Don't judge a book by it's cover. Even though the place looked closed from the outside, this little diner was full of friendly people. The food is delicious and is made from local food sources. The servings are generous. If I were a local I would make this my hangout. Since I'm not a local this will have to be an occasional pilgrimage for me.

The Little Grill has been a fave for years. Consistently yummy vegan food at amazingly reasonable prices. We go out of our way to visit the Little Grill any chance we get.

We stopped here for a scrambled tofu breakfast on the way from New Jersey to North Carolina. It was great. Looking forward to our next road trip, just so we can eat here. Very cute. Also want to mention that this place is CLEAN! Seriously seriously seriously clean. When we got there, someone was cleaning off the newspaper boxes OUTSIDE because they were dirty. Hugs to the Little Grill Collective.

Homespun goodness. My kids and love going here in our pajamas first thing in the morning! Food is fresh, healthy, and the people are genuine.

Just stopped here on our way down I-81 after I refused fast food for lunch. Used to come here frequently in grad school & still love it as much now as then. Husband got BBQ chicken sandwich w/ spicy fries & I got my fav, tempeh reuben. Of course, we got one of their amazing cookies too. Don't forget they only do cash or check- no cc. It is a little grubby inside, out, & in the surrounding area, but the food is good, prices are low, the people work hard, are very friendly & honest, it supports local farmers, musicians & artists, and accepts all comers. What more can you want?

Hey, this place was pretty chill. Just north of that awkward drive-around-the-courthouse deal in Harrisonburg. I had ginger lemonade (pretty good, plus I've been on a ginger kick) and a breakfast plate. I had a biscuit with (vegetarian) gravy, a potato cake (like a more finely ground latke, and really good) and eggs. I also had grits, which were kinda meh. My family liked their food too.

All-you-can-eat taco nite is awesome! Fantastic atmosphere, friendly staff, delicious and very well priced food. Yum yum yum! We had such a fun time here! We can't wait to go back!

Breakfast here is AMAZING. Great coffee. Great service. A really cool eclectic space. If you're in Harrisonburg, you need to stop in. And the apple cinnamon pancakes are out of this world! Can't wait to get back to the 'burg to be back here.

I was out here for work and discovered this gem in the middle of nowhere! it was fantastic! not the healthiest vegan fare....but delicious and vegan non-the-less. i had dinner here the night of my work show and breakfast the next morning before i headed back into washington DC. for dinner i ordered a soup and a salad. the soup was outstanding though a bit oily and the salad was nothing special in terms of flavors and quality though it did have quite a variety of vegetables. For brunch the next morning i had a sandwich which was overly dressed in veganaise. I was impressed that in the middle of nowhere Virginia there was a cute and warm little coop of a restaurant that drew such a crowd with delicious comfort food that was predominantly vegan; however, it was NOT the healthiest vegan food; but it sure was delicious, and judging by the line to get a table, its a place where the locals come back for more, and more, and more, and more.... they are famous for the mac and cheez, their fries and their breakfast pancakes. they are cash or check only, no credit cards. service is good. it is a coop so the waiters are part owners of the restaurant. There is a small stage where they sometimes host open mics or events.

Love this place and go here whenever we're in town or passing through! Today had the local free-range chicken burrito (quite hefty with lots of fixings on the side!) for 9.95 and the fresh made from scratch Ginger Lemonade (YUM!) and hubby had the free-range chicken bbq sandwich with fresh handcut french fries (delish!) for 9.00. They also had a special for a bowl of the veggie chili and small quesadilla for 5.50. Reasonable, healthy and DELICIOUS and love supporting and eating local!!

Adorable little restaurant in an unassuming location. I have some sort of obsession with eating at new vegetarian restaurants and get really excited when I find great places in towns where I don't expect much. Me and a friend were just passing through and since I'm vegan I always have to plan out where I'm eating before I go anywhere. This is why I'm such a fan of Yelp. Anyway, this place is so adorable I can't even stand it. Such a cute little quaint space in a hick town. I loved everything about it. The staff, the food, and even the fact that it's cash only. I felt like I took a step back to a simpler time. I ordered a falafel wrap accompanied by a healthy sized 'side' salad. Finding places like this is a bit bittersweet since I have no idea when and if I'll ever make it back again.

Everything I've ever had here was amazing. The "burger" is delicious. The blue monkey pancakes - also delicious. The nachos! Oh god the nachos. There isn't a bad thing on this menu. I graduated in 2009 from JMU and I still dream of this place with its adorable decor and trivia cards answers that I'll never know cuz I'm not old enough. I'm planning and H-Burg food trip soon and this place is first on the list. I MISS YOU, LITTLE GRILL!!

This place was really cool. I was served a wonderful, five star salad and I had lots of neat things to look at inside. Ate one plate of "all you can eat" tacos and asked for no more.

This weekend, we traveled to Harrisonburg from Greensboro, NC. We were looking for somewhere to grab a quick lunch before an afternoon commitment. We checked Yelp and were delighted to find great reviews of The Little Grill Collective. We chose to sit in a booth at the back and started to peruse our menus. Our server told us about the lunch special-a tempeh taco bowl that included cabbage, cheese, and avocado. We settled on that and a chicken burrito. Both were excellent! We started cooking with tempeh just recently, so this was a great treat and a preparation we will try at home. The salad was served with a not too sweet mango dressing which was a perfect compliment. The chicken burrito was well-filled with dark meat chicken (we think the menu said locally raised), black beans, sour cream, salsa, and guacamole. It was served with a fried tortilla that was filled with potatoes (a tasty accompaniment) and Spanish rice. We enjoyed lunch so much, that we came back for breakfast the next morning. As much as we enjoyed lunch, the breakfast was the real winner. We were tempted by the massive fluffy pancakes we saw coming from the kitchen, but ultimately settled on two savory breakfasts. The Bricker's Son is two toads in a holes. If you don't know what a toad in a hole is, it's a piece of bread that has had the middle removed and has an egg fried into it. They topped those with their vegetarian chili and cheese and serve it with their "spicy" potatoes. The potatoes were sprinkled with a Cajun seasoning that added flavor without being too salty or hot. They actually needed a little salt and pepper to be perfect. The other breakfast we ordered was a sausage, egg, and cheese bagel. The sausage was billed as local and was a little overcooked, but had an otherwise good flavor. We got plain potatoes with the sandwich. After a few shakes of salt and pepper, they were great! The service was about average, definitely better during breakfast when they were busier. We were able to sit immediately upon our arrival for lunch, but had to wait about 15 minutes for breakfast. We were really delighted to find The Little Grill Collective and will return there if our travels ever bring us back to Harrisonburg.

