A friend and I ate at The Savory Grain last night for an early dinner. The food was wonderful, the people are very friendly, well besides the patrons sitting next to us who kept staring at us periodically all night before they left ("wonder" what that was all about) any who, the servers are very nice and the restaurant itself although fairly small was comfortable and nicely appointed. They have a huge selection of beers and the drinks are pretty strong. I would have given them a five star rating had the food not taken forever to get to our table (insert anal fat girl here).

Good food. Nothing really amazing or jaw-dropping but just a great meal with a great ambiance. The price for the food is just right even a little underpriced for what you get. Definitely will go here again.

If this place isn't at the top of your list to go to, move it there now. The food is amazing. The staff are friendly and engaging. I'll definitely be back!!

Ok, Savory Grain! You get a well deserved upgrade. I still very much enjoy the decor and service, but this time the food was so much better. First of all, the homemade bread that comes out before your meal is bananas. I completely devoured it and so did my bf. This time, I wasn't all that hungry, so I decided to go with a soup and salad. I ordered the wedge salad and clam chowder. Both were amazing! The clam chowder was unlike any other clam chowder I've ever eaten. I wouldn't even call it a chowder. It was more like a broth consistency rather than the creamy kind I'm used to. It was delicious! I tore it up. Then, I started working on the salad. Some bites were a little bitter, but it was an excellent wedge salad. My boyfriend got a fried chicken dish with grits and veggies. He said it was the most well-cooked chicken he's ever had. I can vouch and definitely confirm that it was juicy and crunchy-- just as it should be! The grits were phenomenal as were the veggies. Bravo! This is now in our regular rotation.

Broad Street itself is not exactly the most attractive spot in the world, so stepping from it to the inside of the Savory Grain is like day and night! Chic and classy, with great food, great table set up, and a live duet playing in the corner while we ate brunch! My only critique is wishing they had kept their menu more up to date. I had seen pumpkin pancakes as an option online, only to walk in so excited to try them and realizing they were a seasonal dish, with blueberry pancakes in their place. My Benedict meal certainly made up for it, but I am now very much looking forward to going back in the fall.

Amazing food. Great for brunch, lunch, and dinner. Cocktails are unique and always delicious. Service is always good and nice atmosphere where they often have live music. Highly recommend and you won't go wrong with anything on the menu.

Last night was the first time we've dined at The Savory Grain and we have no idea why it took us this long to find this splendid dining option. The happy hour runs from 4 to 7pm and the beers and house wine are extremely good. The children's drink menu is so cute. The ingredients used in all our entrees was unique, fresh and delicious. A restaurant experience is so much nicer when the moment you walk in it feels like you are truly welcome. The Savory Grain has this down pat. Our waitress could not have been more delightful and helpful. We won't wait long before returning!

On a whim, my friend and I made an impromptu trip to Richmond from Cville, and little did I know I would end up finding one of my fav restaurants in Virginia that would remind me of the modest yet gourmet places I love in my prior cities of residence in Chicago and Detroit. At around $50-60 total, we snagged two flights of local craft brews, a show-stopping appetizer, a refreshing yet filling salad and a ginormous/regionally based entrée to share among the two of us. This would not be possible at this price point in Charlottesville. Sunday Funday We took advantage of the fact that Happy Hour was still in session. (It's Tuesday through Sunday here.) I was floored when I saw the variety of local crafts on draft that I've never tried before. I went bananas for the Belgian sours and she opted for darker stouts and porters. My absolute fav was the Hardywood Blackberry Belgian White. (I am also a sucker for anything blackberry.) It had the right amount of tart and was not sugary sweet as most fruit-flavored beers are. My only issues with the drinks: The beer samples were presented in a cute manner via muffin tin, but none were labeled, and I'm positive that our server switched a couple while pointing out which was which because they tasted differently. There was also a sign that advertised $5 growlers, but that was totally misleading because that was just meant to represent the bottle, not the alcohol. For a second there, I thought I had actually found a cheaper craft beer growler than the deal I've gotten at Three Notch'd in Cville. (Go there for $12 bottle AND fill for the best beer in town.) Family-style Feast - for two My family and my in-laws each traditionally make large dinners on Sunday evenings, so this hearkened back to my Midwestern days with simple, yet hearty food. We had complimentary bread, the Empanadas for the appetizer, the Summer Salad and the Fried Chicken for an entrée. The bread was very unusual: berry and sun-dried tomato cornbread; herb and nut beer bread. I was surprised when the server put the plate on our table because I'm so used to boring, cold rolls. These were just a tease to... The empanadas: The best I've ever had. The dough was light and flaky like puff pastry. There was a ton of crabmeat and chorizo for the stuffing. And the spicy sauce just made it all come together. We each had one and ate them slowly because we didn't want the combo of flavors and textures to end. In fact, I was actually sad when I took the last bite. I couldn't be sad for too long as our salad was generous, even split up for the two of us. I'm a fan of creamy avocado, and with the combo of fresh sweet corn, bite of red onion and light cilantro dressing, it felt actually more Southwestern than just an average summer salad. Lastly, we managed to save room for our entrée: fried chicken stuffed with brie and mushroom with blueberry reduction sauce and two sides - sweet potato salad (subbed out traditional mashed potatoes) and green beans with goat cheese and Virginia ham. I wasn't completely in love with the chicken, as I would prefer a much crispier and thicker skin. The sauce may have also moistened the skin more so it would have been better on the side, and the brie almost seemed to rich and overwhelming with the chicken. I actually favored the sides even more than the main course, as normally straightforward string beans were richly flavored with the goat cheese and bits of ham. And the sweet potato salad had bits of bacon and other veggies mixed in without mayo, as I would expect with traditional potato salad. We really wished we had room and time for dessert. But we were stuffed, and the service took a bit longer than we had anticipated. We recognize the server was new, but the pacing was a bit too slow and we wished we had a little more attention. But I will definitely return because the menu is seasonal and I want to experience different dishes!

I went to Savory Grain during Richmond Burger week. I have had the place bookmarked since I got to Richmond and was pumped to try it out. The atmosphere was great and they had an awesome beer selection..........that's the extent of the good things I have to say. Both my girlfriend and I got the specialty burger. They were both super dry and the meat was rolled so tight into a ball that half of the bits consisted of nothing but bun and condiments (very disappointed). They were out of their Gougeres (Parmesan & Bacon pastry) which normally I wouldn't hold against a restaurant but it was 730 at night. And finally while the macaroni and cheese tasted great (very creamy), it was cold and it was a small serving at that. Overall I wasn't super impressed with the Savory Grain, but I will try them for brunch. I believe in second chances and anyplace that has Chicken and Waffles deserves one. Maybe they were having a bad night I don't know. I do know that The Betty on Davis killed it, there Burger week Burger was awesome!!!

We were back for Mothers Day and had fabulous meals again. I ordered their seafood and sausage entree. I'm hooked. The shrimp, clams, squid etc. along w/ the thinly sliced sausage made my day/evening. The seafood broth, made the meal. This entree, which featured a white sea broth was the key to this meal as w/ any other liquid based broth? No exception here. How good was it? I actually asked for the broth to bring home. Geez, did I just write that? I could have easily given 5 stars. The service was excellent and the restaurant was packed. We walked in at 6PM and the 4 of us were quickly seated. However, we got one of the last tables. I'm noticing certain restaurants are filling up by about 6 PM. Now for the rest of the entrees. My son-in-law had the meatloaf and that will be my next choice....it looked incredible, as did my wife's grilled chicken sandwich w/ what was described by my wife as a marmalade sauce ( she still is raving about how good it was ) and my daughter's salad was tasty and looked fab. We had to park about a block away....I'm concerned for the Broad St. parking down the road. The city actually needs more parking. That's just a sidebar!

DRINK REVIEW ONLY: ~I tried the Thai-gress cocktail (Plantation Spice Rum, Coconut Milk, Lemongrass Thai Chili Syrup, Lime) and LOVED it. Slight taste of the rum with coconut and lime was delish. Just a hint of sweetness. 5 STARS ~ Friend had THE STOIC (Luksosawa Potato Vodka, Strawberry, Sage, lemon). Delicious! A nice sweet, refreshing drink. Perfect if you like your drinks on the sweeter side. 4 STARS ~ My love had the GRTC (Virginia bourbon, Bold Rock Virginia cider, orange bitters). Definitely a good drink if you love the taste of bourbon. 4 STARS ~Friend got the MAI TAI (Appleton Extra 12 yr., Cruzan Aged White Rum, Cointreau, Pecan Orgeat, Lime) which was my least favorite. Tasted off-balance with flavors. 3 STARS I am sad I didn't have any room for food. I will definitely be back.

