This is the only Vietnam restaurant (that I know of) that serves Jicama root rolls. We've tried to make it at home, but the way they grill those onions is hard to copy. The staff is friendly, the service is fast, and the food is great. Also, the majority of their main meals are BBQ'd. My friend is not a fan of exotic mint/cilantro leaves, but she really enjoyed the grilled BBQ chicken which is tasty and not bland. I like the BBQ tofu with vermicelli noodle. Make sure to try the flan dessert.

I used to LOVE this place, always go there for the pho. But my last visit makes me never want to go back again. We only waited like 5 min our food already came out, this worried me and my worry came true. First the pho is super mushy, taste like recook. Then the broth that used to have great flavor is really bland, seems like they add some water to thin it out, plus it's not even hot! There are only few pieces of meat. I also order crispy spring roll, it's not crispy and very greasy, the dipping sauce is so thin, there's almost no flavor to it. Anyway, I don't know what happened to this place but it's nothing like before. Maybe other food is still good, I don't know, but I only eat pho and crispy spring roll, so it's a done deal for me.

I eat the Pho and Vermicelli bowls regularly for lunch. Great fresh food, and great value. Staff is friendly and pretty effecient.

A 3.5. The pho here was good, but I prefer Pho So 1. They have more selection than just pho and grilled meat on bun or rice and that's why I'd go again. My mom got the Hu Tieu (a pork based soup with clear noodles, with pork, shrimp, quail egg) and she liked it. Service was fast. Ambience was like an average pho shop. Can go next door for some bubble tea and stop by Tan-A for groceries after you are done eating.

I love this place and I have been coming here for years. I usually get the vegetarian crispy rolls and BBQ Tofu Vermicelli. It is a laid back place, if you order a Coke it will come in a can with ice in a glass. Otherwise you get iced water. It is so good I once sat at the door entrance table since there were no other tables and it was so cold. Freezing, and in the middle of winter, but worth it.

We've got a lot of Vietnamese restaurants clustered in this area. So why should someone go here? PROS: - Excellent BBQ Pork on Vermicelli - Excellent Jicama Spring Roll - Fast Service, Fast Check out - Consistent Service - Owner's daughter is cute CONS: - Wish they cut up the BBQ more (they give a a steak knife tho) - Not the place to go for Pho - No extra napkins or spoons on the table - Some of the young waiters are kind of dorky Overall, I like going here. When I'm craving pho soup I go somewhere else though. Today I overheard some white guy ordering beef and broccoli here...come on people. Get the food stuff! 4 Stars. I'm not in love with it like I am some places, so not 5 stars.

Folks, this is the ONE! Every time my hubs and I go there we say we're going to try something different but each time we cave in and get # V8 - that's an easy one to remember ("I coulda had a V8"). It's the House Grill vermicelli. It is so flavorful. Ask for extra fish sauce or peanut sauce if you'd like. I usually add the fish sauce that comes with it and then add a little dash Sriracha sauce too (spicy...yum!) Try it, you'll like it! Prices are good and food is wonderful!

Vietnam 1 is good, but definitely not great. Here is my quick break down: Crispy Spring Rolls - Very good. They are lighter than everyone else's but not as good as Mekong or Pho So 1. BBQ Pork Paper Rolls - Amazing. These are the best rice paper rolls I've had yet. I also love that they are served with fish sauce rather than the traditional peanut sauce. Pho - Below Average. The meat is actually probably the worst of the possible Pho joints. The broth is much heavier in the Clove and Anise Star flavors in I would bet money they don't use oxtails like they should. The onions aren't thinly shaved either and my biggest peeve... no cilantro. It wasn't bad really, but only Pho 79 is worse. (And Friend or Pho but they are a joke and shouldn't be counted.) Black Tea - Amazing. Truly this is the best black tea I've had yet. Prices - Same as all the others. $7ish dollars for pho, $2ish dollars for spring rolls. Biggest pro: Spring Rolls Biggest con: No Boba Tea!

Love their lunch specials. Great service and great food all the time. I'd say it's the best and most authentic in the area!

