Fat City Kitchen Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

It's actually just called City Kitchen in a Home Depot shopping centre on Pickett St. Very much incognito, this place is a trendy, industrial atmosphere/decor restaurant and bar. First impression....New York city restaurant in the Meat District. Tell tale sign of a great place, the bathrooms. Clean, trendy, and nicely appointed. Our party of 6 sat at tables in the bar where we were greeted by Taylor. Very friendly and he enjoyed my ribbing. Craft beers were abound and a decent wine list too. It's owned by the same folks that own Shooter McGees and TJ Stones (both of which I enjoy). We all had varying food that included : steak n cheese sandwich with garlic mashed potatoes; City Angus burger with shoestring French fries ; fried artichokes ; Mac N cheese ; bacon brussel sprouts; and a steak salad. All comments were GREAT AND I WANT TO COME BACK. In perusing th3 brunch menu, I for sure want to try that with bacon bloody Mary's and maple bourbon waffles for under $9. Highly recommend in an area that is lacking modern eateries/bars with a feel of urban life.

Very simple industrial decor. Feels cramped. No place to wait. Bar area very small, not a place to hang out except to wait on a table. Service was outstanding, everyone super friendly. When the newness and excitement wears off they need to refocus on the food. Prices were ok.

The food was mediocre. Beware of the waiter that charges a 20% gratitude when you want to split the check.

I went to Fat City for the first time today. I really liked the ambience and the brunch. The service was exceptional, Jordan was very attentive and professional. I will return to try other menu items.

My husband and I had lunch here today. Overall, it was a good experience, but not excellent. We were seated right next to the open kitchen, which was actually cool for a first time visit because we could see the food coming out, but I would not want to sit there if I were familiar with the restaurant as there's a lot of commotion. We were seated promptly, and within a reasonable period of time, our drink order was taken. After that, we had time to read the entire, menu, including the extensive beer menu while our waiter took care of other tables. He swung by at least 3 times to say he would "be over in a minute." We ordered the Margherita pizza and the City Burger with salt and pepper fries. The pizza was awesome - I'm a Jersey girl by birth, so I'm pretty picky when it comes to pizza. The thin crust was light and crispy, the sauce was delicious and there was the perfect amount of fresh basil scattered on top. The burger was good, but not outstanding. The bourbon glaze was a really nice touch, and the crispy onions were delicious. Complaints: I ordered it medium and it came out more like medium well to well - the burger was too big for the bun which made it really hard to eat with your hands. The tomato slice was from the end of the tomato which had the green core in it. This is a pet peeve of mine. How hard is it to cut out the inedible core? The fries were homemade, but because they were shoestrings, they were pretty greasy and I didn't taste the salt and pepper seasoning. I'd prefer thicker homemade fries, or maybe they just need to be fried in hotter oil. After dinner, we asked for the leftover pizza to be boxed. The waiter took it away and asked the kitchen for a pizza box, which they put out for him promptly. In the meantime, he walked away and I noticed him chatting with another table for about 10 minutes before he returned to ask if we wanted anything else. I pointed to the pizza on the counter and he made a lame joke about me "keeping an eye on it." He had obviously forgotten. I'm not sure whether he intentionally sacrificed our service to take care of people he thought were going to tip him better or whether he's really just that bad at his craft. I was a waitress for twenty years, so I know that it was either one or the other. Overall, we will be back. There were several items on the menu that I'd love to try. I'm hoping we get someone else to wait on us and maybe the service will be more up to par. The kitchen seemed to be working smoothly, which is a huge bonus and I found the pricing very reasonable. I also loved the industrial decor. Hopefully next time I can upgrade the review and add a star or two.

Couldn't be happier about the new City Kitchen! Walked in and was pleased to see Will from Shooters. We live in Cameron Station and this is walkable. The wine and beer list is extensive and the food options were well versed. I ordered the Po Boy which was delicious and my sweetie got a pizza. Service was prompt... So happy to know City Kitchen can be the new hang out for residents in the Station... This is a much better place than the Indian curry house- our only option for four months. Our tab for a bottle of wine, appetizers, and two entrees was $58 whereas at Curry House at tab like that would have been around $75.

What could be a really promising, fun spot, in an area that needs something new, just fell flat. Great ambiance, fun bar area and beer/wine list, smelled great, packed house on a Friday night... it has everything going for it! But both the food and the service were pretty unremarkable. Our meals actually had zero taste (just burgers and steak) and all were luke-warm. Our server was more concerned with being funny and ironic than bothering with our orders (even water) in an appropriate amount of time. Could have been too busy of a night, and I'm willing to try it again, but perhaps in a few months, once things have settled down and management has finessed a few kitchen and service issues.

Great food and service. We loved our server John Norris and the mushroom pizza was incredible. Loved the restaurant interior with its rustic charm and local decoration flavor. We sampled local beers and really enjoyed our Saturday afternoon - certain to be our neighborhood favorite. Can't wait to come back for dinner.

This is my kind of place! I have been a few times and sat at the bar with friends. I love the pizza and bronx knots. My friends have had a little bit of everything on the menu for appetizers/dinner (wings, burgers, crab cakes, Memphis chicken, and Philly Cheesesteak) and were more than pleased. Bartenders Matt and Will are so warm, welcoming and friendly and are awesome bartenders. I didn't want to leave! I can't wait to go back again and try more of the menu and also have Matt and Will create an inventive cocktail for me like they did last time. Great wine and 80 or so beer options! Super cool decor too! I also love that music is faint in the background rather than loud so I can actually hear my friends talk over cocktails! Can't wait to try their brunch as well. Cheers!

Was here last week, Sunday. It's always hard finding a place interesting enough that my husband and I want to eat there as well as having quality food while still having simple items my mother in law would like. She's not an adventurous eater and 6 years of breakfasts at Dennys, IHOP, Bob Evans and cracker barrel as our only options is a bummer. I was excited to see the menu. It had go to breakfast classics, eggs, bacon, potatoes while also having a great selection of other choices husband and I. While there I decided to try a cup of their new England clam chowder (they call it Boston) and it was good. I haven't had any I've liked in awhile and this was pretty good. It was a bit thinner than I'm used to and in the cup (typical size) there were a few bites where the clans had grit but the flavor was spot on and it had a toooon of clams. For breakfast I decoded to try the Italian sausage gravy with biscuits. Very good. Homefries perfectly cooked. Over medium eggs perfect as well. Now the picky stuff. .. Coffee cups unfortunately very small and slightly bitter. Waitstaff overall fantastic until just chatting at the end as wrap up of the meal, then no refills. I know taking a table to just hang at for awhile bugs waitstaff but there wasn't anyone waiting for a table and he had other open tables in his section. And it was like 15 minutes. Some of the tables are right next to the kitchen with the open end at the kitchen so sitting in one of those maker it not as much of a relaxing dining experience as usual because of the constant hustle and bustle. Overall though I really enjoyed it. The quality was great, the decor was fun and the menu interesting. Definitely going back.

We went there Sunday evening after learning about the 1/2 price pizza night. I have to say that we were both very impressed with the restaurant and the staff and the food. The atmosphere is somewhat noisy due to the open layout, but not uncomfortably so. We ordered our pizzas, and because we were seated near the pick up window from the kitchen, we were given extra attention from the staff and also the management. We ordered the Bacon Chicken Ranch pizza and it was absolutely delicious. 11" was the perfect size because the crust was not very thick. It made a great meal for each of us since we ordered a pizza each. I highly recommend this place. It is associated with Shooter McGee's and will become another place for us to visit on a regular basis.

Finally got a chance to try this place tonight but was terribly disappointed. Perhaps it was because we just stopped in for a light dinner and therefore didn't try any of their main entrees... We got the DC sliders, boathouse salad, and the artichoke dip. None of the food had the appropriate temperature or texture really. Sliders weren't hot enough and lacked flavor. The artichoke dip was warm at best. They say on the menu the dip is for those who love artichokes but actually the only taste that came through was cream cheese. Pieces of artichoke were tiny, I dislike when restaurants skimp on quality and portions like that. The spinach in the salad was almost warm and slightly wilted so much so that I ended up asking for croutons so I had enough crunch to choke the salad down. There just wasn't enough craisins, pecans, or blue cheese to make the salad any good. Additionally the service was friendly but it wasn't busy and our waitress was remarkably absent, making us wait a few minutes to get water refills and to request those much needed croutons. Maybe their main entrees or brunch are better but probably we won't take the risk and go back

If you want to impress someone with fancy appearances and hoity-toity decor then go someplace else. If you want to impress them or yourself with an outstanding meal then ^this^ is your place. Fat City is located on the left side of a seedy strip mall. It is also handicapped by looking closed from the outside and NOT having the word "Fat" in the easy-to-overlook sign they have. I would never have considered this place were it not for the Yelp reviews *and* being extremely hungry at the time. When I walked inside it was like stepping into a different place entirely. The restaurant was spotless. The staff was friendly to a fault. The noise level was nonexistent. They have a decent selection of beers and wine. The menu covers a range from burgers to seafood to steaks. Or, so I would guess. I didn't open the menu and instead selected seabass with blue cheese and a watermelon glaze from among the half dozen appetizing specials offered on a separate sheet. Rach of those specials included a suggested wine and beer pairing (I assume the intent is to pick one or the other). The meal was delicious.

