Highly recommend this place to anyone near GMU. Go here instead of eating on campus the five minute walk is so worth it. We came in and wanted to stay to eat. They have a little shopping area. Which I browsed but not for very long. Average prices and good for getting water or a snack. We ordered two sandwiches which came out in less than ten minutes. My hubby and I have been to this place multiple times. Everything they make is fantastic from the sandwiches to their raspberry cookies. Delicious!

This place is average at best. Ordered the Reuben and it was heavy on the price but light on the ingredients. Had many a Reuben while growing up in New England and Bernie's is not there yet. Lots of bread, meat sliced too thin, and just not the right feel. When you bite into a real Reuben you don't succumb to "air" before actually getting to the core of the sandwich. Bernie needs to come with less bread and bring the goods!

I don't like pastrami. But I LOVE Bernie's grilled pastrami on jewish rye with all the proper fixins. Always done 100% awesome. A little on the pricey side like ~$7, but it's nice to know that amount of money can afford this kind of happiness. Other nice things are good collection of NA beverages, craft beer 6-packs at a decent price, boutique olive oil bar.

I like what's going on here at Bernie's! It's the kind of place you might drive past day after day without really wondering what's inside, but shed that impulse, pull into the lot, and give the place a shot. I bet you'll like it. I really recommend the breakfast here -- try the breakfast sandwich (get sausage) and let me know what you think. Atmosphere here is fine, if not a little austere. Bernie's would fit right into a New England town; it's got that sandwich shop feel. There isn't a lot of romance to the building's innards, but that's probably fine. I haven't seen the place packed inside yet, though, so maybe that changes things around a little bit. Give Bernie's a try and let us know what you think!

Why had I never been here before?! This delectable delicatessen is tucked away on the corner of Chain Bridge Road, just outside of the George Mason campus. Ever-ey-thang here is made in house and is completely fresh (except for the pastrami, which we learned is ordered from the best distributer in the area is the creme de la creme of pastramis .. hehehe). They have a grande selection of delicious sandwiches that will not disappoint! For an additional $3.50, you can even "NY size" any sandwich and they'll slap on a couple extra layers of meat. My boyfriend got the reuben. The meat was so tender that it nearly melted in my mouth. There was the perfect amount of sauerkraut to balance it out and it was topped with oozy, gooey cheese. Definitely beats out any other reuben's I've had in this area - it puts places like Jason's Deli to shame. I got the Turkey Florentine, which was a turkey sandwich on pumperknickle bread, topped with sprouts, fresh tomato, spinach and spicy mustard. The turkey was also fantastically tender and MOIST. I was also ecstatic over the sprouts, which I found aren't offered in much on the east coast - seems to be more of a west coast thing. SOLD ... and they didn't disappoint :) I will definitely be back to this hidden gem soon.

Went here to try something new and was not disappointed. My husband I both had the Turkey Sandwich Special that had gravy, stuffing, and cranberries. It was so good. My husband was still thinking about it hours later. The only negative things I would say about this place are that it is sort of a small place and was really crowded when we were there on a Saturday. It took awhile to get our food. They do have their own parking so that is a plus. I'm sort of sad we can't come here during the week since they close so early.

Have stopped in for a quick lunch. Sandwiches are great. Thick, tasty and unique. They have the Wagschall's deli meat line as well as well as unique craft brews and other bevs. The cakes and cookies are a treat as well.

First of all I'd like to be clear that I don't just dole out single star ratings because one little thing went wrong, a business really has to go the extra mile to earn the "bottom of the barrel". I am absolutely baffled how this place gets and average 4 stars from so many people......apparently their expectations are akin to someone who frequents a soup kitchen on a regular basis. I went here on a groupon which normally would compensate for a problem or two, but the entire experience was disappointing. First, the ordering setup is a complete cluster. If you're going to have people order at one register and pay at another, because you apparently haven't considered the confusion and inconvenience this causes, at least put some signs up!! Next, the girl that took our order (Haley, according to the receipt) should find another line of work. She was completely devoid of any tangible personality, didn't smile a bit, and barely spoke at all. On a 1-10 scale, her level of helpfulness was a zero, and her attitude was a -1. Combine this with the aforementioned disorganization of the ordering process, and you have a terrible experience before you even get to the food. Before we get to that though, the decor (if you can even call it that) and layout were uncomfortable at best. The place looked run down, old and dilapidated, unused coolers facing the dining area and everything just seemed unkempt. The extended wait for our food allowed us the opportunity to tune in to the lack of effort put into keeping this place up. We ended up waiting almost 25 minutes for two sandwiches, and there was only one customer ahead of us when we walked in. And finally, the food. The sandwiches were tiny, absolutely nothing special about them at all. I could have put these together for less than $10 at the grocery store and likely would have been more impressed with that alternative. The fries and onion rings were greasy and soggy, and smelled and tasted of fryer oil that hadn't been cleaned or changed out in months, if not years. Last of all, the staff was terribly disorganized which likely was the cause of our extended wait. I wouldn't go back to this place again if my meal was free.......it was absolutely one of the top three worst restaurant experiences I've had in the past 10 years. I honestly think the health department should give this place a once over.

I've been to Bernie's a couple of times and had pretty different experiences each time. The first time I went in a group and it was midday on the weekend. It wasn't packed but it was kindof busy. It was admittedly a little confusing figuring out how to order but nothing so complicated that I felt it was a problem. I enjoyed what Bernie's had to offer apart from their menu, namely the specialty olive oil and birch beer in a cozy setting (the restaurant resembles a cottage from the outside). They have a great deli menu and some yummy looking homemade soups. I got the special the first time which I believe was a ham and turkey with bacon. I thought it was great, though a little expensive and it took a while to be made. It's small and I understood that with how busy it was, it would take some time. The sandwich was pretty good! I really enjoyed it! I was a little envious of my roommate's hot steak and cheese which looked amazing covered in melting cheese. So when I returned a few days later, it was about 2pm on a Monday, I was really looking forward to getting the hot steak and cheese. The deli was dead, no line, and I even had a hard time finding someone to take my order. I ordered my sandwich without onions (a minor issue because they use a veggie mix so i also couldn't have peppers unfortunately) and I picked up one of the delicious looking desserts they have (New York cheesecake). This time, my food was ready super quick! Unfortunately, my steak and cheese was lacking any hotness. The cheese was not melty goodness and while the steak was good, it tasted more like potential than the amazing sandwich it should have been. I still think this place is great but I think you need to be careful of when you choose to go. Also, my dessert was epicly delicious.

The menu selection is large, but not overboard. The food and ingredients are authentic deli. I ordered a Reuben and treated myself to a fresh made peanut butter chocolate cookie. Both were SUPER DEEEEELICIOUS! Many places toast Reuben bread, which makes it dry and they don't use good quality meat, but at Bernie's they don't cut corners. The bread was crisp golden like a grilled cheese and the corned beef was fresh and high quality. I can't wait to return and try other items off their menu. If you go at peak lunch time be prepared to wait because it gets crowded. However, the food is worth the wait.

