Very nice quiet clean restaurant. There were not many people at the tables as we had a late dinner, but became evident that this is a local favorite at every other minute a customer came in for a takeout order. As a fan of thai food, I was not disappointed. The service was very friendly. The food was excellent. If you don't like spicy, be sure to specify mild as some dishes are spicy. I really enjoyed the wild boar basil entre.

Delicious!!!! Don't let the exterior fool you. Their food is yummy. Great take out and great to just eat at the mellow bar area. Friendly attentive staff.

Great food for a great price! Have had the green curry (spicey but so delicious!) and chicken pad thai and both did not disappoint. Lunch and menu prices differ by roughly $1, and the food has always been incredibly fresh and hot for take out. Highly recommend!

Great flavor on the Red Curry Beef but wish I had a little bit more food on the plate!

Very solid lunch spot. Near my office but I had never tried it. Nicer on the inside than it appears on the outside, so don't be deterred by curb appeal. Drunken Noodle was appropriately spicy and very tasty. I would put their food on par or a bit above Tara Thai but cheaper and no mall required.

Food is really flavorful and authentic! The waitstaff treated us very well. We definitely will go back!

First experience here was takeout but I was impressed with both the quality and quantity of the Thai food. Great Drunken Noodle. I'll definitely be coming back!

Very good Pad Thai and nice staff. I have not eaten in but everything looks nice and clean. There is a good looking bar as well.

Well, considering there are slim pickings with regards to Thai restaurants in the Richmond area I give this place 3 stars. I moved here 2 years ago and was looking for good places to dine. The food here is authentic, but the portion sizes are small. I'm not sure what it is about Richmond Thai restaurants, but the portions are just not up to par in comparison to Washington State, Texas, and NYC. Tonight we ordered the Green Curry-Good but too salty for my taste. I think it just depends on the nights you go because the first time we had it there-it was spot on. The Phad Thai needs a bit more sauce (it was a 'lil dry). Thai basil chicken was good. Tom Yum soup needed more flavor and the shrimp were very small. ***SERVICE***I was surprised to see my bill when there was a 18% gratuity added onto it. The waitress then informed me that for a party of 5 or more gratuity is included. SERIOUSLY!!! I'm not one to usually complain, but come on now. Yes, we are a family of five (two adults and 3 young children), but my daughter is only 10 months. She didn't even eat any of the food and they definitely weren't servicing her. We have come in here before-same family of five and they have never done this before. If there was superb service provided I would not have minded the added gratuity, but if you have to sit yourself, pass out your own plates, and ask for utensils--This service charge should NOT be charged or made mandatory. I'll probably pass on this place and just make special trips out to Short Pump toward Thai Flavor off of Cox Rd. or in Mechanicsville to Phad Thai Restaurant, or Ratee Thai on W. Broad St.

Good news! While Ruang Tong looks like it's not much, since it's in a deserted looking little shopping center, Ruang Tong serves up some pretty tasty Thai food. I ordered the pad see eew and asked them to add duck, which the waitress advised me against and warned me she couldn't give me a refund. No worries! I devoured the whole thing. Not the best I've ever had, but still pretty damn tasty. The service was excellent and super prompt, but that might have to do with the fact that I was the only person in the restaurant. If you're in the area and craving Thai food, this is a solid spot!

I don't get it ordering shrimp pad Thai and not getting any bean sprouts. Sorry but WTF. The waiter did t even ask used we wanted dessert or another drink. NOT RECOMMENDED AND WE WILL NOT BE BACK!!!!!'!!!!

Richmond's heavy weight champion of Thai food. This place, as far as we're concerned, holds the crown! Watch the throne!

