My favorite to go place - can't go wrong with the Pad Thai or drunken noodles or their delicious Panang curry!

I didn't even know that this place existed until a couple of weeks ago when one of my mom's friends suggested it. I came here in a group of 8 people (including myself) and the staff was very friendly and accommodating; half the party arrived at 2:55 and they still gave us all the lunch prices even though they were over at 3, I was very impressed because other establishments may have given us some grief about that. Throughout our meal, our drinks were refilled, and the waitress was attentive to everybody's needs at the table. She was very personable and she even kept the table smiling and laughing with all her jokes. As for the food, everything was on point. I got the angel wings stuffed with crab meat for an appetizer and Thai fried rice with beef with a side of sweet and sour sauce. Delicious and big portions for just the lunch size. Overall, Rama Garden Thai is one of the better restaurants that I've been too. I definately reccommend.

Like their food, but this place is overpriced and is very MEH. We went in there at 7:00 PM on a Tuesday and were the only people in the entire place. The food was very average Thai. I asked for the price of a beer (Blue Moon) to see if I wanted to order it, my server brought me the beer and then told me it was $7.50. Wha? If you go here, please check the prices of their beverages before you order. If I go back, it'll have to be for lunch when things aren't so expensive. No need to charge so much - maybe that's why no one is there....

Went here over lunch to meet some colleagues. The waiter asked me if I wanted to order since one of my party was running extremely late. I went ahead and ordered. When my party finally got all seated and the other two ordered, their food came out while I sat and watched them eat for 15 minutes before I got frustrated and left. They still charged my party for my food that I never received!! The waiter did nothing but argue with me when I asked him where my food was, making excuses. I understand that every wait staff is not perfect, but what is uncalled for is crappy service then argue with customer about it. NEXT!

Thai cuisine can simply be defined as the food combination of salt, sweet, sour, bitter, and hot. This makes the cuisine already unique and distinct compared to other cuisines. I thought Rama Garden was lacking the most important component and essence of Thai cuisine, though the flavor was there but the complexity of the dish is missing. I rolled in Wednesday night by myself. It was quiet so I was served and directly seated. The woman who assisted me was very polite, warm, and welcoming. Thought she was adorable. As for my visit, I ordered the Thai dumplings to start with and Pork pad thai for my entrée. The food presentation was visually stunning. It was tasty and well seasoned unfortunately I find it very one dimensional. I'm quite a bit disappointed that the meal seems so perfect yet the texture is missing. On the brighter side, the portion was generous though. Such a waste of food if you can't eat them all. Overall, the entire restaurant looks amazing.

Came in to find the restaraunt empty, but the food was good. Had the pad Thai and the portions we're large for the price. The banana fried ice cream was really good! Food came out very quick, but I was the only one there.

I like their pad thai but did not like masman curry.. all I can taste from curry was only coconut milk.. The service is just okay.

Had to update considering it's been a while and they've stepped up. Right now it's my favorite Thai in Norfolk outpacing Bangkok Garden's new restaurant. I've been sticking with the Chicken String Bean - and always have a try of the Tofu Pad Thai. Both are solid choices. Their Tom Kha lemongrass soup is also very delicious!

I came to Rama Garden with friends for a birthday dinner. We came at about 4pm on a Saturday night and the place was still pretty empty. Our server was new and was a little clumsy, but we've all been in his shoes so we accepted his apologies and went on with our early dinner. It seemed like we waited a little while for our food because we waited for our entire party to come before ordering anything. I ordered the spring rolls, which were good but weren't any different from spring rolls I've had at other Thai places. For my entree, I ordered the chicken pad Thai. The portion was large. However, I was not impressed with the taste. It was a little too tangy for me, with a strong lime juice aftertaste. I didn't expect that from a pad Thai dish. Maybe I should've ordered something different...I wasn't overall impressed with this place and probably wouldn't come back on my own.

Favorite Tom Yum soup in HRVA, hands down. As far as the rest of the menu, it is very typical, noting to write home about. But not bad for a lunch if you are ok with spending more than $10.

I LOVE this place! My food was great, and I know my Thai food :-) I tried the Tom Kha for the first time and it did not disappoint. I've had the Drunken Noodles, Pad Woo Sen, Pad prik. It's all delicious! My server was awesome as well. Good food and good service equals future business.

  • Laura N.

I love their drunken noodles!!!!! The complexity of the dish, the spiciness, the flavor, and the amount (which is always generous)! I normally pick up my food after class. I'm such a regular, that the friendly staff will ask if my class ran late :-). The times I do dine in, their service is just as great! I haven't been to Bangkok Garden, but I couldn't imagine another resturaunt better than Rama Garden!!

Tasty Thai food in the heart of downtown. Prices are a tad high but the service is great. I liked the food a lot.

My friend and I went to grab dinner at this venue shortly after attending an event at Chrystler Hall. The interior is very welcoming. The staff were all smiles. The food was reasonably priced, averaging $10.95-$16.96 or so per dish. The service time was reasonable. I had the sweet & sour chicken dish with Thai Dumplings. They were all delicious. My friend had the Spicy Mango dish with Thai Tea and it was delicious! I am definitely a fan and will be going back next time I am in the area. I actually, specifically went here after reading over some YELP reviews. Great job, Yelpers for making this an easy decision!

I have been coming to this restaurant for over than 3 years. All good, but the last couple of times they change either the cook or something else. When I spoke with the waiter which she have been working there for a long time, I told her there is a water in the pad Thai she said "so ?!!!" Like she doesn't care. I stopped going because of her. So sad. Wish Joe still there.

We've gotten carryout from here 3x now, and each time the food has been consistently tasty. Pad Thai, Panaang Curry, Tom Yum soup, and the mango with sticky rice are a few of our favorites. I've had better in other cities, but for this area, this is as good as it gets!

