Service is better... sometimes, food is better... sometimes. A restaurant is only as good as they are at their worst and I have been let down by the food, undercooked, cold... Service SLOW, pickup line to the door alone side the regular line...missing orders AND I have had amazing quality here too. Spin the wheel tonight and see what you get.

OK, no offense to any readers, but this is good Mexican food for Salt Lake City. Not excellent and certainly not authentic, it is filling with good flavor and semi reasonably priced. A few coworkers recommended the Sweet Pork Barbacoa Salad so that was my dish du jour. The flour tortilla was toasted, not fried which was nice. Choice of beans (black or pinto), romaine lettuce. guacamole, cojita cheese, shredded tortilla chips and the cilantro lime dressing blended very well (leaving off the pico) and did not disappoint. What did disappoint?? Every Mexican restaurant in my world offers a side/bag of tortilla chips. Not Cafe Rio. Also, the guacamole was diminished by mixing tomatoes and the scoop they used was slightly larger than a mellon baller. The decor is what most Americans think a Mexican food joint is supposed to look like but basically its kinda tired and sorta tacky. Concrete floors and very little acoustical tiles make the noise go from tolerable to ear drum shattering quicker than a 3 year old running into a table. Listening to Hall and Oates along with other 80s notables was a not so refreshing change from the coyote yelping music you normally hear at such a themed restaurant. Im glad I took mine to go...

Amazing salads and burritos, service could be friendlier at this location.

They are always great! I love the Chicken salad. Café Rio has good quality meat, fresh veggies, and nice workers.

I`m a frequent customer and am usually satisfied with cafe rio but lately, i pre-order my food either by phone or online and still end up waiting 10 mins or more to get my food, in a line! The managment seems nice, i just don`t know whats with the poeple preparing the food in the back. For example, today i pre ordered, came there on time to pick up my food, still had to wait and i ordered extra lettuce plus pico de galo and ended up getting NO GUCAMOLE, which should be included in the meal, i got my extras but my not favorite part of the salad.. Its just things like this that are disapointing and its not the first time.

Noisy location. I had ordered a Steak Burrito with Black beans and Hot sauce and I get home and they gave me a pork burrito with medium sauce. This happens more often than not with these people.

Rarely can a place jump from 3 to 5 Stars, but here goes... I stand corrected. It's just that I didn't care for the sweet pork. Now, I've tried the fire grilled meat and I am an addict. Someone call Intervention because I've been here two times in three days and will be back again and again before this new week is over. Why? They make the best d@mn tacos you have ever had in your life. Flour tortillas made in front of you and grilled. Then, topped with cheese and fire grilled chicken and steak. Then, put through the oven conveyor. Then, topped with huge amounts of fresh lettuce and pico. Then, I ask for a side of their Mexican dressing. oH mY fRigGiN GaWd!!!!

I live one block from this location. Today was my 4th visit. I like to think that I give places a chance. I had been 3 times previously because friends love this place. I went because my friends liked it. I was just up in Montana and had a great experience in the Missoula Cafe Rio. Was craving that same wonderful taco. After standing in line for 15 minutes, placed my order. The counter help were not paying attention and made mistakes on the 4 orders in front of me. By the time I got up to the counter I had stood in line for 45 minutes. Was treated rudely by the staff when I asked them to correct my order it wasn't right either. Went to the drink station. Egad.... no ice. No soda. When I asked an employee for help, they shrugged their shoulders when I asked for help. I then went back to the counter and asked for the manager. He didn't offer to fix the machines. I just then asked for my money back. For $12 I don't think it's to much to expect to get a drink that you paid for , have food that hasn't gotten cold from standing around and courteous service. Won't be back to this location. I'd rather go somewhere where you are treated as a valued customer.

I you are in the mood for awesome mexican food, this is the place period. One of my all time favorites if you are not from Utah and visiting you must stop in here you will not regret it.

