Hands down a must-try. This is a complete winner in every way; staff, service, attitude, ambiance, and the food - oh my, the food. Kevin nails it every single time. Try the squash blossom fritters and whatever the fish special of the day is, masterful presentation and stellar execution. Every time.

L'Amante was highly recommended by a bartender at the Sheraton Hotel. I'm so happy he suggested it because it was perfect! I had just finished an Olympic Triathlon earlier that day and really wanted a nice, fine dining atmosphere with delicious food. That is exactly what I got. By reservation only, this restaurant has an awesome wine list, excellent menu, friendly & knowledgeable staff and beautiful atmosphere. The dining room is small, tastefully elegant with a very homey feel to it. After reading about the "history" of the restaurant on the men's room wall, my teammate recognized the owner of the restaurant's wife who came by the table to fill up our water. Now that's service! My friends and I just shared appetizers. Of the three, the Grilled Calamari was my fav. I wish we would have stayed for dinner. Next time I am in town, I will definitely be back for the full course. Two thumbs up!

Easily one of the best dining experiences I've had. The service was comfortable - the timing and execution was perfect so as to flow seamlessly with the meal. The food outstanding. Years later, I can still see it in my mind - the lemon risotto, the wine, the grappa. Most excellent. Someday we'll be back for a re-visit - here's hoping it stands the test of time.

I had the lobster over risotto with brown butter sage sauce. The meal was phenomenal. No cracking claws, the lobster was lazy and every bite melted in my mouth. I also got to try the squash blossoms. Tender with both the sweet and fried taste. Delicious! Next visit to VT I will definitely be eating here.

Service was a little slow and the mashed potatoes were a little salty, but the service was attentive (though when we were sitting at the bar waiting for the folks we were meeting, the bartender seemed to be paying a little too much attention to what seemed to be his friend instead of his customers. That being said, he was very willing to pour me a few tastes of wines by the glass to help me find one I liked.) We had the stuffed squash blossoms and grilled sardines for appetizers. Even though I expected the caponata to be cold, it was a little too cold to be paired with the grilled sardines. The squash blossoms were delicious. I had the gnocchi with pork and dried cherries as my 1st course. It was a little sweet for me (but delicious), but I knew I'd switch half way with my husband, who ordered the fennel risotto. THat was quite possibly the best risotto I've ever had. I also had a taste of the clam pasta and the orchiette with cauliflower (I'd order the latter next time!) My 2nd course was simple--a grilled strip steak with kale and Italian baked beans. It was fine, not knock your socks off good. I felt the same way about my husband's chicken. Definitely worth the splurge!

Meh. $160.00 for a dinner for two and the best I can say is: meh, it was okay. L'Amante has a great wine list and the apps were excellent (try the squash blossoms and the pollenta fries), but my steak was tough and fatty. The bass that my fiance ordered was very fresh and well cooked, but completely dull (it was crusted in potato and pan fried). The service was quick and precise (what more can you ask for?). Overall, it was a decent meal, but the entrees were completely boring. All that said, I would come back, but only for apps and wine at the bar.

This is the place we go when hubby allows me to choose a restaurant. Always the generously-portioned arugula salad, squash blossoms if in season. I like fresh healthy food prepared with a light hand - no matter my entree choice, L'amante will come through for me. I am expecting the protein to be prepared properly, but as well the vegetables are beautifully prepared and integral to the dish, the starch (if any) will be an appropriate serving and flavorful. Priced about the same as comparable Burlington restaurants = 2 people ordering an entree each, a modest bottle of wine, and sharing an appetizer = $100.

Delicious dinner.. Loved the squash blossoms... Lobster out of it's shell!

L'amante is one of the better restaurants in Burlington, and home to some of the best Italian food in town. Taking a more contemporary spin on classic Italian dishes, everything on the menu (that I've tried at least) is inventive and delicious. Probably the best wine list in town, L'amante is great for either a full meal or a glass of wine at the bar. This place has an upscale air to it but isn't overly intimidating or pretentious (all of their servers wear jeans.) Service was prompt and professional. I'd strongly recommend you try the Squash Blossom Fritters when they are in season!