Whewwww! Been going to Bernie's since they opened (5-6 years?) and agree that they can make a good Deli sandwich, unfortunately the trade-off is long waits, missing items on call ahead orders and absolutely little concern for inconveniencing their customer. The last 6 times I have called ahead with my order and found 5 out 6 times the order wasn't even made until I got there. The one time the order was made they forgot to put half of it in my bag and an hour later and two trips I finally get the whole order with the slightest of forced apologies and it wasn't from Bernie who made a beeline to the back as soon as I came back to pick up the rest of my order. I must pass no fewer than 14 sandwich shops and deli's on my way to Bernie's and now I'll be giving each of them a try before I EVER considering going back to Bernie's Deli. I guess they figure they can keep it going with GMU students orders and know they'll have a new crop of customers they can inconvenience every 4 years!!!

Horrible service. Waiter was rude. They removed the soda machine nozzles & the soda spilled on a friend & they didn't say sorry but instead laughed. We didn't get to finish our meal and were asked to leave. Not coming back!

I really like Bernie's. It's a small and cozy spot and the menu is awesome--lots of sandwiches, traditional and unique, hot and cold, create your own, dinners and goodies like mac n cheese and then lots of sweet treats. I also like the little grocery store with items and wine. I haven't had their breakfast yet, but I'm sure it's good. Staff--my experiences have been positive. Everyone seems laid back and friendly. Has that local family business feel. I like the BLT, West Coast, CrabCake sandwiches best but I have liked everything I've tried here!

Went here last weekend while I was on Chain bridge road. I ordered the turkey with slaw and Russian dressing. I thought it was good but not great. I also ordered the macaroni salad which I did enjoy very much. The sandwich felt a little bland. I do think it was the meat. Something about it was dry. It wasn't bad but I was hoping it would be a little better. I'll definitely come back and try out there other sandwiches. If my next order is better I'll update my rating.

Quaint little place on Chain Bridge Rd near GMU. If you don't look it up or check out Street View ahead of time, you may have trouble finding it. For starters, they make their own meats; which is quite rare for a deli to do these days. I've had the meatloaf sandwich (which was seasoned perfectly, and not tasteless like say Subway or Paisanos) and their Turkey Spinach Special. Pickles are complimentary and they give you the whole pickle, not just a slice! Overall, decent deli with prices slightly above and quality well above chain sandwich shops (with the exception of Jimmy Johns) Their fresh pastries (made every morning) are quite delicious.

One of my favorite places to go for lunch around Mason. The food is terrific. I've never had anything bad here. They make their own roast turkey and corned beef. Very friendly staff. Best sandwich is the Mikey's Special. I get it with roast turkey instead of the smoked. The roast turkey is fantastic. I also got a free sandwich on my birthday last year. Not sure if they still do this, but if it's your birthday, it doesn't hurt to ask! They could speed up the sandwich-making process a bit. They usually get really busy around noon, and I've had to wait 15-20 minutes or more for my sandwich. This isn't too big a deal for me, but may be to others. I've also called in large orders plenty of times, and occasionally didn't have al the sandwiches in my bags before leaving. If you're picking up and order, be sure to check all your sandwiches before leaving!

Clean deli, snappy service, nice selection of items. Four stars just on the basis of carrying Cel-Ray soda. If you don't sell Cel-Ray, you automatically suck. Ordered the pastrami/corned beef combo. A hefty sandwich and not bad for $10. Unfortunately, as another reviewer pointed out, the meat is shaved too thin. I know this means you end up eating more air than meat so it's cheaper to sell, but the mouth feel is all wrong. Compare this to a hand carved, thick sliced pastrami at Katz's or the thick corned beef at Deli City and you'll feel the difference. I wouldn't mind so much except they make this sandwich with double cheese, which turns the whole sandwich into a gluey, pasty mass in your mouth. The whole thing just feels wrong, so next time I will probably go with a plain corned beef on rye or Reuben. Or pay the extra couple bucks at Chutzpah for a Fuggetaboutit.

If it makes a Southern guy (like me) speak fondly of them damn Yankees, trust me, this place is worth your time. For what a deli is supposed to be, hands down, Bernie's is the best Fairfax has to offer. This is an honest New York style that got lost in Northern Virginia. Now if y'all don't understand what it takes to be a great deli, this place will educate you. Deli: don't expect a flashy building, a snotty hostess or candle lite booths. Expect a likable and talkative ("forget-about-it") owner behind the counter, who'll to take your order. You'll get a parking space but that doesn't guarantee a table. (This place was loaded on Saturday at 2:00.) They have the typical coolers loaded with different drinks (beer included..YEAAH beer!). It's simple. It's cozy. First off, this place is serious about making things from scratch. Everything we ordered tasted really fresh. It is apparent Bernie's is not into cutting corners. Be sure to try the soup. Oh, their home made corned beef... is.... a.... dream. As a matter of fact, if you've never had a real Reuben (or thought you have) you got to get one here. I recommend treating yourself to the New York size. It has a full pound of their corned beef. Whoa. I do mean WHOA! They told us they have been working hard getting enough ready for the upcoming Saint Patrick's day rush. I got to say, I know some Irish eyes are going to be be smiling. Lastly, like baked goodie goodies too? Come in for a very "happy U-day". Simply put, their brownies will make you curse the old ladies at your churches next bake sale. Hells yea! The worst thing I have to say about this place is you'll regret the wasted orders at other sandwich shops.

This is a REAL DEAL DELI. By far, the best I've been to in the area. The corned beef and pastrami really surprised me. Very tender. This area of NoVA has really forced me to lower my expectations for even simple comfort foods, but the deli is a diamond in the rough and I will probably eat at no other around here from now on.

Best deli in town. Top of the line Boars Head meat, family owned and run, sides and desserts are great too. Portions are generous. I could go on and on about the food, but even better is the friendly service. My first visit was this summer and I had left my wallet at home in our beach bag, only to notice this at the register after I ordered food for me and my 5 year old daughter who at the time was excited I treated her to dessert. So once I discovered my wallet was not with me I only had enough cash to pay for the meal without the dessert. The cashier Hailey felt bad for me and pitched in for the dessert by paying for it with her own tip money. I told Bernie the owner who was there what happened. What a great first impression that was and to make it better when we got home and ate the food was excellent! I went back the next week in spite of it being a 30 minute drive from my home and continue to go as often as I can. Good location in heart of Fairfax City and next to GMU, great food, BEST SERVICE! Love this mom and pop shop.

Went here on a Saturday afternoon in the mood for some soup and sandwiches. My husband and I are vegetarian/Pescetarian and were happy to see several selections. My husband got the cheese sandwich and I got the Little Italy (Tomato, Mozzarella, and pesto). We also got the vegetable soup. Everything we got was delicious, especially my sandwich which I have to say is one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. That pesto dressing is amazing! The vegetable soup was tasty and hearty. My husbands cheese sandwich was good, but with a little too much cheese (if there can be such a thing). Wonderful lunch!

