My family and I have been going here since they opened over 5-6 yrs ago... They have watched my kids grow up and now they're gone. My husband and I live near southern Maryland and would only eat Chinese food from this carryout restaurant (except we ate in) but we have always loved their food. The wonton soup was amazing, until today. I immediately could taste something different, the wonton looked terrible, the meat on the inside was disgusting. I normally order the general tso chicken for my daughter and that's not hard to mess up. My husband normally orders beef and broccoli and it didn't taste the same as it has for all these years. I normally order the dragon and phoenix but opted for shrimp and scallops in garlic sauce. Horrendous. I have ordered it before but it had been a while. I ate maybe a quarter of the portion they served if that. The shrimp fried rice used to taste fresh and never overcooked. Today it was overcooked and nothing fresh about it. The vibe of this place was different and I inquired about Michelle. Who was on vacation -- hmm.. for 3 weeks tho?! Sounds like a cover up. Asked the new male waiter, if they were under new management. He says he was new and yes the owners left but the two ladies behind the register were consistently saying no. Sounds like to me, that they have big shoes to fill after the previous owners left. I see them losing all the customers the previous owners worked so hard to gain. They were personable and welcoming with great customer service. At the end of dinner I asked for boxes and had to say 4x that I will pack my own food even after the waiter insisted and still started to pack my food. I don't like other people to pack my food if I can help it. Sad to say, after 6 years of loving this place, I will NOT be back ever again. Unless the previous owners come back to fix what they fluffed up.

My wife got take out after they 1st opened and we both agreed that their food was pretty mediocre. Being in the mood for Chinese last night, we decided to give it another go. Based on Yelp reviews, I ordered the Shredded Duck Fried Rice ****, Crispy Shredded Beef *** 1/2 and General Tso's Chicken *** 1/2 (both medium hot). All in all we both agreed that our meal was above average to good, which is not bad for a local joint. I will bump up the hotness next time as the medium setting was on the mild side for me. I ordered from their on-line menu which included a free appetizer, Crab Rangoon * (you get what you pay for). Food was delivered around 1/2 hour later, hot & ready to eat. Generous portions, enough for some duck FR for breakfast and the rest for lunch. Not the healthiest fare, but a good indulgence for the occasional craving (like a 5 Guys Burger). We will order again after I get my arteries cleared.

I've had better Chinese food at shopping malls (and that's not saying much). The orange chicken was overly breaded. The crispy shredded chicken might have been ok if it weren't overcooked and dry. I guess they have the crispy part down! It could have also used more sauce. The crab rangoon was also disappointing. My search for decent Chinese food continues...

Found this place when looking for a replacement for the Ginger Beef on Columbia Pike, which was my hands down favorite in the area until it quit delivering. The delivery from online orders is much faster than expected; the website said 60-90 minutes, but it's never taken more than about 30 minutes for my food to get here. The ho fun is delicious and one of my personal favorites. The lo mein is acceptable, as is the fried rice. Food is pretty much standard.

I ordered "for delivery" today. I found 3 strands of hair in my soup as I opened up the container. It's too much of a hassle to have then redeliver soup... good thing I ordered dumplings because that's all I ate. :(

I ordered lunch from here today and my coworker went to pick it up, when the bag arrived there was no sweet and sour sauce for my Sweet and Sour chicken. I called them to tell them there was no sauce in my bag, he started talking to someone in the kitchen and gets back on phone with me...he says maam the kitchen said they did put sauce in the bag.I said......... Ummmmmm NO!!! There is no sweet and sour sauce in my bag I can assure you of that sir, I m taking a lunch break and would not waste my time to call if there was some in the bag, can you please bring it to me? He said No, you can come pick it up! I told him I was at lunch and had no time. He said ok, I ll put your name done and give you a free spring roll next time!!!!! That was it, he didnt apologies....just offered me a free $1.35 spring roll.

I believe this is no MSG. I feel like one of the healthy clean Chinese restaurants out here. Love it. I will keep coming back.

Today i placed an order for about thirty five dollars of food. I inquired about a complaint that i made weeks ago about the delivery guy demanding a $9 tip. When i complained i was told the matter would be rectified upon next visit however when i called in the order today and mentioned the promise that was made the order taker became beligerant. Screaming and insisting that i posted a review to yelp. I certainly did write a review as this is american and yelp is a forum that allows me the freedom to do just that. I thought that i would give them a second chance, however after this blatant show of disrepect not only am i taking the liberty to write another yelp review but i will follow up with a complaint with comsumer affairs. I wonder if i were a businessman , as one reviewer observed that the receive personalize treatment, would i have been better treated?

Solid place for low cost fast food Chinese. Can't beat the dinner combos. Folks are nice. I also like that I can order online.

The restaurant has very quick delivery if you're located within 2 - 3 miles, I usually get my order in 15-20 minutes. They offer online ordering which is always a plus but when calling in they are friendly. The food however is just plain. There isn't anything to it. I've tried the Hunan chicken, fried rice, pad thai and sesame chicken. I find myself having to put chili peppers on my meals to make them more tasty. I do sense that the restaurant is clean and the ingredients are relatively fresh but the flavors are just not very good. My search continues for a great Chinese food place in Old Town.

We were in Alexandria for the weekend and didn't feel like going out one night. Finding a great place for some Chinese delivery was just what we wanted. Ordering on their website was easy and we both could find everything we wanted. The free items were a nice touch and the dinner combos are a great deal and just enough food. Delivery was quick and the delivery guy even came up all the way to our room at the hotel. The food was all very good Chinese takeout. And for being delivery we were really happy to see it was all still piping hot. If we're back in the area and in the mood for some good takeout, we'll get Shanghai Peking again.

Disappointing! Giving 2 stars instead of 1 for friendly service and fast delivery. Absolutely no flavor. My husband and I tried several appetizers and two entrees and were not impressed with anything. It's quite possibly the least satisfying meal I've ever had... Sad. :(

  • Min P.

