Wabi Sabi Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

We stopped in midweek a few months back for a discount tappas night. We were the only ones eating upstairs in the restaurant. A few people entered and went down to the bar but we didn't check it out. Like most of the Old Town Petersburg restaurants it was small and had lots of character. The food was tasty and nicely presented, portions were small and the price was a bit high. But I guess you're paying for the novelty of it. The waitress kept forgetting about us. She was busy doing paperwork, homework or maybe a crossword puzzle--I don't know. When we finally reminder her we were missing some food she said the ovens were broken for a short time. What?! We were in plain view of the ovens, refrigerator and both cooks. Nothing worse than a server that can't own up to their own mistakes.

This place is a hit or miss sometimes. Living in petersburg this is the only place around that serves sushi but depending the people that are working, depends on the service you receive. Hence you have to be in the mood to go.

We just moved here and heard rave reviews about this place. The first thing I noticed was how trashy the hostess/waitress looked. I was REALLY surprised they were allowing her to work in that state. My husband and I were actually wondering to ourselves if she was on drugs. Then my miso soup came and was cold so I sent it back. I still gave this place 3 stars because once the food came it was good. Not great, and definitely overpriced, but it was at least unique. Who would think to put coconut on sushi? I'd go back and try it again.

Loved this place! I was looking for a place to eat while passing through and stumbled upon Wabi Sabi. Forget the upstairs area, head downstairs to the funky little bar. Brick walls, cozy, intimate space, paintings for sale on the walls (local artists) and a live band later on in the evening. Even better, the very nice bartender makes a good (from scratch) Mojito. Staff is very friendly and outgoing. The only reason it's not five stars is the Sushi is so so..not bad, just not up to my uber-picky standards. That said, I'll be back anytime I am in the neighborhood.

Service in the late afternoon was okay- friendly waitress but she was distracted for long periods of time by her responsibilities in the back. There are options for sushi and non-sushi eaters, which is always helpful. The chicken fritters are a favorite of mine, very flavorful. The sushi's fine, the fish isn't great but it was very well made. I didn't see any low-sodium soy sauce but also didn't ask. Will definitely be going back!

Just ate here for the first time and we will definitely be back! The spider roll is amazing!

All I have to say is Awesome: from every aspect. The sushi (quantity and quality) is great, as well as the service and atmosphere. Although I haven't been in the new martini bar, the down stairs lounge area is always a good time. The different live bands and comedy shows that I have seen have all been a great hit! Not to mention the personal interaction with the staff and owner make the experience that much greater!

Friendly owner (DJ), upbeat vibe, solid sushi place.. was pleasantly surprised. I'm in town visiting home and my mom had been raving about a this place for the week or so before I got in. Being a sushi fanatic, I was excited to try it. We started with spring rolls that came with a spicy thai sauce, shared crabcakes and had some sushi as well. The spring rolls were really yummy and the sauce wasn't too spicy so that was good. They're deep fried so not the healthiest I hope DJ adds a healthier version wrapped in rice paper with veggies and a peanut sauce. That would be bomb. The crab cakes were also solid. This is coming from a person who doesn't particularly enjoy crab meat but if you do I recommend them.. Having been spoiled by sushi places in LA I wasn't expecting too much from here. The fish pieces were modest (lots more rice than fish) and pretty fresh. The salmon was buttery smooth and yellowtail was really fresh. The unagi could have used a touch more eel sauce but was actually broiled very nicely. Well well done on the sushi. My only gripe was the temperature. It was balls hot in the basement and only got hotter as people came in. Eating sushi while hot is not a pleasant experience... Because it was so warm our Cold Nigori Unfiltered Sake warmed up and that's a no-no. It's like having warm champagne, just not the same. Asked for a cup of ice water to chill it on so that helped. Should definitely come standard though. Luckily the AC came on just as the heat was getting a bit unbearable but it should def be turned down a couple of degrees. Great little find and I'm sure I'll be back next time I'm in town!

The sushi here is not good, sorry. Very small pieces of fish on a very large chunk of rice. Rolls tend to fall apart. And the prices are not proportionate to the quality of food. The sushi is way too expensive for what you get. Service was terrific, however. I just wished the food were better.

Went to Wabi Sabi on the recommendation of a friend who was actually sending me there to hear a local band. Located in "downtown" Petersburg, Wabi Sabi is a two level restaurant/bar with the main bar and music area located below the street level. The sushi is great! I love the volcano roll and everything is fresh and made-to-order. Drinks are well made and not watered down. They have music on Wednesdays and the local band that I heard there was amazing! If you are looking for fresh sushi and some good music check out Wabi Sabi on Wednesday nights.

It's hard to say what's going on here, but the place has taken a turn for the worse. Not enough to completely write it off, but enough to drop a star. It's possible that the they're taking a hit from the economy being down.

  • Johnny G.

You could do a lot worse in Petersburg than Wabi Sabi. Love the concept and the menu. Hipster sushi loving uppity ups won't like the fact that this isn't authentic, but if you enjoy a good meal in a relaxing environment this is a great place.

My family and I just dined at this restaurant tonight for the 1st time. The ambiance was nice and different but everything else was awful. The first issue was that our hostess ended up being our waitress? Seemed a bit odd and unorganized. She was fine but not very attentive to our needs...for example, forgot to bring us napkins, silverware, etc. We had to ask her for many items over the course of dinner. The big kicker was that we recently purchased a $25off coupon through Restaurant.com . Well low and behold they told us they were charging us a 30% gratuity to our original amount. Which ended up being $18. SO, the deal we thought we were getting by buying the voucher was NO deal at all. This has never happened to us before while using one of these vouchers. Needless to say, we won't be going back there again for this reason.

I know what you are thinking. Sushi.... In the rural south.... Yeah, right... It's like jumbo shrimp, military intelligence, or healthy fat. When most people think sushi in the US they think of a Japanese guy in San Francisco or Seattle or someplace on the west coast in an urban mecca. No one thinks that they will be eating it in a sleepy town like Petersburg. First Wabi Sabi is no ordinary small town south of the Mason Dixon line joint. The sushi is fresh. Everyone in my party of ten was pleased with the food they ordered. My non-sushi eating friend ordered a burger that he said was excellent. I stuck to veggie sushi, and I was very happy. You have to try Ty Ku sake. This may be the best sake I have ever had anywhere in the world. At $25 a bottle this is a bargain. Also go on Thursday because downstairs at 8:30 they have a karaoke DJ. Do not use the parking lot across the street. It is unpaved and has potholes bigger than my car. Instead go one block down turn right and use the public lot.

