So I'm not a big fan of Chinese food but I do get cravings SOMETIMES and when I do I'm sure to order from South China. I love it! Recently I ordered frm there and I made the mistake of writing my phone number wrong n not writing my apt # of my address. The delivery person said they called me multiple times and when I called they told me that but I was so sure I wrote my information correct. After I got off the phone with them I checked my email because if you order through yelp they send you emails letting you know the status of your order (which I love) n they were right! I was wrong!! My phone number was wrong n there was no apt#, of course I apologized to the lady and she showed me her phone and everything the print out of the order. She was super sweet n said no problem but she def let me know to call instead if I'm going to write the wrong or enough information lol which was cute! Def recommend this place to everyone!

This is good, but I ordered chow mein which was a gravy and I was expecting noodles. I will try lo mein as already suggested by the prompt person over phone. It was delivered ahead of time which was unexpected. It came with fortune cookies and wantons. So, its good for home delivery Thanks

I only order from the Malaysian menu. It's all great.

Incredible Kung Pao chicken. Fast, pleasant service and food seems cleaner than most Chinese takeout. A real perk to the neighborhood.

I stumbled upon this place after house hunting. Rather than doing delivery, I actually sat down and ate here. I've never done that at a Chinese restaurant before. The service was really good, surprisingly. And I really enjoyed the typical Chinese place decor. My boyfriend and I took a look at the menu before deciding to split a lunch special. Both of us had an appetite, but weren't starving, so we figured it would be a good compromise. We got the General Tso's chicken with an extra side of white rice. We got our food quickly, and the server even brought us a second plate to make it easier to share. My goodness, this was the most delicious General Tso's chicken I've ever had in my entire life. It was so crispy and meaty, with such good flavor! And it tasted so fresh (something I never thought I'd be saying about Chinese food of any kind). And it was so reasonable for the amount of food we got. We both ate enough where we were pretty full. The pieces were nice and big, and they weren't mostly batter, like some other places do. I overheard two other patrons arguing with the waitress over tea, though. She had charged them for the tea they had ordered, while the guy adamantly protested that he had never been charged for tea in the 10+ years he's been coming here. She said the price of tea is going up so they had to start charging for it. So, I guess you long-tine patrons of South China, they're charging for tea to compensate for the hike in the tea market... :| I'll definitely be back for the General Tso's and lunch menu. I took a look at their dinner menu prices, and it looked a bit on the pricey side. I'll be sticking to my new usual from now on!

Solid sized portions and tasty Chinese food! This is a very good value. My favorite is the Kung Pao Chicken and my boyfriend gets the General Tso. It's right at the end of our block and has become our go-to when it's too hot or too busy to cook so we mainly order pick-up.

I have been trying to find good take out Chinese in my neighborhood and they're all terrible. I finally ordered from South China and it did not disappoint! I judge a place on their dumplings, hot and sour soup Mongolian beef. All hit the spot and made the grade but the soup was exceptional! I'm definitely ordering from here again.

I been eating at this place for lunch for about 6 month now I'm always happy with my Kung pow chicken and hot and sour soup but today I found something in my soup wtf I was so pissed

I was super stoked to try South China Chinese & Malaysian Restaurant when a friend recommended it for take-out. For one thing, I had been abstaining from Chinese food since leaving San Francisco, since I had no idea which venues were "authentic" within the area and pretty much only eat Chinese when it's recommended via a friend (since quality can vary so greatly). Additionally, I was excited to also find Malaysian. A few weeks ago, I ordered the Crispy Beef (a "Chef's Specialty") upon the recommendation of my friend. Unfortunately, while the sauce was nice (though a bit predictably sweet - suited specifically for the American "take-out menu" palate), the quality (or lack thereof) of the beef was unacceptable. Chewy unedible pieces comprised nearly half of my entree. Then there was the "wonton soup," which was basically dark (vs. the traditionally light) broth that was almost entirely oil. Gross! And the "wontons" were large doughy masses - like nothing I'd ever seen before. Sadly, this was not the option to which I was so looking forward. Will not be ordering from South China again. Bummer.

My husband and I recently tried South China for the first time, and we were not disappointed. We had the Crystal Shrimp Dumplings, and although small, they were tasty bites. The wrapper to shrimp ratio was perfect, it was not too dense or over steamed. Also, you could taste the shrimp. The Pandan Chicken (Chicken in chili tumeric sauce) was excellent. First of all it wasn't swimming in oil which I absolutely appreciate. The sauce was great, I love tumeric flavor and mixed with mild heat and balanced against a subtle sweet I couldn't quite place was delicious. Personally I added a bit more chili powder and fish sauce but that's just my personal preference. My husband took a bite and liked the flavors as is. My husband had the Shrimp and Vegetables Malaysian style. He graciously let me try a bite and the veggies still had a nice crunch. I love this because I've been jaded by other take out joints' mushy veggies. Again the sauce was...sauce NOT all oil (kudos). It was complex in the way you could taste different ingredients, not just all heat or lemongrass, etc. Next time I order I just need to ask if they would possibly amp up the spice level. It was good, just seem like dialed down for an American palate.

  • Jason W.

If you want good American Chinese take out this is your hole in the wall joint. The Malaysian food is same American take out style. Def not the hot , sour funkiness me and my little boy toy get down with on the regular. Don't expect any bells in whistles... If it's a rainy day or your just straight hung over, you will not be let down. 3 stars I'll order again.

Great take-out food and pretty fast service (depending on the night). Particularly love their Malaysian food - char koay noodles and rendang are my faves. Also, can never order here without getting the crab wontons.

I'm embarrassed to say that the delivery folks from South China can find our place with their eyes closed. The food is good, the prices are very reasonable and the delivery is always quick...unlike other restaurants that are closer to our house (Thai Pepper).

Came in for late lunch on a Sunday. This would be our second time coming to South China. So far we've only ordered from the Malaysian menu. The first time here, we had the char kway teow with chicken and the fried tofu with peanut sauce. Today, we had the lo mein with chicken, fried tofu and vege dumpling(steamed). Let's start wih the noodle dishes. The Char kway teow is slightly different than what I've had in Malaysia (a bit drier, sauce wise and noodles were somewhat firmer). It's usually served with shrimp/cockles, eggs, bean sprout and other ingredients. Anyways it was still good taste wise. The lo mein was tasty, we enjoyed it a lot. The fried tofu was ok, it came with a sweet chili sauce topped with ground peanuts, though in the menu it states peanut sauce but we were fine with it. The steamed vege dumpling was just ok. I thought the skin was a bit too thick. Service so far is good. We enjoyed our food and will be back to try out more.