Shanghai Peking is my favorite Chinese delivery place. Primarily because of the food, which is satisfying with well balanced flavors, and never overly rich. On top of that, they have friendly and accommodating service. Their food tastes and feels homemade maybe even by a loving Chinese grandmother. I highly recommend it if you are in the area.

*Side note this review is from 4/19. Afternoon triple delight, had me smacking my mama cuz it was so good. I hope she forgives me thanks to kiki for heads up

Great little lunch spot, not too expensive for Old Town either. Fried Wontons are a must! I wish their Kung-Pao Chicken was a little better, but the total lunch package is definitely worth trying if you've never been. I'd recommend you throw in a couple more bucks to the order to get the pork fried rice though (dinner serving vs. lunch serving). It's definitely worth it.

  • The Boyz J.

Very good food. The spring rolls, crab Rangoon, chicken and cabbage, and general Tso delight are a few of the delicious items. But they seem to rotate the wait staff and the current lady (with wild hair) is rude, unprofessional and I would suspect racist! She always ask or comments about a tip. Here's a tip, you get what you deserve, we are not obligated to give you anything extra. And if you don't give us rice with our meal or refill or drinks you don't deserve a good tip! You will lose customers if you keep this server around.

    (3)
  • Alexa S.

Not really impressed. The orange chicken was extremely spicy. General Tso's was not very good. The Pad Thai was very bland. The green curry was very spicy and didn't have much flavor otherwise. The menu is so big that quantity seems to be more important than quality. Will keep searching for chinese take-out.

Just called their delivery and the food was just so flavorless and below the standard that drove me to write this review here. Tried Double Cooked Pork, which was not cooked using pork belly , not sure if that was pork...The Shredded Chicken Szechuan Style was just so plain and greasy...ek.I'll just leave it that. Gave it two stars cuz BF liked the Crispy Salt Pepper Chicken and they didn't charge a delivery fee. But I def. would not spend money on food like that again.

  • Kiki M.

This was our second chance for Shanghai...and I'm glad we did it! Tonight we ordered the crispy chicken (4 stars), the general Tso's chicken (4 stars), vegetable egg rolls (3 stars) and the hot and sour soup (2 stars)...much better than the first time we ate here 8 months ago. The food is hot and fast and inexpensive and the bonus is that it's only a block from our house.

My last 3 take-away orders were incorrectly prepared. Their luncheon special list states "served with fried rice & egg roll." My orders came with white rice, with or without the egg roll. My last 2 orders: the sweet & sour tofu was neither; completely bland. Plenty of bright, orange colored tofu with very few pieces of green pepper and onion. The sesame tofu listed under Vegetables came with no vegetables. I will definitely not order from this restaurant again.

great place if you just wanna stop by and grab some quick "chinese" food. (quotations refer to the fact that chinese carry out food isn't really chinese) Love their Crispy Beef/Chicken. I think that's all I've ever gotten there lol... They're also open late. :)

Tried Shanghai Peking for the first time. The delivery was fairly quick - less than 1/2 hour but, the food was not as hot (temperature) as it could have been. We ordered the Hot & Sour soup - this was tasty but, very thick. Even after heating it up it was still to thick. It had the congealed consistency like when many other hot & sour soups come out of the fridge. We really didn't care for the texture and we will be reluctant to order this again. We also got the Basil Fried Rice based on other reviews and it was very good. We will get this again but, be careful when matching flavors. If you are getting something blander like Chicken Chow Mein (which we did) the flavor of the Basil Fried Rice may work against it whereas traditional fried rice tends to compliment. But, this is really worth getting. It has a nice spiciness to it. The Chicken Chow Mein was good. The last item was the Vegetable Egg Foo Young. This was very good and not greasy which to me is a sign of a good, hot wok. Egg Foo Young typically comes with a thick sauce. There sauce was tasty but, also way to thick and it also needed to be heated up which did not change the thickness. All in all, a good meal at a reasonable price - this came in at about $31. We will try other menu items in the future.

I think that my office may keep Shanghai Peking in business. We regularly order for the whole office, and they deliver to Old Town within 45 minutes most days. I have discovered the basil fried rice - and it has become my new favorite! I also think their pork egg rolls and pork dumplings are really delicious. Don't hesitate to special order - they are very accommodating, and I've never had a problem with getting something made the way I want.

Went in with my girl for dinner on a Saturday night, and pretty much had the place to ourselves. The old towne address is not in the heart of the action, so there is not much around here except a boxing gym and a gas station. I think carry-out is their biggest trade. However, their service was delightful. Our server was so polite, friendly, and answered all our questions about the menu. 4 stars: I had the moo shu chicken. I recommend it. (skip the lemonade though)

My office was working on a Saturday and I ordered lunch for about 20 people. Everything was perfect! The order was 100% correct and ready very quickly. Everybody was very happy with their lunch and there was plenty of leftovers. Well done Shanghai Peking! Thank you for the great service!

Shanghai Peking is perhaps the first Chinese take-out I've ever gotten where I didn't actually feel gross and weighted down with sub par ingredients after I had eaten my full. It has definitely become our solid go-to Chinese take-out for nights after a long day at work. I LOVE pad thai, and I must say that their pad thai is perhaps the best I've ever had. Not heavy at all - light and flavorful.

Don't bother. We received a menu in the mail today and thought we'd try them out. The delivery guy wouldn't deliver all the way to our door on the 3rd floor. He said the building door system was too complicated (simple phone dial pad and you dial 3 numbers). We told him it was crazy he wouldn't deliver to our door. We called and spoke to the owner and she said she wouldn't send him anymore. Give me a break. The food was ok. Nothing to write home about. Still searching for decent Chinese food delivery in Del Ray.

as my buddy said before the chicken or beef crispy is so good! the yellow mustard is really good as well. One of the cleaner Chinese restaurants and really good tea!

