I come here every time I am in Burlington. That's a total of 2 times in Burlington and 3 eats here. I think that means that I really love this place, right?! Best drunk food ever. Open late (3a!) and delicious sober too.. The one time I was here sober. Not as good as the night before, but still really satisfying. The best items are the pakoras and the falafel. You probably don't need both if you're sober though. The pita bread is always really soft and toasty. The fillings are always loaded in there and my cup runneth over (sorry guys for the mess I made...)

Phil and Wayne were total jerks. Don't know if that were their real names but they were completely derogatory. Keep an eye out for two skinny teens with blonde hair, one with a ball cap. They will spit in your food.

Just enjoyed watching my husband vomiting in the bushes after a meal here. I specifically asked the girl behind the counter when she screwed up my husband order if there was sesame in the wrap she made. He has a very serious allergy, she said oh no not a problem at all. Immediately after leaving he felt irritation and swelling in his throat. This place is a joke, when we walked in she was irritated that we even came in because she wanted to eat her meal. Seems like the spot is not staffed correctly and to top it off they are not concerned at all with the well being of their customers. We will never go here again, if I could give less than one star I would.

I wish that I could give my favorite falafel/kabob hut 5 stars.... but I just can't... simply because when Ali Baba's goes on summer tour to certain music festivals, the quality is not up to par. They didn't bring the sweet potato fries to Camp Bisco this past summer... big :( for my company and myself. Although the breakfast burritos were pretty damn good, especially compared to the other crap that was offered @ Camp and All Good. When in Burlington, go here. Don't walk, run. You can't beat the price for the product. It is delish. Chicken, Lamb or Steak kabob pita, with a little hot sauce on the side... wow. Your taste buds will love you. Especially late at night, after a few rounds, you and your buds will likely find yourself waiting in line for this rather epic Burlington establishment. The falafel is pretty tasty as well. And the sweet potato fries - oh my lord, these things are seriously like crack. It must be some kind of hippy magic that Ali Baba's has over the sweet fries & honey mustard... they are just divine. Oh, how I miss you Ali Baba's, but I'll be back next time in VT.

I can safely say the Falafel sandwich at Ahli Baba's is the worst falafel sandwich I've had, it tasted more like fried balls of hummus than it did falafel. Falafel is not supposed to be smooth and creamy on the inside, it's supposed to have crunchy bits all the way through. It's supposed to have more flavor. My girlfriend got another sandwich, something that had curry in the name (bizarre for a middle eastern restaurant), which was equally as 'meh'. I'm very much a Falafel connoisseur (live in NYC), so I was very excited to see a Falafel place in Burlington that had good ratings - this was a disappointment. I haven't tried the kebabs, perhaps they're a lot better, but I'm not really inspired to go another round at it.

The lamb gyros are mad good here. I've been here 3 times and twice I got the lamb gyro, the other time they were out and I pzzzd out. They do have chicken and a veggie version, but what's the point. They have some seating, but its mainly designed for take out. It's really quick, you get your gyro within minutes, and the prices are good too. Love this place, only problem is that they may be out of lamb at times :(

I love Burlington, Vermont! It's so quaint. Once we arrived here, we decided to make a pit stop for lunch. I was craving for something ethnic. So, we picked this joint. It's a fast food joint with different types of pitas. I ordered a steak pita and my friend ordered the curry chicken one. We wanted samosas but they were out, so we ordered the pakoras. I have to say I have had better pakoras and gyros.

  • Girldrinkdrunk S.

This place is an outbreak of e.coli waiting to happen. There were flies everywhere and a filthy layer of film on everything. Gross. Our pakoras were burned on the outside and about five minutes undercooked on the inside. Same with the falafel. I did like the pita and the tzatziki. My brother said his gyro was "okay, but nothing special". How do none of those hippies not notice how disgusting it is in there? The owner should be ashamed.