There is a great debate as to the best Vietnamese place in the area. This small section of Richmond seems to offer many excellent choices. Vietnam 1, however, is my personal favorite. Lunch, dinner, take-out... All good. I love the pho and the vermicelli noodles w/ BBQ chicken.

    (5)
  • Nathan H.

Felt a little strange going to Vietnam 1 and not getting pho, but I wanted to try something different. They have a great selection of lunch specials, too! The spicy ginger chicken was great and got me sweating, even if it wasn't spicy hot like you think it will be.

    I. love. Vietnam1. When you walk in the door, just make a brief eye contact and nod to the wait staff, and sit wherever you like. In a flash, they appear to take your drink order. For people like me, who don't speak Vietnamese, and don't like to butcher another culture's language, the easy letter/number system of ordering dishes is great, and doesn't feel embarrassing like other restaurants I've visited. Food comes out very quickly, in large quantities, and is EXCELLENT. In warm weather, I go for either a broken rice dish or a vermicelli bowl, but when cold weather comes back, it's all about the pho. Lots of options for your ingredients (I go traditional and include the tripe). When you're done, just go on up to the cash register, and they have your ticket waiting for you. It never costs much, prices are the same at lunch and dinner, and there are little Vietnamese candies while you pay. All in all a wonderful experience.

  • Tuan N.

Great pho, but its not on Pho So 1's level lol.

    (4)
  • Charlie Z.

Very good Pho although the offerings are beef-heavy (tendons, beef eye, etc...) Cheap, tasty, and simple.

  • Alexandria V.

The first time we came here, a woman dining solo told us, "You can't go wrong. Everything on the menu is fresh and really good." She was right. This place really does not skimp out on using fresh ingredients. The vegetables in the Vermicelli are always raw and fresh, never steamed. The noodles are clean, and they don't add any sauces for you (thank you). The soups here are also delicious. They probably have the best wonton soup in Richmond that I've tasted.

    (4)
  • Anh N.

Good place for variety, but if you are looking for great pho then not the place, the pho is OK only, but they do have many other soups that is pretty soup. The spring rolls are like any other Vietnamese restaurants, bad; never enough shrimp just a whole bunch of noodles and vegi. Services are a little better than the typical VN service

    (4)
  • Jeff B.

Love this place. Eat here every time I'm in Richmond. This place has the best Pho and great spring rolls! If you like Vietnamese, you have to eat here. Friendly service. Amazing food. Great Prices.

  • Nancy L.

My favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Richmond. The BBQ meats are grilled to perfection on pho or vermicelli. I like Vietnam 1's soup broth better than Pho So 1. Its clean and fresh with lots of flavor.

    (5)
  • L R.

I've tried Pho So 1 because of the reviews on Yelp and then tried Vietnam 1 and thought Vietnam 1 was much better. I love Pho Thai and flavor of the broth is where it's at. The broth was much more flavorful and tasty. The service was also much more attentive. Would recommend.

My favorite Vietnamese spot in Richmond, possibly even my favorite restaurant. Love the BBQ Pork Vermicelli. I go 8 people deep once a week.

  • charles J.

a great quick lunch spot. the pho is good, but pho so 1 has better, however i dont always feel like just pho and the more diverse menu here brings me back. last time i went i had the ginger chicken...very nice. the BBQ meats are all fantastic. i do agree with another review that sometimes the spring rolls have too much herbal flavors, but most times i just love them. service is always quick and correct and it is convientently located right next to Tan A, where i often pop in and do some shopping on my lunch break. take out is available and is great for nights when i just want to stop in on the way home from work and pick up some food. i frequently take people who have thier not had vientamese food before, or who have only had Pho, here because the menu is fairly diverse and has several non spicy options in it for those who dnt get down with heat.

Found this place on Yelp last night and it was terrific. I highly recommend the grilled pork which comes with cucumber, basil, lettuce, rice noodles and rice paper and a great dipping sauce. You get to roll your own and it's terrific!

  • Jeff S.

this place is almost as good as mekong. slightly cheaper and has no atmosphere for dinner. but it's a lunch spot from heaven. i love it when i'm getting lunch on the fly. lightning fast, friendly service even when it's packed.

don't expect a lot of atmosphere, but this is richmond's strongest vietnamese restaurant. cheap, fast, excellent pho.

