This restaurant always evokes powerful memories for me. It is located at the intersection of East Virginia Beach Boulevard and Briar Hill Road, which leads to the Poplar Halls neighborhood where I grew up as a child. So far I have tried the following menu items, beginning with the appetizers. THAI FRESH ROLL (CHICKEN OR SHRIMP): "Mixed vegetables wrapped with rice paper, served with hoisin sauce." These are very similar to the rice paper spring rolls I enjoy at most Vietnamese restaurants. Many Thai restaurants in the area don't offer these. Instead, they only offer the traditional fried Thai egg rolls, which are served with the usual sweet and sour sauce, and which have never been to my liking. . I have enjoyed this item twice so far with the shrimp filling. An order comes with 4 thick and sumptuous rolls, filled with an array of vegetables that explode with a cascading array of colors. The rolls are tender, crunchy, and incredibly delicious. The hoisin sauce was divine. Shredded carrots and a carved radish are served on the side to accomplish an incredibly beautiful presentation. This restaurant has taken the rice paper rolls I prefer and elevated them to a level of quality I have never enjoyed anywhere else. They are honestly the best rice paper rolls I have ever enjoyed. My Rating: 5 Stars. THAI DUMPLING (6): "Steamed pork and shrimp with mushroom and water chestnut served with sweet soy sauce." These dumplings are often called Kanon Jeeb, and I have ordeed them at other Thai restaurants in years past. The dumplings are open-faced at the top, much in the same way as stuffed cabbages. Unfortunately, the ones I had here were a bit disappointing. Their textures were bit too tough for my tastes and lacked the melt in your mouth tenderness I remembered from the others. In addition, the water chestnuts as an included filling did not quite agree with me. If I could tweak their recipe a bit, I would eliminate the water chestnuts entirely and replace them with a greater concentration of ground pork and shrimp. My Rating: 3 Stars TOM YUM SHRIMP SOUP: "Lemongrass soup with gllangal and cilantro, mushrooms, tomatoes." I ordered a small bowl and throughly enjoyed it. The broth and the flavors were delciious, and the shrimp pieces were plump and sumptuous. The flavors did tend to trail off a bit toward the end, and I probably need to order a large bowl sometime to give it a more accurate rating. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. Among the entrees I have tried: WILD SIAMESE: "Choice of beef, pork, or chicken stir-fried with string beans, basil leaves, bamboo shoots, bell peppers, onions, and rhizone in red chili paste." I have ordered this twice so far with chicken as my choice of meat. I ordered it "Thai hot" both times and was not disappointed. The heat level and flavors of all the ingredients were all on point. A beautiful and tender carved cucumber was served on the side to add to its presentation. My only criticism was that it came with a little too much sauce for my tastes. Indeed, sometimes less is more. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. WOON SEN: "Shrimp and chicken, stir-fried with bean thread noodles, mixed vegetables, and egg." Bean thread noodles are also known as cellophane noodles, which are available in most Asian grocery stores. My mother used to cook these and taught me how to cook them at an early age. For some reason, these noodles are scarce on the menus of most of our local Asian restaurants. I've ordered this entree twice so far, once for a take-home order and once for a dine-in order. The noodles for my take-home order were too oily for my tastes. Fortunately, this was not the case with my dine-in order. The shrimp, chicken, and vegetables which accompanied this dish were sumptuous and delicious. If I could tweak their recipe a bit, I would add a stronger presence of fried garlic, which is included in some Thai recipes for Woon Sen I have read elsewhere. My mother made hers with plenty of fried garlic and ginger root as well. My Rating: 4 Stars. BASIL FRIED RICE: "Choice of chicken, pork, beef, (or Shrimp), stir fried jasmine rice with basil, bell pepper, and onion." I ordered mine with chicken, which turned out nicely. The rice was fluffy and flavorful. If I could adjust the recipe, I would add a greater proportion of bell peppers and onions to strike a greater balance by adding a little more crunch. Otherwise, it was delicious. My Rating: 4.5 Stars. The service here is friendly, gracious, and accommodating. A small bowl of complimentary soup also came before each of my dine-in entrees arrived, with my last one being a very flavorful chicken and rice. The owners and staff members work extremely hard here and take a great amount of pride in their business.. Sometimes I drive by before they open for lunch and see the female owner hard at work washing the windows. In closing, this is overall the best Thai restaurant I have tried so far within the city limits of Norfolk.

One of my favorite restaurants! My friend, who is Thai, had me try this dish "Yum Woon Sen" which are glass (rice) noodles over a bed of lettuce, with shrimp and minced chicken, along with peppers and onions, then covered in chili fish sauce. WOW. Luckily they're expeditious with the water refills, since I was feeling the heat on "mild." Hurt so good, though! Always amazing tastes and pretty presentations. The environment is very serene inside and decorated with lovely items from Thailand. The staff is super polite and gracious. Coming at the noon lunch rush can make you late back to work, so it's best to come at 11:30am or 1pm. This is the best kept secret of E. Virginia Beach Blvd.

I've been here several times now and definitely recommend trying this "hole in the wall" Thai restaurant when you're in the Military Highway/Circle/Janaf area. The staff is always friendly and accommodating, but if you're in a hurry I recommend coming in around peak meal times. We went for lunch today and it was a bit busy with only one server working, but the staff was very sensitive to this and did their best to get orders out as soon as possible. I usually base a good Thai restaurant on their pad thai and their Thai iced tea, which are both delicious here! I strayed from my usual chicken pad thai and ordered the shrimp pad thai. The pad thai itself is very flavorful and filling with just the lunch portion. My only complaint was that the shrimp wasn't seasoned enough and was a little undercooked. I've had shrimp here before and it was delicious so I'm going to chalk it up to the kitchen trying to get food out as quick as possible.

Staff is very friendly. Food is basically bomb (dot) com and they have the best looking and tasting fried cheesecake I've ever seen. Please try the Thai iced coffee, personally Im not a fan of iced coffee, but their's was actually flavorful without being a sugary, syrupy mess. I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu and they aren't stingy with the proportions either; had a get a take out box.

