Service was prompt and the crab cakes were okay. I would eat here again.

It's usually a wait for a table on friday nites, and this was no exception, but the seafood here is terrific, and the servers are just right! Not too overbearing, but they don't forget anything either, we have a few favorites, and bledd thier hearts, they don't disappoint.Tonight the shrip cocktail was fantastic!

The Fried shrimp, Crab cakes, Calamari AND the Big Broccoli Tree w/Hollandaise - Fabulous!!! A must when in Hampton :)

Wow, we had high hopes for decent seafood while in Hampton Va and yelp rated them fairly high. Well, it may sound bad but the raters must think Olive Garden and Red Lobster are good, come to think of it, Red Lobster is tastier. Had the Surf Rider comprised of scallops, shrimp and crab...it all appeared fresh but man was it THE most bland seafood i have ever had. The hushpuppies were dense and flavorless. The highlight of my meal was the chunky applesauce. Seriously, the applesauce. My daughter's chicken fingers were good, as was her coleslaw. Good micro beer selection. Service was efficient but clearly trained to rush diners and flip tables.

Since I had read reviews I was not sure what to expect - Like others said not believe your gps you will find it right on the water . It was literally a million dollar view with fabulous boats , water views and a sunset. Tried the crab dip and yes it was all they said . It was very crowed for a Wednesday Night so noise was a little high but nothing where i could not hear my dinner partner . GET the Big Broccoli with Hollandaise - it was HUGE !! Boiled shrimp where done right ( not rubbery ) and dessert was FABULOUS !!

Went here on a recommendation from another website. We were in town for the Phish shows, so we wanted to find some good seafood that was not going to be packed with hippies and wooks. We found it! Decor here is simple, and location is very nice (though amidst a seemingly resedential area). Staff was VERY friendly and our server was on top of her game (refilling drinks without us even noticing we needed it, etc). We ordered several dishes and ate family-style. Fried clams were delicious--good mix of whole bellied clams and strips. French fries were mediocre. Tartar sauce was standard. Also got fried oysters which were HUGE and fantastic. The crab dip and toast points were TERRIFIC--they are a house specialty which must be tried--and finally the Tuna Bites melted in our mouths (we got the blackened cajun ones). The food was so incredibly good, I would definitely come back here and eat again. A nice, family-friendly restaurant with good prices--Yelpers should be all over this place!

Pretty good. Neat location in a local marina. Fast service and good food.

Dude... Why did I just find this place? My grandparents lived here for 30+ years so needless to say I've spent a lot of time in Hampton. There was never anything beyond Chili's, Olive Garden and Dead Lobster... I mean Red Lobster.... to eat at so we never bothered to eat out unless is was absolutely necessary. We were in town for my grandfather's funeral and asked the funeral home for a recommendation for lunch and this is where they sent us. The plates averaged $20 but the seafood was beautiful!!! Huge oysters, scallops and shrimp and thick cut fresh fish. The portions were appropriate too - you don't get 4 fried oysters you get a heaping pile of thick pillowy fried oysters. I know I'll be back in town to see my family and instead of taking my aunt to the standard one trick ponies in town where you pay $20 for 6 thin obviously previously frozen shrimp, nasty rice and a salad of cheap iceberg lettuce I will be taking her here for a lovely meal!

This place has the best seafood outside of new England. The crab cakes are out of this world. Order the broccoli and you will get a tree. I do not know about there non seafood entrees but why would you bother. The place is off of the beaten path but at a nice marina. The wait can be long but well worth it.

How have I missed trying this place for so long? I had the fried seafood platter last night - flounder, shrimp, scallops, & oysters with two sides. Everything was perfectly cooked and delicious. The she-crab soup was some of the best I have ever eaten. The wife had surf and turf, with a nice steak and shrimp, along with two sides. We arrived about 6:30 and the place was packed. Even so, we only had about a 35 minute wait. Service was fast and efficient, and the staff was all very friendly and accommodating. We have definitely added this place to our list of preferred restaurants

The best scallops that I have ever had. My only complaint is that the place is noisy.

The service in Surf Riders is horrible. My girlfriend and I decided to come here for her b-day since we heard good things about the seafood place. Once we sat the waitress asked us what did we want to drink. She gave our drinks and we asked her to come back in a few minutes. Well a few minutes turned into 15 minutes. From the way the waitress carried herself, I could sense she knew that she forgot about us. I felt like a dead ghost. Then when my girlfriend confronted her the waitress got an attitude and got smart . If she would admit she forgot I would have let that slide. I could see her punching order in the pc with an attitude so, we decide to leave. I told the hotess to cancel our order because the waitress got an attitude The only good thing I can say is the hotess seem concered.. I got 100 percent better service at Red Lobster.

I have eaten here twice in the past few days. I have to say I LOVE the food. What I am not to in love with is that 1. the service isn't the best, and 2. the tea tastes like water. We ate here on a Thursday night, and at around 6 pm it was packed, and so very loud. We were seated on arrival but had to wait for 10 mins til our server came. We got our drinks in 5 minutes but had to wait for another 10 mins until she came back to take our order. On the First night we ate here we had Calamari, The Broiler platter, and fried shrimp. I noticed this night the tea was so watered down it actually tasted like water! So i just added lemon and sugar to have some kind of taste. The calamari was oh so delicious! melt in your mouth and battered to perfection... you could tell the calamari was very fresh. On the broiler platter we had shrimp, fish, scallop and a crab cake. let me tell you the scallops were SOOOOOOOOOO delicious. They melt in your mouth and are oh so good! the fish didn't really have flavor but was cooked to perfection, i just added some lemon and butter to it. The crab cake was mostly crab and very little filler! So delicious. The fried shrimp was very very delicious. My husband who is a very picky eater enjoyed it. The second time we came here was around 4 pm. on a Monday There were about 3 tables filled, but yet we had to still wait for our server. I ordered the she crab soup and scallops, my husband had a BLT and fries, but we also ordered the calamari again. The calamari this time came out double the amount we had on our previous visit. It was delicious! I have been craving these scallops for the past couple of days and my oh my was i NOT let down. they were so good! like butter. it just melts in your mouth! My husband wasn't so happy about the BLT but they are not really known for their sandwiches...They are well known for their seafood, which was ON POINT!

