Located on historic and trendy West Cary Street in Richmond, the New York Deli has been serving authentic NY fare to four generations of my family. It began with my Grandmother who patronized the Deli when it first opened in Richmond. Next, my Mom who ate there with her friends after grabbing a movie at the Byrd. My parents took me there as a child and I remember the deli cases where the bar is now. From bialy to roll mops to knockwurst and everything in between, it was available at the NY. I ate there while attending VCU and have taken my son there. His reaction? Fantastic. Of course, the stories complement the food. Hands down, the best Reuben sandwich I've ever had. Next time, I'll get the Sailor and think of my Dad. It was always his favorite. Suggestions to management: return to the authentic, ethnic fare and you will shine. Who goes to a NY Deli for a Cobb? Brand it my friends.

It's a hit or miss at NY Deli. I love their fries, wings, & sex on the beach. They have wing specials on Tuesdays for $.35 wings, the sesame soy flavor is my favorite. It's a combination of asian spice sweetness and a bit of tangy bbq. On some nights, they will have a live DJ, games, etc. The service can be slow at times depending on the days.

My Experience with New York Deli was not so good. They have poor customer service and when i tried to speak to a manager to express my concerns, he says " Oh would you like to speak to -----" He actually asked me if i would like to speak to the same guy that i was reporting. AirHeads! smh Also, i would like to add...When one order Runs well over a Hundred dollars, it's polite to thank the person submitting that order. Instead i get rushed off the phone after i say thank you, the gentleman responds with "Alright". My thoughts exactly..."Alright" its the last time we order from NY Deli.

Had a some thing some thing beer, that was pretty good. I ate my normally lunch item-the deli cubano and it was tasty as usual. They normally make home made mustard, it's great but should come with a disclaimer because of all the horse radish. I'm not complaining I love it spivey but was ready when I bit into the sandwich. For some reason though my sandwich today did not come with the mustard, the bartender insisted the bottled Dijon comes with the sand which . Service today though is horrible, I had to get my bar tender to let her know I was ready to order, I had to get another waiter for ketchup and she didn't check on me after the food came. I won't sit in the bar area again if she is back there.

I used to come here all of the time when I wvisited Cary St. I loved the food, but things have changed. I concur with Johnny M's comments about service. I hit it at one in the afternoon on Saturday. There were a few empty seat but server reaction time was really slow. I'll add that I could have also gotten a GOOD pastrami sandwich at the Carnegie deli (granted it tends t be a bit touristy) and been back. Sevice was awful. The order was taken fairly quick. Unfortunately, the server's listening skills were not up to par. My wings (the ginger soy wings , came after I had completed my fight with my pastrami sandwich (more on that in a sec). My wife's salad came as an appetizer. Now for the food. My pastrami and swiss was the fattiest pastrami I have ever experienced. Not only was it fatty, it was tough and had little flavor. The fries that our server raved about were flat out cold. I guess they would have been good with some warmth but I dared not ask for more. I'd probably still be there waiting (I am writing on Sunday afternoon). The portions also were small given the prices. The wings too were cold--amazing since they took so long. In the course of the hour were were there, I saw the server twice. When I had had enough and tried to get my bill, I waited ten minutes before I even SAW her on the floor. I think she too was going to NYC to see what a real deli was like! All in all, I doubt if I will venture in again. I judge restaurants on initial contact with the server (strike one); quality/value associated with the food (strike two); and my ability to leave in a timely fashion (strike 3). It is a shame that this place has become so bad.

Came here one night last minute. It was so crowded, which is fine but the air conditioning wasn't adjusted accordingly an everyone was sweating the entire time. Ordered a sandwich which was out in a timely manner but the pastrami was so fatty you couldn't even bite through it, and my "knockwurst," which is supposed to be more like a sausage, was nothing more than a regular old hot dog. It pretty much ruined my sandwich. Fries were delicious and cooked perfectly! Beer selection abysmal. May go back one day but was not impressed.

Solid sandwich selection, I had the French roast, no complaints. Coffee was good for a deli and the spinach and artichoke dip was fuckin loaded with artichoke hearts, really happy with that. Bill came to $20, a tad pricey but worth the experience.

My friend and I went there couple days ago. I ate half of the burger I ordered and took the other half home. Shortly after I got home I got really sick. I vomited twice, had to go to the bathroom, and got a fever. I'm pretty sure I got food poisoned. After I have vomited out all the burger a few hours later I started to feel better, so I am sure it's the burger and not the norovirus, but still felt dizzy and weak from the fever and could not go to work the next day. My previous experience there were all pretty good, so I've been going there every once a while. However this burger experience horrifies me from going back

I wanted a quick, yummy, hip place to go grab lunch with my regional manager last week, so we made our way to Carytown and ended up here, mostly because that's where we found a parking space! I've been here a few times, the food is always spot-on and well-portioned. They have a huge menu full of reasonably priced food, mainly tasty sandwich creations. I was very impressed with our server this time around. She was extremely professional and friendly, and provided the best service I've had in a while. I had a quesadilla this time which is loaded with beans, mushrooms, peppers, onions and cheese. And you can add chicken to it, like I did. It's one of the best quesadillas I've had anywhere and it comes with a southwest ranch-type sauce for dipping, but that sauce is actually better with their fries! Speaking of their fries, don't pass these up. Their steak fries are battered (i think), so they're crunchy on the outside and then soft on the inside, and they season them with something (i don't know what), maybe montreal steak seasoning?! Just try 'em. My business date had a turkey, apple, and cheddar sandwich on focaccia. She too, loved the fries. Bottom line: Great service, reliably good food, good spot to take others not familiar with RVA.

Gnats! I am serious here they are everywhere.. Sever says they have been trying to get rid of them to no avail. Offered to reduce our tab but we just wanted to get out of the swarm.. One in my jacket when I took it off at home!

I have been to this place at least 5 or 6 times, and after the 2nd time...It was under duress. I wanted to like this place because my friends like going there (not sure why?), but I just cant get past the following things. 1. Their servers/bartenders are rude. And its not a kitsch its NY thing. They are just rude and snooty. 2. They close their kitchen at 11pm. Which I'm not sure, but might be against VA ABC law, They don't even offer a basket of chips or anything. *In one case, i was part of a group that had booked a party at NY Deli. We told them (3 weeks in advance) that we would be bringing in at least 60 people, possibly over a hundred and they refused to keep the kitchen open for us all night. They finally settled on 11:30, but when we arrived, we found that they had closed their kitchen at 11pm as usual. 3. I accidentally left my makeup bag there after my 2nd time, and went back the next day to ask about it. I was told by the rude waitress, who was *wearing my custom eyeshadow* that they had not found it. 4. Their DJ Sucks. This particularly was a Sunday night, and the DJ was playing at a level that a huge nightclub wouldn't even play at. Through crappy home speakers. Talking to people was impossible, and try ordering a drink? You have to scream at least 3 times before the bartender hears you. They even have a patio, which would be a nice escape, but no..they have the music out there too...Just as loud. 5. Speaking of the Patio. it was cold outside. They had those patio warming towers, but they weren't on. They were just shoved in a corner. 6. They had a guy check my ID, fine. it's the law. I'm totally cool with pulling it out. But the guy looked like he was about to knock over a 7-11. He was standing outside, bundled up in a jacket and hat. With nothing identifying him as staff. I walked up to the door and he just said "hey"., My response was "uh, hi?' and tried to open the door. He then snapped at me "UH, CAN I SEE YOUR ID?!" Just rude. In summation, this place is rude, mis-managed and clearly doesn't care about their customers. So I will assume they don't want my money and never return. Is there a rating lower than 1 Star?