My fiance J and I love our Saturday morning breakfasts out so I was so excited to try this place. Most of the reviews are so positive and the fact that it's a collective is something I'd always want to support. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted and seated promptly. All the furniture and ambiance feels circa 1960 and we enjoyed looking at all the chachkies on the shelves next to us. I ordered a small stack of the chai pancakes (the November special) and grits and J ordered blueberry/banana pancakes, 1 egg, and bacon. Unfortunately, I wish I could say my breakfast was great. My pancakes were cold and hard (yes, hard) and J's egg and bacon were cold as well. The grits were meh; I put butter on them to make them more edible. The only highlight were J's pancakes, which were warm and yummy. I realize that since it's a small business and they may be understaffed, but it was disappointing walking out after eating a cold breakfast. One another note, they only take cash or check. We won't be coming back--it may be too "granola-y" for us urbanites anyways.

Perfect! Exactly what we were looking for as a lunch stop. On way to DC and needed lunch. Hummus was excellent with pita and fresh veggies. Alice burrito was stuffed with veggies - perfect amount. Wish this restaurant was located in Asheville!

Pretty awesome and definitely unique. This is the place I like to bring out-of-towners. Not that it is representative of Harrisonburg. No, its a little hippy oasis in a sea of generic-ness. Breakfast is my favorite. The blue monkey pancake rocks, as do some of the pancakes of the month (spiced sweet potato - mmmm). Thursday is breakfast for dinner, so you can experience these gut-busters in the evening, too. Service can be spotty, but - whatever - everyone is friends at the Little Grill. Being there makes me chill out. I hope they put wine on their menu one of these days!

  • Kimberly K.

Absolutely love this place! It is THE ONLY breakfast place in harrisonburg that isn't greasy and fast food/chain restaurant. My favorites are Beth's Favorite, Potato Boat, Pancakes, Omlettes... EVERYTHING IS GOOD depending on what you like! Only reason it isn't a 5 is that it is kinda dirty, but in that delicious hippy kinda way.

Feed and clothe yourself at The Little Grill Collective -- but bring cash. At first glance the place looks a little bit like a dive, but its charm and the pride of the staff quickly make you feel at home. You can tell that the staff are invested in making sure you enjoy your experience there, in fact my server even did the artwork for the menu and was as enthusiastic about the place as the woman who greeted me when I first arrived. The breakfast menu had mainly vegetarian and vegan fare. There were lots of interesting and moderately priced choices, but I was happy I decided on the Bricker's (2 toad-in-a-holes with vegi chili and home fried potatoes) -- it was excellent and filling. The ginger lemonade was refreshing and not overly sweet. The tables are set close together so it is cozy fit, plus there is no place to wait for a table inside without being in the way. Be sure to call ahead as it appeared that they don't offer dinner but for a few nights a week. Oh, and as for clothing, local artists designed several fun t-shirts which are available for purchase.

A great place for breakfast, with great energy from the staff. Sometimes busy enough to make a slight wait for a table, however always greeted with a smile and delicious wake up food. I am stuck on the Toads in a Hole, and their poppyseed pancake special this month was delicious. If you downhome vibes and great diner cooking, heres the place to be. note: the only day they serve breakfast into the afternoon seems to be Sunday I think

The Little Grill is a Harrisonburg original. It's relaxed, fun and the food is a mix of vegetarian and just good home cooking. The mushroom gravy is incredible and some of the best fries made. You have to go here. It's the grill !

3 for food, 0.5 for coolness. Awesome to find a vegetarian place out in nowhere. They have great ginger lemonade.

This place definitely has the aura of being run by college students, but it has a good array of vegetarian/vegan entrees and a nice breakfast menu. I want to like it more than I do -- for some reason more than half the things on the menu never sound good to me. That said, there are some tasty items and I have no doubt this place makes Harrisonburg a little better.

Though I have moved away, The Little Grill Collective carries the title of one of my favorite restaurants ever. The food is EXCELLENT. No, not gourmet cooking, but still deserving of FIVE STARS. This is the kind of place you take your friends to throughout college and at sunday brunch before graduation, you point out all the food they have ever eaten here is vegetarian and they become vegetarians for life. I didn't know there could be such a thing as vegetarian comfort food until I started frequenting this place. You can really leave here with some food that will stick to your bones for a very reasonable price. The people here are very active in the community and definitely making a difference on the north side of downtown.

One of the coolest, most easy-going places you'll ever enter. Friendly staff that makes sure to keep your glass from getting empty. The food rocks (especially breakfast) and Tuesday nights they have all-you-can-eat Mexican food night which is ridiculously awesome. Their beer list is mostly made up of craft breweries and they are seriously cheap when compared to other restaurants. The menu leans toward vegetarian but, speaking primarily as a carnivore, you won't notice the difference and they still have a burger and a couple chicken items to choose. Overall a great find and a great bargain! The only drawback is that they don't take credit/debit. Bring cash or a checkbook!

  • Jeremy A.

Some nights are better than others for service and food quality, but the prices are reasonable and I like the hippie ambiance, fueled by the knowledge that the workers are also part owners.