Just went here last night as a Xmas dinner with family in from out-of-town. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was wonderful -- casual dressy -- and our waiter, Ian, was fantastic! He knew his wines and helped us find a great bottle from their interesting wine list. I had the pesto risotto with asparagus and grilled shimp, my husband had the penne bolegnese and our guests had the sea bass. We shared everything and thought all of the dishes were wonderful. Don't skip dessert -- the chocolate ganache and creme brûlée are equally as tasty as the entrees!

We've just returned from another great meal at L'amante. We've been going to this restaurant for over five years and have always enjoyed the meal immensely. In addition to great food, the wait staff are always friendly and attentive. It has a warm ambience and a great place for a long leisurely dinner with friends. Wine list is great and don't leave without trying the chilean sea bass and squash blossom fritters.

My family spent a week in the Burlington area recently. We had selected L'amante for our 'big meal out'. We were not at all dissapointed! Beginning with the squash blossom fritters, gnocchi with arugula pesto, and risotto with prawns, and ending with a sumptuous ribeye for two, the fare was outstanding. Great wine list and terrific service will help us fondly remember our experience. I highly recommend L'amante to anyone looking for a delightful dining experience. They do it right here!!

went here on a friday night with an 8 o'clock reservation.. was pretty busy when we got there, but our waitress was very nice and gave us plenty of time to look over the menu. started out with the squash blossom fritters w/ taleggio cheese in honey and truffle oil, which was amazing! also shared gold & red beets with gorgonzola, watercress and balsamic, which was great and fresh. i had the risotto with pesto and shimp, which i was impressed with, and my dad loved his sea bass. my mom and friend had the orecchietti which they loved.. they have a great selection of italian wine, and their dessert (we got the chocolate mousse) was great with a cappuccino. the place cleared out around 10:15, which we thought was a big strange for a friday night. overall, it's wonderful italian cuisine, but its also a bit pricey if you're a college student. would say it's 2nd best italian in burlington--i'm a trattoria delia fan through and through.

So.... Burlington... L'Amante. I sat at the bar. Gooooood decision. Crowd was great, friendly, calm, intelligent, talkative! Very comforting and welcoming!! Bartender Ian knew his business.. Helped picking the right wine... And after having the most wonderful squash blossom fritters, he recommended the grilled quail. Haven't enjoyed quail that much in a while! To my surprise, gas grilled!!!! still best I've had in a long, long time!! For $28!!!!! 2-3* reviewers- Go back to NYC and get ripped!! Bottom line- will be back as soon as I can!!

Great food and wonderful service! They change their menus very frequently and they serve wonderful food every time I go there. The service is the best among all other restaurants in Burlington. They serve nice bread with their homemade pate too! Overall, it's a nice and a fancy place to eat, great for a dinner date and a fancy dinner party.

L'mante is a fav of my non vegetarian friends. As a vegetarian it's not my favorite place to go for dinner, however I LOVE getting drinks here at the bar. They have Ian the best bartender in town who can make an excellent espresso martini. This is a great spot for after work cocktails or wine.

Great place with wonderful service and excellent food. This uis a hidden gem... you have to look for it to find it but once you fo, you will be thrilled with your chouce. We recently went with another couple... all of the meals looked and tasted great... and then came the dessert - wow! It was outstanding. Plan to return in the future.

Definitely the best Italian restaurant in the area. You can always expect quality ingredients and phenomenal service. You can never go wrong with the bolognese, or the fritters. Their new eggplant ravioli dish is my favorite

Probably the best Italian in Vermont. That being said there isnt much good Italian in the state. Food is a little pricey for what it is.

