The upstairs at Boylan was hosting three separate department functions: College of Nursing, Engineering, and Chemistry recruiting weeks. I swindled my way to become friends with each group, got their food which was horrificly inedible, but what do you expect from a college town sports bar. If you go here, you must have expectations. This is an excellent sports bar with great drink specials (I had $2 domestic bottles all night). That is how to play it. Eat somewhere else and come here after.

A nice local spot that offers a quality burger at a reasonable price. They have a bunch of appetizing, pre-designed burgers but they also give you a build your own option. If you build your own, you fill out an awesome little scantron form and have tons of options for every single part of your burger. I went with a beef patty, wheat bun, sriracha mayo, Boylan's sauce, raw onions, mushrooms, and Virginia ham ($1 extra). It was a deliciously juicy burger and the fries balanced with it really well. Next time I go in I'll definitely make an even more deluxe burger and sample some of the beers.

Visited here one night for what I though would be a delicious, exotic Burger. What I ended up getting was something I probably could have very easily replicated at home. The bun was frankly the highlight of the meal. I was never asked how I would have liked my Burger cooked (medium) so I was disappointed when it was anything less. The meat was less than flavorful. It seemed as though this was a situation where the expectation was that the condiments were going to satisfy my craving for flavor. I like to drink water with my dinner. I don't like the taste I'd my food to be masked my soda or beer. Both my wife and I were immediately hit with the nostalgia of childhood summers and drinking from the hose when we sipped our waters. Because the water tasted like it was a from a rubber hose, or as my wife put it "it tastes like fertilizer". Disappointment all in all.

Came mid-afternoon with a group to let loose with some beers and snacks. Nachos are pretty good. Didn't have any burgers but they LOOK good. Fries are not so great. Mozzarella sticks are ok. Kind of overpriced though. A pitcher of Bud was $8. I don't know if it was because we were the only people in there on a Thursday early afternoon, but the guy serving/bartending for us was super nice and even gave us half-priced pitchers since we bought so many and was there for so long. He also made us some delicious shots. Still not sure if it was worth the tab that we rang up though. Great place to hang out with a group though.

Decent food. I don't know what was wrong with our service but our food came out cold. I got the Midsummers salad and it was decent. I enjoyed the environment but it took way too long for our food to come out. I would not come back to this place. The location and environment would attract lots of college students but the price and quality of food would not keep them around long. I really did not enjoy my time here.

So disappointed ! Poor service is a kind way to describe what we experienced . That is only compounded by an average burger at best! We've had better burgers and for cheaper at Five Guys! The fries were a frozen Arby's style curly fry for an extra $2. And if the service and good weren't aggravating enough, we were pestered by flies the entire time!! Too many other great burger joints to waste your time here.

Love the build-your-own burger and the consistently amazing service here. Whenever friends from home come to visit me, I always take them here first for a filling burger and some fried potato bits. The academic theme, from the names of the burgers to the scantron to the list of beers, is pretty clever, and this space is great for big groups. The first floor has some smaller tables, while the upstairs has a whole lounge area dedicated to a few hours of guzzling beers. Ask for a sample of their Boylan sauce (one ingredient is maple syrup, so ... if you're not a fan of sweet sauces, steer clear) and pour it over your burger, fries, and deep fried potato salad. I don't really like the English muffin as the bread base for the burger, because it falls apart so easily and then I spend the rest of the evening engulfed in a mountain of stained napkins. Also: thanks Boylan for broadcasting the Olympics on nearly all of your flat-screen TVs. Watching the various reactions to the diving performances made for endless entertainment.

I give this restaurant two stars because the burgers truly are absolutely delicious. The service on the other hand, is lackluster at best. Dining with a large group for a friend's birthday, our server decided that texting was far more important than serving. We sat amazed as drinks remained empty for 15-20 minutes at a time. At the end of the night she walked up, handed us a bill, and requested that we split it ourselves because she hadn't done so. Mind you, food is delivered by name.....she came up $15 short even after everything we ordered had been accounted for. At this point a very rude man came up, nearly slammed the bill onto the table and said that, someone needed to just bite the bullet and pay for It.I will NEVER eat here again.

The BEST hamburger I've ever had in my entire life served with amazing sweet potato fries and an ice cold beer while relaxing on the patio. Heavenly!

The food has gone downhill in the last few years. This used to be one of my favorite spots but the last few times I have eaten here the service has been awful and the food just average. Literally every time I create my own burger they get it wrong. How does that even happen? And when I told the server she just blew me off.

Hearing of their great burgers, I've been wanting to try them. I got my chance today but I have mixed feelings about the whole place. Although our waitress was courteous and polite, it took her about twenty five minutes to come to our table to get our order. I ordered the model UN burger, my husband ordered the varsity while my son created his own. When our burgers arrived, my burger and my husband's were cold. They seemed like they were precooked and just reheated but not heated all the way through. We both thought the taste was good but they could have been great had they been warm enough. My son liked his and said that his was hot. They got the fries right too. They were hot and yummy. Overall, was not very impressed.

I went here for a student event last weekend, and I loved the place! I'm tossing out the extra fifth star on account of the stellar service at Boylan, despite being jam packed on a Friday night. The food was good, the drinks were nice and strong, and the place was very spacious and comfortable. Boylan is definitely a great place to come with a big group.

I got the Western Civ burger, I enjoyed the fact they have organic meat, it has a taste that is not comparable to traditional ground beef. The burger was great and the service was adequate. I would certainly eat hear again to get another burger.