After the hire of a new sushi chef, the sushi made a complete 180! Instead of tasting like grocery store sushi, it tastes much better. Good atmosphere, good beer on tap.

I give this place an extra star only because it brings a cool option to a rather dead area. The food pricing is a little out of line with the portion sizes (on the sushi at least). The service was a little slow. I was also thrown off a little by the waitress calling to me from the bar to find out if I had made my wine selection? (It wasn't an empty dining room). The Wabi Sabi Wings are really good! The place is actually pretty large (2 levels). Would like to have gone when there was live music. Probably ok to take kids during the day. If you were entertaining guests from out of town and didn't want to drive all the way to Richmond I would say this would be a cute option. The downtown Petersburg area is cute cobblestone roads and some small businesses (once you get past the sketchy looking areas). I will be trying out a few more restaurants in the area soon.

  • Mathew W.

So for Petersburg, it is okay sushi. On Mondays they have 1/2 off sushi, on select rolls. It is cool downstairs but lacks service, especially downstairs

the only sushi place I know of in the area thankfully makes yummy sushi... with affordable sushi prices, good drinks selection, friendly staff and cool atmosphere, this place is a must visit. check it out...

Olde Towne Petersburg has a lot of potential (that I hope is realized), and Wabi Sabi is the type of restaurant that can help make the area successful. My wife loves sushi and I don't. We were both able to find something to our liking on the menu. The food is good, and the service is pleasant. We've been there twice, but we haven't been downstairs--maybe next time.

    (4)
  • Christine J.

I'm seriously blown away right now. I never imagined there would be such a wonderful sushi gem in Petersburg. I'm a Californian and we are definitely spoiled there with a great selection of affordable and delicious sushi, but I must say, wabi has just won me over. I mean, it seriously was the best sushi I HAVE EVER HAD!! The ingredients were super fresh, the waitresses were friendly and the place had an overall nice feel. I can't wait to go back!

Super nice servers. Great sushi and saki. Who would have thought there was a nice restaurant in petersburg?

    (5)
  • Dorothy K.

Wabi Sabi is okay. Service is not great downstairs, and their food is nothing exceptional. The one thing that is super yummy is the Artichoke Parmesan hummus with fried pita chips. yummy!

    (3)
  • Todd D.

Wow This place is outstanding. The food is really unique. We just had sushi but we ordered several types of rolls and they were all really good. One of the rolls that we ordered hand mango on it and it was so good. The service started out badly we walked in around 1pm and there was nobody in there we had to wait for the waitress to clear the table then we had to ASK her to wipe the table off after she was done. If you are ever in olde towne petersburg check this place out. They also have Tapas and other stuff which looked really good. Also there is a bar downstairs which looks cool.

OK folks, I always preface these things by saying I've been around and eaten in a lot of Michelin stars and divey bars. Wabi Sabi does not compete at any end of that spectrum. The sushi is pre-made grocery store quality and the rest of the menu is pretty awful as well. Went there one time and had the worst meal I've ever eaten and then was convinced to go back with work group for someone's going away party. Food was bad again. Yes, it has a funky little bar which has a clientele of new Petersburg tragically hip, wanna be tragically hip and the old stand by Billy Bobs and Earlenes thrown in for good measure. Kind of a strange mix of Apple-tinis and Miller Genuine Draft going on down there. But hey, if you want to get yourself a little gal with some hot piercings and a tramp stamp on her left boob then fellas this is your place. Gals, if you measure your man by the size of the rims on his pick up then this is likely a great spot for you too! But don't go there to eat.

  • Emily C.

Service here has always been excellent and the food is wonderful. It's nice (especially if you're dining with picky eaters) to have the range of sushi and soul food and just burgers in one spot (I know, I was skeptical about having multiple genres of food at first too, but they actually do pretty well on the different food styles). This is good for dinner or to just go grab a drink in the evening. They actually have live music on the weekends. My only critique is that the Mac and cheese is really greasy (like there was a pool of it. In the bottom of the dish) everything else, wonderful.

  • Kira S.

So many people rave about Wabi Sabi that I didn't think it was posible to be that good. I've eaten there twice and been floored each time. First time I got the sushi (SS something) and it was perfect. I often get that so stuffed feeling after sushi, but this was a great portion that didn't weigh me down. The second time I got a pasta dish (white wine, caramelized onions, and you could pick your protein) and got salmon on it. The salmon was sushi grade and prepared medium rare (uncooked but warm in the middle) and all the tastes went perfectly together. The staff was always nice and helpful with little chats beyond the mandatory "hope you are having a great evening" All the sushi chefs smile and acknowledge you as you walk by and wait staff were knowledgeable about the menu and suggestions.

I had dinner here with a large group last night. I had a few Kiran draft beers, lamb sliders, a spicy tuna roll, and a spicy lobster roll. The lamb sliders with yogurt dipping sauce were the highlight of the meal--spicy, well-seasoned, and satisfying. Both sushi rolls were subpar. They were small, the rice was over-cooked, and the flavor and freshness of the fish were both disappointing. I also thought the beers were a little on the pricey side given the location. Overall I would return if in the area and not order the sushi. This place is trying to do two very distinct cuisines well--American and Sushi--and based on my looks around the table, they had done a great job with the former but the jury was out on the latter. Review score is closer to 3.5 stars.

I'm not a sushi fan, but I've known and gone into Wabi Sabi many times over the years. My first time eating the food was very recently for my mom's retirement ceremony party. Firstly, it was amazing. A simply fantastic venue (we had the upstairs side bar), great and attentive staff (we had one lady working on our entire 30+ group, she was always moving, never complained and was down right AMAZING). I had the chicken alfredo pasta dish thing and it was superb - far better then I thought a pasta dish would be at at a Sushi bar. All of the food we had was really good and I heard no complaints. My friend adored the lobster mac and cheese and everyone said the french fries were to die for. We went back the next night for a friend's band playing downstairs. I really do love downstairs more, it's very historic feeling in the basement area; but I really hate when bands play because it just is such a small venue for a band so I generally only go if my friends are playing or if no one's playing.