***3.5 stars**** I had the MAC 'N CHEESE, BRUSSELL SPROUTS, and HALF CHICKEN. I thought the mac was delicious; the chicken was decent, but definitely over-cooked. The brussell were terrible. WAY too salty. Overall, 3 STARS for dinner. The servers were friendly and helpful in choosing items off the menu. If I were back in the area, I'd probably go back to try the scallops. Service: 4 STARS

Service 5 stars, food 3 stars. Had wonderful service at brunch. The Brooklyn biscuits & gravy were good and came with a hefty portion of sides. However, I prefer Midwest style. The people around us seemed to really like the Belgian waffles, so I will try that next time or come back for dinner. Menu does need to be tweaked. For example, don't tout that you serve authentic dishes from around the country and then make po'boys on a bun instead of french bread. The restaurant had a good atmosphere, nice decor, and was clean. I will come back.

TL;DR: A good addition of a breakfast place in the area, but the weekend brunch is just okay. City Kitchen (note: does not say "Fat"in the front, just keep an eye on the circular logo) is part of the Fat City Restaurant Group, which also runs Ramparts Tavern, TJ Stone's, and Shooter McGee's in the Alexandria area, so you can expect a familiar feeling. The restaurant has a bar and also a dining area similar to other restaurants in this restaurant group. The interior is nicely decorated and they have booths as well as tables. There's even a working fireplace at the back! Really can't beat that. We came here for brunch right around opening (and the only meal this review covers - will have to come back for a beer and dinner) and the place packed up pretty quickly. Our server was a little slow at first, but everything picked up after we got the orders. The food came out at a reasonable time. I got the Eggs Benedict (my go-to dish to determine the quality of the place), the wife got the Belgian Waffle, and our friend got the Crabs Benedict. Because of dietary restrictions, she asked the egg to be done well instead of poached and the kitchen did exactly as asked, which is definitely a plus. the Eggs Benedict, though, is ham versus Canadian Bacon, which is a different take. The hollandaise sauce was a little on the saltier side and also a little runny. Nothing too special. Belgian Waffle was bland. The coffee is free refills, and it's not bad, so you can spring for it for sure. If you're looking to come here with a kid in your party, this place is kid friendly, at least for the brunch portion. Our friend has a toddler and they were able to accommodate to her needs. We also saw many families that had young children and babies as well, so, this is a good place for family brunch.

Surprisingly great. Odd location but the brunch was fantastic. We had the crab cake eggs bennie, crab cake sliders, Memphis bourbon chicken and the lobster roll special. All was very good and reasonably priced. The best with the chicken. The flavor was excellent. Service was very accommodating to food allergies but lacked in some areas, like making sure our drinks were full. Bacon Bloody Mary was delicious and very reasonably priced. Will return.

Ummm. Not sure what happened since the last time I've been here but the food quality has declined. The previous time I tried the chicken sandwich that everyone was raving about. The fries were not cooked properly and the sandwich itself was just dry and bland. I mean it was pretty awful that I nearly sent it back. So last week I tried the city kitchen burger which was quite delightful the first time around. Well, this time the fries were excellent but however the burger was underwhelming. The brioche bread they used seemed cheap. It was hard and crumbling apart when trying to pick it up. On top of that the burger was dry and needed more condiments. I was thinking to myself is this the same burger? Highly disappointed and I believe some other yelpers complained about the brioche bun as well. Also service was spotty. Not sure if I'll return.

Only lived in Alexandria for a short time, but in that time, I brought my mom, my boyfriend, and my roommate to this place. I tried their dinner menu and their brunch. Both were equally impressive. A lot of variety and absolutely everything I tried was really good. The people I brought were impressed also, especially as the place looks dingy from the outside. The service has also always been consistently good. Never a problem!

Reeeally tasty dine-in brunch, and the Blueberry Muffin French toast is absolutely amazing. Such a neat little spot in an unexpected strip mall. I'm knocking off a star because we ordered brunch to-go this past weekend, and the "home fries" tasted like boiled potatoes with absolutely no seasoning. I know quality of food can differ when you order things to-go, but we'll definitely be back to try some more items!

Just down the street from me! I come to this shopping center often due to the Post Office being here but it's not that nice of a shopping center. It needs lots of updates. I saw Fat City Kitchen a few times but never gave it much thought since the area looks a little dead and run down. Went here on the 4th of July for a late lunch and it was amazing. We started off with the fried shrimp and jalapeno's over grits and wow. it was delicious and the flavor was amazing. I tried one jalapeno but it was too much for me, still worth it though! I got the mini crab cakes for my entree and i have never had such big lumps in my crab cakes. my hats off to them! The service: our waiter was amazing, He was very friendly, making conversations and very prompt with everything. all in all, i loved our dining experience here and am coming back shortly. especially to try this brunch!

Five stars again! I have been several times since my first review, and have always lucked out with Eddie as my server and a wonderful meal. This review is for the baby shower I hosted there today. 14 of us were very well taken care of (by who else but Eddie??) with awesome meals, accommodating staff, and a bartender willing to create a specialized "mocktail" in honor of the mom-to-be. Our food all came out at once, everyone was happy with their meals, and the staff let us linger and enjoy the time together. The guests were highly complimentary of the venue, it was perfect for our party. Everyone commented about how happy they were to have learned about the restaurant, and planned to return. Thank you for making our little event so successful!

Negatives: 1)The location is in an outdated strip mall... But don't let that fool you! Positives: 1) Amazing food (I have not had 1 single bad dish, and I've tried a lot of them) 2) The Staff is great, all around. 3) The entire inside is great, excellent feel once you're inside! 4) They had a big problem with the chairs at the bar and bar dining area, after a couple weeks of receiving complaints they ordered brand new chairs that were extremely comfortable for the guest's... This goes to show that management and the owner care about the customer.

I was excited to finally check out Fat City Kitchen (part of the 'Fat City Restaurant Group,' whose siblings include Ramparts, TJ Stone's, and Shooter McGee's (all in Alexandria)). It was shocking to see how spacious the restaurant was, with a bar to the left, and a dining area straight ahead. The decor was all industrial-like, with steel dividers, concrete floors, and leather booths. The menu include items like City Wings, Jackson City Sliders, Pensacola Cocktail, salads, stone oven pizzas, desserts, and an extensive beer and wine list. They also serve a Saturday/Sunday brunch. The hubs and I had the following: City Wings (which come in 4 choice of sauces (New York Buffalo, China Town Sweet-Hot Sriracha, San Antonio Hot Dry Rub, or Honey Barbecue); I opted for the China Town - these come with 10 wings which are roasted with spices, fried, and then tossed in the sauce; they were more on the sweeter side with no heat, and the side of bleu cheese was unnecessary); a bowl of Boston Clam Chowda' (this was actually pretty good, as it was the right amount of thick and heartiness, veggies, and bits of clam - not at all salty, but if you add a bit of ground pepper, it gives it a nice little kick; this was pretty good that we ordered another bowl!); a 'City' Pie (sliced mozzarella, pancetta, caramelized onion, and tomato sauce - I requested it a little bit more crispy; this was okay, but I think I would have preferred 'The Mixing Bowl' with its sausage and pepperoni!); Philadelphia Cheesesteak (shaved house-roasted beef ribeye, cheese blend, all stuffed in an Amoroso roll; I did appreciate the chopped ribeye, but not sure if the roll and the cheese blend was complementary; I did add mayo to it, but that only helped slightly); L.A. Po'Boy (contained golden-fried shrimp, carrot & purple cabbage slaw, sliced cucumbers, all on a hoagie roll, and a cilantro-lime aioli on the side; this also came with a sweet sauce (maybe for the shrimp? The roll was dry, and the battered shrimp were just okay, but this dish was our least favorite); The Beef Burger (8 oz, seasoned with house steak rub, grilled, and comes with lettuce, tomato, and shaved sweet onions; the hubs also added mayo and steak sauce to it; this was pretty good); Carolina slaw (wasn't a fan of this, as it was watery and vinegary); San Antonio Hot Fries (covered with Old Bay; these were actually quite salty (even for me!)); and, the Jack-Mac & Cheese (the cheese was way too grainy, and I felt as if it wasn't worth the $2 upcharge). Our server was Reese, who was attentive and nice, also making sure that our orders were all correct. There seemed to be a lot of locals coming in, to watch some sports on TV and/or having meals with their family. Located inside the Trade Center off of Pickett, there's plenty of parking in the shared plaza lot. +Boston Clam Chowda' +Beef Burger +industrial-esque decor +located on the west side of the Trade Center