This place was absolutely delicious!!!! I am brand new to the area and I love my Thai food. I had the Panang Curry and Tom Yum and Thai Dumplings. Absolutely incredible, this will be my go to place for sure!!!! Highly recommend : ) and the service was exceptional : )

Came here for lunch and there was only a table of four around noon. I ordered the typical Thai iced tea, spring rolls, and yellow curry. Everything was delicious...the Jasmine rice was moist and tender(as it should be), not like what you get at other Asian restaurants. Service was polite and attentive but towards the end, there were 5 more tables that came in so the two servers kind of neglected to ring me up. A gentleman, who I assumed was the owner/cook, came out of the kitchen and made eye contact with me and offered to ring me up. Still, this slight oversight did not affect my 5 star rating at all. If only this place was close to my house, i would visit more often.

This is such a well kept secret. I happened across this cozy spot on my way to another restaurant. I had never noticed it and it's within walking distance of my home! It was love at first smell. The aromatics alone are worth a trip. They have pretty large menu and everything that I have tried has been great. They have a chicken wing appetizer) Spicy chicken wings with spicy basil sauce Omg! That sauce is to die for. To top it the service is great as well. The staff is super friendly and are willing to make changes to most of the menu items as I have a low tolerance to spice. They never complain and are always happy to help.

I found this wonderful little gem of a Thai restaurant here on Yelp while visiting from out of town. It's quite lovely inside and the staff was so very friendly. There's a great selection on the menu of many things to try. I love curries and was pleased to find they offered a mango curry. We also ordered the curry puffs and garlic chicken. We were pleasantly surprised to find we got complimentary soup since we were ordering at lunch. The soup was a corn soup and it was so fresh. Well worth ordering by itself. The other dishes we ordered were fantastic! As someone that is familiar with excellent Thai cuisine, I definitely recommend that you give this place a try...you won't regret it!

After an extremely long day (which may have involved running 13 miles in 94% humidity), all we wanted to do was laze around our hotel room. When it got towards dinner time, we decided to order takeout in order to get back to lazing as soon as possible. After a quick search on Yelp (okay, maybe not so quick...I'm bad at deciding) we settled on Sawasdee. My girlfriend remarked that she was getting good feelings as we saw restaurant workers collecting herbs from the (decently sized) garden out back as we pulled up. Happily, those good feelings were justified. We got the Thai Fresh Rolls with shrimp, Drunken Noodles with chicken, and Mango with Sticky Rice. The Thai Fresh Rolls were delicious - summer rolls, with a choice of chicken or shrimp. The veggies were fresh and tasty, and the rolls were huge, and packed and constructed well. The Drunken Noodles had plenty of kick and came in a generous portion. I did think that the noodle texture was a tiny bit off, but the flavor was great. Mango with Sticky Rice was a just the right way to finish the meal. The mango was super ripe and the rice had a perfect consistency. Oh, and their Thai Iced Tea was great too! Our total came out to just over $30, and the serving sizes were huge - we couldn't even finish everything. Great value, great Thai food, would definitely recommend!

I am absolute fan of Thai cuisine because of the strong aromatic components and spicy edge not to mention the great flavor, texture, color and taste of the dish. I've been in few places in Virginia Beach and Norfolk but in my opinion this is the best and authentic Thai restaurant. There is slight criticism of the dish but overall the food profile and essence of Thai cuisine is definitely represents. For the sake of the restaurant owner, some of the parang or foreigners are not into fish sauce; would highly suggest to ask the customer how they want to prepare the dish. Papaya salad could have been better if the add a bit of acidity. Pad thai on the other hand is quite a bit dry specially the beef and last but not the least the curry dish is thin. Special chef menu is available. Golden shrimp is rocki'n!!! I will definitely visit this place very often. Have a great experience y'all. Cheers^_*

I can't believe i haven't written a review for this miraculous well kept but discovered secret of mine! Best Thai food in all of Norfolk. From pad Thai to pad see-ew to Tom yum soup to green curry chicken etc... Pretty much anything you order from menu is made fresh out of an authentic Thai kitchen. The lady server never lets your glass of water go empty and is very attentive to your needs. Lunch is cheaper than dinner, but regardless, the food is worth the price! The only thing is they do not deliver. But if I'm craving Thai food, you bet I'll get up off my ass and walk in the cold or rain to my car and drive the 15 minutes to pick up this deliciousness!

The Thai iced tea was the best ever. And I have enjoyed an array of entrees (beautifully presented, btw) and a couple of appetizers -- potstickers being my fave. Service is pretty present and on point. There's a table/booth in the corner long enough to fit a party of ten. And I deem this my second favorite Thai restaurant.

Love this place. This Thai restaurant is the closest to being authentic Thai food(coming from a Thai person who makes Thai food at home to eat 90-95% of the time). My kids love their Tom Kha Gai(chicken coconut soup) and my husband loves their fried rice. I always get something different every time we go eat there and all of their food have been great. I always order all my food Thai style so that they make it extra flavorful. I would recommend this place to everyone.

Some of the best Thai food in Norfolk. Wonderful spicy curries to basic stir fry dishes leaves something for everyone. Lovely restaurant and friendly waitstaff add to a pleasant dining experience. Also great for take out.

Nice atmosphere, friendly waitress and staff. The establishment is very clean and the plate garnish almost looks like art. I've been here a few times and I always get the Orange chicken, it's crispy and I love the sauce. The only thing keeping me from giving it a higher rating is that whenever I try a little bit of my friends dishes or venture out and buy an appetizer or desert, I don't seem to like it. It takes more than one dish to get me to praise a resurant. And every time I try something other than the orange chicken I'm left dissappointed. I was more impressed eating at Bangkok Garden out in Ghent.

The first time I went here I had the orange chicken. It was so fresh and so delicious that I ordered it as take out a week later. I was late picking up my take out so it was not as hot and as fresh but delicious still. The vegetables are always steamed to perfection and their sauces are great. The third time I ate in again to enjoy the hotness and the freshness. I ordered the cashew nut chicken. It was a perfect blend. Highly recommend the Thai ice tea as well if you like chai.

  • Donielle W.

Nicely decorated restaurant. I ordered mango sticky rice for take out. The sticky rice itself was average, but the mango was perfectly ripe. The sticky rice wasn't as sweet and didn't have the usual white cream on top. The do offer a 10% military discount. That's always a plus!

First time in, and the food was excellent, and the service was phenomenal! Will definitely be returning, my fiancé was even given complimentary soup since I had ordered Tom Yum. Super nice experience :)

I had their chicken wings and drunken noodles for dinner (my accompanying friend loves chicken wings). Both tasted great. Obviously those are only 2 dishes and small sample size but for now the rating stands. Portions are large and prices reasonable. Service was excellent.