I had lunch here before picking up someone from the Staples Mill Amtrak Station. Since I was short on time, I only got to quickly glance at the menu. I ended up ordering the ubiquitous "Pho #1". There was only one size available for $7.95 (+$2.00 for extra noodles). As always, I tasted the broth first. It was tasty, but not quite as rich and flavorful as Pho So 1's pho base. Also, the bean sprouts were not as fresh-looking. I would have liked more tendon and tripe too. The decor was very nice, better than a lot of Vietnamese places I've eaten at (of course, the food is what matters most). All in all, I enjoyed my meal and want to come back to try some of the other dishes.

  • Oliver L.

I should be a pho consaur? Lol, Just another place that bites the dust, with Pho So 1 new grand opening, thats pretty much what people are aiming for. Some how i am still impress how other pho place keep busy and this place does stay busy at times as well. Im gonna have to give it 3 stars

One of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants in Richmond! Their BBQ is awesome and I haven't found another restaurant in Richmond that does it like they do....in my opinion, the chicken, shrimp, and tofu are the best. It's great with the broken rice or rice noodles. You can even mix and match any way you want it (even if it's not specifically on the menu) just let the waiter know and they'll get it done. The reason I'm giving them 4 stars is because that's all I like from Vietnam1. I don't really like any of their noodle soups...and the Pho is better at Pho So 1 in my opinion.

  • Megan M.

Vietnam 1 is one of my favorite spots for lunch on the go. It's pretty much the Vietnamese equivalent to a diner: not much decor, lots of tables and chairs, quick efficient service. I've had the rare beef pho and the vegetarian pho here. Both were tasty. Flavorful broth, lots of noodles and they come with copious amounts of basil, jalapeno, lime and sprouts for adding. I almost always start my meal with the jicama roll, a fresh roll with jicama used in place of noodles. I love the crunch and fresh flavor the jicama adds. The House-Grill Vermacelli bowl here is also a hit. A selection of barbecued shrimp, chicken, pork and crispy spring rolls sit atop vermacelli noodles, lettuce, cucumber, bean sprouts, carrots and basil. The meat is all very flavorful from the grilling technique, and it combines perfectly with the rest of the stuff for a big bowl of noodley goodness. The barbecued shrimp are the best here, if you're looking for one meat instead of many. Add some hot sauce, dip in fish sauce and it's a sweet-spicy goodness at its finest. You can even add a crispy spring roll into the mix for a bit of an upcharge. Thinking about all the fresh flavors and they way they blend together perfectly is making me think I might have to go here for lunch today. That's how good it is. Service is always friendly, but it's also efficient. They are trying to move people in and out, especially at lunch or on rainy days when there's a line out the door for soup. It's not a place to come and linger. It's a place to dive in, eat, and make room for more people. Note to those who haven't been before: even though there's waiter service, you pay at the counter. Just let the cashier know where your table was.

I was in Richmond this week for two nights, and I ate dinner at Vietnam 1 both nights!!! EXCELLENT broken rice and vermicelli dishes - thanks for the tip on the House Grill Vermicelli - I could NOT stop eating it and almost licked the bowl clean! I also loved their coconut juice (with slices of coconut!). Thanks Tim D. for the tip on just heading to the register to pay at the end of the meal. In and out within 30 minutes with a belly full of amazing food. What's not to love?? I'm so craving this right now...

Overall, my review can be summed up as good, but there's better. The reason for this is that some things are good, but others leave much room for improvement. Good pho, but the spring rolls have far too many harsh-tasting herbs...a mixture of licorice-tasting basil (as opposed to sweet basil) and mint and it all adds up to a pretty offensive flavor. Bear in mind that this comes from one of the least picky eaters I know---me! And I love strong flavors, but stuff like this is where I draw the line. Great banh xeo and that's the main reason I'd go. The banh xeo isn't greasy at all and this is one of the few places in the area that has it, besides Mekong (where it's terribly greasy and unappetizing). Banh xeo is 5 stars. The price was right, service was good, and atmosphere was just fine. I just like to know that I will enjoy everything I order, and it bugs me that I can't count on good fresh spring rolls (AKA summer rolls--not fried) at this place.