Came here for brunch. Service was a little slow but I think that was a symptom of the fact that a bartender was my server. The sweetest bartender though with perfect tooth, so I wasn't mad! I think his name was John! Anyway, they don't have bottomless mimosas, which hurts my heart, but their crafted beverages are really good. I got the Liquid Breakfast (pink grapefruit juice, champagne, served on ice, with sugar on the rim). It was delicious. SOO good! They didn't serve it on ice, thank goodness. Maybe they just meant cold. I ordered the Weirs Beach Breakfast Sandwich. I thought it was really good. My only complaint was that the chipotle mayo was kinda concentrated to just one part of the sandwich so I didn't get it with every bite, but the easy fix is just to ask for some on the side. My brunchmate noticed the fact that the "brioche" bun looked a loooooot like a regular hamburger bun (which it did) but I thought it was tasty anyway. My other brunchmate for the Blueberry Muffin French Toast. It was really good but it was so sweet that it's hard to finish it all. Sugar-overload. But again, tasty. And a good choice if you've got a sweet tooth. BUT i'll tell you what won me over. John was telling us about their happy hour specials (which sound great), but also told us about their liquor infusions. Yes, they do in-house liquor infusions. He let me sample the Apple Pie Bourbon and Maple [something I don't remember] Bourbon and BOTH were great. You can obviously buy this stuff at the liquor store but I love that they do it themselves and that you can order a cocktail w/ an infused liquor instead of just regular. Anyway, the place is awesome. Our server, John, was awesome. The Apple Pie bourbon was awesome! Go.

I really love Fat City Kitchen. It is a great addition to the Alexandria City neighborhood. They have a great salmon/ crab cake dish. I always get them to take the skin off the salmon. Good chicken wings, salads, and fries. I like it so much that my boyfriend brought me here for Valentines day because he knows I HATE the really stuffy places that have the pre fixe menus only on that day. I also like staying close to home for date night. The Chef is super friendly, and they will try to accommodate you as much as possible. They have a nice little bar area, without it feeling like you are going to the "bar" to get food. 4 Stars!

Great new place in a part of town that is starvvvving for good restaurants! I got the chicken sandwich (I think it was called Coronado chicken?) with fries and both items were amazing - especially the fries. My fiance got the muffaletta and he loved it! We split the fried artichokes which were also very tasty but a bit pricey, 10$ for 4 of them. Drink specials are nothing to write home about and they don't have happy hour for food just yet. The bar is also kinda crammed. BUT I'm still giving 5 stars because overall - the service, food, and atmosphere were fantastic! Seriously, a breath of fresh air to have a hip, modern, and affordable place in West Alexandria. We will be back!

I've heard some good things about City Kitchen and wanted to check it out. I didn't really know what to expect ambience wise. I know this plaze well, so I had an idea it would be more casual so I arrived right after a work out a bit under-dressed. It's a semi casual spot but certainly a lot nicer than I had been expecting. The room looks nice, has a semi open kitchen, a small bar area and a a handful of booths. Other tables are smaller 2 person seatings that can be convered to 4,6, or 8. We were lucky enough to grab a table on a Friday evening when it seemed as though there was a pretty big crowd growing. We were promtply seated and given an opportunity to view the menu. It seemed as though there might have been some kinks being worked out staffing wise. We had a waittress, a manager, and a host all serving us at one point or another. As a customer, I have no problem with that many people serving me, especially when they're all doing a fantastic job, but I'm sure on their end it could have probably been a little smoother. The adult beverage menu seemed extensive enough to satisfy any snob's palate. The food menu itself had an array of offerings. The salads (not my thing) seemed to be pretty decent. The appetizers on the menu seemed pretty neat, BUT when I saw a City Burger come out for another table I knew I had to try it. I went with the City Burger, which was a burger that came with some sweet demiglaze on it, on a brioche packed (and I mean packed) with onion straws. You ge ta choice of vegetable, salt n pepper fries, or San Antonio HOT fries. My instinct told me to go with the hot fries. Of course when my instinct tells me to do something, I don't go with it. There are two "premium" sides, "Jack's Mac N Cheese" and "White Truffle Fries". Well I gambled my two dollar upcharge, and went with the White Truffle Fries (Mainly because I had been watching Anthony Bordain and he had been eating something with Truffle in it.) White the shoestring cut fries were good, they were not quite worth the $2 upcharge. The burger itself was one of the best burgers I've had in a long time. My expectations, were met, and exceeded. It was a good mix of meat while also being complimented with a nice crusty bun. The gouda cheese was topped with onion straws and that sweet glaze on it. I loved it. My wife got the bolganese past and loved it. She couldnt stop raving about the sauce. There seemed to be endless combinations of food, all seeminly "inspired by cities around the world". It seems like a place that you could return to a number of times and gt to exerience different flavors each time. I will be returning.

Ate here during restaurant week. The food was definitely solid and the wait staff was friendly and knowledgeable. I like when you ask a waitress (Annie in this case) what she would order and she gets excited when telling you about the offerings and has interesting notes about the food away from what you can read on the menu description. The barbecued steak tips were done perfectly and the salmon, despite being on restaurant week special, was NOT overcooked! Dessert was directly on point and as it had elements of bourbon, chocolate and less prominently, bacon. I would go back, it is a bit out of the way, but the food and service speak for themselves.

The food is good. The people are nice. The service is always attentive. This place is one of the only nicer, foodie-type restaurants directly near my apartment complex (otherwise, I'd have to go to Old Town to find anything in a similar "category"). My boyfriend and I go here often, for both brunch and dinner. Brunch is amazing. My favorite item hands-down is the blueberry waffles (look for it in the add-ons section of the menu). The blueberry parrty is a compote that comes on the side that is divine. My boyfriend really liked their half smoke - he said it's the best he's ever had. He had it eggs benedict-style, which I think was a special that day. Everything we've had for dinner has been awesome as well. They had an appetizer special a couple of weeks ago where they served bone marrow, bread, butter, a chimichurri-type sauce, and foie gras. The bone marrow was so delicious and rich and soft. We really enjoyed it and I loved that the staff was even excited about us trying it. Another time, they had wolf fish as a special and it was also really good. My boyfriend often gets their wings with sauce on the side. I definitely recommend this place. The menu itself is great but you never know what delicious specials they will have! My only (very small) grievance is that it didn't open for brunch till 11 and we always seem to want to get brunch earlier than that. But, besides that, keep rocking on Fat City!

Good, good brunch. Everyone at my table really enjoyed all of their choices. The only complaint i heard was from the Breakfast sandwhich which i tried and it was just ok, nothing great. I had the blueberry muffin french toast and it was amazing. The serving sizes were perfect. The coffee was OK not great, also they give you cold milk to put in it which i hate. The service was quick and friendly. All in all a good experience.

The food was good, we were here probably only a week or two after it first opened. The staff was really nice. The food did take a while to come out, but that's no problem considering they are really new. Also had some things on the menu that had recently changed recipes (I guess they are still experimenting a bit) - so I'll be ready to come back once things are set in place and we can come check out the permanent staples here! Will update review after....

We tried this last night for the first time, as we're constantly looking for new places in the neighborhood. It's in a Home Depot shopping center, so we weren't expecting the nice ambience once we entered. For the DC area, the prices were very reasonable, although we couldn't justify ordering off the "fork and knife" menu on a Tuesday evening. Service was prompt, personal, and helpful, and we're looking forward to trying brunch. Also, we appreciated that the restaurant seated the women with their toddlers who came straight from their Gymboree Class away from the rest of us. I don't mind children, but they were the only ones in the place.

City Kitchen is the newest endeavor of the Fat City Restaurant Group, which also own's Shooter McGee's on Duke Street. I was anxiously awaiting City Kitchen's opening, since it's a convenient location and I was looking for another local joint to add to my rotation. City Kitchen is tucked into the Trade Center Plaza on South Pickett St., between the old post office location and Gymboree (on the side opposite Home Depot). I stopped by just before 6pm on a Thursday night and the place was empty, probably due to a combination of factors: 1. It's brand new; 2. No street-facing signage (Pepi's Pizza Box is still on the Trade Center Plaza sign along S. Pickett; and 3. If you Google "City Kitchen," the link is the second to last one on the page (and the URL is actually FATcitykitchen.com ). I trust these issues will work themselves out in time. The joint was pretty empty and I was pleasantly greeted by server Kyle, one of my faves from Shooter McGee's. The dining room was open, with high ceilings and rustic decor, complemented by a fireplace along the back wall. There was a separate bar area off to one side, with several hi-top tables in addition to bar seating. There is an impressive selection of beer and wine. There was no cocktail list that I saw, but they have a full bar, so I imagine they'd make whatever you ordered. I ordered my standard unsweetened iced tea to drink and the LA Po' Boy and the mac n' cheese as my side dish ($2 upgrade charge). The Po' Boy was pretty tasty. Lightly battered, generously-sized shrimp filled a long hoagie roll, garnished with a spicy cabbage slaw and cucumber pickle chips. Kind of like a cross between a classic Southern Po' Boy and Bahn Mi. It took me about four minutes to inhale it's deliciousness. The shrimp were super fresh -- not pre-battered and frozen. I wished it was garnished with some fresh cilantro for an extra Vietnamese-inspired zing, but I have no real complaints. I'd order it again in a heartbeat. The mac and cheese was good, but not as good as Shooter's mac & cheese. The Bechamel cheese sauce was tasty, but lacked the gooeyness that differentiates "good" mac and cheese from "awesome" mac and cheese. I think a generous heap of shredded fontina on the top, put under the broiler for a couple minutes, would definitely bump this dish up to expert level mac and cheese. I was stuffed but wanted to try their dessert, for a complete review. Sadly, there's no dessert menu just yet. Oh well. My bill came to $17 before tip, which in this economy is reasonable. Entrees are pricier -- in the upper teens and mid-$20s -- but fair. I look forward to watching this restaurant evolve and am excited to try their weekend brunch. I am also hoping that the owners will find a way to put in some outdoor seating under the front overhang for use in warmer months.