I finally stopped in at Bernie's two weeks ago and proceeded to kick myself for about a week thinking this place had been there for years, not just a year and a half or so.. but for that week, thinking that my dad and I had continually passed up this place in favor of Roy Roger's after baseball or basketball camps at Mason for nearly 15 years was depressing. The people here are friendly. The kind of friendly that creeps out a native NoVA person to an extent. Bernie recommended I try the Corned Beef on their fresh baked French Bread. Now, I hate slaw & dressing normally,but upon his insistence I try it, I did. After devouring the sandwich at my office to the horror of my co-workers and giving the apparently amazing pickle away since I'm not a pickle fan... I quickly concluded that I have not had that good of a non-Italian sandwich in a long time. If you don't like Slaw & Dressing, get it anyways unless you can't digest it, it makes the sandwich that much better. I've gone back a few times now... tried the Pastrami on Sourdough with the Slaw & Dressing. Ridiculously good. I spoke with Bernie and I believe he said everything but the processed meats are cooked there. So the Corned Beef, Pastrami, Ham, Roast Beef, & Turkey are made there... which makes me really want to get the Roast Beef sandwich there on French with some Sharp Provolone... Philly Style. I've now spread the word to about 4 or 5 friends who have all extremely enjoyed it. I want to try some of their sides now... especially that Beef Mac & Cheese. That looks absurdly good. The complaint about it taking about 20 minutes for food is spot on, but really, this place isn't Subway. I'd suggest calling in the order if you can and just asking for a specific pick up time. If you're going alone and want to kill time, they have the Post right there. In NoVA, we are lucky to have a few good places like this to eat. I'd call it a Deli equivalent of the Italian Store in Arlington. Close enough to the real thing that you're going to be able to enjoy it without thinking it's done better else where.

It was fine, but not spectacular like I had heard. We went for sandwiches one day, and then decided to try their beer can chicken for dinner since I drive past there on my way home from work. Sandwiches were fine. I had a grilled chicken something or other. It wasn't memorable, but it was fine. The beer can chicken was also okay, but not spectacular. After all the hype I was expecting something incredible, but it wasn't much better than the chickens you pick up at Giant or Safeway. It was kind of a let down. It was a cute place. I'm sure we'll end up there again sometime, but I certainly won't go out of my way. It gets very crowded and the service is very slow. So if you are in a hurry, don't expect to drop in for a quick sandwich. For two sandwiches we waited about 20 minutes. We called ahead for the chicken and it was ready when I got there.

Solid deli food. Quality and selection is there. Their meatloaf sandwich is a must try. I live across the street so the location is perfect for me - but it's just a 1/2 mile down the road from Old Town Fairfax. Very happy to have it in the community. Only complaint is that their security alarm seems to be extra sensitive. I've heard it go off several times in the evenings.

Made my first trip to Bernie's yesterday. Based on the reviews on Yelp I had high expectations and it was a bit of a letdown. The first problem was the wait. It took just over half an hour before we received our sandwiches. We ordered at 1:30 so it was during lunchtime and we overheard the guys complaining about how a bunch of people showed up at once, but I really didn't think it was crowded at all. I ordered the Rueben and it was okay, but nothing special. The corned beef was good, but not as good as people are saying on here. Also, I found it disappointing that the bread was toasted rather than grilled. Granted, a lot of places take the easy way out and just put it on toast, but that's weak and not what I would expect from a place that holds itself out as a NY deli. At the end of the day, it wasn't horrible, but I won't be in any hurry to return.

For a little New York flavor without paying tolls or hoping the Chinatown bus, I recommend heading out to Fairfax and making a stop by this smallish transplanted NY deli for some delicious sandwiches. This shop has got all the goods. You want olive and cream cheese on Rye? BOOM, Roasted! You want a New York sized Ruben wit french dressing? Forgetaboutit! The deli also comes equipped with a serious set of drink choices and some nice sides. The payment system is a little strange, but you'll figure it out. But, in classic new york fashion, if you want regular tap water, you have to really want it. You first pick up a cup from the cashier, then get your ice, then come back and ask them to fill it with water... ummmm... yeah... Other than fighting off some rabid Fairfax civil servants, you've got yourself a HUGE sandwich at a decent (not so DC or NY price).

This was a pretty good place. They do charge extra for tomatoes though, I guess thats just a new thing that restaurants are doing these days. I had the pastrami sandwich with cheddar and mustard on marble rye, and it was excellent. I noticed that they have 6 am breakfast. I am sure I will incorporate that into my next visit :) I definitely think this is one of the best new delis in the Fairfax area. I will be coming back again.

I got the NY-sized reuben, which came out to about ten bucks after tax. That's a lot of money for a damn sandwich, but size-wise, it delivered. Pastrami/corned beef is pretty expensive generally, and this was a filling sandwich. On the other hand, the corned beef they give you on the reuben is REALLY thin cut, and I don't prefer that at all. My sandwich had a half pound of corned beef, but the meat itself is 10.49 a pound, and you can get it cut however you want. I really think that's the way to go. The best news is that they're open until 8:00 pm now. I had been meaning to go here before class for months, but never could carve out a chunk of time, and noticed a flier on the wall saying they're open until 8. If this was still a lunch-only joint, I doubt I'd ever be back, but with dinner hours, I definitely will.

I cane here a 2nd time. As before, in late April, they have "winter hours" that differ from the hours on their Facebook page and their official website. I ordered a turkey & chopped liver on rye to go and drove home. Back home, I opened the package to find a turkey sandwich with no chopped liver. I will not return here again.

Bernie's Deli is one of my new favorite delis in the Fairfax/Tysons/Falls Church area. I am a big deli connoisseur and enjoy trying all the new ones in the area. The sandwiches feel like an actual NY style deli, even if the restaurant doesn't. I really enjoy the Turkey with coleslaw and russian dressing with double meat. The option of having double meat on all the sandwiches for $2 more is a big plus to this restaurant. Sandwiches come with a pickle too, which to me is another big plus. I hate those delis that skimp on the pickle! Parking is ample, service is very friendly, and the seating area is small but nice. Even though my work is a good drive to Bernie's, I will definitely be making the commute several days a week!

I came across Bernie's on Yelp and was very excited to learn that there might be an authentic, or even good, deli in the DC metro area. I have spent some time in NYC over the years for work, and really got used to my pastrami and corned beef sandwiches, so I was hoping this might be something akin to the missing link. Expectations were high. I ordered the reuben and it was good. Maybe I didn't read the menu close enough, or ask Bernie the right questions. Actually, I found the reuben underwhelming from a size perspective. I think I need to go back and get something more substantial.

I drove out to furr-fax to visit a friend and to have lunch. I was in the mood for a sandwich, so we decided to check this place out. Actually I was pretty bias, as it had my brother's name in it... =) We walked in around 2pm on a saturday afternoon and the place wasn't crowded or anything. There's a few tables for diners; a couple tables were taken. There's a little grocery shop portion and the rest of the space is the deli part. I looked at the pretty extensive menu and ordered the French sandiwch, as salami and brie sounded like an interesting combination. I was a wuss and only ordered the smaller portioned sandwich, but they offer a "NY portion" as well, which has a half lb of meat. My sandwich was on french bread and had some mustard on it as well. It was pretty good, though I don't think I liked the brie and salami combo as much as I hoped I would. My friend got the hot pastrami and said it was good too. We also tried the chili which was so so. A nice little sandwich shop. I probably wouldn't mind coming back sometime, if we end up in the mood for sandwiches while in the George Mason University area...