The best drunken noodles with tofu I've had thus far! I was looking for a quick bite before I headed to airport and found this place. The interior is nicely decorated and the staff is quiet but friendly. Like I said, best drunken noodles with tofu ever! The thai iced tea was sweet but not too sweet so it was perfect. Unfortunately, the tom yum goong was way too limey. All I could taste was sour and lime. It was bad but I've definitely had better. Another thing to note is that the staff was very concious of my order. I told them I didn't want to have mushrooms in my drunken noodles and later they came back and asked if I wanted the mushrooms in the tom yum goong. How awesome are they?! Great staff, great food, and great ambiance. This is highly recommended from an out of towner.

There are times I wish we could divide grades between service/atmosphere and food. I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch. The staff here are very polite, the service is terrific, the restaurant is very pleasant, and food comes out quick. When we arrived they were packed but we got seated right away. The food is a different story. It isn't bad, it's just very average. I expect a certain profile in Thai cuisine. Spicy, sweet, sour, and slightly salty in each bite. The great Thai food I've had also has that great mouth feel of fresh produce and succulent meat. The taste profile here today was flat. We started with papaya salad and the golden shrimp. The papaya salad was heavy with fish sauce, not to the point it was fishy but it overwhelmed the citrus. The papaya and other veggies were fresh which saved the salad. The golden shrimp where the highlight of the meal, probably why they were the special today. For the main I had the green chicken curry, my friend had the Penang curry, and we split the Beef Pad Thai. This part of the meal was where the profile fell flat. My curry was thin and sweet. I didn't put chili sauce in but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have helped. The Pad Thai was bland. We added lime and chili but it didn't help much. Based on the crowd and my initial impression I'll chock it up to it being the end of the lunch service. I will try this place again.

When it comes to Thai food, I'm pretty easy to please. Generally speaking, I've found Thai restaurants to have a large menu, fast service, reasonably priced food with plenty of flavor. Sawasdee is no exception. I stopped by for the first time with four other yelpers who shared apps and desserts, so I got to sample six items in addition to my choice of Fresh Spring Roll and Fried Eggplant with Tofu. Pretty much "yum" all across the board. Our fearless leader, X made sure to ask for the spice tray that included 4 options to take the heat up. The subsequent dessert was a much needed cool down. Great thai tea, too.

I ordered Yam Woon Sen and Thai pork dumplings. Yam Woon Sen is fresh, really fragrant of fresh cilantro and mint. The taste was very balanced and to my liking.

I love Thai food. I'm constantly looking for someone who is willing to put up with my Thai food obsession, and that person here in Virginia is my good friend Ashley. Ashley and I had a long day of work on the road, so we yelped the closest Thai food place. In comes Sawasdee. We had such high hopes. The service was amazing, and they could add duck to my pad see eew! What else could I ask for? My pad see eew was way over sauced, to the point where it tasted like I was just eating sauce. The noodles were too thin and slightly hard, like they'd been sitting out for a while. The duck was tasty, but there was way too little of it. The sauce was also way too sweet, and that's saying a lot, coming from a girl with a massive sweet tooth. Despite the wonderful service, the food is not good at all.

Literally the best and most authentic Thai place I have eaten east of California. Maybe since leaving Asia. Go here you will be pleased.

Saw this place on 15 restaurants to try in VA beach/Norfolk area and came with my bf and friends. Decor was cute, hostess was friendly and our waitress was very attentive. The problem we all had were some plates hadn't been cleaned well and my cup of water had a carrot piece in it... YUCK! But despite all that our food tasted good, nothing spectacular. When you ask for spicy though it actually comes out spicy compared to other thai spots. Will probably come back but not anytime soon.

It doesn't look like much from the outside, so when my friend raved, I was skeptical. Upon entering I was sold. The staff is friendly and the smells from the kitchen make your mouth water long before the food comes out. One of the things that makes them special is that they grow their own herbs in a garden on the premises. This special touch makes all the difference. You can taste the freshness and care that goes into their dishes. The pad Thai and steamed dumplings were both fantastic. I can't wait to go again, because there are about 8 other dishes that I also wanted. Those who are familiar with Thai know that it tends to be a bit pricey. Here, the portions offset the prices (which are affordable), especially at lunch.

Wow. The only thing that I am going to say about this restaurant that's bad is that it is in Virginia Beach and not in the fair city of Atlanta where I live. During a business trip we decided that we wanted to try something local, pulled out my yelp app and found this little gem. Pulled into the parking lot, there were a few cars outside and we noticed immediately that they had a sign indicating they did take out orders. Perfect. Walked inside the decor was really cute. It is a fairly small place with boots on either side tables and a bar in the middle. We were immediately warmly greeted and offered a seat at a table. Because we are going to order takeout we chose to stand at the bar, and place our orders at the bar. Service was fantastic and the person who took our order was very nice. I enjoyed a Kirin beer while standing at the bar and perusing the menu. Because they're looking for dinner the lunch portions were not available, no big deal for me. I ordered pad Thai chicken with extra Scallions. About 12 minutes later my order was ready to go and they threw in a delicious rice and chicken soup that I can't remember the name of... But I would order it again in a heart beat. I ordered my chicken pad Thai slightly spicy, came out perfectly. Wonderful green onions and beans sprouts not too much spice and the wonderful taste of tamarind. I would order this again and again and again. If you're in the area you should definitely check them out.

I'd been looking for a new place to grab lunch near work that ISN'T fast food (soooo much fast food in that area... ugh) and thought I'd give Sawasdee a shot after reading so many good reviews. After a couple of quick takeout visits, I've gotta say, I'm impressed. The food is fresh and well prepped. The basil fried rice (I get it with chicken) is super yummy. The portion is large enough to split into two days of lunches, which is great on a budget. They've thrown in some soup at no charge both times (a nice surprise). Both have been piping hot and full of flavor - think comfort food but without being heavy. I try to bring my lunch to work at possible, but it's worth "forgetting" as long as this place serves up good eats! Oh, and a huge plus - the people running Sawasdee are unbelievably pleasant and couldn't be more gracious. It's the kind of customer service that really makes you want to go back as much as the food does.