Little Grill Collective is a magical place. Being a collective, everyone there has a stake in its success. Though steak is probably not a word I should throw around this description, as this place is VERY veg-friendly. They do serve meat if that's your fancy, but you might as well try out the Love burger while you are there. I go here for breakfast/brunch only. So I can actually only speak for their daytime meals. But the omelette's are fluffy, i love the chili and cheese one. The chili is really delish. And the pancakes are awesome. Blue-monkeys or apple cinnamon, you can't go wrong. Even their huevos rancheros are awesome. To look around while you eat, you might think you were dining in a thriftshop. There are odd trinkets littering the walls and shelves and your table comes with its own mix packs of trivial pursuit cards if you are feeling sharp. I have never wanted for coffee here. On a sunday morning, you can gauge my mood on how full my coffee cup is at any given moment. At little grill, I am always satisfied. The staff in general is wonderful. If ever they lack in speed, they compensate with charm. I especially love that you get quite a diverse crowd into Little Grill at any given brunch. A mix of preppy college students, locals, hippies, families after church. It's a beautiful thing.

Really like this place. Food was tasty. Portions are on the big side. Anyone complaining about price just doesn't get the slim margins places like this operate by. So stop eating at IHOP, grow a pair and *splurge* the extra dollar for some real food

Unfortunately, i had a bad experience here. I wanted to love it! My friend that took me loves it! She said the server we got was new, but that's not what made the experience suck...the food. I was happy to read on the menu that you could sub vegan cheese for free (that doesn't even happen here in portland!). We got there and no one acknowledged us...after watching some guy clean tables right next to us and not say anything (we even had a $1 tip and a dirty glass still on our table), my friend got up and asked for menus. We had to ask for water, twice. I ordered a Tempeh Reuben and paid $1.50 extra for fries. I was surprised when the food came out only minutes after ordering. But there was a reason for that, the fries were barely cooked, the toasted bread on my sandwich wasn't toasted. it was soggy with margarine. ugh....i didn't even eat my fries. most of my food was left on my plate and the server didn't ask about it when he bussed the table. my friend had ordered her food without sour cream, but it still was in it. it was just sad. i love the hippie, laid back type of places, but it was just a bad experience. thank goodness my friend says she never has had this happen before. they have a comment section on the back of their receipt, so i let them know what i thought. i tried to be nice, but seriously......and i just can't return stuff to the kitchen, i would feel like a bitch.... Prices were good. If the food was cooked.

I like what this place is all about. Not the greatest food, but their vibe is good and the food fresh. Everythingt is on the more so-so side...my friend has the hamburger and i had the veggie chili, but great for harrisonburg. really a treehuggerish place.

Ah, The Grill. Been coming here 20+ years, and there's no other place like it.

  • Yum E.

How cute is this place? On one hand, you really need to have a laid-back attitude due to it's cramped dining space and "free-for-all" sitting and service, but on the other hand, the food (I vouch for breakfast only, I've not had anything else) is pretty good and priced fairly reasonably. It's a neat little, "one-off" kind of restaurant, so if you're into that, check it out. Otherwise, don't go and complain :)

Excellent food and very nice service! The "gravy" was my favorite.

What can I say, this place has been a fixture of my Harrisonburg experience for the past 6 years. All you can eat Mexican on Tuesday, amazing specials prepared by the chef on Wednesdays, Breakfast for dinner on Thursdays, and some of the best local and regional touring acts playing there all the time, especially Friday nights. Favorite breakfast item: Brickers Son. Over easy eggs cooked in toast, smothered in veggie chili and topped with a generous helping of cheese. Oh and lets throw some spicy potatoes on the side of that. Oh and lets only charge you around 6 bucks for that. WHAT!!??!? Favorite lunch/dinner item: Go Ask Alice. Warm, gooey, delicious falafel wrap with a excellent side salad served with homemade tahini dressing. WHOOP! It is cash/check only but considering that they are able to charge less because of that I'd pay in gold doubloons if i had to. Thank you Little Grill!

Mexi night, breakfast night, everything is delicious here. It's what I miss the MOST about Harrisonburg!

Nice place. Reminds me of a place called Spiral Diner (in Fort Worth of all places) and a few places in Austin. I've lived in San Francisco for a few years now so I'm familiar with vegetarian and vegan foods. This restaurant is a little different since it does serve non-vegetarian food as well, including bacon (which I didn't get). The tofu scramble was nice, with a good sauce that reminded me of a mild curry. Coffee was medium strength, pancakes looked wonderful, potatoes were yummy, with a tasty sauce that I couldn't quite place, and the sun-dried tomato bagel was scrumptious. I'd avoid the "soysage" as it looked like a nicely pan-fried sausage patty but the texture was more like pate, very squishy instead of firm. Maybe they could prepare this some other way that would be more palatable. The decor is fun and quirky, the service is reasonably good, the workers look pretty happy and are very friendly, and there are lots of hungry college kids having a fun time here. Overall I'd say Harrisonburg scores a win with the Little Grill!

I wish the Little Grill would just follow me wherever I went. The food is all locally grown and organic and absolutely delicious. Anytime anyone visited me at JMU, I took them to the LG. The owners (i.e., everyone who works there, as it is a collective) are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. On Mondays they serve the purpose of a soup kitchen, which is just fantastic (and just proves my point about how awesome the owners are). Note: cash only!

  • Jethro T.

You cannot separate the food from the atmosphere. The Little Grill is a total experience. I've heard out-of-town friends (infrequently) complain about the food but I love their creative, rough-around-the-edges breakfast dishes. I like grabbing the box of Trivial Pursuit cards floating around and quizzing my friends while digging into the Potato Boat or the Bricker's Son (my two favorite brunch dishes) and the homemade biscuits. The experience of eating here is heightened, in my opinion, by the knowledge that all the workers own a stake in the restaurant. Plus, most if not all of the menu options are vegan, and contain locally grown and sold ingredients. Those eggs and potatoes come from a farm not 10 miles from the restaurant. Last time I was there I had the unfortunate experience of getting a bad cup of coffee and mentioning it to the waitress, who refilled my cup from the same bad pot. That's why I'm only giving it 4 stars.