Finally made it to The Savory Grain, and I'm sad to say it was good but not great. The ambiance is nice, with dining al fresco for an added touch of charm. The server herself was fine, although the kitchen was a bit slow with the food to come out. And when it did, the temperature wasn't as hot as I'd have liked. I ordered the rockfish special ($24), which came with a garnish of fennel ("salad"), carrots and quinoa. The fish was cooked perfectly temperature-wise (doneness), but it lacked flavor, even with citrus (was it orange?) and raw jalapeno... both of which I thought were odd choices. I didn't eat the jalapeno, but I ate the citrus. Interesting. The apple crisp dessert was uneventful. They left the skin on the apple, and the texture of the apple was chewy instead of crispy. They also ran out of vanilla ice cream and gave us pumpkin instead. By the end of our dinner, they'd run out of rockfish, too and it was pretty early (8 p.m.). Makes me wonder how well the manager/chef stocks food if they're running out of stuff on a Saturday night. My martini was perfect, thankfully. I saw some salads come out, and they looked delicious -- an apple and a pear. So, if I came back, it'd probably be for light fare a la soup and salad (there's not much on the regular menu that looks appetizing). There are too many other restaurant choices to come back for pricey entrees that are just okay in flavor though. 3.5 stars rounded down for "just okay"-ness.

Can you say, "YUM!!"? This place took me by surprise. That little area down there is definitely starting to step up their food game with places like this one. My friend James and I went here for a dinner to catch up with each other and we were impressed. We started out with the sausage dip and moved on to the spaghetti squash and Venison meatloaf entrees. We were definitely not disappointed in any of the dishes. The dip was tasty and appropriately sized - we were able to get a nice snack before dinner and not be too full to eat the main course. This is definitely important for me. The dip itself tasted really good - it was hot and seasoned very well. I honestly could have that for breakfast daily! The Venison meatloaf was tender and cooked surrounded in bacon. It came with a side of greens and macaroni and cheese - definitely a southern inspired comfort meal. The greens had a good flavor, the pasta was al dente and cheesy, and the star of the meal (the Venison) was juicy, flavorful, and wonderfully cooked. The spaghetti squash dish was lovely - the spices were perfect and the vegetables that were sauteed in with the squash were cooked perfectly - not too hard, not too soft. The white wine that they used in the dish complimented the root vegetables absolutely enhanced the wonderful flavor. I'll absolutely go back again!

If I could put down 0 stars I would. This restaurant was extremely disappointing- the service was slow, the cornbread they gave us (since they were out of bread) was salty and dry, the mashed potatoes/cauliflower tasted so bad it couldn't be eaten. At one point I asked for a different salad dressing and the waitress brought back the same kind. Please save yourself the time and money and choose another restaurant.

The savory grain is awesome my girlfriend and I stopped in on a Friday night after a long week and wanted a few drinks and a good meal and we def got that. She got the spaghetti squash and oysters and I got the burger they both where amazing we will def be going back. The waitress was also really good she had 8 tables and you wouldnt even new it. The only thing that wasnt really food was the bread that you get when you seat down but that is minor.

We love savory grain! It's our go to restaurant as its close to our house. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is cool. They have live music some nights. The shrimp and grits are to die for. They usually have homestead ice cream too which is delicious. We highly recommend!

Yelp comes through once again. After taking a day trip from Charlottesville to Richmond, my friend and I stopped by here for dinner. While it wasn't the most perfect experience (slow service, waiting super long to take our order, got stuff after others who were seated after us, confusing signs at the bar) I'll definitely remember the food. You know when they go against the grain (couldn't resist) and serve their own cornbread with berries and sundried tomato and other beer bread with herbs and nuts (which were both different but excellent), that the place is unique. My friend and I split the following three things: The empanadas were on the suggestion of the waitress as we couldn't decide which app to get. Really thin, housemade pastry-like dough packed with crabmeat and chorizo with a lime cilantro chili aioli. I loved everything about it. The bread wasn't thick/heavy at all, the sauce added just a bit of kick and they didn't skimp out on the filling. The summertime salad was another light option that they were kind enough to divide onto two plates: corn, soft, ripe avocado, juicy cherry tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, feta and red onion and a bed of greens in a cilantro vinaigrette. Finally, the fried chicken entree stuffed with brie and a wild mushroom spread lightly fried and topped with a blueberry prosecco reduction. Not my favorite, although the blubbery sauce was pretty good. Just a little too much going on, and after having Southern fried chicken with its crispy skin, that's what I would've preferred. Two sides also came with it: potatoes (which we subbed for sweet potatoes without an up charge) and green beans with tiny bits of ham and goat cheese. If I could do it all over again, I would've gotten the crab crake or the risotto as the entree instead. Still, all very tasty, fresh and plenty full.

Thank you Savory Grain. Great, fresh, affordable food. I love the creative and fresh menu. Cute spot to eat with friends, colleagues, family, significant or insignificant others. Keep your hunger at bay with complimentary carbs - who doesn't love that?! I've been there several times with groups, and tried as many dishes as i politely could. Each one has been great. Fresh ingredients thoughtfully prepared. Large portions. even for brunch - read huge biscuits! i loved the pimento cheese appetizer and even cynical folks like their pimento cheese. I love that Savory Grain offers meals that even after you read the description, you aren't quite sure how the plate is going to come out of the kitchen. and when it finally arrives, i'm not disappointed but wonder how they do it. Call ahead if you can. Enjoy! Small patio outside, ample seating inside. i'ts larger than it looks. great bar thesavorygrain.com 2043 West Broad Street, Richmond, VA Phone: 804-592-4000

Greg: Our meal at TSG started out really well. I knew this was a slightly smaller place so I called and they put me down for a 2 person reservation/call ahead. It says they only do that for 5 or more online so that was a plus. TSGs atmosphere is interesting. It's a little bit loud from chatter which we didn't mind. In the very back they have one table in a little cove that looks like a dining room in someones house. The rest of the tables are in a row across from the bar or situated together in a second room. A little dim and what I would consider a great place to take a date. For an appetizer Matt and I shared the calamari. This was the most unique calamari I've had which I got excited about. However, upon arrival, I wasn't overwhelmed. "It was good but not great". The dish had 5 or 6 separate elements and that's exactly how they came across to me; separate. When I say light, I don't mean light like a salad is light, I mean light like when ice cream companies whip tons and tons of air into their ice cream: My meatloaf entree was very light or delicate. I expected the meatloaf to be packed with flavor but again "good, not great", a little on the sweet side. The mac and cheese on the side: divine. M-attack: TSG...where to start. As we sat down, the table was extremely wobbly which was a bit annoying, but our server took immediate notice and crawled under the table to stabilize it a little bit. As Greg mentioned, I shared his appetizer with him and it was my first time having calamari. It was pretty good, but I have nothing to compare it to. For my entree, I got their burger and added swiss cheese + fried jalepeno to it. It came with a side of fries which were a bit underwhelming as far as taste goes, and not very crispy as if they had been undercooked a bit. While the burger's was unprecedented, it was a bit too greasy for my taste. I wasn't too impressed with TSG, considering how many 4 and 5 star reviews they have, as the food was only moderately good. The price for a lot of these dishes is right though, and combined with their easy going atmosphere, I could see others having a good time at TSG.

The food and staff are pleasant. Solid wine list. Have dined their multiple times and will definitely go again. My only complaint is that they use too much dressing on their salads and food is sometimes inconsistent.

Visited Savory Grain a few days ago with my husband, Mom, and some family friends. It was Burger Week, so 4 of our 6-person party ordered the savory burger. I had the gazpacho and brussels sprouts salad, my husband ordered the scallops. We also arrived during happy hour, which was an unexpected treat. Considering the high price of some of the drinks here, we snagged quite a few dollars off of our bill. The dishes that I ordered were alright--not bad but not particularly memorable. The gazpacho, because it was a cucumber gazpacho, didn't have quite as much flavor as a typical tomato gazpacho. The brussels were only slightly cooked (I had been hoping that they were roasted or grilled) so the salad was basically served cold. Just not really what I was looking for, and the flavor was odd--tangy because of the vinaigrette but salty because of the bacon. My husband's scallops were well done and tasty, though the sides--quinoa and broccoli rabe--were very overcooked. I had a bite of one of my dining companion's burgers and thought that it was delicious...juicy, flavorful. So, my initial take-away is that they do meat (and most entrees) well. I'd be willing to give this place another shot with the caveat that I wouldn't go with the vegetarian options.