This place is amazing! The service was on point, the food was hot, fresh, and DELICIOUS! I got the chicken fresh rolls (a favorite of mine) & my husband got the potstickers. The Beef Pad Thai was amazing! My husband got the drunken noodles. He spent 3.5 years in Japan and traveled to Thailand very often. He said this place is dead on to what he had there. He is so excited to have found a place he can get legit thai food. We will be back soon!!

I'd like to start by saying Thai food is my least favorite Eastern cuisine, though this place made me rethink that... There are many thai places where I live, but with such high ratings, I had to check this place out. SO GLAD I DID! I ordered the wild siamese with beef, and it did not disappoint. I was worried that my post-marathon appetite would not be satisfied after reading other posts. How wrong I was. I am stuffed. This would be a beautiful place for a simple date, not too pricey, and a simply elegant ambiance. my only caution is to be careful with the Asian spices, as they are hot, hot, HOT!

  • Ross P.

It's was clean. Staff was polite, quick, and thoughtful. I was ordering to go, they poured a glass of water without me asking told me it'd take ten minutes (only took five) and asked if I needed anything while I waited. Tried a beer. Food was good! Very flavorful! Tried the curry puffs, awesome!

I'm fully born and raise 100%Thai. So I know what the food should taste like. I've been to so many state and I'll try out every Thai place I could find. Some of the place change the way Thai taste to more American style so y'all would like the food like more sweet, or not too spicy after you asked for Thai spice. Because y'all like to complain after y'all thinks that y'all know about all the Thai food!! So a lot of restaurant have bad reviews. "NOT ALL ASIAN (people/)FOOD IS THE SAME" we have different ingredient different culture don't assume that we're just like Chinese or Korean etc. For me this place have the most taste of Thai food style you could get. I tried pretty much all of the food on the menu. So all I can say is that if you too picky with your food don't order something you never try unless you with your good Thai friends they could help you out. Or ask about how it cook what's in it first. And before you ask for Thai spicy at this place you should be ready for it because they'll give you real Thai spice. Otherwise if you still have problem with the food here may be Thai food isn't for you.

I moved from Hawaii to here a few years ago and have been looking for Thai food that was as good as the Thai food in Hawaii and at last I found it! Not only were they very pleasant but my order was made quickly for carry out. The restaurant itself is very nice and I think the next time I will eat in with the family versus carry out. We ordered the chicken pad Thai. It was perfect. It even had the peanut crumbs on the side. I ordered 2 but 1 was definitely enough to feed my husband and self. The chicken satay was also just as delicious. The peanut sauce was amazing! They also gave us free egg rolls which was a plus! I can't wait to go back again and try their other dishes.

Very nice Thai food! I've only been at lunch, but have visited 5 times since first finding the place on Yelp a couple months ago. The Larb Gai is ah-maz-ing! Perfect combinations of tang, sweet and spice with a generous portion. I've also had their chicken lettuce wraps which were very good, and the perfect size for a lunch portion. Their wonton soup is full of veggies, and very delicate wontons-yummy! Today I tried a lunch entree for the first time-I had the Siamese chicken, perfect spice although the green beans were a little under done. A nice treat is the lunch dishes come with a house soup-which was a radish chicken soup--the broth was to die for and the chicken meatballs and radish were wonderful! The service is hit or miss, many times we've had dishes or orders forgotten, but they always get them out to us very quickly to make up for their mistake.

A boy from New York City, the ethnic food capital of the world, was flabbergasted to find the best Thai food he ever had in Norfolk, VA! Awesome food, great service, big portions, low price!!! Go, now! The Tom Kai soup with chicken is heaven.

This place is a hidden gem!!! The Pad Thai is perfect with just the right kick of spicy. If you want them to kick it up a notch...just ask!!!! Dinner portions are huge so you definitely have a lunch or two out of your leftovers. The Tom Yum Goong is some of the best I've ever had! The mushroom and water chestnut dumplings are seriously good! In short, I've never had a bad meal. Service is great. You can tell they are happy you came there to eat! Since I go a lot, they always remember my name and some of my favorites. It's a nice personal touch that lets you know they appreciate your business. Take out is just as good as eating in because my food is just as hot and fresh either way!!! (Even with the 15min drive home) It's never super busy which is great for guests but I think this place is way underrated because it's the best Thai food around!

Ate here last night and it was good enough that I'm going back in a day later to give them props. Food was great. Young couple (owners?) that were host/cook we're super sweet and she endured our questions around menu items and requests for recommendations. Ended up being a great meal and nice evening. Facility is clean - a bit dimly lit - and a bit off the beaten path. Not busy (7p on a Thursday) at all but it should be. Give these folks a chance. They are making some great food here!

As rabid connoisseurs of Southeast Asian cuisine, we have been somewhat distraught over the recent closing of our favorite Vietnamese restaurant near home. When the craving struck, we were left with having to drive all the way to Ghent for what we always considered average at best Thai or Vietnamese options. Then hallelujah, praise the lord! Tonight we Yelped and found Sawasdee four miles from home. When we mapped the location, our expectations were somewhat tempered. I mean, a great Thai restaurant on Virginia Beach Boulevard's decrepit warehouse/retail stretch? But when we pulled up and beheld the well-kept, modern exterior and pots of herbs and chilies bursting with color out front, we began to smile. Inside, we were greeted by a friendly Thai waitress (I think she's the daughter of the owner and chef), a clean and sleek modern Asian décor, and gentle Thai music. The menu blew us away with a huge selection of traditional Thai and other Asian specialties: Five curry dishes (my partner LOVES him some curry, so he was thrilled), incredible seafood selections, four delicious-looking duck entrees, stir fry, and of course, the staple noodle dishes. We started out with the fresh roll and satay appetizers, which were both superb. At that point, we knew we had struck pay dirt and could not make up our minds about dinner. We wanted to try it all! I finally settled for a bowl of Tom Yum soup and the Yum Woon Sen salad, rationalizing that if they could make these two Thai standards with extra pizazz, I would be back to try everything else. My partner went for the "Thai hot" green curry (he's not happy until the paramedics are called.) The soup was earthy, spicy, and lemongrassy with not one but three large shrimp in it. The glass noodles in the salad were perfectly prepared, and the "special sauce" they dressed it with was a complex mix of rice wine vinegar, fish sauce, and some other ingredients I couldn't name but which worked incredibly well. Now, curry doesn't care for me, but I had to taste Andrew's. It was heavenly: smooth and creamy going down, and four-alarm heat on the back side. Just the way he likes it. Our meal was perfect in every way. The service was excellent and attentive. And the prices more than reasonable. Entrees range from $8 to $18. Try finding those prices in Ghent. Sawasdee has no ABC permits yet, but does offer a good, basic beer and wine selection, including Asian beers. Sawasdee has been open for less than a year, and it's obvious they are still trying to find a following. When we arrived at 6 PM, we were the only guests. But within the hour, another six or so tables came in, including two young Thai girls who sat next to us. That's always a good sign at an ethnic restaurant. Do yourself a favor if you enjoy Thai food. Run, do not walk, and check out Sawasdee for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