Thought I'd try out a new delivery place. My order took over an hour to get here, and it wasn't at a busy meal time of day. They forgot my egg roll. The chicken lo mein was kinda fishy--yeah, I said the CHICKEN lo mein was kinda fishy! And otherwise, did have much flavor. The Crispy Spicy Beef was excellent--the only saving grace.

I ordered delivery tonight, waited 30 minutes, and the driver called to tell me that he refuses to bring it to my door (of a luxury condo) and that I had to come outside to his vehicle or else he would cancel the order. When I called the restaurant, they were not helpful and hung up without even attempting to rectify the situation. If you want a place that actually delivers, do NOT use them!

  • Lea C.

This is the first Chinese delivery I've ordered since moving to town. It was nothing to write home about, but it wasn't bad. There were, however, some very bizarre things about the order that make me think twice about calling them up again. I ordered spring rolls and General Tso's chicken. Pretty standard fare. I asked for extra duck sauce on the side, because I am pretty liberal with my duck sauce. When I unpacked my order, the broccoli for my General Tso's packaged separately in a plastic baggie, and it smelled heinous. WTF? Shouldn't my broccoli be a) not spoiled and b) in the delicious sauce it should be part of? Also, my side of duck sauce was nowhere to be found. What I did have was 3 packets of duck sauce. Not okay. Seriously. I dunno what the deal is, but I honestly don't think I could give them specific enough instructions to actually get what I want.

I've ordered take-out from here pretty regularly, and this is definitely my favorite chinese take out in Old Town. The food is consistently good, not too oily, not too fried, and well seasoned. The price is decent, and their delivery service is very efficient. I also like the fact that you can order from them online.

I tried this place and it instantly became my go-to for Chinese in Old Town Alexandria. I moved here a couple months ago and lucked out when this was the only place open and wiling to delivery to me at 10pm on a Thursday night. The food was excellent! I had hot & sour soup, crab rangoon, and the basil fried rice. The basil fried rice had a really unique flavor. It has a low-level spice and the basil was a perfect balance for it. I will definitely be ordering it again!

We consistantly order out and dine-in at Shaghai Peking. Seems to be family operated and the lady that waits tables 90% of the time is extra friendly and always remembers us. The hot and sour soup is good and everything we've ordered is tasty. We fell in love with this place upon our first delivery order when we used a coupon from a flier. They honored the coupon and then the delivery man told us to keep it for next time. We still have it and we still use it. Classy, nice, hardworking folks who we are happy to support with our business.

I know a lot of people like this place, but it's probably due to the lack of viable alternatives for Chinese food in / around Alexandria, and even into DC. I grew up in Hong Kong, so I hope I can say I have a credible frame of reference. This place tries hard, gives good portions, and is reasonably priced. The staff is friendly and helpful too, but it's definitely just your run-of-the-mill American Chinese restaurant / take-out, and nothing more, in terms of food quality. I have eaten here three times: 1) Ordered only the steamed meat dumplings to go -- the meat was tasty inside, but the wrapping was thick and doughy. 2) Sat down for dinner around Chinese New Year, and ordered the Dragon and Phoenix (chicken and shrimp combo) -- both were WAY too spicy, and had to be washed down with water and rice with every bite. People who can tolerate very spicy foods will probably love it, but I couldn't taste anything BUT the spiciness. 3) Sat down for dinner tonight again, and opted for the most basic, traditional fare - chicken with cashew nuts. Again, good portion with lots of meat, but it was so salty that four hours later I'm still thirsting for water every 15 minutes. I don't want to tell people to avoid this place, as they do a decent job. I've given it plenty of chances to impress me, but it just doesn't cut it.

YESSSS!! I can't believe I didn't know about these place earlier. I have been looking for a good Chinese place in the DC area for YEARS and every place has come up short until now. Not only does this place have healthier options for those of you watching what you eat (including lots of veggie options), but they it also has the delicious, fatty American Chinese food I remember from my childhood. Plus, it's very reasonably priced, you can order delivery online, AND it's clean! Super fast delivery. I've had General Tsao's, chicken and veggies, crab rangoon, and egg drop soup to name a few. All delicious. Oh man I might have to order delivery tonight.

Went there because it looks clean from the street. Restaurant is relatively new and indeed clean, but the food has no flavor. We used heaps of salt, pepper, soy sauce, and hot sauce to make the food palatable. One of the worst Chinese food around. If you are local, go to Asian Wok up the street (recommend Take Out ONLY), older building, but their food at least have great favors.

    (1)
  • Caitrin S.

Really good, basic, American Chinese food. We usually get sesame chicken, but other stuff is good too. Nothing fancy here and not the best Chinese I've had, but a nice spot for takeout. Service is fast and friendly. I'd avoid the fried rice.

  • Matt D.

Very good Chinese food. We started ordering here more frequently after having the Singapore Chow Mei Fun noodles (HIGHLY RECOMMEND). Actually all of their curry dishes are pretty good. I'm a fan of the online ordering too.

  • Ian P.

We ordered dinner for delivery the other night. Food was delivered in less than 30 minutes. We ordered wonton soup, steamed dumplings, cashew chicken, and chow fun beef. The wonton soup and dumplings were great, their meat made them very tasty. The cashew chicken was good. The chow fun beef was very bland, we wouldn't order it again. This is the first chinese food we have ordered since moving here so we'd probably try and find a better place before we go back. Overall, we'd try it again if we wanted quickly delivered chinese food.

  • Erin D.

We went last night for the first time and had the egg drop soup, wonton soup, Mongolian beef and the chicken and eggplant in garlic sauce. Our waitress was very pleasant and attentive, our order was prepared quickly and all four items were very yummy. I ended up having to take half of the chicken and eggplant home because we had so much food and our waitress said she'd bring a box. When she came over, she said, "I put some more steamed rice in the box for you." I immediately thought, "SCORE!" If I had one complaint, it would be that the Mongolian beef had a 2:1 green onion to beef ratio. Otherwise, we had an excellent dinner. We'll definitely be back.