I'm leaning towards the five star rating based on the food, but there are drawbacks. Let's lean into those: It's in the same strip mall as Galley, Once Upon a Vine Too, etc. It's an ugly chunk of real estate. The interior isn't bad, but it clearly hasn't had much of a sprucing up in years. I've never dined in, but both times I've ordered take-out, I've sat at the bar and had a beer. I share the same concerns as a lot of the reviewers: the place always seems empty and I'm worried one day it just won't be there anymore. It's family-friendly, casual, and nothing to write home about on the inside. The food is tremendous, though. I've had the Drunken Noodle, which was as good as any I've had once the actual temperature of the food cooled down. Tonight I had the Pad Prik Prao, which is a spicy red sauce with protien of choice, onions and peppers. It was rich, flavorful and delicious. My wife had the Thai Basil with chicken. They gladly kept the spice out for her. She's not much of a Thai fan, but finished this entire meal in a single sitting, despite not really being hungry for the last spoonful. Powerful basil, but not enough to overpower the other ingredients. We also agreed that we could have eaten a dozen of the crispy rolls. I'm trying not to get attached, because I'm worried it won't be there in a year, but if you'd like to prove me wrong, give it a shot. It's become my Thai go-to location on the South Side.

Love this Thai family run restaurant. Food is always delicious with right amount of spice. I love the flat noodle dishes. Very efficient service and nice wait staff too!

If they'd spruce up the front (they really need to PAINT the sun-bleached front door) and the interior a bit, I'd give Ruang Tong 5 stars. The food is terrific. And the main reason we go out is for the food, so they rate the best for that. Honestly delicious! The service was good as all servers help all the tables. As others say here, I do wonder if they can stay in business because it wasn't that busy on a Sat. night. I did enjoy that it was quiet enough to sit and talk and enjoy the meal -- no rush. So go by and give them a try, even if it's for take out!

BAD experience... Went here for the first time this past weekend for dinner, and it was a very bad experience. The restaurant was 1/3 full, and everything took FOR-E-VER. Once we were seated, it took at least 10 minutes for our server to come over for the first time. I had to flag him down. We ordered appetizer spring rolls, and after waiting for 25 minutes, I finally asked ANOTHER server to check on it- he walked in the kitchen and a few minutes later the spring rolls came out. Our entrees took a full hour to come out and they were lunch size portions at best (see the picture I will post). I've never seriously considered walking out of a restaurant, but I was very very close to doing it. The only saving grace (the two stars) is that the flavor was good. Otherwise this place would get 0 stars from my experience. I want to try this place again, but I don't know if I can. I frequently play darts across the parking lot, so it would be easy to walk over... but I don't want that experience again.

We aren't Thai experts, but like spicy food with good flavor. Picked up an order of Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles (Spicy Hot). The flavor was very good and it was nice and spicy without the spice overwhelming the flavor. I believe spiciness breaks down into mild, medium, hot, extra hot and nuclear. Nuclear is where the spice is so strong you lose the flavor. Their spicy hot perfectly hit the extra hot category. With the two orders I believe you can feed 3-4 people so food was plentiful. Will definitely order from them again. UPDATE This post just now uploaded after I downloaded the app but it was probably written a year ago. I concur with other reviewers that business doesn't appear to be brisk. I drive 20 minutes each way for their takeout as their food is better than the Thai restaurants in Midlothian. Hope they stay in business or better yet move to Midlo!

This is my first visit to Ruang Tong. I was in search of some Thai food with actual flavor, and Ruang Tong did not disappoint. They have a pretty good drink special from 5-7, even on weekends. We got the papaya salad and two curries. I really loved the papaya salad, which was spicy and sweet. I don't think it was too spicy, though, I loved it!!! So as you can see, the mission was successful. The curries were delicious, though I definitely preferred the Penang to the yellow curry. It's a very low key place, but clean, and the service was very nice!

I can't even begin to describe how great the pad Thai is here. The portion size is great because it is filling but leaves you wanting more. The taste is spectacular. You can order it with your voice of protein from tofu to beef to shrimp and chicken. The beer selection is wonderful. The staff is so friendly. I love coming here with my fiancé, we always have good service and great food.