During the five day Derecho power outage, we needed some relief in the form of AC and cold beer. I had just read about the late hours of service at NY Deli in Richmond Magazine and often finding myself in need of a late night meal, decided there was no better time to check it out. I like the big bar, the atmosphere, and the large selection of beers. The sandwiches seemed a bit on the pricey side (around $9-$10 each) but they proved to be huge. Fortunately we had decided to share one which worked out well and will probably be how we order here in the future. We tried the Deli Sub - pastrami, corned beef, salami, Swiss and Liptauer cheeses, and coleslaw. The sub was good - fully loaded, hot, and satisfying. Fries were hot and crisp - nothing special but decent enough. I'll definitely be back to check out the late night atmosphere, score a late dinner, and sample more of the menu.

My best friend met her husband here, so we had hoped to come celebrate with her after her wedding. Unfortunately, the bouncer said that they don't appreciate "wedding parties." He was really rude. Took our business elsewhere.

I ate at the NY Deli for the second time last night and it was delicious just like I had remembered! Each time I built my own sandwich and each time I was delighted by what they brought to me. They don't skimp on the meat, and their french fries and onion rings are to die for! Next time I'm in Richmond, I'll definitely be stopping by.

This is the closest bar to my house. When you walk in you're on the bar side--there's a side to the right that is a dining area during the day/evening and turns into a dance floor at night. They have a couple video games toward the bathrooms and an outdoor space (which I haven't seen). The bar is nice--bartenders are pretty friendly. It's a mix of people. Gets a little sloppy late at night (like most places). I've had appetizer-type food a couple times and it was decent. I've also had a sandwich that was good. There aren't a ton of bars in Carytown and this is one that I don't mind going to. It isn't exactly my "scene", but it's a decent bar.

I am a regular at this place. I go a lot and order the same thing each time I go. Because I've gone here a lot, I have noticed a few things--the service has gotten so much better, the fries are THE BEST in Richmond (as stated previously by another reviewer) I don't drink much, but everyone tells me that their happy hour specials are some of the best in Richmond. One thing I do like is the atmosphere. It's a nice place for anything: birthday, date, or just going out to lunch with a friend.

Brunch here is really underwhelming. I went with a few friends. There were 4 of us and we had to wait A WHILE. Like we watched 2 empty 2-tops that could have been pushed together get sat with 2 sets of 2 while we sat hungrily at the bar. The menu is HUGE. Lots of choices. I got a cup of matzo ball soup and a sandwich made with turkey, apple and cheese on wheat bread (the Californian? Can't remember the name). My friends started their meal with the cheese fries, which were pretty good, but the Ranch dressing was disgusting. Watery, flavorless, unappealing. My matzo ball soup was okay, but extremely salty. My sandwich was pretty blah. It was served on wheat bread that was of low, flavorless, crappy quality. Not what you'd expect from a place with "deli" in its name. And, it was like $9. The waitress totally messed up my friends' order and then wasn't all too friendly about fixing it. I came to this place when it really was a deli, and I'm sad to see the quality go so downhill since it re-opened. Nothing here was super bad, but nothing was really good either. With so many fun brunch spots in town, I probably won't head back here for another mediocre meal.

Greasy spoon type places are not my favorite, but NYD is pretty alright. I wouldn't mind coming back here again and again, actually. The server we had was very efficient and very low-key. Every time my water glass was half-full, someone was promptly there to re-fill it. A little nit-picky, but I love that kind of service. I had the Turnpike omelet with English muffin. Places that serve breakfast until 3 pm earn automatic brownie points from me, that's all I'm going to say. I had a really hard time deciding between the lunch menu or the breakfast menu, actually, because everything looked pretty good! When my plate came out, I was actually really disappointed. Visually, the omelet looked so small on the (giant) plate. I thought I got ripped off! But 30 minutes later, I'm struggling to take the last bite. SO GOOD. And the muffin was toasted to perfection.

Two words: Power. Hour. From 10-11 (at least on Thursdays), NYD offers cans of PBR for 50 cents, a deal which definitely appeals to my broke college student sensibility. Boyfriend and I found upon this deal about two weeks ago when we tried to go to Secco for a celebratory glass of wine, but decided on NYD so we wouldn't have to wait. Awesome Things: Power Hour. $4 sparkling white wine--really. The Cuban sandwich--SO much better than whatever sandwich I had last time and I really enjoyed it. French fries--still delicious, probably the best I've had in Richmond. Not So Awesome Things: Slowish service--the place was relatively empty when we first arrived. Price--my normal sandwich was almost $10, eesh. LOUD--SO LOUD. I HAD TO PRACTICALLY SHOUT TO HEAR THE BOYFRIEND. I FELT LIKE A SENIOR CITIZEN. I'll definitely come back for another Cuban, though I'll bring earplugs if I want to do the power hour.

NY Deli is a friend's favorite, and it has become tradition for several us to gather there after running the Monument Avenue 10k. Today was no exception, but I never go otherwise. They were slammed as they usually are on a Saturday afternoon, but we did get seated pretty quickly. Service was friendly. My country omelet wasn't that great. The tomato soup was amazing, however.

NYD has decent food, but it's not really anything to write home about. My boyfriend and I came here for brunch and weren't that impressed. I got the eggs benedict with lox and in my opinion, the eggs benedict at Baker's Crust down the street is much better. My boyfriend ordered a vegetarian sandwich which was average. The thing we both enjoyed most wasn't the food - but the antique photo booth they have behind the bar! It produces really authentic, antique photos - not your common cheap, Wal-Mart quality strips of photos that you get nowadays. It was $3, which is a little pricier than the norm, but it's our favorite strip of photos thus far that we've taken from a photo booth! I'll probably be dragging him back sometime again just to snap some more :P

Terrific fries! They give you a lot and I (unfortunately) ate them all! The sandwich was pretty meh, but it certainly wasn't bad. The meat is like lunch meat, so this will never be a great deli where its cut to order... but its not bad.

Went here for the second time but on a weekday and there were very few people dining.. Maybe 12 max. Ordered the Cobb salad and what was brought to me was a pile of lettuce with a huge blob of brown guacamole and salsa that tasted like beer. So, definitely not fresh at all. Paid extra for grilled chicken and I had to remove several bites from my mouth bc it was so charred that it was very bitter. The fries were good that were on my boyfriend's plate, however, he had to pay $3 extra for the fries with his sandwich and it was a very small portion. Service was slow but our waitress always rushed to the table apologizing for having been gone so long yet there wasn't really any reason for her to have been working all that hard since there weren't very many customers. I'm only giving 3 stars bc this place is really fun at night as a bar but would definitely not waste any money eating here again.