You know I had to return to Surf Rider right? :) This time my friend/date :) ordered the Flounder. When she discovered it was $19.00..she flipped out but she ordered it anyway. But when the food was delivered...it looked like they caught Flipper, fried him up and served him on a platter. That fish was huge, flaky and cooked to perfection! Thumbs Up Surf Rider!

  • Cammie T.

Good for lunch (or brunch)...crabcakes are humongous, barely tasted any fillers. Definitely coming back for more. They could use some decorating and fixing up the place a bit, the ambiance is bleh, even with the water view.

OMG! ill be the fist to say this is a great place to eat some good fresh seafood and enjoy the view. during the summer you can eat outside right on the way while yachts are sailing along the food is very good the menus dont change much, just the catch of the day. they have a full bar and the drinks are good. the girl staff is fast and know there stuff and always smile. get the seafood platter its enough for two. great date spot or mid-day lunch with family and friends.

Came here on a Friday night with some friends and it was super packed. Appetizers: Had the crab dip and calamari. The calamari was fresh and crisp, the marinara dipping sauce was also pretty tasty. The crab dip was also good, not as creamy as some other that I've had but has more the consistency of a pasts. Don't get me wrong, it was delicious. Dinner: I had the steamed shrimp plate with a side of fries and a Cesar salad. The salad was good but the fries I probably wouldn't get next time. Maybe try the baked potato?! My husband had the seafood special plate which consisted of a crab cake on top of a piece of seared tuna with steamed shrimp and she crap soup. The crab cake was great and the she crap soup had great flavoring. The she crab soup was not too thick or too thin but somewhere right in the middle, perfect consistency! We did not have dessert but did enjoy a bottle of wine! Great wine selection for a local favorite!

We came in on a Saturday night with a group of 10. We were seated very quickly but we could not all sit together due to fire code or something. We were right across from each other so it was no big deal. My wife ordered the she crab soup cup and it was absolutely delicious. So creamy and flavorful. I had a taste of the hot crab dip too and it was very good, as usual. I love the chewy little bread pieces they give you to dip the crab with. My wife and I always order the same thing here. She always get the crab cake sandwich. I have had it too and it's always delicious. No filler, very big. I always get the fried scallop platter. The garden salad with ranch was good and I had a baked potato. The real food was the scallops. They were so sweet and big. I was stuffed at the end. I absolutely love their cocktail sauce too. The hushpuppies are really good too. Overall, everyone was happy and I always crave this place for seafood. Our server, Alyssa was very attentive and polite. I love this place.

The food was so yum! I ended up getting the crab cake sandwich which was very thick and meaty! Service was quick and efficient. I will be back!

Went here for a late lunch after our boat tour on the Miss Hampton II. It was a little difficult to find as it seems your either going down a dead-end road or straight to a marina. The place looks fancy from the outside but is very casual on the inside. Nice dock/water views inside. Menu ranges from inexpensive burgers to the expensive crab cakes and steak. Wait staff was very pleasant. Ordered a shrimp basket, which was excellent. Couldn't even eat everything. Waitress brought refill for drinks without being asked. I would probably go here again if I'm in the area again. I've got no complaints and when vacationing, no complaints is a good thing.

The best part of my meal was the steamed broccoli and hush puppies. I was pretty disappointed in my crab cake, and my crab meat dish. The crab cake was obviously baked and not pan fried. The crab meat dish, which when I asked the difference between the dish and the crab legs (from the raw bar menu), I was told it is "crab out of the shell, so all the work is done for you". After tasting it I knew there was a bigger difference. Apparently they get it is from a can, most restaurants use this for crab dips and cakes but it was advertised as a 'steamed crab' meal which I paid $25.99... It's like ordering tuna in a restaurant and them giving you microwaved "Chicken of the Sea" at a market value of 10 times more. When the waitress came to check on us I told her it didn't taste good and that it wasn't what I was expecting from what she explained. She asked if I wanted to order something else and I declined. As for the crab cake, I ordered it because I had previously eaten at the Poquoson Surf Rider and a friend I was dining with ordered the crab cake... Hers smelled like crab, looked and tasted delicious- unfortunately the Hampton Surf Rider crab cake tastes like it came directly out of the can into a baking dish and into the oven. No flavor whatsoever. The Hampton Surf Rider must not be following the same protocol as Poquoson and I will not be going back to this location.

I will start with the good....the crab cake was tasty. We were terribly disappointed by the service. My son has an allergy. I called ahead to make sure he could have the crabcakes -his favorite. After going through the menu trying to find sides he could have (difficult as many items were not made in house-and frustrating because our waitress was visibly annoyed ), our waitress served our kid am item that was entirely made of his allergen (corn-hushpuppies). When we called her on it she shrugged and smiled. She blamed the cook who she clearly had not told about the allergy. The manager took over our service....she was pleasant. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone with an allergy. The crabcakes were not worth all this.

We had a great experience! Started off with rum runners, piña coladas, and White Russians: all strong and delicious! The crab dip and tuna bite appetizers were great; I would recommend both! Crab legs were fantastic! So so sweet with generous portions! Our waitress, Tara was awesome; friendly and on top of her game!

Very busy night and staff was challenged. Meats were cooked to perfection. Portion size has shrunk on Crab Pot. Veggies were cold. Not their best night.

When I was in Hampton, a local described this place as "upscale," which I'm not quite sure I get, especially after seeing pictures of fried clam strips on yelp. It's pretty casual though the view of the marina is gorgeous on a sunny day. I got a crab cake which was good, but not terrific, and most of the seafood our table ordered looked good. The mud-pie, for dessert, however, knocked our socks off. Three of us split one serving (it is huge) and with its oreo cookie crust it was awesome. I highly recommend saving room for it.