Have eaten here many times and prior to yesterday would have given this place 5 stars. On Sunday, returning from a day in Williamsburg, we decided to order takeout and pick up on the way home. Previously any takeout order was done to perfection with great flavor and still warm when we got home. When I placed the order I was told it would be ready in 30-35 minutes. I arrived within 30 minutes and our food was sitting on the counter. We hurried home and found that our food was cold. No flavor and the Pai Thi was sticky. I am sure that our food was on the counter for at least 15 minutes. Will never attempt takeout again

I have been there few times for lunch with my colleagues and I found their simple menu and good food always satisfying. Sadly, I only see only one or two other customers during my visits and I think it is partly because of the location and lack of marketing. The strip mall where the Ruang Tong, look so crappy and extremely depressing. One would never think some good restaurants are located in this strip mall. Anyway, check it out!

Great service, reasonable prices, and awesome drunken noodles. The server is very nice and will ask what level of spiciness you would like, too. I haven't tried much on the menu, but as I mentioned earlier, this place has excellent drunken noodles.

Here's a contradiction for you: I love Thai. I hate spicy. Not that I hate it, but rather that my face and mouth cannot handle spicy food. So in order to reap the benefits of the many flavors of Thai, I always emphasize "mild." I did so here, when ordering for three people. I'll spare the gory details, but lets just say if that was mild, then I'm a winged grapefruit. The 'mild' was so hot and spicy, that none of us - even the man who relishes spicy food - could eat it. They clearly cater to a very tiny market of masochists, or else they prepared our order wrong. Either way, we won't be back.

I didn't understand the negative reviews about this place...until today. We were the only three people in the restaurant at lunch time. The waiter didn't write down our order and then proceeded to forget the papaya salad that we had ordered as an appetizer. If you can't remember the order for one, single table, what in the world is going to happen when the place is packed? Last time we were there, I tried my sister-in-law's pad thai with tofu and it was perfect. I ordered it today and was extremely disappointed. The tofu wasn't lukewarm, it was cold. It was as if it had been fried yesterday, taken out of the refrigerator today and mixed into the pad thai noodles. The tofu had a nasty, greasy taste that was horrible. My husband had the fried rice and that was really good, so at least I could share that dish with him. We ordered plain noodles for our 5 y.o. Last time we were there, the noodles were in a tiny bowl, which was the perfect way to serve them to someone that age. Today, he received about a pound of noodles on an adult-sized plate. It was a complete waste of food. This totally bums me out, because my first experience here was great and I have told many people to check out this restaurant. The only good thing about our experience today was that I didn't overeat and didn't feel guilty about hitting up a gelato place on the way home.

Good thai, friendly service. Kitchen can be a bit slow, even if not busy. That said, the noodle dishes are great.

Their food was hot and it tasted good. we came toward the end of the lunch time rush, jence we were the only people there. My mom wanted to have fried rice instead of plain rice with her order, just because she hates plain rice. Our server either couldn't or wouldn't substitute that for her, he instead urged her to get a whole order of fried rice, which defeats the purpose but nevertheless the way he explained it sounded a tad bit condescending perhaps he didn't mean it that way, but it came out that way. Overall the food was hot, flavorful the veggies crunchy, we asked for thai hot and, oh! was it hot.You get your moneys worth, as far as Thai restaurants it's good. enjoyed our quiet lunch.

I've been to Thailand, and pad thai is one of my favorite meals. So I'm delighted to say that the pad thai here is hands down the best pad thai I've had stateside. There was only one other table seated when I went on a Wednesday evening, so I will be very sad if it closes.

I was trying to find some place close to work for lunch and I enjoyed it enough to recommend it as a good take out option. If you're limited on time based on my visit, I would suggest you don't sit down. There were about four tables sitting when I got there, one already served, a two top and a group of eight but somehow it still took a little longer than you would expect, almost like they aren't expecting much lunch business (possible). While they weren't very busy and a little slow to move, they somehow forgot my Thai Tea, which I was interested in comparing to others I've had. Anyway, beyond the timing, the service was friendly. I decided to stick with a staple to be the judge and went with Pork Pad Thai and Won Ton soup. The won ton soup had a strong star anise taste, similiar to Pho broth and was heavily peppered unexpected but enjoyable. The Pad Thai came out piping hot (my standard experience at Thai restaurants) and flavorful. The sauce was a bit darker and more noticeable than I've had at some places and the noodles were a little thinner than those at Thai Flavor (Richmond, West End) but I thoroughly enjoyed them. The condiment caddy didn't contain some of the options that you would usually get but I added the ground red pepper and the liquid condiment with red peppers for the spicy kick that I enjoy. I waited a day for the review to see how leftovers played out since it was such a big meal and I can say, it reheats well but is a little more oily day two than some Thai food I've had. Worth going back for a quick Thai lunch. I noticed the other reviews mentioned price, this was $16 for soup, pad thai and water.

