Great bar with attentive friendly servers and bartenders. The bar upstairs is fun with great views. I've always had a great time here over the last decade, where everyone seems like a friend and is always glad to welcome you inside.

Atmosphere is bar friendly. Not for family. Food is ok. The ceviche is good. Drinks use to be good when they had the guava mojito. The fried banana/taro chips is good with drinks. Will i go back? Of course.

I had a business dinner here recently and I enjoyed it a lot. My guest was a huge fan of Cuban cuisine and advised me to get the Ropa Veija which I definitely enjoyed. I am not experienced with this cuisine so I found the flavor profile quite unique. We also enjoyed the Cuban Nachos as an appetizer and I can definitely recommend them. I was not able to explore the bar's offerings, but I am planning to go back with a selection from my humidor and try some mojitos and possibly a dessert. The waiter informed me that all of the deserts were made in house and I'm regretting skipping that Tres Leches. The restaurant does have a separate, well confined smoking area. Service was A+. Parking was a real pain, even on a Wednesday night. I think there is a paid lot behind the place, but I didn't see it. You can check their menu online, but many plates came in at $25+, so it's within Yelps $$ rating, but on the higher side.

Overrated. I was visiting Richmond and someone recommended this place for great vibes, mojitos and dancing. Arrived around 7 pm , was told you had to have reservations on Friday and Saturday night to sit downstairs in the dining area. There were a few empty tables. We were told the wait for downstairs dining would be an hour, however upstairs patios were open. The hostess forewarned us that it was was really h ot and humid up there, but where else was there to sit? We were confused, so she said we could sit in the smoking area side, which we tried, but the cigar smoke was prevalent. We decided to go upstairs and it was fine. There was a huge fan, a little breeze and not nearly as bad as she described it to be. I ordered the Cuban Spring Rolls, $9 appetizer and a Virgin Strawberry Daquri. The 3 small spring rolls lacked flavor, sort of bland fried dough with ham, cheese and pickles, with a mustard type dipping sauce. Overpriced and they may have been pre-frozen. We decided not to dine any further here. Service was very polite and attentive. However, they include the tip with your bill. I've seen this with large parties over 6 people, but not for 2 people with 2 drinks and an app. Who does that? So I tipped the server and blindly paid the tip that was included in the final bill. I honestly feel as though I was ripped off. I only wanted to check it out because it was a fun and festive place. Good for a get together with friends.

Partially my fault for not reading reviews but I come to Havana 59 alone and the host asks if I want to sit at the bar since I'm alone. I didn't want to take up a whole table, so I agreed. What the host forgot to mention is that the bar is in the part of the place completely full of Cigar smoke. Since I was already seated I didn't make a fuss but left smelling like an ashtray. Penetrating smoke smell aside, this place is really cool. The decor is great and the service was friendly. I had the ropa vieja which was pretty good compared to other places I've had it. Overall a neat place. I'm very sensitive to smoke so I most likely won't be chomping at the bit to get back here.

I loved the atmosphere of this place. Large garage doors open up to the street for an open air dining feel. I went for happy hour with a professional group that I'm involved with, so we all split appetizers. We had the fried calamari, oysters, nachos, and pizza. I also had a $5 mojito that had a ton of fresh mint. It did seems a little heavy on the ice to liquid ratio. Each of the appetizers had a unique sauce to really elevate them to the next level. The "chips" for the nachos were actually fried plantains which was unique. It was a great happy hour spot and I'd love to go back for an actual meal. I hear they also have salsa dancing on Thursdays.

Happy hour is pretty good. Great place to smoke a cigar and people watch. Just bring your own unless you want to pay a premium. Salsa upstairs on Thursday. Great dinner spot!

I have gone out twice to their salsa night and had a lot of fun. The drinks are priced about average. A jack and coke will run you $9, and the beers are ~$3.50. During the summer it does get a bit hot and sticky. Overall, as long as you have a partner that can handle the heat, it is a lot of fun.

I love Cuban food and this certainly piqued my curiosity. The atmosphere is inviting... Open air, music and aesthetic is definitely an island feel. There is a great selection of cigars and the cocktails are great... Large selection of mojitos. There is a hennessey-based 'orange is the new black' drink that has quite a kick. We also tried appetizers... The cuban spring rolls were interestingly delightful. Now to the reason why i rated this place a '3'... Service, service, service. The waiter treated us like we were a bother or and was not courteous... In fact, none of the wait staff was pleasant and all had scowls on their faces.

I went here with a bunch of lawyer friends (which in it of itself normally might cause concern when they pick restaurants). But, in celebration of improved US-Cuba relations, we had to go to Havana. I'll put it on the table right now - the food and drinks were splendid. The service is top notch - rivaling 5 star fine dining places I been to. The big warning is that expect the pricing to be a bit on the higher end (especially for Richmond - this might have even raised eyebrows for New York City). The mojito (especially the pomegranite mojito) was super well made and well balanced. All the food and appetizers including the friters, paella, taste of havana, and etc came in hearty (but not insanely ridiculous) portions that were super delightful. The interior decorating is interesting and artistic - not everyone's cup of tea, but I thought it was clever.

The best ceviche I have ever tasted.... I have eaten at Havana about 4 times in my 10 years in Richmond. All have been great with either family or friends or like tonight, with my SO. We went in this fine night because of a Groupon and cabin fever. We ordered the ceviche with marlin and tuna. It was mixed with thin slices if jalapeño, mango, and onion. It was stunning. It was served with plantain chips and malanga chips. They should bag the malanga chips and sell them. We also ordered drinks: a Dark & Stormy and the house Chardonnay. Both were perfect samples of what they should taste like. Sorry these are the only pictures I took! We then got the chicken empanadas, which were creamy and savory. We finished things off with the Taste of Habana with the Ropa Vieja (shredded flank steak). That steak was bathed in an incredible sauce and easy to shred with just a fork. My man was so pleased he ordered the seared tuna to go. TBD review on that! Looks amazing. I'm sad to report we didn't make it upstairs for salsa because I started to feel bad. But it looked hot and right up our ally. They were playing other modern dance hits like The Weekend. Next Thursday, maybe I'll see you there!

Great location in the heart of Shockoe Bottom! The friendly and welcoming staff create a lively atmosphere through casual conversation, great music, and of course amazing food. I ordered the grilled big-eye tuna. Perfectly cooked to still allow a faint allusion to sushi in the center. This dish was served with asparagus and forbidden rice. Each portion of the entrée perfectly complimented another. All in all, I beg you to eat here. You will feel like you belong, and are a part of the Havana 59 family. Oh, and did I mention it has a terrific rooftop view over the city?! In all seriousness, it is safe to say that I will remember this dining experience for years to come.

Havana 59 is kind of a mixed bag. I've gone here for cocktails a few times and it has a really fun vibe - especially when the weather is nice and the giant windows are open. However, you may or may not leave here smelling like an ash tray. It's a Cuban place and they sure do love their cigars so if you're willing to risk a spritz of eua de ashtray for a pretty standard cocktail list this could be your jam. I've always heard good things about the food so maybe my expectations were a little too high but I finally had a chance to try some of their food and it was fine. I had the snapper and there was nothing wrong with it but there also wasn't anything remarkable about it. The deviled egg appetizer has chorizo on it and is really good. The calamari is pretty good as well and only $4 during happy hour. All in all I think it's more of a happy hour kind of place. We had a Groupon when we went for dinner and I think that if we'd paid full price I would have felt that we'd overpaid.

I have been here twice and both times thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The atmosphere is a lot of fun and well put together. They have a bar on one side and a restaurant on the other. As many of the reviews stated, try a mojito - you can't go wrong. They also have a good craft beer selection. If you like nachos with a twist, try the Cuban Nacho's: Plantain chips topped with beef picadillo, melted cheese, onions, peppers, black beans, jalapenos, sour cream & fresh cilantro. The empanadas and ceviche are also good appetizers. For dinner, I had the Taste of Havanah: Authentic Cuban dish consisting of black beans, jasmine rice, plantains and Beef Picadillo. It was cooked very well and the portion was large! Overall a fun place to go with family and friends for a dinner of evening out in Richmond.

The restaurant is open air which lends to cuban authenticity and the food was supurb. Nice service and quick.

It was ok, not impressive. Beautiful interior. The Nachos do Cubano were awesome... I had the Paella, generous amounts of mussels, shrimp and scallops. The problem was that there was so little chorizo and it was not really the right type, that the cumin and other spices could not balance the extremely strong taste of oregano. Seriously, I had oregano with a side rice and seafood. I hate a bit of my buddies Taste of Havana was awesome. Our wives had the Mufungo. Nothing like they were used to, the sauce was strange, lemon curry....would done have done better balancing the curry with recau, not lemon. Service was...ehhh. if you are a rabid ex-sImoker, the bar is off limits, you will smell like ashtray.

Pretty good mojitos with different variations. Check out happy hour specials, they are pretty legit. Don't forget to visit the upstairs on Thursday for Salsa dancing. If you suck at dancing, don't try to hog the dance floor.

  • Courtney T.

Havana is always cool. The food is not that great but the drinks are good. Salsa night on Thursdays is the best! It's such a great way to escape a richmond and have fun with so many different people. Plus it's cheap and not too late at night.

It was great coming back to this spot. Music was great. Food outstanding. Atmosphere very friendly. Nice to see everyone enjoying cigars, even women. I plan to smoke my first authentic cuban cigar here next weekend. I love to get the booth all the way in the far corner of the bar area, which has the word "Cigar" over the booth. Anyone visiting Richmond must stop by.