First time here... A bit pricey, yet it is good! The service could have been better, waitress did not come by as often as I would have liked yet still a good experience!

My only complaint is the French fries were a bit cool but the food was awesome! Quick and pleasant service. Would come back in a heart beat! The crab cakes and legs are to die for

  • Hilary R.

This place was just okay. The calamari appetizer was the best calamari I've ever had, fresh and not chewy. But the rest of our meal was just meh. My husband and I both ordered 1 pound each of the steamed crab legs. That's all we got. No sides, no bread, just legs. And honestly it didn't seem like a pound. The portion was skimpy. Also, the restaurant was freezing cold. I needed a jacket. Think I would have been better at Red Lobster with their yummy biscuits.

Tucked away for only the locals to find I guess... It was just "okay." Nice family atmosphere, and obviously popular by the by the busy crowd at 5pm on a weekday. First of all, the staff is attentive and polite. Service was quick & efficient. Our lump crab meat appetizer was delicious. Our entrees were overcooked & everything is dusted with Old Bay. And I do mean everything. Everything was edible and we were happy to find a place with local crab... But this could have been done a lot better. A LOT better. Especially for the price. Ps. The huge broccoli florets were an added bonus, instead of fries or coleslaw.

It was my first time here. I was not disappointed. It's a seafood resturant. The food was absolutely delicious. They service was great. I would recommend this place.

    (4)
  • John S.

Had lunch and the fish sandwich I had was pretty good. The fries at an additional cost were not. The crab dip for appetizer was pretty good. The up charge for extra pita chips was not. The service was lower than average And the recreational tax was also unexpected. I am from Florida so I can get decent fish for lunch for a lot less than $117 for four adults and two kids under four. Your Va. Taxes at work.

Upon the recommendation of locals I visited this place, despite the recent negative reviews here. I had a House Specialty Broiled Seafood Platter $22.99 which was described as "Fish of the day (Flounder), scallops, shrimp, a crab cake kissed with Old Bay and broiled to perfection." along with 2 sides...the potato salad and the Caesar salad. The sides were acceptable. The seafood was overcooked to the point of being rubbery. The hush puppies were nice and crispy on the outside, but doughy on the inside. Service was slow. Granted, I got there at 6 pm but they seemed understaffed. While no one was rude, would it have killed someone to smile and make a lil small talk to a an out of town diner eating alone?

Qualifier: I am, for all intents and purposes, a seafood savant a lá Benjamin "Bubba" Blue from Forrest Gump. I was born and raised in Virginia, and have lived in SoCal for the last 7yrs, and seafood has always been a major staple of my life and diet. I feel sorry for people that are allergic to it. Anyway... Having lived nearly half my 33yrs in Hampton, I BELIEVE Surf Rider's is one of the better seafood restaurants in the area. Is it the best? No. But my experiences have always been really good. I had the pleasure of going back to Surf Rider's for the first time in nearly 8yrs while in town visiting my family, and just like when I ate here in my teens and early 20s, I enjoyed the meal, service, and company I was with. I ordered the Chesapeake burger, which was a crab cake on a burger, and I tore it up! I had zero complaints about my food. The service was good considering we were there during peak dinner hours. The waitress was available without being overbearing nor absent. We never had to wait long for anything when asked, so she appeared to be on her job! Some may say that the restaurant is overpriced, but considering the location, ambiance, and quality of seafood, I think the prices are reasonable, if not deserving. And full disclosure: I'm cheap. Nay...frugal. So I think the pricing is subjectively and objectively reasonable...at least I hope I'm being objectively reasonable. So I say all that to say this...my experience at Surf Rider's has always been above average. I've never had a terrible meal, nor a bad experience. I recommend this establishment to anyone looking for a nice meal in downtown Hampton. Consistency is key, and this establishment is consistent if nothing else!

  • Rob B.

Surf Rider name would imply that this restaurant would serve a variety of seafood. That is not the case. Wait staff tried to tell me the only certain fish is in season, like I had stupid wrote on my forehead. If you want some great service and seafood go somewhere else. There is not a lot of seats to view the water either which is one reason i gave this place a single star. If they increase the seafood selection I might change this review.

    (1)
  • Cooper The Coton ..

Surf Rider is a favorite of mine in Hampton. A casual seafood restaurant with excellent food and a relaxing atmosphere. It's a bit off the beaten path, across the river from Hampton University, Surf Rider offers a variety of seafood options prepared to your liking; fried, broiled, or raw. I had the broiled seafood platter and it was great. The service was prompt and courteous, and my glass reminded filled. It is sometimes hard to find an authentic, no frills seafood restaurant these days, but you can find it here at Surf Rider.

  • K G.

We stopped in here on our way home from Norfolk looking for fresh seafood. We were not disappointed. The softshell crabs were wonderful and the broiled scallops and fish were cooked perfectly. There was about a 35 minute wait, which isn't bad for a Saturday evening. We would definitely come back again.

  • Vance S.

By far some of the freshies seafood I have every had! Service is great! Food is AWESOME and the atmosphere is wonderful. FRESH, FRESH, FRESH!

  • Robert C.

Had better. Much hype about this place. Location was great, easy to get to...just follow the signs. Food is overpriced IMO. Hostess was a bit rude Drinks were 15 bucks for two adults and two children. The calamari was decent, but lacked flavor. The Chesapeake burger was good, but a crab cake on a burger isn't that great of a combo. The jumbo butterflied shrimp lacked flavor as well. However, the kids chicken fingers were great. Extra star for the chicken fingers!

  • K B.