Ok, let me be straight here. It's a strong 3.5 but not a 4, according to the following restaurant rubric that I'm starting to refine: Five stars = "I dream about this place", Four stars = "I can't wait to go back to this place" Three stars = "I'd definitely go back to this place if someone wanted ___ cuisine" Two stars = "I won't go back to this place for ___ cuisine" One star = "I wouldn't recommend this place to my enemy" The restaurant itself is located in an interesting quasi-industrial/residential area. Easy to get to, with decent lot parking and streets nearby. It was clean, nicely decorated and spacious. The staff (one lady) was genuinely attentive and friendly. The food was tasty (admittedly, not a huge Thai connoisseur here), fresh and came out at a decent pace. I've had better satay, and the peanut sauce seemed to have settled (but was still good). Veggies were fresh, and the tom yum was surprisingly good. Pad thai was money, but the rice was a bit underdone (I'm calling it that, rather than old). Portion sizes were ample. Bathrooms were also clean, too. Perhaps the ambiance was lacking due to the fact that I was only one of three tables there, and maybe I'm being a little harsh with the review. But I can/will stand by it. I don't think you'll be disappointed in the food if you go, but holding ALL restaurants to the same standard I find it difficult to put up there with the other 4/5-star ratings I've got out there. Attentive service brought it up from a 3, but is not quite 4-star material the way I look at things. And that's the way the cookie crumbles...

Yummy, veg-friendly Thai food with an interesting menu and friendly staff. Most entrees can be made veg or vegan by subbing tofu and the lunch specials are the right portion and price. I enjoyed the chicken cashew stir-fry (subbing tofu for chicken and adding broccoli) with jasmine rice and a small salad with ginger dressing. Location is off the main strip of Military Circle shops, but not far.

Duck! I miss the little family Thai restaurant that we had in our home town. I've been looking for a place that served duck as well as they had and I think I've found it! I had the roasted duck curry, made hot. I love a good spicy food that is also flavorful. This was perfect and the portion was huge! So much duck and veggies! My wife got the pad Thai noodles with shrimp. She thought they were a little bit on the sweet side, but I thought they were perfect. The kids shared the tropical fried rice that came with chicken and shrimp. They loved it and fought over every last cashew in the dish. Our 1 year old also went to town on the remaining bites of the dish and couldn't get enough of it. The kids split the fried banana and ice cream for dessert and again fought over every last bite. My wife and I split the Thai custard which was pretty epic as well. Definitely will have to stop by again if we're ever in this area.

We went here on a whim, and we were so surprised. We started with dumplings, which tasted fairly fresh. For dinner, I had green curry with chicken and veggies. The green curry was spot on although the chicken wasn't terribly exciting. My husband got the crispy duck which was awesome. There were other things on the menu that we want to come back and try. We got the custard for desert and it was a nice shareable dessert, although might be too sweet for some.

I'm a recent Va transplant from Bk NYC, home of one of my favorite Thai hotspots, Lotus Thai. I never ever thought I would find anything comparable to my fav spot but after visiting Sawasdee for lunch take out, all I can say is Whoa!! I ordered chicken pad see ew, broccoli only (their menu says they usually add broccoli carrots and baby corn), and while the noodles are a bit different than typical pad see ew noodles, they were cooked to perfection! The sauce...right on! The portion size was HUGE for eight dollars after tax. My only complaint could be that the chicken was not seasoned and slightly dry, otherwise I am impressed! It should also be noted that the staff was beyond amazingly friendly, the restaurant itself had a very nice and not cheesy ambiance and the restrooms were spic and span. Will definitely be making this my go to spot! Thanks Sawasdee!!

This is the best Thai food I have had in a long time. I had an overnight in Norfolk due to an early flight out of ORF and we stumbled upon this restaurant. The restaurant was clean and nice. The people are amazing. so friendly and nice. We were there with my young kids and they could not be more accommodating. The food was excellent. Fresh, great selection and reasonably priced. We liked it so much that we went there on the way back from our trip out of town too. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Authentic Thai I recommend the tom yum soup with shrimp and finish it off with either some classic pa nang curry or beef drunken noodles and don't forget get the hot jasmine tea . It is some damn good Thai food for the price.

My wife and I really wanted to like this place, but it just wasn't what others have wrote it to be. The service was very good, that is one highlight of the experience. We had the steamed vegetable pot stickers as an appetizer and there just wasn't much flavor to them to be honest. They weren't bad, they just didn't have a lot of taste. I also had the Larb Gai, once again, nothing bad, just ok. For our entrees we both had curries of different varieties. I had the panang curry and my wife had the mas sa man curry. There wasn't much chicken in the panang curry, and the beans were undercooked I would say. Decent, but nothing great. All in all, I will not be going back to Sawasdee, Tida Thai is a much better option.

This is really close to my house and I thought I'd give it a try for dinner. Ordered the orange chicken and it was really good! The restaurant was clean and nice looking. The wait staff were really nice and made sure my kids and I were happy with out Thai tea while we waited for dinner. They even gave us free miso soup to try. Even though this place might look sketchy on the outside because of the area, definitely come in and try it. You won't be disappointed, I promise.

Sawasdee is absolutely beautiful in so many ways. The decor is sharp and sparkling clean. Close your eyes and the music will bring you to the most beautiful thai gardens you can imagine. Our server, Kook, was delightful. Her knowledge of the menu was impressive and her recommendations were spot on. We started with a Singha (beer) a house chardonnay and the appetizer special of jasmine rice cakes with crab in them. The cakes were coated in panko and lightly fried served with a delicious red pepper sauce. He had the ginger lovers beef and I had the Panang (yellow) curry with shrimp. The vegetables in both of our dishes had just the right crunch on them. I'm not a ginger lover but he loved his meal. My curry had just the right amount of heat with the sweetness of the coconut milk toss in some of that white rice, heaven. The presentation of these plates were works of art, see pics. We finished with a shared thai custard. This dessert caught me off guard, it was hot. Oven hot not spicy hot. Spoon up some of that whipped cream onto it and have a party on your palate. All this for $50.56 (incl. tax) Ya can't go wrong with that!