  • Diana Z.

Went here today with my husband because it's right around the corner from our new condo. There isn't much in terms of atmosphere, but the food was really good and the service was excellent. We both got the lunch specials that come with rice (we opted for the brown rice for $1 extra) and a very good egg roll. I got the cashew chicken and my husband got the sesame chicken. It was very inexpensive, too - a little over $7 each for a really good amount of food. The only issue was that about a half hour later my stomach started to hurt. I'm not sure if it was from this food or something else. I'm kind of sensitive to the type of oil a restaurant uses, so that could be the issue.

  • Annie L.

Let's just make it known that I am Chinese rating a Chinese restaurant. And it just wasn't good. All I wanted to cure my hangover was some General Tso chicken, wonton soup and an egg roll. The only thing good was the fortune cookie. From one Chinese to another, I expected crispy chicken, a hot egg roll and not to find a staple in my wonton soup... Yes, a staple. Unfortunately that's all she wrote.

Food was good! Not the best not the worst. If you try to order online and the system tells you it's too far- they'll deliver if you call. Very nice! We had egg drop soup- good Boneless spare ribs- meh Sweet and sour shrimp - good Fried rice - good Delivery was ok, a little longer than quoted but still within an acceptable time.

Deliciousness: The final frontier These are the voyages of the Foodie, Enterprise Its 5 star yum mission To explore strange new worlds of flavor To seek out new foods and new hot spots To boldly go where no foodie has gone before I ordered delivery here, and although the driver was very fast and the food came to my door warm, my order was just so so. I ordered egg rolls, chicken fried rice, and moo shu pork. My second Chinese takeout requirement was met as soon as I opened the bag: "Houston, we are a go for lunch tomorrow." Yes, there was at least enough for two, if not three meals, and I was confident that I had gotten my money's worth. I dove right into my moo shu pork, a succulent explosion of rich earthy flavor that was definitely sending my taste-buds to the moon and back. "Mission Control, status check on the moo shu pork...Everything is A.Okay. We are a go for dinner." My moo shu pancakes were warm and soft, which is a must in any moo shu endeavor. This discovery, along with the fact that the texture of my moo shu pork was perfect and not at all watery like some places serve up, had my hopes and dreams of a better Chinese takeout tomorrow firing on all thrusters. The next stage of our interstellar flight to Chinese food goodness was the egg roll. (Yes, I know that the egg roll is pretty much an Chinese American invention, but who cares, it is one of my favorite parts of the meal). I bit into what was a pretty meager-looking egg roll only to discover more doughy crust than yummy center; my egg roll was a slightly undercooked. "Houston, we have a problem." I chomped into my second egg roll to see if this was just an egg roll anomaly....More of the same. "Houston, we are showing flashing red lights on our main yummy sensors. Please advise!" Taking direction from my gastronomic Mission Control, I proceeded to Shanghai Peking's chicken fried rice, which although flavorful, came off a little dry for my taste. "Houston, we have dryness in the fried rice. Mission Control, please advise if we should abort this mission? Confirm on the negative, Mission Control...proceeding with flavor trajectory in minus ten." I wish that I could say that this dinning mission was an entire success, but the quality of my fried rice and egg rolls was really just average and prevented me from planting my flag on the terrain of exceptional yumminess. However, sometimes just returning from and surviving such a foodie mission is success enough. All things considered, I haven't entirely scrapped the idea of one day returning to Shanghai Peking's flavor planet, but for now, I know that there are other worlds out there, other foodie adventures to be explored. So I plan to boldly go where no foodie has gone before. "Houston, we're ready for launch. Begin countdown."

Food wears very good and service to match. Definitely will come back. Had General tso's with white meat and my partner had chicken in garlic sauce, both very good. Ordered par fried dumpling which were on point. The wonton soup was the best I've had in years.

I love the Chinese food there, especially spicy food! They have kind of sauce and very transitional!

Went here today for lunch because a few co-workers ordered and the smell around the office pushed me into checking it out. I dined in and got the General Tso's lunch special with a can of soda. It was $10, was expecting it to be slightly less, but no big deal there. The staff was very nice and the place was clean. Unfortunately I wasn't blown away by the food. The General Tso's were really small pieces, I'm use to larger pieces. I felt like I was eating mostly batter with sauce. The sauce was a little spicy for my liking, but, General Tso's is traditionally spicy, so that's my error for not asking to tone it down some. The rice was ok and the egg roll was bland. I wish I could say better things, but I think I'll enjoy the smell if my co-workers order again but go elsewhere.

Me and my friend went for a quick lunch and it turned out to be longer than we expected. We ordered appetizers and got those rather quickly. But our main dish took too long. We sat there and watched the other 2 people that were in there get their food but ours never came out. We asked for the check and got up to pay for our appetizers. That's when the waitress informed us that our main dish was ready. I asked if it was ready why didn't you bring it to us. They informed us that they were waiting for us to finish our appetizers. Clearly we were finished! On another note the sesame balls were good!

Best take out place in the Old Town area, everything on the menu is great. I usually get the Orange Chicken which is amazing. I usually take out but have had delivery and it is very speedy.

  • Clarence J.

The staff members are so nice that I wish I felt more positively toward Shanghai Peking, but I really was unimpressed by the food. To me, the flavors were unbalanced and the dishes occasionally tasted like they were missing ingredients. The small place was clean and bright, and as I mentioned, the staff was excellent; unfortunately, service alone won't make me return to a restaurant.

This place is a Chinese delivery blessing straight from God himself. The food is such good quality I want to eat it every day for the rest of my life. I will never order from another Chinese delivery again. Thank you for changing my life for the better.