I was in town for the Mardi Gras parade this weekend. Ahli Baba's looked to be over capacity when we arrived. It is an incredibly tiny place, but luckily, one of the two tables (not including the condiment counter w/ stools) opened up just after we ordered. The guy who took our order was nice enough and the food came out with record speed. The falafel was great, the chicken kabob was pretty good, but the sweet potato fries were delicious! And, they were served with honey mustard, which seemed very strange, but worked quite well. Definitely recommended, especially if you are in a hurry. You might even overhear some drunken, intellectual expounding on the current situation in the gaza strip, see a man with the biggest natural afro ever, and pick up the sex-issue of a local newspaper all in the same visit.

  • Aimee G.

I love love love Ahli Baba's! I've only been here when drunk, and they actually were flexible with my drunken requests which went something along the lines of..." So I don't want a kebab, and I don't want this or that. Can you just give me like a plate of chicken and a side of fried potatoes or something?" To which the cook actually fulfilled my request and a few minutes later I was standing outside in the brisk Vermont cold with a plate of chicken chunks an a side of fries! Thank you Ahli Baba, you made my drunken New Year celebration a little more splendid!

  • Katie K.

I loved this place, because I love me some kabobs... but then a distressing thing happened a couple years ago... this place got one of the LOWEST scores of any restaurant in Burlington by the Board of Health. And I got scared.

    (2)
  • Shane F.

Really great falafel! Super pita bread! The rest of the menu gets by but go for the falafel and pita. They have full complex flavors that I just haven't found anywhere else. Also, neither of the two is dry, something I find happens to lots of falafel and pita.

    (5)
  • Tulan K.

WE tried this place while leaving Burlington VT to go back home. I had high expectation but in the end it turned out just a MEH... i did not like the BBQ sauce on the pita with chicken. It should or would have been much better if it was done greek style with chicken and some feta and olives and veggies. The other problem with pita and sauce is you can not eat while walking after the top half is gone since everything is coming our and dripping and not different here. Had to throw 1/4 o it away. the taste was ordinary nothing special.

  • Alice P.

Stopped here for a quick bite while meeting up with a friend downtown. For the prices, I expected better. Service was quick, but the tables were dirty. The whole place was less clean than a fast food restaurant. The meat was so dry and not flavorful. The pita bread was not much better. The food tasted like it should be worth half as much as what I paid, which was almost $9. Very disappointing experience.

  • Lloyd R.

Went in o get a kabob but cashier wouldn't give me change for quarters to park. Just told me straight no and go to the bank it was rude.

  • Philip B.

My wife and I ate here before going out on the town. We ordered two vegetarian wraps. I thought they both were OK but not that good. To be fair, I'm a bit of a falafel snob. The prices are very cheap, fortunately. But the customer service was not great. The guy did a fine job getting our food but seemed displeased to serve us. There also is very little seating. That being said, I loved the vinyls on the walls.

  • Nicole G.

I love this place! Open late, but due to its location there are always a lot of college/ drunk students around! I love the chicken pita. LOVE it, crave it. I want one now, I hope my SO brings one home from work with him! It's messy and I'm always having little pieces of food fall onto the floor. Probably why the place is so dirty. If the food wasn't so good, I'd probably stay far away due to fears of bugs. Nothing unwanted in my food so far, so its all good! A few mildly uncomfortable places to sit while waiting for your food. Some pretty quirky/interesting/cool people that work here! Def not run of the mill employees, I love that too!

  • Antonio C.

A hole in the wall with very minimal seating but very good food. I had the chicken kabob pita and it was delicious. Good take out spot. Give it a try

    (4)
  • Laura K.

Meh. Two stars for the quick service and the Greek style pita. The falafel was strange. It was crispy on the outside but mushy on the inside. I've had Israeli and Mid-Eastern falafel but this one was different in a bad way. Also the sandwich was very dry and bland. The portions are huge so I'm sure that makes them a hit with the college crowd. Call me spoiled from eating all the delicious Middle Eastern food Detroit has to offer. This place just didn't stack up.

  • Andrew A.

Food was great. Parking can be a pain but it's in the city center. Again, great food, worth the drive and walk.

