don't let the exterior fool you. I used to go to china panda, but stopped when their food and customer service deteriorated. this place has very friendly people and great food. they have the best crab Rangoon in Richmond. lemony, soft and flavorful. I have never eaten inside, but it's always quiet when I pick up. where is everyone? they're missing a great spot for Chinese food.

I ordered delivery which was rather quick. The food, however, was not very hot. The TSO was tasteless and had no spice. I could barely find the shrimp in the shrimp roll. Very disappointed in the food even though their service was good.

Below average Chinese, food with off-notes like the oil has been re-used too many times for frying.

I think the service was wonderful but the food and overall quality was lacking, it appeared to be well off and outside of one other table we were the only ones inside. Don't get me wrong the staff was friendly as can be, but when we order hot tea. It wasn't hot barely warm and it was from a large container of premise tea so it wasn't even a tea bag or concentrated enough to taste better than colored water. This was the just the roll than impeded my experience and I felt lack luster for sure... The food tasted great but the next day everyone in my party of four had some digestive issues to say the least

Wow, what's old is new again! This place has been around forever and with food like this it's plain to see why. My mom and I decided to eat in, and the service was really nice. We were seated immediately and our orders taken. Drinks were then promptly bought to the table. There was very pleasant music playing ( a variety of oldies) there was also a tv over near the bar area. Let me get to the food!!! I decided to stick to a Chinese food basic and I ordered the chicken fried rice. My thought was if they mess this up then they have no business even being open! My mom ordered shrimp egg foo young, we both ordered egg rolls. The food came out after a short wait, the egg foo young came out on a plate loaded with patties, gravy and rice!! The chicken fried rice came out in a covered stainless steel pedestal platter which was old school and freaking AMAZING!!!! The shrimp egg foo young was cooked to perfection, well seasoned gravy and loaded with shrimp. The chicken fried rice was loaded with chicken, eggs, onions, sprouts etc. It was so good it's all I can freaking think about!!!! This place is really not near my house, but it was definitely worth the trip. They will definitely be seeing more of me in the near future! I believe they do a lot of delivery & take out business, but if you can I would recommend that at least once you eat in. It's an older restaurant so it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of some of the newer joints, but don't count this place out because it's definitely still a contender!

First off, looks are deceiving. This establishment looks so ghetto and run-down from the outside, BUT once I stepped in, I was so pleasantly surprised! This place is very nicely decorated, clean, and a cute Chinese restaurant. You could tell its a restaurant that has a lot of loyal regulars. Apparently it is the oldest chinese restaurant in Richmond! The staff was very friendly and attentive and the food came out quick. I had the teriyaki sticks, crab rangoon and seafood soup. Everything was flavored deliciously. I especially loved the teriyaki sticks because they were so flavorful and tender. The crab rangoon was crunchy and delicious, and the soup kept me wanting more. The only downside is that I wished the seafood soup had more seafood in it ;) But other than that, I enjoyed my experience here, and the prices were very affordable. I will also be returning for those teriyaki sticks!

Nicer on the inside than the outside would lead you to believe. Brocolli was cooked perfectly and the tofu was just the right texture (homestyle). The service was gracious and not intrusive. Their prices are ridiculously low. The food here perhaps won't astound you, but it's good.

Great Chinese restaurant with convenient parking and a surprisingly good atmosphere considering its low price. Went here with a lady friend a few weeks ago and it really impressed me. It's right off of Broad street with its own little parking lot (much appreciated!). The typical things most Chinese restaurants fall short on don't affect this place: the service is great, there's no real language barrier, and we weren't pushed out as soon as we finished our meals. If I'm in the mood for Chinese, this is where I'm headed! Overall: 4.0 ------------------------ Pros: -Great little parking lot right next to the store right off Broad street. I wish other Richmond restaurants had such easy parking! -Service was great and expedient. -Food was excellent and every bit what I expected. General Tso is victorious again! Cons: -None, really. It was quite good. :)

Looking for my go-to Chinese delivery in RVA. I've tried Joy Garden twice. I might re-order, but I wasn't wowed by anything. Pros: quick, hot delivery & decent price. Cons: Egg Foo Young was packed in its gravy so it was soggy when it arrived. Most places package the gravy separately. General Tso's chicken was not spicy at all. It had a sweet watery sauce, the broccoli was overcooked, and there was pineapple. It was more like sweet & sour chicken.