This place is the best thai I've had in Virginia....and I'm asian (does that count for something? Lol). I only mention that because I eat at a lot of asian restaurants. The presentation of the food is awesome. Kudos to the chef. Large portions. I had the duck (which I tend to order at every new asian restaurant) and 5 STARS. Bravo. It was covered in a delicious sauce but they did the right thing, and brought it out immediately after saucing so the duck was still hot and CRISPY (not soggy and squishy). My friend had some kind of steak dish and it was cooked perfectly. So darn good and cheap in relation to the portion size, quality of food and excellent service. Not the most beautiful building but if you're a foody, you'll appreciate this place.

Just wanted to say that this owner wrote me a scathing, and frankly rude, note on our last review (every ounce of our last review was true- from the terrible food to the ants everywhere). If I had been tempted to give your restaurant another shot, I certainly would not be now. Really not good business practice, or a way to win back clients. So much for the good service I had when I was there. Sorry :(

Went here with my husband with a LivingSocial deal. We are new to the area from the Seattle area, and have been looking for a great thai place. The inside of the restaurant was empty when we arrived, but then again we showed up at 4:30. By the time we left there were at least four other tables there. We started with the salad/fresh rolls, which were great. Completely fresh and artfully presented. Prior to that our waiter (who was great and made sure our tea never ran out) gave us a free appetizer, the daikon soup of the day, which acted as a great palette cleanser. Now onto the main dish. We always order the same dishes at thai restaurants: phad thai an red curry with chicken. I love spice, so I ordered the curry four stars. The spiciness of the dish was perfect. The phad thai (a generous portion, might I add) was equally superb. After the first bites, we knew we would come back. Even though they gave us a random coupon for 15% off our next order, we would have come back anyways. Visit this place, and be impressed by the food!

Stumbled into this place and am surprised I had not heard about it before. Very pleasantly surprised. There were lots of nice fresh vegetables in the sweet and sour chicken, unlike some places where you get too much filler like canned baby corn and bamboo shoots. The chicken was fresh, not fried or breaded. The sauce was perfect to my taste, not overly sweet. Any dish you can substitute tofu. We all enjoyed our food and the atmosphere. Pretty decor, everything looks new and clean. Light colors, big windows, a banquet room in back with a large table for 14. Service was attentive. Huge portions and very good quality. Mixed beverages beer and wine available. I will be back.

Exceptional. Sparkling clean. This restaurant is a total gem! We ordered the papaya salad (bright, citrus, chili spiced,) the absolutely delicious drunken noodles (a must order,) and a special: masaman lamb. The lamb was garnished with house-roasted cashews and had chunks of yam, along with the traditional potatoes, curry peanut sauce, and carrots. The Thai chicken lettuce wraps to start were tasty, although not innovative. The service was hospitable and excellent, the decor clean, with fresh flowers at every table. The owners clearly take pride in their place. Good price for fresh, delicious food. And if you're on the way in and out of town from the airport nearby, this is a great place to relax and refill. In all, I can't believe Norfolk has this gem, you locals are so lucky!

I always get take out here and the food quality is awesome. I have been to different Thai restaurants and service and the deliciousness is by far the best. Yes, I haven't dined in yet but the woman who always takes and brings my order out will continuously make you feel welcome. Also, their food comes with complimentary side dishes as well; so that's a plus :D it's a fairly new place and the location is right on the blvd. y'all need to come along and try this place!!

I ordered take out. Chicken pad thai and Thai dumplings. Both were very good. I got the lunch portion which is enough for 2 people or in my case, 2 meals. It's hard to find good thai food in this area and this place does a great job. I will definitely be back soon!

I LOVE this place. It hides in plain sight on a strip of VB Blvd not known for restaurants at all. The decor is definitely Asian but without being overpowering, very nice tables and booths, clean restrooms etc. The food is GREAT! Fresh, not overpoweringly hot (unless you ask for it-be careful!) and presented very nicely as well. My daughter LOVES the Fried Tofu, I love the Tom Kha. The Green Curry is also great. Everything we've had is quite good. I would like to see a small kid's menu available, younger and pickier kids won't find a lot here, but I really can't fault them for not catering to kids, as they're very clear about being an authentic Thai place. LOVE IT. Go there for lunch often as well. Casual wear is fine, even though the ambience is quite classy :)

This review is based strictly off the food. With that said, let me start with the good. The curry puffs (1.5 stars) were very tasty with just the right amount of spice, after all the food I've been disappointed by here in virginia, I was pleasantly surprised. The basil fried rice (1/2 star), while overly spicy, the texture of the rice reminded me of what I would get at a NY chinese restaurant, so only for the trip down memory lane was this rice good. Now the bad, and I really mean bad. The roasted duck red curry. Not only did it lack in flavor, but it lacked in duck as well. You can only order one size which is large. Large means you get a container full of red curry liquid, vegetables, pineapple and a few scraps of roasted duck. What a waste of 17 dollars. Oh and this comes with one small bowl of rice that feeds maybe one. But I digress, moving on to the green curry with chicken. Smh this was the worst green curry I've ever had, and I travel a lot so that is saying something. I don't even know how to describe the taste but ewww seems to suffice. This also had a very minuscule amount of the paper-thin sliced chicken so this too was a waste of money. To say I was disappointed is an understatement, especially after reading the reviews on yelp. I really wanted to like this place, I was hoping that this would be my restaurant until I can make it back to NY. It will not be. Although I loved the curry puffs and the rice, texture, I won't be heading back. This place is too far to travel for curry puffs alone and maybe rice.

This place does not warrant the good reviews. It is nice inside, and the food is good. But not the best thai I have had by far. And way over-priced. And the restaurant was deserted when I was there.

After my first visit, I know I will come back. The atmosphere and customer service were good. The food was delivered fast and warm, even with others coming and going with take out orders. The drunken noodles were very tasty as were the Thai egg rolls. They have good hot sauces brought on demand. I will definitely come again.