It was very busy and quite loud inside when we came for dinner mid week. We only waited 10 minutes or so to be seated. The server was friendly. We got our drinks and salad quickly, but it took quite a bit longer than normal for our meal to come out. The crab legs were outstanding and worth the wait! My husband wasn't too thrilled with his Alfredo pasta with blackened tuna though. The menu has a good selection of seafood platters, sandwiches, and wraps at various prices from $10-$25.

  • A N.

Oh so yummy! It was tucked away, but as a result there were quaint views of the marina. The food and portions were good and the service was great! The best part is that they easily accommodated to my gluten allergy. So I was able to have a delicious lunch without any hassle.

    (5)
  • Mos D.

Not sure why this place has such a high rating. It's very much the tourist trap. You aren't paying for the food, because it's mediocre at best. You are paying for the clean dining room and good view of the marina. The Fried Flounder and Crab Cake sandwich would have been DECENT if they didn't put it on stale bread with unadvertised tomatoes soaked into the breading. Alas... Additionally, the Shrimp and Corn Chowder was broken, (i.e. too hot for the corn starch) cough cough. At $40 for lunch for two I'll pass next time and try somewhere that cares about the food more than the view.

    (2)
  • Brian L.

This is a great place down by the water next to the marina. This place was recommended by my hotel. I had the crab cake and fried shrimp. They were both excellent. The crab cake had a large amount of crab meat and was cooked perfectly. The service was great and so was the view. The sides were average but the salad was nice and fresh. I would definitely go back.

    (4)
  • Tallman F.

I have been there a couple of times and have enjoyed each time. It is REAL hard to find but you know you are getting there when you start passing a lot of houses that look like they are built for midgets (seriously).... I was like .... what da h3LL ... anyway stay the course - it is on the water and is really nice and fresh!!!!

    (4)
  • Sean S.

Not very impressed with the food, especially for the price. I ordered blackened tuna bites and they were just ok. They were not really "blackened" at all and just seemed kind of mushy. My buddy ordered a steak and it was an over done thin little sad piece of beef. I guess they are more known for seafood, but the steak was definitely not worth $30. Great service but the food was overpriced and not that great.

    (3)
  • K M.

Meh. Maybe the locals really love this but as an out of towner I wasn't that impressed. Nice setting, okay food with okay service. We got fried haddock which was a very generous portion but still didn't justify the 20$ price tag. Crab legs were good too.

  • Levinia T.

Great Seafood right on the Marina. There is another location in Poquoson, which is equally as good. I have been a few times and most of the time it is delicious. However, it is a hit or miss. There are times that the food tastes a little off. They make a great she-crab soup, but it is not served daily. Their Caesar dressing is house made, so it is pretty good. Their seafood is very fresh, so try the shrimp and crab legs!

  • Donna P.

I am a HUGE fan of seafood and Surf Rider serves some of the freshest seafood dishes I have had - well fresh food in general actually. Especially since a lot of times I think that most fried seafood I get at restaurants basically taste like the ones you get in those yellow Gorton's boxes at the grocery store. Based on what I saw on yelp reviews, I ordered the crab cake + fried shrimp and got a side of broccoli and hollandaise sauce (the dish normally comes with 2 sides, but the broccoli counts as 2 since they basically serve you an entire head of broccoli). Crab Cake = ALL crabmeat. No fillers at all. Delicious. Fried Shrimp = Big pieces of shrimp. I can't remember how much it came with... maybe you can count it in the photo I posted lol. Broccoli w/ Hollandaise = Eh, tasted like... broccoli... and hollandaise. Nothing really special about it except that you get a ton of broccoli. We also ordered calamari as an appetizer. BIG pieces of calamari, not at all chewy or rubbery, and came with a lot on one plate. I forgot what my husband ordered, but his came with fried oysters - which I also tried, and thought it was really good as well. Lightly breaded and not too greasy. Everything we had was delicious, I would definitely come here again.

When we first bought our house nearby, we went here to celebrate. And I'm glad we did. There was 9 of us and they were able to seat us with barely any wait time.. Both lunch n dinner gets busy in here so we try to come early. I enjoy lunch time more here. ( laughing, cause my girls are in school and I can enjoy my crab legs without sharing) It's very clean, the staff is alway friendly and the food is good. I mean GOOD! The soup is tasty, and the crab dip is good too. It's a smaller portion than others spots in Hampton. I do love their broccoli and hollandaise sauce. Yum, they aren't skimpy with that! Overall, this place is for good eats. The view is beautiful, the place is clean, and the food is fresh. My kids love it here, steam crabs, shrimps...fish..everything that makes my kiddos happy. We enjoy coming here. The staff have been phenomenal!

  • Delaney G.

Food was great (a bit over priced) and portions were generous. The outside was very enjoyable (marina view) but I felt the inside dining room lacked the same cool atmosphere. I wouldn't recommend this place for a special occasion of any sorts, at least for inside dining.

    (3)
  • Leslei L.

The food is good but the servers make you feel like your just a bunch of cattle...move em in gettem out. We used to go here all the time but not a friendly person works here. Pricey tasty seafood but a smile would be nice too & not some 21yr old in holey jeans & and a tshirt serving me pricey food giving me my check before I'm done eating.

Love love love this place! Excellent food, wonderful service, and a vibrant atmosphere. The staff was excellent. Every single one that we came in contact with was friendly and paid great attention to detail. We were served in a timely manner and checked on frequently. The food came out hot and was delicious. I would recommend the Alfredo pasta and the sweet and sour shrimp appetizer. The pasta was thick and creamy but not too heavy and the shrimp was cooked to perfection. Overall the experience was great and I definitely will be returning.

Excellent service! Decent local beer selection. Crab cakes were ok nothing crazy to rave about. Great to try: Clam strips steamed little neck clams Cream crab soup Filet mignon Ceasar salad

  • Randy M.