I'm all about a medium-rare burger, and figured a professed "burger bar" would be able to cook a good burger. There were three of us at the table. Two of us ordered medium-rare, and one ordered medium. All of the burgers where shoe leather. The waitress was apologetic, and offered to get me another burger. I thanked her, but then she returned with another well done burger. Not a hint of pink. It took her fifteen minutes to come back and check on us. I sent it back again, and the third was still shoe leather. The waitress took offered a fourth, but at that point my friends had already finished eating. They did cover my burger, but when I asked for the manager I was denied, and the waitress was so nervous and meek that I couldn't be but too mean. I've worked 10 years in upscale customer service, and the service and food I received at Boylan was horrible. Not to mention my best friend got food poisoning from her burger. She called the next day, and was offered a gift certificate... Why would she ever go back? Very disappointing.

This review is for their Sunday BRUNCH. It does not apply to their regular menu, which I actually think is pretty good (4 stars for the vegan burger bowl). I asked the waitress what she would recommend for BRUNCH. She suggested the Huevos Rancheros. The presentation was pretty pathetic (1 star). It looked like bad cafeteria food. And the hash browns were basically just clumpy cheese slop. I sent the food back because it was cold. How do you make people wait more than 45 minutes and then serve food that is not hot?? My fellow diners' food wasn't hot either, but they felt bad about sending it back. Luckily the waitress was nice about reheating the food. Once the food came out hot, it was OK. The pork was tasty. But the "cheese" was gloopy fake cheese product that looked like hollandaise sauce. And the egg was overcooked. It didn't seem like restaurant food. It reminded me of a recipe you'd use at a summer camp to teach kids out to cook. Very disappointing.

Boylan uses grass fed beef (super A+) and sources all of their buns from the local bakery, Albemarle Baking Company. The burgers are huge and delicious. If you don't like one of their pre-selected combinations, you can "build your own" using a scan-tron sheet (remember scantron??) The only one I've ever had that was "meh" was their veggie burger -- only because it fell apart, was difficult to eat, and was kind of bland. The fries (both sweet potato and normal) are excellent and are sprinkled with rough cut sea salt. I would stay away from the fried pickles though -- they have a bit too much breading on them. All of the sodas are served in biodegradable plastic cups as well. The plethora of flat screened TVs also makes this a good place to hang out and watch the game.

Our first food stop on a recent weekend trip to Charlottesville. We were super hungry and in the mood for burgers, and the local, organic beef they tout was a big selling point for us. Ambience was fine - typical bar and burger joint, nice booth by the window, noisy but not in an obnoxious or annoying way, a bit of an industrial feel with some cool murals (Rushmore!). Service was very good and the food came out fast - no complaints there. Prices are great, and we liked the option to build your own burger for less than $10. The problem was the burger itself. It was pretty much devoid of flavor. We both got the Model UN (beef, cheese, avocado, black bean salsa, lettuce, tomato and sour cream). I realize avocado and sour cream are not the most flavorful items, but if the beef itself were savory enough, then that should have shown even more without overpowering toppings. Bland and boring. Perhaps some of the other burgers there are better, but again, the beef itself did nothing for us and being that it's the same beef on all burgers, I'd be surprised if it was simply our particular sandwich that was lacking. You could certainly tell it was good quality beef, though. Curly fries were fine. Maybe we just ate there on a bad day, but since we don't live in Charlottesville, we're not likely to give it a second chance if we go back since there are so many other places to try.

I know most people come here for burgers- and I wish we had tried some- but we opted for a Sunday brunch. Both of us had ordered the Boylan Mary (bloody mary) and they were both well done- extra spicy, how we like it! Then our dishes were Garden Benedict (very well done- I liked the salsa and chiptole sauce!). The grits that came with were rich, but not overly so. The other dish was the Eggs and Toast with the housebrowns. Simple, but very well done. And the housebrowns- I wish I had ordered them! The atomsphere of this place was great, for kids, college students and anyone else interested. You don't feel rushed (on a Sunday morning) and you can enjoy a game on TV or just catching up with friends. Lots of space to sit, so you don't feel like everyone is on top of you.

Oh Boylan, how I love thee. Having a great burger joint in my backyard is now a necessity thanks to Boylan. I don't know how I survived without it. For less than $10 you can make your own burger consisting of organic angus beef from Virginia farms, cheese, a sauce and three toppings. You can add premium toppings for just a little extra. Things like muenster cheese, tzatziki sauce, fried eggs, avocado, roasted red peppers and fried green tomatoes are at your disposal when creating a burger. You can also opt for a turkey burger or veggie burger if beef isn't your thing. Every burger comes with delicious curly fries which can be changed to sweet potato fries for $1. There are also burgers on the menu already created by Boylan. And if a burger isn't what your looking for, you can choose from their salads, sandwiches and appetizers. Boylan offers a Sunday brunch that looks to have expanded since I last went, so I can't comment fully on that. I docked Boylan one star for not serving a full-menu on days of home football games. I understand it gets extremely busy, but taking away the reason why people come to your restaurant - the create your own burger - isn't the greatest idea. And because I've seen it mentioned in other reviews, you can have your burger cooked however you please. You just need to ask.

Catered towards college students, great food, awful service, been here multiple times, have yet to have a good experience here.

Avoid this place. Stopped in on a Sunday to watch baseball and have a couple of beers. Stood at the door for a few minutes and despite the present of several waiters and bartenders no one greeted us or offered a table or service. We picked out own table and they continued to ignore us for a few more minutes so I walked to the bar with a credit card in hand to start a tab. Even that failed to get any attention at a place that wasn't very busy and had 5 staff working on trying to change a channel. Service sux and I've had brunch here a separate time, which wasn't great either.

As a self-proclaimed red meat snob (grassfed, please) I was super skeptical of going to a bar for a "good" burger and was *served*. The burgers at Boylan are the best I've had in a while; this is my new go-to burger joint. They let you build your own burger so you get exactly what you want. I will be going back (in fact, I want one right now!)