Bernies is Awesome. Born of the famous AU area deli Whagshals in the district, Bernies is the suburban version of a DC institution. The decor is excellent, granite countertops, hard wood floors, and specialty goods on the shelves. The attention to detail here is excellent (this is not exactly so on the most important area, the food, but more on that in moment). From traditional NY Style Jewish Deli offerings to a kicking meatloaf sandwhich the food is excellent from the top down. Fresh baked bread, high end deli meats, and an excellent meat to topping to bread ratio ensures your sandwhich will be filling but will stay together when you eat it. I have had and enjoyed, the Ruben, The Italian, The American Cold Cut, The Turkey Florentine, The Meatball, and The Meatloaf Sandwhich. The deserts are ok but are to expensive for their middle of the road quality. Kids will love the chocolate frogs though. Also, they have a great chip selection of Kettle Brand Chips in flavors like Cheddar Beer, Spicy Thai, Salt and Cracked Pepper, Salt and Vinegar, Green Yogurt, Jamaican Jerk, and others. There are some problems though, the place is new, every time I have been to Bernies, they have screwed up my order in some small way. Understand I have eaten there three to four times a month since they opened in the summer. That is 12 to 15 times and my order has been slightly out of whack each time. It has gotten to the point that it is a running joke amongst my friends. They put odds on what will be wrong with my order. One time they didnt give me extra meat I paid for (they put it on a friends sub instead), one time they didnt cut my sandwhich in half, one time they took my order and didnt have sub buns so they just made my sandwhich on regular bread, they routinely leave the pickles that come with the sandwiches off the order, things little enough that you dont want to complain, but large enough that their accumulated affect is a little disconcerting. The worst experience I had was I went up there with 4 friends and they had 1 sub roll, we waited the 20 mins for the sub buns to bake, and I got the old sub roll. It turns out they made my sandwhich and let it sit while the bread baked for my friends subs. Mine was soggy while my friends was warm and fresh. Bernies food is a must experience, especially if you are disenfranchised by the other sandwhich offerings in farifax like potbelly and appreciate quality meats and fresh food. However, the little things, the small mistakes on every order, the slightly taxed price, and the fact that they close at 7 and arent open on sundays, will keep them from recieving a five star rating from me. In review, the food is five stars, the service and attention to detail is 2 stars. Bring your appetite but bring your wallet as well. A sub sandwhich (NY style), a drink, and a bag of chips, will run you 13-17 bucks. It is worth it, you can make two meals out of a NY style sub. The regular deli sandwhiches are less expensive. Go to Bernies and eat the food, you wont find a better sandwhich in Farifax, just make sure they cut the sandwhich and include the pickle!

I've noticed a few new delis popping up in the area. I saw two 4 star reviews and had to try it. Whenever I go to a deli, I usually start off with a corned beef sandwich with cole slaw and Russian dressing. I got me one of these "NY style" which means extra meat. They have a decent variety of breads and I got my sandwich on a marble rye. Good stuff. They have a pretty good selection here. A bottled drink and the sandwich set me back around 10.50. Not bad compared to other delis in the area. The place doesn't feel like a NY deli. It feels more like a country store and this is a good thing. There's a big lot next to the deli, so parking should not be a problem. I will definitely be back to try some of their other options, especially since I saw something called beer can chicken. Intriguing.

Yum! My mom had mentioned Bernie's a couple times before and recommended I try it. I finally got around to doing so earlier today and I was quite pleased with my meal! I got the Little Italy, which is tomato, mozzarella, and pesto on French with and oil and vinegar. SO good! The mozzarella was cut thick, super fresh, and went perfectly with the pesto. The bread was nice and crusty on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. I was surprised at how big the sandwich was when I first opened it and I really didn't think I'd be able to finish it in one sitting, but it was so good that I actually ate the whole thing! I think I might add chicken to it the next time I go. The bf got the Roast Beef with slaw and Russian dressing on Jewish Rye. He was super satisfied with his sandwich as well. We also got a side of fries. They were hot and crispy, but nothing too special. The sandwiches were the definite stars of our meal today. I am definitely looking forward to going back to try their other stuff!

If I could give it a half star I would. My husband raved about Bernies and begged me to go with him a couple of months ago. I went....ordered the French....and after waiting 15 mins for a basic sandwich was completely underwhelmed. Flavorless...soggy....and lackluster bread ( good bread is an essential for any deli). After all the hubbub I had heard I decided I must have gotten a bad sandwich...so i tried again. Prosciutto sub......completely flavorless....deli counters at Safeway have better prosciutto! Again I tried them for lunch.....Italian sub......slimey, flavorless and completely unappetizing. However for my fourth visit today...it was the last straw. The corned beef sub was on Wonder bread!!! What deli has the nerve to do that? That goes against all I believe in and after paying $7 I am furious. Not to mention they take 15 to 20 mins to prepare your order...so much much for quick grab and go deli. Don't go on a lunch break from work because you'll surely be late getting back. Overall Bernies....you should be ashamed of yourself for feeding the people of Fairfax such low quality "New York" style sandwiches....as a native NYer I am appalled.

I've stopped by Bernie's several times on my way to work. The service is fast and friendly. I love that Bernie is always around - it makes the place seem really inviting. I always order a coffee, but I wish they offered skim milk, as they only have creamer available. It's a good place to stop for coffee and a bagel in the morning!

I absolutely love this place. The sandwhiches are awesome. It's really close to mason and my work. I always get the ham and cheese sandwhich with the russian sauce! Everything is really fresh and delicious! The only reason this place doesn't get 5 stars is because sometimes the wait can be ridiculous, especially around lunch time. After you place your order, it takes about another 15-20 minutes to actually get the sandwich. I tried to call ahead once and just pick up the order but they put me on hold for 10 minutes i ended up just going there to order and waited more. Other than that, it's a great place to eat at.

On a recommendation from a friend I had dinner from Bernie's the other night. Unknowingly I only barely made it there before closing, they close a 7:00, well at least on a Tuesday they do. Being my first time I pestered the man behind the counter about some details of the place and the menu. I asked how long they had been open: about a year and a half, also adding that the location downtown has been in business for 80 years. I asked about the corned beef: they make it in house, and for my first visit he suggested that I go with one of the corned beef sandwiches. I settled on a "175" which was corned beef, slaw, russians dressing, on rye, cold. I've heard this named "the new yorker" in other delis. My cohorts went with a reuben and a ham and cheese(boring). We topped it off with a side of "mom's potato salad". The sandwich was delicious, the meat was perhaps sliced a little thinner than I was expecting but very flavorful. The rye didnt knock my socks off, will try the marble rye next time. Also offered at Bernie's is a wide selection of sweets, soups, sides, and non typical hot dishes. Other than the early closing times, you might find that this place runs closer to the lower $$ range instead of the $ range.