Went there for dinner and was bit dissapointed. Pizza was half off on sundays so we tried the margarita... Sauce was good but the crust looked and tasted like something you would pick up premade in the bagel aisle. Moved on to entree and we all split 2 steak and cheese sandwhiches. One was supp to have onions and peppers the other just peppers and both with hot fries. When our sandwhiches came out there were 3 plates with half sandwhiches and 4th plate had a 1/3 portion. That was fixed fast there had been some confusion and it got cut in 3rds vs half or something but idk where the other 3rds went if that was the case. All the sandwhiches had onions and none had peppers and we got salt n pepper fries vs hot fries... So overall service was good, sandwhich was ok but completely wrong , pizza was not , and prices kinda high. So would we go again? Prob not

Beautiful decor and atmosphere, very nice server, good menu variety, and lots of parking. The fruit cocktail mimosa was delicious and my brunch (simple egg breakfast) was good. The sausage was very good but I'm giving 4 stars because the scrambled eggs were a little too well done and the potatoes were a little mushy and heavy-handed on the seasoning (but, to be fair, the potato seasoning had good potential and a bit of a kick). I will definitely go back and try City Kitchen again -- I think they will get even better with time and more business. Kudos to the owners --- it's awesome to have a cool new place to visit in this neighborhood. I've lived in this area for a long time and felt like there was a chronic shortage of places in the Annandale / Alex West area to have a nice, regular brunch or "American" style meal. Of course like so many other "hidden gem" restaurants in NoVa, you need to get past the fact that you're in a nondescript shopping center. Don't worry! You'll be pleasantly surprised once you get in the door.

Came here on Easter sunday during their special brunch, just looking for some lunch. My boyfriend was super hungover so didn't order a meal, but I ordered the Chattanooga chicken sandwich and oh-my-goodness. It was honestly, the best chicken sandwich i have ever had. It was tender, delicious, perfect. I don't know if I'll try anything else on teh menu...I did also order a side of the jack mac-n-cheese. This was a "Premium" side which was $5,...and not worth it :( I had high hopes, since mac-n-cheese is one of my favorite sides, this was not flavorful at all. I ended up having to add salt AND pepper. If the Mac had more flavor, this would have been a perfect meal with 5-stars. We also ordered the raspberry pop-tarts and the waitress offered some whipped cream on the side and it was delicious! I would highly recommend this! My boyfriend also ordered the bloody mary and it was pretty perfect as well, it had bacon bits and was not too spicy, but definitely had a kick which had me sipping water :) Atmosphere was great, menu was broad, and will definitely be back (but won't be ordering the mac)!

Ran into this gem last night when my boyfriend and I were starving and looking for the nearest place to eat around his apartment- so glad we went in! We split the Ohio Valley Dip which was delicious. The pita was the perfect amount of toasted and the spinach dip was a better than any spinach dip I've ever had. They had a huge selection of drinks which was great, because who doesn't love an IPA with their dinner. I had the Chattanooga Chicken Sandwich with the Jac Mac n' cheese. Both were delicious ( I could eat that mac n' cheese everyday for the rest of my life) the ambiance was really nice, with a modern, rustic feel to it and our waitress was super sweet and helpful. We will definitely be back!

OK Its official..im DONE with this place! The food is good...BUT the managers and the prices are RIDIC! Don't offer me truffle fries with my burger then UPCHARGE my bill $2! They've done this twice with sides they've offered to accompany my meal... I promise there wont be a third! They should change their name to Sneaky Kitchen! As a group of walked the manager who was organizing the magazines in the front area didn't hold the door, smile or say anything...Great customer service..NOT!

we came here for a quick lunch i got a shrimp po boy with 'hot fries'. the po boy was aight. the 'hot fries' confused me for a few reasons: 1) they were cold 2) they were not spicy 3) they were not aesthetically pleasing ;) my friend got a chicken wrap and a soup. she was also not that impressed service-great, no issues price- good for the amount of food you get parking-plentiful in the lot ambiance- dark, cozy, its nice overall, one of the better options in the shopping plaza

I really, really like this place. Great ambiance and menu. Very cool decor. I've been there 3 times so far and will keep going back. The burgers are fantastic, as well as the beer selection. Huge beer list! Hoping the cons I have will work themselves out in time. They are -- twice the servers seemed really unsure of themselves, and slow. The fries need help. They're just meh. The price points a tad bit high to me, so I find myself sticking to the apps, salads and burgers. Entrees well into the 20$ range. While that's not super high, if this place is to become my after work and weekly hangout spot, the prices are going to slow me down...

Wow!! What a great place! Went there last week with my best friend. Got a table immediately and Edward suggested some real good choices. I settled for the scallops and bestie got a steak. DELISH!! About half way through a couple was sat next to us. We could tell right away they were trouble. Their dinners weren't right, the drinks weren't right, etc. he sent his dinner back TWICE! Ugh! What a sap! Edward handled it like a pro! The manager came over and he finally settled on well who cares?? We had the BEST chocolate molten cake and key lime parfait!! Go! Go! Go!

Not impressed. The description of the food on the menu does not match the taste and combination expectation. I ordered the steak salad, and the chinks were seasoned with not comparable seasoning. It was just weird. The pizza tastes like frozen pizza. Even more odd, the chef walked to our table with this huge chunk of raw meat (scared the kids, by the way), while presenting it as his most cherished possession. It was so huge that it was not appealing at all. Just weird. He also did not even think that maybe there were vegetarians at the table.

Awesome! We've been coming here for the past several months and have always had really good service and enjoyed the menu. They have several items that are great, different, and just delish! Hubby swears by the roast duck. I love the burgers, and the fried artichoke appetizer - and there are just not enough great adjectives to describe their amazing mussels. Wow! The atmosphere is nice - lovely neighborhood resto/pub. Bartenders are all great- I can't have a favorite because they're all so good. Try it!

This is my favorite place to go! I have never tasted anything bad. Highly recommend the bourbon glazed chicken and the Mac for dinner. Bacon Bloody and the blueberry French toast are two of the best things ever! DONT Skip out on the grits. All that is to die for.

Went to City Kitchen for a casual anniversary dinner on February 10, 2015. As some have noted, the decor is a bit confusing, but not so much that it's distracting. The fireplace in the back is a nice visual. We were seated by the kitchen, so we had a great view of the dishes coming out as they were going to the tables. We had mussels in a white wine broth and two different variations of salmon dishes. The food was fresh, well prepared, and plated in a manner that made the dishes appealing. The brownie sundae dessert was good, not as good as the Valhrona brownie sundae at Clyde's, but few in the City compare to that one. What set the restaurant apart for us was the impeccable service that we got from our server, Michael. Not sure how long he has been working there, but he knows his business! His demeanor, timing, and menu recommendations for the sides were spot on! Glasses were never empty and he went out of his way to make sure we had anything we wanted. Probably the best service I've received at a restaurant in several years, and that includes many $100 a plate restaurants in DC and elsewhere that we've been to. Will definitely be going back to try other offerings on the menu and make this spot a regular on the rotation!

I really like this place!! The restaurant is tucked away in a building with Home Depot and the post office, which is closed. It's not a very nice shopping center and I was shocked about this new addition. When we pulled up, we thought it hadn't opened yet since it seems dark from the outside. But walking in, I was pleasantly surprised with the interior. It's clean and has a nice look and feel. The bar is immediately to the left, and that's where we always head to. The drinks are delicious, they have a great variety of beers on tap, and I really like their truffle fries. The guys behind the bar counter are AWESOME! They're nice folks and tell great stories. The food is good, but are a tad bit overpriced. We came in with a coupon once, and we tried their duck and salmon. Both were well crafted meals, but (totally personal preference) I learned I don't like gamey meats...it's kind of funky. My Asian palate was expecting something like Peking duck, and I was so wrong!