We were a big group, and by big I mean a little more than 20. And yet service was fast although not super friendly, and each of us got separate checks! Now about the sushi rolls, they have some crazy ones that are definitely not your ordinary rolls, and the two I got were delicious. Would be back if I'm in the area!

Every sushi roll I have ever had here has been amazing. They have something for everyone. From basic rolls, vegetarian rolls to rolls with everything on it under the sun. They all work perfectly together. I've had a few of the non sushi items as well and they are great. I love the sweet potato fries. The crab dip is awesome but you get such a small portion. They have an excellent drink menu. Service can be a bit slow at times but it is always friendly.

So my husband orders a softshell crab sandwich and it is all batter and full of grease. We proceed to let the manager know and he says that once we order something, it cannot be returned or taken off the bill (whether we like it or not). I have never heard of a policy like this and will not be returning unfortunately. Update** the SERVER had to come over and correct the manager's mistake. Smh...this is a very odd set up but I am grateful that the server took the time to listen to our complaint.

Sorry no pictures which is so unlike me. This is perhaps the #2 restaurant in all of the area, beating out the long list of chain restaurants. The burger (not sushi) appealed to me and I went for it. Unfortunately it was way undercooked. They corrected it. And Voilà! it was one of the best burgers I've had in a long time! I asked for my tab and I especially loved the "ladies pour" at $3/a wine glass. A decent wine at that. Highly recommend this place!

service was great even though there was 1 server for the entire place. The FOOD WAS TERRIBLE!!! Our friend and I got burger and salmon burger. Buns were days old and dry, salmon was dry and chewy. I did tell them but they didn't bother taking it off the Bill. This place is confusing. It says tapas, but not one tapa on the menu, it's an American/sushi place. Other people walked out raving about the sushi, but I wouldn't trust their palates. I have eaten at world renowned Michelin star sushi restaurants, real sushi. THIS PLACE SERVES AMERICAN SUSHI WITH A THOUSAND AND ONE SAUCES ON IT. Don't go for food unless u like that kind of sushi (my hubs liked it), but the martini bar looked cute. IDK.. I wouldn't go back. they were appreciative of the feed back, so we didn't get any bad service. It's like they know they r struggling, but IDK if they r super open to some changes. Like choose one type of cuisine and master it. #helpgordonramsayyourtheironlyhope

I usually eat at Wabi Sabi every couple of months. Petersburg doesn't have a ton of great options, though more are popping up recently, and Wabi Sabi is definitely one of the highlights of Old Towne. I love the ambiance of Wabi Sabi of the old building, the exposed brick, and the local art pieces for sale. There is usually live music on the weekends and often other events throughout the week. I have never had a bad meal at Wabi Sabi. I usually order an appetizer to share, a roll of sushi, and sometimes a dessert to share. Last night, I had the tempura fried green beans for the first time, which I would definitely recommend. The food always tastes good, the prices are fair, the service is usually prompt, but the portions can be a bit small. The only reason for the 4-star instead of the 5-star is the portion size. After splitting an appetizer, eating my own sushi roll, and splitting a desert, I was still slightly hungry when I left last night (and I do not eat a lot.) My boyfriend had a dozen oyster rockefeller last night and said they were quite good as well. I would definitely recommend Wabi Sabi to a friend and will return again in a month or two.

No one in our party had sushi which is their specialty, but we all enjoyed our entrees and appetizers. We had everything from Edamame to wings to seafood to burgers. Food was good and the service was great! Local band plays every Wednesday night and they were awesome! We had a great time and we will be back!

I love the recently updated menu! New lunch specials, sushi, appetizers, and Martini selections! Staff is friendly as always. I've been eating here several times a week now. I'm currently hooked on the sake salmon nigiri!

I have been here several times. The service is usually very friendly and attentive. The sushi is fresh and tastes wonderful. It has never disappointed. They have many delicious rolls. I can also bring my non sushi living friends here. Their wraps are very tasty. And both the crab dip and the crab soup are amazing!! Both are full of fresh crab. I can not recommend the food more. I go r5 minutes out of my way to enjoy it.

Went to this spot this summer. I went during the day and it was practically empty. Nice looking place though. I ordered oysters, the surf-n-turf sushi rolls and the crab soup. Ima keep it a buck with you, all the food was bangin. RNS I recommend it to anyone in the area. This place could prob survive in NYC tbh its that good.

  • Beth J.

The portion sizes were disappointingly small despite the prices. You expect to pay a little more to go out for sushi, but you also expect to feel satiated at the end of the meal. After an appetizer, salad, 2 rolls, and sashimi, we both had to have a snack after dinner because we were still hungry. The staff was very friendly but did not seem knowledgeable about the ingredients in their menu items, and the fish did not taste like it was the freshest. Overall, I think the restaurant has a beautiful interior and friendly staff, but I am not sure this would be my destination for sushi.

  • Terrence W.

I absolutely love this restaurant. I had the Miso Soup, Steak Gyro, and Side Salad with Ginger Dressing. The soup was flavorful and a good size. the Gyro was excellent. the Steak was very flavorful. It was shaved which almost made me order the chicken for fear it would be tough and over cooked. I was estatic that it was tender and heaped on. There was a lot of cheese, not the few crumbles that you get when resturants skimp. Best of all it wasn't drowned in Tiziki Sauce, restaurnts will do that to hide the dry meat. The salad was fresh, and the Ginger Dressing is outstanding. My Server was polite, helpful, and attentive without being smothering (I like to read the news at lunch).

On my way to a restaurant, I noticed this sushi place and had always wanted to see what's going on. Finally made it there, staff were friendly and we were seated right away. My friend wasn't feeling the miso but the sweet potato fries were good. I ordered the dragon roll and they were ok. Was expecting an amazing meal but I was disappointed. Prices were decent but I won't recommend eating there everyday unless you want to. Its a decently spacious dining and bar if you want to bring a midsize crowd with you.

The food is quite amazing there! The services were great as I was greeted by the hostess. The waitress was great! Gracefully, the hostess showed me the way where the table was reserved. The sushi was quite fresh. Everything they make is excellent! Great place for to be in middle of nowhere! Check it out if you are in Petersburg, VA!