This place is the best deli in northern virginia. Hands down. I spent almost my entire life in the North in Southern Connecticut ( 30 minutes from the city) and this joint is right up there with some of the best delis in the north. Bernies does it right, homemade cornbeef and pastrami, fresh homemade egg and potoato salads and all the breads they use are amazing. The only thing I would like to see there is "real" northern HARD ROLLS!!! You cant have a bacon egg and cheese on anything else. The true hard roll with poppy seeds on the top, not too soft but not too chewy. Throw some butter on them and put them on the grill. Thats the missing link to Bernies bacon egg and cheese. Other than that small detail this shop will get my vote everytime. Cheers guys!!! Keep up the good work!

I do not get the hype for this place. We called in a to go order, they told us 20 minutes. We got there a few minutes before our allotted 20 minutes. The food was not ready yet but they told us we could go ahead and pay, so we did. After paying the cashier yells out to the sandwich jockeys that order 44 (or whatever the actual number was) is here. Fast forward to 20 minutes later, 4 groups have come in since we got there, ordered their food, had it made, received it, and are now eating it. We are still standing around waiting for our food that we called in more than 40 minutes previously. Upon approaching the cashier to ask what is up (for the 2nd time), she acts like she has never seen me before and says "may I help you?". I inquire as to the status of order 44 and she says "it is almost ready". Finally a few minutes later we get out order. From what I can tell the cashier is "Bernie's" wife. We drive home, frustrated, but at least looking forward to our assortment of lovingly crafted corned beef/pastrami/etc... sandwiches. To foreshadow, this is where the place goes from maybe 3 stars to 1. The food was, at best, mediocre. The corned beef and pastrami were bland, the portions were shockingly small given the high prices (more on that later), and the overall product was overall extremely lackluster. As for the prices, they are far too high for the quality. I will glad pay a premium for a premium product. And to add insult to injury when we got home we realized that we were overcharged! In summary, had only one facet of the experience been bad I would have waited on my review and given it another shot, but my one and only trip to Bernie's was a beginning to end bad experience and as such I will never be going back.

I'd bookmarked this place several months ago and finally managed to stop by last week for lunch. I swung in around 11:30 on a Friday and there were quite a few people grabbing take out and one other couple dining in. After you place your order at the counter you can wander around the store and check out all the wine, breads, etc that they sell, or just drool over the dessert case, like I did. I ended up ordering the veggie special, which wasn't too bad for a veggie sandwich. They certainly didn't skimp on any of the ingredients - it was big enough to last me two meals. I think it was about $9 for the sandwich, some chips and a fountain soda. If I worked in the area I bet this would be a frequent lunch spot for me.

i live right across the street from this place making access easy. i often walk here after sleeping in on sat to grab lunch. i've had a few of their sandwiches, but i typically grab their meatloaf sandwich with a good helping of coleslaw and ketchup on it. it always hits the spot. i wouldn't really call bernies a ny deli, but its more than just any regular deli. the prices are reasonable, service is friendly, and like i said its within walking distance!

FINALLY! a good new york deli. hell, even a GOOD deli around mason. FINALLY! my only question is -- why have i only passed it a kajillion times after leaving campus? why? why did i never stop in. well, i finally did -- two days in a row, in fact. the first day. walked in decided to stay true to my sort-of diet im sticking to and ordered a turkey, cheese, lettuce, mustard, tomato sandwich. pretty basic, and boring. but nonetheless fresh and delicious. they use boars head deli meat, which i was happy to see. the reuben was calling my name, "eat mee, F* your diet, you want sauerkraut...eat me." NO! i refused to give in. the soup bar looked good but i was skeptical about how the lentil would compare to my g.grandmothers, so i skipped (for the day). i ate half of my sandwich in store and was about to head to the mall so i bagged the rest up. well, fat-ass me decides that the sandwich was too good not to finish. so 2 stoplights after i left bernies i ripped the bag open and shoved it down s'more. put back in the bag. couldn't resist. 4 traffic lights later, opened it again. this me v. sandwich war lasted for another few stoplights until it won, and i finished my sandwich before i even got to the mall. FAiL. ---- the next day, i had to take my roommate. we had just gotten out of class, hungry in need of food and a nap. well, that reuben-ghost had followed me stoplights, to the mall, class and back, and finally, the next day i gave in. i'm SO glad i did. it was one of the best reubens i have had in the NOVA area. ("haha, i won," the reuben-ghost said) i even got the lentil soup, which was delicious as well. ate 1/2 the reuben for lunch, broiled/warmed the other 1/2 up for dinner. my roommate ordered the chicken salad sandwich. the new hampshire guy behind the counter (so nice, cute, too!) asked if she wanted to wait for the fresh french bread to get out of the oven. nice touch. who wouldnt want a sandwich on warm bread!? but it was still nice he asked. she really enjoyed the chicken sandwich. a non-red meat eater, she even took a bite of my reuben after she saw the look on my face after i took my first bite. (i think the reuben-ghost whispered in her ear, too) let me just sort of wrap up by saying, after we ate bernies we both fell into food-coma with "the itis" and took, what we agreed, was probably one of the best naps ever. THE bernie was also there (on both occasions, actually) and he is the sweetest old man ever. his wife was there too. i introduced myself and he was all, "ally! i'll remember that". i love supporting the small business. they stock DIET dr. browns soda too, how much better can you get? i also know where to go when i want to straight-up blow my diet on delicious homemade rice pudding, cheesecake and other bakery delights. oh shiit, son

I admit it. I have been eating Bernie's sandwiches and food for almost 15 years now. Wagshal's was located across the street from my dentist in N.W. Washington, and we would stop by for lunch whenever we could. Now that he has moved out to Fairfax, I am in heaven. Bernie's sandwiches are outstanding, and the beer can chicken is terrific. I frequently stop by on the way home and pick up some of the curry chicken and sesame noodle salad for lunch the next day in the office.

Love this place! Meatloaf sandwich is to die for, and I don't even like meatloaf. I've only been there twice but both times were delicious. They have a wide variety of meats, chips, bread, and drinks. The only downfall is that it's always busy when I go. Everyone I have encountered is friendly and accomodating. My husband goes here frequently and has never had a bad sandwich or sub as well. I can't wait to try more!

This deli/market recently opened across from GMU(off rt.123) after many months under construction. They offer NY style sandwiches and fresh baked goods- I tried a few of their sandwiches and they were pretty good. a little more expensive than your average deli, though. nice, friendly service and small seating area available inside.

Went to lunch with friends who wanted to get a Reuben. After perusing yelp I found this place which was right down the street from my house and decided to give it a try. When I got there, it was around 1 and the place was packed. I had seen in a review that someone recommended the #175 corned beef sandwich. It was hands down the best corn beef that I've ever had with a fantastic Russian sauce. The NY size that I got was gargantuan with 1/2 lb of meat, I'm surprised that I was able to finish it. Everyone was extremely friendly that worked there. We had to wait around 15 minutes to get the food, but it was definitely worth the wait.

Excellent first experience. Moved to DC area 2 years ago and have been looking for a good sub shop (non Subway/Quiznos) and stumbled on Bernies last week. Not a Philly cheese steak place but the deli sandwiches are tops. On par w/4th St deli in Phila. Pricey but worth the treat so far. We had the "Superior" NY sandwich (roast beef, corned beef, ham & pastrami w/chopped liver & Russian slaw on rye) = 5 stars and the Italian cold cut on french baguette = 3 stars; bread was too hard for my liking and pushed the meat out of the sandwich and how much can an Italian cold cut sandwich change from deli to deli?. We will be back to try another from the menu. Not a flashy place so you may miss it when driving. Stop and ask for directions; you won't be disappointed. Bernie's also has wine and beer to go.