One of our favorite spots in Burlington. We consider ourselves foodies, and my boyfriend is an NYC chef, so we rarely visit the same restaurant twice. We have been here on every visit to Burlington so that says a lot! The food while not fussy and over complicated is always delicious. It's Italian comfort food at its finest. The wine list is approachable and we have never had a bad glass. Squash blossoms are a must when available! However, they have excellent cured meats, which are always sliced perfectly, and wonderful Italian cheeses. They have great specials, and we love that the pasta dishes can come as a half or full plate portion. Which make them perfect for sharing multiple appetizers. The service is attentive, and quick to respond without being overbearing. If you come early you can sit at the bar or check out their sister win bar Vin two doors down! We highly suggest this place to anyone looking for a great meal!

There some dishes that are truly amazing and others that left me wondering what the point was. The signatures dishes are the potato encrusted sea bass and the basil ice cream with strawberries. Both of these are wonderful. Delicate flavors, wonderful textures. I thoroughly recommend these. The penne bolognese was average, the gnocchi with slow cooked pork was heavy and over composed. The candied squash blossoms were whack you over the head sweet (so if you like that, go for it). The boar sausage was average to good. The decor is modern and a bit sterile, the service was terrific.

I was being treated to a special diner. Since I wanted Italian I had 2 choices, I choose L'amante based on a Yelp review which described the duck. I love duck so it made the choice easy to make. However when the duck came out I knew I was going to be disappointed. The leg was overcooked, the skin was not edible and the meat under was well done. I do not ever send any thing back and did not want to make a first on a special meal but it was close. The green veggies were a mystery, all stems and tough. The squash blossoms were great but not enough for me to ever go back. Go early the acoustics are terrible and it is very noisy. This was our 3rd time here but now on I will go to the Trattoria delia.

Squash blossom fritters, whoa. I have never had such a delicate and tasty appetizer. Savory and sweet at the same time, with a delightful honey drizzle over all of them. Definitely live up to the hype. I had the orecchiette with crispy eggplant, which quite frankly, was the best. Fresh mozzerella was melted throughout, and the eggplant was in fact crispy, despite being slathered in red sauce and cheese. That's some science and magic at work right there. For dessert I had some homemade chocolate chip ice cream. Yum. A bit expensive, but visiting from NYC with a fellowship stipend in hand means I am eating at all of the fanciest restaurants. YEAH.

L'amante brings upscale Italian to downtown Burlington. There's nothing extraordinarily exquisite about the space, but it does feel a step up by Vermont standards. I attribute it to the dim lighting and the price. We started dinner with grilled calamari, radicchio, pancetta, and balsamic for our antipasti. The squid had a nice charred flavor and the balsamic balanced nicely with the radicchio. Still, I think I prefer battered and fried squid over grilled. The pasta courses here are fantastic. I wish we had ordered the smaller pasta plates as our appetizer. The penne bolognese was cooked perfectly al dente and the sauce was tasty. My favorite was the ravioli with mushrooms and asparagus. The flavor was very earthy and had me wanting more long after the six pieces of ravioli were gone. The basil ice cream with strawberries and balsamic was a simple dessert, but one of the most balanced ones I've ever had. You get the tang from the balsamic and sweetness from the strawberries, which blends well with the creaminess of the herbal basil flavor. What a way to end a satisfying meal. L'amante is a bit pricey for everyday fare, but if you're craving good Italian, it won't fail to satisfy.

I was underwhelmed and disappointed with the food at L'Amante. The appetizer was bland. The main courses were tasty but ordinary. The broccoli rabe was bitter and inedible. The fried polenta was forgettable. The waitress was indifferent and didn't grasp the opportunity to provide excellent service. The waitress never refilled the water glasses even though she walked by many times during the meal. I had an outstanding meal the night before at Church and Main (recommended by the same person) I guess one out of two isn't bad. When you pay upscale prices you expect an upscale experience. L'Amante missed by a mile.