I always enjoy myself at Havana. It's my favorite bar in RVA. I really really REALLY love coming here. We sat at the bar and Olivia was our bartender - she was great! Very attentive and nice. Mojitos were (as usual) delicious and I enjoyed some cuban nachos (fried plantains with black beans, cheese, salsa and sour cream - they usually come with meat but I don't eat pork or beef so I went veggie)...AMAZING. I really cannot wait to go back for round 2! They have great happy hour food AND drink specials! I also highly HIGHLY recommend the jalapeno mango mojito. O.M.G. This, of course, only pertains to folks who enjoy spicy things. If you don't like spicy, you won't like this drink. The staff at Havana are always so great. Very professional and courteous. I love every opportunity I have to hit this little taste of Cuba!

Went to Havana 59 with some friends while in town for work. My first observation was that it had a great atmosphere! Very festive, Havana 1950s (which is the point - but they did a good job). There is a bar side and a dinner side, separated by a complete wall with doors. There is smoking in the bar side - which is mostly for cigars! They have a humidor and you can purchase cigars there. I don't smoke but I thought it was a nice touch for those that enjoy a cigar every now and then. Although I did have to wash everything I was wearing when I got home. They have great happy hour specials 430 to 630 - $4 mojitos and cheap appetizers, among others. The best way to go here is get here early for happy hour drinks and small plates. We each also had an entree which we all enjoyed, but felt they were over priced. I had the snapper which came with green curry sauce, mushrooms and bok choy. The curry sauce was amazing but the fish was just ok. I think I'll stick to the happy hour appetizers and drinks for the most part here. The mojitos and atmosphere were amazing so I will definitely be returning! Also, the waitress/bar tender was excellent.

The food was great, had the baby back ribs which were done the way I like them with a sweet - spicy sauce. It also came with collard greens and corn bread, which I had not planned on eating, but couldn't stop. Service was great, as we found with most of the restaurants we visited in the area. Surprisingly, we found that it is popular enough that one should have a reservation, even on a Wednesday eve. We ended up having to wait 15 minutes, but well worth the time. The only problem I had is that it also has a cigar bar, which effected my breathing. In that it IS a cigar bar, duhh, I should have figured. While I don't drink, my coworker does and to get her a glass of wine while we waited for our table, we did have to go to the bar. Oh and my coworker was surprised how inexpensive wine prices were. $5.00 for a nice glass full of white wine.

$4 for Traditional Mojitos during happy hour, and they are absolutely delicious. They also have other flavored Mojitos and an awesome Hennessey Mojito. The atmosphere is like a Cuban Smoking Lounge, with a decent, well-priced cigar menu and again really well made mojitos. The food is not as good as the drinks, and the waitstaff can be short. Take a seat at the bar, that's where this place shines.

I always enjoy people watching here. Think young drunken 20-something throwing herself at a middle aged suit. During happy hour. The service is very good and the mojitos and appetizers are a perfect way for date night or ladies night.

I have been to this restaurant several times before have always enjoyed the food and atmosphere. The decor is old world Cuban and service was excellent. Carmela took great care of us. We had the Ropa Vieja 4.3 star, paella 3.7 stars and ceviche 2.3 ceviche. I had a double black currant mojito and it was delicious 5 Stars. I rarely see any kind of currant offered in the US. The braised beef and paella were very good. The ceviche was "ok" but I would not order it from here again. I find it very difficult to find good ceviche unless i make it or find it fresh in a Peruvian restaurant..which I have yet to find in Richmond, VA. If you are in downtown Richmond and looking for top notch Mojitos, service and atmosphere, you should pay Havana 59 a visit. You won't regret it. 4.3 Stars overall..

Their mojitos are to die for! And the ceviche is phenomenal! I like how they have the bar sectioned off so people can purchase and smoke cigars if they like. And the salsa dancing on Thursdays are always a great time!

Excellent venue for a night out! My husband and I attended their New Year's Eve Salsa Event and was treated very well. Enjoyed the three-course meal and cocktails. The manager even called us a cab when we were unable to catch one on this very busy holiday. The only room for improvement is the dance floor was too hot and too small. Other that that, it's a hit! We will be back upon returning to Richmond!

I have only been here once for Thursday night salsa/Bachata dancing, but I am already itching to come back. When I go dancing, I like to take in account the music, the instructor (if any), the crowd, and the venue. My fiancee had been here before, and he knew that I would like this place. And he was right! There's two floors. First floor was the dining area that evening and the moment I walked in I didn't feel that I was in cold rainy Shockoe Bottom anymore. The second floor has a bar and the space was cleared for dancing. Half of the second floor is a covered balcony - the windows roll up when the months are warmer, which is awesome. And that gives for a nice cool breeze in the winter when you're feeling hot after dancing and sweating all evening. There was an instructor from Salsa For Life, and she did a great job motivating everyone because all 40+ people were moving. The music had a mix of salsa and Bachata, which is Poking approved. I tend to get tired of non-stop salsa music. Besides, I have a bigger place in my heart for bachata. I've danced plenty of places - San Diego, Los Angeles, Seattle, and I have to say the dancers at Havana that night struck me as the most attractive group I've ever seen dancing. Now that's not to say that everyone was worthy of being on the cover of a magazine, but the people were put together. Well dressed, well groomed, and "date-able" as I like to put it. I already have a significant other but for those of you who don't, take note. Like I mentioned, there were about at least 40 people and the venue was able to hold them on the dance floor without a problem. I'll be back Havana, and I look forward to those summer nights on the balcony.

I love this place. Sat on the roof on a warm night and forgot we were even in richmond. The mojitos were good and Pablo's punch was amazing. The Cuban sandwich spring rolls were the bomb.com and so were the nachos and bread pudding. I highly recommend this place, especially when the weather is warm!

We only ordered cigars and drinks and boy was our bill outrageous! This is not the place to go if you are dining on a budget! But the ambiance is cool and you can smoke inside and the staff are pretty friendly. In afraid to go back and see how much the food is priced!

Thought the food was great. Excellent flavor and seasoning. I had the "Taste of Havana". I was there on a Monday night, thanks for being open, so the atmosphere was naturally a little down tempo.

With the hit-or-miss reviews on Yelp, I'll admit a was a little concerned about bringing my work group to Havana 59 as I had never been. But the guest of honor wanted to smoke a cigar after dinner and Yelp pointed me to this Shockoe Bottom restaurant and watering hole ... and I couldn't have been happier with the choice. After parking in the 17th Street Farmers Market ($5 well spent), we were welcomed into this open, airy, and, yes, slightly over-the-top themed space. We started with drinks along with Cuban Nachos and Pork Morsels as appetizers. The pork was cooked perfectly and seasoned nicely although it was hard to get much of the thin cilantro sauce on them but as I don't think they needed it as they stood well on their own. Likewise, the Cuban Nachos went quickly as the plantain chips paired well with the minced beef mixture. There were five of us and between us we got the Kona Perch (perch wrapped in Serrano ham with veggies), Jerk Pork (jerk-spiced pork loin in a pineapple rum emulsion with fingerling potatoes), Steak Frites (grilled NY Strip in a red wine veal reduction along with yucca fries), Atlantic Cod (the night's seasonal fish cooked with an almond-plantain crust with a rutabaga-crab slaw on a creamy corn cake), and '59 Paella (perch, tuna shrimp, escargot, salmon, and chorizo with short-grained rice). Except for the paella (which was deemed just 'okay'), everyone raved about their dishes. I was thrilled as the Yelp reception had looked hit-or-miss. I personally had the Atlantic Cod which was cooked perfectly and the almond/plantain crust was an unusual addition that made the dish a unique experience for me. Likewise, I can honestly say I have never though of pairing lump crabmeat with julienned rutabaga for a slaw but it worked really, really well with the jalapeno-pomegranate vinaigrette. Great dish that left my plate completely clean. We opted to skip dessert as we all wanted to make our way to bar to sample the Scotch and cigar menus. Glasses were filled with Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Ardbeg, Balvenie, and Oban and they were soon joined with cigars from Padron, Ashton, Rocky Patel, La Gloria, and Montecristo. Nothing could have provided a better atmosphere for the conversation than some great peaty Scotch, smoke from some top-notch cigars, and the gentle breeze coming in from a cool September night. A fantastic evening at great location with attentive and friendly staff. Recipe for return visits for sure!

Beautiful establishment, but wouldn't serve a buddy and I drinks at 12:00AM with a party of 9 already there. One of the owners/managers said it was slow so they were closing the bar. In my opinion, not the right response for incoming customers willing to spend. However the cigars were great and I'll probably give em' another shot when it gets warm.

Simply amazing. The food is outstanding. The service is top notch. They're extremely accommodating when it comes to private events. I had my wedding reception here and they were great. Even after a few hiccups, they were able to carry out a fantastic reception for us.

Havana '59 is fair. Not wonderful. The first floor has lots of character, but if you're ushered upstairs you will be deprived of most of the character. Waitstaff was, eh, ok. Never brought the beer menu I requested. Never brought salt and pepper as requested. Food was a little better than fair. I have no compelling reason to return.

This is just a really fun place to go to for happy hour which starts at 4:30pm and ends at 6:30pm on most days and 7:30pm on Fridays [for drinks]. The prices for the appetizers are $4 while the drinks vary. Though I'm not a smoke lover, the smoking section really is more fun here. If you like cigars, they even offer those! The section opens up to the sidewalk and the atmosphere is lively so it feels like you've been transported to a bar at the beach. To add to the beach vibe, they have their regular mojitos [my fave!] for $4 during their HH. They are freshly made and on the sweet side--- but are very refreshing! Their HH food is fine to snack on while you're drinking--nothing spectacular though [but it's only $4 so can't really complain there] Servers here are always cheery and really add to the whole experience. They make your visit there really relaxing and fun! Food: 3 Value: 4 Service: 4.5 Overall: 4

Tried this place for the first time and my overall attitude towards this establishment was it that the food was good but the atmosphere was a bit lacking. They do have a variety of daily specials which seem like good deals. Happy hour seemed average, cigar selection was decent. One thing I noticed was the employees did seem distant at times and even agitated or annoyed sometimes. The prices seemed a bit too high even for the quality of some dishes. Barramundi was excellent, Cuban nachos and pork morsels are a must.