We have been to Bernies sveral times during our afternoon commute home and we have enjoyed the food we got there but nothing compares to Bernies at breakfast. My son and I checked out the breakfast menu and it had all the usual suspects, egg meat and cheese sandwiches, etc. But one item really caught out eye, a sandwich dubbed "The New Yorker'. It was an egg salad sandwich with hot pastrami on toasted rye. We both were not sure about that combo, but we decided to give it a try. We also ordered the corned beef hash after asking if it was homemade or from a can..of course it was homemade and I am pretty sure we insulted him when we asked. It was absolutely wonderful. Back to the sandwich; it was love at first bite. The egg salad was delicious, a little on the "wet" side and not sweet at all, the pastrami was a perfect complement and the toasted rye was not at all soggy. My son and I shared the sandwich and I think that we both coveted the others half. The sandwich is only listed on the breakfast menu, but since they sell all the components all day it is probably available anytime. We also tried the biscuits and gravy, so so to me but my son liked it. It came with two eggs and my son said they were perfectly cooked to over medium. Over all it was fantastic and I can't wait to go back.

I love Bernie's. Great selection of sandwiches, takeout food and desserts, nice people (Bernie is usually there - he's a real person...), and an atmosphere of wanting to do it right. They're not the fastest place around, but if you want your food in two minutes McDonald's is right up the road. "Mom's potato sald" is the BEST!

I'm hooking Bernie up with 3 but he really hasn't earned it yet. I love the location, the look and feel of Bernie's. I love the IDEA of Bernie's. Unfortunately the employees are better suited on the lacrosse field than running a nice deli. They screwed up my order so bad the last two times I've been there that I left without food or paying. Meatball sub? Sorry no meatballs (after waiting 15 minutes). BLT? sorry, no bacon again after a 15 minute wait. And each time I've been there they have had training issues with the cash register or the oven or counting change for other customers. Maybe I should go back and just stay vegan? Don't worry Bernie, I will give you another shot in a few weeks. You've got great potential!

IMO this is not a NY deli nor anything like one. I went there after reading a glowing review in the W. Post. Went at 12:30 and it took almost 45 minutes to get my sandwich. I ordered a Reuben (no russian dressing, please!). the meat had the appearance and texture of shaved meat in a ziplock bag you'd buy in the supermarket. The bread was not Jewish rye (I saw the loaves up on a shelf). It was more like a regular loaf of bread with some rye flavor and the texture was soft and squishy. and the bread did not feel or taste grilled as it should be. However...I did discover something wonderful that day. Their Black & White Cookies are the real thing (i.e., not little cakes as so many around here seem to be but more cooky...but not totally crunchy...delicous flavor too). So Five Stars for the B&W cookies. The only deli that serves food that reminds me of NY is the Celebrity Deli (and we live near chutzpah but as they say, "meh").

I am still a fan of the food. I am not a fan at all of these new Groupon offers. Buy Two $10 groupons which forces me to drive to this diner TWICE to take advantage of the full value of the groupons. It's just not worth spending the money for 2 people and figure out the crazy math, which these groupons force me to do.

Got this on a whim and ill definitely be back! I got the ruben & homemade chili. The ruben was phenomenal! One of the best rubens I have yet to try around here. The chili was good, i personally like spicy chili but I would get this again on a cold day. Hubs got pastrami special ny style ( extra meat) and the dill potato salad. His sand which id say was lacking the double meat which wasn't worth the $4 extra dollars. The potato salad we will probably pass on next time. The best part of this place was desserts! The chocolate chip cookies and carrot cake were soo good! Althought pre wrapping the carrot cake took alot of moisture out of it. Overall good food , really nice friendly people working there we will be back.

$16 for a turkey sandwich, a medium fountain drink, and a bag of chips. This is kind of getting out of hand here, Bernies. I ordered a special, the "turkey thing" that came with turkey, stuffing, gravy (waaayyyyy too much gravy) and cranberry on french bread. The combo(?) was supposed to include a medium drink for $10.95 but I'm pretty sure I saw the cashier ring up a sandwich, a drink, and a bag of chips that totaled $16. Not sure if she was oblivious to the specials of the day or if the computer printed it out wrong or..?? Nonetheless I didn't get what I paid for. Anyway, onto the turkey thing. The bread, per usual, was outstanding. The turkey was juicy but on the drier side of that. There was waaayyyyy too much gravy on the sandwich and not enough cranberry. I only ate half and was not interested in bringing the other half home. I will say this place gets 5 stars for the chicken salad on croissant but that's the only thing.

If you follow my posts, you know I love prosciutto and the prosciutto sub at Bernie's was just like heaven! The meat and bread are so fresh and it was piled so high I could barely take a bite. The staff is super friendly, the subs are huge, and the price is right. My only regret is that I didn't leave room for one of the tempting baked goods.

Bernie's is popular with people who live and work nearby. My party traveled a bit farther, as we had a Groupon ($20 for $12). We were not disappointed. On both occasions, we were satisfied with the items we ordered, the service was friendly and efficient, and it was a quiet environment. Tables were kept clean, and they have a recycling bin. The sandwiches we tried were all tasty.

The only thing I really liked about this place was the ambience and the girl at the counter rocking fuchsia lipstick and a granny-chic (yes, it's a thing) cardigan. The rest of the experience was a total bust. The salads in the deli case (egg, macaroni, potato, etc) looked really sad and old. The dessert case was almost impressive, but it does take more than a slice of defrosted Junior's to turn me on. However, a good Napoleon is one of my favorite desserts, so I clapped onto it immediately and happily forked over my $4 expecting heaven. Alas, it was an absolute aberration!! No, just no I also ordered one of their "signature" sandwiches on marbled rye. It was the #175, corned beef, slaw and Russian dressing for a little over $8. While not totally revolting, I also didn't make it past the first half (and it was the smaller half) of the sandwich. Oh, and it doesn't come with anything other than a skinny dill pickle spear. Strike two, Bernie's! You can't be a NY style deli and screw up corned beef and napoleons. Oh, and I waited three times as long for the salad I ordered for a colleague as I did for my sandwich. Upon seeing that it was a pre-made and pre-packaged sort of deal, I just sorta threw up my hands. Apart from having wanted to try this place for some time, and I'm glad I did just to satisfy my curiosity, I'll not be returning. Yes, Chutzpah, I'm coming home, baby. I should never have doubted your superiority in the overpriced NY Style Deli department for Fairfax county.

I frequent Bernie's a few times a week with co-workers and we love the food and the service. The London Broil is beyond fantastic and I am also a giant fan of the make your own sandwich option. All of the people who work in this establishment are friendly and it feels like a very small town establishment. Lunch time is when the place tends to be packed so get there a little early.

this place is ok, it's kinda expensive. they got my order wrong, and it wasn't anything great. maybe I'll try something other then the chicken salad. they took a while getting the sandwhich out too. I think I paid like 8-9 for a full sandwhich ( not even that big) and it didn't even come with chips. maybe the other things are delicious and worth it bc this place gets packed on a saturday or Sunday afternoon.