I feel a little guilty giving this place only 3 stars based on the wonderful experiences that other reviewers have had. The bottom line, though, is that I just thought it was average. I may be a bit biased because when I lived in DC I was walking distance to two exceptional Thai restaurants. I ordered the Sriracha Beef, while my friend had the Red Curry with Chicken. We both thought the food was good, but lacked the heat that we were expecting. I neglected to order my usual- the Pad See Eaw- because I was in the mood for spicy. That being sad, it certainly wasn't bad- I ate all of it. The server was friendly, but forgot my beer (that's important!). I also didn't really think the "happy hour" special for beer was worthy of its label. $3.50 for a Coors Light, meh. A little on the small side, but has a nice ambiance and is in a wonderful location just a block away from the mall and Norva. I had planned to go to another restaurant on that block, but was closed on Mondays. Bottom line- it didn't leave a bad taste in my mouth, but also didn't leave me wanting to come back to try more.

Had the basics, Tom Yum Goong and Larb Gai. Tom Yum Goong was lacking in many ways, broth was weak, missing the heat level coupled with galangal and lemon grass, there was no visible sign of any of these, only cilantro, mushrooms and several ample shrimp which was a plus. The Larb Gai (chicken) was good but a bit more of the nutty ground roasted rice would have been a plus, I had to kick up both dishes with some red crush pepper. The server was super nice, she spoke thai. Ambience is good, a clean and warm inviting space. Plenty of booths and tables. The cost for my meal along with a beer was $20 before tip.

Our waitress was so excited to seat us that she took about 10 minutes to make conversation with us. Very nice, but we were starving, so we rushed her a little bit to take our order. I ordered pad see eew with pork, and our food came very, very quickly. Our chatty little waitress kept coming back to chat with us while we were eating too! My noodles were very tasty, with just enough sweetness. Overall, a pleasant experience!

One of my favorite thai restaurants! It's surprisingly never busy but I don't mind since the service is quick and friendly. It doesn't matter what you get, everything is good. I can tolerate spicy food so I was impressed when their dishes got my nose running and water glass empty. The spicy levels rank from 1 to 5, 5 being most spicy. So you can definitely spice it to your liking. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys spicy food.

Rama Garden it is one of my favorite places for when I'm craving Thai food. I've done more takeout from there lately than dining in, but the food is still equally delicious. I love the way they make their Pad Thai. I like mine sweeter & that's how theirs is. I'm not a fan of the super garlicky kind that I've received at other places. I also love their Panang Curry. It's so flavorful, warm, & comforting! We recently ordered at the office & everyone's lunch looked & smelled terrific. I heard a few complaints of their takeout being spicier than when they had ordered it when they dined in, so I suggest making them aware of the level of spice you can handle when you call. Mine was still perfect!

  • Nikki B.

Great atmosphere and the food is delicious! Husband ordered the duck which was the moist and had just the right amount of spice. I had the tom yum chicken soup which was tasty! The Thai fried rice could've been spicier but it was okay. The waitress was very friendly and over the experience was enjoyable. I'm sure I will be back for the duck.

Rama Garden is just one of those Thai places that is so darn consistent in their offerings. Every meal is served with a side salad that comes with a delicious peanut dressing. For me, their panag curry is about as good as it gets. Typically when I order Panag, it comes out kinda watery, but here, it's a sauce with a little bit of heft. Served ontop of a pile of steamed broccoli and a scoop of rice, it's never disappointed. You'll also see all the normal players here, Pad Pak, Pad Thai, etc... All are served with very generous serving sizes. The reduction from five to four stars is due to service. They've lately hired on some new staff and they're just not as on top of things as I'd like (read: they routinely forget my drink order / don't keep my glass filled, which is important when it's super five star spicy!). All in all, I don't think you can go wrong if you're looking for a little Thai downtown.

Solid 3.5 Thai food in Norfolk, but nothing to write home about. Noodles were good, curries were bland. Tom Kha and dumplings were so-so. Satay was juicy but peanut sauce tasted very canned. Recommend: Beef siam, beef drunken noodles, pork and eggplant (spicy). Do not recommend: Green curry, wonton soup, chicken and string beans. The service was nice, but because we ordered a large meal ($200) I had to pay over the phone.

I am not sure why I had never been here before today, but it's going on my Norfolk lunch circuit from now on, I think it may get Tuesdays. I had a super delicious veggie pad thai with a little bit of spice. The lunch portion was ridiculously large and I ended up taking half of it home. The veggies were cooked perfectly, with still a bit of crunch and there were plenty of them in the dish. The service was pretty good, especially given how busy it got.

Haven't been to this particular Thai joint before and I'm glad I did. It was a bit hard to find because I literally went up and down Granby but I eventually used my gps and felt foolish not being able to see it. The entrance isn't too flashy so it may be a little difficult to notice. I came in during lunch time and I was the one of two customers at the time. It's possible that they are busier in the evening because they have break hours between lunch and dinner. But anyway, the ambiance is really based on their native theme and the warm colors on the wall that make a simple mural was really welcoming. Quick to order; I got Thai tea and pad Thai with chicken and shrimp. They gave me a house salad with some ginger dressing that was really good. Not long after, I received the pad Thai freshly made. Needless to say, it was really delicious and it had a sweet taste to it that I really enjoyed. The portion size just for this lunch dish was fairly huge and filling which is really good because usually lunch portions aren't super filling for me. I will have to take a friend here one time. I like how it's quiet and has soothing orchestra music in the background.

Good food- great atmosphere- great service---- visit this place often- lots of options for those who are nervous about trying something new! They even have drink specials after work - what drinks and good food???? I'm there

The food here is delish! I had the Angel wings, Tom yum soup with chicken, shrimp and seafood pad Thai,Thai iced tea and drunken noodles with chicken(to go). My son had the chicken pad Thai. I loved everything I ordered (tried my drunken noodles at home). All was delish. I think my son had a problem with the sweetness of his pad Thai(1st time trying them). He did enjoy the Angel wings tho and his Thai iced tea. We loved the atmosphere and the wait staff were great. Food came out fast and I got the #2 spiciness, it was just right. The drunken noodles are very spicy but great. I will definitely be back. Great date night place.