About a 2-2.5: The place seems to be owned by a family, and they serve both Chinese and Malaysian food. We dined in, and ordered the crab rangoon, fried chicken wings, chicken fried rice, chicken lo mein, and General Tso's Chicken. I wasn't much of a fan of the crab rangoon as the wonton skins were way too thick and the filling was way too small of an amount. The fried chicken wings were nice and crispy, and it came with a sweet and sour sauce (mumbo sauce?); it seems to be a hit to some of the regulars. The fried rice was delicious with the little cubed veggies and the chunks of chicken. The lo mein was good, and not as greasy as other places. The General Tso's used dark meat which were nicely battered, had a great crunch, and actually had a very very slight kick from the red chili peppers. The red sauce wasn't overly sweet and thick, which was nice. The service was straightforward and not overbearing. There are no refills, as beverages are out of bottles/cans. I even saw some Alexandria cops that came in for a quick meal. Street parking can be found around the block. +General Tso's chicken

So long story short. Went for an hour run and was reminded of the worst chines food I had in El Salvador. And still was craving good chines. Called this place at 10:05pm on a Sunday and they still took my order. Went and picked it up 15 minutes later and I was truly a happy piglet. Thank you South China Restaurant for waiting for me.:)

3.25 but in comparison so much better than every other delivery Chinese in the Shirlington area so I round up to 4. On my quest to find a decent Chinese delivery spot, South China has done the best out of all other options. I like their Malaysian menu. Dumplings are better than all of the other Chinese delivery joints. Hot and sour soup and egg drop soups are good too. I enjoy the Rendang off of the Malaysian menu and I had a noodle dish (unfortunately can't recall which that was really good but slightly bland, much better than any noodle dish at other aforementioned Chinese delivery spots though). Delivery always comes on time and the delivery man is so sweet and always has a smile.

I decided to try this place because of all the great review, and I'm really sorry I did. We ordered some appetizers- spring rolls and dumplings. The egg rolls were pretty much all cabbage and didn't have much flavor. The dumplings even less so. For meals we had curry chicken and yumyum chicken. I was excited that the chicken was very spicy, or so it said on the menu. It wasn't... To be honest, I don't even know which entree was which. Neither had any flavor, and is certainly couldn't tell if one was curry. A total disappointment. I wonder if these other reviewer are family of the owners, or have no taste buds....

  • David H.

They have good Chinese food but for something different order one of their Malaysian menu items. The beef with basil is excellent, tender beef with onions and peppers in a tasty basil sauce and a side of rice. Service is very friendly, the delivery apologized for how long it took and he wasn't even late.

I order delivery from here more than I probably should. Very fast delivery for the best greasy spoon Chinese food in the area. Really nice family that owns the place.

Kung Pao chicken is pebble size chunks of chicken in peanuts and zucchini. The chicken low mien had 3 half dollar size chunks of chicken in it. Crab won tons were dry but ok tasting. Hot and sour soup is basic and average as well. My take out order was wrong, as I was charged extra for fried rice and received white rice. However, they were fast (sadly the only positive). Not worth the drive to the hood. I would rather risk being mugged in DC in the ghetto to get Chinese than eat this madness again.

This is the best Chinese food in NOVA. I've order from this place for the past 15 years and will continue to order ONLY from here. This is my first review on yelp and trust me it's worth it. 5***** all around. Fav: beef and broccoli, chicken and broccoli, egg rolls, chicken fried rice, roasted pork fried rice. Yum yum. About to order some food now. Lol!!!!!!!

This has been our go-to take-out/delivery place since moving to Alexandria. Love the Malay part of the menu - have tried literally every single thing on it. We are both addicted to the chicken curry puff and I really love their crab rangoon as far as appetizers go. As far as dishes go - all Malay stuff is great, especially Char Koay Teow - stir-fried flat noodles with chicken/shrimp.. The only bad thing I can think is once I think I got a dish with some MSG in it ( I know that because I react to it super fast and my face turns into a hot, red, tomato mess) - but that was only once out of I can't even count how many times.. so unless it happens again I don't really care.

On a very freezing winter storm day, my co worker and I decided to order out food. We tried their food one time and we loved it. Reason why we decided to try them again. 50 mins passed, food wasn't delivered. Called the store numerous times and was told the same excuse, "driver just left". To be honest we are only 3 mins drive away from them... The food came after an hour, cold... Very very bad customer service... We were not even offered to have it for free... Nor was charged half... Since it came ridiculously LATE... Drivers excuse was, our chickens are so thick it takes more time to cook. I was like ... Ehhhhh?????

It's typical delivery quality Chinese food, but the owner is so friendly, you'll want to become a repeat customer.

  • Jesse S.

I ordered the sesame cold noodles and cashew chicken. The sesame noodles had no taste - I had to add my own peanut sauce to it. The cashew chicken wasn't what I was expecting. The chicken was battered and cooked in a sweet sauce. It was like general tso's chicken with some cashews added. If I had ordered general tso's then I'd say it was really good, but I wasn't in the mood for battered chicken in a sweet sauce. I'll probably give them another try since their Malaysian food menu looks pretty good.

My favorite place to order Chinese delivery in the northern part of Alexandria. The Triple Delight is wonderful, their dumplings are good. Delivery is quick and friendly, thought they do have an $11 minimum charge requirement. Also, ordering a soft drink from their website is difficult, as it's not a listed menu item. That's mostly because of the BeyondMenu system that they use, which is common to the Chinese delivery places in the area. I've ordered in Chinese food from several places around Del Ray, and South China is the one I'll go back to every time from now on.

  • Julie M.

This is my absolute favorite sit down Chinese place. I am always willing to go out of my way to stop here. Whenever my family comes to visit, they always want to stop here for dinner. I regularly bring out of town friends who love it. My favorite is the triple delight. Their teriyaki beef is amazing. The staff is friendly, the food is always good. They accommodate families with kids and larger parties. You know you can trust a restaurant when the local police are always ordering from here. That is a sure sign that this place is good.

  • Im B.

The best Chinese food in the area. I love their General Tso's. It's simply the best. I do sometimes wish it was a bit spicier, but I've never been disappointed. They are extremely efficient. I've ordered from them, picked-up, and dined there. I highly recommend this place. Great Chinese food!

My friend and I were both sick after we got food from here. The food was dry, felt as if it was old and reheated in the microwave. Never coming back here again!

  • Kate B.

Fantastic!! I was starving after work and ordered from there for the first time after getting off the metro tonight. Great portions, quality food, and the delivery even found my new construction address - which has never happened in our first month here. Quick turnaround as well. Will definitely be ordering from here regularly

    (5)

For the price, the food was substandard. The sesame beef tasted like it was microwaved. The ribs were dry and minimal flavor. Overall, very disappointing.