There is a lot to like at Wabi Sabi. There are three separate areas. Dining, Dining w/ Bar, and Dining w/ Stage. The stage is downstairs, and I didn't check it out this trip. I will definitely give it a look on my next visit. The tables are well spaced, without making the place look empty. The tables are large and inviting to parties of four or more. The ceilings are high and open the place up. Which brings us to one of two draw backs that I came across: The place is loud. The voices bounce off the hard surfaces. Even though the place was not crowded when I was there, the conversations from the other tables made talking at a normal volume level somewhat problematic. I had the Volcano Roll and the Rainbow Roll. My friend hand the Catipilar Roll and the Teriyaki Ahi. We loved each item. For some reason though (issue number two) both of my sushi rolls were on the same plate. It just looked crowded. It still tasted GOOOOOD. The menu was very diverse with a broad selection of sushi and cooked items as well. With four separate items all being good, I can't wait to try five, six, and seven. So much more to sample. The super friendly waitresses and bar tender will help with my next selections, I am sure. Oh, and there seems to be plenty of parking on the street or in two lots next to and across the street from the building. Enjoy!

Service is hit or miss. Ordered take out and was told it would be 10 minutes. It took over half an hour. Usually when I dine in, I get a server who is either really new or just lazy. Overall the sushi is good. The service is just shitty.

Wabi Sabi is a Petersburg hit! By far the best place I have dined in the area. Located in the historic area of downtown, Wabi Sabi has a diverse menu ranging from sushi to hamburgers. With this large menu - everyone in your group should be able to find something they like. The downstairs and the bar area lends a casual, but trendy atmosphere. There is karaoke on Wednesday nights (not sure which other nights) and was quite busy. I have been here two different nights with a large group. The second time I made a reservation for a birthday party. They were VERY accommodating. Put the ice cream cake in the refrigerator for us, brought out a server and extra utensils. All sounds rather "simple", but I have had many events where the servers and establishment weren't nearly as accommodating. We REALLY appreciated the service and hospitality which is no small feat with such a large party. The price is very reasonable too. We definitely plan to return.

Yelpers, this place is amazing. Went here with my battle buddy for martini monday. Walking in was like time travel..kinda..this place had a warm welcoming relaxation feel, walking in just calmed and relaxed me...if that makes sense to you. It was around 7 and we were told to sit anywhere on the three floors...say what??? Lol. We had a seat by the bar. We looked over the menu and had our martinis, I started off with the electric lemonade.YUM. I ordered the rainbow roll and TNT rolls. The best sushi I have ever had . Plus the martinis... My favorite place while I'm in town. I can not wait for Monday to go again. this is a ladies night out type of place or a little romantic spot to eat some good sushi and relax. Best restaurant I've been to in general here near fort lee.

The sushi here is not for the gluten/wheat sensitive. The waitress informed me that the rice is cooked with a vinegar that has wheat listed (and they will probably not change that). I was so disappointed as I was really looking forward to sushi especially since they use REAL crab in some of the rolls and I am allergic to imitation crab that other places use. The sushi my husband ordered looked really delicious. He seemed to enjoy it enough and I was envious since I couldn't eat it due to the wheat in the rice. There was only one dish that I could eat which was the soft shell crabs. I had extra veggies in place of the rice. The veggies were overcooked/soggy and had too much seasoning. My husband felt the same way about his veggies and he didn't care for the taste of the rice. The crabs were just fine. It was my first time eating soft shell crab like that and I didn't mind it. They were very mushy though. The best part of them is the body but it's so small that it only takes 2 bites to eat it. One bite was very strangely fishy compared to the rest of it. That might just be the way crab is though. I wouldn't know. I do appreciate that they worked to accommodate my food sensitivities. The waitress was a sweetheart and was very patient with me. I don't expect much from restaurants when it comes to dealing with food sensitivities but I am thrilled when a place tries hard. We usually call ahead to make sure a restaurant is comfortable dealing with allergens which we did with Wabi Sabi before we arrived. The location is nice. I enjoyed being there even if I couldn't eat much. They had pretty good music playing. If they remove the wheat from the rice then I would go back there in a heartbeat to try the sushi. My husband and I would probably eat there 2 times a month or more if I could eat the sushi.

Outstanding! Worth the drive from Chesterfield. Great atmosphere, great spirits, service, live music and ahi terriaki tuna I can't find in Richmond. Gay or straight this is a destination Don't pass this up. Nice historic part of town with parking. So glad I got stood up on blind date nearby. Thanks.

TNT roll is amazing; must have. Cool little basement bar. Tried several things on app menu and all were pretty good. Bartenders are very attentive and friend. Seems as if it may have changed management lately. New items on menu, look great.

I love this place!! I have been here several times and it's always a good experience!! I prefer to sit downstairs where there is live music several nights a week. The servers and bartenders are friendly and helpful with suggestions. The atmosphere is cool with funky artwork and exposed brick walls. The sushi is yummy!! Tonight I had the dragon roll (tempura shrimp, eel, cream cheese, avocado, scallions) spider roll (soft shell and lump crab, scallions) and mango roll (mango, avocado, cream cheese, toasted coconut). Yummy!!!! More please!!!!

I work in the Fort Lee area and this is definitely one of my staple lunch spots in town. Every time I go there the service is wonderful and the food is to die for. The sushi is always fresh and rolled to perfection and tastes delicious! When I go I usually get the South Seas roll. This amazing 8 slices of heaven has tempura shrimp, strawberries, cream cheese, topped with kiwi, coconut, eel sauce, and mango. I was quite skeptical at first but the person I was with told me to be adventures and I'm so glad I took his advice. This roll turned out to be sweet and savory with the perfect hint of glamor. The best part, in my opinion, about this place is that it caters to people who not only are sushi lovers but lovers of all food. One of my co-workers doesn't eat sushi at all but enjoys going there for the teriyaki chicken and sometimes even the plan old chicken fingers or hamburger. For happy hour this place serves some great drinks and has a few nice drink specials. Monday's here are the best because one of their specials is $1 off every roll. :) They have a few lives bands that play there on a normal basis which give the place a nice atmosphere. The most surprising part about this little gem in the heart of Old Town Petersburg is that they have a downstairs bar area. It's nothing super special but the fact that they are able to run and maintain a nice martini bar and a casual bar downstairs with different music is quite interesting to me. Basically this place is perfect for anyone. I would highly recommend it.

I am definitely a fan of the live entertainment. Although I heard how amazing the sushi is I was not really impressed. The next time we stop in I will give other menu options a try. I liked our waitress she was informative and friendly.