Surely quite the unassuming restaurant from the exterior, but this place was a great find! My friends and I were on our way home when we caught a glimpse of the restaurant in a shopping center on Forest Hill and spontaneously decided to give it a try. Our server (and owner as well, I think) welcomed us in with a friendly smile and was very accommodating! He really showed his appreciation for us coming in. Collectively, we tried the Thai tea, the drunken noodles, the tofu pad thai, the tom yum soup, and a spicy chicken stir-fry dish I forget the name of at the moment. I personally didn't like the Thai tea but my roommate enjoyed it, and the tom yum soup was a little off-setting to me but everything else was very flavorful and spicy! I appreciated that they did not dilute the spice when I requested the "Thai Hot" level of spiciness - some places think that customers don't know what they can handle and don't truly add the spice requested! If you're in the Forest Hill area and are craving some Thai, this place will do the job!

Prices have gone up a little. Usually I wouldn't mind but the entree that used to be almost $12 is now almost $14. And If you add $2 more to each item it ends up costing more than I'd like to pay at the end of the night. Still great food and the people that work there are great. The price change doesn't keep me from going there, but it does change the frequency.

We've been there on two occasions. At times I don't write a review the first time. This is my second time dining in this restaurant.. Both occasions were OK for me. My normal order in Thai restaurants is Shrimp Curry or Chicken Curry with a different appetizer plus Spring rolls that my wife and I split. Both occasions would receive 3 stars. However, close to 2stars on our last trip. We were dining w/ another couple and one of them ask for their food extremely mild....it came out so hot I couldn't have eaten it. It had to be sent back. However, this is a review that was favorable due to my dinner. I love curry!!!

My boyfriend and I came in for lunch today for the first time. We were first really surprised because the inside was actually really nicely decorated compared to the outside. Staff was extremely friendly throughout the whole meal and it was just a really nice environment. We started off with the ginger salad because it comes with lunch. The ginger dressing was really good, very strong on the ginger, very refreshing taste compare to most restaurants which taste more like sugary sweet than ginger. We ordered the spring roll and calamari for appetizer. I personally is a huge fan of calamari, ever place that has it, I will try it. I liked it a lot, most places now uses the thin calamari compared to the big ones that curl that ruang tong uses. Tara Thai at short pump used to have it but changed. My boyfriend had the Beef Basil, presentation was nice and the flavor was really good. He said it was perfect to his taste because a lot of other Thai places tend to make it overly spicy. I had the Shrimp Pad Thai, I am used to the fatter noodles but ruang tong uses the skinny noodles and have some fat pieces in it. Flavor was good though, I really liked it. I'm the type to go to different Thai restaurants and try the same exact dish to compare. This is definitely a new top favorite on my list. Then we ended the meal with mango rice cake, it is standard with half a mango and rice cake but I always wish there was more mango. (I just love mango haha) Great way to end the meal, so good! We already planned on coming back for dinner next week and I would like to try other good food from here.

Fair Thai food in Richmond. Had the steamed dumplings, Tom Khar Gai, Laun Gai and Emerald Curry. All of the dishes were just okay and one note. Will not return. Bummer! We love Thai and were hoping this would be a winner.

Ruan Tong is the closest Thai restaurant to home so we've ordered carry out a handful of times over the past year. We've tried the Pad Thai, Tom Khar, fresh rolls, spring rolls, and the beef salad - our standard Thai repertoire. Everything has always been good - not great, not bad, but decent. Reading the reviews I'm tempted to expand my horizons next time and maybe try something new. The service has always been very friendly. Even when we've unintentionally stopped by near closing for carryout, they greet us with smiles and welcome our business. The service alone will keep me going back to explore more of the menu.