The food was OK, but the service wasn't. Took a while to have our drink orders taken, and when our orders were taken details were not followed. Like Manhattan on the rocks that came with no rocks. Same for the food, I ordered a flounder/crab cake sandwich with the crab cake on the side, but it was placed directly on the flounder separated by a piece of american cheese, Gross. Would have ordered sans "cheese" but it wasn't listed in the description. The homemade chips were oily and tasted so. Lastly, there's a 1 drink refill limit for soft drinks, and the server was really pushing for another diet coke. calamari was good, but marinara was watery.

On a weekend trip to Hampton, my boyfriend and I went here for dinner two nights in a row, we liked it so much. We had a craving for steamed seafood- what else does one crave during a weekend on the coast? So Surf Rider was recommended to us by our Hampton hosts, located less than ten minutes by foot from where we were staying. We ordered the crab dip for an appetizer. Pair that with a buttery chardonnay or sauvignon blanc and you have the perfect opening to your coastal dinner. The steamed seafood pot with crab legs, shrimp and clams was perfect. We nailed our second attempt to crack open crab appendages, and the reward was delicious. The side of dinosaur-portioned broccoli with hollandaise sauce was one of the most interesting and tasty broccoli presentations yet. The second night, we went with a crab cake and steamed crab leg combo, which was just as good, if not better. My boyfriend usually shies away from crab cakes, but Surf Rider had crab cakes that were hearty and not overly bread crumb-laden. The pot of steamed legs was, once again, delicious. The crab is so good you don't need the butter to dip it in. Surf Rider doesn't get a perfect five because the wine was satisfying but not exceptional. I think that smaller local restaurants should have more local wine offerings, but that's beside the point. The atmosphere had an olive-gardeny feel, and was a bit mass chain restaurant feeling, which clashed with the beautiful yacht-club exterior and outside atmosphere. Redecorate your restaurant and get better wine, and this place would easily be a five-star restaurant!

  • Martina D.

I've visited the Surf Rider in Norfolk many times and I would say the food is very comparable. The shrimp is always good, scallops really great as well. I used to love the crab dip, but it seems like its becoming more and more mayonnaise and less crab, come on! The pita rounds served with it are really good, BUT I noticed that the last time we were there they asked if we wanted to pay more for extra pita rounds and that the waitress "highly suggested" we do so. We agreed, but got the same amount we always do...hmmm...

Just fantastic! Finally I've found a place on the coast that serves fresh, delicious seafood. It was crowded when we got there, but they still seated us quickly. The food was super fresh, and they were serving very reasonably priced hurricanes that were tasty and potent. You MUST try the sweet and spicy shrimp appetizer - some of the best shrimp I've ever had. I had a seafood sampler, and all of it was fresh, tender, and flavorful. If I had more money, I'd eat here once a week.

I got sick from the scallops. I have never gotten sick before or since from scallops.

"Parts of the meal (service) was good but the meal was not acceptable. They gladly took my broiled seafood sampler entree back when I point out the dried out fish and frezer burned shrimp. Then the 2nd version they brought to me was there inside of 3 minutes. Hmmm - slightly better than their first attempt - still had freezer burned shrimp. The Scallops were cooked okay yet a little bland although the Lima Beans were good. The place was packed and I hope everyone else had a better meal than i did at Surf Rider. Bonefish Grill next time I'm in the area.

My sister and I had drinks and dinner at the bar on a Friday night. Candy was a great bartender and server -- very knowledgable about the menu and super friendly! We both had crab cakes and I also had fried shrimp. The crab cakes lived up to their reputation -- lots of crabmeat and delicious. The sides were also great --especially the hush puppies. Portion size was generous. We were too full for dessert. I'll definitely go back!

Been here 3 times, twice just the wife and I, and once with the kiddos. Food was great. appetizer sampler was great and could have been an entire meal! Crab legs perfectly cooked. everyone and waitress said the crab cakes were the bomb. Both of us did not like them. A little dry and had odd flavor. I don't ever order them as not a fav of mine anyway. they were very meaty which I would prefer vs bread if I even liked crab cakes. had a steak once and was very tasty and cooked the way I like. Calamari was awesome and again was a HUGE portion. would be enough for an entire meal for one. Broccoli and sauce was given to us for free just to try and was amazing! Chicken strips I must say were the best I have ever tasted!! A little hard to find, but as other reviews say just keep driving, as if you are going to get on a boat. Garmin will get you there.

Crab dip=bad dip See, I don't normally order appetizers, unless 1.) it's 1/ 2 price during HH, 2.) a substitution for an entrée, or 3.) my friends pay/share. So for me to order an appetizer AND an entrée here is kind of a big deal. I usually love all creamy, high fat dips, but this was a big disappointment. First of all, the name is misleading because this dip tasted like it was 99% cream cheese- I could barely taste the crab. I think they should rename it "cream cheese and crab dip." Other stuff eaten that night: Popcorn shrimp basket with shrimp, fries and hush puppies: Shrimp was bigger than I expected, fries mediocre and too soft, hush puppies deliciouso. Cocktail sauce had a surprising kick to it but the tartar sauce tasted too mayo-y. The sauces came in little plastic containers which I thought was a bit tacky for a seafood restaurant. Steak and crab cake combo with mashed potatoes, and apple sauce: Steak was oily?! My dining companion suspects that it was pan fried and not grilled. Lame. The crabcake was good (lots of crab meat) but a bit burnt. The apple sauce was chunky and natural tasting. Mashed potatoes were untouched and unattractive- overly whipped and pasty looking. Service was great. There was a bit of a wait on a Friday night (pretty small place), but we took a pleasant walk on the dock and looked at boats. Too bad they don't have outdoor dining.

While recently in Hampton we met an employee of the university whom suggested we try the Surf Rider. It was very good. The She-crab soup was good, within buttery, sherry finish. There were nine of us and we tried lots of things from calamari (yummy) to the shrimp po'boy, salmon, scallops (a tad bit tough) to clams. Dessert was ok, but we would definitely return. When driving here don't be alarmed if you travel through a residential area...we considered it an adventure.