I am conflicted about this restaurant. West Alexandria really needs restaurants like this, and the old Home Depot strip mall needs successful tenants. I love Fat City Kitchen's sister restaurant Shooter McGee's, but I find City Kitchen to be a disappointment. High prices, small portions, bland food, very noisy (they need some sound absorbers). You can get a much better meal for less at Shooter McGee's. On a positive note, the décor is great and service is friendly.

Food was ok, burger under cooked and my wife's salmon was the same. They just opened 3 months ago and they still getting their act together. I will revisit in 5-7 months.

Had a great pizza last sunday night. Not sure how regular the special is, but when we were there pizzas were 50% off. We ordered three pies and all were great. Only problem was that salad and pizza showed up at same time so timing was a bit off. Will be coming back to try out rest of menu.

I am so happy to see this space -- formerly Pepi's Pizza Box, which I was never tempted to so much as step a toe into -- transformed into City Kitchen. Husband and I visit Shooter McGee's on the regular, so to have another Fat City endeavor within walking distance of home is excitement beyond compare. What can I say? We're tame folks. If you frequent Shooter's, you'll recognize many of the wait and bar staff who have either moved over to City Kitchen to stay, or are helping out with the restaurant's launch in these first months. We were happy to find Taylor, with his warm and welcoming charm, manning the bar on our most recent visit. Speaking of the bar: it may be a small space, but it's perfect for kicking back with a craft beer. The draught selection alone is impressive, with rotating taps from Bell's, Dogfish Head, Port City, DC Brau, and Goose Island, just to name a few; the bottle list delightfully boggles. And they even have a mixologist on staff to whip up unique cocktails. Want to watch your preferred sporting event along with your brew? Flat screens line the walls and entertain without intruding. If you'd rather catch up with friends, the industrial-themed dining room is a tastefully understated place to enjoy a leisurely meal. City Kitchen's food is solid at both brunch and lunch/dinner. Crisp, golden brown crab cakes with chunks of meat so large they could be meals in themselves. Tender fried baby artichokes. Chilled tiger shrimp just asking for a heaping scoop of horseradish-fiery cocktail sauce. Fluffy biscuits smothered in a full-flavored sausage gravy. Airy Belgian waffles served with a delicious bourbon-vanilla maple syrup. Salmon grilled to a moist mid-rare, juicy burgers cooked to your specification and swathed in a bourbon glaze, or a shrimp boy riffing on banh mi with pickled slaw. The only true miss we've encountered was the San Jose Chicken Wrap: its comically diminutive size would be the biggest disappointment about it if not for the blandness of the salad itself. When we sent it back to the kitchen, however, the service we received as a result ensured we'd be patrons for good: the server apologized and whisked it away offering to replace it with anything; the manager came over and offered a gratis bowl of soup to the hungry diner while we waited on the wrap's replacement; and the chef himself came out with the new sandwich to apologize in person. One suggestion, which we made to our server the last time we were in: more vegetarian menu options. They are limited to a couple salads and a couple pizzas, and as a former veg-head, I know a hearty vegetarian sandwich and at least one main would be very much welcomed. City Kitchen is a truly great neighborhood bar and grill with good food and a relaxing atmosphere. But if they know one thing here above all else, it's customer service. In my book, that trumps just about anything.

One of my favorite dishes in the world is Chicken and Waffles. Chef Mark hands down makes the best I have EVER eaten. The chipotle grilled corn on the cob is a must try as well! This place should be on one of Washingtonians best and I have no doubt it will.

A nice addition to the West End. Would never think to look for a restaurant in the less traveled end of a Home Depot shopping center(thanks, Yelp!), but I'm glad we found it. Food: solid -- not a lot of innovation, but very good execution. I had the seared scallops with lemon risotto and spinach. Scallops were great -- 5-6 were plenty, the sear was good and they tasted very fresh. Risotto had a good "bite" -- it wasn't especially creamy (more like mashed potatoes) but not overcooked as many restaurants do. My son had the artichoke dip to start and then a duck breast with a blueberry balsamic reduction. I guess the duck was good, because by the time I asked for a bite, it was gone! Service: wonderful! I don't recall our waiter's name (not sure he provided it, which is frankly ok...) but he was terrific. Conversational w/o feeling like he was ready to join us, attentive from afar and there when we needed anything. We'll be back.

We tried our neighborhood restaurant on Friday night (1/9). As approached the hostess around 6:30 PM, she asked if we had reservations. I was surprised. We said, "No, I didn't think of it." She responded, "That's okay. We'll figure it out." The restaurant was larger than expected. There is a nice bar area with several flat screen TVs. We took a guess about the seating -- 100 people. The ambience is rustic. The service was good (I would have rated great but, as we finished our dessert, our waiter was not attentive.) He was very attentive up until dessert. I ordered the wings with sriracha sauce. Delicious. The wings were crispy. The taste was bold and spicy. Yummy. I would order it again. Nine wings for $10. Hubby ordered steak for his entree. He said it was good. I ordered the LA Po Boy. A good sandwich. I think there were five shrimps in the sandwich. Good crunch from the cucumbers. Good flavors. We would go back and try other items on the menu. They have brunch on the weekends (11 AM to 3 PM). We may try their brunch, too.

This place is simply amazing! Really cute restaurant with freindly and knowledgeable staff! We can't wait to go back and try more. They recently changed their dessert menu where everything is made in the restaurant except the awesome ice cream that is made at a local creamery! They have a really good selection of beers and wines too! Don't let the location fool you these guys know what they are doing!!!

We attended for restaurant week, and were served napkins mixed into the mashed potatoes. We were horrified because it meant the potatoes are recycled off of used plates. Management tried to float a story and a free meal, but it is obvious what they are doing. Yuck. Sickening.

Sorry guys this is the first and last time we'll come here. Here's why. .. - we had a reservation and still waited an hour for a table. Then we were placed by the door on a -10 degree day. Burr -so we sat at the bar to wait & didn't tell us there was an upcharge on the $5 bloody Mary's for anything besides absolute -when we finally got a table we waited for about 15 mins before anyone came over THEN once we ordered we waited another 20 mins for breakfast food -the biscuits & gravey had barely and gravey -the "brichoce" bun was a potato hamburger bun Overall not worth the wait. :(

I was really excited to try this place because of the awesome reviews, but I was disappointed by the end of my visit. My family and I were in the area and decided to come here for lunch. The reviews looked great. The decor was nice with a warm, beautiful fireplace towards the back of the restaurant. The menu had burgers, pizza, and a lot of great looking duck options. My sister decided on the wild mushroom pizza, I chose the beef burger, substituting the Jack-Mac (a pepper jack mac and cheese) for an extra $2, and my parents got the business plate special of the day, a alfredo penne pasta with duck. When the food came out, I noticed that my burger didn't have ketchup or mustard come out with it. I waited for our waiter to return to ask us how everything looked (someone else had brought us our food), but he never returned. I asked another waiter if I could get some ketchup and mustard. After he walked back and forth from our table without bringing anything back, and our waiter was nowhere to be found, I just went up to the bar to get some myself. The waiter at the bar kindly brought some to the table. Our waiter showed up afterwards with ketchup and mustard, so I guess it was communicated to him that I needed it, and he was just a little bit slow. I noticed my parents kind of fiddling with their food and just pushing it around. My parents are not ones to cause any kind of fuss or to complain. Just by glancing at the pasta, it did not look appetizing. My sister and I both tried their pasta, and it was disgusting. It was so bland, I wouldn't have been able to tell if it was alfredo if the menu hadn't stated it. When the waiter came back around, I brought it up to him that their dish was not particularly appetizing and very bland with no seasoning. Our waiter basically just said "Oh no, I haven't tried it yet, but I'm sorry to hear that" and started telling us about what the specials were yesterday. He made no offer to us about bringing us something else. He just told us that he would let the chef know and "maybe" the chef would come out and talk to us. The chef never came to talk to us, but it was busy and the waiter probably did not get a chance to talk to them. Now, I don't know if he ever told the manager, so this might not be their fault at all. But the waiter clearly wasn't trained properly. Bringing it up really didn't do anything. We weren't looking for free food or anything, but that dish should have been taken off the menu. And maybe that was my fault for not being more forceful and stating that I wanted to talk to the manager. But at this point, we just wanted to get out of there. The burger was terribly bland as well. I had asked for it to be cooked medium, it came out medium rare.I was too hungry to ask for another burger, and it did not bother me that much. I did have to douse my burger with ketchup and burger for any sort of taste though. The jack-mac that the waiter highly praised when I ordered it? Average. I couldn't even tell it was pepper jack, and it had a slightly gritty texture to it. Bleh. My sister's wild mushroom pizza was the only good thing. It was delicious and looked fantastic. But that doesn't make up for the rest of the food. My favorite was when the waiter told us we would just have to come back next time to try something else. Gee, thanks, but no thanks.