Ordered takeout from here before they closed. Was here for a work trip and the cook kindly stayed back as I picked up my order before closing. Food was great and they even added free chicken dumplings whixh were delicious! I had been ao stressed and this was essentially the only decent meal I ate that day. If ever in the area, I will definitely be back. Good prices, good portion and good food! It was hot and steaming still when I brought it back to my hotel.

  • Chris C.

I've only gotten takeout from this place twice but it is what it is: Sold American Chinese Food. You get a ton of food per dinner combo and sometimes they throw in a few free eggrolls etc. I would say each meal is enough for dinner and a lunch tomorrow which can be great when you're trying to be lazy on a Sunday. Also, they're pretty quick so if you order online, it should be done in 10 minutes. If you're in the area and craving some American Chinese Food, definitely check out Shanghai Peking. It certainly hits the spot.

Placed a large lunch order for the office. They were timely and all orders were correct. They even gave an extra 3 egg and spring rolls. The food was... good but not excellent. Somewhere in the middle. I had the Triple Delight lunch special and it solid. I must say tho... their Fried Rice was legit!!! Veggies and Eggs... If you live in Old Town, this is a top 3 Carry-out... or "Chinese restaurant".

Compared to NYC, where the neighborhood Chinese food is some of the best you'll find in the country, this place is just meh... Its good because of the location but besides that the food is just meh. The staff seems nice enough. The flavors are muddled and the food is over/under spiced. I order here a lot because of its proximity and speed of delivery but they consistently get the orders wrong, seeming to always forget a dish or a specific request (like sauce on the side). They have coupons but are unwilling to honor them (e.g. if $15 gets you one free soda then $30 should get you two.) Apparently this logic doesn't make sense to them)

This place used to be much better when Michele and her family ran it. Now prices are up and the food quality is down. The man that is there (I assume he is the owner?) always has a sour look on his face and seems to have no personality. The waitstaff appear to lack experience and sometimes are just annoying. No thanks to this place, Americanized Chinese food is bad enough on its own without going through this hassle.

As you can tell by the 3 updates I've now provided for Shanghai Peking---- I LOVE this place. Friendly, fresh ingredients, and delicious. However---they really outdid themselves with their steamed pork buns, which are not on the menu. I got them for the first time today---and they're a cross between a cha su bao and a soup dumpling. Absolutely heavenly. My only complaint: that they aren't always on the menu.

Now we're talkin'! I had the sesame chicken, and my associate had the chicken low mein. These were both very good dishes. We ordered delivery through Yelp, and it was here in no time flat. I'lol be eating here again when I'm in Alexandria.

Fresh and hot. Server attentive to our special requests. Not a big or fancy place to sit in but great food, served promptly and with a smile. Worth walking a few blocks off King Street.

I talked to Michele Lin at Sumo. She said that her family has sold Shanghai Peking and are concentrating on Sumo. My go-to places for Chinese American food are now Hunan Garden in the PTO area or Big Panda in Gum Springs.

Extremely rude staff. My family has ordered from here several times and all but one time we have had issues with the staff. The food is ok. But it's not worth dealing with staff that hangs up the phone on you prematurely or a driver who doesn't hand you the food in your hand because he doesn't have change for a large bill and has to settle for the cash we do have and we weren't able to tip. Regardless, we are customers and don't deserve to be treated that way. We will NEVER order from this place again.

After trying their food I pretty much refuse to eat Chinese food anywhere else!! Everything I have had is soooooo good! From the combination egg foo young to the combination Singapore noodles! That is my favorite. Please try the combination Singapore noodles or any kind of them you prefer :) I live in Maryland and I will travel to Va in a heartbeat if I am craving Chinese!

I used to really like this place (ordered multiple times per month), but I think they recently changed ownership or have had some major overhaul. The food is worse, and the prices are much higher. I used to get the sesame chicken combo platter for 8.99 or so (came with rice and an egg roll). Now, they do not offer the combo so I was charged 10.99 for the chicken alone, then had to pay extra for rice and the egg roll--so my meal was about $15 or $16 pre-tip. But, I really like this place, so I ordered it anyway, even though the prices went up--food arrived very late (took over an hour, they said 40 mins), and it was ALL sauce--barely any chicken--it was absolutely swimming. I had some friends over when I ordered on Tues and promised them good food (I am very picky with Chinese, and really loved this place), but one of them has now been sick for 48 hours. Very embarrassing when I swore up and down about the quality of this food. All in all, very disappointing change in recent weeks. Used to be my go-to, but I will never order this again.

Not so good...tried this place to see if it was better than other Chinese restaurants on the east end. Over the top with garlic and no flavor. Delivery person got lost...had no map and took an extra 20 minutes to deliver soggy overcooked food. Will begin to drive to China Delight on the west end.

Reliably good Chinese take out. Large menu. They deliver, or you can pick up or eat-in. There are only a few tables there if you want to eat in. The staff is friendly and attentive. Consistently good quality food. Large portions.

Super customer service! And they don't mind making all of my healthy substitutions. I will eat here again.

This is pretty bad. I'm not even eating the rest of my meal. Lo Mein flavor is totally off, almost tangy. There were very few veggies included in the vegetable Lo Mein. Spare ribs are ok. General Tso's is almost inedible. Dry chicken, gross sauce, mushy coating. I will not order from here again. Delivery was quick! That's a plus.

This was the worst take out Chinese food we have ever had! We took one bite of the salt and pepper chicken and one bite of the moo shu beef and threw it all away. Total waste of $25! Now we have to order from the hotel restaurant. Totally disappointing.

Consistently good. I've placed many take out orders. My faves - Singapore noodles and basil fried rice. Their daily specials sound really good but they aren't posted online and I never remember to call for them. I order online, schedule the pickup, and get it. Online orders - Don't bother entering your credit card info. They won't charge the order ahead of time. When you arrive, they ask for your card anyway. No need to have printouts of your credit card number laying around the shop. When you order online, you get freebies depending upon how much you order. However you must add them to your cart. Parking - Try the side street before or after their block. You'll be find. I usually park on the corner near Domino's right next door.