We relied on Yelp for some good Thai food while we were in the area. We ordered the papaya salad, vegetable rolls, pad thai, tom yum, shrimp fried rice, and panang curry. The better tasting dishes were the pad thai and the panang curry. The papaya salad, tom yum, and fried rice were just okay. The fresh vegetable rolls were sad. The portions are large, so this ended up being way too much food (something we're not use to in U.S. Thai restaurants). We ordered non-alcoholic thai drinks. Between the two, the coconut drink was delicious. The service was good. Nothing here tasted authentically Thai, and we will not be returning.

Rama Garden is a place me and my coworkers frequent when we stay in downtown Norfolk. The waitresses are really nice, and the food comes out fairly quickly. It's never really busy. The drunken noodle is really spicy. My favs are the ginger dish with chicken and the spring rolls. My coworkers all have our own favorite dishes.

This is my favorite Thai restaurant in the Norfolk area. My husband and I met up with a friend for dinner here when we first moved to town, and it has become our go-to for Thai food. We've tried others, and they just haven't measured up to the service and the food at Rama Garden. My husband love the drunken noodles - he gets them EVERY time. I have a few favorites - the pad thai is good, as is the panang curry. Their Thai iced coffee is well-balanced, not too sweet, but just sweet enough. The real draw for this place is the service. Every server I have had is nice, and nearly all of them are funny and witty. It is rare to find servers that actually seem like real people these days, since most times servers are not willing to put themselves out there for fear that they won't get their standard tip. To those people, I say it's worth the risk with friendly tables, which my husband and I are nearly all the time. The decor is unique, and feels well thought-out and put together, compared to some other local Thai restaurants that are not cohesive. The seating layout is good to ensure privacy to each table, which is also a gripe I often have with Thai restaurants. Overall, this is a great place for an affordable and DELICIOUS Thai food dinner. Don't forget the iced coffee! :)

Finally found a Thai restaurant that has the same flavors that Simply Thai used to have. The owners moved away and have been on a mission to find another Thai place that would satisfy my red curry vegetarian craving. YEAH... Thank you Rama Garden for existing. The staff was friendly. The ginger dressing for the salad was very flavorful, but very tangy, suggest getting it on the side. The portions were hearty, so took some home for later. The fried tofu for an appetizer was great. Not too heavy and lightly cooked. I'LL BE BACK!

  • Joseph B.

Service was abysmal. Food was slow to come out and waitress never checked on us, refilled our drinks, and had to be called over for the check. Food was good, but for the money there are other well-staffed Thai places nearby.

One star pending second attempt. Went there with the family on a Saturday evening. We were seated promptly, and forgotten just as quickly. Five minutes. Nothing. Ten minutes. Nothing. 15 minutes. Nothing. Still no intro from our server, no apology for the delay or explanation. No drink orders taken. We walked out and drove to Soya on 21st to recover from this failed customer service experience and get some food. We'll probably try again because I like Thai food and the menu looked good...will update again giving them a clean slate.

My favorite Thai restaurant in Virginia. My husband and I made sure to eat here before we moved. Love their Pad Thai and Pad See Ewe. Very generous portions and decent price. Service is fast. Overall wonderful place. They also started giving military discount. We miss this place already!

Rama Garden had been on my to-go list for quite some time. Don't know why I put off this one off for so long! Thai, being one of my favorite types of foods I had high expectations, especially since the Yelp reviews were holding it to a standard. It's a clean place but the décor was all wrong, traditional Thai clashing with modernized Thai. EW! Our waitress was beyond nice, she even brought a candle to the table just in case the lighting was too dim, it wasn't though. Thoughtful! Started with Jasmine Tea, Tom ka, and Katatong. Jasmine Tea - Was very good, served in a really pretty tea cup with a cover to keep hot Tom ka - SO GOOD! A fav of the night!(coconut milk soup with galangal, mushroom, hot & sour lemongrass, served with either chicken, shrimp or seafood mix) Katatong - Missed that this was fried before it was ordered , but it was still enjoyed (shrimp wrapped with marinated minced chicken, shitake mushroom cellophane noodle deep-fried served with sweet plum sauce) After all the aps, it was time to order the main dish. I asked if the entrées were big enough for two people, I don't think our waitress really understood cause she said it was enough for me... So we decided to order two dishes. Chicken Pad Thai & Pad See Eaw. When dinner came out my eyes got wide, with our 2 dishes we could have fed 4 people. I knew what I was having for lunch the next day. Chicken Pad Thai- WOW! It was right on the money, so good. The noodles were done right and the sauce was spot on not to little not too much. Very good flavor. (Stir-fried thin rice noodles with bean sprout, scallion, peanut, and egg.) Pad See Eaw -Mmmmm, I really liked the texture of the flat noodles, not overly salty, beef had really good flavor. (Stir-fried flat noodle, broccoli, carrot, and egg with chef's special sauce) The food was excellent even though we didn't even finish half of it. We were saving room for the Mango Sticky Rice dessert. Mango Sticky Rice - Always a must when out for Thai. Good, but I have had better. (Sliced Mango, Sweet Sticky rice with cream) I was very happy with dinner, I finally have good spot for Thai....

Pad Thai was the best I have ever had. Prices were fair. Pleased with the service and can't wait to come back and try some more dishes. Food was fresh and tasty! My favorite Thai restaurant in Norfolk so far. One of the few places actually opened on a Sunday!

Just good! I had the ragon appetizers- yummy, creamy goodness. Sauce, amazing. Then I had chicken pad see ew...huge portions. I had dinner, night time snack and breakfast from the one serving. I added a little kick with the hot spices. Every bite was great and my tummy was pleased. I will go again when I'm in the area.