This is a hidden gem thats tucked away near George Mason University. I found out about this place from Livingsocial and decided to give it a try. Who doesn't love a good ol' sub? When you walk in, there's two lines. The one furthest from the door is where you order but then you move up closer to the door and thats where you pay. Don't get it confused or you'll be standing in the wrong line the whole time. My dad and I walked in here around 12:30 and it wasn't crowded but BOOM...10 minutes later, there's a crowd of people and not enough seats. Theres probably about 15 tables, and all of them were taken. Got there in the nick of time! In the back of the store, they sell wine, olive oil, drinks and some meats. I am offically obsessed with a drink there called Mash with ripe mangos and blood orange. It's a low calorie sparkling water that tastes amazing. They have alot of drinks I have never seen before too. There menu is extensive and tons of options. You can even make your own sandwich or pick one with an option to double your meat. I actually ordered the Super BLT without tomatoes. Of course, it was good, its like 3 inches of bacon! My dad wanted roast beef but they ran out! How?! It was only noon! So he just decided on the hot pastrami which he said was pretty good. The sandwiches are generous sizes but pricing is high especially for subs. But everything had fresh ingredients with high quality meats. So I think its worth it. Will be back soon to try some of their other subs.

Bernie's was the GO TO DELI for me. Recently my level of frustration has increased. Yes the Corn Beef, Pastrami, and other fresh house-made/prepared meats (no cheap cold cuts here) are fantastic. There is not arguing that the quality of the meats surpasses that of ANY DELI anywhere in the Fairfax/Oakton/Annandale area. So that is still wonderful. The cookies get my baker mothers approval as well. The price is not an issue. Quality and quantity of meat on the sandwiches definitely negates this argument for me. I don't even bother with sandwiches at other places due to the cheap processed cold cuts they use. My problem with Bernie's repeats. The Super Double is my favorite. It remains a challenge for the staff. When the man of the house is working and taking orders it is perfect. EVERY OTHER PERSON seems to screw up my order. Order: Super Double, combination meat, on a baguette. Last week: Super double, combination meat, on the regular rye bread. This week: Super double, CORNED BEEF ONLY!?!?!, on a baguette. Two suggestions to the staff: 1) LISTEN TO THE CUSTOMER. ASK and VERIFY. If you don't understand, ASK FOR CLARIFICATION!!! 2) To the lady working there now for a number of months, SMILE and be pleasant. Your ruining my appetite. An expensive sandwich, worth every penny, IF AND ONLY WHEN DONE TO MY ORDER!

Overall I was very disappointed. The ambiance indoors is pretty good. However, the woman who took my order at the counter didn't know their own menu. I was also disappointed to find out they only have one type of cream cheese (I was specifically looking for a bagel). I asked for sesame bagel, toasted, and later discovered they didn't even toast it. The bagel itself wasn't bad, lack of toasting notwithstanding. The coffee was average. I would not go back, especially considering a bagel and coffee cost me more than $5 - yikes!

A month later I dined at Bernie's to try the infamous corn beef sandwich. The corn beef lived up to expectations as it was juicy and the associated components match up perfectly (melted cheese and sauerkraut). I also noticed they did not over due the sandwich with mustard. For a side dish, I selected the egg salad which tasted average. Next time I'll probably skip the side dishes and just order desert ! Bernie's bakes a wide variety of pastries in house all of which look amazing ! This time around, I felt like a pro ordering at the correct counter, grabbing my drink, and then presenting my ticket order, groupon, and cash to pay. If I can do it, you can do it too at Bernie's. staff is straight rude. if you order a sandwich within a half hour of closing they will give you hell for being there when they already have limited hours. food is good but slightly overpriced and on the weekend expect to wait a bit for your order.

I used to live in California, where local deli's are rare, but fast food thrives. I LOVE searching for local deli's on the East Coast, especially in downtown areas and near colleges, and discovering rare gems. Bernie's is right near GMU, and I popped in for lunch, had a great sandwich and some macaroni salad. They have an olive oil bar, a nice wine selection, and maybe 8 tables to enjoy your lunch at. Simple and good, but nothing stood out. Definitely worth a try if you're local, though. (I'm not)

Food was above average....got take out and paid cash..they could not provide a receipt for cash sales. I would have liked to see it because I felt lunch was overpriced. Also, got a salad to go and had to eat it with my hands as no utensils were place in bag.. Could have been my fault... It was my first visit to the deli..

I have been meaning to try out this place for a long time. It is located very close to my house and today I was able to meet a friend for lunch. There were many different sandwich and fresh salad options. I chose the cold Italian sandwich and it was delicious. They had a variety of different potato chips and nice cold beverages. There's both indoor and outdoor seating. We decided to sit outside, but it was a little loud since it was next to 123 with lots of traffic. I would like to go back so that I can try their bagel with lox and cream cheese. I also would like to try some of their fresh salads. The service was courteous and fast. The only thing that I wish they might consider changing, would be that they open earlier than 9 AM. It would be nice to be able to pick up a breakfast sandwich before work, but their hours don't allow that.

Just had a Bernie's pastrami sandwich and I am in seventh heaven. Hot mustard and sour kraut made this the best. The pickles are out of this world. Place is owned by same folks who own Wegshels in Mass ave in DC. Highly recommend!!!

I really don't understand all the great reviews. The potential for being good is there, but it certainly wasn't being acted upon the day we went. The pastrami sandwich was thin - what self respecting deli makes a thin pastrami sandwich? It was a terrible value. Next time I'll go to Chutzpah and get the real deal. Also, no cel-Ray. Just change the name to "sandwich shop" already.

Just graduated from Mason and I already regret not eating at Bernie's more. Just a walk away from campus but students really don't frequent the place as much as you'd think. Totally laid back deli with lots of drink, chip, and dessert options. Best sandwich I had while living in Fairfax. Definitely recommend the turkey with slaw and Russian dressing (heated up of course) if you're on the fence about ordering. Everything a deli is supposed to be.

2.5 stars My main complaints about Bernie's is 1) the price and 2) the way the food is served. We came for breakfast and got the daily special which was grilled pastrami. This special was $11.99 (comes with a soda)!! and it was TINY....good thing we had a groupon. I must admit, it was quite tasty but definitely not worth the 11.99 price considering the portion size. Dining in, I would expect some plates, knife, fork, etc. They have tables and everything. When our omelette came out, it was served in a foam box, which instantly made everything soggy. The omelette was ruined!!! Ugggh. When I asked for a plate, the guy behind the counter goes "we don't have any". HUH?! Really??? I saw they had foam trays behind the counter so I just asked for one of those. Terrible presentation. Another small note, it took FOREVER for our food to come out and the place had 3 customers max. Not sure what took so long but I can only imagine what it's like during the lunch time rush.....