Nice place, food is decent. Bad service. Charge .50 for lemon?? Cup of tea is 2.00 no refill. Sat down and waited service for 5mins. My waitress is lazy. We can see her standing there have her arm crossed talking to her coworker.

Amazaballs. Had grilled lamb for appetizer and then Manhattan sushi roll for lunch. Service, food and cleanliness all on point. Highly recommend. This was my 2nd time here within a week and had the same thing. Slightly overpriced in my opinion for the sushi though. Overall it was....Amazaballs.

Sushi was delicious. Had the Rainbow Roll and Spicy Tuna Roll! Really fun environment with a great wait staff!! Nikki us an exceptional waitress! Only thing that kept this from 5 stars was the amount of garlic in the hummus. Not to shabby...

Tonight we had the lobster bisque,Wabi Roll and clam linguine. The lobster bisque had good flavor but salty. ( too much lobster base) wabi rolls was good but nothing special for $9.50. I had the clam linguine which was flat in flavor ...the sauce was watery. Maybe a little white wine and garlic butter would have helped.I've never had pasta made with mozzarella. Maybe sticking with the classic Parmesan would have saved this dish... - Harris Teeter Chef

I have been here many different times and have tried many different rolls but the TNT is my favorite. I like the fact that there are different settings in the restaurant from the martini bar to the basement where there is entertainment on the weekends. The staff has always been friendly and helpful. There has been times when it is very crowded that the service was a little slow but that I guess is to be expected. This is one of the restaurants that have improved downtown Petersburg the last few years.

My husband and I have been going to this restaurant in oakland, I think the food is quality and the service is really great. We spent new years eve there not that long ago and had a great time. The upstairs is a great martini bar and then downstairs you have a preference of music in several different genres on different nights. All in all it is a great experience and everything from the terrific burger to fresh made sushi is always surprising and delicious. The owner is an amazing person who takes care of his customers with a personal touch. Something you don't find everywhere. We love this place !!

After a negative experience at another Petersburg restaurant, we happened upon this place and were very pleasantly surprised for an impromptu Friday night dinner. We got fast, friendly and efficient service in a lovely family-dining environment. We loved the lamb meatballs (little bit spicy) and the Japanese-inspired chicken wings. The sushi was fresh and tasty..,we liked the spicy tuna the best, although salmon and avocado was a close second. Choose this place right away if you want a good meal at a fair price, and aren't interested in waiting 45 minutes to sit down for dinner. The happy hour pricing for rail drinks is another real plus -- gin and tonic did not skimp on the gin! Loses only one star because of lackluster California rolls -- not as fresh and crunchy as they should be. Still overall a more than solid choice.

My first time. Service very good Halloween night due to the fact the staff were in costumes. A great selection of traditional sushi and I guess fusion. The bar and drink menu were on point. l enjoyed myself with a live piano player in the dining area who could sing. The option to go downstairs to a bar which features local bands is a very good option. I wish I had a chance to go a second time.

I have been patronizing Wabi Sabi for over 6 years now. And maybe it's outgrown me. They have expanded in a wonderful way venue wise. Martini bar is nice for a quiet date or cocktails, original section is good for groups of friends. But downstairs is where the party is, live music all the time. However the prices have gone up yet the service and food have remained the same. I only go there to go now if I have a serious sushi craving because it's only a block from my apartment. Otherwise I try Hokkaido they have a surprisingly creative sushi menu

Never come back again. Service is good, taste is OK, volume is too small and price is too expensive, and manager of the restaurant is terrible. As everything was super small, I had to order four dishes with one beer, which costs $55+. But worst impression comes in the end when I see the bill with unknown food named "Tekka". I asked manager about it as I never order that one. Manager told me "Even you did not order it, you have to pay for it as you already ate it". I ordered tuna roll but tuna roll and "Tekka" was on the same plate as if entire foods is tuna roll, which is the reason I never recognized there are two different menu on the same plate. This is the first time I put $0 for tip at the restaurant and I warn all of you that there are many restaurants in this area which has better service, taste, and price.

I think the most enjoyable part of our experience was knowing the movie "Lincoln" was filmed on the street the restaurant resides. I will say the look upstairs was done well. A combination of trendy and rustic, and its pulled off pretty well. downstairs was darker and had kinda of a pub look with pictures that didn't match...but at least it was good artwork from some of the local artists. Staff: It took a while to be greeted and seated. Because of our group size we were placed downstairs so our server was the bartender. She was nice and mixed drinks well but it would have been better to have a separate wait staff downstairs. Food: OK we live in the VB area with plenty of fresh fish and great sushi so I'll just say this place ain't that. Hopefully there's a better sushi place in town. The rest of our meals weren't anything special, in fact I would say it wasn't any better than a TGI Fridays and as far as the salad goes, worse. I think the Tempura Fried Green Beans was the best thing we had. Overall: I was excited to come to here from the reviews and the look of the place when we walked in but unfortunately it didn't pan out. Although I don't get out to Petersburg very often I don't think I'll be stopping here, 3 Stars.

7 white guys and one black guy in the kitchen out to prove they don't know what sushi is. The non-traditional items (like the lamb chop could get 3-4 stars.). Maybe give up calling yourself a sushi bar and just be a bar or restaurant. Do at least one thing well.

First time here and it was pretty good! I think they were understaffed, but that didn't make our experience any less enjoyable. The people that were working, though you could tell they were a little stressed they handled the evening with professionalism and grace. Now for the food, the sushi, from what I've tried is really good the rest of the menu is...interesting. I find it strange that sushi is literally the only Asian style food on the menu, everything else has absolutely no Asian influence whatsoever. Not that that's a bad thing per say, it's just that it's called Wabi Sabi, so my initial thought is, "Ooo! Japanese grub!" But not so much. The other food is still good it's just not...well...Asian. I had the blackened Salmon burger, which is a filet with avocado, tomato and lettuce, no sauce, which bothers me. The fish tasted great but really needed like a sweet sauce to marry with the flavor of the fish. So I used some leftover ginger dressing from my friend's salad and it was perfect. Come to realize, they don't put sauces on any of their sandwiches! At least none of ours, none of the burgers came with any condiments, it was strange. My girlfriend's chicken alfredo was fantastic as well, it's better than 90% of the Italian restaurants in Chester! One footnote, try the tempura fried green beans, they are flippin' delicious! Besides the oddness of the menu I still really dig this place, next time I'm going to exclusively stick to the sushi and really give it try.