Unassuming, sort of awkward location, was what kept my wife and I from visiting. Finally, I convinced her with the help of yelp to check it out. On entering you'll discover it is way out of sorts from what the area and exterior lead you to believe. You might think you're in some snazzy Georgetown joint. Clean and comfy. We started with the lemon garlic mussels, my honest review, great flavor, but I am personally not a fan of the larger mussels, I prefer the small one so I can enjoy the flavor without the texture of the larger organelles. My wife had the duck, oddly the star of this plate was the Brussels sprouts with bacon. The mashed potatoes were unremarkable. The duck cooked to order and met the mark. I ordered the crab sliders, they were amaaaaaazing! Must try! I had them with the 'hot fries' which are spiced perfectly to give that heat without the burn. If you like spice bit want to be able to taste the rest of your food these fries are spot on. A date worthy location, friendly service, priced right.

Love love love Fat City Kitchen! Great beers on tap always- great burger, great fries, scallops are so so good! Service is always a pleasure and we've never had to wait for a table! Have been a dozen times and have never been disappointed! Great small local place!

This was my first time eating here. I went for brunch with a friend. I'm not the biggest fan of the location, it doesn't seem like there would be much foot traffic, however once inside you'll forget where you actually are. The ambiance is wonderful and very welcoming. It took our server quite some time to greet us and take our drink order, but other than that the service was nice. I tried the "liquid breakfast"drink, which is grapefruit juice with champagne. It's rather tasty and not heavy on the champagne. I ordered the vanilla waffle and got a side of eggs...I love waffles so I was rather pleased. I would love to go back here to try out some of the other items on their menu.

While I've found some stand out meals for my tastes, for me for the most part the menu has turned out to be hit or miss. Hits for me are the sausage gravy breakfast for brunch and the dry rub wings. Aside from those and one or two others, I can find better versions of most menu items elsewhere locally. I'll keep going as I like to support my local restaurants but if you keep expectations in check you'll be satisfied enough.

Terrific! I just left here, after wandering in from dropping off some mail at the post office. While, I do think the storefront could be a bit more lively and noticeable, the service is second to none! I was warmly welcomed in by who I believe was a manager and the bartender. Very local, laid-back atmosphere,people-wise, though I do feel the decor could be warmer. Kelly, the bartender, THE BEST! I ordered a sidecar - she went out of her was to learn it and make it deliciously and stroooooong! She even gave us a complimentary shot! I love this woman, she's kind, gracious, got personality - can't wait to return. Jack Mac - pretty good. Crabcake appetizer - big chunks of crab. There is is a slight ammonia taste, which may mean it needs to be fresher. The drink prices are amazing. I can't wait to check it out in the evening, will definitely be back!

I loved this place! Boyfriend and I went for brunch last Saturday. We got there around 11, which is when they open. This is key, since the place definitely fills up as the day goes on. Food: I ordered the crisfield crab benny, which was amazing. The crabcake on it was phenomenal. The old bay hollandaise was tasty. All in all, a solid benedict. I've been looking for a crab benedict in the area. My favorite used to be the one at Evening Star in Del Ray, but last time I visited it wasn't as good - the one here is even better. Boyfriend ordered the Brooklyn biscuits and gravy. Delicious. The gravy wasn't too salty and the use of Italian sausage was an interesting and well-executed take on a classic. The biscuits were good, too. We also shared the blueberry muffin french toast. It was really, really good. The portion of french toast wasn't huge, but it was perfect for sharing. If you like blueberry muffins, this is definitely for you. Skip the syrup -- it's plenty sweet on its own. Definitely worth a try! We didn't realize it, but every item we ordered came with a side of homefries along with a choice of bacon or sausage. We were stuffed by the end of the meal and had a ton of leftovers. Pricing was fine, most items were under $10. The benedict was $13 because, you know, crab. Dranks: We both had their bacon bloody. We asked for it spicy. It was a really terrific, balanced bloody mary. Kind of smoky and filled with edible garnishes (bacon for days!). It was almost a meal on its own. The drink was also $5, so you really can't beat that. I also had their drink special, the orange crush. The waiter told me the bartender spent a bunch of time juicing oranges the day before in prep for this drink. You could tell. There was love in that glass. Also, it was definitely one of those "Surprise! Now you are tipsy!" drinks, since it was super smooth and a little sweet. Thanks, ninja booze! Their coffee is also good. Service: Our waiter was great. He was really attentive and checked up on us regularly. We also got a visit from the manager, the bartender, and the head chef (I'm assuming he is also the owner, but I didn't ask). Everyone was extremely nice and actually cared if we were enjoying our meal. I should also mention that they visited /every/ table. That's dedication, folks. Thumbs up for their runners and bussers, too, who were also extremely attentive and helpful. Other notes: The place is hip as hell, you guys (in a good way...maybe the best way?) - but not pretentious, which I appreciated. It's kind of a hidden gem in a fairly busy strip mall in Alexandria. The signage and the exterior is pretty unassuming, but when you walk in, you would swear you were in Arlington or DC. It has kind of an industrial feel to it, but it's super clean and nicely lit. The music was awesome (it was older rock at the time, I don't know if they change up the playlist for different times of day). Talking to Chef Mark was pretty cool too, he revealed the theme of the menu is based on his travels and each item shares flavors from a particular city. That idea definitely comes across and works. Unrelated note - this place is in the same shopping center as Mediterranean Bakery & Café. We stopped by there afterwards and did some grocery shopping. A day where you can visit the perfect restaurant and hit a great grocery story is pretty much the best day. All in all, great visit to a great restaurant. We'll definitely be back.

We came for a friends 40th Bday and it was a great experience. Ambiance, Food, Beer, Wine are all an A+! The flash fried artichoke appetizer was amazing. We had the pan seared scallops and tried the jack Mac, Brussel sprouts, risotto, truffle fries and Caesar salad on the side. Everyone at the table said they will return. It was great food, and super close to Cameron Station, where we live. We are super excited to watch them blossom and grow.

Great addition for a kind-of-creepy shopping center. I like seeing places like this pop up. We have a really hard time deciding what to order because everything looked so good. The food was great (sriracha wings and caesar salad) although the Brox knots (like garlic knots) need about 100x more garlic and some olive oily sauce. If I can't dip my knots, I'm not very happy. Our waiter Peter was great. We will be back again soon!

Went there on Sunday for brunch last minute and it was delicious. Loved how the menu was spread out just enough to make me want to try all the flavors of everything. Shrimp po boy and Brussel sprouts were perfect. Decor was really cozy and not your typical alexandria look. Will definitely be there more often.

From the outside we didn't expect much, once we went inside it is a beautiful sports bar restaurant. It is very small overall and the layout is jammed but they definitely put some time in to the decor. We went for dinner and had an outstanding time. Our server was on point with suggestions on drinks, dinner and desert. The speed of our food arriving was amazing ( 3 courses in less than an hour). But a little more time on some of the appetizers would have been better. The bread knots were under cooked and under seasoned and the mussels still had a lit of sand in them ( more than i would have expected by at least double). Our main course was the duck and the salmon. My duck (suggested by the server) was interesting and tasty but the Brussels sprouts were lacking some flavor and the mashed potatoes were room temperature at best and needed gravy or more thought put in to them. My wife had the salmon and it was very good. The crab tomato bisque was the highlight of the meal. Our desert (suggested by our server) was the brownie sundae was a delight. We did have some issues with being charged for a soda that didn't taste right and they couldn't fix the problem (syrup ran out) while we were there. Good food. Nice little bar with several TV's. Pretty good service. Great selection of beers on drafts and bottles. Pretty decent wine list. Would definitely come back. Putting a patio outdoors in summer.

This restaurant has great food and good atmosphere. Problem is my server doesn't mind providing bad service once in a blue moon. Mike our server really pissed me off when I went in for brunch. He had 4 tables but decided to ignore me and my guest for 15 minutes. He made frequent passes to other guests next to us within that time frame. Not sure what his beef was but when asked if brunch was still available he gave me a very cold no. I just said let's go if this is the level of service I get. I really like the place, but when you personally prepare coffee for guests sitting right next to the people you ignore those actions send a clear message. He visited other patrons 4 times without looking our way. I paid for the soda I ordered and left. I am usually calm but became angry at this neglectful behavior. Not saying don't go, but there needs to be more accountability .

I got the spicy shrimp po boy and man it was reallyy good, the only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars is because the fires were so salty that I couldn't really eat them

I wanted to love the place more, love the decor, but the food was not memorable. I would come back for drinks and apps. Try the artichokes!

My husband and I went here for the first time last night. The Yelp reviews swayed our decision to go. The high rating is spot on! Food, service and ambience are all great! Their menu has a nice variety and a huge beer/wine list. The only reason I didn't give it a five is the location is in an older strip mall and it could use some sprucing up. Not sure it's possible but outdoor seating would be nice for this time of year too.