A low budget, tasty Chinese place. I walked in and had my Chicken Lo Mein in front of me within 5 minutes. What else could you want? 5/5

  • Mattie C.

First things first - one star immediately knocked off because the food arrived more than an hour after we ordered it - we were starving. But other than that, we both really enjoyed our meals and they came in large portions. I got the Malaysian chicken lo mein and it was delicious! It came sprinkled with lime and had bean sprouts, onions, fried tofu chunks and some mysterious sprinkly crumbs along with the chicken and noodles. The tastes mixed great together and I really loved it. I was nervous about trying a new cuisine, but if this is what Malaysian food is like, then I would definitely like to sample some more! Boyfriend got a Chinese crispy beef thing, chicken fried rice and an egg drop soup. He loved it. We both stuffed our faces upon getting our food but couldn't finish because the portion was so large. I am looking forward to digging through my leftovers tonight. I also got a chicken curry puff, which was forgettable. It didn't taste enough like curry and was a little soggy. I would say this is my favorite delivery that I have gotten so far in Old Town. There were some other items on the Malaysian menu that I was eyeing and I will be going for them next! But I highly recommend the Malaysian chicken lomein, I was actually surprised at how much I enjoyed that dish.

  • Rebecca M.

Ohmigod, this may be the best Asian food hands down in the area. Their Chinese options are thoroughly okay, but their Malaysian menu is unstoppable. I tried their rice noodles with shrimp and sprouts from the Malaysian menu and was absolutely in love. The portions were so large I couldn't even get to my Beef Renang, which will make for a great dinner tomorrow. The hot and sour soup was very tasty as well. Reasonable prices and quick, friendly delivery....amazing!

South China is really a gem- what I love most is that they are always so incredibly friendly when they arrive to your door--- always making a little conversation (but not too much) and clearly owners/folks affiliated with the running of this restaurant. Delivery on a weekend night is usually about 45 min- which is pretty standard. The food is solid, far better than most places in this area. One thing I really recommend, and that I haven't found since I left England, is the black bean chicken. A regional dish that's a staple in the UK but that's rare stateside- sautéed (NOT deep fried) chicken and peppers with a delightful black bean sauce. Always a big winner. The Mu Shu is great, too, and I always enjoy the fried dumplings. Everytime I order from South China, I feel like I am supporting a great business with excellent proprietors. Def. try this place!

  • Roland R.

Not sure what's going on with the recent bad reviews but I've never a bad meal from this place. We just got sesame chicken last night and it was delicious. I also like the fact that you can order online through yelp. I recommend it.

So, I have to start off by saying I do not rate many restaurants. It takes a pretty strong way, either good or bad, for me to write about a specific place. When it comes to Chinese, I am very easy to please. As long as the food tastes like its supposed to and it's warm, that's all I ask. I will start off by saying I ordered online, for delivery. I ordered orange chicken, wonton soup and fried rice. After waiting a hour after my order for the food to arrive, they are less than a mile from my house, I didn't eat more than half of it. Orange chicken - it was tasteless and mushy to the point I did not want to eat it. I like crunchy Chinese so I requested extra crispy, this has to be the most mushy, oily, greasy chicken I have ever ate. The sauce that it was in didn't even have a hint of orange, no orange smell, no orange anything. Wonton Soup - juice and noodles were tasteless. It was oily and greasy. No seasoning. Fried rice - the veggies were burnt, rice was crunchy. No seasoning. If you asked if I would eat here again, answer is no.

  • Joy B.

Most Chinese takeout places taste the same, but this place is delicious. Go for the Malaysian menu or popular favorites, those are the best dishes on the menu. I'm also a big fan of their hot and sour soup, especially if I'm not feeling well.

    (4)
  • Tracy O.

All Chinese delivery is not created equal in the DC area. South China is reliably good with fast delivery, even when you order online. Will keep going back as long as they keep delivering hot tasty food to my door!

    (4)
  • Carrie G.

As a displaced New Yorker...I am picky about my Chinese food. But I finally found South China and am happy I did. They consistently turn out reliable and tasty food. We always get the fried meat dumplings. Usually they are crispy on the bottom and soft on top. The meat filling has the perfect hint of ginger. Make sure you tell them to take their time, because they worry that they take 15 minutes to cook and you don't want to rush them, or the bottoms are not crispy enough. The chicken and beef with broccoli have great brown sauces in them. Not gloppy like can happen. But fresh veggies and well trimmed and cooked meat. The fried rice and lo mein are also yummy. They have nice pieces of chicken and a good amount of veggies in each dish.myou can tell the food is cooked to order. The noodles are always chewy and fresh and the rice is not sticky. They give a free soda or egg roll when you order a certain amount. Ask for extra duck sauce, if you want it. Delivery is always reliable, but you can also go pick up very easily. I decline to give the restaurant a fifth star because of the atmosphere when you go in...it is a little drab and makes me a little nervous about what is happening behind the scenes, but the local cops are always there getting their food, and there is always tons of business, so I will keep going. Ps - wonton soup, hot and sour soup are good too.

I am a pretty tough critic when it comes to food and service, but South China is absolutely AMAZING. Their service is great. The lady who served my boyfriend and I was very genuinely nice. Not that fake nice you get most of the time nowadays. It is the hidden gem of chinese food in Alexandria. It is LITERALLY the best Chinese food I've ever had. I would definitely recommend this place to everyone. I ordered General Tso's and a sweet and spicy soup. They were both delicious. The servers are extremely kind and even funny! I will return!

  • Michelle H.

I ordered chow mein for delivery. They sent me a vegetable dish. I called the restaurant and the women told me that they had "tried to contact me" which they did not, I didn't receive any calls. She said that they do chow mein "differently", and its not a noodle dish at this restaurant. If your restaurant's version of a popular food item is different, you should explicitly say so. I will not be ordering from them again

Good food, quick delivery, real chicken in their General Sao's chicken (as opposed to ground formed "chicken...?"). It's my go-to for not-exactly-authentic Chinese

This is our go-to easy carryout dinner. They have yet to disappoint me and my picky hubby. They are one of the few places that don't give you a blank stare when asking for low mien without the veggies (like i said PICKY hubby). It is not much different then most Chinese places food wise and there aren't many surprises. They can be hard to communicate with and have a habit of agreeing with you when they don't understand you. Which is why i gave them 4 stars instead of 5.

    (4)
  • Sita S.

The steamed dumplings are delicious! Fast friendly delivery. This is my favorite Chinese/Malaysian place now.