Went on New Years Eve and got an evening-of reservation for a table in the bar. I'm glad we did because we had a great dinner. The bartender was our main server and he as friendly, jovial and attentive (he even gave us some concert tickets he wasn't going to use!) The place is nicely laid out and the ambiance is very nice. We ordered kind of weird - I got 2 small primi plates so I could get some variety since it was the same price as 1 large plate. I had the gnocchi with braised pork: delicious sauce and good amount of pork, the gnocchi were some of the best I've had, soft but slightly chewy and flavorful; and the orecchietti with broccoli rabe & sausage: this was outstanding as well, tasty pasta served in a light sauce, sausage was great and broccoli rabe was not overcooked. My wife got 3 vegetable sides: broccoli rabe with garlic, brussel sprouts w/ pancetta, and truffled mashed potatoes. Again, all great, good portions - I would recommend each one. Wish we had room for dessert although I didn't see any tiramisu.

L'amante just doesn't do it for me! As an Italian myself, I do tend to have high expectations for Italian cuisine. Despite positive reviews, L'amante feels like it is trying too hard, the food is grossly overpriced for what you get, and the atmosphere is sterile. The staff are attentive, but unfortunately our food came out extremely quickly for a restaurant touting itself as upscale. My glass of wine was skimpy, and the food was overall mediocre. Without a doubt our favorite thing we ordered were the squash blossoms drizzled with honey and truffle oil. It was delicious, but I wish for $11 that there had been more than four tiny squash blossoms on the plate. We also shared the grilled calamari, which I couldn't finish. For $11 I had to weed through the charred, overcooked radicchio doused in balsamic vinegar to find four measly pieces of calamari. Disappointing. The orecchiette with broccoli raab and sausage was good, but it should have been great. Overall the dish was bland and nothing special. I suppose the menu didn't lie when it said orecchiette with broccoli raab and sausage, since that's pretty much all it was. With Delia in town, it's hard to imagine ever returning to L'amante.

I love this place. For my money it is the best Italian restaurant in Burlington. I have eaten here twice and each time I've left full and found the price reasonable based on the quality of the experience. The entrees I've had, salmon and pork, were cooked to perfection. Even their simple pasta dishes are spectacular. The pasta is fresh and expertly prepared, the sauces seem simple but have a nice, complex, well developed flavor. I absolutely love their penne bolognese. What sets L'amante apart from other restaurants I've eaten at is their service. The waitstaff is on top of it here. They are friendly and very attentive. That goes along way in a sea of mediocre service in Burlington. We don't eat here often enough. It's not the price but rather because it's so good we try to save L'amante for big occasions.

  • Ben K.

The food was excellent the service was sub par. Water glasses were not refilled promptly and dishes were not cleared even though a server walked by numerous times. Then food was excellent though.

L'amante had been our list to try for a while. Assumed it would be along the lines of Trattoria, both are very good, but very different. We started with the whipped ricotta and calamari. The ricotta was delicious, the calamari was very disappointing. Not much meat, garnished with a very sour burnt leafy vegetable, skip it! Dinner made up for it. I had the duck, which was a large portion, leg and breast, nice crispy skin, along with some excellent sweet potato mash. My wife had the potato crusted sea bass, which I had to try for myself, it was excellent. Great wine selection, but must have drank too much as I was too full for dessert. I will have to try L'amante and Tratorria again to decide which holds the Italian title in Burlington.

As good as it gets in Burlington. Outstanding food and service. From the squash blossom appetizer (lighter than expected and not greasy), to the Penne Bolgnese (perfectly prepared pasta, complex tasting sauce and a nice kick that doesn't overpower), to the Potato Crusted Sea Bass (perfectly balanced and a nice secondi after the penne with a citrus beurre blanc you'll want to eat all night), to the espresso and shared Gianduja Mousse, Chocolate Ganache and Espresso Cream (lighter than you might expect) and Basil Ice Cream with Strawberries and Balsamic (yes, basil ice cream), everything was delicioso! Brava!! Thanks Alyson for a professionally-served meal (and for the inside "scoop" on the basil ice cream). No one would have guessed you were "new." Whether you're in Burlington for one night or more, make a reservation at L'Amante!