New to the area. Went here after hearing recommendations from co-workers. My boyfriend and I went on a Monday, which surprise to us, happens to be $1 off all sushi. We are originally from the Philadelphia area, so we have always had an excess of options for sushi that we had known for awhile. Wabi-Sabi was really good! We got 3 different rolls, and loved them all. The decor of the place is also unique. It's in historic Petersburg, and pulls in many of these historical elements in their decor. We will be recommending this place to our friends when they come to visit, as well as we will be returning customers.

I came here for lunch with my baby. We got the appetizers really quick. They were good, but I thought small portions for the cost. I had ordered two rolls for myself - and we waited. And waited. And I asked about it and the waiter came back and asked me what rolls I had ordered again. I ended up leaving without my rolls. Not thrilled with the service.

Family and I love this place. Everything is delish, hard to pick a favorite dish. So far like everything I ordered. Mango express roll, tempura fried roll, crab soup, loMein, jerk chicken, and more The place is clean, friendly and entertaining. Has 3 levels for dining and a Martini room that has Local music and comedy shows per scheduled.

Usually the food is great and the service is decent, went tonight for dinner and the place was just dead, downstairs was closed, and it actually seemed over staffed for the number of customers there. We ordered drinks and appetizers and our hostess served the drinks slowly and awkwardly while still wearing her coat? (If it's too cold for the hostess it's too cold for the patrons). Our second round of drinks took an eternity to come because the hostess was too busy serving herself a huuuuuge glass of wine ( made my by the glass wine seem pitiful) and she brought our glasses to the table one at a time because she was holding her own glass of wine in the other hand! The food was decent, but with the horrible service, it didn't really matter how good the food was. I'm beyond disappointed in what I used to consider a neighborhood staple.

The sushi is very good and not what you would expect in petersburg Virginia. The drink menu is extensive and the service is pretty good. I really enjoy the TNT roll and the who dat rolls. They have live music every weekend I think and it is pretty entertaining. The reason I am giving it 3 stars is because the owner is rude and I won't go back again because I refuse to give him anymore business. If you can avoid him wabi sabi is definitely worth the trip.

If you want sushi in petersburg this is about it. But it's not to bad. First time I went was on friday or saturday... packed... took for ever for the food... waitress forgot one of my rolls... not impressed. Just now I went on Sunday, almost no one there. Not bad. speedy enough. Steak sandwich was yum.

Reading over other reviews I'm not quite sure while positive ones were only given 4 stars. As far as sushi resturant go this is a great one. They have other dishes besides sushi but being from a larger city and relocating to the area, good sushi is hard to find. This place is a privately owned small business. The rolls and sushi options are unique and customized to the area by local favorites. Not like ordering a California roll at a chain. Everything is fresh made and delicious. My husband who had never even had sushi was really surprised when he tried it and liked it. (He's like an apprehensive kid) The service is professional and attentive. I have never been when they have live music but that is something we definately want to visit. There is plenty of room so you aren't cramped while dining. I felt like it deserved 5 stars.

Oh if only Petersburg was peppered with funky fun bars like this one.... Their food is decent with lots of fun choices (chicken strips with sweet and sour sauce is to die for). Sushi is good but overpriced, but mostly you must come here for the ambiance and great local acts (like Against Grace) they have on their tiny basement stage.

There is a lot to like about Wabi Sabi. It's almost like three restaurants in one with the three different seating areas. I haven't gone specifically for the music but I've been there when a band started and it was pretty good. The bands play downstairs usually, so if you don't want that experience, you can stay in the upstairs for a quieter experience. I have yet to have a bad roll at Wabi Sabi. I've never eaten off the entrée menu but the sushi rolls are good. They're well prepared and presented. The sushi is good quality and tastes fresh. There are only two sushi restaurants in this area and Wabi Sabi is definitely the better of them. I'd read reviews that the other was better, but I found that to definitely not be true. With that in mind, however, the only reason I give this restaurant 3 stars instead of 2 is because it's the only decent sushi in the area. I've had much much better sushi elsewhere. So, relative to what's offered in the area, 3 stars. The service is friendly and usually pretty prompt. I had one experience where my service was slow, I think because of a mix up in the kitchen. But even when they're busy the wait times are reasonable. Now the not-so-good stuff. The sushi is WAY overpriced for how small the rolls are. I've been living in Alaska where EVERYTHING is more expensive. My favorite sushi place there has similar pricing but their rolls are twice as big. One roll is a satiating meal there, where as the rolls here are not quite big enough to leave you feeling totally full. I always get done with my roll and feel like I'm not quite full. Like I need just a few more pieces to feel satisfied, but not another roll. If they were better priced, I'd probably order two, but I won't overpay for more than one roll. Any time I decide against going to Wabi Sabi for dinner, it's because of the pricing. The other (very) negative I have is based on one of my experiences at the restaurant. I often go with a group of friends, but the restaurant is close to my home so sometimes I swing by after working out for a quick bite to eat. On this particular night, the restaurant was pretty empty and I chose to sit at the bar in the basement. The only other person at the bar was an older gentleman who was obviously very intoxicated. At first he left me alone but eventually he started talking to me and even got up and moved over a few seats to sit next to me. I just wanted to have sushi and a beer in peace, but now I found myself entertaining a drunk man. From his conversations with the staff, I had gathered that the man worked at the restaurant and when he went to the bathroom, the bartender confirmed this and said that he was a good guy and was harmless. Thing continued to escalate, however, with the man getting mad at me that I wasn't paying 100% attention to him (at one point I checked my cell phone and he very aggressively told me to "put that thing down so we can have a conversation") and also being offended that I wouldn't give him a ride home. And finally, the man actually STUCK HIS FINGER in my food. Eventually the employees called him a taxi and he left, but not without ruining my experience. The worst part about it was that the people working behind the bar never apologized or tried to get the man to leave me alone. They just kept making excuses for him and saying he really wasn't a bad guy. That may be, but I had no interest in a strange drunk man flirting with me and putting his hands in my food. If I didn't crave sushi on a regular basis, this experience would have been enough to make me never return to the restaurant. Unfortunately, it's the only decent sushi restaurant within reasonable driving distance.