We ate breakfast here on a Sunday morning. There was a line to get in, but it moved quick. We didn't mind the wait since it was just nice to sit outside on their bench in the sun. The food was terrific. I had the Beth's scramble, while my friend ordered the tofu scramble. Both were great, especially the Beth's scramble. We also ordered a short stack of the orange flaxseed pancakes, which was great too. Topped it off with some coffee. In summary, memorable breakfast in Harrisonburg for the two of us.

  • D A.

I like this place for what it is, not what it is not. It is: earnest, honest food in a humble atmosphere. For what it is and why someone might value it, see the other five-star ratings. My wife and I drive two hours from Fairfax for this place; there's nothing in the styrofoam suburbs like it. Granted, we're Portlanders and a visit to the Little Grill is like a trip home, but with better gravy. For what it is not, check out the negative reviews of this place and consider what they find lacking in the Little Grill. It isn't that. And some of us like it that way.

    (5)
  • Joe G.

Superb, simply superb! Our waitress was wonderful the selection was fantastic and our food was even better. I had the tempeh ruben that was was even better than a normal ruben with corned beef my girlfriend had the hungry mother bowl which is beyond words delicious and we split a plate of nachos which again couldn't have tasted better. This place was an excellent find for lunch.

I think I'm still full from my brunch yesterday at 11 am. Wow. This meal was truly an experience. Having gone to school for four years right next to Little Grille, and having never gone once, I felt like part of my soul was missing. I was right. I wish I could rewind time and go every weekend while in college. The food is GREAT. I love that you know that everything is local and you can see where it comes from. Humanely raised chickens and other meat also makes me very happy. I got the whole wheat blue monkey short stack of pancakes- delicious. Others in my group raved about their omelettes and breakfast meals. Everyone seemed to enjoy their fair trade coffee too. The environment is child of woodstock meets farmer meets college kid meets whatever- it's a really mixed feel but it's a great time. Expect to be practically in two conversations at once- your tables and the table next to you (maybe more if you're in a really small spot). But everyone there is friendly so dont worry. Prices are great. Everything is great. Only minor downfall (still worth five stars) is their cash only policy. It's understandable because they want to stay local and grass roots-ish, but it's a #firstworldproblem for the rest of us. So just remember that before going.

This place is amazing. Worker owners, locally sourced (even the maple syrup), TONS of vegan options! Why is this place not in Ohio where I can enjoy it more often? I have never been at a place outside of the west coast or New York where I could ask for a side of nooch and actually get it. The food was solid, tasty and filing. The service was incredibly cool and on point. Happy tummy, happy heart and on my way back to Ohio.

Came here for breakfast with my niece and sister-in-law. Such a cute place and we all enjoyed the food and friendly service. I had the Western omelet, which was very tasty. My sister-in-law loved the French toast and is eager to bring my brother to try it. And my niece very much enjoyed her pancake! Will definitely be back next time I'm in town!

  • Jodie G.

I love the atmosphere! The great thing about the cooperative and organic model is how much you know where the food is coming from. The staff is friendly and tend to be community members so it's possible they've seen you around, if you're local. The house coffee is my favorite and I add 2 spoons of sugar and no milk (that's how good it is). I hear the potatoes are delicious but I haven't had those yet. Pancakes and French toast are my favorite. I look forward to trying potatoes next time. They are usually extremely busy, GO EARLY! If it isn't packed and you walk in try to make eye contact with a server, it was this way once and took a while for someone to serve me. P.S CASH ONLY, or CHECKS!

Wonderful servers and the breakfast is to die for, especially the specialty pancakes. I also recommend the Portobello sandwich, which is one of the best ive ever had. Some of the lunch offerings and sides, though, are blandsville. Guess they want you to season it yourself.

WOW. Really the only way to describe my feelings about The Little Grill Collective. I am not a vegetarian, but I appreciate good vegetarian options and boy did this place deliver! Not to worry, if you need meat in your diet, they have that too. This place is really a hidden gem in Harrisonburg. As most the other reviews mention, it is very hippie, but in a great way. The staff is super friendly and the place has a really cool story. The food is fresh and healthy and I was extremely satisfied by the time I walked out the door. I was torn on what to order, but ended up going with the special of the day which was a soba noodle bowl with broccoli, beets, carrots, tofu, and some wonderful peanut sauce that tasted as if it came straight from the heavens. Definitely can't wait to get back here and try out their other options.

It's rare to find a restaurant where I enjoy coming back three days in a row. It makes me sad that they will stop serving dinner starting on June 30th, but such is life. All of their food is made from scratch from quality ingredients, and that results in a superior flavor and texture. And the fact that most items are under $9, makes this place a steal. Their falafel is some of the best that I've tried outside the middle east, the mashed potatoes are divine, the cheddar jalapeño cornbread melted in my mouth, and even the rice and beans in the Mexican plate tasted a step above the rest, and the potato boat could easily be my daily breakfast, possibly with a poached egg on top. If you enjoy home cooked meals made from quality ingredients, you will love it here.

Came here for brunch on a busy Saturday morning in July. It's a down home mom-n-pop atmosphere with a a dozen or so tables/booths. Menu is a variety of brunch classics with lots of GF/Vegan/Vegetarian options. We had the huevos rancheros and local eggs/meat/side and everything was simple yet delicious. Love that it's a worker-owned and operated coop. Simple, quality food at affordable prices. We would DEFINITELY come back!

My daughter and I had breakfast here when we visited JMU. I kind of hope she goes there so we can eat here more often! The food was fresh and delicious. I had a veggie omelet which was excellent and she had the blueberry monkey pancakes. The servings were huge but more importantly, really good. Don't be put off by the outside. You won't be disappointed.

We come here to eat whenever we are in town. The menu is small and perfect. Pick up a few souvenirs while you are here. There aren't a lot of places like this left.

Fun funky atmosphere. Really friendly staff. And wonderful fresh food choices. Traveling often for work, I love finding places like this with fresh, local, homemade dishes. A great selection of options to choose from. I'm not vegetarian, but only eat meat if it's antibiotic free and only eat bread if it's fresh made. This places satisfies both! Had a super yummy fresh salad and the chefs special ancho chili soup. The soup was perfect on a cold night and loved it being tipped with fresh avacado. Yum, I will be back!