These days, most Chinese places all get their stuff from some central distributor, and they're mostly the same: characterless yellow fried rice, egg rolls that come frozen 100 to a box, sauces out of a can. Joy Garden, though, is still the same as it was when I was a little boy in the early Seventies. They actually make the food themselves, and it's magnificent. The fried rice is my own favorite, and I often get just that and egg rolls, but the Lo Mein and String Beans with Shrimp are excellent as well (the brown sauce with that is perfect). The Mei Fun makes a nice change now and then, and I could drink a gallon of their Egg Drop Soup. Also, although they're not on the menu, they'll make you a Garlic Chicken or a Chicken Curry if you ask, and the Curry is just about the best thing ever when mixed with the fried rice. Finally, the woman who runs the place (we call her Mrs. Joy) ought to have a statue on Monument Avenue. She's elegant, lovely, super-competent, and always remembers her customers. She's the best restaurant owner in town, in my opinion. So, if you're okay with the cookie-cutter Chinese you get most places, you can go anywhere. But if you want the real, homemade stuff we grew up with, you literally cannot do better than Joy Garden.

A coworker raved about this place so I decided to give it a try (thank you to the heavens that she paid). Even for Americanized Chinese food, this place is bad. The interior is worn down and I was truly surprised this place had business. My water had something floating in it, my Sweet & Sour Chicken (picture) was bland, and the sauce was runny. The staff was very friendly. They say everyone has a bad day, but I'm sorry, I will not be giving this place a second chance.

Nice restaurant that provides both delivery and takeout. The price was reasonable and the food delicious! The staff was friendly and gave me meal recommendations based on my taste. Nice portions sizes too, so I was able to save some for lunch the next day.

If you are an experienced Chinese food eater, this is basic level one Chinese food. I ordered the General Tso but I don't believe it was General Tso's unless they just make theirs differently it was very sweet and had pineapples. The fried rice was pretty plain. The food was pretty inexpensive and friendly quick delivery.

Three weary travelers placed an order for Chinese food before embarking on a night on the town. Joy Garden not only managed to get our food to us ahead of schedule, it was some of the best stuff I've eaten for a great price. Seriously thinking of making the 700 mile drive south for this pork with rice noodles dish I got and can't remember the name of but it was so good.

For cheap chinese takeout, this place can't be beat. Egg drop soup was just right which rarely happens! Best General Tso's Chicken in the city. The crab rangoons are a must. Friendly and fast service.

I received a warm welcome when I walked in the door...the aroma coming from the kitchen smelled delicious. Service and Food was so much better than the large chain restaurants I visited in Richmond. The Pepper Steak was delicious! Outstanding Egg Drop soup...tastes just like the soup at the famous Canton Village in New York City. I love the classic Neon sign on the building...it is so inviting. The stylish interior has a "1960's moderne" sort of feel. Our food was ready fast and served graciously. Very Reasonable prices that match the cool Retro Decor! My bill was very reasonable, plenty of cash left over to leave a real nice tip for our most gracious server. (I believe it was the owner's wife.) I enjoyed my visit on 9 January and will definitely come back on my next business trip to Richmond.

I've been to this restaurant exactly once, and I will not be going back. It was smoky and worn down, and even our booth was sticky. My husband ordered General Tso's, and it was greasy with an overly sticky sauce. I ordered egg foo yong and was APPALLED when it came out- it had brown gravy on it! Like the stuff in the cans that you buy for your turkey on Thanksgiving! I couldn't believe it. I mean, I understand that a lot of restaurants have adapted their dishes to meet the palattes of Richmonders, and I can totally see diners serving gravy with french fries... But brown chicken gravy on egg foo yong? That's not for me.

