look like home fries. The french toast was dry and the egg didn't make it's way into the toast at all. It was flash dipped or something just to coat the edges. The omelets has good ingredients but I thought the eggs needed more and you'd think way out here in middle of nowhere land VT they'd have good thick cut country bacon but no... That said, the maple sausage was pretty good and the beverages (coffee, juice) were exceptional. Breakfast, by the way, is served in the garden room, which is bright and sunny and a great place to linger and wake up. Dinner: Dinner is in the front dining room and is a much more formal set up than breakfast. They tables are a little too big for two. I never though I'd day this anywhere, but we actually had too much room and were too far apart. The dining room is warm and somewhat cozy while still feeling stiff and formal. To start we had calamari and Caesar salad (see my review of Phelp's Barn for the Caesar). The calamari is very well done. Surprising, given how far we are from the ocean, but great. For my entree I had the short ribs. These weren't tender enough. Maybe I'm spoiled, but I expect short ribs to break apart with my fork. Although they didn't require a steak knife, they were still not quite tender enough. The flavor was good but missing something. The root veggies that same with it were also good but not amazing. I also had a chance to sample Mr. C's fillet. I thought the fillet, itself, was good but not spectacular but I thought the brussel sprouts that came with it were done very well. With brussel sprouts, it's easy to fail completely, but these were simultaneously buttery and light. Very nice. Dessert left us with chocolate espresso creme brulee and orange raspberry sorbet. The sorbet was light and tart and not too sweet. Exactly what I was looking for when ordering it. The creme brulee had exactly the right crust and consistency but had no coffee flavor at all. I don't mind that, per say, but it's worth noting it's much more chocolate than espresso. Honestly, I'd only give 3 stars overall but the staff in the restaurant were amazing. They were really accommodating with taking food with us or even takeout (so we could have one of our breakfasts in our room). These folks have got their game down.

It seems that the Inn and it's accompanying restaurants are all being reviewed together. I suppose that's fair, since they are all in the same building. But, there are four facets of the Inn I'll review. The Inn itself The Pub The Breakfast Room The Restaurant The Inn- The Inn has several buildings. All of the rooms in the main building are named. I can't remember the name of our room, but it was room #1. At the front desk some of the names of historical figures who have stayed at the Inn are listed, including Robert E. Lee. The Inn is over 200 years old, and a interesting history is listed on their website. graftoninnvermont.com/ab… Their sitting rooms are wonderfully cozy places to read a book near the fire. Mind you, these re wood burning fires, not the gas type that you see at hotels so often these days. The Inn is also in the process of going green, which shows through in the way they do things. Re THE FOOD - I can say a few things about all of the 4 meals we had at the Inn. First, the ingredients are fresh, and local, and it makes a huge difference. Maybe the I think I had some ketchup with my potato wedges - that's the only thing I can recall that wasn't home made. Also, the dishes all seemed to harken up the past. For example, the coconut cake wasn't exploding with coconut. It was subtle. Reminded me of what a coconut cake would have been like before all of our senses had been raped by Duncan Hines. The quiche was light, and had just a little bit of cheese. It was something you could actually eat more than once a week without giving yourself the gout. In any event, The Pub- PICK: Any of these 3 are awesome. Caesar salad. Real caesar salad made with raw egg. It was wonderful. BBQ Chicken flatbread - homemade crust. Seemed like all organic ingredients to me. I didn't ask, but I'm sure the cheese came from the Grafton Cheese (factory?) down the street. Fish and Chips. Fantastic. You know, if I had these somewhere else, maybe I wouldn't have noticed, but, they were really perfect. The food in the Pub was Perfect. And the service was hospitable, friendly and competent. Cost: the food above with 4 beers, I think was about $50. Breakfast Room - PICK: Poached Eggs Included in our package. Complimentary Scones. Warm, and wonderful. Poached Eggs (Eggs benedict) - Fantastic sauce. I put photo above. The flavor was wonderful. French Toast - a little dry for my liking but still very good. Served with maple syrup. Quiche - with asparagus and a small amount of cheese Dinner PICK: Dijon Chicken Wine list included reasonable options, but with some more refined options as well. Chicken Dijon- Served with a potato pancake and a light dijon sauce over slightly crispy organic chicken. Fantastic. Short Ribs - I've had better. Short Ribs are fantastic usually. This was a larger portion than I needed, and the second piece wasn't the most choice. The root vegetables surrounding it were a little crunchy for my liking. Mashed potatoes were awesome. The caesar salad was good, and the chef salad was missing a few elements described in the menu.

