This is one of my favorite places in the city. I've eaten the food many times, though most of my experience is ordering a sandwich or a burger; mainly for the truffle fries. I've never been disappointed by any of the sandwiches I've ordered, and I'll say that they probably have one of the better/best burgers in the city, but I don't know what it is about these fries; I can't have enough of them. What makes this one of my favorite places is the bar service, cocktails and the music. This place is one of the best hangs in Richmond. The mixed drinks are a little pricier than a regular beer bar, but nowhere near the cost of a big city, and the menu is extremely well thought out and well made. They have music in the back (and sometimes in the front) most nights of the week and it runs the gambit of interests, but it's always something cool. The place just has a really great energy about it. If you're looking for a good place to check out, especially if you're passing through Richmond, this should be at the top of the list!

Great job on the re-vamp, everything looks and tastes top notch. The French-Indo cuisine was exactly what the Fan & restaurant needed for their come-back. I can't wait to come try the other half of the menu - so many options. We tried each dessert - everybody had their own favorite but I recommend the Key Lime pie. So glad this establishment is still knocking out amazing food / drink / and music for RVA.

Review is based solely on the appetizers/drinks Came for a work function - pretty weird set up. Narrow restaurant in the front, raised kitchen, bar in the back with a stage and some tables. Didn't have a great selection of apps for us, and none were really good. Standard charcuterie plate but lacking good meats, overly salty meatballs, shrimp in a sweet tasting sauce with flimsy bacon (out of place here), truffle fries which were crispy and good but a tad salty, bread and pimiento (eh), and some really bad fried ravioli - these had a very dry/stale texture and the flavor was not memorable. Drinks were fine but the food wasn't good enough to bring me back

Balliceaux the Fan. Richmond, VA balliceauxrva.com Great social outlet. One of Richmond's first farm to fork restaurants in the original Bogart's location. Creative dishes and drinks, with unexpected retro razzle dazzle decor. Perfect for eating, drinking, dancing, and most recently, for brunching. Amazing square biscuit breakfast sandwiches that come with... wait for it...truffle fries! This is where I take people new to Richmond or returning to Richmond b/c the vibe is amazing and the food is always amazing. Try something different, try Balliceaux, Richmond. Live music almost every night Brunch Sundays only, for now.....

This is a review on the night/bar scene... more specifically, the guy who works the door on Friday and Saturday nights. He has something seriously wrong with him. He is the angriest, rudest, strangest doorman I've ever encountered. I've been twice in the last month, and both times I've seen him act so crazy and be so rude to customers that I would be embarrassed if I owned the bar and had him representing my establishment. He is the first person customers deal with when they arrive, and they will be lucky not to hear him snap and cuss at customers. It's bad when other employees have to apologize for the way he acts and say "he's crazy... don't worry about him", and when you over hear other customers talking about how rude he is. Anyone who reads this, and goes there on a weekend night, will know exactly who and what I am talking about.

There. Is. No. Parking. Anywhere. Trust me I've literally spent an hour trying to find it. Literally. There was none. None. It was 9 pm - 10 pm so I don't know why nothing, nothing was available. Just...No. Waste of a Saturday night trying to come here.

This review solely pertains to Balliceaux as a music venue. I understand that when you combine Friday nights + a popular RVA band, you're bound to experience a few hiccups i.e. delayed start time, crowds, slow service, etc., but I had a frustrating experience here: 1. They advertised on Facebook and on their sandwich board outside the door that the cover charge was $5, and thought it would be cute to up-charge at the last minute to $7 and blamed an employee for "messing up". $2 is obviously not breaking the bank, but it was false advertising = not cool. 2. The band didn't start up for over an hour because Balliceaux "over-sat" customers for dinner in the back room where bands are featured and didn't clear them out before the start time. As a result, customers waiting in line for the band were all corralled in one corner and had to fight their way to the bar and the poor, clearly irritated employees had to carry drinks/food through unnecessary swarms of people. Balliceaux should have re-directed customers elsewhere to reduce the congestion. With that being said, I'll continue to frequent Balliceaux for their music events due to the variety of artists they feature, just hope they have a more organized set-up during a busy night.

The drinks are AMAZING. The bartenders really know what they're doing. I can't remember what drink I had, but if you ask them for a drink with rosemary in it, I'm sure they would know what you're talking about. I didn't experience any food except for the edamame hummus platter, which had sprouts, pickled onion, edamame hummus, and pita bread. Great flavor! If I go back for an actual meal, I'll definitely update my review. My friend did get the burger and said it was excellent.

I went to Balliceaux last night with a group of 6 with a reservation. We ended up still having to wait about 30-40 minutes to get our table, but the hostess gave us a heads up and we had plenty of room at the bar and no problem getting drinks. (ONLY downside of the entire evening.) Our waiter was awesome - had great recommendations, took his time with us, was funny, light-hearted. Fun guy. Two of us got the chicken sandwich with the avocado sauce, one person got the meatloaf sandwich, and all three guys got the burger - but one got brie, one got American, and one got blue cheese. Everyone raved about their meals. The buns were perfectly toasted, the burgers and chicken had the perfect grill taste and right amount of char to them. Both the truffle fries and the sweet potato fries were great - normally I'm 100% on sweet potato fries when given the choice, but when I go back I'll actually get the truffle fries. We also got the cornmeal fried oysters - they weren't the BEST fried oysters I've had, but they were really good and had a nice little greens/vinaigrette "relish" with them. Overall, awesome time and awesome food.

Brunch is perhaps my favorite thing to do on a Sunday. Balliceaux has a hippie feel to it that's both clean and unique with its high ceilings and windows that let in the natural sunlight (ah...reminds me of sunny California). Inside, you'll find comfy booths and plenty of space with no need to reserve ahead of time. Everything looks delicious on the menu with the specials equally enticing (think melted brie on a spinach omelet). Overall, good quality food with attentive service. My pick: Surry Sausage plate ($10): a delicious biscuit smothered with perfectly seasoned country gravy and pieces of delectable sausage that is simply to-die-for. I can't describe the taste but it was truly unique. Add on the eggs, and I was in brunch heaven. Coffee: refillable and well-brewed. Free parking is easy to find along Lombardy St. on a Sunday morning. I'll have to make my way back for some of those delicious truffle fries everyone's raving about.

We live around the corner from Balliceaux so we eat there frequently. We have never had anything but fantastic meals, and we have had everything on the menu. The service is quick, friendly and knowledgeable. Cocktails are full and genuine. Wine list is good. Brunch there includes some fried potatoes that are the best. The food is creative, fresh and tasty with daily specials. The fried oysters app-the best. Dessert-the bread pudding a la mode. When in doubt get the burger with the truffle fries; when not in doubt and feeling indulgent get the steak with the potatoes au gratin.

This review is only for Balliceaux as a bar. Went out with a couple friends on Friday night. Nice interior, cool dance area in the back, and great shots however what killed it for us were the bouncers outside. They were rude to us for no reason. We went outside for a cigarette and when we asked where we could keep our beer since it wasn't allowed outside, the bouncers said we were wasting their time, and then made snide comments about my friends and insulting us. While outside we also witnessed them being rude to other customers that were also standing outside. I guess it makes them feel better about having a crappy job when they are making fun of everyone. Very unprofessional. These loser 50 year old bouncers would be a lot happier getting a real job. I won't be coming back again because of the terrible customer service.

The place: I stopped by here to have a light chill dinner. Surprisingly, there was a music event going on where 26 acts or so were performing from 4-10pm( more on that in a bit). The decor is dark rustic meets country vibe. When you first walk in there are booths on the right and left side along the walls and straight ahead is the bar. The bar is very small with minimal seating. They have a back area that has more seating and another bar...also, that's where they do most of their performances for bands etc. The lighting is low with candles scattered around. The food: Normally I don't eat here. I usually come for a drink - hence why I haven't done a review until now. My review will not be full on because I came during the event : classical revolution?! (Can't remember if that's the name). It happens every month or so here / it's live music in the back area and this time they had a buffet style set up for $10 . The menu included salad, fried cauliflower, falafel, meatballs, macaroni, some great desserts etc. It wasn't your typical buffet food- it was decent and good eats. Next time, I hope to be able to indulge in the actual menu and I'll update my review on specific items on the menu. Overall: The place is very cozy and the staff was nice. The bartenders were friendly and helpful. The classical music was a great way to end the weekend on a Sunday! They have other music on other days and it's always a treat IMO. I think this place is a good spot to have on your radar for a nice chill evening or meal with a date or friends. I would definitely recommend this place! I would always suggest that you check the website prior to coming so you know what events/music are planned etc for that day, if any.