Great food, great price, friendly staff! Fresh Mexican-style food. This is "fast casual" as I've heard it referred to. Ordering is done in a cafeteria-like line, except the kitchen staff assembles your food, and you pick it up and pay for it at the end of the line. Self-serve drinks. Then it's mostly in-restaurant dining. You do, of course, have the option of taking it with you. Everything I've ever eaten at Cafe Rio has been delicious and filling. The portions are handsome and reasonable priced. Cafe Rio stores around the Salt Lake Valley often have long lines at lunch and dinner. The 5400 South store seems to be the least busy from my experience. Which is to my benefit since I love the place and I don't have to wait as long. The food, staff, service...everything is just as great as any other location. And, there's plenty of parking (unlike some other locations). If you're really hungry, try a burrito served enchilada style! And as I said before, everything is terrific! I don't think you can make a mistake eating here. Not open late - I think they all close at 9pm.

As far as Cafe Rios go, I think food-wise, this one is the best one. They are consistent and the line is a smooth and they get people through fast! Why the sad 2 stars you ask? Do not call in and order. Most of the time they will tell you that the wait for a call in order is much longer than just coming in and standing in line. I get that they have a system and a process, but to a customer, that makes no sense. We call in because I usually have someone else pick up the order so I call to make sure it's all correct. To make matters worse, the reps on the phones are usually not very nice. You have to understand that I am a frequent diner at this Cafe Rio. So, I have more than just a handful of personal experience here. The very last time I called in, they asked to put me on hold right when they answered. I could still hear background noise and while waiting, I heard the phone ring, answered, and ordered taken from someone else who called about 5-6 minutes after I rang in. She then got on the phone with me and started taking my order. I spoke clearly and not fast but she had me repeat everything a few times. I asked for sour cream on my burrito and she yelled into the phone to ask a co-worker how to add that in the computer. After that happened, she told me she got logged out and she needs to take my whole order again. I had 2 meals. Nothing crazy. She couldn't remember any of it. I then repeated my order. I also paused to give her some time to enter it in and waited for the "uh huh"s and the "okay"s. I asked for no beans in my burrito and when she went back to repeat the order she said double rice. I told her I didn't want double rice, I just didn't want beans. She then went to argue double rice because it replaces the beans and it meant the same thing. Well in my head, I'm thinking no, that does not mean the same thing. Logically, I think they're going to put two scoops of rice instead of just the one. I was super frustrated at this point trying to order just 2 meals and it taking 15 minutes. When getting off the phone, I asked for her name and she said it SUPER FAST. I'm all about assuming good intent, but fool me once.. right? So I asked again and she gave it to me. I'm not doing anything with it... but I guess just in case I MUST call in an order again, I will avoid her. Thanks for reading my rant.

I always get the pulled pork salad with the house dressing. Though you need to ask for extra dressing. I like my salad drenched. The homemade tortillas are delicious. I love how the meat has a sweet kick to it.

The Taylorsville location is great. I'm a cafe rio fan to be sure but not every location is created equal. This location stays busy enough to keep food hot and fresh all day long. I order the steak salad. It's hard to get anything else.

I always get the vegetarian burrito from Cafe Rio and I love it, but this location is hit and miss. The burrito comes with guacamole and every time it's a fight to get it without getting charged. Today I ordered online and half way through the burrito I realized there was cheese in the burrito even though it was marked as no cheese... Got nice and sick, thanks cafe rio!

I have loved Cafe Rio for the past ten years, but my experience last Friday was a real downer. I placed an order on-line to avoid waiting in line. I placed my order 45 minutes in advance. When I arrived there was a line 5 people deep and others waiting for their food. When I reached the front of the line the cashier could not find my order. Five minutes later another cashier found my order and ran my credit card. While I was waiting, I noticed the disarray of the takeout staff. They were obviously disorganized and struggling with which order to make next. After 15 minutes, I noticed that some firemen that came in after me, but went through the regular line had their food in hand and were sitting down to eat. I waited another 10 minutes and decided to leave. I told the cashier my name and requested that the manager give me a call. Four days later and I have not heard back from the manager.