Good little Chinese place that's clean and near our house. I've had the orange chicken, which I know is American Chinese food, but it was flavorful. I'll ask them not to deep-fry it next time, because the sauce was good and I don't need all the crunch. Their steamed pork buns are AMAZING -- four to an order, and good for a little lunch. Their egg drop soup isn't overly salty, which I know some people will translate into "flavorless," but it just means you didn't get MSG. The crab wontons were pretty good too, and they actually have crab in them. Takeout is quick, and they are very polite if you dine in.

Never actually been there. Hell, I don't even know where it is. This matters not, for they deliver! Without a doubt, the best "Chinese" food I have ever had. The fact they deliver just puts icing on the spring rolls. As a guy who likes to eat, alot... I have had my share of Chinese food all over this great 'Merica. This place has the cleanest, best tasting food to date. Here are just some of the dishes I have had that were really good. Won ton Soup Egg Drop Soup Steamed Won tons Fried Won tons Shrimp Toast Moo-goo Giapan Seshuan Chicken / Beef Pepper Beef Egg Foo Young Combination Lo Mien All of these are solid choices that I recommend. They give extras at certain dollar thresholds ( $15 + free Egg roll, $30+ something else, etc). It is not the cheapest place but the food is great. The other huge plus here is the people on the phone, speak some semblance of engerish. Don't have to spend 10 minutes trying to bridge Mandarin and bad English. Delivery is sometimes slow, but I assume they do a ton of business so that's just the nature of the beast. Cheers Nick

This was my favorite Chinese place in town, until today. I found a cooked dead fly in my General Tso's chicken. Once my stomach settled, I called the restaurant to ask for a refund -- I couldn't imagine eating more and was told I could "maybe" call Eat 24 for a refund on the chicken (but I'd still pay for the rest of my order). They asked if someone could stop by to see the fly - I assume they thought I was lying. Someone promptly came, I showed him my bowl of rice with 3 pieces of chicken and the fly, we commiserated over how gross it was, then he left. I got a call and was told I would not be getting a refund because I ate the chicken. I corrected them that no, I showed my bowl which I had made from the platters, and I ate exactly one piece of chicken before finding the fly. She kept repeating that no, I was not getting a refund because I ate the chicken. Now, I'll admit that I got loud on the phone... I apologized later in person, but I was very upset. Was BLOWN away that I was effectively being accused of lying, and that they were so unhelpful at making up for a bug being in my entrée. So, I went to the store, was ignored at the counter for too long, but I brought the 95% full platter of General Tso's chicken (I had thrown my bowl with the fly away, but they asked why I didn't bring it as well...? Good thing I had a picture). And only after the picture was passed around the kitchen staff, was I told I would get refunded (only) for the chicken. NEVER DID ANYONE APOLOGIZE?!?? Ever!!! In this whole ordeal of phone and in-person communications?! I realized after I left that in fact, mine was the only apology given about raising my voice on the phone. So rude. So ridiculous. So disgusting. They've lost my, my roommates, and my friends' business.

We called this restaurant at least two times a month for take out, but have had to take them out of our rotation. Twice we have waited over an hour for delivery with no explanation and no apology. When we called, we were assured that the food was on the way, just a few minutes, which turned out to not be true. On another two occasions, we received the wrong food. It took a long time to get the replacement, and they demanded the wrong dishes be returned. The first time, I had to retrieve it from the trash. The last time, they complained that we "ate" it because some was dished out before we realized the mistake. We were very loyal customers and only complained twice out of dozens of orders. The way we were treated seemed trifling and rude. We will not call again.

My favorite local Chinese place. My order is always correct and they've always been speedy, although I live nearby so I've always picked up and never gotten delivery. Their food and ingredients seem fresher and lighter than other Chinese restaurants that fry the bejesus out of their food. I have always been particularly impressed by the quality and quantity of veggies. Staff has always been super friendly too!

I don't yelp very often, so when I do I have to be impressed. My husband and I just moved to Alexandria and we were desperately seeking a Chinese take out place that could hold a candle to Tsim Yung in NE DC. To their credit Shanghai Peking delivers VERY quickly, the TVP chicken with cashew nuts was decently spicy (sorry guys you did a great job but I love Schiuan peppercorns and ghost chilis) they did great to balance spice and garlic, nutty, veggie flavor. They also did a GREAT job on the chicken (not tvp) and eggplant with garlic sauce had again decent amount of spice, and chicken to eggplant ratio actually surprised me (in a good way!) The rice was excellent, it had texture which is surprising as a lot of take out places over cooked the rice or you can taste it was cooked a day ago and reheated. Finally the veggie spring roll is properly good. Not greasy. The cabbage and carrots still had a nice crunch in the crispy spring roll shell, which can often be soggy upon delivery. Kudos Shanghai Peking! i was surprised in the best way possible and will be a repeat customer!

This is really close to where I live, so I really wanted to like it, but we've been disappointed every time we've gotten food from here (three times now, though it seems to be run by really nice folks). Curry chicken was terribly bland and chicken did not taste fresh. Was so bad I threw out 90% of dish, and I hate wasting food. Another time, I tried the Cashew chicken, and it was greasy and bland. My boyfriend has ordered some beef thing smothered in green onions that was equally disappointing. We won't be going back.

I prefer Thai over Chinese everyday, but some dishes you just can't get at the Thai restaurant. Shrimp Hunan, General Tso chicken, Triple Delight, to name a few. So I referred to Yelp's reviews in search of good Chinese. I figured 48 reviews and 4 out 5 stars has got to be a winner. Well to each his own. I won't say the food taste bad, just bland. If bland is your preference this is the place for you. Will say it's not as greasy and Chinese can be.