I visit Ruang Tong at least once a week, as I live in the area. But I'd make a trip over to the Stratford Hills Shopping Center just for Thai food, if I was in another part of town. So good, and the owners are amazingly friendly. Only caveat is, the spices can be INTENSE. Take that in mind when asking for extra levels of "hot." I can usually do "Thai Hot" but I've been reduced to a quivering, hiccuping mess of tears when I've been too ambitious here. My absolute favorite dish is the rama chicken - always fresh and the perfect blend of flavor and heat.

  • Meredith B.

Absolutely delicious and the staff was very sweet while I waited for my takeout. Anyone without heat tolerance, I caution against trying to be particularly brave- I ordered without specifying and suspect, therefore, that I got 'mild' which was still pleasantly piquant. The ginger pork was less exciting, though pleasant enough, probably nothing to write home about- this one I'll ask for spice next time. Lunch is exceedingly reasonable and still a good amount of food... and I particularly appreciate that I can get lunch specials to go, unlike some other local Thai places.

I'm hopping on this bandwagon and saying this is definitely the best Thai in Richmond. Last night my friend and I stopped in for dinner and were blindsided by the stereotypical, over the top nice but certainly cheesy Thai restaurant greeting. You know the kind, the one where 4 people greet you with huge smiles and then 4 people stop by your table regularly to check on you, always smiling and laughing. It's intimidating at first but certainly warms your soul up a little. The food was great. I had the steamed dumplings to start with. These were good, not the highlight of dinner but I ate them all no problem. I'd love it if they were just a tad more moist, as the filling really was dry. They were still great though so don't get me wrong. For my entree I had the Pad Thai (first time new restaurant go to). When it arrived I was really disappointed how bland and dry it looked but at first bite it completely surprises you. It comes off so much cleaner and lighter than most Pad Thai I've had other place, but delivers all the same great flavors. The portion size was large, price was great, and the whole dish was a success. I'll definitely return to try more things on the menu here, but I might start taking to sitting at the bar for dinner for a little more casual, less date like feel. Go check it out!

Delicious food. Haven't had a bad meal yet. Its right around the corner from my house so its supper convenient. Try the tom kha gai, fresh spring rolls, pad thai, and drunken noodles. You wont be disappointed. The owners are super friendly and accommodating. Support small businesses!!!

This 3-star rating will probably be raised to 5 after my next visit but I'm still frustrated enough from one incident to take a star away; some might have taken 3 or 4 stars, or even left the restaurant, but the food was REALLY good! We came here on a Friday night after reading Yelps about it. I usually carry enough cash to cover an unexpected situation but this night I was down to my last $15. We walked in and got a nice table, looked over the menu, ordered some dumplings for an appetizer and a cold beer. The waiter brought my beer to the table while we were waiting for the dumplings and then told me that they can only take cash tonight because their cc machine was broken. What?!? Why tell me after I've just received my cold beer and my appetizer is imminent? Why no sign on the door?? Grrrrrr this was frustrating! I didn't want to offend him by getting angry (cultural respect, etc.) so I asked where the nearest bank was. Ten minutes later, I returned to my less cold beer. Luckily he had held the appetizer in back until I returned so it was still hot but this incident greatly upset the flow of what turned out to be a wonderful meal. Anyway, back to the food. The pork and vegetable dumplings were good and nicely cooked. I also ordered a bowl of Tom Khar Gai, a chicken/ coconut/lemon grass soup which is my absolute favorite. I grew to love this soup from my college days and the standard was set pretty high all those years ago. Ruangtong's version was SO good! I'm still thinking about the depth of flavor and quality. We split an order of basil chicken that was delicious. While it only carried a 1-pepper spicy rating, it was adequate to make my forehead sweat a bit. I believe this place could kick my ass with spiciness and perhaps I'll have to try it on a cooler day when I'm wearing more absorbent clothing. As I'm writing about this memorable dinner, I'm getting less and less bothered by the cash-only incident so I'm adding 1 star back. I know this stuff happens and maybe it just happened before we arrived. They were still very friendly and the service quality didn't falter beyond this time. They still lose 1 star on this review for making me trek to an ATM while my fresh cold beer sat on the table. I will be back and I will have cash, just in case!