Girlfriend and I were able to snag a table for two on a Saturday evening with no reservation. I think it helped that we were dressed to impress. Great Italian wine list. Waitstaff knows the glass pours, which are few but excellent and decently priced. I highly recommend the Pico Maccario Piedmont Chardonnay. Food is delicious and well prepared. Get the squash bloomers (cheese filled), if available, as an appetizer. They come drizzled with tuffle oil and honey. I orderd the quail, which came with brussel spouts and fingerling potatoes glazed with marsala. Everything was tasty, not stand-out amazing, but very good. Portion was just about right too, leaving room available for dessert. Was tempted to order the basil ice cream with strawberries and balsamic, but we agreed to share the chocolate mousse. It came as a thick, dense slice of decadency. A fantastic finish to the meal, especially when coupled with espresso or cappuccino Overall, a pleasurable and satisfying fine dining experience with excellent service.

Really good Italian food! Friendly & attentive staff and owner. The other reviews are correct - start with the squash blossom fritters then segue to he Chilean sea bass and / or wonderful penne bolognese. Small bar so arrive early. Bon Appetite!

I think this place is good- but over priced. the food was good, not anything spectacular. I got the squash blossoms- they were a little greasy for me. I wanted something lighter. I also got the fish- with potato on top. food was good- drinks were ok. italian lemonade was terrible. blue cheese martini wasn't dry enough- and they are skimp on the olives.

We liked the manager for making excellent wine suggestions. We enjoyed sitting at the bar and didn't mind the dark, warm, cosy, intimate ambiance. The food was delicious - I had the osso buco and enjoyed every bite. We definitely would go back.

Attentive service, very pricey. We arrived at 830pm with a reservation and were promptly seated. Took a bit for our expensive martinis to arrive. Good, but nothing worth the 12$ each. Calamari was good but came perched on a huge piece of wilted cabbage that took up most of the dish. Flatbread was good; tangy sauce and super thin. I had the sausage and Rabe pasta, and my wonderful girlfriend got the duck. Duck was excellent but again came paired with a wilted vegetable garnish that was both garish and unappetizing. My pasta was average, but cost 23$! For pasta shells with very little sausage and some Rabe, I was robbed. We finished with a desert of hazelnut mousse cake topped with espresso cream, which was outstanding. Light and fluffy and had a pleasant understated flavor; simply awesome. The food was above average overall and the service was good, if a bit slow at the beginning. But the pricing is high for what you get, especially for pasta dishes. My recommendation is to definitely try the restaurant out, like we did. Just avoid the overpriced martinis and pasta and you might end up having a great dining experience. Oh and avoid the weird radicchio wilted mess that comes with most of these dishes, it tastes like grandmas socks. P.S.Our server, Lynn was very good.

I think L'amante is just trying too hard. I had a great time, and the food was decent, but the prices, the service, and the sort of ambience that tries too hard just kind of makes me want to go to Delia's or Leunig's. Here are my main points at L'amante: The grilled calamari - Rubbery, watery, and served over blackened. Disappointing. Chicken special - very good flavor and sauce, the truffled mashed potatoes were delicious. but the entire dish was WAYYY too salty. I had to drink three glasses of water. Unfortunately, those were two glasses of the people I was with because I got one glass of water and never got a refill from our server. Honestly, I'd expect that if you're paying $50 a person for a meal, I'd get some water refills, someone actually ASKING me if my food is good (especially if its an upscale restaurant, but at least just for courtesy), and good food. Unfortunately, that's not the case. BUT, I will give it 3-stars because L'amante is almost there...they just need some extra work.