My fiance and I came here for a burger night because we like to try new gourmet burgers. We ordered an appetizer of fried oysters, I got a kimchi burger, and a Fizzy Lizzy drink. The food was mostly excellent. I don't normally enjoy raw oysters but I really liked the fried oysters. The sauce on the oysters was good as well. The drink was inventive and fun to try. The flavors in the burger were very authentic and fit together very nicely. I knocked off a star because I enjoy a larger juicy burger and fancier bread on my gourmet burgers. These had very thin patties and standard burger buns. The price was cheaper, though, so it might be a tradeoff that some are willing to make. The truffle oil on the fries was a nice touch, although they used a bit of a heavy hand. The atmosphere was dark and intimate, upscale yet urban. We went during a slower night so the owner (I think?) came around to talk to us. Overall a nice experience.

I planned my husband's 30th birthday at Balliceaux. It was the most flexible, affordable, and laid back place to plan a party. The vibe was sophisticated and sexy and the drinks/food were amazing! I loved watching the bartender make the classics and put love and care into them. They also have kept a good relationship. I reach out to Casie everyone once in awhile to let me know what's happening that week at Balliceaux. Thanks so much guys!!

So if you're stalking my post... I mean enjoying my posts you know I am a burger chick. I'm all about that burger, bout that burger, with french fries. So... of course that is what I dined on this night. Now... rewind, back it up, let's bring it on back.... the parking... SUCKS donkey sticks, peppermint patty sticks, what ever you don't like to suck that's what it is sucking on. It is horrendous. We drove around for 30 mins or so looking for a parking space, pulling into a parking space only to realize we couldn't park there. So anyway I only kept trying because I drove 30 freakin miles to get there and a friend was playing in a band. Good thing that burger was on point or I may have been one feisty heifer. Just saying! Anywho the burger was good, the customer service was divine, and the band was entertaining the energy out of everyone. So a nice spot to go if you want to hang with friends or even solo... I don't judge and I'm sure they don't either... as long as you pay your tab. Oh and be prepared to pay an extra fee to take part in the musical experience in the back of the restaurant. There is generally a cover charge that is not included in your meal and/or drink cost.

I've had nothing but exceptional service here. From the bar, to dinner, to large private parties in the back, the staff and product are great. In addition to the quality meals and staff, it's a great place to spend a Friday or Saturday night. If you live in or around the Fan but don't want to feel like you're slumming it with a bunch of bros and 19 year old girls w/ fake IDs, I recommend Balliceaux. The vibe in the front the the bar is relaxed and conducive to some nice, beverage driven conversation. The back of the bar almost always has a DJ or band playing, which is almost always a good time. Check this place out.

Balliceaux's remarkable craft cocktails and almost nightly offering of live music make it one of Richmond's best spots for nightlife. This is one of the few bars in Richmond that draws a cross section of crowds - hipsters, VCU students, professionals, and older couples alike. We have enjoyed many late night drinks at the front bar, where you can easily hear the music from the back room. If you want to dance, pay the cover and join the crowd in the back room, where you'll feel like you've left Richmond for the night. The only downsides are lack of nearby parking and the front bar sometimes being slow, simply because they are so attentive to detail with every cocktail they make. Overall, Balliceaux is hands down one of my favorite spots in the city.

We visited Balliceaux with some friends for a birthday dinner/outing a few weekends ago. It's a really nice place with an upbeat, casual, trendy vibe. The food on the other hand was not what I expected. I ordered the pork belly wrapped in bacon and man was this thing tough, fatty and bland. My wife had the Tuna dinner and that was a little better but not for the price. Both portions were small, not tiny, but definitely small. Our friends are not the adventous type so they ordered the bugers, which they enjoyed, and they immediately offered to share their fries once they saw our meals (note to self, always go to dinner with good friends).

Have to give it four stars because 1) the interior is great. The furniture, the lighting and overall vibe is interesting and pretty. 2) Intriguing cocktail list. Had the Tom Yum Yum which is vodka and lemongrass and it's the perfect summer drink. 3) Truffle fries. They were as advertised. Had the charcuterie and cheese and the cheese were good, the meat (duck proscuitto, and pork rillette) was not good, and the fixings (jalepeno jam, house ground stone mustard, etc) were fab. The old man had the short ribs, which he loved. I thought they were good, but not great. I had the burger which I asked for medium (it was well) and so salty I couldn't really eat it (I even took the bacon off). But I can't hate on a place for a bad burger. I liked everything else about it and will be back to try more!

I've been here a couple times now, and this place never disappoints. Fries (both truffle and sweet potato), are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Plus, you can never go wrong with too much truffle oil. The burger is very well proportioned, great beef, fresh and large tomatoes, grilled onion and pickles, and a strong bun keeping it all together. My only complaint would be that they overcook the meat a bit, so the medium rare can often feel like a medium. Most recently I tried their shrimp and scallop dish, which were both very fresh. Their cocktails are inventive and masterfully crafted. Even something sounds weird, like bacon infused rye, dont be afraid to give it a try.

Two words: truffle oil!! This place really understands the importance of truffle oil and how it makes the simplest of things (fries) and makes them outstanding. I could eat the curry cauliflower everyday of my life. The drinks are great and they have a happy hour during the week. It is a cool spot to catch a show any day of the week.

Contemporary Metropolitan Restaurant & Bar My friend was raving out this place and so we went for a drink. Balliceaux is impressive inside and out. From outside you can see down the front half of the restaurant through their floor to ceiling window. Inside, they have a mix of booths, tables and a small bar. My friend and I sat at the bar. The bartender really engaged us and made a special drink for my friend. Their turkey, avocado, and brie sandwich was too good to resist and came with an order of truffle fries ($12). The sandwich was buttered up, spicy, and creamy. The fries were perfectly crisp. Their house red was fine. This is a great place to get drinks with friends or dinner for two. Ambiance & Service 5/5 Food 5/5, Wine 2/5 Value 5/5

This was a perfect spot to begin our long weekend in Richmond with friends and delicious food. The truffle fries are pretty good but they are fried potatoes, people. I'm trying to limit my carbs and deciding between a drink and fries....well, I think you know which way I will go. I did enjoy the 5 or 6 I had...or 11 or 12....or maybe I ate half the order. It's difficult to remember because I was sipping a most fantastic "Intimate Secretary" consisting of Finlandia grapefruit vodka with rosemary syrup, fresh lime & club soda. My char grilled steak and frites (uh, more potatoes and truffle oil...I have no willpower) paired with a healthy helping of house bacon creamed spinach was magnificent. I was very curious about the Tandoori Chick Pea and Cauliflower Salad and inquired of our lovely server if she might just accidentally drop some on my plate. When my steak arrived, one small delectable cauliflower chunk was delivered on a separate plate. On this Thursday night, the chef hung up his apron and mosied upstairs to entertain everyone as a DJ. Impressive. Having the versatility to provide amazing music to someone's tummy and ears is a healthy form of job security.

Tried Balliceaux for the first time last week and it was an incredible meal!! I do agree with Brian C.'s review on here that it IS a very cool place for Richmond. Maybe too cool. The menu is upscale, trendy, but also really well thought out and creative. The interior is rustic, but also kind of urban. Beautiful decor. (bathroom was nice too!). And while it did remind me of a restaurant/bar I'd find in Williamsburg or elsewhere in Brooklyn, I am not sure I would call it "hipster" because A) the servers were actually nice and not snobby and B) there was a wide age range in attendance. I was there on a Friday evening around 10 eating dinner. It wasn't very busy at all. Kind of quiet, actually. There were kids coming in to go to the back room and hear music, but in the dining room where I was, most people eating were my parent's age. Not a bad thing, just something I noticed. It kind of made me wonder who this place is trying to appeal to? I started with the cotton candy mojito, which the server pours over cotton candy, and you watch it dissolve (nice detail). I thought $14 was a little much, but it was delicious. For my meal, I got a special: Jalepeno corn stuffed chicken leg over plantain mash and a side of sautéed squash and peppers. Okay. Never have I experienced such an interesting, flavorful meal. Yes, there was a lot going on, but I loved every bit of it! The chicken was cooked perfectly - juicy and tender. The corn stuffing had a nice kick to it. The mash was sweet compliment. If they have this as a special again, I can not recommend it enough! I'm curious about their brunch and will definitely be back!

this review is for the place as a bar (in evening), mostly college age or 20-something hipster-alternative type crowd.. pretty good selection of wines by bottle or glass, some interesting cocktails (their dark& stormy was definitely heavy on the ginger).. ordering is a bit chaotic, in the front area they have a bunch of booths abd tables but at night when the place is a bar rather than a restaurant you have to order all drinks at the bar, there are no servers on the floor which is odd.. there are just 2 single person restrooms which also may be inadequate if they are really crowded I suppose. Street parking in a neighborhood where it can take a little while to find a spot.