  • Anna B.

The best burger I have tasted in Charlottesville! I build my own when I go, and top it with bleu cheese and onions. When you are craving a burger, this is the place to go. I have never eaten here at the dinner hour, but understand that this place becomes quite the party after a certain hour. If you are looking for that, then this is one of the most popular spots on the corner. However, if you are like me and prefer a more intimate bar setting, I would recommend going here for lunch, particularly when the weather is nice and they open the large windows.

You know a place is great when you are in town for three days and you find yourself going there TWICE. Such is the case with Boylan Heights. Fantastic house-made vegetarian burger (not such an easy feat), made from protein-rich quinoa. Crispy and sweet - but not too greasy - sweet potato fries. Perfectly dressed caesar salad - with vegetarian dressing, no less! Nice vibe, good people. Great music. Good location with open feel and outdoor seating.... winning!

Service here is consistently terrible. You can get a decent burger anywhere else on the corner, so don't torture yourself with a waitress who takes 20 minutes to take your order and doesn't doesn't give you your check for 15+ minutes after you ask for it.

I went to UVA undergrad and this place used to be called Orbitz which was an uber-sketchy pool hall. We stopped by Boylan Heights for brunch/lunch on a Sunday morning and it was delightful! Downstairs was pretty loud and cramped for space but upstairs was quiet and had tons of tables. The service was slow and were the food and company not so wonderful, I'd probably be really annoyed, but the rest made up for it. I got a Boylan Mary to start and it was SO divine! The celery was the biggest piece of celery I've ever seen. Seriously, it was enormous, thank goodness I like celery... But the drink was salty and the perfect post-night out beverage. I got the Room 121 (101? I'm not sure what the number is) burger and it was the most delicious thing ever! Oh my goodness! Yum! Our whole group was really pleased, having come in with that "oh, it's just burgers" mentality. The loaded tots are good, the curly fries are amazing and the drinks have enormous celery. Two thumbs up. Until it gets closed by the time I go back to Cville again.

visit on 6/29/2011 I like this place. Good burgers - I've tried beef, turkey, and vegetarian, and they're all good. Good beer - not huge, but good selection of local and regional beers with great happy hour pricing. Good space - a variety of really great spaces to hang out including upstairs lounge area, good bar, and great outdoor patio space to have a beer on a warm summer evening. This place just has a lot of really good things going for it.

Every thing from the bread to the meat to the produce to the beer is from local merchants around Charlottesville. Build your own or choose from their delish burger combos or you can build your own using an academic scantron to complete your order. Good selection for the kiddos. Great music. Probably quite busy when school is in session. You can even get tater tots.

  • Taylor S.

Honestly, the food took over 35 minutes to come out and they weren't busy at all. The server also had a terrible attitude and messed our order up once it came to the table and then made it seem like it was our fault. The nachos were really good though, so I will give three stars for that.

    (3)
  • Caitlin L.

For the portion size and, most of all, the quality, the price is great! I'm amazed that grass-fed beef, local stuff, custom burgers, etc are at or around $10. I docked a star because one fairly quiet Sunday when I was having brunch there, I ordered a cocktail that was only so-so. Also the atmoshpere can get a tad loud and raucous, but that's probably what most of the folks who go there are looking for anyway :) I still give it two thumbs up.

We went there at night. It was really, really dark inside. So dark that it was almost impossible to read the menu. That aside, the atmosphere was nice. Kind of an upscale casual. Quite a few students were there, which is to be expected during the school year. I had a made-to-order hamburger. It was pretty cool to be able to fill out a bubble-sheet with all the stuff I wanted on the burger. They have a ton of things to choose from for a burger. My wife had the fried pickle chips as an appetizer, and she said they were awesome. I'm not a fan of pickles. The burger was an above-average restaurant burger. I found it to be a little too greasy for me, but that might have been due to the fact that they really loaded it with cheese. Next time I go, I'll leave the cheese off. Service was very good, and the bar seemed efficient. They had Yuengling on tap, which was good for me. Seemed like that had a respectable selection of beer.

    (3)
  • Albert L.

I'd recommend them put the bun on the grill for a little bit, to give them a slightly harder texture, but mainly to prevent them from getting soggy from the toppings that are placed in the burger. Overall, all the burgers that my table ordered were well received, but the amount of fries was underwhelming. Lastly, service was good. because we didn't really order that many items, I can't judge how well they do with larger parties/orders. i will definitely come back again if i pass by c-ville.

I went to this place years ago when it was called Orbitz. Ever since Orbitz closed down and Boylan Heights opened in it's place, I haven't really felt the need to check it out. I haven't eaten red meat for over a decade so it didn't really seem to be a place I should try. A couple of months ago my new doctor put me on a special restricted diet to help improve my thyroid disease, and in the pamphlet he gave me he listed Boylan Heights as having an amazing veggie burger made from quinoa. It's the burger on the menu called "The Valedictorian." Last week I went to check it out. It really was good! I got the sweet potato fries as a side dish. I probably won't be eating much else on the menu but when I am craving a veggie burger for lunch, I will be heading here.

    (4)
  • Suparna C.

For a place that advertise its 'handcrafted veggie burgers', their veggie burger is one of the most disappointing and flavorless ones I've ever had (I had it as part of the model UN). On top of that, the sides were also pretty charred. The fries were also pretty mediocre. While I can't speak for their other burgers, I strongly recommend against their vegetarian burgers.

We ate here on the spur-of-the-moment because Mellow Mushroom was CLOSED the day after Christmas. To our delight, everything we ordered was delicious, including some new-to-us items like pork wings and fried potato salad. Burgers were terrific and service very attentive (thank you, Bailey!) . Glad we stopped here and would definitely come back.