I've been going to The Joy Garden since before I was born. Literally. It's been a favorite of my parents since my mother immigrated here from Germany. It's the only Chinese resturant she ever wants to go to. The Joy Garden has been around for 40+ years, and while the interior (really, really )shows this, the food is good, and the prices are good. It's sad to see it so empty these days, as it used to be jam packed in days of old. The owners are super sweet, and while I know that they're making most of their income on carry out and delivery now, it's still nice to go and eat there, and for me....take a little trip down memory lane. :)

After driving past Joy Garden approximately 9 million times, I finally decided to order delivery from there last night. I was pleasantly surprised when I called to place my order. The person on the phone spoke very good English, was easy to understand and finished the call by thanking me for ordering from them. Much nicer than some of the delivery around town where you're not sure they actually got your order and pretty much hang up on you after you give your credit card number. When the food arrived, it seemed homemade. My shrimp roll was similar to an egg roll, but with baby shrimp in it, and although it was a bit light on filling, it tasted fresh. The steamed dumplings were a bit doughy and undercooked, but the look and flavor with plenty of fresh ginger definitely showed that they were homemade, not defrosted like at many of the other places in town. I'd probably order them again since I bet we just caught them on an off day with regard to cook time. I also got egg drop soup, which was as enjoyable as the egg drop soup anywhere. For my main course I got Szechuan Bean Curd. The tofu was perfectly fried. It was crisp on the outside, but light, fluffy and soft on the inside. The sauce was tangy with a hint of sweetness on the finish. For a dish with a red star next to it, I would have liked a bit more spice, but in any case the flavor was more complex than your average Chinese spicy brown sauce. Along with tofu, the dish contained broccoli and pineapple. I didn't expect the pineapple, but it definitely added another layer of flavor to the dish. In the future, I think I might ask them to add extra vegetables, as there was a whole lot more tofu than broccoli and pineapple. My boyrfriend's Sesame Chicken was also well spiced, perfectly fried and tasty in general. Portions were also big. We were both pretty hungry, but we couldn't get to the bottom of our delivery boxes. All in all, I think Joy Garden may just be my new Chinese delivery standby here in town. I'm looking forward to sampling more menu items.

I've driven past this place a thousand times and liked their neon "cocktail" sign so I thought I'd give it a try. The decor inside was definitely Chinese. I liked that and it smelled pretty good. The menu said that Joy Garden was the first Chinese restaurant in the Richmond area and I believe it... it looked a little run down. True to the sign there was an abundance of fruity cocktails on the menu and all of them were under $5. I stuck with the hot tea... but to my dismay it tasted fruity and I don't love fruity tea with savory foods... Moving on... we ordered beef and broccoli and sezchuan chicken. It was decent... not bad, but not that great either. I felt that everything had a lot of thick sauce on it. Something interesting they offered was what you usually see on a lunch special at places. For around $7 you can get a dish, soup, rice and maybe a spring roll. It was nice that they had that for dinner even though we didn't utilize the deal.

I stumbled on this place since I was in town for a conference and wanted to walk to a restaurant rather than drive and this place was close by. I admit that the outside does not look promising and so I walked in with some trepidation. The place was totally empty except for one other booth that was occupied. The decor and the place could use an update, but I figured what the heck, I am new in town and if it is really bad, I can always get into the car and drive to a fast food place along Broad St. I ordered the Orange crispy chicken with eggroll, white rice and wonton soup. I stuck with a soda rather than try a cocktail or a hot tea. The food arrived quickly. The Wonton Soup was good, the wonton had a good amount of filling, the green onions were fresh and crispy and they did provide an ample amount of fried wonton skins to add to the soup. So far so good. At this point I figured the dinner would not be a total loss since the soup was really good. They did provide mustard and sweet and sour sauce. I did not try them, in part because the mustard sauce seemed to have been in need of a stir and so I figured it had been sitting in the jar a tad too long. I did notice that the delivery and take out business seemed to be going well since several people kept stopping by to get take out and one staff member seemed to be off doing a delivery run. My orange chicken arrived with a good helping of white rice, a good size eggroll and the sauce did have orange peel as well as several peppers - certainly earning the qualification of "spicy". I could not finish the meal since the portion size was huge, but the overall flavor of the food was very good. I have to say that this restaurant was a real surprise because of the excellent quality of the good. The veggies in the dish were broccoli, carrots and peppers. But the real winner was the nicely balanced sauce, the well prepared crispy chicken that was truly crispy despite being covered in a sauce. You could tell that the chicken was fresh, not frozen and reheated. The eggroll had a good amount of filling and was not greasy at all. Overall, I was very happy with my dining experience in this place. I just wish that the place had more tables occupied. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming and the quality of the staff and the food deserve a more crowded restaurant.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