We went on a Saturday night, and it was very busy. We had to wait for a table, but the service was friendly and they (the bartender and the waiter) apologized for making us wait. I had the roasted duck and it was delicious! It came with the sprouts which are delicious also. My boyfriend had the Mac and cheese with crab cakes. He said the Mac and cheese was only sufficient but the cakes were good. We split a blondie for dessert that was great. We would eat here again since it's so close to us!

We love this place! We live nearby so we go probably once a week. The ambience and decor is nicer than you'd expect from the outside. The bartender, Will, is awesome and makes some innovative cocktails with infused alcohols. Ask him to make you the Jalepeño "Margarita" with the jalepeño infused vodka. They also have a good beer list with craft and local brews. We always start off with the San Antonio Hot Fries as our appetizer. They have daily specials that have always been great for us. The pizzas and mini crab cake sliders are awesome. One time we ordered the apple galette for dessert, which was really good but not warm, which was disappointing. I do think some of the prices are a little high for what it is, but then again I'm still getting used to the higher restaurant prices in this area. It doesn't stop us from going often! :)

I write this five days after the visit in an attempt to use better humor to make something better of a disappointing experience. I may have failed. You be the judge. Really, really wanted to like this place. Tried hard to like this place, but too many little mistakes (inexcusable for these experienced restaurateurs) were just too much to overcome. 1. It looks closed from outside. The door is unlighted. I drove past it. 2. I couldn't discern what decor they were presenting, maybe a medieval industrial warehouse effect? No, more like dingy oil change salon. The harsh lighting over the bar made nice folks look terrible. Bare flood lights 20 feet above the dining area gave everyone a pale look. The hard surfaces made hearing the server somewhat of a challenge. They figured it out at TJ Stones, so they know how to do it. Maybe they blew the whole decorating budget on the fake fireplace. But, hey, wings, pizza and beer? Let's do this! 3. I love beer. But 70+ canned and bottled beers listed on a single page in 2 columns, in a tiny font? Just because someone has a laptop and Word does not a menu designer make. And then, what I ordered off this tortuous list, the server sheepishly reported they didn't have! 4. Companion orders a bottle of IPA. Server brings cold bottle and glass, pours cold beer into WARM glass, probably just liberated from the dishwasher. Aggravated but not yet despairing, companion consumes the once-cold beer quickly before it exceeds room temperature. Server inexperience is made more obvious when it appears the training was cursory. 5. Lentil soup was excellent, one bright spot; still, once again confirming the principle that broken clocks are right twice each day. 6. Wings, ordered plain with sauce on the side, arrived sauced. Manager scurries over to offer a free beverage. We waited another 10 minutes for wings done right. They were large and crispy, to their credit, and included carrots AND celery (wing veterans will understand). The bleu cheese, unfortunately, fell short. For wings, dressing should be thick, not runny. Oh, well. While waiting for the right wings, looking across the room, some of those waiting for a table forlornly behind the hostess stand and scan the dining area, because the vestibule is too small for the crowd. 7. Pizza! After 2 beers, looks pretty good. Oh. Soggy crust. Nice sauce and cheese, but forgettable. Can't blame the pizza. It would have taken something far better to salvage this dining excursion. Sadly, this particular neighborhood is short of good establishments. I pity those waiting for tables. This place isn't worth standing in line.

We had lunch there this week and found the food to be unimpressive. My burger was over cooked, dry, and lacked flavor. Doubtful I'll return.

Great burgers and atmosphere. So far no strollers & screamers. There is a wide variety of meal selections and the menu is very detailed. It is in the same corporate group as Ramparts and Shooter McGees (both awesome). I was happy to see the chef come out and mingle. The beer selection is great and I like the concept of "draft of the month!"

Had a couple of beers and chicken wings. Nice little bar with a lot of tvs. Nice decor. Hope they can stay afloat not sure if they'll get enough traffic because of location. Needf a better sign outside as I just learned they opened dec 1. Will ge back to try a full dinner.

Okay. Went for both brunch and dinner. Service: Cannot complain here, both times the waiters were prompt and professional Food: The brunch was solid, nothing amazing, but good food. The dinner was mediocre. My wife's food was a bit bland, though my burger was pretty good. Drinks: Great beer selection. Price: This place must have mistaken west end for Old Town. They charge quite a lot for a beer there, quite a bit more than the area average or what the beers should be running them. If this was on King St. I could see why, but it's not, it's on Pickett st. in an old plaza near a bowling alley and some townhouses. The food wasn't too overprice, but it was on the high side. This likely falls in line with the "thinks it's old town" part. Overall: not bad, not great, but a bit pricey.

I enjoyed the Caesar salad with salmon. Very generous portion of salmon cooked perfectly. The clam chowder was awesome. My husband was underwhelmed with the Philly cheesesteak. The portion of meat was very small. Much more bread than filling and the fries were undercooked. They weren't busy and our food took longer than it should have. We'll try again, but aren't ready to tell our friends yet.

I've had better - but it'll do in a pinch for a nearby restaurant... Was so excited for a new neighborhood restaurant but was disappointed that it was just so-so. The hostess ignored us while we stood to be seated for almost a minute (it's not like there was anybody else standing there, or that she was busy); the waiter didn't acknowledge us right away and during dinner, didn't check if we needed anything after our food was dropped. The menu isn't exceptional, they have pizza, wings, burgers, salads and also some pricier dinner items like steak - with all the usual trendiness to make it seem a little more upscale than your neighborhood Applebees. The chicken wings were undercooked (I hate rubbery skin) and too much 'smoke' flavor added, but otherwise sauce was tasty; my salad (mixed greens) was not cold nor crisp and hard and they piled on the lettuce so it was hard to eat without it spilling over. My husband enjoyed his 3 sliders and mac-n-cheese topped with bacon (who couldn't like that?). That said, it wasn't that bad, reasonably priced and it's nice to have a new place nearby other than Shooter McGee's. (p.s., I went back on Sunday for brunch to give it try and the service was BAD...the waiter was disheveled; messed up our order, wasn't attentive and I think he may have thought if he smiled or was personable, we might have felt welcome and he certainly didn't want that). Food was ok and reasonably priced.

Did the brunch special on a Saturday with the family. All I will tell you is that it was one hell of a unique experience. The place is really a beautiful little diamond in the rough. It is not your traditional true "brunch" that you might be used to in Washington DC (Ie: bottomless mimosas, etc) HOWEVER the selection of alcoholic beverages was rather interesting. I would ask the restaurant to make it bottomless at some point... The selection of food was limited but very good. The food did take some time to come out for 4 people but in the end was very well worth the wait. The food, you can tell, was really made with care and they took the time to get it right. Helpful when your staring and plan to annihilate your plate. The bar looks interesting and the selection looks worth it. Give it a shot. It is not so cost effective to eat here because the prices are somewhat overpriced for the location, food, service, and ambiance. Give it a whirl. We will be returning for sure.

This place is amazing in so many different ways. First and foremost, the Chef is genius. His specials are always creative and tasty. The bar makes its own infused bourbon, the staff is friendly, and we can walk there from our home. We have been going there since it opened and keep coming back and so do others, the place is always packed!

Love it! The food and service are amazing. We love this restaurant group (which owns TJ Stone's in Old Town and Shooter McGee's less than a mile away). I had the Little Italy Bolognese and my husband had the Simply Grilled Salmon with wild rice and green beans. All the food is very flavorful and fresh taste. We also had the Pensacola Cocktail as an appetizer which was very good. Everything was very delicious. They have a big selection of beer and wine, my husband was able to try a small 1oz sample of the beer on tap and offered other tastings as well. The atmosphere is awesome, it's got a casual restaurant and bar feel, you can dress up or down for it. It seems more spacious and open than the other restaurants they have; especially with the nice high ceilings. There are a few booths, tables, bar area with high tables, and another area that has high top tables. The servers have tried all the food, so they have a good idea of the menu. My husband already for see's him going back with friends and co-workers for a drink or two. We'll definitely be coming back and as our waiter said we'll "split custody between Shooter's and City Kitchen." Thanks for a great night! Note: The signage is a little different, so we weren't sure if they were open at first, but they're on the opposite side of Home Depot parking lot next to the Gymboree.

Nice new addition to the area considering it was just a local pizza/diner joint prior, however, I expected more for the prices. Cool and inviting decor, however the staff is not. They are either inexperienced or just dont want to be working. They had zero enthusiasm or personality. My eggs benedict was nothing more than I could do at home by myself. There was a huge plate with an empty hole where something should have been- maybe through some springs of spinach or fruit. It just looked disappointing when it arrived. The potoates had no flavor, no spice, no onions, nothing. Just chopped pototoes with oil. Again, nothing special. Had a virgin bloody mary cause I am preggers and that stank, why dont people know how to make virgin drinks, but perhaps the alcoholic one was just as bad. Unlike the other table, the bartender chimped on my drink by not giving me any celery or olives added to the top of the glass. I basically was given extreme spicy tomato juice like I wouldnt notice. I also am irritated at all kids menus- why are they so extemely large and expensive. I mean do we need a separate toddler menu for pete's sake. They arent the only restaurant that does this, but they succummbed to the norm buy giving large portions for high prices and not including the price of a drink. So $8 for a toddler or any kid under $10 for breakfast just is getting nuts. Only Bob Evans does is right in that arena. We dont live near this location anymore, so I am not sure I will be back, it doesnt make me want to go out of my way for it. I liked Shooter McGeeze better.