This place has a mix of trendy and eclectic decor and has a really fun vibe. Our server was amiable, attentive, and really personable. Nothing spectacular about their burgers but the truffle fries did have nice flavor and weren't too overpowering. I think this place is a nice, intimate spot to grab a couple of cocktails with friends. Food: 3 Value: 3 Service: 4 Overall: 3

Came here around 11:00 PM on a Saturday so we didn't dine. ~ No dress code really. I came in a tank and jeans. From the outside, Balliceaux looks unassuming and perhaps even crappy. Upon entry wowwww. It's surprisingly nice! Ample restaurant seating in the front and a nice dark dance floor in the back. + nice atmosphere and decor + nice looking, young crowd, nothing trashy + girls I was with didn't feel creeped on + strooong drinks. Yikes. + not crowded, plenty of dancing space - not enough bathrooms - DJ that night kind of sucked hard. Spun funky music but never let a song go on longer than 2 minutes and skipped the climax of most songs. big big big big big -. I know I usually complain about DJs but this guy actually was not very good and couldn't read the crowd for his life. - Sound system got messed up in the back so the music cut for a good 10 minutes. Awkward. People have to actually talk to each other? We didn't stay very long but with better music, I could see myself staying here for a long time and having a great time. 3.5 overall

Truffle fries. Oh man, the truffle fries. Amazing. So. Delicious. So much so that clearly I can't form a complete sentence. As I attempt to type, all that keeps running through my head is this little ditty: Truffle fries are in the hoouuuse tonight. Everybody just have some truffle fries. And they gonna make your taaaastebuds sing. Everybody just have some truffle fries. Truffle fries are in the hoouuuse tonight. Everybody just have some truffle fres. And they gonna make your taaaastebuds sing. We just wanna see ya... Eat them! Everyday I'm truf-f-f-ling. .... ok I think I'm ready to write. I'm not even a huge french fry person, so the fact that I can't get these truffle fries out of my mind really says something. We stopped in for drinks on Friday and weren't actually planning to order food. But of course once the drinks started flowing, we got a little hungry. Plus the fact that I hadn't yet eaten din added to my sudden hunger and need for a snack. Although tons of menu items looked appealing, we just yearned for a few small bites so 4 of us split the truffle fries and fried oysters (yep, clearly being super healthy). The fried oysters were your typical fried oysters- definitely good but not anything unexpected or extraordinary. The truffle fries, however, were completely and utterly insane. I'm a fan of anything with truffles or truffle oil and clearly these fit that bill. I honestly don't know if I'll ever be able to go to Balliceaux again without ordering those ridiculously tasty fries. Clearly this review is an ode to the truffle potatoey goodness, but Balliceaux also offers creative cocktails and an upbeat environment. Their event calendar's jam packed with live music; sometimes shows are free and other times there's a small cover. Whether you're stopping by for a drink or settling in for a leisurely dinner, make sure you try the truf-f-f-fle fries.

We were visiting for Christmas and came on the Friday evening after Christmas around 730pm. It was not busy surprisingly. My boyfriend and I came on the Tuesday before for their $2 rail cocktail night and checked out the menu and wete impressed with its offerings so we planned to come back before leaving Richmond. Charming ambience. Great, attentive service. Fun & unique cocktail menu as well as creative dinner menu. Reasonably priced portions. The charcuterie/ artisan cheese plate was a great value. My pork belly & bruleed mac n cheese was delightful. Cooked to perfection. Boyfriend had a seared tuna steak also cooked perfectly however he felt the mussels lacked flavor. Overall it was a lovely experience. Highly recommend.

Took my girlfriend here for brunch today and it did not disappoint. Impeccable interior design, plating, service, and food. It's on the pricey end but that is something you expect from a high-end local joint like this. Also, they clearly mark the gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options on the menu (which changes seasonally!) so that was a huge plus.

This is one of these restaurants that not only offer good food, but also has nice environment to enjoy. Garlic edamame hummus and twice fried tostones with mojito salsa and butter milk cum dip are what we got for small plates. Very tasty. We got the daily special of some sort lamb. They were all delicious. I enjoyed the atmosphere more than the food.

  • Kim T.

Amazing drinks (I enjoyed some sort of bourbon/ginger concoction that was incredible!), good food and a SoHo-Cave type atmosphere. The edamame hummus appetizer was a huge hit at our table. I'd give it five stars if restrooms were not such an issue for dining guests.

Updated review. I'm NOT changing my opinion of the entrees, which are much more "miss" than "hit". For example, the shrimp and scallop dish was over cooked, the broth for the mussels was flat, the tofu in coconut milk was vile and the special pork belly was much more fat than meat. That said, I've found the sweet spot at Balliceaux is during happy hour. Enjoy a discount beer or glass of wine along with a few stellar appetizers. Highlights are the tandoori cauliflower, truffle fries and the meat/cheese plate. Best bets are on the daily specials, which are posted on the large blackboard inside the restaurant. One such special is on Sunday nights, 5-9pm, when they have an ever-changing burger option. $12 for a burger, you ask? Absolutely worth the price.

Meh. First of all, for you other out-of-towners there is no parking except street parking labeled as 1 hour parking. Most of the restaurants in Charlotte with $15-$20 entrees have valet so I'm surprised a place with all entrees over $20 and no lot has no valet parking. I don't like to feel like I have to move my car every hour to avoid a ticket. Maybe this is normal for Richmond since my client never warned me about this and none of the reviews mentions this. Then the menu is too random and each dish seemed to have something I didn't like and I didn't get the vibe that they would welcome substitutions. My cowoker and I started out with the smoked local bluefish dip which is quite good, but I just couldn't find an entree on the menu I felt in love with so I settled on the pimento grilled cheese. It came with truffle fries which I'm sorry...they aren't amazing. The rosemary fries at Smashburger are better. They were just fries. I also got a side of kale which was really full of some kind of fat so I left feeling like I had been to a greasy spoon instead of a hipster joint. The sandwich was very good, but I've had sandwiches at places that would at least let me swap out another side for the fries instead of leaving me with both. My coworker couldn't find an entree he liked either (partially because he couldn't even read the menu it was so dark) so he just got a double portion of the house smoked duck breast appetizer which was good enough, but not as good as we expected considering the high acclaim out client had given this restaurant. I will gladly pay $45 for dinner for myself at a nice restaurant, but I would not pay the prices this place has for its food again. They need to take some lessons from 300 East in Charlotte which has significantly better food and a much deeper menu for around the same price and attracts the same clientele...plus it has a parking lot. Next time I'm in Richmond I'll choose somewhere else.

I was obviously not hipster enough for this place. The service was terrible and slow, the waitresses seemed like they were not even there. Took forever to get service/food. The food was so gross, if you like weird hipster vegan food with no taste and tons of salt, go here every day. I just wasn't hip enough.

Try the Burger Research on Sundays! BF and I went in there on a Sunday to try it out and we were very impressed! I have the farmhouse salad (dressing was on point) with the Balliceaux Burger and he tried the waffle burger which came with fries. Such a great experience. I've always had great experiences here. Whether I am dancing on stage like a lunatic during Soul Power or just having a casual meal. The vibe is great and its the closest thing in RVA that reminds me of my summers in Greece in bars w/ great ambiance. Also, check out the music scene here at Balliceaux. They always have great dance parties and a different genre of music every weekend. Keeps me coming back for more!

I've been eating at Balliceaux for some time and have always enjoyed it. So, after having a rather dreadful meal on Christmas Eve, I decided to write to the owner and let him know. Perhaps I should have made a fuss when we were there, but didn't wish to do so because of the guest I had with me. I regret not sending the meals back instead. Anyway, I decided to contact the owner and wrote him a polite note via their website explaining what had happened and that as a loyal customer of many years, I was disappointed at the most recent visit. It has been 2 1/2 weeks with no response. So I've decided to write a review here. Maybe that will bring the problem to his/her attention. I have to say that considering there was only one other table, the wait of almost 1 hour for our food was unacceptable. Also, the food was terrible. The asparagus and beef I ordered was terribly over cooked, the potatoes under cooked and the service bad as well. When the server finally brought the food she said "that's how long it takes when you want well done". Firstly I never order beef well done and secondly a little apology for keeping us waiting so long would have been the correct thing to do. Instead she tried to blame us for their slow service. I regret not telling her it was too late and to keep the food. I further regret attempting to eat it and not make a fuss in front of an out of town guest which was a mistake on my part. It was a thoroughly bad meal.