Nicest people ever! I have never been to the restaurant- I always order delivery. But the food always arrives warm and fresh and within like 20 minutes! I 100% recommend.

I've eaten here twice now. I wanted to give it a fair shot, because I wanted to have a good Chinese takeout option in the neighborhood, but it's flunked both times. The first time, I ordered lo mein, which was oily and flavorless. The second time, I ordered ma po bean curd, which was ... also oily and flavorless. I had to pile my own veggies, sauces and other toppings on for it to be even worth eating. For the time and effort required to make the food palatable, I might as well have cooked from scratch myself. I also ordered a single spring roll, which was the size of a thumb and cost $1.20. The service was very fast and friendly, which is why I gave the restaurant two stars instead of one. Quick service doesn't compensate for the food, but the staff were very nice. While what other reviewers have said about this place being the best Chinese food in the area might be true, that just reflects poorly on the neighborhood Chinese scene. This food is terrible. The only way it could have been worse is if it had made me sick (which, fortunately, it did not).

Good sized portions, moderate prices, a very pleasant staff, and a clean restaurant interior in a good location. It is in my top four or five Chinese restaurants in the D.C. area.

I'm a bit skeptical of any place until I've ordered a few meals and to get 5 stars in my opinion is dang tough. Anyway, I've ordered the Mongolian Beef, Kung Pow Chicken and Chicken Cashew from South China twice now and both orders were very good. The prices are reasonable, you get rice at no extra cost and delivery was about 20 minutes. I WILL be ordering again from here and will probably give them another star if SC continues to do a good job. If you're ordering Chinese, I'd certainly recommend this place. R/Chris

Had the Chef's Special Szechuan Crispy Beef, fried rice and Curry Puffs (from the Malaysian menu). The beef was indeed very crispy but its definitely not as crispy the next day, so enjoy it as soon as possible. Ordered "spicy" but they may have forgotten about that b/c there was no measure of heat in this dish..by my standards anyway. The fried rice is very basic and just has eggs scrambled in. Nothing fancy. I did request "NO MSG" with my online order and looks like that was adhered to, unless they just don't use it period. The curry puffs are not as crispy as I expected. I'm actually used to really doughy Curry Puffs but that are deep-fried hard but these were a little too pastry like and the flakiness of the puffs was compromised by something humid or wet..idk..it just like a pastry that you stick in the microwave and it just sorta gives into itself. Not crispy or flaky at all. Not my favorite curry puff experience. But the entree was the bees knees, as can be expected with a Chef's Special :)

Their Malaysian beef rendang cooked in coconut milk, chicken fried wontons, and chicken puff pastry was surprising very delicious. The delivery service was courteous and prompt. Highly rec'd ordering online in the warmth of your home. Will order once again next time.

In a definitive nutshell.......This is THE joint for Chinese food. YUM!!! Delivery was quick and hot beyond belief. Delivery guy was a gem! Food so good, damn near ate the plate! Yes....seriously! Generous portions, leftovers for two days and who needs a microwave, its still hot from when it was initially delivered!

I was hesitant about ordering after reading a few of the reviews, but I was really pleased overall. I ordered through seamless and got the hot and sour soup, combination fried rice, and beef in black pepper sauce. The food was delivered in about 30 minutes, included everything I ordered + soy sauce and fortune cookies. The hot and sour soup was only ok. I probably wouldn't order it again because it was a bit bland. The only upside was that it included a lot of mushrooms. The combination fried rice and the beef were pretty standard. I'd probably order from here again when I'm in need of some hangover food.

Let me start off by saying that this is my very first review. I have tried many restaurants through yelp but have yet to feel so strongly about a restaurant (either pro/con) that I wanted to take the time out to type something about it. However, I feel like people need to know how bad this place is before they mistakenly order from here. I am very easy to please when it comes to take out Chinese food. In my opinion, you really can't mess it up. I was wrong though. My boyfriend and I decided to order from here this evening. After reading some of the reviews, we decided to get the combination singapore rice noodles, crispy beef, malaysian Kam Yong Beef, and hot and sour soup. Not only did it take them an hour to deliver our food but everything was horribly tasteless. The soup and the noodles had no flavor to it whatsoever. The crispy beef was not cooked very well and very chewy. The Kam Yong Beef was actually mostly onions with a few pieces of beef and various other veggies thrown in and the "special chef sauce" tastes like it is just oil. It was very greasy. Needless to say, I will not be ordering from here again. I don't understand how it got such great reviews from other people...

I'm a big fan of this place for a few reasons: (1) It's very close to my house, which makes it convenient for takeout and fast for delivery. (2) They have online ordering, and they're also very friendly if you call. (3) They deliver even in terrible weather. They've saved our starving butts more than once. (4) The food is tasty. I like their Malaysian menu items the best, but I've never had anything bad there. To be honest, I had some of the Chinese menu items once and they were not as good as usual. I would also like to see more vegetables in their Chinese dishes. But, overall, they are pretty good.

This is my favorite Alexandria Chinese restaurant! They serve Malaysian food too, so it's a fun place to try something new. Favorites: Bomb egg drop soup, chicken crab puffs are delectable, plus their fried rice, and garlic eggplant. Also, spend $20 and get two free drinks or eggrolls! They also deliver, which is great. Overall, the place is clean, the meat seems legitimate enough, and the staff is super friendly. What more could you ask for?

So, this is a tough one because the staff is nice and the food is fine and they deliver quickly, but at the end of the day they gave my husband the worst food poisoning of his life a few months ago. Maybe it's his fault for ordering a shellfish shumai, but the day after ordering delivery dinner for himself from here, Tom was beyond sick with that horrible kind of food poisoning you don't wish on your worst enemy. To their credit, they said they would remove the item from the menu and refunded his money from the dinner, but it's still pretty hard to get over a place with questionable food safety. I felt really bad writing this because most of my reviews of places are really positive, but ultimately I'd just hate for that to happen anyone else.

A small locally owned restaurant that has amazing food. I had general tsos shrimp and the shrimp were huge. Very good and quick service.

Ahhh, our go-to delivery place. We have been taking the suggestion of other Yelpers and ordering from the Malaysian menu. The reviews were spot on..everything is wonderful. I tried the Rendang awhile back, and it is incredible. I normally don't eat the complimentary rice served with dishes (from anywhere), but the Rendang over rice is mouthwatering. We're ordering from South China tonight. :)

I'll be in the minority here, but really? Bland. Egg rolls were veggie rolls; Hot and sour soup was vinegar-flavored hot water with corn starch. I called and placed an order and asked for rice noodles - emphasizing the fact that my daughter has an egg allergy. The rice noodles with pork...had scrambled eggs mixed in it. Come on folks...stop giving this place 4 stars please. They are decently nice and well organized at the counter. Because the Old Town / Del Ray area lacks quality chinese food, I'll give this place another try eventually.