I met friends for Happy Hour and I guess it all starts with the filthy ( and I mean FILTHY) hair of the bar back. We couldn't take our eyes off of it. This guy is handling my glassware. I mean, I get the whole " I hate the world and I don't need to groom" thing, but seriously, this is a freekcking restaurant dude and you are BEHIND THE BAR!!! My next rant would be about the Nachos. You know what? If you can't be bothered to melt the cheese on your Nachos ( which sucked anyway) you REALLY shouldn't be in business. There are far better choices in Richmond. These people are phoning it in. You might have a zillion different beers and that might be enought to stay in business but the rest is fair to middling. That is all.

Great fries. Service is alright. The price is sweet so I guess you get what you pay for. Tomato soup sucked. Their 3-cheese (cheddar, swiss, fetta) grilled cheese and tomato sandwich was awesome the first time, but 2nd time around it was eh. I'd still say give it a try. I like sitting near the big open window.

I've only bothered with New York Deli a few times. I never really understood why it got so popular, I find it pretty mediocre. But I think hosting the Carytown NYE party and having a photo booth are all it really took for the the scenesters to flock to the place... for a while. I don't know if they're still just as popular. I never go there anymore. I had a night or two of decent drinking and socializing here once upon a time, but the company I had made it worth the time. Last week I was shopping next door at Bygones and I was hungry. On that block, there were a few decent choices, but I didn't want to spend much, and I knew the prices were reasonable-ish there. So I stopped in for a sandwich. I got the club with fries, super standard. Didn't feel like being adventurous, this was about sating myself and getting out. I was, actually, pleasantly surprised by the fries, though. It's a clever seasoning, I think you may even be able to spot the fennel seeds in the picture. Club on wheat, hard to screw that up. I don't do mayo, I do mustard... and after indicating a preference for spicy mustard over yellow mustard, I was pointed to the bottle on the table. Only one problem, though... I don't want to dismantle the sandwich when it gets to the table. And a club is already a pain in the ass because it's prone to falling apart without the toothpicks, which I would have to remove and replace, I guess. I just ate it dry. Was it so hard for you to just ask the cook to put it on back there? I guess so. It was apparently inconvenient to check on me or refill my glass, too, even though it was far from busy. I may have gotten one refill, but I remember a lot more wishing for a refill than receiving one.

Have only been here a couple of times but I can already tell that this is going to become a regular player in our weekend "where do you want to go?" dance. First visit was on a Friday afternoon for a little Happy Houring. They have Crispin cider on tap - a huge plus for me (and probably anyone else who is trying to be gluten free or just enjoys really good cider) - good beer selection and a full bar. And the bar is super nice, classy and casual, with great service. I liked it so much that when FB and I were in Carytown the next day for to pick up some birthday presents I suggested an early dinner/late lunch. They were (almost) completely packed at 3pm on a Saturday, what seemed like it should have been off hours - a testament to the quality, I'm sure. We both got salads that were super fresh and flavorful. I can't wait to go back and try more!

Normally this place is ok but never tried place @ night. Service kinda slow tonight...ordered food @ 6:20... 6:45 I still have not received my salad ahead of meal... may not come back on a Monday night... just seems like they're understaffed but then again there was only 2 other tables n here when we walked in so it could also be inefficient servers. I thought it took a while for them to take our order and as I look around I c tables who've been sitting 4 15+ minutes who're still holding menus. It's now 6:55 still no starter salad but a glimmer of hope from the server who must've sensed I was blogging about the experience as he mentioned our food would be here shortly as he dashed by. Well; no starter salad it appears; my Gen Tao's has arrived though... unfortunately am still waiting on my 6 year olds dish... ahhh... there's my starter salad ... coming out 5 minutes after my main dish.

Whenever I go in this place I always think about when I worked at the original New York Deli, fluorescent-lights, deli cases, decor from 1975, and wall-to-wall with old people ordering poached eggs, bagels and lox., and the whitefish platter. It is quite amazing how it has been transformed into a trendy Carytown bar and restaurant. This review is based on two separate visits in the past four months. Both times we went in at "off" times, had no wait for a table, and had attentive service. One waitress we had was so genuinely friendly it is worth a mention. On that visit I only had the French-onion soup that was close to perfect. My boyfriend always gets the reuben, and loves it. We both smoke, and love the back patio. The one thing that stuck out in my mind was that I hated the small, stemmed wine glass-it seemed old-fashioned.The wine in it wasn't so great either , especially for the price, but that's something that could be changed easily. Our most recent visit we sat in the window, which was fun. We were starving, and ordered the nachos,.They were tasty with what seemed like house-made chips, cheese, jalapenos, and sour cream and fresh salsa on the side. With no meat, they were a lighter appetizer and we devoured them, but wished the salsa was better-it didn't have a lot of flavor or heat. I ordered the New York strip, opting out of the potatoes and got the sauteed house vegetables and a house salad. Everything was really good, the salad was fresh, a good size, the vinaigrette seemed house-made and was seasoned well. The vegetables were well seasoned, as was the steak. My steak temperature was correct-medium rare-sounds simple but cooks get it wrong. My big problem which was probably an oversight was that my steak had a bone in, where a New York Strip does not. I didn't mention it to the server because it was tasty, and I was starving, but that is something that should have been mentioned if they substituted another cut. She didn't say anything, and perhaps this was some sort of New York strip t-bone??? That would make it a t-bone, which is basically the strip with the bone. Anyway, it was good. My boyfriend got some spaghetti dish that he deemed "ok'. He was jealous of my plate. We will definitely return, we want to take pictures in that photo booth.

Came here while waiting for a movie at the Byrd. The food was fairly average between three in our party. Nothing awful, nothing great. Was pretty disapppointed in the nachos - not enough ingredients and the chips were ...different. The happy hour drink specials were pretty good. There was a decent crowd. It is close to the Byrd.

NYD gets a solid A-OK in my book. Is the food my favorite? No. Is it my scene late at night? Probably not. But it has a few very solid things going for it. 1. Photo booth. This old school photo booth has provided me with many a humorous photo strip during visits. Once, during a particularly bad day, this photo booth was the only thing that made me smile. So thank you, New York Deli photo booth, for giving me some much needed entertainment. 2. The large bar is a great place to post up with a laptop during the day. Free wi-fi? Check! Wide enough to fit both a plate and your PC? Check! Friendly bartenders? Check! 3. I've always experienced solid service at New York Deli, whether chillin' at the bar or seated at a table. It's one of those places where I just always feel welcome, regardless of the time of day. (although at night, you should be prepared for a wait and for some noise) 4. Take-out's usually pretty quick. I haven't ordered take-out here in a while, but back when I worked in Carytown I often placed to-go orders. Fast and easy! 5. Bagel with lox and cream cheese. Oh, one of my guilty pleasures. I light up when I see this on a menu, and I love that NYD offers up my fave. If I'm heading to New York Deli, it's probably for a casual daytime chow sesh (perhaps with my bagel and lox) or a nighttime photo op (complete with thirst-quenching cocktails). However, I also think I'm gonna have to investigate Claire Y's power hour experience... that sounds quite tempting.