If you want to find me late on a Friday night, try here first. Most likely I'll be at the bar with a stogie in my mouth and a drink in my hands laughing with my friends. I can't really tell you how the food is, cause when I do order food here it's black beans and rice. However, I can tell you to make sure you get some fresh crema on top of the rice n beans if you do order them. Bring a cigar from your own humidor or order one from their fantastic selection.

Good mojitos with fresh lime juice, large open windows, and fun atmosphere for a lazy Saturday late afternoon. I haven't tried their food, but their fresh ginger mojitos are pretty darn good. I was impressed with all the fresh ingredients that were used in the drink... No high fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners.

The food, the service and ambience were exceptional. Maybe the Budweiser Clydesdales who were in town help to put us in the celebratory mood, but certainly the restaurant helped to finish off a great evening with colleagues. Started out with three appetizers-- calamari, tuna tartar and ceviche. They were all exceptional, but certainly the tuna tartar was great. Great flavor and a bit spicy as well. You can even have a cigar at the bar next to the restaurant seating area. For the main course I had the Coastal Paella which was very good. Flavorful mussels and shrimp along with a well aged serrano ham and chorizo. And to finish off, my dessert was a passion fruit mojito. If you want a good rating from me, put something with passion fruit on the menu. Always an exotic crowd pleaser.

I occasionally go to Havana 59 for HH. Havana 59 has some good mojitos at a reasonable price and appetizer specials during happy hour. I recently stopped by for dinner during the week. For my appetizer, I ordered pork morsels and fish tacos. I really enjoyed the pork morsels. The cilantro dipping sauce complimented the pork very well. The fish tacos really hit the spot. I had a hard time choosing an entree. I decided on the Ashley Farms Chicken Breast (roasted chicken with tamarind, rum, soy glazed with white sweet potatoes, braised Napa cabbage and plantain lime salsa).I was really impressed with this dish. The chicken was cooked well. I enjoyed the flavors from the dish. I looked over the dessert menu before coming to the restaurant. I already had my mind set on the tres leches cake with strawberry coulis. I must say the tres leches cake did not disappoint. I really enjoyed very bite. Havana 59 tres leches cake is definitely some of the best tres leches cake I've eaten in Richmond. The cake was creamy and flavorful. I like how the strawberry coulis complimented the cake. The portion size of the tres leches cake was a bit small. My server was attentive. Havana 59 has smoking and non smoking areas. If you're not a fan of cigar smoke, avoid sitting in the bar area. It's best to eat at Havana 59 on a nice day because the staff pulls all the windows open. Customers get a nice breeze while eating or drinking. Parking can be a hassle especially during happy hour or weekends. There are places where you can pay to park around the area if you can't find street parking.

Let me tell you a little story about Havana 59. This one time, I went to Havana to celebrate a friend's birthday. Since her day of birth coincided with Havana's Thursday night salsa dancing, we decided that dinner, drinks, and salsa combined to create the perfect birthday bash combo. We had a fairly large party, so we were seated upstairs in an almost private section adjacent to the salsa dancing area. Dinner was tasty, although I was a little surprised by the prices. They seemed a bit higher than what I expected and I'm still not sure the entrees are worth the steep price tags. But I ordered the plantain nachos minus the meat (actually called Cuban Nachos, from the appetizer section), so they were much cheaper and provided me with plenty of food. Our waitress was on top of everything throughout our meal, and I was impressed by her ability to constantly keep our cocktail orders straight and our glasses filled. Speaking of cocktails- I don't know what Havana puts in those suckers, but holy heavy-handed pours. Those babies are dangerous! After having two refreshing mojitos before and during dinner, I decided to switch to vodka soda. I think the bartender only heard me say vodka.... pretty sure the soda was absent. Not that I'm complaining. After all, who doesn't want to get more than their money's worth when downing drinks? But just wanted to throw it out there that if you're looking for strong drinks, Havana's the place. And if you've got an early meeting the next morning... well, just be careful. As for the salsa dancing- 5 stars all the way. This was absolutely some of the best people watching I've done in a long long time. The crowd was super eclectic, which I love! And some of those people really know how to salsa. I, unfortunately, am not one of them. But I can pretend like my moves are killer... at least in my mind (unfortunately- or fortunately depending on the way you look at it- my moves are more like jagger than like JLo in Shall We Dance). If you're looking for a fun night (with a good chance of it even being a late night) filled with energy, dancing, and new friends, then I recommend Havana salsa nights all the way.

Went for first time just to see what all the fuss is about. I was not disappointed. As a cigar lover I admit I near fell off my stool when I saw a couple of guys beside me light up a stogie...in the bar! Then I noticed the women beside me also smoking. Trying to look less like the wolf with his eyes popping out of his head (sorry - 80's cartoon reference), and more like a regular who belonged, I bought a reasonably priced Maduro 50-ring. It came with an offer to cut, cigar-sized ashtray, and matches. Very nice. Since the rain had stopped they opened the windows so it was not smoky at all. I am a beer guy so I admit I was disappointed to find they don't serve any draft beer. But the cool vibe was getting to me and since it was my first time I asked the bartender if they had a signature drink. He was quick to reply that it was the Mojito. So I there I sat for about 45 minutes soaking in the Cuban / Carribean-ish atmosphere enjoying my smoke and my Mojito (pretty tasty BTW). People were friendly mostly 30 to 45 crowd. Pretty laid-back with no loud or drunk people to ruin it. The bartenders were all ultra-professional, fast, friendly, and not above joining a conversation with the crowd around the bar. Eventually I ordered some wings. They had a unique tangy Asian sauce which was good, but too much breading. I found myself taking off most of the breading. Still, very meaty and bartender was quick with a wet towel and lemon. The most attentive barkeep I've encountered in a while. While it's a steep drive from Chesterfield I will definitely be back. Wish I had done this sooner.

Me and my wife went for dinner last night. Both being hispanic, the ambience, setting and music was very warm and welcoming. The food was amazing. We had never had meat more tender and juicy than the Steak Frites. Try it! You wont regret! The cilantro sauce was also a hit. Its our absolute favorite. We will be sure to come back when we are back in town.

Viva la revolution! I simply can't hit this place enough - and that makes it hard since I live like 300 miles from it... It is absolutely worth the ride though!

It turned out to be happy hour when we went here so it was a great deal. $4 mojitos, empanadas, and calamari (normally $9). My boyfriend and I split the paella and loved it. In our opinion it was better than Kuba Kuba's but not quite as good as Europa's, although each had different tastes so it probably isn't fair to compare them. It wasn't served in a traditional paella dish and it was not quite as large as we expected, but certainly enough food for one person.. two if you had two appetizers like we did. We also had the baked chicken which was amazing. Service was quick and helpful! We would definitely go again, but only during happy hour for the good prices on appetizers.

I had visited H59 a few times over the past ten years when visiting family/friends in my old town. When I befriended a Latin woman this past summer, I had mentioned the 59 as a place it would be great to spend an evening at. Finally, we got the chance - and it was a disaster. I made reservations through their Open Table line. When we arrived, the host tried to seat us in the bar. I said we couldn't sit in the smoking bar, as my friend was highly sensitive and allergic. I mentioned that I didn't say anything in my reservation about a smoking section. He told us that 'all reservations from Open Table are automatically seated in the bar, that this is the way they are set up.' I didn't lose my temper, but told him that was not acceptable. He told me it could be a half hour before we got a table. At this point, we didn't have that many choices on a Saturday night w/o reservations somewhere else - so I agreed. Of course, we couldn't wait in the bar, so we stood outside, where we were hit on by two different panhandlers. FORTY minutes later, they called us in. We sat down. Five minutes later, the host was back. 'We made a mistake, this table is reserved for a party. It will take five-ten more minutes.' If I had been by myself, or with friends, I would have given someone a piece of my mind by now, but since I was with one individual and trying to make the most of this place I'd been talking up and that I'd driven all the way downtown from my Short Pump hotel for, I smiled and said 'okay'. Five minutes later, we were finally seated. The host had made some sort of vague promise that 'we'd be taken care of for our troubles.' There seemed to be a floor manager walking around, but he never stopped at our table - and we were NOT 'taken care of' in any way. The meal was fine, the drinks decent, but the edge for the evening was long spoiled. I felt I had wasted ninety dollars...we should have stood in line at Bottoms Up instead. The young man who was hosting had a nice personality, but he obviously was untrained in how to handle something like this...the floor manager should have been notified and we should have gotten a visit, an apology, an offer of a drink or dessert or a dinner discount...SOMEthing! There was a tiny part of me that wondered if someone hadn't screwed something up with our reservation in the first place, but we'll never know. When I got home, I got an e-mail from Open Table, asking for feedback, that they said would be forwarded to the restaurant. I outlined this same story. I never heard anything from Open Table, or the restaurant, even though I checked off a box authorizing a reply. Needless to say, I think this was my last trip to Havana '59.

Havana 59 is hands down my favorite Happy Hour in Richmond! Fun atmosphere, excellent staff, delicious cocktails and yummy appetizers! In reading all of the other reviews, how has no one mentioned how awesome the staff are? Pablo makes the best Dark n'Stormy in the area! He's always very attentive and keeps your glass full. Colt is also an excellent bartender. AJ, one of the servers is also a favorite. He is very patient and agreeable. Even when it's clear that he's slammed, he always seems to be in a good mood.

I'd been hearing about this place for a while and finally decided to take my mom and grandma there for dinner. It disappointed all three of us. The food was really salty and a lot of dishes on the menu weren't Cuban. The rice was too wet and the Cafe Cubano wasn't made properly. It was ok - but I wouldn't go back.