Girlfriend and I had planned to try the new Bangladeshi restaurant around the corner from our house Monday night after work, but we were thwarted: they close at 6! As alternative, she suggested Thai food. I'd driven past Sawasdee last weekend and decided to bring us there. On a wet Monday night, the place... was empty. We got there about 8:30 and were the only people there. That did make for a nice, intimate date for us, but I hope the place does better business sometimes. The interior's beautiful - they've put a lot of effort into the decor - our waitress was attentive and nice, and the food was excellent. They've got a decent menu, not too long, but organized a little differently than other Thai restaurants I've been to. There's the expected sections, but there's also a section devoted to duck. And they had 5 or 6 curry options instead of just the usual 3 or 4. But there's duck. Duck! I totally got the duck. After orders of a wonton soup (Katie's idea, I'd normally have gotten the tom yum or tom kha) and complementary salads (with a very nice ginger dressing), our entrees came. Katie had ordered woon sen, which was a noodle dish. It was described on the menu as having "mixed vegetables", which turned out to include carrots and baby corn (in addition to some other things, including zucchini). She eschews both those vegetables, but after setting them aside she said she enjoyed the rest of the meal. And she had enough for leftovers that were no longer in the fridge after Tuesday. Personally, I thought the bit I tried wasn't all that flavorful, but then my Thai noodle dish of choice is drunken noodles. Anyway, who cares about noodles? There's a whole duck section on the menu! Not a big section, mind you, but enough that I had to choose between ginger duck and basil duck. I went with the basil duck. It was chunks of lightly breaded & fried quackbird stir-fried with vegetables, big chunks of Thai basil, and chili paste. I'd probably ask for it spicier next time (if I can convince myself again not to get the green curry... I don't remember if there was duck curry), but it was delicious nonetheless! I loved it. And I really hope they stick around.

Today was the second time I have visited Sawasdee Thai Cuisine with my wife and, again, I was pleased. We ordered Basil Fried Rice with pork and Pad Thai. Delicious! The rice had just enough spice to it to keep your attention and the Pad Thai would satisfy even Sheldon Cooper. My wife and I shared each plate and there were still left overs on the serving platters. An EXCELLENT buy for $17 total. I'm not an expert in Thai food, but if this is what all thai food is supposed to taste like, I have found a new addiction.

The appetizers (thai egg roll, thai fresh roll, chicken satay) were delicious. The ingredients were fresh & very satisfying. I dined on a meal of Mas Sa Mun curry, my son had Green curry, and my daughter had Basil duck. Although my son expected the curry to be thicker, the flavor more than made up for the consistency. The jasmine rice was delightfully fluffy. The jasmine tea was like drinking flower petals. The thai iced tea was very good & reminded me of a liquid orange-cicle.The fried cheese cake was "state fair" & gourmet at the same time, so delicious. A visit here for a meal will truly be a rewarding experience. The service was some of the best I have ever had in Tidewater!

Wow! This is the best Thai food I have ever eaten. The drunken noodle is very authentic! Their food is full of flavor. If you are in the area you definitely want to take time to eat here! The chicken jasmine rice was out of this world as well!

After having such a bad experience at another local restaurant, Wasabi Steak House and Sushi (see my yelp review), me and the wife left hungry so we again look up Yelp for a Thai restaurant to fill our belly. We found Sawasdee with a solid 4.5 stars. We ordered Tom Yum shrimp. It was just ok. We also ordered crispy fish with chili pepper sauce. The fish is the size of a baby sun fish. Barely enough for a few bites. The sauce tasted like a typical generic Chinese brown sauce. The only thing that save this place from a 1 star rating is the friendly service. Our server was friendly and attentive. Too bad the food sucks.

As I sit here eating Pad Thai leftovers, I remember how great it was last night. It's still pretty good today. I started with the Bikini Prawns. They came out nice and hot. It was crispy, too so you know that they had dipped it in the fryer oil after you ordered it and not 5 hours before. I then had the chicken Pad Thai. One word came to mind when it came out: FRESH. The bean sprouts were cooked just right to retain their crunchiness and the scallions were so green they really popped on what out have been an otherwise brown plate (that's what happens when you cook with brown sauce so no complaints there). The portions are good. I don't eat too much so the one plate was enough for 3 meals for me. I ended with the sticky rice and mango. Pretty simple dish, but you can mess up the rice. Once again, they cooked it just right. Not too smushy. I've also had the masaman curry and the drunken noodles here and both were just as good. My roommate had the fried rice one night and I was surprised that they put peanut butter in it (or it tasted like there was peanut butter). I would caution anyone with a nut allergy to be careful and check for sure. This will be a definitely stop whenever I crave Thai food.

We had been waiting patiently for a Thai place to come to us locally, and we finally have one. Extra points for being really, really great food too. I have ordered takeout a few times from them, which came with speedy service and a smile. Then we sat down for a meal or two, and it was great food and great service. They really seem like they want to impress, and they certainly do! I highly recommend this place to anyone looking at Thai food.

  • Randy S.

I rated Sawasdee a 5-star because of the value for the price. Tonight I had the Eggplant Stir-fry with chicken. It was cooked just right. The eggplant was soft, but not mushy, cut into wedges, not slices. It had green and red peppers, onions, mushrooms, carrots, scallions in a soy bean sauce. I started the meal with the Tom Yum soup with shrimp, and finished the meal with the very tasty and nicely plated Thai Custard, which comes hot, by the way. The meal was accompanied by two adult beverages and the price before tip was below $30. Excellent. I don't get the impression that their food is really spicy, so if you have been afraid to try Thai because you don't like hot food, give Sawasdee a try. It has a nice atmosphere inside, and it is very close to the Military Circle, JANAF shopping district.

I loved this place. My family is pretty picky but each one of them was very happy about their meal. Ma sa man curry was spicy and delicious and my brother loved the ginger duck. Service was attentive and nice bc there was only one other table lol. I hope they stick around! Give them your money so they stay open, it's so worth it!