Watery gin & tonic. Indifferent bartender who, when asked to hit it with some more gin to make it a G&T instead of T& water, added maybe 0.5 cc. Sandwiches are good.

Average food and value. It gets a good crowd because it has a charming decor and a great location. People feel safe taking their out-of-town friends here. Mistake. It's not a deli and Yankees will scoff at anything they're served. You want a decent deli, head to Chiocca's. Once it turns into a bar scene, it's okay. They have a impronto dance floor and a "DJ" who plays his iTunes playlist.

Pretty terrible service followed by pretty terrible food puts this place on my list of will not returns. Long story short the fryer oil was clearly dirty, the fries were over seasoned and mostly inedible, the BBQ Sauce tasted horrible, the ranch was just some sort of creamy white substance, and water doesn't get refilled... ever. This place sucks.

2nd time there. 1st was really good but was at least a year ago, probably longer. Went on a Saturday at about 5:30. Not too busy yet. The waiter took his time getting our drink order. They were out of Devil's Backbone Vienna Lager (on a Saturday?). Kids menu had 4 items on it so that wasn't all that great. We got the nachos and I had The Farmer, a burger with a fried egg on top. It was greasy and didn't have much flavor at all. Nachos were sparse with the toppings except for the rubbery cheese. I had to ask for a glass of water 3 times. Ordered one with my beer order. Again when we got the nachos and again when the burger arrived. The place was devoid of hipsters except for 2 of the waitresses.

French Fries. the best. ever. Came here with my sis over the holidays on a friday for lunch and the place was packed. Sat at the bar and snacked on the hummus plate for starters and the French Onion soup. Really dig the atmosphere, neat collection of old flasks and martini shakers adorn the bar. Place to see and be seen. I always thought Cary town was too touristy - but NY deli shines like a gem in all the hub bub. I'm coming back for those fries.

If you don't like noise, your best choice is to sit at the bar. If your significant other wants to shop, hang out here and wait. The Sailor is excellent if you are REALLY hungry and are a meat-eater. Potato salad is very yankee; avoid it if you are from the South.

Love this place, they make a great meal and they DO NOT charge extra for egg whites like the Village started doing! WE NO LONGER GO TO THE VILLAGE, I mean how do you charge extra when I am getting less food? HUM....but we love NY they ROCK!! We want to healthy, don't punish us for asking for good food!

Great sandwiches. Fun atmosphere. Large beer selection. It got pretty busy the night that we were there and so, as you might expect, service slowed somewhat, but they certainly were friendly. The fries were really good and I like the fact that the tables are marble topped, not crappy laminate.

I go to New York Deli mainly to drink. Food is okay, seems like it all comes off the Sysco truck. They also have a fairly decent patio.

I have to agree with whoever said that they have the best french fries. I love them, both sober and drunk! I had a burger and while it wasn't anything spectacular, it was good and the french fries and the sauce selection is fantastic!

I went for lunch on a weekend during off-peak hours and I didn't have a great service experience, either. It seemed like our table was a major inconvenience to our server even though we didn't make any outlandish requests. On the upside, my burger was tasty, and so were the chips. A word of warning though: the cole slaw is really awful. I couldn't bear a repeated taste test to try and figure out what on earth was making it smell like ethyl alcohol. Luckily, our waitress was willing to bring out a different side for my friend. Alright, I had to edit this review because I've been back since for drinking and late night bar food, and I've had decent experiences. If you don't want to stand, be sure to get there before 9:30pm to grab a seat at the bar, and become pals with the bartender (who I've all found to be chill and friendly). The DJ cranks up after 10:30 (?) and the crowd is pretty variable, good people watching. The security guy reminds me of Kip from Napoleon Dynamite, and sometimes wears a jaunty hat, so who can argue with that?

I celebrated my 21st birthday at New York Deli, so we have quite a past. I can't say it's always my first choice when I want to go out to the bar but if I ever end up at NYD, I know I'll have a good time. They have a large back patio for smoking and a fairly large floor for dancing. I wouldn't recommend drinking draft beer there, I don't know how often they clean their lines, it always give me a headache. And always try to take a picture in the photobooth! Hopefully their ink won't be messed up. But enough about NYD as a bar, it's an old trustie. Let's talk about NYD as a brunch spot. It's rare that I go west of the Blvd but a large party and a wait at Bamboo steered us that direction! I was surprised yet enthused to see that NYD was also in a wait. We were starving and had the option to sit at the bar. The bartenders were friendly and promptly took our order. I asked to started with the Liptauer, which is NYD's special cream cheese blend with toasted rye points. And I chose the Deli Benedict as my entree, which was eggs benedict with salmon. I forgot my ID which I was bummed about because our bartender suggested adding Pinnacle Whipped Cream vodka to coffee, YUMMMM. I'll have to try that the next time. I never got my Liptauer and after our food was delivered by a food runner, nobody ever came back to check on us until our plates were almost empty. Although, my plate wasn't anywhere near empty because the salmon was way too overdone and the Hollandaise sauce completely overwhelmed the dish. Our server finally checked on us and I ordered a coffee that was being brewed. Before I knew it, she was handing out our checks and while I wanted to mention that I never got my Liptauer, she didn't come back soon enough for me to tell her. I had been waiting for my coffee, but it looked as though that also fell through the cracks. I decided to pay my tab and get coffee elsewhere. Oh well. I'm glad that I gave NYD's brunch a chance but I'll probably stick to drinking there. They've got a few kinks to work out before I start recommending that people check them out on Sundays.

New York Deli has Trivia Night / $0.35 Wing Night every Tuesday. My friends and I have made it a weekly ladies night out until last night, when our service was horrible, the food was burnt and we were just plain ignored. Finally, the waitress, Analisse (?), came to our table and said that we don't tip well enough and she'd talked to the owner and the manager who all agreed and said if we don't tip better, they wouldn't serve us. Of course, we were taken aback, for her to have the nerve to tell us that. But to make a scene with the ONLY black table in the whole restaurant had underlying tones to it. Tips are not required they are earned. This woman is a bad waitress any way, always has an attitude and expects to be tipped well past her service? She pockets change, ignores customers, answers with attitude and has the pure gull to do that? She also asked the gentleman who sat next to us was the $3 tip all he wanted to leave her. Now, to my calculations if we buy 6 wings (the minimum you can order) at $0.35 that's only $2.10 and a 20% tip of that is only $0.42. Now a 20% tip is a nice tip but I leave no less than $2. Once the "manager" was brought over she co-signed but we later found out that the "manager" was only a bartender and the actual manager had left for the night. We don't know how to take this, aggressive, ignorant waitress or racial profiling? Maybe a mix a both?

My friends and I come here occasionally for some beers or a good sandwich. Good reuben and the deli sandwich is rich because of the liptauer cheese spread and crunchy with cole slaw. The fries are probably some my favorites in the city. Good selection of microbrews on tap that seems to rotate every week or two.

best french fries in town hands down, and one of the bartenders, kat, is absolutely awesome. i've been here a bunch of times, for dance parties, dinners, lunch, pretty much everything and always have a really good time. there's a photobooth, which is a cool touch. they have a bunch of vegan and vegetarian options, which is great for me as a vegan, but i've had them mess things up a couple of times. ordered spaghetti once without cheese, and it still came with shredded romano on top, albeit minus the baked cheese. the GRTC sandwich and hummus wrap here are my favorite choices, and the booze is pretty reasonably priced, if i recall. right now they have this stuff on tap called leininkugel (or something to that effect) which i highly recommend everyone try. definitely a good lunch stop if you're spending a day in carytown.