WOULD NOT SURVIVE IN MIAMI. Seriously! If you're from down south and you're looking for some authentic Cuban food , don't come here ! The waiter we had didn't have much personality , I didn't even know his name and he didn't look like he was happy to be there. I went to dinner with my fiancé and on Saturday night and we ordered Paella , empanadas , "Cuban nachos" and tostones . 1. They don't have tostones on the menu but they do have them . They were tiny and over all okay. I did ask for cilantro sauce , it didn't have the right consistency, maybe too much time in the blender it was watery. 2. The paella was $24 and the portion was very small . It tasted okay, the rice was a little over done . The entire dish as a whole was bland . 3. The empanadas were horrible . They try to make them took fancy . They give you 3 small empanadas and they taste nothing like empanadas , from any country in South America . The dough was bad (very dry) , not enough seasoning on the inside very bland . 4. The Cuban nachos was probably the only thing I could eat. It was plantain chips with black beans , ground beef and some veggies . It was not a large portion. When u order an appetizer you share with multiple people , there's no way you are sharing that between two . We had some mojitos , those were fine. DESSERT : We ordered the tres leches . And who in their right mind would put guava in the tres leches ? I don't know ! I really don't ! It's an original , why would u do that!!! Also their expresso machine was broken , so no cafe con leach for me . The meal cost $96 with the tip included . Will I be back? For dinner HELL NO!! It sucked , the food was Fine , but for fine I can go to Denny's. Definitely not worth what they ask for it . If you are looking for Cuban food and it's your 1st time don't go here , you'll regret it . I will keep going for salsa dancing in Thursday nights . Probably the best crowd in town . But I will never have a meal here again .

Horrible food and way over priced. Worst Cuban food I've ever put in my mouth. The decor is a little bit too theme park like. The calamari was limp tough and covered in what appeared to be cornmeal. The taste of Cuba was even worse every dish was over cooked and under seasoned. Avoid all together! Update Wow you must have me confused with someone else I was referring to my dinner 02/02/13 and after this further show of rampant incompetence, I will definitely never return.

I came here for a Thursday happy hour with a couple of friends. We split a few apps and had many drinks. The service was friendly, attentive and very charming. Good times. The empanadas were really tasty with a great dipping sauce. The spring rolls were also quite good. The pork morsels seemed a little dry, perhaps overcooked but the cilantro dipping sauce helped moisten them up a bit. Drink specials were good too and quite cheap. Decent selection of Mexican / Caribbean imports and micros, local and national. Nice atmosphere and fun place to hang out.

Kind of a neat place with character. We wanted to try dishes with Cuban flair, so we had the cuban nachos first. Nice presentation with the plantain chips, and the black bean salsa was great. I had the coastal paella, which was very good...especially the chicken. My wife had the empanadas. She like them, but I thought they were just a little too "pastry". We don't typically go for dessert, but we split a slice of homemade key lime pie. It was amazing. I might come back for dessert and coffee alone! The only negative to this place is that the bar area also serves as a cigar bar. The strong smokey smell didn't seem that noticeable when we were there, but when we got home, you definitely smelled it in your clothes. All in all, I would go back. But it would be early in the evening before the heavy cigar smokers take over the place.

I love Cuban food and I love Havana 59. Great food, great environment, great service and an easy location to get to and to find close-by parking. I have try most menu items over time and I can't find a favorite, I love them all. If you're new to Cuban food, try the Taste of Havana. The once a week dance floor upstairs is well worth the very reasonable $3 cost and the salsa dancing is so much fun. Just go and judge by yourself, my bet is that you'll love it too.

I mostly go to Havana for the cigar bar and drinks with friends. They have a decent cigar selection and good happy hour deals on mojitos and domestic beers. Their beer selection is fairly good as well with some very good local brews. The food here is good but most of the dinner dishes are pricey. Stick to the cuban dishes for the better meals. Overall, excellent place for a cigar and some drinks with good cuban food if you're in the mood.

I'm not really sure how many stars to give...possibly 3 if the description wasn't "A-OK". It was just "OK". The blueberry mojito and empanada appetizer were a delight; however, the snooty service and cockroaches (crawling around in the dining area!) left a lot to be desired. Perhaps the snootiness came from using the LivingSocial coupon like we were low class citizens, pinching pennies, which was definitely not the case. Don't offer coupons if you don't want people to use them! Bland tuna, overly-lubed salad, not sure I'll be going back any time soon to dine. On the contrary, I would recommend this place for strong drinks and cigars.

Great food. Went for happy hour and ordered a mojito which I was told was 4 dollars. when I got the bill apparently it was 9 dollars. Asked to speak to a manager about this and he gave me an attitude. He was very condescending. I had to go back and forth with him to just give me they price of the happy hour mojitos. However, he refused. I told him I would no longer return as a customer and he in turn gave me only a two dollar discount. So much for customer loyalty. I will never come back to this establishment after how I was treated. I advise NO ONE to go to this place unless you want to be talked down to and treated like an idiot. DO NOT GO HERE.

Havana 59 was a huge disappointment. My mother & I dropped by this evening after running errands. The atmosphere was great. Today was one of the first nights open air dining was an option. First, let me say the service was great. The hostess & waitress were very pleasant. We ordered two Mojitos, one Mango & one Strawberry, both were very good. I ordered the "Taste of Havana" which had a sample of Ropa Vieja, Picadillo, pulled pork, rice & black beans. My mother ordered the Coastal Paella. Both lacked flavor & my meat was seriously over cooked. Tasted like it had been roasting under a fast food heating lamp for hours. We told the waitress, but she said there was nothing she could do about it. We paid 76 dollars for 2 drinks & 2 entrees. When I got home I gave my leftovers to my dogs & I doctored up my mother's dish by cooking garlic, onion, & adding paprika, salt & pepper. The drinks were good. The atmosphere was good, but the food was bad. Don't waste your money on the food.

This place is great. The wait staff was attentive and the food awesome. The atmosphere had a young adult vibe and the bar scene upstairs only added to the vibe. I have been and will be going back to this place.

I came here for the salsa night (Thur) and went downstairs for some grub when I got hungry. I had the mofongo creollia, plantain bread pudding with a mango rum sauce, and mango mojito. Mofongo Creollia - the sauce and the mofongo itself were flavorful. The vegetable inside the mofongo could use some more seasoning. Plantain bread pudding - delicious and the whipped cream complimented the bread pudding. Mango mojito - was there any alcohol in it AT ALL?

Just went to Havana59 for the first time - I bought tickets for their New Year's 2015 salsa party. Tickets were supposed to be for dancing and complimentary glass of champagne at midnight. They did hand out *a few* glasses of champagne but definitely not everyone got one, including me and my date. Since that was advertised as part of your paid ticket, they should have done a better job with making sure the champagne got distributed throughout the room and dance floor to everyone who wanted some. I also feel they oversold the tickets a bit - it got so crowded in there we were all bumping into each other constantly. Some trash receptacles and empty glass bins would have been nice - with none available people were putting their empty beer bottles and cocktail glasses on the floor and the trash really piled up - by the end of the night the place looked like a slum. Very unsightly and unprofessional. Also, the place was certainly warm enough and didn't need two outdoor heaters right in the middle of the dance floor - we could definitely have used those heaters on the upstairs outdoor balcony though. After midnight my date and I went down to the cigar bar and I have to say that was stellar. Great selection of scotch and bartenders were very friendly. The decor in bar was cool too. I might go back for the cigar bar but probably not again for another salsa party.

Havana 59 is a really cute restaurant. The drink special of the night when we went on a Wednesday was the classic mojito, and it was very tasty. The menu had a lot of red meat on it, so I was limited in what I could order. BF and I ended up ordering some appetizers to share, plus a side of sweet plantains. Other than the plantains, nothing stood out to me as tasting particularly Cuban. The plantains were my favorite item we ordered. The fried calamari was nothing special, and the coconut shrimp were very sweet. The ceviche of the day was shrimp, and I really couldn't eat it because it had a strange taste to it. I think it was one of the spices, but I couldn't identify it. The best part of the night was being given a vintage-looking postcard from the restaurant that the hostess mailed for us. It was a fun touch.

4 stars for DRINKS. Best mojito's I've had in Richmond. They also have this blueberry mojito which was on point. The white peach margarita was salty. I LOVED their mango jalapeno margarita they had (it may have been a martini...don't remember). Their sangria is amazing! The prices were great for the happy hour. They have happy hours on the week days with food options that are reduced price. 3 stars for FOOD. I tried their Cuban nachos. It was NOT savory at all. The interesting thing was they give it to you with large plantain chips which was neat. I went another time and tried something called The Taste of Habana...I wouldn't recommend it because it was also not very savory. It's because they have this beef picodillo ("Cuban Chili") which is not savory at all. I did get a chance to try the Flank Steak dish wish was actually very good. I tried the calamari once and the sauce it came with was very good. The rest of the menu looks quite appetizing and is very unique and I'm definitely curious about it so will be coming back! I tried their desserts from my friends and they use a lot of bananas which I love personally. I think they fry the banana or grill it or what ever but it tastes so good. The flan was also amazing there. 4 stars for ATMOSPHERE/RESTAURANT If you sit on the smoking side you get more of the atmosphere than you would get in non-smoking. The smoking side is opened up so you can feel the outdoor temperature and they have real palm trees in the restaurant. Very fun and lively place. The non-smoking side I actually don't like at all- it makes me feel like I'm sitting in extra space.

Mojito's are good. Decent beer and wine selection. Food is just ok but I have only been here twice. The calamari looked like shark chum and tasted funk nasty. The empanadas tasted like deep fried ravoli's out of a can. The banana nachos with pork fat and beef was boring and needed more spices. Quite bland. And if you like old men puffing and blowing cigars in your face at the bar, this is the place. For the most part, Havana 59's atmosphere and decor is relaxing. The waitstaff are very attentive minus the bartender with reddish hair. She needs to go. I will probably go back another time and try again. Maybe I will get lucky

If you like to smoke cigars, this is the place to go in Richmond. Great, casual, friendly atmosphere, and the mojitos are excellent. I personally didn't try the food (kitchen was closed as we arrived late), but three foodie friends recommended Havana 59 as their "favorite place to go when in Richmond."