In between volunteering for G40 and going to a hip hop house show, I stopped off for Sunday Supper at Balliceaux. It wasn't hard to find parking, unlike the typical difficulty I have on late Saturday nights when I usually go there. The waitresses were super nice to me all around. I usually feel a little alienated here on dance nights but dinner is a completely different experience. I think I like this place a lot better as a restaurant. I got the beautiful plate of shrimp, collards, and grits you see above. It was spicy and delicious. Better than Julep's, although I have only had Julep's appetizer version of shrimp and grits. I never really noticed how much I like their interior until I sat down for a rest here. Bathrooms: 2 unisex single-user locking facilities, one near the front bar, and the other near the back bar. MY FAVORITE INTERIOR DESIGN IN RICHMOND

I have to give RVA credit, y'all have the cutest bistros. One of my college friends had just moved to Richmond and really wanted to try this place out for brunch. So glad she suggested it. I had a pounding headache from the night before so I ordered the best cure... A delicious Bloody Mary. I ordered the duck confit and waffle. If you do not know me already, I have a serious obsession with poultry (normally fried) and waffles. Wow was this good. The spicy syrup was butter and had the right amount of kick to not take away from the stars of the dish. The duck was cooked perfectly and the waffle was perfect. I can't wait to try this place out for dinner.

I go here to party not eat. This review is based only on the food- it's pretty bland. I know they want to be on the locally grown bandwagon but they need to kick it up a notch. The ambience is awesome and really was one of the first places to change the Richmond dining scene for that they are awesome. Go here for cocktails and apps (maybe) but don't be disappointed if your meal isn't on the same standard as the decor.

Went last Sunday for brunch! It was great. We got there late but did not feel rushed. Empanadas were delicious. The egg sandwich, which sounds, boring was very good. Had red onion and cheese. Yum. Decor is beautiful. Drinks were fun! The pink chihuahua. Cutest salty dog ever. Loved it.

This is the downright worst dining experience I've ever had. And I did not even get to eat a meal here! This restaurant was packed, and we were told we would have a table in 30-40min. The wait didn't sound too bad so we agreed to have our name put down on the list. We waited at the bar, drinking warm drinks that were just so-so. 1.5hrs into the wait, we ask for our table, and turns out, the waitress forgot to put our name on the list!!!! And moreover she gave some random excuse about it. Then she said she had a table ready for us in the next 10 min. But oh wait, she gave it to someone else. At this point, we waited for almost 2 hours and lost our patience. 2 hours later, we get a table, and we are told that they ran out of their vegetarian entree and the kitchen cannot make anything else. This place SUCKS! It is terrible, pretentious and rude. One of those wannabe cool places that does not deliver. I'm NEVER ever going here again, and will do everything in my power to prevent my friends from dining here as well. If yelp had zero stars, that is what I would have awarded to this restaurant.

We had a fantastic Sunday Brunch at Balliceaux this past weekend. Originally we planned on going to S@mple with some out-of-town friends, but found it surprisingly closed, so we went on to Balliceaux, and were very glad that we did! I had never been to Balliceaux for Brunch before, usually go in the evening times for music. And we had a dinner once before that missed marks in a few places, but that was back much closer to when it had just opened. The menu is very diverse -- there were sandwiches, full on Entrees, Breakfast staples, and noodle bowls -- a little somethin' for everyone. And it was nice to get a break from the ubiquitous crab omelet, or a variation of Eggs Chesapeake which is on so many Brunch menus about town. Also, Brunch is funny because sometimes you want breakfast, sometimes you want lunch, sometimes you want both... and this menu provides all three. Our group ordered a mix of food -- a Hot Brown (open faced Pastrami Sandwich), Duck and Waffles (yep - DUCK and Waffles), and Cheeseburgers (with the truffle fries made famous by Jamie D's hit song "Truffle Fries"). We were drawn in to the varieties of Bacons, and decided we needed a "Bacon Platter" (two strips of each) for the table. Great choice there, it was a lot of fun sampling the various bacons -- top two had to be the 30 Clove and the Dragon. Made me think of the old saying, "Hard to go wrong when you start the day with a bacon platter." Wait, that's not a saying...yet. We ended the meal delighted by our find. Our out-of-town guests were thrilled, and we looked like knowledgeable locals: win, win, win.

Very limited menu. It was burger might . Mine had blue cheese and was good though not out if this world. Portion size could have been better. Bartender was true mixologist . Great customized drink list that would be hard to get elsewhere. They had musical performances after 8 and that added a lot to the rating.

I love this place for so many reasons. I actually first went to this place after it's soft opening. I have loved it ever since then. I've been there for lunch, dinner and for music and I have a great time, every time. I love the location. Away from the craziness of Cary St, downtown or Shockoe. It's very subtlely tucked away on Lombardy St. The design is outstanding. My favorite touch is the cablecar. I love the layout. The front is a great dining area, and it's always well lit. It does have a nice small bar. But the back area is almost like another restaurant, a more party-style restaurant. That being said, both sides are run flawlessly. The wait staff is so personable and well versed on the menu. Considering they change their menu fairly frequently, that's quite a feat. My wife and I went by for dinner during the week and got the shrimp and grits. Wow! The grits were so delicious, the shrimp was perfectly cooked and everything was seasoned perfectly! The thing I love the most about this place and why I keep coming back are the bartenders and their drinks. Shawn is hands-down the best bartender I've ever had the pleasure to be served by. His creations are amazing, although I must admit I do tend to stick to the Dark & Stormy. And even if he's not in, the other bartenders are great. The atmosphere is very trendy, but anybody would be welcome here. Regardless of who you are or where you come from, you have to make it over to Balliceaux one time in your life. Put it on your "bucket list".

My favorite part of Richmond definitely has to be the foodie-lover side to it. Some locals gave me some great recommendations over the past few weeks of great places to eat and I now have a running list of the top places to go. One of the places was Balliceaux, located off N. Lombardy in the Fan. With a quaint and nestled location, it was a little hard to recognize it was a restaurant. The ambiance is charming and has a rustic chic feel to it with the rock walls and hanging antlers. Balliceaux has a fantastic cocktail & beer list - I tried the "Intimate Secretary" with grapefruit vodka, rosemary syrup & lime (perfecto!). For my entree, I got the caprese salad with the fried risotto ball on top and it was so delish! The prices were a little higher end, but the food and drinks were on point so it was definitely well spent. They even have live music some nights during the week, which I have heard makes the experience even better. I can't wait to go back again, soon!

Located off the main area of the fan, it strives to be an eclectic yet classy sit down resturant. The lights are dim and the mood is great. While the place has a decent selection of beers on tap, the service was pushy as to making our selections for us. The Tendori cauliflower appetizer, was a nice twist on Japanese cuisine, I found that while very dry, burnt cauliflower was actually quite tasty. The turkey avacado brie sandwich is one of the best sandwiches I've had in my life and is reasonably priced. The truffle fries that came with it were delicious as well. The double fried quail was too big of a portion and the frying process did not enhance the flavor of the quail and the mashed potatoes did not amaze me. Overall, the place has a great atmosphere, the beer selection is great, and those truffe fries... but the dinners are overpriced and underwhelming.

I come here often only for the food, its always good. The decor is great. But the service leaves much to be desired. I had a particularly snooty waitress in the back room once. My friend asked for a particular drink and when he got the wrong mixture she replied "well thats the bartender's fault". We had to ask her to take it back to him. She then returned with the drink and said "that's the way it is made". TERRIBLE. Apparently if you ask for no vermouth, you will get vermouth and pay for it. I have had ok service up front. Not always friendly but attentive at least.

We had the unfortunate experience of going when they had no head chef and there was new wait staff. There wasnt much on the menu. They forgot our drinks. The service was slow and the food was okay. Ill give it another chance when they get their shit together.