I recently moved from Queens and was a bit concerned that there wouldn't be a lot of different ethnic foods around Alexandria (which is where I moved to). Alexandria is surely no Queens with regards to the ethnic food scene, but I was excited to discover that there is a Malaysian restaurant just a few blocks from me, which is something I didn't have in New York. Char Kway Teow is one of my favorite dishes so that was an obvious choice for me to order. It was very good -- normally the wife doesn't like noodles but she also thought it was excellent. Even though the restaurant name includes the term "carry out", it definitely has seating and is very clean. It's not like your typical dirty Chinese hole in the wall take out place. If you don't want to go there, delivery is only $1. They also have your standard Chinese stuff but why eat Chinese when they have Malaysian? Be a little adventurous!

Lazy. The fried rice was just rice and bits of eggs. The dumplings were doughy. The chicken wasn't special and the egg roll was just cabbage. Ordered at 11:40 and got my food 50 mins later.

Hands down the best Chinese takeout in the area. Although other reviews say they've been slow with delivery, we've never had to wait longer than 40 minutes. The food is never greasy - it's crispy, i.e., the spring rolls, which we have never ordered but somehow we always get for free, are delightfully crispy and hot when delivered. We also enjoy the general tso's (tried the green jade chicken based on reviews and I can't really tell the difference to be honest), the veggie lo mein, and their friend rice is good too! It's the kind that comes with actual vegetables and egg in it versus just rice that has been fried in soy sauce, like some takeouts have. They also offer the option of white meat only for an extra added dollar. The people are SO friendly. I hope no one feels slighted by this, but given that I'm Asian I think it's ok - I found it really convenient that the man who answered the phone speaks clear English and doesn't rush you. He even helped us figure out the dish my boyfriend wanted, but didn't know the full name of (which I believe is crispy beef szechuan style). Love this place and can't wait to branch out into their Malaysian menu.

The best Chinese food anywhere in VA, DC, or MD. Best chicken and beef dishes, best dumplings in the Mid-Atlantic. The service is excellent, don't let their ok world customer service concepts diswaid you from enjoying your meal. They don't know any other way. God this food is good........

This is my first ever review on Yelp! We love this place. Granted we have never eaten at the restaurant. My wife found it on delivery.com after I grew tired of our previous Chinese delivery establishment. The first time we ordered, I had General Tso's and my wife had Lo Mein. The food was terrific!! and the prices were so reasonable!! We've had some difficulty ordering through delivery.com , but ordering directly over the phone brings the additional benefit of either free spring rolls or sodas. Besides the good food, the people are generally nice and delivery is fast. I ordered from there this afternoon and the food arrived in 10 minutes... I suggest you try.

I just realized I owed my favorite Chinese delivery spot in the Alexandria area a positive review. For ordering, the website is very user friendly and the online menu is accurate. The food is good. A "go to" option for delivery for me.

I was looking for a Malaysian restaurant and ran across this family ran/owned place. The decor is similar to any of the other Chinese take-out place, nothing special. After some debate, I ended up ordering the Malaysian curry chicken noodle soup and beef with basil. I'm not sure what Malaysian food is suppose to taste like...but YUM! The curry chicken noodle was full of flavors and just the right amount of spiciness. The beef with basil was satay-ed with bell peppers and was also a big hit. I'm not sure about the Chinese dishes but the Malaysian dishes are a must try. I'll definitely come back to this place again!

I'm a huge fan of South China Restaurant because their staff seems like one big family, is very friendly, and makes a genuine effort to go out of their way for customers. I've come here to grab take-out during truly foul weather and they've always welcomed me with hot tea. Alexandria is a fairly diverse place and I've noticed that there are often a few language barriers/cultural misunderstandings that occur here. The staff really does try their best, however. It's pretty unique to hear that a waiter has learned Spanish so he can interact better with customers. Wow...learning new things to work better with people. By golly, that is AMERICAN...er...um...cultural competence. The menu offers fairly standard Chinese dishes, but I enjoy the Malaysian side the best. Their curries and soups are fairly spicy, fairly priced, and comforting. The beef with basil is also quite flavorful. Given that this restaurant is so close to where I live, I hope they remain in business for a long time.

The service is fast, and the food is pretty good. I would give it five stars, but some of the sauces are a bit bland, especially anything on broccoli. I love chicken and broccoli, but this one is missing that punch. Any of the thicker chicken dishes are great - orange chicken, General Tso's, etc. Decent prices too. Would recommend.

I'm eating the Green Jade chicken (chef's specialty) with brown rice as we speak, and it's delicious. The service was fast and easy (I did it through the website, takeout). The ONLY reason I'm giving this place 4 stars instead of 5 is because I WISH they'd have more details about each dish. I took risk and ordered the Green Jade Chicken because I happen to like almost all food, but I wish I could've seen what was in it (you know, besides chicken). I don't think any of the dishes I "clicked" on had descriptions, and that's something I need to see when I order food. Other than that, the food is really great.

  • Carol W.

The food is decent with good prices for a carryout. I had the Crispy Beef - it was cooked properly, though way too light on the sauce (you know you want some of that sauce to go on your rice!). Additionally, I always ask for extra spice on mine hoping that they will add a little more zing. Disappointing here since there was nothing extra on mine - in fact my mom's Orange beef was spicier than mine (btw - she doesn't like a lot of spice; makes me wonder if they mixed up the dishes). The order came with your choice of a spring roll or egg roll. We got the spring roll which was good, but nothing special. Though the food was adequate and the price good, I can't say that I will order from here again since I've had carryout from other places that were much better and about the same price.

Excellent food, great service, and generous portions! This place rocks and the people here make all the difference. My favorite here is egg rolls, crab wontons, and Gen Tso's. My wife and I have been never disappointed with the carry-out food. Although some day we would like to dine in so that the food stays hot. We have created 2-3 meals out of one menu item every time we ordered from here. We will definitely be returning here.

I would give this place ZERO STARS if I could. Last night, we ordered dinner around 6:15. It didn't arrive until after 8 pm. So it took two hours from order to delivery. Most of the food was cold. I ordered mu shu vegetables for myself and spent the night in the bathroom with food poisoning. I had a flight scheduled at the crack of dawn today for a job interview. After being up most of the night, I managed to make my flight, but was so dehydrated from the food poisoning that I ended up in the ER instead. Once there, they treated me for food poisoning and dehydration. The various lab tests confirmed food poisoning. Now I am scrambling to rebook my flight. And I don't think I will ever be able to eat mu shu again.