If there are zero stars I would give this place zero stars. The people here are rude and bad service. I use to crave their food but next time I come back I would just have to go some place else. No wonder there aren't many reviews.

I like this Cafe Rio. Got a free meal with discount and I used a gift card. Lol. They didn't make me feel cheap.

Bliss. In an enchilada. In the form of sweet pork barbacoa. You may be tired of this place already. It's a franchise and you hate it, along with the other beaten, tired franchises that, in your mind, litter the mini-foodie that is waiting to blow up on SLC. But I love this place. I ate some of the best this city has to offer, and I rivaled my critique to that of anywhere else i've eaten in my life. But this place is different. I have never had anything like that enchilada, and it made my departure alot sadder. I hope this franchise will continue to exist so long as I return to UT.

Food is awesome. Employees need to wait till customers get to them to ask what we want on our burrito. I am so tired of yelling my order over the 5 people ahead of me, and then somehow not getting what I ordered. Check people out faster, and slow down the employees on the line a little. Stop getting ahead of yourself. I will be visiting another location for a while (and I live across the street from this one).

Of all the Cafe Rios I have been to I think the Taylorsville location is the best! It always looks clean and my food is always delicious, the staff is friendly too! I love Cafe Rio, always a great choice for quick Mexican food.

I really like this Cafe Rio location. They are quick, friendly, and the food is good. I went in yesterday just before 4pm and was literally in and out in less than 10 minutes. The cashier yesterday was very friendly, fast, polite, and knew what she was doing.

Do you have to honestly yell out loud when I want extra pork on my salad? Way to make me feel like a fat ass. I love their food. Stay away from the fish tacos, they are a little on the dry side. I thought I would give them another chance but both times I've ordered them, they haven't been so good. From noon to 2 it's pretty busy so I suggest ordering online. It's super convenient to call in and place your order, especially for those who only have an hour of lunch break.

So disappointing. No one there knows what they are doing. Haven't gotten my orders right (it's the special! You should know!!!) in over two months & when I called the manager he didn't care in the least. Ten years ago this was my favorite place to eat and was a quaint local joint. Now it's become too big with too many chains & disconnected owners who don't care about their customers or quality. I couldn't be more disappointed

This location is the best one around. The people are nice and the food doesn't look like it's been sitting out for days. Whenever we go here we literally drive out of our way to go to this location. We're close to the Valley Fair Mall location but never go, because of the bad experience we had.

I love Cafe Rio food, but the Taylorsville location needs to get it together. I have learned to order online instead of phoning in an order. Anytime you try to place an order via phone they tell you it will be at least 1+ hour...and it's faster to come in and stand in line. Tonight when I placed an order, I was given a 6:30pm pick up time. So I arrived 6:30 on the dot and was told I had 3 orders ahead of me and that I would have to wait. I waited for 15 minutes for my order to be completed. The whole point of ordering via phone or web is so you don't have to wait. This happens EVERY time we eat there. I don't know what the deal is in Taylorsville but they act lazy and unorganized compared to other Cafe Rios. I order from the Skyline location occasionally at work and they are always on the ball, and orders are never late. Sorry to say, but It's kind of not worth the hassle at the Taylorsville location.

Love the food, so I keep coming back but the service always sucks. LISTEN to me, that's sll I ask. As soon as I say no rice they pile it on, then try to scrape it off. I asked 4 times for cheese today before I got it. 3 seperate people tried to charge me for a salad when I had to tell each person in the whole serving love I had a tostada with a sub tortilla. Ridiculous!

Cafe Rio is good, not great. I'm not sure what the fascination is with this place, but I don't get it. The barbacoa sweet pork is really good and tasty, but $8-$9 for a burrito with no side dishes is a waste of money. Yes, I know the burritos are ginormous, but all mexi-food joints serve huge portions and nearly all of them are a better "value" than Rio. These guys nickel and dime you to death also... extra meat=$$. Side of salsa=$$. The only real way to get any HEAT on your food is to add your own "topping" sauce from their hot sauce shelf. I prefer the heat/spice to be prepared into the dish during preparation, rather than from a bottle after I get to the table.