    (4)
  • Alyssa M.

Meh. The food wasn't bad but it was kind of greasy. Not the best falafel I've ever had. The inside of the place was pretty dirty and the bathroom smelled like cat piss!

    (3)
  • Stringtown A.

This is a wonderful little hole in the wall place. The staff was super friendly. And the food was nothing short of excellent, well seasoned and filling, and great combinations of flavors. Also it is very reasonably priced. Oh yeah, and the sweet potato frys were some of the best that I have had.

    (5)
  • Billy T.

I've been here twice and will never come back. I should've known better the first time i came. The place was so dirty. But I thought "i've been to plenty of hole in the walls that have had great food. Give it a shot". Mistake. Got the chicken curry pita. Bland chicken and hard bread. I came one more time, thinking "maybe you just came on a bad day", MISTAKE AGAIN. I got a breakfast burrito, which was super grease-y AND I got food poisoning. I will never come back to Ahli Baba's and I warn everyone away from this place.

    (1)
  • Robert C.

The place looks like a dump. But I guess some would call it character (maybe not the health inspectors). Surprisingly the gyros wasn't bad, a little greasy. But to me it's a good place for late night after drinking or a fast bite not a substitute for eating at a decent place.

I ate dinner here during my one night stay in Burlington... Had curry chicken wrap. It was ok.. The server/cashier was really funny.

  • Ron B.

Have eaten here twice. Pretty much street food fare that's made right when you show up, which is nice. Portions aren't especially huge, but a solid late dinner night spot when you're out with friends.

My mouth waters just thinking about this place. Kebabs are BOMB!!! Chiken or steak. U cant go wrong. Dont forget the hot sauce.

  • Jen R.

On a recent trip through Vermont, everyone told us we just HAD to check out Church Street in Burlington and find a cafe to dine in the marketplace. Well, we did that.. sort of. We did stroll along Church St and looked at several menus, none of which struck us as offering anything extraordinary and worth the prices they were listing. Off to the side, we noticed this interesting looking storefront and walked across the street to investigate further. As soon as we got a whiff of the smells coming out of the kitchen, we knew we had struck gold. Wow. Our kebabs were inexpensive and loaded. The lamb was so flavorful and the sweet potato side dish was divine. We sat in the window and watched the world go by while devouring our amazing meal. Great stop!

  • K. Brooke Z.

Its not long before I start craving Ahli Baba's after I leave the city. Their chicken kabobs keep me coming back for more. They even rock out with falafel. The place is too small to dine in, sometimes its a bit grimey. Part of the charm though?

    (3)
  • Melissa L.

Love the sweet potato fries and pakora! I've been here quite a few times and almost always get good service. One time a cook forgot to put in our meal. My friend and I didn't even realize that the wait had been longer than usual, but the cook insisted on giving us free cookies. Love that they care about their customers! The food is always well seasoned, flavorful, and properly cooked. The only down side is that it can get HOT in there in the summer!

  • Lindsay H.

As many posters have mentioned, this place is a cure for those drunk munchies after hitting the bar scene. My boyfriend and I stopped in after a few drinks, as the bartender had mentioned they were a late night stop. Open til 3am! The girl behind the counter was super sweet and recommended a special, the eggplant croquettes- chica didn't steer us wrong! They were AMAZING. This same girl was also the one to prepare our food as we waited. We also had the samosas, which I can only say were so-so, and the corn fritters, which were unlike any I've ever come across but definitely delicious with that garlic mayo. Got a couple pitas to go, made for an excellent hangover breakfast the next day. Mmm, try the veggie curry! All in all, good experience, would definitely stop back in next time we're back in town.

  • Tyler L.

Kebabs as good as those in Turkey in the middle of a ski paradise. Sometimes you just need to have a kebab and when in Burlington, the only game in town is Ahli Baba's. Thankfully, it is also very good. The kabobs are overflowing with meat and veggies but excellent. Service was friendly though a little slow probably because they had the munchies. There are a few uncomfortable stools to sit and eat at. Seems very popular with the locals as we got to hear a heated discussion about the best snowmobile repair shop.