Great 'hole in the wall'. The staff is extremely accommodating and kind. They help each other run food and clean up tables which is refreshing to see. This is my third time coming for breakfast and the banana walnut pancakes never disappoint. It was a little loud this time but it's understandable seeing that it's a Sunday morning. It's worth checking out if you're in the area and want to support small businesses- you will be happy you did :)

Sometimes you look at the menu too quickly and order something that you think is going to be a full meal and really turns out to be a couple of squares of tofu plus a ton of home fries and that's what happened to me with the tofu scramble BUT it was only $4. My friend really enjoyed the Veggie chili over two toads in a hole though. Very good service and pretty reasonable prices but I honestly think the menu needs some more umph.

Wonderful. Looked on yelp for a place to stop and eat lunch on our way to NC and this place looked good. Absolutely Loved it!! Super fresh and everything homemade. A+.

Go Hippies! The vibe is a bit funky in this little place, but the food is really great. The potato cakes and groovy gravy are pretty darn awesome. The blueberry pancakes kick some serious butt too! Tip: If you get the potato cakes, ask for the gravy on the side so your cakes stay crisp.

The food was superb! Loved the Hungry Mother Bowl and Blue Monkey pancakes- best I've ever had. I would have given 5 stars, except for the waitress. Sadly, she never returned to check on our food or coffee until we were all finished. Also, she never gave me the bill; she just told me what the total was, and I never got a receipt...is this standard procedure? Besides that, it was a great little place with amazing food.

This place is kind of... No, EXTREMELY amazing!!! I have no dietary restrictions fortunately, and have never really ventured into vegan/vegetarian options; however, their dishes are incredible!! I was skeptical about trying vegan options, but those dishes far exceeded my expectations. Not only is the food delicious, but I really appreciate that it's locally sourced. The owners are also pretty fun people! If you're anywhere near here, the Little Grill is a must!!

CASH/CHECK ONLY! Just an FYI because we had to run to an atm. Portabello sandwich, salad, and nachos were all fantastic. Friendly service and good vibes. Great restaurant.

This is probably my favorite place to eat outside my own kitchen. I know that's saying a lot, especially since I don't live in Harrisonburg... or even in the Shenandoah Valley. But every time I visit I'm impressed by the quality of the cuisine and service. The Little Grill serves good food by made by good folks who are dedicated to sourcing their ingredients from local farms and businesses. The extra care and effort does not go unnoticed, especially since the selection of eateries in the area has been increasingly watered down by mediocre to bad chain restaurants catering to the JMU crowd. The interior of the Grill is modest but thoughtful, and recent renovations lend some flair to the dining room (including the addition of handcrafted tables by local artists). It can get pretty crowded for Saturday morning breakfast and during evenings with live music, but not uncomfortable. Between their Mexi, Down Home and monthly pancake specials, the LGC has plenty going on to keep folks coming back. The number of vegan-friendly options on the menu doesn't hurt, either. I recommend: a booth in the back, black coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice, the breakfast burrito (add spinach) and one buttermilk Blue Monkey. The Breakfast Grinder, Bricker's Son and local burger are all excellent as well. Note: Wi-Fi is free now, I think. Also heard that the LGC recently served its first $5 beer, a seasonal stout, but otherwise beer is never more than $3-4.

Eating at the Little Grill is like giving yourself a hug. Seriously. I come here every weekend for breakfast and its one of the highlights of my week. Endless, flowing hot coffee, amazing pancakes and a hippie atmosphere that makes you feel relaxed and at ease. Each month there is a different featured pancake flavor that corresponds to the season. Some of my personal favorites include pumpkin, chai, and double chocolate. Delish! Its quite a popular spot and you can expect to wait awhile, but its worth it. The cajun potatoes and veggie omelettes are great too! Great local, vegetarian, and fair-trade options. What's not to love?

Great find while visiting this beautiful area of Virginia. Enjoyed the ambiance and friendly service. And the Love Omelet was one of the best omelets ever! Well worth the brief wait (and appreciate the text notification when table ready)

I forget the name of the dish, but it was the Toads in a hole covered with chili and cheese and a side of potatoes...MMMM! The kids got french toast and orange juice and ate until they were full. Perhaps the fourth star comes from the fact that this place is primarily vegatarian/vegan dishes, but not sanctimonious so as to leave us primitive carnivores without options. The sausage that the kids ordered was local sourced and excellent, the service was great. I missed the sign on the door, but next time I will have cash before I receive the bill.

So good! Vegan gravy and biscuits were divine, and the shared eggs, potato cake and biscuits, and Blueberry Banana pancakes (high, fluffy. And pretty darn light considering the blueberry & banana load!) would have been the perfect amount if we'd gotten the short stack! prices are quite reasonable. Coffee was good (and I say that rarely!) Service was casual, good humored, adorable and good. Atmosphere charming. Can I say, Damn I miss hippies!!! I would eat here every week, without question

Very good neighborhood gem. Cozy little Vegan friendly organic spot. The food and the service were both good. Def. the best breakfast spot in town! It can get pretty busy so make sure you arrive early, especially if you have a larger party.

Got brunch here on New Year's Day and can't think of a better way to have started my year!! Yes they can be crowded but it's worth the wait. I got a blue monkey pancake and a Greek omelette. So delicious! Best breakfast in harrisonburg by FAR!

This is the place for breakfast in Harrisonburg. Hippie atmosphere is interesting. They open at 9 AM on Sundays so get there early. The place fills up pretty quickly. I had the blue monkey pancakes, blueberry and banana. They were wonderful. Local sausage as a great flavor too. The eggs are range fed and natural. So good. Service was excellent and prices good too. An exquisite find in Harrisonburg.

This restaurant compelled me to write my first ever review. Here it goes: I've been on a 5 week cross country bus tour, from CA to DC, and I eat out for every meal. This is by far the best breakfast I have had along the way. I got the breakfast grinder, and it was probs top 10 sandwich I have ever had. It ranks somewhere between momma's and a authentic philly cheese steak. Oh btw, this place is very reasonably priced: all meals under $10. Service was top-notch as well.