Savory Grain was a both a surprise and enjoyable dinning experience. First, the people were amazingly friendly and very attentive to us. I don't remember every looking for someone or asking for anything. It was such a great experience. The food...I had my best fish dish in Richmond here. I ordered the Rockfish and it was pure goodness. The fish was cooked perfectly and as if that wasn't enough they put a piece of pork belly underneath it! There was this sweet honey quinoa as the base of the dish that was great. Overall this was a perfect dish it had heat (jalapeños), savory and sweet all in a single bite. It took me probably 3 months to finally get to try this place and it will take me about two weeks to come back a second time. I highly recommend this place!

This food here is awesome. They make their own fresh bread to serve, which was unique and really good I had the brussels sprouts salad (with beets, heirlooms, bacon, and vinaigrette), which was amazing. Will definitely get again Also had the duck breast which was juicy, served with a delicious sauce and some grits and broccolini. Food comes out a little slow, but it was worth it. Drinks are pretty good too

FIRST Dinner at 7.30pm on Friday night (soft opening) I would prefer to give 3.5, but have to round down due to slowness of food delivery. We were excited to hear that there was a new restaurant to check out, and that we were able to get a table on fairly short notice. This restaurant is 2 doors down from The Republic, where The Empress used to be. Upon arrival, we were greeted and quickly showed out seat. The atmosphere was great, with a good buzz of people, exposed brick walls, and cozy seating. The restaurant is fairly small, but not tiny and we didn't feel cramped at our two top. After ordering and receiving drinks, it took a few minutes for our waitress to come back for our food order. We ordered all of our food at once - a soup, an appetizer, a salad, an entree, and a few extra sides. Major complaint #1 It took a long time for our food to come out (both rounds). We were twiddling our thumbs for most of our time there. We had the carrot carrot puree soup and the grilled portabella appetizer to start. The soup was amazing, way better than I was expecting. The grilled portabella was also tasty. At this point we though to ourselves "ok, worth the wait." After another long wait, our grilled romaine salad, Cavatappi pasta with shrimp, and sides of mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts came out. The salad was on par with the soup and portabella. I love grilled greens, and this did not disappoint. However, the pasta dish was way too creamy and cheesy for out taste. The shrimp also tasted a little overcooked. The mashed potatoes tasted great, but also were too creamy. After one or two spoonfuls, you had your fill. The brussels sprouts came out barely warm, were way overcooked, and had very little flavor - I definitely would stay away from them. The bar had a lot of beers on tap (no liqour license yet - forthcoming), and the atmosphere was lively but not crazy. It was a little loud, so they should try to fix that. Outside of the wait a few subpar dishes, we enjoyed ourselves. We likely will go back once it has had a chance to establish itself, and give it another try.

Food and drinks are delicious! But service has been seriously weak the 2 times I've been here. Both times were with reservation. The first time, we waited 30 minutes to be seated for a table for 6. The 2nd time, we waited 25 minutes for an appetizer that the server said she had "no idea why it was taking so long" and that when we ate it, suspiciously tasted like it'd been hanging out under the warmer :/ We also waited another 40 minutes for our entrees (all sandwiches). The server apologized and said a group of 16 had come in and kinda took them by surprise. Yea, all 4 of us at the table saw them come in and get all their entrees before us :/ The restaurant seems to be an attractive place for large groups to go yet I can't figure out why. A friend joined us right before we got our entrees and ordered a salad which she got pretty fast. That made 5 of us but it still irked me when the server presented our bills after dinner with 20% included gratuity. I usually see that with groups of 6 or larger. And REALLY, we wait an excessive amount of time for appetizer and entrees and you give us a bill with gratuity included? That was kinda my tipping point.

After catching Anthony Bourdain at the Landmark, the lady and I stopped here for drinks once we noticed Emilio's around the corner was on full blown salsa dancing mode in their establishment. Super clean, it obviously is new - and although we came just for drinks, the specials menu seemed really appetizing and fair on prices. I'd definitely be interested to check out their seafood fare (2 of which on the board, a tuna and a rockfish, both a weakness for me). My girlfriend had a sweet tooth and ordered the bread pudding, and although we both work in a restaurant in which we make home made desserts which MAY make us bias, she wasn't feeling it - at all. There was no pudding consistency to it what so ever. Watching her attack it with a spoon was nothing short of attacking firm texas toast. The dish was presented beautifully, but she wasn't a fan. Again, we (she) may be bias, but just telling it how we saw it. The bartenders were friendly and attentive, and allowed me to sample any draft from their somewhat arguably custom craft draft list. The only TV in the establishment was turned off, which somewhat forced me to listen to nearby patrons, but all that aside - I look forward to checking this place out for dinner in the near future. For now, a comfortable 2.5 - 3.

What a great meal, I really enjoyed the service and the ambiance. We had the the duck, and wild boar for dinner. Both were prepared perfectly and I left wanting more. The Mac and cheese was the only downside to the meal because it was dry. Overall great meal and if you live in Richmond or just passing through...check this place out.

My friend and I went to The Savory Grain last week, it was a fist time visit, primarily to see our friend play live music. I am glad we did, the beer selection was phenomenal and the menu unique (in a very good way). I had the Wild Boar, the seasoning was excellent and the sides were paired perfectly. Next time I will have the Roasted Rabbit pot pie...yum!

I am very excited that the Savory Grain is so good. There have been a few restaurants in and out of that space, and I'm happy to say I think the Savory Grain is here to stay. The beer list alone is a good reason to stop in. It's a full legal sized page. Lots of great options- almost anybody can try something new! Their menu ranges from classic American to some more interesting selections. The Chicken Sandwich (grilled) and the Savory Burger are sure fire picks. The price also ranges $9-$25 for entrees. They also have Gluten Free options which are awesome! I got the GF chicken breast and it was very very good. Both times I have been there the service has been slow- which is fine if you are looking to hang out and chat over a few beers. I do appreciate- both times I have been there the Chef has come out and asked how our meal was. I appreciate that level of caring/concern. It's a solid, reliable place if your looking for some interesting beers and good food. I know I will be going back!

So i've been to The Savory Grain a handful of times and I have to say, I am so pleased with their food and service. It's always nice to see the same staff at restaurants. When I worked in the industry, how the place is run is usually directly responsible for the amount of staff turnover. They must be doing something right! That freaking Savory Burger is amazing. I want it now, I want it later, I want it to be all mine. Burger Week almost ruined it for me but then I realized that burger week meant "overcooked burgers" from every establishment in Richmond Week. Just don't participate with them next year! I also had oysters on the half shell at my last visit and scallops over something delicious with a cold pasta salad and greens. It was so delicious! I'm spoiled by The Savory Grain's burger, wine, beer, and service. I can't wait to go back! Take care & savor it up!

Very good, well rounded food. Took a large group 10+ and they were very accomodating - ask (beg if needed!) to sit in the "living room". This is a little hard to explain, but once you see if you will get it. I cannot speak highly enough about the full experience. Easily able to split up checks (I realize that with POS systems these days this is not really a big deal, but as a person who frequently dines with large groups not having to deal with a major meltdown over splitting of the checks will always be a part of my reviews for a restaurant) My bacon wrapped meatloaf was lovely, the meat lollipos (app special for the night) are really where I was finding myself savoring every bite. Could have skipped the butter beans what came with the meatloaf - mac and cheese & the mashed potatoes were very yummy. Friends tried dishes all over the menu - I was told the burger was nice and the sauce (smoked tomato mayo) was particularly a good accent. Loads of beer options, decent win list for a cocktail and beer heavy focus. Give it a try!

What a treat! Our party of three arrived on Friday evening and were promptly seated in a small side room near the front of the establishment. When we asked we were quickly moved to the main dining area due to the high noise level - much better. (Next time, weather permitting, we'd likely chose to be seated outside.) As it was before 7pm we all took advantage of the Happy Hour drink special; local drafts and on-tap wines for $4.00. The local wines were surprisingly good, as was the craft beer (a no brainer considering all the great new local breweries). The fresh breads, baked on-site, were very tasty. For starters we shared two; fresh calamari and Jalapeño poppers. The calamari was quite unusual, topped with a fried egg. The combination of the egg and the tomato-based sauce was delightful. Perfectly fried and virtually greaseless - we would return just for that. The poppers had a very tasty cheese filling that we all enjoyed. The many appealing items on the menu (plus two chalkboard specials) made it difficult to choose our main course. Two of us opted for the Summer Vegetable an Wild Mushroom Risotto. Absolute heaven in a delightful mix of very fresh veggies. The simple toast points could have been enhanced a bit to make this dish even more special. One in our party selected the shrimp and grits. It was all but ordinary. The addition of bacon and tomato bits added a nice extra layer of flavor. The grits were a bit soupy, but that's a matter of personal preference and didn't detract from her enjoyment. Service provided by Stephanie was exceptionally good. We never felt rushed and she checked back often enough that we never felt neglected. She also helped us make our difficult main course selections. Their menu focuses on fresh, local ingredients and they certainly have hit the mark perfectly: menu selections, food quality and presentation were all spot on! All three of us look forward to returning again very soon.