YUM! We visited Rama Garden Thai Cuisine 2 nights ago and werent disappointed at all! The food was delicious. We had the Crab Rangoon as an appetizer and it was excellent! Ive found it really hard to find a well made crab rangoon in this area so I was really happy when i took that first bite and it was delicious. For our entrees I had the Thai Noodle Soup and my fiance had the Pan See Eaw. Both were fantastic. We would definitely recommend either. I was a little nervous going since in previous reviews people had commented on the service, but our server was extremely nice and helpful when we had questions about some of the dishes. I would definitely go back here anytime for thai food and would recommend it to anyone that looks for one!

My boyfriend and I just discovered Rama Garden about 6 months ago and we have been ordering there almost every other week since. We almost always order the Larb Gai to split. It is so fresh and flavorful and healthy, I have tried to make it myself but it's not nearly as good as Rama Garden's. I love soup and I've tried all of their soups the Tom Kha is my favorite. Just the right amount of spice for me and so different than the soups I usually eat. The Drunken Noodles are one of my favorites as well but it's very spicy (in my book) so I ask them to tone that down a bit. The Thai fried rice is absolutely delicious and huge! I have no idea what is different in its preparation compared to the fried rice you normally get at a Chinese restaurant, but it taste much better to us. The healthy ginger dish and green curry are a couple others we always go to. Whenever we try new dishes, I am pleased except when neglect to note how spicy a dish is. We always carry out simply so I can't comment on the dine-in service, but I've always been warmly greeted when I come in and our orders are always ready in a timely manner. The prices are very reasonable considering the portions are big. We will continue to patron Rama Garden as long as it's here!

Rama Garden has the best thai food in the Norfolk area. Their secret is that they use FRESH ingredients that actually project the flavor of the cuisine. My obsessed dish from here is the pad see ew , beef with five star spiceness. They make the dish nice and spicy without compromising the flavor of the dish. Overall, a great restaurant for thai food in the downtown Norfolk area. Bad parking though.

I work nearby and we go to Rama weekly. I'm not a fan of spicy food so I really like the pad Thai. My buddies usually get the drunken noodles with varying spice levels. The portions are great, I can usually take half back to the office to eat later. It's a nice atmosphere with quick service. In the summer it can get pretty cold in there so bring something warm to wear.

  • Edward K.

Drunken noodles were great with just the right amount of heat. If you like spicy Thai food they deliver. The best drunken noodles I've had in the area by far. The papaya salad was darn good too. Spring rolls were good but I've had better.

I've gone here for almost 3 years now, I can't believe I haven't reviewed it yet! I love getting a nice veggie plate here with lots of mushrooms & noodles. I have never had a bad meal here, but have often had leftovers I can never quite overcome. We actually brought a group of about 20 to Rama 2 years ago for my 21st birthday party (that's how much I love them) and everything went amazing! You generally expect disasters to arise from large groups and language barriers but nothing went wrong. The staff here are so sweet too, the owner came out with several desserts & sang Happy Birthday - it was perfect. Go here, gorge yourself on thai goodness.

Great Thai food in downtown Norfolk! Food is good here and service as well. Parking can be a bit hard to find as it's right in downtown. Will definitely come back when looking for Thai food. Summary of what we had: Delicious dishes: -Pad Thai - fantastic! Noodles were perfect texture... and not too sweet. Was my favorite dish. -Green Curry - Decent... not too spicy. Wish it had a little bit more kick to it. I also enjoy curry that has coconut in it... didn't get much of that in here -House Special Fried Rice - the classic pineapple fried rice. Yummy! Served in half a pineapple. Will definitely get this again. SKIP THESE: -Beef Salad - eh... was basically a big glop of onion-y roast beef with some romaine lettuce sprinkled in. Not really a salad.... don't get this if your'e looking for veggies! -Kapow! - recommended by waiter, said it's the best dish. It's supposed to be a spicy dish but I didn't find it that great. Will skip this next time

This is the best Thai restaurant in the Hampton Roads in term of food quality and very consistent. I would give more than a 5 stars for the food but the service is what brings the overall evaluation down. We've been eating here for the past 3 years since I've been in this area and spent thousands on this restaurant alone. We brought friends, family members, and recommend it to anybody we spoke to. But the service is on and off, there are good, bad, and worst day, depended on who the server is. Thanks to the terrible service, our guests felt just like they had to eat under pressure and it started with the server angrily demand us to take the other. It's hard for me to describe in detail without being long, but it's like you are in the changing room as a football player and being yelled at by the football coach. We repeatedly asked the server not to put the peanut into the papaya salad and Padthai because our guests had asthma so they are allergic with it, the response I got from the server was with a cold face "excuse me, she had already told me that!". Guess what, peanuts were mixed into the food, luckily we found out, but our guests couldn't eat his favorite dishes that he paid for. I still love the food, but we might have to spend time looking for other Thai alternative with better service.

Absolutely love this place, service is always great and the food has never disappointed me :), And no MSG in their food which is a huge plus for me!!!! The only thing is the parking..but it is downtown and frankly I suck at parallel. LOL, but I love coming here and walking from the parking garage is no biggy :)

My second time coming here. The food look like a work of art, but the flavor is just OK. I had the appetizer called Angel Wings. It is three chicken wings stuffed with seafood and shredded chicken. Without the chili sauce to dip, those things were had no additional flavor that a regular chicken wing has. I was expecting a whole new experience. The entree I had was good, but not outstanding.

My favorite Thai place in Norfolk has always been Bangkok Garden off of 21st street--but they have been closed due to moving locations for a while now, so I've been cheating on them and trying some of the other local Thai restaurants. That's what led me to Rama Garden (and has brought me back 4 or 5 times since). It's located on Granby street right next to the clubs. The restaurant itself has a good overall presentation and ambiance. Service has always been good when I've come here as well. The food is amazing. I've never been disappointed, nor has any of the dozen or so people that I've brought here since the first time I've tried it. As a side note... When I go to a thai restaurant, I generally order chicken pad thai (very white of me, I know) and get it around medium on the spicy scale. In my experience with thai restaurants, as a white guy, I NEVER get the food as spicy as I like. So I remove any anxiety they may have about giving me a "thai spicy" dish and ask for a spice tray so I can do it myself. I recommend this approach to anyone else who likes it REALLY spicy.