I ordered food from here last night based on reviews. About 5 hours later, I woke up with cramping and was sick all night long. Clearly something I ate from this restaurant was contaminated. It wasn't a bug, I was okay this morning after taking pepto bismol in the middle of the night while getting sick. I called the restaurant today to let them know. I thought they might want to check the meats or the food items I had ordered to see if it was spoiled. The woman told me it wasn't their fault. I do not recommend this place. There are other reviews in here that also mention food poisoning and bad meals. Heed their warning. Update: I just checked this restaurant out on the Virginia Dept. of Health food inspections website. It seems they get checked quite frequently and have numerous violations each visit. Many are related to improper temperature and storage of raw meats. Many are also repeat violations every quarter. Their most recent inspection was about three weeks ago 3/8/13). They seem to have continued Risk Factor Assesment inspections. This is definition of that type of inspection: RISK FACTOR ASSESSMENT INSPECTION: This is a specialized, unannounced inspection during which the EHS will evaluate foodborne illness risk factors and public health interventions to determine compliance with specific critical and non-critical sections of the regulations. See for yourself and don't say your weren't warned: healthspace.com/Clients/…

I ordered Hunan Shrimp and Chicken Fried Rice for delivery. My food came within 30 mins and was hot when it arrived. The hunan shrimp tasted fine but could have used a few more pieces of shrimp. The Fried rice was also fine. I could tell everything was too salty and it isn't something I could order often. Overall this place is in the rotation when I have a Chinese Food craving and I'm too lazy to make it myself.

Good Chinese food option - especially given the poor options in the Alexandria area. The veggie mu shu is pretty darn good. Same w General Tso's chicken. It would be helpful if they could put a description for each menu item - for those of us that like to order delivery - but this is your typical Chinese place that has over 100 items, so that might be difficult.

Downhill experiences x 2. Sigh. We were going along just fine, and then, WHAM! twice in a row terrible food. On the first occasion, I ordered Yum Yum Chicken and I didn't like it at all. I questioned whether I was really eating what I had ordered, but since I had never had it before, I had no reference for what it was supposed to taste like. But whatever I got ended up tasting very much like tomato sauce... not at all what I expected. The second time I ordered Pandan chicken... thinking it was going to be a kind of fried chicken wrapped in pandan leaves... Imagine my surprise when what was delivered to me was the exact same weird dish I got when I ordered Yum Yum chicken! Surely there must be some mistake. We called the restaurant. She told me that they serve a different kind of pandan chicken, not the kind I was talking about. I reiterated the issue with ordering two separate things and both times being brought the same terrible dish. (think leftover dark meat chicken parts that are rubbery and in a very thin tomato tasting sauce with scant vegetables strewn through out) She got frustrated and so did I. So why an update with the same four stars? In the end they brought me something else. The owner came to our door with an alternate dish. We invited her in out of the cold. She explained the differences between north and south regional recipes, and explained why they don't make the pandan-leave wrapped version of Pandan Chicken. She went over the menu and suggested things I might like based on what I usually order and enjoy. She encouraged us to ask a lot of questions when we call to order if we want to try something new. She also said some things I didn't agree with (aka: "the black people like this dish, you will like it") SIGH. But hey, she was trying. So, in the end, it was the exemplary customer service that will make me order from here again... but only when I want curry chicken puffs and basil chicken.

Blah food in big quantities. Pretty sure they got their orders mixed up, as there was zero sesame in my sesame shrimp. Who knows, maybe that's just how they do sesame shrimp--I'll never know, as I'm never ordering from this place again.

Was going to do takeout but decided last minute to eat here. I didn't feel like dragging my food home and having to deal with kinda soggy food. She told me to have a seat, then actually came over and took my order. I wasn't sure why initially because even when I do eat in these kinds of places, I still place my order and then take my food and sit at one of the few tables available. I ordered a very tasty and spicy hot and sour soup along with the sesame chicken. The soup was very good: hearty, rich, full of complex flavors such as the different kinds of mushrooms, broth (perhaps chicken), bamboo shoots, and tofu. The sesame chicken was came out in a platter with a few broccoli florets; enough to feed 2 adults. The sauce was nice and thick, dark in color not orangy, tangy and a little spicy then topped with a smattering of sesame seeds. Everything came hot and fresh and well-seasoned.

South China is an excellent spot - more for carry-out than eating there. The food is the best in that part of town and perhaps in NoVa. Also, they're pretty friendly and pleasant folks that run it.

We have tried so many different Chinese delivery places, and they all seem about the same. Except South China. We got so much food, it was cheap, and way too delicious. I definitely recommend the Cantonese Style Chow Mein (the fried noodles with the sauce and veggies). PLUS, they have online ordering! Which rocks. It's so hard to remember which place is delicious...I'm hoping that writing this review will help me remember. Yum. It's making me hungry just writing about it.

We've been takeout customers for over 3 years and enjoy the quality and variety of their menu and the speedy service. Our complaint is that two recent orders two weeks apart that included Mongolian Beef were made with very sharp, bitter onions. The onions though stir fried were too sharp for our two year old to eat and left us both with mild indigestion. We wonder whether this represents a decline in the quality of onions used (regular yellow vs. sweet) or is just a seasonal phenomenon attributable to use of stored onions during the Winter months. In either case, we recommend that the chef consider soaking or treating the raw onions prior to cooking or otherwise reducing the bitter taste.

The weather was delicious yesterday, so I took a stroll down Mt. Vernon late in the afternoon. I came across this small Chinese/Malaysian restaurant and decided to pop in. I had high hopes--cute interior, friendly staff, reasonable prices, place looks like it's been there for years--but I am sorry to report that I still cannot find good Chinese takeout in Alexandria. I ordered the crab wontons and sesame shrimp. The crab wontons were heavy on the cream cheese, light on the imitation crab. One wonton had a single speck of fake crab. The sesame shrimp had this odd, smoky element in the sauce. Although it was edible, it didn't work for me.