Best Thai I've had in Richmond thus far. The servers were so kind and friendly. I had a tom kha gai and a rama chicken. The soup was a bit on the sour side but it was a good way to start the meal. I'm a little particular on my rama chicken sauce, because I pretty much subsisted on that dish all through college, so this one was not quite up to par (slightly too watered down), but it was delicious nonetheless and the broccoli was nice and crisp and fresh. I'd rather drive out here than go the Bottom or Carytown for Thai food any day.

Randomly tried this Thai restaurant on the way home from visiting the Hugenot flatwater area and was pleasantly surprised. The spice was good and had me needing water. Friend ordered Thai Spice and it was spicy but she could handle it well (so it's probably not terribly spicy). Have tried fried tofu appetizer, Panang curry, drunken noodles. All tasty and the curry had a lot of flavor (if a tiny bit too salty). The restaurant is clean, brightish, and has ok decor. I think the 2nd best Thai restaurant I've tried behind Chadar Thai.

Yelp, you have let me down with this one. This was some form of fresh peppercorn h*ll. I ordered the Pad See Ew and my friend ordered the Pad Thai. Both were DISGUSTING. My friend's pad thai came out pink, PINK. Umm, what?? She likened the flavor of the sauce to sweet vidalia onions. I'm 100% sure that pad thai isn't supposed to taste like that. Her chicken was incredibly dry. My pad see ew came out with a visible layer of black pepper on it. I asked for it to be "American Hot" and normally that just means less hot than Thai Hot. I suppose they wanted to "americanize" it for me and give me a solid layer of black pepper so that would be the ONLY thing I could taste? Not only was there a coat of black pepper on my tounge, the noodles and tofu were painfully dry, things crunched when I ate it. I cannot believe that this place has such a high rating when the food was so incredibly terrible and expensive. Avoid this place like the black pepper plague!

Food is okay, seriously we have waited over an hour and still don't have entrees. Only 6 tables in the resteraunt that have customers.... Can't ever come back. Not enough time. Just go to elephant Thai. Better good and way better service!

We love this restaurant. The food is always great and the staff is the friendliest around. We like to be able to order thai food spicy and they are able to achieve it. My favorite is the drunken noodles with seafood. Though we've had great curry too. Our best evening is going in to the restaurant to order take-out and eating spring rolls and with a beer while waiting. They have 60 Minute IPA, too. So, beer lovers, there is something here for you too. If you go here, you will not be disappointed - be ready for flavorful food, and a staff that is completely wonderful.

My favorite Thai place in Richmond! I love the tofu pad thai, it's the most delectable meal and my favorite in all of Richmond. The owner/manager is the nicest person in the world and my boyfriend and I always get a friendly greeting when we go there. It's a shame they aren't packed all the time - this place outshines any other Thai restaurant in the area.

I'm not sure where all the reviewers have eaten but this was easily one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had in RVA. We were all excited to try this place since we love Thai food and it had 4 stars on Yelp. Here's our experience - Walked in around 6 pm - 1 table sitting, the rest of the place EMPTY - a host comes out after about 8 minutes to seat us. Takes 15 min to get water and menus. Takes 25 minutes to get 2 spring rolls. Takes 35 min to get 2 entrees - The "Deluxe Tofu" which was RAW tofu, with still somewhat frozen veggies and a side of rice, and my dish which consisted of rubbery, burnt squares of tofu, burned brocolli and bland noodles. Both dishes were disgusting and we took them home for our dogs to eat. We would have complained but no one came back to check on us other than to fill water 1 x at which point we had been in the restaurant over an hour and had just gotten our food. I will not come back here and wanted to warn others - it literally was one of the top 5 worst food, service and overall experiences I've had in RVA.

Love this place! Great food and friendly service! The Rama Chicken is AMAZING! The drunken noodles and spicy rice are fantastic as well.