For a Deli...or what people who have nothing better to do call delicatessen this place is average. The inside decor is boring, the food is boring, and most of the sandwiches were actually so incredibly bland that I asked for 3 other sauces to add to my sandwich to make it bearable. So you might be thinking "But why the 3 stars Dave? It sounds like you hate the place!" Yes...some part of me does hate this place but oddly enough I've ended up eating here more than 10 times...why? Who knows, it's just one of those places where I just seem to keep coming back too. Thats why I gave this place 3 stars...enjoy maybe you'll be confused and lost here just as much as I am.

Wow people give 'em a break! I've eaten here a few times and never had a problem with the service... and the food is pretty tasty too. We were in a couple weeks ago for a quick lunch/beer. We walked by a ton of people waiting for a table and sat down immediately at the bar. Service was super quick. This place gets pretty crowded at night... but it's usually a good time. The music is usually good and everyone gets down.

honestly, i normally have a good time at new york deli. tonight, i got two star service. i arrived a little late to the table, at maybe 7:45 pm. after 15 minutes the waitress came around to ask for my drink order, and after another ten i ordered food. my drink came out fine, but at 9:00 when the waitress came to ask me if i wanted a third drink, i asked if my food was coming out anytime soon. i ordered 8 wings and at that point i'd been waiting for almost an hour. the waitress told me that something had happened with the printer and all the food orders had printed at the same time. ok, that's fine, i'm really a very patient customer and i don't tend to complain. a couple minutes later, my wings came out...and they were cold. not room temperature, freezing cold. so at this point i have to assume that these wings had been in the fridge for who knows how long, i didn't really want to eat them cold, but i was hungry so I ate a few and asked for a box to take the rest home (so i could heat them up.) about an hour later, we asked for the check. i had dinner with my wife and a friend, we paid with a card (leaving over a 20% tip, despite slow service, because i do understand it was busy and sometimes the kitchen can be slow) and he paid with cash. after he paid his check with close to exact change, the waitress came back and asked if anything was wrong with the service. she asked him if his intention was to leave her an 85 cent tip, and we had to explain that because he was paying in cash he was leaving her tip after paying off the bill. i have never been to a restaurant where the waitress questioned the amount of tip left. i hate to call out the waitress, because she was very nice the times she did interact with us, after the slow service and cold food i don't think it was appropriate to ask a customer about the amount of the tip.

Pretty decent food. Good sandwiches, but I once thought it would be a good idea to order their General Tso's chicken...yeah, I don't know what I was thinking. It was not very good. However, the sandwiches are pretty decent.

came here around 5 on a saturday night with my boyfriend and we had no problem getting a table. our service was great. we ordered spinach dip to start and it was good, but not great. i ordered a house salad with egg & cheese for my meal & it was huge, fresh, & delicious. i would definitely order it again. my boyfriend ordered a steak & cheese sub with fries....good, but nothing special he said. we'd go back one day, but definitely not in a rush....think i'll head to coppolla's next time i'm in carytown and want a sandwich!

I can sum up this place by saying it gets the job well done. I eat here a lot, because the food is cheap, but also good. This is not fine dining, creative cuisine. The menu is kind of like if you polled 25 people and asked what their favorite food was, then put them on a menu. It has sandwiches, wraps, burritos, pasta, burgers, salads, I think even a stiry-fry....something for everyone. Seriously, when you have a group of people and everyone has different ideas about what to eat, just go to new york deli. The bar scene is pretty good too, it's usually not as crowded as some other places which I like. There is also a photobooth that's only 3 dollars. If it doesn't have an out of order sign on it, take advantage. I would give it 5 stars for its value to food tastiness ratio, but occasionally there are little flaws, like slow service, something missing, etc. But nothing major. Oh, last time I went I got a french cab (forgot the name) that was only 12 bucks cause it was leftover from the french film fest. 12 dollars for a bottle of wine! hell yes!

I've never had a problem with the service. The food is good- not great- with lots of veggie options. I like the hummus plate or the black bean burger with sauerkrat. Yep, that's right. The iced coffee is damn good and big. At night, it gets a bit popped collar/khaki pants with some cool kids mixed in. The dance floor ranges from fun to carnage depending on the crowd and their dancing ability. The best part is the $3 black and white photo booth. Love it.

New York Deli ruined The Reuben for me. New York Deli is why I am still on the search for a decent Ruben after 7 years of living in San Francisco. There is something about that sandwich no other place I have been to can ever touch. The only tangibly identifiable difference is that they spread a little tomato paste on your rye and the Russian (yes, Russian) dressing comes on the side. Truthfully I have had better Pastrami but the combo haunts my memory. To all the pretenders out there, ditch the Thousand Island and go true school. There Sailor is another classic. If you're a regular they treat you like family.

This is the ONLY TRUE Trivia spot in Central Virginia . The food is fantastic, the desserts are to DIE for, and the hostesses are always very polita and cordial. It IS WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE, so it's tops in MY book.

This is not your father's or your grandfather's NY Deli. Gone are the days of the deli meats as you walk into the place. It's now strictly a bar, grill, and techno music on the weekends. The food is pretty good, though. The bar is one of the nicer ones in Carytown, in my opinion. We were there on a Saturday night a few weeks ago, and they had a DJ playing music with a bunch of people sitting around. Oh, they had a patio out back with a bunch of people sitting around.

They have the best fries in Richmond. AMAZING. This reason alone keeps me coming back, but in addition it's a great location and a cool atmosphere. Dinner at New York Deli and a movie at the Byrd sounds like a great date night to me!

Great sandwich place, in a neat old building. Service was good, sweet tea is very good, and the fries were awesome. Portion sizes are large. Recommend as a good place for a casual meal.

This place used to be one of Richmond's best deli's. Not so much anymore. It's a great bar now. Beer selection is always interesting and affordable, cocktails and highballs are strong and cheap. Mug Night can't be beat if all you want is a giant beer. Still, the food has gone from great, to OK, to "why bother". Sometimes I get their fries when I'm there drinking, but I get the impression that this is a lot of Cisco, frozen and reheated kind of food. Now, that is some people's jam and I don't propose you avoid it because of that. Still, table service is touch and go and depends entirely on your server. If the place looks packed, expect it to be a long and tedious dining experience. If just 2 or 3 tables are occupied, you're set. Brunch there is pretty good. I think the one menu item I really enjoy is their Chicken Fried Steak, which is only served for brunch or breakfast (mon-fri open until 11am).

This was my go-to place when I lived in Richmond, Va. I was a student at the time and it perfectly satisfied all our needs. Food, drinks, photobooth and great music on the weekends. Brunches here are fairly decent and there's never really too much of a wait. However, I would definitely come here more for the drinks than the food. But the New York Deli is always a good time and the crowd it attracts is always interesting.