Simply the best burger I've ever had! And the loaded tarter tots are my new guilty pleasure. Had the most delightful server too :)

I came here a lot in the second half of 2011, before moving away, because my vegetarian partner loves their veggie burgers. Heck, I'm an omnivore and *I* really like the veggie burgers. I always had a good burger and the service was always just fine, and it's nice to be able to go to a beer-and-burger joint with a vegetarian when they *also* get a good meal.

Fun, college themed restaurant with excellent burgers. I love creating my own burger on a scantron sheet with tons of options, and I have never had a bad combination! I love that they use sweet pickles instead of dill, btw. I tried the fried potato salad, and while it sounds interesting, it was just potato salad with a crispy skin, nothing too exciting. Next time I will try the sweet potato fries. We tried the s'mores the first time we went, which was a mistake. Stick with the burgers if you come here.

  • Christin C.

This was a great place to hang out when I lived in Charlottesville! They serve grass fed organic beef which is awesome! They have already put together burgers or you can make your own. I usually made my own but I have tried the Green eggs and ham and it was awesome! Burger on an english muffin with pesto and ham and a fried egg. So good! They have sweet potato fries and regular fries. I would recommend getting some of the burger sauces on the side to dip your fries in. They have a downstairs with tables and a bar, then upstairs they have a bar, some tables, some couches and pool tables. The service can be slow if it's crowded, but I never minded because the burgers were so good and the staff was friendly. I am a fan of the Counter out here in California and when I first went to Boylan that's what it reminded me of. The Counter does it better but Boylan is a great substitute when you are in Charlottesville.

Come here for the burgers. The lack of healthy options was disappointing. The drinks were average. It's a fun place to spend a night or weekend afternoon in a college town, though.

I had a great time here with some buddies the other night. The bartender hooked me up on my drink. He didn't know how to make it (Grateful Dead - all time favorite drink), but after I described it, he hit it dead on! I wish I remembered his name cuz he was definitely a top notch bartender. Drinks were a little pricey though. The Grateful Dead ran me $11.00. The 2 floor layout is really cool. I spent the bulk of the time upstairs, where there's another bar, pool tables, and a few arcades. I was gonna SCHOOL this chick in Buck Hunter, but it took my quarters. She got lucky, LOL! Truth be told, I watched her play, and girl could shoot! I probably would've ended up strapped to the hood of her car, LOL! 4 stars Boylan!

i really like this place. I get lunch here a couple times a week. Their vegan burger is amazing. I wish they had better parking situation or validated my parking ticket for the garage.

3 stars because my meal was alittle skimpy. However its good atmosphere for a college bar and has shuffle board/luge tables. Known as more of a jock hangout it can get alittle loud. The menu of burgers and build your own burgers is very enticing and would def recommend going that route. Beer selection is kinda weak too, but lower standards are expected when traveling.

Thank Gd Orbit went out of business. Srsly? Srsly. That place was kind of a dump and filled with dive bar awkwardness. Ug. And you know what? It's been replaced with a restaurant. A good restaurant. Nay, a great one. This may have to enter the Charlottesville top 10. Boylan Heights is a burger joint, yes, and Charlottesville is kind of famous for it's amazingly delicious burgers. The White Spot, even chains like Five Guys, have a huge rep for some unknown reason amongst UVA students. I personally don't like either. They're greasy and they don't sit well. I don't want to eat something knowing that it's gonna give me mud butt in about 15 minutes. Yeah, I said mud butt. On yelp. What? So in my opinion, Boylan Heights beats them both hands down. Because the burgers are good. Not like "mm this grease is coating my throat so it must be good." Like actually, really good. And you remember its goodness. It's not like a bad night drinking, which feels good going down but you rarely remember it fondly. Go to Boylan Heights. Don't eat Five Guys and drive. Ok, now on to an actual review! Boylan Heights hit three notes really well: the beer, the appetizers, the burgers. To be honest, all I had was a Guiness, so I can't talk about more indie beers there. But the menu seemed extensive, and certainly designed to complement this gastropub feel. The appetizers are remarkably good. Who knew corndogs could be this good? Really plump Kosher hot dogs (really, the only good kind, and this coming from someone who worships at the altar of Pork) in a delicious batter with a zingy-but-not-too-zingy sauce. Let's be real, if anyone is going to be prejudiced against a corndog it's me. But these are craveworthy. Plus, you'll be those cool kids who ordered corndogs when everyone else thought it was silly. Onto the burgers. There are two options for this, the first is to choose from a pre-set selection of 5 or 6 burgers, including the B.O.M.B. (the Burger Of the Month Burger, brought to you by the Redundancy Center for Redundancy). But why do that when you can build your own....on scantron. That's right, in keeping with the "college" theme of the whole restaurant, the menu is on a scantron sheet complete with number two pencils. You can choose the following, all for less than $8: Type of bun (regular? english muffin? no bun, if you're avoiding carbs, but srsly, who does that nowadays? Atkins is so 2003). Type of patty (veggie? turkey? beef? - you can double up for an extra $2.something bucks) A sauce A cheese 3 regular toppings Extra money for premium toppings The options are limitless. Feeling traditional? There's always a beef burger on a bun with mushrooms, onions, bacon, some provolone or swiss, mustard. Or go greek, with turkey and tzatziki sauce with some feta, cucumbers, and olive tapanade. There are probably hundreds of choices. Enjoy. Oh, and make it a combo with some DELICIOUS sweet potato fries. They're healthier for you than regular fries. Srsly. Sweet potatoes have so many nutrients...most of which leave during the frying process, but ignore that part. All in all, Boylan Heights may be one of the best Charlottesville has to offer.