In a complete departure from my M.O. (no, not Missouri, Grandpa Simpson), The Savory Grain should be innocent until proven guilty. They absolutely deserve 5 stars out of the starting gate. For full disclosure here, I must state that my trips have only centered-around more of a happy hour experience. However, we did order quite a few appetizers, so I think I can accurately deduce how their overall dining experience must be. A wonderfully brief and crisply-written set of menus will meet you at your table; pay attention to the cocktail list, as it conveys a good thought process and an eye for flavor profiles. The menu itself seemingly changes with the availability of ingredients and the kitchen's inspiration du jour. Each service staff member encountered has been fun, attentive and knowledgeable, making the experience quite nice. Overall, I see myself heading there more often than not.

Busy for a regular Thursday night when we went but got a table right away (the only one left). Craft beers on tap, good menu. The bf got a rabbit pot pie (rabbit!) and I got a turkey sandwich. Crab dip to start was very good. Happy to see Al, a favorite Richmond bartender, will be joining the crew as we talked to him a bit while we were there. Looking forward to coming back with friends. Great atmosphere.

Has it all. Great space, robust bar scene, diverse menu. I had wild boar & it crushed it. Burger great too. Beer list really strong. Quality spot. Great addition to a tough street. Keep up the great work!

Had brunch with 7 other ladies at the quaint spot. This is a busy restaurant with opens at 4 p.m during the week, but opens at 11 on Sundays. It's a nice restaurant with a pleasing decor and good vibe. We made a reservation which was great so we didn't have to wait. I viewed the restaurant on line to give me a heads up about what I wanted to eat. I saw sweet potato pancakes with a pecan saue. Sounds yummy, right? So, we sat down and our server pour us some water. We had to return some of the glasses because they were dirty. One glass is okay, but 3? So, as I viewed the menu looking for the sweet potato pancakes and come to found out they were seasonal. They need to update their website. However, I chose the french toast which was delicious and prepared perfectly, along with sausages and scrambled eggs on the side. The menu has a good selection for brunch and a good specialty menu for drinks. The kitchen was a tad bit slow, but at least our food was hot and all the dishes came out together. There was a band playing jazz up front and it was very soothing. Everyone enjoyed their good and we had a good time. The server was nice and when it was time for the bill, she already had it separated so we didn't have to wait. I will definitely be back, and maybe try the dinner menu.

The Savory Grain, easily and without a doubt, makes it to the near top of my list on favorite places to dine in Richmond, VA. 4.5 stars. The meatloaf entree was delicious. The sauce on top seemed to be made of cranberry or some kind of sweet fruit that complemented it perfectly. It was served with a loaded baked potato and green bean side (I believe it was seasoned with garlic? Nonetheless, delicious and cooked to the right amount of snap). My bf and I ordered an additional 3 sides, for $10 more. Not a bad deal, considering how well-prepared they were. Sides were something to rave about (who knew veggies could taste so good?!), and perfectly seasoned. One of our sides was more green beans (yes they were that good!). The grits made with gouda were the perfect comfort food, and the brocollini made with almonds was amazing. I loved the fall flavors that came out beautifully in all the dishes. My bf had the savory burger, cooked to a medium. Even the burger was better-than-your-average. The hand-cut fries were a great addition. Overall, we enjoyed and definitely savored our meal at the Savory Grain. Even had enough to box for later! A sure hit if you are looking to dine somewhere with great service and atmosphere, (and even greater food)!

I had heard this place was good from a friend, but was beyond impressed with everything from the décor, to the drinks, and of course the food! We got the pumpkin gouda app, which was so different from anything I have ever tried and delicious! My husband got the pork sandwich and I got the stuffed chicken - which were both great! We both sampled a couple different drinks which were also very unique and quite tasty! I will definitely come back here on another trip to Richmond!

Sunday brunch had some tempting choices. Carrot cake pancakes with a cream cheese drizzle and crispy side of bacon, was sweet and a little desserty. The garbage pile doesn't sound appetizing but it's smothered potatoes, egg, bacon, cheese, and a spice stuffed jalapeño Even a tasty hamburger can be breakfast with a egg on top. Little surprising that they didn't have regular mustard, only honey mustard. They have a big selection of tempting cocktails and beers on tap, and bottles of wine. Best part of the meal was the awesome jazz music.

Unexpected gift of great ambiance mixed with incredible food, an equally exciting drink menu, and great interior decorating to satisfy the designer in me. I had quail and was very pleased with my decision as it was cooked to perfection where it was still tender, but the outside was a beautiful brown color. My only knock could be that while the food is fabulous and engulfs you from start to finish, it does this thing where you want more but don't want to pay for more because of how relatively pricey it is. Unfortunately, that means that I left hungry and ultimately disappointed. Somewhat loud, but the background noise encouraged conversation similar to Coffitivity inspiring productivity.

Love the food, drinks and staff here. Always friendly and welcoming, smiles on the hostess and bartenders faces. Happy hour drinks you can't go wrong with: the house red is always a decent cab, sparkling a cava or prosecco. The draft selection is extensive and even at off hours prices are fair. BBQ and bourbon Tuesday's are what draws me in. Plates are always a good size, flavors are big. Their flatbreads are always a solid choice for an app as is their pimiento cheese with toast points.

I came here with friends on a Saturday night. The happy hour deals were fantastic! I got a glass of wine for $4. I ordered the stuffed chicken which cost about $18. I'm sure I could have gone to a chain restaurant and gotten something similar for about $13-$15 but I would rather support a local business with fresh food from local farms and bakeries. The stuffed chicken had okra on the side, which I loved, and it was stuffed with sausage and apples. Mashed potatoes were also included. Overall, it was delicious. I just wished my chicken had a little more flavor. I would definitely return! As a native Richmonder, now residing in northern Virginia, I have been highly impressed with the emergence of so many great places to dine in Richmond. This restaurant has definitely been added to my list of favorite restaurants in Richmond!

I went for the first time as part of a 12 person group. Not only were all the dishes excellent & enjoyed by everyone, but our server, Stephanie, was unbelievable. She handled our group as well as other tables without missing a beat, was never intrusive but was able to anticipate all of our needs. She even remembered what one of our group's children are when he and his family ate there a year ago. The beer & drink selection was very good and local products, both food & drink, were highlighted throughout the menu. I highly recommend the Savory Grain & will be back.

This is the good part of my review: the drinks are well made, creative, and strong, the beer menu is solid (especially for a craft beer haven like Richmond), and the wine list is sufficient for anyone's taste. Here is the bad part of my review: I'm quite surprised this place has such good ratings on the food. We were a group of four for dinner and ordered many different things from the menu; sharing most of the plates with each other. I have to say, everything *sounds* good on the menu. As far as taste goes, however, we were consistently disappointed that the majority of the dishes had absolutely no flavor. We ordered the gazpacho, clam chowder, shrimp and crab dip, Cherrystone clams, and pimento cheese for shared appetizers. Nothing stood out. The Cherrystone clams had a noxious seafood flavor that overpowered the rest of the ingredients. The pimento cheese was a strange take on such a traditionally Southern dish. It tasted more like mushy feta cheese with a couple of pimento peppers in them. For entrees, we ordered the Spaghetti Squash, Fried Chicken, Red Snapper, and the Shrimp and Grits. My fried chicken was probably the worst fried chicken I've ever had as it had no flavor other than the blueberry prosecco reduction. The skin, while supposed to be crispy, had the flavor and consistency of a saltine. My friend, a vegeterian, ordered the Spaghetti Squash and that was the best dish of the night. It actually had flavor and was seasoned well and I wish I had ordered it. This restaurant needs to step up its flavor game. For a city becoming more renowned for Southern comfort food, this place falls incredibly short.