I went here for drinks friday night and got hammer-faced. I'm not really sure how my tab ended up being $50 because I only drank beer and several people bought me shots but then I looked at my receipt and realized I had been ordering shots of tequila for myself...hmmm. Either way, on Friday nights this place is great for dancing. We did meet some D-bags on the outdoor patio who questioned me being from Richmond and if I knew the place and he messed with the wrong queer...err I mean guy.

First of all, THE BEST french fries in Richmond. This is my default happy hour spot. $2 rails, $2 PBR bottles, and $2 off drafts. Need I say more? Atmosphere is fine- laid back and plenty of space. When it's nice out there's a patio in the back. Great sandwiches- I usually get the Deli Cubano.

I'm a pretty frequent customer, but mainly for the dirty martinis made the way I like them. I enjoy the fries with the Chipotle mayo and that's about it. The food isn't anything exciting. The creamy tomato is overly salty and most hot sandwiches are overly toasted. I've received burnt bread more than twice. The grilled cheese has a nice mix of cheese but it tends to be dry. The weekend DJs are forever changing so music can vary. There isn't any room to dance but people make space. In conclusion, I go there for the dirty martinis, fries and I like the color of their walls.

The food was phenomenal! The french fries are to die for! I had the Holly sub (hot) which had roasted turkey, roast beef, cheddar, pickles, LTO. The portion was huge and I could barely finish the sub. Great food, fun atmosphere, and even a vintage photo booth that will take four black and white photos for $3. The pictures came out dark and a little distorted but it looked pretty neat. I'll totally be back! They're also open until 2am every night with a full bar.

So time after time I try to give this place a shot. Maybe its the snotty service, or the sandwiches that take so long to come out. Let me just share my experience with you from this saturday. After leaving the Byrd theatre on 11/5/11 for a wedding we had an hour to kill before heading to the reception. Ok, lets go grab a drink and catch up (old friends). We head into the Deli, there was a smiling bartender who was about to take our drink order. Mind you there were no seats, however on the side by the front door there is plenty of space to stand and talk. The hostess comes over and says "Can I get you a table". We said, "No Thanks, we will stand". The next thing that comes out of her mouth was "well this is getting excessive, If you can't have a table, im gonna get management". Woah wait, what?!? Oh wait maybe it was the suits we had on and you thought we were a bunch of assholes, oh ok.. I looked at the bartender and she was confused at what was going on (still smiling). I promptly told the hostess we would be taking our business elsewhere. She stormed off, as we were outside she poked her out of the door and said two people got up and we could take their seats at the bar if we wanted. I just laughed at her. Ya know, i've never in my life been chased out of a bar by a hostess. I will never go back to New York deli, even if my friend Meghan puts on DJ's and live music there.. That experience killed it.

I went back to New York Deli late night with some friends (I had vowed never to return). Anyways, the place wasn't that crowded for a bar so you could have a table which was nice. The drinks were strong and well priced. The big downer was the food. We got the hummus appetizer and let me tell you, that is not what hummus should taste like. Their hummus tastes more like it was made out of white beans than chick peas. I mean it was tasty, but please don't call is hummus. Service was again slow, but not as bad as last time. Basically, its an alright place to go to drink, but not to eat.

Out for dinner on a Saturday night, a friend and I decided to romp through Carytown. We stopped at NY Deli for some grub, and honestly were surprised. I was expecting greasy bar fare, but ended up with a great Ruben, my friend built her own sandwich, and our waitress was prompt and attentive. Several drinks and a few conversations later, we made our way to the photo booth for some memory making...and then, the DJ started. it was an unfortunate combination of really loud dubstep and hip-hop, awkward and obnoxious people on the "dance floor" and service becoming nonexistent..we couldn't find our waitress and the bar wasn't even busy!! I would definitely return for a meal, but will leave before the music starts.

Superb food! Everything I've gotten here has been delicious. It's a great deli for some sammies and a hang out with friends. Though the wait is long sometimes, the food it totally worth it! The Byrd is right next door so I will often times grab something from here and then go watch a film! I would recommend giving yourself at least an hour since the kitchen is sometimes slow. They have the best fries I've ever had so I would definitely recommend!

I had such a wonderful experience here that I had to simply do another review to update from the last time I was here. Date nights tend to have us wandering some part of Carytown once and awhile for a bite to eat and a nice stroll for the evening. And the last stroll took us all the way to NY Deli. And, this time, I was happy it did. Last time I had been here was for RVA Burger Week - and all though it was a place of note, I could not partake on the burger since it did not adhere to my food restrictions. Sitting down by the window for people watching, we sat down to place our order. This time i decided to build my own version of one of my favorite sandwiches- the Deli Club! I told the waitress I had a gluten allergy and I had asked if it was possible to switch out the bread for lettuce wrapped (with a side salad). She said "of course - not a problem". I was ecstatic to be able to eat without having to have another dinner of just a oversized salad. My other half ordered the french dip. When our sandwiches arrived. I was in heaven. My club was two lettuce wrapped monstrosities with an overabundance of flavor. It was ideal. With an amazing side chef salad with one of the best raspberry vinaigrette I have had here, It was a perfect night. Between the fresh ingredients to the flexibility with food restrictions, NY Deli is one place I feel comfortable enough to take my fellow Celiac friends for a nice meal out. My other half noted that even though he does not typically tend to eat towards the gluten-free diet, he said it was filling enough for him. So, if you are looking for a healthy alternative, this one still boasts tons of sandwich filling - sans the bread. So, if you want a taste of NYC without the full day's drive to the big apple for a taste of true authentic sammies, give NY Deli a try (and maybe hop on over to the Byrd for an after dinner movie). Bonus Points: (when and if it works) they have an old photobooth so come prepared with $3 cash to take a momento home with you!

This place is awesome! The fries are so delicious, as are the sandwiches (create your own; it's fun!). Beer selections are great and staff is very knowledgeable. Every Tuesday night they have trivia, which is fun! I do get a little annoyed with some of the type of people that come here because they can be a bit rowdy, and trivia team names are sometimes quite sexist, in my opinion, but I guess that's just what's fun to those types. Overall, great place!

I have been a couple of times. The first time I was impressed with the food and service. I went again today (2 months later). The service was quite slow and I was unhappy to see that they have changed the menu. Before each sandwich came with a side. Now you just get the sandwich for the same price and have to pay an extra $3-4 for a side. As a result it makes it a little pricey for everday lunch. I don't think I will be back unless they reconsider their pricing.

Stopped in here on the way back to Norfolk After viewing the murals. The turkey Ruben was good and they have a good selection of alcohol. The price was a bit high for it but I did get a can of soda so perhaps was standard. The bartender was very friendly and easy to talk to.