I finally had an opportunity to return to Balliceaux for a full-on experience, and it was full on, head first, all out fantastic. I brought some friends who were visiting from out of town. They'd been to Richmond before and I'd shown them most of the old standbys already, so Balliceaux came to mind as the best new place to show off. We were here right before the 4th of July, and the place wasn't mobbed, which was nice. We didn't have to wait at all, but they were far from dead. At least 3/4 of tables were full, which seemed like a pretty perfect way to enjoy the space - busy enough for a lively atmosphere but not lemming spawning crazy. Anyway - yes, everything was great. Drinks, still absolutely dreamy. Yes, you will pay $10 for a cocktail but I guarantee you it will be like none other in town.. I love Hemingway's Revenge (rum, grapefruit juice, tahitian vanilla syrup, magic, etc.) but opted for the Sazerac cocktail, a very old school favorite (Rye, bitters, an absinthe liqueur), Strong. GOOD. We got the truffle fries - very good, a fun take on the usual frenchfried suspects. Didn't seem too heavy, had just the right amount of earthy richness. Tandoori fried cauliflower with a chickpea salad - fun and delicious. Everyone loved their entrees as well - hot housemade pastrami plate, shrimp in crawfish butter over corn cakes and collard greens (mine - I want this constantly, now). The grilled strip steak for my most carnivorous friend who has to have steak everywhere. Overall, it was the combination of things that sealed the deal for me here... good atmosphere, good food and actually really good music (lots of Stereolab, it seemed appropriate). Whoever was in charge of the mix that night, LOVE you. I could have stayed there all night. I will go back for sure.

Their cocktails looked delicious, and my colleagues all said they were amazing! A must have: truffle fries!!!!!! We ended up getting two orders because one wasn't enough for me. :) The red curry catfish was imaginative and delicious. I had the p.b.l.t. - I loooooooooooooooove pork belly and could not pass it up! I had such high expectations for this dish and it honestly let me down. I can't put a finger on it, but it was missing something! They refilled our water glasses about 10 times while we were there, but the minute we paid our check they seemed to run over to clear the glasses off our table. Which was... odd. Especially when cocktails were still in said glasses and were being drank? But all in all, the atmosphere was great, cocktails were solid (when they gave us enough time to drink them?), and truffle fries are a must have!

3.5 stars. The interior is tres chic and feels really hip, although you don't need to dress up super nice. The food was just not up to par for the price and atmosphere. Food was good maybe even above average, but not wow, great! Would have loved to give them 4 stars. I got the pork chops and friend got the steak. Next time I'd probably just get a few small plates. The tandoori cauliflower was my favorite dish. I'll definitely give them another chance.

When Balliceaux first opened, it was THE place to see and be seen. For that reason, I stayed away for awhile. When I finally made it in, I enjoyed it. The ambiance and decor are really nice. People make an effort to look nice when they go there. The food is good, the drinks are good, and the service is good. On the night I was there, the bar was pretty hopping... people revolving in and out... even a couple who didn't know any better making out. Fun place.

A friend and myself came here the Thursday before Christmas. We arrived around 9:30 and asked to sit in a booth but were told that if we were there just to drink, we would have to order a drink from the bar and sit back down at the table. A little put off by this because I've been to dinner here several times and this isn't the type of place where I expected to be ordering my own drinks... None-the-less, we ordered our drinks and a little snack and went back to our table. My friend, being from New York City, was really impressed with the decor/idea of this restaurant. It doesn't have the typical "Richmond" feel of a restaurant and even though just blocks away from my home, you walk in and feel like you could be in SOHO or a trendy restaurant in the Pearl District in Portland, Oregon. We had a great time and this band started playing around 10:00ish... the band was interesting...just interesting. We walked back there and listened and I wasn't quite sure between the person with the triangle and the screaming in the microphone how I should be dancing. Anywho, go check this place out for something different!

If you are coming here to eat, you will not be let down. This new age decor, accompanied with a bohemian atmosphere and lively wait staff to boot, make this a unique experience; something Richmond desperately needs. I came here for the free range chicken, and was not let down; Succulent, moist and bursting with flavour. Serves a whole family (sundays). The kimchee, another menu addition which I was eager to try, was a tad bit salty in my opinion, but is definitely worth another try. Fun for late nite's too. If only the crowd wasn't so uptight! (No body dances!)

Balliceaux has one of my favorite interiors in town. The bar tenders are funny and offer up good casual conversation. We recently stopped by on a Sunday night for Classical Revolution. The mix of pieces played was diverse and very fun. The seats filled up quickly but the show was great. They make a cauliflower pakora that is amazing. I crave them and would eat them like potato chips.

This is a solid restaurant pretty close to campus. The food is definitely good, but nothing to rave about and certainly on the pricey side. As for drinks, they are probably in the top 5 in the city. Creative, skillfully made drinks that look good, taste good, and pack a punch. Amazing variety as well. The ambiance here is great too. It has a very LA feel, which is unique to the city of Richmond. If you've never been, it's definitely worth trying out.

I love this restaurant! It has a great NY vibe. Modern interior with eclectic and very tasty food! What I don't like? The parking!!!!!!!! This week I received a $50 (yes, you read that correctly) ticket for parking in the fan for a whole 63 minutes while eating lunch at Balliceaux!! This ridiculous fee goes up to $60 if not paid within 10 days. AND to add insult to injury, our money hungry state gov. adds a $3 "convenience fee" to pay it online versus paying with a check! REALLY??????? I love our fan restaurants, but at that price, I can't afford to be a patron! Sorry fan businesses! I'll have to stick to Carytown or (gasp!!!!!) head out to the suburbs!

On two separate trips, I've requested my burger be medium rare and it has come out "Burned to a Crisp" well done. So why would I not send it back on this second occasion? Because unfortunately their kitchen is one of the slowest I've ever experienced, and I'm afraid everyone who eats there does not send theirs back because they are hungry after waiting so long for their meals. However, the restaurant is really quite good. The truffle fries are to die for, the drinks are stiff (if a bit expensive for Richmond), and though it used to have a distinct and unfortunate hipster vibe, that seems to have died down somewhat. I have been before when our waiters have been absolutely terrible, but our waiter this time, a tall black guy with dreadlocks, was awesome and very attentive. I look forward to my next trip, and hopefully to a 4 or 5 star review in the future!

We went to Balliceaux again last night. This time we sat in a cute little booth in the front, and it was a much better experience than sitting at one of the tables along the wall like we on our previous visit. It wasn't too loud and we had no problem hearing each other. (I don't see a lot of point in any dining or going out experience where you cannot hear your own party. Unless y'all have nothing to talk about.) On to more important things. The food was AWESOME. In fact, it was so awesome, I believe we're going to make Balliceaux our go-to restaurant instead of Joe's Inn. Yes, it's more $$$, but what the hell. It's worth it. We had the smoke fish dip again, and we tried the wings. Delicious explosions of taste in your mouth! My husband repeated the bonger burger (he got that last time) and I gladly attacked his french fries. I ordered the potlikker braised catfish, and let me just say Balliceaux's catfish made Comfort's catfish look stupid. Great flavor, a little old bay in there, moist and tasty--yes, yes, yes, I will order it again. After the bread, the two big appetizers, our two scrumptious meals, wine and beer, we sadly had no room for dessert. In fact, we were so stuffed we had to go home and lie down. Lesson learned: do not go crazy eating too much at Balliceaux. Other bits: our server was lovely, relaxed, and knowledgeable, everything was clean and there were fresh flowers on the tables. Balliceaux, you get my highest rating and a promotion to our go-to restaurant. Maybe if we can stay up late enough we'll check out your late night entertainment!

Some real hits and misses, highs and lows blah blah blah. Both in staff/service and the kitchen there are some real inconsistencies. It is immediately apparent on walking into Balliceaux that they want to be the hippest, coolest place in town. Too hip and cool for you, definitely too hip and cool for me. The concrete walls and super modernist art fall flat for me (except for the piece that has the erect metal pole sticking out - oddly compelling). It doesn't seem to fit with the grown-up comfort food menu. But the bar - the focal point at the back when you enter - is stylish and a little retro without jumping into the avant garde with the rest of decor. On our first visit we started with the Shrimp and Grits which were heaven - the perfect amount of spice. We also had cups of the Roasted Pumpkin Mushroom Soup (sounded amazing, but bland) and Coastal Blue Crab (really lovely). FB got the Crispy Renderend Duck Breast that wasn't - crispy, that is, not rendered at all, but still very flavorful. I had the Aromatic Steamed Salmon that wasn't - aromatic, that is, very little flavor but well cooked. Still, we left happy and satisified and planning to come back. Second visit. Started with the Artisan Cheese Plate which turned out to be a bad move. We are certainly not connoisseurs but we are adventerous when it comes to cheese - none of these, with the exception of the bleu cheese, was anything I would seek out and try again. FB got the Braised Short Rib which was truly delicious - perfectly cooked and sauced. I got the Heritage Burger since really nothing on the dinner menu was jumping out at me. It was good - greasy as hell. The sweet potato fries on the side were clearly frozen and didn't taste as if they had been seasoned. I don't object to previously frozen fries but throw a little sea salt on there, or give me a really tasty dipping sauce. What they do well they do really well. Choose wisely.