My wife and I Went for a Birthday dinner here on 7-19-2014 and it was the second time we had been there. The food was as good as the first time. I don't like the "Slop The Hogs" style of serving that they have. All the sauces run together and they put the fresh lettuce and tomatoes on top of all the saucy mess. Now the service was very rushed and they seem to ask what you want but don't care how you want it. Its very rushed and confusing. They don't let the customer know or educate them on how it works. They just push you through the line and before you know it your at the cash register and half your order is messed up and not the way you wanted it. "What else-What else-What Else" they ask you!. The menus are hung up so they are behind other customers waiting in line so you cant read them fully. The line is rushed along so fast you have no time to make up your mind on what your order is. My suggestion: Slow down the service, Educate the customers that are new, Let them know how it works and make them feel comfortable so they can order their food the way they want it. " online ordering to go" might be a different experience, but we will not be going back, ordering at the counter and going through that cafeteria line.

I love cafe rio! From the shredded chicken salad to the pork burritos! Today the pork was a little on the dry side but still pretty good! The lemonades are mouthwatering! I wish the glass and counters where you go through the line was a little shorter.. I'm only 5 FT so I usually have to stand on my tippy toes and yell when I order.. But over all I cafe rio..

Cafe Rio is the best. I love this place like no other. The service is always fantastic. I don't know why this location gets bad reviews. I go all the time and have never had a bad experience. The food is amazing. OMG I love the sweet pork. The service is always great. They yell out double meat when you order it like you just won the lottery and they're always smiling. I wish all food establishments treated you this way. My only complaint is the lines but what else can be expected when the food is so good. So to sum up. A+++++ food. Great service. Convenient location. Long lines. Nuff said!

I've been to many Cafe Rios in Utah but the guys here are always on par with how they make the food, the pork salad is something I'd live off of for the rest of my life.

When it comes to Cafe Rio, not all locations are created equal. This is more than 2 miles farther than the closest location to my house but I come hear because the service is better, the food is consistently good and the wait times are much shorter than normal. A grilled chicken salad soothes the soul. :)

used to be one of my favorite places to go, last 3-4 visits, not one has went well, online orders were 20-30 min late, one visit they didn't have grilled chic or steak at 1145am and none cooking? food tastes great when it arrives, next time I'll just try dining in

If you want consistently good food, this is the place. Their fire grilled chicken is great and if you're looking for a bit of a healthier option, ask for the corn tortillas instead. They're just as tasty as the flour tortillas.

Let me start off: I don't like Mexican food. My husband is the biggest fan ever, so off we go to Mexican places when his puppy-dog eyes get too big. When we moved to SLC, where there's Mexican every four feet, I knew I couldn't get away with my maybe-once-a-month dodge, anymore. And he brought me to Cafe Rio. It's amazing!! The first time I came, I had a chicken quesadilla, and I ate the whole thing. And their desserts, oh my goodness. If you haven't had their desserts, you're really missing out. We got the chocolate thingie with strawberries on it; I think it's flan? Well, whatever it is, the Mexican dessert by any other name would taste as sweet. It was delicious. We just went back and I got a pork barbacoa taco... and while it's maybe a bit too sweet for me, personally, it was still pretty darn amazing. I'll be back! My -1 star is because their strawberry lemonade is sugar free. I want my sugar! I understand the need for sugar-free options, though, so I'll suffer in (mostly) silence. :)

  • Courtney K.

I love Cafe Rio and it's usually hit or miss at all the locations depending on who your server is on the line. Sometimes you get less meat or salad than other times. This Cafe Rio seems to be the most consistent.

  • Tina S.

This location is horrible! When asked if you want enchilada style and you say no, they do it anyway and charge you an extra dollar for it. When you ask which sauce is mild medium or hot, they don't tell you, they just keep asking which one you want, so you just have to guess which one and hope it is what you want! And the cashier needs to learn how to speak more clearly, especially if she is going to speak to the customers. I WILL NEVER RETURN TO ANY CAFE RIO AGAIN! Zero stars!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