Ate here this past weekend while visiting a friend for her graduation. Got to Richmond Friday around 9 or 10 pm and was starving. My friend works here and she recommended we try the food. I was expecting an actual deli type place where you order meals and meat specialties over the counter.. well I was wrong. Started in 1929, New York Deli is one of the oldest buildings in Richmond. From my understanding it opened up as a deli, now under new management they refined it into a bar/restaurant but kept the name. You walk in and there is a bar to the left, to the right are tables all with a retro look. Again, it was pretty late when we got there so the kitchen was closing up soon. We were greeted, seated, and served quickly.... probably because our friend works there. I ordered the Chicken Sandwich with asparagus and the girlfriend ordered the Reuben. The chicken sandwich was pretty simple but tasted great. The asparagus was simple but good. Overall pretty easy going meal. What I should have gotten was the Reuben with fries. Man was I jealous about my girlfriends meal. Perfect balance between the meat and sauerkraut and also very tasty. The fries were bomb! Beer battered and super crunchy. Definitely recommend The Reuben to any first comers. Overall New York Deli was a good first visit. Still plenty of options to choose from so I will update you guys once I visit again. Oh and they become a night club with a pretty sick DJ.. if you're into that.

Had the reuben and fries. Sat at the bar, service was good. Good atmosphere, nothing to knock this place on. Good food, decent beer selection. Fries alone will fill you up! Prices are great for all the food they pile on. Sunday afternoon is a great time to visit them, not too busy.

This was our second time trying out NY Deli. As a NYC girl, I had high hopes, but have been left disappointed each time. Both times I have had the buffalo chicken wrap. The first time, the wrap barely had any sauce -- I actually had to ask for a side of buffalo sauce just to get some flavor. The second time, it was DROWNING in buffalo sauce. I love buffalo chicken and all, but it was seriously almost too much to handle. I got the side of veggies with my wrap, and they were good, but just completely doused in butter/oil. It seriously would be healthier just to go with the french fries. I will say that the ambiance overall is cute and relaxed and the service is good/personable, but the food doesn't make up for it. There are better places to check out in Carytown.

Came looking forward to lox and bagels on the Fourth. No lox. Bagel tasted like a bun, bready, not like a bagel. And "West Creek" cream cheese. Whatever that is, it tastes nothing like "Philadelphia" cream cheese. Nice staff, slow service. No lox.

I really don't get NY Deli. Is it a restaurant? Is it a bar? It certainly isn't a deli. I came here on Friday night with an admittedly largish group--keep this in mind--and was absolutely baffled by the quality of food and service versus the hype. First, let me say: if you're running a bar and your rail tequila is Aristocrat, you're doing something wrong. If ALL of your rail spirits are Aristocrat, you... well, you probably need a doctor. You can do much, much better. What's more concerning is a $7 shot of 1800. I've seen cheaper prices on better tequila all over the city. Instead of indulging in my liquor of choice, I bought two beers. Usually the safe bet. They give you a sizeable tap pour of their craft beers for $6ish, and while the milk stout was an excellent choice, the second beer had a really funky aftertaste and could probably be replaced with a better beer. (I don't recall which beer this was, please forgive my transgression, Yelpers.) Overall a pretty mediocre drinking experience. What's more, I came for happy hour on a Friday and my server forgot to ring up my drinks for the happy hour price. On to the food: yes, the fries are good. They're beer-battered; we all know how great beer-battered fries are. But I couldn't help thinking the entire time that I could be spending the same on a much larger order of the exact same thing down in the fan at the Village--where there's an infinitely better, cheaper, beer selection--and rail shots don't make me hate myself in the morning. I also got an order of sesame ginger wings. Acceptably priced and the sauce was decent, but the wings weren't cooked well enough and the meat come off the bone as a slimey, flavorless mess. The service was also inexplicably mediocre. Apparently the hostess, who helps deliver food, can't otherwise help you, even with a large party. It took far too long to get drinks at five on a Friday, when there was only one other table in the restaurant. I definitely won't be spending money here again. P.S. NY Deli, please sharpen your knives. I watched a bar back struggle to cut limes for 20 minutes. Do you want your employee to stab themselves? Because that's how you wind up with workers comp lawsuits.

I have been going to the NY Delli since I was a little kid, and I am 69 years old. The story goes that a sailor came in and asked them to make him a sandwich; he told them what to put on it, and the "Sailor Sandwich" was invented.

During the day, get a sandwich here. I can't explain how good they are. Like, you might have to give up eating sandwiches anywhere else. They're that good. Well, yeah, mostly. At night, come here to get drunk. Really drunk. Around other twenty-somethings. On Monday nights, it's even cheaper to get really drunk with a great deal on 32-oz mugs of beer. Beer that you will drink. Beer that will get you drunk. Sometimes this place is so full of drunken college students, you can barely move without getting bumped up against by another drunk person. Take an Uber ride home. Get fries with cheese and bacon. Yes, BACON. Just eat them because beer and BACON.

Oh RVA how you never fail to surprise me. I went to NYD for the first time this past Friday; simply on a whim. When we arrived the place was pretty empty, which is fine with me - the less sweating the better... our id's were promptly checked, and we were off to hit the bar. Both drinks were made very well, moderately priced and the bartender who btw had no qualms about making the specialty drink I requested (virtual high-five to her) was very friendly and fast! We did not eat anything so I can't rave [yet] about the awesome fries (TBC...), but I can comment on the atmosphere which was nice even after the place began to get a bit packed. The DJ [Ghost] seriously is by far the best DJ I have heard in Richmond...very pleasantly surprised! All and all we had a very chill nice adult time, no craziness, which I can appreciate on a Friday night. We will definitely return, and bring a friend or 6.

I think in the time it took to get my food I could have gone online, purchases a megabus ticket, gone to New York City, ate a bagel, strolled through Central Park on a horse drawn carriage, and finished the New York City Marathon... The restaurant wasn't even that busy--noon on a Saturday. An entire group of sorority girls tired from a night of whoo whooing finished their entire meal, refunded in the bathroom and paid before I even got my ice tea refilled. The food when it finally did come was actually pretty good, the pastrami was one of the best I've had, but at that point Wolfgang Puck, couldn't make up for the poor service.

The first time I went to New York Deli was on Thursday night for karaoke that my best friend suggested we attend. The bartender, D specifically, provided great service and conversation. I love the retro look of the restaurant and the karaoke stage is on point. I had a summer breeze which is their current summer special that is highly refreshing. Not too sweet, and not too tangy. I know everyone talks about the fries here and for a good reason- honestly the best cheese fries in Richmond. They use actual melted shredded cheese for a richer taste instead of processed nacho fries that you'd find from a diner or fast food joint. I have definitely become a regular here and I highly recommend anyone to check it out day or night. New York Deli has something to offer for everyone!

This is One of the oldest restaurants in Richmond I heard. The bar is huge, with some interesting liquor choices. I Came with some friends from out of town and everyone had a great time hanging out at the bar.. Plus they had Hopslam on tap. The Food: I got their Cubano, it was tastey and the steak fries were awsome. My buddy got the Reuben and he said it was great. My brother got the Pastrami Swiss and potato salad, which he seemed to like. They take classic deli sandwiches and kick them up a notch of quality. Returned for brunch and the place was packed. Chicken and waffles is one of he best I've had. Perfect place to hang out with buddies and spend an afternoon. Solid craft beer selection, great atmosphere and great food. Sounds like a winner to me!

This establishment is racist towards black people and unapologetic towards that fact. Don't support this business.