We have had some great meals here. It's close to our house and the seafood is consistently good. We ate here tonight and found the service to be lacking. The glasses of wine were overpriced and the table and bar stools in the bar were dirty and sticky. I know it was a busy Friday night, but for the prices this place charges for dinner, it would be nice to see the service improved.

I frequent this restaurant and love it, my only complaint would be that it gets very packed very quickly at dinner time, but hey what do you expect from a great restaurant. I always order the seafood surf rider and it never disappoints, its a little pricey but well worth it because they give you a good amount of food and the crab dip is especially delicious!

It was a little of a wait so we grabbed seats at the bar. The waitress/bartender was very pleasant. I ordered the seafood trio which was broiled tuna, 3 fried butterflied shrimp and a medium sized crab cake, which came with two sides our a salad. I opted for fries. There was no sauce for any of the food but the waitress offered me cocktail sauce and butter. The tuna was waayyy over cooked. The crab cake was descent inside the crunchy exterior. The shrimp were ok. My husband had the broiled scallops, over cooked as well. The place has potential but if you expect quality food you may not receive it.

Had a great dinner with a very large group of business associates and the service was awesome! Appetizers were delicious; definitely worth ordering the warm crab dip. When our meal came, plates of food were laid in front of us and we dove in to some wonderful fresh seafood and sides; my broiled crab, shrimp and scallops were to die for and the broccoli was our of this world!

This used to be the place to go for excellent crab cakes and seafood. My wife and myself went this past week and were disappointed. She ordered the crab cake and I ordered the broiled flounder. Her crab cake was lacking it's usual consistency and flavor. My flounder was a poor choice. It was dried out not overcooked. It was way an old, dried frozen filet which had neither texture nor taste,. C'mon! for 21 bucks it was not even worthy to be fast food. Complaining is not worth the effort these days as you know. Another crossed out on our list of good local dining places.

I had She Crab soup that was very good but not quite excellent. For my entree, I choose the soft shell crab. This came on a plate by itself with a little garnish and an unknown sauce. (I asked for cocktail sauce instead), I though the crab was really good, the breading was nice and lite and not over browned. The taste was excellent. I would definitely come back again. Pros: fast and efficient service, nice atmosphere, reasonable price. Cons: A little noisy, hard to find since map marker is incorrect. Set your Nav device to N 37.0166 / W 76.2886

I've been to the other Surf Rider in Virginia Beach, so I was looking forward to this place, thinkin it'd be the same atmosphere, fun, good drinks, easy going. Man was I wrong. By far the worst. customer. service. ever. Seriously, I've never been treated with such disrespect. I've made it a point to ensure every restaurant review site has my review on it, so NOBODY goes throught what myself, my wife and the wedding party we were with for a rehersal dinner, went through last friday night. If you see an older guy in his 50's with gray hair, leave. he's horrible. We called weeks ago, and after being told they "dont do reservations but would accomodate us in a timely manner" we headed over to Surf Riders. Now, please keep in mind, I took work off early and drove 2 hours, while most of the bride's family took a 12 hour trip to make it for the wedding, so we were expecting to be seated somewhat soon. 7:00. We check in, 2 hour wait. Not bad considering it's a Friday night. So we agree to sit outside and have a few drinks, get to know everyone and just mingle. 8:45. Bride checks with the manager to see how things are coming along. We're told it shouldn't be much longer, they're just waiting for the table next to ours to leave so we can seat all 15 people instead of half the party. We ask for the next available table at this point because we're all starved. 9:30. After waiting 2 and a half hours we're getting upset. as anyone would, but my wife and i head inside to see what was near the big table, so we can see what's looking like it's becoming available. We spot a booth/table adjacent to the large table for the wedding party that would be perfect. I grab the bus boy and ask him to clean the table for us so we could sit there. Problem solved, right?!? No. The manager (Bobby) stops us from sitting and tells us our table is on the other side of the restaurant. When I say other side, I'm talking... you cant see it from the large table that seated 8. After we asked why, the manager starts coping an attitude. And my wife asks him (reasonably) why we couldn't have the table we just had cleaned off, and switch with the people were that were waiting for the table. This table was not a "prime seat" or anything special. Bobby replies "I don't have a crystal ball to tell me when the next table is going to open up. We've had people waiting at the bar for a table now for some time." I reply, standing behind my wife, "Whats with the attitude?" He then proceded to ignore at first, then spoke down to us and treated us like we were some sort of trash off the street. Now, I'm a service manager in the automotive business, my wife and all of the females in the bridal party are retail managers, and the groom is a gym manager. We all have to deal with customer service. If this guy is still employed with the restaurant, I'd be shocked. I demanded to speak to the owner. He came out and talked with me, and I made sure to keep my emotions in check. I did state that if this was elsewhere, Bobby would have been laid out on the floor because NOBODY will ever talk to my wife like that. ever. He tells me he's sorry and I tell him it sucks for him because I'm taking the group that hadn't sat down, elsewhere. I ended up buying McDonalds for the ladies and bringing it to their room at 11PM, because they weren't feeling like going anywhere after that whole ordeal. If you cannot accommodate a party of 15, then have the common decency to say so when the party calls ahead weeks in advance, and even when they check in. I was in the restaurant business for 4 years, it's not complicated. (no offense to anyone in the business). As I said all of the people in the wedding party were managers in different fields who specialize in customer service. This was the worst experience I've had in a restaurant or any public venue. I will never set foot at that place and definitely tell people to head to Virginia Beach for a better experience.

Horrible! Bad service. Bad food. Over priced. We got almost raw French fries, ice cold Lima beans and cold oysters. My fried shrimp were way over cooked. Our server was rude to start with and her attitude got worse after we told her our food wasn't good. The food is not worth the prices. Harpoon Larry's is the place to go for local seafood.