5 of my friends from work wanted to go here because they had advertised "free" salsa lessons. The restaurant was practically empty when we arrived despite a fairly constant flow of people going up stairs for the dance lessons. Several of us got fish which was dry and hard. It was very overcooked. I asked for a side of plantains of which they gave me four slices. When I hear Cuban food I think plantains so I was hoping for more. We all had tres leches cake. We decided our local supermarket made much better. It was good but not as good as it could have been. When we walked in the guy who showed us to our table noticed I had a bottle of water. I take this water everywhere as I am a firm believer in drinking lots of water to stay healthy. He told me that it was illegal to bring my water into the restaurant. I'm an older guy and have never, in my life, been asked to not bring my bottle of water into a restaurant. I was astonished. In fact, I usually ask restaurants to refill my bottle of water and have never had a problem. Then he surprised me further by saying, just keep it out of sight and you should be fine. OK...so you annoy us by saying we are breaking the law and then tell us the proper way to break the law? So I put it aside for our mean and just before we leave to go upstairs to dance, another lady comes over and asks if we were the same people that were at that table (some of us had left) and then told us the same thing the first guy told us about. At this point I'm ready to walk out and never come back. She was fairly rude about it. However, at the end of her rant about the "law" she too tells me to just keep it out of site. Finally we go upstairs for the "free" salsa lessons. This turned out to be false advertising as they were charging $3 to get in. The $3 is NOT a problem but it was false advertising which just left me with a final blow to my sense of what is legal and what is not. Bottom line, I felt that this place seemed to have a deep distrust for their customers and did not know how to cook fish. I am soooo done with this place.

Havana 59 wasn't what I expected so this review may not be fair. Our hotel concierge recommended Havana 59 for live music and fun atmosphere. And when I think Cuban, I think festive and fun! It was a ghost town at 10:30 at night on a Saturday. There were a handful of people over in the bar area and just 2 tables in the restaurant area. The staff hovered over us, obviously ready to go home. There wasn't any live music. We met our friends, had dessert here and went back to our Hotel. The desserts were mediocre. One of our friends had calamari instead of dessert and she thought it was over-fried.

This is my favorite place in Richmond. Lots of restaurants have great food and great atmosphere. Havana 59 is right there with them. What sets this place apart are the people. The bartenders, waitstaff, chef, manager, and owner are ALL friendly and attentive. My favorite time to sit at the bar having dinner with a cigar and a scotch is Monday through Wednesday because it's a little more quiet and easy to have conversations with the staff and other regulars.

After my third trip to Havanas I have decided not to return. I very much wanted to like it as I appreciate all the effort they have put into the building and the unique if kitschy interior. However it is not worth the expense and disappointment. On our last visit my GF and I had a nice seat in the bar by the garage door windows and the place was pretty busy for a thursday night. Our waiter was unable to conceal his disapproval/disdain when we both deferred on the offered mojitos and asked for a coke and water to start. After he adjusted his smirk he gave us menus and went on his way. He comes back with the beverages and I ordered the cuban spring rolls and asked for a caipirinha. The Caipirinha was served in what appeared to be a small rocks glass that held maybe 8 0z. It was kiddie sized so I asked for a tall (double), the double was not much bigger. I didnt expect it to be in a hurricane glass but at least a normal sized hi ball glass would have been nice. The spring rolls were bland and totally overpowered by the smallest amount of the mustard dipping sauce. For the entree I got the Tuna Tartare and my GF the Ashley Farms Chicken Breast. The tuna was ok but other than the onion and jalepeno really didn't have much flavor, rather blah. The chicken breast was not what was described. It was a breast quarter with the wing and back portion so basically it was a glorified chicken wing with a little breast meat on it. The flavor was nice but the presentation and small amount of actual breast meat was sad. If its a bone in skin covered piece of yard bird it should say so. She was expecting a full split boneless breast. I let the MOD know and told him I did not want anything comped or gratis but that he should know of our poor experience. He thanked me and that was that. Summary, neat place, surly waiter, small drinks and subpar food and an underwhelming manger on duty.

The quest for good Cuban food in Richmond does not end here. The decor was nice, I suppose, but for people like me who have first world problems like "the lack of indoor climate control is making me sweat," the venue was not good enough. However, my BF quite correctly pointed out that it was muggy and hot not because we were dining al fresco, but because we were sitting right next to the kitchen, which further begs the question: whyyy?!?!? Anyway, the food. We split the Taste of Havana entree because at $20, I couldn't bear to order anything else. The dish was alright...it left much to be desired. It was a sampler plate of pork, beef, beans and rice, and two pieces of plaintain. Definitely not enough food (and not tasty enough food) to justify such a price.

I have actually never been for dinner so, I cannot really comment on their dinner food but... I have been several times for happy hours and love Havana 59 for: 1) Open air bar area. The windows open completely up, garage door style and you can sit at a table right by the bustling, somewhat foreign-land-looking farmer's market area in Shockhoe Bottom. 2) You can buy and smoke cigars in the bar area. Some patrons certainly must hate this part, but with the open air style and good ventilation, I hope it is not too annoying. As a cigar lover, this is one of my favorite parts. And the smell of good cigar smoke must add to the ambiance, right? 3) The decor and interior style. Faux palm trees and Christmas style lights indoors. Need I say more? 4) Friendly, prompt, and laid back service. No offense Richmond, but servers down here seem to be either too slow and forgetful, or too overbearing. My experiences at Havana 59 have found the service perfectly appropriate as far as attention and efficiency. 5) Great prices for happy hour. Very affordable specials, including $4 mojitos and glasses of Spanish wine, very reasonably priced and unique appetizers. Try the calamari - different and delicious (and CHEAP). Cannot speak on the dinner but I would imagine it is awesome as well. I take all my out of town friends here for drinks when they visit.

The braised short rib dish, WOW. I was very happy with my meal at Havana 59. It can be slightly pricey, but definitely worth it for a nice night out. Sometimes they even offer a Groupon or LivingSocial, which is a great reason to give it a try.

This place cam highly recommended but our hotel's bartender so a group of us went out for dinner there. Walking in I thought "wow this place is really cool" because the style is so unique. Unfortunately aside from our very friendly and capable waiter that was the best part of the visit. The mojito was OK - needed a bit more kick, but points for clearly not being made from a mix. I ordered the pork medallions appetizer and it too was just OK. The paella I got for dinner was pretty good, but no one else in my group really enjoyed their food. Overall for the money this experience was a bit of a letdown, especially for the price. Three stars is probably just about right.

It pains me to give so few stars to such a great location. I love the several rooftop decks, the open seating, the cool bar area, the cards on the table and that is where the love stops. I've been here 3 times now and every time I want to love it. And every time I leave disappointed. The food is bland and the most recent time I went, avocado was listed as part of my meal, it didn't come out with it, I requested it and was told "it would be extra," seriously? Anyways, turns out they didn't have any left. I find it strange that a restaurant such as this, ran out of avocado? The concept of "go get some" comes to mind, but hey, whatever.

Me and my lady stumbled upon this place looking for something different. Once we stepped in, the hostess greeted us and we were informed that if we want to be seated in the non smoking section it will be a one hour wait (which we later found out that was not true because other people were seated within minutes) so we decided to give it a try and get a table in the smoking section, which wasn't too bad, just very smelly (everyone is smoking cigars, to which i am ok but NOT when I'm eating). The decor was very nice with a lot of character, actually i was impressed by the work they put into it. The menu had nice selections of foods and the drink menu had everything you might wish for, but what i find weird is the fact that the drinks don't have prices listed, you have to ask the waiter for the price. I started by ordering a Mojito, which was strong enough, well balanced and served in a pint glass. A good deal for $6.50 I ordered the Coastal Paella and the lady ordered the roasted Half Chicken. I can tell you that she made the right choice. The Paella was a bad choice. The rice was way overcooked - almost mushy, the shrimp was boiled till it got killed 5 times and the chicken was like rubber. Oh not to mention the mussels! One of them was spoiled and the others were overcooked! If i pay $25 for a dish, which i believe is overpriced for this restaurant i expect to get a good prepared dish, not something thrown in a plate and called Entree! On the other hand the Roasted Chicken was good. The rice that came with it was overcooked and the green beans were kinda tasty. One thing that i have to mention is the promotion they have (or had at the time of my visit). If you check in with Yelp! and order two entrees you can pick a dessert for free. Well that didn't work for me! I was told that he can't use the promo for me, plain and simple! To make it fair i give two stars because i liked the ambiance and i would go back only to have a drink and enjoy a cigar with a group of friends.

Went there with the planning committee for our 10yr reunion since we are looking to have our event there. The staff was very helpful with info and what to do for our event. The mojito's were AWESOME, the happy hour specials GREAT, the food was not stellar but not horrible. Like others the cost was a bit much for what you are getting.

If you could eat the looks of a restaurant you'd come here... But you can't, and the food is just average. I seriously am a huge fan of the look and feel of this venue. It just really fits of the image I have of a 1950's Havana. However, I don't go to restaurants for the look and feel. I go for the food. We ordered the Taste of Habana (not Havana but Habana) and it was average at best. It consisted of ropa vieja which was good, fried plantains that were undercooked, moros and cristianos that were dry, and another beef dish that was so unforgettable that I can't remember what it was. Come on Havana 59, step your game up! Get some food to match that great decor and style you have going on. You're like a super hot girl with no personality, sure I would tap that once but I would never go back because there is no substance behind those looks.