Heavenly, sweet little restaurant! We happened upon this gem, and put our name on the list for breakfast...they entered our cell number in their IPad and said we would get a text when our table was ready, between 20-30 minutes. 40 minutes later, our cell went off! After being seated, we ordered coffee (which was delicious) and breakfast. I had the potato boat - a delicious mix of veggies, potatoes and cheese, and my honey ordered blueberry pancakes, eggs and bacon. Everything was incredible! The staff were all very friendly and the restaurant was clean. The only thing I want to mention is bring cash or a check to pay as they don't accept credit or debit cards. There is a sign on the door stating such, but of course we didn't see it! We took a short jaunt to the ATM at 7-11 and returned to pay our bill. An absolute jewel!!!!

What a fun place!!! My boyfriend and I are visiting from out of town and were tickled to find a place like this. I had the French toast made from local sourdough bread and local sausage!! Both were so tasty, well cooked, and obviously locally made. You could taste the difference. I loved the decor on the walls and the whole vibe of the place. Our waitress was friendly, highly efficient and easy to talk to. Prices were great. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants a little hippie, local place to eat instead of some chain restaurant serving frozen food!!

I don't like writing a negative review for places that are vegetarian and vegan friendly, especially locally owned places but I do have a complaint. I came in on a Saturday at 1 pm. It was packed. I sat at the bar and ordered. I waited 40 minutes to get my food. I was starting to get hangry. That's just too long for 1 plate to come out. If the kitchen is slow, you should let patrons know what to expect and give them something like bread or a snack to tide them over. Also, while sitting at the bar, I noticed a server scoop the ice with an ice scoop and put the scoop back into the ice chest. That's a restaurant no-no, because germs from the handles can contaminate the ice and pass along illness to patrons. You should leave the scoop outside the ice chest. I do have positive feedback to balance out the negative. They had lots of veg and vegan options. Service was friendly. The food was good.

I had their peanut butter pancakes, which were this week's special item. Asking the waitress to add bananas and chocolate chips was the most delicious decision I've made since the new year. Delicious, fun, inexpensive.

Having worked for Rockingham County for a while, Little Grill was always a convenient after-work place to make a stop. As a meat lover, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed their Mexi-Night all-you-can-eat meat-less tacos. I highly recommend stopping in on a Tuesday night for a plate at Mexi-Night. I will say that the only thing I don't particularly care for is that it does seem a little dirty at times, with all of the random toys and stuff laying around, just collecting dust. But overall, this is a great place.

We were on our way to and from local wineries and desperately needed quality food to soak up all of the wines we consumed. We drove past The Little Grill Collective and the name caught the Drivers eye. Grill house? Tons of pork? EEEEHHHHHNNNGGG! This is a vegan friendly diner-esque joint. Hubby ordered a chicken burrito which came with a side of mashpotato wrapped in a crispy tortilla shell with rice an a few bites of salad. I went the vegan route and ordered the lunch special- bbq tofu, corn bread with collard greens. Best lunch decision ever. It was healthy, only remotely so, but the meal was packed with flavor and easy on the wallet. Vacation win! Another fun piece of trivia about LGC is that they are employee owned. Not entirely sure what that means, but I have an inkling it means they are their own bosses and take accountability for the food they serve. No credit cards. Bring cash. Friendly crowd. Good service.

I love the Little Grill. I crave them most on Mondays....when they aren't open. It's the chic-fil-a phenomenon. The service is so sweet and kind. The coffee is AMAZING and fair trade and free refills just like IHOP. Some of my menu favorites are: Toad in a hole which is buttered toast with a fried egg in the middle, the vegetable omelet with spicy potatoes and surprisingly the biscuits and groovy gravy. I love their daily and monthly specials. Their peanut butter pancakes were sooooooo delicious. They have something on their menu for everyone including vegans, carnivores, lactose intolerant, gluten free, or any combo. Oh yeah, cash or check only. Tell your friends before you go so it isn't awkward. However, they're really nice about it if you didn't know they would let you leave your license to go get cash.

Busy eclectic venue close to or in the rougher part of town. Chose it because of the wide choice of vegetarian breakfast options. Glad we did. Excellent tofu grinder. Also recommend the ginger lemonade. Kids really liked their pancakes and my spouse enjoyed her omelette. Finally, wait staff were all competent and friendly. However be prepared to wait. Place is busy, so took 20 minutes to get seated and another twenty minutes for the food to show. IMHO it's worth the wait.

What an amazing little find. It's off the beaten path in Harrisonburg, but DO NOT pass it up if you happen to be driving by on I-81! It looks a little dingy from the outside, but don't let it fool you -- The Little Grill Collective is quite a find. Sustainable, local food at this worker-owned restaurant comes in many delicious options. I personally had the Bricker's Son, which is two toads in a hole (eggs in a basket, one-eyed sailors, whatever you happen to call them), covered with veggie chili and cheese, accompanied by spicy fried potatoes. Although the chili could've used a little more zing, it was still quite flavorful, and the meal overall was savory, satisfying and filling without being too heavy. I ordered hot tea and was surprised to be greeted with a little box full of several high-quality options. But, that tea was never refilled. I never got an offer for any refills, and we actually never saw our server again after the food came out -- until we got up to the register that he was now struggling to figure out how to use. It was a little disappointing also that we arrived after 12:30 in the afternoon, but the breakfast menu was the only option we were given. The lunch menu and the appeal of falafel was actually what had brought us in from the Internet. The inside is very small, very cramped and very loud. And the staff couldn't even figure out how to get the receipt paper in the cash register (BTW, no cards accepted here!), so I was left standing there for quite a few minutes while they figured out the meaning of life. All in all, this seems like one of best hidden gems I have ever tried in my dining experiences. I hope I can happen to arrive when one of the other menus is available as an option sometime, and I will definitely come back. There's so much good going on here, but there is definitely room for improvement on some small parts. And all this deliciousness was under $20 for two.