I love this place! The service is a bit slow but most of the staff seems friendly and knowledgeable. The food is fresh and seasoned well with a Richmond attitude and an outdoor patio. The menu is succinct with traditional and contemporary dishes. They have equally delicious cocktails- I was looking forward to their strawberry cava spritzer and perfectly poached eggs. My last visit to the restaurant for brunch was disappointing. It was really awkward to walk into a restaurant without a host area or host- or anyone to acknowledge our presence for a few minutes. We were finally greeted and hastily seated; I feel the hostess was spread thin. We waited about 10 minutes- no one. It was clear our hostess did not want to help us as she made several trips to clear the other tables without help. We cut our visit short. On our way out to the car we heard a waitress chatting about the menu and suggesting her favorite dishes to another family of 4. They were seated and served immediately after my party had been waiting. One last note: please don't point at your patrons...or at least do it when they're not looking at you. While getting into the car, we were blatantly pointed by the waitress and hostess in front of all all the diners. It was embarrassing; by now the other guests were clearly aware of the situation. Yikes. This is a cool Richmond spot. They are also dog friendly on the patio. Our last waitress gave our pups wanter and ice cubes- thanks! I hope my last visit was an anomaly. Well executed food, relaxing atmosphere and overall great place to stop by in Richmond.

The meal: I had the Shrimp and Grits as my meal. The grits had their gritty texture as expected and there was a decent amount of shrimp accompanied in the dish. The dish has a very creamy thick consistency too it -making it very very fillingl. But its one of those dishes that is so good and you know you're full and could burst open, but you keep eating more. I enjoyed my dish! and as always, I requested no bacon and they were happy to honor my request. They serve a cornbread-ish muffin to each table (which on previous occasions I have tried and it was good)-I did not try it on this occasion bc I knew I needed to save room for the shrimp and grits entree, since I know it would be so filling. My friend had the crab cakes and they were decent size and tasted great as well (you know I had to try them) lol The place: they have a nice seating area outside that would be great on a nice cool day. The seating inside is quaint and not big at all. At times, I felt a little uncomfortable talking to my friend about certain things because the people on both sides of us were so close and could definitely ease drop on our good gossip-so that is a downer on much needed catch up time that needs to stay "confidential" lol. The staff was friendly and attentive. Overall: I think the food was great and I would return over and over again to try many things on their menu. Its a great Richmond gem that everyone should try!

Great food, good service, attentive staff, friendly atmosphere. For large parties (we had 12) beware, your food may come very slowly at peak hours Crab cakes: 5 stars Crab dip: 5 stars Scallops: 4 stars - cooked perfectly but considering the uniqueness of flavor combos on all other dishes they could afford to impress me a bit more Pork chop: 5 stars Shrimp & grits: 4 stars (primarily because I've got Charleston, SC to compare it with) Desserts(varying): meh 3 stars....they aim for creative but they are just good (tried: pear apple cobbler - more tart than cobbler; brownie - moist and crunchy (could get 4.5 stars); and strawberry bread pudding - If you just want strawberry bp, do it, but Tarrant's (nearby @ broad & 1st has #1 bp and brio Tuscan @stony point has great choc chip that both surpass this bp) Friends who drank recommend the Broad street (cocktail) and the dark lagers. I'll totally go back.

Nice selection of beers on tap. Started off with the crab dip app, pretty good. Sara ordered the Turkey Dip and I ordered the rabbit pot pie. The pot pie was good, pulled out a bay leaf and a bone from my mouth but other than that, pretty tastey! There was a jazz band playing on the night we went, good tunes.

Have been here a few times for dinner (the shrimp and grits=AMAZING), but this time we tried brunch. Perhaps our new favorite spot! It wasn't too crowded, which was refreshing as sometimes battling Sunday brunch crowds can be tough to avoid. They had a jazz band playing, which was really relaxing. Our server was on point the entire time, and everything was coursed perfectly. I started off with the hibiscus mojito (definitely recommend) and my boyfriend had the Bloody Mary which he said was delicious. Our food came and it did not disappoint! The bacon was life changing. I am totally ordering solely a plate of bacon next time, and you think I'm joking. The sweet potato pancakes were a creative spin on the classic, but very filling I must say. My boyfriend got the sausage gravy entree, which was also very tasty. All in all, 5 stars because the food is amazing, the service is top notch, and the cocktails are nice and strong just how I like them. :)

Amazing!!! My sister and I thoroughly enjoyed the service, food, and live music offered here. Our waitress, Tara, was incredibly nice and attentive. The food was fresh, delicious, and very reasonably priced. The band played some great tunes that we enjoyed listening to while we ate. I highly recommend the crab soup, calamari salad, and veggie sandwich( for anyone eating vegetarian). Though, I really think you can't go wrong with anything on their menu. I definitely will return when I am in the area again.

This restaurant is mediocre. Service was great-- both our server and the hostess were flawless. Bread was served cold--- not room temperature, cold. Duck breast special was advertised as having a "glaze" but was heavily sauced. Completely drowned any flavor of the meat. Beef stew tasted like all of the ingredients were made separately and then thrown together at the last minute. Beef was tough, potatoes were a little too firm, and there was an odd "fresh" herb flavor that didn't taste right with a savory beef stew. Oh well.

Went here Saturday night for my birthday dinner with friends. I reserved the table and it was ready before we even walked in. Our waitress was awesome and even split the checks without asking [always a plus!] They had prosecco on tap and I'm a huge prosecco fan. The appetizers were insanely good. We got the beer cheese dip with sausage and bacon wrapped jalepenos. Everyone at the table went on and on about how delicious their dinners were and I absolutely agree. They also brought out dessert with a candle in it. Really sweet :) This is my third or fourth time here and I've never been disappointed. I think this is one of my top 5 favorite restaurants in the city. You just can't beat the amazing staff, drink menu, and local dinner items. If you're teetering between this place and another restaurant, let me save you the trouble...GO HERE!

Went for Sunday brunch with a family party of twelve. First of all, the place is very nice and cozy. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We tried an assortment of the menu items and specials and there was a consensus among the twelve of us that the food ranged from average to excellent. Everyone left happy and we will probably return.

My parents and I found The Savory Grain through yelp and, as good Yelp karma, I feel it is my duty to the yelpers or the Richmond area to alert them to just how good The Savory Grain is. I have been here twice, and on both occasions I was equally as pleased. The food here is not only creative, but the interesting combinations of food actually work so well. The atmosphere is cozy and warm- the servers know the menu well, the lighting is low and the seating is comfortable, and the deco leaves nothing to be desired in terms of a homey-yet-classy environment. The pumpkin gruyere dip I tried upon my last visit was sinfully good-you'll find that's the case for most of the apps. Go to the savory grain!! you won't regret it.

Just ate here last night. We were greeted immediately and chose to sit outside. Everything on the menu was delicious sounding. We chose the jalapeño poppers and they were great. Wrapped in crispy bacon they were cheesy and tasty. For our meals I got the red snapper and the bf had the burger. Funny thing, the snapper was the blandest thing on the plate. While I did like the dish, I thought the combination of items on my plate was odd: red snapper with a citrus topping on top of pork belly with a veggie medley and crab orzo. All of the items had conflicting flavors. The orzo is my favorite: it was a perfect combination of flavors and I ate that first. The veggie medley was my next favorite. The pork belly was a little tough but tasted good. The snapper was pretty bland. I couldn't understand it. It was a beautiful piece of fish, but was as bland as anything. I'm still giving this place four stars because my boyfriends burger was fantastic, drinks were great and service was great too. Nice musician inside playing songs on an acoustic guitar. I will definitely be back but I'll try something different.

Went on a weekday night- no reservation. Only had to wait for 40 minutes. We weren't starving, so we waited. We were seated right on time. The bar was packed and made standing room hard to come by, but the staff was friendly and didn't seem to mind us being in their way. Food was excellent. Love places with raw oysters! I was disappointed when the menu special I had been eying all night was erased just as we sat down... oh well, opted for the steak. yum! Leftovers reheated well too. Would return. Parking is a bit tricky, but we found a spot on the street.

Savory Grain in my favorite NEW restaurant in Richmond! I think we've been there 4 times since they opened last month and are really enjoying working our way through the menu. A standout is the calamari. It's prepared like no one else's.... It sound a bit odd but all the parts really work together... A wonderful tomato sauce with chorizo on the bottom, perfectly light and crispy fried calamari, topped with a fried egg and grilled jalapeno slices!! We've had salads, sandwiches and almost all of the appetizers, Don't leave with out house made ice cream! I had the mixed berry that was topped with a variety of fresh berries. We initially came for the 24 tap beer selection but come back for the food!