  • Ron M.

If you're homeless, starving, and the meal is FREE, you may consider eating here... NOT ME..!!! My last meal was a free one, and I had 2bites of the sandwich and threw it out (I couldn't give it to a homeless person, least he may have been POISIONED!) NOT WORTHY, NOT WORTHY, NOT WORTHY... How do they have a food license?? The most disgusting food establishment in Burlington (maybe a tie with Manhattan Pizza). AVOID this place as if it's on fire!! The food, service, decor, and floors are all better/cleaner in any local DUMPSTER!! DO NOT EAT HERE! DO NOT EAT HERE! DO NOT EAT HERE!!!!! Understand??????

To the extent that I have some, I'll get the bona-fides out of the way. I was born in West Beirut, raised in Detroit, live in LA and have been back to Beirut recently for Lebanese food. I was raised on Lebanese food and have contributed to LA-Yelp heavily on this topic. Thus, when I recently went leaf-peeping to Vermont and poutine-hunting to Quebec City, I was happy to see that Burlington, Vermont had a Middle-Eastern restaurant. I read the reviews and did not expect too much based on them. Ahli-Baba (odd attempt at phonetic spelling) has a good location on the beaten path, very close to the Church Street marketplace. It is open late and tends to serve a college-age crowd who want a late night sandwich and do not want another burger. The place either suffers from an identity crisis or is trying to be the one "exotic" place in Burlington. Is it Lebanese? Is it Greek? Is it Indian? I guess its "other". I can almost understand the Greek-Arabic connection as somewhat "Mediterranean" or Byzantine or Levantine. But the Indian connection is lost on me. There are Arabic-Lebanese plates such as falafel and shawerma. There are Greek plates such as Gyros and Indian plates such as samosas (I forgot what Ahli Baba called them here). I tried the chicken shawerma. This was not really shawerma, as that requires a rotating spit where layers of spiced meat are sliced off the spit. This was chunks of white meat chicken (likely pre-cooked) that were then quickly heated on a griddle. The chicken was slathered with what they called a "barbecue sauce". No shawerma that I've seen anywhere else had a barbecue sauce. Its usually a dry rub of spices that are cooked into the meat, then a sauce can be used on top (sometimes garlic or tahini) but this was a tomatoey, spicy sauce. Thankfully the sauce was not sweet like American barbecue. That does not work in a savory sandwich like shawerma. The shawerma was then wrapped up in thick Greek-style bread. This is another melding of Arabic with Greek, as Arabs would use a much thinner pita bread for the wrap. The standard lettuce and tomato toppings and a creamy white sauce were added. The sauce was not very garlicky, but it had a touch of it. Its a messy sandwich, as the Greek bread is really not meant to hold these ingredients in place like a pita might. All in all, it worked to satisfy a late-night craving for a chicken sandwich with some spice. A shawerma? Eh. But it was palatable. The place is open late. They've got Orangina in the cooler and loud, headbanger music playing (at night at least). If someone opened an authentic Lebanese place in Burlington it would not harm the business at Ahli Baba. This is not a Lebanese food crowd. The Ahli Baba clientele falls under late night, x-other. Solid 3 stars. If it were somewhere else with some competition I'd say 2.5, but I like that someone up here is trying. If I were in the area and got a craving, absent any competitors, I'd likely come back. And since I think Burlington is a nifty town, I'll likely be back.

  • Mike T.

For just decent gyros, kebabs and some other food, this is an option when in Burlington. But as noted, it is only decent for taste. The setting is a bit cramped and it is not the cleanest restaurant by any stretch. The real offense to me was the gyro with not very much meat for a price higher than other places. At least give a good sized portion if you are going to charge high prices, sheesh. (staff was friendly fwiw)

  • Sherry C.