This place is about the atmosphere. We went on a Friday evening around 6 and sat in the downstairs bar area. They had the side opened up to the patio so it felt like we were sitting outside. My boyfriend wanted to go somewhere to have a drink and a cigar and this was the perfect place. Make sure you bring your own cigar as they can get expensive. There is a great selection of bottled beers and liquor. They didn't have any draft beers though, but it didn't seem to bother anyone. Everyone seemed to be ordering Mojitos anyways. The bartenders were friendly and the service was top-notch. As for the food I was informed by one of the bartenders that they are redoing the entire menu and adding more steak options. I can't wait to go back to try out the new menu.

Plaintains are exotic food to me. I'm a traditionalist. If it looks like a banana, it should be a banana. I've been won over by the food here. I like their fried plantain chips. I've heard of steaks so tender that they melt in your mouth. Now, thanks to this place, I've eaten several. I'm a beer & nachoes guys, so I can't weigh in on the skill of the bartenders. I can believe the reputation, though, everything is made fresh. And the nachoes are good.

"Am I still in Richmond?" That's exactly how I felt after entering Havana 59 for the first time. What a wonderful place for drinks! I'll have to come back another time for dinner but if the food is half as good as their drinks, then this place is a total winner. The ambiance was just amazing. Where else can you sit next to a palm tree and play cards while drinking a mojito? Loved it. Can't wait to try the food.

I moved to Richmond from the Tampa Bay area, where I fell in love with Cuban food. This is a really fun and funky place, and I love the open-air walls that look out over the farmer's market and 17th street. This is one of the few places in town I can get some black bean soup, ropa vieja or fried plantains, but I wish they had a real Cuban sandwich on the menu too. The food is not as authentic as the Mojito's are. Sometimes the cigar smoke will bother me if there are a lot of patrons puffing away, even with the open walls and ceiling fans, but it's still one of RIchmond's most original restaurants.

The atmosphere was fun and unique. We enjoyed our drinks and service. The outside seating was quite lovely. It was rather too hot and crowded, but I guess that really comes as a compliment. The postcards and free postage is such a fun surprise.

I am slightly disappointed by my Havanna 59 experience. I was really expecting so much more. First, I arrived at the restaurant at 6:00 on a Friday evening without a reservation. Big Mistake! I should have called ahead and made a reservation. Since there was no room in the dining area, I had to sit at the bar. Second, I ordered the roasted chicken meal with plantains on the side and did not like my meal. Third, the meal was over priced $24 was my total. ($24 is wayy too much for food I didn't like.) The plaintains were good though and I LOVE plaintains! (haha.) I heard this place had the Mojitos, although I can't confirm that because I didn't try it. I rate this place a 3 because I think it would be a nice spot to hang out and grab drinks on a Friday evening (but I'd eat a meal first before I come here).

I've been here at least half a dozen times before. And everytime has been a blast, so I expected the same. And I wanted to be able to write a great yelp...I really did. But it just didn't happen...until the end of the night. SERVICE: 2 stars Had a reservation at 6:15 for 6 people. When we arrived, there were only 4 of us, but we were seated immediately at a (small) table (uncomfortably) close to another party of 6 where the roof dripped onto 1 corner of our table. It was pointed out to the waitress, who shrugged it off and moved us to a (uncomfortably small) booth. 20 minutes passed before anyone even attempted to put something over the puddle. We were then approached by the manager to take our order (who was doubling as a server apparently because it was busier than usual). We pointed out the puddle, and inquired what to do with the remainder of our party since our reservation was for 6, and the 4 of us were seated in a booth for 2 1/2. "Well, we really don't have anywhere else to move you. We can seat them behind you if we have to." Thanks for (not) caring, Mr. Manager. His service throughout most of our meal was mediocre, but it (seemingly) got better the more we drank. Our servers switched on us, we went from the Manager to Mary, and she was fantastic. Her attitude and demeanor turned the entire experience from sketchy to wonderful. DRINKS: 4 stars I ordered the Mojito to start, which was OK, but didn't really pack the punch I was expecting. I soon moved to the house Margarita, which was fantastic!! By the suggestion of our (new) server Mary (guess the Manager was tired of us complaining about the roof leaking), I should have started with this. Made with silver tequila, fresh lime juice, and Gran Marnier, it was so refreshing and good. I topped all that off (I know...lush) with a few shots of 70-year Don Julio, compliments of the in-house tequila/cigar tasting. FOOD: 3 stars I also had the Coconut Shrimp and the Calamari. The shrimp was really good, crispy, and the mango sauce was delicious. The calamari has a good flavor, and the spicy sauce was definitely pleasing to the palate, but it was droopy. By droopy, I mean not the crisp, crunchy calamari I'm used to. I was expecting a consistency similar to onion rings. These were more along the lines of sauteed onions, with a thick batter on them. But all in all, the food was very good. The atmosphere is great, the waiters are (usually) bubbly and helpful, but maybe because I went in the middle of a huge downpour that had everyone's mood in the gutter. I will go back...when the sun is shining and the roof is not leaking.

Excellent food. Had ceviche, and pork tenderloin with plantains and red beans and rice. Great wait staff (little stiff though). However, went to the cigar bar later that same night, which was a lot of fun. And let's face it, not many decent cigar bars left, it seems.

The place to go for happy hour in the Bottom. Mojitos! Finger Food! Cigar Bar! This place has it all, with an extra helping of old world cuban ambience. Nice Weather? Sit on the upstairs open air patio, or enjoy the breeze coming in through the huge open windows near the bar. Craving something special for dinner? You will always find something new and exciting to try on their menu of cuban specialties. Can you tell I'm a fan?

I went down to Richmond with a couple of friends to meet up with the Richmond cigar club for one of their get togethers last weekend. Their gathering spot is here at Havana 59. I must say, I rather liked this spot. It's situated in a "farmer's market" district of Richmond. The area appears to be lined with a few bars and restaurants and such. It's a pretty cool area. Upon walking into Havana, I pretty much liked the place right away. There is the restaurant side to the right and the bar side to the left. The bar side has a door and is a separated space, so smoking is allowed there. During nice weather they open up the front windows and make the whole place open air, so to speak. I didn't have dinner here, so I cannot speak for the food. Although a few people in our group got the coconut shrimp which they said were outstanding. The drink menu, though, is great. They have a nice list of mixed drinks (including mojitos) and a nice list of beers, including some local microbrews. The wait staff is excellent... very attentive and friendly. Our waitress took the time to learn all of our names and referred to us by name when we called her over or needed more drinks, etc. And this place can get rather busy, so I was impressed by that. The whole place has a great embience; everyone is very friendly (note the sweet semicolon usage). At the end of the night, I was sad to leave this place. I definitely look forward to coming back here again in the future. This time I will definitely try some of the food. Besides, it's cigar friendly!!! Can't beat that!

This is a great restaurant, with a very charming ambiance. The food is excellent (I had the Taste of Havana sampler). The neighborhood looks cool, although I did not see much detail - it was a night visit. There is everything to like about this place and the prices are just this side of right. Big tip of the hat to my friend Charles, who told me about Havana 59 two years ago.

Havana 59 does a fantastic job of making one feel like they are entering into a genuine pre Castro building in old Havana. Crumbling plaster, strings of lights, exotic palms, and signage depicting the era all transport you right back to the Havana of Lucy and Ricky! The designers did an incredible job of capturing what an authentic Cuban building might look like. I guess this is as close as it gets, especially in a Southern city so far away from the real Havana. I have been to a few mixers here so will just comment on the bar service and facility. The restaurant itself is pretty cool due to the fact that there are multiple levels. The top most being an outdoor smoking terrace with an adjoining private dining space. Walk down another level and there is another huge terrace overlooking the Farmer's Market, a great place to enjoy a cocktail with friends on a balmy night. Also on this level is a full service bar and some cocktail tables both in and outside. The first floor is populated by a bar at the far end and booths and tables in a warm medium wood fill out the rest of the space. Most of the first floor can be opened to the sidewalk further enhancing the authentic feel of the space. The issue I have here is that this is a cigar smoking destination and the first floor is mostly restaurant, therefore if you don't like the smell of stogies, you would have a hard time enjoying yourself here.....just the way it is. Menu can be pricey for seafood entrees as well.

GREAT bar, adequate restaurant. Havana's atmosphere is fantastic, with a consistent and well done theme. The downstairs opens to the street and the upstairs is a truly incredible breezy patio. If you want a great mojito, a satisfying cigar, and a great environment, head to Havana. The problem is that the food, while never bad, is never impressive. Honestly, it's such mediocre food I'm torn about awarding four stars. It's properly a 3 star place promoted by the many, many great times I've had here. There isn't a great deal more to say about the place. Make it a part of your evening out downtown, but eat elsewhere.

Food? I don't know about the food, but I do know that this place has a fantastic bar. High-end rum, whiskey, whisky, tequila, and gin abound alongside a small but quality selection of brews and wine. The service was prompt and friendly and we had a nice little discussion with our barkeep about the pros and cons of various spirits distilled from molasses. Their cigar prices are, naturally, on the high end, so you really should bring your own as opposed to buying on site. However, all cigar bars have high prices on their stogies, so that's not really a knock against them. Yes, this is a nice spot for a sip or two.

Havana 59 has good food, but it is most definitely not Cuban. The food, though of good quality, is not outstanding. The decor and ambience, however, is excellent. If you want to get drinks with a few people (which I did once), it is an excellent spot. The food fare is generally well-prepared but nothing really stands out: pizzas and mussels were pretty good, though highly non-Cuban. The Salmon was of good quality but very bland, which accompanied by equally bland vegetables was just a very healthy choice. Perhaps it is my choice of Cuban food in the first place that lacked judgment. If this is the best Cuban restaurant in Richmond, then I would rather go to other Cuban hotspots (Miami, LA, New York) to get this kind of food.