Holy cow! We stumbled upon this place while looking for IHOP. It looks a little "iffy" from the outside, but we went in anyway even though I had to go find an ATM and get some cash first. It turned out to be a great choice. The inside has an earthy vibe. Those used only to the antiseptic interiors of some chain restaurants might even call it a bit bit grubby. I prefer to say it has a sort of anti-establishment charm. Anyway, it was fun and quirky. The service was quick, attentive but not overbearing, and friendly. The food...well, the food was worth the wait and the inconvenience. I had the Greek omelet which was very tasty. The pumpkin pancakes were, however, nothing short of scrumptious. Loved it all. We'll be back next time we're in the area!

One of the better places to eat in all of Harrisonburg, especially if you're health conscious and prefer organic and local ingredients. Don't be put off by the appearance either--the rundown look has become a part of the restaurant's motif, and it's appreciated by people who understand the difference between dirty and worn. There are two issues you'll run into at this place: parking and seating. The Little Grill Collective only has street parking, but you can park in the automotive shop's lot if it is outside of the shop's business hours. Seating can be an issue sometimes too, since this place is pretty popular and can get crowded, especially on the weekends. If you are there when it's crowded, it could take a while to get your meal. The food itself is great. There are many vegan and vegetarian options, but even the meat options are things like grass-fed burgers and free range chicken. A lot of care is put into the ingredients, and it shows in the taste. The menu is an eclectic mix of American, Mexican, Greek, and various vegetarian items. You can't go wrong with any of the Mexican options. The vegetarian been burger is made from scratch and quite good (although the patty is gigantic and needs a bit more sauce). Even the soda that they serve is all natural.

Breakfast here is SO delicious. My favorite breakfast in the whole world: The Breakfast Grinder. It has love burger, scrambled egg, muenster, and cream cheese on a really soft, delicious sub roll. Every ingredient is of the utmost quality. (Love burger is veggie meat, but it is AWESOME, I am sure even carnivores would like it.) Huevos Rancheros are also awesome. And the pancakes. The bacon is good too. I haven't visited much on the weekend when they are more busy, but the service has always been very good to me. Except when I got a look for trying to order coke. Only complaint--the place is a little dirty, all the knick-knacks collecting dust and all. It also has occasionally seemed almost a little too in my face, like "I'm the little grill and I'm a hippie collective, I make everything fresh local and am better for the environment, and I will laugh at you if you try to order some diet coke." But on the other hand I also like that about it. I'm glad it's what it is. I can go to a bowl of good when I'm in the mood for something cleaner that serves local food, but it can't fill the place in my heart The Little Grill does with its awesome fried delicious breakfast items. Trivial pursuit on the tables is nice too. Sometimes its nice not to have to think so much about conversing while waiting for food and just playing a nice game.

I went in here with my mother on Saturday afternoon. We were told the wait was about 20 minutes. There were 3 empty tables (and the place is really small so that's a fair amount of them), they said they were changing over or something staffwise, but I've worked in restaurants before and I understand sometimes you're short staffed or whatever. Fine. But then we are waiting by the door (there is no where to sit to wait in this restaurant, it is very crowded and small, but that's it's a feel and it's thing so, again, fine.), and we are told we can't stand there because it is a fire hazard. Okay. We ask if we can sit at one of the empty tables to wait, because it is raining, about 40 degrees and windy outside. Nope, we are told we can't. So I asked them explicitly, just to make sure we were on the same page: "So we can't sit at the tables you are clearly not using because you said you were on a staff changeover, and you want us to stand outside in the rain and cold for twenty minutes?" The answer was clearly yes, so we said "Well that's ridiculous." and left. I mean, do they just not want customers? I was perplexed. So dismissive and stuck up ...I tried to eat local, let it be known. But when no one is willing to help you out even a little bit, it gets tricky. Would not recommend.

Cute place. Their vegetarian gravy is as good as my own homemade. Vegan pancakes had good flavor but a touch dry. Their coffee was good black, and they have a nice tea assortment. Hubby says the tofu scramble was good. Good place. I've had better, and I've had worse, but I would certainly give it another try. It's pretty basic.

Delicious blue monkey pancakes but the service was poor. Never got coffee refills or asked how everything was... so that was disappointing. Based on the food, they'd get a 4. Service was a 2. Therefore my overall rating is 3.

Oh we just love it here. Vegan and vegetarian food is fresh and sooooo good. Service is sweet and friendly and no plastic smiles. Really great, vegetarian and/or local grown food, for cheap prices. We had Ron's Mexi-plate with taco, rice and salad and it was just brilliant. Also, we got the black beans burger (that day's special) and it was excellent. Fresh made iced tea (free refills!) and a huge chocolate-chips-banana-oatmeal cookie. Everything was just to our liking, including the mishmash decor and the menu which included tax on every price. Wish we could eat here every day.

Not a go-to breakfast spot for me. Pancakes a little tough, stingy serving of maple syrup, it's amazing how the lack of good Customer Service skills can make or break an establishment. My server broke it. Popular place, chalk it up as me coming from a big food City.

What's NOT to love about this place?! I love everything they are about: worker owned & they do as many sustainable things as possible (local food, fair trade coffee, even their coffee mugs came from a thrift store!). Everyone else pretty much said it all, the staff is friendly but not overly friendly/fake, amazing food. What I like the most is they have food for omnivores (my husband), vegetarians (me) and vegans. I absolutely hate faking my way through a primarily meat-based menu to come up with something to eat. We came here twice on our recent trip to Harrisonburg (and once before in 2010). My husband & I got the all you can eat Mexi night (Tuesdays!) for $8. Super affordable, and amazing - everything is authentic and vegetarian. My parents who are not usually appreciative of this type of eclectic/local food were complaining that a burger was $10 (um, hi mom & dad - TGI Fridays, where they usually go, has a $10 burger too, but the quality is crappy there?!). In all reality, everything on the menu is affordable. My parents are just crazy. This morning we went for breakfast... I got the vegan pumpkin pancakes. They were so unbelievably moist. $17 for 2 coffees (bottomless!), pancakes and an omelette. On our drive away from the Little Grill, we both wished that there was something like this in RI. A few places come close.. but don't hit the mark 100%. Until next time...