I will not be ordering from Shanghai Peking again. I ordered dinner from them last week for the first time. The food was more than decent for chinese delivery. Tonight I ordered from them at about 6:30. I was hungry and didn't feel like cooking. Thirty minutes later, at 7:00, they called me to tell me I was too far for them to deliver. I told the woman they had delivered to my house last week. She just responded that they were too busy to deliver to me tonight. Keep in mind I live within the three mile radius they claim they deliver to on their web site.

Finally! A good Chinese takeout place in Old Town. Everything I've had from this place has been fresh tasting and delicious. The steamed vegetable dumplings, crab rangoons, and General Tso's chicken are my go-to menu items. They are extremely quick with their deliveries. I got my food in 18 minutes the most recent time I ordered.

This place is the best. Great prices, great food, fast/friendly service whether you eat in or take out. There are maybe 6 tables inside and a few more outside, but it's more of a take-out place. Either way, this is just a good go-to neighborhood Chinese place. I don't live in Alexandria anymore but I sometimes make the drive to get this food.

We were hungry. We were tired. I was pissed (hubs doesn't understand that I know EVERYthing, and continues to dispute me....). Being new to the area, we decided that Chinese food was likely a safe bet. It was decent food, delivered quickly on a Friday night. I got a shrimp w/ lobster sauce. It was pretty standard, yet tasty. I would get it again, but wouldn't necessarily tell out-of-towners they HAD to try it.... The pork fried rice was good, with little chunks of chewy pork in the mix. Hubs had General Tso's chicken. He liked it, and rated it as "medium spicy," although he is Indian, and likes his food hot. He loved his egg roll, but I found mine a bit too much- like the previous reviewer. All in all, I think we will be trying more of Shanghai Peking's food when we are too lazy to go out or, god forbid, cook for ourselves.

Ordered from this place on Chinese new year, the delivery time was pretty quick for a big order. I had the pork fried rice along with the shanghai spring rolls. Both items were fantastic!! I think I've found my new Chinese carry out in old town. My co worker got the boneless pork lunch special and that thing looked good!! Would definitely order again!!

This has got to be some of the best Chinese food I have ever eaten. I am new to the area and was looking for good Chinese food and was not having luck. Luckily, this place got on my radar and we got delivery on the 4th of July. They were very friendly on the phone and the only problem was they forgot the egg rolls. Normally I would say forget it but that was the only thing one of our guests ordered so I had to ask them to come back with the egg rolls which they did very graciously. I had the crispy pepper shrimp and it was awesome - no sauce, but tons of flavor in the light breading and the salt and pepper and the bits of hot peppers. The fried rice was perfect and the vegetables were still crispy. The egg rolls were great and the crab rangoon was better than any other I have tried. This will definitely be our go to Chinese food from now on.

Not that great. Very Americanized and lacking in flavor. Not the worst I've ever had, which is why I gave 2 stars instead of 1. Anyone that says that this is the best Chinese food they've had is probably lying! Delivery service was good, though.

Good price for what you get and very friendly service. Ordered ginger tofu, basil eggplant and veggie fried rice no egg. (Was eating with a vegan friend if you're wondering about the lack of meat choices) It was all very enjoyable and I totally loved the ginger tofu. Would visit again when in town.

We love this place. Yes, standard-nothing-special Chinese take out. But consistently delicious and the staff are friendly. Hot and Sour soup is great, General Tso Chicken and Hunan Chicken are just what I want. Overall, great value for money.

    (4)
  • Juan L.

I had the General Tso's Chicken, and it was excellent, more crispy, tender, and spicy than I have had at other restaurants. I dined in, the service was good, and while the seating area was small, it was relatively uncrowded when I ate there. I will definitely be eating there again.

  • Alexandra P.

Actually probably more like 4.5 stars, given that it's only take-out Chinese and not anything fancy. Presuming that's what you want though, I've never been disappointed with their food (unlike a lot of other places I've tried). All the standard options and a few more uncommon ones, and the prices aren't too bad (to me it's expensive having moved here from Western NY, but they seem to be in line with everywhere else around). I've only ever had their delivery, so I know nothing about the restaurant itself, but the food is always yummy and super fresh (they never EVER overcook their broccoli - I didn't know such a place existed), I've never had a problem with an order, the delivery is free if you spend $12 (which is about the most I can ever spend, given that it's usually just me eating) and they are SO FAST. My apartment is about a 5-10 min drive from their restaurant and the LONGEST they've ever taken was about 25 min (and that was quite a large order as well) - today he was at my door 14 minutes from the time I submitted the order on Foodler. Either the guy drives 70 mph the whole way or they are the fastest cooks on the planet - possibly both. Every dish I've tried there has been great, and their spicy dishes are actually spicy, although I wouldn't say VERY spicy - but I'm a sucker for hot chilis so I'm probably the wrong person to ask. The only one item which I feel could be better, though I get it every time anyway, is their Crab Rangoon - the ratio of crab to cream cheese is a bit low (though the heavy dose of chives in the filling is a nice touch) and so is the ratio of crispy fried wonton to the filling itself. That is my personal preference though, I love deep fried crispy things, I could see that other people might prefer more filling.

I work near this place so when I'm at work - I'm always tempted to try something new. I've had the chicken corn soup which was one of the best I've had. They actually put chicken and fresh corn in the soup most places just mince it up and use canned corn. It's a bit bland but I'd prefer bland over salty any day and you can quick fix it with a little soy sauce or salt. The chicken and shrimp basil rice was delicious! I would have opted for more spicy but I love spicy food. The spring rolls are awesome! Full of veggies and not oil dripping. I plan to try the Mongolian beef soon :)

  • J S.

Although I think Shanghai Peking primarily is a delivery place, I'm only eaten at the restaurant. The dining room is small but surprisingly pleasant, and all the items we've tried have been well made and tasty. The prices may be just a little bit high, due to its location in an updated condominium building, but that's a minor quibble.