My favorite Vietnamese restaurant in Richmond (or anywhere else for that matter)! Love the vermicelli (especially the bbq pork!), shrimp garden rolls, and the pho. There are a lot of good options in the area, but this one is my favorite!

Found this place after a search for banh mi ended in despair and Catina was closed. Decided, since we were all starving, to give Vietnam 1 a go. SO glad we did. Food was excellent, staff friendly and accommodating, the place was immaculate. We asked the server to bring out whatever he thought were the best dishes for our table of 5 to share... he was happy to do so and soon we had Vietnamese BBQ, catfish, seafood fried rice, shrimp and jicama rolls, and delicious pho with the best balanced broth I've ever tasted. Finished the meal with very nice iced coffee. Go, you will be glad you did. Much better than Mekong where the wait is ridiculous these days. if you want a seemingly endless supply of Belgian beer, go to Mekong - it isn't bad at all BUT if you want top-notch Vietnamese food do yourself a favor and try Vietnam 1 instead. I am looking forward to returning, often.

We got some pho takeout from here. Everything was very good, with the exception of the beef broth with meatballs - the meatballs were not flavorful and had a weird texture. There was nothing particularly different about their pho, but it was of high-quality. They did have a nicely spicy green pepper in it that added a nice touch. I'd easily go here again.

Better Pho than Mekong! See prior review around a bad Asian bakery to get a frame of reference as to how I felt when I entered here. Well needless to say it is the neighbor of both Tan A and a bad Asian bakery but despite its unassuming plain exterior it is the best out of the lot. I had the pho and the portions were what you expect, huge but the quality does not suffer at all despite the big portion. It seriously took us longer to order than it did for the waiter to reappear with the piping hot soup, always a plus. The price was really cheap for high quality stuff. Just as an FYI, when you are ready to pay, just walk over to the counter. They keep your bill handy right there waiting for you (Realized this after sitting at the table for five minutes kind of just twiddling thumbs).

My mom and I went here today, and we really enjoyed the food. We split a wonton noodle soup and a bbq beef vermicelli dish. The chicken broth was incredible, and the wontons were also good. The vermicelli dish was also great; however, I wish that it was cut up into more manageable pieces so I could eat with chopsticks without having to cut the meat up.

I had high hopes for this place. Unfortunately I was let down gently. Maybe it was because I love Pho 1 so much, and thus by comparison Vietnam 1 couldn't win. The Pho was just okay and not as flavorful (as the other place). Same goes for the crispy fried rolls. Just to be fair, I dined here a 2nd time and ordered something different: a chicken curry stir fry with soup. It was okay. All in all, this is decent and affordable place to dine with fast service.

I got to be honest. At any Vietnamese Restaurant I go to I usually get the same 3 things. Spring (or Fresh) Rolls with Shrimp and Pork, a Vermicelli, and a Pho. I usually share this with my special lady. So I cannot comment on too much of the menu here, but what I have had has been excellent, and I would believe the rest of the menu items are of similar quality. Pho here is amazingly good. And the House Vermicelli makes the 'What meat?' decision an easy one, because you get a little bit of almost everything: pork, shrimp, chicken, and crispy roll. Definitely my favorite Vietnamese in Richmond (so far).

I have been coming here forever and it never disappoints. Be forewarned: this is not your dressed up dinning experience, clearly money is not invested into the decor and it does look like a cafeteria when you walk into it (all good signs when dealing with an Asian restaurants). This past time I ordered the (N6 - I think) Hoanh Thanh Mi. Its soup (beef broth) that has egg noodles, small pieces of roast pork and pork dumplings. You can dress it up very similarly to how you would Pho or eat it as its served. This to me is one of their best dishes. The soup has great flavor that mixes incredibly well with the egg noodles. The dumplings and roasted pork add nice surprises to the dish. I would tell you this place is a must to check out if you want solid Vietnamese food. Here are few of my favorite dishes: -Hoanh Than Mi (N6) -BBQ Pork with broken rice (R1) -Pho Tai - Pho with Round Eye (P4) -Pho with Vegetables (P10) -Bun with BBQ Tofu -Bun with BBQ Pork Enjoy!!