We just came down to Harrisonburg from a weekend camping, and wanted a filling breakfast before our long drive back to Pennsylvania. I got the French toast, and it was the best I have ever eaten! Seriously! Locally made cinnamon sourdough bread? Yes please. The staff was lovely, the service was quick, and the food was perfect. Yum!

When we find ourselves doing a 7 hour drive south to visit family this is our lunch stop enroute. The food is great, people are friendly, and they have good veg options. I think they are affiliated with the food co-op up the way, which is also awesome. Definitely worth getting off the highway, and easy to find if you do.

Wonderful space, fantastic pancakes, and the best vegan biscuits and gravy I have ever had. For years I lived in another state and would try to recreate them at home, to no avail. Now whenever I'm in the area for the Green Vally Book Fair I come to Harrisonburg to revisit the Little Grill. They also have a great blog! Long live Vegan Black Metal Chef.

Quite a few vegan and vegetarian choices. The falafel burrito was very good. They offer a nice selection of beers and highlight those produced by independent brewers. Our waitress was extremely friendly and helpful. Prices seem good. We shared a delicious homemade oatmeal cookie for dessert. Yum. Remember to bring cash. Credit cards are not accepted. I will eat here again if I am ever again in Harrisonburg and wish to have a casual breakfast, lunch or dinner. (The upcoming pancake special sounds very creative and interesting--something like orange flax pancakes.)

Gonzo? Check. Postcards from strangers? Check. Kitchy paintings? Check. Open mic nights? Check. Breakfast for dinner? Check. Honestly, what else could you ask for--besides of course an amazing community-feel with tons of heart...and maybe some locally grown ingredients (Don't worry, they have those, too)? This place, to quote a good friend, is 'the heart of Harrisonburg.' Sure it's a little weathered. It's not refined, city dining. That stuff ain't real. Real is handpicked, locally grown strawberry pancakes. Real is down-home cooking on Friday nights, and all you can eat, authentic Mexican food. Real is when the staff bussing & waiting on tables, prepping & cooking food are sometimes partial owners of the place. It's as real and as heartfelt as it gets. Be sure to stop in on a Thursday night-- it's breakfast for dinner night (try the bricker's son, the apple cinnamon pancakes or their homemade mushroom gravy)-- open mic starts at 8:30 and the talent that shows up is always super entertaining. CASH ONLY! And make sure you save a couple bucks to grab a vegan cookie on the way out-- it'll make a believer out of any non-vegans. They are heavenly-- as is the entire place. I heart the LGC!

This food doesn't really taste like much. If you're used to really bland health food and granola then this may be your treat. But I go out to eat to get food that tastes great. Nobody is going to live forever, so I'm not going to suffer through vegan/veg/whole grain/organic if there's no reason to... Not good for desert, unless you're comfortable with finding vegetable fibers in your cookies.

Sometimes I wish I still lived in Virginia solely for The Little Grill! It's a collective, which means everyone who works there owns a little piece of it. I have so many fond memories of going there, sometimes a bit hungover, for brunch and stuffing my face with their tofu scrambler and vegan blueberry flaxjacks! ...Oh and the gigantic vegan oatmeal chocolate chip cookies you keep eyeing at the counter are WORTH it. So delicious. I would always grab one to-go and eat it a mere hour later in the car. Dinner there is wonderful as well. There's a different theme each night and they have live music sometimes as well. I love their "something for everyone" attitude and the artsy atmosphere. You're guaranteed to enjoy your time there!

It's a must-go for Sunday brunch! The buckwheat pancakes are delicious, and paired with maple bacon and eggs makes it perfect! Their falafels are also worth eating for lunch. A definite must to eat here if you're in H'burg! They do not accept credit cards! CASH ONLY

Good breakfast! Very crowded. Get the pancakes or veggie boat or local sausage and you will not be disappointed. My kids beg to come here just for the French toast (and it is so good). Local food and employees owned. Definitely a diner or hole in the wall feel (my family wouldn't want it any other way).

One of my favorite restaurants in the country! I travel for work and pass by the Grill on 81 a few times a month. I try to hit the grill whenever it's open! Great food. Lots of organic, local and veggie options. Love the theme nights! Only downside is that their hours are a bit sporadic due to their collective nature.

This place has great character, great food (with a veggie majority of options), excellent service and a (good kinda) funk that made it all come together. This place is excellent if you are on a road trip down 81 and want to stop for food. If you leave from DC at 7 AM, you'll be there before 10 AM and they will be there with a smile and a biscuit.

  • Peppermint L.

I pretty much had the worst dining experience here in my life. First of all, the place is completely filthy and it has dust everywhere and it's always crramped. Since the place is so cramped, all the sounds just kind of echo off the walls and it's very loud. The first time (and only) time I went there, they brought us these cups that had...stuff on them. Inside and outside. Not sure what is was but it looked gross. My friend agreed that the food just tasted...weird. Something off...not right. All I ordered was pancakes and he got a sandwich. Then we saw this huge cockroach crawling under our table. It was really hard not to walk out, but I didn't complain once because I don't like to draw attention to myself or complain. We just paid, gave the waiter a tip, quietly left, and never returned. Don't go here! I would be afraid of getting some kind of disease.

Fun quirky atmosphere with truly happy people that work there. Servers are knowledgeable and friendly, always willing to go the extra mile. I asked if the special double chocolate pancakes could be veganized and was told it was never done before but they were up for the experiment. Mission VERY successful! Even though they recently raised their prices, it is a bargain to eat (and drink) there. Mexican night is not to be missed. Their menu caters to everyone with truly incredible vegan options. It is cash only, although they accept personal checks.

Best brunch in Harrisonburg. Get there early or expect a wait. I tried the special - buckwheat pancakes stuffed with poached pears, drizzled in honey. Heaven. Lots of excellent vegetarian dishes. Service was a bit slow, but the place is so quaint that you're inspired not to rush.