Wandered down here after realizing the Tobacco Company.....Did not allow smoking. Weird but ok. I give this place 5 stars for atmosphere, it literally feels like your in cuba, their pro cigar smoking atmosphere, make me happy that there is still such a glorious land where I can exhibit my freedom, and where non-smokers can still exhibit their freedom to choose smoking and non-smoking. However, I ordered a margarita, that upon consuming it, left much to be desired in terms of Alcohol content, and the second round, with request for a double shot, proved mediocre as well. I did not try the food, but for a restaurant with smoking, live music at night, and a massive bar, I was expecting a good drink. Also the drink was very pricey, coming in at $10 for the single shot margarita, and $14 for the double shot with tax and tip, especially with them being so dry. Well, you can smoke.

I've had Cuban food in Miami as well as back home in Michigan and I can honestly say that this is the best I've ever had. The service was phenomenal as was the food. The only downside was that it was a little pricey (15-20$ per dish) but it is worth it. Definitely try the black bean soup as a side!

Many of my fellow Yelpers like to review restaurants by rating the individual components of the dining experience (food, service, atmosphere, etc.), a device that I have avoided until now. But for Havana '59, I feel it's necessary because one overall rating doesn't really do justice to the place - the restaurant deserves high marks for some things, and relatively low ones for others. DÉCOR: 5 stars. Simply put, Havana '59 is a gorgeous restaurant. Easily the most beautiful in Richmond; quite possibly the most gorgeous I've ever been to. The massive open windows, the stone floors, everything right down to the faux-newspaper clippings in the restroom is of the highest taste - but not at all stuffy. Hats off to the architect and the decorator. FOOD: 3 stars. The food tastes good enough, but it doesn't really knock you off your feet... VALUE: 2 stars ...which is a problem, considering how expensive everything is. I don't mind spending extra for a terrific meal, but paying high prices for merely decent food is pretty lame. SERVICE: 4 stars. Polite and efficient. Another reviewer said the service is good, but not in a kiss-ass way. That's about right. AUTHENTICITY: 2 stars. I have to set the record straight because so many other reviewers have been raving bout how this restaurant brings you back in time to 1950's Cuba. Sure, there's a lot of Cuban food on the menu, and yes, much of the décor feels right, but there are plenty of blunders too. The first three entrees on the menu at this "authentic" Cuban restaurant are CHILEAN sea bass, TASMANIAN salmon, and HAWAIIAN tuna. Umm... what? And which Cuban artist was it who painted the Mona Lisa? And maybe I'm being unreasonable now, but it's hard to feel like you're in 1950's Cuba when you're being waited on by white American hipsters. FUN: 5 stars. It is a blast hanging out here. Everyone seems to be having a great time; there's an undeniable energy; and there are decks of cards on each and every table! Giving all these factors equal weight, my overall rating comes to... gah! 3.5 stars. So I'm rounding down to three, to bring the combined Yelp rating down slightly where I think it belongs. Bottom line: I would definitely recommend coming here to drink. You might want to eat somewhere else though.

A fun spot with great atmosphere, strong mojitos, fabulous food, and strong mojitos (see what I mean??) I've been here twice in the last few months when in Richmond on business. You cannot come here and NOT have a mojito - trust me. Appetizers are generous and very tasty - I had the tuna ceviche both visits - delicious. First visit featured grouper for dinner, and I enjoyed the ribeye on my most recent visit. The staff is friendly and they care that you enjoy yourself. They offer an ample wine list, both by the glass and by the bottle, but a bit pricey at $8 per glass IMHO. Havana 59 offers first class food in a casual atmosphere. When the windows are opened up you almost feel like you are in the Caribbean. You will see people in business suits and you will see people in shorts. It's that kind of place.

Had a great Friday evening dinner here after Red White and Brew. Our party was seated on the palm adorned rooftop deck which is an amazing place to eat and drink when the weather is nice. Our waitress who was attentive and friendly stated that they were out of most of their microbrew selection so I started out with a Mojito and the crispy cuban sandwich springroll with mustard sauce as an appetizer. The roll was delicious but it was a pretty small portion. For my entree I ordered the roasted chicken (they were out of tamales). It was a chicken breast smothered in a rich and pleasantly spicy orange sauce with jasmine rice and sauteed vegetables. This was quite delicious as well. We settled our tab upstairs and went down to the 1st floor main bar where smoking is now allowed but that didn't become an issue thanks to Havana's wide open front wall. At the bar I came to find out they actually did have most of the beers the waitress upstairs had thought they were out of and the bartender was kind enough to give me a Dogfish Head on the house. All in all I had a great experience here. While I'm no Cuban cuisine connoisseur I know my tastebuds enjoyed what they had that evening and I look forward to heading back again on another pleasant summer evening. Mojitos -3 stars Food - 4 stars Wait Staff - 4 stars Ambiance - 5 stars

I first visited this restaurant on a recommendation from a colleague when he heard I was moving to Virginia. We live a little more than an hour from Richmond, but we were going up for a NASCAR race and met a friend the night before to try it out. It was amazing. The atmosphere really does makes you feel like you're back in time! The food is excellent, especially the paella. And don't miss the homemade daiquiri's and Sangria! Since our first visit we've had a point to spend a night in Richmond at least once a year so we can eat here. As an added bonus (well, bonus to some) the bar allows cigar smoking (and sells cigars in case you didn't bring your own) so after dinner you can relax with a cigar and after dinner drink.

Ok... LOVE THIS PLACE! Sorry for yelling. The atmosphere, the ambiance, the food, the drinks, the staff... well I'm sure you get the point. I have been to Havana 59 a few times and each time the food has been great and the service has been excellent. My favorite is the taste of Havana. 3 different kinds of Cuban style meats with black beans, rice and plantains. Very flavorful and a nice portion size. Last night I ventured off and had the grilled pork tenderloin with red beans and rice. It was excellent and tender. I also loved their calamari with the spicy sauce (I can't remember what they call it). You may want to make reservations if you are going with a few friends or it is after 7 on Friday or Saturday night when they have live music. After dinner it is really nice to have a dessert and enjoy a cigar. You can buy them there or bring your own. It is nice on a mild night because they open the sides... (like huge, glass garage doors) and the night air and atmosphere comes inside... Note to Cigar aficionados... the house cigar is enticing but is not good. Tried it twice and both had harsh flavor and a poor draw. Happy Hour each day is a nice deal but take note... On Fridays they extend the happy hour to 7:30 pm but the appetizers at half price stop at 6:30. It is important to remember this as the menu isn't clear and the staff may forget to remind you. What does that actually mean? Well your beef empanadas or whatever, go from $4 to $8. That can really add up if you're not careful.

We ventured into Havana 59 about 9 on Saturday night, restaurant was full, but seating was available in the 1st floor smoking section. My first visit & I didn't really know what to expect from that, but accepted the seating there rather than waiting 15-20 minutes for non-smoking. Cigars are encouraged here and my partner indulged. He commented that $8 was a decent price for a cigar purchased from the bar. We were seated at the back of the room, but I would have to say that with the windows open, the ventilation system is working very well and air quality was good. Not sure what "authentic Cuba" really looks like, but the faux 59 Cuba decor is well done and does give the diner an "out of Richmond" experience. I had a taste for coconut shrimp, alas Hill City Chop house has stopped making them, so came upon Havana by google search for my shrimp. Funny, after perusing the menu, we opted for the tamale of the day appetizer--chicken. I've eaten tamales all over the southwest, this was one of the best I've ever had. Perfectly prepared creamy corn masa outside, mildly spicy chicken inside and both distinguishably tasty (are they authentic to Cuba also? again, I don't know.) Sweetie had a peach daquiri, overly creamy for my taste and I had the caipirinha (authentic to Brazil, I think), tasty & a good kick. For entrees my partner chose Chilean Seabass "pan seared and served over Baby Bok-Choy, Red Beans and Rice, and topped with a Spicy Citrus-Chile Salsa". Spicy, they weren't kidding, delish YES! I had to stop him from licking his dish. I had the seafood paella, enough for two servings. Authentic Caribbean flavors with abundant shrimp, mussels, ham, fish and some of the best chirizo I've ever tasted. I did add a little siracha to it, but this dish is typically mildly flavored. Also well prepared & delish. Winding down the meal, I switched over to the "original" mojito, which arrived in a tall glass, generously supplied with rum & sweetie had the (authentically Cuban??) Irish coffee. Well, he's Irish...anyway, it was one of the best I've had in Richmond. The dessert offerings sounded marvelous, but I was already taking half of my order home in a box, so we skipped it. Our waiter was pretty attentive throughout the meal, but less so when we were waiting for the box and the check. Not his fault, I think, his tables seemed to be spread sporadically over both sides of the first floor. We agreed that the meal was superior, but if you want cheap eats this isn't for you. If you want well above average atmosphere, interesting people-watching, good vibe with your great food, I recommend. We'll be back.

Wow - Awesome place. Authentic, flavorful, and good service too boot. The server was very knowledgeable about the menu, drinks and had a passion to serve. She was quick with thoughtful recommendations and every one was spot on. I had the Old Havana Plate - three meets cooked three different ways, plantains, beans and rice. My colleague had Paella. Looked great. Only complaint was that they had no red sangria. I was able to talk the server into a taste of the white sangria. It wasn't my favorite. Alls well that ends well, my mojito was out of this world. Decor and atmosphere were very authentic. Love the check presenter. It was a post card with an additional flap. The post card was mailable. What a great advertising ploy. They only thing they could have done better would be add the stamp!

2.5 the food is not particularly Cuban....the food is not particularly good...however, the mojitos are lovely! and the terrace upstairs can be really pleasant in the evenings during warm weather. go for drinks, but skip the food. unless you are just having appetizers with drinks.