Stopped in with a large group of friends at around 3 p.m. The bartender was friendly enough and extremely efficient. She told us we could order with her and then head upstairs and she would make sure our food found us. I got a beef burger with pepper jack cheese, caramelized onions, fresh jalapenos and chipotle mayo, as well as a side of sweet potato fries. The burger was fine. The meat tasted great and was well-seasoned, and the caramelized onions were delicious and plentiful. I was disappointed, though, that my burger had very little spice. All of the seeds and membranes had been removed from the fresh jalapenos, robbing them of their heat. I tasted no pepper flavor at all in the cheese, and the chipotle mayo was only barely there. The sweet potato fries were tasty enough and not at all greasy, but they were a little overcooked and a little oversalted, both of which took away from the sweet potato flavor. I found the space very pleasant in the midafternoon, although it might be much less so when crowded. There are comfy leather couches upstairs, and my friends and I enjoyed playing shuffleboard and pool. Altogether, I wasn't floored, but I would go back and try a different burger combination.

Ahhh 15 brews on tap, organic, local, grass fed bovine and HD TV's? This is a proper grub hub nicely situated on the most intriguing corner in Charlottesville. If you are in the area please go for the cow's sake.

For burgers, as good as it gets. Also, sweet potato fries! Some parts are less than ideal for a burger dinner (read: not the cleanest place) but that's the price to pay for it also being a (fun) bar.

I really like Boylan Heights. Their burgers of the month (BOMB) are usually pretty good, and their regular features are also stellar. The sides are all delicious. To top it off, they usually have a great selection of beer, and great TV's to watch sports. When I was living in Charlottesville, my roommate and I used to stop in at least once a month. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is passing through Charlottesville.

Friends raved about this place so I thought I would give it a try. The veggie burger was just so-so and the service was decent. I did like the sweet potato fries. The building is cool as they revamped the old Orbits place. It's definitely loud in there, so don't plan on talking to the people you are with.

Very tasty, creative burgers. Quality beef, inventive toppings or you can design your own. Very nice crispy tater tots, and a very tasty fried bacon potato salad. Good beer selection (this is Charlottesville, after all), friendly service. I imagine it gets pretty packed when UVA is in session, but I don't blame the students at all!

My favorite place to eat in cville. Good atmosphere, reasonable prices and eye candy for waitresses!!!

Where do I start? How about with the over priced burgers served on bread so hard it cut the roof of my mouth and the fries that were burnt to a crisp. I was not impressed, but if that's your thing, go ahead, give it five stars, I certainly never will. The only reason I'm giving it any stars at all is because the theme. The scan tron order forms are creative. But don't even get me started on late night. I don't get the hype. Take away the name change, the bartenders in ties and a few decorations and you still have Orbits. Oh, and did you know that after a certain time when you order a drink they'll automatically make it a double, and charge you for it, even though its not what you ordered! Ridiculous! and don't request a song from the DJ there on Wednesdays. He'll never play it, he'll tell you to come back next week and make your request earlier in the night. Seriously, how hard is it to add a song to a playlist, and there weren't even that many people there that night so it wasn't like every song he was playing was a request. And when I refer to him I use the term DJ lightly because knowing how to make a playlist on iTunes does not earn you that title. You disappoint me Norbits, you really do. The novelty of your establishment will soon wear off and people will return to Elliewood where they belong.

Teachers visiting Charlottesville needed a basic place to get away during the week, and we ended up at Boylan Heights. Service was so-so (long wait for a refill and another round of drinks, even when we asked the waitress), but the food was excellent. I ordered the Teacher's Pet, which is a basic grilled cheese, but they encourage you to customize, so I got a swiss and goat cheese sandwich with beefsteak tomatoes, avocado, and black bean and corn salsa. YUM. The sweet potato fries on the side were cooked to perfection, and my friends raved about their loaded tater tots and all the sauces they tried.

The food is mostly local and organic and tastes great. You can create your own burger with a wide variety of items. Had the deep fried pickels once, but they were too greasy for me. Service was not very attentive and quite bad. (It was a Saturday afternoon in Spring break, I guess then every student server's motivation sinks if they are still in their college town).

  • Abby C.

The burgers here are nice, although the buns tend to be soggy. If you are looking for something without a college-town feel, I would not recommend this, but it would be great for watching the game with some friends.

Burgers were good but the service was s-l-o-w. Seriously, very slow. Fun, casual atmosphere.

This is only the second time I've eaten at Boylan Heights. I looked at both the menu and the "burger bar" menu. After looking at both I decided to build my own burger. I wasn't sure if my choices would equal a good meal, but I was surprised in a good way when it was amazing! The server was great and the tables outside in the shade were fantastic (if you don't mind a little street noise). After eating here again, I'd definitely go back. It was nice to enjoy it while the UVA students were out of town, on a quiet week day.

Bring back the old Boylan!! Once a lunchtime favorite of mine, now a disappointment. Boylan has recently undergone a menu/service re-vamping of sorts. Their buns have changed, their sides have changed, heck even their plates have changed! I typically view change as a good thing, but not when it means dry burgers and more expensive side salads. I just want my old Foreign Exchange Burger back

Awesome burger. Sure, it's not GIGANTIC, but I prefer a good, quality sourced burger over a pound of nasty beef. Beyond the great burger, atmosphere is sports bar with decent (not great service). Fries are awesome, homemade sauce is awesome, and great selection of local drafts. I'd def return if I were in the area for a casual meal!

  • Jaeau O.