Don't get me wrong, the Old Tavern is neat for lots of reasons. Just the fact that you are eating in an establishment which was around in the early 1800's is amazing. The fact that you are likely staying upstairs for the night also adds to the experience. Unfortunately the food and service while both good, are just okay. We were there at a busy period, leaf season, but I still didn't appreciate being in the back room vice the main dining room. The server was very pleasant but obviously rushed. We ordered a mushroom tart appetizer which wasn't up to my expectations. I had a fillet and my wife pork chops. Both were good but again not up to the standards of fine dining. The photos I provided do more than words to describe this.

I had a fantastic dinner here. The Inn is overall an immensely romantic, old yet classy place brimming with old Vermont charm and prestige. You might need a sport coat and a monocle here but if you are proud to rock your own style and can get a table at this "reservations only" spot, you won't be disappointed. Menu consists of many options for fresh, local fare. Enjoyed fresh lump meat crab cakes, fresh lobster pot pie, various braised vegetables and balsamic polenta. Extremely good and I intend to make a trip back to stay longer.

Scones! Scones! Scones! So glad I have the recipe for those tasty little treats thanks to Kelley B. for having her wedding here and them giving us the recipes for a few of their tasty dishes they serve up at their hot full country breakfast each morning here! As I said, we were here for a wedding and the whole place was rented out for us, so it was a blast. The staff was very accommodating in this absolutely charming old fashioned inn right in the center of Grafton, VT. They even give you free cheese when you stay here! mmmmmm Cheese!! I really wanted to take that cutting board and knife though ha ha The rooms range in how they are decorated and ours was a little on the girl side complete with a canopy, but it was a corner room and was plenty spacious. The blow dryer cut out a few times and the wifi wasn't really accessible in our room, but overall with the free cookies and coffee offered in the living room daily this place is a nice spot to take a weekend trip away from the city. You can either say in the main lodge or rent out one of their separate cottages too! Overall an inn that gives you cheese is a winner in my book.

I just had the most fabulous night at the Old Tavern. I took my boyfriend here for his birthday and attended the French Wine Dinner. The Grafton Inn hosts these kinds of dinners on a monthly basis and we felt lucky this one fell on my boyfriends birthday. We sat right in the middle and shared a table with some truly wonderful locals and had such a great time tasting wine and food amongst new friends. The Innkeepers shared the table with us and were sweet enough to send out the final course with a birthday candle in it and we all joined in to sing happy birthday to my boyfriend. Thank you so much to everyone for sharing such a memorable night with us. We'll see you for flat bread pizza night soon.

I was so positively surprised with the Old Tavern! I stumbled upon this unique lodging establishment while searching for a ski house rental. Turns out this (beautiful/historic/classy) Inn rents four free standing houses located in walking distance. The Inn is in the uber-charming village of Grafton which is located about 20 miles from I-91, and is close to both Okemo and Stratton. We rented the Tuttle House, which had 5 bedrooms (sleeps 10-12) for $280 per night. NOT A TYPO. We rented a whole house for about $30 per person in the middle of ski season. In addition, because the rental houses are affiliated with the Inn, everyone enjoyed a delish complimentary (tip included) breakfast at the Inn each day of our stay. Big bonus: It is a dog-friendly establishment (for an additional $50 cleaning fee). The house was decorated in classic, New England style. The open concept living room / kitchen had an enormous wood-burning fireplace with ample wood and kindling provided. The beds are super comfy with soft linens and snuggly down comforters. There is an iPod docking station in every room. The kitchen was fully stocked and big enough to prepare family-sized meals. There was a lovely back porch where you can sit and listen to a babbling brook. We very much enjoyed the bowl of Apples and aged cheddar that greeted us, too. Only Caveat to the whole wonderful trip: Grafton is so rural that the way Google maps tried to send us to the mountain was a DIRT road (VT rt. 121). We found another safer (paved) route which took about 45mins. Overall it was a great experience. I can't wait to go back for summer hiking/mounting biking.

I am only commenting on the restaurant. After seeing several advertisements boasting innovative, imaginative cuisine at the Old Tavern, my boyfriend and I decided to check it out. What we got was traditional American cuisine that was mediocre at best. Also, we are both 28 and we were probably the youngest people in the dining room by 20 years. One bright spot- the older woman who works the front desk is delightful.
