Had lunch here the other day. Most people probably miss this place as they are driving through Old Town Manassas - it's easy to drive right by it and not see the place. I've been wondering about this place for some time - so I decided to check it out. Now I came to find out that it's not your standard Deli. They characterize themselves as an "International Deli." I noticed dishes that touched across the Greek, Italian, Mexican culinary genres - and others. Menu items include foods such as: Shrimp Bisque, Chicken Salad, Chimichangas, Cous cous, Spanokopita, Pasta Prima Vera, Hummus, Greek Salad, Quesadillas, and more - such as sandwiches. They also offer fresh fruit, desserts, etc. It was past the lunch rush - so I was the only customer in the place. There was a little lady behind the counter - her command of English was not the greatest - I was having trouble understanding her. They have a hot bar where there are several hot Entrees of the day available each day. She was telling me what each hot dish was - but I could not understand her. I pointed to one and she gave me a small cup of it to taste. It was a very savory, rich casserole dish that had some amazing chunks of sausage in it. It was like a cross between a casserole and stuffing. It was excellent! So I decided to have that dish - whatever it was. She then told me I also get some sides with it. I managed to understand "garlic mashed potatoes" so I selected that - and some sort of lentil salad. The mashed potatoes were heavenly! Chef George Richa owns and runs the place. He also does catering. Definitely will be coming back here again! ----------- I sent an e-mail to the restaurant asking what the name of the dish was - Michel Richa just e-mailed me back to tell me the name of the dish is: Breval Melange I've Googled that name and can find no mention of it!

I am conflicted about Old Town Caterers and Deli. The food is tasty and I want to support local companies. But inconsistencies in quality and a sexist owner make it easy to not be a frequent customer. With a hot menu that rotates daily, customers are always in for a treat. It is rare to see the same thing served twice. Flavor is never lacking. Even simple dishes such as chicken and rice are flavorful and filling with tender meat and generous servings. The food is fresh, and served with friendly conversation and a happy smile. A non-rotating salad bar menu contains inconsistently prepared pastas, hummus, and ambrosia. One week you'll order pistachio ambrosia salad, orzo, and hummus and you'll regret not getting more. The flavors will be smooth, sweet, a little complex, and will hit all the right notes. The next week you'll order the same items and they will taste nothing like the first order. Sometimes the cold dishes are good, sometimes, they aren't. Sometimes the hummus is light and creamy with a hint of lemon. Sometimes it tastes like mayonnaise. Pro Tip: If ordering hummus, make sure to get enough pita. The pita is thin, and unless you ask for extra, they will only give you a handful of slices. Unlike most places where there is too much pita and too little hummus, here the opposite is true. The inconsistencies in the cold dishes by themselves are not enough to keep me from regularly frequenting this establishment. I could easily ask to taste the cold dishes prior to purchase, or stick entirely to the hot dishes of the day. An owner with openly sexist opinions keeps me at bay. Recently when seeking a new employee, multiple individuals were turned away because the position was "suited to a woman". When I mentioned that I knew an individual who would be happy just to have a job, the owner stated that he was not considering men for the position. He had in fact already told several men no, so it would make him look bad if he hired a man. A woman would be happier to clean, more likely to take instructions and less likely to overstep boundaries. He noted that customers would be hesitant to approach a man taking orders. While he is entitled to his opinions especially regarding what is best for his company, actively refusing to hire a man is against EEO regulations. More importantly, local restaurants need the support of the community, and should in turn support the community from which it expects to flourish. Anyone can clean.

The most ridiculous, almost comedically bad, caterer I have ever dealt with. I could write a book about their ridiculous antic's on my friends wedding day. To call the Owner/Chef "extremely incompetent" is being generous and giving him the benefit of the doubt, because otherwise his actions are criminal. He triple charged for tip in advance, saying it was included when they signed the contract, then charging again with the deposit, and yet again two days before the wedding. He told the Bride and Groom that he would not show up unless they paid him 15% again! Just outrageously bad business at best. He arrived at the venue with a huge prima donna attitude. A lot of complaining about all the things everyone else had done wrong. The food was good. Yummy, in fact. That was not the problem. It was the leadership. It took pleading with them to get them to bus tables. They had the nerve to start serving cake when not one guest had had their empty plate removed. At this point all guest were done eating and not a single empty dish or glass or bottle had been removed from the tables. Did I mention how The Captain served her staff cake and cupcakes before the guests? Actually plated them up in front of the entire reception and carried them passed everyone and into the back kitchen? Yeah, that actually happened. They also tried to pack up and leave at 8:30pm when the reception went until 11pm. They actually managed to sneak a truck and half their staff out before 9pm. The other truck and remaining staff disappeared at 10pm. They just vanished with their stuff and left all the debris on the reception tables and huge bags of leaking trash on the floors of the kitchen. The Bride, Groom, their families and friends were forced to spend the morning after the wedding cleaning up the caterers mess. These people have NO idea how to off-site cater. None. What a disaster they were.

I stopped by the Old Town Deli this afternoon. Even though it was my first visit to the establishment, George made me feel like a regular. I ordered the chicken puff pastry served over spicy garlic mash potatoes with the shrimp bisque. It was all fantastic. I could not recommend this place highly enough. I will be returning in the future.

George, you are a truly talented chef! You are to be commended on your creative culinary cuisine! The pork roast you served for lunch today was exceptional. The fresh roasted vegetables and brown rice were delicious. I look forward to seeing what sort of creations you are going to come up with on my next visit. I only wish that you were open on the weekends and for dinner during the week.