It was here that I discovered blue cheese stuffed olives for my dirty martini. I lucked up and caught the $5 special too! This place has a cool staff that mingles with the customer...makes you feel right at home. It has an upstairs area where sushi (SO GOOD) and fresh desserts are being made before your eyes at the bar. There's one bar area where you can see the oysters being shucked...they have some wonderful, fresh oysters! There is another bar downstairs which is sort of dimly lit and looks like a good spot to listen to some good music and dance. Everyone seemed to know each other by name here...that added a little something special to my whole Wabi Sabi experience. If you're ever in this neck of the woods...pay them a visit.

I have been there a number of times and last night was as good as the others. They had two performers upstairs and a band downstairs as well. The service was outstanding and the food was reasonably priced as well. Our order was correct and very tasty as well. I do like the selection of sushi and it looked as if they had expanded their regular menu as well. I will definitely be going back again.

Found this place on accident while searching for apartments in the area.... LOVE IT!!! The name i guess could be decieving, we expected something slightly different when we came in but were pleasantly surprised. This is my third time here, I've had the Ahi Tuna Salad twice (once with sesame tuna, once with blackened and both were amazing!!) we've ordered the spring rolls as an app twice (they're great!!) I don't know what my fiancé ordered the first time, but last time he ordered the black and bleu wrap.... A-MA-ZING!!! They were entering a Souper Bowl contest when we were in last and they offered us a free sample of their Thai Chicken Curry soup, YUM! They also gave us a sample of their crab soup..... if not for being in a public place, I'd have licked the bowl and spoons clean. Sooooo yummy. : ) The wait staff an management, they're great! They're attentive but never annoyingly so, I've never had to ASK for a refill on my drink, it's always just refilled when low. as far as the cooks and the sushi guy go.... NO, they're not Asian, NOTHING about them LOOKS Asian, but then again.... they don't claim anywhere to ever BE an Asian restaurant. It's a sushi :: tapas restaurant, the sushi is great and idk what tapas is, but if it's anything like what I've had that's on the rest the menu, it's probably delicious!!!

I really enjoyed this restaurant -- the sushi was pretty good, and the lemon drop martini I ordered was delicious. The interior is very nice and the basement has a cool vibe. Our waitress was awesome and made good suggestions. My only issue was the expense of the food. We got the crab dip for an appetizer for about $8. For that price I was expecting a pretty good amount of crab dip, instead it was about 1/2 a cup of dip with a ton of pita slices for dipping. We were kind of bummed about that. Also, we thought the sushi was a bit overpriced. However, we are from Southern California, so their prices might be standard for this area? It's the first time we've gotten sushi here so I can't be sure. We decided if we decide to go back again we will probably not order from the sushi menu. They have a ton of other options.

OMGosh the Wabi Sabi wings are AWESOME! The Sushi is made to order, the waitresses are friendly and on the weekends they usually have LIVE music. They just expanded the upstairs area and installed a bar. Worth the trip. There are also other quirky venues near the area. Fourth Friday's is Friday of the Arts. Tons of food and artsy merchants.

Great sushi by adding a twist of fruit to the rolls. My favorites had the kiwi and the mango in them. If you are not in the mood for sushi, you can get other items. My husband got the Wabi-sabi burger. Both selections were yummy! The location seems to be tucked in the historical area. The building itself was great! They have the main level and a lower level for the tavern. They did a great job with the decor and all the artwork downstairs is also available for purchase. The service was good and friendly. Next time we're traveling through, we will be back!

I had such high hopes for this place...but i should've known that when I saw it was a "Sushi and Tapas Bar"...expanding to be a Martini Bar, that this place is going to be a jack of all trades and a master of none. PROS -Our waitress was extremely pleasant and attentive. - The atmosphere was nice. There's open seating upstairs and downstairs at wooden booths and tables. -The smoked salmon was really good! In hindsight, I should just ordered a plate full of it. THE NOT-SO-PROS -The food is hit or miss. My date ordered the wasabi wings....those were actually good. Pretty tender. I'd recommend those. I ordered their "bruschetta". Such a mistake. The pita chips they came with were alright but otherwise...i'd like my money back. -The sushi. We ordered the Volcano Roll and the "Going Back to Cali Roll with Salmon" [i don't remember the exact name...it's probably subconscious]. The volcano roll was so-so. There was an obnoxious amount of rice so I'm unsure as what to was inside but it was topped with a variety of salmon, tuna, and whitetail, and also red peppers. The 'Going Back to Cali Roll' is just a california roll with what appeared to be seasoned salt sprinkled on top, then you had the option of adding salmon. Yay (-_-). Combine the seasoned salt with the salt already in soy sauce....and you've ruined the sushi. And the salmon they put on top was so thin and dry. I felt like I was being teased. No need to bash this place any further. It's a cool, trendy place to go if you want the atmosphere [which is understandable in Petersburg because there's not much there]...but if you want a yummy meal...head to Richmond.

Nice local takes on traditional rolls. Fish seems fresh. Spicy tuna is not over the top with Srirachi which is nice to see. I also like the way they smoke the salmon. Average pricing. Have come back three times to date and plan for more. Never saw any problems with service or cleanliness.

I usually cringe a little inside when I step into a Japanese restaurant in America and see nothing but gaijin behind the counter - and then look at the menu. Most of the time, my instincts are correct. Wabi Sabi is no exception. if you're here for non-Japanese food and drinks, have at it. Decent ambiance, bit loud, somewhat cramped layout, no big thing. If you're here for Japanese food and drink, you are in the wrong place. Sake selection is minimal, a victim of distribution chains over which the management has no control; how would you feel if the only American beer you could find overseas was a Bud Lite? The rolls are Americanized, a victim of being fried, handrolled into bricks, and then drenched with sauce. I can overlook the incongruity in naming - absolutely no way this restaurant should be named Wabi Sabi, a name which it most certainly does not deserve - but there are worse names for Japanese restaurants I've seen. I can overlook my order being an hour late on a group order. That's fine. The serving staff are two thumbs up. Polite, very respectful, very tolerant even in a natty downstairs area getting bombarded. Subpar sake selection, middling Japanese food selection, improper naming, menu items priced over quality delivered - the answer is 2 stars. This place is not a Japanese restaurant. This place isn't even a real Tapas bar. If lack of authenticity doesn't bother you and you can't goto Richmond for the night, have at it. You won't find anything else in town.