I truly love this place and hope that it continues to maintain its quality. I've gone here a few times and it doesn't seem to get busy. Maybe I've just gone at off times? My safe dish when trying a Thai place is their Chicken Pad Thai (picture). It was delicious and the portion was enough for two people! I also ordered the Thai Iced Tea (picture) and was pleasantly surprised that I had to mix it. The service is great and the decor is lovely. My only gripe is that it's not closer to home.

Good experience, but it was on a quiet night. Had the duck, which had many flavors. It was a little distracting but still tasted amazing. The Calamari was amazing, and yes it was with red wine (don't remember the name) but it was complementary.

I'm not great at writing about food. What I am great at is returning multiple times for a dish or dishes that I love. The thai noodle soup is one of my favorite meals here. I ALWAYS order it. Enough said.

I'm from California, where they have excellent Thai food, but this restaurant really surprised me on my recent visit. Their food was amazing, and service was stellar as well. They made each of the dishes to our taste, and even went back a couple times to adjust. I definitely look forward to coming back to this restaurant when I am in the area again.

First, and most importantly, the server was hot. FOUR STARS! The end. Okay, but you don't care about that (yes, you do - don't lie to yourself) I had never been to Rama Garden Thai even though I've lived in the area for my whole life and Thai may be my favorite food on the planet, so tisk tisk on me. I just started working in DTN again so I had to put this place on the top of my list to try. Went in for lunch and had a very pleasant experience - nice lunch crowd, quick service, really great prices for lunch time. I got the pad thai with chicken and it was around $8.00 for a ton of food. I was able to eat half and bring the other half home for dinner. Seasoning for the pad was right on point. I will definitely return here ...for multiple reasons.

I agree with the other reviews in that the decor here is a bit bizarre. The colors are mostly blue and yellow/tan. It felt astronomical. I liked the Thai portraits on the wall, but with the tables and chairs, things did not mix. The food however was very delicious. I ordered the lar na with a papaya salad. Both were very yummie! The portions here are huge. There was a group of 8 of us and we were in and out of here within an hour. They were very accommodating as well because they let us all do separate checks. Prices here are very reasonable. The place only loses a star because our waitress got one of our appetizer orders wrong and blamed it on us (even though we know the waitress heard the order incorrectly).

High hopes fell flat. Maybe I just ordered the wrong dish? Should have went with the drunken noodles or pad thai? Service and decor was lovely, but it can't make up for the disappointing food. My friend and I both ordered stir-fry (mine Sriracha beef, him mango beef) and they pretty much looked exactly the same but with different colored sauce. I'm not a big fan when the veggie-to-meat ratio favors veggies or when the meat strips are tiny and lack flavor. It's also not a good sign when stir-fry is really heavy on the sauce, like it looks like a puddle. My rice tasted overcooked too, which may be because I got here after 9 on a Saturday night. My favorite part of the meal was the Thai iced tea...big glass!

I'm not a connoisseur of Thai food, which is pretty obvious. However, my first experience eating Thai food happened to be the most authentic & tasty, thus far. Even though I hold the bar pretty high, I tend to venture in to other Thai restaurants to see what they have to offer. Although I didn't order it, I did taste the curry duck dish. I didn't think the pineapples would appeal to my palate - but I was wrong. The pineapples worked perfectly with the curry - creamy, but not too sweet. I ordered my chicken ka pow, which was okay. It had a lot of flavor, but was a bit low on the heat. The drinks were pretty good, and the service was excellent. The dining area was very empty when I first entered; but, as happy hour approached, so did the happy patrons. It was easy to find parking (street). I, for one, loved the decor - historic photos, bright lights, and overall pleasing to the eye. Rama Garden gets a solid three stars from me!

I must say Rama Garden Thai has the best selection and taste in the 757. Always a pleasure to enjoy a nice meal with awesome customer service.

Best Thai food in Hampton roads. I usually get the pad see ew (beef) thin flat noodles with a sweet/soy sauce served with vegatables. I try to come here every time I shop. Totally worth it during lunch specials too! Anyways definitely recommend!

This visit was about my fifth time to Rama Garden. I asked for my favorite dish of theirs, Thai fried rice with steak, which is usually on the special board. I was told that they don't have that anymore and that they were out of the steak. Bummed, I ordered the beef fried rice instead. We finished our spring rolls and the tasty Tom Yum soup. Waiting, we had our iced tea glasses filled up twice. I was starting to get a little antsy about waiting so long when our waitress came toward our table with our plates. "I have a surprise for you" she said, and presented me with a plate of Thai fried rice with steak! It was great as usual and I really appreciate her effort. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her chicken fried rice. These dishes are made with Jasmine rice and bear little resemblance to the normal fried rice you would get from a Chinese take-out. Picture of my meal to follow... Note for the record: I like a variety of Thai dishes and have had many other items from my favorite Thai Siam in Colleen, VA. I just happen to really like the steak fried rice :-)

I live downtown so I'm here at Rama pretty often. The food never disappoints and the staff is pretty friendly. I love the red curry and chicken pad Thai! And for dessert, I always get the black sticky rice pudding. Getting hungry just thinking about it!!

  • Kimberly H.

The food is ok. A bit overpriced. FYI, these are one of the restaurants that will charge an extra $1 for an extra bowl of rice. I prefer Bangkok Garden as my go-to for Thai food. This restaurant is off granby street, so it's street parking. Wait staff was decent. It is a quiet restaurant, so you can have good dinner conversation there. But I wasn't too impressed.