Good new spot! The hush puppies were hot and came out quickly. I had the salmon with Brussels sprouts and risotto. I asked for the salmon to be well done since I'm pregnant and they cooked it perfectly; not dry at all. The Brussels sprouts were a little on the oily side but still good. My husband had the chicken sandwich with the jack mac n cheese. Both were delicious! Definitely will come back to try out some of the other tasty looking food!

We've been waiting for this spot to open for some time. Thankfully the food here is MUCH better than Shooter McGhee's. The service is fantastic - people who enjoy their jobs and have a passion for food and the restaurant. Possibly some growing pains in the future of this eatery - ie. Cheap Ikea-style bar furniture and overly bright lights in the children-filled dining room. I'm hopeful in time they will refine their identity a little. But overall this is a good spot that I'm hoping will become a long-term establishment in the neighborhood. Give it a try!

My husband and I eat here about once a week, we always sit at the bar and are considered regulars. The food is delicious, of course some dishes are better than others. We like that the menu changes from time to time, and find the specials intriguing. The pizzas are probably our favorite and in NO way taste frozen (I vehemently disagree with a previous review I read). Anyway, we have found the service excellent and the food very good - fabulous addition to the neighborhood.

Great food and great service. TOTAL THUMBS UP TO CHEF MARK! This is an upscale casual restaurant where the staff doesn't mind chatting and getting to know who is coming to try out their restaurant. They have a nice way of making it just a tad special. We have been twice in one week. Once to check it out with another couple for Alexandria's Winter Restaurant Week menu and a second time on our own for a late lunch (& to see if we still thought it was a keeper). Both times we totally enjoyed our food (and the other couple did as well on Saturday). The restaurant is not large. It has tables and booths. We are not large people but found the tables and chairs more comfortable than the booths, which we thought were a little snug.

Outstanding addition to the neighborhood! Will at the bar is as good as you can hope for and we could tell he was truly excited about being a part of the team there. Fresno chokes were delicious and the Bolognese was fantastic. Great selection of beers on tap, I went with the Brooklyn Brown and my lovely wife had the DC Brau on rotation. Solid crowd for a Tuesday, lively but not bonkers. We will definitely be adding the City Kitchen to our regular rotation.

Was apprehensive when I saw the restaurant was in a strip mall, but I need not have worried. The interior of the restaurant had a very modern, industrial feel - yet it was warm and inviting. Space was well planned out. We visited the restaurant on Mother's Day for brunch. We had a reservation, and arrived right on time. As soon as we gave our name, we were promptly seated. Our server was friendly and attentive, and had a sense of humor. We shared the mini-crab cakes and pop tart starters. The crab cakes were good, but we might be judging harshly as we are from Baltimore. Pop tart was definitely yummy! I had the Belgian waffle with strawberries, my dining partner had the bread pudding french toast. We were both very happy with our choices. Would recommend and visit again.

My wife and I stopped in on a recent Friday night and we're pleased with every aspect of our experience here. The beer selection is good and the menu is a big step up from other dining options in City Kitchen's immediate vicinity. The other spots nearby are mostly restaurant chains. You already know what you're going to get at those places, so why wouldn't you try something else? Just be sure to make a reservation.

In my last update for this restaurant, I mentioned reservations were becoming important during the dinner rush. Unfortunately, I feel like their popularity has gone to their head...so much so, they seem to want to focus on reservations even outside a rush period. Been back more than twenty times since they opened. We really like this place; the service, the food, the atmosphere...all good. But, I decided to take away a star because for our last three visits we've been hassled about not having a reservation. Keep in mind, for each of those three visits, we arrived between 4:50 and 5:10pm, well before a reasonable dinner rush, even for a weekend. In each case, there were no more than 5 tables occupied when we arrived, and the restaurant was no more than half full when we departed after our meals. Yet, in each of the three instances, we were greeted by hemming and hawing about having to squeeze us in. At our last visit, I asked why the fuss. I was told the restaurant was completely booked beginning at 6:30pm, so our 5:00pm arrival meant they would "squeeze us in as long as we promised to be gone by 6:30." Really? So that means, the staff honestly considers turning away customers 90 min before the house is scheduled to fill up...they're so flush with cash they can afford to let dozens of tables sit empty for 90 min...? Wow! I get that this place has become quite popular. And, I get that reservations are a must during the dinner rush. But, come on...4:50pm is NOT in anyone's dinner rush. And 90 min is more than enough time for a table of four to have a meal. I'd like to see the place spend less time acting popular and more time welcoming regular clients who help keep it popular, and in business. Remember, when the buzz is gone, regulars will be the ones keeping the doors open and the lights on.

Stumbled upon City Kitchen after an errand in the area. What a GEM! Had the hush puppy appetizer, the Colorado Chicken blue plate special with Jack Mac on the side, and admired the newest dessert, cheesecake topped with a crumbled blueberry muffin!?! Spent some time with Chef Mark and can't wait to go again on Saturday for brunch! I haven't been this excited for a new restaurant in years!

Two visits now one of which was with 2 small children (3 and 1). Both visits have come on midweek evenings (~8pm and ~6pm). No trouble getting seated right away either time (this place is solid enough that I'm assuming that will soon change...). Apps *Fried Artichoke - little heavy on the breading, but the dipping sauce made up for it. *Bronx Knots - decent flavor and great for keeping the kids happy while we waited for dinner Drinks *Only sampled the beer thus far - great selection of Stone, Port City, Bells, and the like Meals/Entree *Basic beef burger w/ cheese. bacon, and jalapeno was outstanding. The salt and pepper fries were a nice complement - thin and not overly fried. *City Pie was wonderful - crispy pancetta and the onions were nicely sauteed; center of pie was a little soggy, but tolerable given the thinness of the pizza. Sides *Brussel Sprouts - a little soggy (consider more of a pan fry finish in the future), but had great flavor. little bit of sweetness was a nice touch. Will definitely be back. It's great to have such nice option within a 5min walk.

I've been here a half a dozen times with the hopes that the service gets better, each time being more disappointed. On my most recent trip for lunch, we were seated, (there were 2 other tables occupied around us). We sat and sat and sat..... We watched the waitress go to both other tables and then go sit at the bar to "chat" with her friend... And we sat.... So after about 20 mins, I went up to the hostess (who I clearly disrupted from her texting) to ask if we had a waitress. She said "oh she never came over?" And walked over to the bar to get her. The waitress comes over with an attitude because I guess we interrupted her from her catching up with a friend at the bar and took our orders. Food came and she never came back to see if we needed anything. My water sat empty almost the entire meal until I was finally able to flag her down (yes, from the bar) to refill. My husband also needed a refill on his sprite, so she takes the glass, walks all over the restaurant with it, refills and being back. To me, that's just not clean. Bring a new glass! Why are you walking around so that people can breath, cough etc all around his drink! The food was decent, but each time the service gets worse. We will probably not be back at this point. Plenty of other restaurants with good food AND service to give our money to.

Came here for lunch and I can't honestly say I was uber excited for a new restaurant in my Landmark area. Well, coming to Fat City was quite a disappointment. We got there and it was quite empty which didn't worry us because we knew it was a new restaurant but once I tasted the food, I realized why it should be empty. My biggest advise is to add pinches of salt for flavor. I ordered a salad with duck which was horrible because the meat was not room temperature but was cold and under seasoned. Also, the raspberry balsamic was thick for a dressing. Then we ordered a pizza which really told me I wasn't crazy when my coworker had to add salt to a pizza that had pepperoni and other meats. I believe a little salt should be added to the dough. I would have rather suggested my coworker to go to Reynolds Bar and Grill which is up the street with flavor yet is a dive bar. Also, after sending my salad back, I watched the waitress taste the duck off my salad while it sat in the window and heard her mention it was dry. That was unacceptable! But, I will say the hush puppies and white chilli (add salt and pepper) are good and truly unique.

Absolutely fantastic brunch with my mom today. Great service and even better food. The liquid breakfast drink was delicious and my steak salad was awesome. This place came as a surprise inside of a strip mall but it's new and hopefully here to stay. We will definitely be back!

Looking for a new lunch place, we selected City Kitchen, and we were pleasantly surprised. From a varied menu we selected different soups and salads. Everything was well made, tasty and attractive. The bar menu has good wine and beer selections. Eddie took good care of us. We will return.