Having never tried Malaysian food before, I put my fate in the hands of the Hindu gods and give this place a try for carryout. I was impressed that I could order on-line, as I sometimes feel intimidated on the phone when calling ethnic restaurants. I don't know where this unease comes from, but I stress that I will mispronounce something or that with screaming grandma slaving in the background throwing pans around, the 15 year old granddaughter on the phone won't be able to catch what I'm saying, and I'll end up with the "specialty" of pickled lamb balls or tripe ceviche. I got the e-mail confirmation for an immediate order, but I gave them 20 minutes, which I figured was fair for a carryout place. When I arrived, the women who served me at the counter were welcomingly friendly, and they immediately handed me my order. Even though I was eating solo, I got two dishes, just in case I didn't like one of them (oh, and maybe because I was really hungry): Penang's Asian Laksa (hot and sour fish noodles) and Rendang (stewed beef in coconut milk.) 1. Admittedly, I wasn't a fan of the Laksa. I'm not much of a rotten fish paste kind of guy, which isn't to say that they made it badly. I'm sure it's supposed to smell like a fish market in on a 95 degree day and taste like a crustacean that sat out in the sun for eight hours. No really; it's just that my impotent, Upstate NY-reared taste buds simply can't appreciate the complexities of southeast Asian garum. It just wasn't my thing, but I encourage others to try it. 2. The Rendang was excellent, however. Curried melt-in-your-mouth, tender beef with lemongrass and coconut milk over rice - mmmm. Next time I'll order it extra spicy.

I've been ordering Chinese from South China a long, long time. in fact, it used to have another name -- The Mandarin Inn -- back when I started. I live in Del Ray and have tried all the other Chinese restaurants and this one is BY FAR superior. Recently, I read a few other people's reviews and decided to try a few new items. So, here are a few of my favorites: Chicken with Basil (Malaysian menu), fried won tons, general tso's chicken (a bit heavy on the sauce, though, so if they bothers use, ask for it light), crab rangoon, beef skewers (from the Pu Pu Platter) and the Chow Foon. My fiancée likes the lo mein, too. I'd steer away from the tofu dishes, I've found the tofu's texture odd -- a bit rubbery. The staff is killer good -- friendly, remembers you, rarely makes mistakes and fixes them if they do. You can also eat in. While I haven't it looks hospitable enough.

This is our default "it's too hot" or "I'm too tired" or "I am starving" carryout place. The staff is exceedingly friendly, whether you eat in or carryout and it seems they make an effort to get to know their customers. I love local businesses with that kind of attitude! The prices are very fair. Items like Wonton soup for $1.50 and lomein for less than $5 at lunch are unbeatable. The flavors and prep are always fast, clean, hot and just the right amount of indulgent ingredients to qualify for comfort food levels of "greasy Chinese take out." Classic and standard Chinese restaurant recipes. When we eat in, we always down our fair share of their hot tea, complimentary with the meal. We love beef and broccoli, the Buddhist's delight and moo shu pork (which they call moo shi pork). When one of us has a cold, we run to get a large ($3) of wonton soup, this household's equivalent of chicken soup! They also feature a few Malaysian dishes, which we've found are hit or miss. The prices allow you to experiment without feeling bad when you opt to leave some on the plate. We'll be back ... probably this week ... Credit cards accepted over $10.

The Chinese food we enjoyed was great, and the service was very prompt and friendly. Everything tasted hot, flavorful, and fresh. I definitely want to go back and try some of their Malaysian items. The staff also greeted one regular customer after another by their names - what a nice touch!

Rendang! Dang! This stuff rocks!! After reading the Yelp reviews it seemed like the Rendang had to be tried and I'm glad I did. Yummy!! Super fast hot delivery, online ordering and good food reasonably priced. I'll definitely be ordering from South China again.

The website ordering is awesome - easy to navigate and you can even pay online. The menu has all of the standards, plus a nice selection of specialty (including Malaysian) choices. Lo-Mein was lightly dressed, which is nice, and the noodles had a nice chew to them. General Tso Chicken/Beef was crisp and tender. Garlic Broccoli was really delicious. Love the brown rice option with the entrees. Overall, great Asian delivery. Highly recommended. The food arrived really quickly and was super hot (bonus!). Plenty of leftovers for tomorrow, too (nice portions).

Love the chicken curry puffs! The Rendang is delish too (stewed eef in coconut milk); could use a bit more spice, ut the meat was tender and flavorful. I wasn't a huge fan of the chickjen with Basil, but I may e more used to the thai asil chicken..it wasn't bad, just not what I'm used to. I've ordered twice in the last two months and will continue to try more thing son the Malaysian menu!

5-star malaysian! Hidden deep within this delicious Chinese eatery/takeout is a fabulous taste of Malaysia. Laksa, acar amun, curry puff, pasembor, kweh teeoy, rendang curry are some of the highlights and if you ask nicely (or call ahead) they might whip up something special not on the menu (Malaysian fish or chicken curry) Been a fan since they owned 3 spots but am glad they consolidated to 1 (selfishly glad because I can find authentic Malaysian all the time here) And the Chinese here is awesome too, but when you're feeling adventurous, flip the menu over.

Stick to the Malaysian menu: the food is very good, the prices reasonable and the customer service is fantastic. My food was running late, no big deal, but they gave me free chicken rolls (which are AWESOME) to compensate. Ordered: Chicken Curry Puff: little triangles of puff pastry stuffed with a smooth potato/chicken/curry mix. Sort of like samosa filling, but deliciously curry flavor. Beef w/Basil: seriously delicious. Beef was tender, dish was redolent of thai basil, and lots of veg that is not overcooked. Vegetables were crisp/tender and the dish had that wok hei thing going. Sayang Meehon: comfort dish of rice noodles, stir fried w/dried tofu and shrimp. Reminds me of Filipino Pancit (which is why i ordered it) but also had that smoky wok hei thing that makes everything better. Free: Chicken rolls: ground and spiced chicken wrapped in bean curd skin, deep fried and served with a sweet chili dipping sauce. Oh yes. Can't wait to try the curries next.

We've eaten here for years and the food is great. Unfortunately there is another new restaurant in Alexandria with the same name that isn't anywhere the quality of this one. So be careful that you go to the real South China on Mt. Vernon Ave.

  • F L.

As far as take-out goes, South-China is consistently good both in service and food. On one occasion, I had the singapore noodles with bean curd and really enjoyed them. The bean curd is cut into strips and fried to perfection. The singapore noodles were well prepared and flavorful. On another occasion, I had a spring roll, an egg roll, and bean curd pad thai. I was curious about the rolls, so I tried one of each. The egg roll (which has shrimp in it) is much yummier, though both are good. I was very pleased with both my experiences. Upon my second return I was remembered and warmly greeted. This place knows customer service. The portions are large and prices are fair.

I have to go 5 stars even though the decor/atmosphere here is nothing to write home about. Just a little Chinese take out looking place. This is the best Chinese I have EVER had. We order take out here a lot and we also go to the restaurant when we can. The family who owns it is so nice and friendly and the food is excellent. Favorites include: Crispy Beef, String beans, Eggplant, chicken & Vegetables and we even tried some Malaysian last time and were not dissappointed. Really top notch-delish! You also get something free when you order and we always go for the Spring Rolls. I get menus for Chinese in my mail all the time and I just toss them because nothing beats South China.