Great food, worst service I've ever had.We went to savory grain last night for a friend's birthday. We were a party of 7 and sat in that little "godfather table" at the far end. We had an area to ourselves and were kind of separated from other diners which we really liked. The experience was soured however by our terrible service. The food was wonderful. I can't speak for our whole table but my husband I ordered 2 apps, the deltaville oysters and the pumpkin Gruyere dip. The oysters were fine and the dip was great, very creamy and had a nice crusty bread bowl with it. My husband had the ribeye steak and I had the pork loin sandwich. The ribeye was wonderfully cooked to order and seasoned well. The pork loin sandwich was LITERALLY THE BEST SANDWICH I've ever had. Nice juicy pork topped with crispy bacon on a toasted soft bun. Came with perfectly golden onion rings. Definitely a must orders if you find yourself there! We got specialty cocktails too but frankly they weren't anything to shout about although not bad. Now, the reason for my mediocre review. THE SERVICE WAS TERRIBLE. We had a larger party and we were seated in the special area, and made it clear it was for a birthday. Not that we expected any special treatment, but it wasn't super busy for a Friday so we figured it should at least be average. From the beginning our waitress seemed completely incompetent. We were seated and she proceeded to wander off for 20 mins without even taking drink orders. One of our party had to go find her and tell her we were ready to order, to which she said, "I'll be there in a minute". Like i said, we weren't the only ones there but it wasn't super busy. Then, she asked everyone what they wanted once, immediately forgot, and asked us all again. She had even written it down the first time! After she took our order she then took another 10 mins to bring out bread. We got our drinks and the ice was already melting so they were probably sitting for a bit. At this point we had already been at the restaurant for the length of time for a standard meal but hadn't even gotten our food yet. We noticed that a second server started popping in to refill water, bring drinks, more bread etc because ours was so awful, probably. Food comes out and we all miraculously got the right thing and as I already said no complaints there. Waitress brings out the check and put all the wrong food on it. We get it corrected but then as we are about to pay (at last, 2 hours after being seated!) she comes over and comments she accidentally left some items off the first one. So we have to wait for her to fix it a second time. It was quite a debacle. Would have been 5 stars if not for one star service.

Went here last night for a friend's birthday dinner. We were a group of 10 and the restaurant set up our table in their back "party space" which was great for privacy. The Savory Grain has a great beer menu and since they classify themselves as a "draft house", you'll find some not-too-commonly-found beers on their menu. We tried their sauteed calamari as a starter (served with a nice smoky/spicy tomato sauce) and ordered the meatloaf and quarter grilled chicken as entrees (perfectly cooked with tons of flavor). The mashed potatoes rock, too! Service was really good and even though our party was large, the servers were attentive with drinks and requests. Great to see that Broad Street is growing with an exciting restaurant scene! Will return here to check out their outdoor patio area.

What's to love: The place is pretty new and an awesome addition to a part of Richmond that needs flavor. It has a lovely outdoor eating area my friends and I would have taken advantage of had it been a bit cooler. The inside is quite rustic and there's a big dining area that can be enclosed by a curtain for large parties. The food was great. I ordered the pan seared duck with grilled zucchini and mashed potatoes (pictured). I love that they let me sub the sides to get the zucchini. The duck was flavorful and came with 2 different sauces. What could be better: Street parking - wasn't too hard to find a spot, but some people hate to parallel. The bread they gave us was a mix of a special cornbread and a thicker type of bread. I found both to be dry. The mashed potatoes were nothing exciting. As much as I loved the duck, I wish it was seared more to get some crispiness, but maybe that would have dried out the duck? Also, our waitress made us feel like she was disappointed that we didn't order additional drinks and food. My friend and I had planned to order dessert, but we got pretty full from the entree. It was like she was disappointed she wasn't gonna get a bigger tip or something. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side and my group was seated by the door. It got busier throughout the night that people were standing close to the entrance/bar area that it almost felt like they were on top of us, but I guess that's a sign of a successful place. Overall, pretty impressed with the place and think it has a promising future in Richmond.

    (4)
  • Jacob K.

Round two was... less uplifting. A significant change in the menu has wiped out a lot of the more promising dishes, so I fell back onto the daily specials. Unfortunately, my orzo was so over-cooked as to be inedible, and my asparagus had been steamed, grilled, and then reheated in a microwave. I understand that some corners are fine to cut, but the overall experience was just a little bit tawdry. One of my fellow diners got the shrimp-and-grits, only to discover that it might more aptly be described as old-bay-and-grits. On the other hand, my fiance stuck with their sandwiches and had a superb meal over all. So, sharply mixed results for three stars, Trebek.

From what I've heard and the presentation of the store I expected a little more. It could have been what I got but the piece of beef I ordered just wasn't good. Willing to give it another shot but I was not impressed.

Came here for brunch with the fam on a beautiful Sunday. The outdoor space is nice, even though you're basically overlooking Broad and don't get any direct sunlight so it can be chilly in the shade. The Benny (eggs benedict) and veggie panini/breakfast sandwich were much tastier than the omelettes, which were a bit dry. None of it was out of this world, but nothing was terrible. I'd recommend for an easy, reliable brunch, especially if you want to dine outdoors.

I wanted to love this love the Savory Grain but I just like it so far. The space is open and nice and has a nice patio. We came on a Friday and it looks like it is hard to get a seat inside without reservations. Still a few seats outside. The steak I had was not the medium rare I wanted (over cooked) and just didn't have a lot of flavor. The mashed potatoes were my favorite part of the dish. BF's pork chop was better and had pretty good flavor along with the mac and cheese. For the price the portions were good but I wish the flavor was a bit better. We had jalapenos wrapped in bacon which was good. Service was great. Good spot and service. Given the great reviews, I wish the food was a little better. More of a 3.5.

We called early afternoon for reservations and were told only parties of five or more could make reservations, but if we got there by seven we would be seated with a short wait. At 9:30 our dinner finally came to the table. Both the fish dinners were dry and basically not worth eating. The place was so loud that for the 2 1/2 hour wait we couldn't really make conversation. We went there to celebrate a big occasion in our family and left upset and disappointed. I will say, the manager did do the correct thing by picking up the bill but we can't get back the occasion.

This place dare I say is one of the best places in Richmond. Whenever I walked by, they always seemed to be super busy. And after finally making a trip out, I understand why. The food is delicious, and the food is affordable. So on to the review of the food overall. For appetizers, my group got the calamari and pork belly. I have never really tasted calamari like it before. The calamari itself is not as wholesome as you would expect if you got it from a fish shack, in other words it's as meaty as you would expect in Richmond, but the seasoning for the batter was spot on. I was a little disappointed that it was a tad bit over fried, but the tomato sauce that went along with it was great. Interesting though that they put a fried egg on top, which ain't bad. The sauce for the pork belly was great, but like the calamari, it was a tad bit overcooked also. The dressing for the "salad" on the side of the pork belly dish was great. Too bad they don't rinse the lettuce that was "triple washed". Still has that gritty taste. For entrees, let's just say that they make sauces well. The duck was tender. Mashed potatoes were great. Pork chops were awesome. And the boar... well I have never had boar. But if it's what the Indians ate, I would say that ate well. Vegetables were obviously fresh and not overcooked. Nice and crispy. It's also evident that they make their own mashed potatoes. Now I've had mac'n'cheese, but they make it in a way that I wouldn't be able to at home. Only thing is that I wish I had tried their meatloaf, but I can't complain. Oh, and did I mention that the chef's bring your food out? Not sure if it's a sous chef, line chef, or head chef, but it's a chef nonetheless. And it's another demonstration of the service at this place. Staff is super friendly. Also, the beer selection is awesome. Bunch of local taps. It's a shame that they sell pretty quickly. I noticed how they use stemless wine glasses, which I am not sure how I feel about it, since it takes away from "wine etiquette". But can't complain with the new trends. All in all, would I recommend this place, heck yeah! This gets close to my favorite restaurant in Richmond, Acacia, but at great prices.

Went here with my husband and my dad for my birthday. My dad usually sticks to chain restaurants and orders chicken parm everywhere... he may be giving that up after our experience here because it was divine!! He loved it, we all did!! We had the pierogi appetizer, and that's probably the only negative part. They were good but needed a little more taste. To be honest, they could have been horrible and it wouldn't have mattered because the rest of the meal was one if the best I have had in RVA. I had the scallops and they were probably some if the best I've ever eaten. My dad had told the woman who sat us (pretty sure sge was the manager) that it was my birthday and when my entree came out it had a flower on it. I loved that little extra detail. The pecan pie for dessert was out of this world and all desserts are served with ice cream which I feel like they make themselves. It was SO good!!! Def one of my new cab spots and will tell everyone to go!!