An amazing Thai food experience. I'm a big fan, and we've tried a number of places in Richmond. The service is outstanding. The staff have always been friendly and go above and beyond in order to make you feel welcomed. We've quickly become regulars amd frequently get their Pad Thai, which is amazing. If you like spicy, ask for "spicy hot."

Best Thai food on Richmond. I'm a big fan of spicy foods and Ruang Tong does it right. The prices are reasonable and the staff is extremely friendly. Worth checking out.

We love this neighborhood spot! Best Thai in Richmond we have had and it is continuously delicious. Great service as well. Have plenty of space for large parties. Search this gem out!

The server who took my carry out order was friendly and helped me decide on my dish. There was one couple dining in during the early evening I visited...this restaurant seems like a good place to visit if you don't want to dine amongst a huge boisterous crowd. The Pad Thai was delicious...the ingredients were so fresh and the flavors were just right. I had seafood in mine - shrimp, scallops and squid. The serving size was enough for two, which makes the value even greater. This is a place I could see myself visiting regularly when I get a craving for Thai!

Hands down the best Thai in the City. The Basil Duck is made with some kind of magic sauce and is perfect with a couple cold Changs. Odd location but wonderful food and very friendly staff.

I have been to most of the Thai places around Richmond and this is the best bar none. I go regularly and always take customers there and have yet to hear a complaint. The staff is friendly and the food is usually promptly served. Take out is an option. The dinner portions are large, I usually order only two or three for my family of four when we do takeout.

What a hidden gem for Thai food! We ate here last week for dinner and again this week for lunch. We were greeted and seated quickly at both visits. The restaurant is quite pretty with art displayed in cases along both walls, lots of live plants along the windows and pretty table settings. The restaurant and bathrooms were immaculately clean. Staff was very friendly and helpful with the menu. All the food was delicious and very fresh. The spring rolls were amazing. Everything was plated with care and had generous size portions. The restaurant is listed as a Forest Hill address but is actually hidden from view if you are on Forest Hill. It sits at the left end of the shopping center and is hidden from view by a florist shop.

This is a nice place near forest hill which is in desperate need for other asian cusines. For starters, you can't go wrong with fried tofu as appetizers. that's my favorite and luckily, you can get that from a lot of places, not just thai. Their dipping sauce for the fried tofu is not as thick. So if you prefer thinner & runny sweet & sour sauce with crushed peanuts, this is right up your alley. I tried the panang curry, of which I've had a lot of in the richmond area. however, at this location, they way they prepared this dish, matches more closely with the Massaman curry which maybe available at other places. it is not 'orange cream' color as I'm used to. but since I also like massaman curry, it's not problem for me.

I don't remember how I found out about this place but I work close to this area. I've had some stuff to go here a few times. The food is decent for the location it's in. For real for real...the only Thai food I eat is the Pad Thai. At least that's the only memorable dish out of all the Thai food that I've had. The Pad Thai was good but was greasy. I'm not a big fan on greasy foods. Whenever I do a take out, it seems empty. At least, during the lunch time I come in. The people there are nice and try to have conversations. I never ate inside so I can't anything about the service there. All in all...it's okay akatek1

A friend of mine recommended Ruang Tong to me recently, so I decided to check it out, being a pretty big fan of Thai food. I had the Tom Yum soup to start out with, and it was very flavorful, it has a tangy lemongrass broth, with mushrooms, basil leaves and your choice of meats or tofu. I followed that up with the main course, which I ordered Panang Curry, Thai hot. It was the perfect marriage of flavor and heat, and was delectable. The staff was friendly and prompt with service, the atmosphere is somewhat mom n' pop, which is comforting. The prices are about standard fare for a Thai restaurant, between $10-15 a person. The portions are very generous for the price as well. I can confidently say that I will become a repeat customer of Ruang Tong, and would recommend it to anyone who wants to try a good Thai place and happen to be in the Forest Hill/Bon Air/Stratford Hills area.