OMG their truffle fries are amazing! And they have really nice cocktails. If you're looking for a posh restaurant to lounge around in this is the perfect place to go and is really low key if you're not trying to bump into too many familiar faces ;)

I finally ate a full meal at Balliceaux today after being teasingly tantalized with dessert and drinks on Valentine's Day and I was NOT disappointed. In fact, I discovered many things: 1. Cauliflower is actually delicious when fried in tandoori spices and served with a zesty chickpea salad. 2. Sweet potato fries continue to be a wonderful, marvelous gift from baby Jesus. 3. Pork belly is just awesome. 4. Southern gentlemen actually DO exist. Yes, that's right. Our waiter brought over the banana pudding dessert we ordered (I don't even like banana and it was delectable.) with the news that our ENTIRE meal had been paid for by a mysterious stranger in an argyle sweater sitting at the bar with a burger. So, Balliceaux, 5 stars for making me like things I have previously professed my hatred for, amazing sweet potato fries, and your classy clientele.

Oh man do I looooveeee Balliceaux. First of all, it was in a super convenient (read: dangerous) locale, about a block and a half from my apartment when I lived in the Fan. I only went there a few times, on very different occasions, and every time I showed up it was great. First of all, the atmosphere is phenomenal: they really figured out how to utilize the long narrow spaces that most Richmond buildings have in that area. It's low-lit but not too dark, and has classic decorating with some fun modern twists (little trolley cars hanging suspended from the ceiling? A re-imagining of a ship window by our table? And that iconic deer out by the entrance? It's all so bizarre, and yet somehow, it works). I love the mix of people that show up: you have your big groups of adults, girls dressed to the nines before going out, young and old couples alike, and just people who wander in to see what all the fuss is about. I usually dressed on the nicer side, but a dress code wasn't enforced. Then of course, there's the food. The first time I went, I split the cheese plate and a bottle of wine with my companion. It had some GREAT artisanal cheeses, and I'm picky about my cheese plates. I recall other times I got the quail (amazing) and the pork belly (FANTASTIC, can't say enough good things). Another time I had a friend coming from out of town, and we swung by for a drink after eating elsewhere. This was my first time going up to the bar, and it was super busy on a Saturday night. My Manhattan was good but perhaps not worth the $15 ticket attached, but I've paid much more for far worse drinks before. My only criticism: of the four times I went to Balliceaux, I ordered some variety of red wine thrice, and EVERY single time it was too warm. When a red gets past a prime temperature, even a great glass can taste flabby, too alcoholic, and downright unenjoyable. One of those times I left a glass on the table, mostly undrunk, for this reason. But ultimately: great place. I've taken best friends, boyfriends, and a parent to this place and it delivered on every occasion.Richmond deserves more restaurants like you, dear Balliceaux. Keep up the good work.

Food, four stars. Ambiance, no stars. Had a great meal here. Just wish I could have seen it. We were seated in the "back room." It was so dark in there that people were literrally using flashlights to read the menus. I really think I saw a waiter even have one at the ready. Owner, that should tell you something. It happens so often the waiters have flashlights. Reading the menu was bad enough but when my girlfriend and I were served, we couldn't see our food. I ordered the short ribs (which were great) and she ordered the Vegetarian mushroom dish. Of course both dishes are dark to begin with but in this light, we were guessing what we were eating in any given forkful. Luckily, it was all good. As for the space itself, there also must be acoustical challenges. To have to lean in over dinner and repeat yourself to be heard was very distracting. We laughed it off but I'm afraid I will only go back there for takeout.

What do i not love about Balliceux? Previous comment about the ambience baffles me... i love the art in this place, and the back room where they hold shows is awesome. Other things I love: good value for lunch. Much cheaper than dinner and you get a great quality lunch for the price. The falafel flatbread wrap: this is not your ordinary falafel. I salivate at the thought of it. The biscuits. Brunch here is awesome. AND they have great music. All in all, this is one of my favorite places in the fan.

I've had two instances with a bartender that works here being incredibly rude to guests. I ordered a $11 cocktail and he sighed and rolled his eyes at me. (huh??) Then he threw it together so quickly the mix was awful. Later that night, one of my beers came in a plastic cup full of mostly foam, and he spilled half of it all over the bar. Since they were packed and he was slammed, i didn't ask for another drink. Then I witnessed him yelling at a customer! I understand when a bar is packed you're trying to sling as many drinks as possible but this place needs to staff more people at the back room bar and fire that guy. And there's never a good reason to yell at customers. Never! He's the Asian male, has been working the bar the past 2 Saturday nights. Get rid of that guy!

They make their own cheese! How many restaurants can you say that about. The pork chop entree was amazing and if you are a pork fan you need to check this out. Pistachio Ice Cream, again, home made, was perfection for all you PIC lovers. A friend had this Mexican Cinnamon Stick dessert that I tried and it is also to die for. The house made Pastrami with choucroute/ warm potato salad is a huge portion and was the best this side of NYC. I also had lunch here a few months back. The soup I had was a Anduoille sausage split pea and was perfection.....the burger, amazing. The use of artisan cheese and fresh field greens makes the common There is now a "Sunday Supper" following in the lead of Cafe Rustica's lead. Three entrees are offered in the traditional categories that are uniquely Balliceux: Water, Field & Forest, and Farm & Pasture. Interesting way of saying basically: Salad, Meat, Fish....but you know how trendy these restaurant folks can be these days. The back bar is super crowded and one night in the late spring it was sweltering hot in there. They have DJs, bands, and live entertainment there that pack in a crowd. Very trendy and au courant still. The food, changing menu, concentration on fresh foods, and atmosphere is sure to keep this a popular spot for a long time.

One of my favorite spots in Richmond. Cocktails here are delicious and made with care and the food is always delicious. My favorites here are the tandoori fried cauliflower and "down the rabbit hole," which is a cocktail featuring tequila, red wine, blackberries, and domaine de canton ginger liqueur. Their wine selections are also great and I've found that the waitstaff is always willing to make a good pairing recommendation. This place is a great cocktail date spot, but the entrees are also delicious. The menu changes seasonally, but over the summer I had a red curry with catfish dish that was the best curry I'd ever tasted. The last time I went I tried the sesame-crusted catfish hoping that it would wow me just as much, and while it was still very tasty, it did not live up to my expectations following the mind-blowing dish I had this summer. Regardless, I'll definitely go back here again.

American/French/Cajun/ASIAN fusion fusion fusion fusion Who else offers KimChee on the same menu as with carbonara? Soup: Spicy Crab and Coconut Milk - flavorful and delicious! a tinge of spice mixed with fresh basil and cilantro. *smack your lips* Roasted Trout with fennel puree. Blackened on the outside, not burnt. Moist and tasty white fresh trout on the inside. They give you the whole fish minus the tail and the head. Not a mystery brick of white fillet. Mushroom Carbonara - I almost never order simple pasta from a restaurant. Except.... this time I did. AND LOVED IT. Great place for 2 or 4. Has a big city (think San Francisco) vibe. Only thing, be prepared to wait on a Saturday night.

Far from Bogart's...from the moment we walked in we were blown away by the decor. This place is very intimate. The waitstaff was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. We had the lamb meatballs and truffle fries for an appetizer, both recommended by the waitress, which are a must have! The waitress also recommended the Lancatay cab for us, which paired perfectly with my husbands short ribs and my filet. Both cooked to perfecton. We had dessert to go, the churros in coffee sauce, which did not disappoint. We have heard some mixed reviews on this place, but our experience was perfect. Other reviewers mentioned it being loud, which was not our experience at all. But we also went on a week night, so I can't say how it is on the weekend. Others mentioned ths staff being rude, our waitress and the hostess couldn't have been more hospitable. Definitely give it a try. It is easily one of our favorite spots in Richmond.

Great restaurant from the atmosphere to the food. The cauliflower with chickpea salad was AMAZING. Definite spot to check out in Richmond - its a smaller menu, but I think it changes a few times seasonally so I will be back next time I visit.

Came here for lunch. Was not crowded at all. Ordered the crab soup. If it was not for the peppers, it would be really bland. I ordered the burger as the meal, and it came well done instead of the medium rare i specified.

OMG. I try not to use these acronyms but this is exactly what comes to mind as you bite into the Natural Beef Burger at Balliceaux. Where do I begin? Well, I have been working on the Richmond burger-scene ever since I became a carnivore again a couple of years ago - enamored with Richmond Magazine's Top Ten Burger article. Balliceaux was not in business when this article was written but if they had been they would surely have made the grade. In my book they are in the top 5 - why?: Freshness of ingredients, especially the hamburger but also the detail to the bun and lettuce and cheese / Cooked to perfection - the winning test is if they can truly make a "medium-rare" burger and they fulfilled this request better than most restaurants in town / Next the side dish - I usually try to order something besides fries but I must say that Balliceaux's Truffle Fries are a huge step above the average fry. Tuesday eve is the time to go to Balliceaux (no bands, no crowds) and this burger, at $12, is the meal that will satisfy ...