I came across this place via Groupon (currently a deal for $20 worth of food for $10). First, I'll say this place is not in the prettiest of areas but as someone who has moved to the area within the last two years, I felt pretty safe. This restaurant has only been open for a couple of months. There were no other customers there when my friend and I arrived for dinner one weeknight. The inside is tastefully decorated with seating available at the bar, square tables w/ chairs or in booths. There's a flat screen tv on one of the walls but the volume was low. They had an old Norah Jones CD playing quietly in the background while we were there. The bathrooms are super clean. The waitstaff were very courteous and helpful, providing additional clarification of menu items when asked. We ordered the Sampler Platter which includes 2 curry puffs,2 skewer chicken satay, 2 egg rolls,3 pot stickers, 2 chicken fingers. I wasn't too thrilled by the chicken fingers but it's an acceptable item if you're dining with folks who aren't used to Thai food. We substituted thai dumplings for the curry puffs since they were out that night. My friend ordered the Mas Sa Mun Curry (The most popular Thai curry spices with coconut milk, onions, potatoes, carrots, peanuts) which is a nice mild curry for those who aren't too keen on things with a kick. However, there was a note in the menu indicating customers can specify the level of heat they want in their curry. I can't remember what I ordered but I'll post the picture above. We finished our dinner with the Thai Custard for dessert. I wasn't sure what to expect with the custard since I'd had the same dish at a different restaurant the week before. Totally different but still enjoyable. This one was very similar to flan. All of our food was delicious and the service was great, but that's probably because we were the only customers. :) I ordered takeout on my 2nd visit (got the Mas Sa Mun Curry) and received great service then as well. Staff are extremely gracious and asked for feedback on both my visits. If you're in the area of Military Circle, please give this place a try. I'd hate to see them close their doors before the public has a chance to discover them. And if you're reading this during the month of November check out GROUPON for a deal.

Thai food is over-rated. The only reason I am giving it 3 stars is because I am not a big fan of thai food. I had platter sampler ($11), duck curry ($16) and whole fish fry ($18). The prices are also little steep for my liking. I dont mind paying more, but the food just wasn't as good as i had hoped.

Great clean, well decorated restaurant. We went in on a Monday night and it was almost completely empty. Service was great. A complimentary cup of jasmine rice soup comes out when you order. This is one of those restaurants located in an area that you would think couldn't possibly hide a real gem. Nevertheless, there it is. My teenage daughter and I went there based on the reviews in Yelp. We live in West Ghent and generally look for good food close to home or downtown, but nothing seemed particularly inspiring. I have not had really good thai food since living in Seattle a decade ago. I am happy to report that Sawasdee would rank right up there with any Asian restaurant in the Northwest. The restaurant is lovely and understated inside. The servers were friendly and attentive and seemed genuinely interested in what we thought of the food. We had the lettuce chicken wraps to start. The ground chicken was delicious, the lettuce crisp and plentiful, and the sauce served on the side was fantastic. My only complaint was that there was not enough chicken for all of the lettuce leaves--we would have happily eaten more. We tried the Tom Kah soup and liked it very much. We have a great recipe for this soup at home and so are pretty picky about restaurant versions. Since we wanted leftovers, we ordered more than we could eat. We had the Masseman curry, phad thai, and something called (I think) drunken goat noodles, or something like that. That one was delicious with long, flat noodles, vegetables and a smooth brown sauce that held it all together. I can't wait to go back and take the rest of my family.

I loved it! Decent price for Thai tea. Food came quickly and was delicious. It had the spice I asked for and the service was great too. I would definitely come back here

First time here because of the reviews on yelp. This place was good but not great. When you are an Asia type restaurant the one thing you have to get right is your rice. The rice here was slightly crunchy. The Maine dish of Stir Fry Beef had a strong salty taste to it. I think it was the sauce.

There's a lot of bad thai around Hampton Roads, this is NOT one of those places. Upon entering I told my husband how clean and fresh smelling the restaurant was. Our meal was great and the service was friendly. Stop by if you're in the mood for thai- try their green curry!

Really good food, I just wish it were closer to my house. On second thought, maybe it's better that it isn't, or I'd eat there too often. On my recent visit we had the spring rolls (not the fried ones) with shrimp, a mixed seafood green curry and pad thai. Vegetables all were fresh (especially in the spring rolls where the basil seemed just picked.) I'm looking forward to going back and trying some other dishes soon!

Very happy with my lunch--pad thai and beef salad. Don't be fooled by the exterior--this is a gem! Definitely will be going back!

We were out and about 2 days ago and noticed Sawasdee for the first time. I came home and read the reviews and knew that I had to try Sawasdee soon. Well, we just returned home from dinner and I had to write immediately. I had the special which was Angel wings, chicken wings which have been de-boned and stuffed with a combination of Thai spices, shrimp, calamari and the chicken meat, lightly breaded and deep fried until a perfect golden color. The Thai flavor jumps in your mouth and makes you want to devour every last bite. It was also served with 4 beautifully spiced shrimp and garlic fried rice; and a sauce of massaman curry. The presentation was absolutely gorgeous. My husband had the Wild Siamese which is a choice of beef, pork or chicken stir-fried with, string beans, basil leaves, bamboo shoots, bell peppers, onions, and rhizome in red chili paste. He asked to have it stepped up to a 4 in hot which was a bit too hot for me but the flavor was awesome. We have both spent time in Thailand and I even learned to cook several of the more common dishes because we love Thai food so much. This restaurant is one of my all time favorite Thai restaurants. We plan on returning frequently. Read the reviews and go see for yourself, i'm sure you will be giving it 5 stars as well! Sawasdee!

I have eaten at any thai restaurants including some in NYC. This restaurant is a great find. Something for everyone. Not spicy if you don't want it. It's beautiful and clean. Well decorated. This is a must go! Great service and prices.

We drove by this place for a month before we saw it. Even when we saw the restaurant we thought it was an odd location for it to be in. My boyfriend and I love trying new places so we went for dinner the next evening. Although we were one of two tables for most of the evening, we found the food well presented on the plates and delicious! What a surprise for two people who eat out a lot. We ordered the lettuce wraps as an appetizer. It was such a great flavor and my favorite part was the crunchy noodles that gave it that much more texture to each bite. We liked the wraps so much we ordered one to go. I ordered the Seafood Green Curry. There's not much variation with that spicy dish but the most noticeable part was they don't skimp on the seafood. Large shrimps, scallops, mussels all the way! Boyfriend ordered Chicken with Cashews. A bit on the sweeter side because they cook it with pineapples but I guess that's what makes it Thai. I liked the sauce better than most Chinese take out places. Service was excellent! I felt they would have the same attentiveness and friendliness with a packed restaurant. Great 1st experience!