Went here during happy hour which is until 7pm. The special is $3 for draft beers, which is not bad. They have a pretty good selection of draft beers too. The bartender at that time was really helpful in deciding which beers to try. There is seating outside should you decide to be out in the open. We opted to be inside for the AC since it was hot and humid outside. As for the food, I decided to build my own burger for $8.99 (good price). The beef burger I made had goat cheese, sautéed mushrooms, fresh jalapeños, Boylan and sriracha sauces. I got tater tots for my side. The meal itself was okay, not bad but not the best I've had. I would recommend coming here for happy hour after work (if you work nearby) to watch sports games and maybe a bite to eat if you're hungry.

Signature burgers are cleverly designed! The combinations are clever. I always get the western civ because of thee bacon and egg. Tater tots for the win! Not the best burgers I've had but definitely Up there.'

We had mozzarella sticks and burgers, both were top notch! They actually have a build a burger scantron - amazing idea! Service was pleasant and quick. Great little place for people watching.

  • Claudia H.

Decent burger place but I wouldn't get too excited about it being called a gourmet burger place. As far as the burgers nothing really stood out, their burger combinations were not all that unique or creative, and they were a bit pricey. Doesn't compare at all to Jack Brown's burgers creativity, taste, and price. The food that did impress however were all the sides. Loaded tater tots were so deliciously crispy and loaded just right. Loved the BBQ pulled pork nachos, you could tell their chips were home made and the BBQ was really good. The crinkle fries were good as well. Good beer selection. Overall just ok

Stood at the bar for 15 minutes waiting to get a drink, no other person ordering drinks, 2 bartenders doing nothing, gets a girl next to me a cup of water, gave up and left... Lazy much?

Well ... I can say I tried. I tried to get interested in the super bowl. I really tried. Just earlier in the day we were watching football and puppy bowl in another establishment. This time we went to this sports bar and were ready to have a party. They have two levels and tonnes of screens. The waiters are young and cute, but the atmosphere was gloomy. It turns out it was too early for that and I have no patience for waiting around for people to get drunk slowly. So we had a few beers and a few shots and went back to the hotel.

Great burger - great beer selection. If you want the cider though, don't go right at opening for lunch. As part of our family Christmas vacation, we shared lunch with my sister's family and both kids and adults alike. If you have kids with you be sure to sit upstairs. They have huge couches and recliners that children are sure to enjoy. Just remember that it's a bar so not all times are good times for family times. Their approach to burgers is great - they have some pre-made options (to get you beyond your comfort zone) or, you can create your own burger. How they take the custom order is via a mock-Scan Tron sheet. This place is on The Corner after all so it is cool that they play into the UVA feel a bit with this approach to taking orders. The service, the drinks, the food, and atmosphere make me highly recommend a meal at Boylan Heights.

  • Mike G.

Burgers are incredible and overall the food is very good, but the service is pathetic. Slow, rude, and incompetent would be the best way to describe the managers and servers. As a previous UVA undergrad, I will also say I've had much more fun at other bars on the corner.

Ultimately, Boylan is not just a bar but a restaurant. I've run the gamut of sandwiches here including the Meating Cancelled, the Bird is the Word and the Varsity. All three have been better than I expected, which makes me want to try more on the menu! I've gotten the veggie burger sans bun, on top of a bed of spinach with an olive tapenade, roasted red pepper and tzatziki sauce when I wanted to have a light dinner. The portion seemed enormous and the bun would have actually been unnecessary. I'm also pretty sure the veggie burger is from the No-Bull local brand, which are my all-time fav veggie burger variety out there due to its thicker consistency. (In general, most veggie patties tend to be either hockey pucks or sponges.) The Bird is the Word is another generous serving - large, tender chicken breast with creamy avo, black bean puree and a spicy sauce. Other friends recommended it while we had drinks and it was the perfect complement to my light beer. After a night on the town, I crave chili cheese fries, but that seems more like a Midwest dish because I can't seem to find this at most places in Cville. The Varsity placed my fav comfort food combo of chili and cheese on top of a big beef burger. As this was the closest thing on the menu to my all-time late-night food, I went with it. And I inhaled it in about five minutes. With all of the above, I've gotten the sweet potato fries on the side. Now these have been fairly mediocre to me. I'm more of a fan of thick wedges rather than shoe-string. And they could have used something interested like seasoning or a dipping sauce. I've decided that I like to come here for food and drink. (Although, be prepared: the price point for food is a little higher than other places on The Corner.) There's a little bit of everything depending on the mood: Upstairs has a comfy couch area for lounging, along with plenty of TVs for sports events (like the World Cup or college football Saturdays). But the area I most like to spend time is deck/patio area or downstairs because it's in the middle of the action.

I have been to this place four times and each time it gets worse. The last time I went there, the waitress just stood around texting on her phone while we waited forever on her to take our order. Their drinks are overpriced and the food is, too. They are also not very accommodating to those of us who eat gluten-free. You'd think an organic fancy burger joint would have gluten free bread but they do not. Instead they mash up your burger and put it in a bowl. Save yourself a trip!

Amazing vegan burger. Honestly, I like it better than Citizen's. A little pricey but really really good. I also had the sweet potato fries and they were delish.

  • Melissa R.

Not impressed. It is a college bar, but for the quality the prices should be cheaper. Curly fries were more bits and pieces than curls. Obviously frozen and refried. Burger was ok. A little over done for medium. Would probably just come for a beer and to watch a game. Would not recommend the food.

I used to love this place, but the burgers have changed. I swear they used to be bigger, now they are small / half the size. Did the fry portions shrink as well? It feels that way. Sigh. My sweet potato fries were soggier than usual. Now that I think about it why do I have to pay a dollar extra just to get some honey and brown sugar on my sweet potato fries if I am already paying a dollar extra for the fries themselves? Or is it two extra? I tried one of their milkshakes and it was very meh. I used to love coming here, but the price, quality, and portions are just not worth it anymore. Oh and one time a few months ago I went a bit overboard and got a decent amount of toppings on my burger and I heard my waitress saying "Is she really going to eat all of that?" to one of the other service people.