Just visiting Petersburg to see a friend, and had dinner last night. One of the best Dragon Rolls I have ever had, and I eat sushi weekly. The only downfall was the waitress was not the most informed about the menus and our food took half an hour to be delivered. Would definitely suggest this place to locals and visitors.

Manager is rude. We heard 5 different things from 5 different people regarding the underage person in our group on a weeknight. The manager argued with her staff in front of us, the customer, and then continued to with us. After we threatened to leave we were offered drinks and were disappointed to find that we were being served by the same rude manager we just encountered. Her fake smile and fake politeness was shallow and unwanted, especially since we were there to be served by a friend of ours. I highly doubt I will ever patronize this restaurant again despite the amazing menu and fantastic food and drinks, solely because the management needs and attitude adjustment.

Looking at the menu it is all over from burgers to sushi to Mac and cheese. I was worried that it was going to be a "jack of all trades and a master of none." I was surprised, the sushi was good and the crab Mac and cheese was ok as well. It is no morimoto, but it is good.

I consider this place more of an entertainment venue than a restaurant. I know they have a menu and serve lunch and dinner, but what truly makes this place special to me is the live band nights and their commitment to consistently offer great entertainment in this great area of Old Towne Petersburg. I make it a point to come here every time I visit the area. I just love the bar area because the bartenders are always very friendly........yep this is definitely one of my favorite's........oh and the food is good too:-).

I LOVE this place! I go in occasionally, and EVERY time, I'm greeted like a "regular"....as if I am special. That is primarily one of my main reasons for whether or not I'll give a service/place of business 5 stars. The food is amazing, whether it's the lamb or fried green bean apps, or the sushi....ooooh my, the sushi. I am still learning about it and getting a little more bold every time I go in, but I find the wait staff incredibly knowledgeable and unpretentious, just really helpful. I seem to always get the spring rolls and they never disappoint. I've had the Cali and Philly rolls, the mango and the volcano rolls. It does not matter, it's always fresh, tasty and yummy! They have seating in three areas; the main area as you walk in, DJ's Martini Bar, downstairs where there are brick walls and live music. No matter where I go, I always enjoy the ambiance. It's always just busy enough to have some background noise but quiet enough to have a conversation....unless you're downstairs on a weekend night! Can't expect a live band and convo, though. Clean environment, friendly staff, fresh and appealing menu. Not to mention the bartender who gave me a free drink last time. (Yeah, I was their guinea pig. Of course I knew it was going to be delicious.!) Yummy tropical drink embellished w/ a hot pink orchid, a slice of orange and cherries. Too bad my decrepit phone was broken, or I'd have uploaded the pictures. Highly recommended. Love them.

My wife and I stopped here for dinner on a recent road trip from Greenville, NC to my hometown of Annapolis, MD. We've driven I-95 a million times, and wanted to make a dinner stop that was not fast food based. This place was like a little hidden gem to us. This was our first visit to Petersburg, so we were a little worried when we exited 95, and drove through some run down areas and under 95. But then, as we came upon the little downtown historic area, our confidence in our decision was renewed. Wabi Sabi seems to have a lot of character, delicious food, and great service. Our server Tami was very friendly and attentive, and the sushi was above average. Downstairs, they had a Jazz Quartet playing and more seating, but sadly we couldn't stay. We were glad to discover this quaint area of shops and restaurants, and would definitely come back to Wabi Sabi again.

Decided to give this place a try since we live only blocks away. We went on a weekday around 1pm. Thought it was a cute funky place but was dissapointed that our food took forever. The service was slow so don't go when you are extremely hungry. Once our food came out it was very tasty but overpriced.

The decor has a very modern feng shui thing going on. Very nice, however, it would be nice if they would wipe down some of the shelves behind the seating, it was so dusty and had dead bugs all over it. We had to wait a VERY long time for food. Almost an hour for shrimp and grits and a few orders of sushi. Seriously, we were about to walk out. The shrimp and grits were delicious, but not distinctive enough to charge $15 for. The sushi was just okay, nothing really special. And the sweet potato fries were completely soggy, it was like eating sweet potato spaghetti. We'll give it another try but I'm not dying to go back anytime soon.

Caveat: It's Petersburg, VA. Yea that's right. I said it. And I'll say it again. It's PETERSBURG (remember, it's petersburg = R.I.P.). The "jewel" of the tri-town region. I walked in on a sleepy Wednesday night, and my first thought it: "Why does the sushi chef look like he's a guitarist in a failing, small town rock band." - maybe because he is. Just a thought. This place is hardly a sushi joint (R.I.P.). The menu consists of a variety of fish containing items, "tapas," hamburgers, and asian themed dishes. What's going on here? The portions were small. The prices were high for what they were. The food was mediocre. The waitress was annoying. The green tea was a mug with a bigelow tea bag in it. And when I asked for tea, she said "what kind?" What? Seriously? What other kind of tea would you drink at a sushi restaurant? Apparently the answer was: "Sweet tea, iced tea... bla bla bla" - R.I.P! We paid almost 50 bucks for two people to leave hungry. May a plague of locusts descend upon your restaurant so that others shall not waste their time here. The ugly bastard child of a failed fusion restaurant and a long john silvers. R.I.P. Do your self a favor: go to food lion and eat a plastic bag. Cheaper and tastier.

Decent sushi for being in the middle of a craphole town.

Hmm, I did not want to write about this place, while I was still here, because well, let's face it: Virginia's sushi selection is rather thin. I couldn't outright say this place sucks because I had nowhere else to go to. But now that I'm more or less halfway out the door from here, I can say that I have had particularly poor experiences with their sushi. Ever had hard avocado in a california roll? They really botched that one up on a number of occasions. Their unagi was acceptable, as was their tempura cali rolls. the spicy they used on their spicy tuna however, the opposite of exquisite. They poured way too much of the stuff on top of the rolls, and something about the taste seemed off. It should also be noted that this cannot be considered as a japanese restaurant, as it'd seem the only japanese items on the menu...was the sushi. Burgers, fries, and some type of a spring roll can also be found. I'm not going to hold that against them though, I do not think it was their intent to make this an authentic japanese spot. There are a few bright spots about it. The downstairs is a pub-esque setting, with an area for live music. It makes for a nice atmosphere, if that's what you're into. So here's the bottom line. I like sushi, and when it comes to the options of bad sushi or no sushi, I'll take whatever is available.