This place earned a solid four stars based on my first experience today. I was coming home early from work with a bad cold, and I thought some take-out hot and sour soup might go down pretty well. I also ordered some "basil fried rice," thinking that my son, who was home for the day, could share the meal. Street parking was no problem, with spaces just around the corner on Oronoco Street. The restaurant is clean and nice, though there are only a few tables. Both items I ordered turned out to be excellent. But be advised, both came QUITE SPICY -- without me specifying that I like it hot. Luckily, I do. Indeed, both my son and I do like it spicy, so we really enjoyed the meal. But, if you are not so inclined, I would advise that you specify "mild," at least if you order one of the dishes starred on the menu as hot. This may become my "go to" Chinese place.

I gave Shanghai Peking four stars because, in my opinion, it is everything a decent Chinese take-out place should be. 1. It is located on my way home from work 2. The service is quick and friendly 3. The restaurant and the kitchen appear clean and well-kept 4. The food is decent 5. The prices are reasonable If you're looking for a good neighborhood Chinese take-out, this place is probably a good bet. There are a few other Chinese take-out places nearby, but most of them seem kind of dirty and sometimes the food can be a tad on the unidentifiable side. I ordered the Kung Pao chicken and an egg drop soup. It was pretty much what I expected, but definitely on the spicy side, and I'm a spicy food person. It was hot, a good sized portion (lunch the next day, yay!), and the veggies seemed nice and fresh. My BF had the hot-and-sour soup and the orange beef. I thought they were pretty good as well, although they went a little heavy on the orange. I used to order from Ginger Beef, but I think this might be my new stand-by Chinese place.

  • Evan M.

Definitely nothing to write home about... Kind of pricey for mediocre Chinese. Service for dine in was just okay. They were friendly but not very attentive even though the restaurant was empty.

  • Ben W.

Food is very tasty relative to the competition in the area. Ginger Beef is a lame choice and it's a block from my house. Recommend the Pork Fried Rice. It's our first time here, but we expect many happy deriveries in the future. Give it a try. NO MSG and you can get brown rice. Yay!

Eh. I guess this is your average Chinese takeout. The lady on the phone agreed to deliver to me even though I was technically slightly over their 3 mile mark, so that was nice. And I will say the food quality seems slightly higher than average. But overall, the taste is just ok. I had the chicken lo mein, which was average and needed lots of soy sauce to make it tasty. The general tso's was ok, and tasted more like bbq chicken than general tso's, although I will say the cuts of meat were good (I requested white meat). One part of my order was wrong- I ordered the spring roll and specifically asked on the phone if there was shrimp in it. She said no, but lo and behold, there was shrimp. That could be a big issue for someone who's allergic to shellfish (I'm not, I just hate shrimp!). So, all in all, average Chinese takeout if you're in the neighborhood, but otherwise... I doubt I'll be ordering from here again.

We found this restaurant about a year ago and have stopped in about once a week ever since. It's hard to find a good quality Chinese restaurant that puts a lot of thought into vegetarian entrees. This restaurant's TVP options are always delicious (our favorites are the Kung Pao TVP, Chicken with garlic sauce TVP, and the eggplant with garlic sauce). Also, don't forget to try the steamed vegetable dumplings--delicious. As an added bonus, the owners and employees are always very friendly. Highly recommended -- you won't be sorry.

This is the best American-style Chinese restaurant in Old Town. I've ordered nearly once a week for the past few months and have always been satisfied with the quality, portions, and speed of delivery. The prices are also very reasonable - especially the lunch specials. My favorites include the General Tso's and Mongolian Beef. I also like that they're not afraid to add a little more heat / spicyness to their dishes than your average Chinese take-out restaurant.

I ordered delivery last week and the food was amazing. I was able to order online, and when the delivery had taken longer than expected i called. The person handling my call was amazingly helpful, calling the driver and knew exactly who I was based on the the time i was expecting my delivery. I will definitly be ordering again.

Shanghai Peking has opened right under the Monarch Condos on Henry. The inside is bright and cheery, the staff happy to see you. I ordered the Duck rolls, the spring rolls, chicken fired rice, Moo-Shu Beef and the Szechuwan Chicken. As a huge fan and critic of Egg, spring and duck rolls, I was pretty happy about the light flaky savory bites. Love them, eat them, want some more of them. The Szechuwan Chicken (I know about the spelling, I'm sorry) was exactly what I expected and wanted: hearty and above all, spicy. I mean that, Spicy. Not a little bit of heat, I mean both barrels. The Chicken fried rice was a clean taste of all elements, unlike others in the area where you can't really tell by looking or tasting if it's chicken, pork or other. The Moo-shu beef was smoky tasting with a solid crunch, with the pancakes being actually authentic, rather than tortillas pulling on a slight disguise. Delivery, pick up and eat in, they've got it all. Plus the classic rice boxes that scream Chinese takeout that you can't put in the microwave because they have little metal handles. I know I should hate them, but knowing they're still used gives me a feeling of solidarity. So far, out of the FIVE chinese food places that I've tried in Old Town, this rates the best.

  • Cory L.

I had some of the best General Gaos / Tsaos (depends on where I go) I've had in a long long time. It was finally spicy, unlike many other chinese places warn but never deliver on. The chicken pieces were huge and full of chicken instead of fried driedness. You can order online, and they actually complete the order as requested. Can increase or decrease spice level. Also, the woman who answered the phone when I confirmed the order spoke full sentences of english of which I could completely understand. I will definitely eat here again soon.

I tried Shanghai based on Yelp reviews. I had the crispy beef and my SO has the General Tso. It was fantastic! So good, that we ordered again a few days later. I ordered the beef egg foo yong. Big mistake the sauce was more like a heavy gravy and the flavor was just okay. SP is a little pricer than our usual place for just okay was not worth it for the price. SO had the Dragon and Phoenix and loved it.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly.