We keep trying to give this place one more chance because years ago it was the go to restaurant in Hampton. Once again we were disappointed. The scallops were old. They tasted salty at first then had a bad aftertaste. We asked for shrimp instead. Our server just added the shrimp to the tab without removing the scallops. We had to ask to have the check corrected. No apology, just an annoying look...like it was our fault we don't like expired food. The host spent his time tearing pages out of coloring books. Maybe he should spend his time more wisely. Try "The Point" in Phoebus. Way better food and service.

Best She-Crab Soup in the world is served here. Really nice view of The marina too. A bit on the pricey side though.. We usually end up with a $50 bill for 2 entrees, soup and a few adult beverages. They have some of the best tuna bites In the area. I highly recommend them.

This place is a little hard to find if you don't have GPS. Other than that it's awesome. A little busy so plan to wait like 5-15 min which isn't bad at all. We sat at a bar top, waitress was on top of her game even with the restaurant full. Good drinks. Dark and stormy is on point. We got the tuna and dolphin (fish of the day). Two large filets for each dish, the side was a huge head of broccoli with cheese for dipping. You can look at the large boats around the marina before and after you eat. Highly recommend this place! We went to IMAX movie right after this, real close by.

Long wait, steak overcooked, wrong drinks brought to us, weak side portions, and seated in a garage converted to dining area to cover overflow. Overall not impressed with anything about this place.

We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place! We go every time we are even close to the Hampton area. The hot crab dip is fantastic! The crab cakes are really some of the best around and everything we have ever had here is great with regards to the entrees. The service is always good but if you go during peak hours or a Friday, Saturday night expect a wait. The locals keep this place hoppin and for good reason. Go for the food, the desserts are just ok but the seafood rocks. Order two crab dips and skip the pie. Once you try it you will want more. It is not an easy place to find but once you do you will be glad you made the trip!

Delicious!! Absolutely delicious!! I went for lunch. I got the crab cake sandwich with added on fried oysters. Both were prepared to perfection. The crabcake just melted in my mouth. Wonderful amounts of lump meat and definitely not a lot of filler. The fried oysters were the best I have ever had. They were lightly breaded and very clean. There was never a bit of sand taste or anything chewy amount them. I only wish I had known about this place sooner. Boy have I been missing out!!

What a disappointment. I chose this restaurant because of the reviews I read on Yelp and was very sorry for the choice. I travel alone for business and always look for local restaurants,. This was bad choice I usually eat at the bar so that I have some company. Unfortunately, the bar tender was not very friendly or attentive. The order took way to long to come out and I was quite bored. I ordered the crab coctail and a Caesar salad with crab cake. Both were quite bland. The crab portion and the crab cake size were fine but the salad was small for an entree salad. The worst was not of the items had any distinguishing flavor. The menu boasted the best Caesar salad in town but it was simply, grocery store, bottled dressing. They even put a "heal" of the lettuce on my plate . They get $2.29 for a soft drink with only one refill - simply terrible I ordered a piece of blueberry pie for dessert and was told they make the pies there. The pie was mostly crust and sauce with few berries. Like the dinner, the pie lacked any taste. If you are in town on business and looking for a place to eat, avoid this one.

This place was well worth the search. The locals keep this place a secret for sure, wasn't in any of the dining books you get at the visitors center. My husband and I were pleasantly surprised. I had the crab cakes, and being from Maryland good crab cakes are a bit scrutinized. These were some of the best I've had. The broccoli side was very good and enough for two. My husband had the burger with the crab cake, which was also cooked to his liking. The oysters on the half shell were excellent. You may think your lost driving through the development, but the marina is at the end. Which would be easy for a boater. There is no doubt I would return here in the future trips to Va. Enjoy

I went there on a Thursday night around 7:30. Even thought the place was not crowded at all, I opted as a single to sit at the bar, freeing up any tables that may be needed later. During my 45 minute stay, no one else came to the bar except my waitress. The reviews I had read said the crab cake and shrimp were to die for. So I ordered them with asparagus and hollandaise. This meal was the most tasteless and bland seafood I have ever tasted. No seasoning in the crabcake and the 5 small and over fried shrimp were worse than frozen Gortons. 6 skinny and small asparagus with sauce. Two hushpuppies which I did not try. No offer of a side salad or bread with the meal. A horrible deal for over $21. Do not go there if you want well prepared seafood with taste. I did not even finish the meal.

I'm from out if town and a friend suggested this place for some good seafood that we weren't breaking the bank for. Let's just say I was not disappointed. As an appetizer we got the crab dip which I thought was pretty good. The entrees came with your choice of 2 sides or broccoli. there were several sides to choose from but I went with the broccoli side. This had to be the biggest piece of broccoli I have ever seen, I almost filled up on that alone! For the entree I went with the fried rockfish which also came with a couple hushpuppies. The hushpuppies were delicious and fish was even better. All around I was impressed with the food especially for the price and we had fine service as well.

The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars is because the portions are very good. I am very bothered that I paid $20 for a bland flounder fillet and $10 for cream cheese and a smidgeon of crab. The crab cake did not have fillers...or flavor. I'm going to look for dessert ELSEWHERE.

It's been said a million times, but it's worth saying again, that's how good it is. THE CRAB CAKES ARE DELICIOUS! It was my first time having crab cakes, and boy, have I been spoiled! It's like going to Peter Luger's to have your first steak. Besides the famous crab cakes, the other items I ordered were, although not equally, yummy as well. Jumbo shrimp with cocktail sauce? Fine by me! Mashed AND Baked potatoes? Don't mind if I do! And if the food wasn't enough, step outside and you have a breathtaking view. Go at sunset like I did and, well, the view doesn't get much better than that. OH, AND IF THAT WASN'T ENOUGH. most of the waitresses here are DROP DEAD GORGEOUS!