Love the atmosphere! The bartenders are fantastic, the music is always good, and the drinks are always on point. My favorite late night spot!

The work crew and I visted Balliceaux tonight for a holiday gathering of coworkers. We went early on Monday, 12/19, as it was the only time in a busy holiday season that we could all gather. They gladly seated us at 5:30pm and we enjoyed a quiet dinner with few other folks at the restaurant. We really enjoyed our server's company and knowledge of the menu. Erin, I believe her name was. She was friendly and attentive. Another coworker and I who frequent RVA restaurants were a little mystified at the menu. I had not been to Balliceaux in some time and I assumed that it was one of those places whose menu changed quite frequently. However, it was clear that their menu had not changed at least since summer. They had heirloom tomatoes, summer ham, and a salad listing watermelon as a main ingredient on the menu. When we inquired, our server said they were in the process of updating it. The heirloom tomatoes were mentioned by our server as unavailable, obviously, and we did not inquire about the summer ham entree or the watermelon salad. I thought this was strange for a spot that has come to be know as a RVA destination spot. We ordered the morsel plate with brussels sprouts, olives, and spicy nuts. This was good for two people but order two if you are with a larger group. We also tried the charcuterie plate which was nice. I tried the soup du jour, wasabi split pea. Nice try but it was basically a bland spit pea soup with some wasabi and wasabi peas, I think, thrown on top. It needed a bit of salt. I had the grilled cheese with pickles and truffle fries as an entree which was fine but nothing earth shattering. Overall we had a great time at Balliceaux and I really enjoy the modern decor, music, style, etc. Just update the menu...

We were in town from Boston for the weekend and we tried Balliceaux on the recommendation of some friends of my parents. The website and menu looked promising, and it turned out to greatly exceed our expectations. It's a great space that they've put together there. Very high ceilings and nicely decorated in a modern homey industrial style. We were told to expect a wait of over an hour for a table at 8pm, but we were seated after about 45 minutes. The restaurant is split into a front area that is mostly tables and a livelier back room that had a busy bar and some booths. I ordered a sidecar and a Hendricks gimlet, and both drinks were well made. The truffle fries we got as an appetizer were excellent. Our table tried the trout, the mushroom/asparagus tart, the duck confit crepe, and the pork belly. My wife was astounded at the lack of skimpiness with the duck in her crepe and liked it quite a bit. The tart and the pork belly were the consensus best dishes. I thought the pork belly in particular was outstanding. We didn't get a chance to try dessert because we were all full, but we'll definitely give it a shot the next time we're in town. This was a place that I think could fit in fine even in a foodie city like New York, San Francisco, or Philadelphia.

After rave reviews from my boss, I checked out Balliceaux immediately after they opened. The first time I went with friends, I got champagne with hibiscus syrup and tuna crudo. I had no idea what I ordered and was sad to see small pieces of fish and olives. Totally my bad, so I can't put the blame on them. The second time I went, I had a duck confit crepe, my boyfriend got the pork belly. Our meals were definitely tasty but I wasn't in love. They definitely got it goin' on in the dessert department. During my last visit, I had churros and coconut cake. It is absolutely worth it to check Balli (as I like to call it) out. As a bar, Balli is really fun. I love that there are two bars and there are so many fun drinks to try. There is always so many places to sit or stand but when it's dead, it looks like a lonely train station. I mean, they have even had two DJs playing at the same time and you can't even hear it when in the front or back. My bf and I normally have our brunch spot but our friends invited us to Balliceaux a few Sundays ago. I had no idea they even did brunch! Slightly hungover, I immediately order a Bloody Mary. I got mine spicy with a salt/pepper/celery seed rim. (You can also get old bay rim). And I was pleasantly surprised that their Bloodies are actually spicy! I almost couldnt finish it. Plus, they have a fun Bloody Mary bar of many pickled things like beets, carrots, and of course bleu cheese stuffed olives! I was torn between the heritage burger with fried eggs or duck confit waffles. I chose the waffles, the spicy maple syrup was looked too good to be true. They also offer bacon six-ways! Can you even wrap your head around that? I went for the 30 clove, garlic cured but they also have espresso cured & chinese 5 spice cured & 3 more.. Everything was so unbelievably delicious. The entire table was raving the entire time we were eating. My bf normally eats french toast and I really wanted him to try the zucchini french toast but he opted for biscuits & gravy, which he loved. I have to go back as soon as possible so we can try these other things! It is a little more expensive than our usual brunch spot, but the whole dining experience is awesome and totally worth it.

Went for dinner and had a 7pm reservation. We were seated by the door where it was freezing anytime someone opened the door. We asked to move to the empty table and were told the table was reserved, so apparently you need to reserve specific tables. Waiter was an a-hole and acted like we had to do what he wanted. We requested our check after only ordering drinks. When he brought us the check he offered us a better table but at this point his attitude was too much. Went to Bookbinders and spent twice as much and had a great dinner.

I read the reviews - why I went there, plus, it's a neighborhood spot and I believe in eating at least once in every spot in the neighborhood. I'm guessing from the reviews and my experience there are 2 chefs, and one of them needs to be fired. For whatever reason - great decor, interesting menu, mediocre food, dreadful service. I can forgive the service, but not the food. It just wasn't that good. The menu was delicious - I was so optimistic on reading it. I wanted to order everything off the menu. Then the food came out. It was ok I guess. I would have had a better meal at Mcdonald's.... The only thing I can think of is that when the guy who wrote the menu cooks, its great, and when he doesn't it isn't. It costs way too much for that variability. If I knew which I'd go back, but not unless

BEAUTIFUL ATMOSPHERE, NICE SERVER, HIGH CLASS, LOVELY FOOD PRESENTATION! BUT... PLEASE DON'T BRING YOUR VEGAN or VEG FRIENDS HERE! Unfortunately the "vegan" options AREN'T VEGAN!!!! Not even vegetarian. I'd expect a menu with several options denoted vegan that they would be, we are in Richmond, VA for crying out loud. I ordered the brussel sprout morsels to start and the tandori cauliflower as a small plate (since no main dishes are denoted vegan on the menu). The lovely server brought us the appetizer, and I wasn't sure what it was, she explained that it was the morsels, I asked which of the three were vegan, she said everything but the brussel sprouts since they are deep fried in the same oil the chicken is.... SO happy she told me, what an awesome server. I explained I ordered the morsels since it was denoted vegan, she politely brought me the menu to show me that it is only denoted vegetarian (which by the freakin way STILL NOT VEGETARIAN!!!) and to her surprise she realized it WAS denoted vegan. She asked if she could bring me anything else, I asked what was vegan. She said just the soup was vegan... I asked about the cauliflower... she said it was fried in the same oil.... also denoted vegan. She then corrected herself and said that now she remembers it is vegan... total bummer. Grossed out. Fun fancy place to go for a cocktail, though! However, my boyfriend had a beef dish and loved it.

The drinks are expensive; this is Richmond not D.C. My short ribs were delicious but none of my other dining companions liked their dishes. Everything was underseasoned, the need to learn what salt and pepper are--and put it back on the tables. It was loud. Friends eat together so they can talk. They prefer not to shout to do so. It was also unbelievably hot.