I consider myself a Thai food junkie and this place is by far the best in Norfolk. We have tried all of the other Thai restaurants in the area and none of them are as good as Rama Garden. I eat mostly vegetarian and my two favorite dishes are Pad See Ew and the Spicy Eggplant. The Pad See Ew has just the right flavor and enough veggies and the Spicy Eggplant has a little kick but it's not too spicy for me. My Husband on the other hand is a spice junkie and his favorite is the Pad Thai with shrimp level 5 spicy. I don't know that he has actually ever tasted the food because it is so hot but he loves it anyway The only bad thing I can say about this place is that the service is a bit slow when you eat there (we get carry out a lot) but I will put up with slow service for food this good. Go try it, it will be better than any of the other Thai places around and you will be addicted like me.

Excellent food at a reasonable price! I would highly reccomend this place. I visit Norfolk a few times a year and always come here. If you like Thai food this is the place to go in Norfolk.

This place was my first experience with Thai food. I had the pad thai with beef at level 2 spiciness and crab rangoons. The food was delicious and the waiter was extremely helpful explaining things to me.

  • Pinkbabe L.

Sorry, this is not the authentic Thai food place. The curry we ordered tonight were aweful. The red curry and panang curry are really watery, and no flavor. They didnt even ask how spicy do we want. It's not worth the price. I dont know how much water they add in the iced thai tea because it's not tasty. Really disappointed. Not going back.

    (1)
  • Hansel L.

As a lot of people have already said - def. my favorite thai food in Norfolk. Not the best I've had, but well done and service is pretty good. Drunk noodles on "3 spicy" is pretty solid along with some panang/red curry. I suggest you go for the lunch special if you can. I'm a pretty big eater and you'll end up being full (though I typically order an extra serving of rice)

    (4)
  • Glen G.

We brought a large group in on a night when they only had one service person but he did a great job of keeping everything coming and serving us throughout the night. However, the food was good but not great. The spices outweighed the flavor in my opinion. Some of the appetizers were good - especially the crab rangoon and the calamari.

  • Lauren R.

Whenever my 2 coworkers and I decide to eat lunch in downtown Norfolk, Rama Garden is normally the winner or runner-up. Featuring the best Thai food I've ever had, you should certainly pay them a visit. Between the three of us we've never had a bad meal. The staff is extremely friendly and everyone always has a smile on their face. I'm a creature of habit so I've only ever ordered one thing, but that's how good it is. The Pad See Eaw (either shrimp or just veggies) is what I've landed on. All lunches come with their house salad that's served with some sort of peanut dressing that's to die for! The inexpensive price tag on meals isn't a bad thing either. My leftovers made a great dinner the following night!

  • Sherene S.

I had the most appalling panang curry I've ever tasted at this restaurant. The sauce was gritty and very weird tasting. The vegetables were also over cooked. This restaurant does not cook from scratch, instead they use already prepared products. To make the curry they tossed vegetables into a sauce that came from a can. This is not what I expect from a restaurant. My children's pad thai was very disappointing and they have elected not to eat at this restaurant again. I could see no correlation between the meal we ate at Rama Garden and the reviews I saw on Yelp.

Ohhhh, Rama Garden, how I love thee... so much so, that I will attempt a previously unattempted feat... I will write you poetry. You're not better than sex Not really even close But I can definitely Have you every day Uh, I'm actually not sure that's iambic, but it's the best I can do... my love is limited by my poetic retardedness. The point is, this is DAMN good Thai. I love saying that I've had ____ all over the world (in this case ______ = Thai), because it help conveys the level of competition a restaurant had to go through to earn a place in my heart. Rama, is no doubt, fast becoming one of my favorite Thai restaurants purely on the merit of a few dishes I've had there. I certainly haven't even came close to having everything on the menu, but everything I had so far had been so spectaculat. May be I just got lucky and happened to have had the right dishes, but it's freaking good and I'm sticking to it. I really would recommend eating there just once for the experience and then doing taking out after that. As one of the previous reviewers said, it's definitely got a slightly ghetto fabulous feel to it with the blue ambient light that makes you feel like a disco is about to break out any moment. Not to mention all the tables AND the pictures (yes, you read correctly, the pictures) are covered in glitter. Fun and fascinating, but once is probably sufficient. If you go, I recommend one of the following (in order of minimally decreasing yumminess): pad see ew, chicken friend rice, and noodle soup. Yum! Eat on!

We LOVE Rama Garden. Been twice now..the first time, my green curry was good but definitely not hot enough (temperature, not spice). The second time I ordered the green curry again and it was hot and the spiciness was right on. There is something for everyone, even if you don't like spicy food. My mom's Pad Thai was delicious and my grandmother loves their Thai Fried Rice. I was especially impressed with the fried rice because it's not greasy like Chinese fried rice, but rather light and very well seasoned. I also appreciate that the place was not NOISY. We went on a Friday night and it was quite pleasant. Only downside is parking...there is a handicapped spot right out front so it wasn't a problem for us, but generally parking downtown can be complicated and this restaurant doesn't have a lot.

Based on the other reviews, I must have gone to this restaurant on a bad night. We went the night before labor day, and there was only one waitress. She was also working as the bartender and the front hostess. My wife and I walked in and waited about 10 minutes at the front before she came over and seated us. It seemed like it took her forever to do simple things like get someone's check. The diners seated next to us had been waiting to order since we walked in. Overall, everyone seemed irritated at the subpar service. That said, the food was fantastic. I ordered the Thai tea, which was sweet, creamy, and delicious. We both ordered the Pad Thai with chicken, and it was the best Pad Thai I've ever had. I've probably tried this dish at 7-8 different Thai restaurants, this was the best. The sauce was exceptionally flavorful, and there was PLENTY on the plate. Even though the service was not good, I'll be going back. I'm sure they were understaffed when we went and that the service will be better on our next visit.