Surf Rider came highly recommended by friends, and we just got around to trying it out a few weeks ago. I was ready t be blown away, based on the great things we heard and after reading lots of good reviews. While the setting is gorgeous, overlooking the marina, I was not all impressed with the food. On our Saturday afternoon visit, we added our name to the wait list and looked out on the water as we waited outside. The staff said to expect about a 30 minute wait, which was fine. After about 45 minutes, I went inside to get an update on our wait time. Can you believe, they accidentally skipped our name and already sat another 4-5 people ahead of us?! The hostess apologized and sat us immediately. Walking into the dining area and seeing SEVERAL empty tables available as we had waited needlessly was bothersome. We ordered the crab dip as an appetizer and that was just "ok". Minimal crab, but mostly mayo and whatever else comprises the dip. The pita rounds it comes with were good. We each ordered the fried seafood platter which was also just "ok". The breading on the fish was bland and hardly seasoned at all, the shrimp was fresh, but nothing special. Coleslaw and hush puppies, mediocre. We love good seafood, but this just wasn't up to our standards. Will not return and will not recommend.

Based on the good reviews we drove out of the way on our trip to Williamsburg to get great seafood at a local, non touristy restaurant. Well, that didn't pan out. Why is is so hard to find a good restaurant?! We ordered a crab pot, that had one cluster of scrawny crab legs, unopened clams, dried out shriveled up corn and cheap sausage. The shrimp were ok. $22 bucks, not worth it. The server said it would be enough for 2. It's not. We also ordered a crab cake, expecting a Maryland style cake. It was all crab, which was good, but it was dry and bland, not the creamy delicious crab cakes I have had in the past. The server was very nice, and replaced our unopened clams with wide open ones (so contrastingly open that I think they just pried them wide open so we wouldn't complain). The broccoli was interesting. The "hollandaise sauce" was unlike any I have ever tasted. It tasted like gravy. Wasn't bad tasting, if they had called it gravy, I would have liked it better. Everybody at other tables mostly had fried food, so maybe they are better known for that.

Service good. Friendly staff. Great location and view but pretty much all the food was overcooked. Had the broiled platter and it was all overcooked except for the scallops. Which take the longest to cook anyways. Brother had the crab pot, also overcooked. After the meal we wished we would've just saved the money and went to captain George's for all you can eat seafood!

I had doubts we were actually going to find a restuarant at the end of route we took, but low and behold, we ended up at the marina! I was disappointed that they were out of calamari (since other reviewers had recommeded it). So we had a dozen oysters & split the broiled seafood platter. It was a very generous portion, enough for 2 people to share (if you aren't too hungry). Everything was good, but I had to ask my husband what we ordered, so that I could write the review. Obviously it wasn't very memorable. I'd go back and try some of the other menu items, (but I'd skip the pinot grigio- not worth the $6)

  • Nick P.

The level of service was inversely related to how busy they were. The waitress was nice and friendly, but clearly overtasked. My shrimp was overlooked and the soup was cold. There are no draft beers here. Other than that, it's pretty fairly priced and has a nice view and bar area.

  • Tory S.

Cool location, right on water with view of marina and Hampton U. Multi-cultural diners, no southern hassle, great food. Not "fine dining" at all, but for casual, mid-priced dinner on the water-this is it. The broccoli in holandsise is a specialty, and their tuna bites (Cajun) are so good. Crowded at prime times, so plan to have a drink in the bar while you wait.

This place is really fun to get to. A little crazy if you either doubt the GPS or are winging it. The place was popping when we got there and it can be a very noisy restaurant, Well worth it though. The insides are nice and the waitresses are highly efficient. We got the hot crab dip. Oh so good. Anything with crab rocks there and the scallops are slamming too. Hush puppies are a yes and the side of broccoli is gigantic. But the surprise of the hour are the chips that come with the sandwiches. Now I am a fries person all the way and then some but their chips are amazing. They are kettle chips and totally well done. I am never getting anything else. Try try and enjoy!

Visiting from out of town, I saw the Surf Rider Bluewater on Yelp. A little bit of a tough place to find without a GPS and you might question the destination as you transit the requisite suburban neighborhoods before you find yourself at the pier, but the food is worth the drive. I walked into Bluewater around 7 pm on a Monday night. The place was packed with what i took to be locals. Casual dress, lots of fun. Being single, and with tables and booths full, I elected to sit at the bar. Kandi was the only bartender and she was holding her own. Three quasi big screens were available to help me pass the time. I must have gone over the menu a half a dozen times. Too many choices. I decided to start out with the crab cakes ($13) and go from there. They were simply the best crab cakes I've ever had. No filler, just crabmeat. Tender, tasty and filling, and that was just the appetizer. I debated on the steamed snow crab legs, broiled fish/scallop/shrimp or go with the tuna steak sandwich. As I was pretty full from the crab cake, and asked Kandi for her recommendation. She pointed me toward the yellow tail tuna steak sandwich ($9) and she educated me on the different degrees of tuna steak doneness - a huge help. The tuna was a full half inch thick, and kissed with the seasoning of Old Bay. It hung over the sides of the hamburger bun it was served on. It's a no frills sandwich, tuna, tomatoes, lettuce. Tartar and cocktails sauce are available. I had mine plain. It was warm, tender and did I say tasty. I had never had a tuna steak before and it was a big surprise. I'm happy with Bluewater and will go back next time I'm in town.

I have had a lot of seafood from all over & this place is hard to beat. The quality is top notch and priced reasonably. I only wish the seating was bigger since we usually have to wait 30 mins or so to eat.

One of my favorite spots in hampton. hidden away in a beautiful marina. surf rider has friendly staff and lots to offer. the secret here is the broccoli side dish. it looks like a small shrub and is delicious even for those not fond of vegetables.

We always go to the Surf Rider when we visit my parents. I get the broiled crabmeat dish, which is wonderful, but really just about anything is good here. I can also recommend the crabcakes. Lots of people like to order the whole head of broccoli, but I think it is way to much so I usually get a salad and potato. The waitstaff is always friendly and the atmosphere is nice. Get here early on the weekend if you don't want to wait.