Great food usually, but the service is horrible. Tonight we were looking forward to the meal, but we waited 10 minutes for menus, 20 minutes for drinks, and then sat there for the next 10 minutes while the waitress still not taken our order. This was on a Sunday night when it is not very busy. We left and went across the street. It is very disappointing they do not focus more on service or train their waitresses better. But there are too many other option n Carytown where you feel, your business is wanted.

Unfortunately I have knock two stars off my rating because of the new pricing. My boyfriend and I came here recently and both ordered sandwiches with fries. The waitress told us it was cheaper to split a large side of fries for $5 instead of ordering two small sides for $3. Confused, I asked her if sides don't come with your meal anymore and she said "oh... you're regulars... sorry, but we changed our pricing, so you don't get a sides anymore." That would be fine if they had lowered the price on their sandwiches, but to pay extra for a side when you're already paying $8-$10 for a sandwich is ridiculous. I'm sad to say that we probably won't come here anymore because of this :(

Got brunch here this morning and it was awful. We had to wait almost an hour for our meals and when they did finally arrive only about half of our order was actually there. I got the steak and eggs, which was supposed to come with hash browns and fruit, neither of which were delivered. The steak was burnt and exhausting to chew. My boyfriend's pancakes were burnt and his eggs did not come with cheese as he had requested. The aforementioned details were not even the worst part of the experience. We were fighting off flies from our food the entire time we were trying to eat. It was disgusting.

I come here about once a month, it's about a block away from where I live. The food and service are consistent and pleasant; my favorite dish is the French Dip. It's an enjoyable place you can take your parents at lunch, although at peak hours you may wait a bit for a table. As a general rule, with all the nice restaurants around town, I don't think any place is worth waiting for. If there is a line... keep walking. It gets loud and crowded at night, especially on the weekends; but that's after kids should be in bed anyway.

My service was great and food was awesome. I can see how service could be slow if things were busier, though.

Always a good time. Outstanding food, good service, great street view, patio dining for smokers. Clean bathrooms. Family place, friend place. Highly recommended. Hipsters generally think this place is "too mainstream". But who cares? Its awesome.

I'm a regular at New York Deli but only for night life. I like Carytown because it's really easy to bar hop if you're feeling that. New York Deli is nice though because the bartenders made delicious drinks and I love that it has the patio out back. Music here is always great and the bar is super long so it's never too hard to get a seat or just walk up and order a drink. I ate here once a long time ago and the food was fine but not a shining star like some other places in Richmond. Reese is my favorite bartender because I'm 'that girl' who never knows what drink I want and when I say "Can you just make something yummy?" it's literally always yummy. Except a Lemon Drop. I hate lemon drops. I could gag just thinking about a Lemon Drop. Try a Sweet Tart Shooter. I'm not sure what's in it but it literally tastes like the candy, the best balance of sweet and tart. That was obvious, I'm going to stop now haha.

I went during the Watermelon festival. I was surprised that with so much foot traffic outside, we were able to be seated almost immediately. We sat outside in the back patio area. It was hot outside, and the sun was shining, but that could hardly be controlled. Our server had 3 other tables seated at the same time, but he was very good about paying attention to us and getting us our drinks. The music was fun to listen to. It played anything from "tequila" to the Hawaii 5-0 theme song. I ended up ordering the Manhattan sandwich. It was delicious, and very large. I was stuffed by the time i left.

I have been here a number of times with my boyfriend as it is where we had our first date. Not once have I ever been disappointed. Not with dinner, lunch, or breakfast. I usually get the uptown grilled chicken and I add bacon, and oh my goodness it is the best sandwich I have ever had. Their fries are to die for, and since my boyfriend is a vegetarian there are plenty of options for him as well. There is great ambience and it is very cute but can sometimes be loud. The only thing I cannot stand is in the restaurant there are flies everywhere. I am terrified of bugs and this makes my experience very unenjoyable, but I try to deal with it because the food is so delicious.

Revisited a Christmas tradition. Before the deli went through an update we used to order the open face sandwich tray. We stopped several years ago with fear of disappointment due to new ownership. We took a chance this year and ordered the small tray. We were pleasantly surprised. The tray looked beautiful. We had lots of choices of meats, sandwiches and cheeses. This tray is the best ever for $40.00. Thank you New York Deli you did not disappoint. The sandwich tray tradition is back.

Great place for lunch in Carytown although the service at times can be iffy. Have never had a bad sandwich there but my fave salad , the pear and walnut with grilled chicken has been very inconsistent lately. Seems they have been putting some sparse ingredients in lately and that's disappointing.

My family was in town and we decided to try this after seeing a show at The Byrd. We are from New York living here in VA so we always get a little excited to try some food from home. Well the only thing 'New York' about this place is the pictures of New York on the walls. The food was mediocre and the service was poor. We will definitely not go back.

The first couple of times I came here for the food, and then after that for the drinks. This is because their food was subpar. I shared meals both times, so I have tried a burger, chicken tenders, and some of the breakfast items. Most of it tasted like it had been frozen too long, and the fries and tenders were over-fried and dark, which makes me wonder about the oil they use and its age. Everything was bland and lacked seasoning. The service has been pretty on-point and friendly. The atmosphere is great, since they redid it a while back. It's very spacious and dimly lit, which is calming. The drinks are well priced, especially at happy hour of course, and they sometimes have late night specials. Overall, the food has deterred me from giving NY Deli even three stars. It seems like their focus is more about night life.

Food is good I had the chicken salad wrap. I also got onion rings as my side (it was alright). Got a sprit and a diet cola and and my wife ordered uptown chicken. Service is ok.

I come here at least once a month and I love the sandwiches here. I also love the fact that they have Lagunitas sumptin sumptin or draft. The service is okay and the food is good. Prob be a go to place if you looking for lunch or evening din din.

Lameeeeeeeee. Came here on a Friday night and was wondering why the place was empty. As some other folks already mentioned they changed their pricing and now sandwiches dont come with fries. Instead they charge like 5 bucks for a plate of fries. Pretty lame. Not a good deal for a sandwich anymore. Probs won't be coming back here. Way to go New York deli. You messed up.

They offer $0.50 wing night on Tuesdays and on point beer battered fries [$6 for a basket]! Those are the main reasons why I frequent this place because everything else really isn't worth it. I do prefer this place over Bdubs though and think it's a better spot overall for wings, fries, and drinks. They offer 3 sauces for their wings: spicy buffalo, kentucky bourbon bbq, or ginger sesame soy so there's not much variety but they are all pretty good. The wings can sometimes be grievously overcooked but most of the time, they are really crispy and juicy. Their sandwiches are all about $9-10 but taste very average and not worth the money. Same goes for pretty much the rest of their menu, unfortunately. So come here if you and your friends want some drinks and cheap wings [on Tuesdays]. Food: 3 Value: 3 Service: 3 Overall: 3

I love this place. So many good times had here. The bartenders are great, the food is fantastic (get the French Dip), and the pours are honest. Beyond the staff and food, the regulars are some of the best at self-policing the herd. Karaoke in Thursdays, Trivia on Tuesdays, Burgers on Wednesdays, Mug night Mondays. SUNDAY NIGHTS = GAME NIGHT.