Love Havana 59! I've been in for drinks several times and they make the BEST caipirinha. I have only had dinner once, but I thought it was outstanding. I had the sea bass with some kind of chili sauce and it was so delicious! I love the open air feeling and it really help with the smoke. It's the only place where I feel like people really should be smoking...it just fits with the atmosphere. They have a deck of cards on each table and it is always fun to beat someone at a nice game of Speed:) I've always been lucky to find a spot to park in the market right outside for $5. Cool spot in my old hometown - I miss you Richmond!

The decor at Havana 59 is absolutely amazing and truly it's the only reason that they get two stars instead of just the one that they deserve for having good wait-staff. It brings you back to a time a place so vividly that it feels like you really could have been there. I give them 5/5 on this. However, the atmosphere is where it stops. Service is what you would expect (or should expect) at an upper tier restaurant, and while I realize that H59 is not a luxury establishment, it is nicer than your normal run of the mill sandwich place. I went for a nice birthday dinner with my parents (well,we were going to go to Richbrau, but there were closed.. on a Saturday. Really(?)). We got there at around 7:30 and were told that they would be unable to seat us becuase they had too many reservations starting at 8pm. The smoking section was available though. We decided that this was ok since there were huge windows (well garage doors, but they were open so you could only tell by looking up) and no one was smoking. The weather was nice, so this part wasn't too bad - just a note that might help you. Thus we were seated and ordered and a while later, were surprised. All together we had ordered a Fillet Mignon, Lamb Chops, and Swordfish. The Lamb Chops plate was the only one worth of being called a meal. All of the food ranged from ~$20-$26) and you could probably put the amount of food we received on a $20.00 bill. Not only were the portions tiny (I used to get happy meals bigger than this), but they were not even that tasty. The side items on the Fillet Mignon were mashed potatoes (bland) and mushrooms (maybe a 1/4 cup after being sautéed). Everything was drenched in this thick sauce, so you really only tasted that (which wasn't great). Basically for $20/plate + beverages/dessert (which I'd give a B- at best) we all felt like we needed to find another restaurant on the way home so that we could actually have dinner. I have heard that their drinks are great and perhaps this is what they are known for, but I really cannot comment on that as I was there only for dinner. Judging from that experience, I will not be visiting them again for a meal.

Disappointing. Living with great Cuban food and coffee in Miami may bias this review, but, on the other hand if you purport to be a Cuban restaurant you should at least have a few typical dishes on the menu, not to mention a prominent section with a list of the coffees (cortadito, cubano, cafe con leche, etc.). The outdoor seating on the 3rd floor was the real treasure in the lovely, old restored brick building. Great views and meeting place, so-so food,

This place is not bad for checking out the scene at happy hour. $3 mojitos are a pretty good deal even if they make them in large batches. We stayed for dinner one night and my dish was way too salty that I could not finish it. I'd like to see more variety in the menu as well. Being from Boston, I've gotten used to no smoking in bars so it's a big adjustment when someone next to you puffs cigar smoke into your face. They have a right to smoke there (even if I wish they didn't) so I won't say anything about that, but its just something I don't enjoy being around.

I just go for the mojitos and upstairs patio. Sadly to say, I have not tried any dishes there. I usually make a pit stop after my dinner to get a fresh mojito or a few to enjoy a relaxed night with friends. It's a cute place and they don't go lightly on the mint leaves and lime. Serious mojitos!

Love this place...it has that Miami appeal!! Great place for drinks...Mojito's are the best in Richmond by far. It would be great if they had a lounge area for live music/dancing.

The restaurant is quite large and has a great vibe. The upstairs rooftop patio offers a phenomenal view of downtown Richmond and historic Church Hill. The food is above average, but really nothing special. Their food does not taste particularly authentic, even down to the fried plantains, which just missed the mark. The steak was a quality cut of meat, but generic and not cuban. The ropa vieja tasted like nothing I've really had before (not in a good way), and this in comparison to the Cuban restaurants I'm used to in Florida. The restaurant is definitely upscale, and tries to add in some flair to their dishes. Unfortunately this more makes their food random and without a cohesive feel.

Totally thought I was somewhere other than Richmond when I was here. Beautiful old building, with an attached restaurant - although, the restaurant is 1/4 the size of the cigar bar, if that tells you anything. Great service, awesome location - well worth the visit.

I just wanted to add that you can smoke here, of course CIGARS!!! They have a new smoking area upstairs and if you have ever been upstairs its still the same, bar and table service. Half of the upstairs is outside and they told me that they are planning on putting heaters out there too but you can smoke inside or out there.. Smoke'em if you got'em!!

I ABSOLUTELY loved this place! Vibe- perfect and fitting. The broken pieces of wall and roughed up interior while faux completely emulates a Havana in '59 mood. From "old advertisements painted on brick walls" to the huge open windows with a warm summer breeze passing through, this restaurant truly makes you forget where you are for a minute... ...as you picture yourself in the back alley of an old apartment complex in cuba enjoying drinks, food and all the time in the world to relax. Then you snap out of it and realize your are in richmond down the street from your apartment and you have to walk the dogs in a few hours and return home, shit. Well i'll keep pretending for now... The food, music and atmosphere all work so nicely together. Our server Evan was friendly in a realistic way not a kiss ass way, educated about food and wine and very helpful. Drink: The margarita's and wonderful, I had prickley pear, not a choice i would ever chose but was the waiter's favorite so I was willing to try it. They are strong too and I'm glad I could enjoy it knowing I was walking home that night. The wine list surprisingly is very nice as well. You normally think of well thought out wine lists at french, italian, new american but typically hispanic and asian restaurants sometimes fall off the boat in this category. Havana 59 was spot on with a diversity of wines and some at tremendously fair prices. Food: First of all there is a tamale and ceviche of the day....who could ask for anything more! We had a lamb and eggplant tamale and tuna ceviche (actually done with less acid in a more hawaiin style so it won't cook the fish like a typical ceviche.) Evan let us know that the seafood is shipped fresh daily from Hawaii next day caught. It may not be local but still shows major quality and makes you more apt to shell out a few more bucks on a meal or at least a little less guilty when you do. The Cuban spring rolls are a must even if you are just there for drinks, please order them. My desert, was a pumpkin flan with a grilled pineapple, holy tamale was it good. At first I was thinking pumpkin in the summer...hmmm but yet again Evan talked me into it and it was so light and perfect. I came here with my boyfriend and mother and we all were just so pleased. I hope to come back for more food, drinking and Dance lessons on Wednesday night!

I haven't been to any others in Virginia, but this has to be the spot for Cuban food! (I don't know of any others actually....) This cute place has 3 floors that just make you feel like you are in Cuba or some other Caribbean hot spot. The interior has a nice cocktail lounge that would be pefect for a happy hour, and there was already a party out with severals seats at a table celebrating some type of ocassion. Our group was seated on the 2nd floor that sat underneath these neat string of light bulbs. It was a hot summer night and we had a touch of the breeze and the fan blowing near us. With the tropical greenery, it was easy to imagine being some place else. The mojitos are the drinks to have here, and they also make them flavored. The Coco Loco is like a freakin' orange creamsicle with alcohol. Yummy! The sangria ain't so bad either. We had the pork tenderloin appetizers and the avocado salsa and chips. They weren't all too impressive. There is also a 3rd floor which seems to be a more private patio, which would be great for a romantic moment with a special someone. I was disappointed with the whole ambiance and music that there weren't people dancing. It's a great chill spot to hang out with friends, where the music doesn't overwhelm conversations.

before my last visit, i would've given it 5 stars, but the last visit was a bit disappointing. my boyfriend & i went on a saturday night and had no problem getting a seat downstairs. it was a nice fall night & the giant window doors were open so that was really nice. the atmosphere is one of my favorites-SO cute & fun! I ordered a mojito which was delicious, but my entree, not so much. i ordered the paella and it was not nearly as good as it used to be. i've been there 3 or 4 times before in the past couple years and was really excited to go there again. My boyfriend ordered tuna steak and he said it was good. the paella, though, did not taste fresh. it was very fishy & dry like it was made that morning. i'm not giving up yet.....hopefully next time it will be back on it's a-game!

The mojitos are strong and the atmosphere is even better. It's the best during the summer when the windows are open. The music always gets you in the mood to dance!

We went here on a Saturday night and it was still fairly full at 930 but not ridiculously so. The bar was still going pretty strong though and it looked like a nice mixed crew of trendy/preppy and alternative types. But to the real point, the food was a-ma-zing! We started off with the pork tenderloin morsels and oysters on the half shell, yum and yum. The pork morsels kind of reminded me of chick-fil-a chicken tenders but that's alright with me. For meals, I had the grass fed fillet mignon with horseradish mashed potatoes and tons of sauteed mushrooms. It was cooked perfectly and so flavorful, great dish. The rest of the table had the paella, steak frites, and the salmon. Everyone loved their dishes. I tried the paella too and it had tons of seafood and flavor. For dessert we had the guava-lime cheesecake and the tres leches cake. Both great choices. The decor of the place was really cool too, they had clothes lines hanging from the ceilings and lots of little touches that made it feel authentic. They keep playing cards at the table too...just in case your date is unbearable ;)

What a good night in Havana. First, I have to admit that I was thrilled to find a bar that not only allowed cigar smoking but catered to it. If you're not a fan of smoke, the bar isn't for you. I visited on a Tuesday night and the bar was full of cigar smokers - I was in heaven. (note-the dining area is far removed from smoke, so don't let it stop you from visiting) After a enjoying a nice Ashton and a mojito, I tried a "A Taste of Old Habana" dinner. The food was very good, if not great. The meat combos were tender and well flavored. I've probably had Cuban food that was a bit better but this was certainly tasty. It wasn't cheap at $19.95 but I didn't think it overpriced either. The mojitos were very good as well. Not too sweet and loaded with fresh mint. I ate here in March, I'm sure that in the summer this place only gets better with it's open-air style. When I look at all Havana 59 has to offer - ambiance, good food, good service, cigars, and loads of style, it earns 5 stars in my book.