Since this restaurant is right around the corner from our new house we really wanted to like it, but, alas, it was not to be. We ordered oysters for starters, which should be a slam dunk for Richmond in January, but after a 10-minute wait, were told they were out. They could get some in about 20 minutes "from home"...right. Then my wife's flounder arrived undercooked. Actually undercooked is being generous, this was completely raw beneath the breading. We sent it back and, as I fought a losing battle against my own meal getting cold, waited another 20 minutes while a parade of dishes went past to other customers. Eventually the dish arrived and were told (full disclosure) that we would be comped for the fish. Don't get me wrong, we all behaved ourselves and there were no scenes, but it was just a bummer. Maybe it was some kind of post-holiday slump but, with all the options in this part of town, we won't be finding out.

This was our second time dining at Savory Grain and we loved it. My husband ordered the Savory Grain Burger and I ordered the Spaghetti Squash Entree. We also split 3 of the sides. Love how you can bundle side dishes so our 3 sides were only an additional $10. Much to our surprise we got there early enough for the Happy Hour specials so my husband ordered a draft recommended by the server and enjoyed it. I can't remember the name but I like how knowledgeable the server was about the beer menu. We will definitely be back.

First impression: nice interiors and small but decent patio. We made reservations, as was suggested, but the place didn't really start picking up until about 8pm. We decided to sit outside, despite the traffic noise, because the weather was so perfect. Good beer list and the Bourbon Street Punch was delish. We started out with the portobello mushrooms topped with balsamic, tomato and artichoke, as well as, the pork belly. Both were fantastic and big enough to share. For the main course my companion ordered the lamb special and she loved it. I asked our server about either the chicken or quail, she advised the quail (by a small margin) and she was right. The butter beans were perfect but I didn't care for the squash casserole...though I didn't hate it. Even though we were both stuffed we always ask what is available for dessert and our server said the magic words. Key Lime Pie. No better way to end a meal. Overall I'll definitely be back.

Second time here for dinner. Staff is friendly. .. we were looking at wines and they were out of the knee we wanted and the bartender came over to our table and suggested another. We had the homemade pimento cheese appetizer -- fabulous! My dad and I had the pork shanks and my mom had the beet salad. Everything I've had here is delicious and I can't wait to sit outside and enjoy their happy hour!

Had the special: lamb chops with cheesy grits and asparagus wrapped in bacon. Excellent! Good service and I would have ordered almost anything off of the menu. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant.

Delicious drinks? Check. Mouthwatering bites? Check. Stellar service? Check. Yep, all the makings of a 5-star spot in my book. I was expecting to enjoy Savory Grain prior to my visit, but what I wasn't expecting was the level of awesomeness that I encountered in all aspects of my experience. We arrived a little earlier than our reservation time so we sat at the bar and sipped a few drinks before sitting down for our meal. I was craving a complex cocktail, so when I noticed the margarita of the day - blood orange cilantro marg with jalapeño thyme infused tequila - I was sold. Wow, was this a perfect choice! The combination of sweet and spicy was refreshing and each sip was different than the last. I sucked it down pretty darn quick, and had to restrain myself from ordering a second. If this is on the menu during my next visit, I'm absolutely ordering it again. The bartender was also engaging, so I can imagine this being a fun spot to visit just for drinks at the bar. Once we were seated at a table, or positive experience only continued. I was super impressed with our server and the efficiency with which all of the staff seemed to be managing the large Saturday evening crowd. Despite this being a relatively new-ish spot, it's certainly running like a well-oiled machine. Everything that came out of the kitchen looked and tasted delicious. I devoured the grilled portabella mushroom app and the roasted brussels sprouts (both of which were much larger portions than expected, so I even had a few leftovers for the next day). The bf loved his roasted quail and my dad was a huge fan of his burger with a side of bacon gorgonzola mashers. Everything from the ambiance to the meal was just fantastic. I've been raving about this spot to friends and cannot wait for my return visit.

Food is always interesting and well prepared. The kale salad is amazing. I've eaten here many times and have always had a good meal and good service. Beer selection is also very good with a nice set of rotating taps. Staff is friendly and professional. Sunday jazz brunch can be packed, but it's worth the wait and is always fun. Finally, they possibly have the best bloody mary in town. No zing zang, which can be found at most bars in RVA. Theirs is homemade. Ask for a pickled pepper to go with it. Fantastic.

A great dinner! We arrived late on a Wedn esday and were greeted with smiles and attentive service at the bar. We ate at the bar (which is beautiful and comfortable). Appetizers of clams, smoked Gouda dip, and the smoked bacon and date salad were generously portioned and delicious. The prices are more than fair and many times seemed too low for the quality and quantity of the dishes Dinner of quail and pork were both perfect. Great selection of beer and wine. Really excited to have this spot downtown and look forward to many more dinners to come! Delicious, locally owned spot that is a welcome addition to the dining scene! Congrats to everyone involved, and those of you reading this... Go Eat!!

What a great place. We decided to check it out on a warm Wednesday night in March, and sat outside. We weren't starving, and the appetizers looked so good we decided to just do an appetizer combo for dinner. I had Venison Trail Chili, which was absolutely excellent, not too gamey, perfectly flavored and just the right consistency. My wife had the curry carrot ginger soup, which was also delicious. For the next course, I had oysters on the half shell, and Kathryn had the Perogies. Oysters were fresh and delightful, and the perogies were out of this world. The waitress recommended them with hot sauce, which we tried, absolutely a spectacular taste combination. For the final course, Kathryn tried a special, eggplant bruschetta, and I tried the grilled jalapeno poppers with bacon wrap. The eggplant bruschetta was incredible. I've never had eggplant prepared this way before, it was sweet and the bread came with goat cheese and balsamic along with apple, and the combination was just outstanding. The apple and goat cheese brought out a unique citrusy flavor in the eggplant, it was unlike anything I've ever had before. The bacon wrapped jalapenos were excellent, although I would have liked the jalapenos to be a little bit more cooked down, though I suppose that would have made them a lot harder to eat. All in all, just absolutely excellent. Service was great, and for a great meal very very reasonably priced. Will definitely be returning.

We went with a large group to The Savory Grain. We had never been before. The place was bustling! They had a great beer selection and a fairly priced wine menu. We had fried green tomatoes, and the pimento cheese appetizer both of which were outstanding. I never expected to order fried chicken but it was exceptional. Everyone in our group was impressed. The service was also excellent. We will definitely go back.

We just ate here for the first time and this is clearly in the running for favorite eat spot in Richmond. Our party of 6 got a little of pretty much everything on the menu and couldn't have been happier with the quality of food or service. Considering the busy saturday night crowd, we are definately not the only ones in love with this place.

Really, really love this place! Awesome draft beer selection and kick ass food. Their specials change seasonally and are always good. They have big portions for a fair price. Cool place with a great location. No need to search for parking, you can park at Pleasants Hardware across the street.

This place is so great! I've been twice so far and tried the kale salad, the rock fish, zucchini fries, and prawns with pear salsa. I also tasted the NY strip and the catfish. Everything was amazing. The kale salad is definitely going to be a staple for me. The staff is super nice and welcoming. They have a robust drink menu too. Everything is reasonably priced. the NY strip would have definitely been closer to $30 anywhere else, but it was $19 here. Also, the bring the bread out with honey butter....

I am so sad to say that I did not have a good eating experience at the Savory Grain. The service was beyond great and our server was as friendly as they come. Not hugely knowledgable on the wine list and not really any recommendations but she was super nice. We started the meal with a HOT crab dip. I emphasize the HOT bc it was anything but. It had a cheese sprinkle on the top and it was not melted one bit. The flavors were great but the fact that it was not even lukewarm was a total turn off. I ordered shrimp and grits my co workers ordered meatloaf and the other a salad. None of us were pleased with our meals. My shrimp and grits were again cold. Wth?!?!? I wanted a hot meal. I also ordered broccoli on the side which was also cold. My friend could only take one bite of her meatloaf bc it was horrible. Her backed potato was so cold the butter didn't melt. The salad was just ok. The kicker is that I had to pay to eat two shrimp!! This is the worst meal I've had in all of Richmond. Sorry savory grains but not coming back.... Ever

Very disappointing. Food took over an hour to arrive. My husband did not get the item he ordered because the hostess had given him the wrong menu (we were there for brunch and she gave him the regular menu). I ordered the summer salad and it was so bland. The tomatoes, corn, and feta were almost flavorless. Hardly any feta, and they forgot the avocado. Grilled shrimp were blah. The salad left a bad aftertaste. My son had the kale salad, which was also bland. Nice atmosphere, but the food was not worth the price.