This place never disappoints me. *Overall review: I come here about once a month atleast. I usually order their make-your-own sandwich with roast beef, avocado, horseradish, marble rye, honey mustard. Minor price note: Avocado costs 1.50 extra, but they're definitely fresh. It's definitely worth getting it. Ive never tried their potato salads or other sides. ----------- Price: ~same as Chipotle/Subway. (Why even bother going to subway if this place exists?) Parking: Small, but there's always a space. People come and go quickly. Workers: Friendly staffs. I always see the same cashier. He's very honest and funny haha. :D

Out of the delis in the area, Bernie's is one of the better ones. The location is a bit hidden, past downtown Fairfax just before George Mason University. The parking is ample, but the inside space is a little cramped. They could open it up a little better if they took out the olive oil bar and other useless elements no one seemed to be using. The ordering system is quite confusing and inefficient. They have a line at a register sort of blocking the door when you walk in, but that's not where you order. There's another register on the other side where you order. Then you get a ticket to take all the way back to the other register to check out. Seems like a waste of paper and sort of just doesn't make any sense. A minor annoyance. I ordered the Hummus & Sprouts sandwich on pumpernickel, but they were out of sprouts. So instead, they gave me spinach. I added avocado, which they gladly did -- for an extra $1.50. The food didn't take that long. They have a large wall of refrigerated drinks, but I prefer fountain soda, so I went for that. Their fountain machine is pretty old-school and limited in its options. The atmosphere, as I mentioned above, is old-world and cozy, but cramped. The layout could use some work. There's a table scrunched right up against the soda machine and where you get napkins, condiments, etc. You basically have to climb over the people who are sitting there. The floor also has a big hump in the middle like the building was the victim of a fault line or something. Weird. My sandwich was fresh and very good, though I was a bit disappointed in how thinly the bread was sliced and in how thin it was overall given I paid more for it than I would have a footlong at Subway stuffed with as many toppings as I want. I also tried the barbecue pulled chicken sandwich, which was way better. It had a great sauce, and the coleslaw wasn't overpowering. It added just the right amount of crunch. I don't really think Bernie's is the bee's knees. But the staff is squared-away and friendly, and it's not a bad place to grab a bite. It just wouldn't ever be a go-to for me, especially for the prices.

Bernie's has so much potential, it's really a shame. I went to school at AU and remember what a treat it was to get lunch at Wagshal's - Bernie's is just not the same. I just brought home 3 sandwiches. Italian sub for my wife who loved it, turkey for the kids - ok, but the lettuce was actually a bit brown. For me - a corned beef on rye that was quite small for the price - I was disappointed . So, beside the issues with the food itself, why the low rating: 1. Ordering system is bizarre - add a some signage 2. The staff is either a) hung-over or b)lazy gen Y'er who just don't care - lazy at best. Seriously the cashier was wearing a ski cap side and literally did not say a word to me other than my total $26.99 (which is expensive for 3 sandwiches). 3. The inside is frankly sad - the shelves are all empty and you get the impression they are about to go out of busy 4. The display cases of deli salads looked like they were at least a week old - gross. 5. The pasty case look ok - but it's in a terrible location right by the door. Bernie, if you are interested in selling let me know.

Food was minimal, bland, and overpriced. I can see why this place was empty when we showed up and only one couple showed up by the time we left. I also paid 3.99 extra for double meat (New York style) on my pastrami sandwich and it had just as much meat as the turkey sandwich. When I talked to the waitress, she said that is what extra pastrami is on the sandwich. :0 I can see why this place is a regular on groupon and don't expect it to be around much longer..

For whatever reason, Bernie's isn't the first thing that comes to my mind when I want to grab a sandwich. The way it sits on the street corner there, its kind of hidden away and not very memorable. But every time I come in, I'm blown away and wish I came more. I had the Mikey's special: Turkey, muenster, peppers, tomato, and lettuce. It was SO GOOD! ALL of the ingredients tasted very fresh, which for a deli, is unusual. The french roll it came on was perfectly made, a good amount of meat (no skimping here). Nothing to complain about at all. Only thing is it is a bit more pricey than the average deli, but it is definitely worth it. $2-3 extra for fresh, top-quality ingredients that will blow you away!

I grew up on Long Island and I worked in a popular deli when I was younger. I have high expectations when I walk into other delis and I was let down tremendously today. - The ordering system they have in place is inefficient and confusing - The flow of the deli is not ideal for the type of work environment - There is a ton of space being under utilized to the advantage of the business to operate more efficiently - The wait for 2 sandwiches was about 50 minutes. It was busy but not that busy. The amount of volume of customers in the place should not equate to a 50 minute wait on 2 simple sandwiches. - While I was waiting for my sandwiches I came up with multiple ways to increase work area efficiency for the deli, the ideas were just flowing lol - The food was average, potato salad was a disappointment. - The employee working the register didn't make much eye contact with the customers. I witnessed a few complaints to him and he didn't make eye contact once, I guess it is the little things that count when trying to please a customer I would love to give this place a chance and it certainly looks like it has made a thumbprint in the area but they really need to work on a few things such as - Hire more staff - There are many things to consider with the inside of the deli with the placement of counter, range, coolers, walk-in, etc. These things have a negative effect on the flow of the deli no and need to be addressed. I will tell it how it is, I hope you can use this and make your place better because I bet your place is a hit in the area. Kind Regards, Adam

The food is good, but at 9:30 am on Saturday they were out of bagels, English muffins and croissants. The music was also too loud to enjoy present conversation.

Such a great place to have in Fairfax City. Related one way or another to DC landmark Wagshal's Deli. So much of the food here in Fairfax is mediocre and meh. Bernie's makes excellent, truly deli-style sandwiches with high quality breads meats and garnishes. Everything is fresh and in a clean welcoming environment. This is THE sandwich place in fairfax I've lived here 15 years and can't think of a better sandwich shop in the area.

The sandwiches are a bit pricey, but they're the best I've had in the area. The shop gets busy during lunch hours so it's best to call ahead. Try the chicken salad - you won't be disappointed.

Sandwiches are very good and staff are friendly, but they lose three stars for not honoring their published hours. Twice I have driven out -- from the center of Arlington no less -- to find them closed 15 and 10 minutes before their posted closing time. The first time they let me in; the second time they did not.

I went here with my mom for lunch on a weekday. I heard it could get pretty busy during lunch rush due to be it being near downtown Fairfax and George Mason University. But we didn't have to wait long. They have a wide variety of meats, breads, and cheeses. I created my own sandwich while my mom got a pastrami sandwich. We shared an order of onion rings. Everything was very good and the staff was very friendly. I loved finding an actual deli in the area.

Love this place! Mentioned my no milk health issue and they willingly accepted the challenge to take my favorite sub and make it new for me to eat. Fantastic service, delicious food. Well- worth the visit!

Having grown up on Long Island I also have high expectations. For the DC area this place is maybe a little above average, but in Corned Beef cities like NY and Cleveland this place would have closed down years ago. They use small bread and pile all of the meat in the middle so it looks real big when cut. In NY and Cleveland I am lucky if I can finish a 1/2 sandwich. I can easily get through one of Bernies and not be full. Also in the other cities they don't have to reheat their Corned Beef...at lunchtime the automatic slicers are going all the time to keep up with the demand.