Hungry...dinnertime...Steak Kebobs... the meat was juicy and sauce was flavorful... but be forewarned, they're a bit messy. Meat juices/sauce tends to leak out the back. $7.50 total. Food is served wrapped in foil on paper plates, but they do bring it to you. Also, the guy at the counter gave me and my friend a free sample of Fiddle Heads. That's probably not the norm, but it was a nice bonus. Ahli Baba's doesn't have a whole lot of seating. They're the tall, bar-like tables that are not conducive for long conversations or dinner, but perfect if you're eating alone or want a quick bite.

My wife and I ate here a few days ago on the way out of BTV. Both of us were fairly pleased with our food orders. We both ate the steak kabob pitas, that were made in a timely manner of a portion size that is standard to its competitiors. They were both a little messy which I didn't think was a bad thing, since pitas can have that characteristic, just an observation. With two bottled drinks, the price came out to just north of $20. To me this is a little overpriced. However, it is in the city so take that with a grain of salt. People seemed to comment about the cleanliness and to a small degree, they are correct. This place isn't spotless and has a dinginess to it. This is mostly contributed by the interior materials used and is close proximity to the sidewalk/street with little frontage of eating space. The restroom is satisfactory. For a quick bite instead of the other typical options out there and you go in with expectations that would match its typology of a quick-stop street fare. I would recommend Ahli Baba's Kabob shop.

  • C M.

Burlington pretty much sucks. Give it a latitudinal change to a warmer climate and you change that. UVM definitely sucks. Reduce the tuition about 75% and you get a decent university. Ahli Baba's Kabob Shop rocks. Their chicken kabobs were one of the few redeeming qualities of Burlington. Their brownies were an added bonus too. When I have the misfortune of returning to Burlington, I ensure that I stop by Ahli Baba's for a nice respite.

Been eating here for close to a decade now and then...its always good for me- not many options like this around town , and for the prices, you get a good serving. Veggies always seem fresh as well. I'm a freak for Mediterranean food.

    (4)
  • Natalie P.

Service was fantastic! I ordered a falafel wrap and it was absolutely delicious--not to mention pretty reasonably priced. The pitas were fresh and soft, and the falafel itself was very tasty...went well with the veggies, hummus, and sauce. I had a bite of my friend's spinach wrap and wasn't a fan, but she seemed to like it. I'd go again to try some of their other sandwiches.

When we are in Burlington, we go here at least a few times. My sister came to visit and had a falafel sandwich she still raves about. We crave the food and we will keep coming back Friendly staff and fast counter service, This place is always a consistent pleasure!

Super delicious. Great choices. Can sit there or easily take it to go and walk around with your wrap of choice.

I REALLY wanted to like this place; I haven't had good falafel since I left New Jersey about three months ago and I'm a falafel addict. I seriously am in LOVE with whoever came up with mashing up chick peas, seasoning it, and frying it. I had an interview in Burlington and was excited that there were a few places that made falafel (I live in Springfield, no chance of a falafel joint around me). Ravenous after my never-ending interview, I walked to Ahli Baba's about 3:30 for lunch. I know one guy rated it as the worst falafel he'd ever eaten (I was hoping Ahli Baba had had an off day when he came in or we had different tastes when it came to falafel), I wouldn't rate it as the WORST, but it does come in second behind the falafel I tried at a mall food-court (I was so excited to see falafel on the menu after not having it for three months, that I ordered it without asking myself if I really wanted falafel from a mall food-court...) I liked the open-air, small restaurant as soon as I walked in and the guy behind the counter was nice and helpful. I paid $9 for my falafel wrap and side of pakora (they were out of samosas). I noticed first that the falafel wasn't golfball sized or shaped, not that they have to be uniform, but these were more like falafel blobs. As I bit into it and realized how soft and mushy it was inside, I realized the falafel probably wasn't firm prior to frying it, hence the blobs. The outside of the falafel, though, was hard and way too crunchy, like it was burnt. I didn't know you could burn fried foods, but you can and it doesn't taste good. So the outside way too hard, the inside way too soft. Then, the tzatziki was completely bland and flavorless, too....Strike three, you sorely disappointed me, Ahli Baba :-( Oh and it was SO salty, 6 hours after lunch, my mouth still feels like the Sahara...I guess strike 4

Of all the spots in Burlington, I think I miss this the most. The only time in my life I've ever eaten two falafel sandwiches in one sitting. It's that good. In fact I might have to come back to visit to go for three. :)

This place is amazing! Had the Lamb Pita and pakora, both of which were really fresh and completely stellar. Great service and cool vibe, although it is small and seating is limited. Would definitely tell anyone passing through burlington to check this place out.