Undoubtedly the best Pho in town. Have been going here for over a decade and am yet to have a bad experience. It's a great family run restaurant, great for all Pho lovers.

Oily broth, otherwise good pho ... No frills pho joint with decent food. Lost a star due to oily broth, but is still very flavorful. Quick service and reasonable price.

Quick friendly service in a comfortable dining room. Spring rolls were fresh and delicious. Pho came out piping hot. I had the flank and steak, meat was tender and flavorful. Really liked the broth. Coming from Denver where there are many good pho spots, this place was on point. Definitely recommend you check it out.

I had the fried dumplings but I didn't care for them much. They were clearly frozen and were oozing with water. I didn't expect them to be so chewy. Meh. I had the Bun Bo Hue, which is a spicy beef stock and lemon grass noodle soup. The flavor of the broth was good and the goodies were plentiful. It was on their current special list, so it was delicious. My girlfriend had the Gio Ga (chicken salad). This was very disappointing. I was expecting the usual Vietnamese salad that consists of pickled carrots, lotus root, cucumbers, cilantro, mint leaves etc. Instead, she got iceberg lettuce, dry carrots, and bean sprouts. The chicken was ok and had some sort of bbq sauce on it.. She said it was good. But for my Vietnamese tongue, it was not exciting. 3 stars because the Bun Bo Hue saved the lunch. Mmy girlfriend liked her dish, but I wouldn't order it again. See the two photos I attached.

With so many Vietnamese pho cuisines in Richmond (2 others within one mile radius), why should you choose this one? Here's the equation: Vermicelli + BBQ pork + large portions = no brainer. As you can tell, I absolutely love vermicelli* and I particularly enjoyed their flavorful BBQ pork. Plus, there is plenty of parking and the restaurant on a late Friday evening appeared less crowded than its fellow surrounding pho restaurants. Long story short, I'll definitely be giving this another try should the desire for noodles hit me again. *A hint for those who think vermicelli is plain tasting: pour in the sauce that comes with your noodles--that's where all the flavor is (yummm).

I recently went to Vietnam 1 for a bowl of Pho after two Pho restaurants nearby were closed because it was Monday. I usually look for Pho places with small menus indicating they specialize in the soup and because of Vietnam 1's larger seeming menu it was not my first choice. I should not have been so quick to judge! We ordered two different Pho (combination pho and a seafood one), and an appetizer of shrimp rolls. The shrimp rolls were average though their accompanying sauce was delicious. The Pho was great! Very solid brother, not too oily and tasty noodles. Served with traditional accompaniments along with a variety of sauces (plum, fish, soy, chili paste, siracha) to season the bowl. Resulting in a delciious meal at a very reasonable price.

I love Vietnam 1! It is so delicious and fresh and the service is wonderful. We can be in and out in 30 min. There's always a table also. Everything is so good, but the highlights are the crispy spring rolls and the wonton soup. It is the best Vietnamese in Richmond in my opinion.

  • Jess H.

I need to bump this place up a star, because in all the times I've returned to eat here, their food has left me more than satisfied. I've since moved on from their pho to try other items on the menu, like wonton & bbq pork egg noodles, broken rice, spring rolls, and mini dumpling soup. Everything has been consistently delicious and served up super fast. I rarely finish all my food, but here I will clean my plate/bowl/trough/receptacle. Also, I'm gonna let all y'all in on a secret. Their Thai iced tea? The best in Richmond. The best. I travel all the way down Broad just to sit there and order a Thai tea (lame). It's worth it!

The broth here was very beefy. It's a good thing! Small dive, again a good thing. The iced coffee wasn't made table side and was a bit on the watery side of things. The noodles were pretty decent, but not that great. The summer rolls here are a no-go for me. The fish sauce was meh, but more than that the grilled pork was dry and chewy. The wrapper was old and tough. Definitely to anti-highlight of this meal
