Ok, we arrived in Staunton as a stopping point on a long drive from Atlanta, GA to New York. The Hometown Grill and Buffet happened to be 1/4 mile from the Sleep Inn we stopped at for the night (separate review on hotel) and we got a 10% discount for showing our hotel key. It's a local grill and buffet joint that's pretty much a hole in the wall type of place. The food is not spectacular but for two very tired folks who had been driving all day, it hit the spot. First off let me say that Calvin was a most pleasant host for the dinner. Friendly service you'd expect from a southern, down-home joint. We did not arrive until after 8:30pm so the hot food had probably been sitting out on the buffet for a while. Some of it was somewhat dry, but sauces did help with that. The fried fish was flaky and not bad, especially with the tartar sauce. I thought I would be "healthier" by opting for the roasted chicken over the fried chicken, but honestly the fried chicken was the best thing on the buffet along with the mashed potatoes. The salad bar was decent and fresh and certainly a healthier option. My wife being a vegetarian, there was really nothing on the buffet other than the salad so she had them make their Spaghetti dish with just the tomato sauce, which also came with the salad buffet. She was pleasantly surprised that the pasta was not overcooked. So this is not a four star restaurant nor is it a Golden Corral but for two weary travelers, it was very convenient and it definitely hit the spot. The friendly service was definitely appreciated.

Need to add better options to the food bar. Been three times for lunch and always the same. Fried Chicken, fish or taco. Salad bar is good. Hit food bar ooks like something I could go to the grocery store and make myself. Tastes the same as if I made it and I am a bad cook. It could be better and I know these folks can make it better. I will try again. They are very nice and have great service. It is also much cleaner than when it was Shoneys. Just need to work on food and options.

I've been in the restaurant and catering business for many years in the Staunton, Va area and always want to give a new restaurant a chance. However, My husband and I went to the breakfast buffet over the weekend and found there to be too much processed food. The biscuits were not from scratch, a nasty canned cheese sauce on the line was also in their hash brown casserole and cheesy grits. Potatoes were a heat-and-serve frozen item also. The staff was very friendly and service the was great. The restaurant itself was very nicely decorated but that did not make up for the poor quality of food.

I think this restaurant is a hidden gem. The chef/cook makes it sparkle. I enjoyed perfectly cooked uniquely seasoned catfish. Added was a wonderfully flavored medley of fresh vegetables which were seasoned and steamed to perfection. Breakfast eggs were cooked exactly as ordered. Not many restaurants serve real fried ham these days but this one does. Very delightful in all.

My wife and myself went on a Saturday evening and both of us had the buffet. The buffet had very limited options and what they did have was horrible. The soups and pastas clearly have been recycled and reheated several times and were tasteless. As for the salad bar the iceburg lettuce was the only item that was fresh, the mushrooms were brown and when I say brown I mean like brown slimy like a slug, they also had spinach but that was wilted and slimy as well. Also on the bar was fried popcorn shrimp and fried chicken that was OK and a few sides such as Mac n cheese, mashed potatoes and corn (yet again have all been recycled and reheated several times). I will say the waiter seemed nice and the place itself seemed clean but already decided not worth a second visit especially since the kicker was when received the bill. Each buffet was $11.99 and was called a "seafood" buffet (really seafood buffet with only popcorn shrimp). We asked the cashier if we were charged correctly and were told the previous night was the seafood buffet but the price was the same for Saturday cause it was their pasta buffet. WHHATTTTT????? Charged for a seafood buffet but only get reheated pasta. They are most definitely ripping people off with that. Save your money and your tummies and just totally bypass this place. WORST BUFFTT EVER.

My husband and I love to go for their breakfast buffet. They always have a good selection of foods, @ least 2-3 meat selections, 2 potato selections, 2 egg selections, usually 3 gravey selections, biscuits, frencf toast sticks, grits, bread pudding, variety of sauces and additives for foods, fresh fruit cottage cheese , yogurts, and I'm sure that I have forgotten a lot. We have never had bad service. The waitress tells you at the beginning if you want pancakes or waffles with the buffet to let her know and she will get them for you. Every one there has been so very nice every time we go. samsung.com/us/showcase/… m.facebook.com/recover/i…