I heart Balliceaux. Many other reviewers have commented on the chic decor, but I also have to give it a quick mention. Anyone who went here when the space was Bogart's will be in shock. The space is contemporary, well lit and just super cool. The back bar is definitely a trendy place to hang out. I've been for dinner several times. First, the cocktail menu. The list of classic cocktails includes a list of vintage selections that are super in right now like the Sazerac, Mojito, Pisco Sour and Sidecar. I tried a Dark and Stormy for the first time here and fell head over heels in love. I've tried to make my own at home, but it just doesn't live up to the perfect ratios at Balliceaux. The second section of the menu called "our mixology" contains seasonal and inventive cocktails the bartenders there came up with. I tried the Tom Yum Yum (Cirrus vodka, Cruzan coconut rum, fresh ginger, local hot chili, lemongrass syrup and fresh lemon served on the rocks) and it was an inventive, flavor-filled libation. All the ingredients combined well together for a refreshing, Thai-inspired beverage. It's not something I'd drink tons of because the flavors are very strong, but I'd order one again. The Hemingway's Revenge (Brugel rum, lime juice, ruby red grapefruit and Tahitian vanilla syrup served on the rocks) is much more dangerously drinkable: sweet and citrusy with a finish of vanilla. There's a selection of microbrews and a nice wine list. The wines are divided by "bubbles," "Floral and Tripical," "Earthy and Buttery," Spice, Dark Fruit," and "Earth, oak." Selections come from all over the world. The diner menu is also creatively divided into "field & forest" (vegetarian), "farm & pasture" (pork, chicken, red meat), and "waters" (seafood). I've had lots off the menu, and while everything hasn't been a 100 percent hit, lots has been very good. The tandoori fried cauliflower small plate is freakin' awesome. It's got great Indian flavors and comes with chickpea salad and quick-pickled cucumber. Similarly, the cheese plate always has a great selection and comes with preserves that are made in Goochland. I tried pork belly for the first time here, and it was tasty. Crispy on top, meaty on the bottom. All around delish. The menu changes pretty regularly, and I always look forward to seeing what's new. I've had different levels of service here. Most times it's been very very good. My servers have been super enthusiastic (Eryn is great!) and eager to please. I will say once I had a very indifferent, blah server who detracted from my dining experience. Because Balliceaux kept the stage that was there when the back room belonged to Bogart's, they also have concerts. Become a fan on their Facebook page to keep up with current events. Balliceaux also has a Sunday supper that includes family-size portions for small prices.

I really don't understand the hype. I've been several times at the insistence of various friends and every time the food highly disappoints. The food is bland, even when ordering supposedly spicy items! Service is quite slow, as this is a small restaurant with large crowds. The atmosphere itself is lively, an enjoyable place to hang out with their trendy furniture and large crowds. Their craft cocktails are very good, but their bar is quite small, leading to long wait times to order. This would be a good place to unwind after work and hang out at the bar, but the small size of the place makes this unenjoyable given crowds and long wait times. I would definitely stay away from the food, too.

Another fantastic lunch on my trip to Richmond. The details are kind of hazy since I think I ate at 30 or so new places in my week and a half in town, but this place stands out with it's excellent food, quality service, and beautiful redesign. The beer menu was very solid as well. My soup stood out as the highlight though, a delicious and spicy pork soup that quickly disappeared. I'd go back in an instant if I was in town again.

Food, atmosphere and cocktails are all solid. Very cool interior and ambiance with the exception of the hostess. After at first being told that we could not sit at a table without a reservation - it was 7 PM and we wanted to enjoy cocktails and appetizers - we were seated. We then ordered two rounds of drinks and several appetizers. Around 7:15 we were rudely and without reason told by the hostess - not the waitress - that we would need to finish and close our tab. Apparently the table was needed despite the lackluster 7:30 Friday crowd. The restaurant was half-empty. Not being offered a drink or a place at the bar I closed my close to $50 tab, which is easily a meal for two. Needless to say, I was incredibly rude for the hostess to 1) ask to leave before we finished our drinks and 2) not offer the table for dinner -which we would have accepted. The waitress to her credit apologize profusely and was upset about losing a well spending table of two. Bottom line - good drink and solid food but rude staff. Not worth the visit. Plenty of other places in the area without cheeky and and ungracious staff.

Went for lunch the other day and everything was great. I am not much on trendy interiors, so I will just stick to what matters ... the food. The small plates are not small, they are a meal. I had a mushroom and pasta dish, my two companions had the catfish. Both were excellent. Dessert was good as well. The churros were apparently amazing (I didn't try them) and the cheese plate was a good selection but felt a little uninspired. All in all, everyone went away satisfied. Service was a slightly slow but worth the wait. All the food felt is made to order, so it was fresh, simple and delicious. I would go back the next time I am in Richmond. Price range is for the lunch menu is $$.

visited 2 consecutive nites while working in the area this last week. i've traveled a bit for work the last few years and living in the SF Bay Area i've been to quite a few good eateries. Balliceaux impressed me enough to want to make me get on a plane head back to try the rest of the menu. i sat at the back area bar for both my meals so i can't really give an accurate account of the regular floor wait staff but the folks that worked behind the bar were great, esp. Elaine. the cocktails were tasty. great? i dunno. but as close as i can say that i've been impressed by the drinks. i had a Sazerac, a Dark and Stormy as well as a Isn't She Lovely which is a house developed Martini with a hint of basil. a bit on the sweet side for me but the touch of basil made it an extremely refreshing drink for summers in the area. the food...ohh... the small bowl of olives and nuts were a simple and tasty side to my cocktails. the fried sage was a nice touch. i had the tandoori cauliflower both visits. it's served w/ a creamy chick pea salad that tasted better than any potato salad i've ever had. a hint of curry and the texture of the whole chick peas made it a nice side to the slightly spicy cauliflower. also on the plate were house made pickles. night one i had the ham and cheese baguette which came with fries, 2nd night ...oyster stew which i surprisingly really enjoyed. the oysters were cooked perfectly in a creamy broth w/ some potatoes. could have been muscles instead and it would have still been great. the sandwich was exactly what i wanted. local ham and Appalachian cheese. the only disappointment were the garlicky greens. tasted fine but were lukewarm when i got them. overall,a wonderful experience...a great find for one so random.

Very loud, but generally quite tasty. I had a good meal here, and enjoyed the space particularly, though a bit of baffling would go a tremendous distance. The smaller plates are generally what I would pick.

I though Balliceux was wonderful the two times I have been there for lunch. I loved 1. Even with the crazy construction going on in front they had a full house on a weekday afternoon 2. It looks like a renovated autogarage spruced up with thoughtful art pieces, flower vases and 60s/70s decor. 3. They had cute pink matches. Oh ya and the food/menu is wonderful! I had the pasta under small plates, not small at all well worth the money and the second time I just got a simple salad with blackberries that had these fried herbs and wonderful dressing it was great. Both times I ordered the seafood soup and both times is was wonderful and FILLED with seafood. Just overall a great eat. Can't wait to have dinner there!

Hits & misses. Mostly misses. We went here so my vegetarian friend would have some options - the menu looked great. The waitress was excellent, & the ambience fun but the food a disappointment. The crab soup was unexpectedly very peppery/spicy - I gave it away. Sadly, the duck is no longer on the menu (they should update their website, since I'd been looking forward to that). The cioppino seafood stew was excellent but the vegetarian sampler was beyond boring - beans and rice and string beans. And salty at that. None of the neat veggie sides that are listed on the menu were included (curried cauliflower, truffle fries, collards, chickpeas -none). The dessert we shared was supposed to be an almond cake but it was flavorless.

The ambiance and decor of this restaurant is phenomenal as stated in previous reviews it's New York- esque ... The drinks were great when they came which was so sporadic that I ended up going to the bar twice to get my drinks as our server was MIA for most of the meal ... When the food came out it was a long time waiting so I was obviously expecting something mind blowing(esp for the price) but was disappointed by my undercooked hangar steak with its meager amount of old fries propped up by a dry cabbage concoction.... I tried to send the steak back but again our server was MIA and it was my friends birthday so I didn't want to detract from her night by complaining - at the end of the night the server mixed everyone's checks up and ended up charging me for everyone's drinks and entree's and didn't end up charging others in the party - when trying to sort it all out I was fed up with the servers bad attitude compounded by the fact that she sucked so I asked for the manager who was just as nasty and unapologetic for her servers bad service, the bad food, and bad memory - needless to say I won't be back and won't send clients there until they step it up on the service and food - drinks and atmosphere alone won't carry this place to the top - a lot better choices in Richmond

We went here for my birthday dinner, expecting if not a truly great experience, at least a decent one. Unfortunately, some of the staff at Balliceaux should not be working in the food service industry, and they don't hesitate to let you know. First of all, they don't take reservations, which is stupid considering that you'll need to wait an hour and a half for a table. The hostess is inexperienced and rude-she told us it would be 40 minutes, and when that turned into 50 or 60, she never once bothered to let us know. Then she tried to seat us facing the bathroom-I'm not sure who designed the place to have a table facing the bathroom, but there you go. We waited another half hour for a table, and the hostess made a point of making a remark about how we could have been sat earlier, except we turned down the toilet table. The food, at least, was good, and the waitress we had was nice. However, I don't recommend going back to this place til they start acting like a real restaurant-taking reservations to cut down on the massive wait time, and hiring professionals for the front of the house staff.

Okay, so the cocktails are overpriced. It doesn't matter. Save money on the food by ordering truffle fries and the tandoori cauliflower, and it all evens out. Everything I've eaten here has been delicious! Great atmosphere too.