The food was amazing. I got the beef salad and loved it and my boyfriend got the drunken noodles and loved that too. All of it was so good. We shared the sweet rice mango for dessert and were both crazy about it. This was our first time but we'll definitely be coming back.

Been here twice while in Norfolk. Had the veggie Pad Thai last night. Big portion. Tasty, with crisp vegetables. Not as spicy as I would have liked, but I didn't specify as such. Good thai ice tea. Attentive service.

ABSOLUTELY MOUTHWATERING THAI FOOD! I had the Pad See Eaw and it was stunning. Not "as good as sex," but still pretty darn good ;) The food portions are large--I'll have enough leftovers for two meals--but vary based upon dish. I believe the curries are smaller than the noodle dishes. One important note: the side of rice for curries is quite petite. And if you order another side of rice (the size of a large scoop of icecream), you'll end up forking over another $1.50. Nonetheless: great food, nice seating, good service. Check it out!

Love Rama Thai...just wished they offered a "to go" option for corporate professionals with busy lunch hours. I've tried many different things and have never had a bad experience. I have a toddler with a very "refined pallet" aka as picky eater and he LOVES the crab fried rice.

This place was awesome, and I am not even the biggest fan of Thai food. I will go back next time I am in Norfolk. We got the Prik King, which was my favorite, crab Rangoon, Tom yum soup and Thai sticky rice for dessert. It was all really incredible. The service was great, nice ambiance, good music and it wasn't super noisy so you could talk. Go here!

I love this place so, so much. The atmosphere is absolutely bizarre, and the food is fantastic. The place is fairly small and dark, and the choice of decorations gives one pause. It's an odd mix of Eastern meets IKEA meets diner. The music is just as strange, but as a friend of mine likes to say, the quality of the music in an Asian restaurant is often inversely proportional to the quality of the food. In this case, her theory is upheld. I favor the vegetable soup and the cashew beef, but I have never tasted anything here that I didn't LOVE. The sauces are light and well-seasoned, and the meats are never overdone. Keep an eye out for the "angle wings" on the appetizer menu - tasty and good for a laugh.

    (5)
  • Mike S.

Ugh, I'd love to like this place, but their mediocre food just doesn't cut it; a bit overpriced too, so I can't recommend coming for anything other than lunch. Our appetizer (papaya salad) was drowning in dressing and the "spicy" soup was not at all "spicy." Also, waiting 15 minutes before a waiter even ~*notices*~ you sorta sucks. Spend your money elsewhere!

  • Betty T.

The food here is definitely good and we always get a second meal out of the entrees. Green curry, panang curry, and pad thai are all delicious. The decorations and atmosphere can only be described as eccentric. It is never crowded, and one of the best restaurants downtown.

Rama Gardens is a great value. The food is true the Thai cuisine and the service was good. My new place in Norfolk for Thai. Tom Yum is excellent. Spicy Thai Fried Rice made my nose water - great stuff.

Just a quick pop in based on current reviews. Not much to write since it's top notch. I try and make it a point to eat Thai food wherever I travel so I've sampled a lot! In a nutshell, Rama Garden delivers everything you'd expect in Thai food, fresh, light and tasty. The moment I left (dinner) I thought about going back for lunch the next day.

Lunch twice this week. I recommend the curry dishes and the spicy eggplant dish (YOU MUST TRY THIS). No really, the eggplant dish is to die for. Drunkard Noodles are awesome unless you've had them at Rabieng in falls church, if so wait until you get home. Nice Thai ambiance, musak sound.

Best Fried Rice Ever!!! and i've had a lot of fried rice. The chicken fried rice is truly outstanding. my girlfriend had the Pad See Eaw which was equally amazing. The decor is modern with some Thai flavor. Service was definitely above average and friendly. the atmosphere is mostly comfortable and quiet except if you have loud talking neighbor at the next table. but it's not enough to knock it down to 4 stars. it's almost as good as sex.

ATMOSPHERE: Weird decor... Dimly lit with neon blue lights on ceiling with sparkly, glittery tables at the booth seating. Futuristic, space-age type chairs at the other tables. Portrait paintings of what looked like figures of Thai history... military officials or something. Pretty big space with tables good for groups. Bar seating with flat screen on either sides which weren't too loud. FOOD: We just went here for drinks and appetizers before going out. The appetizer menu was full of fried items. It was hard to find something not fried. Typical fast food chinese fast food items on there like fried wontons, egg rolls among other more unique things. I didn't explore the other items on the menu. Anyways, we got: 1. Satay - 4 chicken skewers grilled. It says with peanut sauce but it doesn't taste like peanut sauce but it was really good. Tasted like there was some coconut milk or something in it as well. The other sauce - BLEH. It had cucumber, onions and some sweet clear syrup... yuck. DRINKS: I made my own drink with melon vodka and club soda easily without any problems. They have martinis and mixed drinks but they all looked very sweet as I am not into those kind of super sweet girly drinks. My drink was huge! (see pic) and of satisfactory strength. Average beer selection. PRICES: Satay $7, 22 oz Sapporo $8, melon vodka with club soda $6. Average prices I would. I saw signs on the table with happy hour M-F, 5-7pm I believe with beers $2-3. SERVICE: Great and prompt. However, there was only 1 other table there and it was around 7pm. I guess people went to other places with specials for NYE. CONCLUSION: Good service. Good food.

My husband I have eaten at this restaurant many times and we are now a fan of thai food. We've always had great service and the place is clean and decent. I'm not sure what some reviewers are talking about when they say they are disappointed in the food and service. I normally order the chicken pad thai, chicken fried rice, and the matsumam curry and they are all excellent. All dishes are made with white meat and the servings are so generous that I have leftovers the next day.

  • Whitney W.

Really good Thai food. White meat chicken & delicious flavors. The curry dishes are great, as is the drunken noodles dish (spicy flat noodles). The atmosphere is nice, with well thought out decorative details. Staff is attentive and friendly.