My sisters and I dined on a Saturday night. We were seated promptly. Service was ok. Restaurant itself very nice. We ordered an appetizer, hot crab dip. It was just ok, not as chunky as I liked. From the appetizer, it took about a hour for our entrees to come out. Waitress didn't check on us during that time. I ordered the meatloaf, which was very dry. The sauce was encrusted in the meat like it had been cooked too long. I could only eat the middle. Bake potato ok. Green beans very good. My sister got the rabbit pot pie. She said it was good but other wasn't a pot pie, more like a sandwich. My other sister got rockfish, which she enjoyed. I may give this place another chance since it got such high reviews.

A good first visit with my nephew. We walked in around 8:30 pm on a Wednesday night, and the place had largely cleared out by then. They were out of oysters, but that was OK because we were interested in other stuff. I started with the grilled apple salad, which was very good. My flank steak was as I expected flank steak to be and had a good sauce on it. The mac and cheese side was unspectacular but OK, and the broccolini was cooked just right. My nephew seemed to like his shrimp and grits. The service was fine, but the attitudes were somewhat lackadaisical. We'll definitely be back, as it's in the 'hood.

Savory Grain is becoming one of our go-to neighborhood places. The food is consistently yummy and the beer and wine selection is top notch. Service is extremely friendly and they go out of their way to accommodate, even when it's very busy. I especially love the pierogis and the chef's burger.

Came here on a Saturday night for a birthday dinner. Made an impromptu reservation that was welcomed and accommodated at very short notice. Sat at a table towards the back which was perfect bc i could people watch and watch as the food was being run out and help to make my decision a bit easier. Rachel, our server, was awesome! Gave great descriptions and suggestions. We started out with beer flights and each tried 6 different (way too many great options to choose just one). They came in the most adorable cupcake pans!! Loved it ! Next we had the Calamari which was hard choice between that and the smoked Gouda dip but was very pleased! Probably the best calamari we've had especially with the fried egg and chorizo! Next we moved onto entrees which i made the easy choice of meatloaf (my favorite meal) and my friend chose the rockfish special. The meatloaf was to die for!!! The bourbon glaze on top was sooo good and the mashed potatoes were a cheesy perfection! The rockfish was good but nothing can compare to the meatloaf. The rockfish came with redpepper and horseradish mashed potatoes which were surprisingly tasty!! Despite the other review of the bread pudding, ours was so soft and the perfect bread pudding consistency which was accompanied with some delicious homemade vanilla ice cream!! Will definitely be back next time I'm in town!

This place is amazing i was at the soft opening and the regular to the public opening as well. People really need to stop complaining about slow service on the first day the place was open, it is very difficult to open a restaurant and have it running smoothly on the first day. Sure the food took a little longer than expected BUT IT WAS THEIR FIRST NIGHT BEING OPEN! the food is amazing and the beer selection is huge for a place this size. Since I live so close and liked it so much I went 3 nights in a row, and each night the service got better and better. The atmosphere was great and whoever the owners hired to decorate it did a wonderful job. I heard people at the next table talking about the owner's commitment to being green and recycling, this was confirmed by my "to go" container that was made of recycled material. So far there is nothing on the menu that hasn't been wonderful, I highly recommend the sausage dip appetizer, and the Rock fish Entree. As I said earlier the beer selection is huge with something like 24 craft beers on tap I started at the tap on the far left and worked my way to the right and they were all really good. At the moment they have beer and wine only but I asked and the liquor is coming soon. This place is the next big thing and I am going there again next Pay Day

Excellent food, great atmosphere. Previous restaurants at this spot have always lacked something here or there, but this one seems not to. Maybe it's just the feng shui of adding the bar, but something noticeable has changed in the room.

I literally just ate dinner here and I can't wait to go back. Every table was filled and the staff were busy. Still, everyone who took care of us did so with a smile. Coming from someone else in the service industry, that goes a long way. The pork sliders were insane. I mean so good that I regret sharing them. My company and I truly enjoyed the experience and I can't wait to try the rest of the menu!

Really wanted to like this place. Close to where I live and I would love this area of Broad to thrive. That said, SG has a long way to go in my opinion. Way too many good spots in RVA to put out what I considered average food. T The good - the service was really strong and ourt waitress knew the beer selection and menu well. She was helpful and patient and made thoughtful recommendations. The place was clean with a good vibe and atmosphere. Also the carrot soup was excellent and the fried calmari was good as well. Both well prepared and seasoned and the fried egg on the calmari was an interesting and effective touch. The not so good - For all the hype about the beers thay serve they had scratched off the menu all the ones that they didn't have and I swear there may have been more not available than available. If that is one of their positioning statements they need to do a better job being in-stock. As for the food, the entrees/salads were mediocre at best. They quail was done well but the butter beans were bland and overcooked. The zuchinni was served in some type of casarole with breading, cheese and carrots and was just plain unappealing. All of it was luke warm at best. The kale salad proved to be a bit tough with simple pieces of cheese shaved on top. Fairly plain and nothing that made you sit up and take notice. Again, I wish the SG nothing but the best and will certainly stop in for a beer but i hope that they step up their game a little. As noted RVA has too many good resturaunts to put out average food.

The meatloaf is out of this world, this coming from someone who has never particularly enjoyed meatloaf. The description just sounded so appetizing I felt obligated to try it. So glad I did. They also have a great beer selection and do decently priced flights. Definitely recommended!

Make sure you have a couple hours to wait. Food takes forever as soon as half of the tables are sat. I have children that work in the restaurant business so I'm patient. But then when sides were wrong and temperature taken items were overcooked, nothing extra was done other than offering a redo. We had already been at the table for an hour and a half; and considering we had had two nice bottles of wine plus cocktails and appetizers, I would think the manager would have cared about our business and overall experience. The serves was A+ and the chef came out and asked how everything was. Atmosphere is like eating within your own home: clean and simple with feminine touches. Things were good but there are similar places like this in Richmond that care about my business more then here. Will not be back.

We went to Saivory Grain Friday night. The atmosphere is great and the wait staff very nice. We didn't have to wait long for a table. I ordered the special margarita and the bartender told me it was spicy. I can handle spicy, however this drink was horrible. It burned the back of my throat it was so spicy. Everyone in the group tasted it and could not figure out how this was supposed to be a good drink. I am not sure if my tongue was damaged but the rest of the meal was mediocre. I will try it again and hope for a better meal.

Our first experience will keep us from going back again. We waited 1.5 hours for our dinner after being seated. We heard a lot of excuses that left us wondering why they need to make excuses. Are they not ready for dinner guests? The server than brought out each dish one at a time. By the time all 4 of us received our dinner everything was cold. We got a free dessert but the cake was equal to cardboard. The seating was uncomfortable and the HVAC system could not keep all the guests comfortable. We will not go back.

Having had an unfriendly drink experience at the restaurant next to The National, pre-show, we were looking for a palate-cleansing post-show dining experience. Unfortunately, we showed up at the Savory Grain 20 minutes before the kitchen closed. Feeling horrible for being "those" customers, we were seated, treated nicely, NOT rushed and had a wonderful meal! That being said, make sure you make reservations when you plan on going during regular meal times! I ordered the shrimp and grits. It was unlike any s&g that I have had to date! The flavors were perfect, the portion was more than generous. I don't think I'll ever order that dish anywhere else, for fear of being disappointed. My friend ordered 3 sides. White cheddar Mac and cheese, fiddlehead ferns, and wilted spinach. The fiddleheads were the standout and made me wish I'd ordered some for myself... Run, don't walk... Plan on spending a few bucks, you will enjoy the food!

Wish I could post a positive review but when you're served the fresh catch of the day & you can't cut it with a knife, something's not right. Won't be back!

Go Eat!!

The best new foodie place in Richmond. Good wines and service

We love savory grain! It's our go to restaurant as its close to our house. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is cool. They have live music some nights. The shrimp and grits are to die for. They usually have homestead ice cream too which is delicious. We highly recommend!

First meal when I moved to RVA. Nice atmosphere, music was a little loud on the inside but definitely would return. Intimate setting with the lights dimmed

The food here is amazing. So far my favorite has been the meatloaf. I highly recommend it.