For dinner, I ordered the tom yum soup (with shrimp) and the red curry duck. The server brought the tom yum soup, the red curry duck, and the rice all at the same time! I then asked her to take away the rice and the duck and to serve them later, heated up. The tom yum soup was not flavorful. It is supposed to be made from shrimp stock -- the result of boiling shrimp shells and maybe shrimp heads. This gives the tom yum soup its typically recognizable seafood flavor, which was not present in tonight's soup. When I was done with the soup, the server brought the rice and the duck. The rice was cold. With the availability of electric rice cookers and microwaves, how can any Asian restaurant serve cold rice nowadays? It happens. The duck was slightly dry and tough, as if it had been boiled in the red curry sauce, which lacked the smoothness that usually comes from the coconut milk that makes Thai curries so good. (The menu did identify coconut milk as one of the ingredients. Maybe not enough was used.) The duck, interestingly, had the flavor of Chinese roast pork ("cha siu," in Cantonese restaurants). I couldn't find the server when I wanted to leave, so I walked up to the cash register. The gentleman working there was very nice (and so was the server) and offered to fix the meal, but I told him I was done and had to leave.

Raungtong has awesome Thai food! I love their crispy rolls and fried tofu as appetizers - the peanut and sweet & sour sauce served with the tofu is great. For dinner, I can't speak for many of the dishes because I order the curry, usually Panang, every time - it is some of (if not) the best in Richmond for me. The service is spot on, and the owner is incredibly nice. They are very accommodating and friendly. Raungtong is hard to see since it is tucked behind a huge flower shop on Forest Hill Ave., but def. worth finding. I love Thai food, and have been to many Thai restaurants, but Raungtong is my favorite! I'm not sure why no one else has reviewed this restaurant, but check out Urban Spoon for a ton more reviews of Ruangtong.

I had the Rama with tofu and it was amazing. So was the crying tiger appetizer, super spicy. It wasn't busy so we were seated immediately. Our waitress was friendly, not overly attentive, and super helpful. Why isn't this place busier? Loved it, will be returning, and highly recommend. She even explained why they named it Crying Tiger.

My husband and I had been meaning to stop in since we noticed the name change a few months back and we're so happy we finally made it! The food was amazing. We started with the Lab Gai: very tasty ... and spicy! My husband ordered the Pad Thai with shrimp Thai hot. Now, he is usually the first one to complain that it's never hot enough for his liking, but not this time. He *loved* it and was thrilled to be drenched in sweat within a couple of bites. (Yeah, I don't get it either, but whatever floats your boat...) I had the Emerald Curry with tofu, medium hot. It was rich and flavorful; I can't wait to try their Green Curry to be able to compare. The menu is short, but all the standards are there; I often think the menus at Asian restaurants are too long, so RT's is a nice change. If you tried the old Thai places that occupied the same spot, you'll be pleased to know RT has redecorated quite a bit... it doesn't feel like the same old place, which is definitely a good thing. I'm looking forward to trying more of the menu items; I'm sure they will wow me every time!

I've been here about 10 times. After eating at many different Thai restaurants, this place has always been great. The owner seems like a really good guy, price is good, and the food is good.

I have eaten here about a dozen times. It is the best Thai food in RVA. A great combo of taste and heat. I tried their Thai hot once and it is an inferno. Be careful, but they can spice it any way you like it.

These guys have the best Thai food in Richmond, hands down. The dining room often looks empty, but don't let that fool you, since they do a ton of takeout. The owners/staff are very warm and friendly, food is fantastic, and the prices are very reasonable. I get takeout from here usually once a week and they're very consistent. I really can't say enough good things about Ruang Tong.

Excellent curry. I like the beef with red curry the best. Careful it really is hot even though it has only 1 star next to it. They will make dishes milder if you ask them. Nice decor. Loads of flavor in the dishes. Best thai I have had in RVA area. Beef in curry is often tough and overcooked, not here! Very attentive service...made 4 trips will be coming back regularly.

Very good Thai food. I didn't even know this place existed until I saw a review online. Hidden behind a flower shop. I'll definitely be back. Highly recommend to anyone who likes Thai food!