This was a true find in the area. We had read the reviews and were a bit skeptical bout trying it. But what a pleasant surprise. The food was absolutely delicious. Every dish was so flavorful. The portions are generous however was very disappointed because they give very little rice with the entrees. The only upsetting thing was that the waitress was very unpleasant. I don't think she smiled once and looked very unhappy to be there.

My husband's family came to visit last week, and after touring the battleship Wisconsin, they were ready for a meal. I suggested taking a walk down Granby to show them all the restaurants on display, and surely we'd find something to eat. We stumbled across Rama Garden Thai, which none of us knew anything about (except that we all like Thai food), so we took the chance and went inside. I'm so pleased we did! Rama Garden is a truly beautiful restaurant, with some of the loveliest decor I have seen in a Thai restaurant. Furthermore, the service is very good and the food is, by far, the high point. They do not tone down the spiciness in their dishes, so if you see two chili peppers by the dish you want on the menu, be very afraid! (Unless, like me, you ENJOY having your mouth burn for 20 minutes after your meal, haha. Really, it is a good thing!) I had a Thai Iced Tea and my husband had Thai Coffee. He had the tofu soup and I had vegetable soup -- both were so good that we were drinking the broth at the end. His brother had the calamari, which we did not try, but he did say it was a little chewy. They had a surprisingly expansive vegetarian menu -- when walking off the street, we had no idea there would be so many options for us. For entrees, I had the tofu prik king, which was the spiciest prik king I've ever had. I absolutely loved it! My husband had the tofu green curry, which I tasted and was also delicious. Other dishes served at the table were sriracha with beef, pad scallop, and I'm not entirely sure what his mother got, but it was a chicken dish. Everyone cleaned their plates and couldn't stop talking about how good the food was. I will absolutely come to Rama Garden again. I'd recommend it to anyone, especially vegetarians. I have been to many Thai restaurants in the area, but never found one with such an expansive veg menu before.

Best Thai food in the Hampton Roads area. After a year and a half of trying pad see yu at nearly every Thai restaurant around, I've determined that they have the most flavorful, fresh, and tantalizing food. Prices and ambiance are great as well--most lunch entrees are under $10 (and their servings are HUGE). The staff is always really nice and cordial and everyone I take there loves it. Oh, did I mention they have a great happy hour during the week?--good drink specials =)

After striking out at a few restaurants on Granby, and absolutely finished with the traffic, i've just about had it with Downtown Norfolk! But this place will get me to come back a few more times. The food was excellent and it wasn't crowded at all (too bad for them, but great for us). Nothing wrong with the decor and don't care anyway. My wife had the panang curry, which was great. Not soupy like some of the others we've had. I had noodles kapaw (basil). Fantastic. Good spice on both dishes and great portions. With that, a great papaya salad and two beers, only cost $37. I like Bangkok on 21st also, but this is worth the traffic... For a little while longer.

I eat here weekly to the point where the staff has my order down to perfection! Great place to be a vegetarian, and its consistently good food unlike most Thai places in the area that are hit or miss. I only wish they delivered... Go!

Nice place. The beef siam was amazing! I will say I've never had bad thai food before so I may not be the best judge, but the food was good. Atmosphere is a little weird. Some guy was playing on an electronic piano kinda karaoke sounding, but it made it an interesting experience. I also had a garden salad with peanut sauce, which was good. Prices are pretty cheap in my opinion and you walk away full. I did order a chicken tom ka and never got it. I was full by the end so I didn't care. Thank fully it wasn't charged to me, but honestly I think it was a miscommunication about the amount of food I ordered just for me. I think the waitress didn't actually believe that I wanted soup, salad and appetizer.

  • Bob L.

Since I am half Thai with a mother that caters Thai food, I am always comparing her food to Thai restaurants that I visit. Taste buds are a bit biased. I ordered the Pad Thai and the Lad Na to go. Since Pad Thai is the most common Thai dish, I use this as a baseline for how I judged the restaurant. The Pad Thai at Rama Garden has good flavor. Not heavy in fish sauce but a tad bit too oily. Everything else, spot on. Lad Na was, eh...

  • Kristen F.

My husband and I ate here and both the food and service were excellent. I had the Pad Thai with Chicken, which was very flavorful. My husband had the Spicy Fried Rice with Beef, which he really enjoyed. The portions were large, I had two additional meals from my leftovers. The service was great. Our waitress was very attentive and continously checked her section to see if anyone needed anything without being disruptive. We enjoyed our meal immensely and will definitely be coming back.

As good a Thai restaurant as I've eaten in (at least in the U.S.) My family and I ate here for lunch and all liked it. Beautifully presented, deliciously seasoned food. Spicier and more highly seasoned than most Thai restaurants in Tidewater; not overdone just not dumbed down for Anglos, so medium spice will be enough unless you like truly spicy food. I REALLY liked my green beans with chili sauce & chicken, my wife loved her lemongrass soup, and the kiddos ate up the Pad Thai. Friendly, prompt, if somewhat inexperienced service. Reasonable prices for such a delicious lunch, though we didn't notice alcohol prices. Truthfully, I did not mind the decor--not in my living room perhaps, but in a Thai Restaurant was OK.

  • Robt. G.

Nothing special. Food was flat. It didn't have the fresh and spicy feel of Thai food. Ate with a large group and sampled many different dishes. Just OK.

Girlfriend and I went there the other night and the drinks were great! The waitress was extremely friendly and prompt with everything. We got the spring rolls as an appetizer and loved it! The sriracha was great. They had a heavy vegetarian menu too and the prices were fair. Please try if you are ever on Granby!

I have been here a few times and it's usually pretty good service. The reason I am came here was because I love Pad see ew and although I like Bankok Garden better, Rama has the thick noodles that I looooove. I only gave three stars instead of 4, however, because the night we went there were only 1 waiter for like 10 tables and service was sllooooooow. I have had better service here before so i wish I could give it 3 1/2 stars. But im sure to return one day to see if they can bump themselves up a star:)