Boylan has been going downhill...Recently I went for lunch and the waitress forgot our order and the food came out cold. Today, I went for lunch again and did not get a menu or drink from a waitress for 10 minutes. There were 4 waitresses and 2 bartenders standing around too. I understand that it is summer and maybe the 2nd string is working, but that isn't a good excuse. Pick it up Boylan.

I love this place. Good healthy fresh burgers. Best in Charlottesville that I've ever had! Nice atmosphere with two floors! Great view of the corner district. So many burger choices its hard to decide. Get sweet potato fries for sure. And a good draft! Highly recommend.

I have been coming here for about 2+ years now. I live over an hour away but try to come when I am in C'ville . The Over-Achiever is an amazing sandwich ! I get it every time and it is always the same . I usually would not order chicken salad when I go out to eat somewhere but this sandwich is special . There are some good prices on beers during happy hour too !

Came here because a friend and I needed a quick meal and she knew that their burgers were good. Unfortunately we didn't order a burger we were there for brunch. It was slightly limited for brunch a few burger options for lunch and a few breakfast options. Our waitress didn't seem very knowledgable about the menu.It was difficult for her to describe things. I decided on the huevos rancheros which was pulled pork with onions and tomatoes on a flour tortilla topped with cheese sauce,a shiracha cream sauce and fried tortilla strips. This came with Hashbrowns. My friend ordered the Hilary which was an omelet with spinach tomatoes and goat cheese. I can't say this was the most amazing brunch experience. The food was overly cheesy. The Hashbrowns were more like a potato casserole there was no crispy texture to it.The huevos rancheros was covered Ina process nacho cheese sauce which was way too salty. The onions were thick rings not sliced making it difficult to eat. It felt like someone threw together some leftovers and served it to me. My friends omelet the Hilary had too much goat cheese usually this isn't a bad thing but it was literally filled with goat cheese. She also ordered the Hashbrowns and weren't to keen on them either. Overall a mediocre experience for brunch would I return? Not for brunch maybe for a burger.

Boylan is pretty well-known as a drinking establishment, so I never thought about eating there.. but tonight my friend wanted to try out the food there! First of all, it definitely is more of a bar than a sit-in restaurant, so, as good as the food is, wouldn't recommend it as a family eat-in place. It's sortof dim and loud with chatter and noise from outside. Being my first time there, I had no idea what I wanted... but the menus have a simple, clear description (with Chef Favorites marked!) so those definitely helped. I ended up getting the Room 121 burger! It was delicious..... Good choice if you're not looking for anything crazy. I'd say it was a pretty classic burger. It came out looking a bit small, but it's filling! Plus, the curly fries that come out as a side are da bomb diggity. Price range, I think, is also fairly reasonable... Most of the burgers are in the $7- $11 range each! Definitely would come back for the food.

Boylan is weirdly one of my favorite restaurants in Charlottesville. Between the customizable burgers, great selection of fries (both curly and sweet potato), and decent beer selection, Boylan definitely has set my standard for a good burger joint. Plus the location is fantastic, especially on a nice day when the windows are open or you can sit outside. Tips: Boylan has Red Velvet shakes! What? So awesome. Also, Boylan has great drink specials on Thursday evenings! So definitely check that out. (Unfortunately, I only learned this a week before graduating!)

My husband and I have been a few times and had pretty good experiences. It often gets really loud and crowded. Definitely not the best burger in town, but good enough. I've enjoyed the grilled chicken sandwich, but it's pretty small. My husband also felt like they skimped on his fries. The menu set-up is neat and makes for easy, customizable ordering.

On a recent visit we had some friends from the area take my boyfriend & I here for dinner to show us their favorite burger bar. It's a cool concept with the way you can build your own burger. However, it can be a little overwhelming with all the yummy ways you could build it! Our burgers came out & looked great. Until we cut into them, my boyfriend & I realized that we were never asked how we would like it cooked & we had a couple of well done patties sitting on our plates...and we are medium/medium rare eaters. We should have specified, but it slipped our minds (overwhelming building of the burg remember ;-))I was disappointed that a few of the ingredients I had chosen were left off as well. The side choices were the best thing I had. My boyfriend ordered the sweet potato fries & our friend ordered the fried green tomatoes. Both were yummy, but my side was the fried potato salad & OMG was it delish, I highly recommend. I think they have a cool place & I enjoyed the airy environment, but they need some work on the burgers.

First and foremost, this is a burger place and the burger I had was good, with creative and fresh toppings. They also have plenty of topping options (you can design your own) and have turkey, veggie, vegan, etc. options. However, the sweet potato fries were soggy and not especially memorable. But kudos to them for not charging extra for sweet potato fries or tater tots. Unfortunately, the service here was quite spotty and disorganized and everything took a while--getting our orders taken, getting our food, getting our checks. 4 stars for the burger, 2 for everything else...so a 3 star spot overall.

Because of college kids, traffic and a lack of parking (unless you use the garage), I seldom venture to The Corner. Today I went for lunch with my boss and our intern, who schooled us on the Boylan experience. The burgers really are great. I "built" my own burger with beef, bacon, whole grain bun, blue cheese, bibb lettuce, beefsteak tomato, a tad bit of mayo and a side of sweet potato fries. Everything was fabulous. The burger was cooked perfectly, and it didn't take long for the food to come out. I tasted my boss' tater tots, and they were great, as well. I would've liked to have gotten a bison burger, but they didn't offer bison. Perhaps because the waitresses knew our intern, perhaps not, the service was great... friendly and attentive. If you're looking for a great burger on The Corner, Boylan Heights is it.