I've only dined her VERY late at night and wasted; so the following review will be portrayed by my drunk self. DUUUUUDE! Holy f*cking sh!t this place is good. Man I'm so freaking hungry. God, I drank way too many beers. Like how many places did we go, man? What Ales, Red Square, Three Needs... f*ck man we even went to Ake's...hahaha f*ucking Ake's man. Oh man this is soo freaking good. Seared lamb or goat or whatever meat cooked perfectly and shoved deep in a huge pocket of pita bread man. And that white sauce man. Haha, I don't know what they put in this sh!t but it's so f*cking good. I love you Ahli maaaan!

    (5)
  • Karl R.

The positive and negative reviews are puzzling. This joint is relentlessly, determinedly mediocre. Which, believe me, late at night can be a godsend. Everything I've tried is odd, sort of hopefully exotic in a half-assed way. It's like trying to reproduce a magazine recipe using whatever's on hand, the result being visually recognizable as whatever it's called but not actually tasting anything like it. No surface is clean and you're much better off not getting a glimpse of the kitchen. I've never had anything here that lacked a certain subtle rancidity. Often the air itself smells over-used. Fun people work here, fun people eat here, and applying culinary or authenticity standards to basically street food is fundamentally inappropriate. So take it for what it is: it's a food truck. It doesn't show up at county fairs but it cranks out cheap, fast, not-utterly-boring food using cheap, fast ingredients and cheap, fast methods. It's turned a profit and paid wages for a long time, feeding drunks and street people. There's something to be said for that. Tailor your expectations, take extra napkins and have a good time.

Prior to moving to the Burlington area, I wasn't expecting much in regard to ethnic cuisine. But surprisingly, the quality/variety of asian/indian places is really good for a small city. Not so with middle eastern food, which is really a shame. This place gets 3 stars almost entirely because it has no competition. The chicken kebab I had was certainly not bad, but it was forgettable. I had to pick the mushrooms out because I hate them and didn't notice they were an ingredient because seriously who puts mushrooms in a kebab/shawarma. And the lack of a pickle is unforgivable. The place itself is minuscule, there are like 3 tables, one of which doubles as the condiment counter.

  • JohnnyFoodface ..

This is the best falafel I've ever had. I now live in Boston area, and all the "authentic" falafel down here tastes like crap compared to my fond memories of Ahli Baba's in Burlington. As Shane F. mentions, the falafel has a complexity of flavors not found elsewhere. And I've had my share of Falafel around New England. The Pita is soft and tasty, the veggies are fresh, and the yogurt sauce is also very tasty. The falafel is fried, but it isn't hard or crunchy. It has a soft warm mash to it that I have yet to see reproduced. And on top of that, they have sweet potato fries. Fantastic!

    (5)
  • Quinn S.

Great for late and greasy. It's a good Kabob/Gyro shop, and they have realty tasty sweet potato fries. It's cheap. The guy behind the counter is always friendly, there's usually a spot to sit, despite the small number of seats and it is in a great central spot. Their falafel is pretty good too.

Late night, If your drunk, Go here and not Kountry Kart. It is a better spot. Better service and cooler place, and you can sit in there. Kountry Kart has the rep but this place got the food. I have never ate this food sober but thats where I stand. Good chicken and steak wraps and also i have heard good falafel.

Stop by this place for a quick bite on my way to Montreal. Service was quick and food was pretty good, but nothing special. Place itself is a hole on the wall in a good way.