Our new favorite neighborhood Chinese carryout (just can't compete with Peking Gourmet, though.) Easy online ordering, speedy delivery even for Sat night. Cashew chicken included zucchini, a first for me and nice to have some vegies. Sesame Beef was bathed in brown sauce, good but meat a bit tough and definitely not crispy. In contrast, spring rolls hot and crispy. Great Szechuan beans. How many times over the years have we driven by this restaurant and never given a thought to ordering food there - it always seemed so deserted. We were pleasantly surprised. It beats other local offerings.

I had high hopes for this restaurant, but after two extremely blah experiences I gave up. The people are very nice- if you're waiting for takeout they'll give you tea and the delivery is speedy. The regular Chinese menu (which is what I ordered from on both occasions) is extremely disappointing in execution from flavor to quality of veggies. Teh dumplings were pretty good, so it has that going for it. I'm told Malaysian is the way to go with this particular establishment, but I didn't make it that far.

3.5 Stars Do yourself a favor and order from the Malaysian menu. They also have the Americanized Chinese menu, but they're thrilled when you order the Malaysian food...because, well, they're Malaysian. It's pretty good for takeout, which really hits the spot sometimes. The lady on the phone was super friendly. She gave us two free Cokes for ordering the delivery minimum, she understood us easily, and asked if we liked it really spicy. We eagerly replied "yes!" The food came really quickly and was steaming hot. We ordered the Malaysian Curry Lemak (chicken, peas, mushrooms, onion, with coconut milk) -- slightly sweet, spicy, with white meat chicken that was remarkably moist and tender. The Char Koay Teow (stir-fried flat rice noodles with shrimp) was even better. This is our go-to Asian delivery joint since we're in the neighborhood. I'm eager to try Panang's Asian Laksa (hot and sour fish noodle soup), Rendang (stewed beef in coconut milk), Pandan Chicken (cooked with chili, turmeric, and pandan leaf), and am curious about the Curry Rose Chicken (special curry sauce in coconut milk).

Really, really good. It's always nice to have Chinese in my neighborhood and they do a lot of dishes well.

This is my favorite Chinese take-out type restaurant in the area. The people working there recognized me after my second visit and that was after a couple of weeks had gone by in between visits. The dining-in option is not bad; there's a few tables and it's clean. It's definitely better than most spots around here. The food is better than most I've had (and I'm Asian, I should know! *wink*). You can't go wrong with anything on the Chef's menu and I particularly like their Hunan Chicken. There's only one other Chinese restaurant that can challenge this, but this one wins out based on price and uniqueness.

South China is THE go-to Chinese/pan-Asian carryout/delivery in my house. They are more than reasonably priced, have an enormous variety of dishes (with huge portions), are reliable, provide quick delivery, the food is not greasy or MSG-misery inducing and is delicious.

I just sampled the Mongolian Beef, Rendang, and Yum Yum Shrimp off the Malaysian menu which were all delicious. Tasted very authentic. The quality of the food was great. I definitely recommend this place.

I'm a Chinese food snob, it's true. I've learned over the last 4-5 years what real Chinese is, and it is certainly not real authentic Chinese food that is served at South China. But, for a local carry out with easy delivery and decent prices, this is the best option I've found in the South Arlington area. I particularly like the kung pao and that's what I usually order. Most dishes are good, though a few have been not so good. I would not recomment chow fun or mongolian beef... but those dishes are rarely well done at a typical carry out place. TIP: For a sit-down Chinese meal in Arlington, try China Garden in Rosslyn. Very good dim sum and it's the closest thing we've found to a Flushing or Chinatown style New York restaurant.

Lots of places have great food. This one has fantastic food and service and they are just nice people. It located out of Del Ray proper towards Old Town, but its worth the trip. Its surprising when something normal like Chicken Fried Rice is AMAZING.

Looks and smells clean on the inside. Not super fancy but better than most carryouts. The two stars are for that. Service was adequate, not rude or super friendly. The food was not so great. Ordered the General Tso's Chicken early Sunday afternoon (carryout). A little less than "ok". Never had all dark meat in this dish before. Tasted like something they had left over. No vegetables in the fried rice at all. Usually you get peas carrots or onions. Nothing. They got my money once. It won't happen again.

It isn't fine dining - but for what it is, it's quite good. Every neighborhood should have a place where you can grab a quick meal, and South China goes a step beyond that by offering a Malaysian menu in addition to its Chinese menu, with some interesting additional choices.

Really wow!! I ordered Gen. Tsao's Triple Treat. Exceptionally flavorful, politely spicy. Meal arrived quickly at the hotel, still hot out of the Wok.

One of the better Chinese delivery restaurants in Alexandria. I didn't try any of the house specialties but everything I ordered was very good.

Their online ordering system is fabulous and very convenient and the food is delicious! I have one complaint though and that is the staff. Incredibly rude to the extent where they will not give you any utensils without double-checking your bag, and taking out the food to confirm they have not already given you any utensils and they get upset if you pay with a bill bigger than a $20. I'm sorry, but I see nothing wrong paying with a $50 if I paid $23.50 for my food. Better customer service is indeed needed.

I used to be a loyal customer for over 10 years. Recently their food has become disgusting and I will never go back. I believe they have cut corners and have a new cook. The General Taos chicken I order is now crunchy and dry. Not happy at all.

We tried the Malyasian. Not a bad alternative to Chinese. You can order online and delivery is just a buck! Jim gives them a 4 and Mo gives them a 3.

We have ordered food for delivery from South China on 15 occasions in the past year, and it's always been great. We always order off the Malaysian menu. Delivery is fast and the people are friendly. This isn't the place to go if you're a self-professed "Chinese food snob" but it's perfect for us normal folks who like good food.

I ordered the the Char Koay Teow and it was delicious. This is def a better option than your typical chinese carry-out. A decent place for the Alexandria area.

Just had take-out from South China again last night and it pleased my foodie friend too. We had the Szechuan Pork in addition to old favs. It's heat packs a moderate punch (I didnt' ask for extra spicy) and the celery, carrot and green onion slightly crunchy and beautifully julienned like the pork with no stray fat on it in savory, spicy sauce. I've upped it to 5 stars b-c they always get the order right, on time and its piping hot still when I get home 20 min. later. If I mostly do take-out, who cares about the decor?

I ordered Hunan Chicken at least once a week to get some Chinese food for lunch at work. It is not authentic Chinese, but tastes great and it is served hot. I give them a call ahead and my order is almost always ready when I get there which is just 3 minutes away. Friendly Staff.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