This place is awesome! The atmosphere is fun and themed like a school. There is lockers on the wall and the build your own menu is a scantron test. Waiters are fun and it makes for an overall great experience. The only problem is the lighting is very dim inside. Other than that the selection is great! The build your own menu comes in great handy and with a fun twist to it. The food was excellent!! One of the best burgers I've had in a while. I will be making a return trip next time I'm in Charlottesville!

This place was overpriced and overrated and had nothing but incompetant teens working there that were to lazy on their phones and talking to their friends than serving us.the only reason i give it 2 stars is because a person who had only been there 1 day and obviously wasnt being trained very well because the girl training him that we only saw once didnt want to do anything but stand around on her phone with her friends was the only person to check on us and tried to get our wants right.it was not busy at all maybe 3 other people at the most there and it was a dissapointing first and last experience.

I was craving a good burger in Cville and decided to try Boylan Heights. It was a busy Friday night but my friend and I were seated quickly. Our waitress was prompt and courteous. I ordered the Room 121 and my buddy had the Varsity (chili). The burgers were correctly cooked to our preferences and packed plenty of flavor. The ingredients and toppings were fresh. The only complaint I have is that the open wall to the patio made the rest of the restaurant cold. Hence, the temperature of our food cooled considerably fast. No biggy for me because I'm a fast eater!

This is a college bar. Don't let them fool you into thinking this is one of those gourmet, have it your way, burger bars. I think that must be their gimmick. We came here because we were in town and needed to find a place to watch the NCAA basketball games. We got a seat quickly and got drinks. We ordered nachos and out came the saddest looking nachos I had ever seen. For $11 I expected something substantial but this was some chips with liquid cheese spray and sour cream clearly out of a tube. We ate a couple and the server came by to ask how they were and I said they were terrible so she went to get the manager. He offered to get us something else but we just decided to stay safe and just get burgers. They were good although I asked for honey mustard and got yellow mustard (remember that gourmet burger claim?). I finished with the Red Velvet Milkshake and told that manager that was the best thing they had there. If you're over 25, go to a real restaurant....unless you are perpetually a college student, then this is perfect for you.

Huge gourmet burgers anyway you'd like it and yummy curly fries (ask for honey mustard on the side!). Their BOMB (burger of the month) keeps things interesting and there's always something new to try. Never been here during their bar hours so can't say anything about the night scene here. Service was always prompt and efficient. Their beef is also fresh and local so thats a big thumbs up!

I was here with a group of people this past Saturday evening after the Foxfield races. I have never received worse service at a restaurant. It took at least 45 minutes for us to get our food. We were seemingly forgotten about. When our food did come it was not at the same time. The food runner had no idea who had what or even which burgers he had in his hands to distribute. The sides he brought out didn't not match what we ordered and were mediocre at best. The sweet potato fries were soggy and cold when we got them. When I confronted the manager expressing the horrible service we received he was initially helpful but did not "take care of us" to a level I felt was reasonable. I expressed that I thought it was reasonable for us to pay for the alcohol we consumed and tip our servers a full rate but we did not want to pay for the food. He wanted to give us gift cards to return despite the fact that all of us were visiting from out of town. To cap things off he insulted me before we left because I was still unhappy with what he was proposing. I have never been more upset or displeased with a restaurant experience in my entire life. Save yourself the headache and steer clear of this place.

Good burger and beers in Charlottesville. First night in town for grad school so decided to have an authentic college bar/restaurant experience rather than do something overly "grown up". The cool thing is they evidently use organic beef and you can customize your combo to the nth degree. Burger was juicy and cooked medium rare-ish with a great flavor, clever "bubble sheet" ordering slip allows a large selection of cheeses, veggies, sauces, your bun, etc. The atmosphere is sports bar perfect. Plenty of screens for games... Roll up garage doors to let the air in and an attentive bar staff (ate alone at the bar). The only thing with the burger was that it did not fit the bun well, too round and not large enough... But hey that's not the end of the world.

I like this place a lot - had a great turkey burger and loved the fresh jalapeno on my burger. Howeverrrr, I wish they had more comfortable seating than just hightop tables and those random couches. Also, if you order a draft from upstairs, they have to go downstairs to get it (so you're gonna have to wait awhile....).

    (4)
  • Good E.

yay! they had tater tots :)) i LOVE tater tots i got the western civ burger and it was huge. i made the intentional decision to eat the tots first but as a result i had very little room for the burger :( the upstairs seating is pretty neat . they have couches and tables to watch games. seems like a great place to grab drinks and just chill out.

I honestly think that Boylan is highly overrated. I came with a friend when they weren't busy for lunch. Our server had no more than two other tables and already seemed overwhelmed. When she came to take our order she didn't write anything down - one appetizer and we both had burgers. The appetizer never came out and the burgers were so off from what we ordered that it might as well been a completely new order. Instead of having a manager come out and talk to us we had to wait over 45 minutes for us to get anything that we had originally ordered. And let me reiterate, the server had like 2 tables - if it were a busy Friday night I would have completely understood, but really - two tables? The reason I'm giving it 3 stars and not 1 is that the decor is pretty cool and the building is an awesome location. It's a great people watching spot when the walls are opened overlooking the corner. This place definitely has potential - they just need to tighten everything up! I will be giving them another chance!

College area sports bar and burger joint--but with a difference: The beef is raised locally, organic, and aged like a fine steak before grinding the hamburger. There is a huge choice of sauces, cheeses, and other toppings and you can choose from the preprogrammed burgers or design your own. I rank it way above 5 Guys burger restaurants. Re the Cole slaw, it's coarse cut purple cabbage with a mild dressing that let's the cabbage flavor come through. I liked, wife did not.