I understand this is supposed to be upscale for Burlington...but if that is their goal, they are failing miserably. Friendly service and items on the menu look inspired and beautiful...if only the dishes came out that way. We ordered a mushroom-type bruschetta. The "bread" it came on was burnt, i mean charred. The bread looked like a burn victim in a 5 alarm fire. I was scrapping burnt sections off, trying to enjoy it as presented. I ended up just eating what was on top (which was very good). When I showed the waitress, she grimaced, as if to agree with us it was completely burnt, but said that is how it is served. When both of our entrees came they completely underwhelmed us. My raviolis were swimming in sauce and my fiancee's "balsamic infused onions" over his steak were drenched..it definitely appeared to be just a rushed meal. If the meal tasted as good as it read on the menu, I would have been A-OK paying the high bill...but after dealing with burnt app, and asking for napkins to blot off my ravioli I was really let down.

We were new to Burlington and despite being busy at 6pm on Saturday night, they made an effort to squeeze us in. Big plus to l'Amante. Waitress was very friendly and restaurant gave an upscale first impression, although the music was so quiet it could hardly be heard. Then we came to the food. Guys, you need help in the kitchen!! The Calamari came very quickly and was so undercooked we had to send it back!!! The second batch was charred and chewy like it was frozen!!! The main courses (chicken and grilled prawn risotto) were both reasonable but our side of Brussel sprouts were charred black and again were sent back. Our waitress was very accommodating when returning the food items but but it seemed that some of the other waitresses had more diner than upscale restaurant experience. All in all, our experience was ok but the restaurant could do better in the kitchen for the prices it charges. It does have a decent wine and cocktail selection though...

Quaint italian place with good atmosphere. Client dinner and it was not too loud so we could talk privately without being overheard from other tables. The squash blossoms appetizer were amazing. I had the Ravoli and Risotto in appetizer portions and there were good but not amazing. My client had the sea bass and it looked very good and he claimed it was too. A bit pricey tho....180 for party of 3 and only included 2 glasses of house wine, 2 appetizers and 3 meals.....???

We've been there many times. We love the food, until last night have always been happy with the service. We paid the bill with cash and left a 20% tip. As we were walking to the car our waitress walked out on the street and accused us of not paying our bill! My wife followed the waitress in. It turned out another server had cleared our table, took the money and placed it by the bar. We were embarrassed. The scene took place in front of other people leaving at the same time. I can't imagine too many people dine-n-dash the place. Maybe the owners should have a policy in place not to chase their customers into the street, just in case they actually paid. The L'amante security guard server didn't bother to apologize. We did speak to the owner the next day and he couldn't have cared less. We won't be back.

Everyone needs a neighborhood restaurant where the people know your name, are happy to see you and anticipate what you're hungry for before you even know yourself. For me, that's L'amante. The staff at L'amante take great care of every guest and it's clear that they are well cared for too: the turnover is minimal, so there's a family feel from the hostess, to the bartenders, to the waitstaff and back in the kitchen. The food: in one word, Splendid. We've shared this restaurant with friends who've traveled to Italy and each one has commented on the authenticity of the food. The flavors, the pasta, the sauces -- it's clear that great care is taken with each dish. Must-have: Squash blossoms. It is pricey, but when you're looking to treat yourself and share a wonderful meal with friends and family, L'amante will deliver.

I have never had even close to a bad meal at this lovely northern italian restaurant. From the simplicity of its decor, the knowledge of their staff to the menu of perfectly priced dishes....i love this place. Don't let yelpers be the judge though, i just read in Travel & Leisure that this restaurant was named top 32 in the country for Italian restaurants. Doesn't surprise me! The Bolognese is by far the best i've ever had and the duck is done to perfection.

We love L'amante! Food, service, ambiance -- all lovely. The pasta is wonderful (and they offer gluten free if you require which I, unfortunately, do), and the seafood dishes have clean flavors and preparation which is terrific. The bartender, Ian, is personable and professional -- a winning combination. Actually, the waitstaff are always terrific as well. L'amante manages this restaurant as well as any I've been to. I have to confess I typically order the green salad which is lightly dressed with never a rotten lettuce leaf, and the roast chicken -- mashed potatoes, leeks and a chicken jus that is also light and very well seasoned. But I haven't had a bad dish or a bad evening at L'amante, regardless of what I order. One of the best spots in Burlington FOR SURE!!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
